We have used qpopper on our email server RH 9 for long. But recently as the number of people using the server has increased too fast we have to switch to dovecot. Things seem to be OK with the rate users post and receive emails. But from that time very often I see this when top: . dovecot-auth <defunct> And some people sometimes have to restart their outlook to receive emails Could any give us a hand to solve this problem. [Dovecot] Virtual domain support using more than one MySQL database

For historical reasons I am stuck with situation where hosted domain users have their Mailbox info in mysql enabled vpopmail and our ISP's users have their info in nss_mysql. While I can easily move my users from vpopmail's mysql database to something more "native" to Dovecot, I see no problem to configure Dovecot, as I've already configured Postfix, to use this database directly and access mailboxes without problem. And I would not like to make separate auth database for ISP's users, as I don't like to have two watches when one suffice. Under courier-imap, I've configured my vpopmail domains to authenticate using it's vchkpw module, and mysql was left to me to be configured to use nss_mysql. It works well. Is it possible under Dovecot, and how? Is it possible to to MySQL auth using two different databases? It would be the best. TIA, dd

[Dovecot] Dovecot strange behaviors on Solaris

Folks - I've been using Dovecot for some time now, but have only recently upgraded to 1.0alpha4. I'm struggling to get my configuration right and I'm seeing some truly bizarre issues. My Setup: Solaris 2.8 / Thunderbird / Procmail / Dovecot 1.0alpha4 My mail setup is only for me, so Dovecot runs at an odd port and under my userID. All my mail is in my home directory, which is on NFS (NetApp). The main mail receiver is a different machine which mounts my home directory. Typical entry from .procmailrc: :0 * ^(From|To|CC):.*@.*\<si2.org Maildir/.SI2/ Highlights from dovecot.conf: #default_mail_env = maildir:%h/.mail/Maildir:INDEX=/var/tmp/mario/dovecot default_mail_env = maildir:%h/.mail/Maildir:INDEX=MEMORY mmap_disable = yes #lock_method = flock lock_method = fcntl #lock_method = dotlock protocol imap { listen = *:2143 } auth_worker_max_count = 0 auth default { mechanisms = plain userdb passwd { } } When I run as above (INDEX=MEMORY), I have access to all my mail, but I'm seeing literally thousands of .nfs files created all throughout my .mail/Maildir directories, and Thunderbird periodically locks up. As the filesystem fills with useless .nfs files (I deleted 10000 from ONE mailbox directory this morning), everything gets really, really slow, and I suspect this contributes to Thunder bird's problem. But, if I run with the INDEX on a local disk, many mailboxes will not load (the most critical ones, of course...), but also some do. My inbox will list messages, but cannot display any. Others won't even list messages. I'm at a total loss how to proceed, here. I've tried everything I can think of to debug what's going on, but have gotten nowhere (well, I did discover the whole lock_method=fcntl trick). I've tried enabling rawlog, but am just not familiar enough with IMAP to get help from those logs. [Dovecot] Silly newbie questions...

Hi, I'm relatively new to dovecot, less than 48 hours, and I've ran in to a few bugs in the installation/configuration process. Here's my set up. I have my own domain. Within the domain, I have a couple of Linux boxes. So I control both my primary and secondary mail servers. My Linux boxes are a mixture of SuSE 9.2, 9.3 and 10.0 (All based on age of the hardware.) I'd like to use Postfix for my MTA, which I have up and running, but I'd also like to add an IMAP server (hence dovecot) so I can get my mail from any of my PCs and my blackberry.) On my main mail server, I have KDE running and it uses ~/Mail/inbox/(cur,new,...) When I tried to use KDE on my other Linux server, I got it to authenticate and I could see the folders, but I couldn't see any of the mail. (Its all in cur subdirectory.) Now I did notice that when Postfix gets a mail message, its placed in /var/spool/mail/msegel which would imply its using an mbox format. So what am I missing? Hello im new to this list and also to dovecot. This will probably equal a some newbie questions but i hope to learn and teach others :) And it just happens that i have a question. After installing im trying to login, i have set all debug params to true. and in my log i get. dovecot: Dec 02 17:20:50 Info: auth(default): pam(kvapil, 62.181.XXX.XX): pam_authenticate() failed: Authentication failure Im using dovecot-1.0-stable. Any ideas anyone? /kvapil

[Dovecot] corrupt attachments

Not sure if this has already been covered, but any pointers or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We just realized last night that dovecot-stable seems to be corrupting the attachments within users' inboxes. In an attempt to resolve the problem, we upgraded the mail server here to Dovecot 1.0alpha4 but it didn't help. To the best of our knowledge we didn't start experiencing this phenomena until we migrated from Solaris 8/Sparc to Solaris 10/x86 about 3 weeks ago. To be more specific: A non-corrupt attachment can be sitting within a user's mail spool (mbox format) and live there without a problem until an imap client goes to download the attachment via dovecot. At that time, dovecot seems to be stripping the last four characters from each base64 encoded ascii line within the attachment and rewriting the message within the mail spool without those characters. From then on, the attachment is permanently corrupt, even via local unix direct file access clients such as pine or elm. We've temporarily switched back to UW imapd, but users have noticed the decrease in speed - not having the indexing available. Again, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Brian

[Dovecot] Multiple authentication databases and storage locations

Hello Everyone, I am playing with the $subject matter using 1.0alpha4, and thanks to the archives, I lifted this one from Alexander Shikoff off and used it in my setup. auth default { mechanisms = plain user = root passdb pam { args = pop3 } passdb sql { args = /usr/local/dovecot/etc/dovecot-mysql.conf } userdb passwd { } userdb sql { args = /usr/local/dovecot/etc/dovecot-mysql.conf } } It seems to work, but I have virtual users as well as system users. System accounts have their mail stored as follows: default_mail_env = maildir:/home/%u/Maildir While virtual users have this: default_mail_env = maildir:/htdocs/virtual/spool/%d/%u/Maildir Now, virtual users can login because I have used their $default_mail_env in my configuration. I am stuck how to get system users to successfully access their e-mails. Here is the error I get: beastie# telnet 0 110 Trying 0.0.0.0... Connected to 0. Escape character is '^]'. +OK Welcome. [Dovecot] After restart dovecot do not serves IMAPS anymore

I had to restart computer yesterday and now Dovecot has strange behaviour. Dovecot is running and should serve IMAPS, but client Mozilla Thunderbird cannot connect. I tried openssl s_client -connect localhost:993 and it said only CONNECTED(00000003). A time ago when everything was OK, the listing after connection was "a bit" longer than it is now. I remember there was "OK, dovecot ready" or something like that. Now, there is none. Of course in /etc/dovecot.conf: protocols = imaps imaps_listen = * ssl_disable = no So, what's the problem?
