Instead fsck is run which preserves as much of the original index as possible. This is important with dbox at least since index files are the only place where the latest flag/keyword changes are. Recent alphas were also modifying process's fd limits. The current behavior is: - If current fd limit is less than login_max_processes_count (imap +pop3) + max_mail_processes, log a warning at startup: "fd limit 1024 is lower than what Dovecot can use under full load (more than 1234). Either grow the limit or change login_max_processes_count and max_mail_processes settings" - Since 1024 is a common default limit, I dropped max_mail_processes default to 512. - Login processes drop their fd limit to the maximum number of fds needed, plus a few more just in case.

[Dovecot] Proxy problems with 1.0.5 !

Hi I am trying to do a staged migration over to dovecot, but having troubles at the first hurdle. I setup the proxy feature to redirect most of our users back to the current Courier imap/pop server, and it's partly working, but I'm getting some serious errors using Thunderbird and IMAP. Now, I had expected the proxying to be fairly transparent and basically just dovecot doing an auth and then passing the stream on to the other server? My problem is that using Thunderbird I can read all my folders OK, but I can't save anything in my Sent Items or Drafts folders... Basically I get errors every time I try and send an email, or try to save to the draft folder. Curiously, directly browsing into those folders works fine, as does deleting emails, and apparently copying them works fine also... Why is the saving of sent messages failing...? The setup is basically taking a working Thunderbird install, changing the server name from pointing at the Courier server to point at the dovecot server - dovecot in turn is told to proxy back to the original server. All I'm getting from Thunderbird is an "Invalid Command" response. Is there an easy way to get a look inside the imap stream to try and see what's failing? Any suggestions on why this is happening at all? One idea is that I have setup completely different namespaces in Dovecot, (with a hidden namespace which should be courier compatible), but I wouldn't have expected this to affect the Proxy stuff at all?! [Dovecot] auth_default_realm for different listeners

We provide POP3 service for several realms, each of which has a substantial number of users logging in with no realm (bare username). We would like to use Dovecot, but I haven't been able to findout how to vary auth_default_realm for each listener. My most recent attempt was to set up one auth {} block for each realm with a different auth_default_realm and socket master path. I then set up one protocol pop3 {} block for each realm, listening on different IP addresses and with a auth_socket_path corresponding to the auth block for that listener. I'm not sure if I'm on the right track here, but I'm seeing two problems: 1. [Dovecot] namespace prefix issue with avelsieve

Hi! I am currently testing a setup with dovecot's lda, the cmusieve plugin, pysieved and the avelsieve plugin for squirrelmail. The issue I am stumbling upon is that avelsieve is generating folder names including the namespace prefix when creating "fileinto" rules. E.g.: A rule: If the header "Precedence" contains "bulk", then file it into the folder INBOX.bulk. Also keep a copy in INBOX, marked as deleted. translates into sieve: require ["fileinto","reject","vacation","imapflags","relational","comparator-i;ascii-numeric","regex","notify"]; if header :contains "Precedence" "bulk" { fileinto "INBOX.bulk"; addflag "\\Deleted"; keep; } But what happens when a matching email is delivered is that a new mailbox ".INBOX.bulk" in the user's Maildir is created. I.e. the email is not delivered to ~/.Maildir/.bulk as intended, but into ~/.Maildir/.INBOX.bulk, creating the new folder on the fly. The same happens when trying to fileinto folders from other namespaces. It seems that either avelsieve is generating "too much" and should remove the prefix (at least for INBOX) or dovecot's deliver is not able to use the namespaces definition in dovecot.conf correctly when interpreting sieve's fileinto directive. Did I miss something? hi all, after i successed in install / configure dovecot, and transform mbox to maildir i got error in outlook expres. outlook expres is authenticated . dovecot accep user/passwd. when i try to receive folder list is giving me error: "downloading folder from server.ro" "one or more problems occurred downloading your list of folders from your account. The folder list may be inaccurate." any ideea? thanks.

[Dovecot] gssapi, kerberos and webmail

Hi every one, first thanks for the great job, I switched successfully from courier imap a few months ago and both the migration and maintenance went smoothly from then on. The reason I switched was gssapi support (and the easier debug) and now I have thunderbird on Linux connecting in an SSO fashion through kerberos/GSSAPI (works great). Users should be able to access their mail throught a webmail too (eg. eGroupware). I have already checked for kerberos authentication on Apache, however there seems to be no way to have ticket forwarding throught PHP. AFIAK there is thus no way to use kerberos for php-imap --> dovecot authentication. The only information available seems to be the username. So here is my question : how do people on this mailing list handle kerberos authentication with webmail? Do you use other kind of authentication on privileged port (ie with access only from apache) and just do a login/nopassword authentication (like an uid base authentication through ldapi:/// on an ldap directory for example) ? Hello, I am trying to move from Courier-imap to dovecot.... Even if the processes to move logical (eg name spaces etc...) went very and without any problem, I've some etrange behavior when Imap client is Mac OS X Mail.app. I've got a big mailbox that have about 3 / 4G of mail in several folder (lots !!!)... After a long time, the OS X client say error : "Too Many opened files". I have check on the servers (a FreeBSD farm of 3 servers using freebsd ports of dovecot)... And nothing special... A question : why do I have never this kind of message on courier imap and why do I get this on dovecot... ? Configuration file on demand... if needed... THanks, /Xavier

I have dovecot 1.0.5 installed on an OpenBSD 4.1 box and an OS X Server 10.4.10 box. Sure you've all heard it before, because of the pipe error, no more login processes can be launched, and I have to restart the server. dovecot: Sep 13 05:50:00 Error: pipe() failed: Too many open files I first thought this was the issue with kqueue, but I've since recompiled making sure to use poll. This also happened with 1.0.3 and 1.0.2. It also happens very specifically after a dictionary attack that lasts usually about an hour, unless I can catch it earlier. (Around 18,000 login attempts) ex: dovecot: Sep 13 05:49:58 Info: pop3-login: Aborted login: user=<aaron>, method=PLAIN, rip=62.161.41.32, lip=<local ip> dovecot: Sep 13 05:49:58 Info: pop3-login: Aborted login: user=<adm>, method=PLAIN, rip=62.161.41.32, lip=<local ip> dovecot: Sep 13 05:49:58 Info: pop3-login: Aborted login: user=<account>, method=PLAIN, rip=62.161.41.32, lip=<local ip> But after the attack has subsided for a period of time, I still have the number of file descriptors maxed out for the dovecot process. I've increased the number available to have a higher roof, but that doesn't fix the problem. Wondering if anyone else has seen this issue, and also in a generic problem. How are others dealing the the problem of being attacked in this method? Is there a max number of login tries for a given ip address within a period of time that I'm missing? :) Thanks, Patrick

[Dovecot] dirsize quota assertion problem

Our current virtual mailbox configuration is not compatible with one of the assertions in the dovecot quota plugin's assertions in quota-dirsize.c. I believe the assertion is incorrect, but I would also be happy if I could get the same result with a better configuration setting. Here is a sample passdb entry which causes the quota assertion to fail: test(a)example.com:<snip>:3007:1000::/usr/boxes/username/example.com::userdb_mail=mbox:~/test^/.imap:INBOX=~/test userdb_uid=3007 userdb_gid=1000 userdb_home=/usr/boxes/username/example.com userdb_quota=dirsize:storage=100 The imap folder is "~/test^/.imap" and the INBOX is "~/test". As you can see, these are in different locations, but the INBOX string happens to be a substring of the imap folder directory. An example of the failed assertion error: Aug 31 16:44:13 www2 dovecot: IMAP(test(a)example.com): file quota-dirsize.c: line 180 (quota_count_path_add): assertion failed: (!is_file) This particular error log line was generated by dovecot 1.0.3, but the code in quota-dirsize.c is the same in dovecot 1.1 alpha3's version of quota-dirsize.c: 131 if (strncmp(count_path[i].path, path, strlen(path)) == 0) { 132 /* the new path contains the existing path */ 133 i_assert(!is_file); 134 count_path += i; 135 break; 136 } First, quota_count_path_add() is called for directory "~/test^/.imap" and it succeeds. When it is subsequently called for file "~/test": - the strncmp matches because "~/test" is a substring of "~/test^/.imap" - the assertion fails because "~/test" is a file and not a directory It seems to me that instead of asserting !is_file, it would be better to simply skip the conditional in that case, since a path variable that is a file should never be tested to see whether it contains an existing path. if (!is_file && strncmp(count_path[i].path, path, strlen(path)) == 0) { /* the new path contains the existing path */ count_path += i; break; } But this also has a bug: if path is a directory which substring matches count_path[i].path, but the same path with a directory separator appended to it does not substring match count_path[i].path, then it is a different path and does not contain the existing path. For example, if count_path[i] is the directory /usr/home/test/mailbox_folders, and path is the directory /usr/home/test/mailbox, then /usr/home/test/mailbox does not contain/usr/home/test/mailbox_folders, and this condition should fail. If some other code were to enforce that /usr/home/test/mailbox be terminated with a directory separator, then this is not a problem and my patch should work. I hope this makes sense. Hi, I'm running FreeBSD, Dovecot, Postfix (virtual users), MySQL, Squirrelmail. I have installed squirrelmail-quota_usage-plugin, but I cannot make it work. It mentions "If you have an IMAP server with QUOTA Extension capability...". In dovecot.conf I have enabled "mail_plugins = quota" near protocol pop3 and protocol lda, near protocol imap I have "mail_plugins = quota imap_quota". Near " plugin { ..." I have "quota = maildir:storage=204800". I think that the problem of why I don't see quota in Squirrelmail is in file dovecot-sql near user_query. I have my users mailboxes in such format: /usr/local/virtual/domain.tld/username and my user_query looks like this: user_query = SELECT maildir, 125 AS uid, 125 AS gid, concat('maildir:storage=', quota) AS quota FROM mailbox WHERE username = '%u' AND active = '1', I think that in my user_query I'm missing something. I do not get any errors in the dovecot and dovecot-debug logs, everything works fine, but I still can't see quota.

Dovecot v1.1.alpha4 imap after some time stops responding. It can not be restarted as /etc/init.d/dovecot restart killall imap also does not help killall -9 imap and then restart does help in log I see message (repeted periodically) that Sep 12 09:50:02 localhost postfix/local[22533]: C7057753B6: to=<username@domain> , relay=local, delay=5195, delays=5156/0.01/0/39, dsn=4.2.0, status=deferr ed (cannot update mailbox /home/username/Mailbox for user username. unable to lo ck for exclusive access: Resource temporarily unavailable) lsof -n shows that the file is is open by imap process.

[Dovecot] Datehandling bug?

Hi, I am testing dovecot 1.0.3 alongside my existing courier installation and a number of my emails are heading to the top of the inbox even though they are rather old. Closer inspection shows that my mailclient (Thunderbird on Win32) is showing me some screwey dates for a number of messages. One example is an email which says: Date: 2007-08-21 11:42:43 But in TB I see the date shown as only: 03:27 ie just a time and no date OK, the date above is clearly not an RFC date, but any idea why this is showing up only under Dovecot? Is it a dovecot date handling issue? Cheers Ed W

Hi I have problems with deliver? I can not make it work with mysql. I mean I can write over the space declared on mysql. does any have a way of setting up deliver to read quota from mysql??? Thanks

Hello, I'm using dovecot-1.0.5 with postfix. I have to use deliver from procmail because I have some filters. There is no document about how to using deliver parameters (-d) other than http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA . If I set -d parameters manually as a username everything is ok. I can not set users' mail quota (don't lookup) with mysql db if I haven't set -d parameter as receipt username in procmail. How can I describe user (-d) parameter's variable in procmail? Hi All, I'm new to dovecot (coming from cyrus) and have a bit of a problem setting up postfix + dspam + dovecot. 1. postfix + dovecot: works like a charm. Using "mailbox_command = /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver" in postfix main.cf 2. adding dspam to the equation: unable to deliver: net_connect(/usr/var/run/dovecot/auth-master) failed: No such file or directory Using "mailbox_transport = lmtp:unix:/var/tmp/dspam.sock" in postfix main.cf (instead of the above mailbox_command), and the corresponding setting in master.cf. In /etc/dspam.conf I'm using... When Thunderbird copies mails from the same mail account into the folder, it seems like it tries to select the mail box afterwards, then a "Internal error occured. Refer to server log for more information." because of permission denied. When one copies mail from yet another account into the SPAM box, no such message appears. I guess, Thunderbird does not try the refresh the message count. Well, is there a possiblity to setup a Write-Only mailbox, with Dovecot v1.0.3 with the ACL plugin? Is there a working setup for write-only mailboxes with the ACL plugin? Is this the best way to get dovecot's pop3 process to run under xinetd? This is what I did after I installed postfix and dovecot. I am using Debian. I have a weird issue where several users are recieving the same email's multiple times. Each email has a different que id, but are exactly the same otherwise. I thought at first this was a new spam, but I have local users doing the same thing. Im not sure where to start looking for the root of this problem. Seems to be pretty widespread across multiple platforms. I currently utilize openldap for user database, sendmail, Dovecot-Imap, and horde webmail. Im not sure where to start digging for this problem, Ive scanned through all my log files and havent found anything. Today, i lost connection with the mail server. I think that there are some problem with the index file and it's log file. Following is the log for losing connection. I am getting random disconnects from my imap session, dificulties to revconnect, very sluggish behaviour when changing between mail folders also frequent and rapidly repititive messages on te client "mailserver x.x.x.x is not a imap4 server" I am running dovecot 1.0.rc2 from ports on OpenBSD 4.0 on a PIII, 500MHz 512MB My set up is very small - a webserver with a single imap account on it for myself and my wife and a pop3 account for a printserver. The clients are both Thunderbird on Linux (Ubuntu7.04 and Ubuntu 6.06 I have overall maybe 6000 mails distributed over all folders. Hi Is it legal/sensible to use the following in the conf file # default namespace namespace private { separator = / prefix = inbox = yes } # for backwards compatibility: namespace private { separator = . prefix = INBOX. inbox = yes hidden = yes } The goal would be to migrate away from an Courier server, whilst still supporting clients using their old settings, but going forward they can use the new settings? In particular I always noticed that OE would not set the namespace automatically, so being able to leave it blank would be an advantage (fewer config issues for customers) Grateful if someone could confirm this works ok? Compatibility issues with Thunderbird/OE/Outlook 2003+ in particular? Cheers Ed W

Hi, We are using dovecot version 1.0.3. We have dovecot-ldap configured to authenticate users using ldap database. We are facing the inactivity problem with dovecot. After some hrs of successful working, dovecot logs shows the connection inactive problem with pop3 & imap server, & it starts rejecting the connection requests from clients. The problem goes away once we restart dovecot. The problem occurs again & again after some random time. Please help us in solving this problem. [Dovecot] shared mailbox subfolder permissions

Hi all, when I create a subfolder in a public mailbox the dovecot-shared file is copied for the newly created subfolder and all mails get the owner, group and permissions from the file. Unfortunately the cur, new and tmp folders only get the permissions from the file but owner and group are set according to the creator. This effectivly makes the folder private to the creator. Is this the intended behavior? Is it a bug that has already been fixed in a later version? I am using 1.0.rc29. An example follows. Thanks for your help! [Dovecot] SSL connections frozen on Dovecot 1.0.0

Hello, We are running Dovecot 1.0.0 (Debian Etch, Backports.org, OpenSSL) in a production environment and we experience sporadic SSL connection problems. At the moment, it's difficult to tell if the server goes back to normal operation after some time or if it can be reproduces at any time because we have to restart it as soon as we get Nagios alerts. Some tests with openssl s_client have shown difficulties to proceed the SSL handshake (hanging at different stages), or no response to IMAP commands. SSL client used: openssl s_client -host imap -port 993 - First case : s_client hangs on the first output "CONNECTED(00000003)" and there is no handshake at all; - Second case : like the first but the handshake starts after a few minutes; - Third case : the handshake goes fine but the "OK" server banner is never sent (no response to commands); - Fourth case : the greeting banner is received but dovecot will never answer. The configuration file is almost identical to the default and SSL certificate is not the autogenerated one. Log files do not show dying process. I've searched the ML archive for SSL issues but not found related bug. Does anyone use the Backport.org package of Dovecot ? I'm trying to replace procmail with deliver but I'm having problems with the group part of things. I keep getting: Aug 29 16:44:19 dingbat deliver(mimo): open(/var/mail/.temp.dingbat.3969.d1689935a308e0dd) failed: Permission denied Aug 29 16:44:19 dingbat deliver(mimo): file_lock_dotlock() failed with mbox file /var/mail/mimo: Permission denied My primary group is mimo and I think it's trying to use that. I changed it to mail and things work. But I do not want all my users to have a primary group mail. Is there a way I can force deliver to use group mail as group and ignore the per user gid? I tried chmod 6755 /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver but no change. This is on debian/etch, help appreciated.... mimo

Hi folks, My institute's mail server was upgraded to RHEL5 with dovecot 1.0-2.1rc5 recently. And it uses PAM authentication which points to LDAP server. Actually I managed to fix this setting global_script_path = /usr/local/etc/sieve/Junk instead of sieve_global_dir = The emails marked as spam were moved to correct directory which is Junk, as listed in user's subscriptions file and not INBOX.Junk.
