Hi there, I've just been experimenting with the latest courier-dovecot-migrate.pl script and I notice that it favours keeping pop3 UIDL ordering rather than IMAP UID preservation. There is this comment (line 312): # POP3 clients may want to get POP3 UIDLs in the same order always. # Preserve the order even if it causes IMAP UIDs to change. Does anyone have details as to which clients this actually causes a problem with? If it's some really old software then perhaps we'd prefer to keep the imap UID's the same but change the POP3 UIDL ordering (not the UIDL numbering though of course) Thanks, Mark

FYI it seems dovecot 2.0.8 fails to start on RHEL5 with IPv6 disabled ("alias net-pf-10 off" in modprobe.conf) unless one specify "listen = *". Not sure if this is a known problem, or just a hint that we should start enabling ipv6 on our mailservers... ;-) -jf

[Dovecot] Lazy expunge for performance ?

Some filesystems are quite slow at deleting files, so I'm wondering if anybody is using the lazy expunge plugin to implement a solution where expunged messages are moved to a separate directory structure within the same filesystem, and later deleted as a nighly batchjob ? Assuming expunge renames/moves messages, and don't do a copy + delete.. Does something like this make sense ? -jf

[Dovecot] dovecot + sendmail, what LDA setup?

I have an existing setup with sendmail, dovecot, on debian. I want to move LDA and move from using mbox to using Maildir. I have only 'real' users and aliases, no virtual users. What is a recommended, trouble free, LDA setup? procmail is of course on possibility, but I'd be unlikely ever to use any of its advanced features, just simple local mail delivery. I'd like to use deliver, but most of the dovecot as LDA sample configs I have seen seem to assume I am using it for virtual users. Advice? Pointers to a simple working setup for sendmail, dovecot, Maildir? Cheers David

[Dovecot] re-indexing moved mail

I have a huge block of email that was misdelivered into the wrong folder. Moving it where it should be is not just all from one folder to being all of another folder. Basically, the index files need to be rebuilt. Looking in the wiki I cannot find how to do this. It all seems to be about installation, and no administrative tools. Or would it be just as simple as delete certain index files and they would be automagically rebuilt? -- sHiFt HaPpEnS!

I created a virtual mailbox which maps to a single physical mailbox (in Dovecot 1.x I did this with a symlink but had intermittent problems with Dovecot 2.0 doing the same.) However, I can only copy one message at a time into the mailbox. OK - I thought this was going to be easy. Maybe it is. I'm just not that good at reading directions. Trying to use dsync. Getting this error: Mail locations must use the same virtual mailbox hierarchy separator (specify separator for the default namespace) Currently using maildir. The setup is as follows: mail_uid = mail mail_gid = mail mail_location = maildir:/vhome/%d/home/%n:INDEX=/imap-cache/%d-%n I don't have any namespace setting. Not quite sure what a namespace is or why I need one. This is what I'm trying to run: dsync -u marc(a)perkel.com backup sdbox:/email/%d/home/%n What I'm hoping to do is do a mass conversion while running. Then shut it down - do a second quick pass - and bring it up in sdbox format. Thanks in advance.

Hello, I just installed dovecot version 2.0.8 from the source tarball. After doing ./configure, make, and make install, I don't have the dovecotpw binary anywhere. It is not in /usr/local/bin or /usr/local/sbin where the other binaries are; I also did a find / for it and don't see it. Is there some configuration flag I'm missing? I read the flags in ./configure --help and nothing seems obviously applicable to me. Is there a cryptography library I could be missing? I have the libs installed for crypt, md5, etc. Thanks, Kristina

[Dovecot] namespaces and noselect

Hello, I am trying to use two namespaces to create an "archival" directory that is stored as mboxes (the rest of my tree is all stored as maildirs). However, when I add the second namespace, suddenly Dovecot starts emitting, in response to the LIST command, a second version of the INBOX that is marked as \NoSelect. [Dovecot] Finally upgrading from v1.0.15 to v1.2.16 -- advice please

It's long over due, but now I finally plan on upgrading from v1.0.15 to v1.2.16 on our servers. Would appreciate any comments! We have 7 servers, all running of the same GPFS filesystem. Both maildirs and indexes are stored here. We use dovecot for POP/IMAP and deliver. Currently we're using mysql as authentication source, but want to move to using ldap instead. Can we upgrade one server at a time, or do we need to upgrade all servers at the same time ? http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Upgrading/1.1 says "Index files have slightly changed as well. Upgrading to v1.1 should go transparently, but moving back to v1.0 might again cause some errors." which makes me think we can't have both versions running against the same users ? Also, if we upgrade only one server, should we switch to "mmap_disable=no" on this one, or keep running with "mmap_disable=yes" on all servers ? "NFS users should now set mail_nfs_storage=yes and mail_nfs_index=yes." Does this apply to any shared/networked filesystems, and is this relevant for GPFS ? Hi, I've changed my running qmail/vpopmail/procmail/courier-imap/sqwebmail installation to qmail/vpopmail/siege/dovecot/horde imp. So far, I've got everything running. Authentification with vpopmail as passdb is working, Mail delivery with siege into different Mail folders is working as well. I changed that so the socket is owned by the user vpopmail. - Then I created a folder "Test" via IMAP for one of my accounts - Then I copied via Horde IMP (so via IMAP) a message to that new folder - I requeried dovecot.expires in my database and it is still empty - I enabled logging for my MySQL DB and with that I found out, that no connect with the "dovecot" user is made at all so of course the table is empty. - I created a siege rule to move a mail directly to that Test folder when a specific Subject is used. lda moves the mail on arrival but still no MySQL connection is made. Hi, I've recently significantly improved the automated Dovecot Debian package builder. At the beginning it only produced i386 binaries for Debian testing. A few weeks back I added a slave builder that builds packages for Debian stable. Today I have extended the slave builder with support for multiple architectures and I've added amd64 binaries to the repository. The master builder still builds packages for testing/i386 every hour. The slaves check for new source packages about 20 minutes later. [Dovecot] Problem with requiring client certificates for external connections

Folks, I'm trying to configure my dovecot installation to require client certificates for external/Internet connections, while still allowing my local network to not need certificates. This configuration is for Dovecot 2 (2.0.8 in Fedora 14), and I've tried to use the "remote" block to give different definitions for my local network vs the defaults. While most options seem to be set fine, if I set "auth_ssl_require_client_cert" to yes as the default, and reset it to no for my local network, dovecot still requests a client certificate and fails as one is not supplied. Am I correct that it can be reset in a "remote" block, or is it treated differently to other options? In fact do I have the configuration correct, as there doesn't really seem to be anything documenting "remote" or "remote_ip" or related items for Dovecot 2. Related to this, much of the documentation states that the variable is "ssl_require_client_cert", seems to be accepted by ignored, vs "auth_ssl_require_client_cert" which does have some effects. Also, in the configuration dump, it duplicates the netmask. The configuration is below, as generated with "dovecot -n". [Dovecot] Courier-mta with Dovecot LDA again

Hi all Sorry for repost, but i don't believe that there is noone who know where the problem can be. At least developers should know :-) I have sent this post once, but without answer. I have setup dovecot lda instead of maildrop on my courier server. Delivery is working, sieve plugin too, but i can't figure out why lda can't send emails via sendmail (vacation). I always get error Error: Sendmail process terminated abnormally, exit status 67 And i know why, but i don't know how to setup lda to make it work . Here is .courier file where is redirect to lda. | /usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver -a $RECIPIENT -f $SENDER But the deliver does not pass recipient address to sendmail. Hello, We have dovecot 2.0.8 in our servers with Scientific Linux SL release 5.2 (Boron). We want to ignore a mailbox and its child mailboxes. [Dovecot] Renaming IMAP folders does not affect children

Just recently Thunderbird users reported problems when renaming folders, and it seems that RFC 2060 (sec. 6.3.5) requires children of a renamed folder to be renamed, too. new setup of Dovecot 2.0.8 with postfix local users are simply defined as Linux users named xxx, yyy et cetera; IMAP access is fine with that users. Postfix is delivering mails with two domains (to xxx(a)mydomain.com or xxx(a)mydomain.org) and these are rejected by dovecot with 550: user doesn't exist. I've tested the possible usernames with "doveadm user" xxx: okay xxx(a)mydoman.com: "userdb lookup: user xxx(a)mydomain.com doesn't exist" xxx(a)mydoman.org: "userdb lookup: user xxx(a)mydomain.org doesn't exist" Dovecot2 wiki says "Dovecot doesn't care much about domains in usernames" Okay, how to I get dovecot to ignore the domain part (or accept the two defined domains) when mails are delivered from postfix? [Dovecot] archiving

Hi, recently I installed the newest 2.x version of dovecot working with postfixadmin/mysql and it works great, thanks Timo, however I been reading dovecot's mailing list archived messages and haven't run across a good solution for archiving mail with dovecot. There was mention of using rsync but I was looking for incoming mail to be copied to another folder, maybe called archive J, in real time where the user would have only read access to the messages in the archive folder and the expire plug-in would delete messages older then x number of days. Does anyone have an suggestions on how I can implement this, I would also like to hear how some people were implement archiving if they do it differently. Also as far as shared calendars with dovecot what are my options. Sorry if it's a little off topic. Thanks, Paul

I plan on putting two dovecot directors in front of our backend dovecot pop/imap servers, instead of our current haproxy loadbalancing of the connections -- but how do we handle SSL in such a setup. Will all SSL be terminated on the directors automatically, and then proxyed plain text, or is there any configuration needed to achieve this ? Does it matter that the directors are v2.0 while the backends are running v1.2 ? -jf

I get a similar behavior between dovecot quota plugin and courier quota with the attached patch. When the client change flags, then is forced to recalc. This is because I don't know how to get the changed flags on quota sync method. new Dovecot 2.0.8 installation on Opensuse 11.3 I got the error "lmtp (xxx(a)mydomain.yy) Error: user xxx(a)mydomain.yy: Initialization failed: Namespace '': mbox: mbox requires client_limit=1 for service" while trying to transfer mails by lmtp from postfix to dovecot. I googled and looked on the dovecot wiki about this client_limit issue, but no success. What's the syntax of the client_limit and where to place it? Into which config file? Inside the global namespace doesn't seems to work (error on dovecot start). -What's the side effect of this setting to my IMAP clients? Hi all Without the listescape plugin I see the following things happen: - If I share a mailbox, dovecot-acl-list in Maildir root is updated accordingly. - If I create a subfolder in an already shared mailbox the dovecot-acl file of the parent folder is copied to the new folder and dovecot-acl-list is updated as well. When I activate the "listescape" plugin, this doesn´t happen. Additionally (with listescape enabled), if I create a folder which contains a dot and then share that folder the dovecot-acl-list looses all entries except the first found shared folder without a dot in foldername. [Dovecot] Shared Folders via Symlinking

Hi folks, I'm trying to set up shared folders via symlinking and have come across a problem. I created a folder for one user, then symlinked it to another. I figured that one thing that is likely to happen at some point is that user 2 is going to decide they don't want to look at that folder any more, and will delete it, so I tried this. Much to my relief, it didn't delete the actual mails, just the symlink. However, it did alter the dovecot.index.cache file to indicate that the folder had been removed, and subsequent attempts to select this folder via the primary user resulted in an error, "NO Mailbox was deleted under us". I had to delete dovecot.index.cache to get it working again. [Dovecot] Dovecot 1.2.12 + Postfix + virtual domains: delivering to system users

As mentioned in my previous posting, I've set up a mailserver for a domain of Winboxen, authenticated through Active Directory. After some struggles, I finally got that working. But I also need to receive emails for a few system users on the mailserver (like postmaster, and a couple of accounts set up for maintaining the system). I thought, based on the way I read the documentation, that I could just add a "userdb passwd", ahead of the "userdb ldap", and deliver would find their home directory maildirs. The virtual users would fail the passwd search, fall through to the LDAP check, and deliver would drop their mail into their maildirs in the /var/mailstore tree. I knew the system users wouldn't be able to login to the IMAP server, but this isn't a concern. Instead, the system users' mail got bounced, after an auth check via the "master" socket (from Postfix, I guess: it's a transient process) whose details don't get logged. And the virtual users' lookups (done by deliver) returned made-up UIDs and GIDs, and maildir locations (/home/<realm>/<username>) completely different from what the LDAP lookup normally returns (/var/mailstore/<username>). So what am I missing here? I managed to work around this by adding the system users to the Postfix virtual.db, but it would be nice to not need to do that. It would also be nice to neable the system users to check email by logging in to the IMAP serve, but I'm reluctant to even try that after the way delivery went completely wonky. Thanks, Ran

[Dovecot] Can doveadm rebuild thread indexes?

I'm already using "doveadm search" to update my squat fts indexes (dovecot.index.search and dovecot.index.search.uids) but I'd like to also update dovecot's thread index file (dovecot.index.thread) using doveadm. I checked the new wiki and the archives but didn't see any option for this. (I'm running 2.0.8) The alternative (AFAIK) is to write a script that signs in to IMAP and does "thread references UTF-8 ALL" in each folder. As an aside, could the dovecot LDA do any of this work? I'd surely be willing to spend the resources at delivery time to keep those indexes updated if it meant I didn't have to run a cron job to keep them updated. -David Warden

I am using 2.0.8. Anonymous binds are no longer supported in the environment I am using. I need to change my userdb ldap setup to bind. I believe the ldap server does Kerberos (or can) authentication. My users are authenticating using Kerberos or Kerberos/PAM. This needs to stay in place. Can anyone suggest how I might go about changing my setup to work? I take a look into dovecot-keywords file and I see that: 1) I have only one row 0 NonJunk 2) dovecot-keywords file is not present inside every directory. How I can restore normal status? [Dovecot] IMAP messages not being marked read

I recently moved from Fedora 13 to Fedora 14 and consequently to dovecot 2.0.8. Since then, I have observed that messages are not being marked as read in all cases. The general behavior is: 1. Use my mail client to read all unseen messages. All mail folders show no messages unread. 2. Tell mail client to check for new mail. 3. Mail client now says that some folders have new mail (1 or more messages) 4. Clicking on a folder with new mail (say with 6 unread) shows that there are no unread messages. I have observed this behavior using both kmail and squirrelmail so do not believe it is a mail client problem. I have maildir folders to which mail is delivered using procmail recipes directly to the appropriate dovecot folder. In these folders, I notice that the "cur" directory has a matching number of messages that do not have an "S" flag on the end of the file name. Unfortunately, my install of Fedora 14 overlaid the partition with Fedora 13, so I cannot confirm the version of dovecot I was using with no issues. (so very glad I use separate disk and partition for the OS!) I can say that all configuration was in one dovecot.conf file, not the multiple conf.d files I see on Fedora 14. Any assistance on what to troubleshoot next is greatly appreciated! The info about my dovecot is shown below. The maildir's are on local LVM/RAID and not remote. Hello Timo, I switched this morning from dovecot-1.2.12 to 2.0.8 with a basic setup (high performance login mode, Maildir, everyhing on NFS, one shared but unused namespace). No problem so far except that some Thunderbird users who wouldn't succeed in moving messages from some one folder to another. They'd get a message about some illegal character in the mailboxname (already existing mailbox of course). This is user input so I don't have any details nor sufficient element to consider it a real problem. A Thunderbird restart seems to solve the problem. My questions were : . is there a different handling in the hierarchy separator (internal or advertized for the namespace) ? (I use "/" for both namespaces and "." since in Maildir). . is there a different handling in the non-ASCII mailbox names ? Could it be related ? . if something goes really wrong, is it safe to revert to 1.2.12 ? Maybe some files has non-compatible format (dovecot-uidlist, indexes, ...) ? [Dovecot] over quota issue

I have a situation where if a user is over quota and sending through postfix I get an error, now this error only happens if the user is over quota, otherwise it works with no problem. However if sending using /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/dovecot-lda it works every time even if overquota, any ideas? I just can't seem to figure this one out. I have a Windoze-only client who wants to move their mail hosting from godaddy.com hosting to an in-house system. I'm pitching Linux as an alternative to Exchange, and trying to set up a demonstration system for them. While a long-time Linux user, my server admin experience has been in setting up front-ends (mostly Apache-based web interfaces) for the embedded systems I specialize in. The goal is to have an IMAP server where the users don't have Linux IDs, and only need to manually login to the Active Directory domain controller. The client has multiple Internet domains, but all users are in the same Active Directory realm internally. With the help of the how-tos at linuxmail.info, I got the system to the point of being able to authenticate logins for both IMAP and SMTP (usng dovecot-SASL). I tried using PAM first, but it didn't work: running kinit from the command line takes over 90 seconds to get a ticket, and Dovecot timed out after 60 on every login attempt. So I switched to LDAP. Note: I still don't understand why, but authentication through Active Directory didn't work until I changed the querying distinguished name from the "cn=,dc=,dc=" format to "user(a)xxxx.local" format. I have Postfix using dovecot-deliver as the LDA, but I hit a snag: deliver is not putting the domain name in the path to the maildir. [Dovecot] Is this really a user agent issue?

I suspect this is a user agent issue, given that Evolution is flaky in so many areas. When I deliver mail to a subfolder/subbox (e.g. the -m option in the deliver command), and Evolution doesn't know of it, yet, creating it fails, and Evolution still can't get to it. Doing things the other way around (create it in Evolution first, then deliver to it) works fine. Seems to be silliness to me. Just wondered if any Dovecot aspects might be involved ... such as the fact that the case is different (e.g. "INBOX" in the filesystem, but "Inbox" in Evolution). -- sHiFt HaPpEnS!

[Dovecot] How to get a working dovecot.conf?

Hi, I installed openSUSE 11.3 server version, and followed the guidelines from: http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-server-opensuse-11.3-x86_64-ispconfig-3 Everything works, accept loggin into dovecot. For many days i tried to get logged into dovecot, from localhost, from other pc in the lan, from squirrelmail, not possible. I read manuals on http://wiki.dovecot.org/ and tried to set the passwd db like: auth default { .. passdb passwd-file { args = /etc/passwd.dovecot } .. The "args" were not accepted according to the output from dovecot -n As now i installed dovecot 20, with a fresh dovecot.conf. Ofcourse this was not working, so i 'updated' ISPConfig. Hello! Got a panic&assertion failed with LMTP proxy. Target Dovecot LMTP server hanged and Dovecot LMTP proxy server started logging panics/assertions. Hello When I use my iphone to read my emails through IMAP I can see ALL folders that are in my email home directory not only those are listed in the .subscriptions file ... This should be a real security problem Anyone have the same problem ? Thanks

[Dovecot] director in large(ish) environments

Hey all, just wondering who here is running the director service in a larger environment. I just switched our whole production setup to the director and am quite pleased with the result. We're doing a peak of about 25000 tot 30000 concurrent sessions on 3 servers. But ive shut 1 server down a couple of days ago to see what would happen and 2 servers carried the load easily. (16 CPU, 24GB memory servers). If others are using the director on larger setups maybe we can all post when things do or dont work well. Now to see if the solution is better than the problem :) Cor

[Dovecot] Migrate from Maildir to mdbox

Looking at http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Migration/MailFormat, I do not see much on how to do a migration from Maildir to mdbox. That page isn't quite updated it looks. I have several domains (virtual) with the following storage layout: /var/spool/virtual/$domain. So the users have their mail stored as follows: /var/spool/virtual/domain1/$user/Maildir /var/spool/virtual/domain2/$user/Maildir /var/spool/virtual/domain3/$user/Maildir /var/spool/virtual/domainN/$user/Maildir >From the wiki, I am told the steps to take are: 1. Set mail_location=mdbox:~/mdbox 2. Run "doveadm mirror -u username maildir:~/Maildir" The instruction above confuses me because in my situation, I don't have a "username" per se. dovecot-deliver knows how to figure out my usernames and their mail_location settings. How do I derive my "username" when users are virtual, stored in MySQL back end? Again, the right command seems to rely on dsync, not "doveadm mirror". I could manually get all the values for the users for each domain and run: dysnc -u $u -o "mail_location=maildir:/var/spool/virtual/domain1/$u/Maildir" mirror "mdbox:/var/spool/virtual/domain1/$u/mdbox" This is so manual, especially because I have to (if I remember well) create /var/spool/virtual/domain1/$u/mdbox (and have the permissions right) before running dysnc. I really could use some help. I have been using dovecot and qmail on Debian for years with no problems. I just replaced qmail with Postfix and have not been able to get messages to dovecot via deliver. I have tried to set it up as a virtual mailbox only "no lookup necessary" system following the vaious help pages. I am using just a single user vmail:mail to execute postfix and deliver. I'm using dovecot 2.0 as proxy to make easy the migration from Courier to Dovecot. ¿Is it possible to use doveadm kick on a proxy connection? [Dovecot] Status update

Just in case you're wondering: I should hopefully soon get back to answering all the pending mails and start coding. I moved back to Finland a week ago. I should get my proper internet connection on Wednesday, although this 3.5G isn't too bad either. I couldn't get my old Mac Mini to work properly anymore so I went and bought a new machine. Dovecot recompiles in 43 seconds now. :)

I forgot the answer for this: in http://wiki.dovecot.org/AuthDatabase/PasswdFile, we have the passwd file defined as user:password:uid:gid:(gecos):home:(shell):extra_fields What should the uid and gid be associated with? In my setup I told postfix to use Dovecot LDA's deliver, which then is saving files as uid:gid of 1500:1500. How would that affect the uid:gid used in the passwd file? From what I read in the dovecot's wiki, you want them *not* to be anything that has the rights to access the emails. So, does that mean any value for them will do?

[Dovecot] Maildir feature I'd like to see - SSD for newer messages

SSD drives are very fast but expensive. So I have a crude idea that I'd like to see. May not be practical but would like to get some thoughts on it. Some new SSDs use SATA 3 (6gb/sec) with 355/mb/sec read speeds and 215MB/sec write. Put these in raid 0 and it screams! Can you imagine how fast that would be? What would be nice is if new email were on faster drives with old email being migrated to larger mechanical cheaper storage. Perhaps messages over a month old? From dovecot's perspective it would sort of all look the same but maybe one a week a script would run migrating older messages to slower media. It would also make backups easier. The faster newer messages could be archived hourly. On the weekend after the archiving script was run the older message could be backed up once a week. I'm not sure what it would take to make dovecot seamlessly access email from two different locations or if this is practical. Just wanted to throw the idea out there to see if something sticks.

This is my first post to this list/gmane newsgroup, so please be gentle with me.... :-) Here's my situation: I have a user (the "main boss secretary") who uses MS Outlook 2007 as her email client. She has over 46,000 messages in her inbox, with nobody knows how many more in 75+ different folders & subfolders. Surprisingly, her response time wasn't too terrible up until we had to reboot our mail server the other day (actually, restoring the entire server from a backup). Now it takes anywhere from 10 to 60 seconds for her to switch from 1 folder to another. Details: * Server is Debian running Postfix and Dovecot (both the current release). Using Maildir format stored in the user's ~/Maildir folder. * User connects to server via Imaps. Connection is local using gigabit network (ie. it ain't the network). * Yes, we did all the things on the Outlook side -thinking that is where the problem lays. Rebuild the .pst file, had Outlook re-index, compacted the .pst file, etc. So now I'm thinking that maybe I need to just wipe out all of the ~/Mailder/dovecot* files (including all those in sub-directories) and let it all reindex. Which begets 3 questions: (1) will this help? (2) anyone have a shell script that will remove all those dovecot* files from the user's directory AND all the sub-directories? (3) Any other suggestions I might be missing? -- Chris Barnes

I have a mail server with postfix, dovecot (1.2.15) and deliver lda (dovecot) with 350 users. I have the problem that in this christmas the employees are sending some big files (mainly powerpoints files) to a lot of recipients, because of that the server get a lot of charge (is a Xeon quad core 5405 with 4GB of Ram), i have four disks in Raid 5 configuration (HP E200 controller, not very fast) Is there any option to limit this type of delivery, the total size of the mails delivered to each user (total recipients * size of mail), in dovecot deliver. I don't want to limit the concurrent delivery more lower than 350 recipients and the max size of the mail we can send is 15M. Thanks a lot, -- Andrés Fernando Yacopino

[Dovecot] trying to make cmusieve happen globally

In Dovecot 1.1.11 cmusieve is apparently integrated in the Ubuntu 9.10 package "dovecot-common" since the files are there. I am wanting to right now just do a very basic test of the setup to see how it runs before doing more sophisticated steps that could obscure any errors or bugs (e.g. unit testing). So I took the following example sieve script from the wiki1 documentation: require "fileinto"; if header :contains "X-Spam-Flag" "YES" { fileinto "spam"; } and recoded it to skip the test and just always do the fileinto step like so: require "fileinto"; fileinto "spamtest"; Then I configured my dovecot.conf file (via dovecot-postfix.conf it really points to) by setting: protocol lda { ... mail_plugins = cmusieve mail_plugin_dir = /usr/lib/dovecot/modules/lda ... } and: plugin { sieve_global_path = /etc/dovecot/sieve-global.d/spam.sieve } I manually compiled /etc/dovecot/sieve-global.d/spam.sieve so there also exists /etc/dovecot/sieve-global.d/spam.sievec in the same directory. Then I restarted both Dovecot and Postfix. Mail is being delivered, but still only to the same place it always has. The filesystem shows these sieve files are not being accessed at all. I've read documents http://wiki1.dovecot.org/LDA/Sieve and http://wiki1.dovecot.org/LDA/Sieve/CMU to come up with this. But it just doesn't seem to be happening. So I guess it is a good thing I've broken my testing down into smaller units. Anything standout that I misinterpreted about the documentation? If not, I can post the whole config files (in case there is a conflict with something else I have done). FYI, I'm only trying to do a global sieve, not per-user sieve scripts. The Tbird add-on as protocol logging facility, so you could check that to find out where it hangs exactly. Unfortunately, such issues are notoriously hard to debug when the problems don't occur consistently. I'm hoping Timo can provide some additional insight on this. Hi, I'm trying to setup a system with dovecot to remove the old courier one, and everything (pop3, imap, lmtp, quotas) but managesieve is working fine. It seems like it's a problem with each user having a separate uid, because I have a working similar setup with a single uid working without problems. [Dovecot] Restarting dovecot-auth stops authentication

Hi, The Dovecot wiki states that Dovecot's master restarts all died processes, which is good for availability. [Dovecot] Moving email between folders outside of IMAP context

I'd like to run a script from cron that will scan certain mailboxes and move selected mail from one folder (usually INBOX) to another folder. The basic idea is to move previously detected spam based on headers prepended to the mail. Since I am not able to figure out how to get Postfix to invoke deliver with the -m option in these cases, and not in others, this is one idea I have come up with to deal with it. The big (hopefully obvious) complication seems to be getting the indexes updated. Is there a way to move mail this way AND then have the indexes updated to reflect that move (maybe even if regenerating the entire index all over again)? -- sHiFt HaPpEnS!

[Dovecot] Maildir and Solaris UFS acls

I have a centrally located shared imap folder location. We have several maildir folders with different file system permissions. They are for several groups of people who are loosely related for support purposes. All mail gets delivered to queue1 just fine. The files are group writable by group1. Some of the mail gets moved via imap to queue2. Queue2's maildir tree is configured with Solaris UFS acls such that any new files are read/write by group1 or group2. If a new file is created within queue2 anywhere, it has the correct permissions. However, if a message is moved from queue1 to queue2, it retains the permissions that it had within queue1. This is what happens if I use 'mv' within the file system, btw. Is there any way to configure dovecot such that if a person moves or copies a message to another imap folder, it creates a new file instead of doing a link or mv or whatever? If not, no problem; I was just hoping for an elegant solution to my particular problem. :-) queue1 - read/write by group1 queue2 - read/write by group1 & group2 through solaris ACLs BTW, if any file whatsoever in queue2 is not readable by group2, those in group2 cannot read _anything_ in queue2. thanks Tom Lieuallen

Hi I seem to be getting an error when quotas are enabled. Also I noticed that the quota_ rule settings don't actually get used, the only settings that are used are on the sql.conf file. [Dovecot] Best way to move mail to an archive

Hello all...new to dovecot and this list. I have a question that may have been answered before, but I can't find anything yet that addresses it directly. I installed dovecot 2.0.8 (+postfix, fetchmail) on a small server to manage several e-mail accounts. I love this software! So, to back to the question: I'd like to archive e-mail as it ages into a single IMAP archive directory. Ideally, I would like to set up a cron job to search for e-mail in all of my imap directories that older that 'X' days and move it to the archive directory. I know that dovecot wants to manage e-mail movement thru the IMAP interface, so I'm leery of just using ordinary Linux commands to move mail around and bypass the IMAP protocol. Does anybody have any recommendations about dovecot/IMAP safe commands I could use to accomplish this task? Thanks in advance and I apologize for not being more knowledgeable about this subject. [Dovecot] Problem with expunge

I'm running Dovecot 2.0.8. The other day I tested doveadm expunge on a test Inbox with a few messages received over the course of a day, and using savedbefore <a few hours>, and it seemed to work. However, today I was testing converting some maildirs over to sdbox, and noticed odd behavior: it's deleting all messages in the specified folder instead of just the ones matching the condition I'm using ("savedbefore 4w"). The command I'm using is "doveadm -Dv expunge -A mailbox Trash savedbefore 4w" Because of the conversion, all of the ctimes for all of the files are actually the same (basically, a few minutes ago), due to the converstion to sdbox from maildir, so I would expect that either it doesn't delete any of them or looks inside at some header of the mail (half of which was received/placed into Trash before 4w ago and half of which wasn't). I definitely don't expect full-on deletion... Any idea what's going on? Thanks, Jeff

Hi, after deciding to use Dovecot 2.0.8 as a postfix LDA using mysql DB I'm running into some issues. I started to follow, http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/DovecotLDAPostfixAdminMySQL but noticed that the auth settings on the config changed, after looking through the dovecot wiki I think I have that issue fixed. However I still can't get the SQL part to work right, below is what I have on the conf.d/sql.conf and the error I get. service dovecot status doveconf: Fatal: Error in configuration file /usr/local/etc/dovecot/conf.d/sql.conf line 1: Unknown setting: password_query Where do I put the sql connect string, in the URL above that along with the driver type went on the sql.conf file but that is no longer the case. If anyone has a better reference/suggestions for what im trying to do I would appreciated it. LIST "" * * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "INBOX" * LIST (\Noselect \HasChildren) "/" "Shared/user(a)do.main" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "Shared/user(a)do.main/INBOX" * LIST (\HasChildren) "/" "Public" . OK List completed. . LIST "Shared/" * * LIST (\Noselect \HasChildren) "/" "Shared/user(a)do.main" . OK List completed. . LIST "Public/" * . OK List completed. With LIST "Shared/" the other users INBOX is missing, so with namespace capable clients like Thunderbird it is impossible to see or subscribe this folder. The "Public/" namespace has some subfolders, but only for other acl_groups and I don't have rights to access any of them. So the LIST "Public/" looks good. However, with LIST "" * it is shown without the trailing slash and with \HasChildren where it should be hidden. I cannot even re-start it: [root@dsmail /]# service dovecot start Starting Dovecot Imap: Can't open log file /var/log/dovecot.log: Permission denied If I create those manually (touch /var/log/dovecot.log, .../dovecot_info.log, .. dovecot_debug.log) service starts, but reports an error in dovecot.log: "Dec 16 14:55:30 master: Error: symlink(/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf, /var/run/dovecot/dovecot.conf) failed: Permission denied" and users still cannot login. Where do I start troubleshooting? [Dovecot] load increase after upgrade to 2.0.8

I upgraded most of our servers from 1.2.x to 2.0.8 and am noticing a really big increase in server load. This is across the board, not any specific server. [Dovecot] How to avoid "authenticated user not found" - messages when using multiple Ldap userdbs/passdbs?

Following: We've got a Dovecot 1.0.10 running on Ubuntu Hardy. Till now we used to have only mail accounts under our own domain, but since we're also a webhoster the people began to ask if there is a possibility to use there own Domains in there mail address. For addressing this we changed our Ldap Tree Structur: users which had been there befor remain in there old subtree, new accounts for Virtual Domains are located below an "vd=<domain>,ou=domains,..." subtree. The main Problem at this: old users are used to login only with their username and password, new users has to login via their complete mail address and their password. This is not going to change in the future so I tried to do this: Using two userdb/passdb - entries, in each case one for the old users and one for the new ones. If a user is not found through the first request the second is tried. If this failed too, the user gets rejected. The Problem with this: when not found during the first try the request logs an "authenticated user ot found" - message, no matter if trying via the second etry is successful. Is there a way to tell dovecot, that the user is not "not found" until __both__ requests failed? Regards Sebastian

Hi, I try to upgrade my dovecot server to the 2.x branch. But i have a big problem with the mailbox which are over quota. [Dovecot] adding servers to director_mail_servers

Is there a specific order in which one has to add servers to director_mail_servers, Let's say I have 20 loadbalanced director servers (I dont, but for arguments sake). I want to add 5 servers to director_mail_servers. If I do this by restarting each director server 1 by 1 with an updated conf, it seems the 5 new servers dont get added. Or at least I dont get what makes it work eventually. Only after restarting a few times they seem to all want to agree on the new list of servers. Cor

[Dovecot] users's mailboxes = mbox , shared mailboxes = maildir ... is it possible ?

Hello I solved my previous SSL problem by reinstalling dovecot2 ... :-) at FreeBSD 8.1 Now I'm using dovecot 2 , cool ... Actually my production mail server runs with MBOX format but reading the dovecot 2 wiki I read shared mailboxes are only working well with Maildir format. As I would like to setup some shared mailboxes, is it possible to have MBOX format for normal users ( UNIX NIS users ) and Maildir format for shared mailboxes to gain access to the per-user \Seen flag Or do I have to convert ALL my server to Maildir format ? Thanks a lot for your help
