[Dovecot] Pointers for developing a proper encryption plugin?

Hi all, One thing that's always itching when I think about mail-servers, is the storage of e-mail messages in (rather) plain-text. Meaning, any administrator with sufficient privileges would be able to read messages not meant for them. Of course, PGP alike solutions exist, but that's not for the masses. In my opinion I would like to have e-mail messages stored encrypted using a (strong) user-supplied password. That password would ideally be the same as the one the user logs in with. So for me it's okay to place and enforce that requirement on any of the users. Having this in place would for sure reassure external auditors/accountants of any kind. Having Google'd from here to 'yonder and consulting experts on Experts Exhange, I have come up with only this pointer: http://dovecot.markmail.org/search/?q=dovecot+encrypt#query:dovecot%20encry… It mention the same issue, and also mentions the non-existence of a solution (back in May 2010). But, beforing diving into developing solutions myself, I have to be absolutely sure that there isn't any solution yet. And, in consequence of non-existence: what would allow me to fasttrack any development efforts on this? Is there an overview available where I could learn the best approach for plugin development? Hi, Sorry. This is what I find when I try to run Dovecot. # dovecot -F Segmentation fault If I comment out the SSL configuration values, then: # dovecot -F doveconf: Fatal: Error in configuration file /opt/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf: ssl enabled, but ssl_cert not set These are the configure options, "--enable-maintainer-mode" & "--enable-devel-checks" were added with the hope that dovecot would produce a more verbose error message. ./configure --prefix=/opt --with-ssl=openssl --disable-dependency-tracking --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-devel-checks None of the log files have been touched since before this version of Dovecot was installed (logging was initially part of the configuration). [Dovecot] dovecot can't see mail that is there

I used to install dovecot on any Fedora fresh installation and I could fetch my internal mail few minutes later. Now I've been struggling for two days and I haven't got my mail working yet. I have Fedora 14 with sendmail. Some application on the same machine send mail to an account on the same machine (hence all is confined to one machine) and I want to retrieve it from a laptop on the same LAN via Outlook. If I login into the account and check the mail with the alpine (ex pine) client, I see that there are 10 mails. When I "telnet localhost pop3" and login into the account, the "list" command says there are 0 mails. Various suggestions found on the internet for slightly different configuration did not help. All the help will be very much appreciated. Running dovecot 1.2.9 on a Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS virtual machine. Postfix receives messages and hands them over to deliver for local storage. Today two mails came in that could not be found allthough they got delivered. [Dovecot] dsync backup errors with maildir -> mdbox

Hi, In preparation for a migration from maildir to mdbox, I am using dsync backup to do initial mailbox copies (at this point I do not want to risk any changes to the maildir). The initial run of dsync runs fine, but a second run to migrate any changes since the first run produces errors for many users. [Dovecot] Alternative storage vs. Self healing (losing flags?)

Hi, We are going to set up an environment for our customers where the storage is provided by two servers. First one stores the new emails, second one stores all the others using Dovecot's alternative storage feature (mailbox format is mdbox). The servers are connected via NFS. If, for any reason, the alternative storage is not mounted, Dovecot will see only an empty folder and due to its self-healing functionality flags for messages stored on alternative storage will be lost. Is there any way to prevent regenerating indexes (and especially flags as a side-effect) if the alternative storage seems to be completely empty? (like a dummy file in the root of the alternative storage and an option to enable/disable this check) Thanks in advance, Daniel Marczisovszky

[Dovecot] Upgrade from 1.2.16 with sieve/managesieve to 2.0.8 with pigeonhole

Hi, I would like to upgrade my server from 1.2.16 with sieve and managesieve to 2.0.8 with pigeonhole. Will I get all functionality I was having before? Should this migration be painless or will it require some additional work? I've read the Upgrading guide so I know I need to create an additional user. I've migrated the mails from Maildir to dbox in the past (using the convert plugin); does that mean I'm fully dbox or am I in a maildir-dbox hybrid situation?
