Checking the link status of the NIC it showed that indeed duplexing was giving wrong results. Forcing it into the correct mode did not change anything, but finally replacing the card with a new one solved the riddle! Thanks for your help! Udo Rader

[Dovecot] Operations error with AD connections
by Maarten Vanraes 19 Oct '07

Hello, dovecot version: 1.0.beta3-3ubuntu5.5 OS: 2.6.15-26-server i686 GNU/Linux Ubuntu dapper filesys: ext3 authentication is with ldap (Active Directory) the problem is that after a while with a number of pop3 connections (8 people who have checking every 5 minutes), the ldap_search gives 'Operation Error' . we have tried to use the global catalog, but that doesn't solve the problem. the binding is the problem, we must use binding, cause we don't get a userPassword field. Right now, we have switched to courierLDAP and it works for now, we'll have to see if it persists (we have set an LDAP timeout variable, but don't know if it's related.) The thing is that we have lots of places where can setup something like this with AD, and that for now, we'll probably use courier. dovecot-ldap.conf: hosts = 172.17.80.1:3268 dn = CN=SPIC,OU=Beheerders,OU=Zonnegroep,DC=zonnewende,DC=local dnpass = xxxxxxxxx auth_bind = yes ldap_version = 3 base = dc=zonnewende, dc=local user_filter = (mail=%u) pass_attrs = uid=user, userPassword=password pass_filter = (mail=%u) user_global_uid = 5000 user_global_gid = 5000 any ideas on how to solve it? [Dovecot] performance?/connectivity? issues after server upgrade
by Udo Rader 18 Oct '07

18 Oct '07

Hi, we are facing some weird performance issues after we upgraded on of our mail servers to a new Opteron 64bit machine. The problem we are facing is that mail retrieval from external clients is incredibly slow. Fetching a mail with say a size of 3MB takes 7 minutes vs. sending exactly the same mail back to our postmaster account is only a question of seconds. I've verified this with various customers and thus I am completely lost here. The only service affected with this massive slowdown seems to be dovecot but unfortunately I cannot think of a way to debug the issue ... System load is absolutely minimal. % dovecot -n # 1.0.5: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf log_path: /var/log/dovecot.log protocols: imaps imap pop3 listen: 81.16.98.99 ssl_listen(default): 81.16.98.99 ssl_listen(imap): 81.16.98.99 ssl_listen(pop3): ssl_cert_file: /usr/bestsolution/ssl/certs/mail.bestsolution.at.pem ssl_key_file: /usr/bestsolution/ssl/private/mail.bestsolution.at.pem ssl_parameters_regenerate: 24 disable_plaintext_auth: yes login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login login_executable(default): /usr/lib/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(imap): /usr/lib/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(pop3): /usr/lib/dovecot/pop3-login first_valid_uid: 9 mail_extra_groups: mail default_mail_env: mbox:~/mail/:INBOX=/var/mail/%u mail_location: mbox:~/mail/:INBOX=/var/mail/%u mmap_disable: yes lock_method: dotlock maildir_copy_with_hardlinks: yes mail_executable(default): /usr/lib/dovecot/imap mail_executable(imap): /usr/lib/dovecot/imap mail_executable(pop3): /usr/lib/dovecot/pop3 mail_plugin_dir(default): /usr/lib/dovecot/modules/imap mail_plugin_dir(imap): /usr/lib/dovecot/modules/imap mail_plugin_dir(pop3): /usr/lib/dovecot/modules/pop3 pop3_uidl_format(default): pop3_uidl_format(imap): pop3_uidl_format(pop3): %v.%u auth default: mechanisms: digest-md5 cram-md5 login passdb: driver: ldap args: /etc/dovecot/dovecot-ldap.conf userdb: driver: ldap args: /etc/dovecot/dovecot-ldap.conf socket: type: listen client: path: /var/spool/postfix/private/auth mode: 432 user: postfix group: postfix Any ideas welcome :-) -- Udo Rader bestsolution.at EDV Systemhaus GmbH http://www.bestsolution.at

[Dovecot] Released v1.1.beta3
by Timo Sirainen 18 Oct '07

18 Oct '07

http://dovecot.org/releases/1.1/beta/dovecot-1.1.beta3.tar.gz http://dovecot.org/releases/1.1/beta/dovecot-1.1.beta3.tar.gz.sig Please try and report any bugs. Beta2 still had a few bad bugs, but I'm hoping this release is near a usable state. I've been a bit busy with school lately so I haven't had time/energy to answer mails in here. The main reason has been this lab course (biochemistry) which ends on friday, so I'll try to start answering mails sometimes next week. Changes since beta2: - SORT fixes. Still buggy? - If Date: header doesn't exist or is broken, fallback to INTERNALDATE (as required by newer sort drafts, which I hadn't noticed before, v1.0.6 will have this too) - Log fatals/panics as such, instead of converting them to errors. - Don't bother logging "returned error 89" if the child process logged a fatal before that. - dovecot.index.cache file may have been updated wrong when saving messages causing all kinds of problems if it was - Some crashfixes

[Dovecot] Migration to Dovecot
by Frank Bonnet 18 Oct '07

18 Oct '07

Hello all Tomorrow is the day , I'm gonna migrate all our mailboxes and imap folders from our old mailhub to the new one. In the same time I will migrate from UW to Dovecot , I've read all the stuff about it on the Dovecot web site. I have one question , do I have to care about the .imap cache directory created by Dovecot in any way or will it be "all automatic" when starting Dovecot ? Many thanks -- Cordialement Frank Bonnet

[Dovecot] iPhone 1.1.1 problems.
by Mike Meyer 18 Oct '07

18 Oct '07

I'm having problems with the iPhone client in the 1.1.1 version of the iPhone software. Things with other clients work fine, and the iPhone worked fine before it was upgraded to 1.1.1. Other phones on 1.1.1 failed. I'm still working on testing against the client with the iPhone 1.0.2 software on it. The problem is that the client simply doesn't connect to dovecot. I can see the packets passing back and forth in a number of ways, but haven't been able to see the contents. I tried turning on raw logging, but don't get log files for accesses from the iPhone. What I get are lines like so: Oct 13 00:08:34 bhuda dovecot: imap-login: Disconnected: rip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xx2, lip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xx1, TLS Turning off SSL both ways, and the message changes to: Oct 13 18:21:38 bhuda dovecot: imap-login: Aborted login: rip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xx2, lip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xx1 Tweaking the logging in the firewall reveals something interesting: apparently the phone makes the connection to 993, then dovecot drops the connection, but the phone keeps sending to it (and yes, I've tried setting the firewall to allow arbitrary traffic between the phone and the server). So, first question: is anyone who has clients using iPhone software version 1.1.1 working willing to share config information? Second question: suggestions for things to try to solve the problem? (Other than talk to apple as that process is underway)? For instance, a recipe to sniff the text of the interchange? Final question: Any other information I can provide that might help debug this? Thanks, <mike dovecot info: bhuda# dovecot --version 1.0.5 bhuda# dovecot -n # 1.0.5: /usr/opt/etc/dovecot.conf ssl_cert_file: /usr/local/etc/openvpn/server.crt ssl_key_file: /usr/local/etc/openvpn/server.key login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login login_executable: /usr/opt/libexec/dovecot/imap-login verbose_proctitle: yes first_valid_gid: 0 mail_extra_groups: mail mail_location: maildir:~/mailboxes imap_client_workarounds: delay-newmail outlook-idle netscape-eoh tb-extra-mailbox-sep auth default: passdb: driver: pam userdb: driver: passwd System info: bhuda# uname -a FreeBSD bhuda.mired.org 6.2-STABLE FreeBSD 6.2-STABLE #6: Sun Jun 3 04:17:59 EDT 2007 mwm@bhuda.mired.org:/usr/src/sys/amd64/compile/BHUDA amd64 And all the mailboxes are stored on ufs file systems. <mike -- Mike Meyer <mwm(a)mired.org> http://www.mired.org/consulting.html Independent Network/Unix/Perforce consultant, email for more information.

[Dovecot] OT: Cron Output When Deleting Files
by Jeff Grossman 17 Oct '07

17 Oct '07

I have a Dovecot setup for a personal e-mail server. I have a cron job setup each evening which runs the following command to delete old messages from my Deleted Items folder. find ./ -type f -ctime +14 | xargs rm I don't know that much about bash scripting. I would like the output to tell me how many files were deleted. Can anybody share with me how can I get that done, or point in the correct direction? Thanks, Jeff

[Dovecot] Squirrelmail Problem with 1.1 Beta 3
by Jeff Grossman 16 Oct '07

16 Oct '07

I just installed 1.1 beta 3 and noticed a problem when sending an e-mail with Squirrelmail. When I hit send, I get the following error in my log: Oct 16 11:35:54 apple dovecot: IMAP(jeff): Disconnected: EOF while appending bytes=1851/5926 Oct 16 11:35:54 apple imapproxyd[9132]: Raw_Proxy(): IMAP server unexpectedly closed the connection on sd 9 I am also using imapproxy. I wasn't sure if that line would help also. In Squirrelmail I get a LOGOUT message when it tries to redisplay the INBOX listing. The message does get sent correctly, but it does not get copied to my Sent Items folder. I went and deleted all of the dovecot.index* files and now I don't get that error anymore, but I now get the following error. The message is now copied to the Sent Items folder. Oct 16 11:44:45 apple dovecot: IMAP(jeff): Cache file /home/jeff/.maildir/.Sent Items/dovecot.index.cache: Newly added field got lost unexpectedly Jeff
