[Dovecot] .'s in folder names
by Craig Whitmore 09 Apr '06

09 Apr '06

Hi there We are trying to move over from 1 IMAP server to another, but the problem is dovecot does not allow .'s in folder names (and we have quite a number of people who do have .'s in their folder names (ie "www.domain stuff") Is there anyway of allowing dovecot to allow .'s in folder names? Thanks Craig Whitmore

[Dovecot] problem with userdb_ on pgsql

[Dovecot] How to use Master Users.
by Adam M. Dunn 09 Apr '06

09 Apr '06

Hi. I'm testing out the new 'master users' feature, and I'm not having any luck getting it to work. Anyone out there using it yet? Here's what I have so far: dovecot.conf: ------------ auth_master_user_separator = * auth default { passdb passwd-file { # Master users that can login as anyone else args = /etc/dovecot/dovecot.masterusers master = yes pass = yes } # LDAP database passdb ldap { args = /etc/dovecot/dovecot-ldap.conf } ... ... } dovecot.masterusers: ------------------- testuser:{plain}testpass # telnet localhost imap Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. * OK IMAP server ready. 1 login realuser*testuser "testpass" 1 NO Authentication failed. As you can see I get authentication failed. The log shows it fails for the 'realuser' that exists in ldap. Any ideas out there? I have the 'testuser' also setup in /etc/passwd. Thanks Adam

[Dovecot] Questions about differences to other mail servers
by Kai Schaetzl 09 Apr '06

09 Apr '06

I just transferred over my first server from Suse Linux with uw-imap(ipop3/imap2003) to CentOS with Dovecot (0.99). I didn't find any problems in the testing phase, but when the actual transfer into production happened I found a few problems crop up: 1. Dovecot wants to chdir in the user's home directory even when logging in via POP3. However, the mailboxes for POP3 are all in /var/spool/mail. What's the reason for this and can I stop this? 2. In addition I found that the home directories need additional permissions I did not need when using ipop3/imap2003, although this imap server needs to write/read in the same directories as dovecot. Specifically, I had to change the permissions on the directory right above the pop user directories from 750 to 755. Those directories are owned by the user and the primary group he belongs to. It seems that dovecot somehow doesn't "use" the primary group of the user and so can't traverse thru and the chdir fails. 3. Furthermore, Dovecot created an IMAP directory structure within the home directory of most users like "mail/.imap/INBOX" (on some it reused the existing Mail -uppercase- directory). Just on a simple first POP3 login. What's the reason for doing this? Maybe that user is never going to use IMAP? Does it test for both mail and Mail before it creates it's own structure or what does it do? I assume this is related to default_mail_env? 4. Dovecot supports "auth plain", does it also support "auth login"? If so, how do I enable it? Kai -- Kai Schätzl, Berlin, Germany Get your web at Conactive Internet Services: http://www.conactive.com

[Dovecot] LDA and Shared Mailboxes
by Timothy White 09 Apr '06

09 Apr '06

I'm hoping LDA has what I'm looking for, basically, I want to be able to deliver mail, to a shared mailbox. Ideally, I'd like a method of determining what address can send to the shared mailbox, and I don't like the idea of having to copy emails into the mailbox, to 'send' to it. I'd prefer to just send to an address, and if your permissions are correct, then the email is delivered to the shared mailbox. Any ideas? Thanks Tim -- Linux Counter user #273956

[Dovecot] preserving pop3 mail uids
by adcx＠server101.com 09 Apr '06

09 Apr '06

Is there some way that message uids can be preserved when converting uw-pop3 mbox mail to dovecot maildir format? We've tried perfect_maildir, mb2md and the convert-tool that comes with dovecot but so far have been unable to preserve the message uids, which for example go from 44333a8500000003 before the conversion to 4434621500000003 afterwards. The quantity of mailboxes involved means forcing users to re-pop old emails left on the server isn't an option. Any help appreciated.

[Dovecot] LDAP authentication via PAM
by Oscar A. Valdez 09 Apr '06

09 Apr '06

I've configured dovecot to authenticate against a Fedora Directory Server. The mail server on which dovecot is installed has the nss_ldap and pam_ldap packages installed, and /etc/dovecot.conf has the following two lines: auth_userdb = ldap /etc/dovecot-ldap.conf auth_passdb = pam In other words, I want dovecot to use LDAP to access the user database, but PAM for authentication. This part is working, since users authenticate and get their mails correctly through dovecot. /etc/dovecot-ldap.conf contains the following: hosts = 192.168.0.2 ldap_version = 3 base = ou=People, dc=duraflex, dc=com, dc=sv deref = never scope = subtree user_attrs = uid, homeDirectory,,,uidNumber, gidNumber user_filter = (&(objectClass=posixAccount)(uid=%u)) I haven't specified a dn or dnpass, since all I need is that dovecot perform an anonymous query for the uid, homeDirectory, uidNumber and gidNumber fields of its users, which are publically viewable. However, my FDS server's access log has entries like these: conn=3266227 fd=138 slot=138 connection from 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.2 conn=3266227 op=0 BIND dn="" method=128 version=3 conn=3266227 op=0 RESULT err=0 tag=97 nentries=0 etime=0 dn="" conn=3266227 op=1 SRCH base="ou=People,dc=duraflex,dc=com,dc=sv" scope=1 filter="(&(objectClass=posixAccount)(uid=dovecot))" attrs=ALL conn=3266227 op=1 RESULT err=0 tag=101 nentries=0 etime=0 conn=3266227 op=2 SRCH base="ou=Groups,dc=duraflex,dc=com,dc=sv" scope=1 filter="(&(objectClass=posixGroup)(memberUid=dovecot))" attrs="gidNumber" conn=3266227 op=2 RESULT err=0 tag=101 nentries=0 etime=0 conn=3266227 op=-1 fd=138 closed - B1 Dovecot binds anonimously with an empty dn, then queries FDS for a user and a group called dovecot (which don't exist on the DS), and finds 0 entries. Is it possible to access the user database through PAM (auth_userdb = pam)? Since I'm running the nss_ldap and pam_ldap modules, it'd really be an LDAP query for users, and a query in /etc/passwd and /etc/group for dovecot (since it's a local user and group on the mail server). -- Oscar A. [Dovecot] auth problem with dovecot-1.0.beta5
by Alan McKay 09 Apr '06

09 Apr '06

Hey folks, Let me start by saying I really love what I see so far! Dovecot seems to be extremely feature-rich, and unlike a lot of free software the documentation is extremely good! I gave up on courier IMAP because of the poor documentation, and I have to say Dovecot sure differentiates itself in that area! Unfortunately I still can't get it going :-/ First thing I noticed is that --with-shadow does not appear to be working on my FreeBSD 6.0 system. Here is what I built with : ./configure --prefix=/usr/local --enable-shared --enable-static --disable-ipv6 --with-ioloop =poll --with-passwd --with-shadow --with-pam --with-passwd-file --without-checkpassword --wit hout-bsdauth --without-gssapi --without-ldap --with-static-userdb --without-prefetch-userdb --without-sql --without-mysql --without-ssl --with-rundir=/var/run/dovecot --with-storages=mb ox --without-sql-drivers However : root@heimat# dovecot --build-options Build options: ioloop=poll Passdb: checkpassword pam passwd passwd-file vpopmail Userdb: checkpassword passwd passwd-file static vpopmail And when I try to include the shadow options in the config file I get this in the log file : Apr 8 17:07:38 heimat dovecot: auth(default): Unknown passdb driver 'shadow' (typo, or Dovecot was built without support for it? Check with dovecot --build-options) No big deal. I've never used PAM, but I'll have a go at it. My config file looks like this : base_dir = /var/run/dovecot/ protocols = imap listen = 127.0.0.1 ssl_disable = yes first_valid_uid = 1000 last_valid_uid = 2000 first_valid_gid = 1000 last_valid_gid = 2000 default_mail_env = mbox:~/IMAP/:INBOX=/var/mail/%u mail_extra_groups = mail protocol imap { } auth_executable = /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/dovecot-auth auth_username_chars = abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ01234567890 auth default { mechanisms = plain userdb passwd { } passdb pam { # args = session=yes * args = * } #passdb passwd { #} # /etc/shadow or similiar, using getspnam(). Deprecated by PAM nowadays. #passdb shadow { #} user = root } And I cannot get my webmail to auth. So I decided to "telnet localhost 143" and try typing the login command like the docs suggest. But here's what I get : telnet localhost 143 Trying ::1... telnet: connect to address ::1: Connection refused Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost.dmz.alanmckay.com. Escape character is '^]'. * OK Dovecot ready. LOGIN amckay XXXXXX LOGIN BAD Error in IMAP command received by server. Something tells me there is a big problem here :-/ Which brings me to my next question : is there a "latest stable" release? I didn't see anything obvious on the website. thanks! -Alan -- "True Budo is done for the sake of building peace. [Dovecot] One dovecot, multiple addresses
by Nick Plante 09 Apr '06

09 Apr '06

There was a thread in February called "One dovecot, multiple domains" that I'd like to follow up on... I have a similar need; a hosted system with a couple IP aliases currently running dovecot for users at imap.domain1.com on one of those addresses. Now I need to also make it accessible via the name imap.domain2.com on a different address. Both "hosts" require SSL certs. They'll be using the same user auth source and have access to the same mailspools (although certain users will access theirs through domain1 and others through domain2). It sounds like dovecot doesn't support this sort of ip-based virtual hosting scheme right now. Is it possible to just configure two separate instances of the server, one bound to each virtual interface with their separate certs? Or are there issues with this poor man approach (contention, etc)? TIA; nap.

[Dovecot] plain auth problem with beta4
by Mark Davies 08 Apr '06

08 Apr '06

Using kmail with PLAIN authentication worked fine with beta3 but trying it with beta4 authentication fails. This is because kmail sends "username \0 username \0 password" in the authorization token and the new code to call auth_request_set_login_username() when supplied an authid must be returning failure (certainly commenting this code out returns to the beta3 behaviour of successfully authenticating). I had a quick look at the routine to see why it might be failing but didn't really work out what its supposed to do. cheers mark

Hi guys, So is there resolution to my query below? Is this a bug in beta3? Thanks. Neil -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Imap Timeouts Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2006 16:56:21 +0200 From: Neil Wilson <neilw(a)dcdata.co.za> To: dovecot(a)dovecot.org Hi guys, I've got a client running 1.0.beta3 on SuSe 9.3 Everything has been running perfectly since it was installed about 6 months ago, but lately they've had issues with email clients not being able to connect to the IMAP server, until they close their clients(Thunderbird & Outlook) and then re-open them. They have roughly 70 users on their network, so it sounds like it could be too many active sessions at once, but I've tried changing a few things in the config, and so far nothing has resolved this. Re: [Dovecot] batch convert mbox to maildir
by Todd Piket 05 Apr '06

I did not use the the libc-client Perl bindings...sorry. I used a modified version of mb2md-3.20. It was pretty simple really. If you'd like to look at/dowload the source please visit: http://svn.dcs.it.mtu.edu/email.mtu.edu/convert_tools/tags/mb2md-release-4.… (I have my own release numbers for the whole system I wrapped around mb2md). Not a lot of documentation and there is a lot that is specific to my site, but it shouldn't be too hard to decipher and you can always ask me questions, though I'm going to take a well earned next 2 days off. If anyone is interested, the conversion we just performed has been in place for ~5 days now. Only a handful of the ~30,000 users we converted noticed we even did anything (except performance) is better (this was in large part due to the UIDL code I added to mb2md). [Dovecot] Overriding inbox location in passwd-like file
by Václav Haisman 05 Apr '06

05 Apr '06

Hi, I have some real users and some virtual users. The real users use mbox file as their inbox. But I'd like to use Maildir as inbox for the virtual users. (The reason is that I am actually moving some accounts from another server that already uses Maildir.) I'd like Dovecot to find Maildir in $HOME of my virtual users as their inbox. So I tried to use the following in my users.passwd file: test:{PLAIN}some_password:30003:30003::/home/vmail/domain/test:/bin/false::maildir:%h/Maildir/:INBOX=maildir:%h/Maildir/ Unfortunatelly this doesn't work and dies with this message: Mar 8 16:44:25 logout dovecot: imap(test): Ambiguous mail location setting, don't know what to do with it: /home/vmail/isc.cvut.cz/test/mbox (try prefixing it with mbox: or maildir:) Mar 8 16:44:25 logout dovecot: imap(test): Failed to create storage for '' with data: /home/vmail/isc.cvut.cz/test/mbox Mar 8 16:44:25 logout dovecot: child 41976 (imap) returned error 89 Is it even possible to override the setting from dovecot.conf like this? [Dovecot] C programmers, please help. need dovecot patch
by Adam M. Dunn 05 Apr '06

05 Apr '06

Hi all. Can any C programmers out there tell me how to fix Dovecot to default to Maildir format when autodecting can't find anything? I don't know C, but it seems like it would be a simple thing. Right now, I use the autodetect mailbox feature because we want users to choose to optionally be able to use Mbox format (we have some diehard unix users with non-maildir clients). I have Maildrop setup to check for the existance of a ~/Maildir folder in the user's home, and if it exists, it delivers there. Otherwise it falls back to ~/Mail where mbox style files go. The problem with Dovecot is there is no way to tell the autodetect feature what to default to, and if it can't find anything, it automatically creates a folder called ~/mail under the user's home and primes it with an Mbox file, but I'd rather it create a ~/Maildir instead. So if we have for example, a new user with no mail yet, and they log in via IMAP before getting any mail from maildrop, Dovecot will create a them a ~/mail folder. So when they DO get mail, our maildrop filters will think they are an Mbox user. I could do some fancy Maildrop filters to fix that when they get their first mail, but in the meantime the unknowing user could try creating things via IMAP that gets overwritten. Anyway, it would be much cleaner if Dovecot just did what I wanted. If anyone could point me to the place to patch my copy of Dovecot, I would GREATLY apprecieate it. I don't know C, but I know many other languages. I would also like to see this be added via the config file in future releases. So consider this a feature request. Not only that, but more control over the autodetection process in general would be REALLY nice. Thanks. Adam

I'm working on migrating to Dovecot. At the moment, I have a mail path that includes the domain, so I'm using %d to get that. However, if users authenticate without specifying a domain (i.e. using "bob" instead of "bob(a)wiktel.com"), then %d expands to nothing. I'd like to have that expand to a default domain (wiktel.com) instead. Is that possible? Thanks, Richard

[Dovecot] About Released 1.0 alpha5 version
by Gisella Linares 04 Apr '06

04 Apr '06

Hi, I'm woking with dovecot at my work and I would want to upgrade the actual version to Released 1.0 alpha5 version, but when I saw the download section at dovecot home page, I noticed that you have only beta versions available. Because of this, I would want to ask you if since now you only put available beta versions or those of them will be replace for the next alpha version. Thanks for beforehand your gentility in the attention to the present. Regards, Gisella Linares

Just two changes: - Beta4's SSL proxying rewrite worked worse than I thought. Reverted it back to original code. - Filesystem quota plugin now looks up the mount path correctly.

[Dovecot] SSL failures on 1.0B3
by Joseph Filla 04 Apr '06

I have setup Dovecot 1.0B3, and IMAP works fine, but I cannot get IMAPS to work. I've generated the keys with the mkcert script and Thunderbird can see and accept the certificate but tosses an error just after that. In my log, I'm getting: dovecot: Apr 03 19:07:43 Warning: imap-login: SSL_accept() failed: error:140D308A:SSL routines:TLS1_SETUP_KEY_BLOCK:cipher or hash unavailable [x.x.x.x] dovecot: Apr 03 19:07:43 Info: imap-login: Disconnected: rip=x.x.x.x, lip=x.x.x.x, TLS Can anyone give me a tip as to what is the matter? I don't understand these ssl errors, Thanks, -- Joe

[Dovecot] 1.0.beta4 released
by Timo Sirainen 04 Apr '06

04 Apr '06

I haven't had yet time to read all the mails in this list which I skipped in the last few of weeks. I'll try to get to them eventually. This release contains several new features which haven't been fully tested yet, such as ACLs, master users and Maildir++ quota. If you intend to use them, test them properly first. This is the first Dovecot release where it's supposed to work well with NFS. Even with indexes being stored in NFS. I was able to test it only with Linux 2.4 kernels as clients though, and it didn't work well in a stress test. It looked like the problem was caused by the kernel caching the data a bit too much. Hopefully I can test soon with 2.6 kernels. Also note the other changes which might affect you. Especially if you're using Dovecot-LDA remember to upgrade it as well to make sure the default lock_method gets updated in it also. As for the future, it looks like I'm getting soon paid to develop several features to improve Dovecot's performance (by the company which already paid for ACLs, NFS fixes and many other changes in this release, thanks!). * Changed the default lock_method back to fcntl. Apparently flock gives problems with some systems. * mbox: mailboxes beginning with '.' are now also listed * Replaced mail_use_modules and mail_modules settings with mail_plugins and mail_plugin_dir. Now instead of loading all plugins from the directory, you'll have to give a list of plugins to load. If the plugin couldn't be loaded, the process exits instead of just ignoring the problem (this is important with ACL plugin). + Added support for "master users" who can log in as other people. The master username can be given either in authorization ID string with SASL PLAIN mechanism or by setting auth_master_user_separator and giving it within the normal username string. + Added ACL plugin with ACL file backend. This however doesn't mean that there yet exists a proper shared folder support. If master user logged in as someone else, the ACLs are checked as the master user. + Added some Dovecot extensions to checkpassword passdb, see ChangeLog + Updated passwd-file format to allow specifying any key=value fields + Maildir++ quota support and several quota fixes + passdb supporting extra fields: Added "allow_nets" option which takes a comma separated list of IPs/networks where to allow user to log in. + NFS: Handle ESTALE errors the best way we can + IMAP now writes to log when client disconnects + In shared mailboxes (if dovecot-shared file exists) \Seen flags are now kept only in index files, so as long as each user has a separate index file they have separate \Seen flags. - Fixes to DIGEST-MD5 realm handling so it works with more clients - BODYSTRUCTURE -> BODY conversion from cache file was broken with mails containing message/rfc822 parts. - Fixed several memory leaks - We could have sent client FETCH notifications about messages before telling about them with EXISTS - Compiling fixes for Solaris and some other OSes - Fixed problem with internal timeout handling code, which caused eg. outlook-idle workaround to break. - If /dev/urandom didn't exist, we didn't seed OpenSSL's random number generator properly. Patch by Vilmos Nebehaj. - Maildir: Recent flags weren't always immediately removed from mails when mailbox was opened. - Several changes to SSL proxying code, hopefully making it work better.

[Dovecot] Dovecot 1.0beta4 and Disconnected Problem
by Gerhard Wiesinger 04 Apr '06

04 Apr '06

Hello! Yesterday I upgraded from 1.0beta3 to 1.0beta4. I've major problems now with my inbox (quite large, 900MB) and another large folder. Thunderbird 1.5 connects and disconnects. I tried to delete the indexes of dovecot and thunderbird without any sucess. Finally I downgraded to 1.0beta3 and it works well again (Beta3 was running for a timeframe from when it came out and now without any problems). Config is the same as for 1.0beta3. [Dovecot] Re: Courier to Dovecot Maildir conversion
by Roger Weeks 03 Apr '06

03 Apr '06

We went through a courier to dovecot conversion. There are a couple of things that might be causing this problem. 1. Dovecot namespaces 2. Client configuration Your namespaces might not be taking into account the fact that courier prefixed all files and directories in the maildir with a dot (.). You can get around this a couple of ways. We had almost no IMAP clients under courier, so I renamed everything in our IMAP client directories away from .files and .directories, and used a default namespace without dots. Also some clients like Apple Mail needed an IMAP prefix like INBOX. to work with courier. I had to remove those with the dovecot namespace I set up. -- Roger J. [Dovecot] hard quota example, 1.0b3
by Jeff A. Earickson 03 Apr '06

03 Apr '06

Timo, Here's an example of the filesystem quota issue: A user was near his hard filesystem quota, so he moved some junk to his Trash folder to clear disk space. He got the following error on his IMAP client: "Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information. {2006-04033 11:08:44]". My setup: Solaris 9, beta3 (soon going to beta4), mbox format, IMAP only. Home directories (where IMAP folders and index files go) have filesystem quotas. Jeff Earickson Colby College

This feature should not rely on plug-ins, mailbox format, etc. It should be built into the base code, IMHO. Jeff Earickson Colby College

[Dovecot] MySQL auth issues?
by Matthias Saou 03 Apr '06

03 Apr '06

Hi, Since my last email about RHEL4 problems on x86_64, I've kept trying to figure out what the problem might be, and just ran into a reply to an old email I sent to the list, which I had missed. It suggests that the issue might be in the MySQL authentication that I'm using. Here is a more detailed log entry, with auto debugging on : Apr 3 13:13:02 s1 dovecot: auth(default): client in: AUTH 1 PLAIN service=POP3 lip=::ffff:195.x.x.x rip=::ffff:195.x.x.x resp=AHBhcnRuZXJzQdNvbW1lcm3lZ2F0ZS5jb20Aa2F2YWthdmE= Apr 3 13:13:02 s1 dovecot: auth(default): client out: OK 1 user=x(a)domain.com Apr 3 13:13:02 s1 dovecot: auth(default): master in: REQUEST 70 22190 1 Apr 3 13:13:02 s1 dovecot: auth-worker(default): sql(x@domain.com,::ffff:195.x.x.x): SELECT maildir, 101 AS uid, 103 AS gid FROM mailbox WHERE username = 'x(a)domain.com' Apr 3 13:13:02 s1 dovecot: auth(default): master out: USER 70 x(a)domain.com maildir=domain.com/x/ uid=101 gid=103 Apr 3 13:13:02 s1 dovecot: pop3-login: Login: user=<x(a)domain.com>, method=PLAIN, rip=::ffff:195.x.x.x, lip=::ffff:195.x.x.x Apr 3 13:13:02 s1 dovecot: pop3(x(a)domain.com): ^GUnexpected eof found when reading file 'UNOPENED' (Errcode: 0) Apr 3 13:13:02 s1 last message repeated 2 times Apr 3 13:13:02 s1 dovecot: pop3(x(a)domain.com): Disconnected: Logged out top=0/0, retr=0/0, del=0/2, size=17174 Those "Unexpected eof found when reading file 'fileName'" messages are apparently from MySQL, as one can see here for instance : http://www.mysqlfreaks.com/errors/49.php Here is my relevant configuration (all the rest is the default) : login_greeting = Ready. verbose_proctitle = yes first_valid_uid = 101 default_mail_env = maildir:/home/vmail/%d/%n:INDEX=MEMORY auth_cache_size = 512 auth_verbose = yes auth_debug = yes auth_debug_passwords = yes auth default { mechanisms = plain passdb sql { args = /etc/dovecot-mysql.conf } userdb sql { args = /etc/dovecot-mysql.conf } } The INDEX=MEMORY was added because of similar errors with the indexes : Apr 3 12:56:44 s1 dovecot: pop3-login: Login: user=<x(a)domain.com>, method=PLAIN, rip=::ffff:195.x.x.x, lip=::ffff:195.x.x.x, TLS Apr 3 12:56:44 s1 dovecot: pop3(x(a)domaine.com): Corrupted transaction log file /home/vmail/domain.com/x/dovecot.index.log: unexpected end of file while reading header Apr 3 12:56:44 s1 dovecot: pop3(x(a)domain.com): Corrupted transaction log file /home/vmail/domain.com/x/dovecot.index.log: unexpected end of file while reading header Apr 3 12:56:44 s1 dovecot: pop3(x(a)domain.com): Disconnected: Logged out top=0/0, retr=0/0, del=0/0, size=0 (this was when the auth_debug wasn't enabled) Here is my /etc/dovecot-mysql.conf file : driver = mysql connect = host=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock dbname=postfix user=postfix password=xxx default_pass_scheme = PLAIN password_query = SELECT password FROM mailbox WHERE username = '%u' user_query = SELECT maildir, 101 AS uid, 103 AS gid FROM mailbox WHERE username = '%u' I'm using MySQL 4.1.12-3.RHEL4.1 (the original RHEL4 packages), with the server on the same machine (hence the socket access). I was seeing this also with 0.9, not just 1.0 betas. With x86_64 packages, any slight change to the main dovecot.conf file can prevent dovecot from starting (segfault with "Unexpected eof found when reading file 'UNOPENED' (Errcode: 0)" message), whereas i386 packages work somewhat better. This is on the same machine with an i386 compatibility layer. Is anyone using MySQL auth successfully? Any help or pointers would be more than welcome. [Dovecot] mbox-sync-update.c error
by Carlos Vicente 03 Apr '06

03 Apr '06

Hi, I think the problem is in Dovecot. I'm using both Evolution and Thunderbird on a Gentoo box. One of my folders keeps locking up and the clients can't retrieve the messages. The situation appears to be triggered by trying to move a message into that folder. Deleting the index files (under /var/log/dovecot/xxx/) solves the problem (temporarily). I get these error messages in the logs: Mar 31 15:10:34 dovecot: imap(cvicente): mbox sync: UID inserted in the middle of mailbox /home/xxx/Mail/xxx (93 > 3, seq=93, idx_msgs=3455) Mar 31 15:10:34 dovecot: imap(cvicente): file mbox-sync-update.c: line 55 (mbox_sync_move_buffer): assertion failed: (ctx->mail.offset + ctx->mail.space <= ctx->hdr_offset + pos || ctx->mail.offset > ctx->hdr_offset + pos + have) Mar 31 15:10:35 dovecot: child 32373 (imap) killed with signal 6 M I'm running dovecot-1.0_beta3 Hope this gets some attention from the developers. cv >In the maillog I get > > Mar 29 09:17:25 bree dovecot: imap-login: Login: user=<hartr>, > method=plain, rip=::ffff:127.0.0.1, lip=::ffff:127.0.0.1, secured > Mar 29 09:17:25 bree dovecot: imap(hartr): mbox sync: UID inserted > in the middle of mailbox /var/mail/hartr (8 > 1, seq=2, idx_msgs=4) > Mar 29 09:17:25 bree dovecot: imap(hartr): file mbox-sync-update.c: > line 55 (mbox_sync_move_buffer): assertion failed: (ctx->mail.offset > + ctx->mail.space <= ctx->hdr_offset + pos || ctx->mail.offset > > ctx->hdr_offset + pos + have) > Mar 29 09:17:26 bree dove

[Dovecot] imap processes remaing after dovecot shutdown
by Marten Lehmann 02 Apr '06

02 Apr '06

Hello, I'm using dovecot-1.0.beta3. When I shutdown dovecot (kill -term on the master-pid) the main process disappears, but all the child processes still remain. Why doesn't dovecot kill them as I shutdown the master-process? When I shutdown mysql, all child processes will be shutdown, too. When I shutdown apache, all child processes willbe shutdown, too. Thats what I expect on every application. Usually there is no need to shutdown dovecot. But for some reasons, from time to time 50 and more processes of one user are running and I don't know how else to get rid of them. I don't like to kill the child processes always manually. Ok, it worked once, then stopped working. To get away from maybe it being a thunderbird setup issue, I made a little php script. And now I have an error that didn't show up in the dovecot log even though I have auth_debug and auth_verbose set to yes. Here's what the imap socket returned to the php script: Array ( [0] => Certificate failure for 10.0.0.208: self signed certificate: /OU=IMAP server/CN=imap.example.com/emailAddress=postmaster@example.com ) So, I gotta setup my certificate stuff which I can do, But couldn't this have shown up in the dovecot log somehow? -Charlie ----- On Saturday, April 1, 2006 fishgills(a)fishgills.net wrote: > Turns out some Anti-Virus email scanners don't support TLS. > > Sorry again! [Dovecot] postfix 2.3 SMTP AUTH and Outlook
by Antonin Karasek 01 Apr '06

01 Apr '06

Hi all, I just maked $SUBJECT to run. The main problem was, that in Dovecot are by default enabled only plain digest-md5 and cram-md5 authentication mechanisms. While MS Outlook knows only "LOGIN" mechanism. So, Outlook users wasn't able to use SMTP AUTH. The solution is to change a line in dovecot.conf: mechanisms = plain digest-md5 cram-md5 to: mechanisms = plain digest-md5 cram-md5 login I suggest Timo to change the default configuration, and the page http://wiki.dovecot.org/Authentication -- more precisely the line "LOGIN: Similiar to PLAIN, not very useful. [in 1.0-tests only]" -- I think, that this line is a little confusing. Becouse since one can use Dovecot for SASL authentication, "LOGIN" is starting to be useful (because of the M*S* bullshit). Yeah, I got your latest from your website. Google's top return for you was an older release. Using your .5 I believe it is. For x86_64 of course. It works fine now. ----- On Friday, March 31, 2006 ivazquez(a)ivazquez.net wrote: > On Fri, 2006-03-31 at 16:32 -0800, fishgills(a)fishgills.net wrote: >> After successful testing on our 32-bit machine using the rpm, I'm >> installing dovecot on our Fedora 64-bit machine using that rpm. Are there any how-tos or documentation on getting dovecot to be thunderbird/outlook friendly? Thunderbird can connect about 20% of the time, the other 80% of the time, I Get the error: "You may need to connect via SSL or TLS. Please check the account settings for your mail server." I have my thunderbird setup to do TLS. I've put it on the TLS if available as well, still no love. Dovecot logfile contains: dovecot: Mar 31 17:25:19 Info: imap-login: Aborted login: rip=10.0.0.4, lip=10.0.0.208, TLS dovecot: Mar 31 17:25:24 Info: imap-login: Aborted login: rip=10.0.0.4, lip=10.0.0.208, TLS Nothing else. Thanks in advance! -Charlie
