[Dovecot] IMAP clients suddenly redownload folder headers

We had an issue today with IMAP clients (Thunderbird, Outlook) having to redownload headers for folders. This issue was eerily close to a MySQL database structure change that shouldn't have affected any related queries, however we did notice an event of user CPU % not being reported via SNMP around the same time for the server. There are no entries in our dovecot error log around the outage. We're running Dovecot 1.1.13 with MySQL being used for user and password queries, and Maildir for storage on a fibre channel SAN. However, it is possible for some stores to be on an NFS mount (supporting legacy during migration), which is why there is the nfs options in the below config. I'm wondering if someone could shed light on what could cause this to occur. I imagine it's related to the index cache's, but the lack of any mention in the error logs has me puzzled. I'm reading http://wiki.dovecot.org/ManageSieve/Install . I already use mercurial queues. Hi Timo, I solved the problem. The problem was the right order in dovecot.conf. "userdb ldap" should stand in front of "userdb static". Hello, I'm trying to configure my user_attrs using LDAP as the userdb so that dovecot knows what secondary groups a user is a member of. The LDAP backend is an Open Directory implementation, which stores secondary group affiliations as memberUid attributes in cn=groupname,cn=groups,dc=dns,dc=name,dc=server. With ldapsearch, my query would be: ldapsearch -x -b cn=groups,dc=dns,dc=name,dc=server "(memberUid=ian)" cn Is this possible to configure in Dovecot? Thanks, Ian

[Dovecot] Upgrade Question about mail_location

Hi, I plan on upgrading from 1.1.13 to 1.2.4 using an RPM. I have read the wiki [1] and have a question about the mail_location variable. Currently, in 1.1.13, I use: mail_location = maildir:/var/spool/virtual_mailboxes/%h with virtual mailboxes. However, I am planning to change it to use: home=/var/spool/virtual_mailboxes mail_location = maildir:%h as part of the new configuration. Is that correct or have I misinterpreted the wiki? Hi, We're seeing a new error under Dovecot 1.1.8 that we haven't seen before. Sep 14 09:00:10 hostname dovecot: [ID 684838 local6.error] child 638 (imap) killed with signal 10 This is being seen under dovecot 1.1.8, on Solaris 10u6. This is the only server we've got running this software. We're not seeing this on any of our other 5 servers running the 1.1.x series. Namely 1.1.6 on Solaris 10u6. Hello All, First of all thanks a lot for providing a quality software such as Dovecot. I am having troubles for setting up the config files of OpenBSD's binary package of Dovecot, flavor sieve/mysql. Do you know where some documentation could be found for setting up correctly the .conf (dovecot.conf & dovecot-sql.conf) since it does not even load ("Error in configuration file /etc/dovecot.conf line 871: Unknows setting: args"). I shall understand that the problem lies in dovecot-sql.conf, which is not a file I understand well and can configure correctly, as it seems. Some more docs/infos about this issue could be helpful. [Dovecot] Thunderbird does not find the right folders :-(

Moika, Overnight, I migrated my user-mails from uw-imap to dovecot-maildir. I used the uw2dovecot.pl script to convert all mails and changed exim, too. Receiving mails works fine allready, but nobody can access the usual subscribed folders with thunderbird. Via "subscriptions" I can find the converted folders in a folder called "_" (underline). People getting mad about me as the cannot find their stuff any more in the usual folders. What can I do that they have the converted stuff in the same folders as they had before? Hi Timo, No, I mean, when I try to subscribe folders, I get offered a folder "_" with some subfolders. I do a screenshot, its maybe better to understand. [Dovecot] fixing deleted-to-trash-plugin

Hi, I'm currently trying to make the deleted-to-trash-plugin work with dovecot v1.2.4, without this plugin the trash mailbox is pretty useless with mail clients like Evolution and Outlook, I still can't believe this functionality isn't intergrated into dovecot since it doesn't even influence the operation of other mail clients that do support this option theirselfs (even when turned on, the plugin detects this and doesn't break the client's functionality). I have modified the plugin to run without errorsin 1.2.4, when using a mail client which doesn't support this feature in the client itself, (according to my debug and the mail-log plugin output) everything works, but the mails are deleted as expected but not visible in the Trash box, it looks like they where copied to /dev/null :P (even though the log output makes me think otherwise). One of my colleagues has coded up a PAM module for this backend. The IMAP service is on HP-UX11.23, IA64. The module is compiles into /usr/lib/security/hpux32 and is called "pam_cached_radius.so.0.0". The entry in /etc/pam.conf is: cached-radius auth required pam_cached_radius.so.0.0 The PAM module compiles OK, and my colleague's test suite (run, both as root and as our local "dovecot" user) works fine. When I use the following options in dovecot.conf: auth default { user = root mechanisms = plain passdb pam { args = cached-radius } userdb passwd { } } it fails leaving only the log entry below in syslog. Hi, having a nightmare trying to get dovecot working on my SheevaPlug (flash based ARM embedded device). I need to use virtual users, and I need to store all the mail on an external USB HDD (not in home directories which live in the limited flash space). However I can't even log in via telnet. I've followed the Wiki troubleshooting tips, and still no further forward. logging via telnet, I get: "user sheeva BAD Error in IMAP command received by server." the logs show: ubuntu dovecot: User sheeva is missing UID (see mail_uid setting) What do I need to do? I hadn't thought of setting mail_debug, don't know why :) Now I can see more clearly. It seems that ACL files such as "/etc/dovecot/acls/Backup.received" or "/etc/dovecot/acls/Backup.sent" are read, but when accessing the actual mailbox Dovecot looks for a file "/etc/dovecot/acls/received" or "/etc/dovecot/acls/sent". I.e. the mailbox names *without* the namespace prefix. This can't be the desired behaviour, can it? When I create such an ACL file (""/etc/dovecot/acls/sent") the defined restrictions seem to be applied. At least KMail doesn't even offer to "Delete message" anymore. Thunderbird does and messages can apparently be deleted, but they show up again upon reloading the folder. This is probably a Thunderbird issue. Horde/IMP is similar in this regard. The Public namespace however doesn't seem to be given any consideration at all by Dovecot. I can see the namespace root ("Public") in the folder subscription list, but nothing beneath it. Even when I apply the "fix" described in the previous paragraphs I still can't see any of the public folders. The log file doesn't show anything about this either. There are no "dovecot-acl" files at all, anywhere. I want to avoid having to use them, which is why I am trying to get global ACLs to work. The "dovecot-acl-list" files are created in every root directory, i.e. /var/mail/public/dovecot-acl-list, /var/vmail/example.org/username/Maildir/dovecot-acl-list and /var/vmail/example.org/username/Maildir-backup/dovecot-acl-list. All three are empty. So, the second issue (private namespace ACLs) could be a bug in Dovecot, unless I misunderstood how to name ACL files for mailboxes in other private namespaces. The first issue (invisibility of public folders) is still a mystery to me. Ideas? Thanks again for your reply! Hi Everyone, I have a question regarding reverse quota_warnings. I'm building a new setup, and I would like to block sending messages if a person is over his/her quota limit. Although this can be accomplished using a quota_warning script, I can't find how to accomplish the reverse. Has anyone tried to do something like this? [Dovecot] Security holes in CMU Sieve plugin

A recently found security hole in Cyrus Sieve exists also in Dovecot, because Dovecot's Sieve plugin is based on libsieve from Cyrus project. I also found and fixed a few additional buffer overflows that I can't really understand why I hadn't noticed/fixed before. This security hole affects all installations that give their users any kind of ability to modify their Sieve scripts. Even if you give only limited access it might be enough for an attacker. For example forwarding a user's mails to about 100 addresses should do the trick. Since these are buffer overflows for variables in stack, they're very likely exploitable and allow attackers to execute arbitrary code as the user. Note that this security hole doesn't exist in Stephan Bosch's excellent new Sieve plugin for Dovecot v1.2. I encourage everyone to switch to using it as soon as possible. Who knows what other holes still lurk in libsieve. I have setup Dovecot-1.2 'delivery' to use Dovecot's Sieve as well (both versions are latest from dovecot.org) I am curious if sieve can handle Japanese, or locale, in general in the language. In particular, the subject which is encoded even more complicated. if header :contains "subject" ["test", "テスト"] { So if I want to file based on above, test, and tesuto (utf-8). Most Japanese mail is send in iso-2022-jp, will it use iconv to change to utf-8 before the test? Then handle the Subject encoding? (It's also possible to be in EUC-JP, but that is unusual). Hello I have problem with deliver dying with signal 11. I'm using postfix + dovecot devliver. If mailbox have many (100+) redirects in sieve or many other sieve rules deliver died. I have tested this in debian etch + dovecot 1.1.18 (compiled from sources) and debian lenny + dovecot 1.1.13 from backports. I am currently using dovecot 1.0.7-7.el5 on 32bit centos. Plan is to upgrade to 1.2.4 using http://atrpms.net/dist/el5/dovecot/ rpms. [Dovecot] Question about the pop3 feature "leave messages on server for a certain period of time"

Hi all I am missing something on the the pop3 "leave messages" rationale. Although the UIDL feature solves for the MUA the problem "whch mails should be downloaded", how the duration that these mails should be kept on server, say 10 days for one MUA and 20 days for another MUA for the same account, is resolved on the server? thanks in advance -- ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΣ ΚΑΡΑΠΙΠΕΡΗΣ ΤΕΧΝ. [Dovecot] Sieve, vacation, variables and russian language

Folks, I'm using a Sieve script for vacation messages and there's something strange with it in certain cases. The script uses the "variables" extension to produce the "Re: [original subject] (autoreply)" subject line for the vacation message. All is well except for cases when that [original subject] is written in Russian. In those cases the subject string is garbled, and the Amavis content filter says "X-Amavis-Alert: BAD HEADER SECTION, Non-encoded 8-bit data (char D0 hex):Subject: RE: \320\277\321?\320\276\320\261\320\260 (Auto[...]" It doesn't complain about English subject strings, though. I've seen the thread about "Sieve vacation with russian subject" at http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2009-July/041031.html , but that wasn't quite a solution. I can't figure out how to work around that, could anyone help out please? [Dovecot] Problem Deleting IMAP Folders

Hello, In my configuration I have mail_location = maildir:/Mail/frank.gr/%n:INDEX=/Mail/frank.gr/ __Indexes/%u I can create new folders in an IMAP session, but when I try to delete I get permission denied. [Dovecot] dovecot 1.2 and logging start failures

Hi, I've got report about issue when dovecot fails to start and there is no error logged (error goes only to stderr) situation: 1) dovecot is running 2) dovecot is automatically updated to new version (by yum update daemon), after update, dovecot is restarted (it's part of update script) 3) new dovecot fails to start (for whatever reason) result: dovecot not running and no error message has been logged because (at least some) errors were written to stderr only and not syslog another situation (original issue) was when dovecot was configured to listen for ipv4 and ipv6 connections. ipv6 support was disabled. After server reboot, dovecot failed to start, producing dovecot: Fatal: listen(::, 143) failed: Address already in use only to stderr, nothing in logs. Would it be possible to use syslog for error output sooner or there are any cons? Regards, Michal Hlavinka

[Dovecot] high imap load on large folders

Hello, i sync with imapsync from an archiopteryx-server to an dovecot-server, for testing until now. The dovecot is inside an VM. storage for mail is on an nfs-share, indexes are local. What i now see, is, on large folder( 58000 messages and more) the load on the imap-process is very high, and slowdown the transferprocess. Is there something, I can do. Whats cause the high load ind the imap-process. [Dovecot] New need to delete dovecot-acl-list in dovecot 1.2?

I just started testing 1.2.3 then 1.2.4 this week, I was too busy earlier in the year to look at 1.2 at all. So far so good except I noticed newly granted permissions via ACL on some newly created public mailboxes were not visible by the client. It seemed to be a version thing because the same files work fine concurrently on a server running 1.1.x. I came across this in the ACLwiki which seems to fix it: List cache dovecot-acl-list file lists all mailboxes that have "l" rights assigned. If you manually add/edit dovecot-acl files, you may need to delete the dovecot-acl-list to get the mailboxes visible. I don't ever recall needing to do this before, and it sounds similar to this which I have had set to 10 for a long time: # cache_secs parameter # specifies how many seconds to wait between stat()ing dovecot-acl file # to see if it changed. All of my dovecot-acl files are symlinks so hopefully it runs stat() on the target, but just in case I tried recreating the symlink afterwards but it didn't help and its over NFS so who knows if the running dovecot 'saw' it. Do I need to debug this behavior further or will I just have to live with remembering to delete the dovecot-acl-list file when I manually change dovecot-acl contents? Thanks.

[Dovecot] Odd/Incorrect Quota Reporting on Dovecot 1.2.4 & FreeBSD4

Hi, Am seeing an odd problem on an old FreeBSD 4.11 box that I'm trying to get courier off, and dovecot on. At the same time, I'm trying to put some fairly simple quota support on, but getting very odd results. I think it might be better described with the log below, but, the gist of it is this: I have set a 1GB quota, and I was getting intermittent reports on the quota usage - sometimes at the correct usage (300MB or so), and then at some crazy amount over the quota usage. I can get it to be consistently incorrect though, as displayed with the below log. The maildirsize is correct, and matches closely to 'du' output, it's simply coming through incorrect on IMAP. It also only seems to happen if the maildirsize is not created before the first 'getquota[root]' command occurs. I think it's something to do with dovecot + FreeBSD (at least, this version)! I've done a quick test on a Debian box, and I don't have the same problem. Anyone else have any ideas what could be going wrong on this FreeBSD box? Is it worth me giving the dovecot -n output at this stage? It happens on different mailboxes too, this is just a sample. Hello, I am using the latest version of Dovecot on a FreeBSD box. I am trying to figure out which password scheme to use to comply with my database backend which is administered by "postfix admin". Here is an example of the password that can be generated in the database using the various encryption schemes available in postfix admin: $1$a733fb07$/g1h6opQxemdWUtzD2/kQ. --> md5crypt 25f9e794323b453885f5181f1b624d0b --> md5 acFhkap78XB2I --> system I am not certain I have understood very well how things all feet together… I have tried to modify the various options in dovecot-mysql.conf in order to comply with these settings: I have updated "default_pass_scheme" to "PLAIN-MD5, DIGEST-MD5, and CRYPT" but none of this seems to work. Do I have to modify something in dovecot.conf? IMAP works normally as expected, using the following command will report correct quota. a login user1 pass1 user1 getquotaroot INBOX However, it seems LDA treat all users the same quota (100MB), and when trying to send mails to those vip users(300MB), it will reject the email and report "552 Requested mailbox exceeds quota. Hi again! After sometime using my changes on this plugin I found one major problem. When a message have two attachments with same name or one with content-type equal to "message/*", my solr schema design does not work because as attachment unique identifier I used attachment's name what is not correct. After installing a new server with dovecot 1.2.4, I found there is some new dovecot-uidvalidity* files in user's Maildir directory. However, I did not see such files in other servers with dovecot 1.1.2 (around 2008/07). What is function of those files? What will happen if I delete that files? I am curious why need to keep 2 files: dovecot-uidvalidity dovecot-uidvalidity.4aa4fa4c since the content of dovecot-uidvalidity is '4aa4fa4c' why do we need extra files? Hi, I'm wondering if someone already implemented a compression script (and would like to share it) based on the step-by-step provided on wiki page of Zlib module. I can already do some find|xargs gzip .... but couldnt implement it completly as described on the wiki page. I know the suggested step-by-step is very detailed and probably a must simplier will be enough for almost anyone .... anyway, if someone have the full script and would like to share it, i would be glad to get it :) http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Zlib 1) Find the mails you want to compress in a single maildir. 2) Compress the mails to tmp/ * Update the compressed files' mtimes to be the same as they were in the original files (e.g. touch command) 3) Run maildirlock <path> <timeout>. It writes PID to stdout, save it. * <path> is path to the Maildir's dovecot-uidlist (the control directory, if it's separate) * <timeout> specifies how long to wait for the lock before failing. 4) If maildirlock grabbed the lock successfully (exit code 0) you can continue. 5) For each mail you compressed: 1. Verify that it still exists where you last saw it. 2. If it doesn't exist, delete the compressed file. Its flags may have been changed or it may have been expunged. This happens rarely, so just let the next run handle it. 3. If the file does exist, rename() (mv) the compressed file over the original file. * Dovecot can now read the file, but to avoid compressing it again on the next run, you'll probably want to rename it again to include e.g. a "Z" flag in the file name to mark that it was compressed (e.g. 1223212411.M907959P17184.host,S=3271:2,SZ). Hi Timo (and all!), Venaktesh is a friend of mine working on a patch to the venerable Alpine mail reader so it can read Maildir format mailboxes on disk. Venkatesh wanted to know if he could use some code from Dovecot's lib-storage (safely opening/reading Maildirs, including accounting for NFS and ESTALE) and the UID->message mapping code. This way, Dovecot and Alpine would agree on how to handle UIDs for a given Maildir-format mailbox. Plus Alpine could benefit from the thought you've put into the safety of Maildirs on IMAP (which is *not* trivial!). But there are some possible licensing issues. Alpine (formerly known as PINE) is now licensed under the Apache License 2.0. As far as I can tell, if he wants to contribute a patch back to Alpine upstream, he should use use the Apache License 2.0. But Dovecot is licensed under LGPL 2.1; if he takes Dovecot code, modifies it, and mixes it with Alpine, that would not be allowed by the licenses together (as I understand it). The Apache License 2.0 is a permissive, non-copyleft license like the MIT License, but it adds a patent retaliation clause. See http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0.html for its text and http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/license-list.html for a short statement of its compatibility with GPLv3; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apache_License#GPL_compatibility has a little more. License-wise, there are two choices, if you're willing Timo: the modified Dovecot code could be released under GPLv3, which *is* compatible with the Alpine license - it would just mean Alpine+Maildir would be GPLv3 when put together. Or you could grant a special permission to Venkatesh to distribute the modified Dovecot code under the Apache License 2.0. Timo (and others), what do you think? I'm trying to suss out how to set up Dovecot in such a way as to have two separate IMAP services running on the same system. To explain. The current system uses the standard imap/imaps ports for internal auth, but a different port-pair for external access. Hi, I was just looking for some advice on avoiding getting DoS'd from brute force log in attempts. We came in this morning to find that one of our Solaris 9 dovecot severs had wedged overnight due to a brute force connection attempt to pop3 from Brasil. I had to kill -9 it this morning in order to restart the service. Once possibility I considered was that the dovecot user process limit was reached, but this is set to 1024, and I didn't see any errors or warnings anywhere in the logs. login_max_processes_count = 256 max_mail_processes = 1024 With the above I would think it would have been able to handle it gracefully, but apparently it did not. ulimit -n 2048 is also set on dovecot startup for the fd limit. Any suggestions on what I could tweak to prevent this from happening in the future? dovecot -n output: Note I upgraded to 1.2.4 this morning while it was already down. Hi, there is a line in TODO: "- sieve-cmu.c crash: i_assert(buf->used - 1 == part->body_size.physical_size); ". Yes, we've really seen this crash. Therefore we upgraded to dovecot-1.2.3 with dovecot-1.2-sieve-0.1.11 in order to use sieve plugin (i.e. not cmu-sieve). We use Solaris 10 on Sun servers, we don't use NFS. However, unfortunately, dovecot with sieve crashes too. Hey, i've got a problem with my lda and exim, probably i assume that it's dovecot. I think that, because i get an error in exim: T=dovecot_delivery: Child process of dovecot_delivery transport returned 67 (could mean user nonexistent) from command: /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver in exim i use /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver -d <name>@<domain>.<tld> -f <name>@<domain>.<tld> So, i tried to focus the error and thought there is not the right argument for delivery. But i couldn't get any hints about the arguments for the deliver agent. Exim gives me a complete string which is 'name(a)domain.ltd' Now my question. How parses the deliver agent this string? Splits it into variables? If yes... to which ones? name and domain? Hi, I just installed dovecot 1.1.11 and am having some issues. Howdy, I'm running Dovecot 1.1.16 on a staging server to do some testing before building a new server and moving a bunch of qmail/vpopmail/courier accounts over. I wanted to test the migration of courier accounts to dovecot with a few clients, so I copied over a few large accounts. All went well with a small account (100+ messages) when accessing the account via POP - no re-downloads after adjusting the uidl format. IMAP looks good as well after running the conversion script and setting the namespace properly. I'm going to kill it and manually delete the spam since I'm not familiar enough with gdb to dig in and see just what it's doing (although my guess is indexing). Hi, I am trying to assist a customer with a mbox to maildir migration. I have them using the latest and greatest mb2md.pl; the one that support -K, -U|-u. They have seen overwhelming success with this; however, a recent mbox introduced a new scenario and the result was that all messages were replayed in the client UI. The mbox in question had _no_ X-UID tags. To work-a-round the issue the customer performed the following steps. [snip] We found that the fix was to clear /var/indexes/$USER for the account and log in and log back out. After doing this X-UID's were populated for each respective message. [/snip] The customer also noted that after the migration all messages went to ~/MailDir/new. I would appreciate any thoughts on why this scenario played out the way it did? I configured dovecot to authenticate through ldap. When for some reason the ldap server is not working dovecot writes this message to the system log: dovecot: auth(default): accept(type 1) failed: Too many open files "Too many open files" is caused by an openldap bug. Hello, I've just subscribed to the list, as a recent user of Dovecot (1.2.4 by now). I eventually missed a point, so I tried to find other doc or comments about my issue, but failed to. If the following has already been discussed, please simply reply with a URL to the corresponding thread or doc ;-) Now that I have covered my ass, here is the problem I meet. In dovecot.conf, I have the following: mail_uid = vmail mail_guid = vmail which is confirmed with 'dovecot -n' I have a script my-expire-tool-test containing: #!/bin/sh set which basically only display environment variables. When I run : /usr/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail ext my-expire-tool-test I do not see any variable MAIL_UID nor MAIL_GID. [Dovecot] odd dovecot / spampal interaction

[Apologies if you've seen this message twice. I originally sent it from another e-mail account but it never seemed to appear on the list for me.] Apologies if this has been mentioned before. I've searched quite a few of the archives, but haven't found an answer. I've just installed dovecot 1.1.6 on my qnap server, and have found an odd interaction with spampal that I've not seen before using other imap servers. Let me attempt to explain. On the mail server machine, I use XMail to pull in new messages from my external pop3 mail account. These messages are then visable to dovecot's imap server. On my mail client machine, I have a spampal proxy between outlook express and the imap server. So, when I wish to read mail, outlook express connects to the spampal proxy and spampal then connects to the dovecot imap server. That all works fine until a message that spampal thinks is spam arrives. spampal instructs the dovecot imap server to move the message from Inbox to the Spam folder and then expunge Inbox. However, erroneously, a random message in my Inbox now seems to lose its seen flag. So if I have 5 new spam messages arrive, all 5 get moved from Inbox to Spam, but correspondingly 5 messages in the middle of my Inbox are now apparently not seen, so outlook express says there are 5 unseen messages, and lets me move down to them. It's almost as if the flags for the Spam folder are being applied to the Inbox folder instead. I've used wireshark to capture an example session of this happening when 2 spam messages arrive, in the hope that somebody wiser than I can work out what is going wrong, and where. I use offlineimap to sync my remote IMAP-server with my local IMAP-server (maildir format). But I don't understand this behavior: every new mail in the INBOX has a file-date which is one hour in the future. Is this 'normal'? Is this a problem of offlineimap? I tried this debugging (for dovecot): mail_executable = /usr/lib/dovecot/rawlog /usr/lib/dovecot/imap and this (for offlineimap): offlineimap -d imap,maildir,thread -l ~/offlineimap.log But I can't find any helpful information in these files, which shows me what went wrong. I'm trying to figure out how exactly v2.0 should be parsing configuration files. The most annoying part is if it should always just "use whatever comes first in config" or try some kind of a "use most specific rule". The "most specific" kind of makes more sense initially, but then you start wondering how to handle e.g.: 1) User logs in to imap from 192.168.0.1. What is foo's value? protocol imap { remote_ip 192.168.0.0/16 { foo = foo } } remote_ip 192.168.0.0/24 { foo = bar } 2) User logs in from 192.168.0.1 to 10.1.2.3. I noticed that the dirsize backend for quota didn't support any rules and figured it should be easy enough to add ``ignore'' at least. Using mbox storage and only tested with that, but it seems to work as expected for the time being. Hello, We are running dovecot 1.1.2 on a Solaris 10 box. We have been running the same configuration for about a year without a problem. We have a different cert for POP and IMAP. Recently we made two changes. The cert for IMAP expired and we had to install a new one. We applied some patches to the SAN disks that hosts the mail partition. These changes were made over a weekend and the system was rebooted. There were no errors in the logs and everything worked fine until the following Monday morning when IMAP connections increased. When IMAP ports started getting hammered in the morning, IMAP clients started getting "IMAP time out" errors. When this error occurs, IMAP freezes and IMAP clients such as, Thunderbird and Squirrelmail are not able to connect to the IMAP server (both IMAP and IMAPS). We cannot get a telnet connection to the IMAP port or a openssl connection to the IMAPS port. Kill -HUP of the dovecot server solves the problem. But again, when the usage increases, the problem surfaces again. There is no problem with POP or POPS. It continues to function normally while IMAP times out and freezes two or three times a day. Any clue where the problem might be? The debug log does not have any useful pointers. Thanks. Vasantha

Hi, Is it possible to call a completely external process to authenticate users in dovecot? I am trying to setup a transparent pop3 proxy that will lookup users from a couple of different pop3 servers, authenticate to 1 of them, take a copy of the password and a timestamp and client IP upon success, then proxy to the appropriate end server. I was hoping I would be able to do something along the lines of: dovecot.conf: passdb external args = /usr/scripts/dovecot_auth.pl %u %w The perl script would then carry out the various tasks and return the host and destuser for proxying. hello, I have qmail with vpopmail configured with 2 domains configured. the pop3 service is granted with vpopmail and the authentication function. I need imap for access to mailboxes in maildir format and courier do not support anymore vpopmail. i have find dovecot from a link on the inter7 site. I believe that dovecot lmtp server will be released with 2.0 version. I working at a project that requires an lmtp server to have scalability. How about the stability of the actual version (alpha, beta ?). Is it mature to be used at production environment ? But to this deliver the mx servers mount nfs partitions - we need to use maildrop because many patches we inserted. Hi, after reading the wiki about sieve_before/sieve_after and sieve_global_path, it's still unclear to me if: sieve_before scripts are executed if no user script exists, but a global script is defined. The reason I ask, is because I'd like to use the same script, so that I don't have to maintain two scripts to apply "company policy" or "global features". It seems implicit from this sentence, but I've been taught not to assume implicitness by various pieces of software ;) "This is not possible using the sieve_global_path setting, because that is only used when the user's private script does not exist." -- Mel

Is anyone running v 1.2.3 and have clients with AVG email scanning? I upgraded a server a few weeks ago (which ran Dovecot and the Maildir mail store), and all of a sudden clients with AVG were unable to use POP. Essentially, AVG freezes. The server upgrade was from FreeBSD 7 to OpenSolaris 2009.06, and I did upgrade the Dovecot version from 1.1.17 to 1.2.3, but kept the same config. When I point those users to a port running qmail-popup on another machine (NFS mounting the new server), they work fine. I'm sure I reverted to 1.1.17 during the initial hectic days, with no change. Of course, I'm also sure I had a few of the users test the alternate qmail-popup server, maybe they did it wrong. :( Any thoughts? I am attempting to get smartsieve 1.0 RC2 working with our test install of dovecot, but can not locate the Managesieve.php fix listed on the ManageSieve page: http://wiki.dovecot.org/ManageSieve/Clients Does anyone know of another location to get this fix? I've googled around, but not found an alternate location. We're running: dovecot-1.2.3 dovecot-1.2-sieve-0.1.12 dovecot-1.2-managesieve-0.11.9 The managesieve server is working fine for other ManageSieve clients such as Roundcube's managesieve and sieverules plugins, it is only smartsieve I am having problems with. I upgraded a number of servers to Dovecot 1.2.4, and now suddenly I get a lot of customers saying it takes a long time for them to log in. [Dovecot] Global ACL configuration problems: mailboxes not visible, set ACLs not honoured

Hi list, I am having trouble getting global ACLs to work correctly. This is, I assume, an issue separate from the one I reported a few days ago [1], where the imap process crashes when creating subfolders of folders with an ACL set. As you can see from my 'dovecot -n' output below I have three namespaces; two private ("Backup" and the default, empty one) and one public ("Public"). I also use the autocreate plugin to create a few standard folders. Those folders, along with some others, should have some special permissions and restrictions in place. I.e. messages must not be deletable, the mailbox itself may not be deleted, etc. I want to use global ACLs so that I don't have to put a dovecot-acl file in every folder that I want to have an ACL set. Thus, according to the wiki, if have set acl:vfile:/etc/dovecot/acls I can create files named "Sent", "Trash", "Drafts", "INBOX.Spam" and "Backup.sent", "Backup.received", "Public.Spam", "Public.Ham" in the directory /etc/dovecot/acls. These files contain the ACL, such as "owner lrp", "owner lrwsipk" and "authenticated lrwstipk". Any and all "dovecot-acl-list" files have been deleted before testing and reproducing that problem again just now. Is there anything more to it? I ask, because I can't seem to get it to work correctly using this approach with global ACLs. Problems include: - Can't get the mailboxes "Spam" and "Ham" under the "Public" namespace to show up in the mail client (Thunderbird, KMail, Horde/IMP) at all. These have the ACL "authenticated lrwstipk" set so the should be visible to authenticated clients, shouldn't they? All I see is the namespace with no mailboxes beneath it. - Deleting messages from the "Backup.sent" or "Backup.received" mailboxes is possible from Thunderbird, KMail and Horde/IMP, despite having the ACL "owner rlp" set, which, if I understand correctly, should only allow users to lookup, read and post to the mailing list via LDA/Sieve. What am I doing wrong? It seems to me that the global ACL files for namespaces other than the empty one are not at all considered? Do I have to use another notation for the ACL file names? In Dovecot v2.0 I'm splitting dovecot-example.conf to multiple files. It's probably annoying to have tons of dovecot-*-example.conf files, so what do you think about: 1. Change default sysconfdir from $prefix/etc to $prefix/etc/dovecot (that's what most distros do anyway) 2. Install *.conf files to $sysconfdir/example/ without the "-example" part in any of the config files. So new installations would then start with "mv example/* ."

Hi, I'm curious about some of the larger dovecot installs out there and what your current active user load looks like per server. Realistically, how many active IMAP sessions are some of you maintaining? At what point did you find the load became unmanageable? I know there's a lot of different factors involved in this, but I'm just looking to get a rough idea of what I can expect to be able to handle with dovecot. Any help is appreciated Regards, Brent

I have set up postifx and dovecot (1.1) with virtual users and delivery via LDA. I am very pleased with the results so far but have this problem with quotas. Setting a global quota using plugin { } I initially used maildir to set quotas, but they seem to apply to all folders apart from INBOX. For debugging I switched maildir to dict using mysql. The table populates as it should with sizes and message count for all messages created in trash/drafts/sent folders - but messages in the INBOX do not increment size or message count in the table. I have tried with quota rules for both messages and storage. I have also tried specifying INBOX instead of * Any suggestions on how to fix please? [Dovecot] Quick and dirty server optimized for IMAP upload speed?

Early next week I need to upload over 100,000 emails to an IMAP server as quickly as possible from an Outlook client. I am looking for any methods I can use to (temporarily?) speed up the rate at which dovecot can accept and store IMAP uploads, whether it be storing on local disk, ram disk, etc. I can setup a temporary server on a laptop for example and once the upload has finished I can use standard file copying methods to transfer the mail to stable, permanent storage. I haven't been able to see over about 7 msgs/sec upload speed from a local folder in any mail client to dovecot (only NFS or ZFS backend tested so far with Maildir). Is there something horribly wrong with the speed I am seeing or are there just tricks I can try? Any tips? I'll be working on it all weekend until I find something satisfactory. It seems like I can upload mails to an Exchange server quicker. I'll setup just about anything that my experience allows me to, I can be very resourceful with adhoc hardware and software. Alternatively I'll take a fast way of converting Exchange email to a tree of local mbox files which I can then run mb2md on. I tried using Thunderbird to Import the mails from Outlook and while it was fast, it messed up the formatting of some of the mails so I don't think I can use that. I tried readpst briefly from libpst but it took a long time to run, took alot of cpu, and was spewing lots of errors so I canceled it. Thanks for any input!

Hi, I come back with my problem: On debian lenny, using dovecot 1.1.13-2~bpo50+1 I try to configure my setup (with Postfix virtual domains) to use dovecot as lda but nothing happens, as if postfix not delegate to dovecot I am using the contreol panel alternc (http://www.alternc.org) All the maildir are in the format /var/alternc/mail/i/info_domainepublic.net for info(a)domainepublic.net The "virtual_mailbox_maps" will retrieve the correct maildir to deliver the message. For Alternc, an address is considered as an alias of the primary domain name. Thus info(a)domainepublic.net is assimilated to info_domainepublic.net(a)altern.domainepublic.net Here is a sequence of arrival of mail, the result of postconf -n, dovecot -n and the master.cf from postfix I looked in the documentation and google, but I do not understand the problem. [Dovecot] Dovecot 1.0.14 + osx 10.6 and authentication PAM

Howdy, Today I installed the new version of Apple OSX 10.6. Besides that it deleted the dovecot user, things went quite smooth. As far as I can tell it is running as it used to. However, I can't login to my account. It used to work fine with PAM taking the username and password from my osx installation. Now it doesn't allow me to login anymore. I have read on a website that apple changed from Linux-Pam to Open-Pam. If this is true, how would I need to change the PAM entry file? [Dovecot] Quota question.

Hi, I am trying to get quota working properly on dovecot 1.2.3 with postfix admin, amavisd-new, mysql, and postfix. So far I can see the db getting updated when messages are added and deleted from the mailbox. The problem I am having is that I have imported a bunch of messages from the old mail server that was running uw-imap and mbox to the doevcot machine using maildir++. As a result the quotas used only reflects what has been added and deleted since the import was done. What is the proper way to get the quota in the database to reflect what is actually in the users mailbox? Google and the wiki have not been helpful to me in figuring this out. This morning I upgraded a dovecot installation from 1.1.16 to 1.2.4 on a FreeBSD 7.2 server, and then spent 3 hours trying to figure out why GSSAPI authentication had broken. # dovecot --version 1.2.1 I'm trying to configure ACLs for public folders. I have: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- namespace public { separator = / prefix = shared2/ location = maildir:/home/pubfolders2:INDEX=~/Maildir/public2 subscriptions = no list = children } protocol imap { mail_plugins = acl } plugin { acl = vfile } -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have /home/pubfolders2/dovecot-acl containing: user=xyz lrwstiekxa I've also hardlinked the file to /home/pubfolders2/.info (one of the public folders: that dir contains cur,tmp,new). Since enabling ACLs in dovecot.conf, none of the users see the 'shared2' namespace. I've clearly misunderstood something. I'm expecting user xyz to be able to see the public folder.
