[Dovecot] systemd socket and service
by Vasiliy G Tolstov 01 Mar '11

01 Mar '11

Hello. I'm use systemd and have some questions: 1) Why dovecot.socket contains only imap ListenStream? [Unit] Description=Dovecot IMAP/POP3 email server activation socket [Socket] #dovecot expects separate IPv4 and IPv6 sockets BindIPv6Only=ipv6-only ListenStream=0.0.0.0:143 ListenStream=[::]:143 ListenStream=0.0.0.0:993 ListenStream=[::]:993 KeepAlive=true 2) Does dovecot.service required to use dovecot lmtp, or it may be stoppped (i not often check my mails via client, but have many incoming mails some time) -- Vasiliy G Tolstov <v.tolstov(a)selfip.ru> Selfip.Ru

[Dovecot] Forward and keep on snow leopard server
by Jbaileypro 01 Mar '11

I am wanting to use a service which has to have a copy of the emails but they still need to be delivered to the users inbox. Which script and where does it need to be placed for this to work? I am not sure which version sls runs dovecot but I know that it also uses spamassasin. If anyone can help that would be great. [Dovecot] Smart IMAP proxying with imapc storage
by Timo Sirainen 28 Feb '11

28 Feb '11

I just committed a very early initial implementation of "imapc" storage backend to v2.1 hg: http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-2.1 You can't really do anything except open INBOX and read mails from it, so it's currently only intended for initial testing. It sucks in many ways right now, but I'll be improving it. The idea is that you could set for example: mail_location = imapc:imap.gmail.com And then Dovecot could act as a proxy to gmail. It won't actually work currently with gmail, because there's no SSL support for outgoing connections. Currently index files are forcibly disabled, but it would be easy to enable them, allowing Dovecot to do caching locally to improve performance. In future perhaps it will also support caching message headers/bodies to avoid unnecessary traffic. Besides the mail_location setting, you'll need to also forward the user's password to imap process in "pass" userdb extra field. How to do that depends on what passdb/userdb you're using. While testing you could simply set a static password: plugin { pass = yourpassword }

Re: [Dovecot] Problem with ldap / quotas

I forgot to cc the list in my subsequent question in this thread, so that question and Timo's reply has not been included in the mailing list. I am submitting for thread completeness, thanking Timo for his invaluable help. Or instead of a hard coded limit, you could set Trash's size to e.g. 10% of the default limit (quota_rule2 = Trash:storage=10%%) so you don't have to return it from ldap. > >> 2. You mean it allowed user to exceed quota? mail_debug=yes could log something useful about what's going on.

[Dovecot] Problems setting up shared/public imap folders
by Andre Tann 28 Feb '11

28 Feb '11

Hello everyone, today I have tried to set up shared and public IMAP folders, but it didn't work. # rpm -qa | grep dovecot dovecot12-backend-mysql-1.2.11-3.3.1.x86_64 dovecot12-backend-sqlite-1.2.11-3.3.1.x86_64 dovecot12-1.2.11-3.3.1.x86_64 dovecot12-backend-pgsql-1.2.11-3.3.1.x86_64 Here is my dovecot.conf [1]. Can anyone explain what is wrong with my configuration? It is not possible to access the shared and public mailboxes. Thunderbird and KMail don't show the shared/public namespace at all. Outlook Express shows these namespaces, but trying to access leads to a "mailbox doesn't exist" error message. Dovecot is not logging any errors. What's wrong? Thanks, Andre [1] # cat /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf protocols = imap imaps protocol imap { mail_plugins = acl imap_acl } listen = * disable_plaintext_auth = no ssl = no login_greeting = alphatest mailservice ready. mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir namespace private { separator = / prefix = inbox = yes } namespace shared { separator = / prefix = shared/ location = maildir:%%h/Maildir:INDEX=~/Maildir/shared/%%u subscriptions = no } namespace public { separator = / prefix = pub/ location = maildir:/srv/mail/pub subscriptions = no } mail_uid = 1002 mail_gid = 1000 protocol imap { mail_plugin_dir = /usr/lib64/dovecot/modules/imap } protocol pop3 { mail_plugin_dir = /usr/lib64/dovecot/modules/pop3 } protocol managesieve { } protocol lda { mail_plugin_dir = /usr/lib64/dovecot/modules/lda mail_plugins = acl } auth default { mechanisms = plain passdb pam { } userdb passwd { } user = root } dict { } plugin { acl = vfile acl_shared_dict = file:/var/lib/dovecot/shared-mailboxes/%u acl_anyone = allow } -- Andre Tann

[Dovecot] shared folder
by Eric Broch 28 Feb '11

28 Feb '11

Hello list, I have dovecot-1.2.3 installed on my mail server. I created a shared directory which works fine, however, this shared directory has over 16GB of email and when users, 40 to 50 of them, login to their IMAP account and download of the contents of this shared folder begins on their machines it bogs down the server to a crawl. I had to comment out the share it was so bad. Is there a way to implement permissions on the shared folder and add 1 or 2 users at a time so as not to bog down the server. Eric Broch

[Dovecot] error - dovecot - child (login) killed with signal 16
by Chris Hoogendyk 28 Feb '11

28 Feb '11

We've been happily running Dovecot in Solaris 10 for about 8 months now. Yesterday, Solaris 10's SMF put it in maintenance mode (shut it down) seemingly out of the blue. The only thing going on was that I had updated the ssl certificate. We had previously been using a self signed cert. Now we have a cert from InCommon. We had a problem with a few users who are still on ancient Eudora and didn't have the proper authority chains. We had a problem with a few Thunderbird users who hadn't set up the fully qualified server name in their configuration. The shutdown was coincident (and could be just a coincidence) to the minute with my boss working with a Windows Thunderbird user to change their configuration. I can't figure out how this happened or why. I don't see how to track it any further than what I have here, and it doesn't make sense that a user issue or process could cause this. The IP, by the way, is our NAT. So no way of telling much from that. From /var/adm/dovecot.log: Feb 24 15:52:57 marlin dovecot: [ID 583609 local2.error] dovecot: child 21233 (login) killed with signal 16 (ip=128.119.55.8) Feb 24 15:52:58 marlin dovecot: [ID 583609 local2.warning] dovecot: Killed with signal 15 (by pid=26750 uid=0 code=kill) Note that the first line is logged as an error. These items from the SMF service log for dovecot: [ Feb 24 15:52:58 Stopping because process received fatal signal from outside the service. ] [ Feb 24 15:52:58 Executing stop method ("/etc/mail/svc/method/dovecot.init.d stop") ] Stopping Dovecot are the source of the signal 15 in the second line of the dovecot log above. So, the presumption is that the signal 16 precipitated SMF to put the service in maintenance mode which lead to the signal 15. Any ideas what went wrong here? How to track it down? How to prevent it from happening again? Doing `svcadm clear dovecot` cleared the maintenance mode and started it up again.
