[Dovecot] Maildir/mbox on a per-user basis
by Jon Nathan 03 Dec '04

03 Dec '04

Hello, The Wiki indicates that Dovecot can do either mbox or Maildir on a per-user basis: default_mail_env can be overridden in userdb for each user. This works with userdbs supporting the "mail" attribute (eg. passwd-file, SQL, LDAP). How exactly does one do this for passwd-file? Thanks, -Jon -- Jon Nathan jon(a)rupture.net

[Dovecot] master or client
by Kirill Miazine 03 Dec '04

03 Dec '04

Hello, Dovecot auth protocol 1.0 defines differend command sets for client and master. How can a daemon distinguish a master connection from a client connection? Clients do send CPID and master does not. I have following auth configuration: auth external { socket connect { master { path = /var/state/dovecot/login/master-auth } } } I try to learn my authentication daemon to learn to speak with Dovecot. I fire up my master.py and try to login via pop3 as foo:bar. Below is what my master.py receives from Dovecot (master and client), VERSION commands are not shown: km@thinkpad:/home/km > ./krot/sbin/master.py CPID : ['11915'] CPID : ['11915'] CPID : ['16652'] CPID : ['11915'] AUTH : ['1', 'PLAIN', 'service=POP3', 'secured', 'lip=127.0.0.1', 'rip=127.0.0.1', 'resp=AGZvbwBiYXI='] REQUEST : ['9', '11915', '1'] CPID : ['16652'] (In the above output command and parameters are parsed.) The protocol specification is mentioning a separate SERVICE command in the client's greeting. I can't let my daemon die if the master issues DIE. Why should a server exit when it receives DIE? Can anybody provide an example dialog of an authentication request that is successful and a reques that fails because of a bad password. Thanks, Kirill -- They make a desert and call it peace. -- Tacitus

[Dovecot] pop3 with lmos results in multiple downloads
by Juerd 03 Dec '04

03 Dec '04

One of our users wants to use POP3 with leave-mail-on-server (LMOS). That's great and works well for most people. But for some reason, they MUA (outlook) downloads messages more than once. As the MUA asks for messages, I'm sure it's Outlook's fault, but I was wondering if there is anything that can be done about this on the servern side, or if anyone knows how to fix Outlook. I'm sending this here, because they report that with non-dovecot servers it does work correctly. They do not want IMAP, because they want to use Outlook, which cannot support both Exchange and IMAP simultaneously. This user has multiple accounts, and only for some of them things go wrong. A temporary fix is to remove the mail from the server once, but after a few more messages arrive, the problem starts all over again. Please help. Regards, Juerd

[Dovecot] Problem getting incoming mail to IMAP inbox
by Jeff Sutherland 03 Dec '04

03 Dec '04

I have dovecot-0.99.10.5 on Fedora Core 2 installed and otherwise operating using Maildir format for the folders, Kmail as the email client. Got through all the ssl and other security configuration fine, but have one last problem: I can't read the incoming mail from /var/spool/mail/%u. Tried several 'default_mail_env' settings, including none at all, to no avail. When I try to check in new mail to the inbox, the only messages are "Transmission Complete, no new messages" Tried this setting for example: default_mail_env = maildir:~/Maildir/:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u but to no avail. Is something getting cocked up because the folders are all in maildir format and the incoming mail spool is in mbox format? I checked permissions, they seem ok. Kmail can pull the messages in just fine to its local folder inbox, it just seems that dovecot can't read the mail spool file for some reason. All the other maildir folders work fine. ????????? [Dovecot] Cannot list mailbox
by Fawad Halim 03 Dec '04

03 Dec '04

Hi, I have dovecot 0.99.11 on a Linux machine running against a maildir based mailbox. I am getting the following errors in the maillog: Nov 27 23:08:14 fawad3 imap(fawad): file imap-bodystructure.c: line 278 (part_parse_headers): assertion failed: (part->physical_pos >= input->v_offset - start_offset) Nov 27 23:08:14 fawad3 dovecot: child 14202 (imap) killed with signal 6 This happens when the mail reader tries to enumerate the messages in the INBOX. I am able to read the messages whose headers have already been cached by the mail reader. It is also able to read others folders without any problem. This problem has occured before, and I was able to get rid of it by identifying the junk mail message it was dying on. In this case, however, I'm not able to figure out which message is causing it to crash. I am able to read the same maildir in mutt, and Courier IMAP doesn't seem to have trouble with it either. I'd really appreciate if someone could tell me what I can do to get around this problem. Regards -fawad

Dovecot is running on RHEL 3, on top of Redhat/Sistina GFS (clustered filesystem.) Currently I'm keeping it on one node to avoid possible GFS locking issues. I'm running with mmap_disabled=yes, mbox format. Most of the 1.0-test builds I have done eventually corrupt their index files, and show strange behavior (click on a message in the folder view, and an entirely different message opens... delete three or four messages and expunge, the messages instantly reappear as unseen.). I typically wipe the .imap directories between different builds of Dovecot. I've been following the -test code for a couple of months now, just to see how it does, because we're running UW IMAPd and are excited to have a way to increase the performance of our mail cluster (indexes) without having to move away from mbox. Let me know if there's more information I could provide that would be helpful. Jim

[Dovecot] Excessive imap_login processes
by Keith Edmunds 02 Dec '04

02 Dec '04

I'm running Dovecot on a very small mail server (never more than six users accessing IMAP, often fewer). I'm seeing the number of imap_login processes grow over time, and right now there are 23. All the "login_process_*" settings in dovecot.conf are commented (ie, at their defaults). Is this a known or expected issue? The version of Dovecot is 0.99.10.8, which I accept is perhaps a little old. Thanks, Keith

Hi, because the fedora project switcht from wu imap to dovecot, i followed this step. Today I'm very unhappy about this step, because there are more problems for me than advantages... But today the biggest problem is, that a lot!!! of mailboxes are damaged. within three year no mailbox was damaged using wu imap. The errormessage is: imap(cstrang): File isn't in mbox format: /var/mail/cstrang the server is fedora core 1, dovecot-0.99.11. May be I have something misconfigured, but where to look at? by Nicolas.Kowalski＠imag.fr 30 Nov '04

Hello. I am using dovecot-1.0-test53 with Maildir mailstore, with pine 4.61 as MUA. I have several folders which cause error messages like 'Junk in start of group' in Pine when I read them. I googled a bit for this, and found that removing the index file should do the trick, but unfortunately, it does not. What can I do to make these annoying messages disappear ? [Dovecot] Entourage on Dovecot 09.11, is 1.0-test the answer?
by Michael Maggard 30 Nov '04

30 Nov '04

Background: I'm running a RH9 box with Dovecot 0.99.11. Dovecot was installed using yum and the rpm found on http://dag.wieers.com/packages/dovecot/. With two exceptions I've been enormously happy with Dovecot. I'm even happier having recently successfully installed pop-before-smtp sop one exception down. However the other problem I've experienced is becoming critical. I've an ongoing issue with MS Entourage clients, a MS for Mac product, unable to authenticate to Dovecot. This had been attributed to MacOS 9/MS Entourage 2001 but with new systems in place I'm having the same issue with MacOS X/MS Entourage 2004 being unable to authenticate to Dovecot. MS acknowledges the issue in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/871016 with the errata: > 5 Known issues > 5.1 NTLM v1 authentication support > Entourage no longer supports NTLM v1 authentication. Entourage does support NTLM v2. Where I am now: There has been previous references to an Entourage authentication issue on the mailing list but it was resolved by "after I tried everything else with no success, upgrading from Dovecot 0.99.10.2 to 0.99.10.4 solved the problem." Well, I'm at 0.99.11 so apparently this is back, or something else is going on. >From several hours going over the mailing list it appears that Dovecot 1.0-test is the solution with it's extended NTLM support. However I'm not a very sophisticated sysadmin and so it was with trepidation I downloaded dovecot-1.0-test52 and started following the instructions. After a quick "yum install openssl-development" I thought I was good to go but alas "./configure --with-ssl=openssl" resulted in: > ./configure: line 26374: pkg-config: command not found > checking for SSL_read in -lssl... yes > checking openssl/ssl.h usability... no > checking openssl/ssl.h presence... no > checking for openssl/ssl.h... no > checking openssl/err.h usability... yes > checking openssl/err.h presence... yes > checking for openssl/err.h... Yes and make failed with a cascade of errors after: > In file included from /usr/include/openssl/ssl.h:179, > from ssl-proxy-openssl.c:14: > /usr/include/openssl/kssl.h:72:18: krb5.h: No such file or directory Why I'm posting: So, hoping I've given enough detail to be useful, here are my questions: * Am I correct that MS Entourage 2004 can't authenticate with Dovecot .99.11? Are there folks it does work for (how)? * Am I correct that Dovecot-1.0-test has support for NTLMv2 and would thus authenticate MS Entourage 2004? * Does anyone have a prebuilt (yum suitable) rpm of a recent Dovecot 1.0-test for RH9? Dag appears to only carry released versions, is there a source for -test ones? * Is there something trivial I'm overlooking in trying to build dovecot-1.0-test52? I'm assuming I'm missing /usr/include/openssl/kssl.h, is this correct? Any assistance is greatly appreciated. I was pushing my skillset getting pop-before-smtp working. While I'm good at following directions and learning from them I'm just that; learning. -- Michael <michael(a)michaelmaggard.com>

[Dovecot] test53 and signal 11 errors
by Sean Porter 30 Nov '04

30 Nov '04

I installed test53 tonight, and I've begun to see the following error in my maillog every time I attempt to retrieve mail from an imap client: dovecot: child 46128 (imap) killed with signal 11 I built from source on FreeBSD 4.9 with the following: ./configure --with-mysql --with-storages=maildir --with-ssl=openssl A little bit of Googling seems to indicate that this is a hardware issue(http://www.bitwizard.nl/sig11/), but I've not had this error under any other circumstances. What other information would be helpful to sort this out?

by Timo Sirainen 29 Nov '04

29 Nov '04

http://dovecot.org/test/ Sorry for not answering any questions for past two weeks, I'll try to get around answering them in next few days. I've also been thinking about if I should switch from CVS to Darcs. It seems to be exactly the kind of reversion control tool I had wanted to use. Anyone have comments for or against it? I'd still have read-only CVS repository generated from it, although I couldn't yet find a way to do it. Anyway, test53: - Recent flag counters should finally be correct - dovecot-shared file actually works correctly now - Cache file works with mmap_disable = yes (still some small issues though) - Lots of internal changes in indexing code, especially for mmap_disable = yes - DIGEST-MD5 authentication works again - etc. It's been running with me for 45mins without breaking. Guess it should work. :)

[Dovecot] Orientation and configuration help
by J Moore 29 Nov '04

29 Nov '04

This sounds to me like a "RTFM" question, but I've read the Wiki, and looked through the m.l. archives as far back as July... I still don't have a clear answer, so I'm posting here :/ I'm currently using mutt as my mail client. It runs on the same host that runs the sendmail MTA for my domain. So sendmail "delivers" my mail to /var/mail/<username>, and I read it from that location w/ mutt, transferring the "new" mail to a folder in my home directory if I want to save it (/home/<username>/Mail/<foldername>). This arrangement has been convenient, useful and reasonably secure (I think): I can check mail from anywhere via SSH, and I don't have to worry about downloading virus-laden spam/shit to my Windoze (corporate) laptop. Now, I want to change; I want to use dovecot to provide IMAP access to my mail. I'd like to do this in such a way that I can still access mail using mutt when I want/need to do so. I've installed dovecot, and reviewed /etc/dovecot.conf. I think I need to do the following to get underway: 1) create a directory for Maildir-formatted folders: mkdir /home/<username>/Maildir 2) start the dovecot daemon Is that it? Will dovecot "take over" from mutt, and put mail in my home directory? Or do I need to configure sendmail to deliver to dovecot? Also, there are other users/email accounts on the mail server that I would like to leave "as-is". Over time, I may want to migrate them to dovecot as well, but I'm reluctant to switch everything over until I've had a chance to evaluate it. Should I run dovecot as a "rootless" installation to get it for a single user, or should I just set my single UID in dovecot.conf? Thanks, Jay

[Dovecot] Which is the imap root directory? Conflicting documentation...
by Tom 29 Nov '04

29 Nov '04

So, which is the imap root directory? I am getting conflicting definitions from the documentation (copied below)... ------------------------ mbox storage requires detecting INBOX location and IMAP root directory. If MAIL environment points to file (+rw) it's treated as the INBOX file. If it points to directory (+rwx) which contains .imap/ (+rwx), inbox (+rw) or mbox (+rw) it's treated as IMAP root directory. If INBOX isn't known, imap_root/inbox file is used by default. If root directory isn't known, we try to find it from /, ~/mail or ~/Mail. Files created by Dovecot ------------------------ .subscriptions: One folder per line listing subscribed IMAP folders. There's only one of these files in the root mail directory (~/Maildir/ or ~/mail/.imap/). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------ My .subscription file is located in ~/mail/ but the documentation states only one should be in ~/mail/.imap/ !!!! [Dovecot] SASL authentication
by Tom Allison 29 Nov '04

29 Nov '04

I was browsing the wiki and found a section on what appears to be as close to "exactly what I'm looking for" as I've seen in a long time. http://wiki.dovecot.org/moin.cgi/DovecotPostgresql However, I'm not inclined to do very much "blind" configuration on my machines without first understanding the what/why of it all. My theory is that this helps me with the RTFM syndromes later. Hopefully. My current dovecot installation is based on pgsql authentication with a single domain and files being placed in a $HOME. It's as if it were /etc/passwd based, but the passwords are different. I would very much like to migrate this into a system which supports multiple domains and this Wiki seems to be the best means for that. However, I didn't use SASL authentication. I was emotionally scarred trying to use SASL with a venture with Cyrus-IMAP under different circumstances. Could someone explain why SASL is a good thing in this case? Does it allow for something more, lead into future developements? Most of the rest of this general paper I do understand, but the SASL is the only part where I'm not sure if I must do that, want to do that, or can live without it.

[Dovecot] NFS, test52, maildir, freebsd 4.x and OS X (Panther) Server
by Sean Porter 29 Nov '04

29 Nov '04

I've been working on setting up a Dovecot server with a maildir mailboxes stored over NFS. Initially, everything was working great, and then I started seeing this error as previously discussed on the list in my maillog: (mail_index_expunge): assertion failed: (!t->view->external) Timo, in another thread, suggested to remove line 247 in mail-index-transaction.c in the test52 source, which I blithely ignored as I thought this would remove only the error message from the logfile and not fix the problem. At Mark Lidstone's helpful off-list insistence I did remove the line, recompile, and everything did seem to be working, until I encountered a different error. I started doing some light load testing from multiple clients (essentially, clicking like a rabid monkey on Get Mail in Thunderbird and hitting different mailbox links in Squirrelmail as the same user) and started running into this error in the logs: Nov 22 20:10:46 server dovecot: IMAP(mailuser(a)example.com): rename(/host/mail/mailboxes/mailuser(a)example.com/dovecot-uidlist.lock, /host/mail/mailboxes/mailuser(a)example.com/dovecot-uidlist) failed: Input/output error Nov 22 20:10:46 server dovecot: IMAP(mailuser(a)example.com): file_dotlock_replace(/host/mail/mailboxes/mailuser(a)example.com/dovecot- uidlist) failed: Input/output error Oddly, the dovecot-uidlist.lock file was unremovable on the NFS server (OS X Panther Server) with a simple 'rm', so I started digging into things a little further. It seems that the OS X NFS code is based on the FreeBSD 5.x codebase. The server that Dovecot (and my NFS client) lives on is FreeBSD 4.x, which doesn't support NFS locking at all(incidentally, the FreeBSD NFS Server is apparently incompatible with Linux NFS clients as well -- nice!). Per the suggestion in http://www.dovecot.org/doc/nfs.txt I'd already been storing my index files locally, but it appeared that the control files were somehow blowing up, even with NFS-safe dotlocking. All hope was nearly lost when I came across this tidbit in a post from Timo(http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2003-May/001489.html): - :CONTROL=dir in default_mail_env can specify where to save dovecot-uidlist and .customflags files. Useful for above problems. I then changed my dovecot.conf to retreive the mailboxes from the NFS mount, but store the indexes and the control files locally: default_mail_env = maildir:/host/mail/mailboxes/%u:INDEX=/home/dovecot/%u/indexes: CONTROL=/home/dovecot/%u/control All seems well so far. I know this is a relatively unique setup, but I thought it might help some of the other people that are running into NFS-related issues. [Dovecot] AppleMail causes dovecot error: file mbox-rewrite.c: line 429 assertion failed
by Adam Rosi-Kessel 29 Nov '04

29 Nov '04

I get the following error message in my syslog frequently when a user accesses the dovecot (IMAP) server from his OS X AppleMail client: Nov 24 09:45:42 myhost imap(someuser): file mbox-rewrite.c: line 429 (mbox_write_header): assertion failed: (hdr_parsed_size.physical_size == hdr_size) Nov 24 09:45:42 myhost dovecot: child 23277 (imap) killed with signal 6 Usually each message appears 5-6 times. The user on the other end doesn't notice any problems. Any idea why this occurs and what I can do to prevent it? I'm using dovecot from Debian sid, 0.99.11-3. Otherwise a fairly standard configuration. -- Adam Rosi-Kessel http://adam.rosi-kessel.org

[Dovecot] Runtime root directory
by Brad Robel-Forrest 29 Nov '04

29 Nov '04

I'm considering modifying the Dovecot source to support a runtime designation for the root directory instead of relying on the prefix provided via configure. Once complete, it would be possible to move the root directory around somewhat ad-hoc after installation without having to rebuild the source. The primary driver for this is that I'd like to wrap a binary build of Dovecot within an OSX application bundle. These bundles can be placed anywhere the user desires, so Dovecot couldn't rely on a particular build-defined root directory. Before I get too far down the path, I'd like to know if there's a desire for this type of enhancement. If so, I'd like to provide a diff that would meet any other requirements for this change. There are two methods I was considering. Feel free to suggest a better alternative as I'm not ecstatic about either at the moment. 1. Find and change all uses of the prefix directory to instead prepend a value obtained from the environment (say, DOVECOT_ROOT_DIR). 2. Find and change all uses of the prefix directory to instead prepend a value obtained from the configuration file (say, a new setting called "dovecot_root_dir"). In either case, if the value was not available or not a valid directory, I would fall back to the build prefix. I would also make this functionality optional via configure--defaulted "off". -brad

[Dovecot] Dovecot 1.0-test52 and LDAP authentication
by Jonathan Salomon 26 Nov '04

26 Nov '04

Hi all! I have upgraded Dovecot 0.99.11 installation that's worked with LDAP to Dovecot 1.0-test52 and I can't get LDAP to work. I noticed the /etc/dovecot.conf is slightly different, so I have adjusted changes. If I use the standard auth (passw & pam) everything works fine, however when I user ldap for auth Dovecot starts but then dies: dovecot: Nov 26 14:14:36 Error: Auth process died too early - shutting down dovecot: Nov 26 14:14:36 Error: child 16454 (auth) killed with signal 11 As far as I can tell the /etc/dovecot-ldap.conf hasn't changed since 0.99.11 and the LDAP server is working properly. What is happening here? I did a 'strace -f dovecot 2>log' because I saw this in the mailing list archive, but it doesn't really tell me anything, so I have someone can tell me what is happening here. I have included the tail below. Thank you in advance! [Dovecot] [OT] Apple Mail.app access to localhost imap when no network
by Alan Schmitt 25 Nov '04

25 Nov '04

Hello, Sorry for the offtopic subject, but I tried asking this on some Apple mailing lists and could not find an answer there, and as it's related to imap (provided by dovecot), someone might know something about this. The problem is the following: I have a local IMAP server provided by dovecot, so that I can store my mail in maildir format, and read it both using mutt and Apple Mail.app. Mail.app is configured to access localhost:143 to access mail. However, I discovered that when there is no network connection (no ethernet cable plugged in and no wifi network), Mail.app is saying that it's working in disconnected mode and refuses to access the imap server. Would someone have a suggestion as to what to do to allow connected access to localhost when no network is present? I'm very new to OS X (I come from Linux). Thanks a lot, Alan Schmitt

Nope, just sticking with simple pop3 at this point ;-) The second issue I am having is that Thunderbird seems to 'freeze' from time to time on directories that have more than 1000 messages in them. I remember reading earlier that there were some performance tweaks for Thunderbird, but I lost the link :-( I cannot replicate the authentication problem, and will wait to see if it is a layer 8 protocol error (between the ears). [Dovecot] Cannot see contents of ~/mail folder
by Saurabh Barve 25 Nov '04

25 Nov '04

Hi, I just installed dovecot-0.99 on my Fedora Core 2 machine. When I start the secure IMAP daemon, I am able to see my Inbox, but not the other folders in the 'mail' folder in my home directory (sent-mail, saved-messages, etc.) These folders were created when I was using pine earlier on the machine. In my dovecot.conf file, I have set: default_mail_env = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u I am using Mozilla Mail as my mail client, if that makes a difference. Dovecot seems to be creating a directory called .imap inside the 'mail' folder, where it is storing the inbox and a Trash folder. I have set "mail_full_filesystem_access = no" so that users don't access any of their other files except the mail folder. From what I understand, I don't have to set IMAP path in Mozilla Mail. I tried doing that too, just to try it out, but as expected, it didn't work. What do I need to set in order to see my other folders in the 'mail' directory? [Dovecot] Error in IMAP command GETACL: Unknown command..
by Ingo Lantschner (Lists) 24 Nov '04

Hi all, I have just installed dovecot on my Fedora Core 2 box. I would like to use it only for reading archived email from within my Mozilla 1.7.3. I syminked my old opera-files (*.mbs whoch seems to be same as mbox) into ~/mail. Seems to work fine, mostly I can open the mailfiles - sometimes it hangs with the following error: The current command did not succeed. The mailserver responded: Error in IMAP command GETACL: Unknown command.. And then: The current command did not succeed. The mailserver responded: Error in IMAP command MYRIGHTS: Unknown command.. ALthough I searched in Google and in the Wiki on dovecot, I did not find any hint - am I the first with this problem? "localhost" does resolve (I tried to ping it, and it worked), and 127.0.0.1 does not change anything. So I guess my initial guess was wrong, and Mail must be trying to see if the network is up before even trying to log in. Alan Schmitt

[Dovecot] .INBOX required?
by Todd Slater 19 Nov '04

19 Nov '04

Hi, Newbie to Dovecot and IMAP in general. The system in question is RH 9, Dovecot 0.99.11, Maildir, accessing mail with SquirrelMail, Thunderbird, Kmail, Mutt, Entourage and Mail.app. I've set up the maildir for users in ~/Maildir. Inside that I have other folders, .Sent, .Drafts, .Trash, .Junk, .MakeJunk, .MakeGood. ~/Maildir itself has the cur, new, and tmp folders, but I note that there is also an .INBOX folder. Mail to the account does end up in ~/Maildir/new and it's readable in the various MUA's (as Inbox). I'm just not certain why the .INBOX is there, and if I'm supposed to be creating the other folders as .INBOX.otherfolder. Thanks, Todd

[Dovecot] [PATCH] add initial response support for NTLM and RPA
by Andrey Panin 19 Nov '04

19 Nov '04

Hello, this patch adds initial response support for NTLM and RPA authentication mechanism. It can be useful if dovecot acts as authentication backend for SMTP server. RFC2554 permits initial response in AUTH command, so it's legal to send NTLM type 1 message or RPA token 1 in it. Please consider applying. Best regards. -- Andrey Panin | Linux and UNIX system administrator pazke(a)donpac.ru | PGP key: wwwkeys.pgp.net

[Dovecot] noob - Outlook Duplicate Problem Question
by Jeff Ramsey 17 Nov '04

17 Nov '04

Hi, I use dovecot 0.99-11 with sendmail latest, and clamav-milter, and spamass-milter. Whole setup works great. We only use dovecot for pop3, no imap. We use primarily Outlook 2000-2003 for a client. I have a couple of users who prefer to leave a copy of each message on the server. I read the archives about the Outlook Duplicate Message problem regarding the setting 'Leave a copy on the Server'. I read that someone fixed this by changing the order of the UIDL from datestamp.message# to message#.datestamp. My question is if I make that change in my source for 0.99-11, will the 1.0 version have a fix for this included, or should I look for another pop3 server? I'd like to continue to use dovecot as it is very light and fast, but I'm trying to eliminate using source compiled binaries on my production servers, and letting YUM do my updates for me. I can compile this version from source, using the fix that was mentioned in the September Archives for this list, if I know that the problem (which is an MS problem, go figure) will be gone in future RPM binary packages. Thanks for any info or help. Jeff Ramsey MIS Administrator Tubafor Mill, Inc.

[Dovecot] 1.0-test52
by Timo Sirainen 16 Nov '04

16 Nov '04

http://dovecot.org/test/ I have very high hopes that mbox support is finally stable in this version. I've been running some stress tests for an hour now without it breaking (well, there are two potential problems but I think they were just fixing previous breakages). Before it took only a few minutes at most to break. - fixes several mbox syncing problems, especially expunges potentially deleted parts of wrong messages - maildir: readdir() race conditions are fixed by keeping dovecot-uidlist lock a bit more than before (it really doesn't matter in most cases, we did this before as well but slightly less often. so this really fixes just the problematic cases without giving hardly any more overhead than there was before) - index header changed a bit. will rebuild indexes and print some cache indexid errors.. i should hide these errors too.. - fixed memory leaks in dovecot-auth

[Dovecot] dovecot and outlook express and large messages
by Daniel 16 Nov '04

Hi I have been using Dovecot 0.99.11 and 1.0-test52 on a server with about 2000 accounts. All has been working good until a few days ago. Now I'm stuck and can't work out whats going on. The problem seems to be only with Outlook/outlook express clients. If the mail is large with an attachment its fails. After you hit the send and receive button after a while Outlook express gives the error "Your POP3 server has not responded in 60 seconds". Network activity seem to be minimal between the client and the server. There is no log entry out of the ordinary to say what went wrong. I have tried out a number of changes to the dovecot.conf file, none make any difference. Thanks for any help. Regards Daniel Rowe

[Dovecot] eudora issue
by kent crispin 16 Nov '04

16 Nov '04

There seems to be a protocol mismatch between eudora and dovecot when using pop. The login interchange with, for example, mozilla, is as follows: MO: [connects] DC: +OK dovecot ready. MO: CAPA DC: +OK DC: CAPA DC: TOP DC: USER DC: UIDL DC: RESP-CODES DC: STLS DC: SASL PLAIN DC: . MO: USER yyy DC: +OK MO: PASS xxxxxxxx DC: +OK Logged in. But with eudora, with apparently equivalent configuration, the sequence is as follows: EU: [connects] DC: +OK dovecot ready. EU: CAPA DC: +OK DC: CAPA DC: TOP DC: USER DC: UIDL DC: RESP-CODES DC: STLS DC: SASL PLAIN DC: . EU: auth PLAIN AG1tcgBtaXN0bGV0b2U= DC: -ERR Unsupported authentication mechanism. At this point eudora reports an error back to the user, and the connection fails. Can anyone shed any light on this? Is it just that there is an incompatibility in how eudora and dovecot view the protocol? Or is there some configuration option I need to tweak to make things work? Thanks for any help. [Dovecot] RE: dovecot and outlook express and large messages
by Daniel 16 Nov '04

16 Nov '04

Hi Dose dovecot have problem working on a eth0:1 alias type interfaces? I just wondering if this could be my problem? Dovecot would do the authentication correctly and send small email but as soon as any load was put on it like downloading a mail with a large attachment it would fail. All network traffic would stop. No errors in the logs. As soon as I move the service to listen on a non alias interface eth0 all works fine. Very strange. I have taken a good look at our server to check that is not anything. I'm pretty sure we are good. I have also rebooted the box to see if that would fixed it which it didn't. Regards Daniel

[Dovecot] dovecot with different POP3S / IMAPS Certs

Hi, I'm new to dovecot, but actually planning to switch a wide WU-IMAP/POP installation to dovecot. With WU-IMAP, a different certificate can be used by pop3s and imaps, allowing both server to be reachable through different hostnames, without SSL complaints on the client side; this is mostly used for scalability. I'm trying to do the same thing with dovecot; that is having dovecot using a different certificate for it's pop3s instance and imaps instance. Unfortunately, in dovecot configuration file, only one certificate can be set; used by both pop3s / imaps. Any idea of the best way to handle this ? Thanks !
