Timo, My setup: Solaris 9, 1.0rc1, built like so: CC=gcc CFLAGS="-g -O" CPPFLAGS=-I/opt/openssl/include \ LDFLAGS=-L/opt/openssl/lib ./configure --prefix=/opt/dovecot.1.0rc1 \ --with-ssl=openssl --with-ssldir=/opt/openssl/ssl \ --with-sql-drivers=no --disable-ipv6 using gcc 4.1.0. Protocols are imap and imaps. My system paniced and crashed in the middle of the night, and after it came up the ssl-parameters.dat file was messed up. >From syslog: child 1965 (login) returned error 89 imap-login: Can't open SSL parameter file ssl-parameters.dat: Permission denied Nobody was getting their email via imap. So I removed the directories /opt/dovecot/var and /var/run/dovecot to get dovecot to rebuild the ssl-parameters.dat file. Questions: 1) Why on Earth does ssl-build-param take so long??!! (> 12 minutes on my E220R) What is it doing? How to speed this process up, and/or tune it? 2) Where does ssl-parameters.dat get written to? I found one copy in the /opt/dovecot/var/lib/dovecot directory, and one copy in /var/run/dovecot/login. Which copy gets used? 3) What are the permissions supposed to be for ssl-parameters.dat? The copy in /var/run was chown root:other and chmod 640. I could not get rid of the syslog "permission denied" until I made it chmod 644. 4) Likewise the directories /opt/dovecot/var and below get created chown root:other and chmod 750, with ssl-parameters.dat chmod 640. [Dovecot] writing a plugin for LDA to chain Unix pipes

Hi, I've spent some part of the last week on trying to figure out whether dovecot LDA meets our requirements for a new mail server infrastructure (the IMAP and POP servers, as well as the SASL backend certainly do; thanks a lot!). The one thing that's holding me back is that we need per-user integration of SpamAssassin and some other, custom content filters, all of which are implemented as Unix pipe filters. My conclusion is that since dovecot LDA cannot yet integrate such filters in the delivery chain, but it supports plugins, that such a plugin must be written. Conceptually, it's very simple: a configuration file option specifying the Unix pipe, and a plugin that does the proper popen() (or whatever is to be used these days) call, checking for errors and doing the right thing. Unfortunately, I do not have much time at my hands -- basically it all boils down to Sunday evening and a little bit of Monday, and then it's got to be done. My C is rusty, but I do have a lot of experience with it, so I am confident... ... but what would really help is if someone who knows the internals of Dovecot would give me a starting point, or even some more information. How do I conceive to write such a plugin? I could not find the information online, and I'd rather not reverse engineer existing plugins, for that approach usually leads to ugly and hence unstable/insecure/unusable code. Any feedback is thus warmly appreciated! Also, if someone is online on IRC on Sunday and Monday and wouldn't mind if I asked a question now and then, please let me know. It goes without saying that I will happily submit my plugin (once its tested) to Dovecot upstream under the Artistic Licence, or if that doesn't work, another licence of your choosing. [Dovecot] SSL proxy rewrite

Last time I committed my SSL proxy rewrite people complained that it got broken. Now that I'm finally trying to fix it, it seems to work perfectly with me. Both downloading lots of messages and saving lots of messages works fine. I added SSL alerts and something else to be logged now with verbose_ssl=yes. With that enabled, could you people try if the rewritten code works with you, and if not, what do the logs say? Since I put this installation in an FreeBSD geli encrypted disc image I had no choice but to choose an imapd with clever indexes - dovecot was perfect. However, since I reconfigured the disc image to work as a FreeBSD jail, I had some trouble with my web mail solution. Squirrelmail does not work with imaps (or at least not smoothly, out of the box, or whatever) and I didn't like to hack php to support SSL. Plus: there is no point in using ssl for a local connection. In a FreeBSD jail a sockets source address is always rewritten to the jails address, so squirrelmail opening a connection to dovecot will not come from 127.0.0.1 but from the same (jails) address, dovecot listens to. Still, dovecot only considers 'localhost' addresses as secure and allows LOGIN or PLAIN auth. With the little patch below dovecot allows clients from the jail to authenticate via LOGIN, when they connect from the IP it accepts connections at. Something similar is lurking around in pop3 auth code, I am sure, you get the point. [Dovecot] Just one user experiencing server timeouts

[dovecot-1.0-0.beta2.7 on Fedora Core 5, maildir formatted mail directories, various clients: thunderbird 1.5.0.4 from FC4 and WinXP, SquirrelMail 1.4.6-5.fc5 RPM, various recent versions of Pine from various Fedoras and Redhat 9] I have just one mail user who experiences server timeouts when trying to delete a message (move it to Trash) or other common operations. This user has 4.1GB of mail spread over 200+ Maildir-formatted folders, so I immediately expected sheer volume as the problem - this user has by far the most mail. This user experiences the problem from multiple Thunderbird installs, from SquirrelMail, and from Pine. However, I created a new user account using our standard account creation processes, and did a direct copy of olduser's Maildir to newuser's homedir. Then I did a chown -R newuser ~newuser/Maildir, set up an account in Thunderbird for newuser's account, and tried for an hour to get a server timeout doing all the same operations that cause the timeout on olduser's account, with no timeouts. I absolutely cannot duplicate the behavior, but when I watch olduser do this from any of the above named clients, I see the timeouts on about 10% of the operations. I've been looking into this off and on for weeks, but I am baffled. I can't think of what is so specific about this one user's account that is causing the trip up. Both home directories are stored on the same filesystem and as I mentioned I made an exact duplicate of Maildir. I'm completely out of ideas, does anyone have any thoughts? Does Dovecot do any data tracking on a per user basis that could be confusing it, some cache I can clear? We are using dovecot-0.99.13-3.FC3; the users use IMAP. I have had several of these today where the user cannot write to their Sent folder on the server. Hello, I'm using dovecot as my IMAP server just for me, and I access it from three machines, all using Apple Mail.app. Unfortunately the performance is really bad, especially when deleting or copying a lot of messages. I know this is the fault of Mail.app, whose IMAP support leaves a lot to desire, but I was wondering if there could be some dovecot configuration tricks that make the interaction smoother. I think I've found a bug in Dovecot 1.0 rc1 where if you have namespaces without the "location = " setting defined, it fails to use default_mail_env as it should. Hello, how can I configure the IMAP quota plugin to force quotas on inbox only? I would like to limit the size of each of the user's inbox (in /var/mail/%u) to 50 meg and I do not want to force any quotas in their folders (mbox style). They should keep their inbox small :) thanks, Kristian

Hi everybody, I have been long (for 2 days) trying, but I really need some help. I would like to use virtual static users. I configured my file as indicated in the documentation and then I created the following directory, with the needed rights (mail account) and leave them empty : /var/mail/virtual/<mon_domaine>.fr/toto/ I am not sure that it is the good method, but I understand it as follows : dovecot looks up in the directories and takes them as usernames and domain names. Since I put this installation in an FreeBSD geli encrypted disc image I had no choice but to choose an imapd with clever indexes - dovecot was perfect. However, since I reconfigured the disc image to work as a FreeBSD jail, I had some trouble with my web mail solution. Squirrelmail does not work with imaps (or at least not smoothly, out of the box, or whatever) and I didn't like to hack php to support SSL. Plus: there is no point in using ssl for a local connection. In a FreeBSD jail a sockets source address is always rewritten to the jails address, so squirrelmail opening a connection to dovecot will not come from 127.0.0.1 but from the same (jails) address, dovecot listens to. Still, dovecot only considers 'localhost' addresses as secure and allows LOGIN or PLAIN auth. With the little patch below dovecot allows clients from the jail to authenticate via LOGIN, when they connect from the IP it accepts connections at. Something similar is lurking around in pop3 auth code, I am sure, you get the point. Hi, I am trying to deploy dovecot LDA and liking it so far. However, I need to pass the message through some filters before it's delivered to the user (e.g. spamc). I realise I can just set up a chain (postfix delivers to spamc, pipes to foo, pipes to bar, pipes to deliver), but there's no reliable error handling with that approach. Furthermore, I cannot seem to figure out whether sieve can pass messages through external filters, or how you'd do that. How do people approach this? What would be really sweet is an LDA plugin that can call arbitrary filters for each message it processes. Has something (obvious) like this been done? I'm seeking a small IMAP server, and dovecat was recommended by those more savvy than me. (The sign on my monitor is "My programming language is solder..") so I'll be getting help to deploy this, but first... I've read through the wiki docs but still have questions, ones likely too obvious for most readers.... There will be <100 users, the platform will Debian, and I need IMAP/PO over SSL/TSL and locally-hosted Squirrelmail [unless someone has a better webmail client...]. Other boxes here run postfix, so that is a first choice. Clients will be Eudora, maybe TBird/Apple mail; no M$ Outlook. A) I need multi-domain support, with <joe(a)xyz.com> and <joy(a)qbc.net> being separate users. B) I have a problem with storage-abusers & really want the carrot-stick quota system my favorite ISP, Panix, has. You get N bytes {or messages, I can live with either/both} and when you get near, you get nagged until you solve it. When you exceed quota, you get no more incoming mail, just nagging. It's shunted aside until you make room. After D days, if it's still there, the shunted mail is returned. Regular reports as to who's naughty and nice would be great. C) Password changes. How can I have user-changable pw's, with crack/sanity checking of the new ones? Do I have to have accessible shell accounts on the box for each user? [argh] D) Spam: assume I can run spam-assassin and have it move suspected mail into a Junque mailbox; true? E) Non-guru creation/deletion of accounts: It appears from "Virtual Users" that this is possible via a text file, but I'm not sure... Comments?

Hello, some time ago there was dicussion on the list about development of a managesieve daemon to allow users to manage their own scripts. After putting the pieces togheter and having sieve working in the lda with Dovecot I solved the management issue by using Horde's Ingo + FTP to manage scripts for virtual users. This is quite ugly (technically speaking) but works and it is integrated with my webmail system (which is quite nice). Is anyone actively working on this? Which client do support managesieve? Luca

Hello All, Upgraded a test machine this morning from beta9 to rc1 and lost access to messages and folders. an strace on the imap process shows it accessing the home directory, but not the mail directory. The two queries that I use are: password_query = SELECT email,crypt as password FROM users WHERE email = '%u' user_query = SELECT homedir AS home, maildir AS mail, 1000 AS uid, 1000 AS gid FROM users WHERE email = '%u' In this example, homedir=/var/spool/mail/filer/storage and maildir=cfu.net/b/r/breu Under beta9, it finds the homedir/maildir correctly as /var/spool/mail/filer/storage/cfu.net/b/r/breu. Hi, I am using the Debian dovecot packages and the deliver LDA from postfix, all version 1.0.beta8. My problem is with quota support, I am using Maildirs. The relevant configuration stuff is included at the bottom of this email. Quota support seems to work with IMAP. However, even when IMAP complains about an account being over quota, the deliver LDA still happily writes new mail to the (correct) Maildirs. I cannot see any warnings or other hints. Can you spot what I am doing wrong? Dovecot will soon have a plugin which allows running a nightly cronjob to expunge mails from configured mailboxes which have been in there for a configurable amount of time. For example the configuration could be: plugin { # Trash 7d, Spam 30d expire = Trash 7 Spam 30 } It also supports using Dovecot's lib-dict to keep track of the mailboxes and their oldest mail's timestamp, so that the nightly cronjob can quickly go through only those mailboxes that have those old mails. Berkeley DB support has been added to lib-dict for this purpose, but you could use SQL as well. There's however one problem with it that I could use opinions on. Currently there's no way to know how long a mail has been in a mailbox. There are pretty much 3 ways to handle this: 1) When copying to those Trash/Spam mailboxes the message's INTERNALDATE could be replaced with the current time. That way the INTERNALDATE tells how long the message has been in there. The obvious downside of this is that if the user wants to move the message back to another mailbox, the original INTERNALDATE is lost (INTERNALDATE means the time when the message was received and is often the timestamp used to sort messages). 2) Preserve the INTERNALDATE while copying, but still use it anyway. Often the messages are moved to Trash (and especially to Spam) soon after they have been received. If not, then the user has time until the next nightly cronjob to move the messages back before they're lost. 3) Add a new field to index file which contains the date when the message was copied. This could be done only for those Trash/Spam boxes so they don't waste space for other mailboxes. The problem with this is that it won't work if there are no index files. To overcome that problem the time could be stored in yet another place, such as maildir filename and some new mbox header. I don't see supporting those as worth the trouble though, so the fallback could be either the date index file is created or the messages' INTERNALDATE. I think either 1) or 3) would be best solutions. 3) probably, but if index files don't exist nearly permanently, it's not very reliable..

[Dovecot] Postfix "userlookup" via Dovecot Auth

I'm hoping to take advantage of authentication caching via dovecot-auth. I see that posfix can communicate with Dovecot-Auth, via SASL, but from what I can see, postfix only does this for authentication checks. Not 100% sure how postfix handles virtual_transport (I assume it needs to do a lookup via virtual_mailbox_maps), but I can't see anyway to get virtual_mailbox_maps to use dovecot-auth ether. I guess I may just have to get the virtual_mailbox_maps to look up userdata via SQL as well as Dovecot, but I was hoping to avoid what will be 3 similar lookups one after the other (dovecot-lda is in use as well). My intended setup is "Postfix" -- LMTP --> "Dspam" -- DeliveryAgent --> "Dovecot-LDA", with each stage currently doing a SQL lookup for user information. It would be awesome if they all used SASl via Dovecot-Auth so that the Auth cache does it's job! Reading the doc files in Dspam is confusing me, as the relay file seems to be mixed up. [Dovecot] Periodic cleanup of Trash

Hi dovecot developers, Is there any plan to have a plugin which deletes old messages from certain folders at login time? I am thinking along the lines of the automatic removal of old messages from say, the Trash folder. This functionality exists in courier-imap and cyrus imap, and would be very handy to have in dovecot too. -- Anand

[Dovecot] POP3 quota trouble

Hi all, I'm running Dovecot 1.0 beta8 on CentOS 4.3. In the "protocol imap { }" section, I have enabled the following 2 plugins: imap_quota quota In the "plugin { }" section, I have configured the following: quota = maildir imap_quota = maildir This all works well, and if I use IMAP, Dovecot correctly updates the maildirsize file in user Maildirs. However, I need quota to work for POP3 as well. If I enable the quota plugin in the "protocol pop3 { }" section, I get the following error in the log: dlopen(/usr/lib/dovecot/pop3/lib01_quota_plugin.so) failed: /usr/lib/dovecot/pop3/lib01_quota_plugin.so: undefined symbol: mountpoint_get Along with this error, POP3 logins are not possible. The server crashes, and client connection is closed. Is there a fix for this problem? Regards, -- Anand

The error is that you have glibc-2.4 which triggers inotify support in dovecot on linux boxes (in the Gentoo ebuild). However, glibc-2.4 needs to be compiled against linux-headers-2.6.13 or later as they provide the linux/inotify.h header which glibc needs. I've spoken to our toolchain guys and they don't want to remove glibc's inotify.h so they keep their ABI which makes perfect sense to them. So I've hacked up a patch to dovecots configure.in that only enables inotify if it really works :) It also tests for inotify, then kqueue, then dnotify if no notify method is specified. Seems to work well. If upstream (Timo) accepts it then I'll roll it into beta9's ebuild ASAP A better solution would be to have something in the code though as if the kernel suddenly drops to <2.6.13 then you'll get the same errors. In the meantime, I've forced the beta9 ebuild to only use inotify if >=glibc-2.4 and >=linux-headers-2.6.16 are present, and I hope glibc has been compiled against them - lol. [Dovecot] pop-3 login delay

We are running Dovecot 1.0.beta9 w/ mysql authentication. Mail storage is a Network Appliance F810 filer and we are using maildir. The only issue that we have run into is that pop3 logins take much longer than imap logins within dovecott and many times longer than a similar connection with courier-imap. For example, dovecot IMAP and courier-imap POP3 and IMAP logins take less than 1/2 second to complete the login. dovecot POP3 takes 2-3 seconds. I have disabled MMAP and am using fcntl. [Dovecot] 1.0 RC1 status #2

I've done several fixes since my original RC1 status mail. Most importantly I noticed that SEARCH command has been somewhat broken for a long time if the search condition contained OR or NOT conditions. Then again fixing that caused Dovecot to assert-crash for some searches. That should be fixed now. Hopefully I didn't break the SEARCH in other ways while doing this.. So, again, please test the latest CVS or the latest nightly snapshot from http://dovecot.org/nightly/ Especially I'm interested in: - Does SEARCH work correctly? - Does ioloop checks now work properly? There were mails about it being broken with kqueue and epoll. - Does mboxes with CR+LF linefeeds work correctly? I'm hoping to release the 1.0 RC1 late in sunday or in monday morning (EEST). Then a status update of my life in case you're interested: I got in pretty much everywhere I applied for: CS and biotech in Helsinki university and biotech in Tampere university. For Helsinki's biochem I'm the first in the waiting list, which means I almost certainly would get in there too. So, unless something suddenly changes my mind, I'm moving to Tampere in two months.
