[Dovecot] pop3+leave messages on server
by Papp Tamas 24 Jan '10

24 Jan '10

hi All, I have a srange problem. Before dovecot there was a courier imap and it worked just fine. The client(s) are the same then before, so I think, this is an server side problem. I have a user with Outlook and he uses pop3 and leaves messages on server. Sometimes the messages get downloaded again, when he starts the outlook. Not all, but 7-9 hours back. uidl format is like it's suggested: pop3_uidl_format = %08Xu%08Xv Any idea, what's wrong and what I can do? Thank you very much, tamas

[Dovecot] strange behaviour with seen/unseen messages in virtual folders.
by Matthias Rieber 24 Jan '10

24 Jan '10

Hi, I've a virtual folder that contains unseen messages. When I mark the message and expunge the folder, the message should disappear. This works as expected in alpine. Alpine uses the following commands: 06000010 STORE 1 +Flags (\SEEN) 06000020 EXPUNGE Using roundcube mail, the message wont disappear, when I perform the same steps. RoundCube Mails sends: flg UID STORE 445 +FLAGS (\Seen) exp1 EXPUNGE But the message doesn't dissapear. But I can expunge it with alpine, as long as the folder contains one message. If it contains more messages, some or even all messages won't disappear. When I mark them as unseen/seen in alpine, I can expunge them with alpine. The expunge command send by roundcube mail never expunges any seen message in the unseen folder. Whether it was flagged as seen by alpine nor roundcube mail. kind regards, matthias

[Dovecot] Need simplest method for providing alternate mail location
by Stewart Dean 24 Jan '10

24 Jan '10

I am looking to migrate my DC V1.2 from mbox to maildir format....and want to do this in stages, user group by user group rather than in one horrendous fell swoop....since I'd rather fell things didn't happen. Since I'm running sendmail/procmail, I can change the ~/.procmailrc to change the writing of the INBOX, but the IMAP mail location access info is knottier when one wants to do things a bit at a time. Setting aside for now the matter of converting existing folders, I will be moving: = from a mbox setup with the INBOX in /var/spool/mail/<userid> and the folders in ~/mail = to both in ~/Maildir (unless someone has better ideas) It seems that one could: 1) Change the namespaces in the client...but this is not feasible, because it would means going out to all my 4000+ users desktop and modifying them. 2) Having some sort of db to tell DC it a mail_userdb extra field and override the mail_location in dovecot.conf 3) Perhaps waiting for DC v2.0 which will have this architected in. A) Is there any sense the v2.0 will be coming Real Soon Now and will fulfill #3? B) What's the simplest way to implement #2? I would really rather not install MySQL on my mail server and have all the overhead of installing and managing it when all I need it for is a temporary resource to tell DC where things are until the switchover is complete and Maildir is the default. Is it feasible to do this with an additional flat file in the /etc/passwd mode with some extra fields tacked on that is *only* used for mail location info? Or some other and simple way? My apologies if this is a Stupid Question............. -- ==== Once upon a time, the Internet was a friendly, neighbors-helping-neighbors small town, and no one locked their doors. Now it's like an apartment in Bed-Stuy: you need three heavy duty pick-proof locks, one of those braces that goes from the lock to the floor, and bars on the windows.... ==== Stewart Dean, Unix System Admin, Bard College, New York 12504 sdean(a)bard.edu voice: 845-758-7475, fax: 845-758-7035

[Dovecot] SpamAssassin and i;ascii-numeric comparator
by Julian Cowley 24 Jan '10

24 Jan '10

Hi Stephan, I noticed that you changed i;ascii-numeric comparator recently (<http://hg.rename-it.nl/dovecot-1.2-sieve/rev/17fb38aee85f>) to correct a small bug. I have an interest in this because I use the comparator to check for SpamAssassin scores. Before the fix, this was all that was necessary to check for scores above a certain value: header :value "ge" :comparator "i;ascii-numeric" "X-Spam-Score" "5" Since SpamAssassin includes negative scores and the i;ascii-numeric comparator doesn't recognize negative numbers, all negative scores are actually treated as positive infinity after the fix. Of course, this means mail which has a negative score then gets counted as spam. Now an additional test is necessary, something like this: allof(not header :matches "X-Spam-Score" "-*", header :value "ge" :comparator "i;ascii-numeric" "X-Spam-Score" "5") I thought I'd mention this because other people may get affected by this once 0.1.15 comes out. Here is a patch that makes further tests for the comparator between numeric and non-numeric values. Hope you can use it. -=- julian

[Dovecot] how to create maildir on local mail delivery
by Sebastian Logar 24 Jan '10

24 Jan '10

Hi! I am using Dovecot 1.0.10 with LDA/postfix option reading user data from ldap, but the problem would be nonexistent maildir. Connection with ldap should be fine since reading proper maildir folder. Is it possible to auto creating maildir folders even on received mail since the you can auto create when user login with mail_executable scripts as it's seen from configuration I am doing for pop3 and imap. [Dovecot] feature question: local delivery from SMTP
by Phil Howard 23 Jan '10

Does Dovecot really need a separate MTA for inbound mail? Or can it receive SMTP directly if there is no forwarding to do? What about spam/virus filtering in that case? -- Phil Howard KA9WGN - ka9wgn(a)gmail.com

[Dovecot] Mail process plans: multiple connections in a process + idle processes
by Timo Sirainen 23 Jan '10

23 Jan '10

Maybe for v2.1: imap and pop3 processes can currently handle multiple connections, but they're assigned pretty much randomly to processes. It would be better if it was possible to: a) Require that a process handles only a specific user's connections b) Require that a process handles only a specific UNIX UID's connections (e.g. if each domain has a separate UID) c) Prefer to put user's connections to same process, but don't require it. To do this, there needs to be a process between imap/pop3-login and imap/pop3. Let's call it imap/pop3-tracker process (or aggregator? or any suggestions?). This process accepts all connections coming from login processes when they've finished authenticating a connection. Internally it figures out if the connection should go to a new or an existing process. It keeps track of username -> { mail_process[], cookie (see idle processes below) } mail_process -> { unix_socket_fd, connection_count } So there's a connection to each mail process. This connection is used to send connection fds for the process to handle. It's also used to receive notifications when a connection is closed. The mail process sockets could also be used to communicate to a specific process. For example doveadm could use this in future to ask what a specific user or process is currently doing, by connecting to imap-tracker, which forwards the request to wanted process(es). The above isn't really anything new, just a more specific plan about what I had been thinking for a long time. A new and more interesting idea is to gather IDLEing imap connections under a few imap-idle processes: When a connection has been IDLEing for a few minutes (or something), and there's no special state in the connection (e.g. CONTEXT=SEARCH searches), the connection could be moved to a separate imap-idle process that simply waits for something to happen. When something does happen, it'll move the connection back to imap process, which restores state and continues. The idea would be to reduce the number of idling imap processes that are wasting memory. The state that needs to be saved and restored is: - selected mailbox name, GUID, UIDVALIDITY (for reliably selecting back the original mailbox, or reliably fail if it's gone) - flag: mailbox is EXAMINEd, not SELECTed - highest seen modseq - UIDs of \Recent messages - SEARCHRES extension: last saved SEARCH result - List of keywords that had been advertised in FLAGS/PERMANENTFLAGS reply to client. Or probably MD5 sum of it would be enough. If MD5 had changed, the list would be re-sent to client. - connection fd - paths that are being monitored with [id]notify/kqueue Connection is moved back when a) new command is received from connection fd, b) one of the monitored files changes. The connections are moved back via imap-tracker process, by sending the saved state along the request. For security there's a per-user security cookie (128 bits of randomness), which is sent to imap processes, and when restoring connection from imap-idle, the request must provide the correct cookie or imap-tracker fails the login. (Normally new post-login imap/pop3 connections can't be created without having authenticated first via dovecot-auth. They verify it.) So when connection comes back, imap process opens the mailbox based on saved information. If this fails for some reason (e.g. mailbox deleted), client gets disconnected. Next Dovecot gets a list of changes to mailbox since the saved modseq, and based on that sends the missing FETCH, EXPUNGE, EXISTS and RECENT events. Again if it somehow fails, the client gets disconnected. At least initially this would only be done for connections that are running IDLE command, because non-IDLE connections are a lot more difficult to restore to their original state. This is mainly because if a message gets expunged, it's still visible to the connection until it issues a command that allows sending EXPUNGE event. To handle that, there would have to be code that allows building a view of mailbox where there are some expunged messages. Also it can be difficult to find out the expunged messages' flags, unless they're also part of the saved state.

[Dovecot] format of file dict
by Frank Cusack 22 Jan '10

22 Jan '10

For shared (between users) mailboxes, I am using a file dict. plugin { acl_shared_dict = file:/etc/dovecot/acl_shared_dict/shared.db } What is the format of this file? I would like to manage it directly rather than have SETACL update it. I see lines which describe a sharing entry (the format of those looks obvious) but also lines with just a '1'. Do I just need to separate entries by lines with just '1' in them? -frank

[Dovecot] Thinderbird+delete+move to Trash folder
by Papp Tamás 22 Jan '10

22 Jan '10

hi All, I have a problem, which makes me headache. I can't find out, what is the problem. I have a mail szerver, which works just fine as expected, TB move messages to trash folder after I delete it, and they are moved. I have an other server. If I delete a message, it doesn't move to the Trash folder. As deleted_to_trash plugin is installed, if I only mark messages as deleted, they are moved to thee Trash folder and also with Outlook works well. It's like when a messages is deleted from TB, the message get moved to the Trash folder, and it's expunged(?) at the same time. Is it possible? Could you help me? The system is Ubuntu 9.04 with docecot 1.2.5-0~auto+0 from http://xi.rename-it.nl/debian/, but builded by myself for x86_64. Thank you, tamas

[Dovecot] Modifying the underlying maildir externally (webmail, replication)
by Attila Nagy 22 Jan '10

22 Jan '10

Hello, I have a setup where there are multiple maildir users, one of them being the pop/imap server itself, the others are for example a maildir capable webmail and message replication. I would like to evaluate Dovecot, but I wonder how would its binary indexes and logs fit into this picture. After running through http://wiki.dovecot.org/IndexFiles I'm not sure how well would Dovecot work with other programs modifying the maildirs (adding, deleting, moving messages, folders etc). The "Main index" section says "The index file is synchronized against mailbox only if the syncing information changes.", where syncing information consists or cur and new directories' timestamps. Does that mean I am safe there? The cache file is hopefully just a cache, so it won't contain information from messages which are inserted or moved by an external program, and I assume Dovecot fetches the message lists and other information from the main index, which seems to be OK. The transaction log is for the main index, so if the latter is OK, the former should be OK too. http://wiki.dovecot.org/MailboxFormat/Maildir talks about MUAs and there nothing scary can be found, except for some temporary conditions, where the changes won't propagate to Dovecot in real time, but it's OK. Are the above right, and can Dovecot use its indexes and caches safely with others using the same maildirs? Thanks,

[Dovecot] Files Moving From /New to /Cur
by Tony Rutherford 22 Jan '10

22 Jan '10

Using Dovecot 1.2-9 with Maildir and layout=FS. We have our own delivery pushing messages to the /new and then /cur folder eventually. When I have an IMAP client attached, there is apparently some sort of race going on. I believe that Dovecot is moving files from /new to /cur (and renaming them) before our own delivery gets the job done. This is causing a problem for us. Is there a way to disable this in Dovecot? I have the LDA section commented out of the config file..so I don't think that's in play. Bottom line is that I don't want Dovecot to move any files around whether an IMAP client is attached or not (except for handling the IMAP COPY/APPEND). Regards, Tony

Just wanted to share the bad news: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=541337 It seems that Dovecot is really showing the Mozilla Thunderbird team how to read and use an RFC ;-) -- Christian Rohmann Content Delivery Server u. [Dovecot] Conditionally use a sieve script with deliver?
by Kārlis Repsons 22 Jan '10

22 Jan '10

I found a post in this list [0], which says sieve scripts can be used to deliver mail as read. However, can it be done somehow conditionally, I mean, with a direct or indirect switch for deliver? For a nonexistent example, it would be simply < | deliver -m path/to/maildir -r > or maybe an environment variable could be exported to deliver sieve and checked there? (Still not sure if sieve can replace maildrop in my case, however, using it with dovecot creates various problems with interoperability; but perhaps I can just add those imap4flags like "\\seen" myself to the message with maildrop and avoid mess with sieve at all?) [Dovecot] IDLE timing issue - dovecot or fetchmail issue?
by Matt Doran 22 Jan '10

22 Jan '10

Hi guys, Thanks for the great product. We've used dovecot for ages as our internal mail server and it works great! I've recently started using fetchmail 6.3.9 (with IDLE enabled) to download mail from our ISP (Pair networks). The ISP is running Dovecot 1.1.16. I am unable to get the info about the dovecot config at this time. The IDLE support in fetchmail allows us to deliver mail near instantaneously without the need to poll (which is what we did previously using POP3). However I've noticed an issue where if 2 mails are delivered in quick succession fetchmail will only download the first email, and the second will not download. If I then send in another test email this triggers the download of 2 emails (the original that wasn't downloaded and the test email). Now I'm wondering whether the issue lies with Dovecot (e.g. a timing issue), or is it fetchmail that isn't implementing the IDLE/download properly. I've attached the output of a fetchmail session showing this problem in action (I've added some annotations to this file starting with >>>>>). The sequence of events are: * Start fetchmail with IDLE enabled * Send 2 emails in quick succession. * Dovecot notifies of the new message * Fetchmail downloads the message * Fetchmail initiates a new IDLE * Then nothing more is delivered. :( * I then send another email, which triggers the 2 to download. I don't know enough about IMAP to understand whether the problem lies with Dovecot or Fetchmail. Hopefully an IMAP expert will be able to see from the attached IMAP session. [Dovecot] IMAP only for some users or via webmail
by Federico Tomasczik 22 Jan '10

22 Jan '10

Hello! First, sorry for my English... I'm a newbie with Dovecot and I have some questions, I'm testing Dovecot 1.1.11 in a virtual machine. I wish in the future, migrate this to a real server. Ok, but i need this: 1) A group of users can use IMAP or POP3. 2) The others, only can use POP3. But, this users can use IMAP only with a webmail (the webmail is in the same server that Dovecot) It is possible? How? Thanks! Federico Ch. Tomasczik

[Dovecot] nologin in auth proto version 1.1
by Kirill Miazine 21 Jan '10

21 Jan '10

I notice that the nologin parameter for the AUTH command is gone in version 1.1 of Dovecot Authentication Protocol. nologin was added in 1.1, so that authentication client could indicate that there will be no subsequent master requests to retrieve user info. Could we have nologin back please? Kirill

[Dovecot] Fastest restart of dovecot after upgrade: HOW?:
by Ralf Hildebrandt 21 Jan '10

21 Jan '10

I'm running dovecot under runit: #!/bin/sh echo '/var/core/%p' > /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern ulimit -n 8096 ulimit -c unlimited exec /usr/local/sbin/dovecot -F (that way, together with incron, I can automatically generate the coredumps I'm posting all the time) If I apply a patch and recompile, what is the fastest way of restarting dovecot? Which part of the process structure can be killed and takes all it's children with it? ├─runsvdir─┬─runsv───ntpd │ ├─runsv─┬─dovecot─┬─2*[dovecot-auth] │ │ │ ├─1203*[imap] │ │ │ ├─64*[imap-login] │ │ │ ├─64*[managesieve-log] │ │ │ └─64*[pop3-login] │ │ └─svlogd killall dovecot? Is that guaranteed to wipe out ALL child processes as well? I had to use (at least in the past): sv d /var/service/dovecot killall dovecot killall -9 imap-login ps auxwww|grep dovecot to make sure everything would be dead... -- Ralf Hildebrandt Geschäftsbereich IT | Abteilung Netzwerk Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin Campus Benjamin Franklin Hindenburgdamm 30 | D-12203 Berlin Tel. +49 30 450 570 155 | Fax: +49 30 450 570 962 ralf.hildebrandt(a)charite.de | http://www.charite.de

[Dovecot] Maildir and IMAP keywords
by Per-Erik Persson 21 Jan '10

21 Jan '10

When a user in thunderbird toggles some flags like junk, spam or something similar dovecot appends these flags form a-z to the end of the file in maildir. I have another application that also access the maildirs which gets really upset with these flags and ignore those emails. Are there any other way for dovecot to store these flags to make it compatible with other softwares?

[Dovecot] Migration from Courier to dovecot
by Werner Detter 21 Jan '10

21 Jan '10

hi list, I've just registered to the list, so please be tolerant ;) I'm currently in the process of planning the migration from courier to dovecot as POP/IMAP-Server. I'm migration from Courier 0.58 (Debian-Etch-packages) to Dovecot 1.1.13 (Debian Lenny Backport). The conversion of the Mailbox from Courier to Dovecot will be done with "courier-dovecot-migrate.pl"-script[1], which works fine. However after running "courier-dovecot-migrate.pl" the Courier-Files still remain in the Maildir. Can i just delete those Courier-specific-files or does dovecot need them somehow (do you normally get rid of these after conversion)? It's about these files: courierimapacl courierimapsubscribed courierimapuiddb courierpop3dsizelist And those directories: courierimaphieracl courierimaphieracl Can i simply delete those with "find" ? Furthermore: is it possible to convert back from Dovecot-Format to Courier-Format? Thanks in advance, Werner [1] http://www.dovecot.org/tools/courier-dovecot-migrate.pl

[Dovecot] MUA notifications on new mail in a new folder?
by Kārlis Repsons 20 Jan '10

20 Jan '10

If deliver gets run with a non-root userid like this: < | deliver -m path/to/NEWmaildir >, I wonder, is a connected IMAP MUA automatically notified, that the new message has arrived in the new folder? As I see from some experiments with Thunderbird, it has no problems with immediate notifications of new mail in previously existing folders, however, it has problems with the case of new folder.

[Dovecot] outlook 2007 can't see public folders more than 1 deep
by Frank Cusack 20 Jan '10

20 Jan '10

dovecot-1.2.9 I have a public folder using ACLs to determine who can access it. namespace public { separator = / prefix = shared/ location = maildir:/var/maildir/shared subscriptions = no } Outlook 2007 can't see any folders except at the top level. It can create them just fine, but can't see them after quit and restart. For example, I can create the folder shared/foo/bar but on restart outlook only sees foo as a folder without subfolders (no + to expand it) and doesn't see bar anymore. In fact I can delete the folder foo in outlook and then BOTH .foo and .foo.bar directories are removed on the server. When you click on foo, the error message in the mail pane is "Cannot display the folder. The folder 'foo' cannot contain items. This is most likely a limitation of your IMAP server. In order to create a folder that can contain items, be sure not to append '/' to its name as you create it." -frank

[Dovecot] md5_verify(...): Not a valid MD5-CRYPT or PLAIN-MD5 password
by BaQs 20 Jan '10

20 Jan '10

'afternoon list! I use mysql as userdb, which contains two type of password schemes: DES and MD5-CRYPT. I read there : http://wiki.dovecot.org/Authentication/PasswordSchemes that both are supported by dovecot. Unfortunately, dovecot keeps saying: Not a valid MD5-CRYPT or PLAIN-MD5 password when looking for a user with DES encrypted password. Is dovecot able to recognize password scheme, or do I have to do something else ? I can't add {DES} to DES passwords, as this database is used with many other softwares. Thanks a lot for your help Pierre

[Dovecot] Two different issues with dovecot 1.1.13
by Stuart Rowan 20 Jan '10

20 Jan '10

Hi Timo, I'm using Debian backports.org dovecot-imapd, 1:1.1.13-2~bpo50+1. I've got two different issues, a reoccurring, seemingly harmless one about "Corrupted index cache file" (boring.txt) and one that went bonkers over the least few days (bt.txt) causing much spamming of the logs. I've made bt.txt stop happening by just rm'ing dovecot.index* : find Maildir/ -type f -name 'dovecot.index*' -print0 | xargs -0r rm ... which I realise may not be the most helpful thing to have done from your point of view. Anyway I just wanted to let you know about both of these. If one or both are already known about or already fixed by a later version of Dovecot, great and sorry for the noise! If not, and you want any more information etc., let me know. Many thanks, Stu. dovecot: 2009-07-28 10:23:16 Error: IMAP(strr): Corrupted index cache file /home/local/strr/Maildir/dovecot.index.cache: record continues outside its allocated size dovecot: 2009-07-28 10:23:56 Error: IMAP(strr): Corrupted index cache file /home/local/strr/Maildir/dovecot.index.cache: record continues outside its allocated size dovecot: 2009-07-28 08:05:54 Panic: IMAP(strr): file index-mail-headers.c: line 77 (index_mail_parse_header_finish): assertion failed: ((match[match_idx] & HEADER_MAT CH_FLAG_FOUND) == 0) dovecot: 2009-07-28 08:05:54 Error: IMAP(strr): Raw backtrace: imap [0x48dbf2] -> imap [0x48dc73] -> imap [0x48d346] -> imap(index_mail_parse_header+0x617) [0x4545f7] -> imap [0x483284] -> imap [0x483478] -> imap(i_stream_read+0x2c) [0x491d7c] -> imap(i_stream_read_data+0x46) [0x491f16] -> imap(message_get_body_size+0x108) [0x4885 a8] -> imap [0x4226c3] -> imap(imap_fetch+0x162) [0x420852] -> imap(cmd_fetch+0x23c) [0x41a27c] -> imap [0x41e46c] -> imap [0x41e51d] -> imap [0x41eb25] -> imap(clien t_input+0x63) [0x41efd3] -> imap(io_loop_handler_run+0xcb) [0x49515b] -> imap(io_loop_run+0x18) [0x4945c8] -> imap(main+0x3da) [0x426bea] -> /lib/libc.so.6(__libc_sta rt_main+0xe6) [0x7f0e851941a6] -> imap [0x418859] dovecot: 2009-07-28 08:05:54 Error: child 20007 (imap) killed with signal 6 (core dumps disabled) dovecot: 2009-07-28 08:05:56 Panic: IMAP(strr): file index-mail-headers.c: line 77 (index_mail_parse_header_finish): assertion failed: ((match[match_idx] & HEADER_MAT CH_FLAG_FOUND) == 0) dovecot: 2009-07-28 08:05:56 Error: IMAP(strr): Raw backtrace: imap [0x48dbf2] -> imap [0x48dc73] -> imap [0x48d346] -> imap(index_mail_parse_header+0x617) [0x4545f7] -> imap [0x483284] -> imap [0x483478] -> imap(i_stream_read+0x2c) [0x491d7c] -> imap(i_stream_read_data+0x46) [0x491f16] -> imap(message_get_body_size+0x108) [0x4885 a8] -> imap [0x4226c3] -> imap(imap_fetch+0x162) [0x420852] -> imap(cmd_fetch+0x23c) [0x41a27c] -> imap [0x41e46c] -> imap [0x41e51d] -> imap [0x41eb25] -> imap(clien t_input+0x63) [0x41efd3] -> imap(io_loop_handler_run+0xcb) [0x49515b] -> imap(io_loop_run+0x18) [0x4945c8] -> imap(main+0x3da) [0x426bea] -> /lib/libc.so.6(__libc_sta rt_main+0xe6) [0x7f2edf08b1a6] -> imap [0x418859] dovecot: 2009-07-28 08:05:56 Error: child 20984 (imap) killed with signal 6 (core dumps disabled)

[Dovecot] Autobuilder packages for Debian stable/i386 now available
by Stephan Bosch 20 Jan '10

20 Jan '10

Hi, A few days back I started the first automated slave builder that produces bleeding edge Debian stable packages for Dovecot v1.2 and v2.0. It uses the source packages already provided by the automated master repository (which builds binary packages for Debian testing), so that the version numbers and content are equal throughout all Debian releases. The repository is available as follows: deb http://xi.rename-it.nl/debian/ stable-auto/dovecot-1.2 main Or, for Dovecot v2.0: deb http://xi.rename-it.nl/debian/ stable-auto/dovecot-2.0 main Read this for more information: http://wiki.dovecot.org/PrebuiltBinaries#Automatically_Built_Packages I hope to add amd64 binary support soon. Re: [Dovecot] Oracle SQL driver

Your commit appears to ignore errors and just commit everything > that goes through? Also since nothing is actually sent before commit(), > your rollback() shouldn't need to send ROLLBACK. You right. I've corrected the transaction handling mechanism. The only thing I couldn't understand: why rollback() shouldn't need to make real ROLLBACK? In case when whole transaction was failed succeded statements will remain uncommited. Then they will be commited later on next successful transaction. May be ROLLBACK is still needed? > The "VARCHAR sqltext[2048]" seems like an unnecessary restriction on the > query length. Wasn't there a way to do this without the limit? Or in AFAIK there is no possibility to use C types in PREPARE statement. Also Oracle cannot handle unsized VARCHARs. I've increased VARCHAR size to 65535. > test_connection() seems unnecessary. Right you are. > Couldn't driver_oracle_generate_name() be simply: > static unsigned int counter = 0; > return i_strdup_printf("ORACONN_%x", ++counter); =) Right. > driver_oracle_escape_string() really should be escaping the string. I made this function to replace single quote in string with two single quotes. IMHO this should be enough. How do you think? > Kind of annoying that each query needs a cursor, even though nearly all > queries are expected to return only a single row, but I guess that can't > be helped with the current API.. Yes. There are no other ways to work with untyped statements in OCI. But Oracle claims that all these statements shouldn't produce significant performance impact. The new version attached.

Re: [Dovecot] How can I configure dovecot as gmail imap proxy
by Supratik Goswami 20 Jan '10

20 Jan '10

Here the proxy server should authenticate the user. If the user is in the list of authenticated users then dovecot will allow to connect to imap.gmail.com. Consider a scenario where a client tries to read his mailbox from imap.gmail.com:993. Client executes the command "mutt -f imaps://imap.gmail.com", the request is first authenticated at the proxy server. If the request is coming from a valid user, dovecot will allow to connect to imap.gmail.com and fetch mails for that user. Can you please help me with the steps to configure the server. Warm Regards Supratik

[Dovecot] LDA and POP3/IMAP user_query
by Michael 20 Jan '10

20 Jan '10

How do I get IMAP+POP3 vs. LDA to use different user_query statements? The problem is that the input fields are different. IMAP/POP3 is an email address LDA is a username I have written a long statement to try and cater for both however it still only works 99% of the time, and the remaining 1% fails. The 1% that fails sees the mail being delivered to the wrong mbox. In this particular case the same client owned both mboxes so it was ok, but if this had not been the case things could have gotten real embarrassing. Think of the following: abcwidgets(a)theirdomain.tld mailuser1 mailuser1(a)adomain.tld mailuser2 Now when using the Postfix LDA, email for each address is properly delivered to the specified mbox, however in this case because their is a matching name for the mbox and the email address lefthand content, the compound SQL query returns both results and the LDA will use the first one, which in this case was the wrong one. This is the query used: user_query = \ SELECT mailboxes.username AS user, mailboxes.uid, mailboxes.gid, \ concat('*:storage=',mailquota,'M') AS quota_rule \ FROM mailboxes JOIN accounts ON accounts.username = mailboxes.username \ WHERE ((mailboxes.username = '%n' AND accounts.active='1') || \ (mailboxes.email = '%u' AND mailboxes.active='1' AND accounts.active='1') || \ (mailboxes.email = CONCAT('@','%d') AND mailboxes.active='1' \ AND (SELECT COUNT(email) FROM mailboxes WHERE email='%u') = '0')) which additionally caters for the few catch alls our users have. I think this is a massive oversight in the design of Dovecot to use one query to for 2 separate and distinct processes, that both use different parameters. From what I can tell it seems to assume that a mail system will always use username@domain addresses, and never anything more arbitrary. Has anyone found a way around this? Michael

[Dovecot] shared namespaces with common prefix prefix
by Frank Cusack 19 Jan '10

19 Jan '10

Can shared/public namespaces' prefixes have a common prefix? :) namespace public { separator = / prefix = zz/shared/ location = maildir:/var/maildir/shared:INDEX=/var/maildir/%n/shared subscriptions = no } # to share other employees mailboxes (term'd or admin access) namespace shared { separator = / prefix = zz/shared/%%u/ location = maildir:/var/maildir/%%n:INDEX=/var/maildir/users/%%u subscriptions = no list = children } Since I added the shared namespace, I can no longer access the public namespace. The folders show up but then trying to access one gets the error that the mailbox doesn't exist. If they can't have a common part of the prefix, is that an IMAP limitation or could dovecot conceivably handle it? -frank

[Dovecot] Log the virtual email address and not the local account - dovecot 1.2.2 w/ MySQL
by Bill 19 Jan '10

19 Jan '10

I recently started using dovecot and have it working well but I have one item I haven't been able to find an answer for. I am using MySQL with Dovecot for authentication with my virtual email customers. When the user logs in and checks email a log entry is recorded. Instead of the email address (bob(a)bob.net) being logged it records the local account (vemail101) in the POP3 log. How can I get dovecot to reflect the email address that the customer logged in with instead of the local account? Thx, Bill

[Dovecot] fts squat non-english search for 2 words
by vuser1＠test123.ru 19 Jan '10

19 Jan '10

Hello, It looks I encoutered a bug or misconfiguration. fts_squat search for subject and body works excellent for English mails. For non-English (in particular, Russian) it works only when query consists of 1 word. Phrases - 2 and more words - always returns nothing. Example: search for "planet" ("планета") returns results, search for "Earth" ("Земля") also returns results, but "planet Earth" ("планета Земля") returns nothing. But there are emails having exact phrase "planet Earth". This problem occurs only for non-English queries, both for search in subject and in email body. I tried web-mail Horde 3.2 and Thunderbird. I turned fts plugin off and it correctly finds phrases with 2 and more russian words! So problem is squat. Is it a bug or known config issue? [Dovecot] virtual namespace question
by Josephus 19 Jan '10

19 Jan '10

Hi, I'm wondering if it is possible to create a virtual namespace on a prefix other than "virtual/". My goal is to mix IMAP folders with virtual folders on the same folder level (prefix = ""). mail_location = maildir:/data/mail/%d/%u/ # Virtual namespace private { prefix = separator = / location = virtual:/data/mail/%d/%u/virtual } # Default namespace private { separator = / prefix = inbox = yes } With this configuration the folders show up on the same level, but I'm unable to subscribe to them. When I change the prefix back to "virtual/" it works, but folders are still gruoped under "virtual". Funny thing is, when I use a prefix something like "vfolder/", the root folder is no longer greyed out in my MUA (TB3), and I get a "Mailbox doesn't exist: vfolder" error msg if I click on it. [Dovecot] Best way of dealing with Case-Sensitive Issues in Dovecot
by Mario Antonio 19 Jan '10

19 Jan '10

In order to deal with case-sensitive issues, I am thinking to use the variable %L (adding it to my current configs --as suggested before by other users in this list) in the configuration files in this way: In Dovecot.conf: mail_location = maildir:/vmail/%Ld/%Ln/Maildir:INDEX=/indexes/%Ld/%Ln auth default: username_format: %Lu passdb: driver: sql args: /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf userdb: driver: sql args: /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf userdb: driver: static args: uid=5000 gid=5000 home=/vmail/%Ld/%Ln allow_all_users=yes In dovecot-sql.conf: password_query = select concat(virtual_users.user, '@', virtual_domains.name) AS user, virtual_users.password as password \ from virtual_users LEFT JOIN virtual_domains ON virtual_users.domain_id=virtual_domains.id \ where virtual_users.user='%Ln' and virtual_domains.name='%Ld' and virtual_users.status = 1 and virtual_domains.status = 1; user_query = SELECT 5000 AS uid,5000 AS gid,'/vmail/%Ld/%Ln' as home, \ concat('*:storage= ', virtual_users.quota_kb) AS quota_rule \ from virtual_users LEFT JOIN virtual_domains ON virtual_users.domain_id=virtual_domains.id \ where virtual_users.user='%Ln' and virtual_domains.name='%Ld' Is this the correct way of assuring lowercase use all over the place? Can I use the variable %L in where sql statements? Regards, Mario Antonio

[Dovecot] expire plugin doesn't find mail location
by Roland Rosenfeld 19 Jan '10

19 Jan '10

Hi! After searching for hours now, I give up and have to ask here. I try to use the expire plugin but it always tries to expire my mails instead of the mails of the user. I read about the "Mail location setting problem (v1.1-v1.2) and configured a "mail" extra field in the userdb, but that doesn't have the effect I want. I have not idea, what I could try out more, so I ask here. [Dovecot] Dovecot-deliver sometimes fails when message set to discard via sieve
by Steve Wagner 19 Jan '10

19 Jan '10

Hi, sometimes mails that i discard via sieve gets delivered to my inbox and i can not figure out why. So i hope you can give me a hint. My setup is: I use a self compiled dovecot 1.2.4 with installed sieve and managesieve plugin. Incoming mails a processed by Postfix and the delivered to Procmail. Procmail invokes Spamassassin and discard all mails marked as spam. The other mails are passed to Dovecot deliver this way: :0 w | /opt/dovecot/libexec/dovecot/deliver For moving mails to subdirectorys this works always, but not for mails that are discard via Sieve. Examples are: if header :contains "List-Id" "git.vger.kernel.org" { if header :contains "Subject" "[ANNOUNCE]" { fileinto "Announce"; stop; } if header :contains "Subject" "[ANN]" { fileinto "Announce"; stop; } if header :contains "Subject" "[PATCH" { discard; stop; } fileinto "Lists.Git"; stop; } or if header :contains "Organization" "web.de" { discard; stop; } This often works, but sometimes it fails. Procmail reports then that deliver reported an error (but not which) and delivers them to my inbox. There are also no message in dovecots or dovecot delivers log file. Dose anybody have an idea? Steve

Hi all, is there some easy way to inform Dovecot about a new delivery, which has happened after postfix invoked maildrop, so the index files would be updated?

[Dovecot] Socket permission 432/384 and dovecot.conf
by Seba 19 Jan '10

19 Jan '10

Sorry for that question but: when you set in dovecot.conf this for example: socket listen { client { path = /var/spool/postfix/private/auth mode = 0660 user = postfix group = postfix } } and you run "dovecot -n" you'll see client: path: /var/spool/postfix/private/auth mode: 432 I'm wondering about the mode "432" - how is this value calculated? Same for the auth/master socket socket - the value ist "384" and in dovecot.conf it's 0600. Thanks for any info. Seba

[Dovecot] Dovecot Proxy and environment variables
by BaQs 19 Jan '10

19 Jan '10

Dear list, First of all, I am French so excuse my bad english. I am currently using dovecot proxy feature, using sql backend. I "proxy" the imap/pop requests to another server, let's say server2. On server2, I use a script to keep up to date a "pop before smtp auth" database. I used mail_executable = /path/to/this/script.sh ... My problem is: the $IP environment variable on server2 is the proxy's IP. How could I give a variable from proxy to server2, or simply get the real client public IP ? Thanks a lot in advance for your answers Pierre. PS: let me also thank very much dovecot developers and community !

[Dovecot] No filelocking at "shared-mailboxes" dictionary?
by Peer Heinlein 19 Jan '10

19 Jan '10

Using imapsync I changed many ACLs on many accounts simultaneously in four concurrent IMAP-sessions. I started with an empty file "shared-mailboxes". But after the sync the file "shared-mailboxes" has been crashed. I found broken lines and I'm missing some entrys. Is it possible that there's no filelocking on that file? I used the ext3 filesystem. [Dovecot] Upgrade path questions
by Thomas M Goerger 18 Jan '10

18 Jan '10

Hi, We are currently running Dovecot v1.1.6 on our servers, and are contemplating an upgrade to 1.2, or 2.0 soon. We are wondering how many organizations are still running a 1.1 version of Dovecot, and if anyone has any thoughts on this transition. Have you upgraded from 1.1 to 1.2? What are your experiences with this? Have you upgraded from 1.1 to 2.0 directly? What are your experiences this way? We are also running an environment with both mbox and maildir formats. How many of you are running similarly, or are running solely maildir or mbox? We're just looking to gather information going forward, and anything you might be able to contribute would be very helpful. Thanks! ************************************************************************* * Tom Goerger - Email/Unix System Administrator * * * * University of Minnesota Email: tmg(a)umn.edu * * Operations, Infrastructure and Architecture Phone: 4-5804 * * Internet Services Office: 626J WBOB * * * *************************************************************************

[Dovecot] how-to use dsync to do a 2 ways replication ?
by Eric Belhomme 18 Jan '10

Hi, I want to set-up two dovecot imap servers, with active-active replicated maildirs. The goal is to have a hosted public server on Internet, and a private server on my LAN to speed-up local connections. So I compiled dovecot 2.0 beta 1 in order to use dsync utility... Actually my config is pretty simple as I just want to setup a proof of concept before going ahead in this way : (Both servers are Debian Lenny with excatly the same config) mail0:~# /usr/local/dovecot2/sbin/dovecot -n # 2.0.beta1: /etc/dovecot2/dovecot/dovecot.conf # OS: Linux 2.6.26-2-686 i686 Debian 5.0.3 auth_debug = yes auth_verbose = yes login_trusted_networks = 172.16.64.0/18 mail_location = maildir:%h passdb { args = /etc/dovecot/userpasswd deny = no driver = passwd-file } postmaster_address = postmaster(a)example.com service pop3-login { inet_listener { port = 110 } inet_listener { port = 995 ssl = yes } } service imap-login { inet_listener { port = 143 } inet_listener { port = 993 ssl = yes } } ssl_cert = </etc/ssl/certs/dovecot.pem ssl_key = </etc/ssl/private/dovecot.pem userdb { driver = prefetch } userdb { args = /etc/dovecot/userpasswd driver = passwd-file } I logged on the first server with an IMAP client then I copied many email through IMAP, then I launched dsync as root : /usr/local/dovecot2/bin/dsync -v mirror 'ssh eole.it.fr.eve /usr/local/dovecot2/bin/dsync' root(a)eole.it.fr.eve's password: dsync-local(root): Error: Can't create mailbox ssh: Mailbox already exists dsync-local(root): Error: Can't create mailbox aptitude: Mailbox already exists dsync-local(root): Error: Can't create mailbox debtags: Mailbox already exists dsync-local(root): Info: debtags: only in source dsync-local(root): Info: aptitude: only in source dsync-local(root): Info: ssh: only in source dsync-local(root): Info: ssh: only in dest dsync-local(root): Info: aptitude: only in dest dsync-local(root): Info: debtags: only in dest dsync-local(root): Error: Mailbox ssh changed its GUID (cdfc9a2d85154e4b47180000b31a5865 -> 541e9f2850234e4b3a2b0000d0cf7273) dsync-local(root): Error: msg iteration failed: Couldn't open mailbox dsync-remote(root): Error: Can't create mailbox debtags: Mailbox already exists dsync-remote(root): Error: Can't create mailbox aptitude: Mailbox already exists dsync-remote(root): Error: Can't create mailbox ssh: Mailbox already exists dsync-remote(root): Error: Mailbox debtags changed its GUID (501e9f2850234e4b3a2b0000d0cf7273 -> d1fc9a2d85154e4b47180000b31a5865) dsync-remote(root): Error: msg iteration failed: Couldn't open mailbox dsync-remote(root): Error: command MSG-LIST failed dsync-local(root): Error: Mailbox ssh changed its GUID (cdfc9a2d85154e4b47180000b31a5865 -> 541e9f2850234e4b3a2b0000d0cf7273) dsync-local(root): Error: Mailbox aptitude changed its GUID (cffc9a2d85154e4b47180000b31a5865 -> 521e9f2850234e4b3a2b0000d0cf7273) dsync-local(root): Error: Mailbox debtags changed its GUID (d1fc9a2d85154e4b47180000b31a5865 -> 501e9f2850234e4b3a2b0000d0cf7273) dsync-local(root): Error: Mailbox ssh changed its GUID (cdfc9a2d85154e4b47180000b31a5865 -> 541e9f2850234e4b3a2b0000d0cf7273) dsync-local(root): Error: Mailbox aptitude changed its GUID (cffc9a2d85154e4b47180000b31a5865 -> 521e9f2850234e4b3a2b0000d0cf7273) dsync-local(root): Error: Mailbox debtags changed its GUID (d1fc9a2d85154e4b47180000b31a5865 -> 501e9f2850234e4b3a2b0000d0cf7273) mail0:~# dsync-remote(root): Error: Mailbox debtags changed its GUID (501e9f2850234e4b3a2b0000d0cf7273 -> d1fc9a2d85154e4b47180000b31a5865) dsync-remote(root): Error: Mailbox aptitude changed its GUID (521e9f2850234e4b3a2b0000d0cf7273 -> cffc9a2d85154e4b47180000b31a5865) dsync-remote(root): Error: Mailbox ssh changed its GUID (541e9f2850234e4b3a2b0000d0cf7273 -> cdfc9a2d85154e4b47180000b31a5865) dsync-remote(root): Error: Mailbox debtags changed its GUID (501e9f2850234e4b3a2b0000d0cf7273 -> d1fc9a2d85154e4b47180000b31a5865) dsync-remote(root): Error: Mailbox aptitude changed its GUID (521e9f2850234e4b3a2b0000d0cf7273 -> cffc9a2d85154e4b47180000b31a5865) dsync-remote(root): Error: Mailbox ssh changed its GUID (541e9f2850234e4b3a2b0000d0cf7273 -> cdfc9a2d85154e4b47180000b31a5865) It seems dsync tries to use my system user database instead of the /etc/dovecot/userpasswd file ! [Dovecot] Adding support for a new storage format - plugin?
by Brad Hards 18 Jan '10

18 Jan '10

Hi, I've spent a little bit of time looking at the dovecot source (from the unstable 2.0 development tree), and I think I'm starting to get it together... Background: I'm interested in dovecot to provide IMAP access to an existing database backed server store (http://www.openchange.org for more details). The goal is to provide parallel access using either IMAP or the exchange RPC protocol. If I understand this stuff: * I can potentially provide access to the store using a plugin. It looks like the virtual mailbox plugin is a potential example here. * I may need to also provide an authentication plugin (not sure whether I can just re-use the existing ldap backend - quite possibly a useful option in my scenario) * I probably can't use the existing SQL code, since it uses its own schema. * I may need to provide some locking to ensure things are always in a consistent state for both IMAP and exchange RPC. Comments? Suggestions? Brad

[Dovecot] listen to imap*s* on multiple ports?
by Frank Cusack 17 Jan '10

17 Jan '10

<http://wiki.dovecot.org/QuestionsAndAnswers#Is_it_possible_to_have_Dovecot_…> is out of date. How can I listen to ssl-wrapped IMAP on multiple ports? I need to listen on both 993 (for some stupid clients I have to support that can't do START TLS) and 80 (to get past L3/L4 firewalls). I'd like to do it in dovecot rather than use nc, ipfilter or whatever. -frank

[Dovecot] handling filename of compressed messages
by Leonardo Rodrigues 17 Jan '10

17 Jan '10

i'm running dovecot 1.2.9 and, among other things, i have the zlib plugin enabled. A shell script runs once a day to compresses all not still compressed files on the users maildirs. so far so good, it works fine, there's no problem on that. what i think is not happening 100% correctly is the following: 1) user receives a message 2) BEFORE the compress routine runs, filename is: new/1263436052.V6814I43300b4M146002.correio.domain.com.br,S=238207 3) AFTER the compress routine, filename is now: new/1263436052.V6814I43300b4M146002.correio.domain.com.br,S=238207.gz 4) user check his mail .... and now the filename is cur/1263436052.V6814I43300b4M146002.correio.domain.com.br,S=238207.gz:2,S 5) user replies that mail .... and now the filename is cur/1263436052.V6814I43300b4M146002.correio.domain.com.br,S=238207.gz:2,RS i'm aware that dovecot doesnt need the '.gz' extension on the file to recognize that as a gzipped file. Even without the .gz extension, dovecot is correctly reading the file. the '.gz' is not even necessary on the filename and still dovecot can handle it fine. anyway, i would like to suggest dovecot to handle the filename to keep the .gz extension, if that exists. This could help sysadmins to easily identify gzipped files on the maildirs and make anything with them, if that's desired. i would like to see dovecot changing filenames properly and keeping the .gz extension always, for example cur/1263436052.V6814I43300b4M146002.correio.domain.com.br,S=238207:2,S.gz instead of cur/1263436052.V6814I43300b4M146002.correio.domain.com.br,S=238207.gz:2,S cur/1263436052.V6814I43300b4M146002.correio.domain.com.br,S=238207:2,RS.gz instead of cur/1263436052.V6814I43300b4M146002.correio.domain.com.br,S=238207.gz:2,RS -- Atenciosamente / Sincerily, Leonardo Rodrigues Solutti Tecnologia http://www.solutti.com.br Minha armadilha de SPAM, NÃO mandem email gertrudes(a)solutti.com.br My SPAMTRAP, do not email it

[Dovecot] shared namespace bug?
by Patrick Kaiser 14 Jan '10

14 Jan '10

Hi, finally i got shared namespace up and running. But for example if user peter.griffin shares his inbox to another user, the LIST "" "*" output on telnet looks like: a02 LIST "" "*" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "Trash" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "INBOX" * LIST (\Noselect) "/" "shared/peter.griffi" * LIST (\HasChildren) "/" "shared/peter.griffin" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "shared/peter.griffinINBOX" a02 OK List completed. To share the inbox I previously run as logged in user peter.griffin a02 SETACL inbox peter.griffin lwxrk If I look in thunderbird, i can see under "share" two folders: peter.griffi and peter.griffin. Have i made something wrong, or is this a bug? [Dovecot] uw-imap compatability hack?
by Simon Annetts 14 Jan '10

14 Jan '10

Hi all Apologies if this question has already been asked before... I'm migrating from a uw-imap setup where the mail folders were in a subdir mail/ in the users' home directories. All of the clients are configured with 'IMAP server directory' set to mail/ (Thunderbird) and it would be difficult to change this on the clients (there are 1000s of them) I want to use maildir and I have converted the original mbox files in ~mail/ to maildir format. So in ~Maildir/ I now have: cur dovecot.index dovecot.index.cache dovecot.index.log dovecot-uidlist .Drafts new .Sent-Items .Spam subscriptions tmp .Trash if I remove the mail/ setting from 'IMAP server directory' in the client, then everything works as expected and all the folders are visible. With this setting in however, only the inbox is visible and attempts to click on another folder, say Trash result in the client error: Mailbox doesn't exist .mail.Trash I've tried various namespace configurations I found in the namespaces wiki example but none seem to work. What I would really like to happen is for dovecot to ignore this setting supplied by the client and not to prepend .mail onto the folders it is looking for. Is there a clever namespace that will do this for me, or some other setting or symlink trickery? Ultimately I want to support clients that might have both mail/ and nothing set in this box. Using dovecot 1.07. kind regards Simon -- This e-mail and any attachment is confidential. [Dovecot] Sieve and ManageSieve for Dovecot v2.0 merged into one repository
by Stephan Bosch 13 Jan '10

13 Jan '10

Hi, I've merged the Mercurial repositories for Sieve and ManageSieve for Dovecot v2.0 into one repository: http://hg.rename-it.nl/dovecot-2.0-pigeonhole This simplifies the build process significantly. It also allows tightly integrating the implementation of the script storage with the main Sieve library, enabling the possibility to implement alternate means of script storage, like for instance a SQL or LDAP database. Building ManageSieve is still optional as outlined in the INSTALL file. The old v2.0 repositories will be archived soon. I'm slowly but surely progressing towards a first Pigeonhole release for Dovecot v2.0. Regards, Stephan

[Dovecot] Allow POP3 per Domain
by Hauke Hagedorn 13 Jan '10

Hi List, I wonder, if it is possible to "switch" POP3 on or off for specific domains. Actually I want to disallow POP3-logins for a certain domain, whereas users can still login into a webinterface via IMAP. Curently I use Dovecot 1.1.11 on current Ubuntu 9.10 with a mySQL backend for authentication. With kind regards Hauke

got it, I have extdata working fine now for simple commands like redirect. vacation doesn't seem to be working properly - in that a message is not returned to the sender. There is no possibility that something wrong is with database, cause earlier I have been testing quotadict and dovecot updated my quota fields (bytes/messages) in another table. [Dovecot] Discard duplicate messages at delivery?
by Nicolas KOWALSKI 12 Jan '10

12 Jan '10

Hello, I am using dovecot 1.2.9, and the sieve plugin for filtering incoming messages into specific folders. The MTA is postfix, and deliver is called using the "mailbox_command = /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver" directive. Is it possible to make dovecot's deliver discard duplicate messages? With cyrus there is a duplicatesuppression directive which works well (http://cyrusimap.web.cmu.edu/imapd/overview.html#duplicate) With procmail, this can be done with the following recipe, but I did not found an equivalent for dovecot: # One often receives duplicate messages for cross-postings to mailing # lists, or explicit replies to a post from you in addition to the # mailing list message. # # The following recipe eliminates all duplicate messages. It tells # formail(1) to keep a cache file of the Message-IDs of the most # recent messages you've received. Since Message-IDs are guaranteed # unique for distinct messages, they are ideally suited to weed out # duplicates. # :0 Wh: msgid.lock | formail -D 65536 .saves.msgid Thanks, -- Nicolas

[Dovecot] Silent migration from mbox to maildir?
by Götz Reinicke - IT-Koordinator 12 Jan '10

12 Jan '10

Hi, after migrating to a new hardware (which is soo soooo mutch faster than the old one) I start to think about migrating from mbox to maildir. I'v read some docs and wikies and some questions are unanswered or maybe I skip the answers: - Is it possible to migrate the mboxes "silent" e.g. if a user logs in the mbox is converted? - regarding the Namespaces wiki article, it is possible to mix mbox and Maildir for one user. Is it possible to use this setup for all newly created accounts? or - Is it possible to have maildir set up for all newly created accounts while the old accounts still use mbox? Thanks for any suggestion and best regards, Götz -- Götz Reinicke IT-Koordinator Tel. +49 7141 969 420 Fax +49 7141 969 55 420 E-Mail goetz.reinicke(a)filmakademie.de Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg GmbH Akademiehof 10 71638 Ludwigsburg www.filmakademie.de Eintragung Amtsgericht Stuttgart HRB 205016 Vorsitzende des Aufsichtsrats: Prof. Dr. Claudia Hübner Staatsrätin für Demographischen Wandel und für Senioren im Staatsministerium Geschäftsführer: Prof. Thomas Schadt

[Dovecot] Dovecot Quota Problem
by Ken Price 12 Jan '10

12 Jan '10

I'm using Dovecot LDA with Exim. I'm also using Dictionary Quotas in a MySQL database. I want to avoid backscatter completely, so I set "quota_full_tempfail = yes" and handle quota checking in the Exim RCPT ACL during the SMTP session. The problem lies in the case where a user's account is nearly full. Smaller messages will continue to come through, but a larger message would get queued for retry since it will push the account over quota. I need Dovecot's quota to exhibit the same behavior as Exim's "quota_is_inclusive=false". >From Exim docs: quota_is_inclusive=false When this is done, the check for exceeding the quota does not include the current message. Thus, deliveries continue until the quota has been exceeded; thereafter, no futher messages are delivered. Any ideas on how I can implement this inside of Dovecot? Thanks, -Ken Price

[Dovecot] Problem in LSUB?
by Sergio Villar Senin 12 Jan '10

Hi guys, I'm not 100% sure about the dovecot version in the server because I don't have access to it, just an account, but I think it's 1.1-rc4 I'm an email client developer and I have a doubt about the behaviour of LSUB that I think it's buggy. See this chat with the server 40 LIST "" INBOX * LIST (\HasChildren) "." "INBOX" 40 OK List completed. 41 LIST "" INBOX* * LIST (\HasChildren) "." "INBOX" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "." My question is, why "LSUB "" INBOX" does not return anything while "LSUB "" INBOX*" does ? Br

[Dovecot] Dovecot (IMAP) Hangs sometimes
by Mario Gomide 12 Jan '10

12 Jan '10

Hi there! I'm using Dovecot 1.0.7 in RHEL 5.4 64bits as a IMAP/POP3 server. Dovecot authenticates users against an AD server via kerberos (pam configuration) and clients connect to it via IMAPs and POP3s with SSL. Webmail is in localhost and connects locally also with SSL. All is fine and people use the email server normally and with no problems. But, I have noticed that dovecot hangs sometimes. Usually twice a day somewhere between 09:40 and 10:00 a.m and in the afternoon at about 3:00 p.m. The problem starts when webmail takes long to authenticate and show folders and stuff. After a while it times out and doesn't connect. Then the clients (e.g. outlook, thunderbird) start taking long to connect and then they timeout. Important: Only IMAP connections timeout! POP3 continues ok. This latency keeps on going until dovecot finally hangs (after about 10 to 15 minutes). The problem is solved when I restart/reload dovecot. I'm not sure as to what's going on! I check the log, but it has been hard to pinpoint an exact event or to detect when the problem begins. Any ideas? BTW: what's the real difference between reload and restart? Thanks a lot! Mario

Thanks Stephan, I have the extdata plugin compiled, and am now trying to make a global sieve script to test it. I'm running into problems when using sievec to compile the script - I'm not getting the plugin's variables that are provided in dovecot.conf's plugin {}. I added a few sieve_sys_warning messages to track the calls to sieve_setting_get() <output> /usr/local/bin/sievec -d -P sieve_extdata /usr/local/etc/dovecot/sieve/before.sv Warning: sieve: sieve_setting_get: req: 'sieve_max_script_size' res: '(null)' Warning: sieve: sieve_setting_get: req: 'sieve_max_actions' res: '(null)' Warning: sieve: sieve_setting_get: req: 'sieve_max_redirects' res: '(null)' Warning: sieve: sieve_setting_get: req: 'sieve_subaddress_sep' res: '(null)' Warning: sieve: sieve_setting_get: req: 'recipient_delimiter' res: '(null)' Warning: sieve: sieve_setting_get: req: 'sieve_plugin_dir' res: '(null)' Warning: sieve: sieve_setting_get: req: 'sieve_plugins' res: '(null)' Warning: sieve: sieve_setting_get: req: 'sieve_extdata_dict_uri' res: '(null)' Warning: sieve: extdata: no dict uri specified, extension is unconfigured (sieve_extdata_dict_uri is not set). * Required extensions: 0: vacation (9) 1: variables (17) 2: vnd.dovecot.extdata (29) * Main program (block: 1): 00000000: EXTENSIONS [3]: 00000001: vacation 00000002: variables 00000003: SCOPE [0] (end: 00000008) 00000008: vnd.dovecot.extdata 00000009: VACATION 0000000a: (source line: 3) 0000000d: subject: VAR ${extdata.vacation_subject} 00000023: reason: VAR ${extdata.vacation_message} 00000038: handle: STR[77] "${extdata.vacation_message}${extdata.vacation_subject}<default-from><NO-MIME>" 00000088: [End of code] </output> I'm new to dovecot's internals, it looks like it just needs some environment variables provided, but I'm puzzled as to how this is to be done. I've traced it through sievec.c -> sieve_tool_sieve_env -> sieve_tool_get_setting -> getenv() call. More info: 1. I've traced the process, there's no attempt to open or stat any dovecot.conf 2. using tip dovecot-1.2, dovecot-1.2-sieve, pigeonhole-sieve-extdata. I pulled+updated & rebuilt and confirmed the above behaviour just prior to sending this message. 3. The test scripts run because the test framework uses the test_config mechanism to provide sieve_extdata_dict_uri. Any hints on how to get the dovecot.conf data to sievec? Thanks, -Martin Foster

[Dovecot] Same filenames on different servers?
by Alexander Chekalin 11 Jan '10

11 Jan '10

Hi, I'm really fuzzy about some problem on how Dovecot used to name files to store messages in Maildir. I have two identical servers (let's call them "First" and "Second"), and have Dovecot and Exim set up on both of them (Maildirs are used to store messages and boxes). First server is the server to be used by people around, and the Second server is backup one, the only thing it can do while the First is alive is to get (via rsync) First's mail spool. I set up rsync to run every 5 minutes, and that's quite well sync spools from First to Second. So if something wrong happens to First server we simple disconnect it from the network and put Second server in place of First. The problem is that files in Maildirs on First server are named like that: 1262610335.H798006P5447.first.domain.my,S=1962:2, 1262610402.H529761P5596.first.domain.my,S=2975:2, 1262610410.H787724P5657.first.domain.my,S=75691:2, ... and the files on Second server should be named like 1262610335.H798006P5447.second.domain.my,S=1962:2, 1262610402.H529761P5596.second.domain.my,S=2975:2, 1262610410.H787724P5657.second.domain.my,S=75691:2, ... As soon as I enter the Second's mailbox with IMAP client Dovecot used to rename files the way they should be. If after that I rsync spools I'll end up with double sized spool as there'll be both First and Second files: 1262610335.H798006P5447.first.domain.my,S=1962:2, 1262610335.H798006P5447.second.domain.my,S=1962:2, 1262610402.H529761P5596.first.domain.my,S=2975:2, 1262610402.H529761P5596.second.domain.my,S=2975:2, ... Long description for simple problem, yes :) I also tried to set: maildir_copy_preserve_filename = yes but still no luck. My setup is FreeBSD 7.2 with all versions in 1.1.x and 1.2.x branches (now it is 1.2.8). Thank you in advance for you advice, yours, Alexander

[Dovecot] sieve 0.1.14: vacation encodes Subject twice
by Roland Rosenfeld 11 Jan '10

11 Jan '10

Hi! I noticed the following problem in dovecot-1.2-sieve-0.1.14: The following vacation causes trouble with the Subject line: if not exists ["List-Id", "List-Post"] { vacation :days 7 :addresses ["test(a)netcologne.de"] :subject "=?utf-8?b?w4TDlsOc?= sadasd" "Bin gerade nicht hier."; } As you can see, the Subject is already MIME encoded according to RFC2047. Starting with sieve 0.1.14 the subject is now encoded by sieve again, so I get the following in my vacation mail: Subject: =?utf-8?q?=3D=3Futf-8=3Fb=3Fw4TDlsOc=3F=3D?= sadasd As you can see, the RFC2047 encoding is RFC2047 encoded, which results in an unreadable subject. According to RFC5230 section 4.3 this shouldn't happen: The ":subject" parameter specifies a subject line to attach to any vacation response that is generated. UTF-8 characters can be used in the string argument; implementations MUST convert the string to [RFC2047] encoded words if and only if non-ASCII characters are present. Implementations MUST generate an appropriate default subject line as specified below if no :subject parameter is specified. If I understand this right, sieve should do the RFC2047 encoding only if the string is non-ASCII. But the RFC2047 encoded string is already ASCII, so it should not be encoded a second time. I just compared this with sieve 0.1.13, which behaves different: It does not encode the Subject header at all. As long as the managesieve client (in our situation Horde/IMP) encodes the subject, everything works correct, while we run into trouble with 0.1.14. I think that there needs to some mechanism in sieve that checks whether the subject contains non-ASCII and does the encoding only in this case. I just checked out, that 0.1.14 does not encode a non RFC2047 encoded 7bit subject, while a 7bit subject starting with =?utf-8?... is encoded twice. [Dovecot] How to create UTF encoded folders?
by Kārlis Repsons 11 Jan '10

11 Jan '10

Hey, as I understand from post [1], system folders with UTF-8 chars in their names will only be available for use with Dovecot2 and I certainly look forward to that, but somehow I was short of info about the current use of UTF characters like ā, Ž etc. Should I just omit thinking about modified-UTF-7, avoid those characters for the time being and then with Dovecot2 create UTF-8 encoded folders with MUA and also on fs? Or there is something to know anyway? Please suggest as it would be a pity not to create folders with utf symbols... [1] http://www.mail-archive.com/dovecot@dovecot.org/msg23576.html

[Dovecot] "leave mail on server" workaround
by Kirill Miazine 11 Jan '10

11 Jan '10

Hello, POP users often keep fetched mail on server, by checking for "leave mail on server" or similar option in their client. What would be the best way to disallow them using such approach. That is, what is the best way to force deletion of messages that have been RETRieved in a POP session at the end of that POP session? RETRieved messages will be marked as \Seen, but since users might also use an IMAP client (e.g. webmail), it'll be dangerous to simply delete all \Seen messages in user's mailbox. I'm all open for suggestions. -- -- Kirill Miazine <km(a)krot.org>

[Dovecot] How to tell dovecot to use a specific MTA
by Spyros Tsiolis 10 Jan '10

10 Jan '10

Hello again people, OK. I checked a lot of HOWTOs and documents. One specific document describes how one can make dovecot "talk" to postfix. The procedure is pretty straightforward (taken from the document) : -- . Configuring Postfix and Dovecot Turn off sendmail: service sendmail stop chkconfig sendmail off system-switch-mail (select postfix) -- This is for CentOS systems. My question is pretty simple. How exactly does someone tell dovecot (or the CentOS system) that the MTA used is not a pre-packaged postfix MTA but (in my case as you have pretty much discovered by now) XMail compiled from source (no pre-packaged version AFAIK for CentOS; but even if existed, I would still build it on my own) ? [Dovecot] IMAP client dependence on dovecot mail storage fromat?
by Kārlis Repsons 09 Jan '10

09 Jan '10

Hi, After setting up a maildir tree with :LAYOUT=fs and accessing it with KMail and Thunderbird, various mail client-specific problems appeared, but, as I didn't try with maildir++, I would like to confirm here: does that matter for an IMAP client much if I store mail on server as ":LAYOUT=fs" or maildir++? Can it see differences? I would like to think, that IMAP protocol should provide for all transactions in a standard way and its dovecot's/server's sole business how it stores mail locally. However... These results seem not very good: KMail: try creating a folder "sub" in "parrent" and you'll get "parrent.sub" along with "parrent" on server side. There, however, are no problems with Latvian unicode chars. Thunderbird: it can create a new folder in "parrent" as desired, but it can't display Latvian unicode chars (being such at server side) on client, while, if I try creating a new folder with Thunderbird with these chars, on server it will look somewhat like base64! So I'm really confused. All together these things are pretty frustrating, sure, but I'd like to understand whats the real problem here!

[Dovecot] Sieve > Pigeonhole > external storage with LDAP or other data source available to dovecot
by Martin F. Foster 09 Jan '10

09 Jan '10

I am looking at porting and generalizing an old in-house patch that I'm using for the CMU Sieve plugin. It allows sieve script to test & lookup arguments from LDAP. Before getting too involved in this, I'd like to discuss my goals here in the hopes that someone else also thinks this would be useful. Many heads may make better design? Goal: ------ Allows scripts which are still stored on the filesystem to lookup parameters stored in an LDAP directory. Useful if you provide a global sieve script to implement functions such as "vacation", forwarding to small groups (not a MLM), wish to toggle whether a message is kept in the mailbox after being forwarded, etc. <example> # determine if we always auto-respond, or if we respond with a more vacation-ish setting of every 30d # # sample LDAP entry: # uid: testuser(a)domain.com # mailResponderMode: vacation # mailResponderText: "I'm on vacation, far far from the Internet" (base64 encoded string...) # "always" reply mode, sanitized to once a day if ldap "mailResponderMode" "reply" { vacation :days 1 "ldap@mailResponderText"; } # traditional "vacation" mode, say reply once every 30d if ldap "mailResponderMode" "vacation" { vacation :days 30 "ldap@mailResponderText"; } </example> This introduces: 1. a new command "ldap", to lookup attributes and their values in an LDAP directory using the user's context 2. an extention to the vacation command that looks up the vacation reply text that is triggered by supplying "ldap@ldapAttribute" as the text. 3. other actions not shown above which extends redirect and a few other commands to lookup data from LDAP Related work: 1. Pigeonhole low priority TODO would like to implement alternate script storage, eg: LDAP & SQL. I'm not immediately interested in alternate types of script storage, but for what I want to acheive, I need to sanely access at least an LDAP directory. 2. draft-ietf-sieve-external-lists (http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-sieve-external-lists-01) proposes a mechanism to pull mailing list addresses from external storage mechanisms such as LDAP, ACAP or relational databases. I'm interested in this, but would like to extend this functionality beyond just lists as the example above demonstrates. 3. there are security and resource consumption issues with doing this, suggesting that limits should be set, or the use may have to be restricted to global scripts eg: sieve_before or sieve_after The question: - do others on this list see value in the functionality described above? If there's some consensus that this would be useful, I'll flesh out howI think a generalized version of this old patch may behave, then (!) work on an implementation as a plugin to dovecot's sieve. cheers, -Martin Foster martin_foster(a)pacific.net.au martin.foster(a)pacnet.com

[Dovecot] shared namespace problem
by Patrick Kaiser 08 Jan '10

08 Jan '10

Hi List, I've got a problem, setting up shared namespaces. I am trying to setup a Mailbox (Maildir) which is accessible for some users. (For example mailbox "sales" and only sales representive have access to it) Mailboxes can be found under /var/vmail/<username>, whereas <username> looks like foo.bar or peter.griffin ;) Now, if I connect via telnet, loggin in as foo.bar and run a03 SETACL foobar peter.griffin lwrxk everything seems fine. Under /var/vmail/foo.bar is a acl-file dovecot-acl-list Under /var/vmail/foo.bar/.foobar is a acl-file dovecot-acl The contents looks ok. Also there is a generated file /var/vmail/shared-mailboxes.db. But if i now loggin in as peter.griffin and setup command a03 LIST "" "*" or a03 LIST "" "#shared" I can not find any shared mailbox. Above you can find my actual configuration. I've tried several versions of location: under shared namespace, but without success. Hope someone has a clue and point me into the right direction. [Dovecot] Dovecot Sieve: Vacation Recipient
by Lukas Kolbe 08 Jan '10

08 Jan '10

Hi! I tried to use the sieve vacation plugin, but we're facing a little problem: our user's addresses are <uid>@<domain>, and if they want to use imap and sieve, they can have a forward to <uid>@imap.<domain>. The return-path, and hence the address the vacation message is sent to, is then <uid>@<domain> and not the original sender of the message. Is there any way to circumvent this? Sending a vacation back to oneself doesn't really make sense here :) Oh, and happy new year and thank you all for this great piece of software! -- Lukas

Well, there might be scenarios, when a local user other than root may sniff the connection on localhost, but I think you have no such one. So to encrypt a connection from localhost to localhost is a waste of ressources. In case of Dovecot you'll need one extra file descriptior (and depending on your settings one extra process as well), plus the CPU time to actually do the encryption. > Yeah. The certificate is there. Under "/etc/ssl/certs". > I was thinking that maybe because the system (and the certificate > issuer, horde and dovecot are on the same box. The webmail-frontend _is_ your client in the view of Dovecot. But since the cert is in /etc/ssl/certs, it should work, but if you validate the cert, the webmail may bark, because you access the SSL-cert with the CN "webmail.domain.gr" by another name "localhost". This is a sign of a man-in-the-middle attack, actually. BTW: Do your SSL IMAP/POP clients also use the name "webmail.domain.gr"? Otherwise they will get a warning as well, maybe each time they connect. [Dovecot] First time Dovecot user, really impressed so far. What is best IMAP enabled webmail package to go with Dovecot?
by Stan Hoeppner 08 Jan '10

08 Jan '10

Greetings everyone, I'm new to the list as of today. I just installed Dovecot a couple of days ago for the first time, Debian Lenny Dovecot v1.0.15-2.3. So far I'm pretty impressed. I'm using mbox format with Dovecot auto-deciding to place mail in user home directories, which is great. It works very well with the Win32 Thunderbird 3 client over a small basic 100FDX switched net. I've got one list mail folder with 10,600 messages and server side body searching that folder via T-Bird is very quick, on the order of 5 seconds. It would probably be quicker if Dovecot threaded the search to use both CPUs, but pegging just the one CPU the search is still very darn quick. And this is on a dual P2-550 class machine with only 384MB RAM and a single 500GB 7200RPM SATA drive. I'd like to install a webmail package on the same host. I used Squirrelmail for this purpose many years ago and I wasn't wholly impressed with the user interface. I'm also not impressed by the fact that I regularly receive spam from compromised Squirrelmail hosts/accounts. I really like the look/feel of the Scalix Web Access AJAX based interface, but I can't/won't use Scalix as it's not supported on Debian, it has more features than I need, and the system requirements are a bit steep. So, what's the best FOSS IMAP enabled web mail front end with a modern look/feel? I'd like to run it on lighttpd, which I'm already using, not apache. Thanks in advance for any advice. My apologies if my first post is a little OT, but I figured there's probably no better place to ask about the best webmail front end for Dovecot than here. -- Stan

[Dovecot] Does Dovecot Sieve plug-in support Dovecot 2.0?
by wenjie zheng 08 Jan '10

Does Dovecot Sieve plug-in support Dovecot 2.0? We have a few servers running Dovecot 2.0 beta1, but the Dovecot Sieve plug-in (version 0.1.4) won't compile against it. Is this on the Sieve TODO list? If so, when do you see it will happen? Thanks Wenjie
