Hello folks - I'm running dovecot on top of qmail/vpopmail/mysql, serving up about 2500 mailboxes. Everything is running very smooth and fast.... I recently upgraded dovecot to 1.1, so I'm trying to implement some extra features like IMAP quotas. I'm using the sql passdb, with the following config: driver = mysql connect = host=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock user=username password=password dbname=vpopmail default_pass_scheme = PLAIN password_query = SELECT CONCAT(pw_name, '@', pw_domain) AS user, pw_clear_passwd AS password FROM vpopmail WHERE pw_name = '%n' AND pw_domain = '%d' user_query = SELECT pw_dir as home, 508 AS uid, 503 AS gid FROM vpopmail WHERE pw_name = '%n' AND pw_domain = '%d' My vpopmail installation keeps the quota information in the mysql database (pw_shell field) instead of maildirsize. The quota is in maildir format, e.g. 400M or 50331648S. Unlimited quota is specified as NOQUOTA. The question is... Is it possible to make dovecot understand this format and get it directly from SQL (via user_query, for example) or would it be easier to reconfigure the vpopmail installation somehow to use maildirsize? [Dovecot] how to handle CA CRL updates with client certificate verification context ?

Hello, As far as I can read in the Dovecot SSL configuration wiki page, each CA cert must be followed by the related CA CRL in the client certificate verification context ("ssl_ca_file" setting). In my company we do have our own PKI and as soon as Client certificate is compromised we do revoke it and update the related CA's CRL. Does that mean that I have to issue a new "ssl_ca_file" file as soon as our issuing CA CRL is updated ? If yes, does someone has an idea on how to do so ? Is it then necessary to restart dovecot process (to take the "ssl_ca_file" file changes into account) ? Does Dovecot have a way to check the issuing CA CRL automatically ? (the CRL is published in DER format and is accessible though http, the URI is mentionned in the CRL Distribution points of the CA certificate) Thanks in advance for your help. Regards, Raphael

[Dovecot] Problem with sasl auth with postfix...

Hello list, I'm running into some problems, and I couldn't find any info about this anywhere on the net. I recently set up a new debian lenny machine, and used my notes from the last debian etch machine I set up, which basically is for postfix + dovecot for sasl auth. On my old etch box, in the dovecot.conf, in the auth default section, I have a socket listen { client { path = /var/spool/postfix/private/auth mode = 0660 user = postfix group = postfix } } However, if I use the same config on my lenny setup, dovecot fails to start, and I see this in my logs: Mar 13 19:16:30 mailserver dovecot: Dovecot v1.0.15 starting up Mar 13 19:16:30 mailserver dovecot: auth(default): User doesn't exist: postfix Mar 13 19:16:30 mailserver dovecot: Auth process died too early - shutting down Mar 13 19:16:30 mailserver dovecot: child 4623 (auth) returned error 89 Now if I comment out the user and group lines, it works fine, but the socket is owned by root, and so I have to change the mode line so that it's world readable in order for postfix to use it. The version of dovecot in etch is: 1.0.rc15-2etch4 and the version in lenny is: 1.0.15-2.3 Any ideas why this might be happening? Did the syntax to do this change between those versions? Any input? I guess I don't mind leaving it world readable, but I wasted an entire morning trying everything to get it to work, so I guess I'm hoping some one atleast has an answer as to why it doesn't work. [Dovecot] Using LDAP for Dovecot extra/regular fields

Hi, We're moving to a dovecot proxy / server configuration in order to make sure that a users go to a specific server. If someone has used these LDAP for this, there are a few things that I wish to verify. Dovecot does not verify that type of the LDAP attribute, only that the returned value works. If a boolean is used for a yes/no field, then FALSE sets the field to no and TRUE sets the field to yes. If a multivalue attribute is used for a single value field, the last returned value for the LDAP lookup is used in that field (i.e. host will use the last value). If a string attribute is returned for a yes/no field and has any value, then the associated field is set to true. There is no automatic failover with the host field so if the remote host is down, the IMAP connection no longer works. I'm fairly sure of all of these except for the boolean. Now this is just due diligence. I don't know that turning on/off or switching LDAP attributes is the right way to go to handle failover but it might work for phased rollout. My feeling is the best configuration will be using a secondary IP address that has to be manually turned on for a host after a reboot or shutdown. This creates a poor mans "fencing". The secondary can either be brought up on another host or handled via a load balance with DSR/backup server. As a practical matter, it is probably worth setting sensible attributes for each field (i.e. numeric for host, boolean for proxy/proxy_maybe etc). Any interest in registering an LDAP object class for dovecot? ---Jack

http://dovecot.org/patches/1.1/maildir-dirty-syncs.diff This patch adds a new maildir_very_dirty_syncs setting. If set to "yes", Dovecot assumes it's the only one changing the cur/ directory (so other MDAs can add mails to new/ without problems). This makes it possible to avoid rescanning the cur/ directory all the time looking for filenames. It also looks like (in stress testing) it still scans the cur/ directory unneededly in some situations, but it shouldn't be common. Maybe I'll look into it some day to see why. I'd be interested in hearing how large performance benefits it gives, if any. If they're big I could consider adding it to v1.1.12. If they're pretty much irrelevant I probably won't even bother adding the code to v1.2. I guess you mainly see the performance benefits with large/huge mailboxes.

Quick outline of my current working setup: I'm running dovecot 1.0.5 as an IMAP mail server on my ubuntu home server, which i connect to with my phone and several other machines to check my mail etc. i use getmail to collect mail from my various pop accounts. getmail filters the mail using spamassassin via a Filter_external, before moving it to my Maildir on the home server. Then when I connect to the home server from my various machines, IMAP manages the status of all the mail, so unread messages are common etc. All works very nicely. However I'd like to fix a minor annoyance... ...Spamassassin marks mail as SPAM but the mail client has to do the job of moving it to the Junk folder. I'd like the mail to be filtered on the home server on receipt. Am I just making things really complicated for myself? Is there a simpler setup for what I'm trying to do? [Dovecot] Extremely custom mailbox locations

I'm in the position where I'd like to offer IMAP access to a collection of email accounts which are stored in a very odd manner. Files are stored as: /blah/$dd-$mm-$yy/$domain/1234/1234 For example: /reject/12-3-2009/cvsrepository.org/35199/35199639 There is a single file for each mail, which I guess technically probably counts as an mbox folder, but only just. I can handle the custom login requirements I have, but I see no obvious way to create a mailstore from this information unless I build up a parallel symlink farm, such as: /imap/cvsrepository.org/{new cur tmp} I suspect if I fill cur/ with symlinks to each of the individual messages things will mostly work out OK, but I wonder if that is the best solution, or if there is a slim chance that I could serve this hierarchy without the intermediate step? Dear List, Based on the following installed environment: - OpenBSD (latest version!) - PostgreSQL - dovecot with SSL would like to have a mail server which accepts system as well as virtual users and being able to connect to their mailboxes either via an MUA (Thunderbird etc.) or a web interface (squirrel mail?). When using the web interface, non registered users should be able to creat e-mail accounts which will be dovecot virtual users! Which components should I use? Thanks

Hello, It's my first mailserver I set up. Thanks to everybody who contributes to dovecot. Dovecot works great for me! One thing I want to get rid off is this traceback error using dovecot with sieve. [Dovecot] Imap logout message on Dovecot restart

I'm trying to receive a "Disconnected" message in my logfile for the connected imap-clients when I restart dovecot. When you disconnect a client, you receive the following message in your log: Mar 12 21:45:55 mail dovecot: IMAP(mailbox(a)domain.com): Disconnected: Logged out bytes=7496/22441 When a IMAP client is connected and Dovecot is restarted, this message is not shown. This should be solvable by a script like this: #!/bin/sh unset LOG_TO_MASTER export USE_SYSLOG=1 exec /usr/lib/dovecot/imap But this logs the user that runs the script into the imap server and when I terminate this terminal I get a "Disconnected" message for the local linux user, which I don't need of course. Is there a way to get to what I want ? I want to log my IMAP statics for every day and I need to "disconnect" my imap clients for it in some way to receive the Disconnected message and count from there. Thanks.

[Dovecot] High load/corrupted indexes after moving mailboxes?

Hello, we're experiencing an odd issue after combining two vDisks used for mail storage into one big new LVM. We've done this in the past successfully and didn't experience a lot of problems. We stopped all services (dovecot/postfix) to ensure that mailbox contents (Maildir) will not be changed, rsynch'ed the mail to the new disks and restarted everything. When we restarted dovecot, we noticed a huge spike in load (average load in top and high cpu iowait) and isolated dovecot as the issue. At some point, the average load crept up to over 100 and crashed the server twice. However, over time the average load and cpu wait times went down slightly. I have noticed a spike in load after moving user's mail storage, but not like this. It almost looks like everyone is either re-indexing or re-caching their mail? Any help would be appreciated. We're on dovecot 0.99. -Pat

Hello, I have an imap server with huge Maildirs and several users running dovecot 1.0.13, I need to migrate all the imap accounts to a new box which runs dovecot 1.1.4. The requisite is that need to do it with no downtime or minimal downtime possible, and totally transparent for end users. I have tried IMAP<-->IMAP syncing using a master user in both servers and imapsync, however due to the huge Maildirs (some users have more than 10 years of mail) this tends to be quite slow and painful. Can I tar all the user's Maildir and move them from one box to the other, and then run imapsync again? which I assume that would be faster... or is there any better solution I am not aware of? (ie: I've seen some emails about dovecot replication on the list archives, but few details of how that should be configured). I'd appreciate any feedback or thoughts on this matter. Thank you. I am trying to compile Dovecot Sieve, when i execute the command make i get this error: /usr/ccs/bin/ld: illegal option -- start-group The configure sentence was : ./configure --with-dovecot=/export/software/dovecot1.2/dovecot-1.2 And it finishes right. I have succesfully compile dovecot 1.2 beta 1 source with dovecot-1.2-managesieve-0.11.3 patch. I am trying to get a shared folder to work. [Dovecot] GUI/WUI for creating (common) sieve scripts?

Anyone aware of a Web User Interface or GUI to allow users to create simple/common-type sieve scripts? I found the sieve testing and have used it as I play; plus mangesieve (and Net:ManageSieve.pm) but want to allow users to build so some clicking and maybe a little typing and then end up with some filters. So before I go invent this wheel I'd like to know what others are doing? TIA, Rod --

Ok - at this time I am using the following non-default settings: Samba server - smb.conf [Mailstorage] ea support = Yes use sendfile = Yes fake oplocks = Yes delete readonly = Yes Dovecot - dovecot.conf mmap_disable = yes dotlock_use_excl = yes fsync_disable = yes lock_method = dotlock I'm still testing - but at this time I'm seeing no errors. Hi, I was trying to crosscompile dovecot, but I got some error: --with-notify=inotify don't work, as it try to run a test program to verify if inotify is supported in the building platform. Solved with --with-notify=dnotify. Ihmo, is more a hack than a solution. | checking whether posix_fallocate() works... configure: error: cannot run test program while cross compiling I can't find an a suitable option for this error. Again the problem is that configure can't run an executable for a different platform. It's possible to set a safe default? Hello, My dovecot server is currently having random issues when users want to acces their mailbox. When the issue is occuring there's a timeout. It's random because it happens more or less often and is not dependent on a user or the way their check the mailbox. The time during the problem occurs is random, sometimes it's less than a minute, sometimes it's some hours. When a user can't connect to its mailbox, he generally can receive its emails through his BlackBerry (it's just to illustrate the fact that it doesn't seem to be linked to an account). When this issue occurs they can't receive the headers from any folder (INBOX, custom, sent, ...) and can't read mails that headers are known by the mail client. When there's timeout, users can send emails (same jail and with an error when the client want to write a copy in the sentbox) and use the calendar server for example (on the same machine). Dovecot is running on a FreeBSD 7.0 32bits, 4GB RAM, Intel Xeon QuadCore @ 1.86 Ghz, and 3*500Gb SATA-2 RAID-5 disks. The box is hosting jails, and the mail jails ( imap + smtp, clamav + spamassassin ). The mail jails are new (since August 2008) but worked great since the beginning of this year. The server is hosting 122 accounts currently. My first thought was that there's an I/O issue, the disks are maybe too busy or there's paging that result in a timeout. I check it through vmstat an top commands but nothing appears, there's always some memory free (between 90-300 MB) and a very little paging, generally around 1MB. The fault are under a hundred and when, few times, it has more than a hundred (generally under 200) the next snapshot is under 100. I set the screen/line to refresh every 5 seconds. I shutdowned all jails not directly related to the mail service but the problem still occured. I also separated clamav and spamassassin from imap and smtp to a different box. After that I checked the dovecot config to lighten it, and ( only ) disabled fsync. I upgraded the RAM, added memory is used, but nothing changed. The human resources are constantly changing here, we were more before the problem started than now (around 10-15%), to illustrate the fact that I don't think it is linked to the number of users. I tried to recreate some accounts having the issue, but the problem appeared again. I upgraded Dovecot Friday to 1.1.11 from 1.1.7 (The installation was before 1.1.7, I did an upgrade some times ago). I used a command script to log Thunderbird's IMAP activity, everything is fine but there's no timestamp in the logs. So I'm only sure now this is not an erroneous packet/info sent problem. I watched the TB doc ( http://www.mozilla.org/projects/nspr/reference/html/prlog.html#25306 ) but there's no directive to put a timestamp for each line of log. The network is fine. I tried different configuration to be sure a device isn't doing something weird. Now, I don't know what to check to identify the issue. Hi Bastien, just a little thought because I had an issue like this (but with cyrus): Where is your thunderbird installation stored? In my case, it was not locally but on some windows mapped drive, and so also the imap cache of thunderbird was on this drive. Because we have a lot of mails in our accounts, the cache was about 50-100MB for some users, and users with a lot mail accounts had very often timeouts. This was due to performance problems on our network storage. Sometimes it also works to delete thunderbird´s cache files. Then it has to download all the headers again (bad with bad performing network storage :-/), but it seems that these cache files get corrupted from time to time and this also produces timeouts. kind regards Andreas -- Computer Bild Tarifsieger! Hello, I have a standard Mailman/Pipermail install with mboxes at MM_HOME/archives/public/listname.mbox/listname.box What's the best way to export these via IMAP using Dovecot 1.0rc15 on Debian etch? I know I could make a namespace with MM_HOME/archives/public/ but that would result in half of the directories being exported (the ones containing the HTML archives) being unusable. I could also create another directory and symlink all the mboxes in there but that seems wrong. Preferably, I'd like to have something like a namespace with a mail location of MM_HOME/archives/public/*.mbox/ but that doesn't work with v1.0 Ricardo

No one replied to my original email, and I was hoping if I re-phrase my question I can get an answer. I would like dovecot to provide system email (located at /mail/%u with system password and /home/%u) and also virtual email (/u/mail/VIRTUAL/%d/%u with password found at /u/exim/etc/VIRTUAL/%d/passwd). NO home space, but I would consider /home/%d/%u This I think has something to do with namespace, but the docs are too vague for me to understand. Can anyone help me out? I would very much appreciate it. I would even consider PAYING someone to set me straight. I am looking to migrate away from vm-pop3d. initially with POP3 and ultimately into IMAP. Thanks!

The expire configuration in the example config file in 1.1.11 is broken: root@omega:/etc/dovecot# /etc/init.d/dovecot restart Restarting IMAP/POP3 mail server: dovecot Unknown dict module: db expire plugin: dict_init() failed Error: imap dump-capability process returned 89 Fatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf failed! It's inconsistent with the documentation at http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Expire, so I've made the attached patch to try and fix it. Note: I don't know if this new configuration is correct either, because its a new box and I've not got any mails old enough to cause the plugin to try and write anything, but at least I can start dovecot like this. :) Regards, Rob

How is verbose_proctitle supposed to work? I set it in the config but I don't see anything particularly verbose while the mailbox is connected. How does IMAP lock the /var/spool/mail/user file? Here's my problem: I'm writing a script to expire old or oversize mail through a series of archive folders. I don't want to take the whole server down to do this, nor does it seem like I would have to lock the user out entirely if I can manage to emulate the locks correctly. I am able to lock /var/spool/mail/user (and ~user/mail/*) from procmail, dovecot popmail, and openwebmail using dotlocks. What do I do to prevent dovecot imap from writing the spool and various mbox files while my script is running? Just posix fcntl on the various files? I'm trying to use Mail::Box in perl which I'm having some problems with, corresponding with the developer, but if anyone has any easy way out I would appreciate the advice very much! Mark

Hello, We're having a problem in Dovecot 1.1.8 with a failed assertion on certain mbox format mailboxes. It happens both with deliver when it attempts to delier to the mailbox, and with IMAP connections for the affected box (though I'm not sure what they're doing at the time). Mar 3 12:55:26 <snip> dovecot: Panic: IMAP(<snip>): file istream.c: line 81 (i_stream_read): assertion failed: (_stream->skip != _stream->pos) This is on FreeBSD 6.2, without any nfs. The IMAP client is Squirrel Mail, but as I said, the assertion occurs with deliver as well. Apparently, moving the inbox out of the way fixed the problem for a while, but then it came back. Clearing out the dovecot index files seemed not to have any effect. [Dovecot] set \Seen flag on mail

I'm looking for a way to set the \Seen flag on certain mail no matter what. Currently I'm using a global sieve script to do this. From what I've read, there is no way to enforce the global script if the user creates their own sieve script. More details: I have a postfix transport that along with sender_bcc_maps and recipient_bcc_maps uses deliver to create a read only archive of user's mail. The mail intended to be archived is stored in a per user imap folder called "Archives" that uses the ACL plugin to make the messages there read only. In addition to that, I want the mail marked as \Seen upon delivery so that user's who subscribe to the Arhives folder don't see new mail indications and what not when mail is delivered there. Is there a better way to set the \Seen flag other than the global sieve script since it can be overridden by the user? -- J.P. Trosclair

Hello List, I want to allow plain text passwords only on ssl/tls. Is it possible to have: auth default { mechanisms = cram-md5 ntlm ...... } and then over-ride this when connection is ssl/tls to allow plain and login? I have tried adding "mechanisms = plain login cram-md5 ntlm" to "protocol imaps{}" as an example but I get an error that the protocol does not exist. I read somewhere today that dovecot enables plain automatically over secure connections (ssl/tls) but I'm not seeing it. Also, "auth default" suggests that "auth something_else" is possible.
