The mailboxes I was using were directly copied from another server which was also using Dovecot. After I deleted all files named *dovecot* in the maildirs, the imap process no nolger crashes.

[Dovecot] migrating POP3 from UW IMAP: X-UIDL and X-UID
by Bertrand Leboeuf 15 Mar '06

15 Mar '06

With a INBOX mbox created by UW IMAP the messages in INBOX mbox contains the X-UIDL field When I use Dovecot POP3 with pop3_uidl_format = %08Xv%08Xu on the first run, X-UID is inserted, but all messages are downloaded again. What am I missing, I don't want the clients to download the read messages again. Thanks Bertrand Leboeuf leboeuf(a)emt.inrs.ca

[Dovecot] Imap crashes when trying to move messages
by ambroz.bizjak＠guest.arnes.si 15 Mar '06

The imap process crashes when SquirrelMail wants to move a message to another folder. I have run imap in gdb and talked to it the same way SquirrelMail does and got a backtrace. I am using Dovecot beta3. I am using it in combination with XMail, which has maildir databases. My system is Gentoo Linux on x86. The same version of Dovecot works great for me on amd64 with exactly the same config. Here is what I gave done: janez ~ # MAIL=maildir:/chroot/xmail/var/MailRoot/domains/b4ever.net/ambro/Maildir gdb /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap GNU gdb 6.4 Copyright 2005 Free Software Foundation, Inc. [Dovecot] Strange dovecot-uidlist behavior on maildir conversion
by allen petersen 15 Mar '06

15 Mar '06

Hi. So I just moved my email over from mbox to maildir. For the most part the conversion went fine, but I had a bit of an odd thing happen when I accessed my mail through dovecot. It seems that when I ran mb2md to convert my mailboxes from mbox to maildir, I got a lot of messages created that look like 1142356176.000000.mbox:2,RS 1142356176.000421.mbox:2,S 1142356176.000001.mbox:2,S 1142356176.000422.mbox:2,RS 1142356176.000002.mbox:2,RS 1142356176.000423.mbox:2,S 1142356176.000003.mbox:2,RS 1142356176.000424.mbox:2,S and so forth. Now, that really should be fine, that I can tell; each message has the same timestamp and a different, sequential delivery identifier. However, for some reason when dovecot accessed this directory, it created UIDs for these messages like so: (from dovecot-uidlist) 1 1142362834 915 1 1142356176.000488.mbox 2 1142356176.000207.mbox 3 1142356176.000425.mbox 4 1142356176.000117.mbox 5 1142356176.000398.mbox 6 1142356176.000335.mbox I have no idea where this order came from, but it's clearly not the order that I would have expected. I would expect that dovecot would sort these messages by timestamp, followed by delivery identifier. Instead, it put them in a seemingly random order. And, of course, my email client by default shows messages in the order that it gets them from the server, so now when I look at my email all of my old messages are shuffled until I do an explicit sort by date. Any idea why this is happening? Is there some reasoning behind this, or is it just a bug? I looked through the archives a bit, but didn't find a mention of anyone else with this particular problem. I suppose I could just create the initial uid lists by hand and put them in the correct order, but that really doesn't seem like the correct solution. Or I could actually dig through the source and find out exactly what it's doing, but, well, I figure that asking the list first is easier. For reference, I'm running dovecot 0.99.14-1 on debian sarge. I though that I was doing a good job by reproducing this on the newer version my ubuntu desktop, but it turns out that it's running the same version. :) -allen

[Dovecot] Rootless configuration
by James Davis 14 Mar '06

14 Mar '06

I'm trying to setup a rootless configuration so I can better manage the e-mail that comes to the mailbox of a unix account I have. I've successfully compiled Dovecot and followed the instructions for a rootless configuration, tweaking my config until Dovecot returns no errors. However I've got to a stage where upon running ~/..../sbin/dovecot it just quits with no server running and no errors. Any ideas? My rather small and basic configuration file is as follows... # Base directory where to store runtime data. base_dir = /home/jamesd/imap/dovecot/run/ # Protocols we want to be serving: protocols = imap listen = * ssl_disable = yes log_path = /home/jamesd/imap/dovecot/logs/ info_log_path = /home/jamesd/imap/dovecot/logs/ ## Login processes login_dir = /home/jamesd/imap/dovecot/run/login login_chroot = no login_user = jamesd ## IMAP specific settings protocol imap { listen = *:10143 } ## Authentication processes auth default { mechanisms = plain passdb passwd-file { args = /home/jamesd/imap/dovecot/etc/passwd } user = jamesd } Many thanks, James -- http://www.freecharity.org.uk/ - Free hosting for charities http://jamesd.ukgeeks.co.uk/

[Dovecot] Shared maildir through namespace help...
by Brice Figureau 14 Mar '06

14 Mar '06

Hi, I'm a happy user of dovecot since the 0.99.x days, and recently switched my user base to 1.0b2. Now, to the point, I got a request (from marketing) to share a lot of maildirs between two (and possibly more) accounts. Those two accounts have differents uid/gid. The maildirs are actually in one of the account. I thought I could possibly craft a public namespace for those maildirs as explained in the wiki, but alas, it doesn't quite work as I expected: excerpt of dovecot.conf: namespace public { separator = / prefix = marketing/ location = maildir:/home/marketing/Maildir:INDEX=%h/ } users belong to the marketing group. $ find /home/marketing/Maildir -ls 4767751 4 drwxrwxr-x 3 marketing marketing 4096 Mar 14 11:57 . 4767752 4 drwxrwsr-x 6 marketing marketing 4096 Mar 14 11:59 ./Maildir 4767753 4 drwxrwsr-x 2 marketing marketing 4096 Mar 14 11:57 ./Maildir/cur 4767754 4 drwxrwsr-x 2 marketing marketing 4096 Mar 14 11:57 ./Maildir/tmp 4767755 4 drwxrwsr-x 2 marketing marketing 4096 Mar 14 11:57 ./Maildir/new 4767756 0 -rw-r--r-- 1 marketing marketing 0 Mar 14 11:57 ./Maildir/dovecot-shared >From there, the namespace is visible from all the IMAP accounts. Now, if a user creates a new folder in this public namespace, here is what I get: 4767757 4 drwx--S--- 5 brice marketing 4096 Mar 14 12:05 ./Maildir/.test 4767758 4 drwx--S--- 2 brice marketing 4096 Mar 14 11:59 ./Maildir/.test/cur 4767759 4 drwx--S--- 2 brice marketing 4096 Mar 14 11:59 ./Maildir/.test/new 4767760 4 drwx--S--- 2 brice marketing 4096 Mar 14 11:59 ./Maildir/.test/tmp 4767761 0 -rw-r--r-- 1 brice marketing 0 Mar 14 11:59 ./Maildir/.test/dovecot-shared 4767762 4 -rw------- 1 brice marketing 6 Mar 14 11:59 ./Maildir/subscriptions As you can see: the cur, new, tmp dir don't have the right permissions (they're not rw for the group), and moreover, the 'subscriptions' file has the same problem. The result is that any other user don't have access to this directory even if it is in a public namespace. Now, the question, is: is that setup could work only with virtual users setup with a static uid/gid ? Is there a mean to implement what I want ? Does using symlinks instead of the namespace could work ? Regards, -- Brice Figureau <brice+dovecot(a)daysofwonder.com>

[Dovecot] mbox to maildir conversion - good idea regarding Outlook?
by Gerhard Hofmann 13 Mar '06

13 Mar '06

Hi list, first of all, many thanks to the Dovecot authors for supplying an IMAP server that works well with M$-Outlook! I have used UW-imapd for quite a while and was annoyed by frequent "imap...timeout..." error messages. Now I'd like to give maildir format a try because I want to use email sub-folders. What are other Outlook users' experiences with maildir? Is it as stable as mbox? Regards Gerhard
