[Dovecot] Courier to dovecot migrations

Dear All, I saw some topics discussed in forums about this, but none with my problems :( Currently we have a mailserver postfix with courier-imap-4.1.1, and courier-pop3 and courier-authlib. Our Maildir's are written in the users home directory (ex: ~/Maildir) I'm now migrating the mailserver to other cluster and installing with dovecot. [Dovecot] public folders grayed out

Hi folks, I have configured a public folder as described on the Wiki (more or less; see below), but in TB3 I see the "Public" folder grayed out. I cannot subscribe. Toggling the subscriptions flag doesn't help. What did I miss here? Any helpful comment would be highly appreciated. If this is a TB3 problem: Which MUA would you suggest? [Dovecot] Fatal: open() failed for /var/run/dovecot/login: Permission denied

I keep getting this message when I try to start dovecot using the -F option. Fatal: open() failed for /var/run/dovecot/login: Permission denied Checking /var/run/dovecot/login folder permissions does not seem to indicate anything wrong as root has all the permissions it needs. If I am not mistaken, dovecot can run as root while in the login directory correct? When I try to start the dovecot service, it fails with the message: dovecot dead but subsys locked. Can anybody help me resolve this issue? I am running RHEL5.4. Thanks in advance.

[Dovecot] Extra Imap processes

Hello fellow dovecot users! I have a question for you guys. I have a server running dovecot/exim and I allow both pop/pops and imap/imaps. When I look at the running processes, I see a lot of imap processes that look like the following: imap [user(a)domain.tld USER_IP] Sometimes, there are duplicates imap [user(a)domain.tld USER_IP] processes. I was wondering, how come those processes don't quit and stick around in the system? Should they quit after the user issued the disconnect command from its mail client? Also, is there any way to actually make them to quit or should I make a shell script that runs at a certain period of time and actually kill those processes? Thanks

I am having trouble starting up dovecot on my RHEL5 server. When starting the dovecot service, I get: dovecot dead but subsys locked Looking into the mail logs, I find: dovecot: Auth process died too early - shutting down dovecot: child 4165 (auth) returned error 127 Does anybody know how I can fix this? Looks like I'm pretty badly lagged behind emails in mailing list and in my INBOX. I should read and do something about maybe 150 messages. The good thing at least is that v2.0 is getting closer. Only 3 larger things left besides bug fixing: 1. config handling is too slow 2. I just noticed auth cache is only for passdb. it really should be changed to cache userdb too. 3. fts-solr should optionally use mailbox GUIDs instead of mailbox names And 2 and 3 are actually old problems..

[Dovecot] Bug in driver-mysql.c + fix

I tried to use MySQL stored procedures from dovecot: password_query = CALL user_pass_check('%n', '%d', '%w') user_query = CALL user_info('%n', '%d') This failed with the message: User query failed: PROCEDURE imap.user_info can't return a result set in the given context The root of this problem is that mysql_real_connect() needs to be called with option CLIENT_MULTI_RESULTS and mysql_next_result() called to retrieve extra results (that will not exist in the way that we use it). I attach a patch that fixes this problem -- the patch is against dovecot-1.2.10. This works for me ... but could probably do with testing by other people. BTW: I got the same problem with exim this morning, wrote a patch that has now been accepted. The dovecot patch is similar. I am looking to use mysql procedures, there are some interesting things that can be done. Two suggestions that I have will help with this: 1) There be variable (say) %o - this be the obscured password, ie what password_query returns. 2) that dovecot look for either ''password_query'' as above, or ''password_check''. password_check would NOT return a password, but would be given %o and determine itself if the password is correct. It would return the other values (user, userdb_home, ...) and auth_result that would encode success/retry/fail (0, 1, 2 - or maybe more structured [**]) and auth_reason some human readable reason. The ''nologin'' value encodes some of this. The motivation for this is that my stored procedure will record the number of successive login failures and lock the account after 3 of them. It would also be possible to do time based restrictions & the such. Also: by passing %o the password is not sent in plain to the database server - which will increase security. I will publish my stored procedures when done. [Dovecot] Plugin like zlib

Hi everyone. I rebuild a plugin, based on zlib plugin. The changes between this plugin and zlib, is the zlib stuffs is replaced by open, read, lseek, close. With "plain-text" files, its works ok. So, my file is encrypt, and the result from decrypt file is different from fread. Like zlib, i read from fread the size variable, but the value added in seek_offset and pos is the result from decrypt, and it can be dfferent from fread. Like zlib, my file size is different from email. In zlib the file is smaller than the email. In my file, the file is bigger than the email. OK, lets go to the problem now. when the email arrives in the new folder, by imap, the stat (read my file by "while (i_stream_emexis_read(stream) > 0)" like zlib) and the seek works fine....the email is readed and the final stat size is the decrypted size of my email (smaller than original file). When I receive the email, clicking in "Send/Receive", The read function is aborted because the size to read (like zlib) is negative. I put some debug in my plugin, and print some stuffs about the functions. [Dovecot] Sendmail / Dovecot Config

I'm trying to set up dovecot on a Fedora box for about 5 users, I have a raid 5 array that is used for home folders etc mounted on /home, and I've created a directory /home/mail, which I have used a sym link to map /var/mail to. I've created folders for each of the users with relevant permissions and edited the dovecote config with:- namespace private { separator = / prefix = "#dbox/" location = dbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u inbox = yes hidden = yes list = no # for v1.1+ } namespace private { separator = / prefix = location = dbox:/var/mail/%u/mail } I was hoping that this would create a inbox in the root of each users folder in the mail directory and a sub folder to hold any user created folders. This all seems to work as I can create folders, copy emails to them r-arrange the folders etc as I want via a mail client using imap on 143. My only problem is that I have also configured send mail as best as I know to listen on port 25 as an SMPT client but any emails sent to it to one of the email addresses are saved by sendmail to /var/spool/mail/username and not picked up by dovecot Thanks John

I got a case that I haven't been able to resolve. I hope somebody can give me some hints. One of our users is reporting emails disappearing in front of his eyes, (Right ... emails filters at the client side ....) Server does not have global sieve filter enabled (no file present), even though this configuration is present: sieve_global_path=/vmail/globalsieverc User does not have any sieve scripts enabled at the server side. Yes, I´ve read these doc. I was just considering if someone had any experience with Mogile in email environment. Well, actually I´m trying to figure out if one of those nosql systems can store and scale email systems (ie, mailboxes - instead of maildir). I know mysql is always quoted as an option and discussed sometimes in the list. I think it´s an unnecessary overhead and bottleneck. As brainstorm. How about Cassandra, Tokyo-Tirant, Redis, and so on. Have you ever worked or tested one of them at production or even testing environment ? What do you think ? [Dovecot] patch: allow proxy to lookup host by name

This patch allows the dovecot proxy processes to lookup the destination host by name instead of IP address. Tested agains 1.2.10, expected to work against 1.2.11. The patch is pretty straightforward, it's making it work within the restrictions of the login process that's more interesting. This page exists to discuss these. The Problem Proxying is done from the dovecot login processes, both pop3-login & imap-login call code in src/login-common/login-proxy.c to handle the proxying to the given host. If the host is not an IP address, name resolution must be done. Two options from dovecot's configuration: 1. Dovecot running with roots Dovecot is started as root and drops privileges later; this is the recommended way of running Dovecot. Set by the config option: login_chroot = yes. In this mode, the login process is chrooted to login_dir, from which the proposed patch adds name resolution. Resolution is done via dovecot's net_gethostbyname() function - a wrapper for getaddrinfo/gethostbyname depending on compile-time platform support. These functions need access to the name service switch configuration, then whatever dependencies are required to consult the host resolution databases stipulated. so, if the /etc/nsswitch.conf hosts entry is: hosts: dns files Then the system will need access to /etc/resolv.conf and the nss_dns libraries for "dns" lookup, and /etc/hosts for "files" lookup. The exact files will vary by platform/operating system, but these all need to be available in the chroot for the lookup to succeed. and, if dovecot.conf has: login_chroot = yes login_dir = /var/run/dovecot/login login_user = dovecotuser Then for the nsswitch.conf entry above, the following files need to be copied (not symbolically linked!) to the chroot. This example is for a 64-bit RHEL5 system, with 64-bit dovecot daemon. If name resolution is working outside dovecot, it may be a chroot issue. See LoginProcess on wiki, and login_dir& login_chroot in config. Clients will receive a much less descript general error message, for example with POP3: -ERR [IN-USE] Account is temporarily unavailable. Things to check 1. does name resolution work for normal users? the dovecot user? 2. are all the files required by the Name Service Switch's configuration available? Use a process tracing tool such as strace or truss against the pop3-login or imap-login processes to check. 3. are other security measures interfering? eg: 1. SELinux <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Security-Enhanced_Linux> (RedHat <http://www.redhat.com/rhel/> EL, CentOS, Oracle EL) 2. AppArmor <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AppArmor> (SuSE, Ubuntu?) 3. RBAC (Solaris, OpenSolaris <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Solaris>) Caveats This procedure allows the chroot'ed login to do something, which forms a security risk if the libraries in the chroot are exploitable. It will be up to the operator to ensure that the copy of the files in the chroot get updated whenver the copies in the real filesystem do. On systems where the chroot is on the same filesystem/partition that the original file copies are, hard links (again: no soft links!) could be used to accomplish this. 2. Dovecot running without roots (RootLess) Dovecot is started as whatever user/group is used to start the master daemon. See the discussion on Rootless <http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/Rootless> for reasons why this is not the recommended way of running Dovecot, which includes a discussion on how this is more likely to be less secure. In dovecot.conf, rootless is selected by setting: login_chroot = no In this mode, the login process will have access to the required Name Service Switch configuration files and their dependencies if the user that started dovecot did. No further configuration is required for the proxy process to lookup hostnames.

[Dovecot] Scalability plans: Abstract out filesystem and make it someone else's problem

This is something I figured out a few months ago, mainly because this one guy at work (hi, Stu) kept telling me my multi-master replication plan sucked and we should use some existing scalable database. (I guess it didn't go exactly like that, but that's the result anyway.) So, my current plan is based on a couple of observations: * Index files are really more like memory dumps. They're already in an optimal format for keeping them in memory, so they can be just mmap()ed and used. Doing some kind of translation to another format would just make it more complex and slower. * I can change all indexing and dbox code to not require any locks or overwriting files. I just need very few filesystem operations, primarily the ability to atomically append to a file. * Index and mail data is very different. Index data is accessed constantly and it must be very low latency or performance will be horrible. It practically should be in memory in local machine and there shouldn't normally be any network lookups when accessing it. * Mail data on the other hand is just written once and usually read maybe once or a couple of times. Caching mail data in memory probably doesn't help all that much. Latency isn't such a horrible issue as long as multiple mails can be fetched at once / in parallel, so there's only a single latency wait. So the high level plan is: 1. Change the index/cache/log file formats in a way that allows lockless writes. 2. Abstract out filesystem accessing in index and dbox code and implement a regular POSIX filesystem support. 3. Make lib-storage able to access mails in parallel and send multiple "get mail" requests in advance. (3.5. Implement async I/O filesystem backend.) 4. Implement a multi-master filesystem backend for index files. The idea would be that all servers accessing the same mailbox must be talking to each others via network and every time something is changed, push the change to other servers. This is actually very similar to my previous multi-master plan. One of the servers accessing the mailbox would still act as a master and handle conflict resolution and writing indexes to disk more or less often. 5. Implement filesystem backend for dbox and permanent index storage using some scalable distributed database, such as maybe Cassandra. This is the part I've thought the least about, but it's also the part I hope to (mostly) outsource to someone else. I'm not going to write a distributed database from scratch.. This actually should solve several issues: * Scalability, of course. It'll be as scalable as the distributed database being used to store mails. * NFS reliability! Even if you don't care about any of these alternative databases, this still solves NFS caching problems. You'd keep using the regular POSIX FS API (or async FS api) but with the in-memory index "cache", so only a single server is writing to mailbox indexes at the same time. * Shared mailboxes. The filesystem API is abstracted, so it should be possible to easily add another layer to handle accessing other users' mails from both local and remote servers. This should finally make it possible to easily support shared mailboxes with system users.

Hi, How do I disable the imap listener in dovecot 2.0-beta-3? I only want to enable the imaps listener. In previous dovecot versions I could specify: prototols = imaps But in dovecot 2.0 this is no longer possible (imap and imaps are now both enabled with "protocols = imap"). I already made ssl a requirement with: ssl = required This is in the global section. I commented out the imap listener in master.conf, but "dovecot -a" still shows the config for the imap listener, so I suppose it's default configuration. Can I explicitly tell dovecot to not open an imap listener, but only an imaps listener? Kind regards, Erik.

I've got postfix up and running quite nicely, but am having a few problems with Dovecot. Every time postfix tried to delivery a message to a virtual user using dovecot I get an error like the following in /var/log/mail.log: Mar 8 21:53:58 rhy postfix/pipe[6616]: 89C94846E: to=<gregf(a)gregsfamily.com>, orig_to=<greg(a)gregsfamily.com>, relay=dovecot, delay=8795, delays=8794/0.01/0/0.61, dsn=4.3.0, status=deferred (temporary failure) At the same instant, in my dovecot log I'll get this error: deliver(gregf(a)gregsfamily.com): 2010-03-08 21:53:58 Error: Can't connect to auth server at /var/run/dovecot/auth-master: Connection refused So, I'm guessing that this is a permissions issue (somewhere) and that the dovecot process is not able to create the file /var/run/dovecot/auth-master. [Dovecot] Using MySQL For Mailboxes?

I have always seen some people indicate they use MySQL for mailboxes in Postfix and I wondered how difficult something like this would be? I have 300 users on my company Postfix server right now. I am just using Postfix, Dovecot (IMAP4 only), & Roundcube (Webmail). I have MySQL loaded on the machine that runs Postfix but only to manage the database for Roundcube. Do you think that 300+ users is recommended for a MySQL database for mailboxes? Secondly, how difficult is it to configure this? Right now everyone user has a home directory and a mailbox in their private home folder. Is it hard to configure Postfix & Dovecot to use MySQL mailboxes? Just looking for some suggestions since I couldn't find a log of info via Google. *PS* I was told that Dovecot doesn't support MySQL mailboxes. I think it does. Probably I'm doing something stupidly wrong. I have dovecot 1.2.7 and sieve 0.1.13. I have a sieve script starting with # <some comment> require ["vacation", "date", "relational"]; I get main_script: line 2: error: require command: unknown Sieve capability 'date'. Just to make sure I haven't messed up the dovecot package: $ strings /usr/pkg/lib/dovecot/lda/lib90_sieve_plugin.a | fgrep date_extension date_extension date_extension date_extension date_extension date_extension What's going on? It's probably some totally stupid typo on my side.

Hello, i use working quotasystem with sql-quotadict. The values stored in db are used to realize also a quotasystem in postfix to reject mails if they are bigger then remaining quota. if dataset in quotadict is missing for some reasons, postfix can't calculate quota and mail gets delivered even if user is already over quota. I am looking for a way to force dovecot/lda to recalculate users bytes/messages with command xy and not to wait for incomming mail. Currently i use: deliver -d $user -n -m folderwithunspeakablenamesonobodyusesthis and send a small message which gets lost but starts the calculation. This works but seems not to be the finest way. Is there a better way or my current procedure acceptable? Thanks, Andre

[Dovecot] Saving Sent Messages to Sent Folder

Hi Timo, There was another thread (it has come up at least a few times in the past few years I've been lurking) on the postfix list about having some kind of automatic 'Save to Sent' option to avoid the users mail client from having to upload messages twice (obviously the only ones of concern are ones with large attachments) - once to send it, and once to save the copy in the sent folder. I know and understand that doing this is not generally the job of the MTA, but hopefully most people can at least admit that there would be a (potentially huge, in the case of any large company that deals with a lot of large attachments in their email) savings in bandwidth (and user frustration) if a way could be found to do this reliably and at little to no 'cost' in terms of CPU/Disk IO, so I have a question about how this might be done... Given: Postfix can be configured to use the Dovecot LDA for delivering mail incoming. My question is simply, why wouldn't it be possible to create a Dovecot LSA ('submission agent'), that could be defined in postfix's master.cf file, which could then be configured to a) pipe the message to postfix, and b) if message is successfully sent, save a copy to the users Sent folder? Obviously, there would be some caveats - ie, postfix and dovecot would both have to be running on the same box (or at a minimum on the same local network)... Anyway, this is just something that really bugs me (and has for many, many years) every time I send a message with a large attachment, and have to watch it slowly process the message sending it, then again to save it to the Sent folder, so Ijust wanted to get your take on if this is even remotely feasible... -- Best regards, Charles

I'm trying to kickstart 2.0b3 on my NetBSD system (where 1.2.x works great!), and keep hitting: Fatal: service(tcpwrap) access(/software/dovecot-2.0beta3/libexec/dovecot/tcpwrap) failed: No such file or directory Indeed, that file doesn't exist...but I don't have nor want libwrap. It appears that doveconf includes tcpwrap... service tcpwrap { chroot = client_limit = 1 drop_priv_before_exec = no executable = tcpwrap extra_groups = group = privileged_group = process_limit = 0 process_min_avail = 0 protocol = service_count = 0 type = user = $default_internal_user vsz_limit = 4294967295 } ...but nothing else seems to. Running configure with --without-libwrap doesn't make any difference (configure doesn't find libwrap anyway). What am I missing here? How can I use dovecot 2.0 w/tcp wrappers? ScottE

Hi, This is my first mail, fyi. I dont know internals of the plugin but it depends more on Solr than Dovecot. Also the activity level and "real-timeness" of the index is important. Assuming this as the search only machine and relatively moderate usage, a big box with lots of RAM and 4-way server may work in your case. Lee

Dear all. (I'm new to the list.) Our regional government is considering, due to our proposal, migrate from Courier to Dovecot. 70k mailboxes. One of the most attractive features for them is the usage of indexes, and especially Solr FTS plugin. Their question is: How many users (range of users) could support one Solr instance used as index and search backend? Are there any deployment examples? I think, it would be easy to split users into different Solr instances, but it's not that easy to reorganize them, as we have to reindex if one user is moved from one instance to another. Regards. Hello.... Someone know ho work the istream-concat ? I made a copy of istream-concat, and use to manipulate my encrypted body. But i got some questions about the stream->pos, stream->skip and position of the message and pointer to buffer. My messages have the W= with the email size decrypted, and it is a little lass that the email size crypto. For exemple: I have a email with 6000k in crypto and decrypto the size is 5985 k: The buffer from istream-concat is 4096, i read 4096 from get_stream_data, but the result of this read is minor , lets say 4080, but the next read must be from 4096. The "send to client" must be 4080, to send the correctly data decrypted. My Question is, what the variable used in istream-concat, to send the data to client ? I need to update the stream->pos with my data length ?? I dont know if i made understand my question.....

I totally agree with the one of you who mentioned the online documentation and the wiki. I know that it exists and i used it for setting up my mail server, but ... as i said, i am old fashioned and i can better work with books. It's just a personal preferrence. Well, i also know that many developers are still working on dovecot, especially Timo and that always new features, configuration options and so on are added, but ... it's the same with other applications in the community (e.g. postfix, apache, OpenLDAP, samba ....) and for all those applications books are available, and that was the reason, why i asked for a book. And to be honest. When i go thru the documentation part, most of the documents were not changed for at least 6 months. I am sure that between the writing and the publishing of a book new dovecot features will be introduced and not covered in the book. But everyone working with books knows that they can't be up to date, but they are a real good basis for me to start with the fundamentals and then add this information by new data from the web. And guys just to mention one big advantage of a book is, you can read it offline easily!! But there is one thing i want to mention at this point. Even if you agree with me about having a book or not. What i really like is the discussion about and the chance to do so, because dovecot is opensource. And for me this is in the end the result behind the idea of open source. Everyone has the chance to contribute, either by code, by suggestions, by comments ..... And that for me is more important than to have a book or not. Thank you all for your comments. Hi, I'm not sure whether the client or the server is at fault (probably the client), but it's clearly a regression for me. I'm using the LCG Profimail (http://lonelycatgames.com/?app=profimail) application for my Symbian smartphone which has quite decent IMAP capabilities. Amongst others it can do IMAP IDLE (which has to be statically enabled in the server settings, so it's not used based on the server capabilities). After upgrading from 1.2.10 to 2.0b3 it does not connect anymore. Hello, Dovecot 1.2.5, centos 5.4. We are using NFS for mail, but indexes are local and on a ramdisk. However I'm getting logs such as: Mar 02 11:47:14 POP3(USERDELETED): Error: Timeout while waiting for lock for transaction log file /ramdisk/indexes/DOMAINDELETED/USERDELETED/.INBOX/dovecot.index.log Our NFS is rather busy, and we having other warnings to that affect, but wouldn't have though we'd get timeouts on a ramdisk. -- Andrew

[Dovecot] dovecot 1.1.6 and outloook express 6 out of sync

Apologies if this has been discussed before. I have dovecot 1.1.6 installed on my qnap NAS. I connect to the imap server using outlook express 6 on my XP sp3 box. I notice, after a time, that what I see in outlook express isn't what is actually on the imap server. For example, in one of my folders, many messages are missing. On another, headers of messages start getting duplicated and the bodies don't always match the headers. If I tell outlook express to clean up and reset... i.e. remove all the headers and bodies so they get downloaded again, then everything appears again... for a little while. Likewise, if I delete all the index files on the server and restart it, all seems well for a bit. Somehow, OE is getting out of sync with the imap server. This same OE client is also talking to other non-dovecot imap servers and I don't see this out-of-sync-ness or corruption at all. I realise this is a vaguely stated problem, but I'm not a imap person and dont yet know how to narrow it down further, nor can I reliably recreate it. Has anybody seen anything like this before? We've been struggling with a problem for the past couple of days which to this point I've only gotten to be able to boil down to this: 1. Install nessus home edition (less pluggins I assume) 2. run all scans (sequentially or in parallel, doesn't seem to matter) 3. about 3 minutes in /var/log/messages will show segfaults on imap and/or pop3 imap-login[22185]: segfault at 000000000000000c rip 0000003c7de610a2 rsp 00007fffa2342068 error 4 or sometimes... pop3-login[24451]: segfault at 000000000000000c rip 0000003c7de610a2 rsp 00007fff07116968 error 4 I'm having a really hard time getting a core dump and I'm having a really hard time narrowing down the list of nessus tests which cause this. So far, I have repeated this failure in 1.1.19 and 1.1.20 Additionally we've seen something similar on 1.2 and reverted back to 1.1 a year ago. At the time we could not re-produce a test case and finally gave up. Has anyone seen something along these lines? Can anyone recommend how I could narrow this down further so we can find the problem? [Dovecot] any limitations running on a Mac?

I have postfix/dovecot/mysql installed using MacPorts on a quad-core 2.8GHz MacPro running Snow Leopard (10.6.2). I moved the base mail directory to a pair of 10k RPM Raptors that are mirrored (/Volumes/email/) and everything seems to be working fine on an unused domain with very little traffic. I used imapsync to pull everything from the current mailserver to this test server to play with. Our current mailserver's IMAP performance *really* suffers when an IMAP folder exceeds ~500MB or ~5k messages. I've become very tired of being the mailbox police trying to get my 20 users to delete email or divide into smaller mailboxes. Are there folks on the list running postfix/dovecot on similar Mac hardware that can share their experiences? Specifically, are there any limitations (file descriptors, other?) that can impact performance I should be aware of? How does dovecot on the Mac deal with >500GB maildirs? Is there a recommended tool for loading and testing the server? Postal? I have 20 IMAP users, with a total of ~37GB of mail currently. [Dovecot] client cert handling not working properly on centos 4.8

Dear List I've successfully installed/configured dovecot 1.2.10 with "require client cert" on centos 5.4 and ubuntu server 9.10 I also need to install on centos 4.8 and after the following the exact same procedure I can only get it working if I commented out ssl_require_client_cert =yes and ssl_username_from_cert = yes from the working config file. This is even after compiling dovecot with openssl 0.9.8l on centos 4.8 If I copy the same "client_ca.crt" from centos 4.8 to centos 5.4 then centos 5.4 does not problem in verifying client cert. That file contain CRL as well as certificate which signs the pkcs12 file installed on the client. I noticed for some reason that I am missing an IMAP folder called 'Symantec' that was under my Inbox. I see all my other folders listed on my mail client except 'Symantec'. When I try and click on the Symantec folder as a sub folder in 'Drafts', I get an error: "The mail server responded:Mailbox doesn't exist: Drafts.Symantec" So why does it show up there and why can't I see it normally with all my other IMAP folders under my Inbox. Hi everyone..... I Build a plugin to concat my body and header splited.... Its have 2 "versions". One is with the body without modifications. The second, is with the body with crypto, and this crypto increase a little the size of email. So, without crypto, works fine, but with crypto i got stuck in some modifications. Because the email is splited, to handle it, i made a copy from istream-concat.c, and in i_stream_concat_read i made this changes. Every place that have the i_stream_get_data i get the index from concat (if is the frist or second stream) and if is the second, (my body) the unsigned char *data is the return from my function. if(cstream->cur_idx == 1){ data = decrypt_data(cstream->cur_input, &data_size); }else{ data = i_stream_get_data(cstream->cur_input, &data_size); } In this part, i get the function i_stream_get_data and put in the function too, to get the data in the same way, but i dont return the (_stream->buffer + _stream->skip;), i put this in a unsigned char * too, and work with this variable. The size_r, with the _stream->pos - _stream->skip, i update it, with the new value get from my total length from the decrypted buffer. In resume, every (inside istream_concat_read and istream_concat_read_next ) i_stream_get_data(cstream->cur_input, &data_size); // (in istream_concat_read is "pos" variable) I change to if(cstream->cur_idx == 1){ data = decrypt_data(cstream->cur_input, &data_size); //(in istream_concat_read is "pos" variable) }else{ data = i_stream_get_data(cstream->cur_input, &data_size); //(in istream_concat_read is "pos" variable) } Setting the unsigned char *data, with my decrypted data and the pos or data_size, with the length of buffer data , decrypted. I Think there is Ok with this, and must be work, but i got some errors with this, when the Email is read to get them, the total length read is diferent from the W flag in header name. FETCH [] for mailbox INBOX UID 2 got too little data: 1351 vs 1352 FETCH [] for mailbox INBOX UID 1 got too little data: 1357 vs 1360 FETCH [] for mailbox INBOX UID 3 got too little data: 691 vs 1303 There is some variable or something that i forgot to update with this news values ? Seriously, I just have to ask this question. Why mark via the subject line a message as "OFF LIST" and then send it via the normal list framework. Doing so only insures that the message is actually "ON LIST" irregardless of what nomenclature is used in the subject line. If a message is truly supposed to be "OFF LIST", then why not send it directly to its intended recipient(s)? If, on the other hand, it is meant for general review by the groups members, then why mark it "OFF LIST" to begin with? I am aware of the prefix "OT" used in several forums; however, that is usually only used to thwart the moderator of the forum from banning the message or chastising the OP. Hello, is it possible to use differnent ssl certs for pop3 and imap ? I like to have differnet dnsnames for pop3 an imap services configured at customers clients. I tried to configure ssl_key and ssl_cert inside a <protocol>-login {} section but this failed. Of course I know sslcerts containing multiple dnsnames. But this seemes not a real, clean solution to me. You are conflating UI blocking with network blocking (download), probably because that's how TB does it. IMHO, when you open a mailbox, messages should fill in and be accessible immediately, ie as soon as the headers are downloaded. Beyond a screenful, the client should continue to download headers so that when you do scroll down, there is no delay. This is especially useful when you are on a slow link. You spend SO much time doing nothing, ie reading messages, while the client could be doing work for you, and then when you scroll you have to wait again? Also you have to adjust this behavior if server-side sorting is not available and the user wants something other than message order. If you're worried about "wasting" bandwidth, a valid concern, the client need only prefetch another screenful of messages at a time. If your client is configured to sync message bodies, it should go ahead and do that before you start actually reading them, so that you are not waiting on download. Apple Mail, for one, seems to implement things as I've described. Note I am in now way endorsing Apple Mail as a good IMAP client. -frank

First off, I have to say I really like the antispam plugin. I am running a (relatively) new freebsd 8.0 server with postfix/dovecot/dspam/squirrelmail and it works great. Create a SPAM folder and tell the dovecot antispam plugin to use INBOX.SPAM as the spam folder and drag messages from INBOX to the spam folder and they are trained as spam. Here is the problem though: after training dspam for a couple of weeks, I had a couple hundred messages in the SPAM folder, so I selected them and hit the DELETE button and they were gone. Except they weren't. I had forgotten that by default squirrelmail moves deleted messages to a Trash folder under INBOX. So the messages were moved out of the SPAM folder, resulting in them being retrained as ham. Oops :( I then hit the purge link in squirrelmail and the messages were forever gone, so I couldn't rectify my gaffe. I have temporarily reconfigured squirrelmail to delete messages outright rather than save them in the Trash folder, but I don't like that as a long-term solution. What occurred to me is this: the current algorithm is: if message moves from * => SPAM, it is trained as spam, if it moves from SPAM => *, it is trained as ham. It would be nice if you could elaborate on that such that the ham rule was "if message moves from SPAM to X, it is ham" (and in my case, I would defined X as INBOX. Thoughts?

Hi, I'm a long term dovecot user, packager and believer, but on the other side of the wire I've been a mutt user for longer than I can think. Which modern email client under Linux is working best with dovecot? I just did a grep on User-Agent:/X-Mailer: on my dovecot archive (which goes back to 2004) and found that the top ten are: 28% Thunderbird 25% Evolution 9% Apple Mail 9% Mutt 5% Mozilla 3% KMail 2% Outlook 2% SquirrelMail 1% Alpine 1% Mulberry ... So it looks like most Linux people here like to use Thunderbird and Evolution. Hi, I was following the earlier namespaces discussion and I would like to repost a doubt. I need to have some kind of archiving, it means, store old messages into a cheap storage. But I couldn´t think any other solution than symlinks. Then, I thought about store 'Sent Items' (as having old messages and less acessed). But I also needed to do with nfs and symlinks. So, it comes the namespaces discussion and a little brainstorm: 1) Could I have a namespace only with INBOX and the personal folders (drafts, sent items, etc) in another one - and those would be stored in huge sata disks while inbox in 300g sas disks ? 2) Could I maintain the prior configuration, but let the second namespace hidden and having the inbox subfolders (or any specific as sent items) as virtual folder ? I don´t know if this makes sense... 3) Could I have my normal Inbox and a folder (in another disk - ex. huge sata one) storing files older than 30 days and through virtual folders join these messages in a common virtual INBOX while acessing imap or pop3 ? Hello folkz, I'm trying to compile and install Dovecot 1.2.10 from sources. When I execute: ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/dovecot make make install I reasonably expect to find dovecot libraries in /usr/local/dovecot/lib but it puts them into /usr/local/dovecot/lib/dovecot. It add this extra 'dovecot' at the end of almost every installation path. Could somebody please clarify what extra configuration parameters should be set to make to change this strange dovecot installation directories layout. Thank you very much in advance, Alex

[Dovecot] body search very slow since upgrade from 1.0.15 to 1.2.10

Did you mislead me Timo? You said search in 1.1+ is faster than 1.0. I'm seeing approximately 20x *slower* search times in 1.2.10. Via Thunderbird, a full body search of my 11,000+ message IMAP folder hosted by 1.0.15 used to take less than 10 seconds. Since upgrading to 1.2.10 the search is taking over 3 minutes, the imap process servicing the client pegging one CPU at 100% for the duration of the search. Here's the mbox file: -rw------- 1 stan stan 50M Feb 23 07:41 1-Spam-l Doing the same search via grep results in a time of: real 0m0.361s user 0m0.204s sys 0m0.140s grep takes less than half a second, yet dovecot 1.2.10 takes 3 minutes for the same search? Actually grep is searching the entire file including headers, so it's doing more work than the imap process. Something is *SERIOUSLY* wrong here. Did I somehow nerfed something in dovecot.conf that's causing this? I deleted all the index files as per the upgrade instructions. Hi, I'm trying to set Dovecot up in a way that is compatible with console usage of the same mailboxes (ie, w/o IMAP). My mailboxen are almost all maildirs (I can ignore all other formats), and are laid out as follows: INBOX = ~/Maildir All other folders are maildirs in ~/Mail Eg. ~/Mail/archive, ~/Mail/sent, ~/Mail/some-mailing-list I configured this, along the lines of http://wiki.dovecot.org/Namespaces: # I unset 'mail_location' namespace private { separator = '/' prefix = location = maildir:~/Maildir inbox = yes list = yes subscriptions = yes } namespace private { separator = / prefix = archives/ location = maildir:~/Mail hidden = no #subscriptions = yes inbox = no list = yes } which I thought should do it, but it doesn't. In TB (3, if it matters), I see: Inbox Trash archives Trash Inbox (shaded) directory (shaded) And that's about it. I don't see any of the pre-existing maildirs in ~/Mail. I also can't delete the two additional "Inbox" and "Trash" folders, and I can't subscribe to the second "Inbox", nor to "directory". I proceeded to create a new folder under "archives", which mostly ended up to be a new maildir + index files under ~/Mail, but it had a '.' in front of it. Also, the separator was automatically reset to '.' for the second namespace, as I found out when I renamed one of the directories from 'dir.1' to '.dir.1'. [Dovecot] Occasional problem with POP3-Download

Hello everyone, I have two mailservers [1] running dovecot. Mail store format is maildir. Every once in a while I have the following problem: When a User downloads his mail via POP3, the client says something like "the server has closed the connection unexpectedly, and gives this reason: [...blahblah...]". One can now cancel the download, and restart it, and the problem shows up again and again. The first few mails get downloaded, and then the process stops. Strange to say the "blahblah"-portion is a piece of text out of the email that doesn't want to get downloaded. Then I remove this single message out of the Maildir/cur-directory, and everything is fine again. It is easy to figure out which mail to delete because it's the first one that is not market as seen [...] filename...:2,S otherfilename...;2, <= this file must be deleted [...] For me it looks as if dovecot had a problem with some byte sequence in this mail, and for some reason it gives an error message to the client which is taken out of the mail. On the SuSE-Machine, before dovecot there was a courier-imapd running, which never showed this kind of problem, so it should not be a client problem. Hopefully my description is clear enough. Does anyone have an idea what's going on here? Thanks. Hello, dovecot-1.2.10 dovecot-sieve-0.1.14 dovecot-managesieve-0.11.11 I believe I patched dovecot successfully and compiled the dovecot and dovecot-sieve source tress. patching file README.managesieve patching file dovecot-example.conf patching file src/master/child-process.c patching file src/master/child-process.h patching file src/master/listener.c patching file src/master/login-process.c patching file src/master/mail-process.c patching file src/master/main.c patching file src/master/master-settings-defs.c patching file src/master/master-settings.c patching file src/master/master-settings.h Then I configure dovecot-managesieve and this completes without error. But when I make dovecot-managesieve I get this error: # Making all in managesieve .... main.c:195: error: variable 'managesieve_sieve_env' has initializer but incomplete type # Where should I be looking for a solution? Hi, I have an Android Mail App which worked fine with IDLE pushes before (K-9 Mail) under 1.2.10. With 2.0 beta 3 it seems to be looking for an IDLE prompt from the server, otherwise it will disable connection idling (whether this is valid or not). Setting 'imap_capability = IMAP4rev1 LITERAL+ SASL-IR LOGIN-REFERRALS ID IDLE ENABLE' does the trick, but is it possible to add additional values to the default reply like this? imap_capability = +IDLE ...or whatever syntax/form one would chose to preserve internal defaults. is there a plugin or some other method by which i could have a user ONLY have access to subscribed folders? having a separate login or a separate instance of dovecot is ok if necessary. the iPhone always shows ALL folders, not just subscribed ones. i'd like to be able to see only the subscribed folders.

I can start dovecot, but I can't login, at least not with SSL. And since I had to break some of them, I decided it could be a good time to do some other less necessary API cleanups. This made things again much simpler. I'm hoping to get v2.0.rc1 out in not too distant future. Pretty much the only big missing feature that I wanted to do is being able to add per-protocol auth settings (e.g. protocol smtp { userdb { .. } }), but that doesn't seem to be all that easy to implement. There are of course some bugs still left to be fixed, mainly related to mdbox and dsync. User visible changes: - imap_zlib plugin implements COMPRESS=DEFLATE IMAP extension - zlib plugin: Added support for compressing mails while saving - zlib plugin: fixed reading bzip2 compressed mail files - zlib plugin: Added support for dbox and mdbox formats - mdbox: doveadm purge moves old mails to alt storage (if using alt storage) - added support for tcpwrappers - added support for SHA512 password scheme (by Mark Washenberger) - mailbox deletion is now free of race conditions (e.g. quota calculations). if another session tries to access mailbox before it's fully deleted, it'll get "Mailbox is being deleted" error. - "key = $set" in config file now sets key's value to "set" setting's value. this is probably rather limited outside the only place where I created it for: service { user = $default_internal_user } - default_internal_user and default_login_user settings now specify what users should be used for them. currently the default is still dovecot and dovecot, but I'm hoping to change default_login_user to something else.. - Removed maildir_copy_preserve_filename setting. It's now always tried to be preserved (or rather: message's GUID is preserved) - auth failure penalty tries to avoid increasing penalty for IP if auth is failing always with the same user+password combination. - doveadm penalty command can be used to see the current penalties - login processes: config lookups are now cached, so it no longer asks for configuration from config process every time (except if there are remote {} blocks in config. also the local {} caching could be smarter.) - Tons of mdbox fixes - Tons of dsync fixes, especially with mbox So some of the changes visible to developers are: - dovecot-config file changed. if your external plugin uses this file, you need to change it to use the new format. - added dovecot.m4 file that can be used by external plugins' configure script to get Dovecot settings. This was mainly done by Dennis Schridde. - mailbox_alloc() no longer has stream parameter, instead there's mailbox_open_stream() - mailbox_close() renamed to mailbox_free(). added a different mailbox_close(), which only closes opened mailbox, but doesn't free it. - mailbox_delete(), mailbox_rename() APIs changed - notify plugin's delete/rename API changed as well - mailbox GUID is now looked up using mailbox_get_guid(), not mailbox_status() - dict_iterate*() API changed

Is it possible to use one (big) dovecot.conf or must I split it into pieces into directory conf.d? What is the best procedure to convert the configuration file? Any pointers welcome. --Frank Elsner

Hello, while reading config options for dovecot v1.2.10 I've noticed a very small bug: # ./configure --help | egrep -- 'Dovecot|--with-gnu-ld' `configure' configures Dovecot 1.2.10 to adapt to many kinds of systems. --with-gnu-ld assume the C compiler uses GNU ld [default=no] --with-gnu-ld assume the C compiler uses GNU ld default=no I think the latter entry should be removed. Hello everyone, I am currently running Dovecot as a high performance solution to a particular kind of problem. My userbase is small, but it murders email servers. The volume is moderate, but message retention requirements are stringent, to put it nicely. Many users receive a high volume of email traffic, but want to keep every message, and *search* them. This produces mail accounts up to 14+GiB. After seeing the failures of my predecessors, I transitioned to Postfix/Dovecot and haven't looked back. Things are running nicely with the below setup. Postfix and Dovecot running on the same virtual machine on a Dell 2950 with 1x Xeon E5440 on ESXi 4. Maildirs served up by 10x146GB 15k RPM SAS drives on RAID-10 via direct attached Dell MD-1000. We are transitioning other services to high availability, and I'm wondering exactly how to provide some kind of near-realtime failover for my Postfix/Dovecot machine. The MD-1000 provides nothing in the way of iSCSI, but it *does* have two SAS connections available, only one of which is in use. I have been looking at the Dell EqualLogic stuff and it seems to provide what we need. I can get most of the information I need from the rep, but I wonder if anyone has any experience with high performance requirements on these kinds of storage. I'd like to continue running my current hardware as the primary mail server, but provide some kind of failover using the SAN. The primary usage of the SAN will be to make our 2TB document store highly available. I'm wondering what kind of options I might have in the way of piggybacking some email failover on this kind of hardware without sacrificing the performance I'm currently enjoying. Is it possible to go with a virtual machine mounted on iSCSI acting as a backup mail server? How would I sync the two, NBD+MD? Any experience doing this with maildirs? I wonder about the performance. Can it be as simple as attaching my MD-1000's second controller to the SAN magic box via SAS and pressing the Easy button? Is it as expensive as running my primary mailserver mounted from the SAN via Fiber Channel? Will that get me under 30ms latency? Hi, This might be a silly question: which would be the best inode ratio for a 5 Tb filesystem dedicated to Maildir++ storage? I use ubuntu server, which has a preconfigured setting for mkfs.ext4 called "news" with inode_ratio = 4096, and after formating the fs with that setting and then with the defautl setting I see this difference of space (wasted space, but more inodes): 4328633696 free 1K-blocks with mkfs's "-T news" switch = 1219493877 free inodes 4557288800 free 1K-blocks with default mkfs settings = 304873461 free inodes I'll be storing e-mail messages for around 20,000 accounts on that partition (average 512 Mb per account). Would you consider worth the waste of about 200 Gb of the filesystem space in exchange of more inodes? Thanks. Rodolfo.

Hi all, The home page of the Dovecot website indicates: "Supports multiple commonly used IMAP extensions, including SORT, THREAD and IDLE." However, I cannot find instructions in the Wiki for how to enable these extensions. Can someone tell me how to do this? I will add this info to the Wiki myself if need be. http://blog.dovecot.org/ I was thinking that I could blog about: - ideas for new Dovecot feature designs - when I actually manage to implement some new great feature - maybe some stuff about IMAP/email in general - and maybe whenever I happen to be moving to a different country I wasn't really planning on announcing new releases there. Dovecot feature designs are also sent to Dovecot mailing list, as before. But there have been other things I've thought about mentioning somewhere, but Dovecot ML didn't really seem like the right place. I doubt I'll update the blog very often. But that probably makes it even more useful, since casual readers find the useful stuff quickly. :)
