The Dovecot 2.1 LMTP server currently always strips the address extension from a recipient address (if recipient_delimiter is set), meaning user IDs cannot contain the recipient delimiter character, e.g. "user+foo" is not supported. This was surprising for me, as Postfix behaves differently in this regard: It first looks up "user+foo", and only then "user". The attached patch works for me and brings Dovecot's behavior in line with Postfix. Please let me know what you think about it.

dear all probably something trivial, just cannot get my way around it, my goal is to get sieve on local-system users too, so postfix hands lda over to dovecot errors with mail for system users: lda(me): Fatal: setgid(12(mail)) failed with euid=501(me), gid=513(Domain Users), egid=513( Domain Users): Operation not permitted (This binary should probably be called with process group set to 12(mail) instead of 513(Doma in Users)) mail storage is in users' homes and these are on nfs3 which bits am I missing, please advise? regards

Hi All, I have compared Dovecot performance to Courier and it appears that as a POP3 server Dovecot is slower in 2 times but as an IMAP server it is faster in 1.5 times. The same node (16CPUs), testing time is 30 min, please see results and dovecot configs attached. Benchmark software is MStone used by Sendmail Inc so is is quite reliable. I do not see anything else to tweak in Dovecot to increase POP3 performance. Can we all have some tips to improve it please ? Hello. I'm created two installations of dovecot-2.2.beta1 with identical config. Without replication each server works good. With replication enabled every changes are replicated between these ones. When I probe remove or move some email in another folder it is disappears and reappears again and again in source folder and appears in destination folder. [Dovecot] FTS what to use ?

Hi I'm currently using dovecot 2.0 with squat fts which does a nice job. However I'm thinking about upgrading to dovecot 2.1 and the wiki isn't clear about which fts can or should be used with it. Is squat support dead ? As the wiki mentions that the config syntax is obsolete, I'm not sure if squat is obsolete also ? If not, what is the new syntax ? But in the case squat is dead.. what is the recommended alternative nowadays ? I don't really need substring search, but it is a nice thing to have. PS : I will be using dovecot 2.1 with maildir thanks -- erik

Hallo Im trying to set up an Postfix and Dovecot mailserver with ActiveDirectory interation. Postfix is doing well and even Dovecot does ... but I have one big problem! My AD Accounts ar stored in two Subfolders ou=Bischoff Benutzer LTT, dc=bischoff-ltt, dc=local ou=Bischoff Benutzer Nbg, dc=bischoff-ltt, dc=local If i use "base = ou=Bischoff Benutzer LTT, dc=bischoff-ltt, dc=local" everything is fine but users from "ou=Bischoff Benutzer Nbg" will not work. Thats ok so far. But when i use "base = dc=bischoff-ltt, dc=local" none user will be found even if i use "scope = subtree". Postfix has no problem with the base set to "dc=bischoff-ltt, dc=local". Ldapsearch has no problem too. I use Version 2.1.12 on Gentoo Linux with a 2003R2 AD Is scope=subtree broken in Dovecot? Must I set some special parameters for Windows AD? Hello, I would like to compile Dovecot using custom ldap libraries, located at a particular custom system location. How should I alter the config process to specify that the include dir is "/usr/local/openldap/include" and the lib dir is "/usr/local/openldap/lib64" and not the standard ones (/usr/include/ and /usr/lib64/ respectively) on RHEL/CentOS 5 (x86_64). Note that all of the above files/folders exist on the file system at the same time. The idea is to build dovecot against current openldap v2.4.x libraries and not against the available (by the OS) ancient openldap v.2.3.x libs. Please, advise. Thanks, Nick

Hi Running dovecot 2.1.7 (from debian repo). We have some old compressed maildir messages with the wrong S= size in the filename (our fault). If I delete index files, log in to the mailbox and try to FETCH the bad message, dovecot complains about the incorrect message size, attempts to fix the filename and disconnects the client. However, it changes the filesize to the size of the message on disk, not the message's uncompressed size. For subsequent clients, the FETCH works, but dovecot logs an error (and maybe re-indexes the mailbox?) and the message UID changes. [Dovecot] sieve reject to wrong address?

Hi all, I have succeed in setting up postfix (to send/receive emails), dovecot to access the folders via IMAP, all using TLS and sieve under dovecot to manage filters. I have also set up a sieve rule to reject those mails whose size exceeds 2 MB... and I'm really proud of everything, because it is my first time!! However, when rejecting the mail, instead of sending a mail saying "I'm sorry blah, blah, blah" to the originary sender, it is sent to the final recipient (that is, me). Do you know how to solve it? Is it a problem from sieve or dovecot? I think is some misconfiguration of my dovecot installation, because the sieve rule is: ################ if size :over 2M { reject text: Ho sento, no accepto cap correu de mes de 2MB de tamany. Sisplau, puja els fitxers mes grans a un servidor i envia'm un link. Gracies. I'm sorry, I do not accept mail over 2 MB in size. Please upload larger files to a server and send me a link. Hello, Due to a misstake I got many duplicate emails in my inbox folder. They are stored in maildir format, so my initial thought was do simply md5sum the mail files and remove the duplicates. This doesnt work because the mails has differinf uids. Any other hints? -- Joakim Verona

Hi, We're about to migrate to dovecot (2.1.7 on wheezy), and I have a question about mail migration. Our 'old' imap mailserver will remain available, and has the same usernames/passwords as our future dovecot mailserver. The question: Is there an easy way to make the old mailboxes available under a subfolder (for example 'oldmail') in the mailboxes on the new mailserver? A bit like mounting an old homedirectory under an 'oldfiles' directory on a new fileserver. This way our users could access/migrate whatever folders they choose themselves, and we would not have migrate all messages to dovecot using scripts like imapcopy, etc. Perhaps using the proxy functionality..? [Dovecot] I can not receive any mail

Hi everybody I'm trying to set-up an IMAPS mail server using dovecot (version 2.1.7) with virtual email accounts for my family. I have already ran through the mysql phase of the virtual email configuration (and I'm quite confident it works well, because I can send mails from the server using postfix to gmail, e.g.). However, I am stucked configuring dovecot. I don't know why is it not running properly. The symptoms are: a) When I connect by using my mail client (kmail), I don't get any error. b) When I ask kmail to check what authentication services are supported by the server, I see that it is able to connect to te server by looking to the server log. c) However, Inbox folder does never show up :S d) When I send any mail from gmail to my server, It is always refused under the reason that there is not such user in the machine (I am sure it is), and nothing shows up in the server log. I have a new CentOS 6 server running Dovecot 2.0.9 It has current patches from CentOS. Pasted below are the version and output from dovecot -n When I run mail -s "test" username test <ctrl-D> mail is written to /var/spool/mail/username and not to /home/username/Maildir/ The user's client software, Thunderbird, logs in but since mail is not written to Maildir it thinks there is nothing (see paste below from /var/log/maillog) How do I get sendmail or what ever MTA processes mail to write to Maildir rather than /var/spool/sendmail? Just looking for some input from other users of the obox (object storage) backend from dovecot.fi. - What challenges/problem were you trying to overcome/solve by using obox? - What kind of architecture did you deploy using obox? (e.g. distributed object storage for performance, or distributed for availability, geographic distribution of email services, etc.) - What complexities, single points of failure, documentation omissions can you highlight having deployed the obox storage architecture? - Did the obox backend support your email services as well as you expected or more? - How was your interaction with Doveoct.fi? Hi, I have an already working dovecot server on Ubuntu 10.04 with self-created packages version 2.1.13. This setup is working prefect. Now that I do not wish to continue using Ubuntu (to much work for Upgrading), I decided to switch to Gentoo, as I had made best experiences in the past… I have installed Dovecot on Gentoo and I copied over all my configs and certs and stuff. Hi All, I've put online a postfix+dovecot+mysql+roundcube server that will grow till serving around 1500 accounts. I've installed the usual cacti graphs, plus the beautiful percona suite for mysql's cacti plus some graphs for iops and iostat. I was lurking around for the best solution to graph dovecot usage, the most detailed possible, in order to prevent and foresee problems. [Dovecot] problems with sieve

Hi all I am running a simple mail server on ubuntu 12.04LTS with postfix 2.9.3 and dovecot 2.1.10. Since this morning sieve doesn't work anymore. I changed the sieve script forth and back but sieve is not working. I also replaced the sieve file with the backup, but no success. But I can't any error messages in the log files indicating any problem with sieve. [Dovecot] Confused about "Authentication Mechanism" and "Password Schemes"

Hi, I am currently setting up a Mailserver and decided to use Dovecot as IMAP/POP3-Server. I read the wiki an thought about how to transmit and store the passwords (I want to use a MySQL-database). I want to use encrypted transmission and encrypted storage. The wiki says: "If you want to use only one non-plaintext mechanism, you can store the passwords using the mechanism's own password scheme. " Ok, one secure mechanism is acceptable in my scenario and the wiki gives a list of supported authentication mechanisms and a list of supported password schemes. But I am missing the relation between the two lists, which mechanism expects which storage scheme? Did I overlooked any easy answer (other then "read the RFCs"). Best Regards Thomas

Hi, I'm running Dovecot 2.1.12 on FreeBSD. I configured Dovecot to use the Squat plugin to provide faster full-text searches. The output of 'dovecot -n' is attached to this mail. However, I just noticed that this plugin doesn't seem to kick in. A raw telnet session seems to confirm this: [..] . SEARCH BODY abcdefg * OK Searched 57% of the mailbox, ETA 0:06 * SEARCH 3425 6254 14710 . OK Search completed (17.262 secs). . SEARCH BODY abcdefg * OK Searched 63% of the mailbox, ETA 0:05 * SEARCH 3425 6254 14710 . OK Search completed (18.651 secs). [..] A SEARCH BODY command doesn't create the dovecot.index.search or dovecot.index.search.uids files mentioned on http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Plugins/FTS/Squat . Also, two subsequent SEARCH BODY invocations don't seem to be any different as far as search time goes. [Dovecot] Dsync didn't updates automatically

Hi, I'm trying to use the Dsync cluster feature in a simple setup, without director, but I'm having some troubles. First of all, I want to know if this functionality syncs the mailbox when the user receive a mail or only when the dovecot starts? Reading the Dovecot mailing list and the design description for a dsync-replicated Dovecot cluster, I understood that it should sync every time a new mail arrives, but it isn't happening in my system. So, can I do this update automatically? If yes, why is it not working properly? Maybe is my configuration files or maybe I'm confusing the capability of this feature. Hi, I'm unable to get past the subject error trying to setup dovecot 2.1.10 on FreeBSD 6.4: right after login the server closes the connection (testing with telnet) I've tried manualy chown()ing auth-master to 666, so permission issues should be ruled out. I'm attaching logs, config and excerpt of ktrace -id. I've built a version with debug symbols, but I don't seem to hit a breakpoint in net_connect_unix on lib/network.c What can I look at? tks -- pica

[Dovecot] Access to deleted mails in mdbox storage

Hi Timo, we are currently running dovecot 2.1.10 using mdbox storage. Sometimes we get requests from users to restore accidentally deleted mails. If the mails got deleted before a backup was made, such mails could of course not be restored from backup. One option to help users in this respect would be to use the lazy expunge plugin. On the other hand I have seen, that the deleted mails stay intact in the mdbox storage until a doveadm purge has been performed. Therefore without using the plugin it is in principle possible to get access to any deleted mails. As in our case the expunge runs once a week while the backup is done daily we can basically recover all mails ever received. My question: doveadm has currently no command similar to doveadm search or fetch to get to deleted mails. Would it be useful to have such a command? As a proof of concept I wrote a little script to mimic the doveadm fetch as closely as possible given the limited amount of information in the mdbox/storage/m.* files and could indeed get access to deleted mails. Do you regard such a procedure (within doveadm) useful or would you recommend nevertheless using the lazy expunge plugin? Hi, We run dovecot 2.1 on 2 nodes with shared nfs storage. Index files are kept on local disk. Second node is usually used only for email snapshots access. If primary node fails it is configured to take place of the primary imap server. Snapshots are additional namespaces with mail from various points in time. We need a way to easly copy multiple messages from snapshots to current mailboxes. It would be best to make current mailbox available as another namespace so one would simply copy messages from one folder to another. Is it safe ? There will be times when given user is writing to the same nfs based Maildir mailbox from 2 nodes both of them having separate index files. Hello guys, Would you be able to help me with this little issue. I bet someone has the same config so if you can copy-paste it I will very appreciate it. So main idea is to enable Dovecot director to authenticate a LDAP user with plain or encrypted password and send the user to back-end Dovecot server after the authentication. According to Wiki it is only possible if we use the master user to communicate to the back-end server. On the back-end Dovecot server it is working fine, I can log in as normal user/user_password or as user*masteruser/master_password. Hi, I get "Unknown scheme: BLF-CRYPT" messages if I try to use Blowfish-encrypted passwords, even though it is supposed to be supported. I'm on 2.1.7, Debian Squeeze backports. I would like to get dovecot running on my laptop so I can transfer a lot of old Email from Thunderbird mailbox files to a hosted zimbra service. However I'm falling at the first hurdle. I'm running Debian squeeze i386 (kernel 2.6.32-5-686) and have installed dovecot-imapd and dovecot-common with synaptic and edited /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf to make sure it has the right protocols and listen instructions. I would like to get it working and locked to SSL only but thought I should start with both unencrypted and encrypted. Can someone help me or point me to the bits of documentation or good web howto or the like that I've missed? Hello, im all new to this but feel i want to have a dedicated server to handle my mails from Gmail and Hotmail Basically, i installed SMS, superb Mini Server (based on slackware), and with that default install i got: dovecot, postfix, fetchmail and sendmail. The postfix part seems to work according to a "telnet localhost 25", now i want to procede with dovecot, as i understand it, its the middle layer between (in my case) postfix and thunderbird. What i expect in the very end is a dedicated server who regulary checks and fetches mails, and lets me have all contacts info in the (already up and running) LDAP server. When i start thunderbird, i want it to go grab those mails from my local machine I am, ofcourse all over manpages, HOWTOs, guides and google, but would certainly appriciate further help and points in the right direction My apologises for any weird beginner mistakes in this post

Dear Sir and/or Madam, I'm the newbie for using Linux, and now our company find the freelancer to change the mbox to maildir. we found that we have mail loss with error massage(ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server. Query: EXPUNGE), after that our freelancer do something to let this massage disappear. But now will still found we have mail loss. What can I do? Hi, when trying to backup mailboxes I noticed some hiccups when the ACL plugin is enabled. Hello, I'm trying to investigate a problem with dovecot/imap dumping core when connecting connecting mith mutt (everything else works). imap(user@domain): Fatal: master: service(imap): child 31752 killed with signal 11 (core dumped) I managed to create a core file and passed that to gdb. Hi, Non-standard fields are mentioned here: http://wiki2.dovecot.org/MailboxFormat/Maildir and they are stated as currently not used. Questions: - am I right that if they will be used, they will be key=value pairs, like fields in the base filename? Like: 1035478339.27041_118.foo.org,S=1000,W=1030:2,S,X=12,A=something - or are they supposed to be flags, like: 1035478339.27041_118.foo.org,S=1000,W=1030:2,S,ABCD - are there any plans to utilize these? [Dovecot] Dovecot Virtual Users with Sendmail

I'm trying to get Dovecot working with Virtual Users and Sendmail on OpenIndiana 151a7. OpenIndiana is the Open Source continuation of OpenSolaris after Oracle tried to kill it off a couple of years ago shortly after acquiring Sun Microsystems. I'm not sure if this is so much a Dovecot problem, as much of a Sendmail problem. I thought this would probably be a better list to start with, though. If not, please let me know. I can log into SquirrelMail with both virtual users, and with system users. I can send mail to system users from both virtual and system users. By deafult, CLucene installs the clucene-config.h header to /usr/lib/CLucene, but fts-lucene tries to include it from /usr/include/CLucene and fails. Here is how it is fixed in Fedora, for instance: sed -i '/DEFAULT_INCLUDES *=/s|$| '"$(pkg-config --cflags libclucene-core)|" src/plugins/fts-lucene/Makefile.in Indeed, Lucene's pkgconfig file reflects the fact that some headers reside in /usr/lib/CLucene. [Dovecot] Can't rename mailboxes, any ideas on how to fix?

I am running Dovecot 2.1.12 under FreeBSD, and I use Outlook 2010 with imap to connect to my server. I know I used to be able to rename mailboxes, as I do this every year at year end, but when I went to rename some mailboxes the start of this year, blamo up popped the message "CANNOT Renaming not supported across conflicting directory permissions". Then only thing that has really been updated here, is Dovecot itself, as I know the FBSD port updates when new versions are released. Any clues on what may have caused this, or how to best correct it? --- Howard Leadmon

Hi all, we use Dovecot 1.2.7 with Maildir, and recently we have set up the latest Roundcube webmail. Inside its config file,it is mentioned that: // By default list of subscribed folders is determined using LIST-EXTENDED // extension if available. Some servers (dovecot 1.x) returns wrong results // for shared namespaces in this case. http://trac.roundcube.net/ticket/1486225 // Enable this option to force LSUB command usage instead. I notice that it seems to work fine, though. We don't have shared namespaces. So my question is: should I change it to LSUB, or will I have problems with my Maildir subscriptions? Thanks

Hi, I have a public folder up and running. This public folder is shared across the company, but when one user makes a new folder then it is not automatically visible to othe users. They need to subscribe manually. Is there a way to automatically subscribe to this? Running a pretty basic setup of imap +pop3 on version 2.1.10 Users are able to create folders in imap that contain "&" the folder on the backend reflects "&-" as it should, you can list folder, but then when you relog into imap then decides it can no longer subscribe to this folder due to invalid UTF characters. Essentially allowing users to lock themselves out by using a very common character in a folder name. Might one of the imap client compatibility plugins in imapd cause this quirkiness ? Should I be coming at this from another direction? Is this a bug?

[Dovecot] Kerberos/GSSAPI auth via .k5login file

Hi, we are currently moving our mailserver to a new server with Dovecot, virtual users in LDAP, Passwords in Kerberos Setup. Everything works fine except for GSSAPI which seems to be a bit buggy. The thing is, that when using a .k5login [1] file it seems that SASL does not get passed the home directory specified userdb. In other words, mails for user1 (see below) are stored in /home/domain.at/user1, while the home dir defined in LDAP is /afs/domain.at/home/user1 (virtual users, so only dovecot, not the system does know about this user and home dir). If I do create a .k5login file in /home/domain.at/user1 with the content "someotheruser(a)DOMAIN.AT", then someotheruser should be able to authenticate himself as user1 via GSSAPI. However, this .k5login file is completely ignored. So it seems to me that the home is not passed on to SASL. If I do add ldap to my nsswitch (for testing only) I additionally have real system users. Now if I create a .k5login in their home defined in LDAP which now also the system knows about everything works just fine. It is still the wrong home since its the one in LDAP and not the one defined by dovecot but at least it shows that our setup is working. See also debug log output below, a failed GSSAPI attempt produces no log output at all. Our System is Debian Wheezy on an amd64 (virtualized), dovecot Version 2.1.7, filesystem is ext4. Everything is tested with Firefox 17.0 on an Ubuntu Lucid client. [Dovecot] dovecot and avahi

I am trying to figure out if I need avahi on my mail server. I see that POP3 and IMAP are services that Avahi can advertise/discover. Does Dovecot work with Avahi and how do you get POP3 and IMAP advertised? And perhaps more importantly, what clients look for mail services this way? I can't find any information on this in the Dovecot documentation ot googling. Perhaps my search fu is low this year. thank you

[Dovecot] corrupt mdbox, force-resync segfaults

I could use some help with a corrupt mdbox. doveadm force-resync is crashing (see below), but I really need just to get this account functioning. What's my next step, as far as deleting index files? [Dovecot] Migration Problem UW-IMAP to Dovecot Maildir

I've just replaced our ancient (10-year old) mail server running Sendmail/UW-IMAP on Solaris with Postfix/Dovecot 2.1.10 running on Linux on new hardware. I opted to go with virtual users and I didn't want to create system accounts and I might end up hosting another department's mail as well. We have a mix of POP3 and IMAP users, roughly 90 total. The POP3 user mailboxes migrated without a hitch, and the IMAP user mailboxes (in what looks like mbox format) migrated well for the INBOX (found in /var/mail/<username> ) but for those few who managed to create local folders and had mail files in their home directories, those mail files were ignored. Is there any clean way to manage to migrate those folders to the new server now? There were no .mailboxlist or .subscription files anywhere on the old mail server. When I was planning the migration, I tried a variety of the methods listed on the UW-IMAP and generic migration pages including dsync, uw2dovecot.pl, and several others. [Dovecot] How To Remove?

hi, i was looking to setup imap on an old PPC G5 mac i have running as webserver and gateway/firewall machine.. found a dovecot-2.1.7-0.pkg online, and it looked like the typical easy install thing.. someplace called rudix made the package.. not much there in way of instructions, but after i finally figured out where the executable had been stuck i tried it, just to see what kinda config errors would be thrown-up.. got the line below.. /usr/local/sbin/dovecot: Bad CPU type in executable so i'm guessing this means dovecot is intel-cpu only? i don't have the time or patience to read all the unix junk, and get a compiler, do all the make files etc.. been years since i did any of that, and don't want to do it again.. the pkg installer did not come with an uninstaller, and since the install is pretty much useless, is there some list of what it installed so i can get rid of it all? thanks, christian

Well our situation is kind of like this: We've been using UW-Imap for 12-15 years, and have loved it. It has a beauty and simplicity to it that is simply wonderful. We're located in a remote part of the Rocky Mountains, and the only internet connection we can get that's faster than a dial-up is a satellite. Lousy upload speeds. Can't host our own sites here. We've been hosting our sites on one of our parishioner's servers for years; but through the years, that's become more and more problematic, and we'd like to do more with it than we currently can. We'd like to set up our own server at our guest house in town. I wanted to use OpenIndiana (Solaris) to take advantage of some of the really amazing features it has. So, I set up UW-Imap on it. Works great. Glory be to our holy God. The problem is, after I got all that working, I went to set up the users for it, and discovered the GUI for creating the users won't allow me to add any users with usernames longer than eight characters. I'm not real dependent on GUI's, and a quick search on the net told me that I can easily add the users with the long user names from the command line. So, I asked on the UW-Imap and on the OpenIndiana list for people's experience about this. Two people said they'd been using long user names on Solaris and BSD for years without any problems, while two others recommended changing to an IMAP server that supports virtual users. One of those recommended Dovecot. So I started looking at Dovecot. I'm not real keen on Sendmail, but to make matters worse, we host our own email on our server here in the mountains. Since we can't get reverse DNS set up for our satellite connection, we have to relay our emails through our parishioner's server, which does have reverse DNS, or else most people's email servers reject them as spam. We also need to be able to send and receive emails from multiple domains. So, I have to be able to figure out how to do both parts of the relay -- our part where we tell our MTA to relay it through the other host, and what will become the server at our guest house to accept those emails and relay them on to the recipients. And the multiple domain issue. I can do all this with UW-Imap and Sendmail, because we've already done all the fighting necessary to get it to work. We've been doing it for years. It just leaves us with the question of whether it's better to go with using UW-Imap on a system that's not designed to support long user names, and possibly getting bit by that, or whether it's better to fight it out trying to learn all this other stuff with a different IMAP server and MTA? Fun! I could probably get Cyrus IMAP to work with Sendmail, because I tried it briefly years ago and already have gone through the grief of figuring that out. But I didn't particularly care for it. One of the things I like most about UW-Imap -- and Dovecot shares this -- is that it's easy to backup, restore inadvertently deleted directories, and to move emails from one server to another. From what I remember, Cyrus wasn't so friendly about that. And it was more difficult to administer than UW-Imap and Dovecot. After reading the 13-page article Ken posted this afternoon, I started looking at Postfix. My impression is, that maybe this might be a good route to try. Dovecot - PostFix - and if I'm going to go through all that, I might as well go with Sieve, instead of Procmail, like we've been using for years. I used Sieve briefly with Cyrus. I've never been thrilled with Procmail. So, with all that background, if anyone would like to share any suggestions or advice, I would certainly appreciate it. [Dovecot] dovecot crashing?

Happy holidays! I am experiencing an issue when trying to check my mail using IMAP. with Dovecot I have tried checking my mail using a full GUI client (Thunderbird) and telnet. Both times I get disconnected before all of my messages can be downloaded and I see an error in my mail log. Postfix doesn't allow external hosts to connect & relay mail, which explains what you're seeing. Why you're seeing that is better addressed on the postfix list, although you seem to have told postfix to use Dovecot for sasl auth, so maybe, since this is the Dovecot list you should send your Dovecot conf so we can see why it's not working. Also, if you ask on the postfix list you will be asked for the out-put of postfinger which can diagnose sasl problems. Simon

[Dovecot] Update 1.2 -> 2.0 ... INBOX away?

Hi, yesterday I did an update from dovecot 1.2 to 2.0.19 (Ubuntu 10.04 -> 12.04). After fixing the configuration dovecot startups as it should, but with one error, I don't understand: the INBOX will not be delivered to the Mailclient and will not be filled by "deliver". Instead, dovecot create the two dirs "new" and "cur" directly in "Maildir". the filesystem looks now like: domain/user1/Maildir/INBOX # official INBOX domain/user1/Maildir/new # new mail domain/user1/Maildir/cur # read mail We have searched for an configuration error, but didn't found anything - or did not see one ;-) Maybe there is someone in the list, which see our error in a moment? We are using only imap/s and managesieve, no pop3. Maildir-Layout is FS. I just install Dovecot and postfix. When I'm pull dovecot I see in the log that its checking for mail. if a put a test message locally on the server I can pull the message down to my cell phone and other computers. The mdbox-format with the altstorage-feature is quite nice and important. But we're having much more then >> 30 TB of maildata and doing an fsck on huge partitions takes too much (down-) time for our mailsystem. It would be much easier, if Dovecot would be able to use at least THREE storage-paths for his m-Files (and not just TWO like now). Having an altstorage1 and altstorage2, we would be able to move away all mails from on altstorage-mountpoint, we could put this storage-moungpoint into "maintenance" and do an fsck without Downtime for Dovecot. It would be nice having a doveadm-feature to put a altstorage-path in "maintenance-mode", so to move easily away all m-files to other alt-storage-paths and to let Dovecot know not to use this locked partition. Having even more then 3 storage-paths would be nice for huge setups: In this case we could easily use different SMALLER partitions without having just two or three huge partitions > 15 TB. The architecture of the altstorage-system is nice and simple. Wouldn't it be easily possible to look (at least) in three, then just in two places for a m-file? What about a "hash_dir"-system for the storage? What about a configuration-parameter like altstorage_dirs=4 which would mean, that there are 4 storage-mountpoints that could be addressed by "%m": mail_location = mdbox:/vmail/%d/%n/mdbox:altstorage/alt/%m/%d/%n In this case, Dovecot could easily use all existing partitions automatically "round-robin". Or maybe it would be better to tell Dovecot the partitions by: altstorage_dirs_existing = 1,2,3,4 altstorage_dirs_newmail = 1,4 so it would be very easy to tell Dovecot in which partitions he has to look for m-files and where he is allowed to save round-robin new e-mails. With this setup it's easy to put a partition in maintenance mode. I reported a problem with disappearing emails on my Apple Mountain Lion server. Not sure if it ever stopped but I do know it is happening again. Help!!!! This is a company email server. [Dovecot] Using -module flag on sieve libs

Some modern distros (Mageia, Mandriva) use -no-undefined as a default linker flag for building software. However, undefined symbols are OK if the binary being linked is a plugin. To detect plugins, build system looks for presence of "-module" libtool flag in makefiles. There are two libraries in Pigeonhole that couldn't be linked with -no-undefined: src/lib-sieve/plugins/mailbox/libsieve_ext_mailbox.la src/lib-sieve/libdovecot-sieve.la These modules do contain undefined symbols, but they are not linked against library that provides them. It would be good if corresponding makefiles contained "-module" flags, so that build system could selectively turn off that -no-undefined linker flag. Please see proposed patch (attached). My old setup uses mysql-crypt for the password. MYSQL_CRYPT_PWFIELD password and users could be added to the table with: INSERT INTO `users` (`email`, `password`, `quota`) VALUES ('sales(a)example.com', ENCRYPT('secret'), 10485760); But where this was all simple and no choices, I get to figure out what to do with my dovecot setup. Hi, Just trying to consolidate my knowledge of Dovecot and I want to understand various things rather than just key out lines of config in dovecot.conf with the hope of it working. What I wanted to clarify is my understanding the "socket listen" section of the config file. From my limited understanding, this section details how other processes can access the userdb defined in Dovecot. The master socket is used for "internal" processes which is mainly dovecot-lda so that when Dovecot receives mail it knows where to deliver it and client is defined for "external" processes, for example Postfix who would use the info to determine if a user existed. Would you say this is a fair (albeit) dumbed down!!) synopsis of sockets and their purpose? Thanks in advance! Tim

[Dovecot] Non-dovecot user looking for feedback

I've been using UW-IMAPd for neigh on forever (at least since 2001). But, as it's basically stalled, and I'm about to update the hardware that is my mail server, I thought it was time to review existing open-source IMAP servers. Dovecot is the top three in my looking. The other of the top three candidates, because I know of people who've used it, is Cyrus IMAP. So, I should note that my thoughts are "uw-imapd, because I already know how to use it", "Cyrus, because someone I know/trust liked it years ago", and dovecot, because "it seems stable, professional, and to meet all of my needs". I guess the biggest question I have is how files/folders are stored in the filesystem. uw-imapd has a "mbx" format that all of my folders are in, and also has support for mbox and maildir (i think). mbx had some advantages for speed access, which would be unimportant I assume with dovecot's indexes, but IIRC there was also some reason the mbox format coped poorly with multiple clients accessing the same folder at the same time. So, am I right that dovecot supports only the "one big full file" mbox format, and the maildir format? And if so, is it known to allow multiple simultaneous IMAP clients to access and monitor and/or modify the same folder simultaneously? After those questions, it's just a "what do you think the pros and cons of each are?" I know asking in this forum, that I will get most if not all votes for Dovecot. And that's fine, as long as you have specific reasons why it would be better for someone with only a handful of users and minimal time available to administer the systems in question. Thanks! We have mboxes and maildirs and in dovecot.conf mail_location = mbox:/var/spool/vhosts/%d/dovecotprivate/%n:INBOX=/var/spool/vhosts/%d/%n Error: User archiv(a)xyz.de doesn't have home dir set, disabling duplicate database Dec 19 20:37:03 lda(archiv(a)xyz.de): Error: sieve: sieve script file path ~/.dovecot.sieve is relative to home directory, but home directory is not available. Hello list, I'm really hoping someone can point me in the right direction on this. I set up a server using Postfix with LDAP lookups to Active Directory. Postfix delivers to maildir. Dovecot IMAP and POP are working correctly using PAM Kerberos to authenticate via Active Directory. I want to add spam filtering, so I'm trying to set up Postfix to use dspam which is then supposed to use Dovecot LDA to deliver messages to the mailbox instead of having Postfix deliver to the Maildir. I can't get any deliveries to Dovecot LDA to get past passdb lookup. Hi all, my problem seems to be a cosmetic one (again). According to the docs: subscriptions: "yes" (default) if this namespace should handle its own subscriptions. If "no", then the first parent namespace with subscriptions=yes will handle it. Therefore is no way to create the following scenario: three namespaces (private, shared, public) the private namespace has to handle its own subscriptions the private namespace setup with "prefix = INBOX." the both shared and public namespace setup with "subscriptions = no" cause there is no so called "parent" namespace.
