[Dovecot] Plugin to encrypt mailboxes ?

Hello Is there a possibility for my users to encrypt their mailboxes through Dovecot ? They haven't direct access to the server, IMAP & IMAPS only. We use Thunderbird as client and mailboxes are in MBOX format Dovecot is running on a FreeBSD 7.2 server. Thanks a lot

Command output: Can't open log file /var/log/dovecot/error.log: Permission denied ) So I'm looking at http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA to see what I can do about it. I would have hoped some comments in the example config file would have mentioned this and suggested a default practice solution. Is this something few people or many people encounter (among those using dovecot/deliver from Postfix)? If I do as the wiki describes and make separate log files for dovecot/deliver to use, do I just make them owned by Postfix? It would seem to me a different directory might be more helpful (absent log files could be created by having the directory permissions. I'm also thinking in terms of log rotations, too ... and I prefer to do log rotations by date stamping rather than pushing sequence numbers (the legacy log rotation). Any chance there are %-style variables I can use in log file/path names to make log files automatically named by the date (and maybe time) ... kind of like in a shell script I would do: `date +/path/to/tree/%Y/%m/%d.log` or such.

I've Google'd to exhaustion and can't seem to find an answer to my problem. I'm not sure if the problem is TBird 3 or my Dovecot setup. The basic problem is that when I launch TBird and it grabs messages upon startup, it takes forever to supposedly pull them down. Once it's got them they sort relatively quickly into the proper IMAP (dovecot) folders. I don't use sieve yet; I sort with TBird rules. I don't sync messages for offline use. The only thing TB stores locally is the index cache, which I deleted and had TB rebuild once, which didn't help. All that did was waste more time, as I've got 40,000 messages in my IMAP folders which had to be re-indexed by TB. (I save all list mail for future searching). As an example of this problem, I'd not checked my email for just over day, had ~300 messages waiting in /var/mail/stan. TBird starts pulling them from dovecot and says in the status bar "downloading x of ~300". As I watch the count tick up +10 at a whack, the TB process is pegged at 100%, there is zero network activity, and the imap process on the server shows zero cpu use. It took over 60 seconds to "pull" the messages, after which TB sorted them. During the apparent sorting process, there is quite a bit of network activity and the imap process on the server is relatively busy. I say "pull" in quotes because the entire time TB is saying it's pulling more messages there is no network activity. The client and server are plugged into the same 100BaseT FDX switch (FDX verified), and the server has zero load. I know TBird isn't the greatest IMAP client around, but I think taking over 60 seconds just to download ~300 messages is way too damn long given the hardware resources, network, and load on the client and server machines. TB basically seems to be pulling, or dovecot serving, only about 5 messages/sec over 100Mb ethernet, which is abysmal performance given neither the server nor client have any load. The messages are mostly list mail which are at max a few kilobytes each. I'm leaning toward a problem with TBird but I've been unable to find a bug report that covers this, nor a forum post anywhere, etc. The closest I've found for "slow startup" are recommendations to compact folders. I have no local folders to compact. I delete immediately and expunge on exit. Anyone have any ideas? Other than switching to LDA+sieve and have TB check the IMAP folders for new mail? -- Stan

hi everyone i have a mailserver working with postfix 2.5.1 vda and virtual user with mysql and dovecot, everything is working fine but i want to offer quota and i have a problem with that because the quota in roundcube appear but calculate is wrong i need to delete the maildirsize file to force to recalculate, what can i do??? in my dovecot i have imap{ quota imap_quota, in plugins section i have quota=maildir and trough the file dovecot-sql.conf i have the select expression concat(...... as quota_rule, thanks a lot, PD. sorry for my english im from south of colombia - south america

Hi I've just compiled dovecot under Slitaz, but I can't get it to run... Hi, I have tried to use /dev/shm for Dovecot's index files: > mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u:INDEX=/dev/shm/%u But it does not seem to like it. May 21 07:13:59 IMAP(user): Error: stat(/dev/shm/user/.imap/INBOX) failed: Permission denied (euid=1234(user) egid=500(group) missing +x perm: /dev/shm) It seems to me that /dev/shm permissions are OK. Any suggestions on how to achieve this?

[Dovecot] Dovecot LDAP problems

I'm currently trying to configure a linux mailserver running centos to use an xserve running snow leopard. I am configuring the mailserver to run dovecot,sendmail,clamav,spam assassin and squirrelmail so it matches those used by the mac. The problem I am having is that I cannot get the server to authenticate properly to the macs LDAP database. As far as I can tell it is either a problem authenticating passwords or username and passwords. mail.app says its the password it cant authenticate Thunderbird says it could be either. It seems to be a problem in dovecot-ldap.conf, (as I can run ldapsearch from the linux server authenticate correctly and gain user information) What I'd like to know is there a standard set of settings required to authenticate to the LDAP on the mac? I'm currently running the od with no requirements for Kerberos, SSL or anything else it can authenticate with plain passwords (it will be once it is implemented I'm trying to have as few variables as possible at the moment). Copy of dovecot-ldap.conf below; 1. This file is opened as root, so it should be owned by root and mode 0600. # 1. http://wiki.dovecot.org/AuthDatabase/LDAP # 1. NOTE: If you're not using authentication binds, you'll need to give 2. dovecot-auth read access to userPassword field in the LDAP server. 3. With OpenLDAP this is done by modifying /etc/ldap/slapd.conf. Hi list! I am trying to get dovecot to authenticate users against Novell eDirectory via LDAP. I have successfully gotten open-xchange to authenticate, and I have written a PHP module that authenticates, however I cannot seem to get Dovecot working. [Dovecot] POP3 Problem with SPAM-Mail's over sieve

Hi together, i am currently using dovecot 1.2.10 with the sieve-plugin and use a sieve-filter to sort the SPAM-Mail's directly into a Junk-Folder: require "fileinto"; # rule:[junkfilter] if header :contains "X-Spam-Flag" "YES" { fileinto "Junk"; } My problem is now, if i try to retrieve the Mails via POP3, i did not get the SPAM-Mail's in the Junk-Folder, only the normal ones, that are not filtered over the sieve plugin. [Dovecot] Receive Mail via lmtp/tcp

hi, we have IMAP and SMTP (sendmail(solaris)) on different hosts. Sendmail delivers Mails via LMTP to Cyrus and Cyrus puts the mails into the (hopefully) right box. Now I want to replace the Cyrus host with Dovecot. I've searched a bit in Google but there isn't much about LMTP via TCP in combination with DoveCot. Version 2 seems to be get the feature, but we have round about 5k users, so beta is no choice. Also I red something about maidag (mailutils from Gnu) that could do the Job, but maybe there is a better way. I do not want to install Postfix (or any other SMTP service) on that IMAP Server. So I'm asking is there anybody who has the same construct. Important is, that Quota full etc. messages (RFC) gets back to sendmail, so that the MTA reject the mails, before accepting. cu denny

[Dovecot] logging

I am looking through the logging options and wondering if there are a couple of things that we can do 1. Logouts don't seem to show the IP address of the logout, we typically see multiple sessions at a time and wondering if there is a way to tie the logouts to an IP 2. POP logouts show the number of messages retrieved/deleted but I don't see a way to do this with IMAP, is there a logout option for this with imap? Thanks

[Dovecot] looking for IMAP testing tool

I'm looking for an IMAP testing tool, suitable to use with Dovecot IMAP. It needs to support TLS, STARTTLS, and login/authentication. It needs to be able run from command line, shell scripts, and even do so under cron jobs (e.g. a way to supply the password to use w/o a terminal prompt). Typical interactive mail clients just don't cut it (even the text mode ones). One reason is I need to do the tests on a number of machines, under a number of user and domain names, and with a variety of parameters or destinations. This is for a suite of regression tests I am putting together intended to verify that configuration changes do not break things (or unbreak things that are supposed to not work). Anyone ever heard of such a tool? Open source would be preferred (better yet, my favorite programming languages: C, Pike, Python).

hello, yesterday I tried to package dovecot-2.0beta5 + pigeonhole from Mercurial repository. I put pigeonhole as a subdir in the dovecot sourcetree. Following http://hg.rename-it.nl/dovecot-2.0-pigeonhole/raw-file/tip/INSTALL I called ./autogen.sh; ./configure --with-dovecot=..; make In the buildprocess I saw this output ( from autogen.sh ): Putting files in AC_CONFIG_AUX_DIR, `..'. libtoolize: `config.guess' exists: use `--force' to overwrite libtoolize: `config.sub' exists: use `--force' to overwrite libtoolize: `ltmain.sh' exists: use `--force' to overwrite I dont know *why* AC_CONFIG_AUX_DIR is .. but in .. there are the mentioned files (from dovecot) already present. Dovecot's transactions often write-lock dovecot.index.log twice (without unlocking in between), and then unlock it twice. Is that intended, or is that a bug? If I read the man pages correctly, double write-locking is pointless but safe. But double unlocking could cause data corruption during the period between the first and second unlocks, because the locks don't nest (are not refcounted). The first unlock leaves the file totally unlocked. Could this be the source of some index corruption errors? For example: 1. Process A acquires a F_WRLCK on a file. 2. Through a different code path, process A again acquires a F_WRLCK on the same file. Since these locks don't nest this is essentially a no-op. 3. Process A modifies the file. 4. Process A unlocks the file to undo the lock in step 2. Now the file has no lock on it at all. 5a. Process B locks, modifies, and unlocks the file. 5b. Process A also modifies the file, thinking that it still has a write lock. 6. Process A unlocks the file to undo the lock in step 1, but this is another no-op. Data corruption is possible if steps 5a and 5b conflict, or if 5b uses stale data. Here is a code path in dovecot-1.2.11 which exhibits the above behavior. "Outer" write lock: maildir_transaction_save_commit_pre -> maildir_transaction_save_commit_pre_sync -> maildir_sync_index_begin -> mail_index_sync_begin -> mail_index_sync_begin_to -> mail_index_sync_begin_init -> mail_transaction_log_sync_lock -> mail_transaction_log_lock_head -> mail_transaction_log_file_lock -> mail_index_lock_fd -> file_wait_lock -> file_lock_do "Inner" write lock: maildir_transaction_save_commit_pre -> maildir_sync_index_finish -> mail_index_sync_commit -> mail_index_write -> mail_transaction_log_rotate -> mail_transaction_log_file_create -> mail_transaction_log_file_create2 -> mail_transaction_log_file_lock -> mail_index_lock_fd -> file_wait_lock -> file_lock_do The file being locked is the same, dovecot.index.log. In another case, maildir_sync_index_begin is reached this way (outer lock): mailbox_sync -> mailbox_sync_init -> maildir_storage_sync_init -> maildir_sync_context -> maildir_sync_index_begin -> mail_index_sync_begin -> etc. And maildir_sync_index_finish is reached this way (inner lock): mailbox_sync -> mailbox_sync_init -> maildir_storage_sync_init -> maildir_sync_context -> maildir_sync_index_finish -> etc. Could these lead to data corruption? I am running a mailserver in Debian Lenny AMD-64 that uses Postfix driven virtual mailbox domains stored in a MySQL database, managed by PostfixAdmin and phpMyAdmin. I must send my mail through DYNDNS through port 2525 the username and password for that service does not appear at all in any of my user names. I have added / merged the data in the Configuring Dovecot SASL but when testing we see nothing about AUTH when testing it. I have this in dovecot-postfix.conf: mail_location = maildir:/home/mail/dnamesum=%12MLd/dname=%Ld/unamesum=%12MLn/uname=%Ln/mail Yes, it is excessive, but that's just for testing. The pattern I really want is less clear for debugging. In postfix/main.cf I have: mailbox_command = /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver -c /etc/dovecot/dovecot-postfix.conf -a "${RECIPIENT}" I verified through strace that -a "${RECIPIENT}" is in fact getting a full user@domain address. The problem is that %d and %Ld are coming up as empty, and %12MLd is giving me the first 12 hex characters of an md5 of an empty content. It's losing the domain name somewhere. It's in the mail headers and in the -a option. So what else is needed?

[Dovecot] Setting up a 'rootless' server - user and auth_user cannot be the same

I am trying to follow http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/Rootless to set up a personal dovecot server that does not use 'root' and does not need to change uids/gids. I'm trying to set it up on a Cygwin personal system. The problem I'm running into though, the directions say to set "user" and "auth_user" to be the same in this setup. However when you do this, Dovecot compains and will refuse to start up. Motivated by a desire to know what "doveadm" does: Do we want to be having a page or pages in the Dovecot Wiki which document the executable tools? I can also see Dovecot 2.0 builds in there. But they appear to be being made every couple hours, so presumably based on the bleeding edge of the Mercurial repository. Hi, we were modifying old SELinux rules for dovecot 2.0. Everything seems ok, only one report seems odd: "SELinux is preventing /usr/sbin/dovecot "write" access on dovecot.conf." Hello, I have recently begun using IMAP to access my mails, and have found that the size of my maildir is quickly getting larger than I had anticipated. Googling around, I've seen a lot of messages related to compressing individual messages in a maildir. However, what I'm really looking for is a solution which will allow multiple messages to be compressed into a single compressed file, while still allowing those messages to be accessed via IMAP. The reasoning behind this is that most of my incoming mail consists of many very-similar messages (for example, it is not unheard of for me to receive 10,000 emails detailing the same error report over a weekend, with the actual "needs to be processed" parts stuck on the end of each message) I'm expecting a simple "no, there's no way to do that", but I wouldn't mind being pleasantly surprised. My question again: Is there any way to keep a bundle of older mails compressed, so that they can enjoy the high compression of being very similar to each-other, while still allowing access via imap? A solution may involve (just throwing out ideas here, which I have no idea how to implement) putting messages older than N days into an MBox file, and either somehow linking my account to that file (so that my account consists of [compressed readonly Mbox]+[live uncompressed Maildir]), or perhaps the first half of that, but accessing archived messages through a separate account. (Not the preferred way, but if it's the only way, I'll do it) But really I don't even know if it's possible to have dovecot support MBox and Maildir simultaneously, nor do I know enough about the MBox format to even know if the IMAP-style "multiple mailboxes" thing is possible in MBox. Please excuse my no-doubt confused terminology and general air of doesn't-know-what-he's-talking-about. The internals of e-mail are generally not my thing, so I'd appreciate any pointing in the right direction which anyone may have to offer. Any ideas?

Can't get Thunderbird 2 to delete a folder under mdbox (Dovecot 2.0beta5) I have built Dovecot 2.0 and installed it under "/opt/dovecot2". I have done the minimum configurations necesary to get it to work with SSL, systems users but with a secondary password database, and set up mail location as "mdbox:~/dbox". I had to create the directory "dbox" in the user's home directory to get things working. Using Thunderbird 2, I can happily copy messages into this system and read them out again, and that all works. In the user's "~/dbox" directory, I get a "storage" directory and a file "m.1". I can also create folders, and nested folders, and put messages into those and read them out again, and that all works. If I try to delete a folder through Thunderbird 2, what happen is that the folder gets moved to be under a folder "Trash" (which Thunderbird calls "Deleted"). So if I had a folder "foo" and deleted it, I end up with a folder "Trash/foo" (which Thunderbird calls "Deleted/foo"). Fair enough: Thunderbird is doing a trash can model on folders. I then go to remove the folder foo from "Trash". Thunderbird doesn't complain, and the folder disappears from the folder list. But upon re-starting Thunderbird, we see that the folder "foo" is still there under "Trash". So it seems the folder was never properly deleted. Perhaps this is a bug in Thunderbird 2, but since this is a beta Dovecot with a new storage subsystem, I thought I would suggest that it might be an issue with Dovecot 2.0beta5. Regards, Bill
