Moving dovecot to the nfs server directly solved all my weird problems.

I have this problem with some mailboxes (actually Maildirs) on my system. After some user's activity there is following information in dovecot logs: Jan 29 16:24:28 mailserv dovecot: IMAP(username): unlink(/var/spool/mail/imap/user/username/Maildir/cur/Sent:2,ST) failed: Is a directory User can not connect to his account neither via POP3 nor IMAP. There is one workaround I know which is: rm /var/spool/mail/imap/user/username/Maildir/dovecot.index* But after some time (some activity of user) the problem comes back. Mikie

[Dovecot] cram-md5 problem

I just updated to dovecot 1.1.10 from 1.1.2 and now anyone using cram-md5 can't get authenticated. I am using mysql for passwords (in plain text) and home directories. Per some googling I tried to set (in /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf): # SQL database userdb sql { # Path for SQL configuration file, see doc/dovecot-sql.conf for example args = /usr/local/etc/dovecot-sql.conf } but that didn't help. And in any case people NOT using cram-md5 can authenticate just fine, both before and after I made that change. This worked "out of the box" under 1.1.2, but is broken now. Any ideas appreciated. [Dovecot] Killing Dovect, an unpleasant surprise

When it came time to upgrade DC or replace the certificate, I would find the root instance of dovecot and do a kill -7 of it. Within 20-30 seconds, all the hundreds of DC related processes would go away, I would swap the executable or certificate/key and restart DC. Very clean and quick. Surprise. After switching from 1.0.15 to 1.1.8 and doing the kill, I found that all the imap-login instances had been inherited by the root (1) process and did not go away. Yikes! An Unpleasant Surprise. So instead of being down for a minute, I was out for a much more noticeable 5-7 minutes, while I QUICK did an awk of the ps list to give me the pids and then xarg killed them. My boss asked me if this was a pink slip notice. :( Is this The Way Things Will Be? Hi all, I am testing smartsieve with the patch found into the dovecot wiki (http://nopaste.biz/63514) but, i have some problems. All works fine, but incredibly slow..and i don't know why. [Dovecot] Push Mail?

Hi Guys, I am just about to get my hands on a new blackberry mobile phone and I have done quite a bit of reading about different bits about getting the blackberry to work with Dovecot. [Dovecot] deliver and qmail

Hi all, ok, after looking at all of the posts that I've found, and trying numerous settings, I am a little stumped as to how to set up the deliver program with qmail to get everything correct. Ultimately, I really don't want to do a lookup of the home dir if I don't have to. I'd rather specify the stuff in the .qmail-user file for that particular user to avoid the extra step. In looking in the wiki, it says for users without a lookup to use HOME=/path/to/user/homedir deliver -f $FROM_ENVELOPE but I can't do that in the .qmail file, which would normally look something like this : |/var/qmail/bin/preline -f /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver -f ${SENDER:-<>} I would rather not do the master authentication socket as described for obvious reasons. is there a format in the .qmail file that I can use with deliver to achieve what I want??? [Dovecot] Confused about permissions needed for shared mailbox

Hello, let me re-state, hopefully in clearer terms, what I tried to described in a previous thread : With dovecot-1.1.8/Maildir/LDAP pass/userdb (prefetch), I'm trying to set up a Maildir ".box" shared in rw between 2 users in a "Public" namespace. I can't get it to work unless I chmod 777 everything, which obiously is not what I want. 1) am I correct thinking that the system_user userdb extra_field and unix permissions should be enough to achieve that and that ACLs is only if I want to fine tunes mailbox permissions ? 2) let's say that my public namespace prefix is Public/, that the .box/ maildir is in /path/to/public/.box and my 2 users belong to the doveshared unix group. I thought it would be enough to have drwxrws--- 3 root doveshared 4096 Jan 28 14:55 public drwxrws--- 3 root doveshared 4096 Jan 28 14:55 public/.box -rwxrws--- 1 root doveshared 0 Jan 26 18:25 public/.box/dovecot-shared provided that my prefetch userdb returns system_user, as I think the following says in dovecot-ldap.conf : pass_attrs = uid=user,userPassword=password,homeDirectory=userdb_home,,,uidNumber=userdb_uid,gidNumber=userdb_gid,shadowMax=userdb_system_user and providedt that in LDAP shadowMax: 80 (whatever value). But this doesn't seem to work. By the way : Am I supposed to have a dovecot-shared file in public as well (that is not only in public/.box) ? 3) let's say I try ACLs with the same setup (anyone <all permissions> for starters) would pass_attrs = uid=user,userPassword=password,homeDirectory=userdb_home,,,uidNumber=userdb_uid,gidNumber=userdb_gid,shadowMax=userdb_system_user.title=userdb_acl_groups and title: group1,doveshared be a correct setup ? Do I need an dovecot-acl file only in .box or in public too ? My understanding is that my setup doesn't work because for some reason, dovecot doesn't see my users secondary groups or doesnt take them into account... Hello, I'm trying to set up, as explained in the wiki, shared mailboxes with symlink. I'm running dovecot-1.1.8 with LDAP pass/userdb. [Dovecot] (imap) killed with signal 9 on Linux/OpenVZ VPS

I'm trying to get dovecot running on my VPS and the main imap process is receiving a SIGKILL from what I presume to be the Linux Kernel and/or OpenVZ. This happens after I login and my client(s) just sit their idling. The mailbox is empty. I haven't changed much other than installing a few packages. I've also had this exact same problem on Debian 4.0 VPS (OpenVZ) under the same machine. Turning off SSL and logging in plain old IMAP didn't change anything. Under the Debian installation I tried the latest version of dovecot (1.1.8 or so), different I/O loop methods, turning them off, on, etc. The only other reference via Google I can find to this sort of problem is: http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2007-December/027440.html But that was with the login process, whereas mine is with the imap daemon. Any help is greatly appreciated. [Dovecot] Old Thunderbird problem - need a fix

I've been having a Dovecot/Thunderbird problem for about a year now and I need a fix. When I restart dovecot everything is fine but as the day progresses thing start deteriorating. When I empty my trash folder it doesn't empty. I get an indication that email has arrived in my inbox by the unread message count but can't access it. Messages arrive by appear to be empty. Folders that should be empty still have message counts showing. With all of the above problems - restarting dovecot make them all go away. I am doing something unusual in that I use Exim to directly deliver (maildir) to the inbox and other folders. And I have processes that take email out of certain folders (spam learning). Whatever the problem is I think that when I restart Dovecot I'm forcing Thunderbird to reconnect. Perhaps the solution is to somehow force Thunderbird to have to reconnect every time rather than have a persistent connection? Looking for suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Hello all, I've set up a webmail solution based on RedHat EL 5, sendmail, spamassassin, clamAV and dovecot by following this tutorial: http://www.redhat.com/magazine/025nov06/features/email/index.html I have configured everything without any problem, I can send and receive emails, using Maildir store format. Now, what I don't know how to set up: I would like to store the emails sent by the users in a dedicated store (Like Sent Emails in many webmails).... and I've got no idea on how to do this! By googling a little, I found this thread ( http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2007-April/021447.html) where a plugin is mentionned. Has it been developped or is there another solution? I'm using dovecot 1.0.7, shipped with RHEL 5 distribution. I am really discovering all the products around the email so I'm a bit confused. Thanks a lot for your answer, Pierre

Hi there, I'm getting a lot of this message in production log: Created dotlock file's timestamp is different than current time (1232468644 vs 1232468524): /path/to/dovecot.index.log The IT guy swears the clocks are sincronized. [Dovecot] No Spaces in Directory names

How can I make it so my users can not create folders with spaces in them? Or allow them to create such folders but rewrite them on the hardrive with a "_" or some other symbol. I have looked threw the wiki but couldn't find anything about folder name restrictions or folder name rewriting (rewrite the space to a "_"). Im having problems with some of the expire and compress scripts when it hits these types of folders. [Dovecot] Dovecot discards mail over quota

I'm new to Dovecot, using 1.1.8 and I just wanted to verify that what I am observing is the intended behavior. I'm using Maildir++ quota. When a message is delivered to a mailbox that cannot accept the message because it would place them over the quota limit, deliver states to the MTA that the messsage was delivered successfully (example using postfix): Jan 17 12:05:31 msa postfix/pipe[13983]: 088C5B9D47: to=<test(a)example.com>, relay=dovecot, delay=0.72, delays=0.34/0.02/0/0.36, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (delivered via dovecot service) But in actuality the mail is discarded (dropped). Then a bounce is created stating the mail was rejected: Your message to <test(a)example.com> was automatically rejected: Quota exceeded (mailbox for user is full). Question: is it possible (without changing code) to alter this to where deliver would instead tempfail or something. Somehow it seems wrong to me to tell the MTA that everything is good, and then silently discard messages - regardless of the fact dovecot creates a bounce. Dear team, I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'd like to know the behavior of dovecot in a particular stuation. My questions are as follows. In /etc/dovecot-ldap.conf, 'hosts=' field is the one which can be used to specify availabled ldap server to access from the clients to authorize. And also sevral ldap servers can be specified in 'hosts =' field as shown like below. hosts = ldap-server1.example.com ldap-server2.example.com ※both server have the same configuration and available to replication ldap-server1(master) to ldap-server2(slave). If this is right, how does dovecot know which ldap server is currently used? and if the master dies, how does dovecot know and switch to slave one? Hello! I run Dovecot on CentOS 4 (dovecot-1.1.4-0_81.el4), and I *also* run the "Alpine" mail system that comes with that OS. Alpine still writes out the 'FOLDER INTERNAL DATA' pseudo-message at the beginning of each user's mbox, but dovecot does not. I make use of that record as a simle/quick way to verify when a user actually last read their e-mail (for administrative purposes, identifying stale/unused accounts), so is there any way to configure/command dovecot to write (or update) these hidden messages? (Note: I tried looking in the archives, but most references seemed to be about this message being a 'side effect' of transferring *from* UW IMAP, and how to get 'rid' of it. Not what I need. :) Apologies if this was covered before in a different thread.) - Charles

In reviewing the differences between 1.1.8 and 1.1.9 I saw a probable bug in the new function uint_cmp() in src/lib-storage/index/maildir/ maildir-sync-index.c: if (*i1 < *i2) return -1; else if (*i1 > *i2) return -1; else return 0; The second case should return 1 not -1.

This release includes two other small fixes as well. Changelog v0.10.5: - Fixed a segfault bug in the authentication time-out. Bug report and trace provided by Wolfgang Friebel. - Fixed maximum permissions for uploaded scripts; was 0777. Hello I noticed a problem after upgrading to 1.1.8 Users that access to their mailboxes using webmail squirrelmail and HTTPS using HTTP seems to work correctly but it not safe enough ... There is an error message saying the imap server send a BYE command ... I downgraded our Dovecot server to 1.1.7 then it works again ... Hi, are there any known issues with symlinked-shared-mailboxes and kmail? I use virtual users (LDAP), so there are no unix-permissions related problems here: all mailboxes are owned by the local user vmail. Each user maildir has some symlinks to shared mailboxes. This works fine if I use squirrelmail as a MUA. kmail instead seems to have some problems: if I save a mail into the shared-folder, the other users are seeing this new mail almost immediately. But if I delete(!) a mail from the shared-folder, the list of the other kmails remains untouch. Refreshing does nothing. I have to close kmail and restart. Is this related to some sort of wrong config of the shared mailboxes or is this a (known) dovecot <-> kmail problem? -- Wilhelm

I'd like to know the differences between shared mailboxes support between 1.1. and 1.2 branches and if it may be considered "safe" to use shared mailboxes on a production server running 1.1.8+ dovecot version (i.e. is it working and how, compared to the upcoming 1.2 release). I guess part of the answer is in the diffences between shared and public namespaces handling. [Dovecot] get maildir current quota usage from external program

Hello, i want to get the maildir current quota usage of an user, but i'd know what is the better way to do. in imap clients my quota usage, in example, show: 505KB, but if i sum only the size of each message from Maildir, i get total: 440KB, trying to use real and apparent block size but the sum differs from value showed in imap client. is quota usage based on why, have another way to do this? thanks

[Dovecot] Postfix and Dovecot

Hi Everybody, I'm mount two failover servers which use Postfix and Dovecot but the hostname of the machines r diferent: first node # uname -n # mail secound node #uname -n #mail2 So far so good, the real problem is that the e-mail file name on server is like this: 1232449377.P31789Q0M963611.mail2 and when I using the server called mail the file stay like this: 1232449377.P31789Q0M963611.mail I'm using drbd disk for the mailboxes and when I'm using the server called mail the files with mail2 on the end is not read for the dovecot when the user turn on the mail client but if I change the end from mail2 to mail that's ok the dovecot can read. How can I make dovecot read both files or any name on the end? [Dovecot] Dovecot upgrade broke per-user Sieve scripts

Hi all, I'm migrating my private mail server from Dovecot 1.0.10 to Dovecot 1.1.4 (both the latest package in Ubuntu Hardy and Intrepid, resp.). I'm using Postfix with Postfixadmin virtual users , passing mail to Dspam, which in turn passes email to the Dovecot LDA. The relevant configuration section is attached below. When running on the old version of Dovecot, the LDA correctly executed either the user's personal sieverc script, or the global sieverc, as expected. However, after the upgrade to 1.1.4, Dovecot will not execute any per-user Sieve scripts, although the configuration and file permissions hasn't changed. I've added debug logging to Dovecot, and the relevant portions of the log file are also attached below. What am I missing here? Why can't cmusieve find the user's script? Did the configuration for Sieve change? I've read and re-read the Dovecot wiki page for Sieve, and I can't see why my configuration should be causing any troubles. All help or suggestions are greatly appreciated. [Dovecot] TLS / SSL login with Thunderbird very slow ?

Hi , i use dovecoz 1.1.4 with TLS / SSL only. i takes up to ~10 seconds that Thunderbird login and send the mail. why is this so slow? any chance to speed up this ? marko from Hamburg thank you

This could help figuring out auth cache size. + deliver: Added rejection_subject setting, which is used for rejected mails. + pop3: Prevent clients from looping forever trying to fetch an expunged message. + If login process crashes, log the IP address that (maybe) caused it. + If core dump limit is 0, add "core dumps disabled" to startup log line. + Log better messages for "Permission denied" errors - mbox: Fixed assert-crash with pop3_lock_session=yes - dbox: Fixes to handling maildir-converted files. - Auth cache wasn't working correctly for all fields (e.g. allow_nets) with blocking passdbs (e.g. mysql). - pgsql: Handle reconnecting to server without failing auth lookups. - Berkeley DB memory/resource leak fixes. - maildir: Fixes to handling over 26 keywords.
