[Dovecot] pop3 retr error
by Marten Lehmann 28 Jun '05

28 Jun '05

Hello, I'm getting the following error while Mozilla Mail is downloading >4000 emails: The RETR command did not succeed. Error retrieving message. Mail server xxx responded: Message is deleted. So what's the error? Can't I retrieve a message, that has been marked as deleted before? If the Mesage-ID wouldn't exist, the error message would be different. I don't know what Mozilla Mail is doing and on which message id it is failing. Also, there's no output in the logfiles. Any ideas? Regards Marten

[Dovecot] quetion about duplicate messages
by Michiel van Es 28 Jun '05

28 Jun '05

Hi, we recently switched from Imap-Uw to Dovecot as a pop3 server. I was wondering why people who have the flag 'Leave messages on server' in their email client (Outlook, Outlook Expres) that they receive duplicates of their stored mail? Is it because Dovecot doesn't know that the messages has already been popped by Imap Uw or is the email client which thinks there are new messages on the server and if so..how can I avoid this behaviour? Thanks in advance for any help. -- Kind Regards, Michiel

[Dovecot] [newbie question]to receive mail
by neo anderson 23 Jun '05

23 Jun '05

hi, i'm newbie to dovecot. lately i install postfix on a server for providing mail service. however, i encounter a problem in receiving mail, i.e., to get mail download to the remote client. (i'm able to send mail through mozilla client, but can't get the sent mail download to the client). what reasons may cause such problem? check several points that i suppose it may have problem, yet can't figure out where the problem may be resulted from. for instance, ========== telnet beg telnet target-server-ip 143 ... * OK dovecot ready. telnet target-server-ip 25 ... 220 host-name.domain.com ESMTP Postfix (ehlo localhost) <---------- hidden command i enter 250-host-name.domain.com 250-PIPELINING 250-SIZE 20971520 250-VRFY 250-ETRN 250-AUTH LOGIN GSSAPI DIGEST-MD5 CRAM-MD5 PLAIN 250-AUTH=LOGIN GSSAPI DIGEST-MD5 CRAM-MD5 PLAIN 250 8BITMIME (quit) <---------- hidden command i enter 221 Bye telnet target-server-ip 110 .... +OK dovecot ready ========== telnet end btw, i'm able to read and write mail through mail program in the target server; simply can't get the mail downloaded to the other client with mozilla mail client (out look also doesn't work). mozilla mail client is version 1.7 . target server using centos 4.0. postfix 2.1.5 dovecot-0.99.11-2.EL4.1 i appreciate any help, sincerely. ___________________________________________________________ How much free photo storage do you get? [Dovecot] miugrating mail to new server
by Gabe Granger 22 Jun '05

22 Jun '05

Hi All, I've just a new server to help with migration of our email, the old email server is using mbox and the new is using Maildir. I've managed to some user mail migrated fine. The new server is only a temp server as I have too many users to migrate easily in one go(Also I want to nuke the current mailserver, remove SuSE and install Debian on it). So what i'm doing it moving users one by one to temp server and converting to Maildir. My question is. I notice that all email files in maildir format end with .<host> when I go to migrate everything to back over to the original server is this going to cause me problem? Ie will the original server now have to be named the same as the temp server so that the maildir format files end with the same .<host> or does that not matter? Any help, advise would be great. Gabe

[Dovecot] question about
by Michiel van Es 22 Jun '05

22 Jun '05

Hi, I am running Dovecot (dovecot-0.99.11-2.EL4.1 on centos 4) and we are switching from newer machines. I copied all usernames from /etc/passwd,/etc/group and /etc/shadow to the new machine. I do not want that every user has it's own /home/$user directory.. When I test my dovecot installation with a telnet 'servername' 110 user test pass test I get this error: ################################################################################ Jun 20 13:22:47 mx01 pop3(aaptest): mbox: Can't create root IMAP folder /home/aaptest/mail: Permission denied Jun 20 13:22:47 mx01 pop3(aaptest): MAIL environment missing and autodetection failed (home /home/aaptest) Jun 20 13:22:47 mx01 dovecot: child 3393 (pop3) returned error 89 ############################################################################## So I changed the MAIL environment to /var/spool/mail (using Sendmail and mbox) Now I get this error: ###############################################################################3 Jun 20 13:27:37 mx01 pop3-login: Login: aaptest [::ffff:10.101.3.37] Jun 20 13:27:37 mx01 pop3(aaptest): open(/var/spool/mail//inbox, O_CREAT) failed: Permission denied Jun 20 13:27:37 mx01 pop3(aaptest): mkdir_parents(/var/spool/mail//.imap/INBOX) failed: Permission denied ################################################################################# Wht is Dovecot trying to AUTOcreate IMAP folders? I do not want Dovecot to do this hence I tell Dovecot to serve only pop3 and pop3s: # imap imaps pop3 pop3s protocols = pop3 pop3s # IP or host address where to listen in for connections. It's not currently # possible to specify multiple addresses. "*" listens in all IPv4 interfaces. # "[::]" listens in all IPv6 interfaces, but may also listen in all IPv4 # interfaces depending on the operating system. You can specify ports with # "host:port". #imap_listen = [::] pop3_listen = [::] Does anyone know how I can dissable this IMAP-AUTOcreate behaviour? Thanks in advance. Michiel

[Dovecot] test73 not compiling with iconv?
by Sean Porter 22 Jun '05

22 Jun '05

I've recently upgraded from test53 to test73 from a source compile on FreeBSD 5.3, and am getting some [BADCHARSET] errors in 73 that I wasn't getting in 53 (specifically with Squirrelmail). When I run one of Squirrelmail's built-in filters, I get the following error: ERROR: Could not complete request. Query: SEARCH CHARSET ISO-8859-1 UNSEEN Subject {14} *****SPAM***** Reason Given: [BADCHARSET] Unknown charset Googling around, I found the admonition on the wiki about chrooted environments: http://wiki.dovecot.fi/moin.cgi/QuestionsAndAnswers#head- e146cada4e103a4a93a736998c64f23b1a8cd312 so I disabled all chroot directives in my config and ran as root, just to see if that was the error. No luck. When running configure with "./configure --with-mysql --with- storages=maildir --with-ssl=openssl", I noticed that I got this error regarding iconv: checking for iconv... no, consider installing GNU libiconv Oddly enough, I do have libiconv-1.9.2 installed in /usr/local: /usr/local/lib/libiconv.a /usr/local/lib/libiconv.so@ -> libiconv.so.3 /usr/local/lib/libiconv.so.3 /usr/local/include/iconv.h and an iconv -l shows support for the charset in question. I tried adding the prefix directive to configure: ./configure --with-mysql --with-storages=maildir --with-ssl=openssl -- with-libiconv-prefix=/usr/local and got the same message. I presume that 53 picked up iconv headers and libraries from LD_LIBRARY_PATH, and now 73 isn't getting it even set explicitly -- I see some ChangeLog entries for iconv files in dovecot source in May, but nothing more. How can I verify that dovecot compiled with libiconv support? Anyone else see the same thing? Thanks, Sean
