Hi Clinton, I've come across the same problem several times before - Outlook keeps messing up it's list of seen UIDLs. Try using Thunderbird instead. I moved a load of people in our company to Thunderbird because they kept having that problem and it's not happened for them since. As a matter of interest - I've seen both Outlook and Outlook Express do this on dovecot, mercury/32 and Exchange (when using pop3 for pickup). Hi, A few things regarding logging and libwrap.. a) PAM_RHOST patch Back in July, dean gaudet helpfully posted a patch to dovecot PAM_RHOST the remote IP. Is this going to be included in the main dovecot tree? It seems like a worthwhile addition. The more informative and concise the logging the better. See http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2004-July/004011.html for the original message. b) Better logging Is it possible to get logging of when a client connects and disconnects? I'm very used to seeing this information and it's very useful for debugging user sessions. It's frustrating not being able to easily tell whether a user has opened a connection. Really many of the log messages could be more verbose. For instance, on disconnect, I see imap-login: Disconnected [ip.here] but the username they were logged in as isn't included. It would be nice to have that rather than having to dig back for a login message with the same IP. Heck, even the pid isn't logged. That would be nice too. c) libwrap Any chance of getting libwrap support built into dovecot? Right now I'm running dovecot out of xinetd, so that I can see when tcp connections are opened, and take advantage of tcpwrappers. But this causes the problem that dovecot thinks all connections come from the local host. Correlating logins to IPs gets to be a lot of hassle, with the information divided over so many lines, while needing multiple ways to track which messages from xinetd, dovecot and pam match each other. With some of the minor logging changes (more info on one line, notification of tcp connections), plus libwrap, it'd be much simpler and much more informative. :) Thanks for the great imap server. First of all, thanks for a great product. I've been able to get dovecot up and running with minimum pain. Very nice. Running Fedora Core 2 with postfix using mysql for virtual mailbox config. Got release version of dovecot working with a passwd-file, then I wanted to try it out with using the same mysql db as postfix, so I downloaded test51. Hello Timo, we are using dovcot v0.99.11 under Fedora Core 1. We tested following reproducible action with Outlook 2000 SP3, Outlook XP SP3 and Outlook 2003 SP1: folder test with subfolder test1 test test.test1 choose 'move folder' from the context (right-mouse-click) menu of test choose that we want to move folder test into his subfolder test1 (nonsense action, but quite a few employees trying to do that...) Outlook displays error message subscriptions shows correctly: test test1 BUT the directory structure of maildir is .test.test1.test.test1 .test.test1.test.test1.test Is this a mishap of Dovecot or Outlook? Hi, after the update from wu-imap to dovecot, opening e-mails on the imap server seems slower than with wu-imap. I haven't measured any speed yet, but clicking on a message in a folder takes sometimes a couple of seconds to open the mail. Any ideas or performance tips or information you need? [Dovecot] Crash (segfault) while reading folder headers

Occasionally, while reading the headers of a folder, Dovecot crashes. The visible effect in my mail client is that it will tell me a folder has a new message, but when I click on it, it will take forever to load, and there will be no new messages. When another message comes in to that folder, the folder begins to work again. I generated a core from the latest crash, and the gdb dump is included below. After generating the core file, I removed the .imap.index* files from that folder, and it started working again. I am using Fedora Core 1, with dovecot as an RPM (version dovecot-0.99.10.5-0.FC1). [Dovecot] Filesystem requirements

What are the filesystem requirements for dovecot - for example I see some people are running with atime updates switched off (as I intend to do so myself), so presumably dovecot has no need of an accurate atime implementation. How about directory atime? ctime/mtime etc? I'm intending to run on a linux box using local disk, so am currently considering using reiserfs (3.6) with noatime, nodiratime options since that appeared to work with good performance on the quick benchmark test I tried. I do not have a particularly high opinion of reiserfs reliability, but it normally appears to fail in a all-or-nothing way (ie filesystem unusable) rather than some files going corrupt or missing, so I can work round that with a backup regime. Hi, I'm having some problems with one of my IMAP folders in thunderbird. When creating a new account in thunderbird and importing from my dovecot test51 installation, using maildir - all folders work fine, except one which does not list it's content when I click it When I look on the server, I see all the mails inside the folder, but once I click the folder and ask thunderbird to download the messages - it just doesn't display any mails in it. [Dovecot] Maildir unreliability

Looks like maildir can't be used very realiably without quite a lot of locking. Writing and scanning the directory would have to be locked, but reading wouldn't (as long as the file hasn't been renamed which would require scanning to find it). So much for "no locks needed".. The problem is that opendir()/readdir() may temporarily not return some files if there has been changes in the directory since the opendir(). That means Dovecot thinks a message is expunged, while in fact it really isn't, and the next scan would usually show it again. Currently when that happens, Dovecot usually prints an error message about it and rebuilds indexes. Of course, in real life clients aren't often bombing the same mailbox with tons of changes in multiple connections, which is usually needed to trigger this. I wrote a test program which tests this: http://dovecot.org/tmp/readdir.c I'd like to hear if you can run it in some system without errors. I tested Linux 2.4 and 2.6 with ext2, ext3, xfs and reiser3, Solaris 8/ufs and OpenBSD 3.5/sparc64. Only OpenBSD passed the test, but I'm not sure if it's only because the computer was so slow and didn't switch between processes hard enough. I'd be especially interested about FreeBSD and various NFS systems. If it actually works properly in some systems, I guess I'll make the extra locking configurable.

Well, it's not maildir issue itself, but maildir more or less relies on readdir() not losing renamed files. I'm not sure what you mean by attribute caching, because it's not just with NFS. I'm sure if you point that out to DJB he just says it's not a real problem, because it doesn't happen hardly ever except with some stress test tools, or mailboxes with _many_ simultaneous users. Or maybe with a heavily loaded server. Or ... In any case, I'd rather make Dovecot resistant to this problem entirely rather than hope that everyone uses maildirs only in optimal conditions.

[Dovecot] dovecot and new mail notification for subfolders in Mail.app

Hello, I am using dovecot as an IMAP server to which Mail.app (Apple Mail) connects. However I do not get any notification of new mails in folders other than the inbox, unless I disconnect and reconnect Mail.app or click on the folder with new mail. I'm pretty sure the problem comes from Mail.app. I have searched on Google for how to go around this issue, and have not yet found a solution. If someone here uses Mail.app and dovecot, I'd be really glad to have some advice as to what to do. (by the way, and this is probably related: new folders created in the maildir structure do not get reflected in Mail.app until I disconnect and reconnect). Hi Timo, I am sorry to bug you about this, but I am a bit confused and I have approx 200 users so I don't want to screw this up. I am using the latest FC2 Dovecot RPM: dovecot-0.99.10.5-0.FC2. I am using NFS to mount the /home dirs on the fileserver from the mailserver with mbox. In the docs you said that I should probably use :INDEX=MEMORY. However I think this really pushes the server to its limits with large mailboxes (I have sometimes loads of 8+!). Also I want to use mailaccounts that are shared by users (to multiple users acces the same mailbox simulateously). If I write the index file to a location on the filesystem, will this improve performance and still work with simultaneous logins? Should I upgrade to version 1.00.something because I read somewhere you rewrote the mbox functions? Thanks again, Jonathan

[Dovecot] Period at end of folder in Pine

When using folder-name completion, Pine sticks a period at the end of dovecot mediated IMAP folder names. This is invalid, of course, and I end up having to backspace the period to use the proper name. Anyone have a clue on a workaround? I'd imagine this is a FAQ type issue.... Thanks, Doug

Hi all, i'm setting up mail server and here is the question: if, for example "firstname.lastname(a)domain.com" is e-mail address, then how can i setup login as "firstname.lastname" and "password" not only "firstname". Of course, users want all things simple. But i don't want to use login names longer than 8 chars. Any ideas? Or should i try to create users as "firstname.lastname" in /etc/passwd file ?? Gasha

Hello, Thanks to much help from Timo Sirainen, I now have a running dovecot on my Mac, that works great both with mutt and Mail.app. I'm going to have a lot of mail stored there (about 40000 messages for 1.4GB in 30 folders), and I was wondering if it was better (in terms of performance and stability) to directly access the mail using the maildir hierarchy, or access it using local IMAP. [Dovecot] default_mail_env problems

I am having problems setting the default mail environment.# I am using Fedora Core 2 with version dovecot-0.99.10.5-0.FC2 My users all have an NFS mounted home directory, and all mail is delivered to ~Mail/.mailbox it is all mbox format. I would like to put the indexes on the local system in /var/indexes/{username}. So I set these parameters for default_mail_env : mbox:~/Mail/:INBOX=~/Mail/.mailbox Which produced the error : imap(test): stat() failed with mbox file ~/Mail/.mailbox: No such file or directory I set the mail environment back to default, linked inbox to .mailbox in the ~/Mail directory and all worked fine. Is there a better way to do this ? I would like to put the indexes on the local system in /var/indexes/{username}, so I decided to set: default_mail_env = INDEX=/var/indexes/%d/%n and got this error: imap(test): Failed to create storage with data: INDEX=/var/indexes//test dovecot: child 9142 (imap) returned error 89 I also tried : default_mail_env = INDEX=/var/indexes/%u And got the same error. I guessed at permissions, so I tried changing the ownership to dovecot and then test and then root and then 777, but I still get this error. Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong? [Dovecot] imap idle on non-inbox?

Can this be done with dovecot? I really like the imap idle feature, but it doesn't work for me because I sort my mail into folders with procmail, so it only notifies me when one drops into inbox and not a subfolder. Is there just an option for this I'm missing, or does support for this not exist yet? Also, I don't think its a client issue as I watched the traffic with tcpdump and it only announced anything for inbox, messages dropping into other folders caused no traffic. -- Collin Grady BOFH excuse #347: The rubber band broke

Hello. I am currently testing dovecot (0.99.10.8, Debian woody from backports), with the maildir storage. I have noticed that when I use the mailutil tool from uw-imap distribution to transfer my IMAP mailboxes from our current server (uw-imap, mbx format) to the dovecot one, the mails arrival time are apparently lost. I can see this in Pine, using the Arrival sort: the mailboxes on the originating server and dovecot server are not ordered the same. If I use the mb2md perl script to transfer the same mailbox, I see the same behaviour. Is this normal ? Thanks. -- Nicolas

HI, I recently upgraded an wu-imap server to dovecot dovecot-0.99.11-1.FC3.3 without big trouble (the subscribed mailboxes had to be added by hand...) But today users told me that there where some problems; e.g. a user tried to delete a message and got this error: Oct 19 09:43:13 mail imap(jmeinken): File isn't in mbox format: /home/mitarbeiter/jmeinken//Trash This didn't happen before; also after the migration. My questions: - Whats wrong? - Why is there the "//" a "more Trash" failed. After deleting this file and "touching" a new one, the user can delete files. The quota is 150 MB, the usere uses 100 MB at the moment. Any ideas? Hello, I am new to Dovecot and trying to setup on my Fedora Core 1 mail servers (actually migrating from uw to dovecot ;-) ). In my setup I use pam to authenticate virtual users. All the usernames include @domainname in their usernames like 'jane(a)somevhost.com'. Now path to user's home and INBOX includes /home/vhosts/<domainname>/home/<username>. I have added following to dovecot.conf. ------------------------ auth_passdb = pam auth_verbose = yes auth_username_chars = default_mail_env = mbox:/home/vhosts/%d/%h/:INBOX=/home/vhosts/%d/var/spool/mail/%n -------------------------- Now if I try to connect imap I get foll. error. -- imap(jane): May 19 01:58:08 Error: mkdir_parents(/home/vhosts///home/jane//.imap/INBOX) failed: Permission denied -- So %h and %u looks working but not %d :(. My pam module works right as if I use actual domain path in dovecot.conf everything works fine. Auth works correctly with uw. Any pointers ? TIA, Pythonic

Code which supports cyrus SASL library (src/auth/mech-cyrus-sasl2.c) is broken. Following is the workaround patch for Dovecot Rel 0.99.11, and it worked fine on FreeBSD 4.10 BOX. It will not work with current development version. Application for that version might not be so difficult. Recently I found the CVS log which appeals that cyrus SASL support is discontinued. Hi, I installed dovecot from dovecot-1.0-test51 with this configure line: ./configure --with-mysql --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var --with-ssldir=/etc/ssl --with-ssl=openssl When I add this to my dovecot.conf: passdb = mysql /etc/dovecot-mysql.conf I get this in /var/log/maillog when I run "dovecot -c /etc/dovecot.conf": Oct 21 13:59:16 one dovecot: Dovecot v1.0-test51 starting up Oct 21 13:59:17 one dovecot: Auth process died too early - shutting down Oct 21 13:59:17 one dovecot: auth(default): Unknown userdb type 'mysql' Oct 21 13:59:17 one dovecot: child 13203 (auth) returned error 89 After my ./configure was complete it was also noted that mysql would be built into dovecot as passwd and userdb, so MySQL should be in there. [Dovecot] Problems with thunderbird

I'm running dovecot-1.0-test50 on openbsd 3.4 and it's working great, exept with thunderbird. Everything works fine with squirrelmail. The instant i log in with thunderbird the imap process goes up to 100% cpu, and instantly goes back down to 0 when i log out. I configured dovecot with the following arguments: --with-vpopmail --with-storages=maildir --without-passwd --without-passwd-file --without-static --without-pop3d --with-mysql --disable-ipv6 --with-ssl=openssl --without-checkpassword --without-bsdauth --without-static-userdb I'm usig the sql as auth, with vpopmail. I've also tried 1.0-test19, test46, 47, 48 and 49. Going to try 0.9.11 now, but in the 0.9-series i've had huge problems with indexes becoming fucked up every couple of hours. Hi, I'm using procmail to deliver my mail to my maildir boxes, that are watched by dovecot, and I configured mutt to use imap to access these boxes. After installing a more recent procmail (the default one from Apple has a bug with "/" in the filenames, so I used the one from Fink), I sent myself a message, which was delivered correctly to Maildir/.INBOK/new (I can see the file there). However, I cannot see this file from mutt. I think it is dovecot that is not seeing it, as I tried quitting and restarting mutt. So my question is: how can I tell dovecot that it should check the mailboxes, and is there a way to make it do so regularly? Or is my problem from somewhere else? Hi, I'm trying to install dovecot on Mac OS X, and I'm having trouble to make it run. If someone could point me to what I'm doing wrong or suggest some documentation to read, I'd be very glad (I've search the wiki for Mac OS X specific documentation, but could not find any). I installed dovecot using darwinports. The version installed is 0.99.10.5. (It's running well enough to tell me that when I do a: sudo /opt/local/sbin/dovecot --version ;-) Before trying to tweak the configuration file, I wanted first to get dovecot to run. When I first launched it, it told me that there was no dovecot user. [Dovecot] Subscription problem with various clients

Hi, I'm a newbie with dovecot but i managed to install it and it's running great except i have this weird problem when trying to subscribe folders. I can subscribe to one folder at the time (for example inbox + sent), but if i try to subscribe an other directory client (tried with outlook express 6, Mozilla Thunderbird 0.8, Iloha Webmail) automaticly unsubscribes other directories. I've tried to search a solution for this problem without success. Please help. I'm using Dovecot 0.99.10.2 on FreeBSD 5.0

[Dovecot] test49 "killed with signal 6" errors...

I upgraded yesterday from 1.0test46 to 1.0test49 in an attempt to eliminate an error that a couple of my users were getting. Both users were using Thunderbird 0.6 over imaps, and were getting errors that said: "The current command didn't succeed. The mail server responded: Error in IMAP command UID: Invalid Body [..] Parameter: Missing '>'in'<14336-13057>'. When the user would click the Okay button on the e-mail client error message, the message would be delivered as normal. There wasn't any entry in the system logs about this that I could find. Googling didn't turn up anything concrete. I decided to upgrade to the latest test49 version. Now the same users are getting occasional e-mails that will not display, and I'm getting the follwing in the logs: 2004-10-20 09:48:51.854386500 mail.info: Oct 20 09:48:51 dovecot: imap-login: Login: jgarcia [69.146.158.154] 2004-10-20 09:49:13.195974500 mail.err: Oct 20 09:49:13 dovecot: IMAP(jgarcia): Trying to allocate 0 bytes 2004-10-20 09:49:13.197151500 mail.err: Oct 20 09:49:13 dovecot: child 14738 (imap) killed with signal 6 I upgraded one of the users to the latest Thunderbird with no change. But, if I have them go through our web interface (horde/imp) the same message displays just fine. The mail server is OpenBSD 3.6 -current. Dovecot is built with the following configuration: ./configure --sysconfdir=/etc \ --with-ssl=openssl \ --with-pam=NO \ --with-ldap=no \ --with-vpopmail=no \ --with-rawlog I added the --with-rawlog switch yesterday and created a dovecot.rawlog folder in the Maildirs but nothing seems to be logged.
