Outlook creating IMAP folders even though forbidden by ACLs

Hi! Is it well known that Outlook cannot process RFC 2086 or RFC 4134 ACLs? We are using Outlook 2013, 2016 and 2019, and with 2013 can definitely create shared folders with content that are not saved to the server, even though Outlook 'pretends' quite erroneously that they are - black hole for critical email that we must keep according to engineering contracts for design documentation purposes. Problem with replication between two servers (ispconfig)

Hi people, I am setting up replication between two servers. The installation of the servers was done using ispconfig and the operating system is debian 10. The problem is that after following the guide for this configuration, https://wiki.dovecot.org/Replication, when I start the server, replication does not start. I have also checked, via tcpdump, on the port associated with doveadm. If I force it with the command "doveadm -D sync -u user @ domain -d -N -l 30 -U" the replication happens, but it is not updating when the user receives emails on server01. At this time server02 will not receive emails (via postfix), and will also not have users accessing via pop3 or imap, but I have the idea of configuring so that both servers have these services working. Hi list, I’m experimenting with the mail-crypt-plugin in Dovecot v2.3.4.1 on Debian 10 Buster. I’m also running a OpenLDAP-Server for user lookup. sudden performance drop - i/o related

Hi I have exim/dovecot server that worked great for last few years and two weeks ago it got ill ;) First were users reporting errors on saving mails to Sent (timeouts). Now the logs are infested with warnings about long waits: May 10 10:18: Maildir /mail/xxx Synchronization took 193 seconds (1 new msgs, 0 flag change attempts, 0 expunge attempts) May 10 10:18: Maildir /mail/xxx Synchronization took 125 seconds (1 new msgs, 0 flag change attempts, 0 expunge attempts) May 10 10:18: Maildir /mail/xxx Synchronization took 211 seconds (1 new msgs, 0 flag change attempts, 0 expunge attempts) May 10 10:18: Maildir /mail/xxx Synchronization took 107 seconds (8 new msgs, 0 flag change attempts, 0 expunge attempts) May 10 10:18: Transaction log file /mail/xxx was locked for 36 seconds (Mailbox was synchronized) May 10 10:18: Transaction log file /mail/xxx was locked for 160 seconds (Mailbox was synchronized) May 10 10:18: Transaction log file /mail/xxx was locked for 72 seconds (Mailbox was synchronized) May 10 10:18: Locking transaction log file /mail/xxx took 60 seconds (syncing) May 10 10:18: Locking transaction log file /mail/xxx took 38 seconds (syncing) May 10 10:18: Locking transaction log file /mail/xxx took 35 seconds (syncing) It looks like i/o risen from 150writes/s to 500writes/s (in top hours) - but there's no real change in number of emails or the volume. Number of users is steady (~100 active users, ~250 imap sessions), number of emails (by count or by volume) is rising and falling within 15% margin. The box is FreeBSD 11.4, dovecot is 2.3.13. Filesystem is ZFS, disks are fine, free space is around 20% (~200GB) Layout is Maildir. CPU is not overloaded (2x6core), same with memory (48GB). I didn't change anything in configuration. Tonight I did some finetuning like maildir_copy_with_hardlinks=yes or mail_fsync=never/optimized (I'm not happy with that but I'm afraid it won't really help and I'll be able to revert that). I'm also thinking about switching from Maildir to sdbox (I know it won't hurt). I don't know where to look to find where the i/o goes. I don't have any metrics/stats enabled (I looked at the docs but it looks it's not really simple and needs some digging to get valuable config). Maybe somebody has suggestions what to look for? For detailed per-process stats I need to rebuild kernel with dtrace (other night I guess)... Writing an custom imap command

I'm interested in writing a custom imap command that behaves a bit like IDLE but synchronizes some state that is specific to my mail client / mail server. I found that stateless commands were trivial to understand, and I really like the plugin pattern for registering custom commands. But I have a few questions on how to write a long-running command that I was not able to answer by reading through the code. This mailing list seems like the best place to ask them. Why does cmd-idle.c sometimes call client_command_free()? But sometimes it doesn't? For example, cmd_idle_continue() frees it in some branches but not others. That makes no sense to me; it seems like it should be based on your entrypoint (mailbox notify callback vs input callback vs timeout callback), not based on which branch of logic within that entrypoint. 2. Why does cmd-idle.c ever call client_destroy()? That seems like something that should be invoked only by the imap process, not by any command. It calls it in cmd-idle.c:idle_callback (which is a mailbox notify callback). It invokes it after idle_sync_now() when it detects that client->disconnected is set. Maybe that happens in imap_sync_init() or something? 3. Why does cmd-idle.c ever call client_disconnect()? That also seems like the responsibility of the imap process, and not any command. idle_client_input_more() detects when i_stream_read returns -1, meaning that the client has *already disconnected*. Then it calls client_disconnect(). I think this is the crazy part... the istream is effectively unique to the imap process, so it seems unreasonable that any command is responsible for cleaning it up; it should just always happen at the imap process level before exiting, right? 4. What does client_continue_pending_input() actually do, and under what conditions does it need to be called? There is one place that you *can't* call it; there is a section in imap-client.c:client_handle_input() that calls imap-client.c:client_handle_next_command(), which calls the cmd->func(). That makes sense; that's the input trigger for the command plugin, so maybe you only have to trigger it when you are receiving input that doesn't fit into the normal command args behavior. It has a comment that says "this function is called at the end of I/O callbacks (and only there)". It _is_ called by client_input() and by client_output(), but also by: - cmd-idle.c:idle_client_input (io_add_istream callback) - cmd-append.c:client_input_append (io_add_istream callback) - imap-search.c:cmd_search_more_callback (timeout_add callback) The first two cases seem to be the only io_add_istream() commands that even exist, so that explains them. I can't explain the imap-search.c case at all. Reading through it I have really no idea what client_continue_pending_input is really doing. My command has a DONE mechanic just like IDLE so I'm pretty sure I need to invoke this function, I'm just concerned I'm going to do it wrong if I don't understand the mechanics of it.

huge mdbox broken / Log synchronization error

Hi, its the second time in 6 Month i have issues with a huge mdbox. It broken in November and i restored from backup because force-resync twice didnt fix it. (And restore from borg-backup was MUCH faster than force-resync) This time i have heavy delivery into that mailbox (postfix concurrency 1) and i tried merging folders with doveadm move. The move froze and now i seem to have a broken mdbox: Errors are: May 05 10:21:09 lda(inbox(a)wasteland.rfc822.org): Error: Log synchronization error at seq=2736,offset=135540 for /var/vmail/wasteland.rfc822.org/inbox/mdbox/storage/dovecot.map.index: Extension record inc drops number below zero (uid=7757856, diff=-1, orig=0) trying root@pax:~# doveadm -D -v force-resync -u inbox(a)wasteland.rfc822.org \* now. Although this will mostly likely take 8-10 hours. Mailbox is 44GByte (Compressed mdbox) and 220K folders. How to set lmtp delivery file/directory permissions?

I have my postfix/dovecot virtual mail system essentially (otherwise) configured where Postfix is calling Dovecot for its virtual transport: virtual_transport = lmtp:unix:private/dovecot-lmtp But I can't for the life of me see how to change the file permissions dovecot uses to create maildir folders and files. I looked at the maildir [1], lmtp [2], and other documents and they are either silent on permissions or seem to reference a shared mail permissions document [3] that claims file and folder permissions are inherited. I want all files dovecot creates to be made accessible to the mail group. Please tell me this wasn't hard-coded a la postfix. Doveadm sync verbose not working?

Hi Was trying a sync with eg this. old is a host set up in my ssh config file. the user exists on both sides. The sync completes correctly copying mails back and forth, but offers no feedback. doveadm sync -u user(a)domain.com -f -R remote:old If I add -v I don't get any more information. Am I missing something? The manual says its meant to give more info and progress. doveadm -v sync -u user(a)domain.com -f -R remote:old Putting -v elsewhere on the commandline results in an error, so I think its in the right place. However -D works, but its a bit too verbose ... doveadm -D sync -u user(a)domain.com -f -R remote:old dovecot --version 2.3.7.2 (3c910f64b) P.

Adding virtual folders to an existing dovecot installation

Hello dear dovecot mailinglist, I am having a dovecot installation that is working so far (together with sieve and managesieve). Now, I found the possibility to add a virtual folder to the server promising. I sort various mails using a per-user sieve script into subfolders. This works well on the latop but the mobile device does not like too many folders to check. So, I wanted to create a virtual inbox that holds all unread messages. I found this documentation: https://doc.dovecot.org/configuration_manual/virtual_plugin/ Now, I have first one question: When I use the virtual folder and read a message/mark it as read, will this be reflected on the underlaying folder or will it cause trouble on dovecot? As far as I understand, usage of sieve filtering and the virtual plugin is considered critical as mentioned in the documentation. This is due to the fact, that the virtual mailboxes are read-only by default (unless a folder is prefixed with a !-symbol). Sieve will try to filter the virtual folder as well be default and moving a message to another folder will fail the read-only assumption. Honestly, I do not get the content of https://doc.dovecot.org/ configuration_manual/virtual_plugin/#sieve-filters-with-virtual-mailboxes by 100%. The first paragraph indicates that sieve plus virtual mailboxes are a complete no-go, while the second indicates that a safe configuration is needed. Could someone please elaborate this a bit more? I have not yet changed anything as I did not want blindly break my production mail system. The current (unaltered) configuration I will attach below. Bonus question: Is it possible to restrict the effect of the virtual plugin to certain (virtual) user accounts? disable pop3 ports?

I admit I don't quite understand dovecot's config yet, but this is driving me batty. I was looking at my server and noticed that dovecot was listening on the pop3 ports (110/TCP). Since I do not use pop3 at all, nor does anyone who has ever or ever will connect to the server, that seems like a needless waste. So I went through the config files and commented out every reference to pop3 in them. But when I restart dovecot, it STILL opens a listener on 110. How do I fix this? The ONLY external ports I want dovecot listening to are imap4 and imap4s. Thanks! -- Dan Egli From my Test Server

mail_crypt module and error with tmp directory

Hi, I successfully enable mail_crypt module but I'm experiencing a strange behaviour with tmp directory while accessing with POP3 protocol: I see in log file: Error: istream-seekable: safe_mkstemp(/tmp/dovecot.pop3.) failed: Permission denied I changed tmp directory configuration (mail_temp_dir variable) and setting it with 777 permission, but the error is the same. On client side it's working everything, but I'd like to understand the error and if I have to be worried about it. [Dovecot] Doveadm sometimes failed "to iterate through some users" after upgrade to 2.2

Hi, I'm running every week in cron "doveadm expunge -A mailbox Spam before 30d" and monthly "doveadm quota recalc -A". After the upgrade to dovecot 2.2.12 (from 2.1.17), "doveadm -A" sometimes exit with this error: doveadm(user(a)domain.com): Error: User listing returned failure doveadm: Error: Failed to iterate through some users # echo $? 75 If I re-run the same command the user where doveadm stops changeing (always in alphabetical order): info@ mario@ pippo@ zazza@ and finally, after 3 or 4 run, ends with success. I have enable debug (via doveadm -D and auth/mail debub in 10-logging.con) but there are no errors or difference in the log when doveadm exit with the error (error code is 75). We got this error: 'Can't open log file /var/log/IRV_MdM/Dovecot_main.log: Permission denied' Please have a look at our Problem. Is it a bug or an incorrect config ? Can the disable_plaintext_auth setting get overridden for a specific port?

In 10-auth.conf, I have "disable_plaintext_auth = yes" For port 143, I'd like to do something like this to override that setting: service imap-login { inet_listener imap { port = 143 disable_plain_text_auth = no } } Based on https://wiki.dovecot.org/LoginProcess and https://doc.dovecot.org/configuration_manual/service_configuration/ it doesn't seem like this is supported. But maybe there is another way to accomplish this?

Hi folks. I'm VERY new to Dovecot and Sieve. But I'm having an issue that I need help with. For some reason my sieve daemon won't allow people to log on. I have dovecot set to read information from a MySQL table, and that works fine. I can login to dovecot's imap server just fine. But I have SOGo for the webmail and it won't login to the sieve daemon. Ability to reject invalid client certificate at TLS handshake time

Hi, After a bit of struggling I've been able to set up TLS client certificate authentication with Dovecot for both IMAP and Submission. Users are required to present a valid certificate, cool so far! What I noticed however on non-StartTLS listeners IMAPS (993) and SMTPS (465), is that during the TLS handhake presenting a valid client certificate is seemingly optional and is only checked later at time of protocol-level login (external auth in my case). I'd like to change that for security purposes and also a bit of obscurity. Not having the ability to interact with Dovecot on protocol level lowers the attack vector as well as the ease of checking my network security. Also, it would prevent (anonymous) network scanners to easily detect what kind of service is running on the port as they can see the IMAP/SMTP banner without presenting a valid TLS client certificate currently. Is it possible in any version of Dovecot to configure it to set up a TLS server listening context that requires a handshake with a valid client certificate? I'm using Dovecot 2.3.4.1 (actual Debian Buster version 2.3.4.1-5+deb10u6), but willing to upgrade to any newer version when this is offered. Going through some newer revisions changelog this seems not the case, so I didn't spend time on upgrading yet. What imap ssl/auth settings work best with MS Outlook?

I repeatedly have a hell of a time getting clients' Outlook software working well with Dovecot. It's hard for me to test myself since I don't have Outlook and it would be impossible to keep up with all the different versions anyway. I've got the following settings, currently: disable_plaintext_auth = yes auth_username_format = %Ln auth_mechanisms = plain login ssl = yes service imap-login { # inet_listener imap { # port = 143 # } inet_listener imaps { port = 993 ssl = yes } } service imap { client_limit = 1 } It always seems to be hit or miss with outlook as to which encryption setting to use, which port to try, etc. With a recent client, I couldn't get them successfully logged in no matter what manual settings we tried. If someone can give me some tips on how to get most versions of Outlook cooperating well with Dovecot, I'd appreciate it.

Folks, I am still trying to get help here. Let me re-state what is going on. I have a webmail program (SOGo) that connects to the Dovecot sieve system to handle things like mail filters and what not. That way dovecot's lda program can move things where they belong. So I went through the config files, and found the places where I need to enable sieve (this is in Gentoo Linux, by the way). Now, when dovecot starts I do see a listener on the sieve port on localhost: #netstat -tl | grep sieve tcp 0 0 localhost:sieve 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN And when I telnet to the port, it does connect. But it doesn't say much. telnet localhost sieve Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. 220 jupiter.newideatest.site Dovecot ready. Yet every example I see online is showing a HECK of a lot more than this. So what's up? Anyone got any idea what I did wrong? I've put the 90-sieve.conf file on my web server at www.newideatest.site/90-sieve.conf for those who want to see it. If any other config files are wanted/needed to help figure this out, let me know what they are and I'll take care of it. Using dovecot-2.3.14-1.fc33.x86_64 with FreeIPA & Kerberos if a user's password is expired in a web mail login, e.g., with Squirrelmail, the user sees: "Unknown user or password incorrect." Can Dovecot be installed with Postfix and without being behind a web server ? I want a mail service that can only be accessed by POP3(s)/IMAP(s) and not by a web UI. Thanks.

connection closes every 10 minutes

Greetings, I use mutt on Ubuntu to access my IMAP mailboxes, on my Centos email server that runs dovecot. Everything has worked without problems for years. About one week ago, the connection between mutt and dovecot became unstable. Before, I could leave mutt connected for days in a row, no problem. Now, everything still works fine, except... I get every ten minutes I get "connection timed out" in Mutt's status line, and hundreds of messages like Apr 12 16:12:49 SERVERNAME dovecot: imap(ACCOUNTNAME): Logged out in=164 out=757 what puzzles me is that I did not touch anything both on my server and on my desktop, except an "apt-get update" some days before this started. But cannot see how it would be related anyway, nor have I found anything online like this. Any help to understand what happened and fix it is very welcome. Marco

How to omit the DH parameter in v2.3.3+ ( as stated in 'Upgrading Dovecot v2.2 to v2.3' )

Hi, i just finished tuning my dovecot setup after upgrading to 2.3.7.2. I needed to add the "ssl_dh =„ parameter to my config as stated in the online docs at dovecot.org <http://dovecot.org/>. That was no problem and is well documented there and the hint in the log on startup also helped to quickly identify the problem. After that i was curious and read more and did a lot of research. But i just could not find out how to „omit“ the DH parameter as stated in the online docs: https://doc.dovecot.org/installation_guide/upgrading/from-2.2-to-2.3/ <https://doc.dovecot.org/installation_guide/upgrading/from-2.2-to-2.3/> It says : „Since v2.3.3+ DH parameter usage is optional and can be omitted.“ I trried it in different ways. First i disallowed DH on the ssl_cipher_list like it was suggested in the example in this doc. But it will still give Errors on startup/reload of dovecot. Next i tried ssl_dh = that also did not work. I could not figure out how to „omit“ the DH parameter. Is it just my misinterpretation of the config doc? thanks for clarifying Best regards joerg

doveadm sync duplicating emails

I'm upgrading a mail server using postfix 2.9.6 and dovecot 2.0.19 to a new server running postfix 3.4.13 and dovecot 2.3.7.2 (using Maildir format on both sides). I had trouble getting doveadm backup to work for one user, while all the others worked straight away. It would complain about problems on the old server in the Maildir/dovecot* files. I managed to get it to work by removing all the dovecot* files under Maildir for that one user (accepting that this would mean clients having to redownload emails). >From that point, a doveadm backup worked. Using roundcube to look at the new mail server, I could see everything arrived. At this point, some mail generated on the new mail server would go to the new mail server, but all other mail is going to the old mail server. I then tried to use doveadm sync -1R to update the new mail server so the new server contains all the mail from the old server plus the new mail that has been locally delivered. What then happened was that all the new emails delivered to the old server since the backup were copied to the new server, and all the emails that were locally delivered on the new mail server were still there. (So far so good). But I also saw that every email that was on the old server before the backup now appeared twice on the new mail server. Running sync again would mean I had three copies of email. The sync ran quickly - much too quickly for these extra copies to have been sent over the network. It appears that the sync made extra local copies on the new server. I see no errors in logs that can explain things. Looking at the email, the files stored in the cur directories are there multiple times; they have different names, but identical content. Trying "doveadm deduplicate -F user-list ALL" ran quickly and to no effect (where user-list is a file with a list of users). Trying "doveadm deduplicate -F user-list -m ALL" takes 100% cpu and a long time to run and still running right now after 4 hours. Judging by the disk space usage freed up, this is going to take a very long time to complete. Has anybody got any idea what might cause this and what change I should make? Every few days, my mailbox seizes up. No mail come in to my imap clients. I'm running dovecot installed on Debian Bullseye, the dovecot packages are all: 1:2.3.13+dfsg1-1 I am running sendmail and using procmail for local delivery. I suspect, but am not certain, that this may be some locking issue between procmail and dovecot but I have never been able to prove that. The final procmail rule which appends messages to my mailbox looks like this, the trailing ':' causes procmail to use a lockfile: :0: /var/mail/mgrant The locking config lines in 10-mail.conf are commented, but I have also tried uncommenting them, did not help: #mbox_read_locks = fcntl #mbox_write_locks = fcntl dotlock Though sometimes it seems to fix itself after a few hours, the only way I have found to fix this quickly is to manually remove the cache files and restart dovecot: rm ~/mail/.imap/INBOX/* systemctl restart dovecot I am not even sure this is a locking issue. Something definitely gets corrupted though. I do have several IMAP clients hitting the same mailbox (phone, laptop, desktop). On the phone, I run K9 and also the gmail client which talks imap. As I continue to test freeipa-server-4.9.3-1, on Fedora 33 with dovecot-2.3.14-1 I've run into the following issues with web mail and Dovecot integration. 1. I followed https://www.freeipa.org/page/Dovecot_IMAPS_Integration_with_FreeIPA_using_S… but I couldn't get web mail to login until I used the suggestion from https://blog.delouw.ch/2017/02/19/integrate-dovecot-imap-with-freeipa-using… and changed logins auth_mechanisms = plain gssapi login which allowed logins of FreeIPA Kerberos users. 2. even with auth_mechanisms = plain gssapi login, I could then no longer login to SquirrelMail webmail with any local Unix (non-Kerberized) users. Live migrating index/control files

Hello, We are running a director-based dovecot cluster where the user's maildir and the indexes/control files are, for legacy reasons, stored on separate NFS-backends, i.e.: mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir:CONTROL=/mail/control/%1u/%2u/%u:INDEX=/mail/index/%1u/%2u/%u Both ~/Maildir and /mail/{control,index}/ are separate NFS-mounts, and we now want to consolidate all files to the user's home directory instead. The end goal is to stop using NFS altogether. I have devised a four step plan for gradually migrating the index/control files into the user's maildir, on a per-user basis: 1. Kick the user in an attempt to flush the user's index files: `doveadm director kick <username>` 2. Rsync the index/control files into the user's maildir: `rsync -uav /mail/{index,control}/${user:0:1}/${user:0:2}/${user}/ /mail/${user:0:1}/${user:0:2}/${user}/Maildir/;` 3. Update the (redis-based) userdb for the specific user to override mail_location to use the default CONTROL/INDEX locations: `{"mail": "maildir:~/Maildir"}` 4. Kick the user one last time so that they reconnect using the new settings. Unfortunately, after running this for a small batch of users, we recieved a couple reports that their clients had started to resynchronize and redownload their mailboxes, which is exactly what we're trying to avoid. There are no index related error messages related to the few users that reported these issues. From my understanding, clients become confused when the control files are changed or lost (`dovecot-uidlist` and `dovecot-uidvalidity`), so I suspect the kick + rsync + kick procedure is not robust enough for this. Does anyone have any experience with performing such a migration without taking systems offline for the duration? Any suggestions to make this process more transparent for our users, so as to not induce panic when their mailboxes abruptly appear empty? Best regards, Eirik

Hi, After a change of server, I cannot see my mails. postfix is OK and I receive emails. If I send emails, with roundcube or thunderbird, I can see these new sent emails. Access rights seems OK. Dovecot with debug trace does not complain. Hi, I installed dovecot on a new up-to-date RHEL8 test system and configured a simple mail_filter plugin which only copies the input back to the output (i.e., the filter does nothing special). On RHEL8 I get the following panic when saving the mail. The Dovecot version that comes with RHEL8 is dovecot-2.3.8-4.el8.x86_64 The mail_filter works correctly on an Ubuntu machine )2.2.33.2- 1ubuntu4.7) Any idea what's causing this panic on RHEL8 and how to fix it? Hi Dovecot community, I would like to share a problem I saw a few days ago. Any comment is highly appreciated. *Steps to reproduce* 0. Version of Dovecot I use is v2.3.11.3. 1. Prepare 2 Dovecot backends: - One backend is used as the source of dsync command. Other backend is used as the destination of the dsync command. - Mailbox format is Maildir. Mail dir of two test accounts is empty. 2. Prepare the test account in the source of dsync: - Send a test message to the test account. For example, I use swaks: swaks --server 127.0.0.1 --port 24 --protocol LMTP --to user1@local - Use doveadm expunge command to clean mail dir of the test account: doveadm expunge -u user1@local mailbox INBOX all 3. CA certs for Dovecot-as-client (proxy)

Hi, When using proxy=y, ssl=yes (Dovecot 2.3.13) I consistently get this logged when trying to validate the remote server cert. "Disconnected by server: Connection closed: Received invalid SSL certificate: unable to get local issuer certificate: /C=BE/O=GlobalSign nv-sa/CN=AlphaSSL CA - SHA256 - G2 (check ssl_client_ca_* settings?)" As I read the 2.3.x documentation (and the error logged) Dovecot needs to have the trusted CA cert with ssl_client_ca_file or ssl_client_ca_dir. So, I've tried every combination of putting the cert (and the GlobalSign root CA signing it) in ssl_client_ca_dir and individually and as a bundle in ssl_client_ca_file without luck. But even though I can verify the cert with "openssl s_client -connect" and with "openssl verify", no matter what I put in the ssl_client_ca_* settings it seems Dovecot just ignores it. It does complain though, if I point it to a non-existent file, but not if I just fill the file with invalid cert data which can't be parsed. I end up getting in doubt whether it consults the cert data at all. I'm a bit at loss on how to debug this further, short of running it in gdb. "verbose_ssl" doesn't really say anything about the process of find a CA cert to check with. Have I misunderstood the config? /Peter

systemd timeout on startup after upgrade

Hello *, I have upgraded today a Debian buster (stable) system to bullseye (still testing). After upgrade I did a complete reboot of the VM. Dovecot version changed from 1:2.3.4.1-5+deb10u6 to 1:2.3.13+dfsg1-1 `systemctl start dovecot` now complains Job for dovecot.service failed because a timeout was exceeded. As a workaround I set "TimeoutStartSec=infinity" in dovecot.service. But `systemctl status` now says: Active: activating (start) since Sat 2021-04-17 17:53:58 CEST; 1h 23min ago Dovecot itself is working fine without problems. LMTP accepts new mails and IMAP works. It's just that systemd doestn't notice it running. Any idea what causes this? Dovecot discards mail in a certain situation

Hi all: I'm using Dovecot with Postfix (via LMTP). Because Postfix doesn't de-duplicate recipients, I'm using sieve to drop duplicates, following this recipe: https://serverfault.com/questions/112958/postfix-aliases-and-duplicate-e-ma… A "sieve_before" script contains: require ["duplicate"]; if duplicate { discard; stop; } It works well, except when the recipient is over quota. IMAP session hangs on 8k-long commands if COMPRESS=DEFLATE is enabled

Hi there, Dovecot 2.3.7 appears to hang when the client sends a long command after enabling the IMAP COMPRESS extension [RFC 4978]. PoC script attached along with the doveconf(1) output. Without COMPRESS=DEFLATE, and with the default ‘imap_max_line_length’ value (64k) I'm able send commands up to 65539 bytes long (that's 3 bytes more than 2¹⁶, so maybe the leading tag and the trailing CRLF aren't counted), after which Dovecot rightfully replies with tagged BAD responses. $ COMPRESS=n /tmp/many-fetch.pl 65539 […] C: x UID FETCH 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,… [65539 bytes] S: x OK Fetch completed (0.005 + 0.001 + 0.004 secs). It's identical with 2.3.4 (Buster), the server also hang past 8192 bytes. 2.2.27 (Stretch) and 2.2.13 (Jessie) are able to send replies to 8k-long commands, but hang past 65536 bytes. For all 3 releases, without COMPRESS=DEFLATE Dovecot doesn't hang and rightfully sends tagged BAD responses to commands of size >65539 bytes. So while the hanging behavior appears to be a long-standing bug, the fact that's it's now hit at min($imap_max_line_length, 8192) instead of $imap_max_line_length seems to be a regression from somewhere between 2.2.27 and 2.3.4. Quota warning invoked twice when moving messages to Trash folder

(90%). The script runs, and the mailbox sits at about 93%. When moving a handful of messages to the Trash folder, the 100% quota-warning service is invoked. But getting the quota through 'doveadm quota get -u user' yields that same 93% used. I ran strace on the main process that is taking in IMAP commands from the Thunderbird client. My guess as to what is happening is when the "uid move" command is received, The messages are copied first, then removed from the server, causing the quota to spike for a very short amount of time. Are those suspicions correct? After looking at RFC 6851, Section 3.3 (Semantics of MOVE and UID MOVE), it states: "Each message included in the set is moved, rather than copied ... ". Any idea why the spike in quota usage occurs? Thanks.

POP3 server fails to replicate deletions

When I delete messages with POP3, the change doesn't get replicated. To reproduce: run the pop3 server from the command line, type this to it: DELE 1 QUIT This correctly deletes the first message on the local server, but it does not send a replication notify message. Poking around a bit with gdb, it appears that the pop3 server decides incorrectly that the changes it is making are not worth notifying about. It is hard to find something that doesn't happen, and I would appreciate suggestions for further debugging this case. I do get the expected replication when new mail arrives and also when I manipulate my mailbox with IMAP. I have tested this with Dovecot 2.3.7.2 (on Ubuntu 20.04) and with the git HEAD, 2.3.14+. What may be the same bug was reported on this list last August against Dovecot 2.3.8, but it got no reply then. My mail store is on a local ext4 file system.
