[Dovecot] Problem after migrating from mbox to maildir and squirrelmail

Hi all, I just finished migrating from mbox to maildir (and upgrade squirrelmail to the latest version) with some issue. We are using Postfix 2.3, Dovecot 1.2.7 and Squirrelmail 1.4.2. One of user report that suddenly all his Sent and Drafts emails were disapeared. After log in to webmail, I found out that there are 3 new folder called Drafts, Sent and Trash apart from Drafts,Sent,Trash underneath INBOX folder, and all his sent and draft emails were there. I thought I just move the email from Sent folder to the Sent underneath INBOX, but I was wrong. Now he got all sent emails in Sent items but after refreshed the webmail, INBOX wont open at all. it just blank but in the left side it said the amount of his email. what did i do wrong? is it something to do with the dovecot.index and index.cache or the uidlist? please enlighten me.... thank you Hendry

[Dovecot] dovecot transaction log permissions

So after some problems with NFS and transaction logs getting corrupted. Im tyring out storing them localy. via.. mail_location: maildir:~/Maildir:INDEX=/var/dovecot/indexes/%u the problem is with a large amount of users.. the indexes dir becomes huge with this setup. So a change to make this better is... mail_location: maildir:~/Maildir:INDEX=/var/dovecot/indexes/%d/%n to seperate the users dir's into domains. What seems to happen is dovecot creates the index's folder automaticly and its owned by that user.. eg.. drwx------ 3 10651674 2598184 4096 2010-06-02 19:08 domain.com this makes it so no other user of domain.com can get their transaction logs created cause the dir is owned by another user at that domain. Is there anyway around this? I see there used to be a umask option but that is gone in 1.2.x. -- Jordan Tardif DreamHost

Hello ISSUE: Intermittently getting username and password authentication in clients both OUTLOOK 2007 and latest Thunderbird, indicating that the client is not authenticated with the server. Ie the username and password dialogue constantly reappears. This only appears as more users logged into the system. TEMP FIX: Restart Dovecot. Hello. We are planning a migration from Sun One Messaging Server to Dovecot+Postfix+Ldap. We are using Dovecot 1.2.11 with Sun One Directory Server 5.2 ldap (we will migrate to Directory Server 6.3.1) soon. In our University we have 65.000 students, 5.500 staff and 6.500 teachers. Our main ldap realm is dc=us,dc=es (us means University of Seville, Spain). We have two e-mail domains, @us.es (staff+teachers) and @alum.us.es (students). We use Sun One Directory Server to load data to our ldap from several sources (like Oracle databases, flat files, etc) Our ldap tree is like this: dc=us,dc=es | |----->ou=People,dc=us,dc=es // "special" users only used by apps | | |----->o=us.es,dc=us,dc=es // ldap branch for staff+teachers | | |----->o=alum.us.es,dc=us,dc=es // ldap branch for students A user id is unique, so there is only a "john_doe" in the ldap tree (I repeat, there is NOT uid=john_doe,o=us.es,dc=us,dc=es and uid=john_doe,o=alum.us.es,dc=us,dc=es). Below you will find a copy of the dovecot.conf and dovecot-ldap.conf. Our operating system is Red Hat Enteprise Linux 5 x64. These are our questions: 1) We are unable to make dbox work with quota, but we have no problem with maildir. Quota is stored in a ldap attibute called "mailQuota" 2) A user can be in different branches in the same time: for example, a teacher called pepito should be in the uid=pepito,o=us.es,dc=us,dc=es branch but if that teacher is also a student should have another ldap entry uid=pepitosurname,o=us.es,dc=us,dc=es. Our identity management is the piece of software that "promotes" a user in that case. How should we use "mail_location" to addres this? 3) We are planning to use two raid5 of 8 SAS 15.000 rpm disks for these mailboxes. We will use a "2.0, ajax-based webmail" like roundcube. Most of our users will use webmail (imap based). How many iops should we have in that enviroment? We would like to use dbox, but we are stuck in maildir because 1) 4) Some users could have their mailboxes "disabled". We use the following line: user_filter = (&(objectClass=inetorgperson)(uid=%n)(mailUserStatus=active)) but it does NOT work as expected. Any idea) 5) We are planning to use bacula to backup user mailboxes. Any known problem with this (i will ask in the bacula mailing list anyway) 6) I have read carefully perfomance in dovecot wiki. Can I use noatime in /etc/fstab safely with dovecot? Any perfomance hint apart from we already have in our config files? 7) When we set vacation messages they work but we see this error in the log: dovecot: deliver(jorgelp): file_dotlock_create(~/.dovecot.lda-dupes) failed: No such file or directory 8) When a user log in she uses his username "mary" (without @us.es or @alum.us.es) . Our dovecot search in all the ldap tree until it finds that uid. But we would like to store in our mail_location /buzones/us.es or /buzones/alum.us.es. How can we accomplish this? Hi, I'm trying to configure shared mailboxes using ACLs. On dovecot 1.2.10 it works fine, but the same configuration on dovecot 2.0. beta4 doesn't work. [Dovecot] mangled user_attrs from LDAP

I have setup dovecot to allow users to login using their email address or uid and have found a strange behaviour when the user logs in using the email address for a "username". I am using OpenLDAP for a backend data store with a rather customized schema. This behaviour occurs for both POP3 and IMAP logins. For some users it works as expected, but for others the pass_attrs->user does not get mapped back to the uid, but remains the mailLocalAddress (dovecot-ldap.conf is attached at the end of this post). Here is an excerpt from the logs for a working and a malfunctioning user. This behaviour has been found with both OpenLDAP: slapd 2.3.39 and OpenLDAP: slapd 2.4.17, and is consistent with standard LDAP behaviour (ie, there is no guaranteed ordering in the LDAP database). A brief look at the code, seems to indicate that the values are being pulled from the LDAP return struct in a step-wise manner, which could certainly put them out of sync with the request if it is assumed that they will always be returned in the same order....This is just based on a quick review of the code though, and not any detailed tracing. Is it possible to configure dovecot in a manner that only the imap process respects the quota, and the local delivery ignores completely the quota? I think it should happen if I don't activate the quota plugin in the lda section but only in the imap section. protocol lda { ... # mail_plugins = ... } protocol imap { ... mail_plugins = quota imap_quota ... } Will it work or will it result in a big mess? I've the aim that a mail will never be rejected because the recipient is over his/her quota. Regards, Holger

[Dovecot] Problems with the IMAP proxy after upgrading from dovecot 1.1.16 to 1.211

We have frequent timeout problems after upgrading our imap servers from dovecot 1.1.16 to dovecot 1.2.11. One server acts as proxy only, and the other one is the "real" imap server". The credentials for the proxy service are stored in a remote MYSQL database. There were no trouble with dovecot 1.1.16. But now, with the most recent version, we get frequent login failures. It seems dovecot reconnects too late to the MySQL database after a timeout, after sending the SQL query. When mail is sent from the mail server, it shows up as originating from the MAIN ip address of the server, 173.50.101.11, when the mail server is bound to 173.50.101.12. I have already set smtp_bind_address: 173.50.101.12 in main.cf and 173.50.101.12:smtp inet - - smtpd in master.cf. This prevents smtp connects TO any other ip but 173.50.101.12 BUT mail STILL shows up originating from eth1, where 173.50.101.12 is eth1:2 I think this is *nix related and most here, on dovecot mailing list, could provide help.

There appear to be two issues here: the uidvalidity mismatch, and the path in the "rebuilding indexes" message does not match the path in the "uidvalidity mismatch" error.

Hello, I've got dovecot 1.2.11 running on Fedora 12 (x86_64) with the managesieve protocol and sieve plugins enabled, with deliver handling local delivery. I've set disable_plaintext_auth = yes ssl = yes ssl_cert_file = /etc/pki/dovecot/certs/dovecot.pem ssl_key_file = /etc/pki/dovecot/private/dovecot.pem mail_debug = yes protocol managesieve { listen = *:2000 login_executable = /usr/libexec/dovecot/managesieve-login mail_executable = /usr/libexec/dovecot/managesieve } and generated local SSL certificates; everything is going fine on the IMAP end of things (clients ask if I trust the certificate the first time, etc). I've open the appropriate ports, etc. No problems with mail delivery. However, I can't connect to the managesieve daemon. I've tried the Emacs client[1], and it just hangs. I tried manual login to port 2000 and here's what happened: joel@chondestes: /etc/mail > gnutls-cli --starttls -p 2000 localhost Resolving 'localhost'... Hello, While testing mailbox conversion I encountered a Panic in dsync on a few users mailboxes. Running dovecot 2.0.beta4 on RedHat Enterprise Linux 5 (x86_64). When Dovecot is in proxy mode, the client sends along the original connection endpoints in an ID command. Is there any chance 'doveadm who' could use this to display the original connection source? As it currently stands, all I see is a bunch of connections from the proxy. [Dovecot] Auto forward virtual users mail using Sieve

Hi All I'm trying to configure Dovecot to automatically forward mail to another account without the virtual user having to log-in first to Roundcube web mail. These are virtual users with no log-in to the server only Roundcube's web interface The situation is that I have two domains only who want to receive email at their domains, get a forwarded copy at their hotmail account, then log-in to Roundcube to reply. A Sieve script running in Dovecot seems the way to go, but the finer points of configuration have failed me. I got as far as 1) /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf Adding: protocol lda { mail_plugins = cmusieve mail_plugin_dir = /usr/lib/dovecot/modules/lda } 2) /var/vmail/___domain___/___user___/.dovecot.sieve Created the .dovecot.sieve file in the domain/user directory and added: require ["fileinto ","reject","vacation","imapflags","relational","regex","notify"]; # Resend a copy of the message to another address # if true { redirect "julian(a)flatearth.co.uk"; } Which doesn't seem to have broken anything. It seems that Dovecot isn't configured to use send via Deliver ? My conf is pasted before (Exim handles regular domain email forwarding mail for a bunch of virtual domains to pop accounts.) We're using the SQLite backend for authentication of Postfix SASL. When the db is replaced we HUP dovecot to close and reopen its connection. During this time it appears the socket file is removed and Postfix rejects the authentication attempt. [Dovecot] Dovecot aspects of fighting spam

I see no documents in the Dovecot documents wiki on how Dovecot features can be used in the fight against spam. One hit came up in a search, and it was about how to fight spam in the MoinMoin Wiki itself (e.g. TextCHAs and such). I already asked in another thread about removing message files at the search from a designated "learn-spam" folder. My next question would be how to automatically place detected spam into a specific folder for the user to access or ignore as they deem fit. That would seem to me to be something for the deliver command and its -m option. But this might be more of a Dovecot and MTA coordination issue, too (e.g. how to get the spam detection done in the MTA ... Postfix in my case ... to become a label of some sort that ends deciding the folder. The -m option might be harder to get it dynamically set since it would be hard coded in master.cf for Postfix (so a variable has to be able to direct it to INBOX in this case). But maybe the "standard" way of doing this is to shim another program between the MTA (Postfix for me) and the LDA (Dovecot deliver) to dynamically add the -m option on the fly? Lacking any other clever solution, this seems to me to be the way I could make it work. Maybe there is a special header deliver could detect, such as "X-Spam: yes"? A wiki document on how Dovecot helps (or how to help Dovecot) in the fight against spam, I think, would be helpful.

[Dovecot] configuring sendmail to work with dovecot+LDAP

I would like to setup dovecot (1.1.20) with LDAP virtual users, but I don't seem to understand how to get my sendmail to accept mail for the virtual users. (I am rather new to this, so I may have some misunderstandings) I have followed - wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/DovecotOpenLdap (OpenLDAP 2.3.43) and I think I have IMAP working for virtual users. I can connect to port 143, enter a username and password and it works. Now I surmise I need to configure my SMTP server to accept mail for these LDAP virtual users, and deliver it appropriately. (The above HowTo doesn't address this step, from what I can tell) I read - wiki.dovecot.org/LDA and wiki.dovecot.org/LDA/Sendmail (I'm using OpenBSD 4.7, which uses sendmail for MTA / SMTP server, sendmail version 8.14.3) For sendmail.cf, I made the changes in my sendmail.mc file to include the dovecot mailer (calling /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver), and compiled with m4 and installed the new sendmail.cf For dovecot.conf, I edited the portions (abbreviated): protocol lda { auth_socket_path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-master } and auth default { socket listen { master {path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-master }}} When I try to test this, (telnet www.example.org 25) If I try: MAIL TO:jdoe@www.example.org I get "User unknown" I see that if I try: MAIL TO:jdoe@example.org I get "Relaying denied" Either way it doesn't get delivered. I have recipient_delimiter = + in main.cf (Postfix). But deliveries to dovecot/deliver are still being rejected. It appears that the full email is still in the envelope (e.g. phil+howard(a)example.com which I want to be delivered to phil(a)example.com) Is that how it's supposed to work and Dovecot just doesn't support this?

Greetings list! We've been experiencing an intermittent issue in which none users are able to log into the mail server for about 10 to 20 minutes. This issue first appeared on our CentOS 4 box running dovecot 1.2.11 after upgrading from the stock version 0.99. The issue persists after migrating our users to a CentOS 5 server - also running version dovecot 1.2.11 but now in the 64-bit flavor. Our users authenticate against LDAP via PAM in case that might be relevant. I've yet to find anything "of interest" in the logs covering the outages. But here is what I've noticed: * Users on our internal network are still able to authenticate and login. * Users from the outside are "Disconnected for inactivity" * Immediately after the restart, external users were able to log in again. It almost sounds like the firewall is blocking external access except that: * The version of dovecot was the thing that changed * Everything starts working again after a dovecot restart If anyone could provide some insight, I'd sure appreciate it. Hello, I am looking for a command-line utility to automatically purge one Maildir folder. I want to periodically run sa-learn from cron, and after the spam learning folder has been added to the Bayes database, its contents should be deleted. I've searched a bit, but only found a few old utilities or some telnet+expect scripts, which both didn't look too reliable. Is there any command-line utility to delete all contents of a Maildir folder, or is there any other solution? Thanks, Florian

I've deleted some empty IMAP folders, using Thunderbird. Hi Stephan, ManageSieve uses the wrong™ service name for the authdb lookup. With dovecot-1.2-managesieve the service name was changed from 'managesieve' to 'sieve'. So I altered my table layout in order to make the query "SELECT userid AS "user", password FROM dovecotpassword('%Ln', '%Ld') WHERE %Ls" work again. Hi, I've a set of public mailboxes that all users can access. The index is stored per user, so each user can mark the message as read for themselves. This is with dovecot 1.2.10. However, when selecting the mailbox, system flags are not announced as permanent but only as session flags: 3619 SELECT "public.Admin" * FLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft) * OK [PERMANENTFLAGS ()] Read-only mailbox. * 324 EXISTS * 0 RECENT * OK [UNSEEN 171] First unseen. * OK [UIDVALIDITY 1254326934] UIDs valid * OK [UIDNEXT 1102] Predicted next UID * OK [HIGHESTMODSEQ 1] Highest 3445 OK [READ-ONLY] Select completed. I think (reading the RFC, but I bet you know it better than me) that FLAGS should also been set in PERMANENTFLAGS since they can be permanent. Hi, I'm using dovecot 2.0.beta5 (IMAP and LMTP+sieve) and I'm getting lots of errors like this: Warning: /data/mail/4567/Maildir/dovecot-uidlist: Duplicate file entry at line 3: 1274182284.M635158P16414.mail,S=767,W=785:2,S (uid 5 -> 16) All data is stored on local disk (ext3, no NFS!). As this is a fresh installation of dovecot I do not know if older versions work better. One user complained about loosing email from inbox but I guess that's probably a user error :) I think that the error might be related to deliveries via LMTP as this (new) functionality has not been tested extensivly (?) With 1.2.11 and mbox storage, the delay time in pulling new mail headers to the client from imap folders seems to be directly proportional to mailbox size, regardless of the number of new messages. At present, if the mailbox is large, pulling new headers is rather painfully slow. Is this expected behavior? Especially given that the client already has all the "old" mails in the folder cached, and thus wouldn't be asking for them? Is there a setting(s) I can change to optimize/fix this? -- Stan

Hi there, I've been working on rolling out the "deliver" service so we can implement sieve. Dovecot 1.2.11, Postfix 2.6.6, FreeBSD 8, installed by ports. Clustered environment, NFS backend. Everything is working great for the most part, I'm using it to sort a copy of my personal email on a test server. However, I noticed two emails were not properly sorted. I had added a rule (using Ingo, nice little piece of software) to redirect the nightly FreeBSD security output emails into a folder "servers". However, nothing had triggered that rule, and the "Maildir/.servers" directory had not yet been created. I'm assuming they were all sent to deliver at the same time, they all thought they needed to make the directory, the one with msgid 20100529070110.17A781B53B9(a)mail-out02.xecu.net was able to make the directory and get delivered, whereas the other two freaked out because they couldn't make the directory they thought needed to be made, and just sent the mail to the inbox. That's a reasonable approach, although I wonder if deliver/sieve could be (or perhaps "has been in 2.0") adjusted to more intelligently handle that edge case. Also, I'm wondering about "dovecot_destination_recipient_limit = 1". Hi, would it be possible to prevent users who try to login from an unresolved IP from connecting to Dovecot IMAP? I have a suspicion that it should be done via the authentication module (ie PAM) but I am not sure (if this is the case could someone recommend a good resource or even a solution). For example sendmail has a relevant macro to achieve this, I was wondering if Dovecot can have similar behavior. Thanks

Hello, recently I inspected the sourcecode of the lmtp server. I searched for changes that would add return-path header. ( http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2010-February/046401.html ) But I found, that all mails are spooled via files in /tmp. Hello guys, Firstly I would like to state that I am fairly new to Dovecot. I have played around with it in the past here and there but mainly with debian packages. I have compiled this version of Dovecot from source, so please go easy with me. Ok now down to my questions: I am having trouble getting Dovecot to 'ignore' the Trash folder when summing up the used quota for a user. I am running Dovecot 1.2.11 (with LDA), Postfix 2.5.5, and Postfixadmin 2.3. I am able to send and receive emails fine. Roundcube displays the quota used but this quota also counts what is in the users Trash can. Postfix is configured to hand over delivering of the mail to Dovecot. I have tried different methods from the documentation on ignoring the Trash folder, but have not come up with anything that has worked yet. If someone could point me in the right direction, that would be great. Hi, I have a littel Problem. I?m running a Debian Lenny/Postfix/Dovecot Server. I hade immigrated from Courierer. Now I have the problem, that I get mail under Mail.app double. (same header, Message-ID ,...) When I use Thudnerbird under MacOS there is all OK. Are there some Configs that I need to make for MacOS / Mail.app ? Hi, I'm doing the final tests before I migrate my 10000 users from RHEL 4 + dovecot 1.1.20 to RHEL5 + dovecot 1.2.11, and I'm having some serious problems with outlook 2007 clients disconnecting very often. In dovecot's log I see lot of connects and disconnects from these clients (as oposed to my kmail, that just connects once when I come in and disconnects when I shut it off). After unchecking the "chek every X minutes" thing in outlook I get fewer of those -while functionality remains-, but the main problem still persists: every now and then (more or less 30 mins), the client disconnects, and sometimes the client goes offline. This didn't happen with my previous setup. I use the outlook-idle workaround, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Any ideas? Is there any way to still be able to login/delete email via dovecot-imap when the user's filesystem quota is exceeded? [Dovecot] Cannot Access Inbox

Hello Folks, Yesterday while messing around with procmail for SpamAssassin I had my IMAP client open and it lost it's ability to see my Inbox except for two messages. I tried another IMAP client and no success. I can see all other directories such as sent and the ones I have made. The mbox file is there and catable/grepable. I even made a new one. I can read a test account Inbox from the same server with my usual client. Also my small number of other users appear to be using pop3 as normal. Tried so far: * Multiple clients including pop3. * Removed spamd and procmail stuff. * Various permissions. * New mbox. * Restart everything, although I am not sure I rebooted the server last night. * Searched for lock files that may need to be deleted. * Googled. Server setup: * Mandriva Linux 2009.1 * Dovecot 1.1.13 * Postfix 2.5.6 The mailbox in question is my business and some personal email so I would greatly appreciate any help towards fixing this issue. I have some emails that I think are in the Postfix delivery queue going to Dovecot, but didn't get mapped to their alias (because I didn't have all the alias entries in when they were queued). I'm wondering if this trick would work. I have the mail being delivered to /home/mail/%Ld/%Ln/mail and am wondering if I could make a symlink at /home/mail/example.com/foo -> bar and add a dummy password for foo(a)example.com and have that mail trying to go to foo(a)example.com really go to bar@example and make a successful delivery (it is soft bouncing right now).

Now, mails can be downloaded only from .INBOX. Hello to the list! I've been asked to spec out the feasibility and, if feasible, plan a migration from Courier to Dovecot for both POP3 and IMAP for about 4 million mailboxes. I've been trying to absorb all the dovecot-related info I could over the past couple of weeks from the docs and from the list and I'm sure that I've muddled at least some of it, so apologies in advance if I make grossly incorrect assumptions. BTW, sorry for the giant email but I've got a bunch of questions. This is the sort of overly wordy email that makes my eyes glaze over in mailing lists. But I've got things configured to where (I think) everything will 'just work' if we migrate (barring running POP3 mailbox conversions), so I'm not looking for configuration help, just gotchas and assumption-checking mostly. Me breaking 4 million mailboxes isn't really a good move for my job security ;) * Since Dovecot 2.0 seems like it's just around the corner, that's all I've been testing, and indeed all I've even looked at. * This is a pretty fantastic piece of software. I love the neat little details that make admins' lives easier, e.g. how easy it is to use multiple SSL certs in the same server. That made me smile. I hadn't looked at dovecot in a number of years, so I was really impressed at the full feature set. It's been a while since I've played with a new server application that I've enjoyed this much. * Background: All of our mail is stored on NFS and will be for the foreseeable future, all in maildir format. Courier POP3/IMAP runs on load balanced Linux servers, so clients will be hitting multiple servers, though stickiness based on client IP address is currently done. Webmail as well is done on top of a local Courier IMAP server accessing the same NFS servers but on an entirely different pool of servers. All authentication is done against SQL. Courier has been very, very good to us over the past 9 years, but our NFS servers (12 Netapps) are unfortunately being beaten to death. We've got lots of users with thousands of emails in their inbox (i.e. in ./Maildir/cur/ alone) and I've seen plenty of mailboxes with 10's of thousands in their inbox and I've even seen some really scary ones approaching 100k emails just in cur/. Thanks to an endless cycle of industry raising mailbox limits, we actually have to support this (though not so much the 100k message ones, at least). * Our #1 main motivation for looking Dovecot is relief for our currently overtaxed NFS servers, mostly in the form of the index files. Benchmarking dovecot looks great, even with the index files in the maildir. I know the cool thing to do would be to move the index files to a separate NFS server running entirely on SSDs for the fastest accesses possible. Building a separate index NFS cluster obviously adds complexity and performance with the index files in the maildir seems pretty great already. But I also know that real life often makes assumptions made during benchmarks look very foolish. My inclination is to try things out with the indexes in the maildir directory (and then start looking at moving to a dedicated NFS server for the indexes in a subsequent phase) but I don't want to regret that choice later. Anybody with large-scale NFS maildir stores have any advice either way? * Exim: We currently deliver all of our mail via Exim on separate servers. Our POP3/IMAP servers only do POP3/IMAP and the Exim mail servers delivering to maildirs only do Exim. From what I've seen in the docs and various threads, from what I can gather, the best thing to do in that case would be to use Exim's built-in maildir handling, instead of using 'deliver'. That would be my preference anyway, but I wanted to make sure I didn't misinterpret things. * Any problems running Courier POP3 and Dovecot IMAP for a while, possibly Courier IMAP and Dovecot IMAP concurrently?: Since migrating POP mailboxes is going to be a mighty task, our gameplan would probably be to start migrating *just* IMAP services at first and likely on just a few servers at a time. Being load balanced, there are several scenarios where a user could theoretically access a mailbox on different servers and therefore end up hitting dovecot at one point in time and then later hitting courier or vice versa. Or they could use IMAP from one location and POP3 (during the span of time before we migrated our POP3 services) from another. I've not yet seen any side effects from switching mail servers like that (though I'm aware of what would happen if both dovecot and courier *POP3* were in service at the same time -- redownloaded mail, bleh). Has anyone seen otherwise? I'm not worried as much by the 0.1% of IMAP users who might be using advanced features but rather the other 99.9% who are using it pretty vanilla-ishly. * Union mailboxes: I'm pretty sure in a fairly recent thread that Timo said that something like a 'union' mailbox (at least with maildir) wasn't possible. I tried messing with multiple 'private' namespaces (i.e. a namespace called "ARCHIVE" with a "location" different than the INBOX location, ideally placed on slower but denser NFS servers) but even with 'hidden=no' and 'list=yes', only the main INBOX folders would show up, so I'm guessing that's not going to work. That would be a killer feature, to be able to serve an alternate namespace that would show up in a mail client's subscribable list that could be on slower storage than the main inbox (though I'm not sure a mail client can even handle multiple namespaces). * Any problems with keeping only quota limits in db and not current quota numbers? Our limits come out of a SQL table but the current counts just live in the maildir file. Trying to update quota counts in SQL for 4 million mailboxes is a non-starter for us at this point. >From what I've done, dovecot seems pretty happy to maintain the quota using the 'maildir' quota plugin but let it be overridden by the userdb lookup. So I think I'm fine on that count, but I'd love to hear from anyone knowing of extreme gotchas doing it that way. * Any problem with leaving the namespace in "Courier compatibility" mode? I.e. in namespace 'private', leaving "prefix = INBOX.". With 4 million mailboxes, FAQs all over the place, and support reps trained in a particular way of doing things in IMAP, it'd be hellish to try to change the prefix (I know I could leave the courier namespace around with 'hidden=yes' but retraining support staff is perhaps better left to phase #2). Do I lose anything besides tidiness by not changing it to "prefix =" as if I was deploying dovecot from scratch? Does it hurt performance in any significant way? Benchmarking doesn't look any different, so I'm guessing not. * One thing that threw me and might be good for a FAQ (unless it was just me misconfiguring things) was when I started playing with putting the index files in an alternate location. I was utterly perplexed why it'd create the directories for the indexes but they'd be empty. Based on their location and names when they're in the maildir, I was just looking for the same dovecot.index* files right in the alternate directory. It wasn't till I started strace'ing that I noticed that the index files were indeed getting created but in a subdirectory called .INBOX (and with me just doing 'ls'). * The courier-dovecot-migrate.pl does a fine job at converting our POP3 mailboxes. We'll definitely be doing a mass run of it across all of our mailboxes. But with this many mailboxes, there's no way to get around the time lag between the script getting run and new mail showing up. Which means that there'll be some number of new messages that will re-download in POP3 when the switchover to Dovecot POP3 is done. To keep from getting too many complaints from customers, I'm thinking that I might have to write a wrapper script to do something like compare the mtime of ./Maildir/new/ against dovecot-uidlist and overwrite if ./Maildir/new/ is newer or perhaps see if the mtime of courierpop3dsizelist is newer than dovecot-uidlist and only if that's the case execute the conversion script with --overwrite. Considering we get between 500-2000 POP3 logins/sec, running any script after a POP3 login terrifies me--even a 6 line bash script. Anybody have any opinions to share on that? With a pooled architecture, it's near impossible to only have some mailboxes hit Courier and some hit Dovecot and keep slowly incrementing. At best my available units of increments to migrate are a few thousand at a time and more realistically 10-20k at a time. If we're going to have to live with users complaining about a one-time redownload of just post-conversion mail, I'll need to get started convincing the higher-ups that that's life. Hello, bug or feature? I'm using Dovecot 1.2.11. And because of a migration projekt I'm tempted to use the listescape plugin. If I understood well, it plugin { escape_char = "%" } should change the escape character to %. But it doesnt. Bug or feature? But more important: # sieve fileinto "a.b"; does not work as expected - the folder is visible as "a.b" in a normal imap client - because of the listescape plugin. # sieve fileinto "a\\2eb"; works. But the user won't understand this. Any ideas? The wiki page which mentions mdbox talks about a "cleanup" step for mdbox: : The space is later freed in "cleanup" step. This may be done : automatically within the session or later in a nightly cronjob when : there's less disk I/O. The cleanup first finds all files that have : refcount=0 mails. Then it goes through each file and copies the : refcount>0 mails to other dbox files (to the same files as where newly : saved messages would also go), updates the map index and finally : deletes the original file. So there is never any overwriting or file : truncation. I was wondering if there was any code to actually do this, or any command-line tools (and if either of those where they might be), or whether it was just design musings at the minute. Regards, Bill

[Dovecot] mdbox: What format is the file "storage/dovecot.map.index" in? (Dovecot 2.0beta5)

I am looking at "mdbox" under Dovecot 2.0beta5. Looking at the documentation for "mdbox" I saw that we had a directory "storage" containing files "m.#" where "#" is an integer and a map file ("dovecot.map.index"). I think I expected the map file to be a plain text file with one record per line, but in fact it appears to contain binary data. According to the wiki ( http://wiki.dovecot.org/MailboxFormat/dbox ) the records go as: - map_uid: Unique growing 32 bit number for the message. - refcount: 16 bit reference counter for this message. Each time the message is copied the refcount is increased. - file_id: File number containing the message. For example if file_id=5, the message is in file m.5. - offset: Offset to message within the file. - size: Space used by the message in the file, including all metadata. The map file I have here is 1688 bytes in size (and I think there are 64 messages stored). Prime factors of 1688 are 2^3 x 211, so I think it is something other than just a straight array of fixed-size structures. Still, I can always look at the source if I really want to know :-) Regards, Bill

[Dovecot] newbie question about shared folders

I'm preparing to move our site to dovecot 1.2.11 and have a question about shared folders. We're currently using UW imap's mbx mailboxes for shared folders. We accomplish the sharing by use of file system permissions and ACLs. I notice that dovecot's method of sharing is more based on IMAP ACLs and apparently file system permissions are useful, but not necessary. On the main dovecot page, it says: "Dovecot allows mailboxes and their indexes to be modified by multiple computers at the same time..." So, my question is whether I need to use the dovecot imap sharing namespace in order to safely share imap folders, or whether I can just use file system permissions as we have been using? My biggest concern is safe concurrent access to the shared folders, which I'm planning to implent with mbox files for now. thank you Tom Lieuallen Oregon State University College of Engineering

I built and install Dovecot 2.0Beta4 on my NetBSD/amd64-current system, and am seeing the user-owned imap processes busy-looping. In Dovecot 1.2.x (and 1.x and 0.x..) I force ionotify and ioloop to kqueue, so I suspected that was the problem. Turns out it's not: Using poll or none also causes the same problem. This did not happen in 1.2.8 (didn't try anything later than that). After a quick visit to gdb, I added some i_debug() statements in ioloop-kqueue.c (when I had that as the notify and loop method) which showed that the loop was in io_loop_handler_run() . I haven't done any similar debugging for the other ioloop methods, but a quick look at the 2.0 changelog for those files doesn't raise any immediate alarms. Any ideas what to look for here? Timo, any ideas? 1.2.x worked perfectly so it's something "new" in 2.0. ScottE

Hello, I may have missed a point, but I could have found an issue between plugins quota and lazy_expunge. I have noticed that the "lazy_expunge"d mails are counted as part of the quota, while the documentation says it should not be. I have first tried to find out if this was a configuration mistake somewhere. Notably, you can notice that the expunged mails are in directory ~/expunged while the usual mail is in ~/Maildir : expunged mails are not in a subdirectory of ~/Maildir (this was just to make sure there were no side effect with this). I have deleted some expunged mails to be sure : at its next cycle, the file ~/Maildir/maildirsize contained expected value. So yes, I do know expunged mails in the expunged directory are counted (size, number of mails). So I've taken a look at the source code, adding some i_info(...) at different places of the quota and lazy_expunge plugins. >From the source code reading session, I understand that : 1. In src/lazy-expunge/lazy-expunge-plugin.c 1.1. lazy_expunge_mail_storage_init() sets the expunged mails namespace flag with NAMESPACE_FLAG_NOQUOTA 1.2. lazy_expunge_mail_storage_init() is called by lazy_expunge_mail_storage_created() 1.3. lazy_expunge_mail_storage_created() is part of the callback list hook_mail_storage_create 2. In src/plugins/quota/quota-storage.c: 2.1. The only place in the whole dovecot source code where NAMESPACE_FLAG_NOQUOTA is checked is in function quota_mailbox_list_created() 3. In src/plugins/quota/quota-plugin.c: 3.1 quota_plugin_init() add quota_mailbox_list_created() to the callback list hook_mailbox_list_created. >From my observations : - Callback functions in quota_mailbox_list_created are called _before_ callback functions in hook_mail_storage_create. - This observation led me to move the piece of code that sets NAMESPACE_FLAG_NOQUOTA from lazy_expunge_mail_storage_init() to lazy_expunge_mail_storage_created(). - But there, lazy_expunge_mail_storage_created() is called after quota_mail_storage_created() because names of the library files are lib10_quota_plugin.so and lib02_lazy_expunge_plugin.so. - There I have also learnt that callback functions of the same list are called in the reverse order compared to the library filenames. So see if my observations were right, I have renamed lib10_quota_plugin.so to lib01_quota_plugin.so, then it worked. But I doubt this is the right way to fix it. This also reverses the order other callbacks between the two plugins are called, which migh not be expected at all. I'm not event sure moving some code from lazy_expunge_mail_storage_init() to lazy_expunge_mail_storage_created() was right : I've improvized the reading the source code and do not understand the whole logic, so I suppose this could break something else. Hi Timo... I made the plugin like you say. The header part is saved by dovecot, with o_stream_send , and the body with my function. This implementation, works fine. But i need to get / change some values to create the "link" from header to body. When a email is saved, have the S an W flags, that is the size of email. There is a way to increase this Flags ? I need to put one more line in the header, to have some link to body. To Increase the S Flag i increase the ostream.offset, but the W is based in the offset from istream, that's right ? There is a way to do this without rewrite the read function !? Exemple, when the email is moved from tmp to cur.

Hello. I need to know how I can get the final message file name inside a plugin like the zlib 2.0 plugin. I saw another threads about zlib plugin, but don't see no one asking about this. My interest is to use the message's file name in a specific function that will add some lines on it and, after that, calculate a md5 hash of the modified file. As the size flags will not correspond to the effective message size/vsize, then I could change the flags using the filename too, right? This is my first approach. But... There are another way to do this directly on message been received by the plugin, like pre-allocating the size/vsize flags? I cannot simply to pass the extra text directly on the message being received because I need to do some extra validations over the full content of the message before add my data on the message. [Dovecot] corrupted transaction log errors causing users mail to disappear temporarily

So Ive been looking into some problems with users reporting their mail goes missing for a second but then re-apears very soon after. I have tracked it down to happening at the same time these appear in the logs. Seems the transaction logs is getting corrupted somehow and then rebuilding itself (which works fine). The problem is while its re-builing the users think all of their mail is gone. I tried to set mail_uid in dovecot-sql.conf in user_query as follows: user_query = SELECT maildir as mail, 51 as userdb_uid, 51 as userdb_gid, 51 as mail_uid FROM dovecot_email_maps WHERE email = '%u' But this apparently doesn't provide that mail_uid as I expected. Hi, I'm using RoundCube and I asked RC team to add ACL support, but there is a problem with renaming ACL protected folders. Users don't have permissions to deleting/renaming some folders. [Dovecot] mixture of virtual and plain users

Hi, I have a mail server (postfix/dovecot) running so far with normal local /etc/passwd users for domain example.com. mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir passdb pam { } userdb passwd { } Is it possible to add virtual domains/users to my setup without changing example.com to a virtual domain? I can do the postfix part with http://www.postfix.org/VIRTUAL_README.html#virtual_mailbox but I'm not sure if I can mix dovecot (IMAP and maybe smtp auth) for both local and virtual users. Any hint would be appreciated. best regards, Giannis

OS: AIX 5.3 with IBM c compiler. Dovecot revision: 11278:2ead7574bb08 This problem is old for me, I just kept forgetting to report. Trying to start dovecot and I get: exec(): 0509-036 Cannot load program dovecot because of the following errors: rtld: 0712-001 Symbol iconv was referenced from module /usr/local/dovecot2.0beta5/lib/dovecot/libdovecot.so(), but a runtime definition of the symbol was not found. rtld: 0712-001 Symbol iconv_open was referenced from module /usr/local/dovecot2.0beta5/lib/dovecot/libdovecot.so(), but a runtime definition of the symbol was not found. rtld: 0712-001 Symbol iconv_close was referenced from module /usr/local/dovecot2.0beta5/lib/dovecot/libdovecot.so(), but a runtime definition of the symbol was not found.
