[Dovecot] Testing POP3 with telnet - password always wrong
by Timothy Legg 06 May '09

06 May '09

Hello, I just installed the postfix and dovecot packages according to the document, http://www.debianadmin.com/debian-mail-server-setup-with-postfix-dovecot-sa… And it has been quite helpful. It looks like Dovecot works because I can communicate with it on port 110. I can't help but feel I am doing something stupid though... The web page listed above told me to test the POP3 server using Outlook Express, and well, I am just not going to do that. Not when I can do it by hand... legg@debian:~$ telnet 192.168.10.171 110 Trying 192.168.10.171... Connected to 192.168.10.171. Escape character is '^]'. +OK Dovecot ready. USER test(a)192.168.10.171 +OK PASS password1 -ERR Authentication failed. But why do I always get the password wrong? I twice set the password for the test user and also restarted Dovecot, but the password is always wrong. Note that disable_plaintext_auth=no. I'm sure there must be something stupid I have overlooked. Any suggestions? Thank you very much!!!! Tim Legg Here is some additional data that I am volunteering... # dovecot -n # 1.0.15: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf log_timestamp: %Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S protocols: imap imaps pop3 pop3s disable_plaintext_auth: no login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login login_executable(default): /usr/lib/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(imap): /usr/lib/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(pop3): /usr/lib/dovecot/pop3-login mail_privileged_group: mail mail_executable(default): /usr/lib/dovecot/imap mail_executable(imap): /usr/lib/dovecot/imap mail_executable(pop3): /usr/lib/dovecot/pop3 mail_plugin_dir(default): /usr/lib/dovecot/modules/imap mail_plugin_dir(imap): /usr/lib/dovecot/modules/imap mail_plugin_dir(pop3): /usr/lib/dovecot/modules/pop3 pop3_uidl_format(default): pop3_uidl_format(imap): pop3_uidl_format(pop3): %08Xu%08Xv auth default: passdb: driver: pam userdb: driver: passwd # dovecot --version 1.0.15

[Dovecot] Unable To Send Mail
by Carlos Williams 05 May '09

05 May '09

I just installed CentOS 5 + Postfix + Dovecot. Now When I send mail via telnet from one user to another via Postfix (MTA), I have no problem. The recipient gets the message perfectly. Now this tells me that Postfix is working fine (I assume) but then I configured Dovecot to use IMAP4 and then configured my Thunderbird client. Now all the messages I previously sent using Telnet showed up in Thunderbird Inbox but then when I attempt to send a message via Thunderbird, the message appears to send fine however the recipient never gets it and I get no delivery failrures back of any kind. I check the Postfix (MTA) mail queue and it shows empty. What is causing this anyone? Does anyone know why this is not working? Here is my postconf -n for Postfix (MTA) [root@nat home]# postconf -n alias_database = hash:/etc/aliases alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases command_directory = /usr/sbin config_directory = /etc/postfix daemon_directory = /usr/libexec/postfix debug_peer_level = 2 home_mailbox = mail/ html_directory = no inet_interfaces = all mail_owner = postfix mailq_path = /usr/bin/mailq.postfix manpage_directory = /usr/share/man mydestination = $myhostname, localhost.$mydomain, localhost, $mydomain mydomain = wtf.com myhostname = nat.wtf.com myorigin = $mydomain newaliases_path = /usr/bin/newaliases.postfix queue_directory = /var/spool/postfix readme_directory = /usr/share/doc/postfix-2.3.3/README_FILES sample_directory = /usr/share/doc/postfix-2.3.3/samples sendmail_path = /usr/sbin/sendmail.postfix setgid_group = postdrop smtpd_banner = $myhostname ESMTP $mail_name unknown_local_recipient_reject_code = 550 ================================================================ Here is what is 'UNCOMMENTED' in my /etc/dovecot.conf protocols = imap imaps mail_location = maildir:~/mail protocol imap { imap_client_workarounds = delay-newmail outlook-idle netscape-eoh } login_process_size = 64 protocol pop3 { protocol lda { protocol lda { postmaster_address = carlos(a)wtf.com } auth default { mechanisms = plain passdb pam { } userdb passwd { } user = root } dict { } plugin { } Anyone know what is causing this problem above? Sending internal email works fine via Telnet however when I try using my mail client / imap4, nothing happens.

[Dovecot] Disabling users whilst still allowing logins with a 'master password'
by Dominic Hargreaves 05 May '09

05 May '09

Hi, I'm having trouble coming up with an authentication configuration that does what we want with dovecot, and thought it would be worth passing it by the list in case anyone can spot an easy fix, or confirm my suspicions that code changes are required. You should probably be aware that this is to support a migration away from Dovecot to a certain Microsoft-provided mail platform, so if this makes you feel uncomfortable, you may choose not to respond ;) We have the following configuration: - the passdb in use is pam (for pam_krb5) - the userdb in use is passwd (for nss_ldap) - GSSAPI is also supported - We support both IMAP and POP - Dovecot 1.0.9 - users have their own uid/gid and the following requirement, in order to support the migration process: - Access to mailstore should be allowed by means of a master password or user (ideally configurable, so we have a fine degree of control over which users are exposed to the migration process at a given time) - Migration process accesses mailstore via IMAP - During migration, users should not be allowed to log in with their Kerberos password, nor with GSSAPI We've achieved the first requirement with master passwords roughly as described at the bottom of http://wiki.dovecot.org/Authentication/MasterUsers by configuring another passdb with the master password hash in place for the users we want to be enabled to migrate. Our standard auth config looks like: auth default { gssapi_hostname = imap210.herald.ox.ac.uk mechanisms = plain login gssapi passdb pam { } userdb passwd { args = blocking=yes } socket listen { master { path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-master } } } and my first try at satisfying my requirements was: auth default { gssapi_hostname = imap-dev.herald.ox.ac.uk mechanisms = plain login gssapi passdb sql { args = /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql-master.conf } passdb sql { args = /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql-deny.conf deny = yes } passdb pam { } userdb passwd { args = blocking=yes } socket listen { master { path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-master } } } where /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql-master.conf describes a query representing those users accessible by the master password (and a hash of the master password) and /etc/dovecot/dovecot-deny.conf describes a query representing those users who should not be allowed to log in with their normal password (or GSSAPI). This almost works, but unfortunately (as documented) the GSSAPI mechanism does not check any passdbs, so does not get checked against the deny passdb. Normally to disable logins for a user we chmod their mail store to 0 so they can't access it, which has the same effect, but this obviously also prevents the master password from being able to access it. It would seem to be generally useful to be able to check GSSAPI logins against a deny passdb, but is this a valid code change? Alternatively, could the *userdbs* could be extended to cope with the idea of a deny form, since the GSSAPI login process already uses them (although it would have to return USERDB_RESULT_USER_UNKNOWN). Alternatively, does anyone have any other ideas about how I could achieve the same effect? Thanks for listening. Hello Rick, and thanks for replying First of all, the attached script had an error (I attached the wrong one :-\, the "export" line reads: export PATH="/usr/bin:/bin" 2009/4/30 <dovecot(a)dovecot.org>: > > It's a dumb question, but you are running the script via cron or manually > right? (dovecot doesn't execute it in it's own). >From the documentation, I'd expect it does. In http://wiki.dovecot.org/Quota/1.1 I read: >>>You can configure Dovecot to run an external command when user's quota exceeds a specified limit. so I expect that it will run the script. Am I wrong? Send mail body with wrong Content-Type. If put this in maildir indexing raise 500 error. If fix Content-Type to "application/octet-stream" all OK. Because TEXT/*; content dovecot try to index and solr raise 500, on each search. Yes. Now i have two new issue: 1. "Content-Type:" header in mail wrong - so it's TEXT/mspowerpoint for example, but it's binary *.ppt file. 2. many html from repository change-set(many commit's to html) in text/plain mail In both cases we have "Error 500" from solr (HTMLStripReader class) (in solr log: "Marked inlalid"). And in both cases we can not detect this in dovecot code (or it's hard to do). So for now i need some method to ignore "bad" messages. Because we can not catch all variants, but indexing die on first error like this. Powered by the 6zap. [Dovecot] Maildir bugs
by Timo Sirainen 05 May '09

05 May '09

I just found out that when using deliver or saving mails with IMAP APPEND command there was all kinds of race condition bugs that could cause e.g.: dovecot-uidlist: Duplicate file entry at line 18: 1241457213.M690227P32531.host,W=3359:2,T (uid 170019 -> 170020) And who knows what else. If you've run into those problems, these patches should help: http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.1/rev/6bbe27c32cb8 http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.1/rev/003bebac2c76 http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.1/rev/96c8632775df They are pretty large though, hopefully won't break anything. But at least my stress tests can no longer break it. I'll probably release v1.1.15 RC in a few days so at least some people can try to break it before the final v1.1.15 :)

[Dovecot] questions about compiling Sieve plugin
by MercuryShadow 04 May '09

04 May '09

I'm using the info on the wiki to try to compile the sieve plugin for dovecot on a server running Debian Etch, but I'm getting nowhere because I'm stuck trying to find the directory to use in the "--with-dovecot=" argument when running the configure script. The wiki says: Compilation is identical among the CMUSieve and the new Sieve plugin. Use --with-dovecot=<path> to point to dovecot-config file's directory. There are two possibilities where this could exist: 1. If you configured Dovecot with --enable-header-install, you'll have dovecot-config installed in $prefix/lib/dovecot/ directory. 2. Compiled Dovecot sources' root directory. The problem is that there is no such file called "dovecot-config" on the server, and dovecot was installed from the Debian repositories, not compiled. There is no /usr/lib/dovecot or /usr/local/lib/dovecot. I figured that, as is the case with many Debian packages, the libraries needed to compile would be included in a "dovecot-dev" package, but I checked and there is no such package in the Debian repos. Does anyone know what I need to do in order to get this plugin compiled? -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/questions-about-compiling-Sieve-plugin-tp23285989p232… Sent from the Dovecot mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

[Dovecot] Problem with BODYSTRUCTURE (wrong charset)

Hi, I've changed a program that fetches mail via IMAP from an Exchange Server to use our Dovecot machine. OK. Concentrating problem in one question. How to ignore "bad" message and index next one in indexing procedure (fts plugin) ?. Now, one "error 500" from solr and dovecot (# 1.1.11: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf # OS: Linux 2.6.21.7-2.fc8xen i686 Ubuntu 8.04.2 ext3 ) stop and each next search query repeat the story. [Dovecot] login_max_processes_count and logs

Hello, Our server reach today the login_max_processes_count. Dovecot works well and don't accept any new connection. But it doesn't log anything about this problem : we are blind why the connection is refused for the clients. Could you add a log when the connection limit is reached or (maybe better) a log with the occupation for the beginning of each connection ? Thanks Dom Dovecot version 1.0.15 on Debian AMD64

[Dovecot] Strange virtual users issues

Hi i'm using dovecot with virtual users from a postgresql database backend on a Debian Lenny system. I'm using qmail as MTA. Mostly everything seems to work ok , except the fact that the mail delivered never reaches virtual user's INBOX. Here's the dovecot config: dovecot -n # 1.0.15: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf base_dir: /var/run/dovecot/ log_path: /var/log/dovecot.log log_timestamp: %Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S protocols: imap ssl_disable: yes login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login login_executable: /usr/lib/dovecot/imap-login login_greeting: Server ready to process requests. login_process_per_connection: no max_mail_processes: 512 verbose_proctitle: yes first_valid_gid: 61 last_valid_gid: 2003 mail_privileged_group: mail mail_location: maildir:~/Maildir mail_debug: yes mail_plugins: quota autocreate imap_client_workarounds: outlook-idle delay-newmail auth default: mechanisms: plain login digest-md5 passdb: driver: pam passdb: driver: passwd passdb: driver: sql args: /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf userdb: driver: passwd userdb: driver: sql args: /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf userdb: driver: prefetch socket: type: listen client: path: /var/run/dovecot/auth-client mode: 432 master: path: /var/run/dovecot/auth-master mode: 384 user: root group: mail plugin: quota: maildir acl: vfile:/etc/dovecot-acls trash: /etc/dovecot-trash.conf lazy_expunge: .EXPUNGED/ .DELETED/ .DELETED/.EXPUNGED/ autocreate: Trash autocreate2: Spam The setup is as follows: I've created a system user named vmail in /home with a group also called vmail. The virtual users are created in /home/vmail/username when i configure an account from thunderbird. If I send an message from a virtual user to an system user everythings is ok. Great. Thank you so much for responding. It hangs at Tying 127.0.0.1 The funny part is that one day it works fine and the next day it just hangs. And its not that the service is completely unresponsive. If 200 users try to connect, 10 get through and are able to download. However which 10 get through depends on luck! Its been going on for the past one week and really driving me crazy. I have changed everthing including the server, but the problem persists. How do I get a clue where the problem is? Hi. We user ftp-solr plugin and have problem with solr-1.3+ with HTMLStripWhitespaceTokenizerFactory (Solr schema in attachments). In some maildir's present messages with wrong "Content-Type: " fields in attachments. For example: " Content-Type: TEXT/mspowerpoint; name="Zapatec_6zap_netvibes_1.ppt" " Indexing for this messages is stop with "fts_solr: Indexing failed: 500 Internal Server Error". In solr log is: " SEVERE: java.io.IOException: Mark invalid at java.io.BufferedReader.reset(BufferedReader.java:485) " (mail list with discussion: http://markmail.org/message/2fnfiwygvehjngyr#query:SEVERE%3A%20java.io.IOEx…) Look's like dovecot try to index attachments like this. Also for some messages we have same error. Dovecot stop indexing of box and each search we have lag and CPU load on server. So we need to make dovecot more "stable" to this error. For first time , will be good, just ignore problematic messages with error from solr. Let's discuss this issue, because this is general problem. We ready to explore code where needed , etc. Regards, Nikolai Powered by the 6zap. Sign up at http://www.6zap.com for an account that provides advanced e-mail, calendar and contacts capabilities.

The only thing I don't understand and can't find/understand in the documentation is how to tell the LDA where to put my e-mails. I have mails to several addresses mixed up in several POP3 boxes and need to sort them out and deliver them based on the target address. e.g. michael@domain1 and michael@domain2 go to my box etc. I can't see where I identify the addresses and allocate the appropriate storage area. [Dovecot] Installed include files
by Timo Sirainen 01 May '09

01 May '09

Currently when using configure --enable-header-install and doing make install the include files get installed to their own subdirectories, like: /usr/local/include/dovecot/src/lib/ /usr/local/include/dovecot/src/lib-mail/ ..etc.. But using that is kind of annoying, because you have to give -I paths to all of them with their full directories. The worst thing about that is that it requires having some kind of a --with-dovecot=path configure parameter. It would be nice if you could simply do: CPPFLAGS=-I/usr/local/include/dovecot ./configure Just like for any other include option. But that's not really possible. One possible way to fix it would be to just install all the .h files to a single directory, /usr/local/include/dovecot/ and make sure there aren't any conflicts (there currently are a few). But whis would make it more difficult to find out what files are related. Another possibility would be to put the subdir paths to all #include lines. Such as #include "lib-mail/mail-types.h" instead of just #include "mail-types.h". This seems kind of annoying to use, but would it be clearer? I'm not really sure. Anyone have any thoughts?

[Dovecot] Case sensitive oddity when mail delivered.
by dovecot＠corwyn.net 01 May '09

01 May '09

Currently running Postfix/Dovecot1.1.8 with mysql storing the user data and delivering to folders as determined by dovecot using dovecot's "deliver" as defined in postfix's master.cf Mail location is determined by mail_location = maildir:/var/spool/mail/%d/%n/Maildir If I have an account user1(a)example.com it works just fine. However, when mail is sent to USER1(a)EXAMPLE.COM it also delivers, but ends up creating a new file structure so I end up with /var/spool/mail/example.com/user1 (with lower case mail in it) and /var/spool/mail/EXAMPLE.COM/USER1 (with uppercase mail in it) which is decidedly not good. Looks to me like wherever %d and %n are pulled from is pulled out of the email, but not lower-cased. Any ideas where I would look to change this value before the email is delivered to the mailbox? Thx. rick Rick Steeves http://www.sinister.net "Life is like a sausage: The more you pack into it, the longer it gets"

Hi, list! I use Dovecot 1.1.14 at work. It is configured to manage IMAP and IMAPs. Exim is the MTA of the Network. Of course, I installed SpamAssassin and ClamAV to check all incoming E-Mails. An, of course, some E-Mail marked as Spam are Ham and some E-Mail marked as Ham are Spam... To teach SpamAssassin I create for every user two folder: "DochSpam" (for Spam E-Mails not marked) and "FalscheSpam" (for Ham E-Mails marked as Spam). Every hour a cronjob search for E-Mails in these folders and call sa-learn to teach SpamAssassin. All run perfectly, but I'd like to modify this method and call automatically the script when the user move an E-Mail to DochSpam or FalscheSpam. I searched in Google, but I cannot found any useful link... How can I trigger an action (script calling) based on event (E-Mail will be moved to a folder) in Dovecot? Thanks for your help! > No, we don't. We use dovecot as POP/IMAP server, and let Postfix do the rest. How does Postfix deliver the mails? mailbox_command should be set to use deliver, not maildrop/procmail. > I see, but it seems like it is *another* solution rather than a > constraint. I just tested the quota-warning, with the dovecot-deliver-example. Exactly the same time as the mail exceeding the quota-percentage is delievered in the account, the quota-warning-message is generated and also delivered. > Anyway, we are neither sending an email nor using deliver. What we are > trying to do is to generate a message file that is injected into the > mailbox. But the script that should do that is never run by dovecot > :-( Try the injection using deliver, and use the "alternative script" from the wiki-page as quota_warning. I just tested it, works great. Also: when using dovecot-deliver, the maildir-indizes are being generated better and faster than with alternative MDAs. Best regards, Anton

[Dovecot] Unexplainable problem with POP3 quotas
by Marco Marongiu 30 Apr '09

30 Apr '09

Greetings * We are having a problem with POP3 quota warnings, and despite we dig into the documentation, mailing list archives, google... we didn't spot any light We are running a self-compiled dovecot 1.1.7. The user base is in a Postgres database. We'd like a quota warning message to be injected into the maildir at 80% and 95% of occupation reached. >From the logs, it looks like dovecot is correctly reading the quotas from the DB. Nevertheless, the warning message is never delivered. We tried many different configurations (e.g.: from using bytes instead of storage to change the quota configuration alltogether, I think we tried every single sensible, applicable solution that we could spot during our searches in the net). Currently, we have the following non-working one: root@mgo2-popimap-v01:/usr/local/dovecot/etc# ../sbin/dovecot -n # 1.1.7: /usr/local/dovecot_1.1.7/etc/dovecot.conf Warning: fd limit 1024 is lower than what Dovecot can use under full load (more than 16384). [Dovecot] Quota: ldap dict
by Marcio Merlone 29 Apr '09

29 Apr '09

Hi, I have set a dovecot-1:1.0.10-1ubuntu5.1 server on top of a Ubuntu 8.04 LTS box and everything goes fine. All my users are on a LDAP database integrated via nss_ldap, so from the dovecot point of view they are all local system users. Now I want to set maildir quota for everybody, and was wondering if I could store quota limits per user on LDAP. As I read on http://wiki.dovecot.org/Quota/Dict, there seem to be no way to do that, am I right? It is ok for me to manage the current usage on Maildir++, but would like to retrieve the quota information from the LDAP server. What do you guys recommend? Thanks in advance for any hint or rtfm. Best regards. -- Marcio Merlone

[Dovecot] Dovecot v2.0 hg tree
by Timo Sirainen 29 Apr '09

29 Apr '09

http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-2.0/ I just did the initial commit for master process rewrite, which marks the beginning of Dovecot v2.0. Several things are still missing/broken, but at least I was just able to successfully log in using imap :) I left v1.3 hg tree there for now, but once v2.0 tree is fully usable I'll just delete the v1.3 tree. Note the new dovecot-master-example.conf, which you'll need to !include to get the services running. Some settings have also been removed because they're now more generically set in the dovecot-master.conf. I'm thinking that perhaps the config process could still be run in compatibility mode where it's able to use an existing v1.x dovecot.conf and translate the old settings to new settings.

[Dovecot] Slow connections with POP3 service
by V S Rao 29 Apr '09

29 Apr '09

Hi All, I am facing a very strange issue with the pop3 server for the past one week. I run my mail service using sendmail & use UW-IMAP for POP3 & IMAP service. We have around 5000 users. Suddenly for the past one week I am facing very slow connections for POP3 alone on that server. Other services such as SMTP, IMAP, telnet, ssh etc work fine. Assuming that UW-IMAP may have an issue, I download the latest dovecot, compiled it and installed it. This also gives the same issue. I do not any firewall issues nor iptables is enabled. I have checked on the network to ensure that I do not have any kind of virus or DoS attacks using an IDS. I am unable to see any 'Strange' messages in /var/log/messages or maillog. What is strange is that it works one day without any issues and the next day the problem persists. Even a telnet to localhost on port 110 is very very slow. Can someone help with any ideas on how to troubleshoot? This is our production box. Thanks V S Rao

[Dovecot] Quota/Dict Postgres Trigger
by Warren Volz 29 Apr '09

29 Apr '09

I posted the trigger for v1.1 versions of Dovecot on the Wiki (http://wiki.dovecot.org/Quota/Dict ) and while I understand the comment posted about two process inserting at the same time, I'm not sure I understand how this is fixed in v1.2 other than via the revised trigger in the Wiki. Does someone have a known working trigger that will handle a double insert correctly? Also, out of curiosity why wasn't the code for dict written to do an update first and then an insert if this failed? That would eliminate the need for this trigger. Thanks. -Warren

[Dovecot] Mail statistics
by Timo Sirainen 29 Apr '09

29 Apr '09

I just committed a mail statistics gathering patch to v1.2: http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.2/rev/fdaf0bda70d5 It keeps track of: struct mail_private { .. /* open(), stat(), .. */ unsigned long stats_dentry_lookup_count; /* fstat() mostly */ unsigned long stats_attr_lookup_count; /* number of files we've opened and read */ unsigned long stats_files_read_count; /* number of bytes we've had to read from files */ unsigned long long stats_files_read_bytes; /* number of cache lookup hits */ unsigned long stats_cache_hit_count; So it's possible to write a plugin that does whatever with those values. You can get them per-command or even per-single-mail-access. Any thoughts on if those are good variables? Like would it be useful to split dentry lookups to opens and stats?

[Dovecot] Virtual mailbox plugin, 4 days of struggling
by Brandon Lamb 28 Apr '09

Hello, I finally got an INBOX to work, but is virtual mailbox plugin only meant to create a virtual inbox, or should I be able to have an Allmails virtual folder that is viewable in my imap client? if ~/virtual/ is my location, would I create an Allmails directory in the virtual/ or virtual/INBOX/Allmails. [Dovecot] Dovecot auth user lookup patch for maildrop
by mr.maX 26 Apr '09

26 Apr '09

Hi, recently I started using maildrop as a MDA doing lightweight filtering in a Postfix/Dovecot mail server combo. Only thing missing was the fact that maildrop couldn't perform user lookups against a user database that was already being served by Dovecot (for smtp auth in Postfix and for imap access obviously) in order to easily determinate proper mailbox location and home directory of my "virtual" users when delivering e-mails. I wanted to avoid having another authentication daemon running (Courier Authlib) that would be serving this data to maildrop, so I've spent some time to write an extension for maildrop that would allow it to do user lookups directly against Dovecot in a similar way how they are done by Dovecot's LDA deliver. For everyone that are using maildrop in a similar setup that may be interested in this extension, a patch against maildrop version 2.0.4 can be downloaded from the following location: http://www.max.rs/ozone/maildrop-2.0.4-dovecotauth.patch.txt When this patch is applied, maildrop will be extended with another command line option "-t", which can be used to specify the location of Dovecot's master auth socket that will be used when performing user lookups. There's a readme file (README.dovecotauth) together with patch with a little bit more information regarding the use of this extension. I hope that some of you may find my modification to maildrop useful. -- Best Regards, Marko Njezic - mr.maX @ MAX Interactive corp. [Dovecot] Virtual mailboxes, howto, examples, help? =)
by Brandon Lamb 24 Apr '09

24 Apr '09

Using 1.2rc3 maildir format maildir /mail/example.com/j/johndoe/{cur,new,tmp} Is there more documentation and examples on how to configure virtual mailboxes, or maybe more info on what it is suppose to do? From what I could understand on the wiki, i could create a fake/virtual folder under /mail/example.com/j/johndoe/virtual/allmail/ and inside that dir create dovecot-virtual with INBOX all And then in my mail client i would see virtual/allmail and when i click that folder it shows me mail from all my normal maildir folders? Is my thinking of how to use virtual mailboxes totally off, or am I trying to use it for what it is suppose to be used for? So far i have been messing with various values = yes/no using the following namespace private { prefix = virtual/ separator = / # location = virtual:~/virtual location = virtual:~/virtual:LAYOUT=maildir++ list = yes inbox = no subscriptions = yes hidden = no } # The default namespace that is visible to IMAP clients namespace private { prefix = separator = / location = maildir:~/ list = yes inbox = yes subscriptions = yes hidden = no } I dont know if I am retarded in my lack of ability to figure this out or what

[Dovecot] bad maildir location
by denis 23 Apr '09

23 Apr '09

Hi, I use dovecot 1.0.15 on Debian Lenny. In my /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf, i use user_query = SELECT path, 33 AS uid, uid AS gid FROM mail_users WHERE alias = '%u' The result is something like this /var/alternc/mail/d/denis_collectifs.net and is the correct location (the Maildir is created by an script) But the problem is that dovecot creates (when you log in for the first time) a directory in the form of the exact address. Here for example, /var/alternc/mail/d/denis(a)collectifs.net And so all connections will be on an empty location. How is it possible to resolve this? As mail_location I have this "maildir:/var/alternc/mail/%1u/%u/Maildir" which is not really correct. Thanks Denis PS: For now, I temporarily symlinks /var/alternc/mail/d/denis(a)collectifs.net /var/alternc/mail/d/denis_collectifs.net

[Dovecot] server is not imap4 compatible
by marco ghidinelli 23 Apr '09

23 Apr '09

hello, i have a problem with my dovecot installation. sometimes, the thunderbird clients on windows machines complains about: "server is not imap4 compatible". on the server, at the same time, i found this error: Apr 20 16:21:17 harlock dovecot: imap-login: Disconnected: Shutting down: rip=192.168.0.194, lip=10.70.0.1, TLS handshake the imap server is behind a dmz which sometimes drops connections. the server ran without problem until i upgraded from 1.0.rc15 to 1.0.15. after the upgrade i was forced to enhance the proc.sys.fs.inotify.max_user_instances = 1024 because i had error messages about "Inotify instance limit for user exceeded" my question is: does the upgrade triggered a new way of communication between clients and server that exacerbates the problem of dropped connections from the DMZ server? p.s. the dovecot configuration is: $ sudo dovecot -n # 1.0.15: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf log_timestamp: %Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S protocols: imap imaps pop3 pop3s ssl_cert_file: /etc/ssl/certs/harlock_digicert_2009.pem ssl_key_file: /etc/ssl/private/harlock_digicert_2009.key login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login login_executable(default): /usr/lib/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(imap): /usr/lib/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(pop3): /usr/lib/dovecot/pop3-login login_max_processes_count: 256 mail_privileged_group: mail mail_location: maildir:/var/mail/vhosts/turboden.net/%n/ mail_executable(default): /usr/lib/dovecot/imap mail_executable(imap): /usr/lib/dovecot/imap mail_executable(pop3): /usr/lib/dovecot/pop3 mail_plugin_dir(default): /usr/lib/dovecot/modules/imap mail_plugin_dir(imap): /usr/lib/dovecot/modules/imap mail_plugin_dir(pop3): /usr/lib/dovecot/modules/pop3 imap_client_workarounds(default): tb-extra-mailbox-sep imap_client_workarounds(imap): tb-extra-mailbox-sep imap_client_workarounds(pop3): outlook-idle pop3_uidl_format(default): pop3_uidl_format(imap): pop3_uidl_format(pop3): %08Xu%08Xv auth default: mechanisms: plain login default_realm: DOMAIN.LOCAL username_format: %Ln@%Ud passdb: driver: pam userdb: driver: static args: uid=5000 gid=5000 socket: type: listen client: path: /var/spool/postfix/private/auth mode: 432 user: postfix group: postfix

[Dovecot] Mailbox is locked?
by Kyle Wheeler 23 Apr '09

23 Apr '09

Hello, I recently upgraded from Dovecot 1.1.8 to 1.1.14, and I've started to get errors I never got before. Specifically, I'm getting "Mailbox is locked, will abort in xx seconds" errors. My mail client (mutt) will just sit there in the background (presumably in IDLE) and randomly will show this error (I THINK it has something to do with delivering new messages to the folder; I use the dovecot LDA). Nothing else about my configuration has changed, just the version of dovecot. Does anyone know what could be causing these? I assume it has something to do with the index files, but... Nothing interesting shows up in the log files. How do I get rid of these error messages? Or even begin tracking them down? For what it's worth, mail is stored on the server in Maildirs, and the lock_method is fcntl, the mbox_write_locks is fcntl (I don't set mbox_read_locks). ~Kyle -- For to accuse, requires less eloquence, such is man's nature, than to excuse; and condemnation, than absolution more resembles justice. -- Hobbes, Leviathan

[Dovecot] overnight clients causing lockfiles to be converted to root-owned messages on debian lenny
by Brett Dikeman 23 Apr '09

23 Apr '09

Greetings all, After running for more than a year without issue on debian lenny while it was in the testing- we're now experiencing problems under Lenny/Stable. Dovecot now converts some sort of lockfile into messages, and they're owned by root. The result is a mess; clients can't read their mailboxes with the root-owned files, and when the file is changed to be owned by them, many mail clients don't like the zero-length message (Outlook being one major client with this "problem".) This happens to users who leave their email clients open overnight. I haven't found a cronjob that could be responsible for this. Further details- 64 bit machine, we use maildir, /var/spool/mail is on an xfs volume, and we run postfix, procmail, and spamassassin. Dovecot version is 1.0.15; the machine is fully up-to-date with Debian Stable (Lenny.) Sample log entry of the aftermath; please pardon the sanitizing (host/username): Apr 22 00:08:34 host dovecot: IMAP(user): Fixed a duplicate: 1240289413.9181_0.host:2,S.lock -> 1240373314.P6717Q0M159857.host Apr 22 00:08:34 host dovecot: IMAP(user): Fixed a duplicate: 1240356531.15928_0.host:2,S.lock -> 1240373314.P9995Q3.host Apr 22 00:08:34 host dovecot: IMAP(user): open(/var/spool/mail/user/Maildir/cur/1240373314.P6717Q0M159857.host:2,) failed: Permission denied Brett

[Dovecot] expire-tool
by Jeff Rice 23 Apr '09

23 Apr '09

Hi, I'm having some trouble getting the expire plugin to work, and I'm not sure where to turn for troubleshooting. This is on 1.2rc3. To my dovecot.conf, I've added: mail_plugins = expire under the protocol imap and lda sections. I also added: dict { expire = mysql:/etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-expire.conf } plugin { expire = Trash 30 Trash/* 30 Spam 30 expire_dict = proxy::expire auth_socket_path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-master } /etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-expire.conf contains: -- connect = host=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock dbname=email user=XXX password=XXX map { pattern = shared/expire/$user/$mailbox table = expires value_field = expire_stamp fields { username = $user mailbox = $mailbox } } -- I created the table and granted all permissions to the user. The socket is the same one used by the auth_socket process, so that should work. Dovecot restarts fine, but the table is empty. A couple questions: First, the mailboxes to expire are stored as user(a)domain/.INBOX.Trash. How should I list them in the conf file? Also, is there any way to have the system come up to date since older emails already exist in those boxes and should be deleted. Will it detect those, or only start to delete old emails that were delivered after the plugin was enabled? Second, should the table be empty if mail has been delivered & deleted since I enabled the plugin? I assumed it would start to fill. Jeff

[Dovecot] Quota for Shared Folders
by Anton Dollmaier 22 Apr '09

22 Apr '09

Good morning list, first of all: dovecot works really great, the performance is overwhelming (especially compared to courier), the configuration flexible as hell, it is good documented - I love this software. But as things get complicated, I think I need some additional help. I'm using dovecot to replace the currently used courier-mailserver in a shared hosting environment based on the control panel Confixx. Confixx uses per default filesystem-users, giving each mailuser a filesystem-quota, mails are stored in ~/Maildir/. The imap-logins are all in the form of "webxpy", being "webx" the customer (prefix 'web', and a increasing number), and "py" the number of the pop account. Because of the filesystem-quota we moved the indexes to another partition. This basic setup with dovecot works great, with auth directly against the confixx-database etc, imap_quota-plugin, quota-plugin working as expected. We now want to implement shared folders for each customer: all mailaccounts of a customer should be able to subscribe to per-customer shared folders in a specified maildir, thus I re-mapped the usernames with a new user_query (and password_query) to the format of "webxpy@webx" - being "webx" the virtual domain and "webxpy" the mailaccount, but still using "webxpy" as the imap-login (no need for customers to change the login). This also works, we even can control with ACL-vfiles the permissions of specified users, to enable or disable specific folders. The shared folders are specified as a new public namespace and the "domain" is part of the storage-path (see configuration at the end of this mail). To allow easier quota-management (no need to create a new system-user), the quota of the shared folders is maildir-based, with a mysql-quota-dictionary (later, all accounts will be migrated to a virtual-user-mailstorage, with only maildir-quota and no fs-quotas). But when things come to the shared quota, I currently don't know how to solve the wishes of the customer: The current solution for shared folders (at the customer's local site) is based on mdaemon, every shared folder (of a customer, not a single mail-account) has a quota assigned. This quota cannot be exceeded by the users, no more mails can be saved into the shared folders if used space exceeds the hard quota-value. As my tests have shown, dovecot uses a different approach to the quota-issue: users can always move their mails from local folders to the shared namespace, regardless of the shared quota. The quota itself is only checked when receiving new mails, where the combined quota (local + shared) may not be exceeded. If it is, the mail is not delivered to the mailbox. Our quota-config is this: > quota_rule: *:storage=50M:messages=1000 > quota_rule2: Trash:storage=50M:messages=100 > quota_rule3: shared*:storage=100M:messages=1000 (also being altered by user_query, but the scheme is the same) As of dovecot-wiki, this means: Users can save "50M + 50M + 100M" of mails in all specified Folders, so the storage-value for the "shared*"-folders works additionally to the "*"-storage-value. Different from this, we want the following to happen: If the customer exceeds the shared folders-quota, his mail-users may not move mails from INBOX to shared, this move-operation should fail with a reasonable error-message. If the local quota of a mail user is exceeded, new mails should be rejected/delayed, regardless of the shared quota-value (e.g., shared quota exceeded, but no local mails [new mail-account], mails should be delivered to INBOX). Sieve-filters are not a problem, we do not allow user-specific sieve-rules (managesieve is disabled). Hopefully, I could explain my issues to you. Our current dovecot-configuration is attached to this mail, any help would be gladly appreciated. If additional configuration-values/information is needed, I'll happily provide them, if possible. best regards, Anton Dollmaier > # 1.1.13: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf > # OS: Linux 2.6.26-1-686 i686 Debian 5.0.1 > log_timestamp: %Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S > protocols: imap imaps pop3s pop3 > listen: *, [::] > ssl_cert_file: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.pem > ssl_key_file: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.pem > disable_plaintext_auth: no > login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login > login_executable(default): /usr/lib/dovecot/imap-login > login_executable(imap): /usr/lib/dovecot/imap-login > login_executable(pop3): /usr/lib/dovecot/pop3-login > mail_max_userip_connections(default): 25 > mail_max_userip_connections(imap): 25 > mail_max_userip_connections(pop3): 10 > first_valid_uid: 249 > mail_access_groups: poponly > mail_privileged_group: poponly > mail_location: maildir:~/Maildir:INDEX=~/index:CONTROL=~/control > mail_debug: yes > mail_executable(default): /usr/lib/dovecot/imap > mail_executable(imap): /usr/lib/dovecot/imap > mail_executable(pop3): /usr/lib/dovecot/pop3 > mail_plugins(default): quota imap_quota acl > mail_plugins(imap): quota imap_quota acl > mail_plugins(pop3): quota acl > mail_plugin_dir(default): /usr/lib/dovecot/modules/imap > mail_plugin_dir(imap): /usr/lib/dovecot/modules/imap > mail_plugin_dir(pop3): /usr/lib/dovecot/modules/pop3 > imap_client_workarounds(default): netscape-eoh > imap_client_workarounds(imap): netscape-eoh > imap_client_workarounds(pop3): > pop3_client_workarounds(default): > pop3_client_workarounds(imap): > pop3_client_workarounds(pop3): outlook-no-nuls oe-ns-eoh > namespace: > type: private > separator: . > inbox: yes > list: yes > subscriptions: yes > namespace: > type: private > prefix: INBOX. > hidden: yes > subscriptions: yes > namespace: > type: public > separator: . > prefix: shared. > location: maildir:/var/mail/shared/%d/:INDEX=~/shared > list: yes > auth default: > verbose: yes > debug: yes > debug_passwords: yes > passdb: > driver: sql > args: /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf > userdb: > driver: sql > args: /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf > socket: > type: listen > client: > path: /var/spool/postfix/private/auth > mode: 432 > user: postfix > group: postfix > master: > path: /var/run/dovecot/auth-master > mode: 432 > user: vmail > group: vmail > plugin: > quota: dict:::proxy::quotadict > quota2: dict::%d:proxy::quota2dict > quota_rule: *:storage=50M:messages=1000 > quota_rule2: Trash:storage=50M:messages=100 > quota_rule3: shared*:storage=100M:messages=1000 > acl: vfile > expire: Trash 7 Spam 30 > expire_dict: proxy::expire > dict: > quotadict: mysql:/etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-quota.conf > quota2dict: mysql:/etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-quota2.conf (the two quota-dicts could probably be merged into one) /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf: > driver = mysql > connect = host=localhost dbname=confixx user=confixx password=p4ssw0rd > default_pass_scheme = CRYPT > password_query = SELECT CONCAT(account, '@', kunde) as user, longpw as password FROM pop3 WHERE (account='%u' and gesperrt='0' > user_query = SELECT CONCAT('/var/mail/vmail/', p.kunde, '/', p.account,'/') as home, 249 as uid, 249 as gid, CONCAT('*:storage=', p.maxkbhard) AS quota_rule, CONCAT('shared.*:storage=', k.shared_maxkb) as quota2_rule FROM pop3 AS p, kunden AS k WHERE k.kunde = p.kunde AND CONCAT(p.account, '@', p.kunde) = '%u' (quota-values in kilobytes) /etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-quota.conf: > connect = host=localhost dbname=confixx user=confixx password=p4ssw0rd > table = dovecot_quota > select_field = current > where_field = path > username_field = username /etc/dovecot/dovecot-dict-quota2.conf: > connect = host=localhost dbname=confixx user=confixx password=p4ssw0rd > table = dovecot_quota_shared > select_field = current > where_field = path > username_field = username (tables are exactly as specified in dovecot-wiki)

[Dovecot] Segfault in ACL Plugin + user shared folders

Hi Timo, I have another problem, this time with user shared folders: User "markus" shared the folder "ForTest" to test: SETACL "INBOX/ForTest" test akxeilrwts dovecot-acl and shared-mailboxes.db have been successfully updated. As user "test" the folder (and "#User" namespace) is not visible. [Dovecot] Dovecot -> Gmail (via POP Mail Fetcher)
by Neil 20 Apr '09

20 Apr '09

I'm trying to move my entire email store from my Dovecot installation (which I normally access via IMAP) into Gmail using Gmail's Mail Fetcher (which functions over POP); and I'm running into two problems: 1. Gmail only imported 78 out of 1000+ mails in my inbox, which I'm taking to mean that Dovecot is reporting only those 78 as new. How can I get Dovecot to send all mail over as new? 2. I can't be sure of this yet (since, due to #1, Gmail doesn't seem to be downloading everything), but I'm pretty sure Dovecot is only reporting my Inbox emails over POP; is there a way I can get all my mail, from all my folders, to stream in over POP? Thanks, Neil PS. I'm not leaving Dovecot entirely, I just need to have my mail in another place in case something happens to my server...

[Dovecot] Strange behaivour with extended characters
by Armando Soto Baeza 20 Apr '09

20 Apr '09

Hi there. I am using dovecot in almost all the mail servers I configure, but I have not noticed some problems till now, when I configured a server for a japanese language based customer. Now I know, the problem is not about this customer, but it seems to be a constant in all my servers (for some reason we did not noticed that before). The situation is like this. When receving mail with extended (not only japanese) characters in the subject, Outlook Express does not recognize them. Most of our users do not use OE, but most of the japanese do. This is not all. When extended chars are also in the body, they look well when the maqil still arrives, but if forwarded to another account, or when mail is an answer to another, extended characters are not well displayed. In some tests we have done, I found more or less the same is happening when using squirrelmail. The funny thing is that the problem dos not appear when using Evolution or Outlook (the MS Office component). I move some pamrs in dovecot.conf and get some results (before moving them, the problem extended to attachements), but still remains as described. Somebody has seen such a behaivour and solved it? I was thinking to change dovecot for another agent, but will be happier using dovecot. Any suggestion? Thanks in advice.

[Dovecot] [SIEVE: Redirect] Double ">" in forwarded envelop sender address => Gmail syntax error
by Toorop 20 Apr '09

20 Apr '09

Hi, Plateform: gentoo + qmail My deliver line is in a .qmail-USER file: |/var/qmail/bin/preline /usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver -f ${SENDER:-<>} -d user(a)domain.tld I notice that sieve implementation in Dovecot use double ">" for the envelop sender when there is a redirect command in sieve script. (i've tried preline -f, without -f ${SENDER:-<>},... but nothing change for the the envelop sender syntax, alway the double ">") And that fact breaks forwardin to Gmail. Gmail reply that there is a syntax error probably due to the double "<<" (<<address>> and not <address>) as we can see in the log behind: Dovecot logs: deliver(stephane@XXXX): Apr 20 16:06:44 Info: Sending a forward to <XXXX(a)gmail.com> with return path <<stephane@XXXXXX>> deliver(stephane@XXXXX: Apr 20 16:06:44 Info: msgid=<49EC816D.9090403(a)XXXXX.com>: forwarded to <XXXXX(a)gmail.com> qmail-send logs: 2009-04-20 16:06:44.877793500 info msg 14815541: bytes 1290 from <<stephane(a)XXXXX.com>> qp 17780 uid 89 2009-04-20 16:06:44.892303500 starting delivery 6356: msg 14815541 to remote XXXXX(a)gmail.com 2009-04-20 16:06:44.982424500 delivery 6356: failure: Connected_to_209.85.219.1_but_sender_was_rejected./Remote_host_said:_555_5.5.2_Syntax_error._1si7169155ewy.101/ 2009-04-20 16:06:44.982502500 status: local 0/10 remote 0/80 Is there something to do to fix that probleme ? [Dovecot] 0 mails available even if mails in mailbox
by Raphael Thoma 20 Apr '09

20 Apr '09

Hello We are currently facing the problem, that dovecot doesn't return any messages (Pop3: +OK 0 messages) even if there are messages in the cur and new directory (maildir format). The logfile does not contain any information other than login/logout. After I deleted the dovecot.index file, all messages are available and everything works as expected. According to the wiki page [1] the main index file should be synchronized when the cur and new timestamps changed. I suppose this synchronization doesn't work correctly because the problem still existed after I changed the timestamps manually. Dovecot version: 10.0.14 Operating System: FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE-p1 CPU Arch: amd64 Filesystem: NFS Clients: The problem exists on Pop3 and IMAP. It doesn't matter which client. I could reproduce the problem on outlook, thunderbird and even on telnet. Reproduced: +OK Dovecot ready. user user(a)domain.com +OK pass password +OK Logged in. list +OK 0 messages: After deleting dovecot.index: +OK Dovecot ready. user user(a)domain.com +OK pass password +OK Logged in. list +OK 20 messages: It seems to be a problem with the index-file from dovecot which doesn't seem to be synchronized. What could be the reason for this behaviour? How can we fix this issue for all customers? Kind regards Raphael Thoma [1] http://wiki.dovecot.org/IndexFiles

[Dovecot] dovecot deliver with sieve: Corrupted index cache file (in-memory index).cache: Broken fields for mail UID

Hi, Running dovecot deliver 1.1.11 with a sieve script (dovecot-sieve 1.1.6 + changeset b9567e94b897) the following messages started to show up in the mail logs for some (spam) messages: deliver(mathiaz): Apr 18 19:03:06 Error: Corrupted index cache file (in-memory index).cache: Broken fields for mail UID 1 deliver(mathiaz): Apr 18 19:03:06 Error: Couldn't fix broken header unfolding deliver(mathiaz): Apr 18 19:03:06 Info: msgid=<01c9548a$f1666dfe$6c822ecf@pillarsx6>: saved mail to INBOX How serious are these? [Dovecot] Suggestion: deliver should honor mail_log_prefix
by Mike Abbott 19 Apr '09

19 Apr '09

I can set the log prefix for imap/pop3 processes using mail_log_prefix but the log prefix for deliver is hard-coded. (I'm using 1.1.13.) Deliver should either honor mail_log_prefix or have its own setting (deliver_log_prefix?). What do you think?

[Dovecot] Released Sieve v0.1.5 and ManageSieve v0.11.4 for Dovecot v1.2.rc3 and ManageSieve v0.10.6 for Dovecot v1.1.14
by Stephan Bosch 18 Apr '09

18 Apr '09

Hello Dovecot users, This is a simultaneous release of new versions of Sieve-related software for Dovecot v1.1 and v1.2. Only the Sieve implementation itself has seen significant development. The ManageSieve packages only have small fixes and the ManageSieve patches are updated as usual to match the new Dovecot releases. Changelog Sieve v0.1.5: * Ported the implementation of the Sieve include extension to the latest draft. This means that the import and export commands are replaced by a new command called global. The import and export commands are now DEPRICATED and are mere aliases for the global command. The new specification also adds the :once modifier to the include command. The also newly specified global.* variable namespace is not implemented yet as support for variable namespaces is currently missing. * Did a major rework of the multiscript support for better error handling and made sure that persistent global scripts (sieve_before/sieve_after) are always executed, even when the user does not have a script of his own and a global default is missing. + Provided basic support for the environment extension. Currenly, the name, version and host items are useful. Others are pending. + Improved error message that is presented when an unknown Sieve extension is provided as argument to the require command. It now notifies the user that Sieve core commands do not need to be specified in require. - Fixed bug in includes at levels deeper than one. - Fixed bug in address matching that was caused by the failure to handle group specifications. In Dovecot, these are marked by address items with NULL elements, which causes a segfault if not considered. The group 'undisclosed-recipients:;' in particular triggered this bug. Bug reported by Bernhard Schmidt. Changelog ManageSieve v0.11.4 (Dovecot v1.2.rc3): * Adjusted to changes in the Dovecot signal handler API. Changelog ManageSieve v0.10.6 (Dovecot v1.1.14): - Fixed small problems in the login proxy support. -- The releases are available as follows: Sieve for Dovecot 1.2: http://www.rename-it.nl/dovecot/1.2/dovecot-1.2-sieve-0.1.5.tar.gz http://www.rename-it.nl/dovecot/1.2/dovecot-1.2-sieve-0.1.5.tar.gz.sig ManageSieve for Dovecot v1.2 (package + patch): http://www.rename-it.nl/dovecot/1.2/dovecot-1.2-managesieve-0.11.4.tar.gz http://www.rename-it.nl/dovecot/1.2/dovecot-1.2-managesieve-0.11.4.tar.gz.s… http://www.rename-it.nl/dovecot/1.2/dovecot-1.2.rc3-managesieve-0.11.4.diff… http://www.rename-it.nl/dovecot/1.2/dovecot-1.2.rc3-managesieve-0.11.4.diff… ManageSieve + patch for Dovecot v1.1 (package + patch): http://www.rename-it.nl/dovecot/1.1/dovecot-1.1-managesieve-0.10.6.tar.gz http://www.rename-it.nl/dovecot/1.1/dovecot-1.1-managesieve-0.10.6.tar.gz.s… http://www.rename-it.nl/dovecot/1.1/dovecot-1.1.14-managesieve-0.10.6.diff.… http://www.rename-it.nl/dovecot/1.1/dovecot-1.1.14-managesieve-0.10.6.diff.… -- Have fun testing the new releases and don't hesitate to notify me when there are problems. [Dovecot] Mail replication
by Renaud Allard 18 Apr '09

18 Apr '09

Hello, I am running an asynchronously replicated mail setup. 2 servers are each running an smtp server which uses dovecot as the LDA. I am using unison to replicate mail files between servers. Before, I was using Maildir format and after reading so much good papers about the very good performance of dbox format, I decided to switch to dbox. However, I now have a very annoying problem, as mails are created with names like u.1234 and numbers are following each others. So, if there is for example a mail stored as u.1001 on both servers, and now 2 mails arrive at about the same time, 1 on each server. Then, they will both be created as u.1002, that means unison will encounter a conflict as both files are different. So my question would be, is there a way to tell the servers to increment by 2 instead of 1 and have each an offset (like you can do with mysql with auto incrementing tables for example)? That way, with former example, one mail would be stored as u.1002 and the other as u.1003. Thanks

[Dovecot] Logging to see exactly all IMAP commands?
by Johan Persson 18 Apr '09

18 Apr '09

I was wondering if there is some additional logging that can be enabled to make it possible to have Dovecot print all actual IMAP commands it receives in a conversation? /Johan

[Dovecot] Feature Request: Control over IMP IDLE 'OK Still Here' message timings
by Robert Goldsmith 18 Apr '09

18 Apr '09

Hi all, I would like to make a feature request regarding IMAP Idle support. Currently when a client triggers Idle support, Dovecot then sends 'OK Still Here' messages every 2 minutes. This is apparently to prevent NAT systems killing the tcp connection and disconnecting the client. However, while this may be fine for desktop clients, this rapidly drains the battery life of mobile clients such as phones. Unfortunately, the timing control on this behaviour is a c define at the top of cmd-idle.c and is only adjustable at compile-time. I have experimented with this define and find a timeout of 20 minutes between 'OK' messages is perfectly adequate for my system setup and results in a significant battery saving for my Nokia 6120c (increasing from ~ 6 hours to ~ 55 hours from full charge to low battery warning). Therefore, can you please make the timeout changeable from the config file, even if it defaults to the current 2min timing, so admins supporting mobile users can balance battery life with a need to prevent killed tcp connections. Thanks Robert Goldsmith --- GnuPG public key: http://www.Far-Blue.co.uk

[Dovecot] Shared folders and subscriptions
by Markus Werner 18 Apr '09

18 Apr '09

Hi, I've got a problem with user shared folders and subscriptions. When I try to subscribe a folder, dovecot returns "OK Subscribe completed", but the newly subscribed folder is not listed with LSUB: a1 login test(a)example.com ******* a1 OK [CAP..... a2 list "" "*" * LIST (\HasChildren) "/" "INBOX" * LIST (\Noselect \HasChildren) "/" "#User" * LIST (\Noselect \HasChildren) "/" "#User/markus(a)example.com" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "#User/markus(a)example.com/ForTest" a3 subscribe "#User/markus(a)example.com/ForTest" a3 OK Subscribe completed. a4 lsub "" "*" * LSUB (\Noselect) "/" "#User/markus(a)example.com" Dovecot is 1.2-rc3, namespace configuration as follows: namespace private { separator = / prefix = INBOX/ inbox = yes subscriptions = yes } namespace public { separator = / prefix = "#Shared/" location = maildir:/var/spool/dovecot/sharedfolders:INDEX=~/Maildir/index/public:CONTROL=~/Maildir/control/public subscriptions = yes } namespace shared { separator = / prefix = "#User/%%u/" location = maildir:%%h/Maildir:INDEX=~/Maildir/index/shared/%%u:CONTROL=~/Maildir/control/shared subscriptions = yes list = yes } I tried without CONTROL= directory in the shared namespace, but that made no difference. [Dovecot] Sieve "redirect"
by James Butler 18 Apr '09

18 Apr '09

Is there an alternative to the "redirect" Sieve capability? For example: if header :contains "Subject" "Listserv" { redirect "list-user1(a)example.com"; redirect "list-user2(a)example.com"; redirect "list-user3(a)example.com"; stop; } How can I do the above without using "redirect"? Unfortunately, "redirect" seems to be unsupported by Dovecot. Thank you. James

[Dovecot] Address Extensions with System Users
by Jeff Grossman 18 Apr '09

18 Apr '09

I am using Dovecot 1.2RC2 with Postfix 2.5.5. Everything is running fine. I would like to start using address extensions and have e-mail automatically filtered into folders based on the folder name after the "+" in the e-mail address. I only use system users, no virtual users. I have Deliver configured in main.cf as: mailbox_command = /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver Everything I can find about setting this up applies to virtual users which I do not have. How do I get Deliver to recognize the address extension. I am sure it is easy, and I apologize for not finding the answer out myself. Here is a copy of my dovecot -n output: # 1.2.rc2: /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf # OS: Linux 2.6.29-1-amd64 x86_64 Debian squeeze/sid base_dir: /var/run/dovecot/ protocols: imap imaps pop3 pop3s ssl_cert_file: /etc/ssl/certs/stikman-godaddy.crt ssl_key_file: /etc/ssl/private/stikman-godaddy.key ssl_cipher_list: ALL:!LOW:!SSLv2 disable_plaintext_auth: no login_dir: /var/run/dovecot//login login_executable(default): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(imap): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(pop3): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/pop3-login mail_location: maildir:~/Maildir mail_executable(default): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap mail_executable(imap): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap mail_executable(pop3): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/pop3 mail_plugin_dir(default): /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap mail_plugin_dir(imap): /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap mail_plugin_dir(pop3): /usr/local/lib/dovecot/pop3 auth default: mechanisms: plain login passdb: driver: pam userdb: driver: passwd plugin: sieve: sieve

[Dovecot] Setup Question
by Jeff Grossman 17 Apr '09

17 Apr '09

I really want to try and get this plus addressing working correctly with Dovecot and Postfix. After doing some reading I think I am going to change my Postfix setup from mailbox_command to mailbox_transport. I have a few questions to make sure I am thinking correctly. All of my users are system users. Their mail is delivered directly to their "/home/<user>/Maildir" directory. Everything works great and I have no problems. Here is what I am thinking of doing. 1. Create a new vmail user and group. 2. Have all mail delivered for each user to the "/home/vmail/<user>/" directory. All mail will be owned by vmail, but that is okay since Dovecot is the only thing touching the mail files anyway. 3. Change the mail_location setting in dovecot.conf to "mail_location = /home/vmail/%u 4. Uncomment the auth_socket_path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-master setting in dovecot.conf 5. Switch Postfix's main.cf to use "mailbox_transport = dovecot" and put the following line in master.cf: 1. dovecot unix - n n - - pipe flags=DR user=vmail:vmail argv=/usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver -f ${sender} -d ${recipient} -n -m ${extension} 6. Copy the current users mail to the new vmail location. What is the best way to copy it preserving date and time stamps on the mail? Did I cover all of the steps are am I missing something? Here is a copy of my current dovecot -n output. Thanks for any help you can offer me. # 1.2.rc3: /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf # OS: Linux 2.6.29-1-amd64 x86_64 Debian squeeze/sid base_dir: /var/run/dovecot/ protocols: imap imaps pop3 pop3s ssl_cert_file: /etc/ssl/certs/ssl.crt ssl_key_file: /etc/ssl/private/ssl.key ssl_cipher_list: ALL:!LOW:!SSLv2 disable_plaintext_auth: no login_dir: /var/run/dovecot//login login_executable(default): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(imap): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(pop3): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/pop3-login mail_location: maildir:~/Maildir mail_executable(default): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap mail_executable(imap): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap mail_executable(pop3): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/pop3 mail_plugin_dir(default): /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap mail_plugin_dir(imap): /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap mail_plugin_dir(pop3): /usr/local/lib/dovecot/pop3 auth default: mechanisms: plain login passdb: driver: pam userdb: driver: passwd plugin: sieve: sieve

[Dovecot] Active Directory LDAP authentication fails after a time
by noahisaac 17 Apr '09

17 Apr '09

Hi - I've got Dovecot version 1.0.7 running on a CentOS 5.2 machine. It's serving pop, imap and imaps and authenticating against an Active Directory machine. This all works fine at first, but after about two weeks or so, dovecot's authentication against AD starts to fail. All of dovecot's authentication attempts time out. I also have postfix on the same machine authenticating against the same AD, and it does not seem to experience this issue. If I restart dovecot, the authentication starts working again. I've gone over /var/log/maillog, but I don't see anything particularly useful. The only thing I really see is: dovecot: IMAP(noah): Disconnected for inactivity Here's some of the relevant portions of my configs: dovecot.conf auth default { mechanisms = plain passdb ldap { args = /etc/dovecot-ldap.conf } passdb passwd-file { args = /etc/dovecot/passdb master = yes } userdb static { args = uid=vmail gid=vmail home=/home/vmail/%u } user = root } dovecot-ldap.conf hosts = admachine.domain.com base = dc=domain,dc=com ldap_version = 3 auth_bind = yes auth_bind_userdn = DOMAIN\%u Does anybody have any ideas about why this is happening, or maybe just an idea about how to better troubleshoot it? If you need any more info, I'll be happy to provide it. Can I tell dovecot to be a little more verbose with it's log entries (I've already got auth_debug set to yes, but I'm not getting very much info)? Thanks! [Dovecot] SELinux and "i_stream_read() failed: Permission denied"
by James Butler 17 Apr '09

17 Apr '09

Not a problem ... sharing a solution (this time)! Please correct my understanding of the process, if required. "i_stream_read() failed: Permission denied" is an error message generated when a large-ish file (>128kb in my case) is attached to a message that has been passed to Dovecot's deliver program when SELinux is being enforced. In my case, these messages are first run through Spamassassin, then passed to deliver, however the SELinux policy that is being violated relates to deliver, and not to Spamassassin, even though I do NOT generate the errors WITHOUT running Spamassassin. I'm not going to guess as to why that is. The policies below resolve the issue, and now large-ish (even LARGE) attachments come through without a whimper with Postfix+Spamassassin+Dovecot. The problem is that deliver is not running with the correct SELinux policy to be able to write to the global /tmp directory (in my case, after receiving the big attachment from SA), even if that directory's permissions allow it. (Bless you, SELinux!) Small-ish file attachments do not trigger this deliver functionality. Here's a complete error message, and its subsequent errors in the course of delivering a large-ish message+attachment: =================================================== deliver(user): unlink(/tmp/dovecot.deliver.. \ 1239836047.9469.46242b1037005551) failed: Permission denied deliver(user): copy: i_stream_read() failed: Permission denied deliver(user): read(mail, uid=1) failed: Permission denied deliver(user): read(mail, uid=1) failed: Permission denied deliver(user): msgid=: save failed to INBOX: Internal error occurred. \ Refer to server log for more information. [2009-04-15 17:54:07] =================================================== This is the final error series received before the policies were finally updated, and shows an error during deliver's attempt to "unlink()" (remove) the temporary file. Previous errors occurred during attempts to "stat()" and "creat()" (sic) the temporary files. Basically, the "dovecot_deliver_t" context needs to be able to create, read, write and remove files in the /tmp directory ("tmp_t" context). Below, I am pasting my "local_postfix.te" SELinux policy file. It includes instructions for using it, and for figuring out how to do other SELinux policy adjustments on your own. This is my COMPLETE Postfix+Dovecot SELinux policy group. I also have policies for Spamassassin, if anyone wants them. If you are running Sendmail or another MTA instead of Postfix, you can build on what you find below and establish your own policies. I hope this proves useful. Again, please feel free to correct any misunderstandings I may be promoting with this message. Use at your own risk, please! No guarantees ... it just worked, for me. James ## NOTE: I have broken lines in the following using the standard "\" notation to fix the email format better. However the local_postfix.te file should NOT have ANY lines broken. Remove my "\" notation and keep the lines together and you should be okay. ## ####### HOW TO USE THIS #################################################### # SELinux, Postfix, Dovecot # # SELinux needs help resolving Postfix+Dovecot context issues. # # This file + the following instructions should get you # # on your way to resolving the policies between those contexts. # # # # 1) Create this file with the data shown below: # # local_postfix.te # # 2) Compile this file: # # checkmodule -M -m -o local_postfix.mod local_postfix.te # # 3) Create SELinux policy package: # # semodule_package -o local_postfix.pp -m local_postfix.mod # # 4) Move policy package to normal SELinux modules directory: # # mv local_postfix.pp /etc/selinux/targeted/modules/active/modules/ # # 5) Update kernel with new policy package: # # semodule -i \ # # /etc/selinux/targeted/modules/active/modules/local_postfix.pp # # # # Test: Send mail from remote to this system. # # Check /var/log/maillog for mail errors and # # /var/log/messages & /var/log/audit/audit.log for more specific # # SELinux errors # # Also, SELinux will provide the command (sealert...) for more details # # Use the error info you see in messages (or sealert...) to create # # new entries in local_postfix.te, then re-compile, package # # and update the kernel. # # # # Alternately, you can use this to generate a .te file automatically # # from the SELinux errors displayed in /var/log/audit/audit.log (or # # from /var/log/messages IF you do NOT have audit installed): # # # # audit2allow -m local -l -i /var/log/audit/audit.log > local_postfix.te # # # # (This is also helpful if you can't guess the correct domain/policy to # # use from reading the error messages.) [Dovecot] UW-IMAP migration to namespaces
by Jernej Porenta 17 Apr '09

17 Apr '09

Hello, I am trying to migrate existing UW-IMAP installation to dovecot 1.1.14 and I am having troubles with namespaces. As you know UW-IMAP allows full system access to home directory of a user and you can set up dovecot to do that as well, but I would like to use namespaces. If I set my namespaces like this: namespace private { separator = / prefix = inbox = yes location = mbox:~/:INBOX=~/.mailbox hidden = yes list = yes } namespace private { separator = / prefix = mail/ location = mbox:~/mail prefix = mail/ hidden = yes } Everything is working fine, but I am seeing also all other files in home directory of a user, but this is annoying if you have users with public_html folder with millions of files in it. Dovecot indexing makes index.log file for every file seen in namespace, so you have several million index files for files that are not mailboxes. So I was wondering is there a way to skip certain directories in namespaces or a way to setup namespaces in a way, that you would have: - INBOX in home directory - some folders in home directory (via .subscriptions) - some folders in %h/mail/ directory - and not seeing all other files/directories in home dir Thanks in advance, regards, Jernej

[Dovecot] Multiple instances and/or separate certificates per email address
by Simon L Jackson 17 Apr '09

17 Apr '09

Hi, We have a mail server with multiple instances of Postfix each listening on a different IP address to create a set of virtual mail servers. There are various reasons why separate instances of Postfix seems to work best to achieve this goal, but I wont divert into that discussion here. I would like so match this with Dovecot. The listening side isn't a problem as Dovecot can listen on multiple explicit IP addresses. However, we would prefer a separate SSL certificate for each virtual mail server i.e. for each IP address. Would it be better to have multiple instances of Dovecot on the server (not sure what the issues might be with this) or would it be better/easier to be able to specify separate SSL certificates for each listen address, since there isn't any other reason I can see to have multiple instances. Any thought? Is there a way to do this now or would this be a new feature request? [Dovecot] v1.1.14 and v1.2.rc3 released
by Timo Sirainen 17 Apr '09

17 Apr '09

http://dovecot.org/releases/1.1/dovecot-1.1.14.tar.gz http://dovecot.org/releases/1.1/dovecot-1.1.14.tar.gz.sig http://dovecot.org/releases/1.2/rc/dovecot-1.2.rc3.tar.gz http://dovecot.org/releases/1.2/rc/dovecot-1.2.rc3.tar.gz.sig Fixed lots of bugs in v1.2 related to shared mailboxes and virtual mailboxes. Keep on testing and sending bug reports and hopefully we'll get v1.2.0 release out soon. :) Also v1.3 branch has started and it's coming along nicely. Multi-dbox is working and looks like its performance is very nice. LMTP server is basically implemented, except master process doesn't start it. Adding the master code started becoming so annoying that I think I'll finally finish the master process rewrite, or at least the most important parts of it. So looks like v1.3 might become v2.0 after all. v1.1.14 2009-04-16 Timo Sirainen <tss(a)iki.fi> * IMAP: Don't allow APPEND to specify INTERNALDATE more than 2 hours into future. With Maildir future INTERNALDATEs may mess up incremental backups. - Date: header was always being added to cache file when saving messages, even if clients didn't really want it. This caused POP3-only users to have dovecot.index.cache file unneededly. - Character set conversion in specific mails may have caused Dovecot to allocate all the available memory (in default configuration dying after having allocated 256 MB). This happened only while searching messages. - Message address parser didn't handle empty group:; correctly. - imap/pop3-login: Don't crash when shutting down and destroying clients. - deliver wasn't using mail_access_groups setting. - mbox: When doing autodetection, if mbox didn't find an existing mail directory it just went and created it anyway, instead of failing the storage creation. - Fixed some error handling in maildir and index code. v1.2.rc3 2009-04-16 Timo Sirainen <tss(a)iki.fi> * IMAP proxy no longer simply forwards tagged reply from remote authentication command. It's now done only if the remote server sent a [resp-code], otherwise all failure strings are converted to Dovecot's "Authentication failed." to make sure that if remote isn't using Dovecot it won't reveal user's existence. + Quota roots can now specify which namespace's quota they're tracking. This is probably the most useful for giving public namespaces a quota. + Added imap_idle_notify_interval setting. - Fixes to shared mailbox handling - Fixes to virtual mailboxes - Fixed compiling with some FreeBSD and NetBSD versions - THREAD REFS still might have returned one (0) at the beginning. - deliver wasn't using mail_access_groups setting. - Fixed some error handling in maildir and index code.

[Dovecot] Postfix, Dovecot SASL and Entourage smtps authentication fails.
by Mart Pirita 17 Apr '09

17 Apr '09

Tere. Recently just migrated from Sendmail 8.14.3 to Postfix 2.5.6 and switched from Cyrus-sasl 2.1.22 to Dovecot 1.1.13 sasl, all are compiled from source and I have used Dovecot for a long time, since alpha versions. Everything worked well for Outlook Express, Outlook and Thunderbird clients, but Microsoft Entourage 2004 or 2008 clients smtps fails - "Authentication failed because Entourage doesn't support any of the available authentication methods." Similar case like - http://archives.neohapsis.com/archives/postfix/2008-09/thread.html#145 I tried everything, the config is like described in Postfix and Dovecot sites - http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/PostfixAndDovecotSASL I also tried in main.cf smtpd_sasl_security_options =forward_secrecy like described in http://www.postfix.org/postconf.5.html#smtpd_sasl_security_options But none helped. So I switched back to Cyrus-sasl and Entourage works well like before with sendmail. I started to search what may be the reason, and seems with Dovecot sasl Postfix wont advertise needed stuff in ehlo: With Cyrus: telnet localhost 25 Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localdomain.localhost. Escape character is '^]'. 220 my.host.ee ESMTP EHLO example.com 250-my.host.ee 250-PIPELINING 250-SIZE 250-ETRN 250-STARTTLS 250-ENHANCEDSTATUSCODES 250-8BITMIME 250 DSN starttls 220 2.0.0 Ready to start TLS With dovecot: telnet localhost 25 Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localdomain.localhost. Escape character is '^]'. 220 my.host.ee ESMTP EHLO example.com starttls 220 2.0.0 Ready to start TLS Setting with Cyrus in main.cf smtpd_tls_auth_only = no gives even more but still nothing with Dovecot: telnet localhost 25 Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localdomain.localhost. Escape character is '^]'. 220 my.host.eeESMTP EHLO example.com 250-my.host.ee 250-PIPELINING 250-SIZE 250-ETRN 250-STARTTLS 250-AUTH PLAIN LOGIN 250-AUTH=PLAIN LOGIN 250-ENHANCEDSTATUSCODES 250-8BITMIME 250 DSN So is this a Entourage or Dovecot or Postfix bug? I really like to drop the Cyrus and use only Dovecot sasl. Any hint is welcome. -- Mart

[Dovecot] public folders question
by Xueron Nee 17 Apr '09

17 Apr '09

Hi, Shared folders is ok now. and when I create a public folder follow the doc http://wiki.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes/Public, I can not get the boxes listed. namespace: type: public separator: / prefix: public/ location: maildir:/home/data/public:INDEX=~/Maildir/public list: children # ls /home/data/public/ -a . .. dovecot-shared .test1 .test2 .test3 And then, I checked the shared folders created by 'setacl' command, and add a dovecot-acl-list file in the root public folder, ok, I got it. # cat /home/data/public/dovecot-acl-list 1239108915 test1 so, 'dovecot-acl-list' should be created manually or any other methods? [Dovecot] Is there any more detailed docs about dict configuration
by Xueron Nee 17 Apr '09

17 Apr '09

Hi, I am looking for some help on dict configration. I'm trying to config shared and public mailbox, and use sql as acl backend. Here is my config: table: CREATE TABLE `shared_dict` ( `id` int(10) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, `from_user` char(50) NOT NULL, `to_user` char(50) NOT NULL, `status` int(10) NOT NULL DEFAULT '1', PRIMARY KEY (`id`), KEY `from_user` (`from_user`), KEY `to_user` (`to_user`) ) dovecot-dict-sql.conf map { pattern = shared/shared-boxes/user/$from/$to table = shared_dict value_field = status fields { from_user = $from to_user = $to } } dovecot.conf acl_shared_dict = proxy::shared_dict It works, and when i use 'setacl', it can add a record. All I want are some more detailed docs about the `pattern' line, and such as how to add a `group' function. :) Detailed on quota/expire dict configration are welcome, too. :) Thanks! -- Xueron Nee http://www.xueron.com

[Dovecot] Public mailboxes configuration to receive mails
by Didier Faugeron 17 Apr '09

17 Apr '09

Hello, I would like to know how to use Public mailboxes in my Dovecot environment (dovecot 1.2.beta4) Currently my dovecot server is only used for mailbox user. The Postfix master.cf is configured with the following line: "dovecot unix - n n - - pipe flags=DRhu user=vmail:vmail argv=/usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver -d ${user}" Both dovecot and postfix use LDAP requests for authentication and users data retrieving. However I don't use userdb database to get the users home directory but an userdb static instruction : "args = uid=vmail gid=vmail home=/data/maildir/%1Lu/%Lu allow_all_users=yes" I have configured my dovecot.conf to create a namespace Public, and it works fine: an user who have read/write access(ACL) to a public mailbox can subscribe to it and read/copy mails. My problem is to deliver mails in this public mailbox. I don't know how to do it. Therefore, first question: is it possible to deliver mails to a public mailbox through the LDA/Postfix ? If yes, please could you tell me how to configure LDA/Postfix and Dovecot in order to accept and deliver mails to users mailboxes and to public mailboxes ? I assume that the main modifications should be done in the master.cf of Postfix. Could you please specify and clarify what modifications are required ? Find below my dovecot -n output and dovecot-ldap.conf. Thank you in advance for your help and your feedback. [Dovecot] Could sharing a folder with other users cause a loss of emails?
by Alfred Nutile 17 Apr '09

17 Apr '09

we are trying to figure out how and email box is not empty. All we did was /mail/user1 /mail/user2 /mail/shared ln -s /mail/shared /mail/user1/shared ln -s /mail/shared /mail/user2/shared Perms are fine and people where dropping emails in here fine. We added a third one and the user also right clicked in their IMAP client and added a subfolder. It was around that time they where gone. Could any of these actions cause that? PS it is not a mbox layout. Thanks!

[Dovecot] Coredump using virtual folder.
by Matthias Rieber 17 Apr '09

17 Apr '09

Hi, I'm using dovecot 1.2rc2 and I have the following issues with the virtual folder: 1. The virtual folders are flagged with \Noselect and at least thunderbird does not offer to select them. Adding them to the subscriptions file works fine and the folder can be used after that. 2. Two basic virtual work just fine like: $ cat virtual/all/dovecot-virtual INBOX INBOX.Ordner.work.archive.* all and $ cat virtual/unseen/dovecot-virtual INBOX unseen But the third one does not work: $ cat virtual/talk/dovecot-virtual virtual.all inthread x-references2 x-mailbox INBOX The IMAP Client says Unkown server error, the server logs look like this: ... dovecot: Info: IMAP(matthias): virtual: data=~/Maildir/virtual dovecot: Info: IMAP(matthias): fs: root=/home/matthias/Maildir/virtual, index=, control=, inbox= dovecot: Info: IMAP(matthias): Namespace INBOX.: Using permissions from /home/matthias/Maildir: mode=0700 gid=-1 <access happens here> dovecot: Info: IMAP(matthias): Loading modules from directory: /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap dovecot: Info: IMAP(matthias): Module loaded: /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap/lib20_fts_plugin.so dovecot: Info: IMAP(matthias): Module loaded: /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap/lib20_virtual_plugin.so dovecot: Info: IMAP(matthias): Module loaded: /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap/lib20_zlib_plugin.so dovecot: Info: IMAP(matthias): Module loaded: /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap/lib21_fts_squat_plugin.so ... kind regards, matthias

[Dovecot] virtual domains with SQL auth + ntlm (winbind) auth for one of them...
by Tomasz Lutelmowski 16 Apr '09

16 Apr '09

Hello ! Is it possible to configure dovecot so it can use SQL authentication for set of domains, and ntlm authentication for one domain? In other words, I would like to authenticate all users (with user(a)domain.com as login) in SQL server, and if not found, then strip @windomain.com from login and fallback to pam->winbind authentication. So far i have in my dovecot.conf: auth_default_realm = windomain.com mechanisms = plain passdb sql { args = /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf } passdb pam { } passdb passwd { } userdb sql { args = /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf } userdb passwd { } userdb prefetch { } in pam.d/dovecot : auth required pam_nologin.so auth include system-auth-winbind account include system-auth-winbind session include system-auth-winbind With this configuration I can authenticate all users for virtual domains with logins user(a)domain.com - ok, then it fallbacks to pam - ok, but then it returns error (winbind uses only "user" or "DOMAIN\user" as login). After I set auth_username_format = %n I get opposite situation - I can authenticate users with pam, but I can't with SQL (it requires user@domain as login field). Unfortunately auth_default_realm = windomain.com is a must have (and most of the windows clients uses user(a)windomain.com as login anyway). Please help, I'm banging my head against keyboard since 3 days but still no idea how to do it. Best regards, Tomek

[Dovecot] dovecot SASL + Postfix no IMAP or POP3
by Roderick A. Anderson 16 Apr '09

16 Apr '09

A customer is suffering with an older version of a Windows "Mail Server" software that does not permit connections to _other_ ports (25 only). Several of the domains they host have users who's ISPs block port 25 so they can not send mail. They'd like to set up an outbound (relay?) SMTP server for those customers using per user(a)domain.tld authentication. Since I personally use Postfix with dovecot SASL I'd prefer doing the same for them. The only issue I see is how to "disable" IMAP and POP3 and use only the SASL authentication feature. I read that Timo is thinking to _someday_ :-) separate the SASL authentication from the rest of Dovecot, but in the mean time can I just leave out the IMAP and POP3 stuff from dovecot.conf, or is there a disable option? Of course I'll clamp the IMAP and POP3 ports down with iptables but it would be nice knowing Dovecot would just say go away or ignore those connections. Is anyone doing this or have any suggestions, thoughts, or ideas about it? \\||/ Rod --

[Dovecot] INBOX lost in virtual namespace
by Xueron Nee 16 Apr '09

Hi, I have set a virtual namespace to create Virtual POP3 INBOX follow: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Virtual dovecot.conf: mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir # default namespace namespace private { separator = / prefix = list = yes hidden = no subscriptions = yes } # virtual mailbox, for pop3 namespace private { separator = / prefix = virtual/ location = virtual:~/Maildir/virtual:LAYOUT=maildir++ list = no hidden = yes } # Copy of the default namespace. We'll use this in dovecot-virtual file. namespace private { separator = / prefix = secret/ list = no hidden = yes subscriptions = no } # cat ~/Maildir/virtual/.INBOX/dovecot-virtual secret/* all but, the INBOX lost in secret/ namespace :( When list in IMAP: a1 list "" "*" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "Sent" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "Spam" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "Junk" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "Draft" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "Trash" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "INBOX" a1 OK List completed. a1 list "secret/" "*" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "secret/Sent" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "secret/Spam" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "secret/Junk" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "secret/Draft" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "secret/Trash" a1 OK List completed.
