[Dovecot] BUG Dovecot 1.0.15 and Apples Mail.app

Is there anyone using Apple´s Mail.app to collect the mails via IMAP or IMAPS ? I found a funny bug in Debian Lennys Dovecot Version. (still v. 1.0.15) When I get my Mails via IMAP or IMAPS and define a Rule in Mail.app to move the eMail to s specific folder I will find the mail 2 times in the folder. After a minute or so the double Mail disappears. I have tried it with other programs like Thunderbird. There everything works, v1.0 too. Now I have updatet Dovecot from 1.0 to 1.2 from Backports and everything works great now !!!!! Regards, Gerhard PS in Squeeze Dovecot is Version 1.2

Hello (and Moin Moin) ;) I have currently a straith Problem ... I have our IMAP-Server migrated from an old cyrus the the current stable Version of dovecot. In the old configuration we organized many mails (e.g. root-Stuff) in Public Folders. They structure had nearly 5 folderlevels. After the complete migration an syncronize we switch complete to the dovecot setup. At this moment we have problems with access to the Public Folders. (We use as Client the actualy Thunderbird3 ...) When i want subscribe Folders, i have no access to folder are deeper as second level! So if I want to run dovecot from tcpserver it seems like I can simply run `pop3-login --ssl` from tcpserver (its sort of like running it from inetd) and it says it will 'talk to dovecot'. Can I disable all listeners in dovecot then? Will is still talk to it? Trying some experiments now ... --Chuck

[Dovecot] Migrating from CommunigatePro to Dovecot - anyone done this?

Apologies if this is in the archive - did look but couldn't find it. Does anyone have any experience of migrating from CommunigatePro to Dovecot? We currently run CGP 5.3.4, supporting a small system (20 or so users, one domain). We've been using it for years, and have a mixed bag of MailDir and mbox folders accessed via IMAP clients. Some users have large mail accounts (15GB total). We're looking to move as CGP is evolving into a complex "Messaging Centre" application (PBX, SIP, Mail, Groupware, Portals etc.) which we don't need / use. I had a look on the Dovecot Wiki and under migration are discussions about various other mail systems, but I don't know enough about these to tell if they would also apply to CGP. [Dovecot] search bug?

Hi all, I have emails with multiple Delivered-To: headers in them. The problem is that the SEARCH command only searches in the first instances. You can see the meesage with the id 14557 _has_ a "Delivered-To: szamlagyar(a)uhusystems.com" header field, but the SEARCH does not find it, only another message. This is with dovecot 1.2.11. For the record, cyrus-imapd behaves as I would have expected, and I could not find anything relevant in the RFCs. Could anyone tell me if this is a bug, or how to search like I would want? Hello, I'm trying to set up something fairly simple (famous last words) using Dovecot. I have a very small setup (just a dozen users) I'm using qmail as my MTA. I'm running FreeBSD 8.0 I've got qmail delivering into a file named 'Mailbox' in user's home directories. I prefer not to use Maildir delivery because from a shell its a PITA to get a Maildir aware MUA (I use /bin/mail when I'm attached locally) What I'm trying to do is configure an SSL only POP3 server so that folks can retrieve their email on the road without divulging their passwords. My backup scenario is to put VPN software on my user's clients and having them VPN into the network and then do un-encrypted POP3 from the VPN. I prefer not to do this as it means maintaining the VPN client as well. Users have a mix of MacOS, Windows, and Linux. So, I can't get dovecot to work at all. In an unusual turn about I got the SSL stuff working but not the mailbox handling. [Dovecot] Logout after SSL/TLS negociation

Hi All, I've set up Dovecot to use my signed SSL certificate and IMAP client is using STARTTLS on port 143 without secure authentication. The TLS negociation process seems to go through ok but once the negociation is finished the client sends an IMAP LOGOUT message; he does not try to authenticate, below is the Dovecot's info log: dovecot: 2010-06-15 15:37:01 Info: auth(default): new auth connection: pid=3932 dovecot: 2010-06-15 15:37:03 Info: imap-login: Aborted login (0 authentication attempts): rip=130.100.32.54, lip=10.0.3.3, TLS I've decrypted the TLS negociation thanks to Wireshark (in SSL preferences I added the certificate's private key to decode the stream between client and server) but unfortunately it does not say why the client is sending the LOGOUT command. Do you have an idea of what could be wrong in my server set up? What debugging process would you advise me to follow? Thanks a lot for your precious help. I am running dovecot 1.1.7 with postfix 2.6.5. Ihad a server down issue and when it rebooted the IPFW firewalll on my FReebsd server prevented mail from being delivered..at least thatis what I think the issue was... when i stopped IPFW .. mail resumed anyway I use vmail structure..and there are message in the cur directory.. how do i get them "reprocessed" or "released" I presume this are incoming

[Dovecot] A new director service in v2.0 for NFS installations

As http://wiki.dovecot.org/NFS describes, the main problem with NFS has always been caching problems. One NFS client changes two files, but another NFS client sees only one of the changes, which Dovecot then assumes is caused by corruption. The recommended solution has always been to redirect the same user to only a single server at the same time. User doesn't have to be permanently assigned there, but as long as a server has some of user's files cached, it should be the only server accessing the user's mailbox. Recently I was thinking about a way to make this possible with an SQL database: http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2010-January/046112.html The company here in Italy didn't really like such idea, so I thought about making it more transparent and simpler to manage. The result is a new "director" service, which does basically the same thing, except without SQL database. The idea is that your load balancer can redirect connections to one or more Dovecot proxies, which internally then figure out where the user should go. So the proxies act kind of like a secondary load balancer layer. When a connection from a newly seen user arrives, it gets assigned to a mail server according to a function: host = vhosts[ md5(username) mod vhosts_count ] This way all of the proxies assign the same user to the same host without having to talk to each others. The vhosts[] is basically an array of hosts, except each host is initially listed there 100 times (vhost count=100). This vhost count can then be increased or decreased as necessary to change the host's load, probably automatically in future. The problem is then of course that if (v)hosts are added or removed, the above function will return a different host than was previously used for the same user. That's why there is also an in-memory database that keeps track of username -> (hostname, timestamp) mappings. Every new connection from user refreshes the timestamp. Also existing connections refresh the timestamp every n minutes. Once all connections are gone, the timestamp expires and the user is removed from database. The final problem then is how multiple proxies synchronize their state. The proxies connect to each others forming a connection ring. For example with 4 proxies the connections would go like A -> B -> C -> A. Each time a user is added/refreshed, a notification is sent to both directions in the ring (e.g. B sends to A and C), which in turn forward it until it reaches a server that has already seen it. This way if a proxy dies (or just hangs for a few seconds), the other proxies still get the changes without waiting for it to timeout. Host changes are replicated in the same way. It's possible that two connections from a user arrive to different proxies while (v)hosts are being added/removed. It's also possible that only one of the proxies has seen the host change. So the proxies could redirect users to different servers during that time. This can be prevented by doing a ring-wide sync, during which all proxies delay assigning hostnames to new users. This delay shouldn't be too bad because a) they should happen rarely, b) it should be over quickly, c) users already in database can still be redirected during the sync. The main complexity here comes from how to handle proxy server failures in different situations. Those are less interesting to describe and I haven't yet implemented all of it, so let's just assume that in future it all works perfectly. :) I was also thinking about writing a test program to simulate the director failures to make sure it all works. Finally, there are the doveadm commands that can be used to: 1) List the director status: # doveadm director status mail server ip vhosts users 11.22.3.44 100 1312 12.33.4.55 50 1424 1) Add a new mail server (defaults are in dovecot.conf): # doveadm director add 1.2.3.4 2) Change a mail server's vhost count to alter its connection count (also works during adding): # doveadm director add 1.2.3.4 50 3) Remove a mail server completely (because it's down): # doveadm director remove 1.2.3.4 If you want to slowly get users away from a specific server, you can assign its vhost count to 0 and wait for its user count to drop to zero. If the server is still working while "doveadm director remove" is called, new connections from the users in that server are going to other servers while the old ones are still being handled.

I'm hoping that this isn't something stupid and that I'm not wasting bandwidth here, but I'm stuck and don't know any further ways of debugging this. And most non-documentation, end-user created info I find is for 1.0 with cmusieve. Running Dovecot 1.2.11 on Fedora Core 12. Added 'sieve' to 'mail_plugins'. Have enabled verbose logging with 'mail_debug = yes'. But I'm not seeing anything in the logs relating to sieve, and the sieve script I point to isn't being compiled (no .log file). Everything else works fine, this is a production system where I'm trying to add sieve support. What steps can I take to troubleshoot? I'm now putting together tools/documentation to manage/administer the mail server, including, of course, managing users. Round one will be command line tools. In order to avoid re-invention, I was looking around for existing tools. I really cannot find any. So it seems I will be developing them. The first will be the one to manage users in the passwd-file format. So I'm just asking around if anyone has heard of such tools somewhere Google isn't finding (it does find lots of generic pages with the keywords used in other contexts). If not, I'll be building my own (and this will be for passwd-file format for the userdb/passdb),

I can compile the antispam plugin. Cause it compliajns about dovecot version. Does any one have other way of traing spam with spam assassin ? Hi, I have just switched to Maildir, and I have noticed something. Even though it works properly, I have noticed that a file named /var/mail/user with 0 bytes length is still created. Is this normal? I use sendmail+procmail+dovecot. I have also tried the combined procmail+deliver approach with the same results. I also use a global /etc/procmailrc. Thank you

[Dovecot] convert Plugin Error

I am getting an error when using the convert plugin for dovecot. Jun 14 13:27:20 mail dovecot: IMAP(user): Mailbox conversion: rename(/home/user/mail, /home/user/mail-converted) failed: Directory not empty Dovecot creates mail-converted, but does not delete mail completely for some reason. It continues to add a message from the mbox to Maildir format, creating duplicates every time I check my email. I can fix it by deleting mail-converted, but I don't want this to happen to other users on the system. Does anyone have a clue as to why it's doing this, and what I can do to fix it? Hi, Last year I installed dovecot on my Ubuntu V9 system 64 bit system. I use it to store emails from several clients in the LAN using IMAP. Last week I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04. Now Dovecot is no longer working. It started with messages about sieve, so I disabled sieve in the configuration file (did not use it in the past, don't know what it is). Dovecot can now be started without errors or warnings, but I cannot connect in the client. I get a message saying "could not connect to server: connection refused". Hi All, I've pored over the wiki, read through the archive, and have what I believe should be a working set-up, but I can't seem to get my shared namespace to work correctly. Any guidance would be much appreciated. I started off using a flat file for acl_shared_dict and ran into the same problem recently reported with the shared-database file getting chown'd to the first user to touch it with 0600 permissions. So I thought I'd give it a whirl with sqlite. Here are the (hopefully) relevant bits from dovecot -n (the entire output is posted below). This is dovecot 1.2.9 running on a freshly installed ubuntu 10.4 server: namespace: type: shared separator: / prefix: shared/%%u/ location: maildir:/home/staff/%%n/Maildir:INDEX=~/Maildir/shared/%%u list: children plugin: acl_shared_dict: proxy::acl dict: acl: sqlite:/etc/dovecot/acl-shared-dict.conf acl-shared-dict.conf looks like this: connect = /home/staff/dovecot/acl-shared-ns.sqlite map { table = acl_shared_ns pattern = shared/shared-boxes/user/$to/$from value_field = has_visible_folders fields { from_user = $from to_user = $to } } /home/staff/dovecot/acl-shared-ns.sqlite is set 0666, and I can add records to it from the sqlite command line as a normal user. Hello, I am having this error message on some rare emails with more than 6 mb or so. Neither the dovecot server nor the filesystem where the maildir resides have any quota or are full at the time of delivering. The mails goes getmail->postfix->dovecot delivery agent Is the mail written to any other place than the maildir folder? Even though all my temp folders should also be able to hold some megabytes... [Dovecot] question about rpc quota reporting 1.2.11

Timo, thank you for the reply to my question about shared folders yesterday. I'm now trying to get quota reporting working consistently. This is with dovecot 1.2.11 in solaris 10 sparc. We have local quotas for the mail spool (/a1) and quotas for home directories. All are UFS and have rpc (rquota) working fine. With just this: protocol imap { mail_plugins = quota imap_quota } My mail client (thunderbird 3.0.4) reported the home directory quota. So then I added this: plugin { quota = fs:INBOX:mount=/a1 quota2 = fs:Home:mount=%h } First, I had to make /a1/quotas world readable, otherwise I'd get this error: open(/a1/quotas) failed: Permission denied I'm getting the same type of error with the quota2 line now: open(/nfs/rack/u4/quotas) failed: Permission denied Since the home directory quota worked without the plugin configuration, my guess is that the plugin config is not using rpc. I can't find any way to force it to use rpc. Again, if I make that 'quotas' file world readable (which I believe isn't good practice), dovecot stops complaining. Also, what should I expect to see on the client? Will dovecot report only one quota (the one that's closer to the limit), or will it report both? I've only seen the first quota in thunderbird, but that could easily be a client issue. thank you Tom Lieuallen Oregon State University

When my dovecot-2.0.beta5 auth module logs a 552-byte debug message, the message is split into two lines and also a null error message: Wed Jun 9 23:44:29 gromit dovecot[58892]: auth: Error: I think this has to do with the use of PIPE_BUF (512) sized buffers in the logging code, and the !line_is_ok() case in i_failure_parse_line(). Could you please remove the null error message? Just a nuisance, nothing serious. Thanks.

Hi, we've defined a public namespace "shared" and use the acl and lazy-expunge plugins among others. The problem is, that a mailbox is deleted by the DELETE-command without the x-flag to be set (# 1.2.9): a myrights shared/aclDeleteTest * MYRIGHTS "shared/aclDeleteTest" lrsed a OK Myrights completed. b delete shared/aclDeleteTest b OK Delete completed. c myrights shared/aclDeleteTest c NO Mailbox doesn't exist: aclDeleteTest This behavior should be different and the mailbox should not be deleted, should it? Is there a fast workaround? Without the e-flag, mailboxes can't be deleted. But as some users should be allowed to use the expunge operation, it's no option to remove the e-flag... thx Martin

[Dovecot] problems with shared mailboxes and other general issues

I'm also having beginner's troubles with shared mailboxes with dovecot 1.2.11. I've used the TestInstallation instructions for connecting to the imap port via openssl and issuing the setacl/getacl commands. Those appear to be fine. I'm having real difficulty with the acl_shared_dict configuration. I'd prefer to just use a flat file, as I don't anticipate using shared folders very frequently. I don't need a database and would greatly prefer not to have a dependency on our database service. So, with this setting: acl_shared_dict = file:/private/dovecot/var/etc/shared-mailboxes The '../var/etc' directory is something like 755. I have to create the file first and make it 666. When it is updated, ownership & permissions are changed such that the user giving acl permissions then owns the file and it's 600. I tried setting it back to 644 afterward, so other users could read it, but they tried setting a lock in that dir as well. I tried this: acl_shared_dict = file:/private/dovecot/var/etc/shared-list/shared-mailboxes-%u Then I made shared-list have '1777' permissions. Permissions-wise, this will now work, including locks, but I'm guessing this is just plain wrong and I still can't verify access. My second choice was to use sqlite for this acl_shared_dict, but, even though I compiled dovecot with sqlite support and 'ldd' shows that '../libexec/dict' is linked against sqlite libraries, when I tried this config: acl_shared_dict = sqlite:/private/dovecot/etc/acl-shared-dict.conf I get this, and dovecot fails to start up. EUnknown dict module: sqlite I question whether I can use sqlite for acl_shared_dict. Furthermore, in this vein, I don't really know what the shared namespace should even look like. I've been trying the imap commands LIST and MYRIGHTS to verify access, but there are simply no examples. I'd rather expect this to work: x myrights shared/fromuser/folder but all I get is mailbox doesn't exist. I know 'shared' is the namespace, but I just don't know how it should really be referred to. Personally, I can live without the acl_shared_dict (from what I understand). I don't need to see the shared path for subscription, I'd just manually add the folder path to the .subscriptions file for the handful of users that need it. I just don't think it's working, though. On a related note, I thought I'd increase debugging to see if that helped out any. When I change 'mail_debug' to 'yes', as soon as I issue the imap login command, it logs some stuff, then kicks me out. Hello I have been reading http://wiki.dovecot.org/MailLocation and http://wiki.dovecot.org/Variables and I do not fully understand the directory hashing feature. I want to migrate > 70.000 users from Sun Messaging to Dovecot using imapsync. I have fail2ban working for EVERYTHING else except dovecot. I have tried using my own custom regex in conjunction with the regex on the dovecot.org site. Neither are picked up by fail2ban and I'm trying to use an imminent attack agaist dovecot, going on now, to my advantage to see when I get the right regexp. [Dovecot] Evolution and Thunderbird do different things?

I'm trying both Evolution and Thunderbird on my IMAP server, and find that there are differences in how some things are done, between clients. Shouldn't there have been a standard way to do these things in the IMAP protocol? The first thing I noticed is that when deleting email from one client, it puts a "T" on the file name, leaving it where it is, and from the other client, it moves the mail to a ".Trash" directory on the server (and created a 2nd "Trash" folder ... so now I have 2 "Trash" folders, one with some deleted mail in it, and the other with some deleted mail in it). I'm not saying Dovecot has a problem here. But maybe IMAP the protocol does for not having a standard way to do things, and these clients, for not doing it the same way (if there is some standard somewhere). Any IMAP experts here know what the story is with this?

Hi people, first message to this list. I've a problem with dovecot 1.0.15 (debian latest package) and an LDAP query. The situation is the following. My LDAP users have multiple mail addresses (field 'mail') and mail should be able to be sent to any of these and the mail should always end on the user's mailbox. This is not working for me now. My dovecot-ldap.conf relevant config shows: user-attrs = uid=user user_filter = (&(objectClass=posixAccount)(|(uid=%n)(mail=%u))) This correctly detects multiple addresses but mail always end in folder (from dovecot.conf): mail_location = maildir:/home/vmail/%n/Maildir So if user@domain gets a mail it ends in /home/vmail/user/Maildir but if the same user gets an email to user-alt@domain it ends in /home/vmail/user-alt/Maildir instead of /home/vmail/user/Maildir. [Dovecot] converting from vm-pop3d

Hello All. I am looking into an old server which is running vm-pop3d. This server is having problems because the pop3 server is taking up 100% of the CPU. I looked at the largest mailboxes and there are a handful over 20 megs in size, the largest one is 55megs, they are all mbox format (I think). I have been looking at the wiki and it looks like there is a perl script to make the mailboxes behave. There are also other scripts that try and convert mbox to maildir formats and from what I can gather dovecot can do this as well. Finally the dovecot in the fedora repos is 1.0.X and I notice that the latest in 1.2.X is there a more up to date dovecot RPM repo? I would appreciate any advice anybody can give me on how to proceed with this transition. Thank you in advance.

I have $conf['storage']['params']['driverconfig'] = 'horde'; $conf['storage']['driver'] = 'sql'; in /var/www/html/horde/ingo/config/conf.php I have 2,146 records for one of the users in ingo_lists table of horde DB. The size of the script (.dovecot.sieve file) is 99.965 bytes. When trying to activate script I get the following # Changes saved. # Error There was an error activating the script. The driver said: (QUOTA) "Quota exceeded" Please let me know where I can change that size of QUOTA

Hello, we are planning to migrate from Courier to Dovecot. We already know courier-dovecot-migrate.pl, that will convert UID list and subscriptions files to dovecot format, and we will run it in batch on all Maildir + enable it at login, once we do the switch But we are also wondering it it might be wise to "force" the creation of dovecot.index{,.cache} files at conversion-time. It seems that, at least, d.i.c is created at FETCH of a mail, i.e. reading it, but we do not want to "alter" mails status of our clients. Is there a way to create them in batch, or is it better to just let them be created once clients start accessing their mailboxes via dovecot? Thanks in advance, Sandro

Hi all, I just finished migrating from mbox to maildir (and upgrade squirrelmail to the latest version) with some issue. We are using Postfix 2.3, Dovecot 1.2.7 and Squirrelmail 1.4.2. One of user report that suddenly all his Sent and Drafts emails were disapeared. After log in to webmail, I found out that there are 3 new folder called Drafts, Sent and Trash apart from Drafts,Sent,Trash underneath INBOX folder, and all his sent and draft emails were there. I thought I just move the email from Sent folder to the Sent underneath INBOX, but I was wrong. Now he got all sent emails in Sent items but after refreshed the webmail, INBOX wont open at all. it just blank but in the left side it said the amount of his email. what did i do wrong? is it something to do with the dovecot.index and index.cache or the uidlist? please enlighten me.... thank you Hendry

So after some problems with NFS and transaction logs getting corrupted. Im tyring out storing them localy. via.. mail_location: maildir:~/Maildir:INDEX=/var/dovecot/indexes/%u the problem is with a large amount of users.. the indexes dir becomes huge with this setup. So a change to make this better is... mail_location: maildir:~/Maildir:INDEX=/var/dovecot/indexes/%d/%n to seperate the users dir's into domains. What seems to happen is dovecot creates the index's folder automaticly and its owned by that user.. eg.. drwx------ 3 10651674 2598184 4096 2010-06-02 19:08 domain.com this makes it so no other user of domain.com can get their transaction logs created cause the dir is owned by another user at that domain. Is there anyway around this? I see there used to be a umask option but that is gone in 1.2.x. -- Jordan Tardif DreamHost

Hello ISSUE: Intermittently getting username and password authentication in clients both OUTLOOK 2007 and latest Thunderbird, indicating that the client is not authenticated with the server. Ie the username and password dialogue constantly reappears. This only appears as more users logged into the system. TEMP FIX: Restart Dovecot. [Dovecot] Questions about migration Sun Messaging -> Dovecot+Postfix+Ldap

Hello. We are planning a migration from Sun One Messaging Server to Dovecot+Postfix+Ldap. We are using Dovecot 1.2.11 with Sun One Directory Server 5.2 ldap (we will migrate to Directory Server 6.3.1) soon. In our University we have 65.000 students, 5.500 staff and 6.500 teachers. Our main ldap realm is dc=us,dc=es (us means University of Seville, Spain). We have two e-mail domains, @us.es (staff+teachers) and @alum.us.es (students). We use Sun One Directory Server to load data to our ldap from several sources (like Oracle databases, flat files, etc) Our ldap tree is like this: dc=us,dc=es | |----->ou=People,dc=us,dc=es // "special" users only used by apps | | |----->o=us.es,dc=us,dc=es // ldap branch for staff+teachers | | |----->o=alum.us.es,dc=us,dc=es // ldap branch for students A user id is unique, so there is only a "john_doe" in the ldap tree (I repeat, there is NOT uid=john_doe,o=us.es,dc=us,dc=es and uid=john_doe,o=alum.us.es,dc=us,dc=es). Below you will find a copy of the dovecot.conf and dovecot-ldap.conf. Our operating system is Red Hat Enteprise Linux 5 x64. These are our questions: 1) We are unable to make dbox work with quota, but we have no problem with maildir. Quota is stored in a ldap attibute called "mailQuota" 2) A user can be in different branches in the same time: for example, a teacher called pepito should be in the uid=pepito,o=us.es,dc=us,dc=es branch but if that teacher is also a student should have another ldap entry uid=pepitosurname,o=us.es,dc=us,dc=es. Our identity management is the piece of software that "promotes" a user in that case. How should we use "mail_location" to addres this? 3) We are planning to use two raid5 of 8 SAS 15.000 rpm disks for these mailboxes. We will use a "2.0, ajax-based webmail" like roundcube. Most of our users will use webmail (imap based). How many iops should we have in that enviroment? We would like to use dbox, but we are stuck in maildir because 1) 4) Some users could have their mailboxes "disabled". We use the following line: user_filter = (&(objectClass=inetorgperson)(uid=%n)(mailUserStatus=active)) but it does NOT work as expected. Any idea) 5) We are planning to use bacula to backup user mailboxes. Any known problem with this (i will ask in the bacula mailing list anyway) 6) I have read carefully perfomance in dovecot wiki. Can I use noatime in /etc/fstab safely with dovecot? Any perfomance hint apart from we already have in our config files? 7) When we set vacation messages they work but we see this error in the log: dovecot: deliver(jorgelp): file_dotlock_create(~/.dovecot.lda-dupes) failed: No such file or directory 8) When a user log in she uses his username "mary" (without @us.es or @alum.us.es) . Our dovecot search in all the ldap tree until it finds that uid. But we would like to store in our mail_location /buzones/us.es or /buzones/alum.us.es. How can we accomplish this? Hi, I'm trying to configure shared mailboxes using ACLs. On dovecot 1.2.10 it works fine, but the same configuration on dovecot 2.0. beta4 doesn't work. [Dovecot] mangled user_attrs from LDAP

I have setup dovecot to allow users to login using their email address or uid and have found a strange behaviour when the user logs in using the email address for a "username". I am using OpenLDAP for a backend data store with a rather customized schema. This behaviour occurs for both POP3 and IMAP logins. For some users it works as expected, but for others the pass_attrs->user does not get mapped back to the uid, but remains the mailLocalAddress (dovecot-ldap.conf is attached at the end of this post). Here is an excerpt from the logs for a working and a malfunctioning user. This behaviour has been found with both OpenLDAP: slapd 2.3.39 and OpenLDAP: slapd 2.4.17, and is consistent with standard LDAP behaviour (ie, there is no guaranteed ordering in the LDAP database). A brief look at the code, seems to indicate that the values are being pulled from the LDAP return struct in a step-wise manner, which could certainly put them out of sync with the request if it is assumed that they will always be returned in the same order....This is just based on a quick review of the code though, and not any detailed tracing. Is it possible to configure dovecot in a manner that only the imap process respects the quota, and the local delivery ignores completely the quota? I think it should happen if I don't activate the quota plugin in the lda section but only in the imap section. protocol lda { ... # mail_plugins = ... } protocol imap { ... mail_plugins = quota imap_quota ... } Will it work or will it result in a big mess? I've the aim that a mail will never be rejected because the recipient is over his/her quota. Regards, Holger

[Dovecot] Problems with the IMAP proxy after upgrading from dovecot 1.1.16 to 1.211

We have frequent timeout problems after upgrading our imap servers from dovecot 1.1.16 to dovecot 1.2.11. One server acts as proxy only, and the other one is the "real" imap server". The credentials for the proxy service are stored in a remote MYSQL database. There were no trouble with dovecot 1.1.16. But now, with the most recent version, we get frequent login failures. It seems dovecot reconnects too late to the MySQL database after a timeout, after sending the SQL query. we use Passdb LDAP with authentication binds against an Active Directory Server. The problem with one of our users seems to be the usage of double quotes in his password, as the windows-login works: /var/log/dovecot-info.log auth(default): Info: ldap(testuser 77.22.xx.xxx): invalid credentials (given password: xxxxx"xxxxxxx) Which chars in passwords does the dovecot auth process not like? When mail is sent from the mail server, it shows up as originating from the MAIN ip address of the server, 173.50.101.11, when the mail server is bound to 173.50.101.12. I have already set smtp_bind_address: 173.50.101.12 in main.cf and 173.50.101.12:smtp inet - - smtpd in master.cf. This prevents smtp connects TO any other ip but 173.50.101.12 BUT mail STILL shows up originating from eth1, where 173.50.101.12 is eth1:2 I think this is *nix related and most here, on dovecot mailing list, could provide help.

Hello, I've got dovecot 1.2.11 running on Fedora 12 (x86_64) with the managesieve protocol and sieve plugins enabled, with deliver handling local delivery. I've set disable_plaintext_auth = yes ssl = yes ssl_cert_file = /etc/pki/dovecot/certs/dovecot.pem ssl_key_file = /etc/pki/dovecot/private/dovecot.pem mail_debug = yes protocol managesieve { listen = *:2000 login_executable = /usr/libexec/dovecot/managesieve-login mail_executable = /usr/libexec/dovecot/managesieve } and generated local SSL certificates; everything is going fine on the IMAP end of things (clients ask if I trust the certificate the first time, etc). I've open the appropriate ports, etc. No problems with mail delivery. However, I can't connect to the managesieve daemon. I've tried the Emacs client[1], and it just hangs. When Dovecot is in proxy mode, the client sends along the original connection endpoints in an ID command. Is there any chance 'doveadm who' could use this to display the original connection source? As it currently stands, all I see is a bunch of connections from the proxy. These are virtual users with no log-in to the server only Roundcube's web interface The situation is that I have two domains only who want to receive email at their domains, get a forwarded copy at their hotmail account, then log-in to Roundcube to reply. A Sieve script running in Dovecot seems the way to go, but the finer points of configuration have failed me. It seems that Dovecot isn't configured to use send via Deliver ? My conf is pasted before (Exim handles regular domain email forwarding mail for a bunch of virtual domains to pop accounts.) We're using the SQLite backend for authentication of Postfix SASL. When the db is replaced we HUP dovecot to close and reopen its connection. During this time it appears the socket file is removed and Postfix rejects the authentication attempt. [Dovecot] Dovecot aspects of fighting spam

I see no documents in the Dovecot documents wiki on how Dovecot features can be used in the fight against spam. One hit came up in a search, and it was about how to fight spam in the MoinMoin Wiki itself (e.g. TextCHAs and such). I already asked in another thread about removing message files at the search from a designated "learn-spam" folder. My next question would be how to automatically place detected spam into a specific folder for the user to access or ignore as they deem fit. That would seem to me to be something for the deliver command and its -m option. But this might be more of a Dovecot and MTA coordination issue, too (e.g. how to get the spam detection done in the MTA ... Postfix in my case ... to become a label of some sort that ends deciding the folder. The -m option might be harder to get it dynamically set since it would be hard coded in master.cf for Postfix (so a variable has to be able to direct it to INBOX in this case). But maybe the "standard" way of doing this is to shim another program between the MTA (Postfix for me) and the LDA (Dovecot deliver) to dynamically add the -m option on the fly? Lacking any other clever solution, this seems to me to be the way I could make it work. Maybe there is a special header deliver could detect, such as "X-Spam: yes"? A wiki document on how Dovecot helps (or how to help Dovecot) in the fight against spam, I think, would be helpful.

[Dovecot] configuring sendmail to work with dovecot+LDAP

I would like to setup dovecot (1.1.20) with LDAP virtual users, but I don't seem to understand how to get my sendmail to accept mail for the virtual users. (I am rather new to this, so I may have some misunderstandings) I have followed - wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/DovecotOpenLdap (OpenLDAP 2.3.43) and I think I have IMAP working for virtual users. I can connect to port 143, enter a username and password and it works. Now I surmise I need to configure my SMTP server to accept mail for these LDAP virtual users, and deliver it appropriately. (The above HowTo doesn't address this step, from what I can tell) I read - wiki.dovecot.org/LDA and wiki.dovecot.org/LDA/Sendmail (I'm using OpenBSD 4.7, which uses sendmail for MTA / SMTP server, sendmail version 8.14.3) For sendmail.cf, I made the changes in my sendmail.mc file to include the dovecot mailer (calling /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver), and compiled with m4 and installed the new sendmail.cf For dovecot.conf, I edited the portions (abbreviated): protocol lda { auth_socket_path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-master } and auth default { socket listen { master {path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-master }}} When I try to test this, (telnet www.example.org 25) If I try: MAIL TO:jdoe@www.example.org I get "User unknown" I see that if I try: MAIL TO:jdoe@example.org I get "Relaying denied" Either way it doesn't get delivered. I have recipient_delimiter = + in main.cf (Postfix). But deliveries to dovecot/deliver are still being rejected. It appears that the full email is still in the envelope (e.g. phil+howard(a)example.com which I want to be delivered to phil(a)example.com) Is that how it's supposed to work and Dovecot just doesn't support this?

[Dovecot] Intermittent timeout issues

Greetings list! We've been experiencing an intermittent issue in which none users are able to log into the mail server for about 10 to 20 minutes. This issue first appeared on our CentOS 4 box running dovecot 1.2.11 after upgrading from the stock version 0.99. The issue persists after migrating our users to a CentOS 5 server - also running version dovecot 1.2.11 but now in the 64-bit flavor. Our users authenticate against LDAP via PAM in case that might be relevant. I've yet to find anything "of interest" in the logs covering the outages. But here is what I've noticed: * Users on our internal network are still able to authenticate and login. * Users from the outside are "Disconnected for inactivity" * Immediately after the restart, external users were able to log in again. It almost sounds like the firewall is blocking external access except that: * The version of dovecot was the thing that changed * Everything starts working again after a dovecot restart If anyone could provide some insight, I'd sure appreciate it. [Dovecot] purge maildir folder after sa-learn

Hello, I am looking for a command-line utility to automatically purge one Maildir folder. I want to periodically run sa-learn from cron, and after the spam learning folder has been added to the Bayes database, its contents should be deleted. I've searched a bit, but only found a few old utilities or some telnet+expect scripts, which both didn't look too reliable. Is there any command-line utility to delete all contents of a Maildir folder, or is there any other solution? Thanks, Florian

I've deleted some empty IMAP folders, using Thunderbird. But before deleting them, I had a look into Trash directory on the filesystem: /home/pvo/mdbox/mailboxes/Trash/ ├── dbox-Mails │ ├── dovecot.index │ ├── dovecot.index.backup │ ├── dovecot.index.cache │ └── dovecot.index.log ├── Dev │ └── dbox-Mails │ └── dovecot.index.log ├── S4 │ └── dbox-Mails │ └── dovecot.index.log └── Server4 └── dbox-Mails └── dovecot.index.log (Yeah, looks good, no dbox-GUID file.) Hi Stephan, ManageSieve uses the wrong™ service name for the authdb lookup. With dovecot-1.2-managesieve the service name was changed from 'managesieve' to 'sieve'. So I altered my table layout in order to make the query "SELECT userid AS "user", password FROM dovecotpassword('%Ln', '%Ld') WHERE %Ls" work again. When I try to login on the sieve port 4190/tcp, I find this in my dovecot.log: auth: Error: pgsql: Query failed, retrying: ERROR: column "managesieve" does not exist auth: Error: LINE 1: ...", password FROM dovecotpassword('user', 'example.org') WHERE managesiev... Hi, I've a set of public mailboxes that all users can access. The index is stored per user, so each user can mark the message as read for themselves. This is with dovecot 1.2.10. However, when selecting the mailbox, system flags are not announced as permanent but only as session flags: 3619 SELECT "public.Admin" * FLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft) * OK [PERMANENTFLAGS ()] Read-only mailbox. * 324 EXISTS * 0 RECENT * OK [UNSEEN 171] First unseen. * OK [UIDVALIDITY 1254326934] UIDs valid * OK [UIDNEXT 1102] Predicted next UID * OK [HIGHESTMODSEQ 1] Highest 3445 OK [READ-ONLY] Select completed. I think (reading the RFC, but I bet you know it better than me) that FLAGS should also been set in PERMANENTFLAGS since they can be permanent. The relevant code seems to be in commands-util.c (dovecot 1.2.11): void client_send_mailbox_flags(struct client *client, bool selecting) { […] if (mailbox_is_readonly(client->mailbox)) { client_send_line(client, "* OK [PERMANENTFLAGS ()] " "Read-only mailbox."); } else { […] } } Even if it's true that the Maildir is read-only, it's still possible to store \Seen permanently. Am I getting things wrong, or is this a bug? If I'm correct, a simple fix MAY be not to send the PERMANENTFLAGS at all since the RFC says: OK [PERMANENTFLAGS (<list of flags>)] A list of message flags that the client can change permanently. Hi, I'm using dovecot 2.0.beta5 (IMAP and LMTP+sieve) and I'm getting lots of errors like this: Warning: /data/mail/4567/Maildir/dovecot-uidlist: Duplicate file entry at line 3: 1274182284.M635158P16414.mail,S=767,W=785:2,S (uid 5 -> 16) All data is stored on local disk (ext3, no NFS!). As this is a fresh installation of dovecot I do not know if older versions work better. One user complained about loosing email from inbox but I guess that's probably a user error :) I think that the error might be related to deliveries via LMTP as this (new) functionality has not been tested extensivly (?)
