[Dovecot] high imap load on large folders
by Ingo Thierack 11 Sep '09

11 Sep '09

Hello, i sync with imapsync from an archiopteryx-server to an dovecot-server, for testing until now. The dovecot is inside an VM. storage for mail is on an nfs-share, indexes are local. What i now see, is, on large folder( 58000 messages and more) the load on the imap-process is very high, and slowdown the transferprocess. Is there something, I can do. Whats cause the high load ind the imap-process. Here are the configuration, and below, a partial strace # 1.2.4: /opt/dovecot/etc/dovecot.conf # OS: Linux 2.6.18-128.1.14.el5 i686 CentOS release 5.3 (Final) nfs base_dir: /var/run/dovecot/ [Dovecot] New need to delete dovecot-acl-list in dovecot 1.2?
by Adam McDougall 10 Sep '09

10 Sep '09

I just started testing 1.2.3 then 1.2.4 this week, I was too busy earlier in the year to look at 1.2 at all. So far so good except I noticed newly granted permissions via ACL on some newly created public mailboxes were not visible by the client. It seemed to be a version thing because the same files work fine concurrently on a server running 1.1.x. I came across this in the ACLwiki which seems to fix it: List cache dovecot-acl-list file lists all mailboxes that have "l" rights assigned. If you manually add/edit dovecot-acl files, you may need to delete the dovecot-acl-list to get the mailboxes visible. I don't ever recall needing to do this before, and it sounds similar to this which I have had set to 10 for a long time: # cache_secs parameter # specifies how many seconds to wait between stat()ing dovecot-acl file # to see if it changed. All of my dovecot-acl files are symlinks so hopefully it runs stat() on the target, but just in case I tried recreating the symlink afterwards but it didn't help and its over NFS so who knows if the running dovecot 'saw' it. Do I need to debug this behavior further or will I just have to live with remembering to delete the dovecot-acl-list file when I manually change dovecot-acl contents? Thanks.

[Dovecot] Odd/Incorrect Quota Reporting on Dovecot 1.2.4 & FreeBSD4
by Siraj 'Sid' Rakhada 10 Sep '09

10 Sep '09

Hi, Am seeing an odd problem on an old FreeBSD 4.11 box that I'm trying to get courier off, and dovecot on. At the same time, I'm trying to put some fairly simple quota support on, but getting very odd results. I think it might be better described with the log below, but, the gist of it is this: I have set a 1GB quota, and I was getting intermittent reports on the quota usage - sometimes at the correct usage (300MB or so), and then at some crazy amount over the quota usage. I can get it to be consistently incorrect though, as displayed with the below log. The maildirsize is correct, and matches closely to 'du' output, it's simply coming through incorrect on IMAP. It also only seems to happen if the maildirsize is not created before the first 'getquota[root]' command occurs. I think it's something to do with dovecot + FreeBSD (at least, this version)! I've done a quick test on a Debian box, and I don't have the same problem. Anyone else have any ideas what could be going wrong on this FreeBSD box? Is it worth me giving the dovecot -n output at this stage? It happens on different mailboxes too, this is just a sample. Thanks! ----- information & log follow # /usr/local/dovecot/sbin/dovecot --version 1.2.4 # uname -a FreeBSD server1.domain 4.11-RELEASE-p13 FreeBSD 4.11-RELEASE-p13 #5: Wed Oct 12 18:02:46 BST 2005 root@server1.domain:/usr/obj/build/src/sys/FBSD410RELENG i386 # cat maildirsize 1073741824S 304806180 16002 Attempt 1: . [Dovecot] Password & Authentication schemes to comply with postfixadmin
by bsd 09 Sep '09

09 Sep '09

Hello, I am using the latest version of Dovecot on a FreeBSD box. I am trying to figure out which password scheme to use to comply with my database backend which is administered by "postfix admin". Here is an example of the password that can be generated in the database using the various encryption schemes available in postfix admin: $1$a733fb07$/g1h6opQxemdWUtzD2/kQ. --> md5crypt 25f9e794323b453885f5181f1b624d0b --> md5 acFhkap78XB2I --> system I am not certain I have understood very well how things all feet together… I have tried to modify the various options in dovecot-mysql.conf in order to comply with these settings: I have updated "default_pass_scheme" to "PLAIN-MD5, DIGEST-MD5, and CRYPT" but none of this seems to work. Do I have to modify something in dovecot.conf? For the moment I have these settings: auth default { mechanisms = plain login passdb sql { args = /usr/local/etc/dovecot-mysql.conf } userdb sql { args = /usr/local/etc/dovecot-mysql.conf } socket listen { client { path = /var/spool/postfix/private/auth mode = 0660 user = postfix group = postfix } } } The main idea is simply not to have cleatext passwd in the DB. Thanks for your support. ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Gregober ---> PGP ID --> 0x1BA3C2FD bsd @at@ todoo.biz ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ P "Please consider your environmental responsibility before printing this e-mail"

[Dovecot] LDA does not read quota from userdb's extra fields
by Tim Chen 09 Sep '09

09 Sep '09

The version I use is dovecot 1.2.4 My config in dovecot.conf protocol imap { mail_plugins = quota imap_quota mail_log } protocol lda { mail_plugins = quota } userdb passwd-file { args = /etc/dovecot.userdb } quota = maildir quota_rule = *:storage=100MB /etc/dovecot.userdb user1:*:2001:2001::/ms/user1::userdb_quota_rule=*:storage=300M And in postfix/main.cf mailbox_command = /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver I wish to have a global quota 100MB for all the users and using /etc/dovecot.userdb to specify larger quota(300MB) for some vip users. IMAP works normally as expected, using the following command will report correct quota. a login user1 pass1 user1 getquotaroot INBOX However, it seems LDA treat all users the same quota (100MB), and when trying to send mails to those vip users(300MB), it will reject the email and report "552 Requested mailbox exceeds quota. (in reply to RCPT TO command))" My speculation is LDA forget the read 'extra fields' from userdb, would you please help to verify it? Thanks very much for your help. Sincerely, Tim Chen

[Dovecot] changing location of index files
by suzuki 09 Sep '09

Hello, I think changing index files location of mail_location setting to reduce disk I/O. by adding "INDEX=/var/index/%d/%1n/%n" to mail_location like below, mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir:INDEX=/var/index/%d/%1n/%n Will this change cause any problems or data loss to existing pop3 users? Re: [Dovecot] FTS Plugin design
by rui.carneiro＠portugalmail.net 09 Sep '09

09 Sep '09

Hi again! After sometime using my changes on this plugin I found one major problem. When a message have two attachments with same name or one with content-type equal to "message/*", my solr schema design does not work because as attachment unique identifier I used attachment's name what is not correct. Now I am trying to find a way to know the mime part id of the parts used on fts_build_mail. Is that already possible or I need to do that by my own? Thank you in advance, Rui Carneiro

[Dovecot] The usage of dovecot-uidvalidity* files?
by Tim Chen 09 Sep '09

09 Sep '09

After installing a new server with dovecot 1.2.4, I found there is some new dovecot-uidvalidity* files in user's Maildir directory. However, I did not see such files in other servers with dovecot 1.1.2 (around 2008/07). What is function of those files? What will happen if I delete that files? I am curious why need to keep 2 files: dovecot-uidvalidity dovecot-uidvalidity.4aa4fa4c since the content of dovecot-uidvalidity is '4aa4fa4c' why do we need extra files? Thanks Timo for providing the wonderful dovecot software! Hope you don't mind my stupid questions. Sincerely, Tim Chen

[Dovecot] compression script for use with zlib module
by Leonardo Rodrigues 09 Sep '09

09 Sep '09

Hi, I'm wondering if someone already implemented a compression script (and would like to share it) based on the step-by-step provided on wiki page of Zlib module. I can already do some find|xargs gzip .... but couldnt implement it completly as described on the wiki page. I know the suggested step-by-step is very detailed and probably a must simplier will be enough for almost anyone .... anyway, if someone have the full script and would like to share it, i would be glad to get it :) http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Zlib 1) Find the mails you want to compress in a single maildir. 2) Compress the mails to tmp/ * Update the compressed files' mtimes to be the same as they were in the original files (e.g. touch command) 3) Run maildirlock <path> <timeout>. It writes PID to stdout, save it. * <path> is path to the Maildir's dovecot-uidlist (the control directory, if it's separate) * <timeout> specifies how long to wait for the lock before failing. 4) If maildirlock grabbed the lock successfully (exit code 0) you can continue. 5) For each mail you compressed: 1. Verify that it still exists where you last saw it. 2. If it doesn't exist, delete the compressed file. Its flags may have been changed or it may have been expunged. This happens rarely, so just let the next run handle it. 3. If the file does exist, rename() (mv) the compressed file over the original file. * Dovecot can now read the file, but to avoid compressing it again on the next run, you'll probably want to rename it again to include e.g. a "Z" flag in the file name to mark that it was compressed (e.g. 1223212411.M907959P17184.host,S=3271:2,SZ). Remember that the Maildir specifications require that the flags are sorted by their ASCII value, although Dovecot itself doesn't care about that. 6) Unlock the maildir by sending a TERM signal to the maildirlock process (killing the PID it wrote to stdout). -- Atenciosamente / Sincerily, Leonardo Rodrigues Solutti Tecnologia http://www.solutti.com.br Minha armadilha de SPAM, NÃO mandem email gertrudes(a)solutti.com.br My SPAMTRAP, do not email it

Hi, I wonder if some users are using this plugin on production setups. If yes, how does it perform in terms of cpu load compared with the same setup without compression ? Thanks Laurent

[Dovecot] Using Dovecot code in a non-LGPL package
by Asheesh Laroia 08 Sep '09

08 Sep '09

Hi Timo (and all!), Venaktesh is a friend of mine working on a patch to the venerable Alpine mail reader so it can read Maildir format mailboxes on disk. Venkatesh wanted to know if he could use some code from Dovecot's lib-storage (safely opening/reading Maildirs, including accounting for NFS and ESTALE) and the UID->message mapping code. This way, Dovecot and Alpine would agree on how to handle UIDs for a given Maildir-format mailbox. Plus Alpine could benefit from the thought you've put into the safety of Maildirs on IMAP (which is *not* trivial!). But there are some possible licensing issues. Alpine (formerly known as PINE) is now licensed under the Apache License 2.0. As far as I can tell, if he wants to contribute a patch back to Alpine upstream, he should use use the Apache License 2.0. But Dovecot is licensed under LGPL 2.1; if he takes Dovecot code, modifies it, and mixes it with Alpine, that would not be allowed by the licenses together (as I understand it). The Apache License 2.0 is a permissive, non-copyleft license like the MIT License, but it adds a patent retaliation clause. See http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0.html for its text and http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/license-list.html for a short statement of its compatibility with GPLv3; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apache_License#GPL_compatibility has a little more. License-wise, there are two choices, if you're willing Timo: the modified Dovecot code could be released under GPLv3, which *is* compatible with the Alpine license - it would just mean Alpine+Maildir would be GPLv3 when put together. Or you could grant a special permission to Venkatesh to distribute the modified Dovecot code under the Apache License 2.0. Timo (and others), what do you think? The past of least resistance is to say that a derivative work of Dovecot can be made using GPLv3; the most convenient would be to say that particular portions can be used under the Apache License 2.0. -- Asheesh. -- Why do we have two eyes? [Dovecot] Unusual IMAP config.
by S. A. Woltering 08 Sep '09

08 Sep '09

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi all, perhaps a silly question, perhaps an unusual one, I don't know. I'm trying to suss out how to set up Dovecot in such a way as to have two separate IMAP services running on the same system. To explain. We have an "internally-facing" IMAP and an "externally-facing" one. It's policy that anyone connecting to IMAP from outside uses a stronger authentication method than the default internal one. The current system uses the standard imap/imaps ports for internal auth, but a different port-pair for external access. (actually it's a bit more complex than that, but that's all I really need to go into for this exercise!) So, for example, I'd like to kick off a test rig that uses IMAP on port 143 using a standard password (file or NIS) auth and to set up another on port, say 144 using PAM. Can this be done within one single dovecot.conf, or should I be running two separate daemons? [Dovecot] avoiding DoS
by David Halik 07 Sep '09

07 Sep '09

Hi, I was just looking for some advice on avoiding getting DoS'd from brute force log in attempts. We came in this morning to find that one of our Solaris 9 dovecot severs had wedged overnight due to a brute force connection attempt to pop3 from Brasil. In the span of about 15 seconds we received 342 connection auth attempts from the same IP: Sep 3 00:10:51 xxxxx dovecot: [ID 583609 mail.info] auth(default): new auth connection: pid=16862 Sep 3 00:10:51 xxxxx dovecot: [ID 583609 mail.info] auth(default): new auth connection: pid=16863 Sep 3 00:10:51 xxxxx dovecot: [ID 583609 mail.info] pop3-login: Login failed: Plaintext authentication disabled: rip=189.99.178.15, lip=xxxxx Sep 3 00:10:51 xxxxx dovecot: [ID 583609 mail.info] pop3-login: Aborted login (tried to use disabled plaintext auth): rip=189.99.178.15, lip=xxxxx Dovecot finally wedged silently and without complaint, becoming completely unresponsive. I had to kill -9 it this morning in order to restart the service. Once possibility I considered was that the dovecot user process limit was reached, but this is set to 1024, and I didn't see any errors or warnings anywhere in the logs. login_max_processes_count = 256 max_mail_processes = 1024 With the above I would think it would have been able to handle it gracefully, but apparently it did not. ulimit -n 2048 is also set on dovecot startup for the fd limit. Any suggestions on what I could tweak to prevent this from happening in the future? dovecot -n output: Note I upgraded to 1.2.4 this morning while it was already down. [Dovecot] assertion failed while using sieve
by Maciej Uhlig 07 Sep '09

07 Sep '09

Hi, there is a line in TODO: "- sieve-cmu.c crash: i_assert(buf->used - 1 == part->body_size.physical_size); ". Yes, we've really seen this crash. Therefore we upgraded to dovecot-1.2.3 with dovecot-1.2-sieve-0.1.11 in order to use sieve plugin (i.e. not cmu-sieve). We use Solaris 10 on Sun servers, we don't use NFS. However, unfortunately, dovecot with sieve crashes too. Here is dovecot log excerpt: 2009-09-01T02:40:57+02:00 prac/prac dovecot: [ID 583609 mail.crit] deliver(id@domain): Panic: file ext-body-common.c: line 149: assertion failed: (buf->used - 1 == part->body_size.physical_size) 2009-09-01T02:40:57+02:00 prac/prac dovecot: [ID 583609 mail.crit] deliver(id@domain): Panic: file ext-body-common.c: line 149: assertion failed: (buf->used - 1 == part->body_size.physical_size) 2009-09-01T02:40:57+02:00 prac/prac dovecot: [ID 583609 mail.error] deliver(id@domain): Raw backtrace: 0xbd27c -> 0xfead33b0 -> 0xfead358c -> 0xfead396c -> 0xfead4a78 -> 0xfeaa19dc -> 0xfeaa1abc -> 0xfeaa1c38 -> 0xfeabf22c -> 0xfeabf520 -> 0xfea90b20 -> 0xfea91048 -> 0xfea91404 -> 0x26e58 -> 0x23778 Now, some background. We use a sieve script with >>require "body"<<. This script compiles correctly and more, it works correctly while named as >>id(a)domain.sieve<< or >>id(a)domain.svbin". Nevertheless while the very same script is defined in plugin section of dovecot conf as "sieve = script" or "sieve_before = script" or "sieve_after = script" then dovecot crashes. I consider it as an important hint for problem resolution. Moreover, not every mail is affected, but we didn't investigate which mails are correctly saved to inbox and which crash. The effect is, we're not able to implement global sieve policies which is bad because we really need them :-). We'd than be happy to test fixes, if any. Best regards, MU

[Dovecot] local delivery agent
by legionaer85 07 Sep '09

07 Sep '09

Hey, i've got a problem with my lda and exim, probably i assume that it's dovecot. I think that, because i get an error in exim: T=dovecot_delivery: Child process of dovecot_delivery transport returned 67 (could mean user nonexistent) from command: /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver in exim i use /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver -d <name>@<domain>.<tld> -f <name>@<domain>.<tld> So, i tried to focus the error and thought there is not the right argument for delivery. But i couldn't get any hints about the arguments for the deliver agent. Exim gives me a complete string which is 'name(a)domain.ltd' Now my question. How parses the deliver agent this string? Splits it into variables? If yes... to which ones? name and domain? Thanks a lot for any answers. =>dovecot --version 1.0.rc15 ------ =>dovecot -n # /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf log_path: /var/log/dovecot/main.log info_log_path: /var/log/dovecot/info.log log_timestamp: %Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S ssl_cert_file: /etc/ssl/certs/ssl_cert.crt ssl_key_file: /etc/ssl/certs/ssl.key login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login login_executable: /usr/lib/dovecot/imap-login login_user: vmail login_greeting: <servername> Mailserver ready. verbose_proctitle: yes first_valid_uid: 8 last_valid_uid: 8 mail_privileged_group: mail mail_location: dbox:/var/spool/mail/%d/%n mail_debug: yes auth default: user: mail passdb: driver: sql args: /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf userdb: driver: prefetch socket: type: listen client: path: /var/run/dovecot/auth-client mode: 384 user: mail group: mail master: path: /var/run/dovecot/auth-master mode: 384 user: mail group: mail --------- =>grep -v '^ *$#.*$\?$' /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf driver = mysql connect = host=<host> dbname=<dbname> user=<user> password=<pass> default_pass_scheme = PLAIN password_query = SELECT password, '/var/mail/%d/%n' AS userdb_home, 'mail' AS userdb_uid, 'mail' AS userdb_gid FROM user WHERE username = '%n' AND domain = '%d' AND IMAP_allowed = 'YES' user_query = SELECT username, uid, gid FROM user WHERE username = '%n' AND domain = '%d' --------- in the db i have the user table columns: username, domain, password

[Dovecot] IMAP Directory Issues (brand new install)
by Jesse Vollmar 07 Sep '09

Hi, I just installed dovecot 1.1.11 and am having some issues. Mail appears to be delivered to the Maildirs just fine, but when a client (Thunderbird) tries to retrieve them I get this: dovecot: IMAP(info(a)aedisit.com): maildir_file_do(/var/mail/ > aedisit.com/info/cur/1251566335.V14I27a91M380600.kim) Filename keeps > changing After turning on mail debug mode, I get this: Aug 29 13:41:48 kim dovecot: IMAP(vollmarj(a)aedisit.com): maildir: > data=/var/mail/ > aedisit.com/vollmarj:INDEX=/var/dovecot/indexes/aedisit.com/vollmarj Aug 29 13:41:48 kim dovecot: IMAP(vollmarj(a)aedisit.com): maildir++: > root=/var/mail/aedisit.com/vollmarj, index=/var/dovecot/indexes/ > aedisit.com/vollmarj, control=, inbox=/var/mail/aedisit.com/vollmarj Here is my dovecot -n output: # 1.1.11: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf # OS: Linux 2.6.28-15-server x86_64 Ubuntu 9.04 log_timestamp: %Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S protocols: imap imaps pop3 pop3s login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login login_executable(default): /usr/lib/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(imap): /usr/lib/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(pop3): /usr/lib/dovecot/pop3-login mail_privileged_group: mail mail_executable(default): /usr/lib/dovecot/imap mail_executable(imap): /usr/lib/dovecot/imap mail_executable(pop3): /usr/lib/dovecot/pop3 mail_plugin_dir(default): /usr/lib/dovecot/modules/imap mail_plugin_dir(imap): /usr/lib/dovecot/modules/imap mail_plugin_dir(pop3): /usr/lib/dovecot/modules/pop3 auth default: passdb: driver: pam userdb: driver: passwd

[Dovecot] setting up both system password users AND virtual users
by Markus Bonet 07 Sep '09

07 Sep '09

Hi, I want to pick up this discussion. I am trying to achieve the same, but I am using Maildir instead. Here's the (relevent part of the) config file as configured by the recent suggestion: # We're using Maildir format mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir # Authentication configuration: auth_verbose = yes auth default { mechanisms = plain userdb passwd { } userdb static { args = uid=vmail gid=vmail home=/daten/mailusers/%u } passdb passwd-file { args = /etc/dovecot/passwd } } But when I try to login in to a system's user mailbox, it'll be rejected as unknown in my Dovecot's passwd file. I am converting from courier-imap, so I am kind of new to Dovecot. Markus

[Dovecot] IMAP activity after disconnect
by Charles Sprickman 07 Sep '09

07 Sep '09

Howdy, I'm running Dovecot 1.1.16 on a staging server to do some testing before building a new server and moving a bunch of qmail/vpopmail/courier accounts over. I wanted to test the migration of courier accounts to dovecot with a few clients, so I copied over a few large accounts. All went well with a small account (100+ messages) when accessing the account via POP - no re-downloads after adjusting the uidl format. IMAP looks good as well after running the conversion script and setting the namespace properly. However, one thing I copied over without paying much attention was a non-quota'd spam box that has literally not been checked in at least a year: [root@nac /var/vmail/xxx.com/spork/Maildir/.Spam]# ls new/| wc -l 70501 Mail.app valiantly tried to sync this, but when I realized just how huge this was, I took the account offline and quit the app. However it seems like Dovecot is still busy doing something in that mailbox: lsof: no pwd entry for UID 5000 imap 27515 5000 7uW VREG 0,95 3372 2968764 /jails/nac.xxx.com/var/vmail/xxx.com/spork/Maildir/.Spam/dovecot.index.log lsof: no pwd entry for UID 5000 imap 27515 5000 8u VREG 0,95 488 3007349 /jails/nac.xxx.com/var/vmail/xxx.com/spork/Maildir/.Spam/dovecot.index lsof: no pwd entry for UID 5000 imap 27515 5000 9u VREG 0,95 25195 27064933 /jails/nac.xxx.com/var/vmail/xxx.com/spork/Maildir/.Spam/dovecot-uidlist lsof: no pwd entry for UID 5000 imap 27515 5000 10r VDIR 0,95 15171072 2968758 /jails/nac.xxx.com/var/vmail/xxx.com/spork/Maildir/.Spam/new My guess is it's trying to build an index. This process is chewing up 100% of whatever cpu it lands on. Is this expected behavior (not the huge cpu usage, but the imap server continuing to work on the box after the client has logged out)? Are there any config settings I've missed to sort of put a cap on how much cpu/time dovecot will spend on a task like this? So far this has been running for about 20 minutes. I'm going to kill it and manually delete the spam since I'm not familiar enough with gdb to dig in and see just what it's doing (although my guess is indexing). On the upside, I have some serious spam magnet addresses in this test domain, so now I've got a great platform to test my amavis/postfix/policy skills. :) Thanks, Charles ___ Charles Sprickman NetEng/SysAdmin Bway.net - New York's Best Internet - www.bway.net spork(a)bway.net - 212.655.9344

[Dovecot] mbox to maildir migration question and problems, dovecot-1.0.7-7.el5
by Eric Sammons 07 Sep '09

07 Sep '09

Hi, I am trying to assist a customer with a mbox to maildir migration. I have them using the latest and greatest mb2md.pl; the one that support -K, -U|-u. They have seen overwhelming success with this; however, a recent mbox introduced a new scenario and the result was that all messages were replayed in the client UI. The mbox in question had _no_ X-UID tags. To work-a-round the issue the customer performed the following steps. [snip] We found that the fix was to clear /var/indexes/$USER for the account and log in and log back out. After doing this X-UID's were populated for each respective message. [/snip] The customer also noted that after the migration all messages went to ~/MailDir/new. I would appreciate any thoughts on why this scenario played out the way it did? Is it expected that these messages should reside in ~/MailDir/new? [config] protocol pop3 { pop3_uidl_format = %08Xv%08Xu pop3_reuse_xuidl = yes } [/config] Thank you! -- Eric L. Sammons, RHCE

[Dovecot] Problem with ldap error logging
by Stefano Fedrigo 07 Sep '09

07 Sep '09

I configured dovecot to authenticate through ldap. When for some reason the ldap server is not working dovecot writes this message to the system log: dovecot: auth(default): accept(type 1) failed: Too many open files "Too many open files" is caused by an openldap bug. The serious problem is that dovecot repeats that message a huge number of times, something like 20000 times per second, until the ldap daemon starts working or, more likely, no more disk space remains. -- // Stefano Fedrigo - Develer S.r.l. \X/ http://www.develer.com

[Dovecot] mail_uid and mail_gid are not set in environment (for expire-tool and so)
by Baptiste Malguy 07 Sep '09

07 Sep '09

Hello, I've just subscribed to the list, as a recent user of Dovecot (1.2.4 by now). I eventually missed a point, so I tried to find other doc or comments about my issue, but failed to. If the following has already been discussed, please simply reply with a URL to the corresponding thread or doc ;-) Now that I have covered my ass, here is the problem I meet. In dovecot.conf, I have the following: mail_uid = vmail mail_guid = vmail which is confirmed with 'dovecot -n' I have a script my-expire-tool-test containing: #!/bin/sh set which basically only display environment variables. When I run : /usr/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail ext my-expire-tool-test I do not see any variable MAIL_UID nor MAIL_GID. As a consquence, when I run /usr/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail ext my-expire-tool with my-expire-tool containing: #!/bin/sh # This script is a workaround for Dovecot 1.2 having issue to load modules when running expire-tool. # More information: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Expire, search Dovecot v1.2 MAIL_PLUGINS=${MAIL_PLUGINS//antispam/} MAIL_PLUGINS=${MAIL_PLUGINS//imap_acl/} MAIL_PLUGINS=${MAIL_PLUGINS//imap_quota/} MAIL_PLUGINS=${MAIL_PLUGINS//mail_log/} exec /usr/lib/dovecot/expire-tool "$@" It politely tells me: Error: userdb(user@domain) didn't return uid and mail_uid not set Actually, this is this message error that lead me to check the environment variables. Then I also checked the source code, and run: grep -r env_put . | grep -i mail_ No trace of mail_uid nor mail_gid. Did I find a bug or did I miss a point ? [Dovecot] odd dovecot / spampal interaction
by gyre 07 Sep '09

07 Sep '09

[Apologies if you've seen this message twice. I originally sent it from another e-mail account but it never seemed to appear on the list for me.] Apologies if this has been mentioned before. I've searched quite a few of the archives, but haven't found an answer. I've just installed dovecot 1.1.6 on my qnap server, and have found an odd interaction with spampal that I've not seen before using other imap servers. Let me attempt to explain. On the mail server machine, I use XMail to pull in new messages from my external pop3 mail account. These messages are then visable to dovecot's imap server. On my mail client machine, I have a spampal proxy between outlook express and the imap server. So, when I wish to read mail, outlook express connects to the spampal proxy and spampal then connects to the dovecot imap server. That all works fine until a message that spampal thinks is spam arrives. spampal instructs the dovecot imap server to move the message from Inbox to the Spam folder and then expunge Inbox. However, erroneously, a random message in my Inbox now seems to lose its seen flag. So if I have 5 new spam messages arrive, all 5 get moved from Inbox to Spam, but correspondingly 5 messages in the middle of my Inbox are now apparently not seen, so outlook express says there are 5 unseen messages, and lets me move down to them. It's almost as if the flags for the Spam folder are being applied to the Inbox folder instead. I've used wireshark to capture an example session of this happening when 2 spam messages arrive, in the hope that somebody wiser than I can work out what is going wrong, and where. Any help gratefully received. Thanks. -- gyre --

[Dovecot] offlineimap with dovecot: file-time is one hour in the future
by Dieter Faulbaum 04 Sep '09

04 Sep '09

I use offlineimap to sync my remote IMAP-server with my local IMAP-server (maildir format). But I don't understand this behavior: every new mail in the INBOX has a file-date which is one hour in the future. Is this 'normal'? Is this a problem of offlineimap? I tried this debugging (for dovecot): mail_executable = /usr/lib/dovecot/rawlog /usr/lib/dovecot/imap and this (for offlineimap): offlineimap -d imap, maildir, thread -l ~/offlineimap.log But I can't find any helpful information in these files, which shows me what went wrong. Has anyone a better technique or a hint how to find out what caused this (little) problem? -- Dieter Faulbaum

[Dovecot] v2.0 configuration parsing
by Timo Sirainen 04 Sep '09

04 Sep '09

I'm trying to figure out how exactly v2.0 should be parsing configuration files. The most annoying part is if it should always just "use whatever comes first in config" or try some kind of a "use most specific rule". The "most specific" kind of makes more sense initially, but then you start wondering how to handle e.g.: 1) User logs in to imap from 192.168.0.1. What is foo's value? protocol imap { remote_ip 192.168.0.0/16 { foo = foo } } remote_ip 192.168.0.0/24 { foo = bar } 2) User logs in from 192.168.0.1 to 10.1.2.3. What is foo's value? local_ip 192.168.0.1 { remote_ip 10.1.2.0/24 { foo = foo } } remote_ip 10.1.2.3 { local_ip 192.168.0.0/24 { foo = bar } } Any thoughts?

Using mbox storage and only tested with that, but it seems to work as expected for the time being. I'm attaching a relatively small patch for quota-dirsize.c against dovecot-1.1.18 just in case anyone's interested. Best Regards, Thanos Chatziathanassiou

[Dovecot] IMAP timeout problem
by Vasantha Narayan 04 Sep '09

04 Sep '09

Hello, We are running dovecot 1.1.2 on a Solaris 10 box. We have been running the same configuration for about a year without a problem. We have a different cert for POP and IMAP. Recently we made two changes. The cert for IMAP expired and we had to install a new one. We applied some patches to the SAN disks that hosts the mail partition. These changes were made over a weekend and the system was rebooted. There were no errors in the logs and everything worked fine until the following Monday morning when IMAP connections increased. When IMAP ports started getting hammered in the morning, IMAP clients started getting "IMAP time out" errors. When this error occurs, IMAP freezes and IMAP clients such as, Thunderbird and Squirrelmail are not able to connect to the IMAP server (both IMAP and IMAPS). We cannot get a telnet connection to the IMAP port or a openssl connection to the IMAPS port. Kill -HUP of the dovecot server solves the problem. But again, when the usage increases, the problem surfaces again. There is no problem with POP or POPS. It continues to function normally while IMAP times out and freezes two or three times a day. Any clue where the problem might be? The debug log does not have any useful pointers. Thanks. Vasantha

[Dovecot] External auth database process
by Aaron Roberts 04 Sep '09

04 Sep '09

Hi, Is it possible to call a completely external process to authenticate users in dovecot? I am trying to setup a transparent pop3 proxy that will lookup users from a couple of different pop3 servers, authenticate to 1 of them, take a copy of the password and a timestamp and client IP upon success, then proxy to the appropriate end server. I was hoping I would be able to do something along the lines of: dovecot.conf: passdb external args = /usr/scripts/dovecot_auth.pl %u %w The perl script would then carry out the various tasks and return the host and destuser for proxying. Thanks in advance, Aaron

[Dovecot] lmtp server
by fernando＠dfcom.com.br 03 Sep '09

03 Sep '09

I believe that dovecot lmtp server will be released with 2.0 version. I working at a project that requires an lmtp server to have scalability. How about the stability of the actual version (alpha, beta ?). Is it mature to be used at production environment ? Another question, my 'ideal' setup would be to receive a message by lmtp and delivers it to an external command (like maildrop). Would it be possible. ? Best Regards, Fernando

But to this deliver the mx servers mount nfs partitions - we need to use maildrop because many patches we inserted. How can I insert a piece of code at maildrop allowing it to update the dovecot indexes (which lib and/or function from dovecot I need to use ?) Best Regards, Fernando

[Dovecot] Question about sieve script execution
by Mel Flynn 03 Sep '09

03 Sep '09

Hi, after reading the wiki about sieve_before/sieve_after and sieve_global_path, it's still unclear to me if: sieve_before scripts are executed if no user script exists, but a global script is defined. The reason I ask, is because I'd like to use the same script, so that I don't have to maintain two scripts to apply "company policy" or "global features". It seems implicit from this sentence, but I've been taught not to assume implicitness by various pieces of software ;) "This is not possible using the sieve_global_path setting, because that is only used when the user's private script does not exist." -- Mel

I use dovecot 1.2.4 release with sieve 0.1.12 If I setup sieve-before script and latest script contains "keep" at the very end and no personal scripts found then segfault take place. here is part of exim log: 2009-09-01 18:43:06 1MiUZA-0005V9-IB ** ivanov_maxim(a)domain.my <admin(a)domain.my> R=localuser T=local_delivery: Child process of local_delivery transport (running command "/usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver -d $local_part") was terminated by signal 11 (Segmentation fault) Once I remove "keep" from end of latest sieve-before script, everything goes fine. [Dovecot] POP3 and AVG
by Rick Romero 02 Sep '09

02 Sep '09

Is anyone running v 1.2.3 and have clients with AVG email scanning? I upgraded a server a few weeks ago (which ran Dovecot and the Maildir mail store), and all of a sudden clients with AVG were unable to use POP. Essentially, AVG freezes. The server upgrade was from FreeBSD 7 to OpenSolaris 2009.06, and I did upgrade the Dovecot version from 1.1.17 to 1.2.3, but kept the same config. When I point those users to a port running qmail-popup on another machine (NFS mounting the new server), they work fine. I'm sure I reverted to 1.1.17 during the initial hectic days, with no change. Of course, I'm also sure I had a few of the users test the alternate qmail-popup server, maybe they did it wrong. :( Any thoughts? [Dovecot] Smartsieve patch on Dovecot wiki?
by Ronald Johnson 02 Sep '09

02 Sep '09

I am attempting to get smartsieve 1.0 RC2 working with our test install of dovecot, but can not locate the Managesieve.php fix listed on the ManageSieve page: http://wiki.dovecot.org/ManageSieve/Clients Does anyone know of another location to get this fix? I've googled around, but not found an alternate location. We're running: dovecot-1.2.3 dovecot-1.2-sieve-0.1.12 dovecot-1.2-managesieve-0.11.9 The managesieve server is working fine for other ManageSieve clients such as Roundcube's managesieve and sieverules plugins, it is only smartsieve I am having problems with. Any pointers are appreciated. Cheers, Ron --

Re: [Dovecot] Question about ACL/flags
by Eric Jon Rostetter 01 Sep '09

01 Sep '09

Quoting Timo Sirainen <tss(a)iki.fi>: > You can't have per-user seen flags with mbox currently. So create a > public namespace with a maildir location and set up dovecot-acl file in > a way that allows only some specific users access to it. So for example: To refresh, I want a shared account, but my system was Dovecot 1.1 with all mbox mailboxes. Well, this is what I've done so far: 1) Upgraded to dovecot 1.2 (just because I could, I guess) 2) Tried to setup private/public namespaces... Edited "dovecot -n" output: # 1.2.4: /etc/dovecot.conf # OS: Linux 2.6.18-128.4.1.el5.centos.plus x86_64 CentOS release 5.3 (Final) [...] mail_location: mbox:~/mail/:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u:INDEX=/var/dovecot/indexes/ %u [...] mail_plugins(default): zlib acl mail_plugins(imap): zlib acl mail_plugins(pop3): zlib [...] namespace: type: private separator: / inbox: yes list: yes subscriptions: yes namespace: type: public separator: / prefix: shared/ location: maildir:/var/spool/mail/public:INDEX=/var/dovecot/indexes/public/%u list: no lda: postmaster_address: postmaster(a)physics.utexas.edu hostname: mail.ph.utexas.edu log_path: info_log_path: syslog_facility: mail auth default: passdb: driver: ldap args: /etc/dovecot-ldap.conf userdb: driver: ldap args: /etc/dovecot-ldap.conf plugin: acl: vfile 3) Created /var/spool/mail/public/.myfolder for the account to deliver to. Created empty dovecot-shared file for it. 4) Created a .forward file in the account to run "deliver" which does in fact deliver the account's email to the right maildir location. 5) Created /var/spool/mail/public/.myfolder/dovecot-acl which has something like: owner lrwstiekxa user=me lrwstiekxa user=you lrst So, mail is delivered to this account correctly as a maildir mailbox. But, I don't know how to read it, and/or configured something incorrectly. It appears to be there, more or less: a0 namespace * NAMESPACE (("" "/")) NIL (("shared/" "/")) a0 OK Namespace completed. a0 list "" "shared/" * LIST (\Noselect \HasNoChildren) "/" "shared/" a0 OK List completed. But I can't figure out how to access it (either manuall via telnet as above, or from a client, etc). So, how do I access it, and/or what did I do wrong? While I've been doing email servers since the 1980's, this is my first try at using IMAP namespaces and shared folders, and I'm just not getting it... :( -- Eric Rostetter The Department of Physics The University of Texas at Austin This message is provided "AS IS" without warranty of any kind, either expressed or implied. [Dovecot] Hang on login since 1.2.4

[Dovecot] Global ACL configuration problems: mailboxes not visible, set ACLs not honoured
by Andreas Ntaflos 01 Sep '09

01 Sep '09

Hi list, I am having trouble getting global ACLs to work correctly. This is, I assume, an issue separate from the one I reported a few days ago [1], where the imap process crashes when creating subfolders of folders with an ACL set. As you can see from my 'dovecot -n' output below I have three namespaces; two private ("Backup" and the default, empty one) and one public ("Public"). I also use the autocreate plugin to create a few standard folders. Those folders, along with some others, should have some special permissions and restrictions in place. I.e. messages must not be deletable, the mailbox itself may not be deleted, etc. I want to use global ACLs so that I don't have to put a dovecot-acl file in every folder that I want to have an ACL set. Thus, according to the wiki, if have set acl:vfile:/etc/dovecot/acls I can create files named "Sent", "Trash", "Drafts", "INBOX.Spam" and "Backup.sent", "Backup.received", "Public.Spam", "Public.Ham" in the directory /etc/dovecot/acls. These files contain the ACL, such as "owner lrp", "owner lrwsipk" and "authenticated lrwstipk". Any and all "dovecot-acl-list" files have been deleted before testing and reproducing that problem again just now. Is there anything more to it? I ask, because I can't seem to get it to work correctly using this approach with global ACLs. Problems include: - Can't get the mailboxes "Spam" and "Ham" under the "Public" namespace to show up in the mail client (Thunderbird, KMail, Horde/IMP) at all. These have the ACL "authenticated lrwstipk" set so the should be visible to authenticated clients, shouldn't they? All I see is the namespace with no mailboxes beneath it. - Deleting messages from the "Backup.sent" or "Backup.received" mailboxes is possible from Thunderbird, KMail and Horde/IMP, despite having the ACL "owner rlp" set, which, if I understand correctly, should only allow users to lookup, read and post to the mailing list via LDA/Sieve. What am I doing wrong? It seems to me that the global ACL files for namespaces other than the empty one are not at all considered? Do I have to use another notation for the ACL file names? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance! Configuration information follows. Contents of /etc/dovecot/acl ============================ Backup.received owner rlp Backup.sent owner rlp Drafts owner lrwstipk INBOX.Spam owner lrwstipk Public.Ham authenticated lrwstipk Public.Spam authenticated lrwstipk Sent owner lrwstipk Trash owner lrwstipk 'dovecot -n' ============ # 1.2.4: /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf # OS: Linux 2.6.26-2-686 i686 Debian 5.0.2 log_timestamp: %Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S protocols: managesieve imap imaps pop3 pop3s login_dir: /usr/local/var/run/dovecot/login login_executable(default): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(imap): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(pop3): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/pop3-login login_executable(managesieve): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/managesieve-login mail_access_groups: mail mail_privileged_group: mail mail_location: maildir:~/Maildir mail_drop_priv_before_exec: yes mail_executable(default): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap mail_executable(imap): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap mail_executable(pop3): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/pop3 mail_executable(managesieve): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/managesieve mail_plugins(default): autocreate acl mail_plugins(imap): autocreate acl mail_plugins(pop3): mail_plugins(managesieve): mail_plugin_dir(default): /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap mail_plugin_dir(imap): /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap mail_plugin_dir(pop3): /usr/local/lib/dovecot/pop3 mail_plugin_dir(managesieve): /usr/local/lib/dovecot/managesieve namespace: type: public separator: . prefix: Public. location: maildir:/var/mail/public:CONTROL=~/Maildir/control/public:INDEX=~/Maildir/index/public list: yes namespace: type: private separator: . prefix: Backup. location: maildir:~/Maildir-backup hidden: yes list: no namespace: type: private separator: . inbox: yes list: yes subscriptions: yes lda: log_path: info_log_path: auth_socket_path: /var/run/dovecot/auth-master postmaster_address: postmaster(a)mailtest0.rise-s.com mail_plugins: sieve acl auth default: mechanisms: plain login passdb: driver: pam passdb: driver: sql args: /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf userdb: driver: passwd userdb: driver: static args: uid=vmail gid=vmail home=/var/vmail/%Ld/%Ln allow_all_users=yes socket: type: listen client: path: /var/spool/postfix/private/auth mode: 432 user: postfix group: postfix master: path: /var/run/dovecot/auth-master mode: 384 user: vmail plugin: sieve: ~/.dovecot.sieve sieve_dir: ~/sieve sieve_global_path: /etc/dovecot/sieve/default.sieve sieve_global_dir: /etc/dovecot/sieve/global/ sieve_before: /etc/dovecot/sieve/before/ autocreate: Trash autocreate2: Drafts autocreate3: Sent autocreate4: INBOX.Spam autosubscribe: Trash autosubscribe2: Drafts autosubscribe3: Sent autosubscribe4: INBOX.Spam acl: vfile:/etc/dovecot/acl [1] http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2009-August/042467.html -- Andreas Ntaflos Vienna, Austria GPG Fingerprint: 6234 2E8E 5C81 C6CB E5EC 7E65 397C E2A8 090C A9B4

This is a tired old topic but I've at least got an angle on it: Outlook Express works perfectly with IMAP / SPA for users logged into our Windows domain; I just give the server address and username, and it logs in without any password required; beautiful! auth_ntlm_use_winbind = yes auth_winbind_helper_path = /usr/bin/ntlm_auth auth default { mechanisms = ntlm userdb static { args = uid=500 gid=500 home=/var/mail/%u allow_all_users=yes } } Dovecot is the 1.1.13-2~bpo50+1 package from backports.org on Debian lenny, with winbind 3.2.5 Aug 28 23:49:38 ccimap dovecot: auth(default): client in: AUTH#0111#011NTLM#011service=imap#011lip=10.6.1.82#011rip=10.6.1.81#011lport=143#011rport=1205 Aug 28 23:49:38 ccimap dovecot: auth(default): client out: CONT#0111#011 Aug 28 23:49:38 ccimap dovecot: auth(default): client in: CONT#0111#011TlRMTVNTUAABAAAAB7IIogIAAgAvAAAABwAHACgAAAAFASgKAAAAD01SSklHR1NBRA== Aug 28 23:49:38 ccimap dovecot: auth(default): client out: CONT#0111#011TlRMTVNTUAACAAAABAAEADAAAAAFgominEGMs1Rz3YQAAAAAAAAAAGYAZgA0AAAAQQBEAAIABABBAEQAAQAMAEMAQwBJAE0AQQBQAAQAGgBsAGEAdABlAHIAbwBvAG0AcwAuAGMAbwBtAAMAKABjAGMAaQBtAGEAcAAuAGwAYQB0AGUAcgBvAG8AbQBzAC4AYwBvAG0AAAAAAA== Aug 28 23:49:38 ccimap dovecot: auth(default): client in: CONT#0111#011TlRMTVNTUAADAAAAGAAYAGYAAAAYABgAfgAAAAQABABIAAAADAAMAEwAAAAOAA4AWAAAAAAAAACWAAAABYKIogUBKAoAAAAPQQBEAG0AagBpAGcAZwBzAE0AUgBKAEkARwBHAFMAKYRSdfpULaQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAj90Vff2FIU1+Gs/eei8bL8dMJFGZnzSg Aug 28 23:49:38 ccimap dovecot: auth(default): client out: OK#0111#011user=mjiggs Aug 28 23:49:38 ccimap dovecot: auth(default): master in: REQUEST#0112#0111869#0111 Aug 28 23:49:38 ccimap dovecot: auth(default): passwd(mjiggs,10.6.1.81): lookup Aug 28 23:49:38 ccimap dovecot: auth(default): master out: USER#0112#011mjiggs#011system_user=mjiggs#011uid=10416#011gid=10000#011home=/home/AD/mjiggs Aug 28 23:49:38 ccimap dovecot: imap-login: Login: user=<mjiggs>, method=NTLM, rip=10.6.1.81, lip=10.6.1.82 So, Outlook Express works. [Dovecot] v2.0 configuration paths
by Timo Sirainen 01 Sep '09

01 Sep '09

In Dovecot v2.0 I'm splitting dovecot-example.conf to multiple files. It's probably annoying to have tons of dovecot-*-example.conf files, so what do you think about: 1. Change default sysconfdir from $prefix/etc to $prefix/etc/dovecot (that's what most distros do anyway) 2. Install *.conf files to $sysconfdir/example/ without the "-example" part in any of the config files. So new installations would then start with "mv example/* ."

[Dovecot] Active IMAP sessions per server?
by Brent Bloxam 31 Aug '09

31 Aug '09

Hi, I'm curious about some of the larger dovecot installs out there and what your current active user load looks like per server. Realistically, how many active IMAP sessions are some of you maintaining? At what point did you find the load became unmanageable? I know there's a lot of different factors involved in this, but I'm just looking to get a rough idea of what I can expect to be able to handle with dovecot. Any help is appreciated Regards, Brent

[Dovecot] Quotas ignored on INBOX only
by Random Monkey 31 Aug '09

31 Aug '09

I have set up postifx and dovecot (1.1) with virtual users and delivery via LDA. I am very pleased with the results so far but have this problem with quotas. Setting a global quota using plugin { } I initially used maildir to set quotas, but they seem to apply to all folders apart from INBOX. For debugging I switched maildir to dict using mysql. The table populates as it should with sizes and message count for all messages created in trash/drafts/sent folders - but messages in the INBOX do not increment size or message count in the table. I have tried with quota rules for both messages and storage. I have also tried specifying INBOX instead of * Any suggestions on how to fix please? [Dovecot] expire plugin: columns not uniq

[Dovecot] Quick and dirty server optimized for IMAP upload speed?
by Adam McDougall 31 Aug '09

31 Aug '09

Early next week I need to upload over 100,000 emails to an IMAP server as quickly as possible from an Outlook client. I am looking for any methods I can use to (temporarily?) speed up the rate at which dovecot can accept and store IMAP uploads, whether it be storing on local disk, ram disk, etc. I can setup a temporary server on a laptop for example and once the upload has finished I can use standard file copying methods to transfer the mail to stable, permanent storage. I haven't been able to see over about 7 msgs/sec upload speed from a local folder in any mail client to dovecot (only NFS or ZFS backend tested so far with Maildir). Is there something horribly wrong with the speed I am seeing or are there just tricks I can try? Any tips? I'll be working on it all weekend until I find something satisfactory. It seems like I can upload mails to an Exchange server quicker. I'll setup just about anything that my experience allows me to, I can be very resourceful with adhoc hardware and software. Alternatively I'll take a fast way of converting Exchange email to a tree of local mbox files which I can then run mb2md on. I tried using Thunderbird to Import the mails from Outlook and while it was fast, it messed up the formatting of some of the mails so I don't think I can use that. I tried readpst briefly from libpst but it took a long time to run, took alot of cpu, and was spewing lots of errors so I canceled it. Thanks for any input!

[Dovecot] Postfix : lda problem
by denis 30 Aug '09

30 Aug '09

Hi, I come back with my problem: On debian lenny, using dovecot 1.1.13-2~bpo50+1 I try to configure my setup (with Postfix virtual domains) to use dovecot as lda but nothing happens, as if postfix not delegate to dovecot I am using the contreol panel alternc (http://www.alternc.org) All the maildir are in the format /var/alternc/mail/i/info_domainepublic.net for info(a)domainepublic.net The "virtual_mailbox_maps" will retrieve the correct maildir to deliver the message. For Alternc, an address is considered as an alias of the primary domain name. Thus info(a)domainepublic.net is assimilated to info_domainepublic.net(a)altern.domainepublic.net Here is a sequence of arrival of mail, the result of postconf -n, dovecot -n and the master.cf from postfix I looked in the documentation and google, but I do not understand the problem. [Dovecot] Dovecot 1.0.14 + osx 10.6 and authentication PAM
by Maarten Koster 30 Aug '09

30 Aug '09

Howdy, Today I installed the new version of Apple OSX 10.6. Besides that it deleted the dovecot user, things went quite smooth. As far as I can tell it is running as it used to. However, I can't login to my account. It used to work fine with PAM taking the username and password from my osx installation. Now it doesn't allow me to login anymore. I have read on a website that apple changed from Linux-Pam to Open-Pam. If this is true, how would I need to change the PAM entry file? [Dovecot] Quota question.
by Tom Diehl 29 Aug '09

29 Aug '09

Hi, I am trying to get quota working properly on dovecot 1.2.3 with postfix admin, amavisd-new, mysql, and postfix. So far I can see the db getting updated when messages are added and deleted from the mailbox. The problem I am having is that I have imported a bunch of messages from the old mail server that was running uw-imap and mbox to the doevcot machine using maildir++. As a result the quotas used only reflects what has been added and deleted since the import was done. What is the proper way to get the quota in the database to reflect what is actually in the users mailbox? Google and the wiki have not been helpful to me in figuring this out. I do not really think this is a config problem but in case it is below is the output of dovecot-n: (vfoggy pts7) # dovecot -n # 1.2.3: /etc/dovecot.conf # OS: Linux 2.6.18-128.4.1.el5xen x86_64 CentOS release 5.3 (Final) protocols: imap imaps pop3 pop3sa managesieve listen: * login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login login_executable(default): /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(imap): /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(pop3): /usr/libexec/dovecot/pop3-login login_executable(managesieve): /usr/libexec/dovecot/managesieve-login first_valid_uid: 512 last_valid_uid: 512 first_valid_gid: 512 last_valid_gid: 512 mail_location: maildir:~/ mail_executable(default): /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap mail_executable(imap): /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap mail_executable(pop3): /usr/libexec/dovecot/pop3 mail_executable(managesieve): /usr/libexec/dovecot/managesieve mail_plugins(default): quota mail_plugins(imap): quota mail_plugins(pop3): quota mail_plugins(managesieve): mail_plugin_dir(default): /usr/lib64/dovecot/imap mail_plugin_dir(imap): /usr/lib64/dovecot/imap mail_plugin_dir(pop3): /usr/lib64/dovecot/pop3 mail_plugin_dir(managesieve): /usr/lib64/dovecot/managesieve imap_client_workarounds(default): outlook-idle delay-newmail imap_client_workarounds(imap): outlook-idle delay-newmail imap_client_workarounds(pop3): imap_client_workarounds(managesieve): pop3_client_workarounds(default): pop3_client_workarounds(imap): pop3_client_workarounds(pop3): outlook-no-nuls oe-ns-eoh pop3_client_workarounds(managesieve): lda: postmaster_address: postmaster(a)tntechs.com mail_plugins: sieve quota auth default: mechanisms: plain login user: nobody worker_max_count: 50 passdb: driver: sql args: /etc/dovecot/sql.conf userdb: driver: static args: uid=512 gid=512 home=/var/spool/vmail/domains/%d/%n userdb: driver: sql args: /etc/dovecot/sql.conf socket: type: listen client: path: /var/spool/postfix/private/auth mode: 432 user: postfix group: vmail master: path: /var/run/dovecot/auth-master mode: 432 user: vmail group: vmail plugin: quota: dict:user::proxy::quotadict sieve: ~/.dovecot.sieve sieve_storage: ~/sieve acl: vfile:/etc/dovecot/acls trash: /etc/dovecot/trash.conf dict: quotadict: mysql:/etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-quota.conf (vfoggy pts7) # In addition below is what I have in dovecot-dict-quota.conf: map { pattern = priv/quota/storage table = quota username_field = username value_field = bytes } map { pattern = priv/quota/messages table = quota username_field = username value_field = messages } -- Regards, Tom Diehl tdiehl(a)rogueind.com Spamtrap address mtd123(a)rogueind.com

[Dovecot] GSSAPI Authentication Broke with Dovecot 1.1.16 -> 1.2.4 Upgrade
by John Marshall 29 Aug '09

29 Aug '09

This morning I upgraded a dovecot installation from 1.1.16 to 1.2.4 on a FreeBSD 7.2 server, and then spent 3 hours trying to figure out why GSSAPI authentication had broken. It turned out to be a recent change in Dovecot's mech-gssapi.c to do with checking for NULs in usernames: everything worked fine when I disabled that test. <http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.2/rev/5d53b1d66d1b> This is what I was seeing in the log file with auth_debug enabled: ------------------------ auth(default): client in: AUTH 1 GSSAPI service=imap secured lip=192.0.2.36 rip=192.0.2.168 lport=143 rport=51168 auth(default): gssapi(?,192.0.2.168): Obtaining credentials for imap(a)mail1.example.com auth(default): client out: CONT 1 auth(default): client in: CONT<hidden> auth(default): gssapi(john(a)EXAMPLE.COM,192.0.2.168): security context state completed. auth(default): client out: CONT 1 YGwGCSqGSIb3EgECAgIAb10wW6ADAgEFoQMCAQ+iTzBNoAMCARCiRgREIuGJR3fqiMdvWjEg6utI7bt3fZuI8Ulk4LoFu59aMgnX+Kivdohxin2A71UCEC7oG0sVYe7vrTjg2N9s27D1BLRuJbQ= auth(default): client in: CONT<hidden> auth(default): gssapi(john(a)EXAMPLE.COM,192.0.2.168): Negotiated security layer auth(default): client out: CONT 1 YD8GCSqGSIb3EgECAgIBBAD/////MINNkeu5LVS8fiZNSnb8j8iKBuHArr/sHec++VYV+9SSc+RkAf///wQEBAQ= auth(default): client in: CONT<hidden> auth(default): gssapi(john(a)EXAMPLE.COM,192.0.2.168): authz_name has NULs auth(default): client out: FAIL 1 user=john(a)EXAMPLE.COM imap-login: Disconnected (auth failed, 1 attempts): user=<john(a)EXAMPLE.COM>, method=GSSAPI, rip=192.0.2.168, lip=192.0.2.36, TLS: Disconnected ------------------------ I commented out the 'return -1;' at the end of the if(data_has_nuls) block (to preserve the log message but fall through), rebuilt, and everything works again. ------------------------ auth(default): gssapi(john(a)EXAMPLE.COM,192.0.2.168): authz_name has NULs auth(default): client out: OK 1 user=john(a)EXAMPLE.COM ------------------------ I tried building dovecot 1.2.4 with Heimdal 0.6.3, 1.0.1 and 1.2.1 and all gave the same result. [Dovecot] ACL in public folders
by Keith Edmunds 28 Aug '09

# dovecot --version 1.2.1 I'm trying to configure ACLs for public folders. I have: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- namespace public { separator = / prefix = shared2/ location = maildir:/home/pubfolders2:INDEX=~/Maildir/public2 subscriptions = no list = children } protocol imap { mail_plugins = acl } plugin { acl = vfile } -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have /home/pubfolders2/dovecot-acl containing: user=xyz lrwstiekxa I've also hardlinked the file to /home/pubfolders2/.info (one of the public folders: that dir contains cur, tmp, new). Since enabling ACLs in dovecot.conf, none of the users see the 'shared2' namespace. I've clearly misunderstood something. I'm expecting user xyz to be able to see the public folder. Grateful for any pointers. Thanks, Keith

[Dovecot] Question about ACL/flags
by Eric Jon Rostetter 28 Aug '09

28 Aug '09

Okay, I'm cruising the wiki, and it is at best confusing to me. Maybe someone on the list can help me out quickly? Here is what I have: dovecot 1.1.18, mbox format, currently no acl/namespace/etc. All works great. What I want to be able to do: Have an email account (or folder or mailbox) which can be accessed by several people (say 3) with per-user seen flags. That is, say 3 people all access the mail but each user has their own seen flag for the messages. This would hopefully be done with mbox still, if possible, but I'm willing to try a mixed mbox/maildir setup if required to accomplish the goal. Questions: 1) Can I do this with 1.1.18, or do I need to upgrade? 2) Do I need to set :CONTROL in mail_location, and if so, what should I set it to, and what does this control exactly (more precisely, does this info need to be HA or not, etc) Is this where the seen flag info will be stored (or is that in INDEXES)? 3) Can I do this with mbox only, or do I need maildir, or does it depend on dovecot version? 4) Any additional help you can give me... I basically understand the ideas behind it all, but from the wiki I'm confused exactly what I need to do, and what version I might need. (If the wiki example is for dovecot 1.2+, does that mean it won't work in 1.1, or just that it has to be done differently, etc). Any help (clearing up my obvious confusion) would be appreciated... Step by step directions would be even better! :) -- Eric Rostetter The Department of Physics The University of Texas at Austin This message is provided "AS IS" without warranty of any kind, either expressed or implied. [Dovecot] runaway imap processes
by rpyne＠kinfolk.org 27 Aug '09

I am running dovecot (1.2.3) with postfix (2.6.3), postfixadmin (2.1.0), maia mailguard (1.0.2) and squirrelmail (1.4.19) on Linux (kernel 2.6.27.8). I have an ongoing problem with imap processes that hang and eat all available cpu. I try killing them and they won't die. The only way to get rid of them is to reboot the server. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated. I really need to get this solved as it has been an ongoing problem for more than a year.

[Dovecot] TLS / SSL mixed w/ plaintext auth and virtual hosting
by Nathan M 27 Aug '09

27 Aug '09

Traditionally this server has only accepted plaintext authentications; however, we want to change that and enable TLS/SSL. The challenge is the server has hundreds of IP addresses it binds to to listen on ports 110/143. Enabling TLS/SSL is not an option because as this is a virtual hosting environment, if a connection comes in on any other hostname other than the specific one tied to the crt all mail clients will throw a mis-matched certificate error if TLS is initiated by the client, and a surprisingly large number of customers have "use TLS if available" selected in their clients. According to most of the suggestions on the list, I've setup 2 dovecot instances. The first listening on *:110 and *:143, and the second listening on 10.0.0.2:993 and 10.0.0.2:995. This works great for SSL support; however, I would also like to offer TLS to connections coming in on a single IP address. Because the server has hundreds of IPs, with new IPs adding all the time, seemingly the only way would be to configure every one of these IPs (as they occur) into the primary dovecot.conf file, and then only setup the single IP that's handling SSL/TLS in the dovecot-ssl.conf (the conf file the SSL/TLS instance loads). This can be time consuming and has no way to automate. It would be terrific if one of the following exists, or potentially could exist: 1. Ideal scenario. A config option which tells TLS to only respond on certain IPs. In our case if a connection attempts to initiate TLS on any IP address except 10.0.0.2, it would respond with no TLS support. This would be ideal as we could continue running just a single dovecot instance. 2. Secondary scenario. A way to exclude an IP from being bound to. Something like the following to bind to all except 10.0.0.2 listen = *:110, -10.0.0.2 As is, based on my understanding of the config neither of these are options. Any support for adding either of these options, or alternate ideas anyone might have? - N

[Dovecot] Fatal: Dovecot is already running
by Jim 27 Aug '09

We had a power outage here last night, and when the server rebooted, dovecot was unable to launch properly: 8/27/09 2:08:25 AM com.apple.SystemStarter[31] Starting dovecot 8/27/09 2:08:25 AM com.apple.SystemStarter[31] Fatal: Dovecot is already running with PID 143 (read from /usr/local/var/run/dovecot/ master.pid) 8/27/09 2:08:25 AM SystemStarter[31] dovecot (115) did not complete successfully When I checked the server and saw this, I simply started it via the command line, and it came right up, but of course that was hours later. Since this script is only called at startup, would it be safe to just delete master.pid before trying to start dovecot? The server here is OS X 10.5.7, dovecot is being called via a StartupItem. I had originally used a LaunchDaemon for starting this, but ran into issues because MySQL wasn't always ready when dovecot tried to launch, and dovecot would never come up as a result. Below is the script I'm using, which includes a check for MySQL: #!/bin/sh # A script to automatically start up policyd on system bootup . /etc/rc.common ConsoleMessage "dovecot - setting up" # wait for mysql start up IS_ALIVE=`/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqladmin -umysql ping | grep -c 'alive'` while [ "$IS_ALIVE" != "1" ]; do sleep 5 ConsoleMessage "dovecot - waiting for MySQL" IS_ALIVE=`/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqladmin -umysql ping | grep -c 'alive'` done StartService () { ConsoleMessage "Starting dovecot" /usr/local/sbin/dovecot } StopService () { return 0 } RestartService () { return 0 } RunService "$1"

[Dovecot] missing .dovecot.lda-dupes file in LDAP/virtual user environment
by Claudio Tassini 27 Aug '09

27 Aug '09

Hi, I'm running a postfix/dovecot/ldap setup and it works quite fine. I am now trying to setup a global sieve script to forward all incoming mails to a local user for vacation management (gnarwl). I can't user the vacation extension of the sieve script itself because it is not configurable enough (each user has his vacation message and status stored in LDAP). The problem is that when deliver runs the sieve script, it tries to create the .dovecot.lda-dupes inside the user homedir, even if I didn't use the vacation feature in the script. This is the error I get: Aug 27 15:19:23 myhostname deliver(user1(a)mydomain.it): file_dotlock_create( mydomain.it/1/user1(a)mydomain.it/Maildir/.dovecot.lda-dupes) failed: No such file or directory Important sections from config: master.cf deliver: dovecot unix - n n - - pipe flags=DRhu user=mail:mail argv=/usr/lib/dovecot/deliver -f ${sender} -d ${recipient} dovecot -n extract: mail_location: maildir:/maildirs/%h auth default: passdb: driver: ldap args: /etc/dovecot/dovecot-ldap.conf userdb: driver: passwd userdb: driver: ldap args: /etc/dovecot/dovecot-ldap.conf plugin: quota: maildir:User Quota acl: vfile:/etc/dovecot/acls sieve_global_path: /etc/dovecot/default.sieve and extract from dovecot-ldap.conf : user_attrs = mailMessageStore=home,maildirquota=quota_rule=*:backend=%$ user_filter = (&(|(mail=%u(a)mydomain.it )(mail=%u)(mailalternateaddress=%u)(mailequivalentaddress=%u))(objectclass=mailrecipient)(imap-status=true)) pass_attrs = mail=user,userPassword=password,mailMessageStore=userdb_home,mailquota=userdb_quota_rule=*:backend=%$ pass_filter = (&(|(mail=%u(a)mydomain.it )(mail=%u)(mailalternateaddress=%u)(mailequivalentaddress=%u))(objectclass=mailrecipient)(imap-status=true)) The global sieve script: require ["copy"]; if not address :is "to" "gnarwl@localhost" { redirect :copy "gnarwl@localhost"; } The format of the "home" userdb extra field as returned from the ldap is " mydomain.it/1/user1(a)mydomain.it/Maildir/" . This value is normally appended to the mail_location global parameter ( /maildirs ) to build a path of the form "/maildirs/mydomain.it/1/user1(a)mydomain.it/Maildir" . This works flawlessly when delivering mail, but seems that the sieve plugin ignores the "mail_location" and tries to write the dupes file in the home as it is returned from the ldap. Questions are: 1) Is it normal that lda tries to create the dupes file even if I am not using the vacation extension at all? 2) How can I tell LDA/sieve/whatever to prepend the mail_location to the home directory of the user for proper creation of the file? Many thanks in advance. -- Claudio Tassini

[Dovecot] Weird mirgration problem
by Stewart Dean 27 Aug '09

27 Aug '09

Most likely non-Dovecot, but I'd appreciate any comments on WTF might be going on here. Preparatory to migration from mbox to maildir format on our AIX mail server, I am migrating from the JFS filesystem (being deprecated by IBM) to JFS2 to better handling the jump in the number of files. Two nights ago, I took the first step and migrated the IT homedir filesystem: copied it to a scratch disk, melted down the FS and recreated it as a JFS2 FS. In order to keep changes from happening to it during this process, I killed off DC (dovecot -n ouput is appended to bottom of this note) and dropped the export of the FS. The bringup was a little ragged due to time constraints and the fact that I had trouble re-establishing the export. FWIW, the homedirs and Inobx FSes are mounted by a majordomo mailing list server. Everything went fine except for an anomaly with old pre-existing mailing list emails in my INBOX and that of a few others. Note that the inbox FS wasn't touched by this process, just the homedir FS for the IT department. What happened there was that the mbox headers went from looking like this: From owner-hcrcstaff Mon Aug 24 14:53:29 2009 >From majordom Mon Aug 24 14:53:29 2009 the rest of the normal header here To looking like this: From owner-hcrcstaff Mon Aug 24 14:53:29 2009 Status: RO X-UID: 871476 Content-Length: 1915 >From majordom Mon Aug 24 14:53:29 2009 normal header lines here It appears that the Status, X-UID and Content-Length lines were inserted just under the top line of the header in every old mailing list mailing email header...and not in any other mailing As a result of this, = these emails appear in the email client's TOC listing with blank Sender and Subject fields, even though the data for that is properly in the header further down = This happens both in TBird and Horde webmail. = All these emails (some 300, going back to 2008) are listed in one block, in proper order for their actual date, as having the datestamp of 5AM, when I was bringing everything back up. Unfortunately, because of time pressures, I can say exactly what I was doing then. = I never took down my TBird session while doing this process...and I imagine that others, who haven't said anything and presumably didn't have this problem, left their TBird or IMAP email client up... Does this anomaly bring to mind anything to you? FWIW, I plan on doing the students' homedir FS early tomorrow morning. This time I'll be more scrupulous about tracking things AND I will take down the mailing list and login servers to remove the possibility that they had something to do with this... dovecot -n output # 1.1.15: /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf # OS: AIX 3 0001378F4C00 listen: *:143 ssl_listen: *:993 disable_plaintext_auth: no verbose_ssl: yes login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login login_executable: /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap-login login_processes_count: 12 login_max_processes_count: 774 max_mail_processes: 1024 verbose_proctitle: yes first_valid_uid: 200 mail_location: mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u:INDEX=/var/dcindx/%u mbox_write_locks: fcntl mbox_dirty_syncs: no auth default: passdb: driver: pam userdb: driver: passwd -- ==== Once upon a time, the Internet was a friendly, neighbors-helping-neighbors small town, and no one locked their doors. Hello all, I'm not sure if this question is better posed to a Fedora group because I have only had this problem since I upgraded from F9 to F11, but I figured that the specialised knowledge here might help me more... I have been getting these entries in syslog since upgrading. Today for instance I got: **Unmatched Entries** dovecot: Dovecot v1.2.0 starting up (core dumps disabled): 1 Time(s) dovecot: IMAP(mark): fchown() failed with file /home/mark/Mail/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index.log.newlock: Operation not permitted: 1 Time(s) dovecot: IMAP(mark): fchown() failed with file /home/mark/Mail/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index.tmp: Operation not permitted: 1 Time(s) and yesterday I had: **Unmatched Entries** dovecot: IMAP(helena): fchown() failed with file /home/wife/mail/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index.tmp: Operation not permitted: 1 Time(s) dovecot: IMAP(toby): fchown() failed with file /home/son/mail/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index.cache.lock: Operation not permitted: 1 Time(s) dovecot: IMAP(toby): fchown() failed with file /home/son/mail/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index.log.newlock: Operation not permitted: 1 Time(s) dovecot: IMAP(toby): fchown() failed with file /home/son/mail/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index.tmp: Operation not permitted: 3 Time(s) The permissions are as follows: ls -la /home/mark/Mail/.imap/INBOX/ total 328 drwx------. 2 mark mark 4096 2009-08-18 15:32 . drwx------. 84 mark mark 4096 2009-03-05 21:53 .. -rw-------. 1 mark mark 7472 2009-08-18 15:32 dovecot.index -rw-------. 1 mark mark 286720 2009-08-19 11:46 dovecot.index.cache -rw-------. 1 mark mark 5380 2009-08-19 12:43 dovecot.index.log Those of wife and son are similar. As I access my mailbox several times a day (and certainly did yesterday) from several different mail clients I am surprised that the error count is only 1 for most the above entries. Is this being caused by some sort of cron job (logrotate perhaps)? Any ideas? All help / suggestions gratefully received... Thanks Mark

[Dovecot] Load spikes on NFS server, multiple index updaters.
by Jorgen Lundman 26 Aug '09

26 Aug '09

We are occasionally experiencing trouble where the NFS server's load will shoot over 60+. (Normal of sub 1.0). I have been hunting this for a while, and I believe it comes down to "deliver". System setup: NFS servers: x4540 Solaris 10 x64 ZFS over NFS. NFS clients: Solaris 10 x64 postfix-2.4.1 with dovecot-1.1.11 deliver. What appears to happen, when I check for nfsstat per process, is that I see 4 processes (in this case on vmx04) taking up majority of NFS ops: root@vmx04:/var/tmp# ./nfsclientstats.pl process read write readdir getattr setattr lookup access create remove rename mkdir rmdir 24303 0 0 1 19 0 190 171 0 0 0 0 0 24551 0 0 1 18 0 180 162 0 0 0 0 0 26099 0 0 1 18 0 180 162 0 0 0 0 0 295 0 0 1 18 0 180 162 0 0 0 0 0 6793 3 0 0 0 0 5 5 0 0 0 0 0 7234 0 1 0 2 0 9 9 0 1 0 0 0 Checking what these processes are doing, I find the following happening: 26099: getdents64(8, 0xCE7A4000, 8192) = 8136 26099: stat64("/export/censored/mail/cur/1223013930.V4700010I69f93eM483098.vmx02.unix:2,S", 0x08047930) = 0 26099: stat64("/export/censored/mail/cur/1222066290.V4700007I67562bM241839.vmx04.unix:2,S", 0x08047930) = 0 26099: stat64("/export/censored/mail/cur/1225325373.V4700008I94a1f9M286935.vmx04.unix:2,S", 0x08047930) = 0 26099: stat64("/export/censored/mail/cur/1236170307.V4700002I67ca03M310418.vmx06.unix:2,", 0x08047930) = 0 26099: stat64("/export/censored/mail/cur/1223581462.V4700011I69ffd6M720814.vmx02.unix:2,S", 0x08047930) = 0 Very well, so it is rebuilding the dovecot.index, or recalculating the user's quota usage. Is the directory large? root@vmx04# ls -l /export/censored/mail/cur/|wc -l 199626 You bet! But what is annoying is that if I also check process 24303, 24551 and 295, they are scanning the SAME user's directory. 295: stat64("/export/censored/mail/cur/1230544947.V4700004I11d1d7fM492433.vmx04.unix:2,S", 0x08047930) = 0 295: stat64("/export/censored/mail/cur/1223003964.V4700007I68932dM763546.vmx04.unix:2,S", 0x08047930) = 0 So, in vmx04 we have 4 processes working in one user's giant directory, and on the other vmx clients, many more. Could the semantics to 're-computing dovecot.index' be done such that the first "deliver" process locks it to do the work, and sub-sequent deliver processes will return temporary failures, until the work has finished. Has it been already addresses in dovecot-1.1.18? Advice please. [Dovecot] scalability and arhive ideas
by fernando＠dfcom.com.br 25 Aug '09

25 Aug '09

Hi, I´m reading the past topics related to archive and scalability of dovecot, they are all very interesting. Here, I´m using two dovecot proxies in front of five storages pairs, and we split the domain´s accounts among those servers. So, we can share the i/o load and if one server goes down only few accounts of the domain stops (not all of them). But, we began to have space problems - and the solution would be insert more and more storage servers. So I was searching for some archive solutions (hard links - at S.O level, or some dovecot extension). A friend told me that he knows an ISP that share even the mailbox of the users among many servers - this is very weird and (at same time) very interesting approach. Instead of put all messages into one maildir and this maildir into one server, this "maildir" (?) is spplited among many servers - so, if one servers fails the account is still acessible and they move old/big messages to a new "cheap" storage - archiving transparently. Well, maybe it´s an stupid idea, but couldn´t dovecot imap/pop proxy do the same ? I mean, imagine the following scenario: 1- Proxy does an user account sql - today the return is (among other data), the final server IP, but it could be the storage servers for this account 2- Proxy does parallel connections (instead of today´s one connection with the final server). Retrieve the messages and caches locally where the message is. If the cache is lost, no problem, it just connects again and re-cache them. 3- When a message is deleted/flagged, etc - it has the cache (allowing it to know where send the command to), when a message inserted (as sent folder) - the system can have the 'default storage' where the messages are delivered and saved to - the other storages are just for archiving (or even a round-robin delivery !? - hard to control). Problems: 1- Have the cache at proxy level. 2- Quota calculation (how the delivery process can check this ?) 3- Maybe mixing proxy connection and this new approach is not easy way. 4- the more servers, the more time waiting their answers (imagine one of them answering slowly). Advantages: 1- No local mounts at storage level - (as nfs and other network mounted partitions). 2- Servers independency - if space is at a critical value, insert a pair of servers, move messages there, insert the servers in the sql answer (server1, server2, server3, ... , serverN). 3- Scalability - the more servers, the more i/o load you can share. Well, sorry for the long post...but I hope to collaborate with some ideas (even if they are stupid :( ) Regards, Fernando Bertasso Figaro

[Dovecot] dovecot-auth failed: Not enough space
by S. A. Woltering 25 Aug '09

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Dear all, I've been trying to get a Dovecot IMAP service running under HP-UX 11.23, IA64. The system has 6GB of spare space under /var and at least the same amount of RAM free at the current time. I've compiled from the latest source (1.2.4), using the following options: # CC="/opt/aCC/bin/aCC" ./configure --prefix=/opt/dovecot ... usual make && make install My config file follows at the end. In essence, every time I attempt to start dovecot (/opt/dovecot/sbin/dovecot, with no options) I get the following on the command line: Warning: Last died with error (see error log for more information): Auth process died too early - shutting down Info: If you have trouble with authentication failures, enable auth_debug setting. See http://wiki.dovecot.org/WhyDoesItNotWork Looking into /var/adm/syslog/mail.log, the lines associated with this run read: Aug 24 14:46:25 bilbo dovecot: Dovecot v1.2.4 starting up Aug 24 14:46:25 bilbo dovecot: Fatal: execv(/opt/dovecot/libexec/dovecot/dovecot-auth) failed: Not enough space Aug 24 14:46:25 bilbo dovecot: Fatal: Auth process died too early - shutting down I've switched over to using a static passwd file type auth and I still get the same error. [Dovecot] Aborted: Worker is buggy

I upgraded from 1.1 to 1.2 a couple months ago and now we are seeing this: Aug 20 05:34:38 kelly dovecot: auth(default): auth workers: Auth request was queued for 7 seconds, 10 left in queue ... Aug 20 05:34:38 kelly dovecot: auth(default): BUG: Worker sent reply with id 53, expected 54 Aug 20 05:34:38 kelly dovecot: auth(default): worker-server(xxx(a)example.com,dd.dd.dd.dd): Aborted: Worker is buggy Aug 20 05:34:38 kelly dovecot: auth(default): passdb(xxx(a)example.com,dd.dd.dd.dd): Fallbacking to expired data from cache When I attempt to restart dovecot there is one dovecot-auth process that won't die and keeps the server from starting. A simple 'killall dovecot-auth' takes care of it and the server is able to start. I'm not using anything exotic, dovecot config below. The most curious fact is that we have identical servers running the same version of dovecot (1.2.3, happened under 1.2.1 as well) talking to the same MySQL database and both develop the problem at the same time. The database is under considerable stress at the time this occurs as the policyd tables are being cleaned. But this happens twice per hour and only sometimes does dovecot have trouble. I'm working to move the policyd database elsewhere, but of course this shouldn't happen in any case. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks! [Dovecot] Per user namespace
by Ashley M. Kirchner 25 Aug '09

25 Aug '09

I'm in the process of upgrading an old server which is running uw-imap to a new one running Dovecot. With the old machine, unfortunately, my users had the opportunity to store their e-mails in various locations. For example, some have their mail boxes stored in ~/mail/[various mbox files], others ALSO have a ~/mail/clients/[various mbox files] and yet others simply stored them in their ~/ path (thanks to the old IMAP). Is there a way to create per-user namespaces? I don't want to create a "mail/", "mail/clients/", etc., etc. global name space that will end up showing up on everyone's mail client, nor do I want to individually change each user's setup (and rewrite their .subscriptions file). Any solutions here, or am I SOL? AMK4 -- W | It's not a bug - it's an undocumented feature. +-------------------------------------------------------------------- Ashley M. [Dovecot] quota bug
by Amr Shahin 24 Aug '09

24 Aug '09

Hello i use dovecot for our mail server, it's installed on about 8 servers and it's doing really good, thanks for the great effort :-) however, i have been facing a quota problem recently, dovecot says that some users are using for example (700MB) while they are actually using (10MB), i solve this by removing *maildirsize *which solves it, is there any fix for this bug ? thanks and regards Amr Shahin

Re: [Dovecot] Dovecot and LDAP-Quotas

Hi Timo, thank you for your reply. I take the configuration from http://www.linuxmail.info/postfix-dovecot-ldap-centos-5/ especially the dovecot-configuration for passdb and userdb. As you mentioned in your reply I added the userdb ldap with a symbolic link on the original dovecot-ldap.conf: userdb: driver: ldap args: /etc/dovecot-ldap-userdb.conf but with no success. Any hints? I have another question: Does Dovecot expect a special "field type" for the ldap quota field (for ex. integer)? [Dovecot] Dovecot LDA
by Wouter van der Schagt 24 Aug '09

Good morning, Still not having luck to get the LDA to work, using Qmail + Vpopmail and read the wiki. I'm using: auth default { mechanisms = plain passdb vpopmail { } userdb vpopmail { } user = vpopmail count = 1 ssl_require_client_cert = no } Which work well for authenticating users, however when using the following in a .qmail file: |/var/qmail/bin/preline -f /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver -d $EXT@$USER I get the following error message: Error:_userdb_lookup:_connect(/usr/local/var/run/dovecot//auth-master)_failed:_No_such_file_or_directory/ Eventhough it should have been created (I think) in the protocol lda section of the config file. I specifieD: auth_socket_path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-master However I thought since using vpopmail I don't need to use the auth-master ? or am I missing something? Sincerely, - Wouter van der Schagt

Hi List I use dovecot with LDA deliver, have quotas for my users use postfix as MTA server. as it could limit or refuse delivery of mail once the user has exceeded the limit of the quota? As in my configuration could define multiple LDAP servers? I have two servers with Active Directory, a PDC and a BDC, but I would specify both in the same configuration. for when the ldap server 1 has problems, authenticating against Ldap 2 . Thanks Michel

[Dovecot] Problems with dovecot/sendmail combi.
by Roger Berger 24 Aug '09

24 Aug '09

Hi, I am really stuck here. I am trying to setup imap for an external mail server. I have a freebsd server running sendmail / dovecot. I am transfering the existing mail from an exchange 2003 server to the mailserver using imapsync. This works fine, but gives errors when it tries to make a submap, also thunderbird gives an error "Mailbox doesn't allow inferior mailboxes" when I try to make a submap. I found out that it has something to do with the mbox not able to have submaps and there should be a workaround using namespaces. I tried several setups but keep getting errors. Does anybody know how to configure namespaces to allow submaps? dovecot -n # 1.2.3: /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf # OS: FreeBSD 6.4-STABLE i386 log_path: /var/log/dovecot.log protocols: imap imaps pop3 pop3s disable_plaintext_auth: no verbose_ssl: yes login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login login_executable(default): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(imap): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(pop3): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/pop3-login login_process_per_connection: no login_processes_count: 4 verbose_proctitle: yes first_valid_gid: 0 mail_access_groups: mail mail_location: mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u mail_debug: yes mail_executable(default): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap mail_executable(imap): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap mail_executable(pop3): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/pop3 mail_plugin_dir(default): /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap mail_plugin_dir(imap): /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap mail_plugin_dir(pop3): /usr/local/lib/dovecot/pop3 imap_client_workarounds(default): delay-newmail outlook-idle netscape-eoh tb-extra-mailbox-sep imap_client_workarounds(imap): delay-newmail outlook-idle netscape-eoh tb-extra-mailbox-sep imap_client_workarounds(pop3): pop3_client_workarounds(default): pop3_client_workarounds(imap): pop3_client_workarounds(pop3): outlook-no-nuls oe-ns-eoh namespace: type: private separator: / prefix: #mbox/ location: mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u inbox: yes list: yes subscriptions: yes namespace: type: private separator: / location: maildir:~/mail list: yes subscriptions: yes lda: postmaster_address: postmaster(a)example.com sendmail_path: /usr/sbin/sendmail auth default: verbose: yes debug: yes debug_passwords: yes passdb: driver: pam userdb: driver: passwd mbox is in /var/mail/%u and home dir is in /home/mailusers/%u

[Dovecot] sieve vacation response
by Jure Pečar 24 Aug '09

24 Aug '09

Hello, we're implementing a dovecot 1.2.1 with sieve 0.1.7 and managesieve 0.11.7. We're having problems with creating sieve scripts so that vacation works. Our script looks like this: require ["fileinto", "vacation"]; if address :matches ["To", "Cc"] "*someone(a)example.com*" { if not header :matches "X-Spam-Status" "Yes*" { vacation :days 1 :subject "test" "autoresponder test."; keep; } } And when sent and delivered to someone(a)example.com, we get this in the log: dovecot: deliver(username): sieve: msgid=<...>: discarding vacation response for message implicitly delivered to <username(a)fqdn.hostname.com> Our final recipients are in the form of username(a)fqdn.hostname.com; it looks like this is being matched in sieve as address. But we want to match against original recipient address, not address after alias expansion. Any ideas? -- Jure Pečar http://jure.pecar.org http://f5j.eu

[Dovecot] High load with Thunderbird
by Emmanuel Seyman 24 Aug '09

24 Aug '09

Hello, all. I'm using Dovecot 1.0.15 on our internal mail server and I'm seeing a high load from one of our users. This user uses Thunderbird (with the IMAP protocol) and the load average of the server goes through the roof every once in a while. I'ld like to understand why we're seeing this and whether the blame should be put on Thunderbird or on Dovecot. Has anyone ever seen this before? Emmanuel

[Dovecot] SOT: Removing _extra_ linefeeds from MSOutlook(?) messages
by Roderick A. Anderson 24 Aug '09

24 Aug '09

I realize this is sorta off topic but my searches using Google have got me mostly no where. So I thought I'd ask here as there is a lot of _past Postfix_ mail handling issues discussed. The issue is; I have to deal with a lot of messages that come from MS Outlook users and sometimes they are replies to replies to replies ... My reading indicates it has a little to do with HTML composed messages and the format=flowed declaration. This produces messages with *lot* of extra line feeds. Makes the messages nearly unreadable -- in Thunderbird. I'm sure others have got two line (sentence) messages that took 6+ lines to display. Then when they are replies or forwards it is even more. Every line gets two NLs/CRLFs. Anyone have a suggestion of how to _strip_ multiple line feeds from a message? Is there a sieve method/way? I don't want to fiddle with all the users emails just my own. Pointers, ideas, clues? \\||/ Rod --

[Dovecot] critical X-UID reordering problem after upgrade from 1.1 to 1.2
by robh＠cs.indiana.edu 23 Aug '09

23 Aug '09

We upgraded our imap server hardware and went from dovecot 1.1.3 to 1.2.3 in the process and have been having a critical problem since. I believe I've tracked it down to X-UID reordering that dovecot seemed to do to the mbox format (I know, I know...) inboxes. The problem has manifest itself in several ways with different mail clients but the general problem is that the mail clients have gotten confused about which message is which. For example, thunderbird will display the wrong information about a message in the header listing but then show the correct data in the message display window when you actually open the message. As you can imagine, this is causing all kinds of user problems. Here is a very simplified explanation of what I'm seeing. Imagine that the inbox had 5 messages with X-UID values 1, 3, 5, 6, and 9 before the upgrade. After the upgrade the X-UIDs were reordered so these same 5 messages now might have X-UID values of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Thunderbird then shows the summary information like this: Subject/Sender/Date for message 1 Subject/Sender/Date for message 2 Subject/Sender/Date for message 2 Subject/Sender/Date for message 4 Subject/Sender/Date for message 3 Now, if you actually open the 5th message it shows the right message body but the summary information is for the message that *used* to have X-UID 5 (which is now the 3rd message). So, the thunderbird cache is out of sync and I can fix it by removing the .msf file for that mailbox but, as you can imagine, the prospect of getting all the users to remove their .msf/.pst/?? cache files is daunting, to say the least. I've seen discussions about similar things happening with mbox format inboxes but they all seem to be in the context of some ancient 0.xx version of dovecot with known mbox processing bugs. But, I went from a reasonably current 1.1.3 version to 1.2.3. Right after seeing the problem, I upgraded to the just released 1.2.4 but either that didn't address the problem or, if it did, the reordering damage was already done by version 1.2.3. So, my 2 questions are: 1) Anyone know why this would have happened and whether it is a dovecot problem or something I botched? I folded all the local config changes I had made to the 1.1.3 conf file into the stock 1.2.3 conf file so they should have been identical modulo changes in the distro. And, our local config changes are really minimal. 2) Is there anything I can do now other than getting all the users to remove their .msf/.pst/etc files? It sure would be grand if there was something I could do on the server side that would magically cause all the client-side caches to be invalidated. I'm hesitant to strip the inboxes of all the X-IMAPbase and X-UID lines because I'm not sure what the ramifications of that might be. Here are some other random thoughts in case they might be related: - The old server was running 32bit RHEL4 and the new one 64bit RHEL5 - I'm using the pre-built dovecot rpms from atrpms.net - The dovecot index cache is kept in /var/cache/dovecot/indexes and I did not copy that over from the old server to the new assuming it would just be rebuilt. Any and all help is greatly appreciated! --Rob =============== dovecot -n output follows ================== # 1.2.4: /etc/dovecot.conf # OS: Linux 2.6.18-128.4.1.el5 x86_64 Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.3 (Tikanga) protocols: imaps pop3s ssl: required ssl_cert_file: /etc/mail.pem ssl_key_file: /etc/mail.pem login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login login_executable(default): /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(imap): /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(pop3): /usr/libexec/dovecot/pop3-login login_max_processes_count: 512 max_mail_processes: 2048 mail_max_userip_connections(default): 15 mail_max_userip_connections(imap): 15 mail_max_userip_connections(pop3): 10 first_valid_uid: 200 mail_location: mbox:~/mail/:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u:INDEX=/var/cache/dovecot/indexes/%u mail_executable(default): /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap mail_executable(imap): /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap mail_executable(pop3): /usr/libexec/dovecot/pop3 mail_plugin_dir(default): /usr/lib64/dovecot/imap mail_plugin_dir(imap): /usr/lib64/dovecot/imap mail_plugin_dir(pop3): /usr/lib64/dovecot/pop3 pop3_uidl_format(default): %08Xu%08Xv pop3_uidl_format(imap): %08Xu%08Xv pop3_uidl_format(pop3): %v.%u lda: postmaster_address: postmaster(a)example.com auth default: passdb: driver: pam userdb: driver: passwd
