[Dovecot] Reverting from 2.0. to 1.2

Hello Timo, I switched this morning from dovecot-1.2.12 to 2.0.8 with a basic setup (high performance login mode, Maildir, everyhing on NFS, one shared but unused namespace). No problem so far except that some Thunderbird users who wouldn't succeed in moving messages from some one folder to another. They'd get a message about some illegal character in the mailboxname (already existing mailbox of course). This is user input so I don't have any details nor sufficient element to consider it a real problem. A Thunderbird restart seems to solve the problem. My questions were : . is there a different handling in the hierarchy separator (internal or advertized for the namespace) ? (I use "/" for both namespaces and "." since in Maildir). . is there a different handling in the non-ASCII mailbox names ? Could it be related ? . if something goes really wrong, is it safe to revert to 1.2.12 ? Maybe some files has non-compatible format (dovecot-uidlist, indexes, ...) ? Hello, I'm customizing squirrelmail and I want to print a line from the message in front of the subject in mailbox listing (like gmail). the problem is, when I use 'FETCH {SOME_ID} BODY[]' the message gets marked as seen. How can I fetch without setting the senn flag ? Thanks Behrooz

[Dovecot] over quota issue

I have a situation where if a user is over quota and sending through postfix I get an error, now this error only happens if the user is over quota, otherwise it works with no problem. However if sending using /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/dovecot-lda it works every time even if overquota, any ideas? I just can't seem to figure this one out. I have a Windoze-only client who wants to move their mail hosting from godaddy.com hosting to an in-house system. I'm pitching Linux as an alternative to Exchange, and trying to set up a demonstration system for them. While a long-time Linux user, my server admin experience has been in setting up front-ends (mostly Apache-based web interfaces) for the embedded systems I specialize in. The goal is to have an IMAP server where the users don't have Linux IDs, and only need to manually login to the Active Directory domain controller. The client has multiple Internet domains, but all users are in the same Active Directory realm internally. With the help of the how-tos at linuxmail.info, I got the system to the point of being able to authenticate logins for both IMAP and SMTP (usng dovecot-SASL). I tried using PAM first, but it didn't work: running kinit from the command line takes over 90 seconds to get a ticket, and Dovecot timed out after 60 on every login attempt. So I switched to LDAP. Note: I still don't understand why, but authentication through Active Directory didn't work until I changed the querying distinguished name from the "cn=,dc=,dc=" format to "user(a)xxxx.local" format. I have Postfix using dovecot-deliver as the LDA, but I hit a snag: deliver is not putting the domain name in the path to the maildir. [Dovecot] Is this really a user agent issue?

I suspect this is a user agent issue, given that Evolution is flaky in so many areas. When I deliver mail to a subfolder/subbox (e.g. the -m option in the deliver command), and Evolution doesn't know of it, yet, creating it fails, and Evolution still can't get to it. Doing things the other way around (create it in Evolution first, then deliver to it) works fine. Seems to be silliness to me. Just wondered if any Dovecot aspects might be involved ... such as the fact that the case is different (e.g. "INBOX" in the filesystem, but "Inbox" in Evolution). -- sHiFt HaPpEnS!

[Dovecot] How to get a working dovecot.conf?

Hi, I installed openSUSE 11.3 server version, and followed the guidelines from: http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-server-opensuse-11.3-x86_64-ispconfig-3 Everything works, accept loggin into dovecot. For many days i tried to get logged into dovecot, from localhost, from other pc in the lan, from squirrelmail, not possible. I read manuals on http://wiki.dovecot.org/ and tried to set the passwd db like: auth default { .. passdb passwd-file { args = /etc/passwd.dovecot } .. The "args" were not accepted according to the output from dovecot -n As now i installed dovecot 20, with a fresh dovecot.conf. Ofcourse this was not working, so i 'updated' ISPConfig. Hello! Got a panic&assertion failed with LMTP proxy. Target Dovecot LMTP server hanged and Dovecot LMTP proxy server started logging panics/assertions. Hello When I use my iphone to read my emails through IMAP I can see ALL folders that are in my email home directory not only those are listed in the .subscriptions file ... This should be a real security problem Anyone have the same problem ? Thanks

[Dovecot] director in large(ish) environments

Hey all, just wondering who here is running the director service in a larger environment. I just switched our whole production setup to the director and am quite pleased with the result. We're doing a peak of about 25000 tot 30000 concurrent sessions on 3 servers. But ive shut 1 server down a couple of days ago to see what would happen and 2 servers carried the load easily. (16 CPU, 24GB memory servers). If others are using the director on larger setups maybe we can all post when things do or dont work well. Now to see if the solution is better than the problem :) Cor

[Dovecot] Migrate from Maildir to mdbox

Looking at http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Migration/MailFormat, I do not see much on how to do a migration from Maildir to mdbox. That page isn't quite updated it looks. I have several domains (virtual) with the following storage layout: /var/spool/virtual/$domain. So the users have their mail stored as follows: /var/spool/virtual/domain1/$user/Maildir /var/spool/virtual/domain2/$user/Maildir /var/spool/virtual/domain3/$user/Maildir /var/spool/virtual/domainN/$user/Maildir >From the wiki, I am told the steps to take are: 1. Set mail_location=mdbox:~/mdbox 2. Run "doveadm mirror -u username maildir:~/Maildir" The instruction above confuses me because in my situation, I don't have a "username" per se. dovecot-deliver knows how to figure out my usernames and their mail_location settings. How do I derive my "username" when users are virtual, stored in MySQL back end? Again, the right command seems to rely on dsync, not "doveadm mirror". I could manually get all the values for the users for each domain and run: dysnc -u $u -o "mail_location=maildir:/var/spool/virtual/domain1/$u/Maildir" mirror "mdbox:/var/spool/virtual/domain1/$u/mdbox" This is so manual, especially because I have to (if I remember well) create /var/spool/virtual/domain1/$u/mdbox (and have the permissions right) before running dysnc. I really could use some help. I have been using dovecot and qmail on Debian for years with no problems. I just replaced qmail with Postfix and have not been able to get messages to dovecot via deliver. I have tried to set it up as a virtual mailbox only "no lookup necessary" system following the vaious help pages. I am using just a single user vmail:mail to execute postfix and deliver. I'm using dovecot 2.0 as proxy to make easy the migration from Courier to Dovecot. ¿Is it possible to use doveadm kick on a proxy connection? [Dovecot] Status update

Just in case you're wondering: I should hopefully soon get back to answering all the pending mails and start coding. I moved back to Finland a week ago. I should get my proper internet connection on Wednesday, although this 3.5G isn't too bad either. I couldn't get my old Mac Mini to work properly anymore so I went and bought a new machine. Dovecot recompiles in 43 seconds now. :)

I forgot the answer for this: in http://wiki.dovecot.org/AuthDatabase/PasswdFile, we have the passwd file defined as user:password:uid:gid:(gecos):home:(shell):extra_fields What should the uid and gid be associated with? In my setup I told postfix to use Dovecot LDA's deliver, which then is saving files as uid:gid of 1500:1500. How would that affect the uid:gid used in the passwd file? From what I read in the dovecot's wiki, you want them *not* to be anything that has the rights to access the emails. So, does that mean any value for them will do?

[Dovecot] Maildir feature I'd like to see - SSD for newer messages

SSD drives are very fast but expensive. So I have a crude idea that I'd like to see. May not be practical but would like to get some thoughts on it. Some new SSDs use SATA 3 (6gb/sec) with 355/mb/sec read speeds and 215MB/sec write. Put these in raid 0 and it screams! Can you imagine how fast that would be? What would be nice is if new email were on faster drives with old email being migrated to larger mechanical cheaper storage. Perhaps messages over a month old? From dovecot's perspective it would sort of all look the same but maybe one a week a script would run migrating older messages to slower media. It would also make backups easier. The faster newer messages could be archived hourly. On the weekend after the archiving script was run the older message could be backed up once a week. I'm not sure what it would take to make dovecot seamlessly access email from two different locations or if this is practical. Just wanted to throw the idea out there to see if something sticks.

This is my first post to this list/gmane newsgroup, so please be gentle with me.... :-) Here's my situation: I have a user (the "main boss secretary") who uses MS Outlook 2007 as her email client. She has over 46,000 messages in her inbox, with nobody knows how many more in 75+ different folders & subfolders. Surprisingly, her response time wasn't too terrible up until we had to reboot our mail server the other day (actually, restoring the entire server from a backup). Now it takes anywhere from 10 to 60 seconds for her to switch from 1 folder to another. Details: * Server is Debian running Postfix and Dovecot (both the current release). Using Maildir format stored in the user's ~/Maildir folder. * User connects to server via Imaps. Connection is local using gigabit network (ie. it ain't the network). * Yes, we did all the things on the Outlook side -thinking that is where the problem lays. Rebuild the .pst file, had Outlook re-index, compacted the .pst file, etc. So now I'm thinking that maybe I need to just wipe out all of the ~/Mailder/dovecot* files (including all those in sub-directories) and let it all reindex. Which begets 3 questions: (1) will this help? (2) anyone have a shell script that will remove all those dovecot* files from the user's directory AND all the sub-directories? (3) Any other suggestions I might be missing? -- Chris Barnes

I have a mail server with postfix, dovecot (1.2.15) and deliver lda (dovecot) with 350 users. I have the problem that in this christmas the employees are sending some big files (mainly powerpoints files) to a lot of recipients, because of that the server get a lot of charge (is a Xeon quad core 5405 with 4GB of Ram), i have four disks in Raid 5 configuration (HP E200 controller, not very fast) Is there any option to limit this type of delivery, the total size of the mails delivered to each user (total recipients * size of mail), in dovecot deliver. I don't want to limit the concurrent delivery more lower than 350 recipients and the max size of the mail we can send is 15M. Thanks a lot, -- Andrés Fernando Yacopino

[Dovecot] trying to make cmusieve happen globally

In Dovecot 1.1.11 cmusieve is apparently integrated in the Ubuntu 9.10 package "dovecot-common" since the files are there. I am wanting to right now just do a very basic test of the setup to see how it runs before doing more sophisticated steps that could obscure any errors or bugs (e.g. unit testing). So I took the following example sieve script from the wiki1 documentation: require "fileinto"; if header :contains "X-Spam-Flag" "YES" { fileinto "spam"; } and recoded it to skip the test and just always do the fileinto step like so: require "fileinto"; fileinto "spamtest"; Then I configured my dovecot.conf file (via dovecot-postfix.conf it really points to) by setting: protocol lda { ... mail_plugins = cmusieve mail_plugin_dir = /usr/lib/dovecot/modules/lda ... } and: plugin { sieve_global_path = /etc/dovecot/sieve-global.d/spam.sieve } I manually compiled /etc/dovecot/sieve-global.d/spam.sieve so there also exists /etc/dovecot/sieve-global.d/spam.sievec in the same directory. Then I restarted both Dovecot and Postfix. Mail is being delivered, but still only to the same place it always has. The filesystem shows these sieve files are not being accessed at all. I've read documents http://wiki1.dovecot.org/LDA/Sieve and http://wiki1.dovecot.org/LDA/Sieve/CMU to come up with this. But it just doesn't seem to be happening. So I guess it is a good thing I've broken my testing down into smaller units. Anything standout that I misinterpreted about the documentation? If not, I can post the whole config files (in case there is a conflict with something else I have done). FYI, I'm only trying to do a global sieve, not per-user sieve scripts. The Tbird add-on as protocol logging facility, so you could check that to find out where it hangs exactly. Unfortunately, such issues are notoriously hard to debug when the problems don't occur consistently. I'm hoping Timo can provide some additional insight on this. Hi, I'm trying to setup a system with dovecot to remove the old courier one, and everything (pop3, imap, lmtp, quotas) but managesieve is working fine. It seems like it's a problem with each user having a separate uid, because I have a working similar setup with a single uid working without problems. [Dovecot] Restarting dovecot-auth stops authentication

Hi, The Dovecot wiki states that Dovecot's master restarts all died processes, which is good for availability. [Dovecot] Moving email between folders outside of IMAP context

I'd like to run a script from cron that will scan certain mailboxes and move selected mail from one folder (usually INBOX) to another folder. The basic idea is to move previously detected spam based on headers prepended to the mail. Since I am not able to figure out how to get Postfix to invoke deliver with the -m option in these cases, and not in others, this is one idea I have come up with to deal with it. The big (hopefully obvious) complication seems to be getting the indexes updated. Is there a way to move mail this way AND then have the indexes updated to reflect that move (maybe even if regenerating the entire index all over again)? -- sHiFt HaPpEnS!

[Dovecot] Maildir and Solaris UFS acls

I have a centrally located shared imap folder location. We have several maildir folders with different file system permissions. They are for several groups of people who are loosely related for support purposes. All mail gets delivered to queue1 just fine. The files are group writable by group1. Some of the mail gets moved via imap to queue2. Queue2's maildir tree is configured with Solaris UFS acls such that any new files are read/write by group1 or group2. If a new file is created within queue2 anywhere, it has the correct permissions. However, if a message is moved from queue1 to queue2, it retains the permissions that it had within queue1. This is what happens if I use 'mv' within the file system, btw. Is there any way to configure dovecot such that if a person moves or copies a message to another imap folder, it creates a new file instead of doing a link or mv or whatever? If not, no problem; I was just hoping for an elegant solution to my particular problem. :-) queue1 - read/write by group1 queue2 - read/write by group1 & group2 through solaris ACLs BTW, if any file whatsoever in queue2 is not readable by group2, those in group2 cannot read _anything_ in queue2. thanks Tom Lieuallen

Hi I seem to be getting an error when quotas are enabled. Also I noticed that the quota_ rule settings don't actually get used, the only settings that are used are on the sql.conf file. [Dovecot] Best way to move mail to an archive

Hello all...new to dovecot and this list. I have a question that may have been answered before, but I can't find anything yet that addresses it directly. I installed dovecot 2.0.8 (+postfix, fetchmail) on a small server to manage several e-mail accounts. I love this software! So, to back to the question: I'd like to archive e-mail as it ages into a single IMAP archive directory. Ideally, I would like to set up a cron job to search for e-mail in all of my imap directories that older that 'X' days and move it to the archive directory. I know that dovecot wants to manage e-mail movement thru the IMAP interface, so I'm leery of just using ordinary Linux commands to move mail around and bypass the IMAP protocol. Does anybody have any recommendations about dovecot/IMAP safe commands I could use to accomplish this task? Thanks in advance and I apologize for not being more knowledgeable about this subject. [Dovecot] Problem with expunge

I'm running Dovecot 2.0.8. The other day I tested doveadm expunge on a test Inbox with a few messages received over the course of a day, and using savedbefore <a few hours>, and it seemed to work. However, today I was testing converting some maildirs over to sdbox, and noticed odd behavior: it's deleting all messages in the specified folder instead of just the ones matching the condition I'm using ("savedbefore 4w"). The command I'm using is "doveadm -Dv expunge -A mailbox Trash savedbefore 4w" Because of the conversion, all of the ctimes for all of the files are actually the same (basically, a few minutes ago), due to the converstion to sdbox from maildir, so I would expect that either it doesn't delete any of them or looks inside at some header of the mail (half of which was received/placed into Trash before 4w ago and half of which wasn't). I definitely don't expect full-on deletion... Any idea what's going on? Thanks, Jeff

Hi, after deciding to use Dovecot 2.0.8 as a postfix LDA using mysql DB I'm running into some issues. I started to follow, http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/DovecotLDAPostfixAdminMySQL but noticed that the auth settings on the config changed, after looking through the dovecot wiki I think I have that issue fixed. However I still can't get the SQL part to work right, below is what I have on the conf.d/sql.conf and the error I get. service dovecot status doveconf: Fatal: Error in configuration file /usr/local/etc/dovecot/conf.d/sql.conf line 1: Unknown setting: password_query Where do I put the sql connect string, in the URL above that along with the driver type went on the sql.conf file but that is no longer the case. If anyone has a better reference/suggestions for what im trying to do I would appreciated it. LIST "" * * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "INBOX" * LIST (\Noselect \HasChildren) "/" "Shared/user(a)do.main" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "Shared/user(a)do.main/INBOX" * LIST (\HasChildren) "/" "Public" . OK List completed. . LIST "Shared/" * * LIST (\Noselect \HasChildren) "/" "Shared/user(a)do.main" . OK List completed. . LIST "Public/" * . OK List completed. With LIST "Shared/" the other users INBOX is missing, so with namespace capable clients like Thunderbird it is impossible to see or subscribe this folder. The "Public/" namespace has some subfolders, but only for other acl_groups and I don't have rights to access any of them. So the LIST "Public/" looks good. However, with LIST "" * it is shown without the trailing slash and with \HasChildren where it should be hidden. I cannot even re-start it: [root@dsmail /]# service dovecot start Starting Dovecot Imap: Can't open log file /var/log/dovecot.log: Permission denied If I create those manually (touch /var/log/dovecot.log, .../dovecot_info.log, .. dovecot_debug.log) service starts, but reports an error in dovecot.log: "Dec 16 14:55:30 master: Error: symlink(/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf, /var/run/dovecot/dovecot.conf) failed: Permission denied" and users still cannot login. Where do I start troubleshooting? Following: We've got a Dovecot 1.0.10 running on Ubuntu Hardy. Till now we used to have only mail accounts under our own domain, but since we're also a webhoster the people began to ask if there is a possibility to use there own Domains in there mail address. For addressing this we changed our Ldap Tree Structur: users which had been there befor remain in there old subtree, new accounts for Virtual Domains are located below an "vd=<domain>,ou=domains,..." subtree. The main Problem at this: old users are used to login only with their username and password, new users has to login via their complete mail address and their password. This is not going to change in the future so I tried to do this: Using two userdb/passdb - entries, in each case one for the old users and one for the new ones. If a user is not found through the first request the second is tried. If this failed too, the user gets rejected. The Problem with this: when not found during the first try the request logs an "authenticated user ot found" - message, no matter if trying via the second etry is successful. Is there a way to tell dovecot, that the user is not "not found" until __both__ requests failed? Regards Sebastian

[Dovecot] adding servers to director_mail_servers

Is there a specific order in which one has to add servers to director_mail_servers, Let's say I have 20 loadbalanced director servers (I dont, but for arguments sake). I want to add 5 servers to director_mail_servers. If I do this by restarting each director server 1 by 1 with an updated conf, it seems the 5 new servers dont get added. Or at least I dont get what makes it work eventually. Only after restarting a few times they seem to all want to agree on the new list of servers. Cor

Hello I solved my previous SSL problem by reinstalling dovecot2 ... :-) at FreeBSD 8.1 Now I'm using dovecot 2 , cool ... Actually my production mail server runs with MBOX format but reading the dovecot 2 wiki I read shared mailboxes are only working well with Maildir format. As I would like to setup some shared mailboxes, is it possible to have MBOX format for normal users ( UNIX NIS users ) and Maildir format for shared mailboxes to gain access to the per-user \Seen flag Or do I have to convert ALL my server to Maildir format ? Hi timo..... I Made a plugin that's works fine in a Normal Partition and a GlusterFS enviroment too. in NFS it's intermitent, some times works, some times don't. Only the expunge part have this issue, i use stat to get the amont of hard link in a file. There is because of that (stat, hard link count) ? If is, there is some workarround to do !? Tks Timo !!!

Hello, What the subject says. I am trying, that is. OK, here's the story. Users very lazy. Don't want to write down their contact details from scratch. Here's what I thought : migrate (export?) contacts from outlook to mozilla thunderbird. Then find a way to make thunderbird "talk" to dovecot, so that the latter can import the contact details from mozilla tb. Any ideas ? Will it work ? Hi, I can't find any references to this problem on 2.x. [Dovecot] question about snarf plugin in dovecot 2

I'm trying to get the snarf plugin working with dovecot 2.0.7. Specifically, I want to use the UW-IMAP style optional snarfing. I'm looking at the wiki2 documentation. The first question is whether the UW-IMAP optional snarfing will require any changes to the mail_location. The first section suggests (but doesn't specifically state, which I'd propose be clarified) that mail_location be updated to point at ~/mbox for INBOX. However, with the optional snarfing, sometimes inbox will be at /var/mail and for some users, it'll be ~/mbox. What, if anything, do I do to mail_location? Does it matter where (in which config file) the plugin block is placed? I put all of my snarf configuration in 10-mail.conf. It's not working; not snarfing and not reading mail from ~/mbox (how would it, I have yet to tell it to). [Dovecot] After-delivery sieve processing

Is it possible to run sieve against an existing mailbox? My application: I've got a mailbox that stores status messages from multiple sites. It's easier to check up on recent events by having them all in one folder. However, after I've read them, I'd like to have them archived to individual folders per site. I currently have a sieve script that uses "fileinto" to sort the mails - but I'm thinking of removing it from deliver if I can run it as a manual job later. I suppose another method would be to duplicate the mails on delivery into both the main folder and the per site folders, then delete after I've read them - but for whatever reason that strikes me as inelegant. -- Daniel

[Dovecot] Migration from UW-IMAP

I am attempting to test out dovecot on a server on a separate IP address from the live, functioning UW-IMAP. I am having mixed results with dovecot. An entirely new account that's never been used with UW-IMAP seems to work fine, but that's really not the point of the exercise. If I try changing over an existing account to use dovecot, I get a variety of issues. Testing with Apple Mail.app, if I synchronize the account, the INBOX stops displaying. So off to plan B, and debug via command line commands. I tried connecting to Dovecot. It was able to list the mailboxes for me. I asked for status on INBOX. Sometimes I get an error back in the IMAP stream, sometimes not. Either way, the log shows complaints about creating mail/.imap and below (we use mbox format, plus /var/mail/%u for inbox). I have active namespace compatibility recommended by the Wiki so that clients specifying "mail/" and clients not specifying an imap path both work. With the test account, I proved this functionality is working. At this point I clearly have some issues, and could use some help figuring out what to ask for help with, i.e. how to proceed to debug this without damaging the existing UW-IMAP setup in the process. The goal is to cut over to dovecot once I can be sure it really is working compatibly, but until then I have a large user base and can't blow everything up. And yes, I really, truly have RTFM (i.e. read the Wiki, the troubleshooting pages, the migration pages).

[Dovecot] Incorrect W value after filesystem corruption

Dec 14 00:15:54 vm dovecot: IMAP(####@####): Maildir filename has wrong W value: /var/vmail/#####/####/cur/#########.M###########.??.????.??.??,S=4951,W=5057:2,RSa Dear Dovecot elite, This morning I woke up to find my mail server hard disk controller had gone crazy and decided to corrupt my file system. After over eight passes with the fsck and a new machine I have mostly recovered but this being a personal server the backups were a half-job. So for speed I recovered the mail directly off the bad file system. Most of the data was fine but a few files were corrupt and as a result I have found Dovecot to be a real pain when it comes to handling a wrong W value. I am having to separately look at the mail.log and just systematically remove the W value as a quick work-around. But it seems to me that it would be much easier to have this done by Dovecot when it realises it has this wrong value, especially as Dovecot seems to drop the connection of that user after encountering this problem. Can I suggest as an improvement this scenario is handled better? I saw one posting which said "this should never happen" but clearly it can and I think there could be better handing of it perhaps? Hi all I have setup dovecot lda instead of maildrop on my courier server. Delivery is working, sieve plugin too, but i can't figure out why lda can't send emails via sendmail (vacation). I always get error Error: Sendmail process terminated abnormally, exit status 67 And i know why, but i don't know how to setup lda to make it work . Here is .courier file where is redirect to lda. | /usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver -a $RECIPIENT -f $SENDER But the deliver does not pass recipient address to sendmail. The two search options are From + To + Subject, or "entire messages", which puts together a large OR query: SRCH1069 SEARCH CHARSET UTF-8 OR (OR (OR FROM "waldo" TO "waldo") SUBJECT "waldo") BODY "waldo" I also checked to see whether the header fields are included in the FTS index but it didn't appear so. I'm trying to set up SMTP authentication on my server and am getting an authentication failed error. My client is set up to automatically select authentication method and tries CRAM_MD5. The http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/PostfixAndDovecotSASL suggests "passdb pam" and "userdb passwd" -- is it possible to configure sasl authentication using a dovecot.conf like http://pastebin.com/6JWE5jp1? Hello We are using dovecot 1.2.x. In our setup we will have 1200 concurrent imap users (maildirs) and we have 2xraid5 sas 15k diks mounted by iSCSI. The dovecot server (RHEL 5 x64) is a virtual machine in our vmware esx cluster. We want to minimize disk I/O, what config options should we use. We can "exchange" CPU & RAM to minimize disk i/o. Should we change to dovecot 2.0? Maybe mdbox can help us? Maybe ext4 instead of ext3? Any idea is welcome. Regards Javier

I got around to trying the 0.2.2 managesieve listener and it's not working for me. As soon as the client authenticates, the connection is closed and the following is logged on the server: > Dec 13 11:48:30 managesieve(xx(a)yy.com): Error: user xx(a)yy.com: Initialization failed: Namespace 'Mobile/': Unknown mail storage driver virtual > Dec 13 11:48:30 managesieve(xx(a)yy.com): Error: Invalid user settings. Refer to server log for more information. I do have such a virtual namespace defined in dovecot.conf, obviously, and it works fine with dovecot 2.0.8. Additionally, the sieve plugin is working fine for lda, dovecot's deliver is executing it perfectly. Do I need to add a setting or plugin to "protocol managesieve" for this? Combed the wiki to no avail.

I am hoping to use extra fields to migrate certain accounts in advance for testing, and I can't find info on setting up extra fields with the "passwd" backend. Is this possible, or will I have to use another approach?

Hello Timo, and all. Preface: From time to time we have problems with thunderbird. The problem is that mail client begin to sync users inbox (or other folder) and this process didn't stop. Last time we have this situation - our monitoring system shows unusual amount of imap traffic send to one of local hosts. This host was - terminal server and 20 users worked with their mailboxes that time. But normal 20 imap session can't fork that amount of traffic (5.2Gb). After measuring local thunderbird's cached mailboxes we find out that one user have local INBOX about 19Gb and size is rising. On server side - this mailbox was 89Mb. And after killing thunderbird in logs appear: Dec 10 17:35:53 IMAP(user@domain 192.168.2.92): Info: Disconnected: Logged out bytes=1133593/1175103 Dec 10 17:35:53 IMAP(user@domain 192.168.2.92): Info: Disconnected: Logged out bytes=15964/44364 Dec 10 17:35:53 IMAP(user@domain 192.168.2.92): Info: Disconnected: Logged out bytes=54758/944989 Dec 10 17:35:53 IMAP(user@domain 192.168.2.92): Info: Disconnected: Logged out bytes=6532/43930 Dec 10 17:35:53 IMAP(domain@domain 192.168.2.92): Info: Connection closed bytes=235408/4797272694 As you can see - 4.8Gb of data was send to this client - and who knows - what was that. So we have 5.2Gb send to host with 20 active sessions and 4.8Gb send to one user. Of course lifetime of this connection can be much more than last day, but problem disappeared after killing it. This is not single accident. But this one was hard to find out because of 20-25 users working at the same time from 1 server. So it will be great if dovecot has feature to limit the amount of data send per connection. For example: service imap { bytes_per_connection = 100Mb } And after limit reached - close connection and log warning. This will much simplify fights with sometimes become crazy imap clients. That do you think?

Hello everyone, I'm experimenting with the quota warning plugin. I have the following setting in Dovecot's general config: plugin { quota_warning = storage=75%% /var/www/contrib/doquotawarning.py 75 quota_warning2 = storage=90%% /var/www/contrib/doquotawarning.py 90 } The doquotawarning.py script is working okay -- meaning that the user gets a warning. My SQL backend uses the following query: user_query = \ SELECT m.maildir AS home, 1001 AS uid, 1001 AS gid, \ CONCAT('*:bytes=', m.quota, 'M') AS quota_rule, \ 'Trash:ignore' AS quota_rule2 \ FROM mailbox m \ INNER JOIN domain d \ ON d.id = m.domainid \ WHERE d.domain = '%d' \ AND m.user = '%n' Where m.quota is the user's personal quota (in MB). As you can see, we ignore the 'Trash' box, when considering the usage data. We are using the dict quota backend. Now this is what happens. Assume we have 'user(a)example.org', that has a quota of 10MB and he currently has 5MB in use. Now someone sends a 3MB email towards 'user(a)example.org'. Dovecot does indeed generate the warning message (75%), that arrives correctly 'together' with the 3MB email. Now the user moves the 3MB email to trash. This goes well, however: Dovecot generates the 75% warning message again. Which is not necessary: the user was cleaning his mailbox, i.e. usage is 5MB again. I have the feeling Dovecot is generating the warning event twice. When getting from e.g. 50% to 79% and when the usage is lowered from 87% to 70%. I have the feeling this is either not the correct behavior, or I'm misinformed. My dovecot logs revealed a crash in the dovecot/imap process a few days ago. It appears to have dereferenced 0x00000004 in the storage shared lib. Unfortunately, I didn't get a core and I'm not sure how to reproduce it. Dovecot 2.0.8 on linux32. Two questions: 1) How can I be sure I get a core next time? I think it's because I run dovecot/imap under a mail uid and didn't have write permission to the cwd. Any way to verify that was it, and be sure it works? 2) What other settings would provide more info if it happens again? Would it be ok to set director_user_expire to a very high value? Say 1 day? This would pretty much lock a user into a specific server right? What if I set it to 1 year? :) What happens when the server a user is locked into disappears (i remove it from the pool). Then a day later, I add the server again. I am using postfix + dovecot 2.0.6 + mailman And others 2 serves with only postfix and dovecot writing at same storage with OCFS2. We are having problens with IOwait, and still trying to figure out why that is happen! But, problem becomes much worse when some emails are used in mailman, when it happens all 3 serves became really slow. iowait goes to 80. Does anyone have an idea how to slow down the dovecot lda ? I want it to nit to iwrite so much email, at least take a small break between each mail!! Any ideias? Thanks! []'sf.rique

Is it possible to have dovecot 2.0.8 using LMTP run a shell script each time it delivers a message to a users mailbox? Hi, We've been running 1.2 Dovecot for a while and are happy with it. In trying to migrate from symlinks to shared folders I see a similar problem to that shown at http://www.mail-archive.com/dovecot@dovecot.org/msg32083.html . For example: . lsub "" "*" * LSUB () "." "Users..INBOX" The advice given in the thread is to upgrade to 2.0. We currently use Debian's 1.2 package and I'm reluctant to move since I can't find a stable 2.0 .deb (http://wiki2.dovecot.org/PrebuiltBinaries only has repository heads of 2.0). Building from source is an option but I'd really prefer to be using a package. Can anybody advise on an appropriate way to go? Like the original poster I am seeing INBOX under the shared namespace when I try to share. I'm also getting an empty /var/mail/virtual/users/Maildir created (maildir:/var/mail/virtual/users/%n/Maildir/). We formerly had an INBOX prefix namespace from a Courier migration too, but it has been deleted (to no avail). Shared folders do work, though. It just requires 'anyone l' in /etc/dovecot/dovecot-acls/.DEFAULT (though I'd really rather not do this!). Hello Dovecot users, The new Dovecot v2.0.8 release has a few changes that prompted changes in Pigeonhole as well. This means that a new release of Pigeonhole is also necessary, because otherwise things will not compile anymore. Apart from a few rather minor bugfixes, some of which originate in Dovecot, one TODO item has finally been resolved: the reject action uses the LDA mail reject API, meaning that the associated LDA settings now also work for Pigeonhole, as would be expected. Changelog v0.2.2: * LDA Sieve plugin: started using Dovecot LDA reject API for the reject extension. This means that the LDA reject_reason and reject_subject settings now also work for Pigeonhole's LDA Sieve plugin. * Did some work on the new sieve-filter tool. It is mostly functional, but it is not finished yet. * Dovecot change: services' default vsz_limits weren't being enforced correctly in earlier v2.0 releases. Now that they are enforced, you might notice that the default limits are too low and you need to increase them. This problem will show up in logs as "out of memory" errors. See default_vsz_limit and service { vsz_limit } settings. - Imap4flags: fixed segfault bug occurring in multiscript context. - Added version checking to the ManageSieve settings plugin. This plugin was forgotten when the LDA plugin was updated with this change in the previous release. - LDA Sieve plugin: fixed memory leak at deinitialization. Hello list, I'm looking into the possibility to setup dovecot to act as an IMAP proxy to an Exchange server. Things i know beforehand: - I will not be able to use the ldap (Active Directory) user DN for auth binds (but i discovered that i could could use the user userPrincipalName attribute as bind DN. I tested it using ldapsearch and it worked fine.) - I will not be able to perform any unbinded searches. - The Exchange server is unique, so i can setup a static proxy route to the server. Given the above, i'd like to post some questions: 1 - Will i be able to use auth_bind = yes given the restrictions? My first guess is that this might work if i use something like "auth_bind_userdn = %u(a)example.org" 2 - Will i be able to specify a static route to the exchange server, not having to rely on that information from the AD itself? Another thing i'd like to know is if NTLM auth can be used while dovecot acts only as proxy. I am running Dovecot 1.2.16 and considering moving up to 2.0.8. I have found <http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Upgrading/2.0> but there's not a lot about deploying a 2.0 server alongside an existing 1.2. Any hints on a seamless approach to this, especially one that might allow me to upgrade individual users in place, without moving their maildirs into a new tree and still avoid issues with 1.2/2.0 sharing access?

[Dovecot] How to handle "Waiting for authentication process..."

Sometimes, when dovecot authentication processes are busy, dovecot write reply "Waiting for authentication process to respond.." to client. Roundcube webmail do not understand it and invalidate user session. My question is what is a good practise to handle this situation by client software? One Roundcube user proposes to detect such response then wait a moment and try again. Is there any standard for this? How long should we wait? [Dovecot] local seen flags with shared mailboxes

Hello all, after recent upgrade from 2.0.5 to 2.0.8 it seems that local seen flags for mails reside in shared mailboxes doesn´t work anymore. Before the upgrade I had read mails with account #1. Account #2 (who has access via acl) saw the mails still as unread. Now, no matter who read the mails, the other account see the same flags, immediately. I read the related wiki pages again and tried to find any configuration error, unfortunately without much success. I´ve attached output from "doveconf -n" and a debug logfile. Thanks a lot! Tim

As I mentioned in another post, your log message clearly shows the IPv6 address is being used. And yes, your host obviously is capable of that. You don't need to specifically enable it with fetchmail. It will under certain circumstances default to IPv6, which in your case happened. As also mentioned, your postfix seems to not bind to the IPv6 address by default, though, or it has deliberately been disabled. Moreover, your router is not even in the picture here -- just like dovecot, FWIW. Fetchmail fetches the mail from a remote server, and tries to deliver it locally. That local delivery step is generating the log messages. A mail, sent from and to your box. Long after the data stream passed your router...
