[Dovecot] Double logging problem

Hi, I have a relatively new installation with LDAP and Postfix, running smoothly on CentOS but it logs dovecot messages both in /var/log/messages and in /var/log/dovecot.log. I have configured it to log in /var/log/dovecot.log (with syslog_facility: local1 and a respective line in syslog.conf, see below) but it also logs in /var/log/messages. As a result, I would expect it to only log into /var/log/dovecot.log. Can someone suggest why this happens and help me stop logging dovecot messages in /var/log/messages ? Could it be because the following directive (in syslog.conf) does not capture dovecot messages to exclude them? *.info;mail.none;authpriv.none;cron.none /var/log/messages Could I use something like (in syslog.conf): *.info;mail.none;authpriv.none;cron.none;dovecot.none /var/log/messages to capture dovecot messages and *exclude* them from /var/log/messages ? I am not sure if syslog understands "dovecot.none". Please explain how this could be done. [Dovecot] Cyrus to Dovecot migration (OS X Server): Backup + restore messages, live "standby server" and delayed expunge and…

Hi List, I am very close to migrating from Cyrus to Dovecot (to be more precise from Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 to 10.6.4). The latter is reporting the dovecotd version to be 1.1.20apple0.5. All I have read about dovecot is extremely positive so I am exited to make the switch. BACKUP: BUT I would like to be sure that I can make a sound backup strategy. For Cyrus i used topicdesk's mailbfr (a script that stops the mailservice and then rsync's the mailstore to a backup location incrementing daily and restarting a complete backup weekly). This script is not yet ready for Dovecot, but from what I have read it should be as easy as "just" backing up the mail-data (/var/spool/imap/dovecot/mail in OS X), eg. with rsync. Our current setup is requiring ca. 11 hours for a full (200+ GB) backup (weekly) this is not good for uptime… RESTORE: Restore should be the same (well reverse) "just" restoring the files and making sure the get the correct permissions. What I am not sure about is the (cyrus specific) need for reconstructing the database, as I have read (on this list) it seems that dovecot is designed better and will "automatically" recognised the restored messages without the need to reconstruct any databases or stopping+restarting the service. Is this really true ,-)? NB.: For restores I plan to always restore to a specific subfolder for the user (eg RESTORED MAIL) as opposed to placing the mails within the folder hierachy LIVE BACKUP SERVER I have been told, that dovecot provides clever mechanisms for making it possible to synchronise the data to a "hot-spare" server. Both for being able to provide access to the data during breakdown or planned maintenance, but perhaps also to make backups easier (perhaps not needed?) DELAYED DELETION OF MESSAGES I believe that the feature is called "delayed expunge", a way of not deleting the messages until after an additional delay from the time the user deletes the message. Is this possible in dovecot? DOCUMENTATION Where would the best FAQ/KB for getting to know dovecot better be, perhaps there have even been written good books (I know old fashioned, but I really like the physical hands on a real book provides ;-) It's a lot of questions and I hope for good pointers to where I can find more documentation and good feedback from the list. Hi, the default: listen = *, :: should work and should open port 143 on IPv4 and IPv6. Hi I'm running 1.2.13 with sieve & managesieve; no problems whatsoever, but the patching & compilation process is a PITA. So I thought, why not try out 2.0rc4 for a change. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, K-9 Mail (on Android) has been mentioned on this list multiple times recently, I think it's definitely an IMAP client "on the rise". :) It supports IMAP IDLE, and so brings "push mail" to Android mobile phone users. To bring this into the context of this mailing list: I guess a lot of people on this list are making use of server-side filtering (using sieve), so that mails from certain persons or mailing lists end up in the right mailboxes, right on delivery. Now, this is all great, but there are issues when server-side filtering and IMAP IDLE come together: Only one mailbox can be "watched" with one IMAP IDLE connection. So, people who have set up elaborate server-side filtering with say, 50 different sieve "fileinto" calls, will constantly have a *lot* of IMAP IDLE connections open, if they really want to get informed of any mail arriving in any of their mailboxes. Keeping those 50 IMAP connections open wouldn't cost much bandwidth, and who cares about the Internet router's connection tables getting unnecessarily big, anyway? But then there is the "problem" of a mobile phone being carried around constantly, switching physical connections (from WLAN access point 1 to WLAN access point 2 to 3G to 2G to no connection at all and back), every time needing to terminate* those 50 IMAP connections, and then establish 50 new ones (with SSL handshake overhead and all). So, all in all, not an optimal solution. *) (which does not always happen the way it should, see http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/detail?id=1255) I see two ways to improve the situation (one of them quite dovecot-centric): 1) A new extension of the IMAP protocol: IMAP MULTI-IDLE, which somehow allows a client to get notified of changes to more than one mailbox within one IMAP connection. This conflicts with the basic IMAP design though, AFAIK, and is thus not likely to be feasible. 2) Enhancing dovecot's Virtual plugin, so virtual mailboxes do not only get updated on select and expunge, but also when anything changes that affects the set of messages shown in the virtual mailbox. I guess that would have an impact on performance, and thus should be optional. Let me explain the second one: With the help of the Virtual plugin, it is possible to pull all those 50 mailboxes that receive incoming mail together again, just like the INBOX of the pre-server-side-filtering times - the user could configure a virtual mailbox to show all unread mails from those 50 mailboxes. Now the mobile IMAP IDLE users could just watch that one virtual mailbox, needing only one IMAP IDLE connection. After having read the mail (directly in the virtual mailbox), it would disappear, but of course still be in the "real" mailbox, determined by the sieve filter on delivery. [Dovecot] sender address of sieve vacation script

Hi, not entirerly sure wether this is the right place to ask. Sorry if not. I´m running dovecot on a Mac OS X Server (10.6.4). Everything works fine. When I try to enable a vacation message, I get the following error in the log: delays=0/0.01/0.09/0.1, dsn=5.0.0, status=bounced (host XXX[x.x.x.x] said: 553 Mail to <name(a)domain.tld> not allowed; missing domain name in MAIL FROM (in reply to RCPT TO command)) Where host is the mail relay. The logs on the mail relay show matching entries. Sending mails is generally working. I´ve sniffed the network traffic and the FROM Field in the SMTP transfer contains only the following text: <> I´ve allready set the value of myorigin in /private/etc/postfix/ main.cf but to no avail. [Dovecot] mobile phone access to dovecot

I didn't find anything interesting in the search, so I just wanted to see what other people have done (or thought about doing). I'd like to be able to access my dovecot server via IMAP, from the Internet, using the integrated e-mail client from a smart phone. I'm very concerned about security and don't feel comfortable just poking holes into the firewall for direct access from the Internet. Is there a better way to do this? Hi Timo, Before I go file a bug for Thunderbird, can you confirm that IMAP access to the dovecot mail list archives should still be working? It's much better to do this in Dovecot/LMTP then in Postfix-Relay (which can then use LMTP for dynamic address verification). [Dovecot] Dovecot 1.2.13 intermittent authentication failures

Hey folks, I recently upgraded my mail server from an older OpenBSD -CURRENT snapshot to the latest (Aug 1). As part of this upgrade, I updated all of my packages to their latest versions. Since this upgrade, dovecot has begun failing to authenticate intermittently. I use it primarily for web mail (Squirrelmail 1.4.20) and leave myself logged in during the day. This problem manifests itself by kicking me back to the "Username or password incorrect" screen occasionally (several times an hour) when the page refreshes. I am not using sieve, and while I have the PostgreSQL version of the OpenBSD package installed, I do not currently use it for authentication. I am authenticating against the OpenBSD system. The only error I get in the mail log is: Aug 3 11:00:09 fusion dovecot: imap-login: Aborted login (auth failed, 1 attempts): user=<benny>, method=PLAIN, rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured There are no errors in the Apache error log... Squirrelmail's version wasn't upgraded, so I don't think this is a Squirrelmail problem as far as I can tell. [Dovecot] IMAP/POP3 Proxy Redundancy

Looking over the list archives and Wiki there doesn't seem to be any sort of built-in host redundancy with the proxy. I would prefer to use a built in though it doesn't look like this is possible. One of the suggestions that I found in the list archives was to write a script which checks the health of the hosts and adjusts the MySQL table accordingly. I know this unnecessary lookups question is really a postfix one, but I'm curious if anyone else sees the behaviour of postfix continuing looking up users after it clearly have got its answer that it is "not a local domain" response. First i convert like i am trying it above, and after i do this, i run once again to see if got any new mail after this, i change in my mysql setting of mail location to /CX4/vdomains/%d/%u/mail/ My mysql settins override the conf file. Hello, I have configured Dovecot 1.2.12 with Postfix 2.6.5 and everything is working fine. But tomorrow I wanted to run IMAP ALCs and from log I found that this plugin is conflicting with parameter mail_full_filesystem_access = yes in my config. But when I set mail_full_filesystem_access = no it stops authorization for postfix with this message: <pasek(a)valbek.cz>: Command died with signal 11: "/usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver" Does anybody know what could be wrong in my config? I've spend a night with it but without success. [Dovecot] Convert plugin

Hi, I'm trying to convert users from a sendmail server to a postfix/dovecot server. All works fine but one of the last things is to rescue the messages in /var/mail/<user> on the old server. This seems very straitforward using the convert plugin but with the settings from the wiki, nothing happens when the user logs in. Do I need a private namespace for this as suggested elsewhere in the wiki? I experimented with mb2md.pl and that seems to do what we need but having the old mail converted upon login is much more attractive. In that way we hope that we can also find some 'dead' users. Hi Timo.... I try to change my plugin to read the input email to increase a header line and one \r\n. But i need help to get this input.... My plugin is based in zlib plugin. I try to change this line and put inside this IF , a call to my function to handle with the input email from client. But i got some errors about the input part. In other email, Timo said, to get the S and W flags in the email name, i need to intercept the email input from client to dovecot, in this part is done the W and S calculation. Timo, where is the part that i can get the input from client ?

Hi, we're using quota with the maildir backend. When new mail arrives, the quota gets updated. But when mail is expunged, quota stays the same (see imap dialog below). Hi, Since the 23rd of March, we encounter mailbox corruption for some users (15 out of 5000) using POP mainly via Thunderbird. Symptoms are : -users can login but fail to receive new mails and fail to read their inbox -Dovecot.log : ar 29 11:00:06 Error: POP3(user_login): Couldn't init INBOX: Mailbox isn't a valid mbox -The mailbox start with either 'FFrom or 'FrFrom' We can temporarily fix the issue by manually editing the mailbox so that it begins with a proper 'From'. For some users, the problem reoccurred after we apply this workaround. I have to mention that this server has been running fine since almost a year with the current hardware and software configuration. Does anybody has an idea regarding this issue? According to the documentation, Dovecot is smart enough to get everything it needs from the /usr/local/ssl/lib/pkgconfig/*.pc files. Dovecot 1.2.X just compiles fine if configured like this: ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/${DOVECOTVER} --with-ssl=openssl The problem with Dovecot 2.0.rc3 is, that libdovecot-login.so isn't given the correct pathes for the OpenSSL libraries: $ ldd src/login-common/.libs/libdovecot-login.so linux-gate.so.1 => (0x00b6e000) libssl.so.1.0.0 => not found libcrypto.so.1.0.0 => not found libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x00b2a000) librt.so.1 => /lib/librt.so.1 (0x004d4000) libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x00110000) /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x006e7000) libpthread.so.0 => /lib/libpthread.so.0 (0x009c6000) So everything depending on libdovecot-login.so will fail. [Dovecot] Date problem after import

Hi, am running into an import problem: After I upgraded an Mac OS X 10.5.8 Server to Mac OS X 10.6, not all, but quite some mails show wrong dates. They are dated to the year 2020, which is obviously not possible for mail that has been sent long ago. Now 10.5 to 10.6 is a move from cyrus to dovecot and the migration scripts used by Apple are supposed to do a nice migration. I have seen this suceed a lot of times, but this time not. As far as I understand, dovecot uses the modification date of the email to build its index and deleting the index should make it being rebuilt. But my "wrong" emails also have wrong modification dates. Only the headers inside the mail text still show the correct dates. My guess is, that something got wrong when migrating from cyrus. Even maybe the cyrus db might have been corrupt in the first place. As I can't go back and reimport I have to live with the situation. My plan to fix it is to write a script to traverse the mailbox hierarchy, delete the index files and have all email files with a modification date in 2020 be set to a modification date that is extracted from its contents "Date:" header. Now my question is, if you think this way is good, feasible or if another solution springs to the mind of those more adept with dovecot. Any help is appreciated. When I migrans mailbox from one server to the second file subscribe "/" is replaced by a point "." the first file server subscription: & BB4EMQRJBDgENQ-& BD8EMAQ, BDoEOA-/firstname.secondname after migration to the second server: & BB4EMQRJBDgENQ-& BD8EMAQ, BDoEOA-.firstname.secondname on the second server before migration mailbox was not. Hi, I am trying to convert email box in mbox format to maildir++. It converts all folders except INBOX. For example: dsync -D -v -f -u 'info(a)example.org' mirror 'maildir:~/Maildir' prints: dsync(info(a)example.org): Info: Sport: only in source So it converts Sport folder, but INBOX folder is ignored. dovecot.conf contains: mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u File /var/mail/info(a)example.org contains email messages. Guys, In the file /etc/dovecot-pgsql.conf I have driver = pgsql connect = host=localhost dbname=ivr.db user=ivr password=passwd default_pass_scheme = PLAIN password_query = SELECT password FROM embedded_device WHERE username='%u' user_query = SELECT home, uid, gid FROM embedded_device WHERE username='%u' In the table embedded_device there is a field called PIN. My plugin has the "user" and the "pin_value". What I want to do from the plugin is the following: UPDATE embedded_device SET PIN=pin_value WHERE username=user; Questions: Is there a way to locate the exiting database open connection? Is there a way to use the dovecot sql API to set the value of field? I have been looking for examples and have not been very successful. Regards, John

The new configuration schema is very flexible and much better than the "monolithic" file. The configuration conversion utility is very useful. No issue to report, the logfile is clean. The only difference between 2.0 and the previous version is the RIM server. Some users have configured their blackberry to synchronize the phone with their mailbox in IMAP. Previously RIM kept a connection open, after upgrading to 2.0, RIM opens a connection and then closes it. This is not an issue, because the synchronization is ok, and I think that is better this way than to keep an oper socket. Just for curiosity: it happens only to me and why this happens? [Dovecot] Plugin for XFS project quota

Hi, I just finished writing a small plugin that reports XFS project quota in de IMAP component of Dovecot (1.2, currently). It was written to fill the needs of our organization but someone else might find this useful as well. In its current form it's not suitable for inclusion in the generic quota backend (see “Drawbacks”). Features: - every mailbox/folder can have its own project ID; - every project ID is mapped to a quota “root”; - caching to ensure reasonable performance; - Debian APT repository available; - LGPL 3 (just like Dovecot itself). Drawbacks: - quota are readonly, you'll have to manage limits and project assignment yourself; - IMAP only: I tried to write a generic quota backend, but the current setup of the quota plugin does not really seem to permit this; - extremely Linux-specific: assumes devices to be available under /dev/block/<maj>:<min> (this is valid for at least Debian lenny); - received only very limited testing; - no documentation whatsoever. hi, my mail_location looks like: mail_location = maildir:/imap/spool/%d/%1n/%n:INDEX=/imap/spool/% d/indexes/%1n/%n for example: /imap/spool/domain.foo/a/anton/new The problem is, that the user log in with only the username and no domainpart. So, Dovecot looks into: /imap/spool/a/anton/new what isn't correct. We created an LDAP entry in which domain the user is and searching for a way, to get it working. So, only what I want is to use our customfield as domainpart for the mail_location. Postfix works perfect and delivers the messages in the correct folder. any idea? cu denny

Hi folks, I've got a few thousand accounts that I'd like to convert from mbox to maildir. I'm looking at using convert-tool from the command line to do this, but I'm uncertain about the command line syntax, so I hope someone can take a moment to go over this with me. I'm running dovecot 1.1.6 on this system. Mail accounts are not tied to UNIX system accounts, I'm using the dovecot LDA, users do not have home directories, everything is controlled from a database, and mail directories take the form of: /var/spool/mail/<domainname>/<username>/... The mail directories contain mbox-style spool files, including "inbox" and any user-created mbox-format folders. The entire hierarchy is owned by vmail.vmail. I'd like to batch-convert these offline in such a way that it's transparent to users. Here's what I have so far: ------------------------------------------------------------ mv ${user} ${user}-mbox convert_tool ${user} \ /var/spool/mail/${domain}/${user} \ mbox:/var/spool/mail/${domain}/${user}-mbox:\ INBOX=/var/spool/mail/${domain}/${user}-mbox/inbox \ maildir:/var/spool/mail/${domain}/${user} ------------------------------------------------------------ (sorry about that incomprehensibly long command line, I tried to break it intelligently) ...then I'll change the "mail" field returned by the database query to include maildir instead of mbox. I'll wrap the whole thing in a script and do it in one run. Is this correct usage of convert_tool's command line options? The thing that confuses me is the "home directory" command line option, not sure what that's for, as my mail users don't have home directories...at least not in the UNIX sense, does it mean something else? Will the users notice anything different here, with respect to UIDs, indices, or anything like that? If this is completely the wrong way to do it, I'm not opposed to using a different tool like mb2md.pl, but I looked at that and couldn't quite figure out how to make it work within my current directory structure. [Dovecot] performance problems with {s,m}dbox

using rc3 and with the latest pigeonhole, I had problems with dovecot (deliver) keeping up with high volumes of E-mail. I tried sdbox, mdbox, and cyrdir all with similar (failed) result. using the default Maildir I had no problems. I did not try mbox. The problems seemed to happen when there were multiple deliver's running to the same folder I had defined in my sieve rules, either it would timeout and fail, or timeout and get delivered to my inbox, crash, or eventually halt because the queue would reach 20,000 messages which is the maximum with my postfix configuration. Everything was fine when I was using Maildir, no errors and no sieve errors/timeouts. perhaps it is more of an issue with pigeonhole than sieve, but thought I would post my experience using dbox, since it sounded like it was a winner based on performance. [Dovecot] Dovecot and SSD

I'm considering setting up my own mailserver with Dovecot 2.0 (as soon as it's out) and SSD. I'm debating whether it's worth it or not. I have been running a mailserver with the Dovecot 1.1 train for a couple of years and it's been flawless and amazing. I'm thinking about using either FreeBSD 8.1 w/ZFS or OpenBSD 4.8-beta on a 64 GB or 80 GB SSD (Corsair or Intel) using Dovecot 2.0 and mdbox. It seems like mdbox would benefit the most from an SSD because reads would be extremely fast while minimal writes (comparatively) take place due to the way mdbox is structured. I guess what I'm saying is that even if the SSD has average to slow write speeds the fast read speeds would make a big difference in many operations. Any thoughts? Alternately, run either option on a hard drive with indexes on fast flash memory. Anyone tried something like that? Thank you. Bryan

[Dovecot] relay access denied problem thru iphone imap auth

I'm using postfix smtpd / dovecot. Running imaps, imap, pop3s, pop3. I have a ssl certificate setup. Everything works fine via IMAP except sending to an email from outside the network to a recipient outside the network. The problem is when someone (and this is being tested thru the iphone email client configured to use imap) logs in, they can read messages but cannot send to an address outside my network, assuming they are logged in outside the network. If you they are logged in inside the network, they can send to anyone just fine. Hi, I was wondering if I could get some help with Dovecot. I have just recently set up a mail server that runs on Ubuntu Server 10.04. It has got the current version of postfix and Dovecot. I have also got the squirrelmail set up as my webmail. Everything is fine. However, I have been reading some emails posted by Dovecot users regarding Dovecot LDA. The command is for the storage of a numeric PIN field in a database. The database is PostgreSQL. Another table in the database defines the minimum and maximum length of the numeric PIN field. Hi, I'm currently restructuring my mail archives and migrated from a decade and a half old procmail supported solution to sieve. While doing so I often found that I'd like to filter a bunch of messages (with "bunch" in the area of 1-10K) with my shiny new sieve script. I found in the wiki a way to do that: http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/RefilterMail And it works well, it picks the mails via IMAP and resubmits them to dovecot-lda. But unfortunately the IMAP flags including \Sent, \Flagged etc are lost in the process. I started checking for other solutions beside getmail that might extract the imap flags as well, but I wouldn't know how to pass them to dovecot-lda. Would it make sense to suggest to have dovecot offer this kind of reprocessing itself? That way nothing would get lost in any transition. -- http://ATrpms.net/

[Dovecot] using Lazy_Expunge to enforce retention policy

Hi, I've been experimenting with using Lazy_Expunge as a tool to enforce document retention policies (by keeping users from deleting emails forever, instead expiring them after a set time). My problem is, how do I keep the user from deleting/expunging mails *inside the expunge folder itself*? I am using dovecot-1.2.10 built from FreeBSD's ports tree, and I am using the following settings for the "expunged" folder of Lazy_Expunge, as part of the "three namespaces" approach suggested in the wiki: # namespaces for lazy_expunge plugin: namespace private { prefix = .EXPUNGED/ separator = / location = maildir:/usr/local/vpopmail/domains/%d/%n/EXPUNGED } When a user expunges mail, it shows up in the folder listed just fine. But if the user expunges mail from /that/ folder, it's gone forever, which defeats the purpose in regard to "enforcing retention." As a partial workaround, I tried adding hidden=yes and list=no to the setting, and restarting dovecot: # namespaces for lazy_expunge plugin: namespace private { prefix = .EXPUNGED/ separator = / location = maildir:/usr/local/vpopmail/domains/%d/%n/EXPUNGED hidden = yes list = no } The problem is, while this does indeed *hide* the namespace from the user, it doesn't prevent them from *using* it if they know about it - I discovered this because Thunderbird still "remembered" the namespace from before I hid it; experimenting confirmed that, yes, I could still use Thunderbird to go into my expunged folder and permanently delete any email in it. If I remove the account from Thunderbird *completely* and reset it up from scratch, I can no longer "see" the namespace - but that's weak security at best, as I can still manually navigate to it and wreak havoc. expire_dict = proxy::expire I found this expire_dict somewhere, might have been the 1.x wiki, but on the expire plugin page there is no mention of it. I am trying to troubleshoot why my mysql table has no entries. Do I need this line? Is that correct for using mysql? [Dovecot] Dovecot and LDAP - virtual hosting problem

Hello, I have a small ISP and we have a dovecot for virtual mail hosting with a postfix and openldap as backend. Now the problem is that there is one primary domain (example.com) and many other virtual domains with different users. When user from primary domain logs in, he is using username as his username (without domain part) and when user from virtual domain logs in, he uses username@virtualdomain as his username. I don't know how to make dovecot-ldap.conf to authenticate both users from the same ldap tree. My ldap tree is organized like: ou=people,o=example.com,dc=acme ou=people,o=somevirtdomain.cp,dc=acme and so on... The only one thing that comes on my mind is something like (default domain) in dovecot.conf (if %d is empty then %d=examle.com, othewise...) I know this option does not exist but is just comes on my mind... Maybe some specific filter_search or something like that? Than you for any help in advance.

[Dovecot] Problem with hard links in lda - please help

Hello, I'm trying to enable hardlinks for messages sent to mutiple users. (I need this because I have mailing lists with 5000 users used many times a day). I've read that, to do this, I have to write a script that uses the /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver command in this way: deliver -p <FILE> -d <USER1> -d <USER2> Of course, I enabled the "socket listen" option in the configuration file to get the command line work, and set the maildir_copy_with_hardlinks = yes The deliver command works, so I have the messages correctly in the "new" directory in the maildir folder. But if I list the files, they have the "links" number = 1, so I see that the file was copied, not hardlinked! I see in the page http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA that is possible, in fact it says Parameters [...] -p <path>: Path to the mail to be delivered instead of reading from stdin. If using maildir the file is hard linked to the destination if possible. This allows a single mail to be delivered to multiple users using hard links, but currently it also prevents deliver from updating cache file so it shouldn't be used unless really necessary. [Dovecot] antispam plugin troubleshooting

I built the dovecot antispam plugin and renamed it so I could have multiple backends installed at the same time. http://johannes.sipsolutions.net/Projects/dovecot-antispam I tried recompiling antispam without renaming the .so and I get the same result indicated below. All other plugins and the system as a whole has been functioning normally. Only when I add antispam plugin does dovecot not start and perform as expected. [Dovecot] imap core dumping on signal 10

We are just trying to bring up a new server and chose to use Dovecot rather than the uw-imap from our previous servers. At this point I am just testing with some throw away accounts using squirrelmail. I can load my inbox, but then the imap connection is lost. I presume you need some real information to get your teeth into, so this is going to get a little long. I'll give you three things below: 1. a piece of /var/adm/dovecot.log, 2. the output of `dovecot -n`, and then 3. the full gdb trace back on the core file. This should have been done only for "default ACLs", but with Maildir the INBOX directory is the same as the default ACL directory, so this mixup happened. This bug exists only in v1.2.x releases. Other fixes: - Fixed iconv() crash when it was processing several kilobytes of broken continuous input. This mainly could have caused a problem with IMAP SEARCH. Possibly also with some Sieve checks. - If MIME encoded-words contained line feeds, Dovecot logged cache corruption errors. - mbox: Renaming mailbox under newly created dir didn't move index directory. - mbox: When generating envelope to From_-line, don't append a second @owndomain if username already has one.

Hello, I installed dovecot via Debians apt package manager. The passwords are stored as SHA256 hash in a PostgreSQL database. default_pass_scheme in dovecot-sql.conf is set to SHA256. [Dovecot] Doveadm protocol for parallel user processing

A lot of doveadm commands process users' mails. They can optionally process either a single user or multiple users (e.g. -A = all, -u '*(a)domain.org'). For example to expunge old mails from everyone's Trash, you'd use: doveadm expunge -A mailbox Trash savedbefore 30d The problem is, this doesn't work with the new director way of doing proxying. Only a single server can access a user's mails safely, so this command can't be run safely if there are multiple mail servers. It's also a bit problematic for regular proxying, but it's especially problematic with director: Since users aren't permanently assigned anywhere, it's not even possible to build a user <-> host mapping and run the command only for those users in their assigned server. First I started thinking about adding another lib-storage backend that supports proxying to another server, maybe via IMAP or maybe via another protocol. Maybe I should do that some day anyway, but it seems a bit complex for this task. Then I also realized that even if all users are on local server, it would probably finish faster if doveadm could handle users in parallel in separate processes (due to disk I/O latencies and maybe other latencies). So, it seems like it would be a good idea to make doveadm internally a client/server architecture. When you start doveadm, it would be only the "brain" part, which connects to the worker doveadms either via local UNIX socket or to remote servers. Admin could configure how many doveadm worker processes the brain should connect per server (could be a per-server setting). So, what's needed to make this happen? 1. The actual client/server split and the protocol. Probably can be really simple and won't be anything interesting. Or maybe it becomes more interesting once I start thinking about it more, we'll see. :) 2. Authentication. 3. TLS-protection? After merging code from dovecot-2.0-sslstream branch this should be pretty easy. Although Dovecot should finally then add support for checking that CommonName/etc match the server name. Authentication -------------- For local UNIX sockets that are 0600 root, the authentication wouldn't be necessary. It could internally check that if the listener socket has these permissions, it would just announce that doveadm is already authenticated. Otherwise, and especially for TCP connections, there should be authentication. I was thinking about using already existing master users for this. Doveadm client says "I'm <masteruser>, my password is <pass>, and I want to access <user>'s mails". Auth process does the authentication and replies either success or failure, just like for similar IMAP/POP3/etc logins. It's possible to restrict what users a master user can log in as, like admin(a)domain.org could only log in as *(a)domain.org. This means that you could also enable doveadm protocol for external users, and let the domain administrators use doveadm directly to manage their own domain's users. PLAIN authentication mechanism would be easy to support. But this might be a good time to also introduce client side SASL library to Dovecot to support other auth mechanisms. But then again, maybe it doesn't really matter.. Privilege dropping ------------------ I hate it that with multiple UIDs doveadm processes currently have to be run as root and they only temporarily drop privileges. With client/server split it would be possible to get rid of this. Each doveadm worker process would then handle only a single user and then exit. This would be optional similar to how login processes are now, e.g.: service doveadm { # 1 = default = one user access per process, 0 = unlimited user accesses service_count = 1 } LMTP privilege dropping ----------------------- Completely unrelated to doveadm, but due to the above doveadm privilege dropping thinking I also started thinking about LMTP. It's also annoying that it runs as root, and only temporarily drops privileges. It could also avoid this by saving a mail only to a single user per process. The problem is that there can be multiple RCPT TO:s in a same session, but this can be handled by treating them similarly than when using LMTP proxying: Just connect to localhost again and proxy the mail there for each user separately. This could also be optionally done only when the process UID differs from the destionation user's UID. When? ----- These are too invasive changes to v2.0, so I guess they'll wait until v2.1. Luckily there won't be any hugely destabilizing changes going into v2.1, so maybe v2.1.0 release won't be too many months after v2.0.0. :)

[Dovecot] Upgrade 1.1 to 1.2 double check

Read what I could find on possible upgrade issues and saw only one that might be a problem. I don't think it will but figured it was worth checking. Hi, in the wiki there's an example script for sending an email to an user that has exceeded his quota. Link: http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Quota/Configuration The dovecot deliver command line is: dovecot-lda -d $USER -o "plugin/quota=maildir:User quota:noenforcing" I wonder about -o: seems to be "undocumented" because I've found no information about this parameter. If this parameter is needed what if I use dict instead of maildir? Is the syntax different? Thanks. -- Daniel

I think I've fixed now all of the bugs ever reported about dsync and I'm hopeful that it's now stable. All the rest of Dovecot looks pretty good too. Maybe v2.0.0 will be out next week. Changes since rc2: * Single-dbox is now called "sdbox" instead of "dbox". "dbox" will stay as an alias for it for now. + Added mail_temp_dir setting, used by deliver and lmtp for creating temporary mail files. Default is /tmp. + doveadm: Added "director map" command to list user -> host mappings. - imap: Fixed checking if list=children namespace has children. - director: If all login processes died, director stopped reading proxy-notify input and caused future login processes to hang - mail_log plugin configuration was broken - Using more than 2 plugins could have caused broken behavior - mdbox: Race condition fixes related to copying and purging - dsync: Lots of fixes

I need to develop some plugins, but i can't know if is possible to do or not. 1 - There is a way to deny a email to be moved from one folder to another ? example: the user is only allowed to move mails in Spam Folder to Trash Folder. If yes, were i can find a code example or a plugin to extract some idea. 2 - It's possible to deny a user to create a subscription folder ? example: with autocreate plugin, i create a Spam Folder, but if the autocreate is not configured to this user, it can't create manually this same folder. If yes, were i can find a code example or a plugin to extract some idea. Tks !

Hi Timo, I'm using doveadm in my script to create [sm]dboxes. For some reason I forgot to remove the -7 option in my script. I wondered why no mailboxes were created and the script didn't report an error - it checks the exit status from doveadm. Hi, We have our user homedirs on nfs so I enabled nfs parameters in dovecot.conf. Everything works fine but when I want to delete a homedir of a user I can't delete it because I can't remove the .nfs files in the Maildir. I don't want to stop dovecot, remove the homedir and start dovecot. Is there another way to accomplish this. Hi I run dovecot 1.2.11. One of my users turned on MailTags in his AppleMail with the effect that he could not anymore synchronize his imap folders. No error message, just endless waiting. Has anybody experienced a similar behaviour? Thanks John

A relatively recent development that spammers got wind of is users that have username==password, with/without the domain. I am tracking numerous 1-off attempts from bots to gain access to mailboxes this way. Situation isn't made any better if you're also using dovecot as SMTP AUTH provider for I am ashamed to admit I've relayed some spam that way. Would it be possible to deny login if username==password with a (non?)polite/custom message to go change your password to something less obvious ?

Hi, Been having a look at the roadmap on the wiki for Dovecot 2.0 and I was wondering how that's progressing? Are you able to offer a guesstimate on how far it is from stable Timo? Just asking because we're moving to new servers soon and I'm considering using the opportunity to switch from Dovecot/Maildrop/Maildir to Dovecot/deliver/mdbox if 2.0 is likely to be reasonably safe to use in the next month or so. Hello, I have a lot of domains in a mail server, so I make a balanced allocation of mailboxes in the storage disks. That improves performance of access to records. Therefore, I want to overwrite 'mail_location' directive for each user. But I also want to use the modifier 'H' to spray the mailboxes of the same partition in a hash. Then, each user has your own 'mail_location' that I would like load from database. Like this: mdbox:/var/spool/imap/partition1/%256HRu/%u:INDEX=/var/lib/imap/user/% 256HRu/%u partition1 is in range [partition1 .. partiton7] In my tests the '%256HRu/%u' kind of 'mail_location' is not being interpreted by Dovecot. Hello, i have an issue with vpopmail, this created a sub folder named "0" and all the new users created inside this folder into the domain folder. Weel i don understand why vpopmail do that, but i want to know if the option in dovecot.conf namespaces i can make it to search the Maildir in both directories. name domain/user & name domain/0/name user. CAn you help me??? Any options.
