Dear All, I am trying to configure Virtual mailbox but having issue my squirrelmail is showing following error:- ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server. Query: LSUB "" "*" I have also check Thunderbird but having same issue. [Dovecot] Dovecot 2.0.2 breakes LMTP delivery for me

Hi, I'm onboard Debian Lenny (amd64) and just reverted from 2.0.2-0~auto+4 back to 2.0.1-0~auto+1 because LMTP stopped working completly with the above Package. In my setup delivery is done from exim via LMTP to dovecot (Maildir/ext3). Hi all, We are running "dovecot-1.0.7-7.el5" on a CentOS release 5.5 (Final) box. I know, its an old version, but it cames up with the CentOS release (yum). Anyway. Is there a way to import the certificate, which was generated with "mkcert_dovecot.sh", permanently to the outlook 2003 clients? Every time, when our office 2003 clients fetches there emails (POP3s) from our dovecot server, they will be asked "......, the CN-Name of this certificate doesn't match with the taken Value. Do you want to continue with this server?. sorry for the poor english translation. Here in german (for some german people): Der Server, mit dem Sie verbunden sind, verwendet ein Sicherheitszertifikat, das nicht verifiziert werden konnte. Der CN-Name des Zertifikates stimmt nicht mit dem übergebenen Wert überein. Möchten Sie diesen Server weiterhin verwenden? many thanks for some hints Richard

This is definitely an operator error issue, but I'm under a bit of pressure. I updated our 1.1.20 installation to 2.0.1 over the weekend and discovered this morning that it's insisting on TLS imap on port 143 as well as port 993 What am I missing? Thanks in advance Alan

Hi all I am upgrading a mail system. So I installed aside a new server with debian lenny dovecot 1.2 from backports , postfix 2.5, mysql 5. I recovered the database from the actual production system with a dump. I am trying to convert from mbox to maildir on our mail server here at work. The specs are as follows: Fedora 11 x86-64 dovecot-1.2.11-3.fc11.x86_64 postfix-2.5.6-3.fc11.x86_64 dovecot-managesieve-1.2.11-3.fc11.x86_64 We are currently using mbox format with the users INBOX set to /var/spool/mail/username and other mail is in /home/username/Mail. I would like to migrate to maildir format. I tried using the convert plugin as the wiki suggested: mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir protocol imap { mail_plugins = convert } protocol pop3 { mail_plugins = convert } plugin { convert_mail = mbox:/home/%u/Mail:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u } When doing this I get this scrolling in the /var/log/maillog... Sep 11 14:41:38 roark dovecot: IMAP(username): Mailbox conversion: Lock creation timeouted Sep 11 14:41:39 roark dovecot: IMAP(username): Fatal: Mailbox conversion failed, exiting Sep 11 14:56:53 roark dovecot: POP3(otheruser): Mailbox conversion: rename(/home/otheruser/Mail, /home/otheruser/Mail-converted) failed: Directory not empty it does this for some users only. Mine for instance never errored and completed perfectly from what I can tell (other than the new mail issue below). The server load has skyrocketed though, so that is most likely part of it. Also, while testing this, new mail was not delivered to the maildir but rather to the old mbox in /var/spool/mail/username. The new mail never showed up until I switched the config back over to the mbox settings. Am I missing something here? Thanks for any insight -- Donny B.

In my setup I use ldap to store quota information, and I want to accomplish the following: per-user spamassassin rules (MDA style), but my setup has the following requeriments: mail_uid= entrega mail_gid= entrega LDA & SIEVE: sieve_dir=/buzones/my_domain/%2.26Hn/%2.200Hn/%n/sieve/ mail_location=maildir:/buzones/my_domain/%2.26Hn/%2.200Hn/%n I have been reading in the wiki, but I am not sure how I can have in $mail_location/user1 a .spamassassin directory per-user and lda+sieve work together to make spam rules by user Regards Javier

I upgraded today to Dovecot 2.0.2 and Pigeonhole-0.2.0 based on debian lenny. Hi, i'm trying to relay local post from Postfix to Dovecot-lda. It does appear that the quota gets out of sync. From the entries I checked an email is often being delivered shortly before the error (as above). Halo, Please can you explain why this is advantage over a hardware load balancer. I fail to see advantage if anything it add in more point of failure, with several hundred thousand user, we can ill afford to mess around or add to complexity, sometime keeping it simple is simply way to be, when use qmail/vpopmail, we never had one failure or problem, ever, we very proud of this record so our users. if director service assign 60K user to each front end, how it handle if 5K simultaneous user login, but all 5K happen to be assign to that one machine, it do all work whilst other 7 server sit there do nothing negating what the LB is design for? Is it really worth it? Do we really need this, or just let foundry switch handle it as it does now. We also have 24 front end SMTP server, these deliver mail to netapp filer, all 24 plus 8 pop3 server and 2 webmail imap server all mount /vmail, so all access same maildir. it seem work very effective thus far and for many many year when we use qmail and vpopmail. Thaks

[Dovecot] Sub-Sub-Subfolders not shown after converting from maildir to mdbox

Hi again, I just recognized a problem concerning subfolders after converting from maildir to mdbox. Thunderbird and SeaMonkey don´t show folders that are subfolders of subfolders. Have a look at the filesystem: discovery:/var/mail/domain.tld/patrick/mdbox/mailboxes/Folder1/Folder2# ls -l insgesamt 8 drwx------ 2 vmail vmail 4096 5. Sep 23:42 dbox-Mails drwx------ 3 vmail vmail 4096 5. Sep 23:42 Folder3 Using Thunderbird or Seamonkey, Folder1 and Folder2 are listed and can be subscribed to but Folder3 never gets listed. If I create Folder4 as a new subfolder from Folder2 it works, so the problem only exists with existing folders from converted maildirs. I had to use a namespace for the convert from my old Courier IMAP. Any hints? Hello Dovecot users, I have finally finished the first release of Pigeonhole for Dovecot v2.0. The most notable change from previous Dovecot v1.2 Sieve/ManageSieve releases is that all is now integrated in a single package and there is no need to patch Dovecot anymore to gain ManageSieve support. Changelog v0.2.0: * Merged Sieve and ManageSieve packages into a single Pigeonhole package. There is also no need to patch Dovecot anymore to gain ManageSieve support. Version numbering of previous Sieve releases is continued as v0.2.0. The sources originally branched off from Sieve v0.1.5 and ManageSieve v0.11.4, but the NEWS history of much more recent releases for Dovecot v1.2 is included since these changes are all included in this release as well. * The ManageSieve service now binds to TCP port 4190 by default due to the IANA port assignment for the ManageSieve service. When upgrading from v1.2, this should be taken into account. The service can be configured manually to listen on both 2000 and 4190. * The Dovecot configuration now calls the ManageSieve protocol 'sieve' in stead of 'managesieve' because it is registered as such with IANA. The binaries and the services are still called managesieve and managesieve-login. * The binary representation of a compiled Sieve script is updated to include source code locations of all commands and arguments. This is implemented in a similar manner as such debug information is included in some system executables and libraries (DWARF-like). Run-time errors can now always refer to the proper line number in the Sieve source script. * The Sieve plugin is adapted to work properly with the new LMTP service introduced with Dovecot v2.0. The same plugin is used for both LDA and LMTP. * The 'sieve_subaddress_sep' setting for the Sieve subaddress extension is now known as 'recipient_delimiter'. Although the deprecated sieve_subaddress_sep setting is still recognized for backwards compatibility, it is recommended to update the setting to the new name, since the new LMTP service also use the recipient_delimiter setting. * ManageSieve: changed default IMPLEMENTATION capability to from 'Dovecot' to 'Dovecot Pigeonhole'. * Renamed the sieved tool to sieve-dump. The original name was somewhat confusing. * Updated man pages to match style and structure of new Dovecot man pages. * Made testsuite commands more uniform and cleaned up many of the testsuite scripts. Some minor new tests were added in the process. + Simplified string matching API to use abstract string lists as data sources. This will also make implementing the index extension easier in the future. + Significantly improved trace debugging with the sieve-test tool. The full execution of the script can be examined, including the matched values and keys of the respective Sieve test commands. The executed statements are listed with their line number (and code address when requested). The level of detail is configurable from the command line. + The SIEVE and NOTIFY capabilities reported by the ManageSieve protocol can now be configured manually. If left unconfigured, the capabilities are determined from the default Sieve and ManageSieve configuration. User-specific capabilities aren't reported until after authentication. + Significantly improved file error handling. This means that administrators get a more useful and informative log message when file operations fail. The most notable example is that when the LDA Sieve plugin is trying to store a binary for a global script, the resulting failure message also points the administrator towards pre-compiling the script with sievec. + Added runtime argument value checking for several commands (redirect, date, vacation). When variables are used, these checks cannot be performed at compiletime. A proper runtime error now is produced when invalid data is encountered. + UTF8 validity of fileinto command argument is now checked either at compile time or at runtime. Previously, it was not checked until the store action was executed. + Validity of IMAP flags for the imap4flags extension is now checked also at runtime. Previously, it was not checked until the store action was executed. + Simplified and restructured error handling. Also made sure that user-caused errors are no longer written to the Dovecot master/LDA log. - Multiscript: fixed duplicate implicit keep caused by erroneous execution state update. - Prevented assertion failure due to currupt binary string representation. If the string was missing a final \0 character an assertion was produced in stead of a binary corruption error. - Imap4flags: fixed bug in setflag command; when parameter was a stringlist, only the last item was actually set. - Variables extension: fixed :length set modifier to recognize utf8 characters in stead of octets. - Testsuite: prevented innocent warning messages, i.e. those that are part of the test, from showing up by default. - ManageSieve/Sieve storage: fixed error handling of PUTSCRIPT commmand; save commit errors would not make the command fail. - ManageSieve: enforced protocol syntax better with some of the commands; some commands allowed spurious extra arguments. - Fixed Sieve script name checking to properly handle length limit and added 0x00ff as invalid character. - Removed spurious old stdio.h (top) includes; these caused compile issues on specific systems. - Fixed default Sieve capability (as reported by ManageSieve): extra extensions spamtest, spamtestplus and virustest were enabled by default. These should, however, only be enabled when properly configured and there is no default configuration. Hi, I am still tuning my dovecot, but I find myself very confortable with it. I am going to structure my imap folder with a new namespace (somthing you cannot do with GMail :) and I can choose the mailbox format. What is the difference between the two mailbox format "mbox" and "maildir"? I know mbox is older, but there is a good reason to use maildir instead? Hi, I'm using Dovecot 2.0.1, and I log to a custom syslog facility (local0) in the main configuration (I want a separate log file, but I want to make use of rsyslogd's capabilities). I overwrite the syslog facility for LDA (mail) to have all delivery related stuff in /var/log/mail.log, and that works fine. I tried to do the same for LMTP with protocol lmtp { syslog_facility = mail } but this has no effect, LMTP logs to local0. Is this supposed to work, or is this not implemented at all? If not, is using a logfile in main config, but syslog in lmtp supported? Thanks Rainer

I start my dovecot with the "-c /path/to/custom/config" option so I can run multiple instances. Been trying out 2.0.1 so I can upgrade my boxes cleanly, but I require managesieve. So after installing the latest sources of the Pigeonhole plugin, I'm getting this when trying to start dovecot: # /usr/local/sbin/dovecot -c /usr/local/etc/dovecot/dovecot_custom.conf managesieve(root): Fatal: Error reading configuration: net_connect_unix(/usr/local/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf) failed: No such file or directory doveconf: Error: managesieve-login: dump-capability process returned 89 Running Dovecot 2.0.1 on FreeBSD 8.1. Hi All, we are experiencing another strange problem after upgrading to 2.0.1 from 1.2. Many people's client aree-retrieving mail from server due to some problem with dovecot-uidlist file. Looking at log file seem that all file content is sometime duplicated and appended to the and of same file. It look as another process was accesing and trying to modify uidlist table. Our setup has a load balance (dovecot director) and three backend server. All of them use 2.0.1. MTA is a cluster of postfix that deliver mail to load balancer by LMTP. How can I collect some more information? or, better, solve it? Hi, I'm currently using Dovecot 1.1.18 with storage over NFS and there's been the occasional corrupt index. I'm going to be installing a new set of servers soon and would like to start using Dovecot 2.0. I've had a look at the bit there is on the new Dovecot director, but I'm not totally sure how it's intended to be used. Should I install Dovecot on the software load balancers (IMAP/POP3 and other services balanced by haproxy) and configure the director on there? I'm also using maildrop at the moment but would like to switch to Dovecot deliver at some stage. Since mail is delivered to a random mail server (they both have access to the NFS shares), won't I run into the same index problem? Should I look at per user transports before then or can director also be used to effect Dovecot deliver? Thanks Guy -- Don't just do something...sit there!

Whilst documenting LAYOUT=maildir++ under dbox, that got me thinking: Can we specify :LAYOUT=maildir++ with mbox? If I have it right, this should then remove the problem of not being able to have messages and mail subfolders in the same mail folder. So for example if we had mail location specified as: mail_location = mbox:~/mail:LAYOUT=maildir++ we would have files: ~/mail/inbox - file storing messages in INBOX ~/mail/.foo - file storing messages in mail folder "foo" ~/mail/.foo.bar - file storing messages in mail folder "foo/bar" and I think all of Dovecot's indexes would go under ~/mail/.imap Bill

Hello, is it safe to use arg_new_human_date() from src/lib-storage/mail-search-register-human.c instead of arg_new_date() inside src/lib-storage/mail-search-register-imap.c? The benefit is ability to use interval based search rules, e.g., SINCE 2days. I run it for couple of days and looks fine, used for virtual folders. This kind of search I missed for usage on laptop - I have pretty huge inboxes, thunderbird was over 20% CPU all the time. I switched on using dovecot locally and thunderbird connected to it, my common searches (before: thunderbird's "save as folder" searches) are virtual folders. Everything works great, cpu usage is less than 1% (I have to say that I also moved many filtering rules (for sorting incoming messages to folders) from TB to be done by imapfilter, but the reason was mainly sorting flexibility and rescanning folders). If all is safe, would it be considered for addition in the future version? The patch is trivial, I can leave with patching every release, but I believe is a nice thing to have. Afaik, should not break IMAP SEARCH specs, being an extended version. An alternative would be to add 'X-' commands (e.g., X-SINCE 2days). Or something like that. I'm looking at doing that anyway, however it would be much easier to train the users if the server says "folder full"

Past that point, the index of ~/Maildir/.folder/cur is mostly cached until you hit about 16,000 messages(files) on GFS2 and some people are insisting on 32k+ files in one folder with the odd few trying 65k or more (I'm surprised their clients don't break). For info sake: we have Dovecot running on a pair of dedicated dual E5530 (quad-core X86 1300MHZ FSB cpu) servers (RH cluster+GFS2) with 24Gb RAM apiece and ~2TB of 8Gb/s san-attached storage available. There are only ~250 accounts but there's around 600Gb in the maildir folder areas and another 300Gb in a separate dedicated inbox area - and I believe there's another 1TB of stuff in client local folders we're trying to pull back to the servers in order to simplify backups. Even with this kind of horsepower available, over-large folders can render the setup completely unresponsive for minutes at a time. I know this is a case of "work smarter, not harder", but I'm facing major delays until we're able to change the on-disk storage format. Alan

[Dovecot] mdbox: Cannot create subfolder called "dbox-Mails" (2.0beta5)

I am trying out "mdbox" under Dovecot 2.0beta5. Looking in the "mailboxes" directory under the mdbox storage root ("~/dbox" in my case), I can see that the mail folders are mapped into filesystem directories. But Dovecot seems to put all the message list information ("dovecot.index.cache", "dovecot.index.log") for any given mail folder into a directory called "dbox-Mails"... But this directory name exists in the same namespace as that used for mail subfolders... So this means we cannot create a mail subfolder whose name is "dbox-Mails"! I concede that this eventuality may be unlikely, but when designing in a green field, surely we should avoid such obvious pitfalls? Surely we would want to make it so that these objects exist in different namespaces, so that mail folders can be created with any name? So perhaps the directory "dbox-Mails" should use a character in its name which could not be used in mail folder names. Or mail folder names could have a non-identity mapping into directory names such that the directory name can never be "dbox-Mails". Regards, Bill

[Dovecot] Specify auth service for protocols

Hi all, I'm building a mail system where two machines are functioning both as POP3/IMAP-proxy (using dovecot 1.2.12) and SMTP-server with authentication for outgoing mail. The SMTP-server is postfix with dovecot SASL as authentication backend. User credentials for SMTP auth as well as the mapping from account to final server for the proxy is stored in a MySQL-database which dovecot queries. As I want the POP3/IMAP-proxy to accept any username and password (as the final POP3/IMAP server takes care of the authentication) the passdb SQL query has the statements "NULL AS password, 'Y' AS nopassword, 'Y' AS proxy" added to the query. As these additions cannot be used in the SQL query for the auth service used by postfix (as users would be able to authenticate with any password) I have defined a second auth service (auth postfix { ... }) in dovecot.conf which is slightly different; it returns the password hash instead of NULL as password and skips the proxy and nopasswd part. This works fine on one server, but on the other one the auth services get mixed up and the service defined for postfix (missing password and proxy stuff) is used by the POP3 and IMAP services and vice versa, which breaks the proxying. I've been trying my best to find any difference between the configuration of the two machines, but without result. The configurations are simply copies of each other. So, to finally arrive at my question: Is there any way to specify which authentication service is to be used by each protocol in dovecot.conf? Or is the solution instead to rewrite the passdb-query to take the service into account and return 'Y' AS proxy when the service is postfix and 'N' AS proxy when the service is POP3 or IMAP as I then would be able to use only one authentication backend? Hi, I'm pretty new to dovecot's codebase and trying to write a plugin which performs certain plugins if new mail arrives in a user's mailbox. I saw the mail-log plugin and was playing around with it but it seems to not create events if new mails arrive but only if mail are copied or saved from an IMAP connection. This applies across all common filesystems with the threshold differing depending on the FS. GFS2 pretty much _STOPS_ for 10 minutes when users put 65k+ messages in one folder... I'm currently running 1.1.20 but looking to update (RHEL5 cluster installation)

I was thinking about documentation for alternate storage. I could write the page, but I currently have so many unknowns that I think it would be better to gather some more information before writing the first draft. Note that I don't necessarily fully understand all the surrounding concepts, so I could have written something below which is based on a (vague) belief. Please correct me if I am wrong, or even if it's sort-of right but doesn't quite hit the point squarely. We might want to have a name for the wiki page. Perhaps "AlternateStorage"? Of course if it only applies to dbox, then another idea is to make it a section on the page "MailboxFormat/dbox". All suggestions gratefully received. I would be interested in an overview of what alternate storage is. It seems to be a way of transparently moving message data to alternare storage, with the idea that the alternate storage may be on a different filesystem which may be cheaper and/or slower than the main storage, which may be an economic way to store messages where the fastest access to them is less important. It is transparent in as much as IMAP/POP users will not normally be able to tell if any given message has been moved to alternate storage. A single mail folder can end up containing a mixture of messages stored in main storage and alternate storage. (Another question begged here of what consistent term should be used to refer to the main storage. Could be "main storage", "normal storage", "ordinary storage".) Also I would be interested to know the development/stability status of alternate storage: experimental / alpha / beta / stable. Also I would be interested to know the applicability against mailbox formats: mbox / maildir / sdbox / mdbox / cydir. Also I would be interested to know which data gets moved to the alternate storage, and which data stays in the main storage: message-data / control-data / index-data / combined-control-and-index-data. Also I would be interested to know how data can be moved to alternate storage. Seems to be that is only done by invocation of "doveadm altmove". There is a page for that already so we can link to that. Also it would be interesting to have some idea of how it works. For example there might be an "alternate storage" flag in the indexes, or Dovecot tries the main location first and if not found there then it tries the alternate storage. Just a brief overview, and any pertinent ramifications of that. Bill

Hi, I'm switching from UW-imap to dovecot 2.0.1 and was wondering about the mail_location config: mail_location = mbox:~/.:INBOX=/var/mail/%u Notice '.' in '~/.' above. This seems to resolve the ~/mail problem when switching from UW-imap (ie, no 'mail' prefix). doc/wiki/Migration.UW.txt doesn't mention using '~/.', so I was wondering whether there are any gotchas anyone can think of. [Dovecot] fts, solr, and client support

I've been playing around with the fts plugins and currently have solr up and running. While the initial indexing time is pretty rough, the search performance is impressive. I've run into a problem though- so far as I can tell, thunderbird (and most other popular clients?) won't actually take advantage of it. Even using thunderbird's advanced search and checking the 'run serach on server' box doesn't push the search to the server. If most popular clients don't support it, there doesn't seem much point in setting it up; which is a shame, solr beats the snot out of the built in search for thunderbird. That said, is anyone running any of the fts plugins in a large scale environment? If so, what kind of scaling issues do you see? Hi, qmail-ldap uses four LDAP attributes for handling autoreplies in qmail-local: - deliverymode (to see whether the autoreply should be send) - mailreplytext, which is a base64 encoded multiline string* - mailreplystart and mailreplystop, unix dates I'm wondering how this could be handled with Dovecot (2.0) in the most easier way. All I could find out so far: - patching the code - writing a plugin (it it possible to get these LDAP attributes in the LMTPd with a single userdb-lookup and get it from the plugin during a new mail event? Any examples?) - conditionally provide these values to a sieve script and process them accordingly (the base64 string and maybe the dates seem to be hard for the first glimpse) the mad stuff: - using an LD_PRELOAD library, which emulates per user sieve scripts according to LDAP lookups (gives a lot more flexibility) - an LMTP proxy/server, which does all this and forwards the traffic to the Dovecot LMTPd/deliver process * a sample mailreplytext looks like this: '''%HEADER% Content-type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" távol vagyok''' (of course this is in UTF-8).

Hi all, we are experencing some, may be strange, slowness in our dovecot/postfix mail system. We have three dovecot 2.0.1 server with LMTP, POP3 and IMAP enabled. Three shared OCFS2 filesystem are used for mail storage. We have too a load balancer based on dovecot director in front of these three server. Our SMTP cluster receives mail and send by LMTP to load balancer. Everything work flowless, but sometime, under heavy load, three server slow down a lot. Our mail gateway logs a lot of: status=deferred (host 10.194.1.20[10.194.1.20] said: 451 4.4.0 Remote server not answering (DATA output timeout) IP 10.194.1.20 is dovecot director. Looking at mbox servers log nothing seem to happen, but stracing lmtp process we can see stat system calls to all Maildir files, as if dovecot was recalculating quota and regenerating maildirsize file. It happens always when LMTP tries to deliver a mail to an overquota account. Is this possible and right? How can we look deeper in system to have more information? I noticed 2 minor things with the director. 1) if I start 2 directors, but in 1 of them I dont add the other as a director_servers, they both start spamming the logfiles really really fast. I've updated http://wiki2.dovecot.org/MailLocation regarding a typical mail_location entry for dbox. Previously it said: mail_location = dbox:~/dbox but of course "dbox" is now the old name for "sdbox", so the example should be updated to say "sdbox" and there might/ought also to be an example for "mdbox". In http://wiki2.dovecot.org/MailboxFormat/dbox the example mail_location for mdbox is given as "mdbox:~/mdbox", so I have followed that for "MailLocation". So I have changed it to say # single-dbox mail_location = sdbox:~/dbox or: # multi-dbox mail_location = mdbox:~/mdbox I didn't know whether to change the directory for sdbox to "~/sdbox" or to leave it as it is. For the time being I have left it at "~/dbox" --- following the example given should allow new installations of Dovecot 2 to be able to read any existing single-dbox data which used the historically-suggested "~/dbox" location, whilst at the same time avoiding using the old mailbox format name of "dbox". My plugin work even if I include other libs like mysql or wathever I tried to use the "sql-api.h" (lib-sql), but at runtime, I have : "undefined symbol: sql_init", "Fatal: Couldn't load required plugins" Is it possible to use lib-sql api or mysql libs in a plugin ? I've tried with lda or lmtp plugin with the same result... Any idea ? Charly.

Hello, I've been using the dovecot 1.2.x branch server software for a while now. With the advent of the 2.0.x branch going 'stable' I decided to attempt a migration and make use of some of the features that I've not needed before. One of these is the shared folder/namespace feature. No luck. I've hit a wall and can not determine the problem. At the moment it looks like a bug to me, but it may well be that I'm missing some related configuration, or file permission. I can not get the %% variable expansion in a namespace to work. What I end up with, on an IMAP connection is a directory named, for instance, '%h'. The same goes for any of the %% variables used at this point. My current set-up is 'not' the same as the current setup and I'm using virtual users that are not 'live' on the current system. I would really appreciate it if someone could cast an eye over my config and let me know if I've missed something obvious. Thanks. [Dovecot] Dovecot - some more optimisations

I did some more optimisation. Most performance hit in Dovecot do "for loop" in string operations. In one case (in message-parser.c) "for loop" has another "for" inside with the same variable used as iterator. This case is very hard to optimise by compiler. I do changes only in top functions listed in oprofile. Maybe I do more in future. Code was analysed and tested but it's hard to generate all cases. It's working well in production server (I'm monitoring). In istream-crlf.c I've changed one thing. When destination buffer is full after '\r' addition (to dest), It didn't skip '\n' in source buffer. I think this was buggy in earlier code, and '\n' was skipped (this piece of code is used very rare). Please check this out. This can help in huge e-mail systems :P And another problem. Why You use safe_memset instead of memset? Now this function have the largest impact in Dovecot performance. Another on list is t_push. Regards, Len7hir

I was unable to do a virtual mailbox filtering out the contents of other mailbox, for instance I have a virtual/spam mailbox which filter out all the spam thanks to spamassassin. This mailbox is virtual, its description is INBOX -Trash -Trash/* -Junk subject SPAM I'd like to do a simple virtual/ham mbox using this dovecot-virtual INBOX -virtual/spam to: jj(a)gioorgi.com but it seems not working. it does not filter the spam. [Dovecot] Help with Public Folder Configuration

Dear All, I am trying to use Public Folder feature of dovecot but having some confusion with the configuration part as well as understanding the same. Here is output of doveconf -n which i think required to help me - mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir namespace { inbox = yes location = prefix = separator = . type = private } namespace { list = children location = maildir:/var/mail/public prefix = Public. separator = . subscriptions = no type = public } plugin { acl = vfile:/usr/local/dovecot/dovecot-acl/acl } after making this configuration i also created subfolder inside /var/mail/public which looks like following:- mail1:~# less /var/mail/public/ dovecot-acl-list .Public/ mail1:~# less /var/mail/public/.Public/Maildir/ cur/ new/ tmp/ I have changed default permission to [ chown -R vmail:vmail /var/mail ] on base public folder. Now I am able to see the public folder from webmail as well as from thunderbird but no display for .Public folder. I am expecting that .Public folder will be visible to all but no one will be allowed to delete and make any change in that folder, I am also using global ACL in my configuration. Please let me know what i am doing wrong because not getting any error in log, Correct me if i am understanding wrong. Thanks

Seeing a whole bunch of the CLIENTBUGs in the logs since IMP uses imapproxy and relies on the proxy to unselect the mailbox when a LOGOUT is caught. Thus, when we rebuild the connection on the next page connection, we assume that there is no active mailbox (we actually use LIST-STATUS to do folder polling, but we still use STATUS when we only need data on a single mailbox). imapproxy *should* really be using UNSELECT, but that looks like a different (imapproxy) bug. michael

[Dovecot] 2.0 migration weirdnesses: logs and hang

Hello, I'm testing out an upgrade to dovecot 2.0 from 1.2.11, and I've stumbled across two weirdnesses that I need help with. First, I'm only getting one log message: master: Info: Dovecot v2.0.0 starting up After that, while I can connect, log in, read mail, etc., no further log messages are created. I have log_path set to /dev/stderr, and no syslog_facility setting, so... what could be going wrong? Second, when I create a new mailbox and copy messages across namespaces, dovecot hangs. The mailbox is created and the messages are copied successfully, but dovecot simply stops responding. I can't even logout! Hi, first of all for forgive me for my english. I have several questions. 1. There are 2 user/passwd databases in my setup - ldap and mysql. when i login into one user with telnet 127.0.0.1 143 and share inbox to some users - records in dict-file apears? but if i delete some acls - records indict-file stays same. 2. Hi all, can I expunge or search emails in public folders? The command 'doveadm expunge -u rzimmermann mailbox Public/folder all' does not delete emails in the folder 'Public/folder'. Hi, I'd like to use Global ACLs to limit user's access to individual folders (e.g. read only). Hi all! I built dovecot-1.2.14 on Solaris 10 with gcc as well as cc and had reproducible crashes of imap-login: Aug 31 19:00:05 dovecot: Info: Dovecot v1.2.14 starting up Aug 31 19:00:10 imap-login: Info: Login: user=<someuser>, method=PLAIN, rip=<remote_ip>, lip=<local_ip> Aug 31 19:00:10 IMAP(someuser): Error: ld.so.1: imap: fatal: libgcc_s.so.1: open failed: No such file or directory Aug 31 19:00:10 dovecot: Error: child 26222 (imap) killed with signal 9 To solution was to set the environment variable LIBS to "-lgcc_s" before running configure. I think this is a bug as this library should be added automatically by configure to the Makefile when considered necessary. The same problem applies to Dovecot-2.0.1 also, which gave the same error message. regards, Stephan P.S. I found a similar message of this issue for version 1.0.rc27 but the suggestions didn't help (i.e. /usr/sfw/lib is already in the RPATH).

Timo, Do you have any plans to add a static passdb? I'm essentially emulating one with sqlite on my director - have it connect to /dev/null and return three static fields for all queries. With the expire running from mysql, on 2.0.1, we get no errors with: " doveadm expunge -A mailbox Trash savedbefore 7d" we have the mail_plugins defined differently for each protocol ({imap=quota,expire,imap_quota} {pop3=quota,expire} {lda=quota,expire,sieve}). When trying "doveadm quota get -u someone(a)ourdomains.com" the output is: "doveadm(root): Fatal: Unknown command 'quota', but plugin quota exists. Try to set mail_plugins=quota" When adding an additional, global mail_plugins=quota, we get: "Segmentation fault" Is there a specific, proper way beyond the way I read of 1.2.x for defining the plugins. Yes, you're on the way :-) Problem was that in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf was: mail_location = maildir:/home/vmail/%u/ instead of my new line: mail_location = maildir:/home/vmail/%d/%u/ I think it's all right now. hi.. system: dovecot 2.0.1 + pigenhole my global sieve script is used but my users sieve scrips not. the user scripts arent even compiled. so i think the problem is with the home path im using ldap as userdb (ive tryed staticdb but i need the uid from my ldap, path is /home/MAILBOXES/hpeter/mail) user_attrs = homeDirectory=home=/home/MAILBOXES/%$/,uid=mail=maildir:/home/MAILBOXES/%$/mail user_filter = (&(objectClass=gosaMailAccount)(|(mail=%u)(gosaMailAlternateAddress=%u)(uid=%u))) in sieve i use: sieve_dir = ~/sieve any ideas ? all mails are stored correctly Hans

What's the problem? Hello, I would like to convert all users mail from maildir to mdbox. My Dovecot version is 2.0.1, converted from 1.2.13 but config was rewritten from scratch. http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Migration/MailFormat says following: maildir -> mdbox migration. Set mail_location=mdbox:~/mdbox and run doveadm convert -u username maildir:~/Maildir but doveadm does not know a command like "convert". Is there a _working_ way to convert maildir to mdbox ? How to do that with all Dovecot mail users (about 10000) ? Christian

Hi, I seem to be forced to run the auth proces as root because I want to use pam for local users. My gut feeling says that this is Not Good. Is there another way? For the virtual users 'vmail' is good enough because that user may access the MySQL database. This is on Ubuntu server 10.04.1 and Dovecot 1.2.9. TIA, Egbert Jan

Postfix has "message_size_limit = 26214400", but that doesn't keep my users from sending huge messages which canot be sent, but can be stored in the IMAP "Sent" folder. In the shell: ,doveadm(root): Error: User listing returned failure,doveadm: Error: Failed to iterate through some users In the log: dovecot: auth: Error: sql: Iterate query failed: Table 'mail.users' doesn't exist (using built-in default iterate_query: SELECT username, domain FROM users) Why is dovecot trying to "select username, domain from users" when the "service auth" is setup to "select homedir, maildir, sieve_dir, from MAILBOXES.... the same with the password query except for selecting password from mail.mailboxes. The expire dictionary is EXACTLY like the example you posted in the wiki2. I can't remember whether I posted this thread before or not; I remember writing it two days ago but I'm not sure if I sent it as I can't find it in this "mailing lists" folder. Jerrale G. Guys, We have been trying to establish if there is a way to get some type of notification from Dovecot when a message is appended to a mailbox or when a message has its flags updated. These are the 2 use cases: A message is appended to the mailbox "/Watch", we want to trigger "processing" of the message immediately it arrives. A message in the "Inbox" has its status changed from Unseen to Seen, we want to trigger some code to indicate the message has been "processed". Regards, John

Dear Experts, I configured Samba, Kerberos, etc., can login to my CentOS using ADS account, but missing something in my Dovecot config. Windbind seems to work: [root@aCentOs2 dovecot]# wbinfo -a wAlex%pass plaintext password authentication succeeded challenge/response password authentication succeeded Same is true for ntlm_auth helper: [root@aCentOs2 dovecot]# /usr/bin/ntlm_auth --username=wAlex --password=pass NT_STATUS_OK: Success (0x0) But I couldn't get into Dovecot (with or without auth_use_winbind option): . login wAlex pass . NO [ALERT] Unsupported authentication mechanism. Despite very verbose logging, there no clues there. This is not a huge problem but our firewall is looking for aborted login attempts, for imap/pop3 (relevant to dovecot) dos attempts and, if many people start having problems of their packets being dropped, we will have to stop looking for the statement or lower security slightly, more attempts over a period of time before filtering. However, thanks to your idle feature, there is less of these messages; so, I don't think we will have a problem. The only client that doesn't have a problem is our php webmail but we don't look in dovecot's log for failed attempts from here; as, it is from the same ip, to dovecot from php, constantly without reference to the user. This has been happening since 1.2.11 with us. We don't use any imap relay but was looking into imapproxy for cacheing speed and preventing advanced ddos attempts, those from users with access.
