[Dovecot] permission issue when moving / copying a message

Hi all, I am having an issue with permission that may be a bug. The issue happens when moving / copying a message from a folder to another : sometimes the message gets the wrong permission (umask). The typical use case is, inside a maildir box and within imap, moving a spam message to the spam folder. Then a cron script is supposed to access to it to feed the antispam database. I wish the message file to be created with umask 0002 but sometimes it creates it with 0022. There is an example in my maildir : # ls -la /home/vmail/domain.com/contact/.spam/cur total 84 drwxrwx--- 2 vmail vmail 4096 déc. 7 23:19 . drwxrwx--- 5 vmail vmail 4096 déc. 7 23:19 .. -rw------- 2 vmail vmail 1303 déc. 7 14:37 1260211373.M462708P12977.genki:2,S -rw-rw---- 2 vmail vmail 73090 juin 8 14:57 1260224357.M884229P14370.genki:2,S As you can see, one file is OK and the other one not. Parents directories have the correct permissions, which should be pushed to the children (according to the doc). With my current configuration, it is something I can reproduce it often but I could not find what exactly triggers it. [Dovecot] Mbox corruption

I am trying to track down an mbox corruption issue that has been happening for one of our users. It appears that the mbox file is getting truncated and the all important From line no longer exists which then leads to the mbox being useless. It also appears, as in most truncations, that parts of the mbox are being lost. I am not sure how to debug this to find out whether this is a client or server issue and any pointers would be appreciated. Here are the facts as I have them: Server: RHEL5 x64/ Dovecot 1.2.8 Client: Win/ Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 This appears to only be happening for one user out of several hundred across 30 or so Dovecot servers, so I am leaning towards this being a client issue, but I don't know a great deal about the low level working of IMAP to debug. For example, I assume that the client issues a request to the server on the order of delete message 34 and the server then overwrites the mbox file (this then would point to it being a server issue)? The corruption occurs in a random assortment of this users files, so sometimes the inbox, others the Trash or one of many other folders this user has. The user also reports that before the corruption occurs duplicates of e-mail will start to appear in folders, even folders that have been unused for a long period of time. Oh I suppose I should also mention that this is about the third or fourth time this has happened to this user and it seems to happen about every 2-3 weeks. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Any suggestions as to how to root this out? Thanks, -Erinn

They are all running version 1.2.8 and are all configured identically minus compile differences for RHEL4 or 5 and x86 vs. x86_64. So the user is always accessing the same server. It is extremely odd that this issue is happening only to this one user on this one system which still make me lean toward it being a client issue but I am unsure of how to determine that. -Erinn

I have encountered a web server called Cherokee (http://www.cherokee-project.com) which has virtual server capability that *demands* a different certificate for each virtual server. How can that be I thought? This is what Cherokee documentation says: <QUOTE> SSL Virtual Hosts You might have been told elsewhere that named virtual hosts in SSL cannot be supported without SNI (Server Name Indication) because a web server cannot see the hostname header when the SSL request is being processed. Hi, first, sorry for my english, i hope u understand me :-/ I try to set up dovecot with imap and maildir. I run into a permission problem. I need to have read and execute rights of all folders and mails for the group (needed by the backup deamon). first I tried with umask, but this only affect folders and no mails. Then I read about dovecot-shared and tried this. Permissions are now ok but and this is a big but., I have troubles with thunderbird. I copied a folder from an pop3 account to the imap account (Inbox->subfolder). Now all mails are unread. OK i mark all as read. Now I move a message to the inbox and back to the subfolder an wonder, the mail is now marked as unreaded again. When i set up the mailboxes without the dovecot-shared file, the behaviour above is gone!! But my permission problem is back :-( Permissions of dovecot-shared is 750 and the mainfolder is 750 with g+s can anybody help me? thank u alot grz. fr3ak4l

Hi, I've setup dovecot 1.2.7 with dbox mail storage and ALTernative (additional) mail directory + expire plugin and expire_altmove working properly. grep from .conf: ( dbox:/var/spool/mail/%n/MAIL:INDEX=/var/spool/mail/%n/INDEX:ALT=/var/spool/mailarchive/%n/MAIL ) What i would need now is excluding all folders and messages from "ALT" maildir from default view (so they will not show in INBOX and other standard folders. I would like to create namespace or virtual folder and include those ALT maildirs as so called Archive (f.e. prefix). Is that (excluding ALT from default view) possible ? Hi to all! I’ve changed position to client auth socket to enable postfix authentication. The socket is now created in /var/spool/postfix/private/auth. authtest do not catch up the change. Reading source I’ve seen that path to auth sockets is written explicitly in function authtest_passdb in util/authtest.c to: if (auth_socket_path == NULL) auth_socket_path = PKG_RUNDIR"/auth-client”; I know I can launch authtest specifing path to socket, but I think it would be better if authtest would parse dovecot.conf and find out where sockets are. I’ve tried to code it by myself, but I’ve had no time to go deep in the code. Is it possible to have this “feature” added??? TIA Andrea

Hi, I have a problem with my postfix/dovecot configuration, I can't receive mail from outside, i can send a mail from my mail to myself and others, but i can only receive one i send from myself, but when it comes from outside my domains, it dosn't work. Hello all, I am trying to get my vacation messages to work correctly. In general it works like how I want, and replies when a message is arived to for example info(a)domain.com, but I have some problems to get my vacation message to work on catch-all boxes. Is there an option to for example auto-reply on every mail that is sendto @domain.com? [Dovecot] Can't start dovecot from heartbeat

I get the following error: Fatal: epoll_create(): Too many open files (you may need to increase /proc/sys/fs/epoll/max_user_instances) Works fine if I start it by hand, I'm guessing it has to due with the environment heart starts it in? My first thought was to do exactly what the message suggests, but my kernel doesn't appear to define max_user_instances, but there is a max_user_watches. I'm running 1.2.8, by the way. But I had a similar problem with earlier version too. John

Hi everybody, I have a problem after configuring dovecot to work with mysql (Debian Etch System). Hello, Dovecot bunch and Timo. I am using Sylpheed as my Dovecot/IMAP client. At home behind my LAN Sylpheed can send email because the Postfix SMTPd views my LAN as a trusted network. No such luck when I'm away from home. I know it has something to do with configuring the relay access elements but what I have tried so far does not work. I'm sure someone has had this simple issue previously. [Dovecot] Dovecot SSL limitations

Hello Timo, I'd like to check if my understanding of dovecot-1.2.x's SSL certificate handling is correct : SSL does not provide the server any mechanism to choose which certificate it must send relatively to the name the client is using. Thus, if you want to use different certificates, you have to listen to different addresses. This is an SSL limitation, not a dovecot nor IMAP limitation. This is the reason why it's possible to use different certificates for IMAP and POP3. But it seems to work only with those two : As a matter of fact, even if you listen to different addresses, how would you tell dovecot to send this certificate for this address and that certificate for that address, since there is no IP dependent section (as in apache IP-based virtual host for instance) ? It seems the only way would be to have more than one instance of dovecot (several dovecot with different config files). The problem is that some clients may be configured with mail.my.domain, some others with imap.my.domain, ...etc... The problem was in auth_bind=yes in dovecot-ldap.conf i didnt read thoroughly the http://wiki.dovecot.org/Authentication/MasterUsers?action=show&redirect=Mas… You should also add the pass=yes setting to the master passdb if possible. It means that Dovecot verifies that the login user really exists before allowing the master user to log in. Without the setting if a non-existing login username is given, depending on the configuration, it could either return an internal login error (the userdb lookup failed) or create a whole new user (with eg. static userdb). pass=yes doesn't work with PAM or LDAP with auth_bind=yes, because both of them require knowing the user's password. dovecot-1.2.8 creates /var/run/dovecot mode 750. I run postfix+dovecot in a virtual user setup. Postfix calls deliver as user vmail group vmail. Hello, I use Xdove 1.2 on my ts-409 together with IMAP/dovecot. I like to see the same folder structure on my different workstation (private/work ...). I move the mails into the folder structure I created. That works fine. But since I use Xdove with IMAP I have the problem that my mailclient loads all mails I already stored in different folders again into the INBOX (some mails also multiple with subfolders). These mails are duplicates (or multiples) because I delete them all. The mails in my folders are still there. Up to now I tried different mail clients. Thunderbird 2.x/3.x, Pegasus 4.5, Outlook Express. All behave the same way, so I think it must have something to do with the server. Maybe one of you heard about this and can give me hints where to look for. Which configuration files shall I post to help debug? Thanks, Bernd

Hi all, I think I may be doing something wrong but, is it possible to proxy POP and IMAP users when using a checkpassword script as the passdb? I'm trying to write a perl script to handle authentication to a mix of SQL and POP3 sources whilst logging user passwords at the same time for a migration. Messages from, say, smith(a)foo.ber were stored in ~/Mail/smith; all mail from smith was catenated into one file, and if I wanted to find something that smith had written, I would just cd to ~/Mail and grep or egrep on a likely word or phrase. Greetings all, After migrating a few dozen people to our departmental mailserver, we've run into a problem with one user who makes extensive use of folders and nesting them. I've seen as many as 8 levels. The longest resulting folder name is 113 characters, which results in a total path length of 137 characters (/var/spool/mail/******). Their old mail server handled this fine, but dovecot is choking on it; imapsync reports "invalid mailbox name", and he gets the same error clicking on the mailboxes in Thunderbird (they seem to have been created, despite the error messages.) Mail was imported over using imapsync, and did so flawlessly for all the other accounts. Are we running up against a soft (configuration file) or hard (source) limit? Or is this a bug? Thanks! Brett

Hello list, After upgrade to dovecot version 1.2.6 I have noticed some quota malfunctions(users become often overquota). Looking at logs closely I have found that quota value resets to general dovecot-config( quota = maildir:Mailbox quota quota_rule = *:storage=500M quota_rule2 = Trash:storage=10%% ), after dovecot --exec-mail ext /usr/libexec/dovecot/expire-tool.sh command. The problem that some users have their own quotas stored in ldap. In changes to version 1.2.6 I see - dovecot --exec-mail was broken. Is fixes to 1.2.6 touch userdb lookups from --exec-mail ? With 1.2.4 expire-tool works correct and I have no config changes to dovecot setup. If dovecot -n output is needed, please let me know. Thanks.

[Dovecot] new to dovecot

Hi there, I have installed debian with exim4 postgresql 8.3 and dovecot 1.0.15. I have the mail delivery part done, so when i send mail it gets delivered in ~/MailDir/ I have tried to authenticate via passwd and postgresql but with no luck. I have read a lot on google but i cannot get dovecot to give me the mails via pop3. Hello list, I have one user, which have a lot of folders (not it is 414 without INBOX). When he tries to create one more folder with random name - the folder successfully created, but LIST command invokes out of memory to imap process. Hello list, OK, I just registered with the list, so please be tolerant :-) I've been using another MTA for about, oh, I'd say nine years now. Due to reasons beyond me (mainly my clients demanding more for their buck / things like webmail etc.), I was forced to start searching for (always) open source alternatives. The last MTA was only POP3/SMTP. It does no webmail. It interfaces with other software with a lot of pain and difficulty. I'll cut to the chase. I would like to start using some kind of software that can do the following : 1. Do multiple domain handling. 2. Have a centralized user base 3. Have a centralized mail repository for each user (like exchange, only without the admin/maintenance pain that comes with it) 4. be able to do IMAP/POP3 and not SMTP/POP3 (or do I need all three of them ?) 5. Interface with things like web-based mail software (LAMP ?) Am I in the right place ? I would certainly like to think so. However, the feedback belongs to you . Hi! I've been using shared mailbox trees using maildir, unix permissions and separate namespaces per shared tree since dovecot 1.0. However now that I've upgraded to 1.2.8, I cannot create subfolders anymore. The server responds with "NO Invalid mailbox name: test/testsub". The hierarchy separator for the namespaces is / because I am mixing maildir and mbox namespaces and list=yes. The details: I am using a post-login script (attached) that detects all subfolders of /var/spool/mail/Shared for which the current user has at least read access. For every subfolder, it creates a separate namespace with the prefix Shared/<mailboxname>. The shared mailbox trees are in maildir format. If one of those namespace-prefixes is e.g. "Shared/sharedmailbox/", I am able to create "Shared/sharedmailbox/test" but trying to create "Shared/sharedmailbox/test/testsub" will fail with the above error. If I set the herarchy separator to '.' even creating "Shared/sharedmailbox/test" will fail. Any hints? [Dovecot] Slow IMAP Auth

Hello, I am experiencing IMAP authentication delays when a client first authenticates, or after the last auth timeout. There are only a handful of clients - less than 5 - using the server. I am using a mysql database and I have verified the PAM auth is commented out. Other than that I can't figure out what might be causing the slow authentication. The first time a client authenticates with SSL/CRAMD5 it takes almost 20 seconds. Does anyone have any suggestions? [Dovecot] Migrating existing local Maildir structure to dovecot server Maildir

Hello, I'm about to migrate a number of existing users who have been using POP3 with emails stored locally in KMail's Maildir format into an IMAP solution based on Dovecot. Will it be possible to simply move all the KDE Maildir folders from the local PCs to the Maildir folder on the IMAP server running Dovecot and then have the emails accessible on the server, or will this most likely mess up the Dovecot index files? If this causes index file trouble, is there any way to force a re-indexing of all these files, or is there another recommended way of migrating up to 7 years of email communication from local hosts to the IMAP server, for later putting them in folders? Thanks in advance! (PS. I noticed a few of the howto's on how to migrate to dovecot, but they only focus on moving from mbox to dovecot or similar, and not migrating existing Maildir emails to a new dovecot server... Ubuntu 8.04lts Dovecot 1.2.6 So, further to the 'deliver' problem posted yesterday I've also discovered another issue regarding permissions: files and directories are being created 0600/0700 by the IMAP and deliver process (depending on who gets there first!) preventing use of shared mailboxes. According to documentation: "When creating a new mailbox, Dovecot v1.2+ copies the permissions from the mailbox root directory." and "When creating new files inside a mailbox, Dovecot v1.2+ copies the read/write permissions from the mailbox's directory." Hello, I use Xdove 1.2 on my ts-409 together with IMAP/dovecot. I like to see the same folder structure on my different workstation (private/work ...). I move the mails into the folder structure I created. That works fine. But since I use Xdove with IMAP I have the problem that my mailclient loads all mails I already stored in different folders again into the INBOX (some mails also multiple with subfolders). These mails are duplicates (or multiples) because I delete them all. The mails in my folders are still there. Up to now I tried different mail clients. Thunderbird 2.x/3.x, Pegasus 4.5, Outlook Express. All behave the same way, so I think it must have something to do with the server. The times when the clients loads the mails into INBOX are not regular intervals. It can be a day when this happens again or one week. Maybe one of you heard about this and can give me hints where to look for. Which configuration files shall I post to help debug? Thanks, Bernd

We recently migrated from UW-Imap to dovecot. Our setup: dovecot 1.2.6 postfix 2.3.3 (from rhel) systemusers without shell access to the mailstore location = maildir:/maildir/%1n/%u:LAYOUT=fs All mails on local disks. Performance is great compared with mbox. But I still have some unresolved problems, mainly concerning deliver. Deliver sometimes wants to write a .temp.<hostname>.some-number file in the user's home directory. If the user is over quota (in his home!) he can't receive mails though no mails are stored in his home. The user homes are on a distributed filesystem (AFS). The mails are stored locally on the mailserver as I mentioned before. How can I tell deliver in the configuration to write the temp file at another location ? We would like to offer public folders for work groups. Reading with imap works fine. But I didn't find a way to tell deliver to drop mails directly in a public folder. Should I use Sieve instead ? Maybe this is rather a postfix question. Postfix is calling deliver. Userdb in the dovecot config is passwd. Postfix looks for local users in: local_recipient_maps = $alias_maps $recipient_canonical_maps unix:passwd.byname Any help is appreciated. Helga Mayer

Hi All, Our webmail having an issue with the harddrive so I build new webmail on other machine (using Squirrelmail+dovecot+postfix). After copy all data/home folder from the backup, when this user want to access his Sent item, nothing's in it. I'm going to take exception to the way dovecot (1.2.8) is returning the NONEXISTENT response code in certain cases. For example, these transactions: c: 1 EXAMINE "foo" S: 1 NO [NONEXISTENT] Mailbox doesn't exist: foo C: 2 STATUS "foo" (MESSAGES) S: 2 NO [NONEXISTENT] Mailbox doesn't exist: foo ...don't appear to be the proper usage of NONEXISTENT. From RFC 5530[3]: NONEXISTENT The operation attempts to delete something that does not exist. NONEXISTENT should be used for RENAME or DELETE (also the UID EXPUNGE) commands. Although the textual description is appropriate in the above situations - the mailbox truly doesn't exist - this is not what the response code indicates. Under the RFCs, it seems that failure of a STATUS or EXAMINE command with a NO response *could* mean the mailbox doesn't exist, but there is no method of reporting this via a response code. michael

Hi there, I've tried to update Dovecot to the latest version and have come upon an error during make. Previous upgrades have all been very easy (thank you!) and it appears that the updated make script includes a wget command and unfortunately OS X does not come with wget by default (curl is the default). Not being completely up to speed with the whole autoconf and make process, I'm a little at a loss as to where to even look for making a modification to use curl instead of wget - any assistance would be appreciated. We are looking to move to Dovecot from a customized Courier implementation. Our current format is maildir-like. It's basically a filesystem layout...hierarchies are identified by real directories/subdirectories. Our folder names do have a leading dot and for reasons related to other systems, we do not want to change our format at all.The Layout=FS is very close to working for us. The problem we have is the folder names are coming back with the leading dot to the clients. Is there a way through configuration to have the leading dot removed?So, just to clarify, under our maildir home, we have directories (folders) for example: .Trash, .Sent-Mail, etc. Then, any child folders would be resident in the physical subdirectories. The default dovecot.conf says # Dictionary can be used by some plugins to store key=value lists. # Currently this is only used by dict quota backend. Looks like expire uses dict as well. The managesieve comments are stale as well, with a reference to sieve_storage still in there. Or do they refer to the CMU sieve implementation? Anyway it is confusing. -frank

I'm getting tired of Thunderbird telling me I have unread messages in folders that haven't gotten new messages for months so I'm looking for a new mail client. I know the problem lies with Thunderbird because everything is fine via RoundCube and if it tell Thunderbird to rebuild it's index it shows the folder correctly again. Except of course for a subset of the messages in my inbox that it insists where delivered at the exact time I re-indexed it, every time. So what IMAP clients do people prefer these days? Preferably windows or cross platform and it needs to have decent key bindings because (probably like many of you) I get 100s of emails a day via lists and anything that speeds my way through them is good. I run my own server (probably obvious being on this list) and can install webmail clients as well. I ran squirrelmail for a while but although functional it's quite dated. I'm using RoundCube for access away from my systems now but it lacks keyboard shortcut support and trying to click one email after another with a laptop touchpad gets painful fast. Thanks, Jonathan

Now the problem: My global quota policy works fine, but I need to override them for some users. I was sucessful within IMAP itself. I use post-login scripting for that. The mail-clients displays the user-quota correctly. But delivery is still a problem, because I'm unable to override the settings there with post-login scripting. Everytime I send messages to such a user, dovecot sends it back with "Quota exceeded (mailbox for user is full)"... My Question: Is it possible to override the lda quota like I can do it within imap ? An attacker could for example replace Dovecot's auth socket and log in as other users. Gaining root privileges isn't possible though. This affects only v1.2 users, v1.1 and older versions were creating the directory with 0755 permission. If your Dovecot's base_dir isn't in /var/run/dovecot/, you should also make sure that the $prefix/var/ and $prefix/var/run/ (i.e. /usr/local/var/, /usr/local/var/run/ by default) aren't 0777. * Dovecot v1.2.x had been creating base_dir (and its parents if necessary) with 0777 permissions. The base_dir's permissions get changed to 0755 automatically at startup, but you may need to chmod the parent directories manually. - acl: If user has rights from more than one group, merge them instead of choosing one group's rights and ignoring others. - virtual: When using a lot of mailboxes, the virtual mailbox's header could have grown over 32 kB and caused "out of memory" crashes. Also over 64 kB headers couldn't even be updated with existing transaction log records. Added a new record type that gets used with >=64 kB headers. Older Dovecot versions don't understand this header and will log errors if they see it. - FETCH BODYSTRUCTURE didn't return RFC 2231 "key*" fields correctly

I've been running postfix/courier-ssl/MySQL/postfixadmin for years, but since I am in the process of building a new server I decide to reexamine my options. I'm sticking with postfix, but I've decided to move from courier to dovecot because everyone is telling me it's much faster, and I really dislike courier's SASL setup and integration with other services. Of course, I have dozens (but not hundreds) of gigabytes of Courier Maildirs for all the users. Most of the users are in MySQL virtual domains and their mail is stored in a common directory (/usr/local/virtual) and owned by a single system user (vpopmail). I've even hacked together a postfix service to run procmail for the virtual users, though my intention of creating a webface allowing them to muck up their own .procmailrcs never came to fruition. I'm doing my user migration in two steps. First, I will rsync all the mail (and all the user webfiles) to the new server, do any setup/conversion/&c to the data on the new server and make sure everything is working and that passwords are preserved. Then, right before the server goes live I will shutdown mail on the old machine, rsync any new mail (hopefully no more than a couple of hours worth) over, do any conversion, and then fire up the new server. 1) what do I need to do to convert or prepare the courier maildirs for dovecot? 2) is the current setup of virtual users reasonable for dovecot? 2.1) Is there a better option than postfixadmin? 3) some of my users are not in MySQL, but are real system users. Is this going to confuse dovecot (it confuses courier no end). These system users are still using courier and courier maildirs. 4) would it be better to take the server live and THEN move/convert the old mail? 5) anything else obvious that I didn't mention or ask that I should have? Hi all, I plan to run a dovecot IMAPS and POPS service on our network. We handle about 3 000 mailboxes. I thought first buying a topnotch server (8 cores and 16 Go RAM) with equalogic iSCSI SAN SAS 15K for storage backend. On second though (and after a comprhensive read of dovecot features), I saw in http://wiki.dovecot.org/MailLocation that index files can be created on a separete local filesystem. My question is : for 3000 users, is it possible to have only a SATA backend attached to my topnotch server (to handle bigger mail quotas) by storing index on local hard drives (SAS drives) ? Extra question, what is the better : iSCSI SATA backend or NFS share ? NFS share is more convenient to have a failover server. Thanks for your help. I've got an issue using Sun's compilers on Solaris 10 - it appears that dovecot is trying to use the getopt function, that's part of GNU's glibc, and, therefore, not present when using Sun's compilers. [Dovecot] quota is not ignoring trash

I have debian lenny configured with postfix 2.5.5 and dovecot 1.0.15 with mysql, every user has a different quota. The problem is that the quota is not ignoring trash folder, how can I solve this problem? [Dovecot] bug when creating /var/run/dovecot?

dovecot-1.2.7 If /var/run/dovecot does not exist when dovecot starts up (e.g. required when /var/run is a tmpfs/ramfs), it creates it. But it creates it with the wrong file mode -- the directory is mode 777. Being world writable means any user could change the name of any file within the directory, including the login directory, and then create their own new login directory. Or remove the pid file, or perhaps cause other types of havoc. Comments? -frank

Witam Sieve implementation in dovecot 1.2 have hard-coded limit for max redirect: SIEVE_DEFAULT_MAX_REDIRECTS 4. I have to rise this to much higher value, e.g. 64. Is there possibility to do this another way than recompiling source? Hello, I have a mail server running vm-pop3 and I am migrating it to Dovecot. I have a problem configuring Dovecot as a POP3 server only (I'm not interested in IMAP for now). I have two types of domains: one principal domain, whose users don't include the domain in the login process; and secondary domains, whose users include the domain part with the ! separator, instead of @ (i.e. prueba!mysecondarydomain.es). Hi, happy after migrating from Courier to Dovecot without major issues, and saving 3 Gb of RAM after the migration, now I'm going to move everything to a 5 Tb RAID6 array. There's another thread on SATA and cluster fs, but for now I'm looking for the best filesystem in your experience. Currently I use Reiser, but I'd like to know if someone has worked with ext4 and Dovecot's maildir++. Thanks. P.S. I have UPS and generator, but my RAID card doesn't have backup battery.

[Dovecot] Thunderbird Search Folder failures

In converting everyone at our site from UW-IMAP I've run into another problem with Thunderbird users that I'm hoping someone can help me with. The dovecot version I'm running is old (1.0.13 - we don't do production upgrades that often but I'm perfectly willing to install a newer version). The affected Thunderbird users are running Thunderbird version 2.0023 under Windows. All mail is stored in mbox format. What appears to be happening is that searches looking for string matches in the message body don't work. I set up a test case with the affected user. We created a folder that had 6 messages: 5 containing the string in the message body and 1 that did not. Then we set up a search folder that looked for the string. Opening the Thunderbird search folder yielded no messages matching the search. A rawlog trace of the search in dovecot showed that dovecot had indeed responded that no messages were found (when 5 should have been). This doesn't happen with UW-IMAP (version imap-2007e which I think is the last version with bug fixes ever issued). Is this perhaps a known bug in dovecot that was fixed many releases ago and I should upgrade?

Hi, How can I find out what the address of my dovecot server is? The server is working fine in my Debian sid machine, and clients can check it using the intranet name of the server machine. However, I'm not sure what address to provide in clients outside my home network so they can access the server. Is it simply the standard convention of 'machine.domain.com' address of the server? In dovecot-2.0.alpha3, setting "ssl_ca_file = /path/to/file" in conf.d/ssl.conf does not work, because imap-login chroots before opening the ca_file. Perhaps this parameter could be replaced with "ssl_ca = </path/to/file" as was done with ssl_cert and ssl_key. [Dovecot] automatically compiling sieve scripts

Without having looked into the code: Does Pigeonhole automatically compile a sieve script if the compiled form is not /strictly/ newer than the text form? I'm running into the problem that during automatic installation of a global sieve-after script, my Makefile has a rule to compile, yet afterwards, the sieve plugin complains about not being able to compile (which is correct, but it shouldn't try in the first place). Both text and binary form have identical time stamps. I don't want to sleep between install and sievec.

I setup a test machine with 2.0.alpha3 - Linux, Centos 5.4. I'm using Postfix as my MTA with dovecot to do SASL authorization from /etc/{passwd,shadow}. I'm getting 'dovecot/auth -w' processes hanging around, over a few days I've reached into the 100s. As a test I set auth_worker_max_count = 2, didn't make a difference. Attaching with strace, looks like they're in their standard poll loop waiting for input. Any ideas? I haven't instrumented any of the code yet to see what's going on. I expect somehow you're losing track that the auth worker is out there? I have an old 1.x installation working with a similar setup.
