[Dovecot] Maildir over NFS

I'm working on bring up a new mail server to replace our current one. Our current mail server is running dovecot 1.1.16, with postfix using mbox format. User inboxes are stored locally on the mail server and all other mail folders in users home directory under mail which is NFS mounted on the mail server. For our new mail server I'm looking to switch to the Maildir format. Some years ago I remember reading that it was not recommended to run Maildir format over NFS. Now I'm looking at several posts that seem to indicate that Maildir should run fine over NFS. I'm a little concerned about running Maildir over NFS, especially from the howto conversion pages I read would move all messages over to the User ~/Maildir folder including the inbox. So having every single mail transaction going over NFS doesn't seem the smart thing to do. So question I have for the dovecot team, does running Maildir over NFS work well? Or would you recommend that all user mail folders be stored locally on the mail server when using Maildir? We have about 3400 users, doing about 30k mail deliveries daily. Some users have 10's of thousands of mail messages in hundreds of mail folders. Thanks... -- C. J. [Dovecot] quota_warning bug?

Hi, Today I was testing with dovecot 2.0 rc5 and experienced some odd behaviour with quota_warning rules. It's reproducable. When I set a rule (this one simply writes some message to a text file) and go over quota (2 messages in this case), it works as expected. But if I restart my client, remove one message, restart my client again and remove the last message from my inbox, it executes the warning rule again. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I tested with the debian package dovecot_2.0.rc5-0~auto+8 found in rename-it.nl's repository. Thanks. Best regards, Jeroen Koekkoek

I have a probleme with my configuration of dovecot I think. I have no problem for send a email but I don't want receive a email. [Dovecot] Exim+Dovecot LDA - How can I catch the crash?

Hello list I am testing mdbox with Dovecot from http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-2.0-sis/.and my MTA is Exim. It appears to crash, but I am not sure how to capture the actual crash. I know I shouldn't be using bleeding edge code, but strangely enough, I need to use this one to satisfy my curiosity, and to help me learn one or two new tricks. [Dovecot] hunting timeouts

Hi guys, I inherited a Dovecot 1.0.1, which I will have to upgrade, but until then I need, if possible, to resolve a timeout. - we have about 25 IMAP users - the busiest user has about 100 000 messages (Maildir) in less than 100 folders - the mail server is on HP server with server grade 2.5" HDDs in RAID 5 - the load average of the server is low (the 5/15 minute is under 0.20) - the mail server is in-house on Gigabit Ethernet The timeout we face is that sometimes even small messages take 20-40 seconds to open (i. e. Tunderbird 2 on Windows 7). Or connection to the mail server timeouts. Could you give me a few tips where can I look in order to detect the possible reason for these timeouts. Thank you, Iv

[Dovecot] moving mail from private inbox to public folder kills the latter

Hi I've ran into something rather nasty: if a user moves a mail from its inbox to a public folder, the folder becomes inaccessible for others, because the moved file will have the the permission 600 instead of 777 (or 666) which the rest of the emails have in the folder. How can I change this behavior so when he moves the mail it automatically becomes world-readable? Also why one mail kills the whole folder?
