Hello there, Now I'm using `expire` plugin and getting troubles with cronjob (from user `exim`): /usr/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail ext /usr/libexec/dovecot/expire-tool.sh Fatal: setgid(12(mail)) failed with euid=93(exim), gid=93(exim), egid=93(exim): Operation not permitted (This binary should probably be called with process group set to 12(mail) instead of 93(exim)) The same error occurs when I run this command from `exim` user with sudo. [Dovecot] Howto disable imap listener in dovecot 2.0

Hi, How do I disable the imap listener in dovecot 2.0-beta-3? I only want to enable the imaps listener. In previous dovecot versions I could specify: prototols = imaps But in dovecot 2.0 this is no longer possible (imap and imaps are now both enabled with "protocols = imap"). I already made ssl a requirement with: ssl = required This is in the global section. I commented out the imap listener in master.conf, but "dovecot -a" still shows the config for the imap listener, so I suppose it's default configuration. Can I explicitly tell dovecot to not open an imap listener, but only an imaps listener? Kind regards, Erik.

I'd like to reduce that number to, say, 1, and let my firewall keep the ducks at bay, but I can't find anything in /etc/dovecot.conf or by googling. How do I do it? Hi there, im currently using dovecot 0.99.11 (dovecot-0.99.11-4.EL4) on Centos 4.4 i386 /var/log/maillog has started to produce several times per minute this entry: Mar 9 14:52:44 mail pop3(albrook): Timeout while waiting for release of fcntl() lock for mbox file /var/mail/albrook when this happens, users cannot receive email properly, but eventually (maybe a few minutes or a few hours) the email gets delivered. is this a problem in the 0.99 version? can i safely upgrade to 1.2? thanks,

Hi all, I'm trying to get postfix and dovecot working nicely together to process and store mail for both local (system) on one domain and virtual users and a few different domains. I've got postfix up and running quite nicely, but am having a few problems with Dovecot. [Dovecot] Using MySQL For Mailboxes?

I have always seen some people indicate they use MySQL for mailboxes in Postfix and I wondered how difficult something like this would be? I have 300 users on my company Postfix server right now. I am just using Postfix, Dovecot (IMAP4 only), & Roundcube (Webmail). I have MySQL loaded on the machine that runs Postfix but only to manage the database for Roundcube. Do you think that 300+ users is recommended for a MySQL database for mailboxes? Secondly, how difficult is it to configure this? Right now everyone user has a home directory and a mailbox in their private home folder. Is it hard to configure Postfix & Dovecot to use MySQL mailboxes? Just looking for some suggestions since I couldn't find a log of info via Google. *PS* I was told that Dovecot doesn't support MySQL mailboxes. I think it does. Probably I'm doing something stupidly wrong. I have dovecot 1.2.7 and sieve 0.1.13. I have a sieve script starting with # <some comment> require ["vacation", "date", "relational"]; I get main_script: line 2: error: require command: unknown Sieve capability 'date'. Just to make sure I haven't messed up the dovecot package: $ strings /usr/pkg/lib/dovecot/lda/lib90_sieve_plugin.a | fgrep date_extension date_extension date_extension date_extension date_extension date_extension What's going on? It's probably some totally stupid typo on my side.

Hello, i use working quotasystem with sql-quotadict. The values stored in db are used to realize also a quotasystem in postfix to reject mails if they are bigger then remaining quota. if dataset in quotadict is missing for some reasons, postfix can't calculate quota and mail gets delivered even if user is already over quota. I am looking for a way to force dovecot/lda to recalculate users bytes/messages with command xy and not to wait for incomming mail. Currently i use: deliver -d $user -n -m folderwithunspeakablenamesonobodyusesthis and send a small message which gets lost but starts the calculation. This works but seems not to be the finest way. Is there a better way or my current procedure acceptable? Thanks, Andre

Hi Timo, There was another thread (it has come up at least a few times in the past few years I've been lurking) on the postfix list about having some kind of automatic 'Save to Sent' option to avoid the users mail client from having to upload messages twice (obviously the only ones of concern are ones with large attachments) - once to send it, and once to save the copy in the sent folder. I know and understand that doing this is not generally the job of the MTA, but hopefully most people can at least admit that there would be a (potentially huge, in the case of any large company that deals with a lot of large attachments in their email) savings in bandwidth (and user frustration) if a way could be found to do this reliably and at little to no 'cost' in terms of CPU/Disk IO, so I have a question about how this might be done... Given: Postfix can be configured to use the Dovecot LDA for delivering mail incoming. My question is simply, why wouldn't it be possible to create a Dovecot LSA ('submission agent'), that could be defined in postfix's master.cf file, which could then be configured to a) pipe the message to postfix, and b) if message is successfully sent, save a copy to the users Sent folder? Obviously, there would be some caveats - ie, postfix and dovecot would both have to be running on the same box (or at a minimum on the same local network)... Anyway, this is just something that really bugs me (and has for many, many years) every time I send a message with a large attachment, and have to watch it slowly process the message sending it, then again to save it to the Sent folder, so Ijust wanted to get your take on if this is even remotely feasible... -- Best regards, Charles

I'm trying to kickstart 2.0b3 on my NetBSD system (where 1.2.x works great!), and keep hitting: Fatal: service(tcpwrap) access(/software/dovecot-2.0beta3/libexec/dovecot/tcpwrap) failed: No such file or directory Indeed, that file doesn't exist...but I don't have nor want libwrap. It appears that doveconf includes tcpwrap... service tcpwrap { chroot = client_limit = 1 drop_priv_before_exec = no executable = tcpwrap extra_groups = group = privileged_group = process_limit = 0 process_min_avail = 0 protocol = service_count = 0 type = user = $default_internal_user vsz_limit = 4294967295 } ...but nothing else seems to. Running configure with --without-libwrap doesn't make any difference (configure doesn't find libwrap anyway). What am I missing here? How can I use dovecot 2.0 w/tcp wrappers? ScottE

Hi Everyone, I've managed to get most of postfix and dovecot running using the howto located on dovecot.org. So, I went to go test sending a email locally and i am getting this error which i cannot seem to resolve. Any help would be welcomed. Hi, This is my first mail, fyi. I dont know internals of the plugin but it depends more on Solr than Dovecot. Also the activity level and "real-timeness" of the index is important. Assuming this as the search only machine and relatively moderate usage, a big box with lots of RAM and 4-way server may work in your case. Lee

Dear all. (I'm new to the list.) Our regional government is considering, due to our proposal, migrate from Courier to Dovecot. 70k mailboxes. One of the most attractive features for them is the usage of indexes, and especially Solr FTS plugin. Their question is: How many users (range of users) could support one Solr instance used as index and search backend? Are there any deployment examples? I think, it would be easy to split users into different Solr instances, but it's not that easy to reorganize them, as we have to reindex if one user is moved from one instance to another. Regards. Hello.... Someone know ho work the istream-concat ? I made a copy of istream-concat, and use to manipulate my encrypted body. But i got some questions about the stream->pos, stream->skip and position of the message and pointer to buffer. My messages have the W= with the email size decrypted, and it is a little lass that the email size crypto. For exemple: I have a email with 6000k in crypto and decrypto the size is 5985 k: The buffer from istream-concat is 4096, i read 4096 from get_stream_data, but the result of this read is minor , lets say 4080, but the next read must be from 4096. The "send to client" must be 4080, to send the correctly data decrypted. My Question is, what the variable used in istream-concat, to send the data to client ? I need to update the stream->pos with my data length ?? I dont know if i made understand my question.....

I totally agree with the one of you who mentioned the online documentation and the wiki. I know that it exists and i used it for setting up my mail server, but ... as i said, i am old fashioned and i can better work with books. It's just a personal preferrence. Well, i also know that many developers are still working on dovecot, especially Timo and that always new features, configuration options and so on are added, but ... it's the same with other applications in the community (e.g. postfix, apache, OpenLDAP, samba ....) and for all those applications books are available, and that was the reason, why i asked for a book. And to be honest. When i go thru the documentation part, most of the documents were not changed for at least 6 months. I am sure that between the writing and the publishing of a book new dovecot features will be introduced and not covered in the book. But everyone working with books knows that they can't be up to date, but they are a real good basis for me to start with the fundamentals and then add this information by new data from the web. And guys just to mention one big advantage of a book is, you can read it offline easily!! But there is one thing i want to mention at this point. Even if you agree with me about having a book or not. What i really like is the discussion about and the chance to do so, because dovecot is opensource. And for me this is in the end the result behind the idea of open source. Everyone has the chance to contribute, either by code, by suggestions, by comments ..... And that for me is more important than to have a book or not. Thank you all for your comments. Hi, I'm not sure whether the client or the server is at fault (probably the client), but it's clearly a regression for me. I'm using the LCG Profimail (http://lonelycatgames.com/?app=profimail) application for my Symbian smartphone which has quite decent IMAP capabilities. Amongst others it can do IMAP IDLE (which has to be statically enabled in the server settings, so it's not used based on the server capabilities). After upgrading from 1.2.10 to 2.0b3 it does not connect anymore. Hello, Dovecot 1.2.5, centos 5.4. We are using NFS for mail, but indexes are local and on a ramdisk. However I'm getting logs such as: Mar 02 11:47:14 POP3(USERDELETED): Error: Timeout while waiting for lock for transaction log file /ramdisk/indexes/DOMAINDELETED/USERDELETED/.INBOX/dovecot.index.log Our NFS is rather busy, and we having other warnings to that affect, but wouldn't have though we'd get timeouts on a ramdisk. -- Andrew

[Dovecot] dovecot 1.1.6 and outloook express 6 out of sync

Apologies if this has been discussed before. I have dovecot 1.1.6 installed on my qnap NAS. I connect to the imap server using outlook express 6 on my XP sp3 box. I notice, after a time, that what I see in outlook express isn't what is actually on the imap server. For example, in one of my folders, many messages are missing. On another, headers of messages start getting duplicated and the bodies don't always match the headers. If I tell outlook express to clean up and reset... i.e. remove all the headers and bodies so they get downloaded again, then everything appears again... for a little while. Likewise, if I delete all the index files on the server and restart it, all seems well for a bit. Somehow, OE is getting out of sync with the imap server. This same OE client is also talking to other non-dovecot imap servers and I don't see this out-of-sync-ness or corruption at all. I realise this is a vaguely stated problem, but I'm not a imap person and dont yet know how to narrow it down further, nor can I reliably recreate it. Has anybody seen anything like this before? We've been struggling with a problem for the past couple of days which to this point I've only gotten to be able to boil down to this: 1. Install nessus home edition (less pluggins I assume) 2. run all scans (sequentially or in parallel, doesn't seem to matter) 3. about 3 minutes in /var/log/messages will show segfaults on imap and/or pop3 imap-login[22185]: segfault at 000000000000000c rip 0000003c7de610a2 rsp 00007fffa2342068 error 4 or sometimes... pop3-login[24451]: segfault at 000000000000000c rip 0000003c7de610a2 rsp 00007fff07116968 error 4 I'm having a really hard time getting a core dump and I'm having a really hard time narrowing down the list of nessus tests which cause this. So far, I have repeated this failure in 1.1.19 and 1.1.20 Additionally we've seen something similar on 1.2 and reverted back to 1.1 a year ago. At the time we could not re-produce a test case and finally gave up. Has anyone seen something along these lines? Can anyone recommend how I could narrow this down further so we can find the problem? Hi I want to create a mailbox that no one would be able to delete mails from and disable access to it through pop. I have come up with using ACLs to allow read-only access to users. Is that right approach? Could someone tell me how I can achieve the second objective of disabling pop access to this mailbox only. [Dovecot] any limitations running on a Mac?

I have postfix/dovecot/mysql installed using MacPorts on a quad-core 2.8GHz MacPro running Snow Leopard (10.6.2). I moved the base mail directory to a pair of 10k RPM Raptors that are mirrored (/Volumes/email/) and everything seems to be working fine on an unused domain with very little traffic. I used imapsync to pull everything from the current mailserver to this test server to play with. Our current mailserver's IMAP performance *really* suffers when an IMAP folder exceeds ~500MB or ~5k messages. I've become very tired of being the mailbox police trying to get my 20 users to delete email or divide into smaller mailboxes. Are there folks on the list running postfix/dovecot on similar Mac hardware that can share their experiences? Specifically, are there any limitations (file descriptors, other?) that can impact performance I should be aware of? How does dovecot on the Mac deal with >500GB maildirs? Is there a recommended tool for loading and testing the server? Postal? I have 20 IMAP users, with a total of ~37GB of mail currently. [Dovecot] client cert handling not working properly on centos 4.8

Dear List I've successfully installed/configured dovecot 1.2.10 with "require client cert" on centos 5.4 and ubuntu server 9.10 I also need to install on centos 4.8 and after the following the exact same procedure I can only get it working if I commented out ssl_require_client_cert =yes and ssl_username_from_cert = yes from the working config file. This is even after compiling dovecot with openssl 0.9.8l on centos 4.8 If I copy the same "client_ca.crt" from centos 4.8 to centos 5.4 then centos 5.4 does not problem in verifying client cert. That file contain CRL as well as certificate which signs the pkcs12 file installed on the client. Hi everyone..... I Build a plugin to concat my body and header splited.... Its have 2 "versions". One is with the body without modifications. The second, is with the body with crypto, and this crypto increase a little the size of email. So, without crypto, works fine, but with crypto i got stuck in some modifications. Because the email is splited, to handle it, i made a copy from istream-concat.c, and in i_stream_concat_read i made this changes. Every place that have the i_stream_get_data i get the index from concat (if is the frist or second stream) and if is the second, (my body) the unsigned char *data is the return from my function. if(cstream->cur_idx == 1){ data = decrypt_data(cstream->cur_input, &data_size); }else{ data = i_stream_get_data(cstream->cur_input, &data_size); } In this part, i get the function i_stream_get_data and put in the function too, to get the data in the same way, but i dont return the (_stream->buffer + _stream->skip;), i put this in a unsigned char * too, and work with this variable. The size_r, with the _stream->pos - _stream->skip, i update it, with the new value get from my total length from the decrypted buffer. In resume, every (inside istream_concat_read and istream_concat_read_next ) i_stream_get_data(cstream->cur_input, &data_size); // (in istream_concat_read is "pos" variable) I change to if(cstream->cur_idx == 1){ data = decrypt_data(cstream->cur_input, &data_size); //(in istream_concat_read is "pos" variable) }else{ data = i_stream_get_data(cstream->cur_input, &data_size); //(in istream_concat_read is "pos" variable) } Setting the unsigned char *data, with my decrypted data and the pos or data_size, with the length of buffer data , decrypted. I Think there is Ok with this, and must be work, but i got some errors with this, when the Email is read to get them, the total length read is diferent from the W flag in header name. FETCH [] for mailbox INBOX UID 2 got too little data: 1351 vs 1352 FETCH [] for mailbox INBOX UID 1 got too little data: 1357 vs 1360 FETCH [] for mailbox INBOX UID 3 got too little data: 691 vs 1303 There is some variable or something that i forgot to update with this news values ? Hi All, In my mail server i have two groups and one user is belonging to both the groups. Previously i was using cyrus at that time when i am sending a mail to the two groups there will only one mail in the user mailbox . But now the user is getting one more copy of same mail. Seriously, I just have to ask this question. Why mark via the subject line a message as "OFF LIST" and then send it via the normal list framework. Doing so only insures that the message is actually "ON LIST" irregardless of what nomenclature is used in the subject line. If a message is truly supposed to be "OFF LIST", then why not send it directly to its intended recipient(s)? If, on the other hand, it is meant for general review by the groups members, then why mark it "OFF LIST" to begin with? I am aware of the prefix "OT" used in several forums; however, that is usually only used to thwart the moderator of the forum from banning the message or chastising the OP. [Dovecot] FTS cron script to force index updates

Has anyone written a script to perform the above? If not, how would I do this? Would I write a shell script to telnet to the IMAP port and then issue the commands? Can this be done with a bash script? Or would I need something more serious like a perl script? Thanks. -- Stan
