I've been seeing lots of index cache file errors (using mbox on Solaris 8 sparc 64-bit, but with 32-bit Dovecot) since I switched my account to Dovecot 1.2.0 (we're still on 1.0.15 mostly, but I'm hoping to upgrade to 1.1.17+ this summer, or 1.2.x if it's stable enough). e.g. Error: Corrupted index cache file <path>/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index.cache: field index too large (47 >= 25) I've tried renaming/removing the .imap/INBOX directory, but the "Corrupted index cache file" errors return within a day or so. [Dovecot] Problems with Dovecot 1.2.3 + IMAP (SSL) + iPhone OS 3.0

Hello Has anyone else problems with Dovecot 1.2.3? For clients such as Thunderbird, Outlook 2007 everything works perfect. [Dovecot] RFC: Storing indexes in a (remote) database to increase dovecot scalability

Hi all, This is just an idea I had over the weekend; I was wondering if instead of storing the indexes/caches on disk, it would be possible to have an option to store them in a remote database (eg mysql). There are several issues that we currently have with scaling dovecot, and I think that if it could store indexes in an external database we could alleviate most of these issues. In no particular order: 1) One major issue we have with dovecot is the number of iops it requires to keep its files in sync on our big disk arrays. If this were a mysql database, we'd have better ways of keeping these in sync, for example switching the speed at which it flushes the updates to disk, growth using partitioning/sharding, read-only slave instances etc, specific ssd storage for indexes/caches. I know that we could create a separate ssd disk array and export that over nfs too, but see issue (2) below. If indexes were stored in a mysql database we could choose to have a different reliability for the indexes (ie if the database server crashes we have 1 second of index changes lost, whereas for the email itself we can ensure it is always kept in sync on our other disk arrays). 2) nfs locking issues. No matter how hard we try, we always find there are some issues with concurrency over nfs. It really doesn't seem designed to handle these issues very well. I've not tried with nfsv4 and I believe there are some improvements there, but at the same time nfs wasn't really designed to store databases and have heavy concurrency. A proper database server (eg mysql, postgres) on the other hand thrives in this type of environment, especially when coupled with a transactional storage backend such as innodb which includes support for deadlock handling etc. 3) As we store all of our mail systems over nfs, effectively each export is a single-threaded connection to the server. No matter how fast the central nfs server you can realistically not go above 10k nfs ops/sec on the fastest of local networks due to latency issues. With mysql you could have multiple parallel connections to the central database store (1 per process?) which would mean more nfs ops available for actually serving the files. 4) Caching. Much more tuneable on a database server than in a filesystem. Eg in mysql there are loads of options to tune the various innodb/query/key caches, on nfs there are very few even on advanced netapps etc I know some of you store all your indexes on a single server locally & then store the emails on a remote central filestore. Whilst this is a good idea, it doesn't scale very well in that if the one server fails then everything has to be reindexed as clients login which causes incredible load as dovecot has to re-read most of the messages (in pop3 mode at least) in order to work out size counts etc. In my experience this reindexing would take out our email system for the best part of a day. I'm sure we could set something up with drbd mirroring or a central san array with ssd's for the index data, but this intrinsically does not scale with as much ease as a replicating database cluster could. There are also failover issues which can be very easily solved with a database system (eg mysql with an active/passive dual-master setup). Also, I know that most of these points refer to nfs; and I know that there are alternative methods (eg san + gfs or some other scalable filesystem) however most of these are relatively new technologies whereas nfs is pretty much the standard for remote file storage; certainly I'd consider it a lot more reliable when compared to the likes of gfs or lustre. Your typical large scale mail setup would be over nfs and this is the sort of environment that I've run into these scaling issues in. I've heard that gfs also doesn't work very well with 'hot spots' which indexes tend to be, although I've no first hand experience of this. So, although this post only really mentions nfs & mysql (the two technologies that I'm most familiar with) I think this is a much more general problem so I'm not advocating the use of either technology apart from them being most people's first choices for ease of use. What I'm really proposing is a way to separate the two different types of data that dovecot uses. Indexes&caches contain small frequent transactions; and whilst these are relatively important, dropping the past few seconds of these transactions doesn't seriously matter. On the other hand emails are larger, infrequently changed & it's important they are kept fully in sync - if we accept a message it should be guaranteed that we don't loose it. At the end of the day it seems to me that a filesystem is the ideal place to store emails, whereas a database server would be the ideal place to store indexes/caches. Obviously for speed of setup, simply storing everything on a filesystem is easy so I'm not suggesting that we abandon this route, but for truly large infrastructures I think being able to use a database system would have significant advantages in each of these four areas. I would like 'some process' to store old mails at a cheap storage. I know how to do it with symlinks, but I don´t know if it is the best option. So, I´m asking if dovecot improves it somehow. Good day all, [Dovecot version 1.2.1] I've set up postfix and dovecot on Centos. I have a problem with the mail, it is begin received but not "processed" by dovecot. I've looked in the maillog file and found two problems; the first is that private/dovecot directory (I think it should be a directory) did not exist and the second problem is "mail transport unavailable". I've create a directory called /var/spool/postfix/private/dovecot but I get the following error in the log file: Connection refused (Is this an ownership issue? I've made the owner postfix) As for the second problem, I've spend the most of the past 3 days googling the error and found very little "useful" information. Do I need to supply more info? Hello Dovecot users, Apart from unfinished development of the date extension, this is a set of bug-fix releases. A few portability issues were found, a few stupidities were fixed and the ManageSieve proxy now also works with TLS. Most notably, the include extension had an issue regarding the expansion of $HOME in the personal include path. I've built a project site at: http://pigeonhole.dovecot.org Changelog Sieve v0.1.11: + Built skeleton implementation for the date extension (RFC5260). It compiles, but it does not do anything useful yet. Therefore, it is not part of the default compilation. - Fixed ARM portability issues caused by char type not being signed on that platform. Reading optional operands from a binary would fail for action side effects. Also, an accidental mixup of an int return type with bool caused the interpreter to continue on ARM even though an error occured. - Removed direct stdint.h includes to prevent portability issues. - Fixed segfault bug in the handling of script open failures. - Include: improved user error messages and system log messages. - Fixed copy-paste mixup between sieve_after and sieve_before settings in the LDA Sieve plugin. If only a sieve_after script was active, nothing would have been executed. Patch by Mike Abbott. - Include: fixed a bug in HOME substitution in the sieve_dir path. Surfaced in ManageSieve. Changelog ManageSieve v0.11.8: - Fixed TLS support for proxying ManageSieve. The protocol state machine was incorrect. Also added a check that disables ssl when 'starttls' is not enabled for the user. This produces a proper warning in the log file. Hello list, We are using virtual plugin for to provide users two additional folders: Company/all - it contains all messages in user's mailbox Company/favorites - here is flagged messages. With above config, 1 user make changes to his mailbox, but changes distribute for entire domain. First, I have tried to add :CONTROL=/data/mail/%d/%n/data/virtual to location part of virtual namespace, but I have no luck with such settings. Directory /data/mail/%d/%n/data/virtual not even been created. Then I tried to setup ACL for virtual mailbox. Adding "acl" to mail_plugins in imap and lda section and acl=vfile to plugins config. Unfortunately, VPN is not available (not all clients support VPN), so I will have to expose the imaps port to the Internet. My question is: how reliable is Dovecot in such a setup? I am not talking about encryption (protecting the traffic between server and client). I am talking about having the daemon exposed to anything coming in from the Internet, buffer overflows and stuff like that. This is a basic setup for the time being, until I get my head around it, but any pointers would be really appreciated. Hi! I'm gonna need to use dovecot's auth-client socket in an authentication program. Now the auth-client socket is only used by my MTA, which is postfix. Because postfix's smtpd process (which uses the auth-client socket) runs chrooted under postfix's spool directory, I must create the auth-client socket under that spool directory. However, to reach that socket from another chrooted program is impossible. Can I create multiple instances of auth-client sockets? I tried to define another client {} stanza in socket listen {} in dovecot.conf, but only the last client socket got created. I need only a true or false response from dovecot regarding the authentication, and I thought that this is exactly what auth-client socket will do. However, if I can not reach it, is there any alternative to this? What's up with the auth-master or auth-worker sockets? Are they capable of respond to an auth request too? btw, I'm running dovecot-1.2.3 Thanks! Hi, I have setup freebsd, postfix, dovecot and maia, but all the time i get the following error in /var/log/maillog - and i cant google me to the solution, please advice. [Dovecot] Creating a "default" domain

Hello, I'm setting up a test server to work through the issues involved in bringing a bunch of vpopmail/qmail/courier users into a postfix/dovecot server. So far I'm seeing lots of info to aid in the transition. One thing I'm lost on is that since Dovecot is providing all the auth mechanisms rather than vpopmail, I'm not sure how to emulate a particular vpopmail behavior we rely on. Vpopmail allows for the concept of a "default" domain for authentication. So if I have a bunch of domains, and one is "example.com", users in that domain can login with only the username part of their id (ie: "john") rather than supplying the domain (ie: "john(a)example.com"). I need to continue to offer this unless I want to walk a few hundred users through reconfiguring their mail clients. :) Any pointers? Hi, Im tryin to follow a guide, telling me howto setup freebsd with postfix and dovecot. The text in bold (first section), is what the guide says, and the text that follows is what the /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf files says. [Dovecot] All mail in mbox disappears when using Outlook

I thought I was imaging it but... I have a friend (honestly) that likes to clear his inbox every month by copying older into a folder (e.g. June-2009). Every month he complains that all the mail in the new folder has disappeared. This has happened three times now, and he's sort-of-right. I now believe it's a bug rather than him. The setup is Dovecot 1.1.3 on FreeBSD 7.0 and the client is Outlook 2003 SP3 (using IMAP). What you end up with is a folder called June-2009 with no messages visible. Outlook reckons it's completely empty - size 0. I don't know how he gets to this point, but it can't be anything that bizarre - just copying messages. It's happened three months in a row. However, he can't see the contents and I can't see the contents using Outlook. Strangely, Eudora and Squirrel have no problem. Corrupt mbox file? Probably not. If you copy the problem one, the copy works fine. The really weird thing is that if you rename the problem file (using mv) it STILL DOESN'T work. I've considered the possibility that it's got a bad lock on it, but if so, how come Squirrel and Eudora have no problem? I've searched as far as I can for any known problems using Outlook. What next? Hi Timo, the preconditions was: a dbox converted (convert-tool) from Maildir contents of dbox/mailboxes/INBOX/dbox-Mails was: - dovecot.index.log [64876 bytes] - dovecot-uidlist [167280 bytes] - 3237 mails I've started mutt to see the mails. Mutt lost the connection immediately. [Dovecot] hoping someone has a suggestion

Hi using dovecot 1.0.10 with pop/imap, using maildir, with 2000+ users mostly using pop but many using imap. Once in a great while I have problems with dovecot pop timing out. If I telnet to port 110 it just takes forever to come up or it doesn't at all, the samething happens on the imap port although 110 is always worst. At 1st when troubleshooting I was not sure what was causing the situation and when I ran out of options I stopped postfix. When I did this dovecot immediately started working again, that is port 110/143 came up fast and all the user logins were fast again. When I restarted postfix after a minute or so dovecot became slow again. While observing this situation I notice that postfix had most of the connections about 300+ in established state, while dovecot was using around 150 connections. After adjusting some of the parameters on postfix and shutting it down multiple times, suddenly everything worked but this time postfix was reporting over 3000 connections mostly in TIME_WAIT state which is normal for us. My question is what do you guys think is happening here, what is the relationship between dovecot/postfix that would cause this to happen. [Dovecot] Trying to get dovecot and squirrelmail talking

I have been using dovecot+squirrelmail with no problems on my Fedora box (currently at F10). I've been using a simple mail location string along the lines of 'mbox:~/usr/mail/%u:INBOX=mbox:/var/spool/mail/%u' (sorry, that's off the top of my head, I can't get into my box from here at the moment). Essentially: standard mbox inbox in /var/spool/mail/[user], plus mbox files under ~/usr/mail. These latter are for remote access to archived Thunderbird files, which are [currently] mbox format. This works fine. However, I've had some slight issues elsewhere which I feel would be eased or solved by making my INBOX use maildir format, and keeping mails I want to remote-access more often in the top level maildir there (instead of always having to dip into the TB mboxes). However, afterwards, trying to connect from squirrelmail I had it say that there were no [IMAP] folders to subscribe to, including the INBOX. I couldn't se any errors, either in /var/log/maillog or http's logs. Have I got something wrong? [Dovecot] Dovecot deliver uidlist issues

Hi all, Lets say I have a maildir which doesn't contain any dovecot files but has some emails lying around in it. If I add a message to this mailbox using deliver, dovecot creates the uidlist file with a single entry (the message that was just delivered). When I then log in to the mailbox, all the other messages are added into the uidlist file in the normal order (directory list order I believe). Then, the mailbox is in a situation where anything that was delivered into the mailbox before the user logs in is at the very top of a uidlist. Unfortunately many webmail clients seem to order the mailbox by reverse uidl, so we get the situation where people log into webmail (we use @mail) after their mailboxes have been migrated to dovecot and any messages delivered between the time of migration and the time of login are put to the very end of the list. This could presumably be fixed by ordering the mailbox according to date but certainly @mail doesn't really do this very well. I've only tested this on v1.1 (1.1.17 from atrpms), but I didn't see anything in the changelog to indicate that this deliver behaviour has changed in v1.2. Perhaps there should be a deliver option to recreate the uidlist file by doing a full scan if it doesn't exist (as a login via pop/imap would do), although I'm not sure why this shouldn't be the default? (apart from deliever potentially causing a high amount of io). My current work-around is to use postlogin to remove the uidlist file when someone logs in to the mailbox for the first time which then forces it to be created in the correct order; but this is a very messy solution. hi, I am trying to get a webbased IMAP mail module to work. http://nocc.sourceforge.net/ But it seems it doesn't connect to it. When i try to login it says: "login is not allowed for connection" i guess it has to do with the settings of the conf file. I have dovecot installed on Centos and installed it with yum. All (basic)settings are usually set correctly during install. After trying hard still no login. So i am hoping you guys can help me out. Hello list, My question: is sieve support some kind of "continue" action, to explicit tell server processing rules below current one(if current has triged)? Situation: I have few rules, which fileinto's to different directories. All is working fine, but if I want redirect all my mail for some period of time to another mailbox, I'm adding rule like this, to be processing first. if anyof (true) { redirect "koshikov(a)gmail.com"; keep; } Mail redirecting, but keep state store messages to INBOX. All I want - to process other rules, which will move message to the right imap directory. This situation also happens with vacation sieve-action. In sieve rfc I didn't find any workaround to that actions. Maybe someone know how to make sieve working in described way?

[Dovecot] deliver is curious

Hi, Im' using deliver with postfix (mailbox_command = /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver -n -m "$EXTENSION"). In dovecot.conf I've set mail_location to maildir:/var/spool/imap/users/%u/Maildir It works, but not for ONE "special" email. If I send mail to e.g. th(a)trg-oha.de it gets correctly delivered (see noerror.txt), but I have one mail with an attachment (i cannot provide it because of privacy reasons) where i get the attached error. [Dovecot] Deliver LDA versus vdelivermail

Good morning all, I have a question. Due to my interest in the Sieve plug-in. I'm considering to change the LDA on my production servers from 'vdelivermail' from vpopmail to 'deliver' from Dovecot. However I'm not sure how to go about doing this or whether there are any conversion issues that I should be aware of. Currently my /var/qmail/control/defaultdelivery is set to "./Maildir/". I am assuming I have to set that to: "|/var/qmail/bin/preline -f /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver -d $EXT@$USER" Does it also mean I have to recreate all .qmail and .qmail-default files? I am moving away from Cyrus, I'm trying to migrate to Dovecot. I am trying to get Sieve working with Dovecot and Postfix and it just won't work. Postfix is able to delived new messages to the "new" subfolder of the inbox structure. After I run Thunderbird, the new message gets moved to "cur" and it shows up in my inbox. So far so good. But now I'm trying to add Sieve. I turned on managesieve, installed Avelsieve in Squirrelmail, and did some tests. No matter what, the message stays in the inbox, it does not move to the designated folder: Postfix throws it in "new", it gets moved to "cur" after accessing my email with Thunderbird, and that's it. Hello list, after upgrading dovecot from 1.0.15 to 1.2.2 (and carefully reading through the upgrading notes in the wiki), I got sieve, quota and fts up and running, but I'm now suffering some kind of performance problem with the STATUS command. Symptoms: Reading mail on the IMAP server itself with "mutt", no TLS/SSL, connected through loopback interface. [Dovecot] How to delete retrieved mail

Hi All, I use Dovecot and XMail on a QNAP TS-509 NAS. QNAP has combined the two into a package they call XDove. Everything seems to be working great except for one thing. When Dovecot retrieves the mail from XMail it is not removing it from XMail. It is leaving a copy on XMail. Is there an option I can set in Dovecot so it will delete the mail message from XMail when it retrieves it. Thanks Don

Hello, is there a config possible which supports both of following authentication schemes ? 1st: If user presents a client certificate, he can log in w/o username/password, where user id comes from CN. Accepting any password is not the right solution. 2nd: If user does not present a client certificate, he have to authenticate by username/password. In both cases user data is read from userdb LDAP, which is already working. I was not able to get both auth schemes working at same time. Hi list I'm trying to set up shared public folders with individual SEEN flags. I've set up three test users, but as soon as one of them marks a mail in the public folder as seen or unseen, that change is propagated to all three users. If I watch the dovecot.index.log file in each user's directory for the public folder, I see all three change their last access time as soon as one user changes the SEEN status of a mail. Hi Timo, all of my tests fail with expire plugin, mail simply not get deleted i cant find any stuff in the logs why it does not or should not work. My guess that there is a problem with virtual plugin and/or shared namespace. It shouldnt be a problem with acl starting the script over cron as root am i right ? do you have any idea why it fails, is there a way to ignore all unneeded shared or virtual namespaces ? should there be a entry in the log when expire time is reached and deletion is unsuccessfull ? -- Best Regards MfG Robert Schetterer Germany/Munich/Bavaria

I'm trying to implement a shared mailbox: in other words, we have a generic email address ("security@") which we want a number of users to be able to monitor. The problem I have is that users can see folders under that shared mailbox but can't see the INBOX. All the users in question have their own INBOX in their private namespace, so does this raise a conflict with monitoring another mailbox's INBOX? I'm looking at implementing sieve in my environment. Software is: dovecot-1.2-sieve revision 1022:3c9a22c28156 dovecot-1.2 revision 9269:a303bb82c1c9 AIX 5.3 with sendmail mta using prescribed deliver lda. I have a few questions. I'll have 110k sieve files(1 for each user). Does sieve read the file each time a new message is accepted by sendmail? Are there any measurements on cpu load for sieve filters? Thanks, Jonathan

This morning I tried to read my mail using squirrelmail. I cann't connect. Hello, I am new to Dovecot but installation was quite easy, so there is one more LDAP authenticated, Dovecot / Postfix mailbox online, but there is one question left: I would like to set up a configuration, which encrypts every user mail with a unique key. If user logs in, private key should be decrypted with user password and every mail user requests should be decrypted with users private key. If a mail comes in, it should be encrypted with users public key. That key pair should be used for that purpose only. Obviously a GnuPG plugin between deliver and rest of Dovecot is needed. best reagrds Christian

Hello, I'm trying to figure out what exactly (and why) are the consequences of a lost or removal of the dovecot-uidlist file on an IMAP client (Thunderbird for instance). I took for granted that it was that the client would download all messages again since it might be confused by some UID changes. But I don't really see why (on the IMAP protocol level) and I don't know how to reproduce it. My understanding is that . dovecot-uidlist is not recreated until some client selects the mailbox . the client does something like : x UID fetch 1:* (FLAGS) to begin with anyway. So I guess the problem does not occur when no new messages arrive on the mailbox since the same UIDs would be assigned to the same messages ? But why would that change ? In which situation ? But can you show me some IMAP protocol command exchange that would illustrate . when such a problem can occur . how the client would detect that there has been some UID corruption . how it would fix it Thanks -- Thomas Hummel

Hello list, Today, my users have noticed, that delivery to folders with non-english names is broken. For example, if I create russian directory, it correct encoded and display into mail-client program and my webmail: Encoded: Normal view .INBOX.&BEIENQRBBEI- русс This is part of sieve script, which routing delivery to russian folder. .... elsif allof (header :contains "Subject" "qwe") { fileinto "INBOX/&BEIENQRBBEI-"; } But, when actualy delivery take place, in logs I have Jul 30 17:13:49 deliver(koshikov.n(a)domain.com): Info: sieve: msgid=<4A71A9E6.5040301(a)domain.com>: stored mail into mailbox 'INBOX/&-BEIENQRBBEI- And folder .INBOX.&-BEIENQRBBEI- appears in users maildir. This folder can't be unencoded by mail-client program and user see exactly "&-BEIENQRBBEI-" under INBOX directory(also normaly encoded directory "&BEIENQRBBEI-" --> "русс" displays correct). Something breaks encoding and adds sing "-" to all words in utf encoded directory names. I can't tell exactly when this problem appear, but I remember that I have tested delivery to russian directories by sieve scripts and all worked fine. My current dovecot installation is 1.2.2, dovecot-sieve-0.1.9 and managesieve-0.11.7

Hi, AIX's implementation of posix_fallocate is a little bit, let me say, peculiar. Attached is a patch to "fix" (=work around) this. In this case the return code has to be checked rather than errno. When patched dovecot handles err==EOPNOTSUPP the same way like errno==EINVAL on Solaris. A note for all AIX Admins: Without APAR IZ48778: POSIX_FALLOCATE() FAILS WITH ERROR-25(ENOTTY) resp. IZ46961: POSIX_FALLOCATE() FAILS WITH ERROR-25(ENOTTY) APPLIES TO AIX 5300-06 you don't even get EOPNOTSUPP: posix_fallocate fails with NOTTY. [Dovecot] lock files causing time outs with Thunderbird

I have dovecot 1.1.16 running on Solaris 10. We are seeing problem with lock files taking forever to be removed after opening a email folder like Trash with several thousand messages in them. We use mbox format. All users inbox's are local to the mail server, and all other users mail folders are stored on a separate file server mounted via NFS. I see no problems with the NFS mounts. cd'ing into the mount points, listing files and viewing files a perform with now visible delays. Is there something I can do in the config file to speed things up? [Dovecot] imap, locks, and dovecot

Let's say I have two computers -- a desktop and a laptop -- setup to check email on my postfix/dovecot/mailscanner box by using imap. Now, both machines use thunderbird and have a filter in that mail client to move emails that have a certain to: address (an alias, like support(a)domain.com) to a mail directory. The desktop is setup to check for mail every minute while the laptop initially is told to do the same. So, I send an email to the said address. dovecot (1.1.7) puts it in the inbox. thunderbird in one of those machines sees it and moves it to the, say, support folder. Then, another copy of the same mail is created and placed in the same folder. I then begin increasing the time the laptop waits before checking mails. Up to 5 minutes I am still having the double email issue, but if I the laptop to wait 10 minutes I only have one copy of the said email. That makes me think both clients are seeing the same email and moving it at the same time. I do not know the imap commands being used but it sure seems that there is not some kind of locking system for the mail files (I use maildir) to make sure only one program is accessing the said email. Am I correct? Is there a way around that?

Hi, after upgrading to Dovecot 1.2x including the rewritten Sieve plugin replacing 'cmusieve', messages which have formerly been filed to a "Public/Mailing-List" maildir are no longer filtered correctly. The sieve script itself is included in the user's personal-script. The messages are dropped to the INBOX rather than the "Public Namespace Maildir". Log's don't give a hint (at least to me). The documentation says the personal script should automatically fetch the include, and compile it in the users home... I see that you are adding X-Sieve header to all outgoing e-mail in cmd-redirect.c /* Prepend sieve version header (should not affect signatures) */ rfc2822_header_field_write(f, "X-Sieve", SIEVE_IMPLEMENTATION); How do you look at adding one more header, for example X-Sieve-Forward-From: Now, when redirect action is in use - mail forwards using sendmail command line interface. The problem that there is no suitable way to know which user's script has generate redirect. Received: header may contain envelope receiver but this is valid if only 1 "rcpt to:" command was specified on SMTP session. This invokes problem when forwarding mail to non-local domains, breaking such things like SPF. I'd like to setup SRS for fixing this, but I don't know sender("sieve local user") mail. Adding one header with valid local user e-mail address will fix this. Google add 2 headers for this - X-Forwarded-To: and X-Forwarded-For: . What do you think about this ?

[Dovecot] sieve 0.1.8 raw backtrace

hi, I had two problems with deliver / sieve. First one is not reproducible anymore. Im using debian unstable (amd64), often dist-upgraded, with some experimental stuff too (wine i think). The first basically triggered a backtrace when confronted an email with spammassassins report headers prepended. (user_prefs: report_safe 0) However i dont have that backtrace anymore, sorry. The second poped up only later as i began to investigate more the first, a few days later. Now my entire sieve script seemed broken suddenly. Faster and more stable on mboxes that 1.1.x by far... good job :-) Today I stumbled over a strange problem when I tried to subscribe an existing Mailbox (mbox), which doesn't work. Hi, After upgrading from dovecot 1.1 to dovecot 1.2.2 and the new sieve implementation (0.1.9), I'm having some strange problems. I'm including some general purpose scripts into my user script from sieve_global_dir. After some tests it seems that ths scripts get executed at random: sometimes the mail gets stored in the correct dir, and sometimes it goes to inbox. This also happens while using the same compiled .svbin file. Another indication that something is wrong with the compiled .svbin is output of sieved (see below). Running sieved on the compiled test{1,2,3}.svbin files gives regular output. [Dovecot] Random flags appearing on messages

Not reproducible every time, but every so often, after viewing an unseen message, I am seeing the first non-system flag set on the message without an intervening STORE call. Hello, I'm trying to authenticate using GSSAPI, but getting this in dovecot.log "authn_name and authz_name differ: not supported". What is actually trying to say me? I've remeber once encounter this problem but it get away silently. I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird 3 beta 3 and Dovecot 1.0.15

Hi, we have a medium setup (8000 pop and imap users using almost every available client, 800GB of stored mails using maildir on a Celerra NFS server, with index files on local disks, and procmail for local delivery), being served by a Dell PowerEdge 2850 (2GB RAM and dual P4 Xeon 3,2GHz). Our current not-so-high availability setup is based on a similar server with the same setup and a easy but manual process to switch from one server to another. We are thinking about setting up some kind of serious high availability, but for every strategy we think about some problems appear, and I'd like to hear your opinions about them: - The recommended setup, with each user being sent always to the same server, is not possible because our load balancers (Cisco Catalyst 6000) can't do that. - We could put both servers behind the load balancer, and keep local index files on each server. Usually the same ip we'll be redirected to the same server, so few problems will arise. When a user is sent to a new server, index will be rebuilt so performance will be bad but we should not expect other problems, right? - We could also put the index files on a nfs share. No problems, but pretty bad performance. - We could also get more ram for the servers and keep indices in memory. How can we compare these solutions? Apart from performance, are other problems expected? Using deliver instead of procmail could improve performance? - We've also thought about some more or less weird setups, like setting up a GFS filesystem for the index files, or setting up a proxy on every server which redirect users to their fixed server, but they seem too complex for few advantages. [Dovecot] Stuck with dovecot-sieve and horde-ingo ...

Hello, dovecot-users ... as you may read at http://lists.horde.org/archives/horde/Week-of-Mon-20090706/037786.html I am stuck getting dovecot-sieve working with the ingo-application of the horde-framework. To me it seems as if ingo doesn't even trigger any request/command to managesieve ... I set "mail_debug=yes" in the managesieve-section of dovecot.conf but don't see any errors there, in fact not even loglines in /var/log/mail ... Any way to increase the loglevel here? Apache also doesn't log any errors. I am able to contact managesieve via telnet or even thunderbird's sieve-plugin. I edited the relevant backends.php over and over again, substituting, starting from scratch etc ... Could someone maybe give me some hint on how to proceed? I don't know if the problem is with dovecot or ingo or the underlying php/perl/something-stuff ... [Dovecot] Expunged emails getting automatically deleted

Hello, So i had this email in my inbox, i moved it to Folder1/tickets/ folder, then i decided to move the same email back to my inbox and when i went to the inbox it wasnt there nor in Folder1/tickets/ folder... I opened a SSH session to the mail server and went to /srv/mail/ vmail/DOMAIN.COM/rventura/Maildir There i did "ll expunged/.INBOX/cur" and it showed me 300+ emails i then did "cat expunged/.INBOX/cur/the email i needed" and it showed me the email contents and since it was the one i needed i then try to do "mv expunged/.INBOX/cur/email-id" and it returned: mv: cannot stat `expunged/.INBOX/cur/ 1248796845.M207411P29102.housigma20,W=6193:2,STab': No such file or directory I do another "ll expunged/.INBOX/cur/" returns total 0..... [Dovecot] Cannot get plaintext auth working on IMAP or POP

Server: Ubuntu 9.04 desktop edition Dovecot 1.1.11 Issue: I have set dovecot.conf with: disable_plaintext_auth = no but everytime I have a client (Windows Live Mail, ubuntu evolution) connect from the Internet, I have the following type of message: Plaintext authentication disallowed on non-secure (SSL/TLS) connections. in my mail.log, I have: Jul 28 15:09:43 "name" dovecot: imap-login: Disconnected (tried to use disabled plaintext auth): rip=x.x.x.x, lip=x.x.x.x Unfortunately I need plaintext auth IMAP. If I VPN in and use IMAPS, it works a treat - but I can't always do this, hence needing plain old IMAP. Any ideas anyone? What am I missing? Hey everyone, I am trying to migrate old UW-IMAP setup to dovecot 1.2.2 using namespaces as recommended for UW-IMAP backwards compatibility: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Namespaces I am trying to use these settings: mail_location = mbox:~/:INBOX=~/.mailbox # default namespace namespace private { separator = / prefix = inbox = yes } # for backwards compatibility: namespace private { separator = / prefix = mail/ hidden = yes list = no # for v1.1+ subscriptions = no } With upper settings, dovecot crashes upon login. [Dovecot] Dovecot broken with newer OpenSSL

After updating my system from OpenSSL 0.9.8j to 0.9.8k Dovecot has stopped functioning properly with TLS sessions. The version of Dovecot does not seem to matter as I tried 1.1.11 - 1.1.14. Other programs using SSL/TLS such as Postfix and lightty still work fine when built with the newer release of OpenSSL. The IMAP client doesn't matter. For the time being I have gone back to .13 linked against older OpenSSL. In the logs I see messages like the following... dovecot: Apr 16 23:12:18 Info: imap-login: Disconnected (no auth attempts): rip=2001:470:b01e:3:216:41ff:fe17:6933, lip=2001:470:1d:8c::2, TLS handshaking: Disconnected -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Hi, I've just tried upgrading from 1.1.8 to 1.2.2. As soon as the new version was started up the number of imap/pop3 processes began to climb to 800+, where I normally have about 300 or so connections at any given time. The load on the server also climbed to 150+. I've reverted back to 1.1.18, which is running just fine, but is there anything I can do to help trace what was causing the problem? Unfortunately I don't have a clue where to start. Thanks Guy -- Don't just do something...sit there!

Hello, I'm quite new to dovecot, and I have some questions about folders. At the moment I've a script that use fetchmail + procmail to get mail from the isp, and save the mail in different folder. The idea is to save mail from different mailing list in different folder. Now I've installed dovecot so i can read mail from different computers, and i want to export all the folders. But openmoko one looks empty, even if there are more then 10k messages. Without namespaces and setting mail_location pointing to the openmoko folder works, i see the messages of openmoko folder as inbox in icedove. What's wrong? Do you have any suggestion? It probably won't have many released left. + dovecot -n/-a now outputs also lda settings. - Maildir++ quota: Quota was sometimes updated wrong when it was being recalculated. - Searching quoted-printable message body internally converted "_" characters to spaces and didn't match search keys with "_". - Messages in year's first/last day may have had broken timezones with OSes not having struct tm->tm_gmtoff (e.g. Solaris).
