[Dovecot] Static passdb support?

Timo, Do you have any plans to add a static passdb? I'm essentially emulating one with sqlite on my director - have it connect to /dev/null and return three static fields for all queries. Works fine, but it would seem a little cleaner to me if I could just do: passdb { driver = static args = password='' nopasswd='Y' proxy='Y' } -Brad

[Dovecot] doveadm quota get -u someone@ourdomains.com

With the expire running from mysql, on 2.0.1, we get no errors with: " doveadm expunge -A mailbox Trash savedbefore 7d" we have the mail_plugins defined differently for each protocol ({imap=quota,expire,imap_quota} {pop3=quota,expire} {lda=quota,expire,sieve}). When trying "doveadm quota get -u someone(a)ourdomains.com" the output is: "doveadm(root): Fatal: Unknown command 'quota', but plugin quota exists. Try to set mail_plugins=quota" When adding an additional, global mail_plugins=quota, we get: "Segmentation fault" Is there a specific, proper way beyond the way I read of 1.2.x for defining the plugins. Thank you again. Yes, you're on the way :-) Problem was that in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf was: mail_location = maildir:/home/vmail/%u/ instead of my new line: mail_location = maildir:/home/vmail/%d/%u/ I think it's all right now. [Dovecot] sieve + homedirectory

hi.. system: dovecot 2.0.1 + pigenhole my global sieve script is used but my users sieve scrips not. the user scripts arent even compiled. so i think the problem is with the home path im using ldap as userdb (ive tryed staticdb but i need the uid from my ldap, path is /home/MAILBOXES/hpeter/mail) user_attrs = homeDirectory=home=/home/MAILBOXES/%$/,uid=mail=maildir:/home/MAILBOXES/%$/mail user_filter = (&(objectClass=gosaMailAccount)(|(mail=%u)(gosaMailAlternateAddress=%u)(uid=%u))) in sieve i use: sieve_dir = ~/sieve any ideas ? all mails are stored correctly Hans

Yes, I know that I'm using maildir, but when we create an account, file sistem look likes: /home/vmail/domain.com/user1/new /home/vmail/domain.com/user1/cur /home/vmail/domain.com/user1/tmp My problem is that dovecot is creating additional folders: /home/vmail/user1/new /home/vmail/domain.com/user/cur /home/vmail/domain.com/user/tmp Mail are received in first directories, second ones are created but not used. What's the problem? Hello, I would like to convert all users mail from maildir to mdbox. My Dovecot version is 2.0.1, converted from 1.2.13 but config was rewritten from scratch. http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Migration/MailFormat says following: maildir -> mdbox migration. Set mail_location=mdbox:~/mdbox and run doveadm convert -u username maildir:~/Maildir but doveadm does not know a command like "convert". Is there a _working_ way to convert maildir to mdbox ? How to do that with all Dovecot mail users (about 10000) ? Christian

Hi, I seem to be forced to run the auth proces as root because I want to use pam for local users. My gut feeling says that this is Not Good. Is there another way? For the virtual users 'vmail' is good enough because that user may access the MySQL database. This is on Ubuntu server 10.04.1 and Dovecot 1.2.9. TIA, Egbert Jan

The expire dictionary is EXACTLY like the example you posted in the wiki2. Guys, We have been trying to establish if there is a way to get some type of notification from Dovecot when a message is appended to a mailbox or when a message has its flags updated. These are the 2 use cases: A message is appended to the mailbox "/Watch", we want to trigger "processing" of the message immediately it arrives. A message in the "Inbox" has its status changed from Unseen to Seen, we want to trigger some code to indicate the message has been "processed". Regards, John

Dear Experts, I configured Samba, Kerberos, etc., can login to my CentOS using ADS account, but missing something in my Dovecot config. This is not a huge problem but our firewall is looking for aborted login attempts, for imap/pop3 (relevant to dovecot) dos attempts and, if many people start having problems of their packets being dropped, we will have to stop looking for the statement or lower security slightly, more attempts over a period of time before filtering. However, thanks to your idle feature, there is less of these messages; so, I don't think we will have a problem. The only client that doesn't have a problem is our php webmail but we don't look in dovecot's log for failed attempts from here; as, it is from the same ip, to dovecot from php, constantly without reference to the user. This has been happening since 1.2.11 with us. We don't use any imap relay but was looking into imapproxy for cacheing speed and preventing advanced ddos attempts, those from users with access. Hi, Thanks everyone for your help and input. I think perhaps my attempt to be brief and focused in posing my question has led to some confusion about my needs and configuration. I do not have the luxury of being able to segregate the server (postfix and dovecot) from client (GUI, etc) on different machines. I am, as Charles' surmised, using this to aggregate disparate mail streams into a single location, and using dovecot to serve it. Since I must run client-ish applications on this machine, the application firewall is desirable. The anticipated load on this system from the server side is quite light, so the throughput overhead incurred by the application firewall is negligible. The problem appears to be that--for some reason--dovecot identifies itself incorrectly to the application firewall, resulting in the garbage shown in the logs and failure to permit this connection (the firewall is configured to explicitly permit connections for dovecot). I note that other daemons (e.g. postfix, sshd, etc) do not exhibit this defect; the firewall works as expected for every other service I've tried except dovecot. Also the ?'s aren't really "?" marks; they're trans-ascii characters with high bits set that my mailer doesn't like very much. It really looks like a misdirected pointer or something somewhere, but I'm not familiar enough with the codebase to know where to start looking, or if in fact it is something else that is misconfigured. Hi, I have a very large inbox (~146K mails) in Maildir format and dovecot seems to spend a lot of time rescanning the directory, especially when the server is loaded. I'm not sure whether this is triggered by Thunderbird or done regularly, but it takes longer when the server is loaded, so sometimes it seems that it is scanning continuously. Since it takes around 2000 getdents64() syscalls to scan my inbox, I'm wondering whether the buffer size is a bit small with 4KB and might benefit from being configurable: ... getdents64(8, /* 73 entries */, 4096) = 4088 getdents64(8, /* 73 entries */, 4096) = 4088 getdents64(8, /* 73 entries */, 4096) = 4088 getdents64(8, /* 73 entries */, 4096) = 4088 getdents64(8, /* 73 entries */, 4096) = 4088 ... Hi All, I am getting the following in the mail error log deliver(julie): safe_mkstemp(/home/julie/.temp.geomail.10443.) failed: Permission denied This is correct julie does not have access to write to her home directory Julie is a system user who is chrooted so her home is owned by root, this is for when she logs in via sftp to retrieve files she can only access folders below her home. I am using Maildir and julie does have access to ~Maildir, is there any reason why deliver is attempting to use her user directory and not her Maildir? Cheers Ian

[Dovecot] Combining ManageSieve with hand-written scripts

Hi, new to Dovecot, forgive me if I'm missing something basic... I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to use a couple of custom rules alongside ManageSieve. Most of the time I like the ManageSieve interface in Roundcube, but there's one rule that I can't get it to do the way I want (it's a notify rule, and I don't like the way Roundcube constructs the notify). I figured out how to write it by hand, but of course I can't put my own rules in Roundcube's file or it gets really confused. I tried adding an include to the generated file, but Roundcube politely removes it for me the next time I use the rule editor. (Squirrelmail doesn't seem to be any better in this regard.) I thought I could do something like sieve_before = ~/sieve/custom.sieve but that doesn't seem to work. I couldn't even see any evidence in the log that it attempted to look at that file. Apparently sieve_before isn't meant to work on a per-user basis. If I do a global sieve_before, can I have it "include :personal"? If so, what's going to happen with the script compilation? From what I understand, it can't be compiled globally, since each user has a different custom rule set. Am I trying to do the impossible here? Thanks for any ideas, Jason Bleazard

I don't understand how to use multiple keys/certs on different IPs without SNI. http://wiki2.dovecot.org/SSL/DovecotConfiguration explains how to use different keys for different protocols like POP3 and IMAP. But how to bind those keys/ on IPs/Ports? Looks like it is not possible to use ssl_cert inside service { inet_listener {} } Is it still necessary to run multiple instances like it was in Dovecot 1.2.x? Could you explain the iterate_query in any kind of sql. I'm guessing to just use the query, correctly, that's failing as iterate_query= and put it in the service auth file which includes password_query and user_query. then, I'm guessing to add something like: iteratedb { driver = sql args = /path/to/sql.conf } The wiki2 only says: "When the SQL userdb module is used make sure that the iterate_query setting in /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf.ext matches your database layout." it should give an example query. [Dovecot] Can't get dovecot to see email folders

So I'm very frustrated, I've spent the better part of a day trying to get dovecot 2.0.1 working...Most of the documentation on the Wiki seems to think you are running an older version and therefore very little of it applies. I'm running 2.0.1 on OpenSolaris. I seem to have 2 remaining issues: 1) Dovecot is not able to determine the home directory 2) IMAP clients can not get to the mail folder directory. One client is reporting that it can't open it in read only mode. 3) I tried to get raw logging working, but apparently I couldn't because of #1. The architecture of Dovecot makes it difficult to transition from another IMAP server. If I force the MBOX to be /home/%u/mail, all of my clients think the folders are in /home/%u/mail/mail. If I set mbox location to /home/%u, then dovecot tries to create .subscription and .imap files/directories in the users home dir which it doesn't have permission to do. It would be nice if you could configure Dovecot in such a way as to make transition easier, such as the ability to strip off a duplicate trailing path, ie /home/%u/mail/mail becomes /home/%u/mail....Otherwise this necessitates visiting countless IMAP clients for reconfiguration... Hi, I'm fighting all weekend on with auth and pam to authenticate local system users. testuser is such local user and is in passwd and shadow. I want to have local system users (testuser is one of them) and virtual users. The virtual part works fine but I cannot get the local user to connect. Still pam fails finding the user. The suggested password mismatch at the end is, in my eyes, because there is no user in the first place. I verified the password by interactive login to the account. The pam module (dovecot) is just the default file with three @includes in it. I have IMAP folder with the name Sent Mail and i want whenever client uses any MUA to send mail from my server his mail must be kept in server's IMAP folder which is Sent Mail instead of local Sent folder. 2. Whenever user configures account in MUA, MUA automatically create some new folder like Junk Mail etc. while i am already using Spam folder to keep spam message in that folder so let me know how can i save myself from this. 3. Is there any thing which can also put deleted message in my server's Trash folder. Thanks

[Dovecot] When should dictionary entries for the expire plugin be added/updated?

I've set up Dovecot 2.0 with the expire plugin using an SQLite DB, and when mail is delivered via dovecto-lda, the DB gets updated as expected. However, when I use Thunderbird 3.1.2 for Mac OS X to move a message to any of the folders known to the expire plugin (e.g. the 'tmp' folder), the SQLite DB is not updated. There is a roff typo in pigeonhole's sievec.1.in. Roff treats the leading apostrophe on line 54 as an invalid command and produces bad output: dump to be written to stdout. The out-file argument may also be omitted, which has the same effect as for a com- piled Sieve binary file. Note that this option is not The output should be: dump to be written to stdout. Hi, I am running dovecot 1.2.11 on mac osx 1.5.8. Everything works perfectly with the application-level firewall off, but enabling the application firewall prevents dovecot connections. I have tried explicitly authorizing dovecot in the firewall, but it does not work. I have searched everywhere I can think of to look, and haven't found a solution, but have seen a couple other reports of what seems to be the same problem. http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-2.0-sis contains the code for it. Otherwise it's the latest (as of writing this) dovecot-2.0 hg tree. Please test if you're interested in SIS. :) Once there's at least some testing, I'll probably add this to v2.0.x since very little of this new code is used when SIS is disabled (which is the default of course). SIS works pretty much like explained in http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2010-July/050832.html and http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2010-July/050992.html Two things I'm not yet entirely sure about: 1. What hash algorithm to use? Currently it's hard coded to SHA1. Besides more CPU usage, the other potential problem with larger hashes is that they also generate larger filenames. The filenames are currently hex-encoded, but to save space they could be changed to some kind of modified-base64 (base64 uses '/' chars, so it can't be regular base64). Example filename lengths: hex modified-base64 SHA1 73 50 SHA256 97 66 SHA512 161 109 Yet another possibility would be to use SHA256/SHA512 and just truncate the hash length to less number of bits. 2. Should I add support for trusting hash uniqueness and to avoid disk I/O generated by the byte-by-byte comparison? It could still first check that the file sizes match. Usage ----- You can enable SIS for sdbox and mdbox: mail_attachment_dir = /var/attachments Just setting the above enables "instant SIS", where byte-by-byte comparison is done immediately during saving mails. Alternative is to leave the comparing later by setting: mail_attachment_fs = sis-queue /var/attachments/queue:posix This does no deduplication itself yet. To do that you'll need a nighty (or whatever) run, which calls: doveadm sis deduplicate /var/attachments /var/attachments/queue There's also a feature to easily find all attachments based on a hash. You can change it from: mail_attachment_min_size = 128k It's also possible to create a plugin that adds further restrictions to when the attachment is saved separately. This might be useful to reduce disk seeks for attachments that are typically shown inline by clients/webmail. You can do this by overriding mailbox.save_is_attachment() method. If you want to distribute attachments to multiple filesystems, just create /var/attachments/[0-9a-f][0-9a-f] as symlinks pointing to whatever mount paths you want.

Hi, Second try... I have mailsystem with virtual users only (/home/vmail/domain/user). I need to integrate RT3.x (a ticketing system). I have installed the RT-client but I need to send the mail to an extrnal program. Rt wants me to insert: |/usr/bin/rt-mailgate --queue bla --action bla --url http://bla.bal/ In /etc/postfix/aliases. That does not work for me becase my local delivery agent is dovecot. The Sieve plugin seems not capable to forward to a external program. What is the right way to achieve that mail to rt@mydomain is sent to the pipe? TIA Egbert Jan

We also migrated from Courier to Dovecot nearly 9 months ago, and every now and then users complain about slowness in the imap connection. We fix it by removing the index files in the user's maildir. We use Horde as webmail, but the problem appears with any imap or pop connection, so we feel that the problem is in Dovecot. We migrated from Courier (big shout to everyone who worked on the wonderful part of the Dovecot wiki that deals with Courier migration) and I have been extremely happy with the performance gains Dovecot has given us. Not only is the IMAP part of Squirrelmail faster, but our same hardware is under far less stress than it was before the migration. To date, the only problem we have experienced is a seemingly random but significant slowdown in Squirrelmail's loading of the messages in a user's Inbox. Each time, I have been able to fix the problem by deleting the user's dovecot.index, dovecot.index.cache and dovecot.index.log files in the user's INDEX directory for their dovecot Inbox. I tried having users experiencing this problem log in to a test Squirrelmail box with mail_debug on, but I didn't see anything out of the ordinary and they report the same slowness on the test server. I don't see anything but normal login/logout IMAP lines in the production dovecot logs. I have hesitated a bit in posting to the list since this seems to be happening to a small percentage of users and it technically may be a problem with Squirrelmail, but the fact that I'm able to fix the problem by nuking Dovecot's index files has me concerned - does anyone have any suggestions for troubleshooting? My first idea when I get another one of these is to do a telnet IMAP session to Dovecot on one of the Squirrelmail boxes and see if I can get it to slow down when retrieving messages from the Inbox. We are using Maildir over NFS with the control/index files stored on NFS as well. We're doing FS quota over NFS using rquotad to query the NFS server for each user's quota. The message from dovecot -n is: service auth { unix_listener /var/spool/postfix/private/auth { group = vmail mode = 0666 user = vmail } unix_listener auth-master { mode = 0666 } } My conf file looks like userdb { driver=static args = uid=10000 gid=10000 home=/mail/%d/%n allow_all_users=yes } As you can see pretty simple, but for me it looks like that the driver=static won't be accepted. The howto doesn't say how to override this, at wiki2.dovecot.org, and I didn't know the expire dict wanted to lookup the mailbox table; I thought it only wanted to lookup the expire table and use that soley for deleting messages as all info needed was stored, in the expire table, by the expire plugin on message delivery or copy. [Dovecot] Home directories

I've noticed that a lot of people are using e.g.: mail_location = maildir:/var/vmail/%d/%n Then either they don't have home directory set, or their home directory is the same as the maildir. http://wiki.dovecot.org/VirtualUsers/Home explains all the problems of not separate home and mail directories. Also whenever I try to suggest using a separate home and mail directory, the answer is way too often: "But I'm using virtual users. (They don't have home directories.)" So I started wondering. Maybe simply renaming the "home" to something else would help here at least some. Make all of the documentation use only the new word, and add alias for userdb so that the new name and the "home" both work (I guess docs would need to keep using the "home" as field name for some more years). So far I've only come up with "vhome" as the replacement name. Other ideas?

Hi, I have mailsystem with virtual users only (/home/vmail/domain/user). I need to integrate RT3.x (a ticketing system). I have installed the client but I need to send mail to a pipe. Rt wants me to insert: |/usr/bin/rt-mailgate --queue bla --action bla --url http://bla.bal/ In /etc/postfix/aliases. That does not work for me. What is the right way to achieve that mail to rt@mydomain is sent to the pipe? Should I install, configure and use a Sieve filter? I have none installed at the moment. Or are there other (simpler?) ways? TIA Egbert Jan

Hi all, We have been running Dovecot for over a year now in our moderate volume mail environment (>4000 mailboxes) and it's been running great. However, over the past month or so we've begun to experience issues where IMAP clients will appear to "hang" for a period of time, we then see a sig 11, and afterwards mailflow returns to normal. This usually happens a few times a day. Naturally, our first instinct was to try and get a core dump, but after following the instructions at http://www.dovecot.org/bugreport.html we now recieve this warning: 2010-08-24T13:33:56-07:00 mail dovecot: child 9728 (login) killed with signal 11 (core not dumped - add -D to login_executable) (ip=208.98.210.13) Adding -D to the login_executable lines didn't seem to have any effect, we are still receiving the same message. Did we perhaps misinterpret the hint? As we've been trying for over a week now to find a way to get a dump without any success, we figured posing this to the list might help us shed some light on the issue. [Dovecot] Help needed with plugin - Read Only access to IMAP mailbox

System info: # 1.2.13: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf # OS: Linux 2.6.32-5-686-bigmem i686 Debian squeeze/sid .. mail_plugins: readonly .. I have a requirement to have read-only to a mailbox. I have been researching through the wiki, the mailing list archives and good old Google. There was a number of similar questions with no real definitive answer. Option 1: ACL This can work, but not if the mailbox(s) can change without you knowing how. I.E. a online read-only archive of someone else's mailbox. There is no wild-card or recursive ACL options. Rsync style backups don't allow for easy creation of custom ACL files per mailbox. Option 2: Read-only filesystem (Linux) This seems easy, but it's not. 1) how do you update your archive? I tried with a bind mount, this does not let you set the 'ro' option *directly*. You must then use "-o remount,ro" to get your read-only bind mount. This is a little messy (needs custom init scripts for mounting on boot), but do-able. 2) Dovecot needs write access to CONTROL and INDEX files. This lead me to using the "CONTROL" and "INDEX" options on the mail_locaiton. Setting these to the original 'rw' mount and the rest to my 'ro' bind mount. Again, messy but do-able. 3) Clients try to move messages from 'new' to 'cur' for Maildir. Every time I opened a maildir I got an error per mail (dovecot log) about read-only filesysem as the client was trying to set the Seen flag and dovecot was trying to move the 'new' mail to the 'cur' folder. My test client, mutt, has a 'read_only' option when connecting. This eliminates this issue, but I cannot get everyone to use this archive with a correctly configured mutt. This sent me looking for 'read only' options in other clients. I could hardly find any. I noted that mutt send an EXAMINE and not a SELECT to open the mailbox when in read_only mode and this set me thinking about doing this in another way. Option 3: Dovecot Plugin I started looking into the dovecot plugins. Being more a systems administrator than developer I have cobbled together a working plugin. It nearly does what I want, but not quite, and I don't know why. NOTE: I no longer use the setup that I had to test Options 1 and 2. I thought that this plugin can either be used server-wide or with the 'mail_plugins' userdb option. The plugin forces the MAILBOX_OPEN_READONLY flag in a mailbox_open() call. The plugin returns an error for all mailbox_create() calls. Testing in mutt: - I am unable to delete a mail - I am unable to create a new folder So far so good. However: - I am able to move/copy a mail to an *existing* mailbox (note, the move operation makes the copy but fails to set the 'delete' flag) I do not understand why this works. I have been grep-ing through the source of dovecot and the plugins to find some answer, but without luck. Attached is the full source to my plugin and the Makefile (adapted from Johannes Berg's antispam plugin Makefile) When finished, I will be happy to release this to the dovecot community under the GPL/LGPL or whatever. [Dovecot] Live Mirror dovecot / OS X 10.6.4

I want to set up mirrored postfix/dovecot servers using two mac mini servers (OSX 10.6.4) located in different locations (Canada and the US to be specific) for redundancy. The idea is to have one as the primary MX ("mail.corp.com") and the other as the secondary ("webmail.corp.com"). If the primary goes down clients would revert to webmail until the primary is back up. The plan is to use rsync for this. My challenge, however, is what all I need to rsync to have a "live" backup. Rsync for backup isn't an issue, but I will need to rsync users (system and virtual). Anyone have experience with this? So far it seems that apple puts things in lots of non-standard locations. I suppose I could to a blanket rsync on /var, but that seems a bit much. [Dovecot] Messages causing an error from Solr.

Hi, I am trying to use the fts_solr plugin, and having some success. Unfortunately some spam messages I had lying around generate an error from Solr, e.g.: HTTP/1.1 400 ParseError at [row,col]:[5,29] Message: An invalid XML character (Unicode: 0xd84e) was found in the element content of the document. While I assume that these messages do indeed contain bad unicode, my searches seem to hang when they get an error back from Solr, causing other problems, so it would be nice if these messages did not cause an error from Solr. I isolated some of these messages and have attached them. I hope that the problematic characters come through properly. I have more messages that cause this problem (sometimes with difference unicode codepoints than the one in the message above), but I don’t want to clog the list up. I'm currently trying to set up a Dovecot 2.0.0 server for backup purposes. There's an existing server which I successfully migrated to Dovecot 2.0.0, and it uses LDAP for authentication. For the backup server, which will not be exposed to users, I tried both PAM and PASSWD authentication, but all I are syslog entries like these: dovecot: imap-login: Login: user=<foo>, method=PLAIN, rip=[...], lip=[...], mpid=20059, TLS dovecot: imap(foo): Error: user foo: Couldn't drop privileges: Mail access not allowed for root dovecot: imap(foo): Error: Internal error occurred. [Dovecot] Over-quota bounces seeming to lack sender

We're seeing an issue with 1.2.12 where over-quota rejection messages are appearing in the logs with <> as the sender. The sender of the original message sees the appropriate sender (postmaster@) on the rejection, but as the message makes its way through the postfix/amavis chain, I can see that the sender address is missing. Hello, having difficulty setting up a 'secure-only' service on a non-standard port. Objective is to open a secure Dovecot service on an internet-visible port, while also using an insecure service for hosts on an internal network (so that one particular client which is not SSL/TLS-capable can continue to use the service). Checking wiki1 and wiki2, I think that port 143 can be used for a service in both encrypted and unencrypted operations. (Wiki2 describes how port 143 can be used with or without STARTTLS.) I've managed to run both TB/Vista, and KMail/Debian on 143 from local machines, and they seem to work fine. (Though they do only work if the clients are set to use 'unencrypted logins' such as KMail's 'clear text' setting, and TB's 'don't use secure authentication'.) Dovecot's SSL certificate on the server expires in 2028. But I cannot get my 'secure-only service' working at all. I've chosen port 10943 for that service, and have been testing from both KMail on the server, and TB/Vista on another local machine. [Dovecot] Mobile phone client detects 'PUSH' server

Does Dovecot really provide a 'PUSH' email service? The mobile phone client (standard with SonyEricsson C510, in this case) reported that the server (our Dovecot installation) offered PUSH email service. I hadn't seen that in the documentation that I'd read and had understood the client-server protocol to be a client-PULL service, in that the clients decide which folders to retrieve, and check what messages there are and fetch any new messages. The clients we've used so far have settings for frequency of these checks. I didn't explore the option further, yet, being unsure whether there was a genuine PUSH service from our server or whether the phone was using a proxy somewhere (not ours) which would provide an intermediate fetch/aggregation/'pull then push' service of some sort - perhaps similar to the public offers from Yahoo etc. regards, Ron

I would like to set up an active-active fault tolerance couple of mail servers. Is the following procedure correct? Let's suppose I want to set up two servers for acme.com, mail1.acme.com and mail2.acme.com I declare both servers as MX in DNS configuration. Mailbox are stored in maildir with a single UID/GID owner for all the maildir files Userbase is MySQL, user tables are replicated using MySQL tools; in this case, the replica is one way, that is mail1.acme.com holds the "master" copy of MySQL tables and mail2.acme.com hold the "copy". The replica is done via dsync with a procedure like this executed on mail1.acme.com server: foreach mailbox { dsync mirror mailbox } Where mailbox is the full mail address, used also as a login name for authentication. My goal is to allow users to connect the mail servers they like and have all their mail (a 10/15 minute of sync delay is acceptable). This is the theory, now some questions. 1) Use Linux user/group owner of the files and directories are the same on both hosts (they are both foobar), but have different numeric ID, in one host foobat has UID 1234 and on the other host foobar has UID 2345. Is this an issue? 2) Mail location path is the same on both hosts, but where does dsync get it? Does dsync get all the information from the userbase defined in dovecot.conf (and other included files)? 3) Have I to scan the entire userbase and execute dsync for each user, or is there a trick to do for every user with a single command? 4) How often is good to run the synchronization? 5 minutes? 10? 15? 5) What is the correct command line to invoke dsync in this scenario? 6) Does anyone else tried this? :) Thank you. Hi all, first of all I am new to the list, so hello everyone :) I recently encountered an annoying problem with sieve, I am using dovecot version 1.2.13 on centos 5.5, the packages installed are the following: dovecot-sieve-0.1.17-5.el5 dovecot-managesieve-0.11.11-0_4.el5 dovecot-1.2.13-1_111.el5 the mail server is configured with virtual hosts (mysql), also the sieve plugin and managesieve are active. Users can create their own filters through roundcube and everything works fine. I also put two script to be executed before all sieve scripts in sieve_before, they just move any SPAM or VIRUS tagged message to a Junk folder. The problem is that while this works for my domain (that is also the server domain) it doesn't for the others domains, it seems the sieve_before scripts get ignored. I made many tests with the domains I am hosting, if I send a spam message (I am using the spamassassin test messages) it gets marked as SPAM, but gets only moved to the junk folder if the recipient is @cslash.net (that is my domain). here is some config extracts: === dovecot.conf === plugin { sieve = ~/.dovecot.sieve sieve_dir = ~/sieve sieve_before = /srv/mail/sieve-before sieve_after = /srv/mail/sieve-after } ======= /srv/mail $ cat sieve-before/spam.sieve require "fileinto"; if header :contains "X-Spam-Flag" "YES" { fileinto "Junk"; } P.S. Hi all, ok, I just instealled the dovecot 2.0.0 release, and the latest mercurial pigeonhole source. All is well, except for a particular sieve rule that may not be working right. It is a simple rule that looks like this : require ["fileinto","imap4flags"]; # rule:[Past Due Notices] if allof (header :contains "Subject" "Account Past Due Notice") { fileinto "Billing"; setflag "\\Seen"; stop; } Anyways, what happens is the message that matches that rule does indeed get moved to the "Billing" folder, but it does not get marked as read. BUT! if I change the order of the actions to mark it as read first, then move it to the "Billing" folder, it does both of those actions... Is that the way it is supposed to work? or is that a bug? Ladies and gentlemen, good morning! With my first post to the list, may I begin by saying how impressed I have been by Dovecot's performance on our Debian server. We've configured it to run with Exim and Fetchmail, using Dovecot to manage professional and domestic emails for a small home office, serving a number of Windows and Linux clients both on the internal network and, when working overseas, via SSH tunnels back to the Debian server. Dovecot's performance has been, simply, rock-solid; a very impressive piece of work by Timo and all those supporting him. My ordinary mobile phone - a Sony Ericsson C510 - includes an email client with IMAP capability (and none, TLS, or SSL encryption). Configured to access our server across the mobile carrier's network, the results surprised me; they were not what I expected. The first surprise was, it worked. More seriously, the messages it retrieved were not what I expected; the phone received around 58 messages, but from the 'inbox', the 'junk' box, and a couple from a 'project' box. I had expected to only retrieve the messages that were in the 'inbox'. How does Dovecot 'decide' what messages to give the phone client? [I think I may have the wrong 'mental model' of what should have happened, and would appreciate being put right.] Is it possible to configure Dovecot to only serve specific boxes? The mobile phone client is extremely simple - it does not have the facility to 'browse' the folders, it only has an inbox, sentbox, etc; I have wondered whether there might be a 'jar' email client that is richer, and which might help - I will look for something anyway. But I was impressed that my mobile phone could check our home and office email while offsite; if I can get that working it will save having to fire up the laptop at each opportunity. [Dovecot] Director mailserver health monitoring script

Timo et al; The last bit of functionality that the Dovecot director is missing compared to our existing load balancers is mailserver health monitoring. As I understand it, if a mailserver goes down, Dovecot does not take any action to route connections around the offline node, and will keep trying to proxy clients to it. Since we're hoping to cut over to Directors soon, but don't want to lose any functionality, I've hacked up a script that: * Polls the local director for a list of mailservers * Performs health checks against a list of ports on each mailserver * Disables or enables mailservers (by altering the vhost count) as necessary I've published the script on github in hopes that it might be useful to others: http://github.com/brandond/poolmon/ Maybe someday Dovecot will do something like this internally and I won't need the script any more, but for now I'm pretty happy with it. -Brad

I've tried unsubscribing and deleting the p1-ctl p1-idx dir structures The same problem occured ( This hapens in the users own Maildir ) Your help will be appreciated Regards Harry

[Dovecot] Disable APOP challenge in POP3 login greeting

Timo, It looks like Dovecot 2.0 appends an APOP challenge to the POP3 greeting even if APOP is not an enabled auth mechanism. Is there any way to disable this? We don't support APOP, and the challenge includes the private hostname of the server, which we'd rather not have in the banner. It looks like get_apop_challenge in 1.2 returns NULL if APOP isn't supported, which causes auth_client_ready to omit the banner... but I see no such check (in fact, no way for get_apop_challenge to return NULL) in 2.0, even though pop3_client_send_greeting tests for it. Hi everyone, I'm using Postfix and Dovecot with dovecot-lda used for local delivery. I've successfully migrated from 1.2.13 to 2.0.0 however I have a little problem with dovecot-lda logging. With version 1.2.13, I use to log dovecot-lda to /var/log/dovecot-lda.log with world-writable mode. With version 2.0.0, postfix complains: "Can't open log file /var/log/dovecot.log: permission denied". This is understandable because my dovecot.log file is 0600 mode. My question is how do I retain the 1.2.13 functionality of logging dovecot-lda to /var/log/dovecot-lda.log. I've read the LDA.txt in the wiki documentation and it states I can override log_path & info_log_path like this: protocol lda { log_path = /var/log/dovecot-lda.log info_log_path = /var/log/dovecot-lda.log } What I don't know is where to add that segment. Should I add it to 10-logging.conf or 15-lda.conf? Right now I've added that to both the files but I still see the postfix permission denied message. I will appreciate if someone can help out. >From a "Standards" thread I saw this : "Linux should be as easy as Windows" I would like to point out that this is a thinking problem. A shift in thinking is required. That should say : "Open source and Free software should be as easy as Windows" In this way we allow someone running BSD, Solaris or some port of Debian to an old Dec AlphaServer will have the same level of functionality provided standards are adhered to. Once programmers begin to see everything in the light of Linux then we can also kiss goodbye the opportunity for portability to other OS types. Dennis

[Dovecot] Pigeonhole: error while loading shared libraries

Hi, I built pigeonhole from the hg repo for Dovecot 2.0. Local sieve scripts work fine. But as soon as I try to connect via managesieve I get this errror: managesieve-login: Error: dovecot/managesieve-login: error while loading shared libraries: libdovecot-login.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory My dovecot install is in /usr/lib/dovecot and I had to symlink the libs in the dovecot folder to /usr/lib to make managesieve work. My configure options were: "--prefix=/usr --with-dovecot=/usr/lib/dovecot" Sebastian -- The best thing about a boolean is even if you are wrong, you are only off by a bit.

Hi, We're having some issues with certain messages not being able to be read by Dovecot. Can anyone tell me under what conditions the error messages below could be caused? [Dovecot] rare index cache error with dovecot 1.2.10

Hi, since some time for a single user updating the Maildir/dovecot.index.cache file produced errors whenever it needed to be updated: Aug 15 04:16:40 imapsrv dovecot: deliver(user): pwrite() failed: File too large Aug 15 04:16:40 imapsrv dovecot: deliver(user): file_set_size() failed with index cache file /var/spool/mail/mamuzic/Maildir/dovecot.index.cache: File too large The file itself was 55115776 bytes and a test program using pwrite with any reasonable size or offset does not produce the EFBIG error. Looking to the file contents the start of the file looks correct to me ( according to src/lib-index/mail-cache-private.h ) and despite of the error message the file gets updated and contains always the headers of the most recent incoming mail near the end of the file. After removing the file the cache was rebuilt properly (currently at 9MB). As this happened only for a single user out of approx 500 and after more than one year of using dovecot without any other problems I guess this is a very rare case. As pwrite tests do not show the error this seems not to be an issue with low file limits (as suggested in another mail on this topic) but maybe a lookup of corrupt addresses from the index.cache. I have saved the dovecot.index.cache, but as it is rather large (55MB) and does contain a lot of privacy information I would rather not make it accessible.
