I've gotten fairly far into compiling and running dovecot on HPUX. The problem I'm currently having is that the index seems to be mmap'ed at twice after login. The virtual address range reserved for a file range is determined at the time of the initial mapping of the file range into a process address space. The system allocates only the virtual address range necessary to represent the initial mapping. As long as the initial mapping exists, subsequent attempts to map a different file range that includes any portion of the initial range may fail with an ENOMEM error if an extended contiguous address range that preserves the mappings of the initial range cannot be allocated. So, I was trying to look at why the index file is being mapped twice, and why the addr isn't saved and reused. I was thinking of adding it to one of the index structures and skipping the mmap if the addr != 0. I've been poking around for a couple of hours today and am going to call it a day, but I thought I'd ping the list to see if there was something obvious I was missing. Rich

I'm running maildir quotas with rc1 (dovecot-20060628) and get the following when trying to APPEND: "NO Unknown error" System logs show: Quota: Couldn't get new message's size .... and the file isn't there (unknown if Dovecot removed it, or if the lack of the file is the cause of the error). I reverted back to dovecot-20060621 and APPEND is now working again. Steve

Hi, I am using the Debian dovecot packages and the deliver LDA from postfix, all version 1.0.beta8. My problem is with quota support, I am using Maildirs. The relevant configuration stuff is included at the bottom of this email. Quota support seems to work with IMAP. However, even when IMAP complains about an account being over quota, the deliver LDA still happily writes new mail to the (correct) Maildirs. I cannot see any warnings or other hints. Can you spot what I am doing wrong? Hello, I'd like to make sure my understanding of the mbox locking strategy is correct : - "mbox_dotlock_change_timeout" directive : a process seeing that an already locked (by another process) mbox he want to access hasn't change for this amount of time, allows himself to override the lock ? If it's using fcntl, is it only possible to override ? - when a process abort trying to get a lock after mbox_lock_timeout, does the UA sees anything ? - multiple locking methods in "mbox_write_lock" : if I state, for instance, mbox_write_locks = dotlock fcntl when does exactly dotlock method get used and when does fcntl get used ? Are both used simultaneously ? With maildir, if you have a colon in a folder name, and you try to set a keyword on a message in that folder, the keyword does not get set - and worse, all existing keywords and other status information gets dropped (flagged, seen, replied, trashed). Bill

Dovecot will soon have a plugin which allows running a nightly cronjob to expunge mails from configured mailboxes which have been in there for a configurable amount of time. For example the configuration could be: plugin { # Trash 7d, Spam 30d expire = Trash 7 Spam 30 } It also supports using Dovecot's lib-dict to keep track of the mailboxes and their oldest mail's timestamp, so that the nightly cronjob can quickly go through only those mailboxes that have those old mails. Berkeley DB support has been added to lib-dict for this purpose, but you could use SQL as well. There's however one problem with it that I could use opinions on. Currently there's no way to know how long a mail has been in a mailbox. There are pretty much 3 ways to handle this: 1) When copying to those Trash/Spam mailboxes the message's INTERNALDATE could be replaced with the current time. That way the INTERNALDATE tells how long the message has been in there. The obvious downside of this is that if the user wants to move the message back to another mailbox, the original INTERNALDATE is lost (INTERNALDATE means the time when the message was received and is often the timestamp used to sort messages). 2) Preserve the INTERNALDATE while copying, but still use it anyway. Often the messages are moved to Trash (and especially to Spam) soon after they have been received. If not, then the user has time until the next nightly cronjob to move the messages back before they're lost. 3) Add a new field to index file which contains the date when the message was copied. This could be done only for those Trash/Spam boxes so they don't waste space for other mailboxes. The problem with this is that it won't work if there are no index files. To overcome that problem the time could be stored in yet another place, such as maildir filename and some new mbox header. I don't see supporting those as worth the trouble though, so the fallback could be either the date index file is created or the messages' INTERNALDATE. I think either 1) or 3) would be best solutions. 3) probably, but if index files don't exist nearly permanently, it's not very reliable..

[Dovecot] Postfix "userlookup" via Dovecot Auth

I'm hoping to take advantage of authentication caching via dovecot-auth. I see that posfix can communicate with Dovecot-Auth, via SASL, but from what I can see, postfix only does this for authentication checks. Not 100% sure how postfix handles virtual_transport (I assume it needs to do a lookup via virtual_mailbox_maps), but I can't see anyway to get virtual_mailbox_maps to use dovecot-auth ether. I guess I may just have to get the virtual_mailbox_maps to look up userdata via SQL as well as Dovecot, but I was hoping to avoid what will be 3 similar lookups one after the other (dovecot-lda is in use as well). My intended setup is "Postfix" -- LMTP --> "Dspam" -- DeliveryAgent --> "Dovecot-LDA", with each stage currently doing a SQL lookup for user information. It would be awesome if they all used SASl via Dovecot-Auth so that the Auth cache does it's job! Reading the doc files in Dspam is confusing me, as the relay file seems to be mixed up. Hi dovecot developers, Is there any plan to have a plugin which deletes old messages from certain folders at login time? I am thinking along the lines of the automatic removal of old messages from say, the Trash folder. This functionality exists in courier-imap and cyrus imap, and would be very handy to have in dovecot too. -- Anand

Hi all, I'm running Dovecot 1.0 beta8 on CentOS 4.3. In the "protocol imap { }" section, I have enabled the following 2 plugins: imap_quota quota In the "plugin { }" section, I have configured the following: quota = maildir imap_quota = maildir This all works well, and if I use IMAP, Dovecot correctly updates the maildirsize file in user Maildirs. However, I need quota to work for POP3 as well. If I enable the quota plugin in the "protocol pop3 { }" section, I get the following error in the log: dlopen(/usr/lib/dovecot/pop3/lib01_quota_plugin.so) failed: /usr/lib/dovecot/pop3/lib01_quota_plugin.so: undefined symbol: mountpoint_get Along with this error, POP3 logins are not possible. The server crashes, and client connection is closed. Is there a fix for this problem? Regards, -- Anand

The error is that you have glibc-2.4 which triggers inotify support in dovecot on linux boxes (in the Gentoo ebuild). However, glibc-2.4 needs to be compiled against linux-headers-2.6.13 or later as they provide the linux/inotify.h header which glibc needs. I've spoken to our toolchain guys and they don't want to remove glibc's inotify.h so they keep their ABI which makes perfect sense to them. So I've hacked up a patch to dovecots configure.in that only enables inotify if it really works :) It also tests for inotify, then kqueue, then dnotify if no notify method is specified. Seems to work well. If upstream (Timo) accepts it then I'll roll it into beta9's ebuild ASAP A better solution would be to have something in the code though as if the kernel suddenly drops to <2.6.13 then you'll get the same errors. In the meantime, I've forced the beta9 ebuild to only use inotify if >=glibc-2.4 and >=linux-headers-2.6.16 are present, and I hope glibc has been compiled against them - lol. [Dovecot] pop-3 login delay

We are running Dovecot 1.0.beta9 w/ mysql authentication. Mail storage is a Network Appliance F810 filer and we are using maildir. The only issue that we have run into is that pop3 logins take much longer than imap logins within dovecott and many times longer than a similar connection with courier-imap. For example, dovecot IMAP and courier-imap POP3 and IMAP logins take less than 1/2 second to complete the login. dovecot POP3 takes 2-3 seconds. I have disabled MMAP and am using fcntl. [Dovecot] 1.0 RC1 status #2

I've done several fixes since my original RC1 status mail. Most importantly I noticed that SEARCH command has been somewhat broken for a long time if the search condition contained OR or NOT conditions. Then again fixing that caused Dovecot to assert-crash for some searches. That should be fixed now. Hopefully I didn't break the SEARCH in other ways while doing this.. So, again, please test the latest CVS or the latest nightly snapshot from http://dovecot.org/nightly/ Especially I'm interested in: - Does SEARCH work correctly? - Does ioloop checks now work properly? There were mails about it being broken with kqueue and epoll. - Does mboxes with CR+LF linefeeds work correctly? I'm hoping to release the 1.0 RC1 late in sunday or in monday morning (EEST). Then a status update of my life in case you're interested: I got in pretty much everywhere I applied for: CS and biotech in Helsinki university and biotech in Tampere university. For Helsinki's biochem I'm the first in the waiting list, which means I almost certainly would get in there too. So, unless something suddenly changes my mind, I'm moving to Tampere in two months. [Dovecot] Asterisks (*) in Folder Names disallowed?

As far as I can see the RFC for IMAP should allow the * character in the folder name. This is certainly allowed in UW IMAP. Dovecot seems to object however with: ERROR : Could not complete request. Query: COPY 9975:9975 "mail/*myfolder" Reason Given: Invalid mailbox name. Could this restriction be lifted? Best wishes, Daniel

Hi, After using dovecot 0.99.14 on a production server with full satisfaction, I'm now giving a try to 1.0beta8 (I know beta9 is out, but it's not yet available within Debian). The new features are great. Maildir++ quotas seem to work fine, and shared folders look promising (despite a few issues). My problem is that I could not fire out how to set quotas on shared folders. Hello! I have very strange problem with dovecot and thunderbird while deleting messages. The problem is that they are not actually deleted from storage filesystem and if I later run mutt I can perfectly see them, though marked with 'D', so mutt ask to delete them on exit and this time they dissapear from filesystem. I enabled in thunderbird 'remove it iimediately' feature, but this doesn't help. When I delete message from mutt it removed from filesystem just fine. IMAP server: OS: FreeBSD 6.1p2 dovecot: dovecot-1.0.b9 Client: OS: Debian sarge Thunderbird: thunderbird 1.5.0.4 (from backports.org) Any suggestions ?

When I do a search in squirrelmail, it will start giving several results, but then fails. Hi guys, I've run into a strange problem using beta 8 and beta 9 when using the latest version of Horde/IMP Through IMP, I can see that there are messages in the maildir on the sidemenu(popup menu) but the emails don't show in my actual inbox. I thought this was an IMP problem, but then I downgraded to dovecot 99 series RPM and this resolved the problem. I was seeing the following error in my logs, when I tried to log into a mailbox through IMP. Hello, I recently converted my 300+ email user system over to Dovecot. It is working fantastically, except for UID sync errors. I read everything I could find and only saw others with those problems in version 0.99 below. My log shows errors like this all day long for pretty much all users: dovecot: Jun 25 19:12:46 Error: POP3(nmichel): Maildir /home/rtb/users/nmichel/.Maildir sync: UID < next_uid (42 < 43, file = msg.oP8c:2,) dovecot: Jun 25 19:25:59 Error: IMAP(lcrowe): Maildir /home/dentist/users/lcrowe/.Maildir sync: UID inserted in the middle of mailbox (70 > 4, file = msg.AM81:2,) When this happens, IMAP and POP3 drop the connections sending errors to their clients. I use squirrelmail over IMAP and some new emails never appear until I delete the index files. I have tried deleting indexes, and the problem continued. I went from dovecot-1.0.beta3 to dovecot-1.0.beta9 and still happens. The only way it doesn't happen is when I append the INDEX=MEMORY trick as in: default_mail_env = maildir:~/.Maildir:INDEX=MEMORY but then it's all so slow for large mailboxes, it's painful. Here are some of my specs: Linux kernel 2.6.15 Maildir Auth from /etc/shadow Users from /etc/passwd Does anyone have any hints on where I should start? Thanks in advance. I love Dovecot. Hello. This isn't actually a dovecot question, but I'm running in clienys servers dovecot mostly as pop3 server and now started to migrate some servers to imap. But as clients uses Outlook Express how to transfer their pop3 settings and mailboxes to imap?. Making a new mail account for imap is easy, and drag & drop the default folders (inbox, outbox etc) messages to imap accounts default folders is easy, but what about subfolders? Some users have hundreds subfolders and creating them & transfering messages by hand is a pain. So have anyone a better and faster solution how to migrate Outlook Express pop3 account to the imap account, preserving the same folders, rules etc. -- Sysadmin

I've included a patch file for quota-fs.c <sys/quota.h> on RHEL 3 sets _LINUX_QUOTA_VERSION to 1 if it's not defined by default. I copied <sys/quota.h> to ./sysquota.h and edited it to set _LINUX_QUOTA_VERSION to 2 if not defined since that's the version i'm using on my machine. (I then modified quota-fs.h to load "sysquota.h" instead of <sys/quota.h>) I was able to get it to compile and properly show the quota information now. I'd like to do more testing (like seeing if explicitly setting _LINUX_QUOTA_VERSION to 2 is really necesssary) but my one and only RHEL 3 machine is my production mail server, so I can't really do that. And file rebuild but still ssl doesn't work. Hi Timo&all, a recent change in the sql drivers introduced escaping, but sqlite is a different in this aspect: You cannot escape with a backslash, the only character that needs escaping is the quoting character itself (by doubling it, as the SQL standard says). As the escaping function does not know which quote character is used, one should only use the single tick ' (again, as the SQL standard says) and the escaping function double any single quote in the string. Hi, today I have built dovecot from cvs sources, and upgraded server from beta-7 to this newer version. Then i got problems with opening INBOX using thunderbird 1.5.0.2. Timo - The only behavior change that I notice is that when I exit the telnet session the truss also exits. Previously, the truss hung around until I did the "pkill dovecot", after exiting the telnet session. So, that's weird. But, hold on! I have just upgraded from courier to dovecot and things seem to be working okay (after a few problems getting shared folders working correctly). During the early Dovecot LDA brainstorming discussions, there was some talk about the possibility of including an LMTP interface, and I've noticed that there's an "is it needed?" question about LMTP in Dovecot's TODO file. I'd like to put in a vote for LMTP, and I'm wondering if anyone else has a need for it. Specifically, I'd love an LMTP-enabled LDA that uses hard links when when delivering the same message to multiple recipients (I'm thinking Maildir files), as it would be a nice way to facilitate so-called Single Instance Storage. Can anyone help me with this issue? The CEO of our company keeps getting IMAP time out errors and "mailbox is in an inconsistent state" messages. He uses Outlook 2003. There are errors on the server side. This is what it says: "Jun 19 08:08:34 burmail imap(ed): Corrupted binary tree file /home/ed/mail/.imap/INBOX/.imap.index.tree: UID to be inserted isn't hi gher than existing (2 <= 504)" Can someone tell me what that means?? hello The homedirectories are stored as a relative path in my userdb One problem ocoures with rawlog: rawloging occures only if a directory $HOME/dovecot.rawlog exist. this is checked with lstat for me $HOME is always "username/". Hi I've been reading a lot, but I think I'am confused about namespaces. We are planning a migration of our pshychical mail storage. This will mean that subfolders are moving from /home to /var/spool/mail. I was thinking, for the migrations of creating a realm. I would like that if a user logs in with his username, the old location is used, if the user logs in with username@REALM, the subfolders are to be searched in the new location, is this possible? Can I use a different mail location per realm? thx in advance Arne

I'm very sorry if this is a faq. I've spent considerable time reading documentation and doing Google searches to no avail...and the mailing list archive isn't searchable as far as I can tell. [Dovecot] dovecot and thunderbird

We've been using dovecot for a while now (currently 1.0beta7) and it works nicely. We have just one reoccuring problem: When using thunderbird as the imap client sometimes when messages are moved from the inbox to other folders (including Trash) they shortly thereafter reappear in the inbox - this can happen multiple times to the same message. We have multiple namespaces set up so that inbox is mbox format in ~/.poffice/username and other folders are maildir in ~/Maildir - both of these are on NFS. Indexes are on local storage. The problem only seems to happen with thunderbird. kmail, mac mail, outlook, pine all work fine. If we effectively move a user so that their inbox is also maildir then the problem doesn't happen. The inbox being mbox format is for historic reasons and medium to long term this should change to maildir but in the interim can anyone see anything different that thunderbird does to other imap clients that might be tickling an underlying bug? cheers mark
