Hello everyone..... I Made some tests in zlib plugin, and in ostream file (ostream-zlib.c) in o_stream_zlib_sendv function, have it: stream->ostream.offset += bytes; In struct mail_save_context, have saved_physical_size and it can be updated, acording with the observation. /* if non-zero, overrides the physical size that should be saved. for example when using zlib plugin, this would contain the mail's uncompressed size. */ uoff_t saved_physical_size; in file zlib-plugin.c in zlib_mail_save_compress_finish function, have it: ctx->saved_physical_size = ctx->output->offset; It's a update to offset (the size of email) in zlib, but if you update this value with a new number, the W flag in email is NOT updated. This is the original file, without update the or increase offset. 1273155226.M512158P16310.brc,S=435,W=390:2,S This is the file updated with 5000b more. 1273155226.M512158P16310.brc,S=5435,W=390:2,S The S is updated, but W not. OK, this not matter in zlib plugin, because the physical size is the email uncompressed, but if you use the zlib as example, and you use this value (saved_physical_size) to update your saved email size, it can't update the W flag, and the email will not be open, because the W size is wrong.

[Dovecot] A few questions on shared folders

I'm looking at the possibility of using shared folders to solve a particular problem for my employer and I have a few questions: 1) Can shared folders be in mbox format while allowing the user's mail to be in maildir format? (I think the answer is yes, but wanted to check). 2) What version of dovecot should I be running in order to support shared folders? 3) Is there a good overview document that people could recommend I read that describes how best to set up shared folders under dovecot (and perhaps also gives an overview of shared folder usage in IMAP mail clients in general)? [Dovecot] STARTTLS does not seem to work

I believe I have the configuration set to use START TLS on IMAP4 (143) and POP3 (110) ports. However, it does not seem to be working. Yet "STARTTLS" is listed as a capability (which tells me I probably do have it configured right). In the session below, 172.30.0.24 is the mail server I'm putting up. 64.26.60.229 is an outside mail service. A similar thing happens on POP3. The always-SSL/TLS ports (993 and 995) are working. Hi all, ok, I couldn't quite find this in any of the documentation, so I figured I would ask here. In preparation to move to version 2.0 to take advantage of the mutiple IP and SSL cert options that are coming, it would be really nice to be able to include other config files in the main config file, so that I don't have to edit the main config in order to add new IP addresses or certs... Does dovecot currently have the ability to include another config file when it is parsing the main config??? If not, is that something that we can put on the wish list? Thanks, Tim.

I have quota with userdb sql override. When i overpass 100M deliver reject the message. I have 200M in sql. Deliver don't query the database. hi everyone i have a question i have dovecot 2.0 and postfix with virtual users with mysql all is working fine but when i read mail from outlook or pop and then read the mail from webmail the quota is not the same i mean they calculate wrong and i have to erase the maildirsize file and force to recalculate, what can i do, thanks

Hi i tested acls with some clients horde/imp mulberry thunderbird squirrelmail kmail and i couldnt get it run proberly i have no problems testing setacl etc with plain telnet session, and i have no error in verbose logging but it looks like acl is only working partly with some clients so show acls is working mostly but setting only partly horde/imp and mulberry dont show any acls any idea? -- Best Regards MfG Robert Schetterer Germany/Munich/Bavaria

Hi All! Just noticed a strange behavior of the FS quota plugin on delivery stage. We use group FS quotas via NFS. The first delivery is without error, but the INBOX is corrupted(last msg is clipped) but quota-tool show only 3300 blocks used (quota is 10240 blocks). - 2. Following delivery big msgs (over quoted) ends with an error: "Not enough disk space" (this is correct, because the quota is really ended) - 3. Following delivery small msgs (above quoted) ends well, msgs are delivered (used 3304 blocks and etc.) Our setup: -- slackware 11.0, x86_32 -- linux 2.6.31.6 -- dovecot 1.2.11 -- mailbox(not maildir) via NFS storage. hi, i red several hours a lot of documentation (wiki, Blogs, lists ...) how to get public folders. Under cyrus it is very easy. Create a mbox on the top with cyradm and some acls. Nothing more ... All i want is: public/info public/group/internal public/foo public/foo/bla on info, everybody can read on group/internal - only group has full access to internal public/foo/bla - read write for everyone The flags (seen, ...) is stored for all. I'd like to have a variable substitute take the domain name part, lower case it, MD5 it, and take a 2-character substring of that. Would that be like %2MLd ? The documentation on the H hash modifier described reversing with R, but expresses it at %3RHu which seems to me like it would be reversing the hash result rather than the user string. I'm undecided about MD5 vs. hash, and could go either way. But I was thinking: mail_location = /data/mail/%2MLd/%Ld/%2MLn/%Ln

Hi I'am using dovecot with quota_rule stored in mysql user table, and quota usage stored in mysql dict ###### Quota ############# dict { quotadict = mysql:/usr/local/etc/dovecot-quota.conf } plugin { quota = dict:user::proxy::quotadict quota_rule2 = Trash:storage=10%% quota_rule3 = Sent:ignore #quota_rule = *:storage=10M } ################################### Everything works as expected, but I have some inconveniences for domains with large number of mailboxes. Allocating and maintain quota to every account it's a hard job. I just want to implement some flexibility for this situations (ex the first enforcement to be the user quota and the second to be the domain quota). Is there a way to implement such thing in dovecot and what are the adjustments that I need to do. Regards Alex

The few things that should still be done: - Change expire-tool to be a plugin for doveadm expunge command - doveadm mailbox * commands should use UTF-8 for mailbox names, not mUTF-7 (and add -7, -8 parameters to switch between them) - THREAD command seems to be crashing - some other bugfixes Some of the changes since beta4: - default_login_user is now "dovenull". You should create this user. - imap, pop3 -u <user> now does userdb lookup + changes privileges if necessary, so it's much easier to start imap/pop3 session for a specific user from command line - doveadm has all kinds of new commands and changes - PostgreSQL supports now multiple connections to backend. Also supports load-balancing / HA by specifying multiple host parameters. MySQL and PostgreSQL now share the same code for that. - probably lots of other things I can't think of right now. h

I use dovecot, vpopmail. I wish to restrict a mail user's login to its mailbox according to its ip address. I don't wish other users to be affected . Namely, for instance, abc(a)domain.com can login to its mailbox from a few specific ip addresses but the same user will not able to login from anywhere. Meanwhile normally other mail users can login to their mailboxes from all ip addresses. How can I do that with dovecot acl ? any advice.

hello, dovecot2 implements "!include conf.d/*.conf" to build the configuration from multiple configfiles. So the settings for pop3, imap or lmtp may stay in different files. unfortunately the "protocol = " does not allow a += logic to enables or disable inet listeners. I would not have expected this upon implementing sieve. And I really need to get around this limitation. LDA has no problem writing to these large mbox files. Why does sieve have a problem with them? [Dovecot] List shared folders

Good morning! I run an imap-only Ubuntu 8.04 mail server with dovecot 1.2 and pam_ldap, so all my users are posix users. No virtual user or domain, no sql so far. I am setting up shared folders with "namespace shared". I got no errors upon restarting the service, but I get no shared folders listing. As per the wiki http://wiki.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes/Shared I can use a bdb file or sql connection to keep the listing. But when I use a single bdb file like: plugin { acl_shared_dict = file:/var/lib/dovecot/shared-mailboxes.db } everytime a user logs in, this file get its ownership to the user with 0600 mode. I could use an sql dictionary, but since I dont have any sql params on my configs I am not sure where to store connection params like user, password and host for database. Can anybody help me with that? My goal is to allow my users to shared selected folders with other users, hope to be in the right path. Thanks and regards. -- Marcio Merlone

Hi guys, I just suscribed cause I'm trying to do something which I'm not sure how. I need to prevent some accounts from deleting there emails. >From what I've seen [0] this could be achieved by using ACL. My first question is, is this right? Is there a way to achieve the same using POP3? I tried setting up ACL using the info at the Wiki [1], but it's not working. Hi, After many hours of testing, I've finally tracked down the issue I have been having with dovecot's SSL support. The problem is that the SSL certs result in "TLS handshaking: SSL_accept() syscall failed: Connection reset by peer" errors *if the certificate granted is not granted for client use*. For servers, I normally generate SSL certificates specifically for servers: [ server_ca_extensions ] basicConstraints = CA:false keyUsage = keyEncipherment extendedKeyUsage = 1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.1 If you just do that, then the SSL certificate doesn't work in dovecot (it will work fine in Apache, or Postfix etc etc). You also need the certificate to be valide for client side work: [ client_and_server_ca_extensions ] basicConstraints = CA:false keyUsage = digitalSignature, keyEncipherment extendedKeyUsage = 1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.2, 1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.1 I believe this is a fault with Dovecot. This is with the Debian package for Dovecot 1.2.11 (Version: 1:1.2.11-1). The default self-signed certificate the Debian post-install script generates pops out a certificate that is valid for everything, which is why it works by default out of the box. Matthew

I would have hoped some comments in the example config file would have mentioned this and suggested a default practice solution. Is this something few people or many people encounter (among those using dovecot/deliver from Postfix)? If I do as the wiki describes and make separate log files for dovecot/deliver to use, do I just make them owned by Postfix? It would seem to me a different directory might be more helpful (absent log files could be created by having the directory permissions. I'm also thinking in terms of log rotations, too ... and I prefer to do log rotations by date stamping rather than pushing sequence numbers (the legacy log rotation). Any chance there are %-style variables I can use in log file/path names to make log files automatically named by the date (and maybe time) ... kind of like in a shell script I would do: `date +/path/to/tree/%Y/%m/%d.log` or such.

I've Google'd to exhaustion and can't seem to find an answer to my problem. I'm not sure if the problem is TBird 3 or my Dovecot setup. The basic problem is that when I launch TBird and it grabs messages upon startup, it takes forever to supposedly pull them down. Once it's got them they sort relatively quickly into the proper IMAP (dovecot) folders. I don't use sieve yet; I sort with TBird rules. I don't sync messages for offline use. The only thing TB stores locally is the index cache, which I deleted and had TB rebuild once, which didn't help. All that did was waste more time, as I've got 40,000 messages in my IMAP folders which had to be re-indexed by TB. (I save all list mail for future searching). As an example of this problem, I'd not checked my email for just over day, had ~300 messages waiting in /var/mail/stan. TBird starts pulling them from dovecot and says in the status bar "downloading x of ~300". As I watch the count tick up +10 at a whack, the TB process is pegged at 100%, there is zero network activity, and the imap process on the server shows zero cpu use. It took over 60 seconds to "pull" the messages, after which TB sorted them. During the apparent sorting process, there is quite a bit of network activity and the imap process on the server is relatively busy. I say "pull" in quotes because the entire time TB is saying it's pulling more messages there is no network activity. The client and server are plugged into the same 100BaseT FDX switch (FDX verified), and the server has zero load. I know TBird isn't the greatest IMAP client around, but I think taking over 60 seconds just to download ~300 messages is way too damn long given the hardware resources, network, and load on the client and server machines. TB basically seems to be pulling, or dovecot serving, only about 5 messages/sec over 100Mb ethernet, which is abysmal performance given neither the server nor client have any load. The messages are mostly list mail which are at max a few kilobytes each. I'm leaning toward a problem with TBird but I've been unable to find a bug report that covers this, nor a forum post anywhere, etc. The closest I've found for "slow startup" are recommendations to compact folders. I have no local folders to compact. I delete immediately and expunge on exit. Anyone have any ideas? Other than switching to LDA+sieve and have TB check the IMAP folders for new mail? -- Stan

I'm currently trying to configure a linux mailserver running centos to use an xserve running snow leopard. I am configuring the mailserver to run dovecot,sendmail,clamav,spam assassin and squirrelmail so it matches those used by the mac. The problem I am having is that I cannot get the server to authenticate properly to the macs LDAP database. As far as I can tell it is either a problem authenticating passwords or username and passwords. mail.app says its the password it cant authenticate Thunderbird says it could be either. It seems to be a problem in dovecot-ldap.conf, (as I can run ldapsearch from the linux server authenticate correctly and gain user information) What I'd like to know is there a standard set of settings required to authenticate to the LDAP on the mac? I'm currently running the od with no requirements for Kerberos, SSL or anything else it can authenticate with plain passwords (it will be once it is implemented I'm trying to have as few variables as possible at the moment). Hi list! I am trying to get dovecot to authenticate users against Novell eDirectory via LDAP. I have successfully gotten open-xchange to authenticate, and I have written a PHP module that authenticates, however I cannot seem to get Dovecot working. Hi together, i am currently using dovecot 1.2.10 with the sieve-plugin and use a sieve-filter to sort the SPAM-Mail's directly into a Junk-Folder: require "fileinto"; # rule:[junkfilter] if header :contains "X-Spam-Flag" "YES" { fileinto "Junk"; } My problem is now, if i try to retrieve the Mails via POP3, i did not get the SPAM-Mail's in the Junk-Folder, only the normal ones, that are not filtered over the sieve plugin. hi, we have IMAP and SMTP (sendmail(solaris)) on different hosts. Sendmail delivers Mails via LMTP to Cyrus and Cyrus puts the mails into the (hopefully) right box. Now I want to replace the Cyrus host with Dovecot. I've searched a bit in Google but there isn't much about LMTP via TCP in combination with DoveCot. Version 2 seems to be get the feature, but we have round about 5k users, so beta is no choice. Also I red something about maidag (mailutils from Gnu) that could do the Job, but maybe there is a better way. I do not want to install Postfix (or any other SMTP service) on that IMAP Server. So I'm asking is there anybody who has the same construct. Important is, that Quota full etc. messages (RFC) gets back to sendmail, so that the MTA reject the mails, before accepting. cu denny

I am looking through the logging options and wondering if there are a couple of things that we can do 1. Logouts don't seem to show the IP address of the logout, we typically see multiple sessions at a time and wondering if there is a way to tie the logouts to an IP 2. POP logouts show the number of messages retrieved/deleted but I don't see a way to do this with IMAP, is there a logout option for this with imap? Thanks

I'm looking for an IMAP testing tool, suitable to use with Dovecot IMAP. It needs to support TLS, STARTTLS, and login/authentication. It needs to be able run from command line, shell scripts, and even do so under cron jobs (e.g. a way to supply the password to use w/o a terminal prompt). Typical interactive mail clients just don't cut it (even the text mode ones). One reason is I need to do the tests on a number of machines, under a number of user and domain names, and with a variety of parameters or destinations. This is for a suite of regression tests I am putting together intended to verify that configuration changes do not break things (or unbreak things that are supposed to not work). Anyone ever heard of such a tool? Open source would be preferred (better yet, my favorite programming languages: C, Pike, Python).

hello, yesterday I tried to package dovecot-2.0beta5 + pigeonhole from Mercurial repository. I put pigeonhole as a subdir in the dovecot sourcetree. Following http://hg.rename-it.nl/dovecot-2.0-pigeonhole/raw-file/tip/INSTALL I called ./autogen.sh; ./configure --with-dovecot=..; make In the buildprocess I saw this output ( from autogen.sh ): Putting files in AC_CONFIG_AUX_DIR, `..'. libtoolize: `config.guess' exists: use `--force' to overwrite libtoolize: `config.sub' exists: use `--force' to overwrite libtoolize: `ltmain.sh' exists: use `--force' to overwrite I dont know *why* AC_CONFIG_AUX_DIR is .. but in .. there are the mentioned files (from dovecot) already present. Dovecot's transactions often write-lock dovecot.index.log twice (without unlocking in between), and then unlock it twice. Is that intended, or is that a bug? If I read the man pages correctly, double write-locking is pointless but safe. But double unlocking could cause data corruption during the period between the first and second unlocks, because the locks don't nest (are not refcounted). The first unlock leaves the file totally unlocked. Could this be the source of some index corruption errors? For example: 1. Process A acquires a F_WRLCK on a file. 2. Through a different code path, process A again acquires a F_WRLCK on the same file. Since these locks don't nest this is essentially a no-op. 3. Process A modifies the file. 4. Process A unlocks the file to undo the lock in step 2. Now the file has no lock on it at all. 5a. Process B locks, modifies, and unlocks the file. 5b. Process A also modifies the file, thinking that it still has a write lock. 6. Process A unlocks the file to undo the lock in step 1, but this is another no-op. Data corruption is possible if steps 5a and 5b conflict, or if 5b uses stale data. Here is a code path in dovecot-1.2.11 which exhibits the above behavior. "Outer" write lock: maildir_transaction_save_commit_pre -> maildir_transaction_save_commit_pre_sync -> maildir_sync_index_begin -> mail_index_sync_begin -> mail_index_sync_begin_to -> mail_index_sync_begin_init -> mail_transaction_log_sync_lock -> mail_transaction_log_lock_head -> mail_transaction_log_file_lock -> mail_index_lock_fd -> file_wait_lock -> file_lock_do "Inner" write lock: maildir_transaction_save_commit_pre -> maildir_sync_index_finish -> mail_index_sync_commit -> mail_index_write -> mail_transaction_log_rotate -> mail_transaction_log_file_create -> mail_transaction_log_file_create2 -> mail_transaction_log_file_lock -> mail_index_lock_fd -> file_wait_lock -> file_lock_do The file being locked is the same, dovecot.index.log. In another case, maildir_sync_index_begin is reached this way (outer lock): mailbox_sync -> mailbox_sync_init -> maildir_storage_sync_init -> maildir_sync_context -> maildir_sync_index_begin -> mail_index_sync_begin -> etc. And maildir_sync_index_finish is reached this way (inner lock): mailbox_sync -> mailbox_sync_init -> maildir_storage_sync_init -> maildir_sync_context -> maildir_sync_index_finish -> etc. Could these lead to data corruption? I have added / merged the data in the Configuring Dovecot SASL but when testing we see nothing about AUTH when testing it. Please let me know if I have left something out I am not a complete NUBE but I am still a bit green. Thanks.

[Dovecot] %d is empty in mail_location

I have this in dovecot-postfix.conf: mail_location = maildir:/home/mail/dnamesum=%12MLd/dname=%Ld/unamesum=%12MLn/uname=%Ln/mail Yes, it is excessive, but that's just for testing. The pattern I really want is less clear for debugging. In postfix/main.cf I have: mailbox_command = /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver -c /etc/dovecot/dovecot-postfix.conf -a "${RECIPIENT}" I verified through strace that -a "${RECIPIENT}" is in fact getting a full user@domain address. The problem is that %d and %Ld are coming up as empty, and %12MLd is giving me the first 12 hex characters of an md5 of an empty content. It's losing the domain name somewhere. It's in the mail headers and in the -a option. So what else is needed?

[Dovecot] imap_acl for CentOS

Hi, I sent an email a couple of days ago asking about a problem with ACL. The bottom line was, I think, that I'm missing imap_acl plugin. I installed Dovecot 1.0.7 using yum in CentOS 5.4. Do you know where can I get the imap_acl plugin lib? Thanks A

[Dovecot] Setting up a 'rootless' server - user and auth_user cannot be the same

I am trying to follow http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/Rootless to set up a personal dovecot server that does not use 'root' and does not need to change uids/gids. I'm trying to set it up on a Cygwin personal system. The problem I'm running into though, the directions say to set "user" and "auth_user" to be the same in this setup. However when you do this, Dovecot compains and will refuse to start up. hi, dovecot from the debian lenny backports does not successfully accept incomming imap or imaps connections; when the client connect i can see the clients ip address in an imap-process but the client cannot succesfully connect and retries this several times where an new imap-process is bound until the maximum connections per client is reached; when the client is closed the imap-processes on the know there was a kernel bug prior 2.6.27 which also causes such a problem, but i have now the 2.6.32 running and still having this problem - no client connection could be established.... has anyone a I can also see Dovecot 2.0 builds in there. But they appear to be being made every couple hours, so presumably based on the bleeding edge of the Mercurial repository. Hello, I have recently begun using IMAP to access my mails, and have found that the size of my maildir is quickly getting larger than I had anticipated. Googling around, I've seen a lot of messages related to compressing individual messages in a maildir. However, what I'm really looking for is a solution which will allow multiple messages to be compressed into a single compressed file, while still allowing those messages to be accessed via IMAP. The reasoning behind this is that most of my incoming mail consists of many very-similar messages (for example, it is not unheard of for me to receive 10,000 emails detailing the same error report over a weekend, with the actual "needs to be processed" parts stuck on the end of each message) I'm expecting a simple "no, there's no way to do that", but I wouldn't mind being pleasantly surprised. My question again: Is there any way to keep a bundle of older mails compressed, so that they can enjoy the high compression of being very similar to each-other, while still allowing access via imap? A solution may involve (just throwing out ideas here, which I have no idea how to implement) putting messages older than N days into an MBox file, and either somehow linking my account to that file (so that my account consists of [compressed readonly Mbox]+[live uncompressed Maildir]), or perhaps the first half of that, but accessing archived messages through a separate account. (Not the preferred way, but if it's the only way, I'll do it) But really I don't even know if it's possible to have dovecot support MBox and Maildir simultaneously, nor do I know enough about the MBox format to even know if the IMAP-style "multiple mailboxes" thing is possible in MBox. Please excuse my no-doubt confused terminology and general air of doesn't-know-what-he's-talking-about. The internals of e-mail are generally not my thing, so I'd appreciate any pointing in the right direction which anyone may have to offer. Any ideas?

Can't get Thunderbird 2 to delete a folder under mdbox (Dovecot 2.0beta5) I have built Dovecot 2.0 and installed it under "/opt/dovecot2". I have done the minimum configurations necesary to get it to work with SSL, systems users but with a secondary password database, and set up mail location as "mdbox:~/dbox". I had to create the directory "dbox" in the user's home directory to get things working. Using Thunderbird 2, I can happily copy messages into this system and read them out again, and that all works. In the user's "~/dbox" directory, I get a "storage" directory and a file "m.1". I can also create folders, and nested folders, and put messages into those and read them out again, and that all works. If I try to delete a folder through Thunderbird 2, what happen is that the folder gets moved to be under a folder "Trash" (which Thunderbird calls "Deleted"). So if I had a folder "foo" and deleted it, I end up with a folder "Trash/foo" (which Thunderbird calls "Deleted/foo"). Fair enough: Thunderbird is doing a trash can model on folders. I then go to remove the folder foo from "Trash". Thunderbird doesn't complain, and the folder disappears from the folder list. But upon re-starting Thunderbird, we see that the folder "foo" is still there under "Trash". So it seems the folder was never properly deleted. Perhaps this is a bug in Thunderbird 2, but since this is a beta Dovecot with a new storage subsystem, I thought I would suggest that it might be an issue with Dovecot 2.0beta5. Regards, Bill

Hi all, I am trying to set up shared folders with dovecot 1.2.10-0xk1 on a ubuntu 8.04 server and so far so good. I managed to share a folder using GOSa GUI, but I cannot list it on Thunderbird yet, because of acl_shared_dict param (I guess). I tried BDB as per the wiki: plugin { acl_shared_dict = file:/var/lib/dovecot/shared-mailboxes.db } I gave shared-mailboxes.db 0666 perms but it keeps resetting permissions to 0600, which gives me "open(/var/lib/dovecot/shared-mailboxes.db) failed: Permission denied" errors. I have a server with directly attached storage, 8 gigs of ram, about 500 gigs of data. I am ok with losing and having to rebuild the indexes on a reboot as the last uptime was over 200 days

Everything went ok and only have a few small problems, but the one to bring up is that some users cant see their new emails. The server receives the emails and puts them in their folder, but the client cant see them. Hello, I have a new installation of Ubuntu 10.04 64bit and all packages are from the Ubuntu repos. dovecot version 1.2.9 My goal is to have a basic email server setup with imap and pop support so imap users can send and receive email for the company. Setup: I have a few users that will be using this mail server so I do not need anything advanced and I am ok with creating a user account with a password and managing email addresses manually. I currently have system accounts for a test user and I have setup virtual mailbox as this mail server will host 2+ domains. Postfix is installed and running, I also confirmed mail flow to this box and from this box is working to the test user created. I can log in with the test username of the system and this is the point at which I have some issues as I am having a permission problem which I think is related to dovecot. What I am not able to do is download emails via imap client, but I can send emails just fine. If I change the permissions of the virtual mailbox to the test user that is logged in to chmod 777 I can download emails, but I can't do this for each new email to that users mailbox. /var/vmail/DOMAIN/USER1/cur/ and anything listed here will be owned by vmail so no other user can read it. (can't download emails) as dovecot seems to be trying to use USER1 as a user to read the files. How can I have dovecot read emails as vmail no matter what user logs in? I have tried many config changes using vmail but its failed so I need some advise. I need to setup a postfix+dovecot server for a multilocation setup The rules are very simple mails to *(a)local.example.com send to dovecot mails to *(a)otherlocation.example.com send to smtp:[otherlocation] But the users are created on dovecot as user(a)example.com. How can I configure dovecot to accept mails for *(a)local.example.com and deliver to *(a)example.com I use lmtp_generic_maps for a similar thing in postfix+cyrus Thanks Derwyn.

[Dovecot] CRYPT scheme and 8 character limit

I've decided that having users supply cleartext passwords for me to encrypt and encode is a bad idea, anyway. So maybe I won't need dovecotpw. The idea is that users supply an already-encrypted password. Most of the users can fetch their login password from /etc/shadow on their own computer. Wiki page http://wiki.dovecot.org/Authentication/PasswordSchemes indicates that scheme name CRYPT is the one that uses the libc crypt() function. But it also says it uses no more than 8 characters. Then there is MD5-CRYPT. But that doesn't call crypt(), I presume. No limit on password size is indicated. But this at least looks like SOME of the encrypted passwords I have. Other passwords I have have ids indicating SHA-256 and SHA-512. Here is an example from /etc/shadow that encrypted the clear password "dovecotandpostfix" (in case it is necessary to test it): $6$IwZzpjjj$p1VrkxQmgmTED8iQnQrV3sVEZpBmw2N8oD1ykOguXB5tf8aahICesX0TF6.VMThIW2QFs1buHjT3eDtnaAFhF1 The big question is, what scheme name should I use for these passwords? I can, of course, consider the id (6 in the above example, suggesting SHA-512) if there is one (so far all are like this). But the other consideration is most of the passwords are longer than 8, some longer than 12, characters. So apparently CRYPT can't be used in those cases (so I can't have the automatic identification of crypt() to detect the scheme). What scheme would I use for the various passwords? What scheme would be used for the above example for starters? What if the id is 5 or 1 (the ones documented for the crypt() call)?

I'm trying to use an external program to set the location of user's maildirs to match an existing hashing schema but the docs for how to do this in 1.x do not seem to apply to 2.0 or I'm misinterpreting them. protocol imap { mail_executable = /opt/dovecot-test/sonic-imap ... This correctly executes the and attempts to sets the MAIL variable but it appears that mail_executable is run before the user is logged in so the $USER variable isn't set and the process' uid is still 0. We also need to have dovecot include an additional maildir for each user that is currently stored outside of the user's main maildir directory into the same namespace as a specific folder name. Is there a way to do this in dovecot directly or will it need to be hacked (as it is currently with courier) or could it be done with a plugin? I've also noticed that while doveconf complains about mail_executable: May 3 13:44:10 a dovecot: config: Obsolete setting in /opt/dovecot-test/etc/dovecot/conf.d/imap.conf:7: mail_executable has been replaced by service { executable } However, when replaced as suggested by doveconf: protocol_imap { executable = /opt/dovecot-test/sonic-imap ... Getting the followng error when managesieve is enabled. Any other post I've read says this problem is because the service hasn't restarted after upgrade. I have just recently begun learning how to use sieve. For the most part, it works fine. The problem is that I have created some rather complicated rules. Occasionally, an e-mail will get sorted incorrectly and I am not able to easily determine what rule caused it to occur. Now I have two questions: 1) http://wiki.dovecot.org/ACL states: "Mailboxes in public namespaces don't have owners, so by default no-one can access them." The same document, when explaining the meaning of the k flag in the ACLs, states: "Mailboxes can be created (or renamed) under this mailbox (there is no recursion, so creating a mailbox under this mailbox's child uses only the child's ACLs)" I have placed an ACL (dovecot-ACL) at the root of the public namespace (all rights to anyone). The public namespace was appearing correctly in my IMAP client. Then I have copied a large folder with hundreds of nested subfolders (nesting level > 3) from another account to the root of the public namespace. According to the documentation mentioned above, this should not have been possible (if I got the docs right): The first nesting level of folder should have been created, but not the messages in them and for sure not the deeper nested folders. There is no dovecot-acl within a single of the first level folders (I have verified this), so no one should have access to them. Nevertheless, in addition to the succesful copy, I can see every folder and every message in my IMAP client, I can delete and so on. Could some please explain if I got the docs wrong? 2) If there really is no ACL recursion, how are we supposed to copy large folder structures (perhaps thousands of folders, nested to 5 levels deep) to a public namespace? Do we need to create all folders by hand, then place the dovecot-acl in each folder, and then copy the messages to each folder by hand? Do we need to switch to global ACLs so that we can establish a master user for doing the act of filling the public space? Or is there a dovecot module which, immediately after creating a folder, looks into the parent folder of the new folder and copies the dovecot-acl from the parent folder to the new folder? [Dovecot] during change sql password on squirrelmail

Hello I use squirrelmail1.4.20, compatible2, change_sql plugin, dovecot, postfix, mysql,virtualuser. I can change my email password successfully on squirrelmail. When I change my password the squirrelmail throw me a page which contains an error as followings; "This page request could not be verified and appears to have expired." how can I correct this issue?
