[Dovecot] Postfix "userlookup" via Dovecot Auth

I'm hoping to take advantage of authentication caching via dovecot-auth. I see that posfix can communicate with Dovecot-Auth, via SASL, but from what I can see, postfix only does this for authentication checks. Not 100% sure how postfix handles virtual_transport (I assume it needs to do a lookup via virtual_mailbox_maps), but I can't see anyway to get virtual_mailbox_maps to use dovecot-auth ether. I guess I may just have to get the virtual_mailbox_maps to look up userdata via SQL as well as Dovecot, but I was hoping to avoid what will be 3 similar lookups one after the other (dovecot-lda is in use as well). My intended setup is "Postfix" -- LMTP --> "Dspam" -- DeliveryAgent --> "Dovecot-LDA", with each stage currently doing a SQL lookup for user information. It would be awesome if they all used SASl via Dovecot-Auth so that the Auth cache does it's job! Reading the doc files in Dspam is confusing me, as the relay file seems to be mixed up. [Dovecot] Periodic cleanup of Trash

Hi dovecot developers, Is there any plan to have a plugin which deletes old messages from certain folders at login time? I am thinking along the lines of the automatic removal of old messages from say, the Trash folder. This functionality exists in courier-imap and cyrus imap, and would be very handy to have in dovecot too. -- Anand

[Dovecot] POP3 quota trouble

Hi all, I'm running Dovecot 1.0 beta8 on CentOS 4.3. In the "protocol imap { }" section, I have enabled the following 2 plugins: imap_quota quota In the "plugin { }" section, I have configured the following: quota = maildir imap_quota = maildir This all works well, and if I use IMAP, Dovecot correctly updates the maildirsize file in user Maildirs. However, I need quota to work for POP3 as well. If I enable the quota plugin in the "protocol pop3 { }" section, I get the following error in the log: dlopen(/usr/lib/dovecot/pop3/lib01_quota_plugin.so) failed: /usr/lib/dovecot/pop3/lib01_quota_plugin.so: undefined symbol: mountpoint_get Along with this error, POP3 logins are not possible. The server crashes, and client connection is closed. Is there a fix for this problem? Regards, -- Anand

The error is that you have glibc-2.4 which triggers inotify support in dovecot on linux boxes (in the Gentoo ebuild). However, glibc-2.4 needs to be compiled against linux-headers-2.6.13 or later as they provide the linux/inotify.h header which glibc needs. I've spoken to our toolchain guys and they don't want to remove glibc's inotify.h so they keep their ABI which makes perfect sense to them. So I've hacked up a patch to dovecots configure.in that only enables inotify if it really works :) It also tests for inotify, then kqueue, then dnotify if no notify method is specified. Seems to work well. If upstream (Timo) accepts it then I'll roll it into beta9's ebuild ASAP A better solution would be to have something in the code though as if the kernel suddenly drops to <2.6.13 then you'll get the same errors. In the meantime, I've forced the beta9 ebuild to only use inotify if >=glibc-2.4 and >=linux-headers-2.6.16 are present, and I hope glibc has been compiled against them - lol. [Dovecot] pop-3 login delay

We are running Dovecot 1.0.beta9 w/ mysql authentication. Mail storage is a Network Appliance F810 filer and we are using maildir. The only issue that we have run into is that pop3 logins take much longer than imap logins within dovecott and many times longer than a similar connection with courier-imap. For example, dovecot IMAP and courier-imap POP3 and IMAP logins take less than 1/2 second to complete the login. dovecot POP3 takes 2-3 seconds. I have disabled MMAP and am using fcntl. [Dovecot] 1.0 RC1 status #2

I've done several fixes since my original RC1 status mail. Most importantly I noticed that SEARCH command has been somewhat broken for a long time if the search condition contained OR or NOT conditions. Then again fixing that caused Dovecot to assert-crash for some searches. That should be fixed now. Hopefully I didn't break the SEARCH in other ways while doing this.. So, again, please test the latest CVS or the latest nightly snapshot from http://dovecot.org/nightly/ Especially I'm interested in: - Does SEARCH work correctly? - Does ioloop checks now work properly? There were mails about it being broken with kqueue and epoll. - Does mboxes with CR+LF linefeeds work correctly? I'm hoping to release the 1.0 RC1 late in sunday or in monday morning (EEST). Then a status update of my life in case you're interested: I got in pretty much everywhere I applied for: CS and biotech in Helsinki university and biotech in Tampere university. For Helsinki's biochem I'm the first in the waiting list, which means I almost certainly would get in there too. So, unless something suddenly changes my mind, I'm moving to Tampere in two months. [Dovecot] Asterisks (*) in Folder Names disallowed?

As far as I can see the RFC for IMAP should allow the * character in the folder name. This is certainly allowed in UW IMAP. Dovecot seems to object however with: ERROR : Could not complete request. Query: COPY 9975:9975 "mail/*myfolder" Reason Given: Invalid mailbox name. Could this restriction be lifted? Best wishes, Daniel

Hi, I'm trying to compile dovecot with dovecot-sieve, both from CVS. There is file dovecot-config.in.in in current dovecot module, which produce dovecot-config.in after ./configure'ing. But dovecot-sieve requires file dovecot-config to be in dovecot's directory. I think it is just typo, because after renaming dovecot-config.in to dovecot-config the building succeeded. -- Sergey Ivanov

Hi, After using dovecot 0.99.14 on a production server with full satisfaction, I'm now giving a try to 1.0beta8 (I know beta9 is out, but it's not yet available within Debian). The new features are great. Maildir++ quotas seem to work fine, and shared folders look promising (despite a few issues). My problem is that I could not fire out how to set quotas on shared folders. Hello! I have very strange problem with dovecot and thunderbird while deleting messages. The problem is that they are not actually deleted from storage filesystem and if I later run mutt I can perfectly see them, though marked with 'D', so mutt ask to delete them on exit and this time they dissapear from filesystem. I enabled in thunderbird 'remove it iimediately' feature, but this doesn't help. When I delete message from mutt it removed from filesystem just fine. IMAP server: OS: FreeBSD 6.1p2 dovecot: dovecot-1.0.b9 Client: OS: Debian sarge Thunderbird: thunderbird 1.5.0.4 (from backports.org) Any suggestions ?

When I do a search in squirrelmail, it will start giving several results, but then fails. [Dovecot] Dovecot with Imp problems

Hi guys, I've run into a strange problem using beta 8 and beta 9 when using the latest version of Horde/IMP Through IMP, I can see that there are messages in the maildir on the sidemenu(popup menu) but the emails don't show in my actual inbox. I thought this was an IMP problem, but then I downgraded to dovecot 99 series RPM and this resolved the problem. I was seeing the following error in my logs, when I tried to log into a mailbox through IMP. [Dovecot] UID sync errors

Hello, I recently converted my 300+ email user system over to Dovecot. It is working fantastically, except for UID sync errors. I read everything I could find and only saw others with those problems in version 0.99 below. My log shows errors like this all day long for pretty much all users: dovecot: Jun 25 19:12:46 Error: POP3(nmichel): Maildir /home/rtb/users/nmichel/.Maildir sync: UID < next_uid (42 < 43, file = msg.oP8c:2,) dovecot: Jun 25 19:25:59 Error: IMAP(lcrowe): Maildir /home/dentist/users/lcrowe/.Maildir sync: UID inserted in the middle of mailbox (70 > 4, file = msg.AM81:2,) When this happens, IMAP and POP3 drop the connections sending errors to their clients. I use squirrelmail over IMAP and some new emails never appear until I delete the index files. I have tried deleting indexes, and the problem continued. I went from dovecot-1.0.beta3 to dovecot-1.0.beta9 and still happens. The only way it doesn't happen is when I append the INDEX=MEMORY trick as in: default_mail_env = maildir:~/.Maildir:INDEX=MEMORY but then it's all so slow for large mailboxes, it's painful. Here are some of my specs: Linux kernel 2.6.15 Maildir Auth from /etc/shadow Users from /etc/passwd Does anyone have any hints on where I should start? Thanks in advance. I love Dovecot. Hello. This isn't actually a dovecot question, but I'm running in clienys servers dovecot mostly as pop3 server and now started to migrate some servers to imap. But as clients uses Outlook Express how to transfer their pop3 settings and mailboxes to imap?. Making a new mail account for imap is easy, and drag & drop the default folders (inbox, outbox etc) messages to imap accounts default folders is easy, but what about subfolders? Some users have hundreds subfolders and creating them & transfering messages by hand is a pain. So have anyone a better and faster solution how to migrate Outlook Express pop3 account to the imap account, preserving the same folders, rules etc. -- Sysadmin

I've included a patch file for quota-fs.c <sys/quota.h> on RHEL 3 sets _LINUX_QUOTA_VERSION to 1 if it's not defined by default. I copied <sys/quota.h> to ./sysquota.h and edited it to set _LINUX_QUOTA_VERSION to 2 if not defined since that's the version i'm using on my machine. I don't know if that's necessarily appropriate so I'm not including that file. (I then modified quota-fs.h to load "sysquota.h" instead of <sys/quota.h>) I was able to get it to compile and properly show the quota information now. I'd like to do more testing (like seeing if explicitly setting _LINUX_QUOTA_VERSION to 2 is really necesssary) but my one and only RHEL 3 machine is my production mail server, so I can't really do that. Anyways, since I figured out the problem and fixed it for myself, I thought I would share :) Timo, perhaps if you have the time to look at the patch and if the modifications to the quota.h file are necessary or not and include it into the next CVS update, I'm sure people would appreciate it. And file rebuild but still ssl doesn't work. I try # /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/ssl-build-param /usr/local/etc/dovecot-ssl-parameters.dat SSL parameters regeneration completed And ssl doesn't work and I still get message Waiting for SSL parameter file /usr/local/etc/dovecot-ssl-parameters.dat I do not know what to do. I have another server with 1.0.beta8 and ssl work fine.

Hi Timo&all, a recent change in the sql drivers introduced escaping, but sqlite is a different in this aspect: You cannot escape with a backslash, the only character that needs escaping is the quoting character itself (by doubling it, as the SQL standard says). As the escaping function does not know which quote character is used, one should only use the single tick ' (again, as the SQL standard says) and the escaping function double any single quote in the string. (untested) patch for the latter attached. Hi, today I have built dovecot from cvs sources, and upgraded server from beta-7 to this newer version. Then i got problems with opening INBOX using thunderbird 1.5.0.2. Timo - The only behavior change that I notice is that when I exit the telnet session the truss also exits. Previously, the truss hung around until I did the "pkill dovecot", after exiting the telnet session. So, that's weird. But, hold on! I have just upgraded from courier to dovecot and things seem to be working okay (after a few problems getting shared folders working correctly). I have followed the steps to try to get a core dump but it doesn't seem to be working. During the early Dovecot LDA brainstorming discussions, there was some talk about the possibility of including an LMTP interface, and I've noticed that there's an "is it needed?" question about LMTP in Dovecot's TODO file. I'd like to put in a vote for LMTP, and I'm wondering if anyone else has a need for it. Specifically, I'd love an LMTP-enabled LDA that uses hard links when when delivering the same message to multiple recipients (I'm thinking Maildir files), as it would be a nice way to facilitate so-called Single Instance Storage. Can anyone help me with this issue? The CEO of our company keeps getting IMAP time out errors and "mailbox is in an inconsistent state" messages. He uses Outlook 2003. There are errors on the server side. This is what it says: "Jun 19 08:08:34 burmail imap(ed): Corrupted binary tree file /home/ed/mail/.imap/INBOX/.imap.index.tree: UID to be inserted isn't hi gher than existing (2 <= 504)" Can someone tell me what that means?? I have been assigned to take over for a departed sys admin and have never used or administered Dovecot before. Thank You! Patrick

hello The homedirectories are stored as a relative path in my userdb One problem ocoures with rawlog: rawloging occures only if a directory $HOME/dovecot.rawlog exist. this is checked with lstat for me $HOME is always "username/". Hi I've been reading a lot, but I think I'am confused about namespaces. We are planning a migration of our pshychical mail storage. This will mean that subfolders are moving from /home to /var/spool/mail. I was thinking, for the migrations of creating a realm. I would like that if a user logs in with his username, the old location is used, if the user logs in with username@REALM, the subfolders are to be searched in the new location, is this possible? Can I use a different mail location per realm? thx in advance Arne

[Dovecot] dovecot and thunderbird

We've been using dovecot for a while now (currently 1.0beta7) and it works nicely. We have just one reoccuring problem: When using thunderbird as the imap client sometimes when messages are moved from the inbox to other folders (including Trash) they shortly thereafter reappear in the inbox - this can happen multiple times to the same message. We have multiple namespaces set up so that inbox is mbox format in ~/.poffice/username and other folders are maildir in ~/Maildir - both of these are on NFS. Indexes are on local storage. The problem only seems to happen with thunderbird. kmail, mac mail, outlook, pine all work fine. If we effectively move a user so that their inbox is also maildir then the problem doesn't happen. The inbox being mbox format is for historic reasons and medium to long term this should change to maildir but in the interim can anyone see anything different that thunderbird does to other imap clients that might be tickling an underlying bug? cheers mark

Hi folks. I'm using evolution 2.2.3 on Fedora Core 4 with simap to dovecot 1.0beta9. I had the same problem with dovecot 1.0alpha1. The problem is that I can't seem to subscribe to any folders. Nor can I seem to get this combination to list all of my folders. I'd be fine with either. It used to be, that if I just toggled "show only subscribed folders" a few times, I'd start getting folders, but not anymore. Of course, sometimes the behavior would be the opposite of what I'd selected, but I wasn't too worried about that. Any suggestions? Thanks!

[Dovecot] maildir++ Quotas - bizarre behavior.

Hi Timo et al. I've been trying to track down why Dovecot recalculations of maildirsize are so wildly different (lower) than what Maildrop comes up with. I think I've found some bizarre behavior in Dovecot -- this is in beta9 as well as CVS from yesterday. It appears Dovecot isn't looking at /Maildir/cur ... /Maildir/new and /Maildir/tmp. It is, however, looking at /Maildir/.Drafts, /Maildir/.Sent, and /Maildir/.Trash. None of these folders contain any messages, but Dovecot seems to count the existence of . and .. as message files. Worse, it's coming up with actual usage data for these empty (of messages) folders. Presumably it's counting the log and cache files. I've attached a diff to quota-maildir.c which will enable some verbose logging. Also attached is a ls -lR of the Maildir in question as well as the output of the aforementioned debugging. Hi, I'm still getting the errors below on Debian Etch with Dovecot 1.0.8-4 and Dovecot LDA. Is this something that's fixed in 1.0.9? It doesn't seem to have an effect but I'm wary of messages I don't recognise! Hello, I'm a new user of Dovecot (since 1.0b8) and I'ld report about a possible bug. Situation: Dovecot 1.0beta9 with kqueue support FreeBSD 6.1-Release x86 machine (IBM x206, P4 3.2 Ghz) local filesystem UFS2 This is an internal, experimental, mail server running Postfix and Dovecot configured with Maildirs e IMAP-only access. Clients are quite few, now, just because it's an experiment. However are near all Outlook Express 6. Running with dovecot 1.0 beta8 _without_ kqueue support for few weeks was fine, no problems at all. A couple of days ago I updated to beta9 (using FreeBSD's portupgrade tools) and in the _same_time_ I enabled the kqueue support. Dear Dovecot, I have a user who claims his mail is being lost. I can find the message marked as having been accepted for delivery in the maillog. I am hoping there is a tool which will let me read his IMAP transactions. We are delivering the messages with procmail and storing them as Maildir files. I read mail on this very same server and process about 500 mails per day. (Its the machine where all of my mail lists are collected.) I use T-bird, he uses LookOut. My working theory is that he (or his MUA) is somehow deleting some of his mail. Being able to read a log of his IMAP transactions would be most helpful. I see nothing about this in the Wiki. [Dovecot] repairing mbox files

Hi folks, Is there a good tool for repairing/working with mbox files? I'm trying to get a user moved off of Entourage (Outlook for Mac). Entourage actually exports the mail (was pop, will be imap) as mbox files, however, I can't just drop them in place even after fixing the line-endings. many of the messages with attachments come up with the correct header info but no message body or attachment. But some work so it's clearly a problem that a lot the messages are malformed somehow. Server is RHEL 4, dovecot-0.99.11-2.EL4.1 Current client is Mozilla Thunderbird (1.5.0.4) in Mac OS X 10.4.6 using IMAP. Previous client was MS Entourage (OS x 10.4.6) using POP. When I switch to mysql, the mysql log shows a connection when dovecot starts but no further activity. The reply to the imap client is NO Temporary authentication failure.
