Hi, I've recently started using dovecot-lda to handle my local maildir deliveries from Exim. Unfortunately I've been experiencing the occasional failed delivery - My Exim logs were showing: Child process of virtual_dovecot_delivery transport (running command "/usr/local/libexec/dovecot/dovecot-lda -d $local_part@$domain -f $sender_address -a $original_local_part@$original_domain") was terminated by signal 11 (Segmentation fault) I originally thought a specific mail was causing the crash, but calling the command myself delivered the mail without any issues. [Dovecot] migrate machines and upgrade

I am about to be migrating mail servers and have a few questions. First a little background: Old mail server: Fedora 11 dovecot-1.2.11-3.fc11.x86_64 installed from yum repo mbox mail format OpenLDAP authentication 250+ users New mail server: Fedora 13 dovecot-2.0.1-1_118.fc13.x86_64 installed from atrpm rpm file Maildir mail format OpenLDAP authentication 250+ users I plan to use dsync on the new machine to migrate the mail off the old machine and mbox format to the new machine and Maildir. I think I read where I can do the migration without interfering with normal mail delivery and then when i get ready to do the final move I just kill dovecot on the old machine, dsync once more, and start the service on the new machine. What would be the best way to accomplish this? And as for the configuration changed between 1.2.11 and 2.0.1, where to start? I see there is now a conf.d directory for 2.0.1. How will this tie in to the 1.2.11 config? Any pointers there? Other option is to move the mbox mail as it sits to the new machine, install 1.2.X branch dovecot on new machine, and let the convert plugin do all the work. However I like the idea of the dsync doing the sync with minimal downtime. Thanks in advance. -- Donny B.

Hello, I reported a while back that it wasn't possible to compile the whole of Dovecot using gcc 4.5.2 and the new gold linker, but it's now working with recent snapshots of both binutils and GCC. Cheers, Olivier

[Dovecot] Significant performance problems

Hi all, I'm sure my issues are a result of misconfiguration, but I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I'm getting pressure to move us back to GroupWise, which I desperately want to avoid :-/ We're running dovecot 1.2.9 on Ubuntu 10.4 LTS+postfix. The server is a VM with 1 vCPU and 4GB of RAM. We serve about 10,000 users with anywhere from 500-1000 logged in at any one time. Messages are stored in Maildir format on two NFS servers (one for staff, the other for students). Today I implemented the "High performance" setup described here: http://wiki.dovecot.org/NFS (mainly moving indexes off of NFS, since I'm only using the one server). I also added imapproxy to our webmail client server (SOGo). The vast majority of our users come in over the web. We currently see load averages spiking into the 20-30 range. When this happens, service crawls to a near standstill, and ultimately the SOGo client starts crashing out. I'm wondering if anything jumps out at anybody here - feel free to mock if/when you find an obvious configuration problem. Hi! Two days ago I upgraded to 1.2.15, and again I the warning "Warning: fd limit 1024 is lower than what Dovecot can use under full load" reappeared. It's a bit weird, because my actual limits are higher. Hi Timo, just to report that . dovecot-1.2.12 which ran fine for several month . on FreeBSD 7.2-STABLE (/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC amd64) . using Maildir (mailboxes, control and indexes on NFS) has crashed this morning on our server. I found nothing special in the logfile. Attached are dovecot -n output and a gdb backtrace of the core file. Hello I'm using authentication via SQL, and I'm storing the full mail_location in the database. This is a long string because we're using multiple partitions and hashing to create this path. It looks like this: # doveadm user andre=sneakymustard.com userdb: andre=sneakymustard.com password : $1$ixW87UeD$fLhORaJS0c5wNFmWqfJdI1 mail : mdbox:/var/spool/imap/partition7/11/andre=sneakymustard.com:INDEX=/var/lib/… quota_rule: *:bytes=1024M Depending on the user's email, this string can be even longer. What I've noticed is that it is truncated when it reaches 128 bytes. Could this size limit be increased? Thanks, Andre

I am building dovecot-2.0-pigeonhole-0.2.1 (dovecot-2.0.5, but that does not matter) with dovecot-config in place (in /usr/lib64/dovecot) on a 64bit Linux (RHEL5): ./configure --with-dovecot=/usr/lib64/dovecot The libs needed for several executables in libexec such as /usr/libexec/dovecot/managesieve-login are not installed in /usr/lib64 but in /usr/lib64/dovecot. Therefore the executable will fail to run: ldd /usr/libexec/dovecot/managesieve-login libdovecot-login.so.0 => not found libdovecot.so.0 => not found librt.so.1 => /lib64/librt.so.1 (0x00000032e9600000) libc.so.6 => /lib64/libc.so.6 (0x00000032e8200000) libpthread.so.0 => /lib64/libpthread.so.0 (0x00000032e8e00000) /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x00000032e7e00000) To me this looks like a bug in the generated Makefile. I could easily fix that by providing the library path for the loader or by symlinks in /usr/lib64, but this is a workaround only. During norml operation this morning we're seeing a significantly increased load on the IMAP server (factor 5, from 5 to 25). Does dovecot need to rebuild index files or perform other IO intensive operations after the upgrade? We're using Maildir Our monitoring shows increased "system" time. Hi all, We are migrating a mail service with 80.000 users, and 40.000 of them are using IMAP. At present, this service is handled by Courier, with some custom patches. And we are migrating to Dovecot 1.2.15. One of these patches is used to interact with Spamassassin. If Courier detects any move/copy operation to the "IsSPAM" or "IsntSPAM" folders, a specific bash script is executed like IsSPAM.sh and IsntSPAM.sh These scripts do the following: IsSPAM.sh 1. Takes user as parameter USER. 2. Retrieves the homeDirectory of USER from ldap, using ldapsearch. 3. Executes /usr/bin/sa-learn --spam ... with IsSPAM folder IsntSPAM.sh 1. Takes user as parameter USER. 2. Retrieves the homeDirectory of USER from ldap, using ldapsearch. 3. Executes /usr/bin/sa-learn --ham ... with IsntSPAM folder 4. Moves all content from IsntSPAM to INBOX I think that it shouldn't be very hard to implement a plugin to detect MOVE/COPY events to specified folders, and to execute specified scripts on detection. Is there already such a plugin for dovecot 1.2.15?

[Dovecot] How to add the missing maildir folders

Hi fellow list members, What would be the best way to add the .Sent,.Draft, etc. folders to the maildir tree? It seems not Dovecots task to do that but of the MUA. I have seen several options. Use of skel but that works only for new system users. I have only virtual users preloaded in a database. I've discoverred that ONLY Roundcube add the folders (if configured to do that) but I've not been able to have the folders created by Thunderbird. Yes, you can manage the subscribtions to folders but there is no way to create them. I did not bother to try Outlook... MY users use pop3, imap and web (Roundcube) but I cannot ask them to use Roundcube first, just to create the folders. I have no such thing as maildrop, which seems to be able to create folders. greetings, i'd like to ask for a certain feature request. dovecot:maildir_uidlist_recreate() to set the gid of new files based on the parent directory group ownership and normally that's desired, an appropriate security method. on our server, we use directory permissions to more stringently isolate access between users and services. we have three group ids used for this, and i'll use my name as example. Hey, i am gonna migrate 240 GB of emails. To a new server with dovecot 2.0.4 and i am gonna also change the format from mbox to maildir. Everything is pretty ready. But i now need two things. First is, is there any command to rebuild index files in dovecot ? And i need to force a initial squat build, need comand for it also. It is about 5 thousands accounts. Its prefere have this built in dovecot than run a script that log in every sing account to make dovecot index the files, and after it make a small search to make initial squat also. Any one can help ? []'sf.rique

Hello, There is the autocreate plugin[1], but the problem is that a user cannot delete those mailboxes. It can be a problem for people using clients in different languages and that want mailboxes in these languages. I would be great if Dovecot could make some of these automatic mailboxes optional. Hi, I noticed that someone took over the development of the dovecot antispam plugin, and the is currently hosted at dovecots hg repo. Great to see that the plugin is not dead! ;) I created a gentoo ebuild that builds the plugin from the repo, and the plugin seems to work nice with dspam (using mailtrain backend). I'm running a checkout from Tue Sep 21 16:14:48 2010. However, it is lacking a release so distributions can also easily update the plugin. Is there any news on this? Regards, Tom

[Dovecot] LMTP proxy too many DATA output timeout (perhaps)

Hi All, we are getting a lot of this message from dovecot director. They seem to be too many. Backend servers do not log anything and postfix logs a lot of these errors. It seems that dovecot strategy handgling data output timeout when proxying LMTP is or too aggressive or may have some other problem. This error generate sometime a lot of dupicate deliveries, probably because meanwhile real server has finished delivering the mail, proxy drops the connection. Another symptom, maybe related to duplicate uid patch, is that we are receiving blank email. What may I look further? Regards Luca

I'm trying to configure my proxy/director server, which proxies imap/pop/managesieve correctly already, to proxy LMTP to my backend message store server (dovecot+postfix already configured there) This is what I have so far: 10-auth.conf using auth-static.conf.ext instead of auth-ldap.conf.ext (switching to this made proxying imap/pop/managesieve work) 10-director.conf protocol lmtp { auth_socket_path = /usr/local/var/run/dovecot/director-userdb } 10-master.conf (changed user from vmail to dovecot as it was giving permission denied error before -- on the backend dovecot server this is still 'vmail') unix_listener auth-userdb { mode = 0600 user = dovecot } 20-lmtp.conf lmtp_proxy = yes auth-static.conf.ext passdb { driver = static args = proxy=y nopassword=y } my dovecot logs show: auth: Debug: password(user(a)dev.domain.com): passdb doesn't support credential lookups lmtp(1261): Error: user user(a)dev.domain.com: Auth PASS lookup failed postfix show: [private/dovecot-lmtp] said: 451 4.3.0 <user(a)dev.domain.com> Temporary user lookup failure (in reply to RCPT TO command) Any ideas? [Dovecot] Can't receive emails

Hello everyone, I installed postfix and dovecot (imap + pop) on a debian server. I can send emails via postfix and I could receive emails via dovecot before. Yesterday my server got shutdown and restarted and since then, I somehow have some problems. If I send some emails, I don't receive them in /var/vmail/%d/%n/Maildir But the login works fine (pop and imap). How can I figure out, why there are no mails comming? [Dovecot] Another dovecot-lda / deliver Segfault

I just upgraded from 1.2.11 to 2.0.5. When I send mail from a virtual local user, to another virtual local user, the email sends fine (passing though postfix, then amavisd, then to dovecot deliver) and the recipient receives it, but during this deliver segfaults (pointing to libdovecot.storage.0.0.0) and sends an undeliverable message back to the original sender. This does not happen if someone outside the localdomain sends mail, and does not happen sending from local to a remote address, just purely from virtal to virtual locally.

Also sysadmin may have intentionally removed some admin rights from some mailboxes (especially when using symlinked shared mailboxes). - Maildir: Fixed potential "Duplicate file entry" in dovecot-uidlist file errors. - Maildir: Avoid unnecessary uidlist recreation during mail delivery. - imap: When SELECT fails, it didn't close the previous mailbox. - Dovecot master process could have died if it got SIGCHLD signals very rapidly while it was trying to log. This could have happened for example if a lot of imap/pop3 sessions disconnected at the exact same time.

Hi All, I've been experimenting with deliver on my personal domain, and so far everything has been peachy except for Mail.app. Mail.app (on multiple devices) is showing what looks to be GMT times, rather than the date header. Initially I thought it was something I did on my Mac, until I got an Ipad to test with - and never connected it to my Mac - and had the same time issue. It seems Mail.app uses the timestamp ('arrived date'?) on the mail file itself (Maildir here) to display the time. So.. I have dovecot 1.2.10 installed on top of vpopmail (multiple MXs, delivering to OpenSolaris NFS share via tcp), and it seems that deliver is using the GMT time when writing the Maildir file, and vdelivermail just uses the adjusted time.. Or maybe it just allows the OS to write the timestamp. Either way, is this a known issue with deliver - or is there a patch? I don't recall ever seeing it come up on the list, and I'm not seeing anything in the changelog. Rick

Hello Dovecot users, The recent release of Dovecot v1.2.15 is a good opportunity to release new versions of Sieve and ManageSieve for Dovecot v1.2. These releases consist entirely of bugfixes and introduce no new features. Changelog Sieve v0.1.18: - Imap4flags: fixed segfault bug occuring in multiscript context. Occured in specific situations when a script using imap4flags was followed in the sequence by scripts not using imap4flags. - Imap4flags: fixed bug in setflag command; when parameter was a stringlist, only the last item was actually set. - Prevented assertion failure due to currupt binary string representation. If the string were missing a final \0 character an assertion was produced in stead of a binary corruption error. - Multiscript: fixed duplicate implicit keep caused by erroneous execution state update. - Fixed Sieve script name checking to properly handle length limit and added 0x00ff as invalid character. - Removed spurious old stdio.h (top) includes; these caused compile issues on specific systems. - Fixed default Sieve capability (as reported by ManageSieve): extra extensions spamtest, spamtestplus and virustest were enabled by default. Hello, I'm using mdbox to store messages and maildirsize to store quotas I have the following in my dovecot.conf mail_plugins = quota trash zlib fts fts_squat imap_quota imap_zlib antispam quota = maildir:User quota quota_rule = ?:storage=1G quota_rule2 = Trash:storage=+10%% I noticed that the quotas were wrong, so I sent myself some emails in hope of seeing the ratio change to the correct values, but the amount of used space changed to the total of what was just received, not the total of what was in the mailbox. So I tried to recalculate the quota using doveadm quota recalc, but it didn't help, instead of recalculating the amount of used space, it just wrote 0 0 to maildirsize. Do I have a config problem or is someting broken in Dovecot? Cheers, Olivier

It seems that the benefits of this outweigh the lack of error message when typoing a mailbox name. + Added some disk I/O optimizations to Maildir and index code. They're especially helpful with short-lived connections like POP3. + pop3: Added pop3_fast_size_lookups setting. - doveconf sometimes failed with complaining about missing ssl_key setting, causing e.g. dovecot-lda to fail. - lda: If there's an error in configuration, doveconf didn't exit with EX_TEMPFAIL as it should have. - sdbox: Fixed memory leak when copying messages with hard links. - zlib + sdbox combination didn't work - zlib: Fixed several crashes, which mainly showed up with mbox. - quota: Don't crash if user has quota disabled, but plugin loaded. - doveadm fetch uid was actually returning sequence, not uid. - v2.0.4's subscription listing ignored (and logged a warning about) subscriptions=no namespaces' entries in some configurations. (So listing shared mailboxes' subscriptions could have been broken.) - acl: Fixed crashing when sometimes listing shared mailboxes via dict proxy.

I've only experienced this with Thunderbird...maybe the "regular" berries have not configured their BIS accounts properly? The only problem I'm aware of with Blackberry devices is that if the BIS servers can't login because Dovecot is being upgraded (version mismatch), then they'll go into polling mode (no more instant emails). Hello, I'm finding a way to have a pool of smtp-auth servers in front of my actuals servers to permit relay to our customers. Now users sends emails connecting to the right IP via mail.domain.tld, with authentication. Every server has it's own user database in mysql. I'd like to have a pool of server (with round robin, ideally with postfix + sasl + dovecot) that authenticate the users with the actuals servers and then pointing mail.domain.tld to this pool and not to one server. My trouble is how to authenticate users. Can I use: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Authentication/MultipleDatabases to tell Dovecot to authenticate with every MySQL database on the servers "behind"? If yes, is there a better way to do this considering I'm already using some proxy machines (dovecot) for pop3/imap and so I already have a db with domain.tld -> IP of the server? I also have some machine without a MySQL DB for users (vpopmail + cdb), so the option with MultipleDatabases will be good only for some machines. Something similar to the proxy mechanism that I already use for pop3/imsp will be good: the proxy connect to the machine behind that do the authentication, I only need a table with domain -> server IP (that I already have). I've read some of the mailing lists looking for information on this. Thus far, about all I've found is there was a complete rewrite of Dovecot some time back. I'm wondering now is it even possible to use the same mbox's from 0.99.13-3 with version 1.0.15-2? Is there a procedure documented somewhere? Any pointers would be much appreciated. Hi Timo, upgrading from 2.03 to 2.04 broke folder sharing at my setup double checked this with tests reverting versions etc setting acl and subcriptions are working with 2.04, but in difference to 2.03 no shared subfolder is created at acl/subscription set time so subscribing afterwards fail with ignore message by bad subscription the mails store is on drbd with ocfs2 i didnt change any other config parameter during the tests so some patch must have changed folder sharing behavior from 2.03 to 2.04 speculate something with default hardlinks etc? any idea ? -- Best Regards MfG Robert Schetterer Germany/Munich/Bavaria

[Dovecot] ACL handling bugs in v1.2.8+ and v2.0

I thought I'd write one mail about this, rather than duplicate the whole thing to both v1.2.15 and v2.0.5 release announcements. So, ever since this commit: 2009-11-10 Timo Sirainen <tss(a)iki.fi> * src/plugins/acl/acl-backend-vfile.c: acl: Merge group rights if user belongs to more than one. [76ff6831c9ae] The ACLs were being merged, rather than fully replaced, a bit too often. Since this is about merging, the problem could have happened only when using more than one entry in the ACL file. The main problems created by this were: a) If admin wanted to remove some rights from mailboxes in user's private namespace (e.g. symlinked shared mailboxes), they may not have gotten removed. b) When mixing up multiple ACL entries, such as groups/users the more specific entry may not have replaced the previous entry (e.g. group-override may not have worked as expected). The bug happened when two or more ACL entries of same "type" existed. The first entry was handled correctly, but the next ones may have only been adding ACLs rather than replacing them. For example if you had the following ACL file: group=people lrwi user=foo lr user=bar lr So basically everyone in "people" group should have "lrwi" rights, but foo and bar users should have only "lr" rights. If foo and bar didn't belong to people group, everything would work as expected. If they did, then what would happen is: * foo would work correctly, because it was the first entry of user type. * bar would keep "lrwi" rights, because the previous entry (user=foo) was of the same type (both are "user" type), so Dovecot decided to add the rights on top of group=people entry rather than replace them. BTW. The other ACL bug/"feature" of automatically adding admin rights that was fixed in v1.2.15 was already fixed in v2.0.beta2.

Hello, I'm trying to get the zlib plugin working on my 2.0 server. I started with an mbox that Dovecot can read just fine. I was worried that it wasn't even using the zlib plugin, but since it makes reference to zlib.read, I assume that it is. So far, I can sucessufully do POP3 for system users, but when Postfix tries to deliver email to the Dovecot LMTP service the LMTP reject the job with: "User doesn't exist ale(a)centos54.mydomain.com" Any suggestions? [Dovecot] IMAP connection timeout value?

So we're having some ISP issues lately, meaning we have to reboot our cable modem like 2-3 times a day. An unfortunate side-effect I've found is, once the users max out their connection limit (which I've set to 10, and many people do), if we reboot the cable modem, they can't log in cause their connections get 'stuck' until I `doveadm kick` them, or wait for the connections to timeout which takes ??? minutes. Can I adjust that value to something like 30 seconds? Thanks and best regards, KT

Hello, First of all, thank you for developing a fantastic IMAP server! I've just upgraded to 2.0.4 (from 2.0.1) and when I try to run /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver (either directly from the commandline, or from within the MTA) I get the following error: doveconf: Fatal: Error in configuration file /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf: ssl enabled, but ssl_key not set I converted my old config file settings using "dovecot -c /etc/dovecot/dovecot.orig -n > /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf" as some of the option names had changed. The computer has been rebooted since the upgrade. Hi, I *think* there might be an auth/proxy bug in 2.0.4 Specifically I cloned my 1.2 virtual machine, upgraded the clone to 2.0.4 and tested it by trying to login using CRAM-MD5. I get the errors: Sep 29 22:50:23 mail_test dovecot: imap-login: Disconnected (auth failed, 1 attempts): user=<demo(a)abc.com>, method=CRAM-MD5, rip=x.x.x.x, lip=x.x.x.x, mpid=0, TLS Sep 29 22:50:30 mail_test dovecot: auth: mysql: Connected to mysql-local (postfix) Sep 29 22:50:30 mail_test dovecot: imap-login: Error: proxy: password not given: user=<demo(a)abc.com>, method=CRAM-MD5, rip=x.x.x.x, lip=x.x.x.x, mpid=0, TLS Interestingly the config here (accidently as it happens) causes the connection to use the dovecot "proxy" feature back to the original 1.2 machine. I updated my config so that everything stays on the 2.0.4 machine and authentication proceeds normally, messages about generating MD5 hash from the DB, etc, logged in ok. I then change the configuration so that the 2.0.4 machine proxies the connection back to the 1.2 machine (again) and try to login to the 2.0.4 machine and get the same errors as above. Seems like the error is only when proxying (needless to say, the old 1.2 machine works fine with CRAM and that's how it's normally accessed, so also does the 2.0.4 machine, it's only proxying one to the other which isn't apparently working?) It's late and so I haven't managed to probe the 1.2 machine too much, but initially looking at the log files I don't see any evidence of the 2.0.4 machine actually contacting it? hello everybody! This's my very first post in dovecot. I'm installing a new server for backup site, with qmail + vpopmail 5.4.32 + dovecot. Production server, more or less outdated, runs with Couier Imap, but everybody know the history.. I've been fighting for several days...And no luck with version 2.0.4, 2.0.3 neither. My first asumption was to review things thousand of times due to newbie condition... This morning I've tried version 1.2.14 and voila! , it works perfectly! The error log with version 2 was the famous unkown user one: dovecot: auth: vpopmail(test4(a)adomain.com,10.206.16.10): unknown user test4 user worked perfectly with pop3... Just FYI, is this can help. Regards!

I see the .dovecot.lda-dupes file that is created, but it doesn't seem like just plain text, and it doesn't seem to include strings of the senders, just the recipient. But I know the vacation functionality is clever enough to keep track of who it's already autoreplied to. On a related note, I'm curious about other smarts built in to sieve's vacation responder -- what other things does it check, like Precedence header? Benjamin

Hello, One account couldn't get emails all the sudden. dovecot-lda was crashing with "signal 11 (segmentation fault)". There was absolutely nothing in the dovecot logs, even with mail_debug=yes. I found out that it was because of the following lines in a sieve script that were generated by a script generator (Ingo). if true { keep; stop; } I'm using the latest revision of pigeonhole with Dovecot 2.0.4. [Dovecot] Can we retrieve Dovecot Proxys 'hostName' from Director instead of LDAP?

We have a Dovecot installation of several nodes that share an NFS mount for the user data. We are trying to configure Dovecot Proxy with Director in order to have Director select the appropriate IMAP server for a given user on behave of Dovecot Proxy. So far all examples I've seen on the dovecot site require the proxy to know the exact mail server to pass the user to by way of an LDAP lookup. Does anyone know of a way to have Dovecot Proxy pick a server from Directors status list instead of looking it up from LDAP? Also, how does Director discover that an IMAP server is up or down so that it can adjust in the case of a server failure? Is this something that Director does automatically or do we need to manually change the mail servers vhost count in case of an IMAP node failure? Thanks

I have a problem with dovecot-acl. Some of our users need to use the same Mailbox with all folders: Inbox (with subfolders), Outbox, Send and Deleted, (some users need in full righs, some - readonly) so I choosed Symlinking mailboxes and tried to use dovecot-acl file. cat dovecot-acl: user=t1 lrwsti user=operolegs lrwsti user=operantona lrwsti user=operdss lr User operdss have lrwsti rights in this shared mailbox unstead of lr! But if I comment out other users in the dovecot-acl: #user=t1 lrwsti #user=operolegs lrwsti #user=operantona lrwsti user=operdss lr User operdss have lr rights. Whats wrong? It seems, that dovecot-acl is working only for one user. If you assume the user retrieves their mail soon after delivery, it doesn't make sense. :) I think the biggest benefit to my service is the catching is phisjing scams aimed at my users. I usually get a copy (dolts), and I will block the reply to addresses, but it would be better to remove it cpmpletely. Another possible use might be URL scanning for updated malware sites and labeling it accordingly -but modifying an email might a little excessive for this function. Rick

I was wondering if anyone thought of applying filters to email post delivery, pre-read. Basically the idea would be to head off Spam, Malware or Phishing for already delivered email. Malware would probably be the least likely target, as (knock on wood) user workstations would be updated, but a targeted phishing scam would not create a public signature that would be downloaded, yet an admin may have a regex that could be used to remove that email before it left the server. I used to run find and grep on my Maildirs, but that's no longer practical. I think maybe an 'on connect', or 'on read' might be an option. Thoughts? Rick

Hi Timo..... Trying to resolve my problem with the references in copying a email between Folders (when i move from inbox -> sent for example), i got some doubt. My plugin create a new ostream in v->save_begin, and i start a function from my library to create the reference, but when the email is been copying, the new email don't pass in this function, and i don't start my function to create a reference. My doubt is, if copying a email is a "copy + paste", why the s->save_begin it's not called ? I search in the iostream-internal.h to rewrite some "open stream" but the only one available is the close. There is a place to call my function every time that one ostream is opened, including the copy ?

Hello, I thought mdbox was production ready, but it seems to me that (in 2.0.4) it's quite broken. 1) The documentation only running this to convert from maildir to mdbox: *dsync mirror maildir:~/Maildir* but based on my experience and on posts on the mailing list, it's not enough. A namespace has to be defined and it's not clear whether / or . should be used as a separator. I tried with a dot first and the INBOX folders were empty. It seemed to work better with / 2) After having defined a namespace, running dsync again makes it spit tons of errors Error: Can't rename mailbox INBOX_28c716242e53784cc9030100d3b51c5c to INBOX: Target mailbox already exists Error: Mailboxes don't have unique GUIDs: 4536121fce3ca14cf8c40000d3b51c5c is shared by INBOX and INBOX_4536121fce3ca14cf8c40c Info: INBOX/spam: only in dest Info: INBOX: only in source Each run will create more folders with GUIDs attached to the folder name. 3) Deleting these folders after having moved their content to the properly named ones seems impossible. I see a long list of folders in the bin and when I hit "Empty bin" in Thunderbird, nothing happens. There must must be a caching issue, because if I click on the folder, I'm told these folders don't exist. Timo, I'm trying to get a count of active proxy sessions on a given Director. I can of course enable verbose_proctitle and parse the 'N connections' string out of ps output or /proc/pid/cmdline. Is there a better way to do that, perhaps with doveadm? Goes back to needing a command for proxy and director ring status, I guess. -Brad

Running Dovecot version 1.0.10 on Ubuntu Server 8.04 amd64 (ext3). Some users have emails that will not go away. They delete them and the message is moved to the trash folder only to reappear when the mailbox is refreshed. Moving the message manually to another folder has the same effect. We are running Thunderbird as our email client, though I have tried using other clients to remove the messages. Just upgraded from 2.0.3 to 2.0.4 and getting this message in the logs (repeated several times) master: Error: service(imap): child 9631 killed with signal 11 I'm using mdbox and had no problems using 2.0.3 until I upgraded this morning. Hello, I have many Sieve rules and searching for a way to "track" renamings/moving of mailboxes (folders) on my IMAP server. Is there a unique ID for every folder available? I don't think there, i found no ID inside my folders :( If not, it think i need to create a ID-file for every folder and after that i can track the folders and update the rules =) Thanks

Hi, I set mail_max_userip_connections in our IMAP configuration to mail_max_userip_connections = 10 to allow users 10 parallel connections. It seems that this also limits the amount of parallel connections from one IP but different users?! Our users mostly accessing the IMAP server by a webmailer or proxies. Thus, all users (>10000) come from only 5 different IP. However, I got a lot of complaints about denied connections after setting mail_max_userip_connections = 10. Let's say one has a SQL table with following fields for John Doe: login: u0007 password: {SHA1}... mailhome: /path/to/joeshome email: john.doe(a)example.com To log in, for internal policy reasons, John MUST make use of his userid "u0007". So, in the password_query, one would need something like: ... WHERE login = '%u' ... On the other hand, for receiving mail thru say, LMTP, one would need something like this in the user_query: ... WHERE email = '%Lu' ... Hello, I´m using Dovecot 2.0.1 with quota support (quota and imap_quota) which works perfect. However, I´d like to give some mailboxes unlimited quota. What quota setting (in the backend (SLQ)) is needed to tell Dovecot as LDA that the mailbox has unlimited quota? 0 or NULL or -1 or something else? Regards Patrick

Reviewing some mailing list archives and the wiki, I still don't have a real clear picture of why I'd want to use mdbox. What I've taken from the info I've reviewed says mdbox is more complicated (than sdbox), has greater potential for breakage (simply because it's more complex), and has a theoretical performance impact depending on the exact filesystem/hardware used. Was that an accurate summary? Is mdbox something that was desired to solve a particular problem? -- Daniel

I'm running that doveadm command as root, with the -u <user> parameter, where <user> is a virtual user. Anyway, I've just read the wiki2 again, and noted that I don't really need the expire plugin, because it is only needed for the -A option. If I specify the -u parameter, it doesn't utilize the plugin. [Dovecot] LDA + Postfix + LDAP + Sieve (Vacation): Wrong Domain in Reply

Hello everyone. I'm running dovecot (1.2.9) with postfix (2.7.0) on an ubuntu 10.04.1. I'm hosting mail for several domains and using the dovecot local delivery agent. Everything has been working great. However, today I set up a sieve script to send out-of-office replies (vacation) for one of our users. I tested it and got the response just fine. However, when looking at the "From" header of the auto-reply, I noticed that the domain name was wrong. My postfix master.cf line for doing local delivery is: dovecot unix - n n - - pipe flags=DRhu user=mail:mail argv=/usr/lib/dovecot/deliver -f ${sender} -d ${user}@${nexthop} My LDA configuration is: protocol lda { postmaster_address = postmaster(a)our-primary-domain.com hostname = our-primary-domain.com mail_plugins = sieve quota_full_tempfail = yes deliver_log_format = msgid=%m: %$ rejection_reason = Your message to <%t> was automatically rejected:%n%r } So, our main "administrative" domain is: my-primary-domain.com, the mail server being mail.my-primary-domain.com. I sent an email to a user: janedoe(a)my-other-domain.com and the LDA with Sieve successfully sent me a reply. However, the "From" was: janedoe@mail instead of janedoe@my-other-domain. Anyhow, vacation auto-responders are fundamental to operations here and we manage mail for several separate companies. We need the "From" address to reflect the domain of the actual company. I'm stumped as to why sieve isn't getting/using the envelope sender's domain. I'm hoping someone here can point out (a hopefully obvious) mistake. [Dovecot] Trouble creating shared virtual folders

Hi all, I've tried to contact Timo Sirainen by dovecot irc channel but since I couldn't I'm trying the mailinglist. I'm trying to create shared virtual folders, users should not be able either to create or delete a virtual folder. What is the best way to do this? I've tried to do this with virtual mailboxes, but I had problems with permissions, I removed write permissions from folder "virtual_folders" but if I do that dovecot creates "virtual_folders_indexes" without write permissions too, which in this case are needed. I've tried to solve this using ACL but as far as I understood I need an ACL file per folder, which in my case is undoable.
