Using dovecot 1.2beta (but earlier versions should behave similarly) we have a problem in conjunction with empty To: headers and the RT request tracker. RT sends mail out using Bcc: and no To: header at all. To make some mailers happy one can configure to send a dummy To: header, which we do. Our To header looks like: To: "AdminCc of rt Ticket #123456":; The message_address_parse function called with the TRUE flag (triggers add_fixed_address) in dovecot changes that to To: AdminCc of rt Ticket #123456: MISSING_MAILBOX@MISSING_DOMAIN ; and then at least alpine does use that invalid address as Cc: address when replying. If the mail is stored in a local folder, i.e. does not get fetched via IMAP then the To: line is displayed as is and a reply does not result in an errorneous Cc: This behaviour is at least inconsistent from a user point of view. Is there some advice other than change the RT mail header generation? [Dovecot] Convert from maildir to dbox

Ok...I made the leap. Compiled a copy of 1.2b4 (very pleasant compile BTW - almost no warnings, nice code Timo!)...tweaked a config...had a few false starts... 1.2b4 seems to working quite nicely. Now...for my next magical trick... I would like to migrate from maildir to dbox. I've tried using the convert plugin, but it kept failing during the conversion. I should mention my paths: home (old & new) = /var/mail/%d/%n old mail = maildir:/var/mail/%d/%n new mail = dbox:/var/mail/%d/%n/dbox Note that "home" was defined as the same path as "mail" in my old config - I'm looking to fix that as well during the migration. I found entries in my mail log after the convert execution similar to: Mar 30 19:00:52 bubba dovecot: IMAP(sfox(a)amfes.com): rename(/var/mail/amfes.com/sfox/.dovecot.convert.lock/cur, /var/mail/amfes.com/sfox/dbox/mailboxes/dovecot/convert/lock/dbox-Mails) failed: Not a directory Mar 30 19:01:41 bubba dovecot: IMAP(sfox(a)amfes.com): Mailbox conversion failed for mailbox dovecot.convert.lock Now that I'm staring at that line...I'm wondering if that "home=mail" configuration is part of the problem. I currently have about a dozen users on this box - but with very large mailboxes (I still have archived mailing lists in mine!). If there's a few manual steps I need to perform to "condition" this setup prior to conversion please advise. Should I manually shift the mailboxes into a "/var/mail/%d/%n/maildir" folder? -- Daniel

[Dovecot] MAILBOXDIR question

I'm unclear about where and how this is to be used. I gather it is to be a new standard, but I didn't seem to find anything about it in the Dovecot Wiki Mail Location page. There are some words about it in the 1.1.12/3 release notes, but perhaps I'm thick, but they're meta-ambiguous to me. Is it meant to be used like this: mail_location = mbox:MAILBOXDIR=~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u instead of the current mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u ??? [Dovecot] Panic: Trying to allocate 2147483648 bytes

Hi all, I recently upgraded from courier to dovecot 1.1.12 on a Solaris 9 system with about 100 users. We have been testing dovecot for sometime in a mixed Linux/Solaris environment and are aware of the index endianess issue with multiple archs. To solve this, we run with INDEX=MEMORY (as seen in the docs) so that only Linux clients have anything to do with the indexes. We generally have much more of them anyways. So far everything is working smoothly, but when someone does a search through directory with a large number of emails, dovecot dies and prints the following message: [ID 107833 mail.crit] Panic: Trying to allocate 2147483648 bytes I googled around and saw this same issue elsewhere, with NFS indexes usually being the problem. However, we have indexes turned off, so I don't understand why the same problem is still happening. Just to be sure, I ran with: mmap_disable = yes dotlock_use_excl = no mail_nfs_storage = yes But there has been no change, I can still reproduce it at will. Setting mail_nfs_index = yes caused my connections to stop working, so that didn't help either. Besides, I wouldn't think that would be the answer considering we set INDEX=MEMORY. [Dovecot] Upgrade from 1.0 to 1.1, plus migration from Maildir to dbox

Ok - I gave up on trying to get CIFS to work - there's obviously stuff going on I don't understand. So - instead of trying to get a virtual server to work, I next tried a chroot. That worked...but imapsync error'ed out trying to handle one of my large mailboxes. I was trying to setup a "new" server, migrate all my mail over, verify everything worked - maybe even leave the virtual server operating for a while. But the fates are consipiring against me. So - time to make the leap. I want to upgrade a live version 1.0 server to version 1.1 (from Ubuntu repositories, using version 1.0.10 to 1.1.4). What special steps do I need to take to have this go smoothly? At least I have some semi-tested configs for 1.1 that I can use. Do I just stop the server, upgrade, upgrade the configs, start - and pray? Or is there another step? Also, my legacy installation was using maildir - I'd like to try shifting to dbox. Do I just need to change the prefix on mail_location and the conversion will magically happen? -- Daniel

I run a telnet localhost 143 to get into my loopback installation of Dovecot on Ubuntu8.04 I have the auth default {} containing the following auth mechanisms, auth default: mechanisms : plain login cram-md5 digest-md5 I had an user which is called user1, I do the following after telnet localhost 143 A Login user1 <user1's pwd> A CAPABILITY I expect to get the list that contains the following - AUTH=PLAIN AUTH=LOGIN AUTH=CRAM-MD5 AUTH=DIGEST-MD5 But actually I did not get the above content, I only get a short list as below, CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 SASL -IR SORT THREAD=REFERENCES MULTIAPPEND UNSELECT LITERAL+ IDLE CHILDREN NAMESPACE LOGIN-REFERRALS A OK Capability completed Why did I miss the AUTH=PLAIN AUTH=LOGIN AUTH=CRAM-MD5 AUTH=DIGEST-MD5?? [Dovecot] dovecot: auth(default): ldap(...): Authenticated user not found

Hi, I'm trying to set up dovecot together with postfix and experience some problems. Here's in details what I have and what I want to get. I have a ldap server on localhost, a working setup of dovecot to serve sasl, imap using ldap, a working setup of Postfix for (s)smtp (I can authenticate which uses dovecot's sasl). What i wan't to get is a completely working email server for ldap users with their email forwardings (so far they have only 1 forwarding). The porblem I stuck on is the following: when sending mail through (s)smtp, after passing authentication, I get my email dropped. Hi, I was wondering if I can make sendmail use dovecot's SASL implementation...maybe I should somehow compile it against dovecot's SASL ? My idea is to make sendmail and dovecot authenticate against one central user/password repository. Is this possible ? thank you. P.S. I want to use virtual users
