[Dovecot] post-login scripting using PHP

I'd like to write post-login script using PHP. I noticed every shell post-login script ends with: exec "$@", which effectively executes dovecot's script-login. However, while I try to do the same (?) in PHP: $prog = $argv[1]; exec ("$prog"); it doesn't work. The client timeouts, dovecot (2.0.6) says "Disconnected for inactivity". May be I don't clearly see the way post-login scripting should work. Any hint to make it done? Regards, MU

[Dovecot] Exchange-replacement with SOGo

I thought some people here would be interested: Recently SOGo added support for OpenChange, which means Outlook can natively access it via MAPI the same way as Exchange. Everything is open source, and the great thing about SOGo is that it uses existing IMAP server for mails rather than reimplementing yet another one itself. They seem to prefer Cyrus, but apparently Dovecot should work too. For non-mail (calendar, etc) it uses SQL, but I heard it's not too difficult to replace that either if someone would prefer some NoSQL database or something. http://www.sogo.nu/ http://www.openchange.org/

[Dovecot] doveadm-expunge not expunging when ran from cron

Hi! I noticed that this command ... : for USERNAME in ${USERS};do /usr/local/bin/doveadm -Dv expunge -u "${USERNAME}" mailbox sa.* SAVEDBEFORE 1d done ... does not expunge mails if ran from crontab. It shows in the Debug output what would have been done, but it doesn't really expunge those mails. This command runs daily, and every day the list of expunged mails (in the Debug output) just grows and grows, and the sa.* directories stay the same (except the new mails of course). However, if I run it from a terminal it really expunges the mails. [Dovecot] merge mdboxes

Hi there, after migration we have a very big problem... there are two mailboxes in /var/mail/username/mailboxes/ /var/mail/username/mailboxes/inbox /var/mail/username/mailboxes/inbox2 i DO have to merge these boxes, but i found no tools for this step. is there any way with doveadm oder dsync to move alle messages from mdbox inbox2 into mdbox inbox? i hope you all can tell me a way to do this - its a very very big problem at the moment. By the way - logging in via imap with thunderbird und move them on that way is not my favorite solution cause i have to do this for hundreds of users... i hope you can help me! thanks a lot! The problem is that after it occurred no new clients could complete connections, but existing clients worked ok. Incoming connections were accepted, but then nothing would happen. As far as I can tell the parent would fork new child processes but they couldn't complete initialisation. Mail clients simply complained of a timeout during connection. This was affecting all users. With regard to error disconnections - yes a delay is a good idea.

[Dovecot] delivering mail to public mbox with permission 660?

I am migrating a couple old RH servers running sendmail and UW-IMAP to a new Ubuntu 10.04 servers running Postfix and Dovecot. I have everything working reasonably well except that the permissions of newly created mbox mail folders is always 600. I have reviewed the archives, google, and double checked everything is as suggested in the Dovecot Wiki / SharedMailboxes / Permissions. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 packages postfix 2.7.0-1, dovecot-common, dovecot-imapd, dovecot-pop3d, and dovecot-postfix (all version 1.2.9-1ubuntu6.1). I plan to install amavisd-new, et.al. for spam filtering and anti-virus but have held off until I get Postfix and Dovecot working 100%. I have configured Postfix and Dovecot to use mbox mailboxes. I chose mbox becaus I have a LOT of shared mbox folders to migrate and decided it best to first migrate to Postfix/Dovecot mbox and later worry about migrating to maildir (as suggested on the Dovecot wiki mailbox format page). I have configured private (also as default) and public namespaces with the public mailboxes stored in /var/mail/public. /var/mail/public has rwxrws--- and is group tarts (the shared "company" group for this server). Initially I had procmail configured via the mailbox_command. Initial test mail sent to user tarts triggered creation of /var/mail/tarts with 660 permissions as expected. I then changed the configuration to use deliver via the mailbox_command. I did this because procmail appears to be unmaintained and to benefit from deliver's support for indexing at time of delivery and seive. I then added user testuser with primary group testuser and supplemental group tarts. I made sure testuser's home directory and mail sub dir had rwxrws--- permissions. I sent test mail to user testuser and had both user tarts and user testuser create some subfolders in public (via Thunderbird accounts) THE PROBLEM is that mbox folders that hold messages are created with permssion 600. My understanding, from the Dovecot wiki and other docs/postings is that the folders should be 660 given the /var/mail permssions of rwxrwsrwt and ~/mail permssions of rwxrws--- MY QUESTION is how do I correct the configuration and/or directory permissions so that mbox folders and .imap indices (especially public/ ones) are created with 660 permissions thus allowing users who belong to a common group (eg tarts) to access the public mailboxes? It appears all Dovecot configuration options to establish directory/box perms or mask, such as umask, have been deprectated and no longer work. Hi Timo, looks like virtual plugin is broken now with my setup dovecot 2.0.6 cant say to which version it stopped working ( didnt tested it trough all ) but has worked i see nothing special in log why it stopped working it should show unseen mail i.e in folder Junk too with pop3 clients, but only shows new inbox mails after all i am confused what using better pop3_uidl_format = %08Xu%08Xv ( most compatible ) or pop3_uidl_format = %g ( better with virtual ) pop3_reuse_xuidl = ? what ist the most compatible/konservative setting with maildir on a cluster filesystem pop3_save_uidl = ? what ist Hello, I use Cyrus in my mailservers and I intend to migrate it to Dovecot. Cyrus has a setting that purge the emails from a mailbox under a pre-defined criteria. I'm trying to convert from an old Dovecot (1.0.15) and mbox to a new Dovecot and maildir. I'm running into several problems with dsync which are causing my mboxes not to convert. If I use LAYOUT=fs (as I'd prefer) I get an error because I have a mailbox called "subscriptions", and none of my messages convert. Is there a way to get dovecot to put its own metadata in dotfiles instead? [Dovecot] Recommendation for OCFS2 filesystem type

Hello When creating an OCFS2 filesystem, one can specify a "filesystem type" option: -T filesystem-type Specify how the filesystem is going to be used, so that mkfs.ocfs2 can chose optimal filesystem parameters for that use. The supported filesystem types are: mail Appropriate for file systems which will have many meta data updates. Creates a larger journal. datafiles Appropriate for file systems which will host a rela‐ tively small number of very large files. A small journal is selected. Cluster size will be at least 128K. Considering I'm using a separate partition for the dovecot indices, and that I'm using mdbox, would it be more appropriate to use 'datafiles' for the mail location partition and 'mail' just for the indices? Or would 'mail' be appropriate for both even with the larger files created by mdbox? Thanks, Andre

I have problems with subscriptions for the shared mailboxes: SUBSCRIBE ^shared^user^box leads to entry shared^user^box in ~/Maildir/subscriptions file. All subscriptions for folders in personal namespace use the "layout" separator (".") thought. LSUB "" "*" does not show the just subscribed folder, but it does after I manually change the entry to read shared.user.box Bug? [Dovecot] shared folders general question

Hello all. Thanks to the patience off Timo i finally got my shared folders working. I have one more question. Is it possible if you share the inbox, that all subfolders will be visable to. I can not see the subfolders of the shared inbox. This is not very useful if the user which shares his inbox, has sieve rules active that stores e-mail directly into subfolders. Hello, Upgraded from 1.2.x to 2.0.5, converted configuration as described in http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Upgrading/2.0 and now I'm unable to log in to imap server. [Dovecot] Manual login to SSL-protected port?

List, good afternoon, Dovecot and mail clients work fine. Several recent postings mention trying telnet to check this or that and, since I was considering using a spreadsheet plug-in to analyse some mail statistics by directly connecting to the server, I thought I'd try to test what the command sequence was that I might be able to use, and what message data was available (headers etc). We use only SSL-protected ports. Is it possible to manually login to dovecot when dovecot uses SSL-protected imap ports? I've tried telnet and the telnet localhost 993 login user pass resulted in connection closure, as I (think I) would expect because telnet doesn't use SSL (does it?). I checked man telnet and it described authentication options but when I tried telnet localhost 993 auth enable ? to check what auth protocols it allows, the connection closed. I tried SSH but it just 'hung' - presumably SSH expects an SSH server at the other end, not dovecot. Is it possible to manually login to a dovecot SSL imap port? regards, Ron

I'd like to add S=<size> and W=<vsize> to the filenames in my Maildir storage for newly delivered mails. But I cannot find where I can make Dovecot's LDA add those. In glibc 2.10 (32 bit) fallocate() exists but fallocate64() doesn't. When _FILE_OFFSET_BITS==64, fallocate() is a redirect to fallocate64() and the program can't be linked (fails to find symbol fallocate64). See http://bugzilla.redhat.com/500487 Attached patch detects fallocate() more robustly to guard against this problem. Cheers, Paul.

Hi all, I have running dovecot-1.2.15 and I try whith dovecot-antispam-1.3 and 1.2-* if it's running for me. I use mailtrain backend to call a script when I move a mail to a specific folder. Then, I set allow_append_to_spam: yes At .config for Make dovecot-antispam. I set the plugin's name to: PLUGINNAME=isspam An then, I have another copy of the sources and .config with plugin's name set to: PLUGINNAME=nospam With this. If I put on dovecot.conf protocol imap { ... mail_plugins = isspam nospam ... } When I try to login, the connection is aborted and dovecot connection die with coredump Are there are any people with similar settings ? (doble instance of antispam plugin)

Hi All, I've built the dovecot-antispam-plugin from hg.dovecot.org and installed it. I've turned on debugging with "mail_debug = yes" in dovecot.conf and restarted dovecot. However, the antispam plugin module gets loaded by dovecot, but then nothing, i.e. when moving mail from Inbox to Spam and vice versa, I see nothing. How do I get debug messages from the dovecot-antispam-plugin? [Dovecot] minimize mbox mdbox fragmentation

Hi Timo, Any chance the mbox/mdbox writer code could be modified to do physical preallocation on files to help avoid file(system) fragmentation? Constantly appending a file is the prime recipe for causing fragmentation, and mbox is notorious for this--not a fault of Dovecot but the nature of the mbox beast. Obviously maildir doesn't have such a problem, but some (many?) of us still prefer mbox for many reasons, fast full body search being one, portability being another. mdbox file fragmentation could benefit from such a change as well. I was having a discussion on the XFS list about this, trying to tweak XFS mount options to mitigate the fragmentation effects. Alas, there is no way to do this purely at the filesystem level. From Dave Chinner, one of the lead XFS devs: "What you want is _physical_ preallocation, not speculative preallocation. i.e. look up XFS_IOC_RESVSP or FIEMAP so your application does _permanent_ preallocate past EOF. Alternatively, the filesystem will avoid the truncation on close() if the file has the APPEND attribute set and the application is writing via O_APPEND... The filesystem cannot do everything for you. Sometimes the application has to help...." How great would the effort need to be to implement something like this? Would the return on investment be sufficient to justify doing this, in your eyes? -- Stan

Hi, I have a simple dovecot installation, version 1.2.12 of ubuntu 10.10. I also have a straightforward newbie question! I've hunted in the wiki and on the wider web, but not yet found a solution. Current status: I have successfully configured imap with tls, accessed on port 993, and for security require a valid client certificate to be presented, using ssl_require_client_cert and ssl_verify_client_cert. This is all working fine! Now I want to add a SquirrelMail service to the same server. This will connect using IMAP over port 143, without TLS. My question is: how do I achieve this! At the moment, I simply get the following in the logs: Aborted login (cert required, client didn't start TLS): method=PLAIN, rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured If I comment out the "ssl_require_client_cert = yes" in the auth default section, SquirrelMail then works fine … but I can also connect remotely without presenting a valid certificate, which is no good! At the moment I have a single auth section in dovecot.conf, the "auth default { ... }" section. I wondered if I need a second section, which does not have the ssl requirement inside it. Is that right? If so, how do I link one auth section to the imaps service, and the other to the imap service (listening only on localhost)? In other words, I want "ssl_require_client_cert = yes" for remote connections (on port 993), but "ssl_require_client_cert = no" for local connections using non-tls imap on port 143. Is this possible? Hope that late-night explanation makes sense, and hope somebody can point me in the right direction, thanks in advance! -- Bill Gallafent.

Hi, we found a serious bug while testing our migration scripts. in Solaris (or other system 5) the user variable is not always set. Dsync is not very happy about that and crashes with an segmentation fault. After hours of debugging and TWOE simple lines # USER=$LOGNAME # export USER the problem was solved! Hello, i am running dovevot 2.0.5 using ldap authentication with the allow_nets paramter to limit access to some local networks. The problem is, when i want to use the local lmtp socket from postfix *virtual_transport = lmtp:unix:private/dovecot-lmtp * i get the follwing error: *Oct 21 15:48:03 auth: Info: passdb(username): allow_nets check failed: Remote IP not known *When using the TCP socket with postfix *virtual_transport = lmtp:localhost:30025 *it is working. (i have 127.0.0.0/8 in the allow_nets list) Is there a way, other than using two different config sets to get this working together ? Hello, i have a setup with two director servers pointing to two backends. I don't care that much for load balancing, my main goal is high availability. En un principio, en los ldif que tenemos de los usuarios de prueba, tenemos el campo mailQuota. Sin embargo, si nos vamos a los schemas de qmail medianamente, con algo más de 3 años, se cambió mailQuota por mailQuotaSize y mailQuoatCount. Esto se debe entre otras cosas a que en la cabecera del fichero maildirsize del buzón, tenemos esta información, es decir, máximo tamaño ocupado y máximo número de mensajes. En el ldap de producción se sigue usando mailQuota? En el courier que tenemos montados aquí, misma versión y misma configuración que la existente en desbuz03, cuando no existe la quota del maildir directamente no da información sobre quota. ¿Estamos usando la quota de ldap? O al entregar un correo mediante Exim, se actualiza el fichero maildirsize con los valores de mailQuota. En este caso, podemos seguir con este comportamiento, o podemos utilizar la información que viene de ldap si no hay nada en el maildirsize.

Hi, I'm seeking advice to solve the following "mystery": I set up an IMAP server on Ubuntu 10.04 (dovecot 1.2.9). It appears to work fine apart from one problem. A colleague is running Outlook 2007 on Vista and sometimes (sometimes very often, sometimes only occasionally) when he wants to delete mails, Outlook hangs for some time (he says about 1, 2 or 3 minutes) until it finally puts out a message box: "The server did not respond to this IMAP command before the connection was terminated" I have activated the outlook-idle workaround, but I learned that this doesn't do anything anymore, right? There's no error message in dovecot's logs. Hi, I have setup postfix and dovecot and set dovecot as the LDA.my issue is that it accepts mails for non existing users and creates folders for them. Otherwise all mail delivery works fine. im using mysql for authentication. I do not see any error messages on my mail.log too. Thnks jay

[Dovecot] (Single instance) attachment storage with single-dbox

Just a note to myself and whoever else cares, should be added to wiki once it has its own page about this: With single-dbox messages can be copied with hard linking. This means that there can be multiple files that point to the same attachment file. The attachment is now deleted only once the mail file's link count drops to zero, so this works fine.. ..until someone goes and starts manually copying files or maybe restoring from backups or whatever, causing the hard links to be replaced with separate files having link count=1, even when there are other files pointing to the same attachment file. Now deleting this one mail will delete the attachment too early. I can't think of any other reasonable way to handle this though, so unless someon has some great ideas, I think the solution is to simply add enough warnings that message store shouldn't be accessed directly. Maybe add some import/export commands to doveadm which can be used to add a bunch of mails to storage without doing it directly on filesystem.

Thanks to Timo, I have solved all but one of my problems. For back ground, I am using Samba4 as an AD. I have the userdb working from LDAP just fine and kerberos authenetication for dovecot's IMAP server working fine. The problem is using dovecot's SASL with postfix. I also have plain/login working in imap and smtp. Both use pam_krb5 through pam to authenticate clients that don't have kerberos, and for now smtp. Hi, I've upgraded my Dovecot from 1.2 to 2.0.5. Everything is working fine on my Gentoo, also login with imaps and pop3s. But: I have in my config autocreate folders for new users. After creating a new user (with PostfixAdmin) I see in my logfile with SSL enabled this: imap-login: Warning: SSL alert: where=0x4004, ret=560: fatal unknown CA [127.0.0.1] With SSL-disable, autocreation folders for new users is no problem. I've searched a fiew days for a solution, but I did not find anything. Also dovecot-page what describes running SSL does not help me. [Dovecot] Backup recovery with mdbox

Hello I'm using mdbox for mail storage. I'd like to give users an option to recover backups into a new folder, say, Backup-$date. Is there a simple way to do this? I was looking at tools like dsync and doveadm-altmove but apparently they're not intended for this kind of stuff. Thanks in advance, Andre

Hi, pigeonhole/sieve check against dovecot's version comparing to what they have been built against. This means that whenever there is a minor version of dovecot released pigeonhole/sieve need to be rebuilt and then redistributed to users even if there is no need for it (I'm thinking of packaged versions of dovecot and dovecot-pigeonhole). Could the checks become ABI-version aware, so that rebuilds and redistribution are kept to a minimum? Timo, I'm working with a webmail client that periodically polls unread message counts for a list of folders. It currently does this by doing a LIST or LSUB and then iterating across all of the folders, running a SEARCH ALL UNSEEN, and counting the resulting UID list. Eventually I'd like to see it using RFC5819 LIST-EXTENDED, but that requires a fair bit of work. In the mean time I'm trying to speed up the existing iteration. I've got it working using 'STATUS "mailbox" (UNSEEN)', but the language in RFC3501 suggest that this may be slow. There is a counterproposal to use RFC4731 ESEARCH and do 'SELECT "MAILBOX"'; 'SEARCH RETURN (COUNT) UNSEEN'. >From an IMAP server perspective, which do you anticipate would be faster? >From a client perspective it seems like STATUS would be better since it involves less round-trips to the server and less output parsing, but given the warnings in the RFCs there is concern that it is in fact be more expensive. -Brad

If dovecot has tcpwrapper support and is compiled -DTCPWRAP then it can run as a standalone daemon and will consult the hosts.allow/deny files, no need for inetd of any type. man 3 hosts_access man 5 hosts_access for details on tuning. Tcpwrapper tuning is far more powerful than people realise.

[Dovecot] strange behavior with virtual accounts and imap

hi, I've recently setup new mailserver with dovecot and postfix. They use mysql and virtual accounts. All works perfectly except.. There is one group account named info, all the mail is forwarded to every other account. Users download their mail via Outlook (2003, 2007) with imap. If someone downloads email send to info and delete it after that. Outlook stoke the message and doesn't delete it immediately, thats normal. But if later someone else downloads his mail and it have received the same letter to info. The message appear as if it's already deleted by that user. But is supposed to be unreaded. I cant find any info why is this happening. Please help

Hi! I'm trying to set up SQL based dict quota. The quota is working, gets updated but I had to configure really loose file permission to make it work: dovecot.conf: dict { quota = pgsql:/etc/dovecot/dovecot_dict-sql.conf } service dict { unix_listener dict { mode = 0660 group = vmail # sidenote: I noticed that writing the number equivalent # of 'vmail' here does not work. Why? } } # ~ls -la /etc/dovecot/dovecot_dict-sql.conf -rw-r----- root vmail dovecot_dict-sql.conf # ~ls -la /var/dovecot/dict srw-rw---- root vmail /var/dovecot/dict= Every virtual user lookup returns a 'gid' field, and it is always 'vmail' (actually it is the number equivalent of 'vmail'). Despite that the imap process should run as the 'uid' and 'gid' values returned from the userdb, it can not read the dict config file: dovecot.log: dict: Error: Can't open configuration file /etc/dovecot/dovecot_dict-sql.conf: Permission denied dict: Error: Failed to initialize dictionary 'quota' lda(<username>): Error: read(/var/dovecot//dict) failed: Remote disconnected Now I must set o+r to the config file, which I really don't want to, given that it contains the db username and password. Strange thing is that the group r/w permission is enough for the dict= socket, and it doesn't need world-wide permissions at all. Hello, I've some trouble with my kmail (Version 1.13.5 / KDE 4.5.1, Kubuntu 10.04 and a dovecot-imap-server on debian etch (dovecot 1.0.rc15-2etch5). Everytime I try to create a folder under my imap-inbox, I get an error like "can't upload folder...", but after this message I can see a new folder under my inbox-folder, but I can't use it ... With a thundermail-client I can create a subfolder without any erro and I can use it r (but only first level). Feeling greatly daring, I just tried compiling from the Mercurial source. Hi, I'm trying to get old mail from /var/mail/<user>, where <user> is the (sometimes) huge mailfile, not a directory, converted to the maildir INBOX in ~/Maildir. Users have no ~/mail directory; they were supposed to use pop3 only. I'm trying the example from the wiki: plugin { convert_mail = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%n } but have still not succeded. I tried /var/mail/<user> where <user> is a file and /var/mail/<user>/<user> where user is first a diredtory en the second <user> a file. I also used the filename 'inbox', since the logging suggested that to me. Other logging seems to indicate that the right maildir++ info is composed. I'm in vor any advise! [Dovecot] Weird glitches with public folders - Dovecot not using per-user INDEX?

Hi I have this public folder: namespace { location = maildir:/home/_shared/projects:INDEX=~/Maildir/_shared prefix = shared. separator = . subscriptions = no type = public } Access is controlled by ACLs, everyone who has access is 'lrwstipek' except for some people who also have 'xa' privileges. As you can see it is set to put its index to the user's Maildir so they can have per-user \Seen flags. And that is the case -- most of the time anyway. But for some folders, and I can't figure out why those, they just don't work: if someone sets a message read it immediately becomes read for everyone else, too, and vice versa if someone marks a message unread, it becomes unread everywhere. Further investigation shows that in these problematic folders, indeed all users directly manipulate the flag of the email (i.e. X marks email Z read, ",S" appears immediatelly in the filename). Anyone knows what I'm doing wrong? I can't seem to find anything different with these problematic folders, ACLs look right etc. Thanks in advance, Tamas

I have modified my delivery agent to deposit files in my Maildir already containing custom flags. For example, x is appended for files that are sent from local users, y is for e-mails from Contacts and z is for e-mails from Whitelisted sources. A file will thus be delivered in the Maildir and be called something like: filename:2,yz Also in the Maildir I created a file called dovecot-keywords and have added these 3 flags in there as so: #cat dovecot-keywords 23 Local 24 InContacts 25 Whitelisted I went ahead and erased all the dovecot-uid* dovecot.index* files but Dovecot won't recognize the flags - furthermore, it labels z as 'unknown-25'! - for both old messages or new messages. First time I've seen this with dovecot-2.0.5. [Dovecot] Limit access to dovecot by domains?

Hi. Is there any way to limit access to dovecot by domains. I only need to give access to a well known set of domains, all from Australia and all networks are known and used either from people at home or mobile access (phones, laptops etc). iptables is not possible as e.g. OPTUS does not give away all of the networks mobile phones are connected to. I know some, but not all. It would be much nicer and easier to allow optusnet.com.au bigpond.com.au tpg.com.au and I have given 100% of our users access. I know there is an extra field called "allow_nets", I tried this and failed. I did a search and found that this only works with SQL? Maybe I could include a script that would check the reverse DNS record of a connected IP and then I could filter????? I do not have sfu or rfc2xxx enabled as this requires changing things with Samba 4 that I would rather avoid at the moment. Hello, I'm having a "path" problem with master users. When logged on as a master user, I can't see the user's folders. I'm trying to use system users as master users, so I'm using something like this: # Master password auth_master_user_separator = * passdb { driver = passwd master = yes pass = yes } # System users passdb { driver = passwd } # Virtualusers users passdb { driver = passwd-file args = username_format=%n /etc/virtual/%d/passwd } mail_location = mdbox:~/mdbox System and virtual users see their folders fine, including the shared namespaces, but as a master user, I see an empty mailbox. I've turned on debugging and watched things like root= and fs= and they're normal. Permissions should be OK since the system user has the same uid:gid as the virtual user. What could it be? Hi to all! I’m trying to understand the usage of "doveadm mailbox create”. If I do, as root: # doveadm mailbox create -u __public__ sys/test doveadm(__public__): Error: Can't create mailbox sys/test: Permission denied but if I do: # doveadm mailbox create -u __public__ test every thing is OK. “sys" is a shared maildir folder, that is visible in the client as "#Public/sys”. __public__ is the user that owns Public folders, here is the complete details: userdb: __public__ uid : 10002 gid : 8 home : /var/mail/domainname/__public__ mail : maildir:~/maildir:INBOX=~/maildir/INBOX:LAYOUT=fs:INDEX=~/indexes/ Do I have to add root with proper permissions to ACL? Hi, I'm trying to convert mailboxes from mbox zu mdbox. [Dovecot] Dovecot chgrp actions on new files/folders

Timo, I did further study of the user/group permissions. Applying the below patch will make no difference to virtually everyone out there. Those that have default uid/gid ownership won't see any change as the gid already matches so the fchown() action won't be attempted. Those that have sgid will still see the normal expected fchown() enforced by the kernel which becomes a duplicated action by dovecot. In the last case, those with an unknown 3rd party gid were used to seeing fchown() failures and those will now go away. It is only this third group that will see anything change as all other cases are already handled. Anyone who wishes to create new files with another group ID should make their directories sgid or stgid as per normal filesystem ACL semantics. The original net effect of this only turns on an fchown() that will fail and emit numerous error messages. This patch fixes that. Technically the fchown is unneccessary extra code already since any directory that is sgid or stgid will have ownership enforced by the kernel already. [Dovecot] lazy_expunge and moving messages

Hello, testing the lazy_expunge plugin (with 2.0.5), I realized the following effect, which users may not expect/understand: As moving messages from one folder to another has to be done by clients with the IMAP command sequence COPY STORE EXPUNGE, every moved message is also put into the "shadow folder" of the source folder. Maybe it's possible to extend the plugin to optionally hook into the COPY operation, remember it somewhere with the message (simply as special/ configurable IMAP flag?), and then really expunge messages with this flag set. What do you think? I haven't looked into the plugin interface yet. Of course, if a user manually copies a message and deletes the source message later (maybe having the copy deleted inbetween...), the consequence may not be expected either... [Dovecot] limits to serve sure a number of users

Hi, lets say dovcot should serve 1000 user (only imaps) without rejecting a users connection because of to short resources. With version 1.x I had to increase login_max_processes_count = ... With 2.x I'm not sure which parameters I have to set. So Thunderbird 3.x has a default value of 5 connections to cache. "dovadm who" shows quite often 5 connections: userx 5 imap (11154 11152 11158 11156 11150) ... So dovecot has to be configured for 5000 connections/imap-login's? Within 10-master.conf these defaults are shown #default_process_limit = 100 #default_client_limit = 1000 Is it right process_limit is not generally a problem because oldest imap-login process(?) will be closed? (With this expected number of users this value should be increased too.) But what about client_limit? Does it has to be increased to 5000? Hello, I have a question about userdb lookup when using expire-tool. Dovecot version 1.2.15 In dovecot.conf, mail_location = maildir:/var/mail/%u:INDEX=/var/indexes/%u I run dovecot expire-tool, target user's directory becomes executing user's one. According to wiki, userdb setting overrides mail_location. userdb passwd { mail=maildir:/var/mail/%u:INDEX=/var/indexes/%u } With this setting, it seems working. But, there are no examples with ":INDEX=.." setting. Is this syntax right? Regards

[Dovecot] Dovecot 2.0 lock upgrade assertion failure

Hi! I've now seen this assertion failure from lmtp (most frequent), pop3 (next frequent), and imap (rarely). It didn't start happening until the number of accounts on the server was increased into the 10k-25k range. It happens when index->file_lock is a read lock and mail_index_lock is called asking for a write lock. Dovecot 2.x dies at the assertion on line 62 of mail-index-lock.c If that assertion were removed, it would likely die at the assertion on line 80. Looking at the mail-index-lock.c from dovecot 1.2.15, it looks like the 1.2 series would enter the else case of the "kind of kludgy" block, and end up calling file_lock_try_update(), which seems like what needs to happen. [Dovecot] managesieve fileinto folder with international characters

I have a folder created in dovecot entered by the user as "ññoéé" On the file system it appears as "&APEA8Q-o&AOkA6Q-" (mUTF7) When creating a sieve rule, to file into the folder ññoéé, I am converting the name from UTF8 into UTF7, the rule becomes require ["fileinto"]; if header :contains ["From"] "user(a)domain.com" { fileinto "&APEA8Q-o&AOkA6Q-"; } however when executed, a sieve log is generated saying: failed to store into mailbox '&APEA8Q-o&AOkA6Q-' (&-APEA8Q-o&-AOkA6Q-): Mailbox doesn't exist: &-APEA8Q-o&-AOkA6Q-. If I directly modify the sieve file and place the actual utf8 version of the folder in it require ["fileinto"]; if header :contains ["From"] "user(a)domain.com" { fileinto "ññoéé"; } I get the following error: main_script: line 1: error: folder name specified for fileinto command is not utf-8: ññoéé.
