[Dovecot] Seeing other people subscribed non-shared mailboxes
by Thomas Hummel 16 Jan '11

16 Jan '11

Hello Timo, With dovecot-2.0.8/Maildir, in a simple shared mailboxes setting I noticed the following : - user "doveimap" has 2 mailboxes : "Common" and "Private" - he shares only the "Common" mailbox to user "dovepop" doing : x setacl "Common" dovepop lrwstipekxacd x OK Setacl complete. - he subscribed to both x lsub "" * * LSUB () "." "Trash" * LSUB () "." "Common" * LSUB () "." "Private" x OK Lsub completed. I'm not realy sure if the fact that "dovepop" can see doveimap's subscribed "Private" mailbox in the "#Shared" namespace is legitimate or not : x login dovepop xxxxx x OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 LITERAL+ SASL-IR LOGIN-REFERRALS ID ENABLE IDLE SORT SORT=DISPLAY THREAD=REFERENCES THREAD=REFS MULTIAPPEND UNSELECT IDLE CHILDREN NAMESPACE UIDPLUS LIST-EXTENDED I18NLEVEL=1 CONDSTORE QRESYNC ESEARCH ESORT SEARCHRES WITHIN CONTEXT=SEARCH LIST-STATUS ACL RIGHTS=texk] Logged in x list "" * * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "." "Trash" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "." "INBOX" * LIST (\Noselect \HasChildren) "." "#shared.doveimap" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "." "#shared.doveimap.Common" x OK List completed. x lsub "" * * LSUB () "." "Trash" * LSUB (\Noselect) "." "#shared.doveimap" * LSUB (\Noselect) "." "#shared.doveimap.Trash" * LSUB () "." "#shared.doveimap.Common" * LSUB (\Noselect) "." "#shared.doveimap.Private" x OK Lsub completed. x logout Is this the way it's supposed to work ? My setup is : namespace { type = shared separator = "." prefix = "#shared.%%u." location = maildir:/courriel/boites/%%u:INDEX=/var/dovecot-2/indexes/%1u/%u/shared/%%u:CONTROL=/courriel/meta/%%u # Use the default namespace for saving subscriptions. # subscriptions = no # hidden = no # list = no list = children } # pwd /courriel/boites/doveimap # cat dovecot-acl-list 1294755382 Common # cat .Common/dovecot-acl user=dovepop akxeilprwts # cat .Private/dovecot-acl cat: .Private/dovecot-acl: No such file or directory Also, I'm not sure I correctly understand what "Use the default namespace for saving subscriptions." option is. Is it just the location of the subscription file for mailboxes subscribed in the shared namespace ? Where would it be if set to "yes" ? [Dovecot] dovecot lda and quota plugin with mysql
by J4 16 Jan '11

Dear all, I have postfix delivering to dovecot lda (via spamassinassin). I have configured the quota plugin, but it does not seem to respect the details in the quota table in mysql. The query I have used looks correct to me, and the user can connect to the database. I wonder if someone might put me straight on the misconfiguration. [Dovecot] umask setting
by PA 16 Jan '11

16 Jan '11

Hi, I have a user called archive that gets a BCC of all incoming/outgoing email. I would like to have the email in the new/cur directories setup to be read only, is there a way to do this in dovecot 2.0.8. I know you can set the umask in the dovecot config but I believe this is a global setting. Thanks, Paul

[Dovecot] Rename public folders
by Burian, John 16 Jan '11

16 Jan '11

I've got a number of public mailboxes configured for my users. We pretty much have to use Entourage for a client, which insists on creating all new subfolders with the name 'Untitled Folder'. When they try to rename these subfolders with useful names, Dovecot returns A028 NO [CANNOT] Renaming not supported across non-private namespaces. I guess this is because renaming a subfolder could potentially break subscriptions for other users? Or is it a hard requirement from IMAP RFC? If the former, is the problem merely very complicated, but eventually fixable, or is it just intractable? We're using Dovecot 2.0.7 from the atrpms RPM, Redhat EL 5.0. The public mailbox namespace is configured with: namespace { type = public prefix = Public/ separator = / hidden = no list = yes inbox = no subscriptions = no location = maildir:/data/imapmail/public:LAYOUT=fs } -- John Burian Systems Programmer Battelle Center for Mathematical Medicine The Research Institute At Nationwide Children's Hospital 614-355-5686 John.burian(a)nationwidechildrens.org ----------------------------------------- Confidentiality Notice: The following mail message, including any attachments, is for the sole use of the intended recipient(s) and may contain confidential and privileged information. Interesting since imap_acl also makes dovecot segfault. Maybe there is a problem in the way Dovecot loads plugins? In the real world of an ISP, killing 99% of all spam before it hits the storage is unthinkable. We only block spam that is guaranteed to be unwanted, mostly based on technical facts that can't ever happen in normal email. But email that our scanning system flags as probable spam, is just that, probable spam. We can not just throw that away, because in the real world, there are always, and I mean always, false positives. It is unthinkable to throw false positives away. So we have to put these emails in a spam folder in case the user wants to look at it. We block about 40% of all spam on technical grounds, our total spam percentage is 90%, so still about 80% of all customer email reaching the storage is spam. > > But in other environments throwing away all probable spam may be perfectly fine. For my SOHO id have no problem throwing probable spam away. I never look in my spam folder anyways, so cant be missing much. > > The same goes for SSD. We use SSD drives extensively in our company. Currently mostly in database servers, but our experiences have been good enough that we're slowly starting to add them to more systems as even boot drives. But we're not using them yet in email storage. Like Brad we're using Netapp filers because as far as I know they're one of the few commercially available HA filesystem companies. We've looked at EMC and Sun as well, but havent found a reason to move away from Netapp. In 12 years of netapp we've only had 1 major outage that lasted half a day (and made the front page of national news papers). So, understand that bit. Major outages make it to national news papers for us. HA, failover, etc are kind of important to us. > > So why not build something ourselves and use SSD? I suppose we could, but it's not as easy as it sounds for us. (your mileage may vary). It would take significant amounts of engineering time, testing, migrating, etc etc. And the benefits are uncertain. We dont know if an open source HA alternative can give us another 12 years of virtually faultless operation. It may. It may not. Email is not something to start gambling with. People get kind of upset when their email disappears. We know what we've got with Netapp. > > I did dabble in using SSD for indexes for a while, and it looked very promising. Certainly indexes are a prime target for SSD drives. But when the director matured, we started using the director and the netapp for indexes again. I may still build my own NFS server and use SSD drives just for indexes, simply to offload IOPS from the Netapp. Indexes are a little less scary to experiment with. > > So, if you're in the position to try out SSD drives for indexes or even for storage, go for it. Hi all, Is there anywhere a complete list with the build dependencies for Dovecot? A list with all the libraries/binaries that are required to build dovecot from source with support of all its features. Thank you, Buzai

[Dovecot] Can I get rid of the fchown log messages?

Hi, Since upgrading dovecot version (from somewhat ancient to 1.2.16), I see messages in the logs like these: Jan 15 00:55:17 srv0303 dovecot: POP3(obm03): fchown(/home/obm/obm03/mail/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index.tmp, -1, 8(mail)) failed: Operation not permitted (egid=1033(obm), group based on /var/mail/obm03) I know that this is because the mailbox in /var/mail has ownership username:mail. However, in this setup this is intentional, and quota-related (quota on inbox is enforced by Exim, not Dovecot, and kernel does group-quota but not for group mail). Also, group read rights for group mail are intentional. >From what I read on this list, it has something to do with shared folders. I did not (at least it wasn't my intention) configure users' inboxes as shared folders. So, is there a way to disable these log messages, or, to disable Dovecot's attempts to try to change the owner/group of the index/cache/log files when these are inside the user's private ~/mail folder? More specifically, is there a way to do this without changing anything to users' inbox permissions? Thanks, Maarten
