2.3.1 with quota and lmtp; message may be sent more than once

Hi, I have another problem with dovecot 2.3.1 on FreeBSD (smtpd is postfix 3.3.0). When one mail is sent with different recipients and the quota limit of one user is exceeded, the message will be delivered repeatedly to all users. The queue from postfix says: (lost connection with mailserver.foo.bar[private/lmtp-dovecot] while sending end of data -- message may be sent more than once) The problem started with dovecot 2.3.1. With 2.2.3x everything was fine. Any ideas? Hello, I'm running dovecot 2.3 from repo.dovecot.org <http://repo.dovecot.org/> on ubuntu 16.04 LTS, and I'm wondering if there is a scheduled date for the release of the bionic package in that repository. The Ubuntu mainstream version is based on the 2.2 branch, which prevent us to use it. Thanks.

Hi to all I was looking at protonmail.com Is possible to implement and end-to-end encryption with dovecot, where server-side there is no private key to decrypt messages? If I understood properly, on protonmail the private key is encrypted with user's password, so that only an user is able to decrypt the mailbox. Anything similiar ?

Hello, the wiki page describe that permission should copied from root mail directory https://wiki2.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes/Permissions The permissions for the root mail directory are set to 2770: drwxrws--- 36 root mail 4096 Apr 15 02:30 /var/spool/mail/ But newly created mailboxes get following permissions: drwx--S--- 5 newuser mail 4096 Apr 23 19:31 /var/spool/mail/newuser/ In /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-mail.conf follow options are set: mail_gid = mail mail_privileged_group = mail mail_access_groups = mail I'm missing something to get right group permissions for new mailboxes?

sieve trace directory: error

Hello, I am using a custom directory for sieve logs and trace and it apparently generate an error, in some corner case. - I have an IMAP global sieve script, that is run when appending emails into the "Archives" folder. - I have Thunderbird configured to archive emails by year When archiving an email, for instance in "Archives/2018", I often have an error message like this: Mar 31 08:03:02 homebox dovecot[14078]: imap(andre): Error: sieve: trace: creat(/home/users/andre/mails/sieve/logs//andre.Archives/2018.3.20180331-080302.14235.5.trace) failed: No such file or directory I have this configuration (amongst) for sieve logs: sieve_user_log = ~/mails/sieve/logs/ sieve_trace_dir = ~/mails/sieve/logs/ sieve_trace_level = commands sieve_trace_debug = yes sieve_trace_addresses = yes Did I a misconfigured something? dsync migration from maildir layout=fs to maildir seperator / - folders or inbox but not both

Am attempting to bring my mailserver back to home server post house move and whilst I could use rsync have been trying to get to grips with dsync. However, I seem to have an issue - my current server specifies mail_location as maildir:/var/vmail/%d/%n/Maildir:LAYOUT=fs and my imapc config on new server is as follows ... imapc_host = old.mailserver.host imapc_user = %u imapc_master_user = master imapc_password = ********** imapc_features = $imapc_features rfc822.size fetch-headers imapc_list_prefix = INBOX imapc_port = 993 imapc_ssl = imaps imapc_ssl_verify = no the trouble is if I leave imapc_list_prefix = INBOX I get the inbox only - no folders ... If I comment this out delete maildir on target and re-run .. How would I setup dovecot so that when messages are moved to the Archive mailbox, they are marked as read? Would it be similar to the imap-sieve for spam tagging? imapsieve_mailbox1_name = Junk imapsieve_mailbox1_causes = COPY imapsieve_mailbox1_before = file:/usr/lib/dovecot/sieve/report-spam.sieve Or is there a simpler method? Dovecot 2.2.36-rc1 and $HasAttachment

Hi, I installed dovecot 2.2.36-rc1 and enabled: mail_attachment_detection_options = add-flags-on-save but when messages are delivery via dovecot-lda into mailbox (Maildir) keywords are not added. Only when the messages is open keywords ($HasAttachment or $HasNoAttachment) are added. From the wiki "attachments are detected and marked during save", delivery via LDA is "save"? For info, doveadm rebuild attachments works fine. Since 2.2.36 will be the last v2.2.x release I hope that this feature will be fixed since is very useful. Error compiling with --with-storages=

mmap failed messages in syslog

I'm getting mmap failed messages in syslog on version 1.2.15 for dovecot.index.cache files. This old dovecot version is installed with debian packages. The OS and all software is 64-bit. I've found info on this log message, with a suggested fix of raising vsz_limit ... but this seems to be a config option for dovecot 2.x, not 1.x. The file it complains about being unable to mmap is only 90MB, and the biggest cache file I have found on the system is only 180MB. The system has 4GB of total memory with about 1GB of that allocated to OS disk cache right now. The mmap functionality provided by the OS doesn't use *actual* memory, so the amount of memory I have should be irrelevant. Checking 'ulimit -a' with several users shows that vmemory is unlimited for all of them. How do I go about allowing docevot 1.x to use more virtual memory? I do have a migration planned to Ubuntu 16, where I can run a 2.x version, but that's not going to happen for a while. Thanks, Shawn

Hello Dovecot users, Here's a first release candidate for the upcoming Pigeonhole release for Dovecot v2.2.36. It only contains bugfixes for now. There's one experimental plugin still in the pipeline. Changelog v0.4.24: - Fix assert panics triggered by empty messages that are being forwarded using redirect or vnd.dovecot.report. This does not likely normally occur, but this is seen as a result of certain benign failures in object storage. - Make the length of the subject header for the vacation response configurable and enforce the limit in UTF-8 codepoints rather than bytes. The subject header for a vacation response was statically truncated to 256 bytes, which is too limited for multi-byte UTF-8 characters. - Sieve editheader extension: Fix assertion panic occurring when it is used to manipulate a message header with a very large header field. - Properly abort execution of the sieve_discard script upon error. Before, the LDA Sieve plugin attempted to execute the sieve_discard script when an error occurs. This can lead to the message being lost. - Fix the interaction between quota and the sieve_discard script. When quota was used together with a sieve_discard script, the message delivery did not bounce when the quota was exceeded. Hi, In my maillog I see this warning message at every reception of e-mail: _STATUS=SENT (DELIVERED VIA DOVECOT SERVICE (DOVECONF: WARNING: /ETC/DOVECOT/CONF.D/90-QUOTA.CONF LINE 39: GLOBAL SETTING MAIL_PLUGINS WON'T CHAN....._ It is just a warning, the e-mail was delivered. expiring mail from root's Maildirs?

I would like to delete old mail from root's sent mailbox but doveadm throws errors when I try to do this, not wanting to process root's mail at all (I am running the commands as root, naturally) # doveadm expunge -u root mailbox Sent SENTBEFORE 1-Apr-2018 doveadm(root): Error: Invalid settings in userdb: userdb returned 0 as uid doveadm(root): Error: User lookup failed: Invalid user settings. Refer to server log for more information. The error makes me think this is intentional, and I can see that makes a sort of sense, but it still leaves me with a Sent box that grow forever until I manually go in and remove old mails. I am using passed for userdb and pam for passdb: passdb { username_filter = "!*@*" driver = pam } userdb { driver = passwd } Can I do this with doveadm or am going to have to resort to either manually removing the mail (hah!) or just crontabbing a task to remove the files more than 30 days old?

Use of NO-NOSELECT in mail_location

I enabled NO-NOSELECT in mail_location as it seemed to be an optimization without negative consequences. The wiki states NO-NOSELECT : Automatically delete any \NoSelect mailboxes that have no children. These mailboxes are sometimes confusing to users. Also if a \NoSelect mailbox is attempted to be created with "CREATE box/", it's created as selectable mailbox instead. The last sentence is important: if you allow this, you won't be able to create folders (i.e. directories); this caught me offguard. If you use mbox, this is something you don't want to enable. Hello Dovecoters, I am using dovecot-2.2.10-8.el7.x86_64 on RHEL 7.4 When I backup mdboxes (using SIS) using this command doveadm -Dv -o plugin/quota= sync -1f -u user1(a)user.com mdbox:/mailbackup/user1 mails get backedup but all m files are not copied. Last file copied is m.4 If I run the command again I get below error I tried with doveadm backup command as well (many times). Error: Corrupted dbox file / mailbackup/user1/storage/m.4 (around offset=3732536): EOF reading msg header (got 0/30 bytes) Result is all mails are not backedup. Hi, I want dovecot to listen for imaps (ssl) on both 993 and a non-standard port 8839. I've tried using variations on the inet_listener entries in 10-master.conf as shown in a couple of threads on here but none of the attempts have worked. Can someone provide me with a cut-and-paste solution and confirm into which file it should be placed (i.e. is the dovecot.conf format using the inet_listener = {address} appropriate)? -- Best wishes, Derek

Virtual mailbox doesn't refresh without deleting indexes

Hello, I have a virtual mailbox with the following dovecot-virtual file: mdbox/* -mdbox/Archive/* -mdbox/Junk -mdbox/Notes all younger 604800 not deleted This works at first, but after messages are older than 7 days, they continue to appear in this mailbox forever. Even if I close all IMAP clients and reconnect, I can't get the mailbox to omit the older-than-7-days messages without deleting its indexes. I have other virtual mailboxes that update as expected, but I don't think any of those are date-based. For example, this one "refreshes" as I'd expect: mdbox/* -mdbox/Archive/* -mdbox/Junk flagged Am I doing something wrong with the first virtual mailbox I mentioned above? I'm using dovecot 2.2.13 on Debian GNU/Linux. Thanks! --Bret

director stuck in inifite loop on 2.2.35

Occasionally, all of our directors get stuck in an endless loop. Likely triggered by some network event, but I haven't been able to isolate exactly what triggers it, and am unable to reproduce at the moment. When this happens, it makes the dovecot/director process on all directors unresponsive, making login impossible. Restarting dovecot "fixes" it. Here's the info collected from the stuck process. I hope that a dovecot dev could use this to either fix a bug in the async IO code or point to a possible external source that could have triggered this. Would it help to compile dovecot with -g and run a version with debugging info, to be able to inspect more when the crash happens again? Hi list, this question was already posted a few years ago (https://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2014-November/098585.html) I already asked the original queriest and he told me, that he never got an solution or workaround but it was not important enough for him. When using replication in conjunction with sieve vacations, the .dovecot.lda-dupes file is not synced with the other server. So when delivering to both servers (round-robin or randomized), senders might get more vacation mails than configured as the other server does not know, that the first one already sent a vacation message. I would like to provide either an HA/load balanced setup with a second site in Australia[AU] because of users located between EU/Asia/AU. The site to site traffic would be tunneled through either SSH or a VPN * Has this been done with Doevcot over such great distances? * How can the delay between mailstore synchonisation be handled? Pass UniqueID to sieve scripts

Hi, If a user moves a mail to a Junk folder, this e-mail is going thru imap_sieve and ends up in sa-learn. I wrote some tools to immediately propagate that to the other node of the cluster as well as locally. Everything works fine, but sometimes I see a storm of requests hogging the CPU and I would like to collect some debugging information, Preferably I would like the permanent unique id of the mail in the maildir, but am looking for some kind of unique id that will help me identify if an e-mail somehow passes the sieve filter multiple times. Basically I have changed the pipe to sa-learn to my proxy that will send it across to the other node as well as call sa-learn locally. So something I can get in a sieve script and pass along. Peter

Hi (Stephan?), is it a new feature of dovecot 2.3 /pigeonhole 0.5 that a sieve "redirect" changes the envelope sender of a redirected mail or simply a bug ? A sends mail to B, B redirects to C C sees B (not A!) as envelope sender. It is not a problem if C gets the mail but if that mail bounces for various reasons it goes back to B and A will never know about this. dovecot vs. mutt: no full index sync on Maildir new/ mtime change

This is a follow-up to "Looks like a bug to me: Dovecot ignores Maildir/new timestamp" from Fredrik Roubert on 01.12.2015: https://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2015-December/102585.html I've run into the same problem as Fredrik: When manipulating my Maildir locally with mutt, deleting a message from new/ doesn't cause a full update of the index. Therefore, IMAP clients still see the deleted message. I've read and understood Timo's reply saying that dovecot only performs a "partial sync" of the index when the mtime of new/, but not of cur/, changes. This makes perfect sense for performance reasons for most users: https://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2015-December/102588.html I, however, would be willing to take the performance hit of a full index sync whenever the mtime of new/ changes. Therefore, I looked at the code and tried to implement a config option (maildir_fullsync_on_new_mtime_change) for this behavior. However, my understanding of src/lib-storage/index/maildir/maildir-sync.c was not good enough – I probably put the ctx->mbox->storage->set->maildir_fullsync_on_new_mtime_change check in the wrong place, and all my patch did was ruin the index ;) So, to summarize my question: I'd like dovecot to perform a full index sync when the mtime of a Maildir's new/ has changed. I'm willing to take the performance hit, because it would fix a problem I'm having with using mutt and dovecot together. Can this be done in principle by adding a config option check like ctx->mbox->storage->set->maildir_fullsync_on_new_mtime_change in the right place in src/lib-storage/index/maildir/maildir-sync.c? smtp crashing with "out of memory" for ONE particular user

Today I had some troubles with user, who’s mailbox stopped working. lost connection while sending end of data error

I use dovecot-lmtp and postfix. When I send e-mail to 2 recipients (or more) at the same time and if one of them is over quota (or under quota and the message I send is bigger than his free space) mailq shows: -Queue ID- --Size-- ----Arrival Time---- -Sender/Recipient------- 20B03336F22 26099 Thu Apr 19 18:02:47 support(a)example.com (lost connection with server25.example.org[private/dovecot-lmtp] while sending end of data -- message may be sent more than once) user1(a)example.com user2(a)example.com E-mails sent from the same domain on same server so it's a local delivery. If I send the e-mail to the over quota user ( only him on To: ) then I get a bounce that says that user is over quota which is the correct behaviour. I think the problem started after I upgrade dovecot-2.2.35 to dovecot-2.3.1. Is this a known bug?

2.3.1 -> "doveadm backup -A" not working

Hi, I'm running 2.3.1 and trying to do a backup. Wiki and manpage showes that -A will backup all mailboxes. It seems that "doveadm -Dv backup -A mdbox:/mnt/BACKUP/DOVECOT/" is saving each mailbox to " /mnt/BACKUP/DOVECOT/" but after finishing one, its overwriting the data from the previous user. So it ends with only the mails from the last user processed. I tried %u but thats not recognized and used as String in the path. Hans

Hello, I've got dovecot 2.3 going and a mailbox with a lot of system messages in it. What I'm wanting to do is massively move them to another mailbox. Is this doable with sieve? Thanks. Dave.

maildir vs dbox?

Hello, I've got a Dovecot virtual email setup using maildir as the mailbox format. I am wondering from others who have chosen dbox a comparison between maildir and dbox or those who have migrated from one format to another. I am wondering if changing to dbox would be beneficial? Thanks. Dave.

Replication between servers with different mail_home path

Hi, I have two dovecot servers that are configured to be replicated using dsync over ssh. This has been working well for a long time. Recently I changed the mail_home path on one of the servers, because of mail data migration. The old file system is still available, but has been made read-only for now – I plan to remove it once everything runs smoothly again. Now it seems replication is failing: the mail.err log file on both servers has lots of error messages saying that it tried to open a file on the old location and failed because it is read-only. Is this setup, with different mail_home paths on the two servers being replicated, even supported? If so, do I need to specify this explicitly in the configuration? I couldn't find relevant settings in the documentation.

Comparing Indexing Speed + ZFS question

Hi, have two quick questions: I am re-indexing some large mailboxes and I wanted to get some opinions on these speeds. I ran a random sort command on an unindexed mailbox in order to get it to index. Results, for a mailbox with 10GB Inbox, spread in 65 000 files: 3 UID SORT (ARRIVAL) US-ASCII OR OR OR FROM "dfgfgfgf" SUBJECT "dfgfgfgf" TO "dfgfgfgf" CC "dfgfgfgf" a03 select INBOX * SORT 3 OK Sort completed (2455.549 + 0.122 + 1.477 secs). Index cache file at the end was 31MB in size: 30756376 Apr 18 02:14 dovecot.index.cache Is that normal, slow or fast ? Second question is, how can I speed this up ? I store messages using Director over NFS , on top of ZFS. From what I've read it would be fairly safe to disable mail_fsync but I don't think that would help much with the indexing speed. Any other tips ?

Postfix sendmail cannot be called from Sieve redirect

Sending (in my case: forwarding) messages from Sieve via sendmail does not work with version 2.3.1. dovecot-lda "-f" argment optional?

I use dovecot-lda to deliver incoming email from Exim to Dovecot. After having some problems with email bounces with empty envelope sender not being delivered because of an empty -f argument, I discovered that Exim can pass email to Dovecot using dovecot-lda without using the -f argument at all. Would this have any adverse effects anywhere else? The docs don't even seem to specify if -f is optional or not - but I guess it is - as it seems to be working without it. Does anybody know what is its role? I'd like to understand things a bit before I just start removing it permanently from my setup.
