Hi All, I try to install dovecot 2 in ubuntu, but when I try dsync on virtualbox "dsync -v -u it mirror it(a)10.32.1.3" it come out an error to me. dsync-local(it): Error: Can't rename mailbox INBOX_15a69e11bbd4014d09330000a5727609 to INBOX: Target mailbox already exists dsync-local(it): Error: Can't rename mailbox INBOX to INBOX_e67c001b52ca014d8f5c00001f237f90: Renaming INBOX isn't supported. May I know what is the problems on here? Hi, after setting up a new Dovecot server with shared and public namespaces, both with hidden=no and list=children, I see some inconsistency in the folder listing. . NAMESPACE * NAMESPACE (("" "/")) (("Shared/" "/")) (("Public/" "/")) . OK Namespace completed. . LIST "" * * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "INBOX" * LIST (\Noselect \HasChildren) "/" "Shared/user(a)do.main" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "Shared/user(a)do.main/INBOX" * LIST (\HasChildren) "/" "Public" . OK List completed. . LIST "Shared/" * * LIST (\Noselect \HasChildren) "/" "Shared/user(a)do.main" . OK List completed. . LIST "Public/" * . OK List completed. With LIST "Shared/" the other users INBOX is missing, so with namespace capable clients like Thunderbird it is impossible to see or subscribe this folder. The "Public/" namespace has some subfolders, but only for other acl_groups and I don't have rights to access any of them. So the LIST "Public/" looks good. However, with LIST "" * it is shown without the trailing slash and with \HasChildren where it should be hidden. After several trouble free months and without any obvious reason our server just stopped working. I cannot even re-start it: [root@dsmail /]# service dovecot start Starting Dovecot Imap: Can't open log file /var/log/dovecot.log: Permission denied If I create those manually (touch /var/log/dovecot.log, .../dovecot_info.log, .. dovecot_debug.log) service starts, but reports an error in dovecot.log: "Dec 16 14:55:30 master: Error: symlink(/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf, /var/run/dovecot/dovecot.conf) failed: Permission denied" and users still cannot login. Where do I start troubleshooting? I upgraded most of our servers from 1.2.x to 2.0.8 and am noticing a really big increase in server load. This is across the board, not any specific server. [Dovecot] How to avoid "authenticated user not found" - messages when using multiple Ldap userdbs/passdbs?

Following: We've got a Dovecot 1.0.10 running on Ubuntu Hardy. Till now we used to have only mail accounts under our own domain, but since we're also a webhoster the people began to ask if there is a possibility to use there own Domains in there mail address. For addressing this we changed our Ldap Tree Structur: users which had been there befor remain in there old subtree, new accounts for Virtual Domains are located below an "vd=<domain>,ou=domains,..." subtree. The main Problem at this: old users are used to login only with their username and password, new users has to login via their complete mail address and their password. This is not going to change in the future so I tried to do this: Using two userdb/passdb - entries, in each case one for the old users and one for the new ones. If a user is not found through the first request the second is tried. If this failed too, the user gets rejected. The Problem with this: when not found during the first try the request logs an "authenticated user ot found" - message, no matter if trying via the second etry is successful. Is there a way to tell dovecot, that the user is not "not found" until __both__ requests failed? Regards Sebastian

Hi, I try to upgrade my dovecot server to the 2.x branch. But i have a big problem with the mailbox which are over quota. [Dovecot] adding servers to director_mail_servers

Is there a specific order in which one has to add servers to director_mail_servers, Let's say I have 20 loadbalanced director servers (I dont, but for arguments sake). I want to add 5 servers to director_mail_servers. If I do this by restarting each director server 1 by 1 with an updated conf, it seems the 5 new servers dont get added. Or at least I dont get what makes it work eventually. Only after restarting a few times they seem to all want to agree on the new list of servers. Cor

Hello I solved my previous SSL problem by reinstalling dovecot2 ... :-) at FreeBSD 8.1 Now I'm using dovecot 2 , cool ... Actually my production mail server runs with MBOX format but reading the dovecot 2 wiki I read shared mailboxes are only working well with Maildir format. As I would like to setup some shared mailboxes, is it possible to have MBOX format for normal users ( UNIX NIS users ) and Maildir format for shared mailboxes to gain access to the per-user \Seen flag Or do I have to convert ALL my server to Maildir format ? [Dovecot] Plugins on a NFS

Hi timo..... I Made a plugin that's works fine in a Normal Partition and a GlusterFS enviroment too. in NFS it's intermitent, some times works, some times don't. Only the expunge part have this issue, i use stat to get the amont of hard link in a file. There is because of that (stat, hard link count) ? If is, there is some workarround to do !? Tks Timo !!!

Hello, What the subject says. I am trying, that is. OK, here's the story. Users very lazy. Don't want to write down their contact details from scratch. Here's what I thought : migrate (export?) contacts from outlook to mozilla thunderbird. Then find a way to make thunderbird "talk" to dovecot, so that the latter can import the contact details from mozilla tb. Any ideas ? Will it work ? Hello, upgrade Dovecot from v1.2.10 to v2.0.8, after build a new configuration file following instructions of http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Upgrading/2.0 run dovecot I get this: auth: Error: Fatal: Dovecot version mismatch: Master is v2.0.8, dovecot-auth is v1.2.10 (if you don't care, set version_ignore=yes) log: Error: service(auth): child 3389 returned error 89 (Fatal failure) master: Error: service(auth): command startup failed, throttling Did any SSL configuration is missing? I am currently authenticating with dovecot and postfix. Any knows , how could i solved this problem? Thanks.

Hi, I can't find any references to this problem on 2.x. [Dovecot] question about snarf plugin in dovecot 2

I'm trying to get the snarf plugin working with dovecot 2.0.7. Specifically, I want to use the UW-IMAP style optional snarfing. I'm looking at the wiki2 documentation. The first question is whether the UW-IMAP optional snarfing will require any changes to the mail_location. The first section suggests (but doesn't specifically state, which I'd propose be clarified) that mail_location be updated to point at ~/mbox for INBOX. However, with the optional snarfing, sometimes inbox will be at /var/mail and for some users, it'll be ~/mbox. What, if anything, do I do to mail_location? Does it matter where (in which config file) the plugin block is placed? I put all of my snarf configuration in 10-mail.conf. It's not working; not snarfing and not reading mail from ~/mbox (how would it, I have yet to tell it to). [Dovecot] After-delivery sieve processing

Is it possible to run sieve against an existing mailbox? My application: I've got a mailbox that stores status messages from multiple sites. It's easier to check up on recent events by having them all in one folder. However, after I've read them, I'd like to have them archived to individual folders per site. I currently have a sieve script that uses "fileinto" to sort the mails - but I'm thinking of removing it from deliver if I can run it as a manual job later. I suppose another method would be to duplicate the mails on delivery into both the main folder and the per site folders, then delete after I've read them - but for whatever reason that strikes me as inelegant. -- Daniel

[Dovecot] Migration from UW-IMAP

I am attempting to test out dovecot on a server on a separate IP address from the live, functioning UW-IMAP. I am having mixed results with dovecot. An entirely new account that's never been used with UW-IMAP seems to work fine, but that's really not the point of the exercise. If I try changing over an existing account to use dovecot, I get a variety of issues. Testing with Apple Mail.app, if I synchronize the account, the INBOX stops displaying. So off to plan B, and debug via command line commands. I tried connecting to Dovecot. It was able to list the mailboxes for me. I asked for status on INBOX. Sometimes I get an error back in the IMAP stream, sometimes not. Either way, the log shows complaints about creating mail/.imap and below (we use mbox format, plus /var/mail/%u for inbox). I have active namespace compatibility recommended by the Wiki so that clients specifying "mail/" and clients not specifying an imap path both work. With the test account, I proved this functionality is working. At this point I clearly have some issues, and could use some help figuring out what to ask for help with, i.e. how to proceed to debug this without damaging the existing UW-IMAP setup in the process. The goal is to cut over to dovecot once I can be sure it really is working compatibly, but until then I have a large user base and can't blow everything up. And yes, I really, truly have RTFM (i.e. read the Wiki, the troubleshooting pages, the migration pages).

After over eight passes with the fsck and a new machine I have mostly recovered but this being a personal server the backups were a half-job. So for speed I recovered the mail directly off the bad file system. Most of the data was fine but a few files were corrupt and as a result I have found Dovecot to be a real pain when it comes to handling a wrong W value. I am having to separately look at the mail.log and just systematically remove the W value as a quick work-around. But it seems to me that it would be much easier to have this done by Dovecot when it realises it has this wrong value, especially as Dovecot seems to drop the connection of that user after encountering this problem. Can I suggest as an improvement this scenario is handled better? I saw one posting which said "this should never happen" but clearly it can and I think there could be better handing of it perhaps? Hi all I have setup dovecot lda instead of maildrop on my courier server. Delivery is working, sieve plugin too, but i can't figure out why lda can't send emails via sendmail (vacation). I always get error Error: Sendmail process terminated abnormally, exit status 67 And i know why, but i don't know how to setup lda to make it work . Here is .courier file where is redirect to lda. | /usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver -a $RECIPIENT -f $SENDER But the deliver does not pass recipient address to sendmail. The two search options are From + To + Subject, or "entire messages", which puts together a large OR query: SRCH1069 SEARCH CHARSET UTF-8 OR (OR (OR FROM "waldo" TO "waldo") SUBJECT "waldo") BODY "waldo" I also checked to see whether the header fields are included in the FTS index but it didn't appear so. The http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/PostfixAndDovecotSASL suggests "passdb pam" and "userdb passwd" -- is it possible to configure sasl authentication using a dovecot.conf like http://pastebin.com/6JWE5jp1? Hello We are using dovecot 1.2.x. In our setup we will have 1200 concurrent imap users (maildirs) and we have 2xraid5 sas 15k diks mounted by iSCSI. The dovecot server (RHEL 5 x64) is a virtual machine in our vmware esx cluster. We want to minimize disk I/O, what config options should we use. We can "exchange" CPU & RAM to minimize disk i/o. Should we change to dovecot 2.0? Maybe mdbox can help us? Maybe ext4 instead of ext3? Any idea is welcome. Regards Javier

I got around to trying the 0.2.2 managesieve listener and it's not working for me. As soon as the client authenticates, the connection is closed and the following is logged on the server: > Dec 13 11:48:30 managesieve(xx(a)yy.com): Error: user xx(a)yy.com: Initialization failed: Namespace 'Mobile/': Unknown mail storage driver virtual > Dec 13 11:48:30 managesieve(xx(a)yy.com): Error: Invalid user settings. Refer to server log for more information. I do have such a virtual namespace defined in dovecot.conf, obviously, and it works fine with dovecot 2.0.8. Additionally, the sieve plugin is working fine for lda, dovecot's deliver is executing it perfectly. Do I need to add a setting or plugin to "protocol managesieve" for this? Combed the wiki to no avail.

I am hoping to use extra fields to migrate certain accounts in advance for testing, and I can't find info on setting up extra fields with the "passwd" backend. Is this possible, or will I have to use another approach?

Hello Timo, and all. Preface: From time to time we have problems with thunderbird. The problem is that mail client begin to sync users inbox (or other folder) and this process didn't stop. Last time we have this situation - our monitoring system shows unusual amount of imap traffic send to one of local hosts. This host was - terminal server and 20 users worked with their mailboxes that time. But normal 20 imap session can't fork that amount of traffic (5.2Gb). After measuring local thunderbird's cached mailboxes we find out that one user have local INBOX about 19Gb and size is rising. On server side - this mailbox was 89Mb. And after killing thunderbird in logs appear: Dec 10 17:35:53 IMAP(user@domain 192.168.2.92): Info: Disconnected: Logged out bytes=1133593/1175103 Dec 10 17:35:53 IMAP(user@domain 192.168.2.92): Info: Disconnected: Logged out bytes=15964/44364 Dec 10 17:35:53 IMAP(user@domain 192.168.2.92): Info: Disconnected: Logged out bytes=54758/944989 Dec 10 17:35:53 IMAP(user@domain 192.168.2.92): Info: Disconnected: Logged out bytes=6532/43930 Dec 10 17:35:53 IMAP(domain@domain 192.168.2.92): Info: Connection closed bytes=235408/4797272694 As you can see - 4.8Gb of data was send to this client - and who knows - what was that. So we have 5.2Gb send to host with 20 active sessions and 4.8Gb send to one user. Of course lifetime of this connection can be much more than last day, but problem disappeared after killing it. This is not single accident. But this one was hard to find out because of 20-25 users working at the same time from 1 server. So it will be great if dovecot has feature to limit the amount of data send per connection. For example: service imap { bytes_per_connection = 100Mb } And after limit reached - close connection and log warning. This will much simplify fights with sometimes become crazy imap clients. That do you think?

Hello everyone, I'm experimenting with the quota warning plugin. I have the following setting in Dovecot's general config: plugin { quota_warning = storage=75%% /var/www/contrib/doquotawarning.py 75 quota_warning2 = storage=90%% /var/www/contrib/doquotawarning.py 90 } The doquotawarning.py script is working okay -- meaning that the user gets a warning. My SQL backend uses the following query: user_query = \ SELECT m.maildir AS home, 1001 AS uid, 1001 AS gid, \ CONCAT('*:bytes=', m.quota, 'M') AS quota_rule, \ 'Trash:ignore' AS quota_rule2 \ FROM mailbox m \ INNER JOIN domain d \ ON d.id = m.domainid \ WHERE d.domain = '%d' \ AND m.user = '%n' Where m.quota is the user's personal quota (in MB). As you can see, we ignore the 'Trash' box, when considering the usage data. We are using the dict quota backend. Now this is what happens. Assume we have 'user(a)example.org', that has a quota of 10MB and he currently has 5MB in use. Now someone sends a 3MB email towards 'user(a)example.org'. Dovecot does indeed generate the warning message (75%), that arrives correctly 'together' with the 3MB email. Now the user moves the 3MB email to trash. This goes well, however: Dovecot generates the 75% warning message again. Which is not necessary: the user was cleaning his mailbox, i.e. usage is 5MB again. I have the feeling Dovecot is generating the warning event twice. When getting from e.g. 50% to 79% and when the usage is lowered from 87% to 70%. I have the feeling this is either not the correct behavior, or I'm misinformed. My dovecot logs revealed a crash in the dovecot/imap process a few days ago. It appears to have dereferenced 0x00000004 in the storage shared lib. Unfortunately, I didn't get a core and I'm not sure how to reproduce it. Dovecot 2.0.8 on linux32. Two questions: 1) How can I be sure I get a core next time? I think it's because I run dovecot/imap under a mail uid and didn't have write permission to the cwd. Any way to verify that was it, and be sure it works? 2) What other settings would provide more info if it happens again? Would it be ok to set director_user_expire to a very high value? Say 1 day? This would pretty much lock a user into a specific server right? What if I set it to 1 year? :) What happens when the server a user is locked into disappears (i remove it from the pool). Then a day later, I add the server again. I am using postfix + dovecot 2.0.6 + mailman And others 2 serves with only postfix and dovecot writing at same storage with OCFS2. We are having problens with IOwait, and still trying to figure out why that is happen! But, problem becomes much worse when some emails are used in mailman, when it happens all 3 serves became really slow. iowait goes to 80. Does anyone have an idea how to slow down the dovecot lda ? I want it to nit to iwrite so much email, at least take a small break between each mail!! Any ideias? Thanks! []'sf.rique

Is it possible to have dovecot 2.0.8 using LMTP run a shell script each time it delivers a message to a users mailbox? Hi, We've been running 1.2 Dovecot for a while and are happy with it. In trying to migrate from symlinks to shared folders I see a similar problem to that shown at http://www.mail-archive.com/dovecot@dovecot.org/msg32083.html . For example: . lsub "" "*" * LSUB () "." "Users..INBOX" The advice given in the thread is to upgrade to 2.0. We currently use Debian's 1.2 package and I'm reluctant to move since I can't find a stable 2.0 .deb (http://wiki2.dovecot.org/PrebuiltBinaries only has repository heads of 2.0). Building from source is an option but I'd really prefer to be using a package. Can anybody advise on an appropriate way to go? Like the original poster I am seeing INBOX under the shared namespace when I try to share. I'm also getting an empty /var/mail/virtual/users/Maildir created (maildir:/var/mail/virtual/users/%n/Maildir/). We formerly had an INBOX prefix namespace from a Courier migration too, but it has been deleted (to no avail). Shared folders do work, though. It just requires 'anyone l' in /etc/dovecot/dovecot-acls/.DEFAULT (though I'd really rather not do this!). Hello Dovecot users, The new Dovecot v2.0.8 release has a few changes that prompted changes in Pigeonhole as well. This means that a new release of Pigeonhole is also necessary, because otherwise things will not compile anymore. Apart from a few rather minor bugfixes, some of which originate in Dovecot, one TODO item has finally been resolved: the reject action uses the LDA mail reject API, meaning that the associated LDA settings now also work for Pigeonhole, as would be expected. Changelog v0.2.2: * LDA Sieve plugin: started using Dovecot LDA reject API for the reject extension. This means that the LDA reject_reason and reject_subject settings now also work for Pigeonhole's LDA Sieve plugin. * Did some work on the new sieve-filter tool. It is mostly functional, but it is not finished yet. * Dovecot change: services' default vsz_limits weren't being enforced correctly in earlier v2.0 releases. Now that they are enforced, you might notice that the default limits are too low and you need to increase them. This problem will show up in logs as "out of memory" errors. See default_vsz_limit and service { vsz_limit } settings. - Imap4flags: fixed segfault bug occurring in multiscript context. - Added version checking to the ManageSieve settings plugin. [Dovecot] Dovecot as IMAP proxy to Exchange

Hello list, I'm looking into the possibility to setup dovecot to act as an IMAP proxy to an Exchange server. Things i know beforehand: - I will not be able to use the ldap (Active Directory) user DN for auth binds (but i discovered that i could could use the user userPrincipalName attribute as bind DN. I tested it using ldapsearch and it worked fine.) - I will not be able to perform any unbinded searches. - The Exchange server is unique, so i can setup a static proxy route to the server. Given the above, i'd like to post some questions: 1 - Will i be able to use auth_bind = yes given the restrictions? My first guess is that this might work if i use something like "auth_bind_userdn = %u(a)example.org" 2 - Will i be able to specify a static route to the exchange server, not having to rely on that information from the AD itself? Another thing i'd like to know is if NTLM auth can be used while dovecot acts only as proxy. I am running Dovecot 1.2.16 and considering moving up to 2.0.8. I have found <http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Upgrading/2.0> but there's not a lot about deploying a 2.0 server alongside an existing 1.2. Any hints on a seamless approach to this, especially one that might allow me to upgrade individual users in place, without moving their maildirs into a new tree and still avoid issues with 1.2/2.0 sharing access?

[Dovecot] How to handle "Waiting for authentication process..."

Sometimes, when dovecot authentication processes are busy, dovecot write reply "Waiting for authentication process to respond.." to client. Roundcube webmail do not understand it and invalidate user session. My question is what is a good practise to handle this situation by client software? One Roundcube user proposes to detect such response then wait a moment and try again. Is there any standard for this? How long should we wait? [Dovecot] local seen flags with shared mailboxes

Hello all, after recent upgrade from 2.0.5 to 2.0.8 it seems that local seen flags for mails reside in shared mailboxes doesn´t work anymore. Before the upgrade I had read mails with account #1. Account #2 (who has access via acl) saw the mails still as unread. Now, no matter who read the mails, the other account see the same flags, immediately. I read the related wiki pages again and tried to find any configuration error, unfortunately without much success. I´ve attached output from "doveconf -n" and a debug logfile. Thanks a lot! Tim

You don't need to specifically enable it with fetchmail. It will under certain circumstances default to IPv6, which in your case happened. As also mentioned, your postfix seems to not bind to the IPv6 address by default, though, or it has deliberately been disabled. Moreover, your router is not even in the picture here -- just like dovecot, FWIW. Fetchmail fetches the mail from a remote server, and tries to deliver it locally. That local delivery step is generating the log messages. A mail, sent from and to your box. Long after the data stream passed your router... [Dovecot] proxy and gpg processing

Hi I have dovecot running as pure proxy for accessing imap and pop mailboxes on other servers. How can I do the following scenario: When a client user reads a gpg signed or gpg encrypted email through the proxy, can I verify/decrypt the email before it gets delivered to the client user? Ideally I would like to write a perl program which processes the email within the proxy before it gets delivered to the user. With Sieve I can not do this, is there another way to achieve this? Hello, Finally managed to sync an outlook client to dovecot. Looks like it's working. Questions though ; : What are the limits? Number of Folders ? Number of mails per folder ? E.g. for a client of mine, I know that she uses about 5Gb of data at the moment (and counting). Now, this same outlook client consists of the following : 1. about thirty (30) folders ranging from 1000 messages per folder to 100 messages per folder 2. A "Sent Items" folder with about 4,000 messages (and counting) 3. [Dovecot] CentOS 5 + selinux

I've just installed CentOS 5.5 and dovecot 2.0.7. Out of the box, it worked ok with local user accounts. Then I enable selinux and I could no loger login to imap server. I can deal with that via a local policy. In case this is relevant: kernel: [17549.714369] imap-login[11704]: segfault at 0 ip b75c3d23 sp bf888178 error 4 in libc-2.11.2.so[b7551000+140000] If no host field attribute is present in ldap (like mailHost for qmail-ldap), and we are trying to use proxy, then dovecot segfaults. Hi, i want to use unix groups in my ACLs. http://wiki2.dovecot.org/ACL says, I can do that with a post-login script (http://wiki2.dovecot.org/PostLoginScripting) I have verified, that the script is running, and that ACL_GROUPS is correct. But I still can't access the Mailbox. Solaris-x86-10u8 Dovecot-1.2.7 Large mail setup, with quite a few MX servers working well. Generally everything is super. But every now and then, we get "bouts of bad weather" - which only lasts a short time, and curiously nearly always occur when mail is sent to customer mailing lists. I suspect mostly because of that 1 message has multiple recipients within the same domain. Perhaps. Now this is actually due to slapd saying: Dec 6 08:46:25 vmx15.unix slapd[3958]: [ID 763815 local4.debug] connection_input: conn=72057 deferring operation: too many executing And since it happens most frequently with mailing-lists, or mails with many recipients, I would guess it is due to a large number of lookups happening in a very short time. Since dovecot_destination_recipient_limit=1, I believe 'deliver' is only ever called with just one recipient for "-d", and 'deliver' probably-does-not (?) query LDAP for any of the other "To:" addresses in the message body. Is that the case? Secondary, the dovecot-ldap.conf for dovecot-auth has: hosts = 127.0.0.1 172.20.12.33 172.20.12.23 172.20.12.113 So even though localhost's slapd was busy at the time, the other three hosts were definitely not. Is LDAP fail-over ... failing... in this case? How many concurrent queries does dovecot-auth perform? Any way to tweak this value? Admittedly, postfix/dovecot does handle this situation correctly, as 'temporary failure' and mail delivery is merely delayed. But at the same time, it *could* be something with an easy fix as well. Now that v2.0 seems to be getting stable, I finally started v2.1 branch: http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-2.1/ So far there are just some API changes to fix some annoyances and to make it simpler. They'll probably keep coming for a while more to make future work easier. As for larger upcoming features, I'm hoping for: - simplify index files and make it write only via lib-fs (but keep backwards compatibility & make v2.0 forwards compatible) - make lib-storage API support asynchronous and support parallel lookups - use async disk io as much as possible & get rid of all lock waits inside lib-storage -> it'll be ok to have lots of imap/pop3 connections per process, at least for some storage backends - write imap-client lib-storage backend (make it fast using above async stuff - using configurable number of IMAP connections) - this could maybe also be used to access other users' shared mailboxes when it can't be done directly - design a mailbox format (maybe based on dbox) for key-value databases, implement it via lib-fs and implement a lib-fs backend for one such database - merge Apple's CATENATE and URLAUTH patch But if some company desperately wants me to work on other stuff, that list can change. BTW. I'm moving back to Finland in two weeks. Maybe I'll also get some studying done towards my Master's degree. :)

Dear List, up to Dovecot 2.07 I used "--enable-header-install" for the Sieve Plugin when configuring Dovecot before compiling. With 2.0.8 I get the following message when running the configure script: "configure: WARNING: unrecognized options: --enable-header-install" Is this intentionally? While using Ubuntu 10.10 + Dovecot 1.2.12 + Postfix 2.7.1-1: To export the authentication interface to Postfix, besides the usual smtpd_sasl_* lines at postfix, I am using: the following /etc/dovecot/auth.d/somename.auth file: socket listen { client { path = /var/spool/postfix/private/auth-client mode = 0660 user = postfix group = postfix } } But after restarting dovecot and doing a 'sudo dovecot -n' I get: ... socket: type: listen client: path: /var/spool/postfix/private/auth-client mode: 432 user: postfix group: postfix As 660<>432, is this Dovecot 1.2.12's expected behaviour? Hello people! I have huge problems with IO wait becase dovecot configured to use maildir is under OCFS2 1.4. Now i have an question to OCFS2 each disk action is really heavy becaue it has no index. Now i am thinking in what can be done to heltp my system to use less disk. Looking for index and etc in dovecot i found this, this disables the index file on disk and leave it on ram or it disable the index files ? If you really want to, you can also disable the index files completely by appending :INDEX=MEMORY I am only trying to get dovecot to work faster. Right now we have to waing some seconds to dovecot list all emails or read an email. I am also thinking in right index to an NFS but i don't know if this makes any diferences in performance. Hello to all, I am setting up a mail server using sendmail and dovecot 2.0.7 with maildir storage. I want to use dovecot lmtp as local mail delivery agent becouse when I send a message to multiple recipients it deliver the message to all recipients with hard links instead of store n copies of the message. The only think I can't set up is make dovecot-lmtp reading the .forward file in the user's home directory. I think I am missing something, becouse dovecot-lda read that file but don't do hard links when deliver the mail. What I am missing? [Dovecot] SSL issues on separate IPs

Hi Timo, I have set up 2.07 to answer on several different IP's with different SSL certs, like the following : local 209.132.xx.4 { ssl_cert = </shared/templates/res/1040/certs/*.xxxxx.com.crt-pem-298 ssl_key = </shared/templates/res/1040/certs/*.xxxxx.com.key-298 } I have several of these, and there appears to be a problem with one in particular that is dropping connections, and I'm not sure why. In this case it is a wildcard cert issued from godaddy, and I have the cert file in pem format with the chain on it. I have another completely separate local IP setup with a different cert on it that works without any problems. This particular one drops the connection when I try to connect to IMAP using TLS on port 143, or using the IMAP SSL port of 993. When I try it using Thunderbird, I am using the default settings for both tests. The Thunderbird error I get is "The server has disconnected. The server may have gone down or there may be a network problem." I don't see any errors in the dovecot error log or the system error log, and when using doveadm who to view the current connections, it does not show a connection. I tried enabling the logs for SSL errors, but nothing appears for my IP when attempting to connect. FreeBSD 8.1 with openssl 0.9.8n. The IP's are on the box and are on the loopback interface if that makes any difference for a direct server return load balancing system. But, I don't know how that would make a difference since one of the separated IP's works with its cert, and the other one disconnects. Thanks, Tim. [Dovecot] Static userdb with LDAP passdb but without "allow_all_users=yes"?

Hi, Is it possible to have a static user database along with an LDAP password database and *not* be forced to set "allow_all_users=yes" for the userdb? The wiki page on static user database says "Normally static userdb handles this by doing a passdb lookup instead." How should the passdb behave in order for this to work? In my tests (on a test server) I am using Dovecot 2.0.7 and Postfix 2.7.0 on Ubuntu 10.04.1. I use (or am trying to use) LMTP with Dovecot and Postfix according to the HOWTO in the wiki [1] as well as dynamic address verification with LMTP [2]. Users are virtual, using a static userdb and passwords from LDAP. I also serve local system users which is why I also have userdb and passdb pam, but this isn't the issue here. The best fix for this is to prevent it from happening. Configure your setup so that a user always gets redirected to the same server (unless it's down). This also means that mail deliveries must be done by the same server, or alternatively it shouldn't update index files. Dovecot flushes NFS caches when needed if you set mail_nfs_storage=yes, but unfortunately this doesn't work 100%, so you can get random errors. Disabling NFS attribute cache helps a lot in getting rid of caching related errors, but this makes the performance MUCH worse and increases the load on NFS server. This can usually be done by giving actimeo=0 or noac mount option. Index files As described above, it's better to redirect users to the same server whenever possible. If you do this, it might also be a good idea to keep index files stored locally in that server. If user gets occasionally redirected to another server, the indexes will then be created locally there. This isn't a problem. However you might want to create a cronjob to delete old index directories. If you choose to keep the index files stored in NFS, you'll need to set mmap_disable=yes. Both the mmap_disable and indexing to NFS will result in a notable performance hit. If you're not running lockd you'll have to set lock_method=dotlock, but this degrades performance. Note that many NFS installations have problems with lockd. [Dovecot] Virtual folder root cannot be opened, virtual folders ok

I am running dovecot 1.2.16 and not able to figure out an error that happens whenever I select the root of a virtual mailbox tree. At the moment I have a simple maildir store, accessed via IMAP, and have successfully added a virtual fs namespace with two subdirectories. I have created dovecot-virtual entries in the subdirs and they are working fine; they show the expected messages, etc. My problem is with the top-level virtual directory. If I happen to select it in Thunderbird (Eudora, actually), I receive a popup "The current command did not succeed. The mail server responded:Mailbox doesn't exist: Mobile." It also fails in the same way during search, which interrupts it and makes other client operations fail. I have tried placing a dovecot-virtual rule in the directory, leaving the directory empty, moving it in or out of the maildir tree, tweaking namespace and INDEX/LAYOUT options all with the same result - the subdirs are fine, the virtual root fails. I must be missing something obvious. Clue, please? Thanks! [Dovecot] Virtual mailboxes and subfolders

Hello again, I'd like to know if there is a way to have subfolders in virtual mailbox? In my virtual namespaces, I have some virtual maiboxes named like this : Mailbox Mailbox.SubMailbox (the separator is '.') But when I try to access the submailbox, depending on my client, it either : - Tells me the mailbox doesn't exists (Roundcube) - Don't show me any error, but don't display any mail in the mailbox (Apple Mail.app) So I'd like to know if this is because I can't make subfolders of virtual mailboxes, or if I'm doing something wrong. Hello again, I have an installation with dovecot and I am accessing it through linux mint and thunderbird v3.0.10 As thunderbird "subscribes" to dovecot, it does the following : Inbox Trash MyName(a)Mydomain.gr Local Folders Local Folders MyName(a)Mydomain.gr subfolder A Subfolder B Subfolder C Subfolder D Subfolder E Local Folders Outbox OK, I have to admit a have a couple of folders more than what I need. But this is fine. My problem is that *everything* is in its respective place (say, *all* subfolders have their respective e-mail properly laid in there), but the messages I keep on the inbox is the "Inbox" folder. What I would like to have is my Inbox messages under (or *on*) MyName(a)Mydomain.gr folder. Also, trash mail goes to : Trash MyName(a)Mydomain.gr folder. Could this also be under the more generic MyName(a)Mydomain.gr folder further down the tree ? (Hope you understand this :-) The tree above is represented exactly as it looks like on thunderbird (with the indentations and everthing). Hi Timo, ok, I have a large 2.07 NFS setup, and I have been monitoring error messages to make sure I catch things, and I've come across a lot of messages that come in pairs and look like this : Dec 01 17:48:35 lda(paul(a)xxxxxx.com): Error: write(/home/mailboxes/data/301/paul@xxxxxx.com/Maildir/tmp/1291254514.M620308P83269.mta2.scaledsystems.com) failed: Permission denied Dec 01 17:48:35 lda(paul(a)xxxxxx.com): Error: sieve: msgid=unspecified: failed to store into mailbox 'INBOX': Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information. [2010-12-01 17:48:34] I run the dovecot installation as a single user, and that user owns ALL of my virtual accounts directories. I checked, and there aren't any permissions that aren't correct. All the way up the tree has the same owner and group, and there are plenty of messages that make it through without any issue. The NFS servers don't have enough load on them to return errors for file operations, so I don't believe it is that. We use high end NetApp equipment and have never had any problems with them. I'm baffled as to why it gets permission denied message on the tmp directory. There does not seem to be a recognizable pattern for times, or particular accounts. I've just got a heck of a lot of these messages in the deliver log error files... I use qmail control files to feed the lda delivery for messages. When these errors happen, is the message lost? or is it still queued up in qmail's queue when the lda gives a fatal error like that? hallo, I have a problem configuring lmtp service. I use postfix+dovcot2.0.7 with "recipient_delimeter = -". If i switch to dovecot-lda, all works fine, but going to lmtp service it dosn't. Maybe it works with default delimeter "+", but i plan to move from qmail system with many existent mailboxes. Enclosed some configuration/logentries. Can you give me a hint ? Can I use PAM authentication, witch get the users data from a external database (like mysql)? I'm using director on dovecot 2.0 At present, I know that two instances are connected, If I stop of one system, then I can watch how to the connections are closed on port 5000. I defined 5000 as director port. [Dovecot] "doveadm auth user" requiring a tty

Hello, "doveadm auth user password" may be scripted without a glitch. But this comes with the usual problem of a "ps" command showing the password, which may be especially annoying in case of a single-letter typo: the almost correct password is then visible for about two seconds... Clearing the password argument (zeroing it) in doveadm-auth.c, in the hope to reduce the window during which the password may be catched, didn't prove successful. "doveadm auth user" could be an alternative, but it imperatively requires a tty, which may not always easily nor efficiently be available in a scripting environment. [Dovecot] Plan: ACL changes

Global ACLs are intended to apply to a few mailboxes for all users. For example you could have a master user called "spam" that would have access to each user's "spam" mailbox, but nothing else. Global ACLs are kind of ugly. A mailbox's ACL is found from exactly the same name as what the mailbox's virtual name is. So for example if you have namespace { separator = / prefix = foo/ } And you have a mailbox called foo/bar, the global ACL is looked up from the <global dir>/foo/bar. The problem there of course is what if you want to set global ACLs for "foo". You can't have both directory and a file called "foo". So if this happens, Dovecot instead looks up the ACLs from <global dir>/foo/.DEFAULT file. The name for this file is slightly confusing, and also of course if there really is a mailbox called ".DEFAULT" it won't really work well. Global acl is currently configured by giving its path to acl setting, such as: plugin { acl = vfile:/etc/dovecot/global-acls } So plan #1: deprecate this usage. If global-acls is a directory, keep using the old method. But the new preferred method would be for it to be a file that contains all of the global ACLs. Typically there should be very few entries, so this should also be more efficient. Also this would allow setting default ACLs for namespaces by using wildcards. For example you could have: * masteruser +lrw spam spamuser +lr test/* testuser +lr etc. The * would match only within a single namespace, so if you had more than one, the * entry would match only the one having prefix="". The * entry would be especially helpful for master users who you intend to have access to user's all mailboxes. Currently there is no good way to implement this. Plan #2: Add support for per-user default namespace ACLs. In the mail root directory if "dovecot-default-acl" file exists, it's used as the default ACLs. I'm not entirely sure what should happen if it conflicts with the global ACLs. Probably they both should be simply merged, since both can only be created by an admin. Probably the per-user ACL should be allowed to override the global ACLs. Any thoughts? Since neither of these would break backwards compatibility, I could add them to v2.0.x.

[Dovecot] Error from mobile client (Palm Pre)

Where I used to be able to access the server without incident, I can no longer receive mail on the mobile device. While digging through the code I remember having seen something like an (yet undocumented) "update_query" for SQL (and I guess something similar for the LDAP faction as well)?! Can that be used to augment the "doveadm pw" function to actually /set/ the password for a given user instead of just "calculating" the hash, so that an operator can copy&waste it into the respective passdb? Just curious ... I guess it would be nice to have "doveadm" become as central point of administration (yeah, yeah - we would still need a "create user" and "delete user", etc. -- but we would at least be further on our way, wouldn't we? :-) Just 2¢ from Clemens
