Hello, I'm setting up a new Dovecot sever to replace an old Cyrus server, and need to keep things as consistent as possible. I have a couple local accounts, like junkmail and notjunkmail that users get shared access to, and can drop things in to train sa-update. [Dovecot] Marking messages read / retaining date with Sieve

I'm trying to mark several hundred thousand messages as read as they are delivered via dovecot-lda(1). (I'm importing some mail from another format for migration purposes.) I've been able to do this with Sieve, but it has the side effect that the messages' received and saved dates are set to the current date, and Apple Mail (at least) uses one of these to display the message date. Without the Sieve filter in place, the dates are retained based on the From_ line as I would like. Does anyone know of any way I can either - retain the date when delivering using Sieve? - systematically mark a specific set of messages as read *after* delivery instead, perhaps with doveadm(1)? (even marking *everything* read would work in this particular case. I couldn't find any way to set flags with doveadm) Thanks, --Bret

[Dovecot] POLL: v2.2 to allow one mail over quota?

Currently if user is 1MB under quota and someone tries to deliver mail that is over 1MB, Dovecot rejects the mail. But smaller mails aren't rejected probably for days. So user might not even realize that they didn't receive one of the mails. Also having a user "almost over quota" is a rather strange state I think. So what do you think about v2.2 allowing delivery of one last mail even if it brings the user over quota? Except add a limit that if the message size is as much as the user's entire quota limit it wouldn't be added (or 50% or ..?). Also IMAP wouldn't allow this, since user would get an error anyway. I could make this also optional, but if nobody really wants to keep the old behavior there's really no point in adding the option.

[Dovecot] Keyword Flags

I mostly use Mutt to read mail but today I fired up Thunderbird. I have a shell script that looks for new mail, which looks for files in cur/ and new/ ending with the server hostname or a comma. When I fired up TB it seems that all new mail has been given a flag of ,a which I gather means it matches a keyword. My questions are: How did this happen? Did TB do something strange to my mail when it fetched headers? If I change my search parameters to ',[a-z]' will this only catch new mail? [Dovecot] Disabling auth caching just from one passdb

Hello, I'm using various password databases (one of them is a ldap database, which is the used for users connecting with email clients, and the other with pam, using a pam module integrated with our SSO that is used from our webmail). I would like to disable password caching in my pam database (because 'passwords' provided by our SSO are single use tokens, so caching them has no benefit), but not in the ldap. As far as I know, auth_cache_size is the option to enable caching in all databases. But, is there any option I could use to disable it in a specific password database? -- Angel L. Any guess at what would cause this? Feb 7 21:20:53 server dovecot: imap(user): Panic: file mailbox-list-fs-iter.c: line 447 (fs_list_get_roots): assertion failed: (full_fs_access) (Sorry, no core dump) According to my logs, this user couldn't start an IMAP session for a 2 hour stretch for hundreds of connections. Then the problem seemed to have went away. I logged back as that user using a master password, but couldn't recreate this problem. The backtrace is just hex numbers (stripped executables) and I didn't drop privileges, so it refused to drop core, so that's no help. Joseph Tam <jtam.home(a)gmail.com>

[Dovecot] Moving index files on another disk: no troubles but need more assurances

Hi, I'm using dovecot 1.2.15 on debian squeeze with maildir, and I want to move index files out of the mailboxes disk to reduce disk I/O. I need to get the assurance that the switch is completely transparent to my clients (IMAP and POP). I read the wiki documentation and have found this thread (http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2009-September/042665.html) which makes me confident, even if it speaks of a older version and only pop3. So I set up a test server, copied a true mailbox and changed mail location from: mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir to mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir:INDEX=/srv/indexes/%1n/%n (all users under the same domain, no need to use %d). On the IMAP side all seems to work fine, new indexes are created in the new location (dovecot.index.log on 1st access, dovecot.index.cache on message manipolation). A test client (evolution) doesn't notice at all, and I have verified via a telnet imap session that UIDs don't change. But I see that when I move the indexes the IMAP HIGHESTMODSEQ response changes and is reset to 1. Can this baffle the clients? On the rfc I don't found reference to this status walking backwards. Need I to verify that all messages have the virtual size (W=nnnn) in the file name (the mailboxes are from a previous cyrus installation, then we switch to dovecot 1.2)? What other test you suggest that checking UIDL on the pop3 side? What happens if the indexes disk disappears (broken or removed from bay or all paths down for FC/iscsi)? Can dovecot 1.2 continue with INDEX=MEMORY as for a disk full? Sorry for the many questions.... [Dovecot] cPanel && Dovecot 2.x

I would like to know if dovecot 2.0.9+ can work with cPanel. I know there is a template for it in cPanel 11.34.1, but when I tried to switch to 2.0.9 (from 1.2.17), it didn't work. I didn't put too much time to test it since I only have one live system to test it with, and I have many customers hosted on this server and I cannot disrupt the service. Has anyone been able to make this work, and if so, is there anything special to do other than rebuilding the config with "/scripts/builddovecotconf" ? Thanks.

I am trying to configure a dovecot2 IMAP server to inter-operate with a active directory to authenticate users. The users should be able to login without a password on a domain-joined client(Outlook). Is it possible to do this only with kerberos? I don't want to put a crappy winbind on my mailserver... I already configured my server to authenticate via kerberos(GSSAPI), but Outlook does not even try to authenticate using GSSAPI, it rather uses PLAIN. I would appreciate any help, many thanks in advance.

[Dovecot] dsync timeout?

I'm using dsync for a regular backup. The backup system flocks so that two cannot run at the same time, which is generally a good thing. The problem is that it seems like dsync sometimes goes off into the weeds and never comes back, leaving a process running and doing nothing forever, hogging the lock and causing my backups never to run again. I just finally figured out that was what was causing the backups not to run on this system was this process: root 17836 0.0 0.0 40888 1600 ? S 2012 0:00 ssh -i /root/.ssh/backmaildir_id_rsa backmaildir@arg /usr/bin/dsync -u foobar server yeah, that has been running since 2012 :( root:/tmp# strace -p 17836 Process 17836 attached - interrupt to quit select(8, [4], [], NULL, NULL very exciting... There doesn't seem to be a timeout in dsync, but perhaps there should be? At this point my only option is to write a cronjob that will look for dsync processes that are over a certain amount of time old and then kill them, after I do that I will need to take a shower because that is a very dirty solution :P thanks for any ideas, or help! micah --

Hello, I'm currently experimenting with the 2.1.x series and am facing a behavior I can't explain; I must be doing something wrong and probably miss the obvious... ;-) This is a very basic build on Mac OS X 10.8.2: ./configure --prefix=/_COD/dovecot-2.1.14 --sysconfdir=/_ETC --localstatedir=/_VAR --with-sqlite --with-ldap=yes (Yes, I know, a strange layout, yet very convenient for testing various things here.) But this is noticed by the master process: dovecot[2997]: pop3(user2): Fatal: master: service(pop3): child 3113 killed with signal 9 Note that it is possible to connect afterwards as user2 through imap. Hi list, I recently tried to backup mailboxes from an older server machine to a new one in order to move the service to the new machine. Both machines are in the same LAN, I used this command: dsync -R -u username backup ssh -i .ssh/id_rsa username(a)192.168.1.11 /opt/local/bin/dsync and I get this error: dsync-local(dz): Error: Invalid server handshake: dsync-server 2 dsync-remote(dz): Error: Invalid client handshake: dsync-client 1 # lokal machine: dovecot 2.0.19apple1 running on Mac OS X 10.8.2 Server using standard Apple-Dovecot-Configuration # remote machine: 2.1.12 running on Mac OS X 10.4 using PAM authentication I cant seem to find any documentation to this error, nor do I find any dsync entries in the logs of both machines. [Dovecot] File permissions used for automatically created mailbox

Hi, I'm running Dovecot 2.1.12 on FreeBSD (quite successfully so, thanks for this nice piece of software!). One thing which is slightly annoying though is that automatically created mailboxes (I have lda_mailbox_autocreate set) don't have the file permissions I'd like them to have. I'm using a vmail-based system, i.e. all mail is owned by vmail:vmail; another member of the vmail group is called 'backup', which has read access to all mail in order to create backups. All mail is stored beneath /home/vmail, e.g. /home/vmail/frerich/Maildir Right now, newly created mailbox directories (e.g. /home/vmail/bob) have 0700 permissions, but I'd like to have 0750 for all directories and 0640 for all files so that all files and directories are group-readable for backup purposes. Does anybody know whether this is configurable somehow? Imagine situation with two users where first prefere another language that second. mailbox Sent { special_use = \Sent } for english speaking users and mailbox "Odeslaná pošta" { special_use = \Sent } for czech speaking users. hello everyone, i'm new to this list im running dovecot as imap+pop (2.1.12) and roundcube (0.8.4) as client. having problems on saving to imap folders, with errors on some accounts my folder structure is as follow: /home/user/.maildir /home/user/.maildir/.Drafts /home/user/.maildir/.Junk /home/user/.maildir/.Sent /home/user/.maildir/.Trash /home/user/.maildir/.Archives /home/user/.maildir/.Archives.2010 ... i'm very confused with the namespace settings. i don't understand what is the correct way to configure it. don't need public or shared folders. on dovecot.log i can see this error with my account (and all the others), but it seems to work ok using roundcube: imap(gsansone): Error: autocreate: No namespace found for mailbox: Junk with a few accounts, i have this on roundcube log: IMAP Error: Could not save message in Drafts in /var/www/localhost/htdocs/mail/program/steps/mail/sendmail.inc with error on saving to imap folder in roundcube UI send you attached the output of 'dovecot -n' and the roundcube configuration related to folders. does anyone have any suggestion? thanks in advance. -- G. Hello, I installed a few weeks ago the Dovecot package on a Debian stable along with postfix, everything works fine except the sieve filter. I followed the howto found on the internet (google: debian postfix dovecot sieve). I'm able to view and modify sieve rules with roundcube or thunderbird plugins, but the rules are not applied when a message arrives and all messages arrive in INBOX. I'm about to replace my old server. Both servers are on my internal network. The old one ist running debian lenny(32bit) with dovecot 1.0.15 and the new one debian Wheezy with dovecot 2.1.7. I set up the users on both systems identically (same gid uid). My first attempt was tho simply rsync the Maildirs along with the homes. Both deovecot versions are set up with the maildir format, but this results in ~30% doublicated mails on the new server. I then learned about doveadm/dsync, only to figure out that this isn't available in v 1.0.15 and therefor won't work. So which could be the most painless way to solve that?

[Dovecot] dsync backup questions

Hi, I'm currently trying to setup remote backups of my emails but i'm running into issues (mdbox format, indexes and storage in the same folder hierarchy). Local backup command: dsync -u "my_user" backup /backups/my_user (1) Recently, I noticed that the local backup takes up twice the size as the original mail location (8gb vs. 4gb). I purged alot of emails from the original location, so the size shrunk, but the local backup just keeps on getting bigger. I couldn't find any dsync option that would delete extra emails. - Question: Why isn't the local backup synced properly and remove the extra emails? (2) What is the best why to copy this local backup to a remote location that does NOT have the possibility to run dsync. - Question 1: is rsync safe to use and will this data work for restore? - Question 2: Would it be safe to simply rsync the original mail_location to the remote server? I searched the net, but it seems that mdbox is tricky to backup. Thanks in advance, -Joe

Hello, I've upgraded our servers and now dovecot seems to be running out of memory when accessing my own mailbox (and only mine, which is in a way pretty fortunate): dovecot: imap(abelard-a): Error: mmap() failed with file /vmail/a/b/abelard-a/dovecot.index.cache: Cannot allocate memory imap(abelard-a): Fatal: pool_system_realloc(131072): Out of memory /vmail/a/b/abelard-a/dovecot.index.cache is 224MB big and my mailbox is 72% full of 8GB. any idea of what is happening? Version 2.1.10 For some reason Mutt doesn't list any info about IMAP folders and seems to ignore folder_format. My questions is does anyone have any workarounds for this?

Hi, during the weekend I upgrade my mail servers from dovecot 2.1.13 to dovecot 2.1.14 (and rebuild dovecot-2.1-pigeonhole-0.3.3). After upgrade all works fine, but today the load avarage un MXs is doubled. Mailboxes are in Maildir/ on NFS and I'm using dovecot as LDA and dict quota only for quota usage. May be a problem with the new version? [Dovecot] lmtp-proxying in 2.1 slower than in 2.0.14 ?

We upgraded our two dovecot directors from v2.0.14 to dovecot-ee 2.1.10.3 this week, and after that mail seems to be flowing a lot slower than before. The backend mailstores are untouched, on v2.0.14 still. After the upgrade we've been hitting process_limit for lmtp a lot, and we're struggeling with large queues in the incoming mailservers that are using LMTP virtual transport towards our two directors. I seem to remember 2.1 should have a new lmtp-proxying code. Is there anything in this that maybe needs to be tuned that's different from v2.0 ? Hello, I have an intermittent but frequent problem using dsync backup. The command outputs: dsync-local(user): Error: proxy client timed out Then dies with exit code 75. Any subsequent attempts to re-run the backup invariably fail like this: dsync-local(user): Warning: Destination mailbox INBOX has been modified, need to recreate it before we can continue syncing dsync-local(user): Error: read() from worker server failed: EOF dsync-local(user): Error: msg-copy returned invalid input: dsync-local(user): Error: remote: dsync-remote(user(a)domain.com): Error: Can't delete mailbox INBOX: INBOX can't be deleted. dsync-remote(l_user(a)domain.com): Error: command MSG-SAVE failed dsync-local(user): Warning: Mailbox changes caused a desync. You may want to run dsync again. The syntax I am using is: dsync -u $user backup \ ssh -i <idfile> <user@host> \ dsync -u l_$user We have this running in a script that loops through all users. The error happens mostly on the larger mailboxes but I've seen it succeed on the largest ones then fail on smaller. One mid-sized account now fails consistently. The backup is running from a Mac OS PPC server running 2.1.12 The target is a Linux Intel box running 2.1.13, but I had the same problem sending to a Mac OS Intel on 2.1.12. Mdbox in all cases. [Dovecot] Overloading IMAP Server

Hi All, I am having an issue with dovecot IMAP reading and writing to one specific mailbox. I have a check email delivery script that sends out a email and then logs into dovecot to check if the mailbox that the message has been delivered to. However, the servers that send these messages send them in bunches depending on how many postfix spools it is checking. So I could get 60 messages all being sent to 1 mailbox and then having to read that same mailbox to check if the message actually got delivered. I am using postfix as the MTA and dovecot is actually delivering the message to the mailbox I am getting a lot of errors such as the following: Could not connect to IMAP server imap failed: IMAP RECEIVE CRITICAL - Could not select INBOX Any ideas as to what I can tweak in dovecot to allow these messages to be verified. Currently, I'm using the Dovecot Antispam plug-in with great success. Everything works as expected. However, I would like to change the plug-in's behavior such that it simply sends a copy of a message that is moved from Inbox -> Junk (or Junk -> Inbox) to an administrator, instead of calling sa-learn (I'm using SpamAssassin) automatically. Basically, I would like to be able to review messages that end-users submit for training before they are actually fed to sa-learn. Has anyone had a similar need? If the Antispam plug-in already supports this, if the necessary commands can simply be added to the shell script that Antispam calls, or if there is a better method altogether, any help is greatly appreciated. Hi, we are running dovecot 2.1.13 We have 2 proxies with director and 4 mail servers. we use LDAP when we execute doveadm-quota -A and doveadm with few output lines, its works fine. When we use doveadm-search or doveadm-mailbox with a lot of output information the command stops the execution and the command no ends. The connection to one of the 4 mailserver has finished at this moment. I have made some tests and i have found that if we use only one mailserver the commands works fine. Hello I'm trying to keep my users from using the "redirect" action with pigeonhole from dovecot 2.0.21. Hopefully there won't be v2.1.15 anytime in near future. (v2.2.rc1 does look close though.) BTW. I know there are quite a lot of mails I haven't replied to in dovecot list. Too busy for now.. + doveadm acl recalc command added - v2.1.11+ had a race condition where it sometimes overwrote data in dovecot.index.cache file. This could have caused Dovecot to return the same cached data to two different messages. - mdbox: Fixes to handling duplicate GUIDs during index rebuild

Dovecot version: 2.1.13 OS: Centos 6.3 CPU: 64bit x86 There appear to be two related errors in the decode2text.sh file (which can be used for indexing/ searching attachments). - The layout of "$formats" has repeated values for pdf, ppt, etc, so you should only match the pattern once by adding -m1 - The layout of "$formats" has the file extension in the second "column", so the "start of line"(^) match doesn't work as is. Original problem line (from ./src/plugins/fts/decode2texh.sh): fmt=`echo "$formats" | grep -w "^$content_type" | cut -d ' ' -f 2` Here are two options that appear to solve the problem. The first option is probably preferred, since it matches exactly the extension to the second "column". 1) switch the order of commands (cut & grep) and add -m1. for example: fmt=`echo "$formats" | cut -d ' ' -f 2 | grep -w -m1 "^$content_type"` -OR- 2) add "m1" and remove "^". for example: fmt=`echo "$formats" | grep -w -m1 "$content_type" | cut -d ' ' -f 2`

[Dovecot] passdb to add extra fields?

Some passdbs like PAM can't really return any extra fields. Also some people have wanted to combine users' data from different passdb/userdbs so that for example you'd have userdb passwd give the uid/gid/home, but then you'd also have some other userdb give quota limits. So I was thinking something like this: passdb { driver = pam } passdb { driver = sql include = yes } or: userdb { driver = passwd } userdb { driver = passwd-file include = yes } I'm not sure about two things: 1) Should there be a way to replace all of the existing fields instead of just adding new ones? 2) Any thoughts of a better name than "include"? With passdb it would mean that it's included only when the authentication failed for some other passdb. With userdb it means it's included only if a previous userdb lookup succeeded. Also there are already "deny" and "pass" settings. Interaction with them can be somewhat confusing.. Maybe all of these should be replaced with: type=deny: Same as old deny=yes (deny auth if user is in list) type=precondition(?): Same as pass=yes (require another passdb to match) type=postcondition(?): Require user to exist in this passdb/userdb as well, adding any extra fields in it. type=add: Add any extra fields, if the user exists at all. (Better ideas for the names here? Is even "type" a good name?) Then maybe a new setting to delete existing extra fields .. or perhaps just extend passdb { override_fields } so that having "-field" would delete the field if it already existed..

[Dovecot] A lot of dovecot/imap processes

Hello! I have a dovecot installed and many users could login via IMAP over SSL (40 users at same time aprox). Users could have "Check mail every X time" enabled in their client (Thunderbird or K-9 mail) - Is this required feature? I noted that if I disable it I still getting news mails without having to check for new mails manually - . I noted that dovecot is creating a lot of process (dovecot/imap and dovecot/imap-login) and is requiring more and more RAM. I think that every login starts a process but never is endend. But if I put process_limit = 100, in the log appers a message that dovecot is aborting logins (and I noted that new connections sometimes couldn't login). Anyway the mailserver is working well, but I'm afraid of the consumtion of RAM. Is that normal? Dear all, I am hoping someone can help me with a problem that I have been trying to fix for days. Using postfix and dovecot 2.0.19 on Ubuntu 12.04 with LDAP authentication and virtual users and domains. Basically I want to setup both shared and public mailboxes. The shared part is working fine, ie I can share folders successfully and other uses can see them. However when I try and create sub folders in the public folder they don't show up in the client. I have tried creating them in manually in the filesystem ie mkdir .folder and also via thunderbird. I have read through the dovecot wiki's several times over and still cannot see why it won't work. I have debug turned on and these are the log messages I get in syslog when I start up thunderbird: acl: No lookup right to mailbox: public/folder acl vfile: file /home/example.com/public/.folder/dovecot-acl not found acl vfile: file /home/example.com/public/dovecot-acl not found So I create the dovecot-acl file manually in public and set the right file system permissions and the errors go away, yet the folder still doesn't get created despite the following getting logged in syslog. Dear All, I have noticed that dovecot.index is not generated straight away if you have just a few emails in the mailbox. Instead of that dovecot.index.log is modified and accessed by clients. Only if the number of email reaches some level then it creates dovecot.index in user mailboxes. Can somebody please tell me when (in my understanding of the process) the index log file drops all data into the mail index file. What does trigger that ? [Dovecot] password schemes in dovecot

Hey there, I'm using the latest dovecot 2.1.13 In the wiki http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Authentication/PasswordSchemes BLF-CRYPT is listed, but i can't use it. "doveadm pw -l" doesn't show it. And i'm unsure about how I am supposed to use the different SHA schemes, since they always output different hashes for the same password. MD5 is working fine, but I'd rather not use it. Is the wiki outdated or how do i get BLF-CRYPT working? thanks, simon

Sendmail 8.14.4 dovecot 2.0.9 I have sendmail working and it is sending mail to /var/mail/%u. I have dovecot working in that I can move emails into IMAP folders and I can send email through IMAP. I have set up dovecot to use mdbox based on the following: mail_location = mdbox:~/mail However, I seem to be lacking a key piece of information. Sendmail is sending the mail to /var/mail/%u as a mbox (single file for all emails) format. Dovecot wants to read the mail in mdbox (Multiple messages per file, but unlike mbox multiple files per mailbox.) So the two programs are not working together. So, I cannot get dovecot to read new emails at /var/mail/%u. So I tried changing to the following: mail_location = mdbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u However, dovecot complains that it is NOT a directory. That is because sendmail is sending as mbox format. I have tried two lines of “mail_location” but that did not work. example mail_location = mdbox:~/mail ----> for dovecot mail_location = mbox:INBOX=/var/mail/%u -----> for sendmail I have tried LMTP and dovecot-lda. LMTP – I could not see any difference with this added or not. Dovecot-lda – I have had issues getting it configured. Thanks for any help! Hello all, I've running a Dovecot's installation for several years without problems but since last system upgrade (Dec 26) I'm facing a kind of sync issue with the /var/mail/ inbox files. We have got mobile and desktops IMAP clients (mostly Mozilla Thunderbird). The problem is that /var/mail/ files (mbox) aren't updated: we can delete mail from clients but they persist in de /var/mail, so the same user can see the mail again from other IMAP client. Logs seems to be correct. Many thanks in advance. [Dovecot] Dovecot unable to access the shadow file

I am installing Dovecot-2.1.13 on Slackware 13.37.0 for the first time to replace ipop3d and I have overcome all of the roadblocks as they have developed except this last one and I finally have to say “uncle”. The error messages that are showing up in the dovecot.log are as follows. With that in mind I looked at all the configuration and .ext files and the only file I could find that would indicate that root should be checking the shadow file is 10-master.conf. In that file it said the default service auth-worker was root but since it was apparently not working I removed the hash mark and made it explicit. It still didn’t work. As a last resort even though it was not good practice I tried adding user dovecot to the group shadow but that did not work either. It still says dovecot is not in the group shadow even though it is. Hi at all, in our test environment, I'm playing with dovecot 2.1.13 configured as imap/pop/managesieve proxy. It is configured to authenticate users with ldap and it works very well. Now, I'd like to temporary disable some users's login, because we are moving to another storage, and I wouldn't stop imap service at all. I've found on Dovecot wiki that I could use 'nologin' extra field, but I wasn't been able to get it work. [Dovecot] Permissions when running `dovecot --exec-mail imap`

Hi, I'm running dovecot 1.2.15, on Debian squeeze. /var/mail is owned by group "mail" with permissions "g+rwxs,o=". The mail_privileged_group setting is set to "mail". I am trying to access mail on a remote machine with mutt by tunnelling mutt though ssh and running `dovecot --exec-mail imap` on the mail server. But I frequently get errors in the mail server's logs about not being able to create dotlock files when accessing my INBOX this way. This makes sense -- I'm running dovecot as a regular user, so it isn't able to write to /var/mail as group "mail". I notice that on the dovecot wiki[1] it is suggested that sudo is used to set uid/gid before running `dovecot --exec-mail imap`. But I don't actually want to set the uid, just the gid. And I also have sudo disabled at the moment. So I was wondering about another solution... Would it be acceptable to setgid the dovecot executable and change it's group to "mail" (i.e., `chgrp mail dovecot` and `chmod g+s dovecot`)? Would this pose some kind of security risk? We drive mboxes and maildirs and the dovecot-server is running very well and everthing is fine, but I get the following warning in the dovecot-lda-errors.log when a mail is delivered to a mbox. Hello, I upgraded my dovecot server (1.2 -> 2.1), from debian backport because it was a little slow (wait 5-6 sec) when I opened some mail (but not every mail). Unfortunately, the mail open speed didn't increase. I think it's an index problem. Have you idea for fixing? [Dovecot] Fixing bad maildir message sizes

Hello. As stated in my previous message, we have some old compressed maildir messages with incorrect sizes in the filename. These messages cause dovecot 2.x problems. I'm trying to write a script to crawl all our messages, check the actual message size and if necessary, fix the filename. However, when I do this, dovecot gives the message a new UID on next login. If I change the filename in dovecot-uidlist, dovecot still gives a new UID on next login. If I change dovecot-uidlist and delete the index, then the UID is preserved. Re-indexing our millions of mailboxes is not a great solution for us. Is there a good way to fix this?

Hi, I'm about getting to know dovecot in details, I am about the command "doveadm user". The man page shows this example: userdb: jane uid : 8001 gid : 8001 home : /home/jane mail : sdbox:~/sdbox plugins : sieve quota_rule: *:storage=150M It seems to be nice, however I never got this only: ~# doveadm user lgb@office userdb: lgb@office That's all. The dovecot test configuration works otherwise via IMAP/POP3/LMTP nicely. What I guess that the lack of extra information (which would be needed by some scripts of mine, eg for getting user's home easily from shell scripts, as it's hash based, etc) is caused because I don't pass home (and/or other settings) back from userdb and/or passdb. However I do have these in global scope: mail_home = /mailstorage/%Ld/%Ln (yes, this is not hashed at all at the momement but it will be soon) mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir mail_uid = vmail mail_gid = vmail (... and also some global quota stuffs configured in plugin section) Now, I am a bit confused: even with passdb/userdb does not return with user home or GID/UID, dovecot knows these in case of pop3/imap/lmtp access, since these information can be "composed" from those settings. But then, wouldn't it possible so "doveadm user" shows those as well, like lmtp/pop3/imap can resolve those too? Honestly, it's a bit redundant to put needed information into user and pass attrs in every dbs (I have some) when dovecot knows those otherwise ... If I interpret "doveadm user"'s goal wrong (it's just for userdb/passdb query tool nothing more), is there any tool which works in this config, displaying extra information (at least user's home), or should I create some script which just repeats the functionality of dovecot's configured mail_home resolution? I use Dovecot simply as a way, to provide an e-mail archive for people on the LAN, where they can move messages into from within thunderbird. Mails are stored in a maildir of one system user where all the people know the password of. This was very easy to setup in ubuntu 12. Today I started using the mail_log plugin to provide an audit trail. Now I am looking for a light way, to get the log reflect the different people or principals. One way is, to create users with the same ID in the passwd and shadow files, but I'd rather have them in a separate file, something like a list of aliases for the system user. Can you suggest a simple way, without going virtual users? [Dovecot] %d in configuration file does not work

I am trying to set up dovecot in a postfix virtual account/domains setting. In the configuration file I would like to use %d in two places, for: mail_location = /var/mail/vhosts/%d/%n and to specify the location of the respective passwd file: passdb passwd-file { args = /etc/auth/%d/shadow } Looking at the logs, %d is empty while %n works, so dovecot is looking for something in /var/mail/vhosts//myname and /etc/auth//shadow which don't exist. Replacing %d in dovecot.conf with the actual domain name works. So, the quesiton is, why is %d empty, and from where does it take its value?

The Dovecot 2.1 LMTP server currently always strips the address extension from a recipient address (if recipient_delimiter is set), meaning user IDs cannot contain the recipient delimiter character, e.g. "user+foo" is not supported. This was surprising for me, as Postfix behaves differently in this regard: It first looks up "user+foo", and only then "user". The attached patch works for me and brings Dovecot's behavior in line with Postfix. Please let me know what you think about it.

Hi All, I have compared Dovecot performance to Courier and it appears that as a POP3 server Dovecot is slower in 2 times but as an IMAP server it is faster in 1.5 times. The same node (16CPUs), testing time is 30 min, please see results and dovecot configs attached. Benchmark software is MStone used by Sendmail Inc so is is quite reliable. I do not see anything else to tweak in Dovecot to increase POP3 performance. Can we all have some tips to improve it please ? I have a new installation of Dovecot 2.1.12 and cannot select the Inbox without getting this error: c select inbox c NO [SERVERBUG] Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information. Hello. I'm created two installations of dovecot-2.2.beta1 with identical config. Without replication each server works good. With replication enabled every changes are replicated between these ones. When I probe remove or move some email in another folder it is disappears and reappears again and again in source folder and appears in destination folder. [Dovecot] FTS what to use ?

Hi I'm currently using dovecot 2.0 with squat fts which does a nice job. However I'm thinking about upgrading to dovecot 2.1 and the wiki isn't clear about which fts can or should be used with it. Is squat support dead ? As the wiki mentions that the config syntax is obsolete, I'm not sure if squat is obsolete also ? If not, what is the new syntax ? But in the case squat is dead.. what is the recommended alternative nowadays ? I don't really need substring search, but it is a nice thing to have. PS : I will be using dovecot 2.1 with maildir thanks -- erik

Hallo Im trying to set up an Postfix and Dovecot mailserver with ActiveDirectory interation. Postfix is doing well and even Dovecot does ... but I have one big problem! My AD Accounts ar stored in two Subfolders ou=Bischoff Benutzer LTT, dc=bischoff-ltt, dc=local ou=Bischoff Benutzer Nbg, dc=bischoff-ltt, dc=local If i use "base = ou=Bischoff Benutzer LTT, dc=bischoff-ltt, dc=local" everything is fine but users from "ou=Bischoff Benutzer Nbg" will not work. Thats ok so far. But when i use "base = dc=bischoff-ltt, dc=local" none user will be found even if i use "scope = subtree". Postfix has no problem with the base set to "dc=bischoff-ltt, dc=local". Ldapsearch has no problem too. I use Version 2.1.12 on Gentoo Linux with a 2003R2 AD Is scope=subtree broken in Dovecot? Must I set some special parameters for Windows AD? Hello, I would like to compile Dovecot using custom ldap libraries, located at a particular custom system location. How should I alter the config process to specify that the include dir is "/usr/local/openldap/include" and the lib dir is "/usr/local/openldap/lib64" and not the standard ones (/usr/include/ and /usr/lib64/ respectively) on RHEL/CentOS 5 (x86_64). Note that all of the above files/folders exist on the file system at the same time. The idea is to build dovecot against current openldap v2.4.x libraries and not against the available (by the OS) ancient openldap v.2.3.x libs. Please, advise. Thanks, Nick

Hi Running dovecot 2.1.7 (from debian repo). We have some old compressed maildir messages with the wrong S= size in the filename (our fault). If I delete index files, log in to the mailbox and try to FETCH the bad message, dovecot complains about the incorrect message size, attempts to fix the filename and disconnects the client. However, it changes the filesize to the size of the message on disk, not the message's uncompressed size. For subsequent clients, the FETCH works, but dovecot logs an error (and maybe re-indexes the mailbox?) and the message UID changes. Hi all, I have succeed in setting up postfix (to send/receive emails), dovecot to access the folders via IMAP, all using TLS and sieve under dovecot to manage filters. I have also set up a sieve rule to reject those mails whose size exceeds 2 MB... and I'm really proud of everything, because it is my first time!! However, when rejecting the mail, instead of sending a mail saying "I'm sorry blah, blah, blah" to the originary sender, it is sent to the final recipient (that is, me). Do you know how to solve it? Is it a problem from sieve or dovecot? I think is some misconfiguration of my dovecot installation, because the sieve rule is: ################ if size :over 2M { reject text: Ho sento, no accepto cap correu de mes de 2MB de tamany. Hi, We're about to migrate to dovecot (2.1.7 on wheezy), and I have a question about mail migration. Our 'old' imap mailserver will remain available, and has the same usernames/passwords as our future dovecot mailserver. The question: Is there an easy way to make the old mailboxes available under a subfolder (for example 'oldmail') in the mailboxes on the new mailserver? A bit like mounting an old homedirectory under an 'oldfiles' directory on a new fileserver. This way our users could access/migrate whatever folders they choose themselves, and we would not have migrate all messages to dovecot using scripts like imapcopy, etc. Perhaps using the proxy functionality..? Hi everybody I'm trying to set-up an IMAPS mail server using dovecot (version 2.1.7) with virtual email accounts for my family. I have already ran through the mysql phase of the virtual email configuration (and I'm quite confident it works well, because I can send mails from the server using postfix to gmail, e.g.). The symptoms are: a) When I connect by using my mail client (kmail), I don't get any error. b) When I ask kmail to check what authentication services are supported by the server, I see that it is able to connect to te server by looking to the server log. c) However, Inbox folder does never show up :S d) When I send any mail from gmail to my server, It is always refused under the reason that there is not such user in the machine (I am sure it is), and nothing shows up in the server log. [Dovecot] E-mail not being processed into Dovecot folders

I have a new CentOS 6 server running Dovecot 2.0.9 It has current patches from CentOS. Pasted below are the version and output from dovecot -n When I run mail -s "test" username test <ctrl-D> mail is written to /var/spool/mail/username and not to /home/username/Maildir/ The user's client software, Thunderbird, logs in but since mail is not written to Maildir it thinks there is nothing (see paste below from /var/log/maillog) How do I get sendmail or what ever MTA processes mail to write to Maildir rather than /var/spool/sendmail? Just looking for some input from other users of the obox (object storage) backend from dovecot.fi. - What challenges/problem were you trying to overcome/solve by using obox? - What kind of architecture did you deploy using obox? (e.g. distributed object storage for performance, or distributed for availability, geographic distribution of email services, etc.) - What complexities, single points of failure, documentation omissions can you highlight having deployed the obox storage architecture? - Did the obox backend support your email services as well as you expected or more? - How was your interaction with Doveoct.fi? [Dovecot] Installing Dovecot on Gentoo

Hi, I have an already working dovecot server on Ubuntu 10.04 with self-created packages version 2.1.13. This setup is working prefect. Now that I do not wish to continue using Ubuntu (to much work for Upgrading), I decided to switch to Gentoo, as I had made best experiences in the past… I have installed Dovecot on Gentoo and I copied over all my configs and certs and stuff. Also created a user vmail with identical uid/gid and also checked all permissions for the certificate stuff. Dovecot starts. I also can connect to it. [Dovecot] configuration still not working

Hi, I would very much appreciate some help since I get one step ahead and two backwardswith my installation. I am using usernames not (not) in the form of user(a)domain.tld. Simply a string.
