I'm trying to figure out a way, or if it is even possible, to use mailing list software (majordomo2) on a Postfix + Dovecot + virtual mailboxes system. And where I should be looking. The examples on the Postfix site don't seem to address a purely virtual mailboxes system and I haven't found anything about doing it with deliver. I think I'm at the wrong tree (Dovecot deliver) and should be pestering the Postfix list. FTR, I host some sites for not-for-profits and they have asked about setting up lists. So far I've dodged the question but would like to attempt it now. Thanks, Rod --

I thought about saying this in v1.2.beta1 release annoouncement, but looks like it'll take a few more days. So I've moved to Blacksburg, Virginia and I'm now working for Mailtrust the rest of this year. Here's some talk about it: http://mailtrust.com/blog (A bit stupid looking picture, but then again all my pictures seem to be that way so I didn't bother getting a new one taken.) And if it's not clear from that blog: Pretty much everything I do here will be Dovecot improvements that will be released as open source. Mailtrust has actually been paying for Dovecot features for about 3 years now.

[Dovecot] redelivered mail results in mail-forwarding-loop

I try to redeliver mail for the following reason: Once in a while a user receives a mail which isn't correctly recognised as SPAM/HAM. He'll move the mail into a specific folder (say: retrain-as-spam/retrain-as-ham) and a script will retrain the mail. What I'd like to do is to redeliver the mail in order for correct (re)delivery (e.g. sieve scripts). Using sendmail to redeliver the mail I'm able to re-run the spam tests which will add it's SPAM headers and dovecot/sieve will be able to correctly file the message. I tried to just resend the mail: # /usr/sbin/sendmail -f foo@bar -v -oi foo@bar < mail but this results in a Diagnostic-Code: X-Postfix; delivery via dovecot: mail forwarding loop for foo@bar The problem is that the mail already has a "Delivered-To: foo@bar" line. The above is working when the "Delivered-To" line is being removed, and my question is if this can't be done automatically?

[Dovecot] Dovecot / Exim with Multiple Domiains

I'm using a very old scheme for doing multiple domains using an old Linuxconf based setup. Each domain has it's own passwd/shadow file. It works but I need something new and modern and has a web interface and perhaps a mysql backend or something else good. So - what are people using out there for managing email users and domains? [Dovecot] Authentication woes.

I'm still searching but hoping someone can offer a clue-stick. Long story short! I had a server crash suddenly and all I can get at are the files. Built a new host and copied the data and config files over, correcting ownership and permissions (hopefully) as I went. But now I can't get logged in. Hi, i have compiled & packaged Dovecot 1.1.11 on Solaris 8 x86 with Sun Studio 11 and installed the result on Solaris 10 x86 zone. When i now configure auth mechanisms other than "login" or "plain" while only providing pam as the passdb, Dovecot segfaults on startup. I know that my configuration is wrong here, but i guess this still qualifies as a bug. Hi Timo, Hi *, I just recognized that the new imap-acl plugin in dovecot 1.2 does not know the obsolete rights 'd' and 'c' when setting. According to RFC 4314 section 2.1.1.: If a client includes the "d" right in a rights list, then it MUST be treated as if the client had included every member of the "delete" right. and If a client includes the "c" right in a rights list, then it MUST be treated as if the client had included every member of the "create" right. Unfortunatly there are actually clients which depend on this behavior. [Dovecot] Rebuild folder listing?

I don't know what to call what I'm trying to do so I'll explain the situation. I had a total complete crash of the Linux-Vserver system that was hosting a Postfix+Dovecot guest with a three domains and 1-5 accounts per domain. Lots of mail though. Before it completely melted down I as able to get to the data (messages) and save them and the configuration files for both Dovecot and Postfix. I now have a replacement system up and running and have copied the directories onto it. I can log in to the accounts but I don't see the folders (I use Thunderbird as a MUA). Attempts to "subscribe" and "refresh" the list give me no results. No list of folders. What should I do? I'm thinking I could delete the dovecot files: dovecot.index, dovecot.index.cache, dovecot.index.log, dovecot-uidlist, subscriptions, and while I'm at it possibly dovecot-keywords. Then access the account(s) and Dovecot will rebuild them with the true/correct information. Am I heading anywhere near the right direction? TIA, Rod --

I understand what the log message means. I currently have dovecot logging flipped up about as high as I can have it set in about every way that I can. Hello, About the INBOX location when using maildir, in the wiki, http://wiki.dovecot.org/MailboxFormat/Maildir, I can read: " Directory Structure ~/Maildir/new, ~/Maildir/cur and ~/Maildir/tmp directories contain the messages for INBOX. The tmp directory is used during delivery, new messages arrive in new and read shall be moved to cur by the clients. [Dovecot] Best Imap Transfer Tool?

So I'm looking to do a migration of my IMAP mailboxes, and I'm looking for the best tool to use. I used to use the uw-mailutil tool, a while ago, but that was a bit coarse of a tool. More recently I've used imapsync, but that was giving me some errors. I've sort of tracked those down; but I was wondering if anyone else had any other recommendations...? Thanks.

I've currently got dovecot running on a Fedora server and I want to move all my mail to my new server running ubuntu. Both use mbox and I have IMAP working in both. Can I just copy the ~user/mail directory and /var/mail/user file and replace them in the new server? [Dovecot] Info regarding conversion of mbox to maildir

When I finally decide to convert to maildir, will I have to set up namespaces during the conversion, or will dovecot figure out where everything is by itself? Should I set up deliver to go to maildir/ globally, or per user? I have considered using the convert plugin, if there are not a lot of negatives. -- MailScanner is like deodorant... You hope everybody uses it, and you notice quickly if they don't!!!!

Hello Timo, In my trials to setup a shared namespace with dovecot-1.1.8/LDAP passdb/userdb (prefetch)/Maildir, I found out that : 1) ACL are mandatory (at least if the acl plugin is triggered in dovecot.conf) Am I correct ? I'm still not sure if we can do without ACL at all (only with unix permissions and system_user userdb extra field). 2) the system_user userdb extra field is supposed to be ...the logname of the user the secondary groups of whom we want to check ! i.e. if user foobar belongs to secondary groups foogid, zgid, wgid and doveshared uid=xxx(foobar) gid=yyy(foogid) groups=zzz(zgid),www(wgid),vvv(doveshared) and we dovecot to take them into account, we have to make the usedb return the system_user extra field with the value foobar. Seems obvious now and said this way, but looking at the wiki : "system_user: If this is given, the user's groups are read from /etc/group (or wherever NSS is configured to taken them from)." I thought 'system_user' was a flag (a boolean) which, when triggered made dovecot look for the secondaries group of the user (user whose name is already known). a) am I correct ? b) why isn't system_user such a boolean ? Is there a case where we'd want system_user to be different than the user dovecot runs as at the moment the check takes place ? 3) same idea with acl_groups : since this extra_field holds a list of groups for the ACL plugin, why not rely on the native unix groups of the system the user belong to ? [Dovecot] dovecot-shared file

Hello Timo, About the dovecot-shared file, the wiki says : "Unless you're using a single UID for all the users, you'll need to have a dovecot-shared file in each shared maildir. The group and the file permissions for new files inside the maildir are taken from the dovecot-shared file." but says the following too : "With Maildir dovecot-shared file controls if the \Seen flags are shared or private. If you don't have the file, they're shared." The question is "does it make sense (or is it even possible) not to have the file ?". Why would one not have the file and how would it work then ? By relying on the set-gid bit and umask ? Finally, the wiki says : "If you do have the file, the \Seen flag state is stored only in the user's index files. By making each user have their own private index files, you can make the \Seen flag private for the users." So, my undersanding is that : 1) you have the file 1.a) if INDEX points to the same place, flags are shared but are lost if indexes are lost 1.b) if INDEX points to some user dependant place, flags are private but are lost if indexes are lost 2) you don't have the file flags are shared, whatever INDEX points to and, since they're stored in filename, survive indexes lost. but does shared-mailboxes even work if we don't have that file ? maybe only if the set-gid bit and umask does what the file would have done ? [Dovecot] Shared subscription, acl-list and uidvalidity(s)

Hello, I'm running dovecot-1.1.8/Maildir/ACL plugin. I sucessfully set up a Maildir shared between users of the unix group 'doveshared' via a public namespace, unix permissions and ACL files. The location of my public namespace is /path/to/public. I tried 2 sub-setups : First setup ---------- drwxrws--- 4 root doveshared 4096 Jan 30 13:39 public -rw-r----- 1 root doveshared 18 Jan 30 13:38 public/subscriptions I first connect (in Thunderbird) to dovecot with user 'hummel', then with user 'doveimap'. The following files are created in /path/to/public/ : -rw------- 1 doveimap doveshared 40 Jan 30 14:03 dovecot-acl-list -rw------- 1 hummel doveshared 8 Jan 30 14:03 dovecot-uidvalidity -rw------- 1 hummel doveshared 0 Jan 30 14:02 dovecot-uidvalidity.4982fa7a I've got my own idea about what they're used for, but can you explain what they are supposed to be ? I guess the uidvalidity files are UIDVALIDITY, not for the mailboxes the namespace holds (since my understanding is that the uidvalidities of mailboxes are stored in the first line of dovecot-uidlist files), but for the namespace itself (in case it is destroyed and then recreated for instance). Am I right ? Why 2 files ? Second setup ------------- I follow the 'Shared subscriptions' section of the wiki : drw-r-s--- 4 root doveshared 4096 Jan 30 14:19 public -rw-r----- 1 root doveshared 18 Jan 30 13:38 public/subscriptions As expected, dovecot (and it shows in the logs), has not sufficient permissions to create the files above (dovecot-acl-list, dovecot-uidvalidity, dovecot-uidvalidity.4982fa7a). [Dovecot] help: "dovecot: pipe() failed: Too many open files"

Dear All, I'm having an intermittent problem, with dovecot slowing to a crawl. Restarting dovecot fixes the problem. Looking at the maillog, I see loads of these errors.... dovecot: pipe() failed: Too many open files dovecot: Temporary failure in creating login processes, slowing down for now dovecot: Created login processes successfully, unstalling looking at the processes, I can see ~200 imap-login's and about ~700 imap's there are 1000 email accounts on the server - half of which are in regular use. The server is Dell PE1950 running dovecot (1.0.7-2.el5) as supplied with Centos 5.2 (~Redhat AS 5.2) in 64 bit mode. I've upgraded the server from 4 to 8GB of RAM, and from a dual core 1.5Ghz xeon, to a quad core 1.5GHz xeon, and this does not seem to help. [Dovecot] NFS - inotify vs kqueue

Hi, I've seen some chatter on NFS boards about kqueue being more reliable than inotify when used in NFSv3 and NFSv2. The chatter is a bit old so I don't know if it is true anymore. Anyone have pro/con experience with dovecot on the inotify/kqueue question when using NFS storage? I realize that kqueue is probably a bit slower and causes some delay with IDLE. Also, it may not really make any difference which is why I ask the question. ---Jack

Hi all, as I told earlier, I am installing an email server with postfix/dovecot/dspam (for now that's all, though some programs may come later). For now, what works good enough is that I receive mails and spams are tagged. Dovecot version 1.1.7-r1 compiled from the gentoo depository with debug. The path of a mail is 1/ to be passed to dspam by postfix as a virtual transport with this in master.cf: dspam unix - n n - - pipe flags=DRhu user=vmail argv=/usr/bin/dspam --client --deliver=innocent,spam --user ${recipient} and this in main.cf: virtual_transport = dspam 2/ Then in dspam.conf, I have: TrustedDeliveryAgent "/usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver -d %u" UntrustedDeliveryAgent "/usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver -d %u" QuarantineAgent "/usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver -d %u -m Junk" Now dspam is tagging a lot of my spams, with [SPAM] on the subject and in the header stuffs like this: X-DSPAM-Result: Spam X-DSPAM-Processed: Thu Feb 5 23:49:02 2009 X-DSPAM-Confidence: 0.5232 X-DSPAM-Probability: 0.9869 X-DSPAM-Signature: 498b6cde61901804284693 X-DSPAM-Factors: 27, Subject*watch, 0.99000, a+loved, 0.99000, Subject*for+all, 0.99000, ... ... But I wanted spam to go in my Junk folder (using maildir, this is the directory .maildir/.Junk for my configuration. Hence the above configuration of QuarantineAgent. But it doesn't work as my emails are still deliverd to INBOX. How could I check that dovecot deliver is taking into account the option "-m Junk"? Or maybe I don't use it well? (I tried also "-m .Junk" as it it the name of the directory but it is the same) Note also that I use maildir format, so maybe this option works only with mailbox? The doc says: -m <mailbox>: Destination mailbox (default is INBOX). Many users with different clients complain a lot of "server disconnected" errors. On the server side Doveco does not report any kind of error. [Dovecot] Expire plugin does not work

Hi. I test expire plugin for my dovecot 1.1.8. But, it seems to not work. I have 3 mailboxes on my machine. I want my messages in Junk and Trash expire after 1 day. I removed all messages in them before installing expire plugin. See my dovecot.conf: expire: Trash 1 Junk 1 expire_dict: proxy::expire My dabatases in /var/lib/dovecot are used. When I launch /usr/local/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail ext /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/expire-tool --test, it says: Info: user3(a)domain.tld/Trash: stop, expire time in future: Wed Feb 4 21:00:50 2009 Why this message? I have 3 mailboxes, and the message appears only with this mailbox. The 2 others mailbox have mails into Trash and Junk folders. And the mail are older than 2 days. An ls -lcs say it. When I launch /usr/local/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail ext /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/expire-tool, no messages appears. Nothing in my dovecot logs. Nothing (and I set mail_debug). No messages are deleted. Hi Gents, (apologizes, new here...) I didn't find any hint on G**gle nor in the Dovecot archieve (maybe due to the lack of a search function :), so: I installed Doovecot, but can't get it going. As long i am just guessing around (auth? dev 0.10?? maybe SSL config?), i have no clue what happens here :(. To make things more interesting: the installation lives on an embedded device (xscale, aka arm w/4MB RAM), where are no extended debug features available (like ltrace, ldd,...), and no newer packages (if exist) available. Tried so far: * uninstall (ipkg remove) * rm'd all files listed in the package description + /var/run/dc/* * reinstall (ipkg install) * changed the config file (in many ways... but what??) The init-script does mainly "/opt/sbin/dovecot", so i tried that command on the CLI(bash) to be sure no script mangles fd's around. "echo $?" gives "0" then, but no DC process is running- log messages as above. I have no clue what to do abt that- where's the point?? Can this hopefully be done whithout installing the complete gcc toolchain and compiling a newer version from source, but by just adapting the config? 8-| Any helpful hints appreciated!, acend -- -- Psssst! [Dovecot] Dovecot performance on GFS clustered filesystem

Hello All, We are using Dovecot 1.1.3 to serve IMAP on a pair of clustered Postfix servers which share a fiber array via the GFS clustered filesystem. This all works very well for the most part, with the exception that certain operations are so inefficient on GFS that they generate significant I/O load and hurt performance. We are using the Maildir format on disk. We're also using Dovecot's deliver from Postfix to handle local delivery. As best I can determine, the worst problems occur when certain users with very large Inboxes (~10k messages) receive new mail and their client looks up information about that message. GFS doesn't seem to efficiently handle the large directories that contain folders like this. As a result, lots of I/O ops are generated and performance suffers for everyone. I am beginning to wonder if it might be more efficient to revert to the old mbox format, with one file per folder (plus whatever indices are creates.) It seems that this ought to work better with GFS which is geared toward smaller numbers of larger files. Is anyone on the list currently doing that? Alternately, any thoughts regarding tuning or other options would be appreciated. [Dovecot] The 'dbox' Format

I'd like to give the dbox format a try, but I could not find any information on how to enable it. There's information on how to set mail_location for the Maildir and mbox formats in the wiki and also in the commented configuration file, but how to set it for dbox is strangely missing. I took a guess with 'mail_location = dbox:~/dbox', but that didn't work, so it's probably not the right way. Also, the version of Dovecot that Debian installed was 1.0.15, which is kinda old. [Dovecot] Deferred emails on alias emails

Hi, I am currently making a fresh install of email server. I am having some issue with dovecot-antispam (cf. other emails), and noticed that I was having issues on aliases, which apparently where not forwarded to the actual SMTP server after passing through dspam. Still don't figure why but temporarily disable the dspam filter, which anyway is not useful in the current state of this installation. Now the email to an alias are well forwarded to the real finale server. But I still have many emails which were deferred in the last days and I cannot have them decrease. # ls -l /var/spool/postfix/defer/* | wc -l 297 If I run "postqueue -f" to flush this all, I can see the number down, but fastly comes back to 297. Reading the logs, they are passed to dovecot, which was probably the issue before I disabled dspam. It was trying to deliver a message after filtering it, but in the case of aliases, of course, it cannot because the account is not local (so it does not find the account and defers the email forever)! So it should give it back to postfix so that this one contacts the aliased server (gmail.com in the example below). Is there a way to return a per user dirsize quota from a passdb sql lookup? If so, what is the syntax? maybe "select quota as userdb_quota"? ..and in mysql table, quota column would be: "quota=dirsize:storage=10240" ? Hello I have this message repeated several times each *seconds* in /var/log/dovecot/dovecot.log the max_mail_processes is set to 8192 and I can see an average of 500 imap processes on the machine , I think there is a problem somewhere ... Debian 64 bits , IBM X3650 biproc , 7 Gb RAM , RAID5 disks , 2 ethernet Gb ports bonded. Dovecot 1.1.11 has been compiled from scratch on the machine Thanks for any info.

[Dovecot] 1.1.6: PAM passdb/userdb (mis)configuration

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious :-( Dovecot version 1.1.6, pam authentication via ldap (openldap). basicly, we use: passdb pam userdb passwd which work fine, except for Outlook/OL Express users that are asked for their password whenever they "send/receive"... We've had also "passdb shadow" that somehow "fixed" this but allowed also users with expired passwords to login :-( re-added for now, untill the correct configuration is achived). Hi, I just migrated from dovecot 1.0.rc29 to 1.1.7, from Sparc platform to Intel, it went very well. In the process I merged folders and excluded folders from being copied. User rights on folders were kept/set. I thought I'd share my migration script with you folks. If there's an interest to put it on the wiki I can do that, but I'm not sure in what page. Use it as a starter if you need to do this yourselves. [Dovecot] pop3_lock_session question

Hello, I'm preparing to convert from qpopper + UW-IMAP to dovecot. So far testing has gone very well. One problem we haven't figured out is that long-running POP sessions keep the mailbox locked, so that the MDA times out while trying to deliver. We're using "maildrop" as our MDA if that matters. We don't see this issue for dovecot IMAP sessions. During long-running IMAP sessions, incoming messages are deilvered tot he user's INBOX without delay. But with POP, the MDA times out and the messages go back to sendmail's queue for later delivery. We though this setting would address the issue: # Keep the mailbox locked for the entire POP3 session. pop3_lock_session = no But it doesn't seem to. Any ideas? [Dovecot] Starting using LaunchDaemons

I've figured this one out... Just wanted to get it into the dovecot mailing list archive so that somebody in the future might find it if they need it. Running Dovecot on Mac OS X 10.4.11 and using LaunchDaemon to start. Following a system crash, dovecot failed to restart with this in the system log... Deleting the file allowed dovecot to restart. Actually, dovecot told me what the problem was when I attempted to start it from the command line as opposed to starting it with the LaunchDaemon... Hi. I'm new to Dovecot and about to start using it in production. In the config file, I set the option, auth_debug_passwords, to yes. I do not see any failed passwords logged, however. It did cause more verbose authentication logging, but failed passwords are still hidden. [Dovecot] Dovecot on Mac - Entourage cannot fetch emails

Hi, Dovecot 1.1.3 is running on Mac OS X 10.5 latest version, with Maildir (LAYOUT=fs). I have following issues when Entourage 2008 connects it, over imap/imaps. Entourage does not cache the mails. After every restart the folder contents are fetched fresh. I have enabled the Entourage option to get entire messages. Entourage caches the gmail IMAP folders fine. Also Outlook 2007 does not have this problem while connecting to the same IMAP server. I have some big folders with a few thousands of emails. Entourage fails with Error: 4362 (Mail could not be retrieved this time) while fetching mails from these folders. Restarting and rebuilding the Entourage database did not fix this issue. Any tips to resolve these issues or to debug what is going on would be greatly appreciated. As it's been a while since I upgraded (1.1rc10, jump to 1.1.10), this might be present in earlier versions as well. Anyway, if one enables mail_chroot in global config file, dovecot will try to access /tmp there. Per-user overrides behave correctly. For example, with: mail_chroot=/home/vmail dovecot will abort with: Fatal: chdir(/home/vmail/tmp) failed with uid 65534: No such file or directory Error: imap dump-capability process returned 89 Fatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot.conf

But I know something is happening because when I try to move a spam from my inbox to the Junk folder, it fails with an error telling it could not move the email. At the opposite, when I deactivate the antispam plugin, I can move normally the emails. So what could I do to fix my issue or at least diagnose it (where would I find logs of what is happening?)? Hi I have a strange trouble with Dovecot 1.1.10 and Thnuderbird 2.0.0.19 it happens that when a user starts its thunderbird client, he is unable to see his mailbox subject ( the mailbox appears empty ) If he receive a NEW email, then ALL the mailbox contents appears. Any idea on what happen ( cache problem ? index problem ? ) Thanks

Hi Guys, I've already posted this to the postfix mailing list and they made sure the error as the title suggest was generated by dovecot and not the other way around. I have an almost perfectly working multi domain mail server running dovecot+postfix+mysql+postfixadmin behind pfsense, when we transferred office, issues arose, suddenly users using email clients like thunderbird/outlook suddenly can't send mail when outside the office and instead gets an smtp denied or worst a mail undeliverable error. The mail undeliverable error was that the postmaster user is unknown yet I've created the alias using postfixadmin. I've made repeated test and sent mail directly to the postmaster and the email was received by the intended user, I'm stumped and have no idea to fix this. Hope you can help me, TIA. Hello.... I'm using the vacation feature, but the vacation reply is sent when ever a mail is received. What I want is, that the reply should only be sent one time to each user. My understanding is, that a list of people who have received the vacation message should be stored in the file .dovecot.lda-dupes in the users folder. This file is not present in my users fould. I have tried creating the file, but this makes no difference. Any ideas? I apparently did not post enough information the first time, so I am re-posting the original email with the requested configs. I just updated to dovecot 1.1.10 from 1.1.2 and now anyone using cram-md5 can't get authenticated. I am using mysql for passwords (in plain text) and home directories. Per some googling I tried to set (in /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf): # SQL database userdb sql { # Path for SQL configuration file, see doc/dovecot-sql.conf for example args = /usr/local/etc/dovecot-sql.conf } but that didn't help. And in any case people NOT using cram-md5 can authenticate just fine, both before and after I made that change. This worked "out of the box" under 1.1.2, but is broken now. Hi List, I of present dovecot 1.1.10 use it, and test dict quota backend and mysql. However, I am troubled so that it is IMAP4, and behavior when mysql fell is different from POP3. I become the error in Copy of Mail in IMAP4, but do not become the error in DELE of the POP3. Therefore I think that contradiction happens in database and real storage when mysql fell. I want an error to do it at the time of the DELE command of the POP3 if possible, but how will be it? Hi, I am using dovecot imaps and exim, both authenticating using dovecot-sasl. To keep passwords in one place I would like to authenticate openldap users over dovecot-sasl. So looking at this page: http://www.openldap.org/doc/admin24/security.html I figure it could be done using Pass-Through authentication. For this, I need to create /usr/lib/sasl2/slapd.conf And adding a few config paremeters. This is a example mech_list: plain pwcheck_method: saslauthd saslauthd_path: /var/run/sasl2/mux I understand the mech_list parameter, but I have no Idea what to put in for the rest. Any help? Thanks! Hi Everyone, I'm new in dovecot - so first at all, thank you for amazing work. I'd flicked through dovecot code and it's very accurate. I'm trying to use dovecot with a little bit non-standard configuration: dovecot installed under /my_path/dovecot, all users has the same home directory /my_path/var/mail and have to access all mailboxes/folders located there. [Dovecot] Phone cannot receive mail suddenly

Starting at midnight Feb 1 my phone can no longer fetch mail from Dovecot. It endlessly connects and reconnects as you can see in the log below. I have restarted dovecot, the phone, deleted /home/robinmail/mail, all to no avail. I have turned on debug output but it does not tell me anymore. I can connect and see the folder using the KMail imap client. Any idea how I can proceed with this? The phone is 192.168.1.57 (LAN) or 202.91.19.194 (GPRS) and Dovecot and KMail are on 192.168.1.2. [Dovecot] Config rewrite for v1.3

Still broken, but I committed the current changes to http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-config-rewrite/ The idea is something like: - src/config/ contains a doveconf binary which can be used to dump the current configuration. It's the only binary that reads dovecot.conf directly. Currently the code is kind of ugly because I wanted it to be able to parse the existing v1.2 dovecot.conf which required some kludging around. Perhaps in v2.0 the dovecot.conf could have larger changes and these kludges could be removed. - master currently executes doveconf 3 times: for default settings, for imap settings, for pop3 settings. The result is saved into an array of KEY=value pairs in an array. Eventually they're still sent to child processes via environment. This sending via environment is again mainly for backwards compatibility with post-login scripts. Although they are useful there, so I'm not sure if it should be kept that way. Although post-login scripting doesn't really work anymore with Apple's multiple-connections-per-mail-process code, so perhaps that needs some rethinking in any case.. - deliver also currently forks and executes doveconf. I hate this. But I don't like the alternative of having a libconfig that deliver could use to read the configuration inside the binary as is done now, because then it's not as easy anymore to update the doveconf binary (or replace it entirely). But I'm thinking about making doveconf a long running process and deliver could ask configuration from it via UNIX socket if it's running and fallback to forking doveconf. The last possibility would be not to fork, but instead just have doveconf exec() deliver, so either something like "doveconf -e deliver -deliver-params" or if calling deliver directly it could exec() doveconf which would then exec() deliver back. Hmm. Perhaps this is actually better than forking? - %variable expansion is somewhat broken with imap/pop3, but works with deliver. The annoying thing about this is that %vars from doveconf should be expanded, but if userdb returns anything containing %vars they shouldn't be (because e.g. home directory could contain %). So either master should expand everything internally or it should somehow tell child processes about what to expand and what not. It can't really expand everything because it doesn't know all the settings that should be expanded. So that only leaves the possibility of telling child process what to expand. One possibility is to prefix each environment with e.g. 0 or 1 specifying if it should be expanded. This would break all existing postlogin scripts and in general would make it kind of ugly. Another possibility would be to have an environment that lists the settings that shouldn't be expanded. Perhaps that would work better, although if postlogin script changes/adds environments they'd also potentially have to modify that environment too. - Plugins will probably have to keep using something similar to getenv() to get their settings. It would be possible to have them use the nice new pre-filled settings structures, but that would require configuration changes. For example instead of quota=.. quota2=.. you'd have two quota {} blocks. Probably better to leave that change to v2.0. - I'm not entirely sure where all the setting verifications should go. Having them done by master when starting up is nice because it can give error messages immediately and write them to screen, instead of having to look them up from the log. Or when reloading configuration it can cancel it if the new configuration isn't ok. Maybe doveconf could do the checks. Maybe the verifications could go to all the different *settings.c files where they logically belong to, and then the build scripts would copy those functions to doveconf code where it could check all of them when the config is being read. The only annoying thing is that this then required doveconf to be run as root so that it can do all the access() etc. checks. But maybe that's not too bad.

[Dovecot] mbox to maildir batch conversion

Hello, I'm upgrading my mail server from UW to Dovecot and I'd like to convert from mbox to maildir. I've successfully convert myself and a few other users with the mb2md script. All is well. My question is, I have somewhere around 500 users and about 122gb of mail folders to convert (this does not include the inbox at /var/mail). mb2md needs to be run as each user to convert. Are there any programs or scripts out there that will allow me to convert everyone at the same time? I know there is a Dovecot plugin to convert mail, but we didn't want to use this option. I'm sure someone on this list was in the same situation as me, how did you handle a massive conversion? Any help or suggestions is much appreciated!

Hello all, I've configured a dovecot server in proxy mode. It seems to work well but. I've tested managesieve with squirrelmail and it's working correctly but I can't connect to cyrus sieve server : timsieved Does anybody here have configure a sieve proxy to do this ? Or is it a normal behavior and dovecot sieve proxy can't speak with cyrus sieve ? Thanks.

Moving dovecot to the nfs server directly solved all my weird problems.

I have this problem with some mailboxes (actually Maildirs) on my system. After some user's activity there is following information in dovecot logs: Jan 29 16:24:28 mailserv dovecot: IMAP(username): unlink(/var/spool/mail/imap/user/username/Maildir/cur/Sent:2,ST) failed: Is a directory User can not connect to his account neither via POP3 nor IMAP. There is one workaround I know which is: rm /var/spool/mail/imap/user/username/Maildir/dovecot.index* But after some time (some activity of user) the problem comes back. Mikie

[Dovecot] cram-md5 problem

I just updated to dovecot 1.1.10 from 1.1.2 and now anyone using cram-md5 can't get authenticated. I am using mysql for passwords (in plain text) and home directories. Per some googling I tried to set (in /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf): # SQL database userdb sql { # Path for SQL configuration file, see doc/dovecot-sql.conf for example args = /usr/local/etc/dovecot-sql.conf } but that didn't help. And in any case people NOT using cram-md5 can authenticate just fine, both before and after I made that change. This worked "out of the box" under 1.1.2, but is broken now. Any ideas appreciated. [Dovecot] Killing Dovect, an unpleasant surprise

When it came time to upgrade DC or replace the certificate, I would find the root instance of dovecot and do a kill -7 of it. Within 20-30 seconds, all the hundreds of DC related processes would go away, I would swap the executable or certificate/key and restart DC. Very clean and quick. Surprise. After switching from 1.0.15 to 1.1.8 and doing the kill, I found that all the imap-login instances had been inherited by the root (1) process and did not go away. Yikes! An Unpleasant Surprise. So instead of being down for a minute, I was out for a much more noticeable 5-7 minutes, while I QUICK did an awk of the ps list to give me the pids and then xarg killed them. My boss asked me if this was a pink slip notice. :( Is this The Way Things Will Be? Hi all, ok, after looking at all of the posts that I've found, and trying numerous settings, I am a little stumped as to how to set up the deliver program with qmail to get everything correct. Ultimately, I really don't want to do a lookup of the home dir if I don't have to. I'd rather specify the stuff in the .qmail-user file for that particular user to avoid the extra step. In looking in the wiki, it says for users without a lookup to use HOME=/path/to/user/homedir deliver -f $FROM_ENVELOPE but I can't do that in the .qmail file, which would normally look something like this : |/var/qmail/bin/preline -f /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver -f ${SENDER:-<>} I would rather not do the master authentication socket as described for obvious reasons. is there a format in the .qmail file that I can use with deliver to achieve what I want??? [Dovecot] Confused about permissions needed for shared mailbox

Hello, let me re-state, hopefully in clearer terms, what I tried to described in a previous thread : With dovecot-1.1.8/Maildir/LDAP pass/userdb (prefetch), I'm trying to set up a Maildir ".box" shared in rw between 2 users in a "Public" namespace. I can't get it to work unless I chmod 777 everything, which obiously is not what I want. 1) am I correct thinking that the system_user userdb extra_field and unix permissions should be enough to achieve that and that ACLs is only if I want to fine tunes mailbox permissions ? 2) let's say that my public namespace prefix is Public/, that the .box/ maildir is in /path/to/public/.box and my 2 users belong to the doveshared unix group. I thought it would be enough to have drwxrws--- 3 root doveshared 4096 Jan 28 14:55 public drwxrws--- 3 root doveshared 4096 Jan 28 14:55 public/.box -rwxrws--- 1 root doveshared 0 Jan 26 18:25 public/.box/dovecot-shared provided that my prefetch userdb returns system_user, as I think the following says in dovecot-ldap.conf : pass_attrs = uid=user,userPassword=password,homeDirectory=userdb_home,,,uidNumber=userdb_uid,gidNumber=userdb_gid,shadowMax=userdb_system_user and providedt that in LDAP shadowMax: 80 (whatever value). But this doesn't seem to work. By the way : Am I supposed to have a dovecot-shared file in public as well (that is not only in public/.box) ? 3) let's say I try ACLs with the same setup (anyone <all permissions> for starters) would pass_attrs = uid=user,userPassword=password,homeDirectory=userdb_home,,,uidNumber=userdb_uid,gidNumber=userdb_gid,shadowMax=userdb_system_user.title=userdb_acl_groups and title: group1,doveshared be a correct setup ? Hello, I'm trying to set up, as explained in the wiki, shared mailboxes with symlink. I'm running dovecot-1.1.8 with LDAP pass/userdb. [Dovecot] (imap) killed with signal 9 on Linux/OpenVZ VPS

I'm trying to get dovecot running on my VPS and the main imap process is receiving a SIGKILL from what I presume to be the Linux Kernel and/or OpenVZ. This happens after I login and my client(s) just sit their idling. The mailbox is empty. I haven't changed much other than installing a few packages. I've also had this exact same problem on Debian 4.0 VPS (OpenVZ) under the same machine. Turning off SSL and logging in plain old IMAP didn't change anything. Under the Debian installation I tried the latest version of dovecot (1.1.8 or so), different I/O loop methods, turning them off, on, etc. The only other reference via Google I can find to this sort of problem is: http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2007-December/027440.html But that was with the login process, whereas mine is with the imap daemon. Any help is greatly appreciated. Hello. I use dovecot 1.1.8 in a FreeBSD 6.3 Today, I want to active expire plugin. But it does not work. I made instructions described in http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Expire for a bdb database. [Dovecot] Old Thunderbird problem - need a fix

I've been having a Dovecot/Thunderbird problem for about a year now and I need a fix. When I restart dovecot everything is fine but as the day progresses thing start deteriorating. When I empty my trash folder it doesn't empty. I get an indication that email has arrived in my inbox by the unread message count but can't access it. Messages arrive by appear to be empty. Folders that should be empty still have message counts showing. With all of the above problems - restarting dovecot make them all go away. I am doing something unusual in that I use Exim to directly deliver (maildir) to the inbox and other folders. And I have processes that take email out of certain folders (spam learning). Whatever the problem is I think that when I restart Dovecot I'm forcing Thunderbird to reconnect. Perhaps the solution is to somehow force Thunderbird to have to reconnect every time rather than have a persistent connection? Looking for suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Hello all, I've set up a webmail solution based on RedHat EL 5, sendmail, spamassassin, clamAV and dovecot by following this tutorial: http://www.redhat.com/magazine/025nov06/features/email/index.html I have configured everything without any problem, I can send and receive emails, using Maildir store format. Now, what I don't know how to set up: I would like to store the emails sent by the users in a dedicated store (Like Sent Emails in many webmails).... and I've got no idea on how to do this! By googling a little, I found this thread ( http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2007-April/021447.html) where a plugin is mentionned. Has it been developped or is there another solution? I'm using dovecot 1.0.7, shipped with RHEL 5 distribution. I am really discovering all the products around the email so I'm a bit confused. Thanks a lot for your answer, Pierre

Hi there, I'm getting a lot of this message in production log: Created dotlock file's timestamp is different than current time (1232468644 vs 1232468524): /path/to/dovecot.index.log The IT guy swears the clocks are sincronized. Whe even have made a test in the machine running dovecot, inside the user's mailbox: # > foo; ls -l --time-style=full-iso foo; date -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2009-01-19 17:40:55.000850000 +0000 foo Mon Jan 19 17:40:55 UTC 2009 The timestamps seems to match. [Dovecot] No Spaces in Directory names

How can I make it so my users can not create folders with spaces in them? Or allow them to create such folders but rewrite them on the hardrive with a "_" or some other symbol. I have looked threw the wiki but couldn't find anything about folder name restrictions or folder name rewriting (rewrite the space to a "_"). Im having problems with some of the expire and compress scripts when it hits these types of folders. [Dovecot] Dovecot discards mail over quota

I'm new to Dovecot, using 1.1.8 and I just wanted to verify that what I am observing is the intended behavior. I'm using Maildir++ quota. When a message is delivered to a mailbox that cannot accept the message because it would place them over the quota limit, deliver states to the MTA that the messsage was delivered successfully (example using postfix): Jan 17 12:05:31 msa postfix/pipe[13983]: 088C5B9D47: to=<test(a)example.com>, relay=dovecot, delay=0.72, delays=0.34/0.02/0/0.36, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (delivered via dovecot service) But in actuality the mail is discarded (dropped). Then a bounce is created stating the mail was rejected: Your message to <test(a)example.com> was automatically rejected: Quota exceeded (mailbox for user is full). Question: is it possible (without changing code) to alter this to where deliver would instead tempfail or something. Somehow it seems wrong to me to tell the MTA that everything is good, and then silently discard messages - regardless of the fact dovecot creates a bounce. Dear team, I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'd like to know the behavior of dovecot in a particular stuation. My questions are as follows. In /etc/dovecot-ldap.conf, 'hosts=' field is the one which can be used to specify availabled ldap server to access from the clients to authorize. And also sevral ldap servers can be specified in 'hosts =' field as shown like below. hosts = ldap-server1.example.com ldap-server2.example.com ※both server have the same configuration and available to replication ldap-server1(master) to ldap-server2(slave). If this is right, how does dovecot know which ldap server is currently used? and if the master dies, how does dovecot know and switch to slave one?
