[Dovecot] Moving index files on another disk: no troubles but need more assurances
by Paolo Miotto 11 Feb '13

11 Feb '13

Hi, I'm using dovecot 1.2.15 on debian squeeze with maildir, and I want to move index files out of the mailboxes disk to reduce disk I/O. I need to get the assurance that the switch is completely transparent to my clients (IMAP and POP). I read the wiki documentation and have found this thread (http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2009-September/042665.html) which makes me confident, even if it speaks of a older version and only pop3. So I set up a test server, copied a true mailbox and changed mail location from: mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir to mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir:INDEX=/srv/indexes/%1n/%n (all users under the same domain, no need to use %d). On the IMAP side all seems to work fine, new indexes are created in the new location (dovecot.index.log on 1st access, dovecot.index.cache on message manipolation). A test client (evolution) doesn't notice at all, and I have verified via a telnet imap session that UIDs don't change. But I see that when I move the indexes the IMAP HIGHESTMODSEQ response changes and is reset to 1. Can this baffle the clients? On the rfc I don't found reference to this status walking backwards. Need I to verify that all messages have the virtual size (W=nnnn) in the file name (the mailboxes are from a previous cyrus installation, then we switch to dovecot 1.2)? What other test you suggest that checking UIDL on the pop3 side? What happens if the indexes disk disappears (broken or removed from bay or all paths down for FC/iscsi)? Can dovecot 1.2 continue with INDEX=MEMORY as for a disk full? Sorry for the many questions.... [Dovecot] dovecot, postfix and sieve - broken by Ubuntu upgrade 10.10 -> 12.04
by Johan Helsingius 10 Feb '13

Hi! In upgrading from Ubuntu 10.10 to 12.04, my mail setup (dovecot using sieve and postfix) broke pretty badly. Have gotten teh imap server working, but local delivery doesn't work. - sieve gets called, but all "fileto" actions result in "failed to store into mailbox 'zzz': Mailbox doesn't exist: zzz Dovecot version is 2.0.19, configuration is: # 2.0.19: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf # OS: Linux 3.2.0-37-generic i686 Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS ext4 auth_mechanisms = plain login base_dir = /var/run/dovecot/ disable_plaintext_auth = no info_log_path = /var/log/dovecot.info listen = * log_path = /var/log/dovecot.log log_timestamp = "%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S " login_greeting = Mail server ready. mail_location = maildir:/srv/mail/%u mail_max_userip_connections = 256 mail_privileged_group = mail managesieve_notify_capability = mailto managesieve_sieve_capability = fileinto reject envelope encoded-character vacation subaddress comparator-i;ascii-numeric relational regex imap4flags copy include variables body enotify environment mailbox date ihave mbox_dotlock_change_timeout = 10 mins mbox_lock_timeout = 20 mins mbox_very_dirty_syncs = yes passdb { driver = pam } plugin { sieve = /home/julf/sieve } protocols = imap service auth { unix_listener /var/spool/postfix/private/dovecot-auth { group = postfix mode = 0660 user = postfix } unix_listener auth-master { mode = 0600 } user = root } service imap-login { chroot = login user = dovecot } service managesieve-login { chroot = login user = dovecot } service pop3-login { chroot = login user = dovecot } ssl = no userdb { driver = passwd }

[Dovecot] cPanel && Dovecot 2.x
by Marc Jauvin 10 Feb '13

10 Feb '13

I would like to know if dovecot 2.0.9+ can work with cPanel. I know there is a template for it in cPanel 11.34.1, but when I tried to switch to 2.0.9 (from 1.2.17), it didn't work. I didn't put too much time to test it since I only have one live system to test it with, and I have many customers hosted on this server and I cannot disrupt the service. Has anyone been able to make this work, and if so, is there anything special to do other than rebuilding the config with "/scripts/builddovecotconf" ? Thanks.

[Dovecot] GSS-SPNEGO with dovecot and Outlook without Samba
by Julian David Rath 10 Feb '13

10 Feb '13

I am trying to configure a dovecot2 IMAP server to inter-operate with a active directory to authenticate users. The users should be able to login without a password on a domain-joined client(Outlook). Is it possible to do this only with kerberos? I don't want to put a crappy winbind on my mailserver... I already configured my server to authenticate via kerberos(GSSAPI), but Outlook does not even try to authenticate using GSSAPI, it rather uses PLAIN. I would appreciate any help, many thanks in advance.

[Dovecot] dsync timeout?
by Micah Anderson 08 Feb '13

08 Feb '13

I'm using dsync for a regular backup. The backup system flocks so that two cannot run at the same time, which is generally a good thing. The problem is that it seems like dsync sometimes goes off into the weeds and never comes back, leaving a process running and doing nothing forever, hogging the lock and causing my backups never to run again. I just finally figured out that was what was causing the backups not to run on this system was this process: root 17836 0.0 0.0 40888 1600 ? S 2012 0:00 ssh -i /root/.ssh/backmaildir_id_rsa backmaildir@arg /usr/bin/dsync -u foobar server yeah, that has been running since 2012 :( root:/tmp# strace -p 17836 Process 17836 attached - interrupt to quit select(8, [4], [], NULL, NULL very exciting... There doesn't seem to be a timeout in dsync, but perhaps there should be? At this point my only option is to write a cronjob that will look for dsync processes that are over a certain amount of time old and then kill them, after I do that I will need to take a shower because that is a very dirty solution :P thanks for any ideas, or help! micah --

[Dovecot] Dovecot-2.1.14 - pop3 processes always hangs forever - a follow-up
by Axel Luttgens 08 Feb '13

08 Feb '13

Suspecting a problem with the "virtual" uids/gids, I've tried with a real user for the mail user: # 2.1.14: /_ETC/dovecot/dovecot.conf # OS: Darwin 12.2.1 x86_64 auth_verbose = yes disable_plaintext_auth = no mail_debug = yes mail_gid = dovemailer mail_location = mbox:~/mboxes:INBOX=~/mboxes/inbox mail_uid = dovemailer passdb { args = /_ETC/dovecot/db.conf driver = sql } ssl = no userdb { driver = prefetch } Of course, the db queries do not return uid/gid pairs anymore. And the pop3 processes now seem to work as expected; connecting for the first time as user1: $ telnet 127.0.0.1 110 Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. +OK Dovecot ready. user user1 +OK pass pass1 +OK Logged in. list +OK 0 messages: . quit +OK Logging out. Connection closed by foreign host. Hmmm... Axel

[Dovecot] Dovecot-2.1.14 - pop3 processes always hangs forever
by Axel Luttgens 08 Feb '13

08 Feb '13

Hello, I'm currently experimenting with the 2.1.x series and am facing a behavior I can't explain; I must be doing something wrong and probably miss the obvious... ;-) This is a very basic build on Mac OS X 10.8.2: ./configure --prefix=/_COD/dovecot-2.1.14 --sysconfdir=/_ETC --localstatedir=/_VAR --with-sqlite --with-ldap=yes (Yes, I know, a strange layout, yet very convenient for testing various things here.) Dovecot's configuration is very basic too: # 2.1.14: /_ETC/dovecot/dovecot.conf # OS: Darwin 12.2.1 x86_64 auth_verbose = yes disable_plaintext_auth = no mail_debug = yes mail_location = mbox:~/mboxes:INBOX=~/mboxes/inbox passdb { args = /_ETC/dovecot/db.conf driver = sql } ssl = no userdb { driver = prefetch } It is started from launchd with the -F flag. Two users are defined in the database, user1 (100002/100002) and user2 (100003/100003), with "virtual" uids/gids. Connecting for the first time as user1 through imap: $ telnet 127.0.0.1 143 Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. Hi list, I recently tried to backup mailboxes from an older server machine to a new one in order to move the service to the new machine. Both machines are in the same LAN, I used this command: dsync -R -u username backup ssh -i .ssh/id_rsa username(a)192.168.1.11 /opt/local/bin/dsync and I get this error: dsync-local(dz): Error: Invalid server handshake: dsync-server 2 dsync-remote(dz): Error: Invalid client handshake: dsync-client 1 # lokal machine: dovecot 2.0.19apple1 running on Mac OS X 10.8.2 Server using standard Apple-Dovecot-Configuration # remote machine: 2.1.12 running on Mac OS X 10.4 using PAM authentication I cant seem to find any documentation to this error, nor do I find any dsync entries in the logs of both machines. Does anyone have a hint? Thank you, Dusan

[Dovecot] File permissions used for automatically created mailbox
by Frerich Raabe 07 Feb '13

07 Feb '13

Hi, I'm running Dovecot 2.1.12 on FreeBSD (quite successfully so, thanks for this nice piece of software!). One thing which is slightly annoying though is that automatically created mailboxes (I have lda_mailbox_autocreate set) don't have the file permissions I'd like them to have. I'm using a vmail-based system, i.e. all mail is owned by vmail:vmail; another member of the vmail group is called 'backup', which has read access to all mail in order to create backups. All mail is stored beneath /home/vmail, e.g. /home/vmail/frerich/Maildir Right now, newly created mailbox directories (e.g. /home/vmail/bob) have 0700 permissions, but I'd like to have 0750 for all directories and 0640 for all files so that all files and directories are group-readable for backup purposes. Does anybody know whether this is configurable somehow? Right now, my workaround consists running this cron script every night: #!/bin/sh chown -R vmail:vmail /home/vmail/ find /home/vmail/ -type d -print0 | xargs -0 chmod 0750 find /home/vmail/ -type f -print0 | xargs -0 chmod 0640 -- Frerich Raabe - raabe(a)froglogic.com www.froglogic.com - Multi-Platform GUI Testing

[Dovecot] Subfolders problem

I have moved from dovecot 1.x to 2.x and I have big problem with subfolders. When I'm moving subfolder with other subfolders is moving only main subfolder, without subfolders, example : mail-storage-1 /var/vmail/home/adamskitest/mdbox/mailboxes # find | egrep -e "janusz|jarek" ./jarek ./jarek/dbox-Mails ./jarek/dbox-Mails/dovecot.index.log ./jarek/jarek2 ./jarek/jarek2/dbox-Mails ./jarek/jarek2/dbox-Mails/dovecot.index.log ./jarek/jarek2/jarek3 ./jarek/jarek2/jarek3/dbox-Mails ./jarek/jarek2/jarek3/dbox-Mails/dovecot.index.log ./janusz ./janusz/dbox-Mails ./janusz/dbox-Mails/dovecot.index.log ./janusz/janusz2 ./janusz/janusz2/dbox-Mails ./janusz/janusz2/dbox-Mails/dovecot.index.log ./janusz/janusz2/janusz3 ./janusz/janusz2/janusz3/dbox-Mails ./janusz/janusz2/janusz3/dbox-Mails/dovecot.index.log And now I'm moving jarek2 with jarek3 as subfolder to janusz2 subfolder, result : mail-storage-1 /var/vmail/home/adamskitest/mdbox/mailboxes # find | egrep -e "janusz|jarek" ./jarek ./jarek/dbox-Mails ./jarek/dbox-Mails/dovecot.index.log ./jarek/jarek2 ./jarek/jarek2/jarek3 ./jarek/jarek2/jarek3/dbox-Mails ./jarek/jarek2/jarek3/dbox-Mails/dovecot.index.log ./janusz ./janusz/dbox-Mails ./janusz/dbox-Mails/dovecot.index.log ./janusz/janusz2 ./janusz/janusz2/dbox-Mails ./janusz/janusz2/dbox-Mails/dovecot.index.log ./janusz/janusz2/dbox-Mails/dovecot.index.cache ./janusz/janusz2/janusz3 ./janusz/janusz2/janusz3/dbox-Mails ./janusz/janusz2/janusz3/dbox-Mails/dovecot.index.log ./janusz/janusz2/jarek2 ./janusz/janusz2/jarek2/dbox-Mails ./janusz/janusz2/jarek2/dbox-Mails/dovecot.index.log As You can see there is jarek2 subfolder but jarek3 havent been moved. hello everyone, i'm new to this list im running dovecot as imap+pop (2.1.12) and roundcube (0.8.4) as client. having problems on saving to imap folders, with errors on some accounts my folder structure is as follow: /home/user/.maildir /home/user/.maildir/.Drafts /home/user/.maildir/.Junk /home/user/.maildir/.Sent /home/user/.maildir/.Trash /home/user/.maildir/.Archives /home/user/.maildir/.Archives.2010 ... i'm very confused with the namespace settings. i don't understand what is the correct way to configure it. don't need public or shared folders. on dovecot.log i can see this error with my account (and all the others), but it seems to work ok using roundcube: imap(gsansone): Error: autocreate: No namespace found for mailbox: Junk with a few accounts, i have this on roundcube log: IMAP Error: Could not save message in Drafts in /var/www/localhost/htdocs/mail/program/steps/mail/sendmail.inc with error on saving to imap folder in roundcube UI send you attached the output of 'dovecot -n' and the roundcube configuration related to folders. does anyone have any suggestion? thanks in advance. -- G. [Dovecot] Sieve not filtering
by Nicolas Mora 06 Feb '13

06 Feb '13

Hello, I installed a few weeks ago the Dovecot package on a Debian stable along with postfix, everything works fine except the sieve filter. I followed the howto found on the internet (google: debian postfix dovecot sieve). I'm able to view and modify sieve rules with roundcube or thunderbird plugins, but the rules are not applied when a message arrives and all messages arrive in INBOX. Here is the content of my configuration files concerning sieve : dovecot.conf protocols = imap imaps managesieve protocol managesieve { listen = *:2000 } protocol managesieve { mail_executable = /usr/lib/dovecot/managesieve managesieve_max_line_length = 65536 managesieve_logout_format = bytes=%i/%o } protocol lda { postmaster_address = postmaster(a)babelouest.org mail_plugins = sieve mail_plugin_dir = /usr/lib/dovecot/modules/lda log_path = info_log_path = syslog_facility = mail } plugin { sieve_dir=~/Maildir/sieve } And the postfix/main.cf config file contains for dovecot sieve the following maibox_command = /usr/lib/dovecot/dovecot-lda -f "$SENDER" -a "$RECIPIENT" dovecot_destination_recipient_limit = 1 virtual_transport = dovecot I also tried the command mailbox_command = /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver it didn't work either... Is there somthing so obvious that I didn't see it ? Thanks in advance

[Dovecot] move mail from server with v1.0 to server w. v2.1?
by Frank Lienhard 06 Feb '13

06 Feb '13

I'm about to replace my old server. Both servers are on my internal network. The old one ist running debian lenny(32bit) with dovecot 1.0.15 and the new one debian Wheezy with dovecot 2.1.7. I set up the users on both systems identically (same gid uid). My first attempt was tho simply rsync the Maildirs along with the homes. Both deovecot versions are set up with the maildir format, but this results in ~30% doublicated mails on the new server. I then learned about doveadm/dsync, only to figure out that this isn't available in v 1.0.15 and therefor won't work. So which could be the most painless way to solve that?

[Dovecot] dsync backup questions
by Joe Beaubien 06 Feb '13

06 Feb '13

Hi, I'm currently trying to setup remote backups of my emails but i'm running into issues (mdbox format, indexes and storage in the same folder hierarchy). Local backup command: dsync -u "my_user" backup /backups/my_user (1) Recently, I noticed that the local backup takes up twice the size as the original mail location (8gb vs. 4gb). I purged alot of emails from the original location, so the size shrunk, but the local backup just keeps on getting bigger. I couldn't find any dsync option that would delete extra emails. - Question: Why isn't the local backup synced properly and remove the extra emails? (2) What is the best why to copy this local backup to a remote location that does NOT have the possibility to run dsync. - Question 1: is rsync safe to use and will this data work for restore? - Question 2: Would it be safe to simply rsync the original mail_location to the remote server? I searched the net, but it seems that mdbox is tricky to backup. Thanks in advance, -Joe

[Dovecot] Upgrade from 2.1.13 to 2.1.14 and load doubled

Hi, during the weekend I upgrade my mail servers from dovecot 2.1.13 to dovecot 2.1.14 (and rebuild dovecot-2.1-pigeonhole-0.3.3). [Dovecot] lmtp-proxying in 2.1 slower than in 2.0.14 ?
by Jan-Frode Myklebust 05 Feb '13

05 Feb '13

We upgraded our two dovecot directors from v2.0.14 to dovecot-ee 2.1.10.3 this week, and after that mail seems to be flowing a lot slower than before. The backend mailstores are untouched, on v2.0.14 still. After the upgrade we've been hitting process_limit for lmtp a lot, and we're struggeling with large queues in the incoming mailservers that are using LMTP virtual transport towards our two directors. I seem to remember 2.1 should have a new lmtp-proxying code. Is there anything in this that maybe needs to be tuned that's different from v2.0 ? I'm a bit scheptical to just increasing the process_limit for LMTP proxying, as I doubt running many hundreds of simultaneous deliveries should work that much better against the backend storage.. ###### doveconf -n ########## # 2.1.10.3: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf # OS: Linux 2.6.18-194.32.1.el5 x86_64 Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.5 (Tikanga) default_client_limit = 4000 director_mail_servers = 192.168.42.7 192.168.42.8 192.168.42.9 192.168.42.10 192.168.42.28 192.168.42.29 director_servers = 192.168.42.15 192.168.42.17 disable_plaintext_auth = no listen = * lmtp_proxy = yes managesieve_notify_capability = mailto managesieve_sieve_capability = fileinto reject envelope encoded-character vacation subaddress comparator-i;ascii-numeric relational regex imap4flags copy include variables body enotify environment mailbox date ihave passdb { args = proxy=y nopassword=y driver = static } protocols = imap pop3 lmtp sieve service anvil { client_limit = 6247 } service auth { client_limit = 8292 unix_listener auth-userdb { user = dovecot } } service director { fifo_listener login/proxy-notify { mode = 0666 } inet_listener { port = 5515 } unix_listener director-userdb { mode = 0600 } unix_listener login/director { mode = 0666 } } service imap-login { executable = imap-login director process_limit = 4096 process_min_avail = 4 service_count = 0 vsz_limit = 256 M } service lmtp { inet_listener lmtp { address = * port = 24 } process_limit = 100 } service managesieve-login { executable = managesieve-login director inet_listener sieve { address = * port = 4190 } process_limit = 50 } service pop3-login { executable = pop3-login director process_limit = 2048 process_min_avail = 4 service_count = 0 vsz_limit = 256 M } ssl_cert = </etc/pki/tls/certs/pop.example.com.cert.ca-bundle ssl_key = </etc/pki/tls/private/pop.example.com.key protocol lmtp { auth_socket_path = director-userdb } ################ -jf

[Dovecot] dsync-local(user): Error: proxy client timed out
by Metro Domain Admin 05 Feb '13

05 Feb '13

Hello, I have an intermittent but frequent problem using dsync backup. The command outputs: dsync-local(user): Error: proxy client timed out Then dies with exit code 75. Any subsequent attempts to re-run the backup invariably fail like this: dsync-local(user): Warning: Destination mailbox INBOX has been modified, need to recreate it before we can continue syncing dsync-local(user): Error: read() from worker server failed: EOF dsync-local(user): Error: msg-copy returned invalid input: dsync-local(user): Error: remote: dsync-remote(user(a)domain.com): Error: Can't delete mailbox INBOX: INBOX can't be deleted. dsync-remote(l_user(a)domain.com): Error: command MSG-SAVE failed dsync-local(user): Warning: Mailbox changes caused a desync. You may want to run dsync again. The syntax I am using is: dsync -u $user backup \ ssh -i <idfile> <user@host> \ dsync -u l_$user We have this running in a script that loops through all users. The error happens mostly on the larger mailboxes but I've seen it succeed on the largest ones then fail on smaller. One mid-sized account now fails consistently. The backup is running from a Mac OS PPC server running 2.1.12 The target is a Linux Intel box running 2.1.13, but I had the same problem sending to a Mac OS Intel on 2.1.12. Mdbox in all cases. Thanks, Tony

[Dovecot] Overloading IMAP Server
by Harford, Ken 04 Feb '13

04 Feb '13

Hi All, I am having an issue with dovecot IMAP reading and writing to one specific mailbox. I have a check email delivery script that sends out a email and then logs into dovecot to check if the mailbox that the message has been delivered to. However, the servers that send these messages send them in bunches depending on how many postfix spools it is checking. So I could get 60 messages all being sent to 1 mailbox and then having to read that same mailbox to check if the message actually got delivered. I am using postfix as the MTA and dovecot is actually delivering the message to the mailbox I am getting a lot of errors such as the following: Could not connect to IMAP server imap failed: IMAP RECEIVE CRITICAL - Could not select INBOX Any ideas as to what I can tweak in dovecot to allow these messages to be verified. Thanks for any information or help you could provide!! Ken

[Dovecot] Reviewing end-user ham/spam submissions before feeding them to sa-learn via Dovecot Antispam plug-in
by Ben Johnson 01 Feb '13

01 Feb '13

Currently, I'm using the Dovecot Antispam plug-in with great success. Everything works as expected. However, I would like to change the plug-in's behavior such that it simply sends a copy of a message that is moved from Inbox -> Junk (or Junk -> Inbox) to an administrator, instead of calling sa-learn (I'm using SpamAssassin) automatically. Basically, I would like to be able to review messages that end-users submit for training before they are actually fed to sa-learn. Has anyone had a similar need? If the Antispam plug-in already supports this, if the necessary commands can simply be added to the shell script that Antispam calls, or if there is a better method altogether, any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you! -Ben

[Dovecot] Dovecot Director Doveadm fails when there are a lot of output information

Hi, we are running dovecot 2.1.13 We have 2 proxies with director and 4 mail servers. we use LDAP when we execute doveadm-quota -A and doveadm with few output lines, its works fine. When we use doveadm-search or doveadm-mailbox with a lot of output information the command stops the execution and the command no ends. The connection to one of the 4 mailserver has finished at this moment. I have made some tests and i have found that if we use only one mailserver the commands works fine. [Dovecot] sieve_max_redirects=0 not working as documented
by Arnaud Abélard 31 Jan '13

31 Jan '13

Hello I'm trying to keep my users from using the "redirect" action with pigeonhole from dovecot 2.0.21. As documented in http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Pigeonhole/Sieve/Configuration I configured sieve like this: plugin { sieve = ~/.dovecot.sieve sieve_dir = ~/sieve sieve_max_redirects = 0 } (and doveconf indeed shows the new setting for sieve_max_redirects) Unfortunately I can still use the redirect action: lda(dummy(a)univ-nantes.fr): Debug: sieve: executing script from /vmail/d/u/dummy/.dovecot.svbin lda(dummy(a)univ-nantes.fr): sieve: msgid=<510A758D.1030305(a)univ-nantes.fr>: forwarded to <xxxx(a)xxxxx.com> what could I have missed? [Dovecot] v2.1.14 released
by Timo Sirainen 30 Jan '13

30 Jan '13

http://dovecot.org/releases/2.1/dovecot-2.1.14.tar.gz http://dovecot.org/releases/2.1/dovecot-2.1.14.tar.gz.sig If you've been waiting for a fully stable release after the recent cache file troubles in v2.1.11+, this release should be the one. Hopefully there won't be v2.1.15 anytime in near future. (v2.2.rc1 does look close though.) BTW. I know there are quite a lot of mails I haven't replied to in dovecot list. Too busy for now.. + doveadm acl recalc command added - v2.1.11+ had a race condition where it sometimes overwrote data in dovecot.index.cache file. This could have caused Dovecot to return the same cached data to two different messages. - mdbox: Fixes to handling duplicate GUIDs during index rebuild

[Dovecot] decode2text.sh
by bhs692-dove＠yahoo.com 30 Jan '13

30 Jan '13

Dovecot version: 2.1.13 OS: Centos 6.3 CPU: 64bit x86 There appear to be two related errors in the decode2text.sh file (which can be used for indexing/ searching attachments). - The layout of "$formats" has repeated values for pdf, ppt, etc, so you should only match the pattern once by adding -m1 - The layout of "$formats" has the file extension in the second "column", so the "start of line"(^) match doesn't work as is. Original problem line (from ./src/plugins/fts/decode2texh.sh): fmt=`echo "$formats" | grep -w "^$content_type" | cut -d ' ' -f 2` Here are two options that appear to solve the problem. The first option is probably preferred, since it matches exactly the extension to the second "column". 1) switch the order of commands (cut & grep) and add -m1. for example: fmt=`echo "$formats" | cut -d ' ' -f 2 | grep -w -m1 "^$content_type"` -OR- 2) add "m1" and remove "^". for example: fmt=`echo "$formats" | grep -w -m1 "$content_type" | cut -d ' ' -f 2`

[Dovecot] passdb to add extra fields?
by Timo Sirainen 30 Jan '13

30 Jan '13

Some passdbs like PAM can't really return any extra fields. Also some people have wanted to combine users' data from different passdb/userdbs so that for example you'd have userdb passwd give the uid/gid/home, but then you'd also have some other userdb give quota limits. So I was thinking something like this: passdb { driver = pam } passdb { driver = sql include = yes } or: userdb { driver = passwd } userdb { driver = passwd-file include = yes } I'm not sure about two things: 1) Should there be a way to replace all of the existing fields instead of just adding new ones? 2) Any thoughts of a better name than "include"? With passdb it would mean that it's included only when the authentication failed for some other passdb. With userdb it means it's included only if a previous userdb lookup succeeded. Also there are already "deny" and "pass" settings. Interaction with them can be somewhat confusing.. Maybe all of these should be replaced with: type=deny: Same as old deny=yes (deny auth if user is in list) type=precondition(?): Same as pass=yes (require another passdb to match) type=postcondition(?): Require user to exist in this passdb/userdb as well, adding any extra fields in it. type=add: Add any extra fields, if the user exists at all. (Better ideas for the names here? Is even "type" a good name?) Then maybe a new setting to delete existing extra fields .. or perhaps just extend passdb { override_fields } so that having "-field" would delete the field if it already existed..

[Dovecot] A lot of dovecot/imap processes
by Juan Cifo Servera 30 Jan '13

30 Jan '13

Hello! I have a dovecot installed and many users could login via IMAP over SSL (40 users at same time aprox). Users could have "Check mail every X time" enabled in their client (Thunderbird or K-9 mail) - Is this required feature? I noted that if I disable it I still getting news mails without having to check for new mails manually - . I noted that dovecot is creating a lot of process (dovecot/imap and dovecot/imap-login) and is requiring more and more RAM. I think that every login starts a process but never is endend. The output of /*ps aux | grep dovecot | wc*/ is increasing until 250 lines aprox. I think that is limited by process_limit = 256. But if I put process_limit = 100, in the log appers a message that dovecot is aborting logins (and I noted that new connections sometimes couldn't login). Anyway the mailserver is working well, but I'm afraid of the consumtion of RAM. Is that normal? [Dovecot] help with public namespace/mailbox
by michael＠los-pollos.co 30 Jan '13

30 Jan '13

Dear all, I am hoping someone can help me with a problem that I have been trying to fix for days. Using postfix and dovecot 2.0.19 on Ubuntu 12.04 with LDAP authentication and virtual users and domains. Basically I want to setup both shared and public mailboxes. The shared part is working fine, ie I can share folders successfully and other uses can see them. However when I try and create sub folders in the public folder they don't show up in the client. I have tried creating them in manually in the filesystem ie mkdir .folder and also via thunderbird. I have read through the dovecot wiki's several times over and still cannot see why it won't work. I have debug turned on and these are the log messages I get in syslog when I start up thunderbird: acl: No lookup right to mailbox: public/folder acl vfile: file /home/example.com/public/.folder/dovecot-acl not found acl vfile: file /home/example.com/public/dovecot-acl not found So I create the dovecot-acl file manually in public and set the right file system permissions and the errors go away, yet the folder still doesn't get created despite the following getting logged in syslog. Jan 29 23:43:57 alpha dovecot: imap(testuser(a)example.com): Debug: Namespace public/: /home/example.com/public/.folder2 doesn't exist yet, using default permissions Jan 29 23:43:57 alpha dovecot: imap(testuser(a)example.com): Debug: Namespace public/: Using permissions from /home/example.com/public: mode=0777 gid=-1 Right now I am thinking the problem might be that I am trying to setup both shared and public namespaces within the same configuration and therefore dovecot is looking for acl's for the public when it shouldn't be? Feel like I am stabbing in the dark with this though. Any help anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance. Regards, Michael. [Dovecot] dovecot.index is missing
by Alexandr Sabitov 30 Jan '13

30 Jan '13

Dear All, I have noticed that dovecot.index is not generated straight away if you have just a few emails in the mailbox. Instead of that dovecot.index.log is modified and accessed by clients. Only if the number of email reaches some level then it creates dovecot.index in user mailboxes. Can somebody please tell me when (in my understanding of the process) the index log file drops all data into the mail index file. What does trigger that ? Sorry I couldn't find any info on that in the wiki. Best Regards, Alexandr Sabitov

[Dovecot] password schemes in dovecot
by Public 28 Jan '13

28 Jan '13

Hey there, I'm using the latest dovecot 2.1.13 In the wiki http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Authentication/PasswordSchemes BLF-CRYPT is listed, but i can't use it. "doveadm pw -l" doesn't show it. And i'm unsure about how I am supposed to use the different SHA schemes, since they always output different hashes for the same password. MD5 is working fine, but I'd rather not use it. Is the wiki outdated or how do i get BLF-CRYPT working? thanks, simon

[Dovecot] From Sendmail to Dovecot mdbox, what is missing.
by Torpey List 27 Jan '13

27 Jan '13

Sendmail 8.14.4 dovecot 2.0.9 I have sendmail working and it is sending mail to /var/mail/%u. I have dovecot working in that I can move emails into IMAP folders and I can send email through IMAP. I have set up dovecot to use mdbox based on the following: mail_location = mdbox:~/mail However, I seem to be lacking a key piece of information. Sendmail is sending the mail to /var/mail/%u as a mbox (single file for all emails) format. Dovecot wants to read the mail in mdbox (Multiple messages per file, but unlike mbox multiple files per mailbox.) So the two programs are not working together. So, I cannot get dovecot to read new emails at /var/mail/%u. So I tried changing to the following: mail_location = mdbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u However, dovecot complains that it is NOT a directory. That is because sendmail is sending as mbox format. I have tried two lines of “mail_location” but that did not work. example mail_location = mdbox:~/mail ----> for dovecot mail_location = mbox:INBOX=/var/mail/%u -----> for sendmail I have tried LMTP and dovecot-lda. LMTP – I could not see any difference with this added or not. Dovecot-lda – I have had issues getting it configured. Thanks for any help! [Dovecot] mbox INBOX out of sync (?)
by Tinguaro Barreno Delgado 26 Jan '13

26 Jan '13

Hello all, I've running a Dovecot's installation for several years without problems but since last system upgrade (Dec 26) I'm facing a kind of sync issue with the /var/mail/ inbox files. We have got mobile and desktops IMAP clients (mostly Mozilla Thunderbird). The problem is that /var/mail/ files (mbox) aren't updated: we can delete mail from clients but they persist in de /var/mail, so the same user can see the mail again from other IMAP client. Logs seems to be correct. Many thanks in advance. [Dovecot] Dovecot unable to access the shadow file
by kenwood 25 Jan '13

25 Jan '13

I am installing Dovecot-2.1.13 on Slackware 13.37.0 for the first time to replace ipop3d and I have overcome all of the roadblocks as they have developed except this last one and I finally have to say “uncle”. The error messages that are showing up in the dovecot.log are as follows. Jan 24 12:27:27 tux2 dovecot: auth: Error: passwd-file /etc/shadow: open(/etc/shadow) failed: Permission denied (euid=202(dovecot) egid=202(dovecot) missing +r perm: /etc/shadow, we're not in group 43(shadow), dir owned by 0:0 mode=0755) Jan 24 12:27:27 tux2 dovecot: auth: passwd-file(user,192.168.10.2,<pw3xHwzUSQDAqAoC>): no passwd file: /etc/shadow Jan 24 12:27:29 tux2 dovecot: pop3-login: Warning: SSL alert: where=0x4008, ret=256: warning close notify [192.168.10.2] Jan 24 12:27:29 tux2 dovecot: pop3-login: Disconnected (auth failed, 1 attempts in 2 secs): user=<user>, method=PLAIN, rip=192.168.10.2, lip=192.168.10.100, TLS: Disconnected, session=<pw3xHwzUSQDAqAoC> Based on what I have read the only user that should access the shadow file is root. With that in mind I looked at all the configuration and .ext files and the only file I could find that would indicate that root should be checking the shadow file is 10-master.conf. In that file it said the default service auth-worker was root but since it was apparently not working I removed the hash mark and made it explicit. It still didn’t work. As a last resort even though it was not good practice I tried adding user dovecot to the group shadow but that did not work either. It still says dovecot is not in the group shadow even though it is. Any suggestions? -- View this message in context: http://dovecot.2317879.n4.nabble.com/Dovecot-unable-to-access-the-shadow-fi… Sent from the Dovecot mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

[Dovecot] dovecot 2.1.13, proxy and nologin extras field
by Marco Giunta 24 Jan '13

24 Jan '13

Hi at all, in our test environment, I'm playing with dovecot 2.1.13 configured as imap/pop/managesieve proxy. It is configured to authenticate users with ldap and it works very well. Now, I'd like to temporary disable some users's login, because we are moving to another storage, and I wouldn't stop imap service at all. I've found on Dovecot wiki that I could use 'nologin' extra field, but I wasn't been able to get it work. My dovecot configuration is: # 2.1.13: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf # OS: Linux 2.6.32-279.19.1.el6.x86_64 x86_64 ... auth_debug = yes auth_debug_passwords = yes auth_verbose = yes auth_verbose_passwords = plain disable_plaintext_auth = no listen = * mail_debug = yes managesieve_notify_capability = mailto managesieve_sieve_capability = fileinto reject envelope encoded-character vacation subaddress comparator-i;ascii-numeric relational regex imap4flags copy include variables body enotify environment mailbox date ihave mbox_write_locks = fcntl namespace inbox { inbox = yes location = mailbox Drafts { special_use = \Drafts } mailbox Junk { special_use = \Junk } mailbox Sent { special_use = \Sent } mailbox "Sent Messages" { special_use = \Sent } mailbox Trash { special_use = \Trash } prefix = } passdb { args = /etc/dovecot/dovecot-ldap.conf.ext driver = ldap } plugin { sieve = ~/.dovecot.sieve sieve_dir = ~/sieve } protocols = imap pop3 sieve service managesieve-login { inet_listener sieve { port = 4190 } inet_listener sieve_deprecated { port = 2000 } } ssl = no ssl_cert = </etc/pki/dovecot/certs/dovecot.pem ssl_key = </etc/pki/dovecot/private/dovecot.pem userdb { driver = prefetch } and my 'dovecot-ldap.conf.ext' is: uris = ldap://ldap.example.it/ dn = "cn=Reader,dc=example,dc=it" dnpass = password base = ou=People,dc=example,dc=it pass_attrs = uid=user,userPassword=password,\ =userdb_home=/var/spool/mail/%1u/%u,uidNumber=userdb_uid,gidNumber=userdb_gid,\ =proxy=y,=host=imap.example.it,\ =nologin=y pass_filter = (&(objectClass=qmailUser)(uid=%u)(accountStatus=active)) With this configuration, all users can login, and log said: Jan 23 09:16:18 localhost dovecot: master: Dovecot v2.1.13 starting up (core dumps disabled) Jan 23 09:16:33 localhost dovecot: auth: Debug: Loading modules from directory: /usr/lib64/dovecot/auth Jan 23 09:16:33 localhost dovecot: auth: Debug: Module loaded: /usr/lib64/dovecot/auth/libdriver_sqlite.so Jan 23 09:16:33 localhost dovecot: auth: Debug: Loading modules from directory: /usr/lib64/dovecot/auth Jan 23 09:16:33 localhost dovecot: auth: Debug: Module loaded: /usr/lib64/dovecot/auth/libauthdb_ldap.so Jan 23 09:16:33 localhost dovecot: auth: Debug: auth client connected (pid=3660) Jan 23 09:16:33 localhost dovecot: auth: Debug: client in: AUTH#0111#011PLAIN#011service=imap#011session=PsbzT/DT+gCTeiwf#011lip=192.168.129.109#011rip=192.168.44.31#011lport=143#011rport=53754 Jan 23 09:16:33 localhost dovecot: auth: Debug: client passdb out: CONT#0111#011 Jan 23 09:16:33 localhost dovecot: auth: Debug: client in: CONT#0111#011AHByb3ZhZm0AY2hlcGFsbGU= Jan 23 09:16:33 localhost dovecot: auth: Debug: ldap(prova,147.122.44.31,<PsbzT/DT+gCTeiwf>): pass search: base=ou=People,dc=example,dc=it scope=subtree filter=(&(objectClass=qmailUser)(uid=prova)(accountStatus=active)) fields=uid,userPassword,uidNumber,gidNumber,uid,uid Jan 23 09:16:33 localhost dovecot: auth: Debug: ldap(prova,192.168.44.31,<PsbzT/DT+gCTeiwf>): result: uid=prova uidNumber=2944 gidNumber=650 userPassword={MD5}BjbsTtSovVAs1csswBTI7Q== Jan 23 09:16:33 localhost dovecot: auth: Debug: client passdb out: OK#0111#011user=prova#011proxy#011host=imap.example.it#011nologin#011hostip=192.168.11.136#011pass=password Jan 23 09:16:33 localhost dovecot: imap-login: proxy(prova): started proxying to imap.example.it:143: user=<prova>, method=PLAIN, rip=192.168.44.31, lip=192.168.129.109, session=<PsbzT/DT+gCTeiwf> As you can see 'nologin' field is present in 'passdb' answer, but it doesn't seem to work. [Dovecot] Permissions when running `dovecot --exec-mail imap`
by Tim Marston 24 Jan '13

24 Jan '13

Hi, I'm running dovecot 1.2.15, on Debian squeeze. /var/mail is owned by group "mail" with permissions "g+rwxs,o=". The mail_privileged_group setting is set to "mail". I am trying to access mail on a remote machine with mutt by tunnelling mutt though ssh and running `dovecot --exec-mail imap` on the mail server. But I frequently get errors in the mail server's logs about not being able to create dotlock files when accessing my INBOX this way. This makes sense -- I'm running dovecot as a regular user, so it isn't able to write to /var/mail as group "mail". I notice that on the dovecot wiki[1] it is suggested that sudo is used to set uid/gid before running `dovecot --exec-mail imap`. But I don't actually want to set the uid, just the gid. And I also have sudo disabled at the moment. So I was wondering about another solution... Would it be acceptable to setgid the dovecot executable and change it's group to "mail" (i.e., `chgrp mail dovecot` and `chmod g+s dovecot`)? Would this pose some kind of security risk? Would this actualy do what I want, or am I missing a bigger picture? Kind regards, [1] http://wiki.dovecot.org/PreAuth -- Tim Marston ed.am

Hello! Jan 10 16:29:24 lda(archiv(a)bitcorner.de): Warning: quota: Namespace '' is not Maildir, skipping for Maildir++ quota This is what I defined in the dovecot.conf: mail_home = /var/spool/vhosts/%d/%n mail_location = mbox:~/:maildir:~/ mail_plugins = quota plugin { quota = maildir:User quota quota_rule = *:storage=500MB quota_rule2 = Trash:storage=+10%% } Can I avoid the error above somehow? Namespaces are a bit mysterious for me at the moment. Greetings Andreas

[Dovecot] speed up dovecot IMAP server
by Bernics Gábor | Penta Unió Zrt. 23 Jan '13

Hello, I upgraded my dovecot server (1.2 -> 2.1), from debian backport because it was a little slow (wait 5-6 sec) when I opened some mail (but not every mail). Unfortunately, the mail open speed didn't increase. I think it's an index problem. Have you idea for fixing? [Dovecot] Fixing bad maildir message sizes
by Richard Platel 23 Jan '13

23 Jan '13

Hello. As stated in my previous message, we have some old compressed maildir messages with incorrect sizes in the filename. These messages cause dovecot 2.x problems. I'm trying to write a script to crawl all our messages, check the actual message size and if necessary, fix the filename. However, when I do this, dovecot gives the message a new UID on next login. If I change the filename in dovecot-uidlist, dovecot still gives a new UID on next login. If I change dovecot-uidlist and delete the index, then the UID is preserved. Re-indexing our millions of mailboxes is not a great solution for us. Is there a good way to fix this?

[Dovecot] question on "doveadm user" and pass/userdb
by Gábor Lénárt 22 Jan '13

22 Jan '13

Hi, I'm about getting to know dovecot in details, I am about the command "doveadm user". The man page shows this example: userdb: jane uid : 8001 gid : 8001 home : /home/jane mail : sdbox:~/sdbox plugins : sieve quota_rule: *:storage=150M It seems to be nice, however I never got this only: ~# doveadm user lgb@office userdb: lgb@office That's all. The dovecot test configuration works otherwise via IMAP/POP3/LMTP nicely. What I guess that the lack of extra information (which would be needed by some scripts of mine, eg for getting user's home easily from shell scripts, as it's hash based, etc) is caused because I don't pass home (and/or other settings) back from userdb and/or passdb. However I do have these in global scope: mail_home = /mailstorage/%Ld/%Ln (yes, this is not hashed at all at the momement but it will be soon) mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir mail_uid = vmail mail_gid = vmail (... and also some global quota stuffs configured in plugin section) Now, I am a bit confused: even with passdb/userdb does not return with user home or GID/UID, dovecot knows these in case of pop3/imap/lmtp access, since these information can be "composed" from those settings. But then, wouldn't it possible so "doveadm user" shows those as well, like lmtp/pop3/imap can resolve those too? Honestly, it's a bit redundant to put needed information into user and pass attrs in every dbs (I have some) when dovecot knows those otherwise ... If I interpret "doveadm user"'s goal wrong (it's just for userdb/passdb query tool nothing more), is there any tool which works in this config, displaying extra information (at least user's home), or should I create some script which just repeats the functionality of dovecot's configured mail_home resolution? Thanks.

[Dovecot] Mail logger question
by Hungerburg 21 Jan '13

21 Jan '13

I use Dovecot simply as a way, to provide an e-mail archive for people on the LAN, where they can move messages into from within thunderbird. Mails are stored in a maildir of one system user where all the people know the password of. This was very easy to setup in ubuntu 12. Today I started using the mail_log plugin to provide an audit trail. Now I am looking for a light way, to get the log reflect the different people or principals. One way is, to create users with the same ID in the passwd and shadow files, but I'd rather have them in a separate file, something like a list of aliases for the system user. Can you suggest a simple way, without going virtual users? Below the relevant info on dovecot: $ dovecot --version 2.0.19 $ dovecot -n # 2.0.19: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf # OS: Linux 3.2.0-35-generic x86_64 Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS mail_plugins = " fts fts_squat mail_log notify" passdb { driver = pam } plugin { fts = squat fts_squat = partial=4 full=10 mail_log_events = save delete undelete expunge copy mailbox_delete mailbox_rename mail_log_fields = uid box msgid size from subject } protocols = " imap" ssl_cert = </etc/ssl/certs/ssl-cert-snakeoil.pem ssl_key = </etc/ssl/private/ssl-cert-snakeoil.key userdb { driver = passwd } Thank you all -- peter

[Dovecot] %d in configuration file does not work
by Jens Tobiska 19 Jan '13

19 Jan '13

I am trying to set up dovecot in a postfix virtual account/domains setting. In the configuration file I would like to use %d in two places, for: mail_location = /var/mail/vhosts/%d/%n and to specify the location of the respective passwd file: passdb passwd-file { args = /etc/auth/%d/shadow } Looking at the logs, %d is empty while %n works, so dovecot is looking for something in /var/mail/vhosts//myname and /etc/auth//shadow which don't exist. Replacing %d in dovecot.conf with the actual domain name works. So, the quesiton is, why is %d empty, and from where does it take its value?

[Dovecot] [PATCH] LMTP: Permit user IDs containing recipient_delimiter
by Ulrich Zehl 18 Jan '13

18 Jan '13

The Dovecot 2.1 LMTP server currently always strips the address extension from a recipient address (if recipient_delimiter is set), meaning user IDs cannot contain the recipient delimiter character, e.g. "user+foo" is not supported. This was surprising for me, as Postfix behaves differently in this regard: It first looks up "user+foo", and only then "user". The attached patch works for me and brings Dovecot's behavior in line with Postfix. Please let me know what you think about it.

[Dovecot] possible: two private namespaces with different quota?
by Steffen Kaiser 17 Jan '13

17 Jan '13

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hello, in thread "how to setup different quota for multiple namespaces" I tried to get an additional, private namespace "archive" with yet another quota. Every message, regardless if delivered to INBOX or archive, counts for both namespaces, the default one and the archive one. Furthermore the dict records the quota of the archive namespace as user "ns=archive". Because the quota_rules does not accept "*", I see no way to have two or more private quota roots. Could one improve quota_root_rule_find(struct quota_root_settings *root_set, const char *name) { struct quota_rule *rule; array_foreach_modifiable(&root_set->rules, rule) { char *p = strchr(rule->mailbox_name, '\0'); if(p && p > rule->mailbox_name + 1 && p[-1] == '*' ) { /* compare box* */ if(memcmp(rule->mailbox_name, name, p - rule->mailbox_name - 2) == 0) return rule; } else if (strcmp(rule->mailbox_name, name) == 0) return rule; } return NULL; } So one could add a relative rule for the default private namespace. [Dovecot] Benchmarking: Dovecot vs Courier. Courier wins as POP3 server

Hi All, I have compared Dovecot performance to Courier and it appears that as a POP3 server Dovecot is slower in 2 times but as an IMAP server it is faster in 1.5 times. The same node (16CPUs), testing time is 30 min, please see results and dovecot configs attached. Benchmark software is MStone used by Sendmail Inc so is is quite reliable. I do not see anything else to tweak in Dovecot to increase POP3 performance. Can we all have some tips to improve it please ? [Dovecot] dovecot-2.2.beta1: do not removes e-mail with enabled replication
by Евгений Басов 16 Jan '13

16 Jan '13

Hello. I'm created two installations of dovecot-2.2.beta1 with identical config. Without replication each server works good. With replication enabled every changes are replicated between these ones. When I probe remove or move some email in another folder it is disappears and reappears again and again in source folder and appears in destination folder. Thus increasing number of letters like with copy. Possible reasons cause of the problem: - bug - configuration settings of dovecot - users with wich dovecot works and users rights. [Dovecot] FTS what to use ?
by Erik Colson 16 Jan '13

16 Jan '13

Hi I'm currently using dovecot 2.0 with squat fts which does a nice job. However I'm thinking about upgrading to dovecot 2.1 and the wiki isn't clear about which fts can or should be used with it. Is squat support dead ? As the wiki mentions that the config syntax is obsolete, I'm not sure if squat is obsolete also ? If not, what is the new syntax ? But in the case squat is dead.. what is the recommended alternative nowadays ? I don't really need substring search, but it is a nice thing to have. PS : I will be using dovecot 2.1 with maildir thanks -- erik

[Dovecot] Dovecot subtree problem in ldap/ad search
by Marcus Jüttner 15 Jan '13

15 Jan '13

Hallo Im trying to set up an Postfix and Dovecot mailserver with ActiveDirectory interation. Postfix is doing well and even Dovecot does ... but I have one big problem! My AD Accounts ar stored in two Subfolders ou=Bischoff Benutzer LTT, dc=bischoff-ltt, dc=local ou=Bischoff Benutzer Nbg, dc=bischoff-ltt, dc=local If i use "base = ou=Bischoff Benutzer LTT, dc=bischoff-ltt, dc=local" everything is fine but users from "ou=Bischoff Benutzer Nbg" will not work. Thats ok so far. But when i use "base = dc=bischoff-ltt, dc=local" none user will be found even if i use "scope = subtree". Postfix has no problem with the base set to "dc=bischoff-ltt, dc=local". Ldapsearch has no problem too. I use Version 2.1.12 on Gentoo Linux with a 2003R2 AD Is scope=subtree broken in Dovecot? Must I set some special parameters for Windows AD? My Config: hosts = 192.168.1.98 dn = bischoff-ltt\ldapsearch dnpass = xxxxx auth_bind = yes ldap_version = 3 scope = subtree base = dc=bischoff-ltt, dc=local #base = ou=Bischoff Benutzer LTT, dc=bischoff-ltt, dc=local #base = ou=Bischoff Benutzer Nbg, dc=bischoff-ltt, dc=local user_attrs = =home=/var/dovecot/%Ln/,=mail=maildir:/var/dovecot/%Ln/ user_filter = (&(ObjectClass=person)(sAMAccountName=%u)) pass_filter = (&(ObjectClass=person)(sAMAccountName=%u)) Thanks for Help Marcus

[Dovecot] Define custom ldap libraries when building Dovecot
by Nikolaos Milas 15 Jan '13

15 Jan '13

Hello, I would like to compile Dovecot using custom ldap libraries, located at a particular custom system location. How should I alter the config process to specify that the include dir is "/usr/local/openldap/include" and the lib dir is "/usr/local/openldap/lib64" and not the standard ones (/usr/include/ and /usr/lib64/ respectively) on RHEL/CentOS 5 (x86_64). Note that all of the above files/folders exist on the file system at the same time. The idea is to build dovecot against current openldap v2.4.x libraries and not against the available (by the OS) ancient openldap v.2.3.x libs. Please, advise. Thanks, Nick

[Dovecot] Zlib maildir reindex bug?
by Richard Platel 14 Jan '13

14 Jan '13

Hi Running dovecot 2.1.7 (from debian repo). We have some old compressed maildir messages with the wrong S= size in the filename (our fault). If I delete index files, log in to the mailbox and try to FETCH the bad message, dovecot complains about the incorrect message size, attempts to fix the filename and disconnects the client. However, it changes the filesize to the size of the message on disk, not the message's uncompressed size. For subsequent clients, the FETCH works, but dovecot logs an error (and maybe re-indexes the mailbox?) and the message UID changes. [Dovecot] sieve reject to wrong address?
by Felix Rubio Dalmau 14 Jan '13

14 Jan '13

Hi all, I have succeed in setting up postfix (to send/receive emails), dovecot to access the folders via IMAP, all using TLS and sieve under dovecot to manage filters. I have also set up a sieve rule to reject those mails whose size exceeds 2 MB... and I'm really proud of everything, because it is my first time!! However, when rejecting the mail, instead of sending a mail saying "I'm sorry blah, blah, blah" to the originary sender, it is sent to the final recipient (that is, me). Do you know how to solve it? Is it a problem from sieve or dovecot? I think is some misconfiguration of my dovecot installation, because the sieve rule is: ################ if size :over 2M { reject text: Ho sento, no accepto cap correu de mes de 2MB de tamany. Sisplau, puja els fitxers mes grans a un servidor i envia'm un link. Gracies. I'm sorry, I do not accept mail over 2 MB in size. Please upload larger files to a server and send me a link. Thanks. . ; } ################ dovecot log looks like: Jan 14 17:34:16 server dovecot: lda(felix@server): sieve: msgid=<201301141734.16203.felix@server>: rejected message from <felix@server> (reject) Jan 14 17:34:16 server postfix/cleanup[2011]: 2B59CB59: message- id=<dovecot-1358181256-51155-0@server> Jan 14 17:34:16 server postfix/pipe[2012]: 311AF4E0: to=<felix@server>, relay=dovecot, delay=1, delays=0.81/0.02/0/0.19, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (delivered via dovecot service) Thank you! -- Felix Rubio Dalmau

[Dovecot] load sbub-mailbox
by mourik jan heupink 14 Jan '13

14 Jan '13

Hi, We're about to migrate to dovecot (2.1.7 on wheezy), and I have a question about mail migration. Our 'old' imap mailserver will remain available, and has the same usernames/passwords as our future dovecot mailserver. The question: Is there an easy way to make the old mailboxes available under a subfolder (for example 'oldmail') in the mailboxes on the new mailserver? A bit like mounting an old homedirectory under an 'oldfiles' directory on a new fileserver. This way our users could access/migrate whatever folders they choose themselves, and we would not have migrate all messages to dovecot using scripts like imapcopy, etc. Perhaps using the proxy functionality..? Hope I make myself clear...? Regards, Mourik Jan

hi all, I was testing dovecot server , auth via redis. first I follow http://master.wiki2.dovecot.org/AuthDatabase/Dict but auth always fail, last , I found value { "uid": 123, "gid": 123, "home": "/home/username" } was wrong, the uid and gid must as string , not number. { "uid": "123", "gid": "123", "home": "/home/username" } was worked. it's hard to find the problem :( pls notice that. -- View this message in context: http://dovecot.2317879.n4.nabble.com/bug-report-auth-via-dict-tp39685.html Sent from the Dovecot mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

[Dovecot] I can not receive any mail
by Felix Rubio Dalmau 14 Jan '13

14 Jan '13

Hi everybody I'm trying to set-up an IMAPS mail server using dovecot (version 2.1.7) with virtual email accounts for my family. I have already ran through the mysql phase of the virtual email configuration (and I'm quite confident it works well, because I can send mails from the server using postfix to gmail, e.g.). However, I am stucked configuring dovecot. I don't know why is it not running properly. The symptoms are: a) When I connect by using my mail client (kmail), I don't get any error. b) When I ask kmail to check what authentication services are supported by the server, I see that it is able to connect to te server by looking to the server log. c) However, Inbox folder does never show up :S d) When I send any mail from gmail to my server, It is always refused under the reason that there is not such user in the machine (I am sure it is), and nothing shows up in the server log. Here is my configuration, just in case somebody can give it a look to help me figure out what's going on :S Thank you very much in advance. # 2.1.7: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf # OS: Linux 3.6.9-1 x86_64 Debian 6.0.6 ext4 auth_cache_size = 1 M auth_debug = yes auth_mechanisms = plain login auth_verbose = yes auth_worker_max_count = 2 base_dir = /var/run/dovecot/ listen = * log_timestamp = "%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S " login_greeting = Dovecot ready. mail_debug = yes mail_location = maildir:/home/vmail/%d/%n/Maildir mail_privileged_group = vmail namespace inbox { inbox = yes location = mailbox Drafts { special_use = \Drafts } mailbox Junk { special_use = \Junk } mailbox Sent { special_use = \Sent } mailbox "Sent Messages" { special_use = \Sent } mailbox Trash { special_use = \Trash } prefix = type = private } passdb { args = /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf.ext driver = sql } plugin { sieve = ~/.dovecot.sieve sieve_dir = ~/sieve } postmaster_address = postmaster(a)mysite.org protocols = " imap" service auth { unix_listener /var/spool/postfix/private/auth { group = postfix mode = 0660 user = postfix } } service imap-login { inet_listener imaps { port = 993 ssl = yes } process_min_avail = 0 service_count = 1 } service imap { process_limit = 5 } ssl = required ssl_cert = </etc/postfix/ssl/cert.pem ssl_key = </etc/postfix/ssl/cert.key userdb { args = uid=5000 gid=5000 home=/home/vmail/%d/%n allow_all_users=yes driver = static } verbose_ssl = yes protocol lda { mail_plugins = sieve } -- Felix Rubio Dalmau

[Dovecot] E-mail not being processed into Dovecot folders
by stalker 14 Jan '13

I have a new CentOS 6 server running Dovecot 2.0.9 It has current patches from CentOS. Pasted below are the version and output from dovecot -n When I run mail -s "test" username test <ctrl-D> mail is written to /var/spool/mail/username and not to /home/username/Maildir/ The user's client software, Thunderbird, logs in but since mail is not written to Maildir it thinks there is nothing (see paste below from /var/log/maillog) How do I get sendmail or what ever MTA processes mail to write to Maildir rather than /var/spool/sendmail? [root@info2 Maildir]# dovecot --version 2.0.9 [root@info2 Maildir]# dovecot -n # 2.0.9: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf # OS: Linux 2.6.32-279.19.1.el6.i686 i686 CentOS release 6.3 (Final) disable_plaintext_auth = no mail_debug = yes mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir mbox_write_locks = fcntl passdb { driver = pam } protocols = pop3 ssl = no ssl_cert = </etc/pki/dovecot/certs/dovecot.pem ssl_key = </etc/pki/dovecot/private/dovecot.pem userdb { driver = passwd } protocol pop3 { pop3_uidl_format = %v.%u } Jan 10 08:11:13 info2 dovecot: pop3-login: Login: user=<username>, method=PLAIN, rip=192.168.55.50, lip=192.168.55.8, mpid=30560 Jan 10 08:11:13 info2 dovecot: pop3(username): Debug: Effective uid=503, gid=503, home=/home/username Jan 10 08:11:13 info2 dovecot: pop3(username): Debug: maildir++: root=/home/username/Maildir, index=, control=, inbox=/home/username/Maildir Jan 10 08:11:13 info2 dovecot: pop3(username): Disconnected: Logged out top=0/0, retr=0/0, del=0/0, size=0

[Dovecot] Anyone using dovecot obox?
by list＠airstreamcomm.net 14 Jan '13

14 Jan '13

Just looking for some input from other users of the obox (object storage) backend from dovecot.fi. - What challenges/problem were you trying to overcome/solve by using obox? - What kind of architecture did you deploy using obox? (e.g. distributed object storage for performance, or distributed for availability, geographic distribution of email services, etc.) - What complexities, single points of failure, documentation omissions can you highlight having deployed the obox storage architecture? - Did the obox backend support your email services as well as you expected or more? - How was your interaction with Doveoct.fi? Thanks in advance.

[Dovecot] Installing Dovecot on Gentoo
by Christian Rößner 14 Jan '13

14 Jan '13

Hi, I have an already working dovecot server on Ubuntu 10.04 with self-created packages version 2.1.13. This setup is working prefect. Now that I do not wish to continue using Ubuntu (to much work for Upgrading), I decided to switch to Gentoo, as I had made best experiences in the past… I have installed Dovecot on Gentoo and I copied over all my configs and certs and stuff. Also created a user vmail with identical uid/gid and also checked all permissions for the certificate stuff. Dovecot starts. I also can connect to it. But when trying to login, I get errors: ------------------------------------------------------- telnet localhost 143 Trying ::1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. * OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 LITERAL+ SASL-IR LOGIN-REFERRALS ID ENABLE IDLE STARTTLS AUTH=PLAIN AUTH=LOGIN AUTH=CRAM-MD5 AUTH=DIGEST-MD5 AUTH=NTLM] Dovecot ready. . login croessner <hiddenpw> . [Dovecot] dovecot and cacti (snmp ?)
by mancyborg＠gmail.com 10 Jan '13

10 Jan '13

Hi All, I've put online a postfix+dovecot+mysql+roundcube server that will grow till serving around 1500 accounts. I've installed the usual cacti graphs, plus the beautiful percona suite for mysql's cacti plus some graphs for iops and iostat. I was lurking around for the best solution to graph dovecot usage, the most detailed possible, in order to prevent and foresee problems. I'm finding sparse results, I'm not sure which one is the most current / complete. Do you have any suggestions ? Thank you very much for supporting, regards and have a nice day, Mike

[Dovecot] problems with sieve
by Carsten Laun-De Lellis 10 Jan '13

10 Jan '13

Hi all I am running a simple mail server on ubuntu 12.04LTS with postfix 2.9.3 and dovecot 2.1.10. Since this morning sieve doesn't work anymore. I changed the sieve script forth and back but sieve is not working. I also replaced the sieve file with the backup, but no success. But I can't any error messages in the log files indicating any problem with sieve. The only thing I found is: Jan 10 00:03:26 vmd187 dovecot: lda(carsten.delellis(a)delellis.net): sieve: msgid=<12155505.mmailer335539222(a)fritz.box>: stored mail into mailbox 'Fritz!Box' -- with working sieve Jan 10 13:52:29 vmd187 dovecot: lda(carsten.delellis(a)delellis.net): msgid=<1898328495.2554803.1357821905269.JavaMail.app(a)ela4-app2316.prod>: saved mail to INBOX -- with sieve not working As you can see that after dovecot: lda(carsten.delellis(a)delellis.net): the sieve tag is missing. I have also attached my settings from 90-sieve.conf from dovecot configuration. ## ## Settings for the Sieve interpreter ## # Do not forget to enable the Sieve plugin in 15-lda.conf and 20-lmtp.conf # by adding it to the respective mail_plugins= settings. plugin { # The path to the user's main active script. # sieve = ~/.dovecot.sieve sieve = /vmail/%d/%n/dovecot.sieve # A path to a global sieve script file, which gets executed ONLY # if user's private Sieve script doesn't exist. [Dovecot] Confused about "Authentication Mechanism" and "Password Schemes"
by Thomas Pries 10 Jan '13

10 Jan '13

Hi, I am currently setting up a Mailserver and decided to use Dovecot as IMAP/POP3-Server. I read the wiki an thought about how to transmit and store the passwords (I want to use a MySQL-database). I want to use encrypted transmission and encrypted storage. The wiki says: "If you want to use only one non-plaintext mechanism, you can store the passwords using the mechanism's own password scheme. " Ok, one secure mechanism is acceptable in my scenario and the wiki gives a list of supported authentication mechanisms and a list of supported password schemes. But I am missing the relation between the two lists, which mechanism expects which storage scheme? Did I overlooked any easy answer (other then "read the RFCs"). Best Regards Thomas

[Dovecot] v2.2.beta1 released
by Timo Sirainen 10 Jan '13

http://dovecot.org/releases/2.2/beta/dovecot-2.2.beta1.tar.gz http://dovecot.org/releases/2.2/beta/dovecot-2.2.beta1.tar.gz.sig Lots of fixes since 2.2.alpha1, especially related to dsync. Also dsync now supports syncing private message flags when INDEXPVT is used. Here's again the list of all the major changes in v2.2: * When creating home directories, the permissions are copied from the parent directory if it has setgid-bit set. For full details, see http://wiki2.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes/Permissions * "doveadm auth" command was renamed to "doveadm auth test" * IMAP: ID command now advertises server name as Dovecot by default. It was already trivial to guess this from command replies. * dovecot.index.cache files can be safely accessed only by v2.1.11+. Older versions may think they're corrupted and delete them. + Implemented IMAP MOVE and BINARY extensions + Implemented IMAP CATENATE, URLAUTH and URLAUTH=BINARY extensions (by Stephan Bosch). + Implemented IMAP NOTIFY extension. Requires mailbox_list_index=yes to be enabled. + Redesigned and rewritten dsync. The new design makes the syncing faster, more reliable and more featureful. The new dsync protocol isn't backwards compatible with old dsync versions (but is designed to be forwards compatible with future versions). + All mailbox formats now support per-user message flags for shared mailboxes by using a private index. It can be enabled by adding :INDEXPVT=<path> to mail location. This should be used instead of :INDEX also for Maildir/mbox to improve performance. + Improved mailbox list indexes. They should be usable now, although still disabled by default. + Added LAYOUT=index. The mailbox directories are created using their GUIDs in the filesystem, while the actual GUID <-> name mapping exists only in the index. + LMTP proxy: Implemented XCLIENT extension for passing remote IP address through proxy.

'Father' of the IMAP protocol. Died Dec 28. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Crispin Had a TOPS-20 in his basement that did a great job of keeping the house warm in the cool months (I remember one BAR bof where he extoled the benefits of this form of home heating).

[Dovecot] Squat FTS plugin not kicking in
by Frerich Raabe 09 Jan '13

09 Jan '13

Hi, I'm running Dovecot 2.1.12 on FreeBSD. I configured Dovecot to use the Squat plugin to provide faster full-text searches. The output of 'dovecot -n' is attached to this mail. However, I just noticed that this plugin doesn't seem to kick in. A raw telnet session seems to confirm this: [..] . SEARCH BODY abcdefg * OK Searched 57% of the mailbox, ETA 0:06 * SEARCH 3425 6254 14710 . OK Search completed (17.262 secs). . SEARCH BODY abcdefg * OK Searched 63% of the mailbox, ETA 0:05 * SEARCH 3425 6254 14710 . OK Search completed (18.651 secs). [..] A SEARCH BODY command doesn't create the dovecot.index.search or dovecot.index.search.uids files mentioned on http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Plugins/FTS/Squat . Also, two subsequent SEARCH BODY invocations don't seem to be any different as far as search time goes. I checked the logs but couldn't see anything which is related, except: Jan 8 21:36:10 imap2 dovecot: indexer-worker(frerich): Indexed 0 messages in INBOX Does anybody have some idea how to get more logging out of index-worker, or whether there's a flaw in my configuration? -- Frerich Raabe - raabe(a)froglogic.com www.froglogic.com - Multi-Platform GUI Testing

[Dovecot] Migrating mailboxes
by Odhiambo Washington 09 Jan '13

Hello everyone and Happy 2013! I have a situation -- the first ever I have come across -- which I don't understand. A friend was/is running Postfix and Dovecot - with default configs - nothing was ever changed :-) [root@mail home]# dovecot --version 0.99.11 Anyway, he had a problem with a user mailbox which I wasn't able to diagnose and fix easily. maillog showed: Jan 9 16:11:29 mail imap-login: Login: userx [::ffff:127.0.0.1] Jan 9 16:11:29 mail imap(userx): file lib.c: line 37 (nearest_power): assertion failed: (num <= ((size_t)1 << (BITS_IN_SIZE_T-1))) Jan 9 16:11:29 mail dovecot: child 25217 (imap) killed with signal 6 Jan 9 16:12:03 mail imap-login: Login: userx [::ffff:127.0.0.1] Jan 9 16:12:03 mail imap(userx): file lib.c: line 37 (nearest_power): assertion failed: (num <= ((size_t)1 << (BITS_IN_SIZE_T-1))) Jan 9 16:12:03 mail dovecot: child 25229 (imap) killed with signal 6 Jan 9 16:13:15 mail pop3-login: Login: userx [::ffff:192.168.0.55] Jan 9 16:13:15 mail pop3(userx): file lib.c: line 37 (nearest_power): assertion failed: (num <= ((size_t)1 << (BITS_IN_SIZE_T-1))) My aim is not to fix the above. I have reconfigured both Postfix and Dovecot to use Maildir now and things are fine (not securitywise, but I don't care about that) for now. However, I'd like to migrate old mail for some users, but I don't know how to go about this, given the mailbox format, which I don't understand: Here is what a typical one looks like: [root@mail home]# ls -al johndoe/mail/.imap/ total 24 drwx------ 6 johndoe users 4096 May 27 2010 . drwx------ 3 johndoe users 4096 May 27 2010 .. drwx------ 2 johndoe users 4096 May 27 2010 Drafts drwx------ 2 johndoe users 4096 Jan 9 15:46 INBOX drwx------ 2 johndoe users 4096 May 27 2010 Sent drwx------ 2 johndoe users 4096 May 27 2010 Trash [root@mail home]# ls -al johndoe/mail/.imap/INBOX/ total 180 drwx------ 2 johndoe users 4096 Jan 9 15:46 . drwx------ 6 johndoe users 4096 May 27 2010 .. -rw------- 1 johndoe users 5 Dec 18 2007 .customflags -rw------- 1 johndoe users 10272 Jan 9 15:46 .imap.index -rw------- 1 johndoe users 132774 Jan 9 11:27 .imap.index.data -rw------- 1 johndoe users 5136 Sep 26 2011 .imap.index.log -rw------- 1 johndoe users 9404 Jan 8 18:44 .imap.index.tree [root@mail home]# ls -al johndoe/mail/.imap/Sent/ total 36 drwx------ 2 johndoe users 4096 May 27 2010 . drwx------ 6 johndoe users 4096 May 27 2010 .. -rw------- 1 johndoe users 5 May 27 2010 .customflags -rw------- 1 johndoe users 1608 May 27 2010 .imap.index -rw------- 1 johndoe users 10264 May 27 2010 .imap.index.data -rw------- 1 johndoe users 2576 May 27 2010 .imap.index.log -rw------- 1 johndoe users 1556 May 27 2010 .imap.index.tree [root@mail home]# ls -al johndoe/mail/.imap/Drafts/ total 36 drwx------ 2 johndoe users 4096 May 27 2010 . drwx------ 6 johndoe users 4096 May 27 2010 .. -rw------- 1 johndoe users 5 May 27 2010 .customflags -rw------- 1 johndoe users 1608 May 27 2010 .imap.index -rw------- 1 johndoe users 10264 May 27 2010 .imap.index.data -rw------- 1 johndoe users 2576 May 27 2010 .imap.index.log -rw------- 1 johndoe users 1556 May 27 2010 .imap.index.tree [root@mail home]# ls -al johndoe/mail/.imap/Trash/ total 44 drwx------ 2 johndoe users 4096 May 27 2010 . drwx------ 6 johndoe users 4096 May 27 2010 .. -rw------- 1 johndoe users 5 May 27 2010 .customflags -rw------- 1 johndoe users 1608 May 27 2010 .imap.index -rw------- 1 johndoe users 17950 May 27 2010 .imap.index.data -rw------- 1 johndoe users 2576 May 27 2010 .imap.index.log -rw------- 1 johndoe users 1556 May 27 2010 .imap.index.tree How can I migrate these mails into /home/johndoe/Maildir/ ??
