[Dovecot] Dovecot Deliver CPU usage

Hi All, We have upgraded the dovecot from 1.0 to 1.2.8. After upgradation we have noticed that dovecot deliver process is utilizing a lot of CPU. As a result the mailsystem will stop working. When we limit the no of procs in postfix for dovecot deliver the CPU usage will come down. But we are not facing this problem with the previous version. Below is the log files for dovecot when the error occurs write_full(/home/vmail/dhanbank.co.in/vinukumarvm/temp.server.be3e5a849a909847) failed: No space left on device dovecot: deliver(user(a)example.com): stat(/tmp/Dovecot Delivery Mail) failed: No space left on device But my system has 54gb of free space for root filesystem where tmp residing. Hi all, after inserting another sieve-rule, I get the following backtrace on deliver. The mail gets delivered into the Mailbox, but as deliver does not exit with 0, postfix bounces the mail. Greetings all, I have a OpenBSD /Dovecot server at home running and sending / receiving email "internally" without issue.. Recently, I set up the same at our Parish, but one of our users wants to get their email externally. The user can read their email but has to "send" via the local ISP server.. The problem After much searching I have not found an answer to my question. I would like the user to authenticate to be able to "send" email "through" the server.. OpenBSD uses bsdauth by default in Dovecot. It may be something very simple that I am missing.. In Windows Live Mail I have this setting enabled: "Remove From Server When Deleted From Deleted Items". It does not seem to remove them even when the trash is emptied though. Am using POP3 access. Anyone else see this? Matt

I forked the wiki to http://wiki1.dovecot.org/ is the old docs for v1.x http://wiki2.dovecot.org/ is the new docs for v2.0 For now wiki.dovecot.org points to wiki1, but once v2.0 is released I'll change it to point to wiki2. I symlinked the user directory, so users should stay synced between the wikis. The main reason for wiki2 is to be able to describe Dovecot v2.0's actual behavior everywhere and get rid of all the old v1.x specific settings. The wiki1 is already annoyingly bloated and confusing with information about v1.0 and then v1.1 and maybe even how it's still different in v1.2.. Now would be a good time to do any other larger changes, if anyone has suggestions. :) (Oh, and I haven't yet done any actual changes to wiki2..)

Hello Dovecot users, Due to personal matters I haven't had time to do anything in the last few weeks. Before that I provided some pre-releases and since nobody indicated problems with those, I release them definitively now. I hope the shit storm has blown over, so that I can dedicate more of my time towards Pigeonhole development. The Sieve release involves a large architectural change, but also fixes quite a few small problems. The ManageSieve release is necessary to match Sieve API changes. Changelog Sieve v0.1.14: * Made the imposed limits on the number of redirects and the number of actions configurable. The settings are called sieve_max_actions and sieve_max_redirects. * Did a major rework of extension handling, making sure that no global state is maintained. This change was triggered by problems that global state info would cause for Dovecot v2.0, but it is also important for v1.2 as it significantly cleans up the library implementation. + Made LDA Sieve plugin recognize the deliver_log_format setting. + Message headers produced from user-supplied data are now RFC2047-encoded if necessary for outgoing messages. This is for example important for the :subject argument of the vacation action. + Added support for the $text$ substitution in the deprecated notify extension. + The subaddress extension now also accepts recipient_delimiter setting as an alias for sieve_subaddress_sep setting. This anticipates the recipient_delimiter setting in v2.0. - Fixed logging of mailbox names. It logged the converted mUTF7 version in stead of the original UTF8 version supplied by the user. - Fixed a minor memory leak in the multiscript support. - Fixed a bug in the recompilation of Sieve scripts. Hi all: We're planning to deploy a large e-mail system storing maildirs in a NAS system through NFS. One of the options we're thinking on is using Dovecot+EXIM. As far as I've read in both project's documentation, both services implement locking allowing multiple servers to access the same maildirs in order to distribute the service load. However, I can't find any information explaining whether both locking mechanisms are compatible, whether any additional configuration is needed both in Dovecot and/or EXIM, or even whether any locking synchronization between both services is needed/recommendable at all. The only remote clue I've found is that, according to Dovecot docs: "Because Dovecot uses its own non-standard locking (dovecot-uidlist.lock dotlock file), other MUAs accessing the maildir don't support it." (but EXIM is not a MUA, anyway) Anyhow theoretically MailDir could even be considered free of locking problems, but I'm not sure of the real implications of putting together several Exim and Dovecot installations pointing to the same NFS filesystem. Any knowledge/experience/link/clue on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Daniel Campos

Hi, i've just upgraded to dovecot-1.2.8 (from 1.2.4) and do now get the following errors when deliver gets hands on mails with some attachments. # tail -n 1 /var/log/messages Dec 14 19:00:36 mail3 dovecot: deliver(user): Panic: file istream.c: line 96 (i_stream_read): assertion failed: (stream->eof) The MTA is postfix running inside a FreeBSD 7.2-STABLE jail. The homes where deliver should put mails are mounted via NFS. As it works with small attachments perhaps this is related to the message size. However i don't get the "stale NFS file handle" error any more which i did under 1.2.4 (See thread that begins with: Message-ID: <20091016122519.GC6309(a)emmi.physik-pool.tu-berlin.de> ) Greetings, Leon

[Dovecot] dovecot: pipe() failed: Too many open files

In the past few months we've been having increasing problems with dovecot timing out pop3 logins. As best I can tell it gets to the point where it won't accept any new pop3 logins. The error in the mail log is: dovecot: pipe() failed: Too many open files I've researched this problem a number of times, usually I see suggestions to increase ulimit. I've done this a number of times, all the way up to: ulimit -n 8192 I've put that in the init script right above the daemon start line. So far it hasn't helped. In addition, when looking at lsof, it doesn't seem like we're anywhere near the actual limit. for example, last time dovecot only had 1032 files open. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing the error? Or what else I can try to figure this out? [Dovecot] Maildir on NFS - attribute caching question

Hi Timo, We've been running Dovecot with Maildir on NFS for quite a while - since back in the 1.0 days I believe. I'm somewhat new here. Anyway... The Wiki article on NFS states that 1.1 and newer will flush attribute caches if necessary with mail_nfs_storage=yes. We're running 1.2.8 with that set, as well as mail_nfs_index=yes, mmap_disable=yes and fsync_disable=no. We have a pool of POP/IMAP and SMTP machines that are accessing the maildirs, and can't guarantee any sort of user session affinity to a particular host. We also mount our NFS shares with 'noac', which is what I'm writing to ask about. I'd like to stop doing that for performance reasons. Do you see any issues with taking that out of the mount options, given our environment? Thanks, -Brad

[Dovecot] lot's of timeouts

Hi, since some time ago we do have a lot of "timeouts" connecting to our imap/po3 server. This week I switched the whole system to a new dual quadcore xeon, 24GB RAM, SAS2 RAID-10. (SUN Fire 4170) But the mailclients (mostly thunderbird and apple mail) still reporte the timeouts by accessing the mailboxes. The server is doing smtp, imap/pop3, webmailsystem and spam/antivirus-checking all together. (RH EL 5, sendmail, horde, mysql, mailscanner, spamassassin) We use the original RH dovecot-1.0.7, mbox-format and mailboxes up to 4 GB ... (historicaly grown ...) So where to start debugging the imap/pop3 timeouts? What information may I provide, which doc may I read? Thanks for helping me to find and fix the problem. Either the old config file should be translated to new one, or Dovecot should be able to read the old config file as-is. I think I like the translation better, so that people won't still be using v1.x configuration when v2.1 arrives and drops v1.x support. Seems to work but it's weird that I lost my subscribed folders. Also the perl script imapsync is only seeing an inbox and no other folders. I seem to be creating a lot of name mailboxes where my INBOX and other folders are located. /opt/local/var/mail/domain.com/username/dbox/mailboxes This dir is getting populated with new INBOX and default folders. Hi all We are planning to upgrade Dovecot from production version 1.0.10 to latest version 1.2.9 Users are using maildir style mailboxes with ~20 GB of messages on SLES10 server. Upgrade will be done by installing new server and then migrating mailboxes from old on new server. Since dovecot-uidlist file have new format and index files have changed in v1.1, what must be done to have new Dovecot v1.2 working properly with old v1.0 maildirs? Thanks, regards Ivica Glavocic

Currently I'm stuck with trying to file messages that got to the user "lists" to the public namespace' System folder (public/System) with sieve. The Dovecot version is 1.2.8 and i am using an LDAP for a user database. The problem is following... i would like to use a quota dictionary backend from file rather than sql proxy for some reasons. Is it possible to get the full path for dovecot-quota file location from LDAP like from mail variable (/mailboxes/storage_01/domain.org/u/us/use/user/dbox/dovecot-quota)? /etc/dovecot/dovecot-ldap.conf user_attrs = storageBase=home,mailMessageStore=mail=dbox:~/%$/dbox/,mailQuota=quota_rule=*:bytes=%$,mailQuotaMessageLimit=quota_rule2=*:messages=%$ Also is it also possible the same for sieve location? If a mailbox is deleted, its messages are merged with its old expunged messages (if there were any). + expire: Settings now support spaces in mailbox names by using quoted strings. - maildir: v1.2.7 and v1.2.8 caused assert-crashes in maildir_uidlist_records_drop_expunges() - maildir_copy_preserve_filename=yes could have caused crashes. - Maildir++ quota: % limits weren't updated when limits were read from maildirsize. - virtual: v1.2.8 didn't fully fix the "lots of mailboxes" bug - virtual: Fixed updating virtual mailbox based on flag changes. - fts-squat: Fixed searching multi-byte characters.

Hi Timo, the imap_client_workarounds are not always parsed. There was on situation, in which cmd->client->set->parsed_workarounds was set to WORKAROUND_TB_EXTRA_MAILBOX_SEP. Sorry, I can't remember what I have done. But when I try to delete a mailbox with Thunderbird imap_client_workarounds are not parsed: (gdb) print cmd->client->set->imap_client_workarounds $7 = 0x1422de0 "tb-extra-mailbox-sep" (gdb) print cmd->client->set->parsed_workarounds $8 = 0 And therefor the command 'x delete box_with_trailing_slash/' fails. Hi All, I'm new to the list and have a quota question. I am building a new server with dovecot/qmail/vpopmail/mysql and emails are sending and recieving fine when the quota is set to NOQUOTA, but when the quota is changed qmail doesn't deliver any messages. I have read the docs and still need some help understanding the process for dovecot quotas relating to the vpopmail mysql database they are stored in. Thanks for your help. Hi to all! I’m setting up dovecot 1.2.8 on my system to substitute an older IMAP server and I’m testing all features of Dovecot. Yesterday I was testing support for zlib, for compressed messages, to set up a new namespace for old mails and I read that it is safe to compress only mails that have the field “S=XXX” in their name (XXX being the original size of message) and to leave uncompressed the ones that don’t have S=XXX in their name. Testing and searching I discovered that only new mail, mail that used to arrive in mailbox via SMTP have S=XXX, mail copied from another mailbox loose S=XXX. Later I’ve found that this not work anymore, even directly delivered mail messages do not have S=XXX anymore. I use dovecot-lda as delivery program and postfix as SMTP server, but I’ve not touched postfix configuration since one month ago. What can it be? How can I have S=XXX again in my messages file name? Currently Dovecot only logs user principal w/o REALM. So before I go in production maybe somebody already run into this using Dovecot? If not I just create virtual machines and see how it behaves.

What is the appropriate setting for mail_max_userip_connections ? My POP3 connections seem to be mostly 1 at a time, but my IMAP connections are often 3 per user per IP. Is this appropriate? I have an user script like following: require ["copy"]; redirect :copy "addr1(a)dom.ain"; redirect :copy "addr2(a)dom.ain"; All works fine, but if addr1@... has exceeded quota, this script seems stop working and addr2@... doesn't receive this message too. Hi, Environment: >10000 Users (LDAP) Solaris 10 / sparc imap: dovecot-1.1.10 (pam-unix, no direct LDAP access) pop: dovecot-1.0.14 on another server (pam-unix, no direct LDAP access) mta: postfix (pam-unix, no direct LDAP access) procmail (pam-unix, no direct LDAP access) Filesystems: Inboxes and IMAP-home are on two different SAM-FS volumes. Problem description: Inboxes of users are disappearing / are truncated. we are using dovecot-1.1.0 since two month as main IMAP server. It replaced our long running but old version of UW-IMAP. Till the last week we had no problems and it worked quite well and the whole mail system worked in this configuration since several years. But since a week we receive more and more complaints regarding truncated/deleted mailboxes. First, we assumed user/client errors, but as such messages arrive more frequently, we did a deep analysis of the issue. The only common component of our mail system (postfix (local), procmail, pop, imap) that all concerned users have accessed, was dovecot-imap v. 1.1.10. We have no locking problems, we use fcntl(), dotlock for all mail components. We tested this with a small perl script and locking works fine (no delivery to a locked mailbox and so on...) Finally, all indications point to a bug in dovecot. Google and searches in this mailing list did not come up with any valuable results. Are there any known bugs / configuration problems concerned to the described problem? I greatly appreciate any help! Thx in advance Harald Strack

Hi, I want to use the zlib plugin to compress my mail storage. According to the wiki, only messages with size attribute in the message id should by compressed. If I added the size part, dovecot assumes it is a new message. While dovecot undertands the ',S=<size>' attribute (IMAP shows that size), I could not configure deliver to add the size to message name. I'm using dovecot v1.0.13 Regards, M. Alhashash

Here it is again to the correct mailing list: Recently I'm getting a ton of porn/viagra/diet/casino spam mails which I tried to filter with sieve: if header :contains "Subject" [ "[SPAM]", "Bett", "Schlafzimmer", "Spielen", "Luder", "abhenmen", "poppen", "Casino", "Bonus", "abnehmen", "Gewinn", "Potenz" ] { addflag "\\seen"; fileinto "Spam"; stop; } Sadly, this didn't work - taking a closer look upon one of the spam mails, it seems the spamming rats have encoded the subject: Subject: =?US-ASCII?B?RW5kbGljaCBtZWhyIGVuZ2FnZW1lbnQgaW0gQmV0dGNoZW4=?= (reads: "Endlich mehr engagement im Bettchen") I'm thinking about filtering all such encoded subjects (as there's no reason to encode them US-ASCII), but suppose it were UTF-8 or something: how can I filter on the actual content, not the encoded subject? Hi all! I got a Debian with postfix-dovecot-spamassassin. I got a non perfect installation: when an internal mail has been sent i got this error: <error> ex: from root@* to root@*. Command output: Can't open log file /var/log/dovecot.log: Permission denied </error> Operations like "dovecot: 2009-12-15 11:17:24 Warning: Killed with signal 15" are writen. Dear Dovecot list, I maintain a few small sendmail/dovecot/procmail based mail servers with system users only (no virtual domains or virtual users) on OpenBSD. I have been able to get a vacation system working with both with the native vacation program from OpenBSD and with procmail. I've been looking into dovecot sieve, but it doesn't appear to solve the bigger user complaint which is, they want to be able to control the vacation feature w/o my involvement. What is wanted is a system where the users can send a control mail message to themselves with the reply body in the message or failing that perhaps a secure web page to control the vacation function. Mail administration is NOT a full time job for me. I'm looking for simple, low overhead solutions. Any suggestions? Thanks for your time. Ray

Hello I have a problem with dovecot-sieve. When I create a folder in russian, the filter is not working properly. It creates a new folder with the same name and delivers the letter there. For example, I created a folder called &BD8EQAQ4BDIENQRC-/, but the letter got in &-BD8EQAQ4BDIENQRC-/. In all cases, the difference in the sign -. [Dovecot] Doubts about namespace && thunderbird.

Hi people. I ask this because I'm confuse about the namespace stuff. I setup a server with Centos 5.4(updated)+dovecot 1.0.7+postfix 2.3.3. We use thunderbird 2.0.x as our default email client. I want to use courier-imap inbox layout: Inbox-- sent junk trash draft The inbox as father of the tree, other post say something about a namespace like this: separator = . prefix = Inbox. inbox = yes If I make this, thunderbird go crazy and tell me each time I try to access a user mail that :server respond-->unknown namespace, with this my layout is: Inbox Trash But if I try to access Trash, is went he send me that error and none of my users could access those folders. What is the problem with this? Now if I comment the namespace, my folders goes below the father(Inbox) u could not see the different. Last thing, how can I setup a global layout where each user the first time they log-in thunderbird could make: Trash, Draft, Sent? Thanks!!!

Hello, I'm having problems with expire-tool in Dovecot 1.2.6 not finding the mailboxes. I had mail_location = mbox:/var/spool/dovecotmail/%d/%n/mails:INDEX=/var/spool/dovecotmail/%d/%n/indexes in dovecot.conf, but that doesn't work with expire-tool. So I commented that out from dovecot.conf, all the data is in a database anyway. A userdb lookup returns the following for userid@domain: home = /var/spool/dovecotmail/domain/userid/ mail = mbox:/var/spool/dovecotmail/domain/userid/mails:INDEX=/var/spool/dovecotmail/domain/userid/indexes Now when running expire-tool --test, I get this: Error: Namespace '': Mail storage autodetection failed with home=/var/spool/dovecotmail/domain/userid/ Info: User lookup failed: userid@domain When I run expire-tool under strace, I can see that it is indeed looking for the mails in the typical autodetect locations (Maildir, mail, Mail) under user's home directory. So it appers that expire-tool takes the home directory from userdb, but ignores mail location returned by userdb? Tapio

[Dovecot] outlook 2007 mailbox sort order

What are people doing to affect the sort order of mailboxes in outlook? Apple Mail and MS Outlook similarly suck in that they do not sort '~' correctly -- mailboxes starting with '~' are first instead of last. At least I think this is the fault of the client, since Mulberry sorts correctly. At least with Apple Mail I can drag and drop mailboxes into any display order I like, so at least after the fact it can be "corrected". I want to provide shared, virtual and lazy_expunge mailboxes. I'd like these to be last in the list of mailboxes. This doesn't seem possible with Outlook unless I prefix the names with 'zz' or similar. yuk. -frank

Post-login scripts work a bit differently in v2.0, because the old way just couldn't work anymore. I suppose at some point I should fork the wiki to v1.x and v2.x and start writing these things there, but for now I'll just write it here: First you'll need to tell imap service that it should connect to postlogin service: service imap { executable = imap imap-postlogin } Then you'll need the imap-postlogin service: # The service name below doesn't actually matter. service imap-postlogin { executable = script rawlog /tmp/test.sh unix_listener imap-postlogin { } } The "script" executable does all the magic. If you want multiple scripts, just make them a chain, like above script first executes rawlog, and rawlog then executes /tmp/test.sh: #!/bin/sh echo "* OK Hello $USER ($IP -> $LOCAL_IP)" export MAIL=maildir:/tmp/test export USERDB_KEYS="$USERDB_KEYS mail" exec $* So it's pretty similar to how it works before, except now you'll also need to update $USERDB_KEYS to contain all environments that you want to pass to imap process.

People, There is an imap client, which runs with user1 uid, but when its accessed to watch a maildir, whose (and its contents) ownership is user1:user1, this error occurs: dovecot: IMAP(user1): fchown(/path/user1/dovecot-uidlist.tmp, -1, 12(mail)) failed: Operation not permitted (egid=1000(user1), group based on /path/user1) dovecot.conf contains this line: mail_privileged_group = mail authentication happens through passwd-file, where for user1 its uid and gid are specified as in /etc/passwd and /etc/group. So how should dovecot be told to use user1 group instead of mail group? (or it needs some other solution?)

Hi there, I'm trying to let dovecot generate the userhome directory dynamicly via user_attr. If "uid" is returned from LDAP before "mail" everything is fine, but if "mail" is delivered before "uid" the localpart of the mailaddress is used in home path. e.g.: Mail: testuser(a)domain.de UID : test123 sometimes home is /mail/store/testuser and sometimes /mail/store/test123 depending on the order the ldap server replies. I'm currently using version 1.2.7 of dovecot in testing and 1.1.6 in production. Both have the same "bug". Mails are stored on nfs, indexes are stored local. [Dovecot] Dovecot Sieve some rules not working

Hope this list is the right place for a question about dovecot sieve. I have some rules of which some are working and some are not. But the second and third one don't work and emails matching those rules remain in INBOX. There are not errors in the errorfile in users home directory. The only thing I changed was to move the Folder "Computer &- Security" and changed the fileinto destinations accordingly. The folder "Junk E-mail" was not moved but the rule that worked before is not working anymore. I have no clue why only part of the rules work and where I could check what the problem coud be. [Dovecot] Problems with listescape and mutt

Hello, we are using Dovecot 1.2.6 with activated listescape-Plugin. Mutt mutt seems to have a problem with listescape (or my configuration [1] is screwed). When I log in with mutt over imap an press "c", I see al the folders, .Trash, .Drafts etc. But when I try to change to .Drafts (for example), mutt gives me the error the he can't find the folder "\2eDrafts". Is this a Problem with the listescape-Plugin or a Problem mith the mutt-Configuration? Any hints are welcome. I don't know if this tool already exists, or if not how difficult it would be to implement, but the following is an excerpt from the man page the developer needs to write ;) - "imapcopy", a command-line utility that connects to a given IMAP account and copies the mails to a second IMAP account. This is accomplished using only IMAP commands and may be used with any IMAP compliant server - and may be used to copy mails between servers. Hi, after setting up a KVM based virtual guest on one of our virtualization servers, we see dovecot die on that virtual guest regularly because of an alleged time shift. The virtual guest is Centos 5.4 based with dovecot 1.2.8 (at first we also tried with the original 1.0.7 (?) dovecot shipped with Centos). I wrote "alleged time shift" because there is no timeshift whatsoever, or at least I don't notice it anywhere else. ntp is - of course ;-) - up and running and no other applications have time troubles and I've even disabled the local clock as a time reference. As a proof that the time did not shift see this log excerpt: ------CUT------- Nov 29 14:02:22 athesia dovecot: IMAP(atester): Connection closed Nov 29 14:04:11 athesia dovecot: imap-login: Time just moved backwards by 4397 seconds. [Dovecot] Overriding Default Subscription Behavior

The subscription files we're migrating from have a "." for folder separation. We will be using Dovecot's maildir with LAYOUT=fs. It's looking for "/" as the separator in the subscription file. So, obviously we could simply write a script to swap the two characters. However, just curious if there are any options for doing this within a plugin (since we're already doing some things in a plugin) by overriding some of the subscription code.something like the "next_line()" in subscriptions.c. I don't see any vfuncs in this area, aside from set_subscribed() I believe.but maybe there's a better spot I'm not thinking of? One thing I've learned with Dovecot is that it somehow supports things I didn't believe it could/would, so I thought I'd ask. Tony

[Dovecot] PostgreSQL connection bug

Hello, There seems to be a bug which can affect systems using PostgreSQL as a user or password database. Usually there is just one postgres connection, but if the query fails for any reason, the failed connection is left open and dovecot will keep opening new connections for each auth attempt. I discovered this with a setup using PAM, AND a database to authenticate. Most users login with an account number (integer) which is looked up in the postgres database. Some users have a unix system account, and use their system username to log in (string). Dovecot was set up to check the database first, then try PAM. When a system user logged in, the SQL query failed because it couldn't coerce the system user's username into an integer. In these cases, Dovecot would still fall back to PAM authentication, and the user would log in, but the postgres connection would remain stuck. Gradually the number of connections would increase until postgres failed. I worked around this by converting the account numbers in the database from integers to strings. Now the query never fails and there's only ever 1 dovecot connection. Hi, I have already set up DOVECOT + POSTFIX mail server and I can send and receive mails outside my Domain. The problem however is that LOCAL Mail is not working. Problem: Dovecot is totally and merrily oblivious to maildir INBOX installed in the usual /var/spool/mail/%u Software/system: Dovecot 1.2.8 running under Fedora 12 with 1.9 gig RAM + AMD Athlon LE-1640 CPU on a ASUS M3A78-EM motherboard (uname -a = Linux 2.6.31.6-162.fc12.x86_64 #1 SMP Fri Dec 4 00:06:26 EST 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux ) Dovecot has been installed from the Fedora repositories, not recompiled from scratch. System has only one hard disk and is on one ext4 LVM partition. My configurations are http://emdx.org/Dovecot/dovecot.confA.txt for "dovecot -a" http://emdx.org/Dovecot/dovecot.confN.txt for "dovecot -n" The mail is properly delivered by Exim in the proper place. Using a client (Thunderbird 3), if I copy some messages in the INBOX, they stay there, but they are nowhere to be found in the /var/spool/mail/%u directory. User mail is in ~/Maildir. I tried to make a symlink pointing to /var/spool/mail/%u and, of course, it does not work. I also tried giving chmod 666 to all files in /var/spool/mail/%u (and chmod 777 for the directories), this makes no difference. Otherwise, Dovecot works flawlessly and without no problems whatsoever in ~/Maildir. I can transfer huge volumes of email from the future old server and everything is rock solid. I just can’t get the INBOX. I would rather not fiddle with Exim and have it deliver the mail into ~/Maildir Google has been stellarly inefficient in helping me find solutions.

Hi, I have been experimenting with the Virtual mailboxes plugin [1] recently. This is my setup: the following dovecot-virtual file exists in a virtual mailbox called "todo": ------ dovecot-virtual ------ * -Trash -Trash/* -Spam -Spam/* OR KEYWORD $TODO KEYWORD todo ----------------------------- so if any mail in any mailbox except Trash+Spam has the keyword "$TODO" (that's what KMail sets when you mark a message as "action item") or "todo" (that's what Thunderbird sets when you put the Todo tag on a message), it should be shown in that 'todo' virtual mailbox. This works for the first time after I edit the dovecot-virtual file and then access the virtual mailbox (all mails I expect to be shown in the todo mailbox are there) - but further accesses always show the same content, even though I removed the keyword from one of the mails (and I can confirm that the keyword has actually been removed by dovecot, since the filename doesn't contain the letter corresponding to the keyword anymore). It seems that changing the dovecot-virtual file triggers the execution of the "search program" - but shouldn't simply accessing the virtual mailbox also trigger it? Or is there a (undocumented?) timeout between search program executions? Patrick. [Dovecot] Patch: event port-based ioloop and notify

Greetings, thanks to all of you who work on Dovecot! I have prepared a small patch to support Solaris 10 and Opensolaris' event port mechanism for both the ioloop and the notify subsystems. It seems to work fine for me, but I haven't conducted any extensive testing. It would be great if someone could review and/or test it (and if it could eventually enter the code base). [Dovecot] Mail.app + dovecot 1.2 + POP3

Hello all, I have an user with MacOS X 10.5 Mail.app 3.5, which is connecting using POP3 to a dovecot 1.2 server. He has a 512 kbps link, which he saturates downloading large files. While the bandwidth is saturated, Mail.app shows the POP3 account as "offline" (I haven't used that client, but it seems that it doesn't retry the connection if it fails at some moment). He argues that he has some other POP3 and IMAP4 accounts configured in the same app, and those accounts never go "offline" even if the bw usage is at 100% (those other accounts are not on my servers and I don't know which sw are they using). My question is, could dovecot be somehow involved in this "offline" issue? (something like the past IDLE issues with Outlook 2007?) Thanks in advanced.

Hi Timo, Okay, I'm confused now... Here is what we are using with 1.1.19: password_query = SELECT password, home as userdb_home, 5000 as userdb_uid, 5000 as userdb_gid FROM mailbox where userid = '%n' mail_location = maildir:/mail/%h:INDEX=MEMORY The "/mail/" dir contains 26 NFS mounted partitions. Will this still work in 1.2? I have been holding off upgrading because it sounded like I would have to add the "/mail/" prefix to all the "home" directories in my user DB, and with 5 instances of Dovecot running off the same DB, I would have to shut down the pop/imap servers for the upgrade, something that would NOT make my boss happy. However, if I can leave the configs and the database as they are, the update will not be a big problem. Please let me know if I can use the old configs with Dovecot 1.2.x, I would love to be using the latest and greatest. And BTW, thanks again for all your hard work, Dovecot is a wonderful piece of software, and we really appreciate it! - Richard

So instead of always wondering if the units are bytes or kilobytes or megabytes, you can just use e.g. 100k, 100M values. And the same for 100 secs, 100 mins, 100 hours, etc. - verbose_proctitle=yes was pretty useless in alpha2 after the pre/post-login changes. I've now enabled Linux proctitle hack that allows changing process title (in ps). It now shows e.g. the current command being executed by imap process. There is also some hope of getting a proper setproctitle() function to Linux, the patch just got to -mm code tree today! - anvil process now stays alive across SIGHUPs. So "doveadm who" no longer forgets users after SIGHUP. - remote_ip IP {} and local_ip IP {} changed to remote host|IP {} and local host|IP {}, i.e. if it's not an IP Dovecot does host name lookup. - Using host names is also important to get TLS SNI working. With TLS SNI support if client supports it, you can serve multiple certificates with a single IP address. - LMTP server adds now Received: header - Fixes to LMTP server - Fixes to dsync Some of the larger changes left: - plugin API probably needs to be changed, so that it's possible to handle multiple users by same process but with different plugins - config process is too slow - rawlog no longer works because of how pre/post-login works now. it probably needs to be changed into a service and configured something like: service imap-rawlog { executable = rawlog imap-real /home/%u unix_listener imap { } } service imap { unix_listener imap-real { } } The point would be that when imap-login connects to imap, it actually connects to rawlog which then connects to imap-real and starts proxying the connection. A few problems: 1) userdb lookup is done by imap process, so rawlog doesn't know user's home directory. Perhaps more code could be added so that rawlog requests imap process to send it back, but maybe that's too much trouble. That's why I thought just adding a 3rd /home/%u parameter, where rawlog expands %u to username since that's at least known. 2) Currently it's not possible to remove default internal unix_listeners, so the above config wouldn't actually work anyway. I guess there needs to be some new syntax like "!unix_listener imap" or something that removes it.. Then again, a nice thing about this is that the rawlog will work with all types of services, even imap-logins, although that's going to be almost useless for SSL connections.

Hi, First, I am new to dovecot. Before my Jan '08 meltdown, sendmail was sufficient. A friend set up dovecot and since things just-worked, I was happy with that. Now I have a new mailserver and what was installed nearly two years ago fails. My pal installed things in dovecot.conf this way: default_mail_env = maildir:~/Maildir but the new mail environment is too different to be readily understood. --At least for me!-- The "%u" variable is confusing; so in the "%h" ($HOME [?]) variable... Maybe Solr 1.4 is not production-ready yet and 1.3 is better. But it is enough for me, maybe I will return to it in next year. Now I will try to apply your changeset (fts-squat: Fixed searching multi-byte characters) to dovecot 1.2.4 (debian stable). If you think 1.2.8 is better, I will follow your recommendation.

[Dovecot] LDA: handling non-existent mail dirs

We have users existing in LDAP but not supposed to receive mail. We used to handle that (somewhat ungracefully) by simply not creating the top mail directory for those accounts. Since switching to Dovecots LDA, these non-existing dirs are considered temporary failures and so the junk mails pile up in postfix' queue Would it be possible for deliver to optionally treat this as a permanent error? I know the clean solution woud be checking for an LDAP attribute in postfix before even accepting the mail.

As reported in debian bug #554306 [1] dovecot fails to build with GNU binutils-gold or setting LDFLAGS=-Wl,--no-add-needed http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=554306 The problem is that liblber isn't explicitly declared as a dependence when dovecot is compiled with ldap support. The attached patch fixes this little error. [Dovecot] dovecot v 1.28 and virtual folders

I haven't been able to make this work. I've experimented with different settings in my dovecot.conf for hours. I have a simple single user ubuntu setup, nothing fancy and would just like to have a virtual "unread" folder of my main INBOX, for use with Squirrelmail So, with just this, all good... subfolders look like .INBOX.duplicates for example in the file system namespace private { separator = . location = maildir:~/Maildir inbox = yes } now, when I try to add a virtual namespace namespace private { subscriptions = yes list = yes inbox = no prefix = virtual. separator = . location = virtual:~/Maildir/virtual } ~/Maildir/virtual does exist in the filesystem, I can "subscribe" to virtual but if I try to create a sub folder of it I get ERROR: Could not complete request. Query: CREATE "virtual.test" Reason Given: [CANNOT] Can't create virtual mailboxes Squirrelmail is great because it has some nice IMAP testing tools, so for example, with my current dovecot config I can test the NAMESPACE command, is that the correct response? Request: A003 NAMESPACE Response: * NAMESPACE (("" ".")("virtual." ".")) NIL NIL Namespace completed. I'm sure the issue is a fundamental lack of understanding of a concept here ... I remember way back, i'd modified the dspam training plugin to compare mailbox names case-insensitively. that patch wasn't accepted. i didn't understand why since it was obviously correct and had no negative impact, at least i didn't think so. Now I've hit another case where case-insensitive mailbox names would be useful: +addressing. If I have a mailbox 'Ext' and I send mail to frank+Ext@, the LHS is lowercased to 'frank+ext' and the +extension delivery doesn't find the 'Ext' mailbox. If the +extension is going to be lowercased, then the mailbox names should be lowercased when looking for them. Or, since 'ext' and 'Ext' can co-exist, the +extension shouldn't be lowercased when looking for the mailbox. I prefer the former (lowercase everything), since it's unlikely a user would create both 'mailbox' and 'Mailbox', however I can envision plenty of times where users would try to use '+ext' yet create the '+Ext" mailbox and never be able to figure out why it doesn't work. I know the latter solution (case sensitive extensions and case sensitive mailboxes) is more correct but really it will be harder to debug user problems. -frank

[Dovecot] different views of a imap account

Hi, I've looked around a few times to see if I could figure the answer to this question but I think I may not know the right question to ask... The scenario I have is that I'm running dovecot, exim and procmail on one server (using maildir storage) and also have apache on another server. I can run squirrel mail, roundcube, etc. all on the web server and access all my email just fine. I can run outlook or thunderbird or other imap clients just fine too. I have some smart phones that support imap mail servers, but when I set them up to connect to my server, the client seems to have to sync up data on all the mailboxes (lots of headers to download). All I really want on my remote (phone based) imap clients is to view my inbox. I believe that the subscriptions are done globally in that every client sees the same subscriptions, so that doesn't seem like the way to narrow down what my phone imap clients see. Does what I'd like to do make sense? Is there a way to configure dovecot to support this? Could I just run two servers on the same machine at different ports to support this? I'd love to hear about how others have approached this or similar problems. I've seen a lite email client that can be run on an apache server that wap browsers can access to view mail. That works okay, but with phones having built in imap clients, that seems like a more streamlined way to go ;-) Thanks for you thoughts! -- Jay

[Dovecot] Max IMAP fodlers

Is there a way to limit the amount of maildir folders a user can have? Also is there is hard limit on the amount of folders dovecot can handle? I have a user who has over 3000 folder (including subfolders) that is having issues with delays in loading, moving, and deleting messages. Thanks in advance Jeff N.

Is rquota purposefully not present in the RPM at http://atrpms.net/dist/el5/dovecot/dovecot-1.2.8-0_103.el5.x86_64.rpm.html ? On a test machine I decided to give dovecot 1.2 a go with that RPM and everything went great except I was getting the following error in the dovecot log (and quota was not working): Dec 9 10:50:43 webmailtest2 dovecot: IMAP(auser) rip=127.0.0.1: quotactl(Q_GETQUOTA, nfsserver.geneseo.edu:/vol/email/users) failed: No such file or directory I had seen some messages on the mailing list talking about making sure you build with HAVE_RQUOTA defined at compile time. I wasn't able to determine if the RPM on the aforementioned page was simply missing the rquota code, but upon building the SRPM from the same place (http://atrpms.net/dist/el5/dovecot/, SRPM itself is http://dl.atrpms.net/all/dovecot-1.2.8-0_103.src.rpm) I saw HAVE_RQUOTA fly by and the rquota source files get built and linked, and when using those binaries rquota started working. I scanned the changelog for the binary RPM for something indicating that rquota support had been taken out but didn't see anything. Apologies if this is better sent to the package maintainer; I'm hoping he checks this list or someone has already run into this and can set me (and anyone else who may run in to this problem) straight. -David Warden

Hello, I can't see from the wiki if it's possible to log extra information with Deliver - such as the file name it's using to save the message in (Maildir). Currently I get the date, address, ID and folder, eg: Dec 09 12:07:06 deliver(my_address@invalid): Info: msgid=<302ce8b50912090406y634d1340j96ebd54466a2d08b(a)mail.gmail.com>: saved mail to INBOX.Lists.centos Thanks. -- Andrew

[Dovecot] quote warning not being triggered (yet again)

I'm using 1.2.6 with the managesieve patch and maildir++ quotas (via the maildirsite file). Again, I found that the quota warning is not bering triggered. Testing via: smtp-source -4 -f sender(a)charite.de -t recipient(a)charite.de -m 1 -l 1000000 -C 1 mail.charite.de:submission recipient(a)charite.de being a mailbox with a 10.0 MB limit. I have this: /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf: mail_location = maildir:/var/spool/dovecot/domains/%d/%n /usr/local/etc/dovecot-ldap.conf: user_attrs = mailQuotaSize=quota_rule=*:storage=%$M ,=uid=1002,=gid=1002,=home=/var/spool/dovecot/domains/%d/%n Two absolute paths seems to it is not right(but it works good...) [Dovecot] Different Formats Per User?

For migration possibilities, we're considering whether it's possible to have Dovecot run some users using standard Maildir format, while other users would be using filesystem (LAYOUT=fs) format? We could determine which one's users have, but is there a way to tell Dovecot this information, and is it even part of the Dovecot design to deal with this scenario? Thanks, Tony

[Dovecot] DELE before QUIT

Hi folks I'm new to Dovecot. I'm wonderng if it's a way that dovecot delete a message just after the DELE POP3 command and not just mark the message for deletion and wait until the QUIT command is received. The main reason is for slow and unstable links fetching mail this is madness. Any suggestions? David
