[Dovecot] Outlook problem when deleting mails

Hi, I'm seeking advice to solve the following "mystery": I set up an IMAP server on Ubuntu 10.04 (dovecot 1.2.9). It appears to work fine apart from one problem. A colleague is running Outlook 2007 on Vista and sometimes (sometimes very often, sometimes only occasionally) when he wants to delete mails, Outlook hangs for some time (he says about 1, 2 or 3 minutes) until it finally puts out a message box: "The server did not respond to this IMAP command before the connection was terminated" I have activated the outlook-idle workaround, but I learned that this doesn't do anything anymore, right? There's no error message in dovecot's logs. Could the error be related to the same time stamp? (I'm not yet sure, if it always happens this way if the error occurs) I also found "Disconnected in IDLE" for other users at other times, but no one other complained so far. [Dovecot] Dovecot MDA creates folders for nonexisting users

Hi, I have setup postfix and dovecot and set dovecot as the LDA.my issue is that it accepts mails for non existing users and creates folders for them. Otherwise all mail delivery works fine. im using mysql for authentication. I do not see any error messages on my mail.log too. Thnks jay

[Dovecot] (Single instance) attachment storage with single-dbox

Just a note to myself and whoever else cares, should be added to wiki once it has its own page about this: With single-dbox messages can be copied with hard linking. This means that there can be multiple files that point to the same attachment file. The attachment is now deleted only once the mail file's link count drops to zero, so this works fine.. ..until someone goes and starts manually copying files or maybe restoring from backups or whatever, causing the hard links to be replaced with separate files having link count=1, even when there are other files pointing to the same attachment file. Now deleting this one mail will delete the attachment too early. I can't think of any other reasonable way to handle this though, so unless someon has some great ideas, I think the solution is to simply add enough warnings that message store shouldn't be accessed directly. Maybe add some import/export commands to doveadm which can be used to add a bunch of mails to storage without doing it directly on filesystem.

Thanks to Timo, I have solved all but one of my problems. For back ground, I am using Samba4 as an AD. I have the userdb working from LDAP just fine and kerberos authenetication for dovecot's IMAP server working fine. The problem is using dovecot's SASL with postfix. I also have plain/login working in imap and smtp. Both use pam_krb5 through pam to authenticate clients that don't have kerberos, and for now smtp. He all, I'm migrating a big system from Courier to Dovecot and we have a custom analyzer logger system to Courier logs. We have got the very similar specs on IMAP LOGIN log, but I can't get the Logout format. Courier write like that: ... imapd: LOGOUT, user=luism.martinez, ip=[::ffff:127.0.0.1], headers=0, body=0, rcvd=131, sent=632, time=0 ¿Is there any Variables on imap_logout_format to get headers, body and time vars?

At least, I have trouble in reading sieve-scripts with tools from kmail ("connection refused) or thunderbird (timed out: server does not answer). BSDI and Dovecot 2 solved. However some POP3 issues have popped up. 1) Outlook reate e-mail but not on Thunderbird. 2) AVG Proxy interferes with POP3. Hi, I've upgraded my Dovecot from 1.2 to 2.0.5. Everything is working fine on my Gentoo, also login with imaps and pop3s. But: I have in my config autocreate folders for new users. After creating a new user (with PostfixAdmin) I see in my logfile with SSL enabled this: imap-login: Warning: SSL alert: where=0x4004, ret=560: fatal unknown CA [127.0.0.1] With SSL-disable, autocreation folders for new users is no problem. I've searched a fiew days for a solution, but I did not find anything. Also dovecot-page what describes running SSL does not help me. [Dovecot] Backup recovery with mdbox

Hello I'm using mdbox for mail storage. I'd like to give users an option to recover backups into a new folder, say, Backup-$date. Is there a simple way to do this? Hi, pigeonhole/sieve check against dovecot's version comparing to what they have been built against. This means that whenever there is a minor version of dovecot released pigeonhole/sieve need to be rebuilt and then redistributed to users even if there is no need for it (I'm thinking of packaged versions of dovecot and dovecot-pigeonhole). Could the checks become ABI-version aware, so that rebuilds and redistribution are kept to a minimum? Timo, I'm working with a webmail client that periodically polls unread message counts for a list of folders. It currently does this by doing a LIST or LSUB and then iterating across all of the folders, running a SEARCH ALL UNSEEN, and counting the resulting UID list. Eventually I'd like to see it using RFC5819 LIST-EXTENDED, but that requires a fair bit of work. In the mean time I'm trying to speed up the existing iteration. I've got it working using 'STATUS "mailbox" (UNSEEN)', but the language in RFC3501 suggest that this may be slow. There is a counterproposal to use RFC4731 ESEARCH and do 'SELECT "MAILBOX"'; 'SEARCH RETURN (COUNT) UNSEEN'. >From an IMAP server perspective, which do you anticipate would be faster? >From a client perspective it seems like STATUS would be better since it involves less round-trips to the server and less output parsing, but given the warnings in the RFCs there is concern that it is in fact be more expensive. -Brad

If dovecot has tcpwrapper support and is compiled -DTCPWRAP then it can run as a standalone daemon and will consult the hosts.allow/deny files, no need for inetd of any type. man 3 hosts_access man 5 hosts_access for details on tuning. Tcpwrapper tuning is far more powerful than people realise.

[Dovecot] strange behavior with virtual accounts and imap

hi, I've recently setup new mailserver with dovecot and postfix. They use mysql and virtual accounts. All works perfectly except.. There is one group account named info, all the mail is forwarded to every other account. Users download their mail via Outlook (2003, 2007) with imap. If someone downloads email send to info and delete it after that. Outlook stoke the message and doesn't delete it immediately, thats normal. But if later someone else downloads his mail and it have received the same letter to info. The message appear as if it's already deleted by that user. But is supposed to be unreaded. I cant find any info why is this happening. Please help

Hi! I'm trying to set up SQL based dict quota. The quota is working, gets updated but I had to configure really loose file permission to make it work: dovecot.conf: dict { quota = pgsql:/etc/dovecot/dovecot_dict-sql.conf } service dict { unix_listener dict { mode = 0660 group = vmail # sidenote: I noticed that writing the number equivalent # of 'vmail' here does not work. Why? } } # ~ls -la /etc/dovecot/dovecot_dict-sql.conf -rw-r----- root vmail dovecot_dict-sql.conf # ~ls -la /var/dovecot/dict srw-rw---- root vmail /var/dovecot/dict= Every virtual user lookup returns a 'gid' field, and it is always 'vmail' (actually it is the number equivalent of 'vmail'). Despite that the imap process should run as the 'uid' and 'gid' values returned from the userdb, it can not read the dict config file: dovecot.log: dict: Error: Can't open configuration file /etc/dovecot/dovecot_dict-sql.conf: Permission denied dict: Error: Failed to initialize dictionary 'quota' lda(<username>): Error: read(/var/dovecot//dict) failed: Remote disconnected Now I must set o+r to the config file, which I really don't want to, given that it contains the db username and password. Strange thing is that the group r/w permission is enough for the dict= socket, and it doesn't need world-wide permissions at all. Hello, I've some trouble with my kmail (Version 1.13.5 / KDE 4.5.1, Kubuntu 10.04 and a dovecot-imap-server on debian etch (dovecot 1.0.rc15-2etch5). Everytime I try to create a folder under my imap-inbox, I get an error like "can't upload folder...", but after this message I can see a new folder under my inbox-folder, but I can't use it ... With a thundermail-client I can create a subfolder without any erro and I can use it r (but only first level). Hi, I'm trying to get old mail from /var/mail/<user>, where <user> is the (sometimes) huge mailfile, not a directory, converted to the maildir INBOX in ~/Maildir. Users have no ~/mail directory; they were supposed to use pop3 only. I'm trying the example from the wiki: plugin { convert_mail = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%n } but have still not succeded. I tried /var/mail/<user> where <user> is a file and /var/mail/<user>/<user> where user is first a diredtory en the second <user> a file. I also used the filename 'inbox', since the logging suggested that to me. Other logging seems to indicate that the right maildir++ info is composed. I'm in vor any advise! [Dovecot] Weird glitches with public folders - Dovecot not using per-user INDEX?

Hi I have this public folder: namespace { location = maildir:/home/_shared/projects:INDEX=~/Maildir/_shared prefix = shared. separator = . subscriptions = no type = public } Access is controlled by ACLs, everyone who has access is 'lrwstipek' except for some people who also have 'xa' privileges. As you can see it is set to put its index to the user's Maildir so they can have per-user \Seen flags. And that is the case -- most of the time anyway. But for some folders, and I can't figure out why those, they just don't work: if someone sets a message read it immediately becomes read for everyone else, too, and vice versa if someone marks a message unread, it becomes unread everywhere. Further investigation shows that in these problematic folders, indeed all users directly manipulate the flag of the email (i.e. X marks email Z read, ",S" appears immediatelly in the filename). Anyone knows what I'm doing wrong? I can't seem to find anything different with these problematic folders, ACLs look right etc. Thanks in advance, Tamas

I have modified my delivery agent to deposit files in my Maildir already containing custom flags. For example, x is appended for files that are sent from local users, y is for e-mails from Contacts and z is for e-mails from Whitelisted sources. A file will thus be delivered in the Maildir and be called something like: filename:2,yz Also in the Maildir I created a file called dovecot-keywords and have added these 3 flags in there as so: #cat dovecot-keywords 23 Local 24 InContacts 25 Whitelisted I went ahead and erased all the dovecot-uid* dovecot.index* files but Dovecot won't recognize the flags - furthermore, it labels z as 'unknown-25'! - for both old messages or new messages. First time I've seen this with dovecot-2.0.5. [Dovecot] Limit access to dovecot by domains?

Hi. Is there any way to limit access to dovecot by domains. I only need to give access to a well known set of domains, all from Australia and all networks are known and used either from people at home or mobile access (phones, laptops etc). iptables is not possible as e.g. OPTUS does not give away all of the networks mobile phones are connected to. I know some, but not all. It would be much nicer and easier to allow optusnet.com.au bigpond.com.au tpg.com.au and I have given 100% of our users access. I know there is an extra field called "allow_nets", I tried this and failed. I did a search and found that this only works with SQL? Maybe I could include a script that would check the reverse DNS record of a connected IP and then I could filter????? The problem is when doing doveadm stuff. I do not know ldap (learning as I go). I need to set the uid/guid to vmail (500 in this case if vmail can't be used). Any help would be greatly appreciated. I do not have sfu or rfc2xxx enabled as this requires changing things with Samba 4 that I would rather avoid at the moment. [Dovecot] Master user sees empty folder list

Hello, I'm having a "path" problem with master users. When logged on as a master user, I can't see the user's folders. I'm trying to use system users as master users, so I'm using something like this: # Master password auth_master_user_separator = * passdb { driver = passwd master = yes pass = yes } # System users passdb { driver = passwd } # Virtualusers users passdb { driver = passwd-file args = username_format=%n /etc/virtual/%d/passwd } mail_location = mdbox:~/mdbox System and virtual users see their folders fine, including the shared namespaces, but as a master user, I see an empty mailbox. I've turned on debugging and watched things like root= and fs= and they're normal. Permissions should be OK since the system user has the same uid:gid as the virtual user. What could it be? This only happens with messages, which over-quota user limit. [Dovecot] "doveadm mailbox create" oddities

Hi to all! I’m trying to understand the usage of "doveadm mailbox create”. If I do, as root: # doveadm mailbox create -u __public__ sys/test doveadm(__public__): Error: Can't create mailbox sys/test: Permission denied but if I do: # doveadm mailbox create -u __public__ test every thing is OK. “sys" is a shared maildir folder, that is visible in the client as "#Public/sys”. __public__ is the user that owns Public folders, here is the complete details: userdb: __public__ uid : 10002 gid : 8 home : /var/mail/domainname/__public__ mail : maildir:~/maildir:INBOX=~/maildir/INBOX:LAYOUT=fs:INDEX=~/indexes/ Do I have to add root with proper permissions to ACL? Hi, I'm trying to convert mailboxes from mbox zu mdbox. The following command was performed: dsync mirror -u tsdauche mbox:~/.NCmail/Drafts dsync(tsdauche): Fatal: execvp(-u) failed: No such file or directory dsync(tsdauche): Panic: file dsync-worker-local.c: line 185 (dsync_drop_extra_namespaces): assertion failed: (ns != NULL) [1] Abort trap (core dumped) dsync mirror -u tsdauche mbox:~/.NCmail/Drafts I also tried other combinations with dsync, but they all fail... :( I'm sending the core file and the conf output with this mail. We had to move our dovecot from one server to another and used rsync to move the mail but it took us some time.. [Dovecot] Dovecot chgrp actions on new files/folders

Timo, I did further study of the user/group permissions. Applying the below patch will make no difference to virtually everyone out there. Those that have default uid/gid ownership won't see any change as the gid already matches so the fchown() action won't be attempted. Those that have sgid will still see the normal expected fchown() enforced by the kernel which becomes a duplicated action by dovecot. In the last case, those with an unknown 3rd party gid were used to seeing fchown() failures and those will now go away. It is only this third group that will see anything change as all other cases are already handled. Anyone who wishes to create new files with another group ID should make their directories sgid or stgid as per normal filesystem ACL semantics. The original net effect of this only turns on an fchown() that will fail and emit numerous error messages. This patch fixes that. Technically the fchown is unneccessary extra code already since any directory that is sgid or stgid will have ownership enforced by the kernel already. [Dovecot] lazy_expunge and moving messages

Hello, testing the lazy_expunge plugin (with 2.0.5), I realized the following effect, which users may not expect/understand: As moving messages from one folder to another has to be done by clients with the IMAP command sequence COPY STORE EXPUNGE, every moved message is also put into the "shadow folder" of the source folder. Maybe it's possible to extend the plugin to optionally hook into the COPY operation, remember it somewhere with the message (simply as special/ configurable IMAP flag?), and then really expunge messages with this flag set. What do you think? I haven't looked into the plugin interface yet. Of course, if a user manually copies a message and deletes the source message later (maybe having the copy deleted inbetween...), the consequence may not be expected either... [Dovecot] limits to serve sure a number of users

Hi, lets say dovcot should serve 1000 user (only imaps) without rejecting a users connection because of to short resources. With version 1.x I had to increase login_max_processes_count = ... With 2.x I'm not sure which parameters I have to set. So Thunderbird 3.x has a default value of 5 connections to cache. "dovadm who" shows quite often 5 connections: userx 5 imap (11154 11152 11158 11156 11150) ... So dovecot has to be configured for 5000 connections/imap-login's? Within 10-master.conf these defaults are shown #default_process_limit = 100 #default_client_limit = 1000 Is it right process_limit is not generally a problem because oldest imap-login process(?) will be closed? (With this expected number of users this value should be increased too.) But what about client_limit? Does it has to be increased to 5000? Hello, I have a question about userdb lookup when using expire-tool. Dovecot version 1.2.15 In dovecot.conf, mail_location = maildir:/var/mail/%u:INDEX=/var/indexes/%u I run dovecot expire-tool, target user's directory becomes executing user's one. According to wiki, userdb setting overrides mail_location. userdb passwd { mail=maildir:/var/mail/%u:INDEX=/var/indexes/%u } With this setting, it seems working. But, there are no examples with ":INDEX=.." setting. Is this syntax right? Regards

[Dovecot] Dovecot 2.0 lock upgrade assertion failure

Hi! I've now seen this assertion failure from lmtp (most frequent), pop3 (next frequent), and imap (rarely). It didn't start happening until the number of accounts on the server was increased into the 10k-25k range. It happens when index->file_lock is a read lock and mail_index_lock is called asking for a write lock. Dovecot 2.x dies at the assertion on line 62 of mail-index-lock.c If that assertion were removed, it would likely die at the assertion on line 80. Looking at the mail-index-lock.c from dovecot 1.2.15, it looks like the 1.2 series would enter the else case of the "kind of kludgy" block, and end up calling file_lock_try_update(), which seems like what needs to happen. I have a folder created in dovecot entered by the user as "ññoéé" On the file system it appears as "&APEA8Q-o&AOkA6Q-" (mUTF7) When creating a sieve rule, to file into the folder ññoéé, I am converting the name from UTF8 into UTF7, the rule becomes require ["fileinto"]; if header :contains ["From"] "user(a)domain.com" { fileinto "&APEA8Q-o&AOkA6Q-"; } however when executed, a sieve log is generated saying: failed to store into mailbox '&APEA8Q-o&AOkA6Q-' (&-APEA8Q-o&-AOkA6Q-): Mailbox doesn't exist: &-APEA8Q-o&-AOkA6Q-. If I directly modify the sieve file and place the actual utf8 version of the folder in it require ["fileinto"]; if header :contains ["From"] "user(a)domain.com" { fileinto "ññoéé"; } I get the following error: main_script: line 1: error: folder name specified for fileinto command is not utf-8: ññoéé.

I believe I have uncovered an Outlook bug. I've searched on the Internet a bit but I didn't find much on this particular topic. Basically it seems that Outlook (I'm using 2007) is overwriting message flags at least when replying to messages. I have seen the following behavior in the dovecot logs, first for only viewing a message, second when replying to a message. urfh UID STORE 65998 +FLAGS (\Seen) 3fxj IDLE DONE ejm4 UID STORE 65998 FLAGS (\Seen \Answered) The second STORE effectively wipes out any other flags on the message and replaces them with \Seen & \Answered I tried the same operation in Thunderbird and it performs properly. Anyone else encountered this bug ? Anyone knows if it's fixed in 2010 ?

Hi! I'm running Postfix 2.2.9 as MTA. I have several mail clients , such as Outlook 2000/xp/2007. The clients comunicate to the MTA using pop3/smtp protocols. I have also installed Webmail Squirrel for the internet users. Squirrel needs an Imap server, so i have utilized Dovecot 1.2.6. To authenticate users , i use pam_winbbind to validate users to my NT domain. Here is my problem : Today i checked my /var/log/mail log and this took my attention : Sep 29 08:25:07 host1 dovecot: imap-login: Login: user=<USER>, method=PLAIN, rip=172.20.22.12, lip=172.20.22.14 Sep 29 08:25:07 host1 dovecot: IMAP(user): mail_location: mbox: mkdir(/home/NT-DOMAIN/user/mail) failed: Permission denied (euid=10188(user) egid=10001(domain users) missing +w perm: /home) Sep 29 08:25:07 host1 dovecot: IMAP(user): Fatal: Namespace initialization failed Here , i assume the user put his user name in CAPS (USER), and that i generating an error. Then Dovecot tries to create the directory /home/NT-DOMAIN/user/mail. I am adjusting the recommended ldap configuration to match active directory instead of the standard posixaccount layout. The problem is that doveadm seems to ignore mail_uid and mail_gid along with (possibly) mail_location. This is a setup with all virtual users (all ldap, not system accounts). Everything works in postfix and standard dovecot operation, it is only doveadm which doesn't work. Ldap queries return everything but these entries (as they do not exist in AD). These items I have tried setting in the configuration and in environment variables. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. [Dovecot] Why deliver+usercheck? deliver+MTA?

Hi, I successfully configured dovecot using virtual users (and LDAP/AD). deliver is the LDA and verifies if the user exists (as recommended in the WIKI). However, the howtos in the Wiki say *nothing* about the case that the recipients should be verified *before* receiving the messages (prevent backscatter, ...). All configurations in the dovecot-Wiki (postfix and exim) just accept the mails and pass them to deliver. Also, all howtos which I found on the web. If the user does not exist, the mail is bounced because the mail was already accepted by the MTA. Nowadays this is an unacceptable configuration! Is there a special reason why there is no discussion about this? However, as postfix seems to be really too unflexible I have set up exim to handle incoming mail and do the usercheck in the router (with an LDAP query). But now the user is doubled-checked: Once when receiving with exim and a second time in deliver. This is not necessary, so I guess I can disable the LDAP query for deliver and set up a static userdb. Why does the Wiki recommened to verfify with deliver when the user needs to be checked at the MTA anyway? Regards, Luke

[Dovecot] Pigeonhole feature request: automatically copy sieve_global_path (default script) to user's sieve_dir

We have used the great managesieve you have merged together, with sieve, to create pigeonhole. However, when a user creates a custom script through a GUI of ours, the default, as we expected, would be ignored. Maybe you could add a retain_sieve_global=yes|no setting OR be more complex by having the sieve_global_dir copied to the users sieve_dir on first managesieve script save, if another setting to do this was set to yes. This way the administrators can create a skeleton directory and the users can retain the default skeleton settings. Maybe, in the future, you can do, just like the master auth for logging into users' imap accounts, you could have the master=yes allow login to each user's managesieve. Just some suggestions but, until a new feature comes around, I will have a cron job or a imap-login script do the trick. Timo has said that you are a separate developer from dovecot. SoI had a hell of a time converting my qmail install to dovecot 2.0.5, so I thought I'd pass on what I learned. 1. When using vpopmail, do not use " --disable-many-domains". If you do, you'll need to recompile vpopmail without that setting and use the script found at http://qmailrocks.thibs.com/downloads/scripts/migrate-vpopmail-many-domains to collapse the tables. 2. Switch to mysql authentication. [Dovecot] Dovecot Version 1.2.12 Slow IMAP LIST Question

We are using Dovecot 1.2.12, FreeBSD 8.1 Stable, & SquirrelMail 1.4.21 Our problem is that SquirrelMail works fine inside our Network, but from the outside SquirrelMail times out before it can display the inbox contents. SquirrelMail times out for everyone, all of the time. In troubleshooting we have observed the following: >From the inside, if I telnet into Dovecot IMAP and issue ? LIST "" "*" I get an instant list of my folders. If I do the above from the outside, the LIST command slowly lists 10 - 15 entries and stops, then pauses for what seems to be 30 seconds to a minute, then lists another 10 - 15 entries. After about 5 minutes of this it finally times out. An interesting note is, when it stops listing and pauses, it doesn't stop at the end of a line (folder entry), it stops half way through a line entry. For example, say the folder entry is mailfolder/folder1/folder2, when it stops I see mailfolder/fol I don't think this is a SquirrelMail issue because of the IMAP LIST problem. We have turned on debugging, but the logs really don't show much, just the timeout. Can anyone offer additional troubleshooting to help us track down this issue? Thanks

The man pages of "man deliver" do not explain the "-n" option which is confusing a lot of people as to why mailboxes and mail folders aren't being automatically created; yet, the dovecot wiki's both say to use "-n" in postfix's master.cf which keeps dovecot's lda from automatically creating the folders. People are pulling hair over this! The default should be to not use -n as most will want their directories automatically created. Hello all, Although i'm aware that version 1.0.15 is rather old, that's what is used in Lenny, so... Either way, the setup is rather simple, regular dovecot install, with maildirs residing on a "local" ext3 filesystem accessed through FC to a SAN (2Gbps link). The server has 2 cores (with HT), so "almost" 4 cores and 3GB of ram. A couple weeks ago we had a major number of account migrations, from POP to IMAP. We started to notice that in times of peaks, specially after lunch hour, dovecot started to get REALLY slow and closing client connections. A restart to the service was enough to get things working again. Firstly i thought about the max fd number per process, but after checking it turned out it was already rather large, 8192 in our case. I cannot observe any concerning I/O load either. Besides upgrading, are there any suggestions? Hi all, I'm using dovecot-1.2.15 and NFS as storage of Maildir . When I try over IMAP and Evolution to move a mail to another Imap Folder, a file like .nfs000000000159816c0000245 is created and when move operation is finished, the file is deleted. Sometimes, this file isn't deleted and then, you can see a new imap folder called .nfs000000000159816c0000245 when you restart your Evolution or another Imap Client. Is this file created by dovecot? maybe, must dovecot delete this file on login? I think thats is easy fix this with a Post-Login script but I think that dovecot must delete it

Hi, I've recently started using dovecot-lda to handle my local maildir deliveries from Exim. Unfortunately I've been experiencing the occasional failed delivery - My Exim logs were showing: Child process of virtual_dovecot_delivery transport (running command "/usr/local/libexec/dovecot/dovecot-lda -d $local_part@$domain -f $sender_address -a $original_local_part@$original_domain") was terminated by signal 11 (Segmentation fault) I originally thought a specific mail was causing the crash, but calling the command myself delivered the mail without any issues. [Dovecot] migrate machines and upgrade

I am about to be migrating mail servers and have a few questions. First a little background: Old mail server: Fedora 11 dovecot-1.2.11-3.fc11.x86_64 installed from yum repo mbox mail format OpenLDAP authentication 250+ users New mail server: Fedora 13 dovecot-2.0.1-1_118.fc13.x86_64 installed from atrpm rpm file Maildir mail format OpenLDAP authentication 250+ users I plan to use dsync on the new machine to migrate the mail off the old machine and mbox format to the new machine and Maildir. I think I read where I can do the migration without interfering with normal mail delivery and then when i get ready to do the final move I just kill dovecot on the old machine, dsync once more, and start the service on the new machine. What would be the best way to accomplish this? And as for the configuration changed between 1.2.11 and 2.0.1, where to start? I see there is now a conf.d directory for 2.0.1. How will this tie in to the 1.2.11 config? Any pointers there? Other option is to move the mbox mail as it sits to the new machine, install 1.2.X branch dovecot on new machine, and let the convert plugin do all the work. However I like the idea of the dsync doing the sync with minimal downtime. Thanks in advance. -- Donny B.

Hi all, I'm sure my issues are a result of misconfiguration, but I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I'm getting pressure to move us back to GroupWise, which I desperately want to avoid :-/ We're running dovecot 1.2.9 on Ubuntu 10.4 LTS+postfix. The server is a VM with 1 vCPU and 4GB of RAM. We serve about 10,000 users with anywhere from 500-1000 logged in at any one time. Messages are stored in Maildir format on two NFS servers (one for staff, the other for students). Today I implemented the "High performance" setup described here: http://wiki.dovecot.org/NFS (mainly moving indexes off of NFS, since I'm only using the one server). I also added imapproxy to our webmail client server (SOGo). The vast majority of our users come in over the web. We currently see load averages spiking into the 20-30 range. When this happens, service crawls to a near standstill, and ultimately the SOGo client starts crashing out. I'm wondering if anything jumps out at anybody here - feel free to mock if/when you find an obvious configuration problem. Hi! Two days ago I upgraded to 1.2.15, and again I the warning "Warning: fd limit 1024 is lower than what Dovecot can use under full load" reappeared. It's a bit weird, because my actual limits are higher. Hi Timo, just to report that . dovecot-1.2.12 which ran fine for several month . on FreeBSD 7.2-STABLE (/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC amd64) . using Maildir (mailboxes, control and indexes on NFS) has crashed this morning on our server. Hello I'm using authentication via SQL, and I'm storing the full mail_location in the database. This is a long string because we're using multiple partitions and hashing to create this path. It looks like this: # doveadm user andre=sneakymustard.com userdb: andre=sneakymustard.com password : $1$ixW87UeD$fLhORaJS0c5wNFmWqfJdI1 mail : mdbox:/var/spool/imap/partition7/11/andre=sneakymustard.com:INDEX=/var/lib/… quota_rule: *:bytes=1024M Depending on the user's email, this string can be even longer. What I've noticed is that it is truncated when it reaches 128 bytes. Could this size limit be increased? Thanks, Andre

I am building dovecot-2.0-pigeonhole-0.2.1 (dovecot-2.0.5, but that does not matter) with dovecot-config in place (in /usr/lib64/dovecot) on a 64bit Linux (RHEL5): ./configure --with-dovecot=/usr/lib64/dovecot The libs needed for several executables in libexec such as /usr/libexec/dovecot/managesieve-login are not installed in /usr/lib64 but in /usr/lib64/dovecot. Therefore the executable will fail to run: ldd /usr/libexec/dovecot/managesieve-login libdovecot-login.so.0 => not found libdovecot.so.0 => not found librt.so.1 => /lib64/librt.so.1 (0x00000032e9600000) libc.so.6 => /lib64/libc.so.6 (0x00000032e8200000) libpthread.so.0 => /lib64/libpthread.so.0 (0x00000032e8e00000) /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x00000032e7e00000) To me this looks like a bug in the generated Makefile. I could easily fix that by providing the library path for the loader or by symlinks in /usr/lib64, but this is a workaround only. [Dovecot] migration 1.2.5 -> 2.0.5 load increased dramatically

During norml operation this morning we're seeing a significantly increased load on the IMAP server (factor 5, from 5 to 25). Does dovecot need to rebuild index files or perform other IO intensive operations after the upgrade? We're using Maildir Our monitoring shows increased "system" time. Hi all, We are migrating a mail service with 80.000 users, and 40.000 of them are using IMAP. At present, this service is handled by Courier, with some custom patches. And we are migrating to Dovecot 1.2.15. One of these patches is used to interact with Spamassassin. If Courier detects any move/copy operation to the "IsSPAM" or "IsntSPAM" folders, a specific bash script is executed like IsSPAM.sh and IsntSPAM.sh These scripts do the following: IsSPAM.sh 1. Takes user as parameter USER. 2. Retrieves the homeDirectory of USER from ldap, using ldapsearch. 3. Executes /usr/bin/sa-learn --spam ... with IsSPAM folder IsntSPAM.sh 1. Takes user as parameter USER. 2. Retrieves the homeDirectory of USER from ldap, using ldapsearch. 3. Executes /usr/bin/sa-learn --ham ... with IsntSPAM folder 4. Moves all content from IsntSPAM to INBOX I think that it shouldn't be very hard to implement a plugin to detect MOVE/COPY events to specified folders, and to execute specified scripts on detection. Is there already such a plugin for dovecot 1.2.15?

[Dovecot] How to add the missing maildir folders

Hi fellow list members, What would be the best way to add the .Sent,.Draft, etc. folders to the maildir tree? It seems not Dovecots task to do that but of the MUA. I have seen several options. Use of skel but that works only for new system users. I have only virtual users preloaded in a database. I've discoverred that ONLY Roundcube add the folders (if configured to do that) but I've not been able to have the folders created by Thunderbird. Yes, you can manage the subscribtions to folders but there is no way to create them. I did not bother to try Outlook... MY users use pop3, imap and web (Roundcube) but I cannot ask them to use Roundcube first, just to create the folders. I have no such thing as maildrop, which seems to be able to create folders. greetings, i'd like to ask for a certain feature request. dovecot:maildir_uidlist_recreate() to set the gid of new files based on the parent directory group ownership and normally that's desired, an appropriate security method. on our server, we use directory permissions to more stringently isolate access between users and services. we have three group ids used for this, and i'll use my name as example.
