[Dovecot] Authentication without password
by Feraudet Cyril 25 Mar '06

25 Mar '06

Hi all, for one of my developpements, I need to be able to connect an IMAP server with a login but without password. (I use dovecot 1.0.beta3) For the userdb, I use "userdb static" : userdb static { args = uid=114 gid=114 home=/mydev/mail/%u } But I don't know how to allow IMAP connection by my application without password. I won't connect to a database, having a user/password file or something like this ... I think to use "passdb checkpassword" to call a fake authentication script .... Anyone have a better idea ? Thanks, Cyril Feraudet

[Dovecot] How Can I Add New Flags
by Sezai KARATOZ 25 Mar '06

25 Mar '06

Hi all, I am new in Dovecot. I wanna use Dovecot in the big mail system about 4 million active or passive users. We use recently Courier Imap, but search mails process is so slowly. I tried Dovecot that it is better then Courier so much. But I have a problem with integration Dovecot to my system. I am using some extra flags in mails to mark them from others. For example I use a private flag "M" to understand it that this mail come from us as newsletter. I make some changes in code, but unfortunately I could'nt add this flag to Dovecot correctly. Please help me it that how can add this flag. I use maildir type Thanks, Sezai

[Dovecot] Shared namespaces
by Mark Lidstone 25 Mar '06

25 Mar '06

Hi all, I'm trying to replace the "Public Folders" functionality in Exchange server. At first I thought it'd be something easily do-able with an IMAP server so I immediately thought of Dovecot. I setup what I though would work and things started to go a little screwy with subscription settings and the like. I started off by making a public maildir folder (in /home/public/Maildir) and setting the namespaces up in /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf like this: namespace private { separator = / prefix = INBOX/ location = maildir:%h/Maildir inbox = yes } namespace public { separator = / prefix = Public/ location = maildir:/home/public/Maildir inbox = no hidden = no } The folder /home/public/Maildir has owner root:users and mode 770, and the file dovecot-shared in there has the same owner and mode 660. I logged with Thunderbird as user 1 and everything seems to work fine. However, when I logged in as user 2 I was getting all kinds of errors. On checking the permissions of /home/public/Maildir/subscriptions it was user1:user1 with mode 600. So then I thought "well, I'll change it to user1:users 660 and then everyone should be able to change it". I was very wrong. Whenever someone changed it, the ownership changed to userx:userx 600. Even when I tried setting the ownership to root:users and mode to 640, anyone could change it and set it to their own name (thus preventing anyone else from using it). To be perfectly honest, I'd ideally like to give people separate subscription settings anyway. I thought about symlinking the folders in, but that makes it a manual process to add new folders to everyone's maildirs. Can anyone please give me any pointers? I am trying to implement drac plugin. Compiles fine. Just need config data. Brian

[Dovecot] [PATCH] OpenSSL RNG initialization
by Vilmos Nebehaj 25 Mar '06

25 Mar '06

Hi, dovecot tries to use OpenSSL's PRNG to generate random numbers if there is no /dev/urandom found. Unfortunately, it is flawed in its present form, since the PRNG is not seeded before RAND_bytes() is called in src/lib/randgen.c (on systems which have /dev/urandom, OpenSSL automatically seeds its PRNG from the urandom device). Here's a patch to address this issue: it tries to seed the PRNG if there is no /dev/urandom present (which is likely the case if dovecot uses OpenSSL's RAND API). It can also be fetched from http://innoidea.com/~vili/dovecot_rng_init.diff -Vilmos Nebehaj Index: configure.in =================================================================== RCS file: /home/cvs/dovecot/configure.in,v retrieving revision 1.266 diff -u -r1.266 configure.in --- configure.in 28 Feb 2006 08:36:41 -0000 1.266 +++ configure.in 10 Mar 2006 17:15:01 -0000 @@ -358,7 +358,8 @@ AC_CHECK_FUNCS(fcntl flock lockf inet_aton sigaction getpagesize madvise \ strcasecmp stricmp vsnprintf vsyslog writev pread \ setrlimit setproctitle seteuid setreuid setegid setresgid \ - strtoull strtouq setpriority quotactl getmntent kqueue kevent) + strtoull strtouq setpriority quotactl getmntent kqueue kevent \ + getrusage) dnl * I/O loop function have_ioloop=no Index: src/lib/lib.h =================================================================== RCS file: /home/cvs/dovecot/src/lib/lib.h,v retrieving revision 1.20 diff -u -r1.20 lib.h --- src/lib/lib.h 25 Sep 2005 10:44:04 -0000 1.20 +++ src/lib/lib.h 10 Mar 2006 17:15:02 -0000 @@ -20,6 +20,13 @@ # include <stdint.h> /* C99 int types, we mostly need uintmax_t */ #endif +#ifdef HAVE_SYS_TIME_H +# include <sys/time.h> +#endif +#ifdef HAVE_SYS_TIME_H +# include <sys/resource.h> +#endif + #include "compat.h" #include "macros.h" #include "failures.h" Index: src/lib/randgen.c =================================================================== RCS file: /home/cvs/dovecot/src/lib/randgen.c,v retrieving revision 1.13 diff -u -r1.13 randgen.c --- src/lib/randgen.c 6 Jan 2005 19:08:19 -0000 1.13 +++ src/lib/randgen.c 10 Mar 2006 17:15:03 -0000 @@ -81,6 +81,42 @@ return buf; } +static void random_init_rng(void) +{ + int counter = 0; + struct timeval tv; +#ifdef HAVE_GETRUSAGE + struct rusage ru; +#endif + + /* + * If the RNG is already seeded, we can return + * immediately. + */ + if (RAND_status() == 1) + return; + + /* + * Else, try to seed it. [Dovecot] Message Filenames
by Charlie Davis 25 Mar '06

25 Mar '06

Is there anyway to get a message's filename through the imap server? I've been developing a program for awhile and just switched to dovecot from courier. Courier had a file that for every line was like: <message uid> <message filename> Is there anway to get this information out of dovecot? -Charlie

[Dovecot] first crack at auto-trash plugin
by David Powers 25 Mar '06

25 Mar '06

I have written an alpha version of an auto trash plugin for dovecot. When compiled in any mail expunged from a non-Trash folder is moved to a folder named Trash. As of yet the folder is not created if it doesn't exist (the process fails before expunge). I would appreciate feedback of any sort. In addition, I am currently getting an error I haven't been able to puzzle out in the logs when it runs: Mar 21 15:22:01 david dovecot: imap(david(a)grayskies.net): Timeout leak: 0x807fad0 I see that it seems to relate to transactions somehow, but my few hours of playing with dovecot haven't given me the answer - so ideas/patches to the code would also be nice. You can grab it here: http://wrath.grayskies.net/tarballs/auto-trash.tar.gz -David

[Dovecot] Dovecot LDA + Fedora destribution = no go?
by Charlie Davis 25 Mar '06

Anyone know of a way to get the LDA to work on the fedora distribution available on yum? I'm a big fan of the whole yum-auto-updating thing but if this isn't possible, I'll go tarball. -Charlie

[Dovecot] Method of archiving mail?
by Stephen Allen 24 Mar '06

24 Mar '06

Hello I have a situation in which a number of users have 10,000+ messages in the maildir, going back a few years. I'm not a fan of this many files lying around so I'd like to set up some kind of archiving, but one that will allow user's access to the old mails should they wish to see them. I thought of a cron job trying to sift through messages pulling those what were older than x days, then writing some script to process a request from a user (date/time/from/to/subject/body text) and copy matching messages to a "query" folder in the maildir. However, a) I'm not good at this kind of thing, and b) I have a feeling it's already been done before. Can anyone point me in the right direction please... is their software around to do this already? Many thanks, Steve :)

[Dovecot] Imap Timeouts
by Neil Wilson 23 Mar '06

23 Mar '06

Hi guys, I've got a client running 1.0.beta3 on SuSe 9.3 Everything has been running perfectly since it was installed about 6 months ago, but lately they've had issues with email clients not being able to connect to the IMAP server, until they close their clients(Thunderbird & Outlook) and then re-open them. They have roughly 70 users on their network, so it sounds like it could be too many active sessions at once, but I've tried changing a few things in the config, and so far nothing has resolved this. Any help would be appreciated. Regards.
