Hello, we're implementing a dovecot 1.2.1 with sieve 0.1.7 and managesieve 0.11.7. We're having problems with creating sieve scripts so that vacation works. Our script looks like this: require ["fileinto", "vacation"]; if address :matches ["To", "Cc"] "*someone(a)example.com*" { if not header :matches "X-Spam-Status" "Yes*" { vacation :days 1 :subject "test" "autoresponder test."; keep; } } And when sent and delivered to someone(a)example.com, we get this in the log: dovecot: deliver(username): sieve: msgid=<...>: discarding vacation response for message implicitly delivered to <username(a)fqdn.hostname.com> Our final recipients are in the form of username(a)fqdn.hostname.com; it looks like this is being matched in sieve as address. [Dovecot] High load with Thunderbird

Hello, all. I'm using Dovecot 1.0.15 on our internal mail server and I'm seeing a high load from one of our users. This user uses Thunderbird (with the IMAP protocol) and the load average of the server goes through the roof every once in a while. I'ld like to understand why we're seeing this and whether the blame should be put on Thunderbird or on Dovecot. Has anyone ever seen this before? Emmanuel

[Dovecot] SOT: Removing _extra_ linefeeds from MSOutlook(?) messages

I realize this is sorta off topic but my searches using Google have got me mostly no where. So I thought I'd ask here as there is a lot of _past Postfix_ mail handling issues discussed. The issue is; I have to deal with a lot of messages that come from MS Outlook users and sometimes they are replies to replies to replies ... My reading indicates it has a little to do with HTML composed messages and the format=flowed declaration. This produces messages with *lot* of extra line feeds. Makes the messages nearly unreadable -- in Thunderbird. I'm sure others have got two line (sentence) messages that took 6+ lines to display. Then when they are replies or forwards it is even more. Every line gets two NLs/CRLFs. Anyone have a suggestion of how to _strip_ multiple line feeds from a message? Is there a sieve method/way? I don't want to fiddle with all the users emails just my own. Pointers, ideas, clues? \\||/ Rod --

[Dovecot] critical X-UID reordering problem after upgrade from 1.1 to 1.2

We upgraded our imap server hardware and went from dovecot 1.1.3 to 1.2.3 in the process and have been having a critical problem since. I believe I've tracked it down to X-UID reordering that dovecot seemed to do to the mbox format (I know, I know...) inboxes. The problem has manifest itself in several ways with different mail clients but the general problem is that the mail clients have gotten confused about which message is which. For example, thunderbird will display the wrong information about a message in the header listing but then show the correct data in the message display window when you actually open the message. As you can imagine, this is causing all kinds of user problems. Here is a very simplified explanation of what I'm seeing. Imagine that the inbox had 5 messages with X-UID values 1, 3, 5, 6, and 9 before the upgrade. After the upgrade the X-UIDs were reordered so these same 5 messages now might have X-UID values of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Thunderbird then shows the summary information like this: Subject/Sender/Date for message 1 Subject/Sender/Date for message 2 Subject/Sender/Date for message 2 Subject/Sender/Date for message 4 Subject/Sender/Date for message 3 Now, if you actually open the 5th message it shows the right message body but the summary information is for the message that *used* to have X-UID 5 (which is now the 3rd message). So, the thunderbird cache is out of sync and I can fix it by removing the .msf file for that mailbox but, as you can imagine, the prospect of getting all the users to remove their .msf/.pst/?? cache files is daunting, to say the least. I've seen discussions about similar things happening with mbox format inboxes but they all seem to be in the context of some ancient 0.xx version of dovecot with known mbox processing bugs. But, I went from a reasonably current 1.1.3 version to 1.2.3. Right after seeing the problem, I upgraded to the just released 1.2.4 but either that didn't address the problem or, if it did, the reordering damage was already done by version 1.2.3. So, my 2 questions are: 1) Anyone know why this would have happened and whether it is a dovecot problem or something I botched? I folded all the local config changes I had made to the 1.1.3 conf file into the stock 1.2.3 conf file so they should have been identical modulo changes in the distro. And, our local config changes are really minimal. 2) Is there anything I can do now other than getting all the users to remove their .msf/.pst/etc files? It sure would be grand if there was something I could do on the server side that would magically cause all the client-side caches to be invalidated. I'm hesitant to strip the inboxes of all the X-IMAPbase and X-UID lines because I'm not sure what the ramifications of that might be. Here are some other random thoughts in case they might be related: - The old server was running 32bit RHEL4 and the new one 64bit RHEL5 - I'm using the pre-built dovecot rpms from atrpms.net - The dovecot index cache is kept in /var/cache/dovecot/indexes and I did not copy that over from the old server to the new assuming it would just be rebuilt. [Dovecot] valid-client-cert not implemented in postfix

Am building sieve plugin on AIX. This is revision 1095:8010f1eb66b3. Hello Dovecot users, I finally managed to make new releases of Sieve and ManageSieve for the recent Dovecot v1.2.4 release. The ManageSieve release is important to match login proxy API changes in Dovecot; older versions will not compile against the new Dovecot release. The new Sieve release first includes the new date extension, which allows matching against date values in header fields and the current date-time at script execution. Changelog Sieve v0.1.12: + Testsuite: added support for testing binaries stored on disk. + Implemented the new date extension. This allows matching against date values in header fields and the current date at the time of script evaluation. Changelog ManageSieve v0.11.9: * Adjusted to changes in the Dovecot login proxy API. My configuration : - a smtp server with Postfix 2.6 and Dovcot 1.1.11. - a windows 2003 server with active directory for accounts and boxes I would like to use SMTP / SASL on my postfix 2.6 to authenticate my remote laptop users (allow legitimate users to relay mail). To do that, I need to use SASL Dovecot fonctionnality and ldap request. How to configure Dovecot to enable SMTP/SASL and verify login/password who are declared on a second server in Windows 2003 (Active Directory). Regards

others have found this problem ? this possible bug can be used by user in that way that one password login can use 2 maildirs in filesystem effitively give them all space qoutas and lost of other goodies so to speak: foo(a)example.com with a password can login with fOO(a)example.com and fOo(a)example.com add more chars to get more mailbox :/ confirms ? i found the problem when i had horde installed dovecot 1.1.7 -- xpoint

I'm trying to setup deliver as an LDA for system users. I've read http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA/Sendmail which handles virtual users. I don't see a README for what I need. I want sendmail to accept the mail and then hand off to deliver with sieve plugin. Deliver should look in the users home directory which is found in /etc/passwd for the sieve-script to see what to do with it. If the sieve-script DNE, then just deliver to INBOX(from dovecot.conf). Any help would be appreciated. I was testing a new webmail client - like an idiot, against my own mailbox, instead of a test mailbox (or even a separate server) - and my Inbox got wiped. Fortunately I backup our mails nightly, so I only lost a couple from today. No idea how the wipe occured - I didn't INTENTIONALLY perform a delete + purge...but it happened. Is there a way of configuring Dovecot to ensure that any delete operation specified by a client results in a "move to Trash" as a precaution? Instead of relying on the client to perform it? -- Daniel

Hi, Is there a way in sieve to get the current date, preferably in YYYYMMDD format? To what I've found it's hard to achieve. I have tried including a :global sieve script in which I would set the current date to a certain variable and overwrite this included script every day. But to my disappointement variables set in an included script do not exist in the original script... In fact what I want to achieve is that some actions like forwarding or vacation messages are performed from a certain date untill another date. Which would allow a user to define a timeperiod in which the autoreply or forward should be done and automatically stop without updating the sieve script again. Comparing start and stopdate is cake, but just getting today's date seems to be a hassle, any ideas? regards, bart

I have understood correctly when thinking that all I need to do in order to restore mails, is to just copy the old maildir folder to the location where mail_location is pointing to and dovecot will find all the mails and display the old mails? Hi, Thank you to everyone who helped me get near the goal. Remains a problem is that aliases don't work. The problem is that in the configuration of alternc, the mails are seen as aliases in the form user_domain.tld. In a second time, a match is made to see if an "real" alias exists. postmap -q test(a)lists.test.net mysql:/etc/postfix/mydomain.cf test-owner_lists.collectifs.net postmap -q test-owner_lists.test.net mysql:/etc/postfix/myalias.cf "| /var/lib/mailman/mail/mailman owner test" With my configuration, this second part doesn't work. Perhaps the simplest is to ask to deliver the mail to user_domain.tld except of user(a)domain.tld in master.cf ? [Dovecot] Gotchas in switching from one server to another without impacting users?

We have to replace one mail store (foo.example.org) with another (bar.example.org) I rsync'd the maildirs from foo to bar today and the plan is to hold all delivery (in the SMTP server) on foo over the weekend, rsync again (this time it should be much faster since the large xfer already occurred today), then flush the SMTP queue on foo towards bar, direct all new deliveries to bar.example.org. Users currently access their IMAP mailboxes via imap.example.org. I plan to just 'flip the switch' at DNS so imap.example.org points to bar.example.org (instead of foo.example.org) so users don't have to change anything on their end and should not even notice this change. Is there anything else I should think about to mitigate users noticing a change? Does the fact that the mail filenames include 'foo.example.org' in the file name (while new deliveries to bar.example.org will include that new hostname) spell trouble later on or can I ignore it? Is there a more efficient way to achieve my goal? And finally, dovecot on foo.example.org is 1.1.7 while the new server is running 1.1.16. I don't think that should be an issue, but mentioning it just in case. Thanks! -- GC

[Dovecot] Public namespaces with global ACLs 1.2+

Hi, I'm having trouble to get ACLs working in a more restrictive way with namespaces. I would like to grant certain users the ability to create new mailboxes in a public namespace e.g. "Public/Newsletters" etc. It works when I add the users to a ".DEFAULT" ACL file like this: user=username lrwk Anyway I'd like to limit their permissions on the Namespace "Public", or even better - being more restrictive, on "Public/Newsletters". Neither global ACL files for "Public" nor "Newsletters" nested in the global path seem to work. For now only the .DEFAULT ACL (/var/vmail/ domain/etc/acls/.DEFAULT) seems to mitigate the problem which is undesirable. dovecot -n excerpt: plugin: acl: vfile:/var/vmail/%d/etc/acls:cache_secs=300 Thanks Thomas

Hi all, I have configured Dovecot as a POP/IMAP-Server in front of a Postfix-Server. Every thing works without one thing: LDAP-quotas The main-quota-rule works: quota_rule: *:storage=8M Only the LDAP-quota won't be used by Dovecot: user_attrs = msRADIUSFramedIPAddress=quota_rule=*:storage=%$k I have to use the special LDAP-field "msRADIUSFramedIPAddress" because my W2003 domain controller don't have a regular quota field. This LDAP-field is the only "free integer" LDAP-field. Could anyone please give me a hint? [Dovecot] BUG: mbox_snarf causes message duplication when two IMAP connections are open

Hello, I have used dovecot to replace an ageing wu-imap installation using the mbox_snarf plugin however I have noticed that when we have more than one client checking the INBOX we then have messages being duplicated in the INBOX. Below is the configuration used as requested in the bug report page. I have confirmed that the duplicates are being caused by dovecot by doing an strace of both processes that have both the INBOX (/mail_home/$username/INBOX) and mail spool file (/var/spool/dovecot/$username) open and delivering a new message through exim to the mail spool file in /var/spool/dovecot/$username. I then see in strace first one process check the spool and copy the message over and then the other processes do the same. If anyone requires any further information to confirm this bug please let me know. Kind regards. [Dovecot] More Migration Questions

Hello, I was on here a month or two ago asking lots of questions about migrating from uw-imapd/qpopper/mbox to dovecot/maildir. I am now at the stage where i'm trying to convert all my emails, but i have a few questions... Where should i convert my mbox mailboxes into? "/home/username/Maildir/" or "/somewhere/maildirs/"? Does it actually matter? Is there a standard location that they *should* go? I've tried converting them into "/somewhere/maildirs/username/", but then i found a dovecot page that says they are usually stored in "/home/username/Maildir" so now i don't know where to put them! Also, having converted the mbox files into maildir files, i do seem to have one email per file, as intended, but the files have names like "1250253965.000586.mbox,S=8167,W=8427:2,S". Should they have the word "mbox" in their filename if they are maildir files? Finally, it appears that our existing IMAP users (all mbox) have mailboxes stored simply in their home directory, not necessarily inside the "~/mail/" directory - is this going to be a problem? The command i'm using to convert is this one: ./migrateuser.sh username /home/username /vol2/maildirs/username This script (and the latest mb2md.py that goes with it, to preserve msg IDs) were obtained from here: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration/MailFormat The stage i'm at with the server overall is that uw-imapd and qpopper have been completely removed, exim is currently setup to deliver via it's own method into the mbox files in /var/spool/mail but the exim service is stopped because i'm migrating, and dovecot 1.1 is installed but stopped, and has had no configuration done to it yet whatsoever. Hi all I have dovecot 1.1.16 (dovecot-1.1.16-0_94.el5 x86-64) installed on a Red Hat Enterprise v.5. I am already using Dovecot's deliver for virtual users local delivery and need to install the cmusieve plugin for the filtering capabilities. It still seems to be possible for them to read their mail using squirell mail. I tried enabling core dumps using 'ulimit -c unlimited' and messing around with some environment variables to stop the startup scripts from forcing core dumps off again (DAEMON_COREFILE_LIMIT=18446744073709551615 /etc/init.d/dovecot restart). After doing that, I do not see anything in the logs any more - but I still seem to be having problems moving the emails around in my account. It would seem that it is still broken but Im just not getting any logs telling me so. There don't seem to be any core dumps sitting around anywhere either. [Dovecot] How to disable system users from receiving mail?

I know that login can be disable for system users and groups, but how do I refuse email for system groups? It's a bit of a security/maintenance irritation - I don't want to check for such spam mail, since that is possible. Thanks for any help!! Answer preferably given, so that I can configure it through webmin please.

[Dovecot] can't deliver with Kerberos username

I've been trying to use Kerberos and PLAIN text file for authentication. I've setup deliver in postfix master.cf and make sure correct username are expanded but deliver is always told me "user unknown". I can logon into mailbox using Kerberos w/o problems and can send emails. Hy! I am currently configuring a new mailserver using postfix and dovecot 1.2.1. The filesystem strucutre in my spool directory is user1/ user2/ domain/info/ domain/office/ user1 and unser2 are ordinary users mailboxes, the latter two contain the virtual mailboxes for info@domain and office@domain as created by postfix. I want these virtual mailboxes (all of them are in maildir format) to be shared to certain real users. I configured a shared namespace: namespace shared { separator = / prefix = shared/%%d/%%n/ location = maildir:/var/spool/vmaildir/%%d/%%n/ #I tried ths as well # prefix = shared/%%u/ # location = maildir:/var/spool/vmaildir/%%u/ hidden = no subscriptions = no list = yes inbox = no } Then I configured a dictionary to list the folders, as described in the wiki: plugin { acl_shared_dict = proxy::acl } dict { acl = mysql:/etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-sql.conf } where /etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-sql.conf holds map { pattern = shared/shared-boxes/user/$to/$from table = virtual_user_shares value_field = dummy fields { from_user = $from to_user = $to } } The database table consists of +-------------+------------+-------+ | from_user | to_user | dummy | +-------------+------------+-------+ | info@domain | user1 | 1 | +-------------+------------+-------+ But when I login as user1 I can neither see nor subscribe to the info@domain mailbox. [Dovecot] Released Sieve v0.1.10 for Dovecot v1.2.2

Hello Dovecot users, In the last week two nasty bugs were found in the new Sieve implementation. Primarily, the include extension did not work when a compiled binary was loaded from disk. This is something that is still not tested by the test suite, giving this bug the opportunity to slip through. Also, the value matching implementation would sometimes cause a assertion failure. Other than that, various small bugs were fixed. On the more positive side, I have implemented support for the new mailbox extension (RFC 5490), which provides the means to test whether a mailbox exists. Also, it adds the :create argument to the fileinto command, which makes sure that the target folder is created before saving is attempted. Of course, this is only useful when deliver is used with the -n option. There wasn't a great need for this extension, but I could use it in the test suite and it was almost trivial to implement. In other news, I have further developed the sieve-filter command line tool. It is getting closer to a usable state, being able to filter a large number of messages in an existing mailbox, but its use is currently still very much discouraged as it tends to be very good at eating mailboxes when the user is less attentive. It needs more command line configuration options, a simulation mode to perform a dry run, and a man page that describes its use and its dangers. Changelog for Sieve v0.1.10: * Changed action execution of fileinto and keep. These changes depend on API additions in Dovecot, making this release depend on Dovecot v1.2.2 or newer. * Further developed the sieve-filter command line tool. This required a few changes to the action execution of the Sieve engine. The tool was successfully tested on folders with a few 100k spam messages. However, the commandline options are still incomplete, a man page is missing and it needs much more testing before I can recommend anyone to use this tool. + Added support for the mailbox extension. This allows checking whether a mailbox exists using the mailboxexists command and it adds the :create argument to the fileinto command to create the mailbox when it is missing. The :create feature is useless unless the Deliver LDA is run with the -n option. + Improved the testsuite with tests for message delivery. Messages stored using keep and fileinto can be fed back into the Sieve engine for verification. This includes testing of applied IMAP flags. + Updated the man pages with the new method of specifying the supported extensions using + and - (for the -x parameter of the sieve tools) + Further developed the deprecated notify extension. A dummy for the denotify command exists, meaning that its use does not cause an error anymore. - Fixed a bug in the derivation of the binary path from the script path. A bare filename would yield a path relative to root. - Fixed a bug in the value matching code. The context data now uses a proper pool in stead of the data stack. Bug reported by Jan Sechser. - Fixed assertion fail in the include extension caused by missing initialization upon binary load. This bug surfaces only for stored binaries. Bug reported by Tom Hendrikx. - Fixed include error message for failed :global include. It mentioned the wrong config parameter. - Fixed broken wiki reference in an error message of the plugin about the 'sieve' setting. - Fixed behavior of fileinto when delivering into a namespace prefix. Previous fix used the wrong storage. Yes, the configuration seems odd or interesting as you said. The idea behind this is: - Before scripts will be use for filtering spam, when they have SPAM header. Not problem at it. - User scripts will be used for vacation messages. These are created with Squirrelmail and avelsize plugin (user interaction) - After scripts will be used for doing redirections, such as forwarding mail to a blackberry account(not problem at it) or forwarding to another user account (in the same domain, the problem is here). The reason not to put the redirections or forwarding in users scripts is to avoid users deleting redirections and have in one file all the redirections. I also try to use redirections from avelsieve plugin (0.9.9.9) and it works the forwarding but it didn't work the keep command, the mail is forwarded but the user doesn't have a copy of it. I will investigate your advice for envelope or try to use user's scripts. I didn't know about original headers, if this in RFC sieve documents? Thanks Timo and thanks Stephan for the tips. Greetings, i am testing: - dovecot-1.2-sieve-0.1.11 - dovecot 1.2.3 - dovecot-1.2-managesieve-0.11.8 (with patch) I am trying to use sieve_after to execute some redirection of mails. [Dovecot] Very long establishment time for secondary connections

Hello, I'm currently on Dovecot 1.1.17 and I have a user that runs into a problem quite a lot. She's using Thunderbird on a Mac. When she sends mail, Thunderbird is set up to save sent mail to her Sent folder. Often (usually when she has not sent another mail for a long while) when she sends mail, Thunderbird sits there saying "Copying message to Sent folder" for about thirty seconds. My best guess, after looking at dovecot messages in syslog related to her login, is that Thunderbird is using a secondary imap process to do this copying and this connection times out due to inactivity, so that when she sends mail it has to reestablish itself. For some reason this reestablishment seems to take a very long time, even though her initial login/connection when she opens Thunderbird is very fast. I looked for a way to increase the inactivity time in dovecot.conf but didn't see one. I don't know of any other user that has this problem, which makes me suspicious of her client rather than Dovecot. Pretty much everyone is using Thunderbird, although she's the only one using it on a Mac. Is it possible/likely that it takes so long because for some reason Thunderbird on a Mac doesn't notice that the second connection has died and is taking a long time trying to use the first invalid connection before reestablishment? Or is it likely that this is a Dovecot problem and I simply haven't figured out what's going on, yet? All help very much appreciated. Thanks, Jeff

Good afternoon, I am considering to upgrade from Dovecot 1.1.18 to 1.2.x and was reading your Wiki regarding any changes and found: "If you were using e.g. mail_location = maildir:/var/mail/%h, just change it to mail_location = maildir:%h and add /var/mail/ prefix to home dirs." I am currently using: "mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir" in combination with vpopmail. Does this need to be changed? or is ~/Maildir considered an absolute directory? Hello I have installed Dovecot as a POP3 server, IMAP on my internal network, the authentication against Windows Active Directory. I would like to know how to setup a second server dovecot as my proxy server for external users outside the network, in another segment of different IP addresses, or at least define which mailboxes will be stored on another server to be accessible to both servers. I have reviewed the document on the wiki site, but I said that is only possible with mysql authentication, but as I said the road where the messages are stored, it is possible for NFS? Thanks Michel

I know that I can use imapsync (perhaps this is the proper way) But I was just wondering, if I can just run Rsync to do that transfer: Will I run against some incompatibility formats between these two versions? [Dovecot] QUOTA not appearing in CAPA

Hi, ok, I've compiled it a few times, and made sure all of my settings are correct, but the QUOTA is not appearing in the opening CAPA that comes with the greeting. Hello, Dovecot. Does dovecot sieve supports variable extension (rfc5229)? It is very useful for users with large amount of mailing lists, as it allows to write only one rule for all lists (filtering by List-Id). If it is not supported, is here any plans to support it? Greetings all, I'll skip the details of the setup, except to say that it has a non-standard (and non-templateable) home directory path for virtual users. Ran into the following problem when a debian (possibly from backports) packaged dovecot-1.1.2 was upgraded to a dovecot-1.1.13-2~bpo50+1 (definately from backports): sieve-storage: root directory specified by mail data does not exist: ~/Maildir After some analysis, it would appear that ManageSieve (looks like 0.10.4 is included in the debian backports) doesn't do the tilde expansion before doing a stat test to see if the ~/Maildir exists. Hello I have installed Dovecot as a POP3 server, IMAP on my internal network, the authentication against Windows Active Directory. I would like to know how to setup a second server dovecot as my proxy server for external users outside the network, in another segment of different IP addresses, or at least define which mailboxes will be stored on another server to be accessible to both servers. I have reviewed the document on the wiki site, but I said that is only possible with mysql authentication, but as I said the road where the messages are stored, it is possible for NFS? Searched archive, but failed to find... :-( "deliver" does not honor user_global_* from dovecot-ldap.conf or userdb static{} also it looks like delivery attempts being made to %n/Maildir/cur ?? one other curious thing, use of ${recipient} in master.cf|deliver command causes the "passdb ldap" lookups to be completely ignored? only checks passdb and ignores userdb compleletely? IF I put noel(at)metc(dot)net into passwd.dovecot using passdb flatfile, auth and delivery seem to work. Thanks for any direction. I lament I couldn't get farther on my own. Hello all, I've got a test environment setup in preparation for a move from qmail/vpopmail/courier to postfix/padmin/dovecot. I have a number of questions that seem to span multiple pieces of software, and this is one of them... Our policy with spam filtering is that a user should be able to turn it off (ie: not put tagged spam into a spam folder, but deliver to their inbox) if they want to. Currently qmailadmin and a custom squirrelmail plugin give people the option to do this by dumping a .qmail file in their directory that calls a common maildrop script that will deliver spam to the spam folder. It looks like I can emulate this with sieve and something that can speak to Dovecot's managesieve server. Where I'm stuck is that if I want users to be able to do other custom filtering using sieve, how do I go about making sure that my common spam delivery rule does not get clobbered? This really has me a bit stumped. I see there's a global sieverc that can be included, but I need something along the lines of a per-user include that brings in the spam filtering rule that will "stick" until the user explicitly deletes it. I've been seeing lots of index cache file errors (using mbox on Solaris 8 sparc 64-bit, but with 32-bit Dovecot) since I switched my account to Dovecot 1.2.0 (we're still on 1.0.15 mostly, but I'm hoping to upgrade to 1.1.17+ this summer, or 1.2.x if it's stable enough). e.g. Error: Corrupted index cache file <path>/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index.cache: field index too large (47 >= 25) I've tried renaming/removing the .imap/INBOX directory, but the "Corrupted index cache file" errors return within a day or so. Hello Has anyone else problems with Dovecot 1.2.3? For clients such as Thunderbird, Outlook 2007 everything works perfect. When I use an iPhone the child process is killed: Aug 11 08:08:44 imap-login: Info: Login: user=<username>, method=PLAIN,rip=1.2.3.4, lip=4.3.2.1, TLS Aug 11 08:08:44 dovecot: Error: child 5382 (imap) killed with signal 11 (core dumps disabled) Currently I have downgraded again to the working 1.2. I wonder if this problem is known or anyone is looking for it.

[Dovecot] RFC: Storing indexes in a (remote) database to increase dovecot scalability

Hi all, This is just an idea I had over the weekend; I was wondering if instead of storing the indexes/caches on disk, it would be possible to have an option to store them in a remote database (eg mysql). There are several issues that we currently have with scaling dovecot, and I think that if it could store indexes in an external database we could alleviate most of these issues. In no particular order: 1) One major issue we have with dovecot is the number of iops it requires to keep its files in sync on our big disk arrays. If this were a mysql database, we'd have better ways of keeping these in sync, for example switching the speed at which it flushes the updates to disk, growth using partitioning/sharding, read-only slave instances etc, specific ssd storage for indexes/caches. I know that we could create a separate ssd disk array and export that over nfs too, but see issue (2) below. If indexes were stored in a mysql database we could choose to have a different reliability for the indexes (ie if the database server crashes we have 1 second of index changes lost, whereas for the email itself we can ensure it is always kept in sync on our other disk arrays). 2) nfs locking issues. No matter how hard we try, we always find there are some issues with concurrency over nfs. It really doesn't seem designed to handle these issues very well. I've not tried with nfsv4 and I believe there are some improvements there, but at the same time nfs wasn't really designed to store databases and have heavy concurrency. A proper database server (eg mysql, postgres) on the other hand thrives in this type of environment, especially when coupled with a transactional storage backend such as innodb which includes support for deadlock handling etc. 3) As we store all of our mail systems over nfs, effectively each export is a single-threaded connection to the server. No matter how fast the central nfs server you can realistically not go above 10k nfs ops/sec on the fastest of local networks due to latency issues. With mysql you could have multiple parallel connections to the central database store (1 per process?) which would mean more nfs ops available for actually serving the files. 4) Caching. Much more tuneable on a database server than in a filesystem. Eg in mysql there are loads of options to tune the various innodb/query/key caches, on nfs there are very few even on advanced netapps etc I know some of you store all your indexes on a single server locally & then store the emails on a remote central filestore. Whilst this is a good idea, it doesn't scale very well in that if the one server fails then everything has to be reindexed as clients login which causes incredible load as dovecot has to re-read most of the messages (in pop3 mode at least) in order to work out size counts etc. In my experience this reindexing would take out our email system for the best part of a day. I'm sure we could set something up with drbd mirroring or a central san array with ssd's for the index data, but this intrinsically does not scale with as much ease as a replicating database cluster could. There are also failover issues which can be very easily solved with a database system (eg mysql with an active/passive dual-master setup). Also, I know that most of these points refer to nfs; and I know that there are alternative methods (eg san + gfs or some other scalable filesystem) however most of these are relatively new technologies whereas nfs is pretty much the standard for remote file storage; certainly I'd consider it a lot more reliable when compared to the likes of gfs or lustre. Your typical large scale mail setup would be over nfs and this is the sort of environment that I've run into these scaling issues in. I've heard that gfs also doesn't work very well with 'hot spots' which indexes tend to be, although I've no first hand experience of this. So, although this post only really mentions nfs & mysql (the two technologies that I'm most familiar with) I think this is a much more general problem so I'm not advocating the use of either technology apart from them being most people's first choices for ease of use. What I'm really proposing is a way to separate the two different types of data that dovecot uses. Indexes&caches contain small frequent transactions; and whilst these are relatively important, dropping the past few seconds of these transactions doesn't seriously matter. On the other hand emails are larger, infrequently changed & it's important they are kept fully in sync - if we accept a message it should be guaranteed that we don't loose it. At the end of the day it seems to me that a filesystem is the ideal place to store emails, whereas a database server would be the ideal place to store indexes/caches. Obviously for speed of setup, simply storing everything on a filesystem is easy so I'm not suggesting that we abandon this route, but for truly large infrastructures I think being able to use a database system would have significant advantages in each of these four areas. Any thoughts? I would like 'some process' to store old mails at a cheap storage. I know how to do it with symlinks, but I don´t know if it is the best option. So, I´m asking if dovecot improves it somehow. Even though compression and many storages, we always have problems with disk space and need to migrate accounts. Have you ever implemented any archive solution working with dovecot ? Good day all, [Dovecot version 1.2.1] I've set up postfix and dovecot on Centos. I have a problem with the mail, it is begin received but not "processed" by dovecot. I've looked in the maillog file and found two problems; the first is that private/dovecot directory (I think it should be a directory) did not exist and the second problem is "mail transport unavailable". I've create a directory called /var/spool/postfix/private/dovecot but I get the following error in the log file: Connection refused (Is this an ownership issue? I've made the owner postfix) As for the second problem, I've spend the most of the past 3 days googling the error and found very little "useful" information. Do I need to supply more info? Hello Dovecot users, Apart from unfinished development of the date extension, this is a set of bug-fix releases. A few portability issues were found, a few stupidities were fixed and the ManageSieve proxy now also works with TLS. Most notably, the include extension had an issue regarding the expansion of $HOME in the personal include path. I've built a project site at: http://pigeonhole.dovecot.org Changelog Sieve v0.1.11: + Built skeleton implementation for the date extension (RFC5260). It compiles, but it does not do anything useful yet. Therefore, it is not part of the default compilation. - Fixed ARM portability issues caused by char type not being signed on that platform. Reading optional operands from a binary would fail for action side effects. Also, an accidental mixup of an int return type with bool caused the interpreter to continue on ARM even though an error occured. - Removed direct stdint.h includes to prevent portability issues. - Fixed segfault bug in the handling of script open failures. - Include: improved user error messages and system log messages. - Fixed copy-paste mixup between sieve_after and sieve_before settings in the LDA Sieve plugin. If only a sieve_after script was active, nothing would have been executed. Patch by Mike Abbott. - Include: fixed a bug in HOME substitution in the sieve_dir path. Surfaced in ManageSieve. Changelog ManageSieve v0.11.8: - Fixed TLS support for proxying ManageSieve. The protocol state machine was incorrect. Also added a check that disables ssl when 'starttls' is not enabled for the user. This produces a proper warning in the log file. There is no such thing as a managesieveS protocol which has SSL from the start. Hello list, We are using virtual plugin for to provide users two additional folders: Company/all - it contains all messages in user's mailbox Company/favorites - here is flagged messages. Here is namespace part of config file: namespace private { prefix = Company/ separator = / location = virtual:/var/mail/virtual:INDEX=MEMORY:LAYOUT=maildir++ subscriptions = no } Everything works fine, but problem arises when someone rename or delete virtual mailbox. With above config, 1 user make changes to his mailbox, but changes distribute for entire domain. First, I have tried to add :CONTROL=/data/mail/%d/%n/data/virtual to location part of virtual namespace, but I have no luck with such settings. Directory /data/mail/%d/%n/data/virtual not even been created. Then I tried to setup ACL for virtual mailbox. Adding "acl" to mail_plugins in imap and lda section and acl=vfile to plugins config. Unfortunately, VPN is not available (not all clients support VPN), so I will have to expose the imaps port to the Internet. My question is: how reliable is Dovecot in such a setup? I am not talking about encryption (protecting the traffic between server and client). I am talking about having the daemon exposed to anything coming in from the Internet, buffer overflows and stuff like that. The uid/gid appears to be that of my own ssh account which is not connected to the mail account that I wish to simply access as a virtual user. This is a basic setup for the time being, until I get my head around it, but any pointers would be really appreciated. Hi! I'm gonna need to use dovecot's auth-client socket in an authentication program. Now the auth-client socket is only used by my MTA, which is postfix. Because postfix's smtpd process (which uses the auth-client socket) runs chrooted under postfix's spool directory, I must create the auth-client socket under that spool directory. However, to reach that socket from another chrooted program is impossible. Can I create multiple instances of auth-client sockets? I tried to define another client {} stanza in socket listen {} in dovecot.conf, but only the last client socket got created. I need only a true or false response from dovecot regarding the authentication, and I thought that this is exactly what auth-client socket will do. However, if I can not reach it, is there any alternative to this? What's up with the auth-master or auth-worker sockets? Are they capable of respond to an auth request too? btw, I'm running dovecot-1.2.3 Thanks! [Dovecot] Creating a "default" domain

Hello, I'm setting up a test server to work through the issues involved in bringing a bunch of vpopmail/qmail/courier users into a postfix/dovecot server. So far I'm seeing lots of info to aid in the transition. One thing I'm lost on is that since Dovecot is providing all the auth mechanisms rather than vpopmail, I'm not sure how to emulate a particular vpopmail behavior we rely on. Vpopmail allows for the concept of a "default" domain for authentication. So if I have a bunch of domains, and one is "example.com", users in that domain can login with only the username part of their id (ie: "john") rather than supplying the domain (ie: "john(a)example.com"). I need to continue to offer this unless I want to walk a few hundred users through reconfiguring their mail clients. :) Any pointers? [Dovecot] All mail in mbox disappears when using Outlook

I thought I was imaging it but... I have a friend (honestly) that likes to clear his inbox every month by copying older into a folder (e.g. June-2009). Every month he complains that all the mail in the new folder has disappeared. This has happened three times now, and he's sort-of-right. I now believe it's a bug rather than him. The setup is Dovecot 1.1.3 on FreeBSD 7.0 and the client is Outlook 2003 SP3 (using IMAP). What you end up with is a folder called June-2009 with no messages visible. Outlook reckons it's completely empty - size 0. I don't know how he gets to this point, but it can't be anything that bizarre - just copying messages. It's happened three months in a row. However, he can't see the contents and I can't see the contents using Outlook. Strangely, Eudora and Squirrel have no problem. Corrupt mbox file? Probably not. If you copy the problem one, the copy works fine. The really weird thing is that if you rename the problem file (using mv) it STILL DOESN'T work. I've considered the possibility that it's got a bad lock on it, but if so, how come Squirrel and Eudora have no problem? I've searched as far as I can for any known problems using Outlook. What next? Hi Timo, the preconditions was: a dbox converted (convert-tool) from Maildir contents of dbox/mailboxes/INBOX/dbox-Mails was: - dovecot.index.log [64876 bytes] - dovecot-uidlist [167280 bytes] - 3237 mails I've started mutt to see the mails. Mutt lost the connection immediately. The log shows nothing strange except for: dovecot: Error: child 12136 (imap) killed with signal 11 (core dumped) Each time i try to connect to dovecot imap crashes. The first backtrace is attached. [Dovecot] hoping someone has a suggestion

Hi using dovecot 1.0.10 with pop/imap, using maildir, with 2000+ users mostly using pop but many using imap. Once in a great while I have problems with dovecot pop timing out. If I telnet to port 110 it just takes forever to come up or it doesn't at all, the samething happens on the imap port although 110 is always worst. At 1st when troubleshooting I was not sure what was causing the situation and when I ran out of options I stopped postfix. When I did this dovecot immediately started working again, that is port 110/143 came up fast and all the user logins were fast again. When I restarted postfix after a minute or so dovecot became slow again. While observing this situation I notice that postfix had most of the connections about 300+ in established state, while dovecot was using around 150 connections. After adjusting some of the parameters on postfix and shutting it down multiple times, suddenly everything worked but this time postfix was reporting over 3000 connections mostly in TIME_WAIT state which is normal for us. My question is what do you guys think is happening here, what is the relationship between dovecot/postfix that would cause this to happen. [Dovecot] Trying to get dovecot and squirrelmail talking

I have been using dovecot+squirrelmail with no problems on my Fedora box (currently at F10). I've been using a simple mail location string along the lines of 'mbox:~/usr/mail/%u:INBOX=mbox:/var/spool/mail/%u' (sorry, that's off the top of my head, I can't get into my box from here at the moment). Essentially: standard mbox inbox in /var/spool/mail/[user], plus mbox files under ~/usr/mail. These latter are for remote access to archived Thunderbird files, which are [currently] mbox format. This works fine. However, I've had some slight issues elsewhere which I feel would be eased or solved by making my INBOX use maildir format, and keeping mails I want to remote-access more often in the top level maildir there (instead of always having to dip into the TB mboxes). To that end, I tried setting up: # want to be able to add sibling and child folders here namespace private { separator = / prefix = location = /var/spool/mail/%u inbox = yes hidden = no list = yes } # And the legacy mbox files go here under 'local' namespace private { separator = / prefix = local/ location = mbox:~/usr/mail hidden = no list = yes } (with appropriate an procmail change for maildir delivery) Now, this pretty much worked the way I wanted. However, afterwards, trying to connect from squirrelmail I had it say that there were no [IMAP] folders to subscribe to, including the INBOX. I couldn't se any errors, either in /var/log/maillog or http's logs. Have I got something wrong? [Dovecot] Dovecot deliver uidlist issues

Hi all, Lets say I have a maildir which doesn't contain any dovecot files but has some emails lying around in it. If I add a message to this mailbox using deliver, dovecot creates the uidlist file with a single entry (the message that was just delivered). When I then log in to the mailbox, all the other messages are added into the uidlist file in the normal order (directory list order I believe). Then, the mailbox is in a situation where anything that was delivered into the mailbox before the user logs in is at the very top of a uidlist. Unfortunately many webmail clients seem to order the mailbox by reverse uidl, so we get the situation where people log into webmail (we use @mail) after their mailboxes have been migrated to dovecot and any messages delivered between the time of migration and the time of login are put to the very end of the list. This could presumably be fixed by ordering the mailbox according to date but certainly @mail doesn't really do this very well. I've only tested this on v1.1 (1.1.17 from atrpms), but I didn't see anything in the changelog to indicate that this deliver behaviour has changed in v1.2. Perhaps there should be a deliver option to recreate the uidlist file by doing a full scan if it doesn't exist (as a login via pop/imap would do), although I'm not sure why this shouldn't be the default? (apart from deliever potentially causing a high amount of io). My current work-around is to use postlogin to remove the uidlist file when someone logs in to the mailbox for the first time which then forces it to be created in the correct order; but this is a very messy solution. hi, I am trying to get a webbased IMAP mail module to work. http://nocc.sourceforge.net/ But it seems it doesn't connect to it. When i try to login it says: "login is not allowed for connection" i guess it has to do with the settings of the conf file. I have dovecot installed on Centos and installed it with yum. All (basic)settings are usually set correctly during install. After trying hard still no login. So i am hoping you guys can help me out. Hello list, My question: is sieve support some kind of "continue" action, to explicit tell server processing rules below current one(if current has triged)? Situation: I have few rules, which fileinto's to different directories. All is working fine, but if I want redirect all my mail for some period of time to another mailbox, I'm adding rule like this, to be processing first. if anyof (true) { redirect "koshikov(a)gmail.com"; keep; } Mail redirecting, but keep state store messages to INBOX. All I want - to process other rules, which will move message to the right imap directory. This situation also happens with vacation sieve-action. In sieve rfc I didn't find any workaround to that actions. Maybe someone know how to make sieve working in described way?

[Dovecot] deliver is curious

Hi, Im' using deliver with postfix (mailbox_command = /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver -n -m "$EXTENSION"). In dovecot.conf I've set mail_location to maildir:/var/spool/imap/users/%u/Maildir It works, but not for ONE "special" email. If I send mail to e.g. th(a)trg-oha.de it gets correctly delivered (see noerror.txt), but I have one mail with an attachment (i cannot provide it because of privacy reasons) where i get the attached error. [Dovecot] Deliver LDA versus vdelivermail

Good morning all, I have a question. Due to my interest in the Sieve plug-in. I'm considering to change the LDA on my production servers from 'vdelivermail' from vpopmail to 'deliver' from Dovecot. However I'm not sure how to go about doing this or whether there are any conversion issues that I should be aware of. Currently my /var/qmail/control/defaultdelivery is set to "./Maildir/". I am assuming I have to set that to: "|/var/qmail/bin/preline -f /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver -d $EXT@$USER" Does it also mean I have to recreate all .qmail and .qmail-default files? I am moving away from Cyrus, I'm trying to migrate to Dovecot. I am trying to get Sieve working with Dovecot and Postfix and it just won't work. Postfix is able to delived new messages to the "new" subfolder of the inbox structure. After I run Thunderbird, the new message gets moved to "cur" and it shows up in my inbox. So far so good. But now I'm trying to add Sieve. I turned on managesieve, installed Avelsieve in Squirrelmail, and did some tests. No matter what, the message stays in the inbox, it does not move to the designated folder: Postfix throws it in "new", it gets moved to "cur" after accessing my email with Thunderbird, and that's it. So until then, testing this RC is appreciated and hopefully we'll have a good release this time. :) + Allow namespace prefix to be opened as mailbox, if a mailbox already exists in the root dir. - Maildir: dovecot-uidlist was being recreated every time a mailbox was accessed, even if nothing changed. - listescape plugin was somewhat broken - Compiling fixes for non-Linux/BSDs

Hello list, after upgrading dovecot from 1.0.15 to 1.2.2 (and carefully reading through the upgrading notes in the wiki), I got sieve, quota and fts up and running, but I'm now suffering some kind of performance problem with the STATUS command. Symptoms: Reading mail on the IMAP server itself with "mutt", no TLS/SSL, connected through loopback interface.
