HI All, Is there a way to do admin authentication for a normal user in dovecot IMAP ? I have a user using PAM to store password in /etc/shadow file. I need to authenticate the user in IMAP using that password. I tried using : - I tried all combinations as below [root@mail ~]# cat /etc/shadow| grep -i ajay ajay.lal:CM730q8foSA9A:13545:0:99999:7::: [root@mail ~]# telnet 0 143 Trying 0.0.0.0... Hi, Sorry for the change of thread, I just signed up to the list so I couldn't reply to the earlier message. Let me clarify the issue that Nikolai was describing. We're running dovecot 1.1.11 and solr 1.4. The issue is quite simple. 1. I run a search. 2. Dovecot sends a list of emails to solr 3. Solr starts indexing them 4. Solr runs into a "bad" email and we get: SEVERE: java.io.IOException: Mark invalid org.apache.solr.common.SolrException log SEVERE: java.io.IOException: Mark invalid at java.io.BufferedReader.reset(BufferedReader.java:485) at org.apache.solr.analysis.HTMLStripReader.restoreState(HTMLStripReader.java:171) at org.apache.solr.analysis.HTMLStripReader.read(HTMLStripReader.java:728) at org.apache.solr.analysis.HTMLStripReader.read(HTMLStripReader.java:742) at java.io.Reader.read(Reader.java:123) at org.apache.lucene.analysis.CharTokenizer.next(CharTokenizer.java:109) at org.apache.lucene.index.DocInverterPerField.processFields(DocInverterPerField.java:159) at org.apache.lucene.index.DocFieldConsumersPerField.processFields(DocFieldConsumersPerField.java:36) at org.apache.lucene.index.DocFieldProcessorPerThread.processDocument(DocFieldProcessorPerThread.java:234) at org.apache.lucene.index.DocumentsWriter.updateDocument(DocumentsWriter.java:765) ... 5. All the above email messages that were indexed are rolled back, and we're stuck. I think that the solution should be simple too :-). When solr runs into a bad email, it should just ignore it and keep indexing. This seems much more robust since the emails are coming from a variety of sources, and we can assume that some of them are going to generate badly formated emails. Seems like having a few bad emails not indexed is much better than the current situation of a bad email stopping all searching. I don't understand the architecture enough between fts, fts_solr and solr to know where this should be solved. Ideally, it would be a simple directive to solr. Hi everyone Been spending the whole day on the wiki and in the list archives on using dovecot for POP3 mail. I'd like to present my findings and ask for some feedback. Our current software setup: * Courier-IMAP running POP3/IMAP * Postfix MTA * MySQL backend for user and login info As for the system layout, it looks like this: * NFS server which is the same server that houses single Courier-IMAP installation (Gentoo, 3GB memory) * 2x Postfix instances delivering to NFS * Mail directory structure: /mail/e/ex/example.com/user Usage: * Currently reaching in excess of 1,200 concurrent connections, traffic roughly 36GB per day * 90% POP3 (mostly pop+delete), 10% IMAP * ~170GB of mail on disk Current problems experienced: * Massive load averages (>500) * Memory exhaustion (3GB) * Server looses network connectivity (related to massive loads) I've got a new server ready for action, well after mail directories have been rsync'd over. Will have 8GB of memory and much fast discs. I'm looking at giving Dovecot + Postfix/LDA a go. From my research today it seems that running a POP server without LDA (or without the W=(\d+) filename field) is a futile business. I'm running Gentoo, and the stable release in portage is currently dovecot 1.1.7, with 1.1.14 being available but masked. Long stories short, will Dovecot with the Postfix/LDA give performance equal than Courier-IMAP or improved (because of the cached message sizes)? Yes. Now i have two new issue: 1. "Content-Type:" header in mail wrong - so it's TEXT/mspowerpoint for example, but it's binary *.ppt file. 2. many html from repository change-set(many commit's to html) in text/plain mail In both cases we have "Error 500" from solr (HTMLStripReader class) (in solr log: "Marked inlalid"). And in both cases we can not detect this in dovecot code (or it's hard to do). So for now i need some method to ignore "bad" messages. [Dovecot] NTLM configuration

Hi all, Im actually running samba 3 as a primary domain controller. The workstations of my network are all running windows (some xp, some vista) and use Outlook 2007 as a web client. Samba is set up with the following parameters : security = user passdb backend = tdbsam unix password sync = Yes domain master = yes domain logons = yes Everything works fine on samba side, meaning that the machines are part of the domain, and users do authenticate correctly. For the moment, the users are getting their mail (pop3 or imap) through dovecot (running on the same box as samba). Dovecot is configured with mechanisms = plain. I would like to secure it by using mechanisms = ntlm, but still using the system users. I found much information on how to authenticate against an active directory, but nothing that allows me to keep my actual authentication against system users. Indeed, if I just change the mechanisms to ntlm, dovecot does not start anymore complaining that NTLM mechanism can't be supported with given passdbs Any help would be much appreciated as I already tried the whole day yesterday to get it working Best regards, Cédric Laruelle

[Dovecot] Testing POP3 with telnet - password always wrong

Hello, I just installed the postfix and dovecot packages according to the document, http://www.debianadmin.com/debian-mail-server-setup-with-postfix-dovecot-sa… And it has been quite helpful. It looks like Dovecot works because I can communicate with it on port 110. I can't help but feel I am doing something stupid though... The web page listed above told me to test the POP3 server using Outlook Express, and well, I am just not going to do that. Not when I can do it by hand... legg@debian:~$ telnet 192.168.10.171 110 Trying 192.168.10.171... Connected to 192.168.10.171. Escape character is '^]'. +OK Dovecot ready. USER test(a)192.168.10.171 +OK PASS password1 -ERR Authentication failed. But why do I always get the password wrong? I twice set the password for the test user and also restarted Dovecot, but the password is always wrong. Note that disable_plaintext_auth=no. I'm sure there must be something stupid I have overlooked. Any suggestions? Thank you very much!!!! [Dovecot] Unable To Send Mail

I just installed CentOS 5 + Postfix + Dovecot. Now When I send mail via telnet from one user to another via Postfix (MTA), I have no problem. The recipient gets the message perfectly. Now this tells me that Postfix is working fine (I assume) but then I configured Dovecot to use IMAP4 and then configured my Thunderbird client. Now all the messages I previously sent using Telnet showed up in Thunderbird Inbox but then when I attempt to send a message via Thunderbird, the message appears to send fine however the recipient never gets it and I get no delivery failrures back of any kind. I check the Postfix (MTA) mail queue and it shows empty. What is causing this anyone? Does anyone know why this is not working? [Dovecot] Disabling users whilst still allowing logins with a 'master password'

Hi, I'm having trouble coming up with an authentication configuration that does what we want with dovecot, and thought it would be worth passing it by the list in case anyone can spot an easy fix, or confirm my suspicions that code changes are required. You should probably be aware that this is to support a migration away from Dovecot to a certain Microsoft-provided mail platform, so if this makes you feel uncomfortable, you may choose not to respond ;) We have the following configuration: - the passdb in use is pam (for pam_krb5) - the userdb in use is passwd (for nss_ldap) - GSSAPI is also supported - We support both IMAP and POP - Dovecot 1.0.9 - users have their own uid/gid and the following requirement, in order to support the migration process: - Access to mailstore should be allowed by means of a master password or user (ideally configurable, so we have a fine degree of control over which users are exposed to the migration process at a given time) - Migration process accesses mailstore via IMAP - During migration, users should not be allowed to log in with their Kerberos password, nor with GSSAPI We've achieved the first requirement with master passwords roughly as described at the bottom of http://wiki.dovecot.org/Authentication/MasterUsers by configuring another passdb with the master password hash in place for the users we want to be enabled to migrate. Our standard auth config looks like: auth default { gssapi_hostname = imap210.herald.ox.ac.uk mechanisms = plain login gssapi passdb pam { } userdb passwd { args = blocking=yes } socket listen { master { path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-master } } } and my first try at satisfying my requirements was: auth default { gssapi_hostname = imap-dev.herald.ox.ac.uk mechanisms = plain login gssapi passdb sql { args = /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql-master.conf } passdb sql { args = /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql-deny.conf deny = yes } passdb pam { } userdb passwd { args = blocking=yes } socket listen { master { path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-master } } } where /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql-master.conf describes a query representing those users accessible by the master password (and a hash of the master password) and /etc/dovecot/dovecot-deny.conf describes a query representing those users who should not be allowed to log in with their normal password (or GSSAPI). This almost works, but unfortunately (as documented) the GSSAPI mechanism does not check any passdbs, so does not get checked against the deny passdb. Normally to disable logins for a user we chmod their mail store to 0 so they can't access it, which has the same effect, but this obviously also prevents the master password from being able to access it. It would seem to be generally useful to be able to check GSSAPI logins against a deny passdb, but is this a valid code change? Alternatively, could the *userdbs* could be extended to cope with the idea of a deny form, since the GSSAPI login process already uses them (although it would have to return USERDB_RESULT_USER_UNKNOWN). Alternatively, does anyone have any other ideas about how I could achieve the same effect? Thanks for listening. Send mail body with wrong Content-Type. If put this in maildir indexing raise 500 error. If fix Content-Type to "application/octet-stream" all OK. Because TEXT/*; content dovecot try to index and solr raise 500, on each search. And in both cases we can not detect this in dovecot code (or it's hard to do). So for now i need some method to ignore "bad" messages. [Dovecot] Maildir bugs

I just found out that when using deliver or saving mails with IMAP APPEND command there was all kinds of race condition bugs that could cause e.g.: dovecot-uidlist: Duplicate file entry at line 18: 1241457213.M690227P32531.host,W=3359:2,T (uid 170019 -> 170020) And who knows what else. If you've run into those problems, these patches should help: http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.1/rev/6bbe27c32cb8 http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.1/rev/003bebac2c76 http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.1/rev/96c8632775df They are pretty large though, hopefully won't break anything. But at least my stress tests can no longer break it. I'll probably release v1.1.15 RC in a few days so at least some people can try to break it before the final v1.1.15 :)

[Dovecot] questions about compiling Sieve plugin

I'm using the info on the wiki to try to compile the sieve plugin for dovecot on a server running Debian Etch, but I'm getting nowhere because I'm stuck trying to find the directory to use in the "--with-dovecot=" argument when running the configure script. The wiki says: Compilation is identical among the CMUSieve and the new Sieve plugin. Use --with-dovecot=<path> to point to dovecot-config file's directory. There are two possibilities where this could exist: 1. If you configured Dovecot with --enable-header-install, you'll have dovecot-config installed in $prefix/lib/dovecot/ directory. 2. Compiled Dovecot sources' root directory. The problem is that there is no such file called "dovecot-config" on the server, and dovecot was installed from the Debian repositories, not compiled. There is no /usr/lib/dovecot or /usr/local/lib/dovecot. I figured that, as is the case with many Debian packages, the libraries needed to compile would be included in a "dovecot-dev" package, but I checked and there is no such package in the Debian repos. [Dovecot] login_max_processes_count and logs

Hello, Our server reach today the login_max_processes_count. Dovecot works well and don't accept any new connection. But it doesn't log anything about this problem : we are blind why the connection is refused for the clients. Hi i'm using dovecot with virtual users from a postgresql database backend on a Debian Lenny system. I'm using qmail as MTA. Mostly everything seems to work ok , except the fact that the mail delivered never reaches virtual user's INBOX. Hi list, just a small issue with deliver_log_format. Great. Thank you so much for responding. It hangs at Tying 127.0.0.1 The funny part is that one day it works fine and the next day it just hangs. And its not that the service is completely unresponsive. If 200 users try to connect, 10 get through and are able to download. However which 10 get through depends on luck! Its been going on for the past one week and really driving me crazy. I have changed everthing including the server, but the problem persists. How do I get a clue where the problem is? Am badly in need of help here. Problem, Unable to identifie smtp.solutions.com as a trusted site. with thunderbird, and MS outbreak is failing too. server works great with the dialog box being clicked over and over. part of the info in the cert. Object Identifier (2 5 4 5 ) = 07969287 CN = Go Daddy Secure Certification Authority OU = http://certificates.godaddy.com/repository O = GoDaddy.com, Inc. L = Scottsdale ST = Arizona C = US dovecot.conf ssl_cert_file = /NFS/exim/new.pem ssl_key_file = /NFS/exim/smtp.solutions.com.key { created the req for cert with this key on this server } inside the new.pem smtp.solutions.com.crt ( paid $29 for this ) gd-class2-root.crt gd_intermediate.crt I have tried many tests about 5 hours worth using the ssl_ca_file and pointing it to different files I have from godaddy. and various combinations of things I found on the net. can anybody provide a cookie cutter here do this: with a godaddy $29 dollar ssl cert.. to get this dovecot server running.. { by the way I have great luck in apache with these things.. } thanks in advance Terry

This is 64bit AIX 5.3. Looking through previous versions of dovecot, I see this warning. I didn't realize this was something bad until today. My environment uses mbox/mbox-snarf plugin. In some maildir's present messages with wrong "Content-Type: " fields in attachments. I have mails to several addresses mixed up in several POP3 boxes and need to sort them out and deliver them based on the target address. e.g. michael@domain1 and michael@domain2 go to my box etc. I can't see where I identify the addresses and allocate the appropriate storage area. [Dovecot] Installed include files

Currently when using configure --enable-header-install and doing make install the include files get installed to their own subdirectories, like: /usr/local/include/dovecot/src/lib/ /usr/local/include/dovecot/src/lib-mail/ ..etc.. But using that is kind of annoying, because you have to give -I paths to all of them with their full directories. The worst thing about that is that it requires having some kind of a --with-dovecot=path configure parameter. It would be nice if you could simply do: CPPFLAGS=-I/usr/local/include/dovecot ./configure Just like for any other include option. But that's not really possible. One possible way to fix it would be to just install all the .h files to a single directory, /usr/local/include/dovecot/ and make sure there aren't any conflicts (there currently are a few). But whis would make it more difficult to find out what files are related. Another possibility would be to put the subdir paths to all #include lines. Such as #include "lib-mail/mail-types.h" instead of just #include "mail-types.h". This seems kind of annoying to use, but would it be clearer? I'm not really sure. Anyone have any thoughts?

[Dovecot] Case sensitive oddity when mail delivered.

Currently running Postfix/Dovecot1.1.8 with mysql storing the user data and delivering to folders as determined by dovecot using dovecot's "deliver" as defined in postfix's master.cf Mail location is determined by mail_location = maildir:/var/spool/mail/%d/%n/Maildir If I have an account user1(a)example.com it works just fine. However, when mail is sent to USER1(a)EXAMPLE.COM it also delivers, but ends up creating a new file structure so I end up with /var/spool/mail/example.com/user1 (with lower case mail in it) and /var/spool/mail/EXAMPLE.COM/USER1 (with uppercase mail in it) which is decidedly not good. Looks to me like wherever %d and %n are pulled from is pulled out of the email, but not lower-cased. Any ideas where I would look to change this value before the email is delivered to the mailbox? Hi, list! I use Dovecot 1.1.14 at work. It is configured to manage IMAP and IMAPs. Exim is the MTA of the Network. Of course, I installed SpamAssassin and ClamAV to check all incoming E-Mails. An, of course, some E-Mail marked as Spam are Ham and some E-Mail marked as Ham are Spam... To teach SpamAssassin I create for every user two folder: "DochSpam" (for Spam E-Mails not marked) and "FalscheSpam" (for Ham E-Mails marked as Spam). Every hour a cronjob search for E-Mails in these folders and call sa-learn to teach SpamAssassin. All run perfectly, but I'd like to modify this method and call automatically the script when the user move an E-Mail to DochSpam or FalscheSpam. I searched in Google, but I cannot found any useful link... How can I trigger an action (script calling) based on event (E-Mail will be moved to a folder) in Dovecot? Thanks for your help! I want to add one Dovecot Proxy server and make him understand based on user domain - were it need to transfer a connection. I use LDAP auth based on "mail" attribute. It is possible? P.S. The user base is in a Postgres database. Hi, I have set a dovecot-1:1.0.10-1ubuntu5.1 server on top of a Ubuntu 8.04 LTS box and everything goes fine. All my users are on a LDAP database integrated via nss_ldap, so from the dovecot point of view they are all local system users. Now I want to set maildir quota for everybody, and was wondering if I could store quota limits per user on LDAP. As I read on http://wiki.dovecot.org/Quota/Dict, there seem to be no way to do that, am I right? It is ok for me to manage the current usage on Maildir++, but would like to retrieve the quota information from the LDAP server. What do you guys recommend? Thanks in advance for any hint or rtfm. Several things are still missing/broken, but at least I was just able to successfully log in using imap :) I left v1.3 hg tree there for now, but once v2.0 tree is fully usable I'll just delete the v1.3 tree. Note the new dovecot-master-example.conf, which you'll need to !include to get the services running. Some settings have also been removed because they're now more generically set in the dovecot-master.conf. I'm thinking that perhaps the config process could still be run in compatibility mode where it's able to use an existing v1.x dovecot.conf and translate the old settings to new settings.

Hi All, I am facing a very strange issue with the pop3 server for the past one week. I run my mail service using sendmail & use UW-IMAP for POP3 & IMAP service. We have around 5000 users. Suddenly for the past one week I am facing very slow connections for POP3 alone on that server. Other services such as SMTP, IMAP, telnet, ssh etc work fine. Assuming that UW-IMAP may have an issue, I download the latest dovecot, compiled it and installed it. This also gives the same issue. I do not any firewall issues nor iptables is enabled. I have checked on the network to ensure that I do not have any kind of virus or DoS attacks using an IDS. I am unable to see any 'Strange' messages in /var/log/messages or maillog. What is strange is that it works one day without any issues and the next day the problem persists. Even a telnet to localhost on port 110 is very very slow. Can someone help with any ideas on how to troubleshoot? This is our production box. Thanks V S Rao

I posted the trigger for v1.1 versions of Dovecot on the Wiki (http://wiki.dovecot.org/Quota/Dict ) and while I understand the comment posted about two process inserting at the same time, I'm not sure I understand how this is fixed in v1.2 other than via the revised trigger in the Wiki. Does someone have a known working trigger that will handle a double insert correctly? Also, out of curiosity why wasn't the code for dict written to do an update first and then an insert if this failed? That would eliminate the need for this trigger. Thanks. -Warren

Hello, I finally got an INBOX to work, but is virtual mailbox plugin only meant to create a virtual inbox, or should I be able to have an Allmails virtual folder that is viewable in my imap client? if ~/virtual/ is my location, would I create an Allmails directory in the virtual/ or virtual/INBOX/Allmails. Hi, recently I started using maildrop as a MDA doing lightweight filtering in a Postfix/Dovecot mail server combo. Only thing missing was the fact that maildrop couldn't perform user lookups against a user database that was already being served by Dovecot (for smtp auth in Postfix and for imap access obviously) in order to easily determinate proper mailbox location and home directory of my "virtual" users when delivering e-mails. I wanted to avoid having another authentication daemon running (Courier Authlib) that would be serving this data to maildrop, so I've spent some time to write an extension for maildrop that would allow it to do user lookups directly against Dovecot in a similar way how they are done by Dovecot's LDA deliver. For everyone that are using maildrop in a similar setup that may be interested in this extension, a patch against maildrop version 2.0.4 can be downloaded from the following location: http://www.max.rs/ozone/maildrop-2.0.4-dovecotauth.patch.txt When this patch is applied, maildrop will be extended with another command line option "-t", which can be used to specify the location of Dovecot's master auth socket that will be used when performing user lookups. There's a readme file (README.dovecotauth) together with patch with a little bit more information regarding the use of this extension. Using 1.2rc3 maildir format maildir /mail/example.com/j/johndoe/{cur,new,tmp} Is there more documentation and examples on how to configure virtual mailboxes, or maybe more info on what it is suppose to do? From what I could understand on the wiki, i could create a fake/virtual folder under /mail/example.com/j/johndoe/virtual/allmail/ and inside that dir create dovecot-virtual with INBOX all And then in my mail client i would see virtual/allmail and when i click that folder it shows me mail from all my normal maildir folders? Is my thinking of how to use virtual mailboxes totally off, or am I trying to use it for what it is suppose to be used for? I am starting to use Squirrelmail a little bit more to read my mail during the day and I seem to be getting this error more frequently while using Squirrelmail. Just a coincidence or do you think using Squirrelmail might have something to do with it? Hi, I use dovecot 1.0.15 on Debian Lenny. In my /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf, i use user_query = SELECT path, 33 AS uid, uid AS gid FROM mail_users WHERE alias = '%u' The result is something like this /var/alternc/mail/d/denis_collectifs.net and is the correct location (the Maildir is created by an script) But the problem is that dovecot creates (when you log in for the first time) a directory in the form of the exact address. Here for example, /var/alternc/mail/d/denis(a)collectifs.net And so all connections will be on an empty location. How is it possible to resolve this? As mail_location I have this "maildir:/var/alternc/mail/%1u/%u/Maildir" which is not really correct. [Dovecot] Mailbox is locked?

Hello, I recently upgraded from Dovecot 1.1.8 to 1.1.14, and I've started to get errors I never got before. Specifically, I'm getting "Mailbox is locked, will abort in xx seconds" errors. My mail client (mutt) will just sit there in the background (presumably in IDLE) and randomly will show this error (I THINK it has something to do with delivering new messages to the folder; I use the dovecot LDA). Nothing else about my configuration has changed, just the version of dovecot. Does anyone know what could be causing these? I assume it has something to do with the index files, but... Nothing interesting shows up in the log files. How do I get rid of these error messages? Or even begin tracking them down? [Dovecot] overnight clients causing lockfiles to be converted to root-owned messages on debian lenny

Greetings all, After running for more than a year without issue on debian lenny while it was in the testing- we're now experiencing problems under Lenny/Stable. Dovecot now converts some sort of lockfile into messages, and they're owned by root. The result is a mess; clients can't read their mailboxes with the root-owned files, and when the file is changed to be owned by them, many mail clients don't like the zero-length message (Outlook being one major client with this "problem".) This happens to users who leave their email clients open overnight. I haven't found a cronjob that could be responsible for this. Further details- 64 bit machine, we use maildir, /var/spool/mail is on an xfs volume, and we run postfix, procmail, and spamassassin. Dovecot version is 1.0.15; the machine is fully up-to-date with Debian Stable (Lenny.) Hi, I'm having some trouble getting the expire plugin to work, and I'm not sure where to turn for troubleshooting. This is on 1.2rc3. To my dovecot.conf, I've added: mail_plugins = expire under the protocol imap and lda sections. I also added: dict { expire = mysql:/etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-expire.conf } plugin { expire = Trash 30 Trash/* 30 Spam 30 expire_dict = proxy::expire auth_socket_path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-master } /etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-expire.conf contains: -- connect = host=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock dbname=email user=XXX password=XXX map { pattern = shared/expire/$user/$mailbox table = expires value_field = expire_stamp fields { username = $user mailbox = $mailbox } } -- I created the table and granted all permissions to the user. The socket is the same one used by the auth_socket process, so that should work. Dovecot restarts fine, but the table is empty. A couple questions: First, the mailboxes to expire are stored as user(a)domain/.INBOX.Trash. How should I list them in the conf file? Also, is there any way to have the system come up to date since older emails already exist in those boxes and should be deleted. Will it detect those, or only start to delete old emails that were delivered after the plugin was enabled? Second, should the table be empty if mail has been delivered & deleted since I enabled the plugin? I assumed it would start to fill. Jeff

[Dovecot] Quota for Shared Folders

Good morning list, first of all: dovecot works really great, the performance is overwhelming (especially compared to courier), the configuration flexible as hell, it is good documented - I love this software. But as things get complicated, I think I need some additional help. I'm using dovecot to replace the currently used courier-mailserver in a shared hosting environment based on the control panel Confixx. Confixx uses per default filesystem-users, giving each mailuser a filesystem-quota, mails are stored in ~/Maildir/. The imap-logins are all in the form of "webxpy", being "webx" the customer (prefix 'web', and a increasing number), and "py" the number of the pop account. Because of the filesystem-quota we moved the indexes to another partition. This basic setup with dovecot works great, with auth directly against the confixx-database etc, imap_quota-plugin, quota-plugin working as expected. We now want to implement shared folders for each customer: all mailaccounts of a customer should be able to subscribe to per-customer shared folders in a specified maildir, thus I re-mapped the usernames with a new user_query (and password_query) to the format of "webxpy@webx" - being "webx" the virtual domain and "webxpy" the mailaccount, but still using "webxpy" as the imap-login (no need for customers to change the login). This also works, we even can control with ACL-vfiles the permissions of specified users, to enable or disable specific folders. The shared folders are specified as a new public namespace and the "domain" is part of the storage-path (see configuration at the end of this mail). To allow easier quota-management (no need to create a new system-user), the quota of the shared folders is maildir-based, with a mysql-quota-dictionary (later, all accounts will be migrated to a virtual-user-mailstorage, with only maildir-quota and no fs-quotas). But when things come to the shared quota, I currently don't know how to solve the wishes of the customer: The current solution for shared folders (at the customer's local site) is based on mdaemon, every shared folder (of a customer, not a single mail-account) has a quota assigned. This quota cannot be exceeded by the users, no more mails can be saved into the shared folders if used space exceeds the hard quota-value. As my tests have shown, dovecot uses a different approach to the quota-issue: users can always move their mails from local folders to the shared namespace, regardless of the shared quota. The quota itself is only checked when receiving new mails, where the combined quota (local + shared) may not be exceeded. If it is, the mail is not delivered to the mailbox. Our quota-config is this: > quota_rule: *:storage=50M:messages=1000 > quota_rule2: Trash:storage=50M:messages=100 > quota_rule3: shared*:storage=100M:messages=1000 (also being altered by user_query, but the scheme is the same) As of dovecot-wiki, this means: Users can save "50M + 50M + 100M" of mails in all specified Folders, so the storage-value for the "shared*"-folders works additionally to the "*"-storage-value. Different from this, we want the following to happen: If the customer exceeds the shared folders-quota, his mail-users may not move mails from INBOX to shared, this move-operation should fail with a reasonable error-message. If the local quota of a mail user is exceeded, new mails should be rejected/delayed, regardless of the shared quota-value (e.g., shared quota exceeded, but no local mails [new mail-account], mails should be delivered to INBOX). Sieve-filters are not a problem, we do not allow user-specific sieve-rules (managesieve is disabled). Hopefully, I could explain my issues to you. Hi Timo, I have another problem, this time with user shared folders: User "markus" shared the folder "ForTest" to test: SETACL "INBOX/ForTest" test akxeilrwts dovecot-acl and shared-mailboxes.db have been successfully updated. As user "test" the folder (and "#User" namespace) is not visible. [Dovecot] Dovecot -> Gmail (via POP Mail Fetcher)

I'm trying to move my entire email store from my Dovecot installation (which I normally access via IMAP) into Gmail using Gmail's Mail Fetcher (which functions over POP); and I'm running into two problems: 1. Gmail only imported 78 out of 1000+ mails in my inbox, which I'm taking to mean that Dovecot is reporting only those 78 as new. How can I get Dovecot to send all mail over as new? 2. I can't be sure of this yet (since, due to #1, Gmail doesn't seem to be downloading everything), but I'm pretty sure Dovecot is only reporting my Inbox emails over POP; is there a way I can get all my mail, from all my folders, to stream in over POP? Thanks, Neil PS. I'm not leaving Dovecot entirely, I just need to have my mail in another place in case something happens to my server...

[Dovecot] Strange behaivour with extended characters

Hi there. I am using dovecot in almost all the mail servers I configure, but I have not noticed some problems till now, when I configured a server for a japanese language based customer. Now I know, the problem is not about this customer, but it seems to be a constant in all my servers (for some reason we did not noticed that before). The situation is like this. When receving mail with extended (not only japanese) characters in the subject, Outlook Express does not recognize them. Most of our users do not use OE, but most of the japanese do. This is not all. When extended chars are also in the body, they look well when the maqil still arrives, but if forwarded to another account, or when mail is an answer to another, extended characters are not well displayed. In some tests we have done, I found more or less the same is happening when using squirrelmail. The funny thing is that the problem dos not appear when using Evolution or Outlook (the MS Office component). I move some pamrs in dovecot.conf and get some results (before moving them, the problem extended to attachements), but still remains as described. Somebody has seen such a behaivour and solved it? I was thinking to change dovecot for another agent, but will be happier using dovecot. Any suggestion? Thanks in advice.

(i've tried preline -f, without -f ${SENDER:-<>},... but nothing change for the the envelop sender syntax, alway the double ">") And that fact breaks forwardin to Gmail. [Dovecot] 0 mails available even if mails in mailbox

Hello We are currently facing the problem, that dovecot doesn't return any messages (Pop3: +OK 0 messages) even if there are messages in the cur and new directory (maildir format). The logfile does not contain any information other than login/logout. After I deleted the dovecot.index file, all messages are available and everything works as expected. According to the wiki page [1] the main index file should be synchronized when the cur and new timestamps changed. I suppose this synchronization doesn't work correctly because the problem still existed after I changed the timestamps manually. Dovecot version: 10.0.14 Operating System: FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE-p1 CPU Arch: amd64 Filesystem: NFS Clients: The problem exists on Pop3 and IMAP. It doesn't matter which client. I could reproduce the problem on outlook, thunderbird and even on telnet. I can set the log prefix for imap/pop3 processes using mail_log_prefix but the log prefix for deliver is hard-coded. (I'm using 1.1.13.) Deliver should either honor mail_log_prefix or have its own setting (deliver_log_prefix?). What do you think?

Hello Dovecot users, This is a simultaneous release of new versions of Sieve-related software for Dovecot v1.1 and v1.2. Only the Sieve implementation itself has seen significant development. The ManageSieve packages only have small fixes and the ManageSieve patches are updated as usual to match the new Dovecot releases. Changelog Sieve v0.1.5: * Ported the implementation of the Sieve include extension to the latest draft. This means that the import and export commands are replaced by a new command called global. The import and export commands are now DEPRICATED and are mere aliases for the global command. The new specification also adds the :once modifier to the include command. The also newly specified global.* variable namespace is not implemented yet as support for variable namespaces is currently missing. * Did a major rework of the multiscript support for better error handling and made sure that persistent global scripts (sieve_before/sieve_after) are always executed, even when the user does not have a script of his own and a global default is missing. + Provided basic support for the environment extension. Currenly, the name, version and host items are useful. Others are pending. + Improved error message that is presented when an unknown Sieve extension is provided as argument to the require command. Hello, I am running an asynchronously replicated mail setup. 2 servers are each running an smtp server which uses dovecot as the LDA. I am using unison to replicate mail files between servers. Before, I was using Maildir format and after reading so much good papers about the very good performance of dbox format, I decided to switch to dbox. However, I now have a very annoying problem, as mails are created with names like u.1234 and numbers are following each others. So, if there is for example a mail stored as u.1001 on both servers, and now 2 mails arrive at about the same time, 1 on each server. Then, they will both be created as u.1002, that means unison will encounter a conflict as both files are different. So my question would be, is there a way to tell the servers to increment by 2 instead of 1 and have each an offset (like you can do with mysql with auto incrementing tables for example)? That way, with former example, one mail would be stored as u.1002 and the other as u.1003. Thanks

[Dovecot] Feature Request: Control over IMP IDLE 'OK Still Here' message timings

Hi all, I would like to make a feature request regarding IMAP Idle support. Currently when a client triggers Idle support, Dovecot then sends 'OK Still Here' messages every 2 minutes. This is apparently to prevent NAT systems killing the tcp connection and disconnecting the client. However, while this may be fine for desktop clients, this rapidly drains the battery life of mobile clients such as phones. Unfortunately, the timing control on this behaviour is a c define at the top of cmd-idle.c and is only adjustable at compile-time. I have experimented with this define and find a timeout of 20 minutes between 'OK' messages is perfectly adequate for my system setup and results in a significant battery saving for my Nokia 6120c (increasing from ~ 6 hours to ~ 55 hours from full charge to low battery warning). Therefore, can you please make the timeout changeable from the config file, even if it defaults to the current 2min timing, so admins supporting mobile users can balance battery life with a need to prevent killed tcp connections. Is there an alternative to the "redirect" Sieve capability? For example: if header :contains "Subject" "Listserv" { redirect "list-user1(a)example.com"; redirect "list-user2(a)example.com"; redirect "list-user3(a)example.com"; stop; } How can I do the above without using "redirect"? I am using Dovecot 1.2RC2 with Postfix 2.5.5. Everything is running fine. I would like to start using address extensions and have e-mail automatically filtered into folders based on the folder name after the "+" in the e-mail address. I only use system users, no virtual users. I have Deliver configured in main.cf as: mailbox_command = /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver Everything I can find about setting this up applies to virtual users which I do not have. How do I get Deliver to recognize the address extension. I am sure it is easy, and I apologize for not finding the answer out myself. [Dovecot] Setup Question

I really want to try and get this plus addressing working correctly with Dovecot and Postfix. After doing some reading I think I am going to change my Postfix setup from mailbox_command to mailbox_transport. I have a few questions to make sure I am thinking correctly. All of my users are system users. Their mail is delivered directly to their "/home/<user>/Maildir" directory. Everything works great and I have no problems. Here is what I am thinking of doing. 1. Create a new vmail user and group. 2. Have all mail delivered for each user to the "/home/vmail/<user>/" directory. All mail will be owned by vmail, but that is okay since Dovecot is the only thing touching the mail files anyway. 3. Change the mail_location setting in dovecot.conf to "mail_location = /home/vmail/%u 4. Uncomment the auth_socket_path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-master setting in dovecot.conf 5. Switch Postfix's main.cf to use "mailbox_transport = dovecot" and put the following line in master.cf: 1. dovecot unix - n n - - pipe flags=DR user=vmail:vmail argv=/usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver -f ${sender} -d ${recipient} -n -m ${extension} 6. Copy the current users mail to the new vmail location. What is the best way to copy it preserving date and time stamps on the mail? Did I cover all of the steps are am I missing something? [Dovecot] Active Directory LDAP authentication fails after a time

Hi - I've got Dovecot version 1.0.7 running on a CentOS 5.2 machine. It's serving pop, imap and imaps and authenticating against an Active Directory machine. This all works fine at first, but after about two weeks or so, dovecot's authentication against AD starts to fail. All of dovecot's authentication attempts time out. I also have postfix on the same machine authenticating against the same AD, and it does not seem to experience this issue. If I restart dovecot, the authentication starts working again. I've gone over /var/log/maillog, but I don't see anything particularly useful. [Dovecot] SELinux and "i_stream_read() failed: Permission denied"

Not a problem ... sharing a solution (this time)! Please correct my understanding of the process, if required. "i_stream_read() failed: Permission denied" is an error message generated when a large-ish file (>128kb in my case) is attached to a message that has been passed to Dovecot's deliver program when SELinux is being enforced. In my case, these messages are first run through Spamassassin, then passed to deliver, however the SELinux policy that is being violated relates to deliver, and not to Spamassassin, even though I do NOT generate the errors WITHOUT running Spamassassin. I'm not going to guess as to why that is. The policies below resolve the issue, and now large-ish (even LARGE) attachments come through without a whimper with Postfix+Spamassassin+Dovecot. The problem is that deliver is not running with the correct SELinux policy to be able to write to the global /tmp directory (in my case, after receiving the big attachment from SA), even if that directory's permissions allow it. (Bless you, SELinux!) Small-ish file attachments do not trigger this deliver functionality. Here's a complete error message, and its subsequent errors in the course of delivering a large-ish message+attachment: =================================================== deliver(user): unlink(/tmp/dovecot.deliver.. \ 1239836047.9469.46242b1037005551) failed: Permission denied deliver(user): copy: i_stream_read() failed: Permission denied deliver(user): read(mail, uid=1) failed: Permission denied deliver(user): read(mail, uid=1) failed: Permission denied deliver(user): msgid=: save failed to INBOX: Internal error occurred. \ Refer to server log for more information. Basically, the "dovecot_deliver_t" context needs to be able to create, read, write and remove files in the /tmp directory ("tmp_t" context). Below, I am pasting my "local_postfix.te" SELinux policy file. It includes instructions for using it, and for figuring out how to do other SELinux policy adjustments on your own. This is my COMPLETE Postfix+Dovecot SELinux policy group. I also have policies for Spamassassin, if anyone wants them. If you are running Sendmail or another MTA instead of Postfix, you can build on what you find below and establish your own policies. I hope this proves useful. Hello, I am trying to migrate existing UW-IMAP installation to dovecot 1.1.14 and I am having troubles with namespaces. As you know UW-IMAP allows full system access to home directory of a user and you can set up dovecot to do that as well, but I would like to use namespaces. If I set my namespaces like this: namespace private { separator = / prefix = inbox = yes location = mbox:~/:INBOX=~/.mailbox hidden = yes list = yes } namespace private { separator = / prefix = mail/ location = mbox:~/mail prefix = mail/ hidden = yes } Everything is working fine, but I am seeing also all other files in home directory of a user, but this is annoying if you have users with public_html folder with millions of files in it. Dovecot indexing makes index.log file for every file seen in namespace, so you have several million index files for files that are not mailboxes. So I was wondering is there a way to skip certain directories in namespaces or a way to setup namespaces in a way, that you would have: - INBOX in home directory - some folders in home directory (via .subscriptions) - some folders in %h/mail/ directory - and not seeing all other files/directories in home dir Thanks in advance, regards, Jernej

[Dovecot] Multiple instances and/or separate certificates per email address

Hi, We have a mail server with multiple instances of Postfix each listening on a different IP address to create a set of virtual mail servers. There are various reasons why separate instances of Postfix seems to work best to achieve this goal, but I wont divert into that discussion here. I would like so match this with Dovecot. The listening side isn't a problem as Dovecot can listen on multiple explicit IP addresses. However, we would prefer a separate SSL certificate for each virtual mail server i.e. for each IP address. Would it be better to have multiple instances of Dovecot on the server (not sure what the issues might be with this) or would it be better/easier to be able to specify separate SSL certificates for each listen address, since there isn't any other reason I can see to have multiple instances. Any thought? Is there a way to do this now or would this be a new feature request? I was already going to report a bug with rc2 where the server crashed when a client tried to access a Maildir folder with wrong permissions. Recently just migrated from Sendmail 8.14.3 to Postfix 2.5.6 and switched from Cyrus-sasl 2.1.22 to Dovecot 1.1.13 sasl, all are compiled from source and I have used Dovecot for a long time, since alpha versions. Everything worked well for Outlook Express, Outlook and Thunderbird clients, but Microsoft Entourage 2004 or 2008 clients smtps fails - "Authentication failed because Entourage doesn't support any of the available authentication methods." Similar case like - http://archives.neohapsis.com/archives/postfix/2008-09/thread.html#145 I tried everything, the config is like described in Postfix and Dovecot sites - http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/PostfixAndDovecotSASL I also tried in main.cf smtpd_sasl_security_options =forward_secrecy like described in http://www.postfix.org/postconf.5.html#smtpd_sasl_security_options But none helped. So I switched back to Cyrus-sasl and Entourage works well like before with sendmail. Hi, Shared folders is ok now. and when I create a public folder follow the doc http://wiki.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes/Public, I can not get the boxes listed. namespace: type: public separator: / prefix: public/ location: maildir:/home/data/public:INDEX=~/Maildir/public list: children # ls /home/data/public/ -a . .. dovecot-shared .test1 .test2 .test3 And then, I checked the shared folders created by 'setacl' command, and add a dovecot-acl-list file in the root public folder, ok, I got it. # cat /home/data/public/dovecot-acl-list 1239108915 test1 so, 'dovecot-acl-list' should be created manually or any other methods? Hi, I am looking for some help on dict configration. I'm trying to config shared and public mailbox, and use sql as acl backend. Hello, I would like to know how to use Public mailboxes in my Dovecot environment (dovecot 1.2.beta4) Currently my dovecot server is only used for mailbox user. The Postfix master.cf is configured with the following line: "dovecot unix - n n - - pipe flags=DRhu user=vmail:vmail argv=/usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver -d ${user}" Both dovecot and postfix use LDAP requests for authentication and users data retrieving. However I don't use userdb database to get the users home directory but an userdb static instruction : "args = uid=vmail gid=vmail home=/data/maildir/%1Lu/%Lu allow_all_users=yes" I have configured my dovecot.conf to create a namespace Public, and it works fine: an user who have read/write access(ACL) to a public mailbox can subscribe to it and read/copy mails. My problem is to deliver mails in this public mailbox. I don't know how to do it. Therefore, first question: is it possible to deliver mails to a public mailbox through the LDA/Postfix ? If yes, please could you tell me how to configure LDA/Postfix and Dovecot in order to accept and deliver mails to users mailboxes and to public mailboxes ? I assume that the main modifications should be done in the master.cf of Postfix. Could you please specify and clarify what modifications are required ? All we did was /mail/user1 /mail/user2 /mail/shared ln -s /mail/shared /mail/user1/shared ln -s /mail/shared /mail/user2/shared Perms are fine and people where dropping emails in here fine. We added a third one and the user also right clicked in their IMAP client and added a subfolder. It was around that time they where gone. Could any of these actions cause that? PS it is not a mbox layout. Thanks!
