With 1.2.11 and mbox storage, the delay time in pulling new mail headers to the client from imap folders seems to be directly proportional to mailbox size, regardless of the number of new messages. At present, if the mailbox is large, pulling new headers is rather painfully slow. Is this expected behavior? Especially given that the client already has all the "old" mails in the folder cached, and thus wouldn't be asking for them? Is there a setting(s) I can change to optimize/fix this? -- Stan

Hi there, I've been working on rolling out the "deliver" service so we can implement sieve. Dovecot 1.2.11, Postfix 2.6.6, FreeBSD 8, installed by ports. Clustered environment, NFS backend. Everything is working great for the most part, I'm using it to sort a copy of my personal email on a test server. However, I noticed two emails were not properly sorted. I had added a rule (using Ingo, nice little piece of software) to redirect the nightly FreeBSD security output emails into a folder "servers". However, nothing had triggered that rule, and the "Maildir/.servers" directory had not yet been created. I'm assuming they were all sent to deliver at the same time, they all thought they needed to make the directory, the one with msgid 20100529070110.17A781B53B9(a)mail-out02.xecu.net was able to make the directory and get delivered, whereas the other two freaked out because they couldn't make the directory they thought needed to be made, and just sent the mail to the inbox. That's a reasonable approach, although I wonder if deliver/sieve could be (or perhaps "has been in 2.0") adjusted to more intelligently handle that edge case. Also, I'm wondering about "dovecot_destination_recipient_limit = 1". [Dovecot] Unresolved client rejection

Hi, would it be possible to prevent users who try to login from an unresolved IP from connecting to Dovecot IMAP? I have a suspicion that it should be done via the authentication module (ie PAM) but I am not sure (if this is the case could someone recommend a good resource or even a solution). For example sendmail has a relevant macro to achieve this, I was wondering if Dovecot can have similar behavior. Thanks

thanks for your answer. There is only 1 Account in Mail.app I have imigratet from Courier and there I had no Problem with all the settings. Is it possible that the index file is damaged or something like that ? [Dovecot] imap folder aliases for different mail clients naming convention

Hi, sorry if this was asked before and/or if there is allready a solution different imap mail clients, have different imap folder naming conventions typical by sent , trash, spam i normally use thunderbird conventions, as its working on all major plattforms and configure hord/imp , squirrelmail to use it like thunderbird does, additional i use autocreate with this folders it would be nice to alias other mail clients naming conventions to TB folder naming conventions without poke around with i.e symlinks etc, i guess there might be some solution with namespaces but i hope i could be done more easy eventually with a alias plugin etc? -- Best Regards MfG Robert Schetterer Germany/Munich/Bavaria

Hello, recently I inspected the sourcecode of the lmtp server. I searched for changes that would add return-path header. ( http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2010-February/046401.html ) But I found, that all mails are spooled via files in /tmp. Hello guys, Firstly I would like to state that I am fairly new to Dovecot. I have played around with it in the past here and there but mainly with debian packages. I have compiled this version of Dovecot from source, so please go easy with me. Ok now down to my questions: I am having trouble getting Dovecot to 'ignore' the Trash folder when summing up the used quota for a user. I am running Dovecot 1.2.11 (with LDA), Postfix 2.5.5, and Postfixadmin 2.3. I am able to send and receive emails fine. Roundcube displays the quota used but this quota also counts what is in the users Trash can. Postfix is configured to hand over delivering of the mail to Dovecot. I have tried different methods from the documentation on ignoring the Trash folder, but have not come up with anything that has worked yet. If someone could point me in the right direction, that would be great. Hi, I have a littel Problem. I?m running a Debian Lenny/Postfix/Dovecot Server. I hade immigrated from Courierer. Now I have the problem, that I get mail under Mail.app double. (same header, Message-ID ,...) When I use Thudnerbird under MacOS there is all OK. Are there some Configs that I need to make for MacOS / Mail.app ? Hi, I'm doing the final tests before I migrate my 10000 users from RHEL 4 + dovecot 1.1.20 to RHEL5 + dovecot 1.2.11, and I'm having some serious problems with outlook 2007 clients disconnecting very often. In dovecot's log I see lot of connects and disconnects from these clients (as oposed to my kmail, that just connects once when I come in and disconnects when I shut it off). After unchecking the "chek every X minutes" thing in outlook I get fewer of those -while functionality remains-, but the main problem still persists: every now and then (more or less 30 mins), the client disconnects, and sometimes the client goes offline. This didn't happen with my previous setup. I use the outlook-idle workaround, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Any ideas? Is there any way to still be able to login/delete email via dovecot-imap when the user's filesystem quota is exceeded? Hello Folks, Yesterday while messing around with procmail for SpamAssassin I had my IMAP client open and it lost it's ability to see my Inbox except for two messages. I tried another IMAP client and no success. I can see all other directories such as sent and the ones I have made. The mbox file is there and catable/grepable. I even made a new one. I can read a test account Inbox from the same server with my usual client. Also my small number of other users appear to be using pop3 as normal. Tried so far: * Multiple clients including pop3. * Removed spamd and procmail stuff. * Various permissions. * New mbox. * Restart everything, although I am not sure I rebooted the server last night. * Searched for lock files that may need to be deleted. * Googled. Server setup: * Mandriva Linux 2009.1 * Dovecot 1.1.13 * Postfix 2.5.6 The mailbox in question is my business and some personal email so I would greatly appreciate any help towards fixing this issue. [Dovecot] symlinking maildirs

I have some emails that I think are in the Postfix delivery queue going to Dovecot, but didn't get mapped to their alias (because I didn't have all the alias entries in when they were queued). I'm wondering if this trick would work. I have the mail being delivered to /home/mail/%Ld/%Ln/mail and am wondering if I could make a symlink at /home/mail/example.com/foo -> bar and add a dummy password for foo(a)example.com and have that mail trying to go to foo(a)example.com really go to bar@example and make a successful delivery (it is soft bouncing right now).

[Dovecot] Overly long email of miscellaneous Dovecot migration questions

Hello to the list! I've been asked to spec out the feasibility and, if feasible, plan a migration from Courier to Dovecot for both POP3 and IMAP for about 4 million mailboxes. I've been trying to absorb all the dovecot-related info I could over the past couple of weeks from the docs and from the list and I'm sure that I've muddled at least some of it, so apologies in advance if I make grossly incorrect assumptions. BTW, sorry for the giant email but I've got a bunch of questions. This is the sort of overly wordy email that makes my eyes glaze over in mailing lists. But I've got things configured to where (I think) everything will 'just work' if we migrate (barring running POP3 mailbox conversions), so I'm not looking for configuration help, just gotchas and assumption-checking mostly. Me breaking 4 million mailboxes isn't really a good move for my job security ;) * Since Dovecot 2.0 seems like it's just around the corner, that's all I've been testing, and indeed all I've even looked at. * This is a pretty fantastic piece of software. I love the neat little details that make admins' lives easier, e.g. how easy it is to use multiple SSL certs in the same server. That made me smile. I hadn't looked at dovecot in a number of years, so I was really impressed at the full feature set. It's been a while since I've played with a new server application that I've enjoyed this much. * Background: All of our mail is stored on NFS and will be for the foreseeable future, all in maildir format. Courier POP3/IMAP runs on load balanced Linux servers, so clients will be hitting multiple servers, though stickiness based on client IP address is currently done. Webmail as well is done on top of a local Courier IMAP server accessing the same NFS servers but on an entirely different pool of servers. All authentication is done against SQL. Courier has been very, very good to us over the past 9 years, but our NFS servers (12 Netapps) are unfortunately being beaten to death. We've got lots of users with thousands of emails in their inbox (i.e. in ./Maildir/cur/ alone) and I've seen plenty of mailboxes with 10's of thousands in their inbox and I've even seen some really scary ones approaching 100k emails just in cur/. Thanks to an endless cycle of industry raising mailbox limits, we actually have to support this (though not so much the 100k message ones, at least). * Our #1 main motivation for looking Dovecot is relief for our currently overtaxed NFS servers, mostly in the form of the index files. Benchmarking dovecot looks great, even with the index files in the maildir. I know the cool thing to do would be to move the index files to a separate NFS server running entirely on SSDs for the fastest accesses possible. Building a separate index NFS cluster obviously adds complexity and performance with the index files in the maildir seems pretty great already. But I also know that real life often makes assumptions made during benchmarks look very foolish. My inclination is to try things out with the indexes in the maildir directory (and then start looking at moving to a dedicated NFS server for the indexes in a subsequent phase) but I don't want to regret that choice later. Anybody with large-scale NFS maildir stores have any advice either way? * Exim: We currently deliver all of our mail via Exim on separate servers. Our POP3/IMAP servers only do POP3/IMAP and the Exim mail servers delivering to maildirs only do Exim. From what I've seen in the docs and various threads, from what I can gather, the best thing to do in that case would be to use Exim's built-in maildir handling, instead of using 'deliver'. That would be my preference anyway, but I wanted to make sure I didn't misinterpret things. * Any problems running Courier POP3 and Dovecot IMAP for a while, possibly Courier IMAP and Dovecot IMAP concurrently?: Since migrating POP mailboxes is going to be a mighty task, our gameplan would probably be to start migrating *just* IMAP services at first and likely on just a few servers at a time. Being load balanced, there are several scenarios where a user could theoretically access a mailbox on different servers and therefore end up hitting dovecot at one point in time and then later hitting courier or vice versa. Or they could use IMAP from one location and POP3 (during the span of time before we migrated our POP3 services) from another. I've not yet seen any side effects from switching mail servers like that (though I'm aware of what would happen if both dovecot and courier *POP3* were in service at the same time -- redownloaded mail, bleh). Has anyone seen otherwise? I'm not worried as much by the 0.1% of IMAP users who might be using advanced features but rather the other 99.9% who are using it pretty vanilla-ishly. * Union mailboxes: I'm pretty sure in a fairly recent thread that Timo said that something like a 'union' mailbox (at least with maildir) wasn't possible. I tried messing with multiple 'private' namespaces (i.e. a namespace called "ARCHIVE" with a "location" different than the INBOX location, ideally placed on slower but denser NFS servers) but even with 'hidden=no' and 'list=yes', only the main INBOX folders would show up, so I'm guessing that's not going to work. That would be a killer feature, to be able to serve an alternate namespace that would show up in a mail client's subscribable list that could be on slower storage than the main inbox (though I'm not sure a mail client can even handle multiple namespaces). * Any problems with keeping only quota limits in db and not current quota numbers? Our limits come out of a SQL table but the current counts just live in the maildir file. Trying to update quota counts in SQL for 4 million mailboxes is a non-starter for us at this point. >From what I've done, dovecot seems pretty happy to maintain the quota using the 'maildir' quota plugin but let it be overridden by the userdb lookup. So I think I'm fine on that count, but I'd love to hear from anyone knowing of extreme gotchas doing it that way. * Any problem with leaving the namespace in "Courier compatibility" mode? I.e. in namespace 'private', leaving "prefix = INBOX.". With 4 million mailboxes, FAQs all over the place, and support reps trained in a particular way of doing things in IMAP, it'd be hellish to try to change the prefix (I know I could leave the courier namespace around with 'hidden=yes' but retraining support staff is perhaps better left to phase #2). Do I lose anything besides tidiness by not changing it to "prefix =" as if I was deploying dovecot from scratch? Does it hurt performance in any significant way? Benchmarking doesn't look any different, so I'm guessing not. * One thing that threw me and might be good for a FAQ (unless it was just me misconfiguring things) was when I started playing with putting the index files in an alternate location. I was utterly perplexed why it'd create the directories for the indexes but they'd be empty. Based on their location and names when they're in the maildir, I was just looking for the same dovecot.index* files right in the alternate directory. It wasn't till I started strace'ing that I noticed that the index files were indeed getting created but in a subdirectory called .INBOX (and with me just doing 'ls'). * The courier-dovecot-migrate.pl does a fine job at converting our POP3 mailboxes. We'll definitely be doing a mass run of it across all of our mailboxes. But with this many mailboxes, there's no way to get around the time lag between the script getting run and new mail showing up. Which means that there'll be some number of new messages that will re-download in POP3 when the switchover to Dovecot POP3 is done. To keep from getting too many complaints from customers, I'm thinking that I might have to write a wrapper script to do something like compare the mtime of ./Maildir/new/ against dovecot-uidlist and overwrite if ./Maildir/new/ is newer or perhaps see if the mtime of courierpop3dsizelist is newer than dovecot-uidlist and only if that's the case execute the conversion script with --overwrite. Considering we get between 500-2000 POP3 logins/sec, running any script after a POP3 login terrifies me--even a 6 line bash script. Anybody have any opinions to share on that? With a pooled architecture, it's near impossible to only have some mailboxes hit Courier and some hit Dovecot and keep slowly incrementing. At best my available units of increments to migrate are a few thousand at a time and more realistically 10-20k at a time. If we're going to have to live with users complaining about a one-time redownload of just post-conversion mail, I'll need to get started convincing the higher-ups that that's life. Hello, bug or feature? I'm using Dovecot 1.2.11. And because of a migration projekt I'm tempted to use the listescape plugin. If I understood well, it plugin { escape_char = "%" } should change the escape character to %. But it doesnt. Bug or feature? But more important: # sieve fileinto "a.b"; does not work as expected - the folder is visible as "a.b" in a normal imap client - because of the listescape plugin. # sieve fileinto "a\\2eb"; works. But the user won't understand this. Any ideas? [Dovecot] mdbox: Is there any more info on the "cleanup" step? (Dovecot 2.0beta5)

The wiki page which mentions mdbox talks about a "cleanup" step for mdbox: : The space is later freed in "cleanup" step. This may be done : automatically within the session or later in a nightly cronjob when : there's less disk I/O. The cleanup first finds all files that have : refcount=0 mails. Then it goes through each file and copies the : refcount>0 mails to other dbox files (to the same files as where newly : saved messages would also go), updates the map index and finally : deletes the original file. So there is never any overwriting or file : truncation. I was wondering if there was any code to actually do this, or any command-line tools (and if either of those where they might be), or whether it was just design musings at the minute. Regards, Bill

[Dovecot] mdbox: What format is the file "storage/dovecot.map.index" in? (Dovecot 2.0beta5)

I am looking at "mdbox" under Dovecot 2.0beta5. Looking at the documentation for "mdbox" I saw that we had a directory "storage" containing files "m.#" where "#" is an integer and a map file ("dovecot.map.index"). I think I expected the map file to be a plain text file with one record per line, but in fact it appears to contain binary data. According to the wiki ( http://wiki.dovecot.org/MailboxFormat/dbox ) the records go as: - map_uid: Unique growing 32 bit number for the message. - refcount: 16 bit reference counter for this message. Each time the message is copied the refcount is increased. - file_id: File number containing the message. For example if file_id=5, the message is in file m.5. - offset: Offset to message within the file. - size: Space used by the message in the file, including all metadata. The map file I have here is 1688 bytes in size (and I think there are 64 messages stored). Prime factors of 1688 are 2^3 x 211, so I think it is something other than just a straight array of fixed-size structures. Still, I can always look at the source if I really want to know :-) Regards, Bill

[Dovecot] newbie question about shared folders

I'm preparing to move our site to dovecot 1.2.11 and have a question about shared folders. We're currently using UW imap's mbx mailboxes for shared folders. We accomplish the sharing by use of file system permissions and ACLs. I notice that dovecot's method of sharing is more based on IMAP ACLs and apparently file system permissions are useful, but not necessary. On the main dovecot page, it says: "Dovecot allows mailboxes and their indexes to be modified by multiple computers at the same time..." So, my question is whether I need to use the dovecot imap sharing namespace in order to safely share imap folders, or whether I can just use file system permissions as we have been using? My biggest concern is safe concurrent access to the shared folders, which I'm planning to implent with mbox files for now. thank you Tom Lieuallen Oregon State University College of Engineering

[Dovecot] Busy looping of 2.0Beta4 on NetBSD-current

I built and install Dovecot 2.0Beta4 on my NetBSD/amd64-current system, and am seeing the user-owned imap processes busy-looping. In Dovecot 1.2.x (and 1.x and 0.x..) I force ionotify and ioloop to kqueue, so I suspected that was the problem. Turns out it's not: Using poll or none also causes the same problem. This did not happen in 1.2.8 (didn't try anything later than that). After a quick visit to gdb, I added some i_debug() statements in ioloop-kqueue.c (when I had that as the notify and loop method) which showed that the loop was in io_loop_handler_run() . I haven't done any similar debugging for the other ioloop methods, but a quick look at the 2.0 changelog for those files doesn't raise any immediate alarms. Any ideas what to look for here? Timo, any ideas? 1.2.x worked perfectly so it's something "new" in 2.0. ScottE

Hello, I may have missed a point, but I could have found an issue between plugins quota and lazy_expunge. I have noticed that the "lazy_expunge"d mails are counted as part of the quota, while the documentation says it should not be. I have first tried to find out if this was a configuration mistake somewhere. Notably, you can notice that the expunged mails are in directory ~/expunged while the usual mail is in ~/Maildir : expunged mails are not in a subdirectory of ~/Maildir (this was just to make sure there were no side effect with this). I have deleted some expunged mails to be sure : at its next cycle, the file ~/Maildir/maildirsize contained expected value. So yes, I do know expunged mails in the expunged directory are counted (size, number of mails). So I've taken a look at the source code, adding some i_info(...) at different places of the quota and lazy_expunge plugins. >From the source code reading session, I understand that : 1. In src/lazy-expunge/lazy-expunge-plugin.c 1.1. lazy_expunge_mail_storage_init() sets the expunged mails namespace flag with NAMESPACE_FLAG_NOQUOTA 1.2. lazy_expunge_mail_storage_init() is called by lazy_expunge_mail_storage_created() 1.3. lazy_expunge_mail_storage_created() is part of the callback list hook_mail_storage_create 2. In src/plugins/quota/quota-storage.c: 2.1. The only place in the whole dovecot source code where NAMESPACE_FLAG_NOQUOTA is checked is in function quota_mailbox_list_created() 3. In src/plugins/quota/quota-plugin.c: 3.1 quota_plugin_init() add quota_mailbox_list_created() to the callback list hook_mailbox_list_created. >From my observations : - Callback functions in quota_mailbox_list_created are called _before_ callback functions in hook_mail_storage_create. - This observation led me to move the piece of code that sets NAMESPACE_FLAG_NOQUOTA from lazy_expunge_mail_storage_init() to lazy_expunge_mail_storage_created(). - But there, lazy_expunge_mail_storage_created() is called after quota_mail_storage_created() because names of the library files are lib10_quota_plugin.so and lib02_lazy_expunge_plugin.so. - There I have also learnt that callback functions of the same list are called in the reverse order compared to the library filenames. So see if my observations were right, I have renamed lib10_quota_plugin.so to lib01_quota_plugin.so, then it worked. But I doubt this is the right way to fix it. This also reverses the order other callbacks between the two plugins are called, which migh not be expected at all. I'm not event sure moving some code from lazy_expunge_mail_storage_init() to lazy_expunge_mail_storage_created() was right : I've improvized the reading the source code and do not understand the whole logic, so I suppose this could break something else. Hi Timo... I made the plugin like you say. The header part is saved by dovecot, with o_stream_send , and the body with my function. This implementation, works fine. But i need to get / change some values to create the "link" from header to body. When a email is saved, have the S an W flags, that is the size of email. There is a way to increase this Flags ? I need to put one more line in the header, to have some link to body. To Increase the S Flag i increase the ostream.offset, but the W is based in the offset from istream, that's right ? There is a way to do this without rewrite the read function !? Exemple, when the email is moved from tmp to cur.

Hi, I'd like to try dovecot as a imapproxy in front of a webmailer. Authentication should be done by the main dovecot-imapserver. It works if I specify the user in passdb passwd-file: user2::0:0::::proxy=yes host=[ip-address] ssl=any-cert starttls=yes nopassword=y Is there some kind of catch-all function to pass all users to the main dovecot-imapserver without knowing the valid users? dovecot: 1.2.9 thx Martin

[Dovecot] Plugins and message file access

Hello. I need to know how I can get the final message file name inside a plugin like the zlib 2.0 plugin. I saw another threads about zlib plugin, but don't see no one asking about this. My interest is to use the message's file name in a specific function that will add some lines on it and, after that, calculate a md5 hash of the modified file. As the size flags will not correspond to the effective message size/vsize, then I could change the flags using the filename too, right? This is my first approach. But... There are another way to do this directly on message been received by the plugin, like pre-allocating the size/vsize flags? I cannot simply to pass the extra text directly on the message being received because I need to do some extra validations over the full content of the message before add my data on the message. [Dovecot] corrupted transaction log errors causing users mail to disappear temporarily

So Ive been looking into some problems with users reporting their mail goes missing for a second but then re-apears very soon after. I have tracked it down to happening at the same time these appear in the logs. Seems the transaction logs is getting corrupted somehow and then rebuilding itself (which works fine). The problem is while its re-builing the users think all of their mail is gone. May 3 09:35:52 mailmachine dovecot: IMAP(test(a)domain.com): Corrupted transaction log file usershomedir/Maildir/dovecot.index.log seq 3: Invalid transaction log size (32708 vs 32840): usershomedir/Maildir/dovecot.index.log (sync_offset=32708) We are using load balanced servers and data/index's are stored in their home dir's over nfs. All my config details and nfs options are below. We are currently balancing based on source address so most of the time users imap/pop processes should stick to one machine as much as possible. Hello folks I'm trying to use Dovecot deliver LDA instead Postfix virtual LDA The last road block I have to resolve is to define mail_uid, becaus dovecot.err log has these error messages: May 04 14:57:19 deliver(user1(a)some_domain.com): Error: User user1(a)some_domain.com is missing UID (set mail_uid) May 04 14:57:19 deliver(user2(a)some_domain.com): Error: User user2(a)some_domain.com is missing UID (set mail_uid) May 04 14:57:25 deliver(user3(a)some_domain.com): Error: User user3(a)some_domain.com is missing UID (set mail_uid) Where exactly should I define mail_uid? Somewhere in Dovecot dovecot.conf file? I tried to set mail_uid in dovecot-sql.conf in user_query as follows: user_query = SELECT maildir as mail, 51 as userdb_uid, 51 as userdb_gid, 51 as mail_uid FROM dovecot_email_maps WHERE email = '%u' But this apparently doesn't provide that mail_uid as I expected. Hi, I'm using RoundCube and I asked RC team to add ACL support, but there is a problem with renaming ACL protected folders. Users don't have permissions to deleting/renaming some folders. It works well, but every imap talk when renaming folders ends with: OK Rename completed. but the name of folder isn't changed. Hi, I have a mail server (postfix/dovecot) running so far with normal local /etc/passwd users for domain example.com. mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir passdb pam { } userdb passwd { } Is it possible to add virtual domains/users to my setup without changing example.com to a virtual domain? I can do the postfix part with http://www.postfix.org/VIRTUAL_README.html#virtual_mailbox but I'm not sure if I can mix dovecot (IMAP and maybe smtp auth) for both local and virtual users. I Made some tests in zlib plugin, and in ostream file (ostream-zlib.c) in o_stream_zlib_sendv function, have it: stream->ostream.offset += bytes; In struct mail_save_context, have saved_physical_size and it can be updated, acording with the observation. /* if non-zero, overrides the physical size that should be saved. for example when using zlib plugin, this would contain the mail's uncompressed size. */ uoff_t saved_physical_size; in file zlib-plugin.c in zlib_mail_save_compress_finish function, have it: ctx->saved_physical_size = ctx->output->offset; It's a update to offset (the size of email) in zlib, but if you update this value with a new number, the W flag in email is NOT updated. I'm looking at the possibility of using shared folders to solve a particular problem for my employer and I have a few questions: 1) Can shared folders be in mbox format while allowing the user's mail to be in maildir format? (I think the answer is yes, but wanted to check). 2) What version of dovecot should I be running in order to support shared folders? 3) Is there a good overview document that people could recommend I read that describes how best to set up shared folders under dovecot (and perhaps also gives an overview of shared folder usage in IMAP mail clients in general)? I believe I have the configuration set to use START TLS on IMAP4 (143) and POP3 (110) ports. However, it does not seem to be working. Yet "STARTTLS" is listed as a capability (which tells me I probably do have it configured right). Hi all, ok, I couldn't quite find this in any of the documentation, so I figured I would ask here. In preparation to move to version 2.0 to take advantage of the mutiple IP and SSL cert options that are coming, it would be really nice to be able to include other config files in the main config file, so that I don't have to edit the main config in order to add new IP addresses or certs... Does dovecot currently have the ability to include another config file when it is parsing the main config??? If not, is that something that we can put on the wish list? Thanks, Tim.

I have quota with userdb sql override. When i overpass 100M deliver reject the message. I have 200M in sql. Deliver don't query the database. Following delivery big msgs (over quoted) ends with an error: "Not enough disk space" (this is correct, because the quota is really ended) - 3. Following delivery small msgs (above quoted) ends well, msgs are delivered (used 3304 blocks and etc.) Our setup: -- slackware 11.0, x86_32 -- linux 2.6.31.6 -- dovecot 1.2.11 -- mailbox(not maildir) via NFS storage. All i want is: public/info public/group/internal public/foo public/foo/bla on info, everybody can read on group/internal - only group has full access to internal public/foo/bla - read write for everyone The flags (seen, ...) is stored for all. I'd like to have a variable substitute take the domain name part, lower case it, MD5 it, and take a 2-character substring of that. Would that be like %2MLd ? The documentation on the H hash modifier described reversing with R, but expresses it at %3RHu which seems to me like it would be reversing the hash result rather than the user string. I'm undecided about MD5 vs. hash, and could go either way. But I was thinking: mail_location = /data/mail/%2MLd/%Ld/%2MLn/%Ln

Hi I'am using dovecot with quota_rule stored in mysql user table, and quota usage stored in mysql dict ###### Quota ############# dict { quotadict = mysql:/usr/local/etc/dovecot-quota.conf } plugin { quota = dict:user::proxy::quotadict quota_rule2 = Trash:storage=10%% quota_rule3 = Sent:ignore #quota_rule = *:storage=10M } ################################### Everything works as expected, but I have some inconveniences for domains with large number of mailboxes. Allocating and maintain quota to every account it's a hard job. I just want to implement some flexibility for this situations (ex the first enforcement to be the user quota and the second to be the domain quota). Is there a way to implement such thing in dovecot and what are the adjustments that I need to do. Regards Alex

I had hoped that this beta5 would be almost the same as RC1, but I didn't have time to put everything there yet, and thought beta4 is way too old already. The few things that should still be done: - Change expire-tool to be a plugin for doveadm expunge command - doveadm mailbox * commands should use UTF-8 for mailbox names, not mUTF-7 (and add -7, -8 parameters to switch between them) - THREAD command seems to be crashing - some other bugfixes Some of the changes since beta4: - default_login_user is now "dovenull". You should create this user. - imap, pop3 -u <user> now does userdb lookup + changes privileges if necessary, so it's much easier to start imap/pop3 session for a specific user from command line - doveadm has all kinds of new commands and changes - PostgreSQL supports now multiple connections to backend. Also supports load-balancing / HA by specifying multiple host parameters. MySQL and PostgreSQL now share the same code for that. - probably lots of other things I can't think of right now. h

I use dovecot, vpopmail. I wish to restrict a mail user's login to its mailbox according to its ip address. I don't wish other users to be affected . Namely, for instance, abc(a)domain.com can login to its mailbox from a few specific ip addresses but the same user will not able to login from anywhere. Meanwhile normally other mail users can login to their mailboxes from all ip addresses. How can I do that with dovecot acl ? any advice.

hello, dovecot2 implements "!include conf.d/*.conf" to build the configuration from multiple configfiles. So the settings for pop3, imap or lmtp may stay in different files. unfortunately the "protocol = " does not allow a += logic to enables or disable inet listeners. I would not have expected this upon implementing sieve. And I really need to get around this limitation. LDA has no problem writing to these large mbox files. Why does sieve have a problem with them? [Dovecot] List shared folders

Good morning! I run an imap-only Ubuntu 8.04 mail server with dovecot 1.2 and pam_ldap, so all my users are posix users. No virtual user or domain, no sql so far. I am setting up shared folders with "namespace shared". I got no errors upon restarting the service, but I get no shared folders listing. As per the wiki http://wiki.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes/Shared I can use a bdb file or sql connection to keep the listing. But when I use a single bdb file like: plugin { acl_shared_dict = file:/var/lib/dovecot/shared-mailboxes.db } everytime a user logs in, this file get its ownership to the user with 0600 mode. I could use an sql dictionary, but since I dont have any sql params on my configs I am not sure where to store connection params like user, password and host for database. Can anybody help me with that? My goal is to allow my users to shared selected folders with other users, hope to be in the right path. Thanks and regards. -- Marcio Merlone

I need to prevent some accounts from deleting there emails. >From what I've seen [0] this could be achieved by using ACL. My first question is, is this right? Is there a way to achieve the same using POP3? I tried setting up ACL using the info at the Wiki [1], but it's not working. Hi, After many hours of testing, I've finally tracked down the issue I have been having with dovecot's SSL support. The problem is that the SSL certs result in "TLS handshaking: SSL_accept() syscall failed: Connection reset by peer" errors *if the certificate granted is not granted for client use*. For servers, I normally generate SSL certificates specifically for servers: [ server_ca_extensions ] basicConstraints = CA:false keyUsage = keyEncipherment extendedKeyUsage = 1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.1 If you just do that, then the SSL certificate doesn't work in dovecot (it will work fine in Apache, or Postfix etc etc). You also need the certificate to be valide for client side work: [ client_and_server_ca_extensions ] basicConstraints = CA:false keyUsage = digitalSignature, keyEncipherment extendedKeyUsage = 1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.2, 1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.1 I believe this is a fault with Dovecot. This is with the Debian package for Dovecot 1.2.11 (Version: 1:1.2.11-1). The default self-signed certificate the Debian post-install script generates pops out a certificate that is valid for everything, which is why it works by default out of the box. Matthew

Command output: Can't open log file /var/log/dovecot/error.log: Permission denied ) So I'm looking at http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA to see what I can do about it. I would have hoped some comments in the example config file would have mentioned this and suggested a default practice solution. Is this something few people or many people encounter (among those using dovecot/deliver from Postfix)? If I do as the wiki describes and make separate log files for dovecot/deliver to use, do I just make them owned by Postfix? It would seem to me a different directory might be more helpful (absent log files could be created by having the directory permissions. I'm also thinking in terms of log rotations, too ... and I prefer to do log rotations by date stamping rather than pushing sequence numbers (the legacy log rotation). Any chance there are %-style variables I can use in log file/path names to make log files automatically named by the date (and maybe time) ... kind of like in a shell script I would do: `date +/path/to/tree/%Y/%m/%d.log` or such.

I've Google'd to exhaustion and can't seem to find an answer to my problem. I'm not sure if the problem is TBird 3 or my Dovecot setup. The basic problem is that when I launch TBird and it grabs messages upon startup, it takes forever to supposedly pull them down. Once it's got them they sort relatively quickly into the proper IMAP (dovecot) folders. I don't use sieve yet; I sort with TBird rules. I don't sync messages for offline use. The only thing TB stores locally is the index cache, which I deleted and had TB rebuild once, which didn't help. All that did was waste more time, as I've got 40,000 messages in my IMAP folders which had to be re-indexed by TB. (I save all list mail for future searching). As an example of this problem, I'd not checked my email for just over day, had ~300 messages waiting in /var/mail/stan. TBird starts pulling them from dovecot and says in the status bar "downloading x of ~300". As I watch the count tick up +10 at a whack, the TB process is pegged at 100%, there is zero network activity, and the imap process on the server shows zero cpu use. It took over 60 seconds to "pull" the messages, after which TB sorted them. During the apparent sorting process, there is quite a bit of network activity and the imap process on the server is relatively busy. I say "pull" in quotes because the entire time TB is saying it's pulling more messages there is no network activity. The client and server are plugged into the same 100BaseT FDX switch (FDX verified), and the server has zero load. I know TBird isn't the greatest IMAP client around, but I think taking over 60 seconds just to download ~300 messages is way too damn long given the hardware resources, network, and load on the client and server machines. TB basically seems to be pulling, or dovecot serving, only about 5 messages/sec over 100Mb ethernet, which is abysmal performance given neither the server nor client have any load. The messages are mostly list mail which are at max a few kilobytes each. I'm leaning toward a problem with TBird but I've been unable to find a bug report that covers this, nor a forum post anywhere, etc. The closest I've found for "slow startup" are recommendations to compact folders. I have no local folders to compact. I delete immediately and expunge on exit. Anyone have any ideas? Other than switching to LDA+sieve and have TB check the IMAP folders for new mail? -- Stan

Hi I've just compiled dovecot under Slitaz, but I can't get it to run... Hi, I have tried to use /dev/shm for Dovecot's index files: > mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u:INDEX=/dev/shm/%u But it does not seem to like it. May 21 07:13:59 IMAP(user): Error: stat(/dev/shm/user/.imap/INBOX) failed: Permission denied (euid=1234(user) egid=500(group) missing +x perm: /dev/shm) It seems to me that /dev/shm permissions are OK. Any suggestions on how to achieve this?

I'm currently trying to configure a linux mailserver running centos to use an xserve running snow leopard. I am configuring the mailserver to run dovecot,sendmail,clamav,spam assassin and squirrelmail so it matches those used by the mac. The problem I am having is that I cannot get the server to authenticate properly to the macs LDAP database. As far as I can tell it is either a problem authenticating passwords or username and passwords. mail.app says its the password it cant authenticate Thunderbird says it could be either. It seems to be a problem in dovecot-ldap.conf, (as I can run ldapsearch from the linux server authenticate correctly and gain user information) What I'd like to know is there a standard set of settings required to authenticate to the LDAP on the mac? I'm currently running the od with no requirements for Kerberos, SSL or anything else it can authenticate with plain passwords (it will be once it is implemented I'm trying to have as few variables as possible at the moment). Copy of dovecot-ldap.conf below; 1. This file is opened as root, so it should be owned by root and mode 0600. # 1. http://wiki.dovecot.org/AuthDatabase/LDAP # 1. NOTE: If you're not using authentication binds, you'll need to give 2. dovecot-auth read access to userPassword field in the LDAP server. 3. With OpenLDAP this is done by modifying /etc/ldap/slapd.conf. Hi list! I am trying to get dovecot to authenticate users against Novell eDirectory via LDAP. I have successfully gotten open-xchange to authenticate, and I have written a PHP module that authenticates, however I cannot seem to get Dovecot working. [Dovecot] POP3 Problem with SPAM-Mail's over sieve

Hi together, i am currently using dovecot 1.2.10 with the sieve-plugin and use a sieve-filter to sort the SPAM-Mail's directly into a Junk-Folder: require "fileinto"; # rule:[junkfilter] if header :contains "X-Spam-Flag" "YES" { fileinto "Junk"; } My problem is now, if i try to retrieve the Mails via POP3, i did not get the SPAM-Mail's in the Junk-Folder, only the normal ones, that are not filtered over the sieve plugin. hi, we have IMAP and SMTP (sendmail(solaris)) on different hosts. Sendmail delivers Mails via LMTP to Cyrus and Cyrus puts the mails into the (hopefully) right box. Now I want to replace the Cyrus host with Dovecot. I've searched a bit in Google but there isn't much about LMTP via TCP in combination with DoveCot. Version 2 seems to be get the feature, but we have round about 5k users, so beta is no choice. Also I red something about maidag (mailutils from Gnu) that could do the Job, but maybe there is a better way. I do not want to install Postfix (or any other SMTP service) on that IMAP Server. So I'm asking is there anybody who has the same construct. Important is, that Quota full etc. messages (RFC) gets back to sendmail, so that the MTA reject the mails, before accepting. cu denny

I don't think this really need per-user option. This is basically "system folders" and MUA will decide on their local names. Combining with autocreate plugin seems reasonable.

[Dovecot] logging

I am looking through the logging options and wondering if there are a couple of things that we can do 1. Logouts don't seem to show the IP address of the logout, we typically see multiple sessions at a time and wondering if there is a way to tie the logouts to an IP 2. POP logouts show the number of messages retrieved/deleted but I don't see a way to do this with IMAP, is there a logout option for this with imap? Thanks

I'm still kinda weak on Python (don't know all the cool tricks, yet), and Pike isn't found universally, so things would need to be in C for me to do it and it to be widely usable. [Dovecot] looking for IMAP testing tool

I'm looking for an IMAP testing tool, suitable to use with Dovecot IMAP. It needs to support TLS, STARTTLS, and login/authentication. It needs to be able run from command line, shell scripts, and even do so under cron jobs (e.g. a way to supply the password to use w/o a terminal prompt). Typical interactive mail clients just don't cut it (even the text mode ones). One reason is I need to do the tests on a number of machines, under a number of user and domain names, and with a variety of parameters or destinations. This is for a suite of regression tests I am putting together intended to verify that configuration changes do not break things (or unbreak things that are supposed to not work). Anyone ever heard of such a tool? Open source would be preferred (better yet, my favorite programming languages: C, Pike, Python).

I thought it would be nice to have vboxes insead of user logins ... Now I am confuesed and in trouble .. My server serves 2 domains so user1(a)domain1.com is the same as user1(a)domain2.org I've created the mail_location string with %n and static userdb with %n dovecot creates 2 mail user directories user1(a)domain1.com user1(a)domain2.org What the heck am I missing .. ?? hello, yesterday I tried to package dovecot-2.0beta5 + pigeonhole from Mercurial repository. I put pigeonhole as a subdir in the dovecot sourcetree. Following http://hg.rename-it.nl/dovecot-2.0-pigeonhole/raw-file/tip/INSTALL I called ./autogen.sh; ./configure --with-dovecot=..; make In the buildprocess I saw this output ( from autogen.sh ): Putting files in AC_CONFIG_AUX_DIR, `..'. libtoolize: `config.guess' exists: use `--force' to overwrite libtoolize: `config.sub' exists: use `--force' to overwrite libtoolize: `ltmain.sh' exists: use `--force' to overwrite I dont know *why* AC_CONFIG_AUX_DIR is .. but in .. there are the mentioned files (from dovecot) already present. Dovecot's transactions often write-lock dovecot.index.log twice (without unlocking in between), and then unlock it twice. Is that intended, or is that a bug? If I read the man pages correctly, double write-locking is pointless but safe. But double unlocking could cause data corruption during the period between the first and second unlocks, because the locks don't nest (are not refcounted). The first unlock leaves the file totally unlocked. Could this be the source of some index corruption errors? For example: 1. Process A acquires a F_WRLCK on a file. 2. Through a different code path, process A again acquires a F_WRLCK on the same file. Since these locks don't nest this is essentially a no-op. 3. Process A modifies the file. 4. Process A unlocks the file to undo the lock in step 2. Now the file has no lock on it at all. 5a. Process B locks, modifies, and unlocks the file. 5b. Process A also modifies the file, thinking that it still has a write lock. 6. Process A unlocks the file to undo the lock in step 1, but this is another no-op. Data corruption is possible if steps 5a and 5b conflict, or if 5b uses stale data. Here is a code path in dovecot-1.2.11 which exhibits the above behavior. "Outer" write lock: maildir_transaction_save_commit_pre -> maildir_transaction_save_commit_pre_sync -> maildir_sync_index_begin -> mail_index_sync_begin -> mail_index_sync_begin_to -> mail_index_sync_begin_init -> mail_transaction_log_sync_lock -> mail_transaction_log_lock_head -> mail_transaction_log_file_lock -> mail_index_lock_fd -> file_wait_lock -> file_lock_do "Inner" write lock: maildir_transaction_save_commit_pre -> maildir_sync_index_finish -> mail_index_sync_commit -> mail_index_write -> mail_transaction_log_rotate -> mail_transaction_log_file_create -> mail_transaction_log_file_create2 -> mail_transaction_log_file_lock -> mail_index_lock_fd -> file_wait_lock -> file_lock_do The file being locked is the same, dovecot.index.log. In another case, maildir_sync_index_begin is reached this way (outer lock): mailbox_sync -> mailbox_sync_init -> maildir_storage_sync_init -> maildir_sync_context -> maildir_sync_index_begin -> mail_index_sync_begin -> etc. And maildir_sync_index_finish is reached this way (inner lock): mailbox_sync -> mailbox_sync_init -> maildir_storage_sync_init -> maildir_sync_context -> maildir_sync_index_finish -> etc. Could these lead to data corruption?
