[Dovecot] Convert from maildir to dbox
by Daniel L. Miller 31 Mar '09

31 Mar '09

Ok...I made the leap. Compiled a copy of 1.2b4 (very pleasant compile BTW - almost no warnings, nice code Timo!)...tweaked a config...had a few false starts... 1.2b4 seems to working quite nicely. Now...for my next magical trick... I would like to migrate from maildir to dbox. I've tried using the convert plugin, but it kept failing during the conversion. I should mention my paths: home (old & new) = /var/mail/%d/%n old mail = maildir:/var/mail/%d/%n new mail = dbox:/var/mail/%d/%n/dbox Note that "home" was defined as the same path as "mail" in my old config - I'm looking to fix that as well during the migration. I found entries in my mail log after the convert execution similar to: Mar 30 19:00:52 bubba dovecot: IMAP(sfox(a)amfes.com): rename(/var/mail/amfes.com/sfox/.dovecot.convert.lock/cur, /var/mail/amfes.com/sfox/dbox/mailboxes/dovecot/convert/lock/dbox-Mails) failed: Not a directory Mar 30 19:01:41 bubba dovecot: IMAP(sfox(a)amfes.com): Mailbox conversion failed for mailbox dovecot.convert.lock Now that I'm staring at that line...I'm wondering if that "home=mail" configuration is part of the problem. I currently have about a dozen users on this box - but with very large mailboxes (I still have archived mailing lists in mine!). If there's a few manual steps I need to perform to "condition" this setup prior to conversion please advise. Should I manually shift the mailboxes into a "/var/mail/%d/%n/maildir" folder? -- Daniel

[Dovecot] MAILBOXDIR question
by Stewart Dean 31 Mar '09

31 Mar '09

I'm unclear about where and how this is to be used. I gather it is to be a new standard, but I didn't seem to find anything about it in the Dovecot Wiki Mail Location page. There are some words about it in the 1.1.12/3 release notes, but perhaps I'm thick, but they're meta-ambiguous to me. Is it meant to be used like this: mail_location = mbox:MAILBOXDIR=~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u instead of the current mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u ??? Sorry to be so dense. -- ==== Once upon a time, the Internet was a friendly, neighbors-helping-neighbors small town, and no one locked their doors. Now it's like an apartment in Bed-Stuy: you need three heavy duty pick-proof locks, one of those braces that goes from the lock to the floor, and bars on the windows.... ==== Stewart Dean, Unix System Admin, Bard College, New York 12504 sdean(a)bard.edu voice: 845-758-7475, fax: 845-758-7035

[Dovecot] Panic: Trying to allocate 2147483648 bytes
by David Halik 30 Mar '09

30 Mar '09

Hi all, I recently upgraded from courier to dovecot 1.1.12 on a Solaris 9 system with about 100 users. We have been testing dovecot for sometime in a mixed Linux/Solaris environment and are aware of the index endianess issue with multiple archs. To solve this, we run with INDEX=MEMORY (as seen in the docs) so that only Linux clients have anything to do with the indexes. We generally have much more of them anyways. So far everything is working smoothly, but when someone does a search through directory with a large number of emails, dovecot dies and prints the following message: [ID 107833 mail.crit] Panic: Trying to allocate 2147483648 bytes I googled around and saw this same issue elsewhere, with NFS indexes usually being the problem. However, we have indexes turned off, so I don't understand why the same problem is still happening. Just to be sure, I ran with: mmap_disable = yes dotlock_use_excl = no mail_nfs_storage = yes But there has been no change, I can still reproduce it at will. Setting mail_nfs_index = yes caused my connections to stop working, so that didn't help either. Besides, I wouldn't think that would be the answer considering we set INDEX=MEMORY. This thread also seems to be related, but we're definitely running with this code in 1.1.12, yet it still happens: http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2008-September/033615.html I grabbed a backtrace if it is helpful: http://pastebin.com/f5f3d282c Also, here is dovecot -n: # 1.1.12: /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf # OS: SunOS 5.9 sun4u protocols: imap imaps pop3 pop3s ssl_cert_file: /usr/local/ssl/certs/nbcs.key+crt.pem ssl_key_file: /usr/local/ssl/certs/nbcs.key+crt.pem login_dir: /usr/local/var/run/dovecot/login login_executable(default): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(imap): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(pop3): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/pop3-login login_greeting_capability(default): yes login_greeting_capability(imap): yes login_greeting_capability(pop3): no mail_location: maildir:~/Maildir:INDEX=MEMORY mmap_disable: yes mail_nfs_storage: yes mail_executable(default): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap mail_executable(imap): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap mail_executable(pop3): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/pop3 mail_plugins(default): quota imap_quota mail_plugins(imap): quota imap_quota mail_plugins(pop3): quota pop3_quota mail_plugin_dir(default): /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap mail_plugin_dir(imap): /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap mail_plugin_dir(pop3): /usr/local/lib/dovecot/pop3 pop3_uidl_format(default): %08Xu%08Xv pop3_uidl_format(imap): %08Xu%08Xv pop3_uidl_format(pop3): UID%u-%v namespace: type: private separator: . prefix: INBOX. inbox: yes list: yes subscriptions: yes auth default: passdb: driver: pam args: * userdb: driver: passwd plugin: quota: fs Any help would be appreciated! [Dovecot] Upgrade from 1.0 to 1.1, plus migration from Maildir to dbox
by Daniel L. Miller 30 Mar '09

30 Mar '09

Ok - I gave up on trying to get CIFS to work - there's obviously stuff going on I don't understand. So - instead of trying to get a virtual server to work, I next tried a chroot. That worked...but imapsync error'ed out trying to handle one of my large mailboxes. I was trying to setup a "new" server, migrate all my mail over, verify everything worked - maybe even leave the virtual server operating for a while. But the fates are consipiring against me. So - time to make the leap. I want to upgrade a live version 1.0 server to version 1.1 (from Ubuntu repositories, using version 1.0.10 to 1.1.4). What special steps do I need to take to have this go smoothly? At least I have some semi-tested configs for 1.1 that I can use. Do I just stop the server, upgrade, upgrade the configs, start - and pray? Or is there another step? Also, my legacy installation was using maildir - I'd like to try shifting to dbox. Do I just need to change the prefix on mail_location and the conversion will magically happen? -- Daniel

[Dovecot] dovecot: auth(default): ldap(...): Authenticated user not found
by Stas SUSHKOV 29 Mar '09

29 Mar '09

Hi, I'm trying to set up dovecot together with postfix and experience some problems. Here's in details what I have and what I want to get. I have a ldap server on localhost, a working setup of dovecot to serve sasl, imap using ldap, a working setup of Postfix for (s)smtp (I can authenticate which uses dovecot's sasl). What i wan't to get is a completely working email server for ldap users with their email forwardings (so far they have only 1 forwarding). The porblem I stuck on is the following: when sending mail through (s)smtp, after passing authentication, I get my email dropped. And I see this in logs: http://ciorne.softwareliber.ro/index.php/view/raw/aaf3eb42 ***Authenticated user not found!!!*** My dovecot conf is this: http://ciorne.softwareliber.ro/index.php/view/raw/f8696531 And my dovecot-ldap is this: http://ciorne.softwareliber.ro/index.php/view/raw/698dc851 (I'm using prefetch) Can somebody point me where's my problem. *Any* advices are welcomed!!! Thank you in advance. P.S.: Environment is a vanilla installation of Ubuntu 8.04.02 with latest updates. -- () Campania Panglicii în ASCII /\ http://stas.nerd.ro/ascii/

[Dovecot] sendmail with dovecot sasl
by Mario Pavlov 28 Mar '09

28 Mar '09

Hi, I was wondering if I can make sendmail use dovecot's SASL implementation...maybe I should somehow compile it against dovecot's SASL ? My idea is to make sendmail and dovecot authenticate against one central user/password repository. Is this possible ? thank you. P.S. I want to use virtual users

Hi, Is there a way for dovecot to use a pool of sql (mysql) servers and load balance queries between these? Also fallback to next available sql server if connection to previous one fails. Can dovecot do such things currently? (If not this is feature request). -- Arkadiusz Miśkiewicz PLD/Linux Team arekm / maven.pl http://ftp.pld-linux.org/

[Dovecot] Making changes to dovecot log levels
by Thomas M Goerger 27 Mar '09

27 Mar '09

Hi Timo, Not sure if you saw this yet, or if you're still working on a response. Awhile back I'd written about making changes to some of the log levels that dovecot writes to to stop the process from writing these to monitor. I wanted to run a few changes by you for this, just to make sure these won't cause problems somewhere else. And to send this to the list, in case anyone else wants to make similar changes in the future. In the file src/lib-index/mail-index.c: duplicate the function mail_index_set_error to mail_index_set_warning and call this function in /src/lib-index/mail_cache.c instead int mail_index_set_error(struct mail_index *index, const char *fmt, ...) { va_list va; i_free(index->error); if (fmt == NULL) index->error = NULL; else { va_start(va, fmt); index->error = i_strdup_vprintf(fmt, va); va_end(va); i_error("%s", index->error); } return -1; } changing the line : i_error("%s", index->error); to i_warning("%s", index_error); and for the file src/lib-storage/index/mbox/mbox-sync.c changing this code if (rec == NULL && uid < sync_ctx->idx_next_uid) { /* this UID was already in index and it was expunged */ mbox_sync_set_critical(sync_ctx, "mbox sync: Expunged message reappeared in mailbox %s " "(UID %u < %u, seq=%u, idx_msgs=%u)", sync_ctx->mbox->path, uid, sync_ctx->idx_next_uid, sync_ctx->seq, messages_count); ret = FALSE; rec = NULL; } else if (rec != NULL && rec->uid != uid) { /* new UID in the middle of the mailbox - shouldn't happen */ mbox_sync_set_critical(sync_ctx, "mbox sync: UID inserted in the middle of mailbox %s " "(%u > %u, seq=%u, idx_msgs=%u)",sync_ctx->mbox->path, rec->uid, uid, sync_ctx->seq, messages_count); ret = FALSE; rec = NULL; from mbox_sync_set_critical( etc... to mail_storage_clear_error(storage) i_warning("Error text"... mail_storage_set_internal_error(storage) to clear and set the storage pointer Hopefully that's all clear. [Dovecot] outlook problem if TLS mailsettings are off
by Georg Käfer 27 Mar '09

27 Mar '09

Dear List, I dont know if its a config problem or its an outlook 2007 issue. Behaviour: If I set /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf: Following is valid with IMAP mailboxes only: disable_plaintext_auth = yes # outlook 2007 with TLS in/out enabled) can show index of mails and klick on mail does preview / doubleklick opens mail PERFECT AS INTENDED disable_plaintext_auth = no # outlook 2007 with TLS/SSL OFF can show index of mails, but (double)-/klick on mail gives me "sandwatch"-mouspointer and I've to restart outlook again (and enable TLS again to get it work again) with POP3 mailbox both variants are working smoothly. [Dovecot] very slow pop3 downloads

Hi all, I have a dovecot installation which very suddenly decided to slow to a crawl yesterday after being totally fine for months. [Dovecot] Preventing IMAP folder deletion?
by dovecot＠corwyn.net 27 Mar '09

27 Mar '09

Hi! I'm running postfix with dovecot using mysql for user accounts, with Outlook being used as the IMAP mail client. I'm using a mail delimiter ("+") and mail automatically goes to a Spam folder as part of spam filtering with amavisd and spam assassin. It's configured so that folders won't automatically create; if the folder isn't there mail delivers to the inbox (so that spam doesn't create extra folders). the problem I ran into today is that a user deleted the Spam folder. While recreating it isn't that hard, is there a way I can prevent them from being able to delete specific folders in IMAP? In squirrelmail I can create "system" folders that the user can't change or delete, but that's client based. Since I don't see that ability in Outlook, can I somehow configure dovecot so the user can't delete specified folders? Thanks Rick Rick Steeves http://www.sinister.net "The journey is the destination"

[Dovecot] Version 2.0 with multiple IP/TLS certificate support.
by Gordon Dickens 26 Mar '09

26 Mar '09

Hello, I sent this email earlier but for some reason it did not go through so I will try again! I am using Dovecot on several servers that require multiple domain SSL certificates. I like Dovecot very much because of its speed and stability. Currently, Dovecot does not support multiple SSL certificates directly although I have gotten around this problem with multiple Dovecot instances running multiple configuration files. However, I would prefer to have one configuration file that supports multiple domain certificates. My understanding is that Dovecot Version 2.0 will have this "multiple SSL certificate" feature. So, my question is, when is version 2.0 projected to be released? Many thanks! Gordon Dickens

[Dovecot] v1.2.beta4 released
by Timo Sirainen 26 Mar '09

26 Mar '09

http://dovecot.org/releases/1.2/beta/dovecot-1.2.beta4.tar.gz http://dovecot.org/releases/1.2/beta/dovecot-1.2.beta4.tar.gz.sig This release fixes a memory corruption bug related to MODSEQ handling in earlier v1.2 releases. Memory corruption means that it's a security bug and possibly exploitable. MODSEQ code is new in v1.2, so v1.1 and older releases are not affected. Other than that, there is an ESORT bugfix and other fixes that were added to v1.1 branch too.

[Dovecot] Missing TMP folder - Dovecot 1.2 Beta3
by Matt Rude 26 Mar '09

26 Mar '09

Recently after upgrading to 1.2 Beta3 from 1.1.13, I started to defer mail. After looking into it deeper, it looks like Dovecot/sieve now asks for a tmp folder in the imap (maildir) folder. Once I added the tmp folder as the logs indicants, the mail was processed normally. I have split my Inbox and imap store to different folder. Looking at what it's trying to do, it looks to me that dovecot/sieve expect the imap directory to be the Inbox. [Dovecot] Dbox Upgrade Problem With MAILBOXDIR
by Alan Swanson 25 Mar '09

25 Mar '09

Hi. Trying to upgrade from Dovecot 1.1.11 to 1.1.13 but having a problem with imap process segfaulting. Backtrace is below. I presume it's related to these MAILBOXDIR changes but the only documentation is the single line in the news for changing to ":MAILBOXDIR=mailboxes" when using dbox. Current configuration is "mail_location = dbox:~/Mail" so what exactly should be changed here? [Dovecot] selection correct auth with multiple auth methods
by jm 25 Mar '09

25 Mar '09

How do you control which socket or authentication process dovecot's pop3 daemon chooses to use? I've got a user database with two flags one to allow pop3 access and the other to allow the use of auth smtp. There are two authentication instances configed, thus, auth default { .... passdb sql { args = /etc/dovecot-sql-postfix.conf } .... socket listen { master { path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-master mode = 0660 user = group = } } auth postfix { ..... passdb sql { args = /etc/dovecot-sql-postfix.conf } .... socket listen { client { path = /var/spool/postfix/private/auth mode = 0660 user = postfix group = postfix } } } From the logs and testing pop3 is using the postfix authentication instance and not the default as expected. Does anyone out there know how control dovecot's pops daemon authentication choice? This infomation seems to be lacking in the documentation I can find. Jeff.

[Dovecot] Making changes to dovecot log levels
by Thomas M Goerger 24 Mar '09

24 Mar '09

Hi Timo, Awhile back I'd written about making changes to some of the log levels that dovecot writes to to stop the process from writing these to monitor. I wanted to run a few changes by you for this, just to make sure these won't cause problems somewhere else. And to send this to the list, in case anyone else wants to make similar changes in the future. In the file src/lib-index/mail-index.c: duplicate the function mail_index_set_error to mail_index_set_warning and call this function in /src/lib-index/mail_cache.c instead int mail_index_set_error(struct mail_index *index, const char *fmt, ...) { va_list va; i_free(index->error); if (fmt == NULL) index->error = NULL; else { va_start(va, fmt); index->error = i_strdup_vprintf(fmt, va); va_end(va); i_error("%s", index->error); } return -1; } changing the line : i_error("%s", index->error); to i_warning("%s", index_error); and for the file src/lib-storage/index/mbox/mbox-sync.c changing this code if (rec == NULL && uid < sync_ctx->idx_next_uid) { /* this UID was already in index and it was expunged */ mbox_sync_set_critical(sync_ctx, "mbox sync: Expunged message reappeared in mailbox %s " "(UID %u < %u, seq=%u, idx_msgs=%u)", sync_ctx->mbox->path, uid, sync_ctx->idx_next_uid, sync_ctx->seq, messages_count); ret = FALSE; rec = NULL; } else if (rec != NULL && rec->uid != uid) { /* new UID in the middle of the mailbox - shouldn't happen */ mbox_sync_set_critical(sync_ctx, "mbox sync: UID inserted in the middle of mailbox %s " "(%u > %u, seq=%u, idx_msgs=%u)",sync_ctx->mbox->path, rec->uid, uid, sync_ctx->seq, messages_count); ret = FALSE; rec = NULL; from mbox_sync_set_critical( etc... to mail_storage_clear_error(storage) i_warning("Error text"... mail_storage_set_internal_error(storage) to clear and set the storage pointer Hopefully that's all clear. [Dovecot] Problem with dovecot + imap idle + qmail-local delivery
by Jochen Schug 24 Mar '09

24 Mar '09

Hi, I've recently switched from courier-imap to dovecot. Everything seemed to work fine, but after I while I noticed that dovecot is occasionaly causing problems with delivery of new incoming mails. System: Gentoo Linux, kernel 2.6.19, qmail 1.03, vpopmail 5.4.26 , dovecot 1.1.11, maildir, mail store on ext3. Symptoms: qmail is having trouble with the mail delivery. First I thought it had something to do with vpopmail or dovecot's quota support, but I tracked it down to qmail-local. I tried two different versions, one with Bill Shupp's maildir++ patch and one without. With the patch, I'm getting "User_over_quota._(#5.1.1)" errors. Mail is delivered once and sender is sent a notification about the exceeded quota. Without the patch, I get "Temporary_error_on_maildir_delivery._(#4.3.0)". Mail is delivered, but delivery is tried again and again. This only happens if a MUA is logged in to the mailbox and IMAP IDLE is being used. If the MUA is disconnected: fine. If dovecot is stopped: fine. I tried a couple of different things, all without success: - upgraded dovecot from 1.1.7 to 1.1.11 - compiled a new kernel with inotify support and recompiled dovecot - migrated mail store from reiserfs to ext3 - disabling quota support in dovecot - tried dovecot's various file locking mechanisms Right now I'm working around this by removing IDLE from the capabilities. This solves the problem, but leaves me with a less functional IMAP server. Any help is greatly appreciated. [Dovecot] Staged migration from mbox to maildir
by Stewart Dean 24 Mar '09

24 Mar '09

So much changes in this migration that the ideal way to do it would be to begin with a few users or a department, then migrate the users affinity group by affinity group: first an institute or so, then the faculty, then the staff, then the students, moving to bigger and bigger groupings as the bugs work out of the migration and the move becomes more assured. We use sendmail and procmail. There's no problem there, as the ~./procmailrc can be changed to over-ride the mbox default until all groups are done and it become the default. The problem comes with IMAP. While dovecot can tell if a folder is mbox or maildir, it has to be pointed to the right place (by namespace definitions in the client, IIRC), and the default of putting the inbox under ~/mail is one I'd like to embrace for various reason...but given that that means moved inbox folders and *that* means either making a global change (there goes staged migration) OR changing the namespace definitions on each PC. I can get to the early few and change the namespaces definition, but there doesn't appear to any equivalent (enlighten me, if I'm missing something) to ~/.procmailrc for imap, so that I don't have to get on the client machine. [Dovecot] Released Sieve v0.1.4
by Stephan Bosch 23 Mar '09

23 Mar '09

Hello Dovecot users, Not much Sieve development was done in the last five weeks, but some important platform-dependent bugs were found and repaired. The main new feature is the addition of a custom Sieve language extension for debugging in the Sieve command line tools. Changelog Sieve v0.1.4: * Started work on the sieve-filter tool. With this command line tool it will be possible to (re-)apply Sieve filters on a mail folder. It is currently undocumented and far from functional. + Added a custom debug extension that provides the possibility to print debug messages from scripts executed by the Sieve tools. - Fixed issue with opening relative paths as a mail file. Bug reported by Ian P. Christian. - Fixed MAC OSX compile problem. Turns out the extern modifier was missing at multiple places. Bug reported by Edgar Fuss. - Fixed Solaris compile problem: removed unecessary and unportable linker flags that caused compile to fail. Bug reported by Andres Yacopino. The release is available as follows: http://www.rename-it.nl/dovecot/1.2/dovecot-1.2-sieve-0.1.4.tar.gz http://www.rename-it.nl/dovecot/1.2/dovecot-1.2-sieve-0.1.4.tar.gz.sig Have fun testing the new release and don't hesitate to notify me when there are problems. [Dovecot] Single Instance Storage still on the roadmap?
by Charles Marcus 20 Mar '09

20 Mar '09

Hey Timo, I was curious where Single Instance Storage fits in on the roadmap, now that you are maybe settled in in your new digs... Is it still coming soon? Has it been pushed back by your new employers priorities? Its real high on mine, so if has been back-burnered, I'll need to start looking for alternatives... Thanks, -- Best regards, Charles

[Dovecot] update of current quota usage
by floss＠pBartels.info 20 Mar '09

20 Mar '09

Hello, I use Dovecot 1.1.11 and store the current quota usage in a Database. As far I can see it, the quota usage is updated each time dovecot performs an action on a mail. For example if a new mail is stored in the inbox, the current quota usage is increased. If a mail is deleted the quota usage is decreased. If there are still existing E-Mails in the inbox, before quota is turned on or if I perfom changes on the "mail storage" myself (for example purging trash or spam, or something) the current quota usage is NOT updated automatically by dovecot. For example I copy some mailboxes to my server, then the current quota for this mailboxes is still zero. Is it correct that dovecot can't do this for me? If yes, it seems I have to write my own (simple) update script and run it sometimes croned (because I don't really trust the actual quota implementation) and/or I have to update the current quota usage each time I perform actions myself. This "workaround" is easy by using a DB storage, but what about other implementations? Wouldn't it be nice if dovecot could do this or provide a tool for it? Thank you! Philipp

[Dovecot] fchown() error with Public Folders
by Stephen Carville 18 Mar '09

18 Mar '09

I was able to get public folders to work with a dedicated account for the hierarchy and ACL's for individual users. I have location defined so that each user has a local index and control files location = maildir:/usr/mail/public/cs/mail:CONTROL=~/Maildir/CS:INDEX=~/Maildir/CS Now i am seeing the folliwing error in the logs. dovecot: IMAP(stephen): fchown() failed with file /home/stephen/Maildir/CS/.Incoming/dovecot.index.log: Operation not permitted As I understand it, dovecot runs as root but the the IMAP process that servicers the request runs as the user so naturally the fchown() fails. However it seems the file is never even created. It there someting I need to do to get this to work? I am using 1.1.7 # 1.1.7: /etc/dovecot.conf # OS: Linux 2.6.18-92.1.10.el5 x86_64 CentOS release 5.2 (Final) protocols: imaps ssl_cert_file: /etc/pki/dovecot/certs/scacifs02-lnx.dovecot.crt ssl_key_file: /etc/pki/dovecot/private/scacifs02-lnx.dovecot.key login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login login_executable: /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap-login mail_location: maildir:~/Maildir mbox_write_locks: fcntl namespace: type: private separator: / inbox: yes list: yes subscriptions: yes namespace: type: public separator: / prefix: CS/ location: maildir:/usr/mail/public/cs/mail:CONTROL=~/Maildir/CS:INDEX=~/Maildir/CS list: yes auth default: passdb: driver: pam userdb: driver: passwd-file args: /etc/imap.passwd -- Stephen Carville

[Dovecot] IMAP ACLs not working
by Seba 18 Mar '09

18 Mar '09

Hi, I've some problems to get folder ACLs working with Dovecot. I've defined some folders (like drafts, spam etc.) for every user and created a dovecot-acl file in every folder so that users can not delete or rename these folders but this does not work as expected. Config ===== Debian Lenny 5.0 Dovecot 1.0.15 dovecot.conf ========= protocols = imap protocol imap { listen = xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx } disable_plaintext_auth = yes log_timestamp = "%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S " ssl_disable = yes mail_location = maildir:/home/vmail/%Ld/%Ln namespace private { separator = . prefix = inbox = yes } mail_privileged_group = vmail protocol imap { mail_plugins = acl } protocol lda { postmaster_address = postmaster(a)example.com hostname = hostname(a)example.com mail_plugins = cmusieve } auth_username_translation = %Lu auth default { mechanisms = cram-md5 passdb pam { } passdb sql { args = /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf } userdb passwd { } userdb static { args = uid=5000 gid=5000 home=/home/vmail/%d/%n allow_all_users=yes } user = root socket listen { master { path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-master mode = 0600 user = vmail } client { path = /var/spool/postfix/private/auth mode = 0660 user = postfix group = postfix } } } Folder structure =========== (For dovecot-acl) /home/vmail/example.com/user/.Spam/dovecot-acl dovecot-acl contains =============== owner lrwstiek For me the config looks OK and I can't find an error... When I change the dovecot-acl to "owner l" for example it seems that this change has no effect. Are there an error in my setup? Seba

Hi, i am about to migrate some internal imapd mboxes to dovecot. Uhg, I win the CluelessnUnobservant Award for this. Thanks everyone for the followups. I caught that myself yesterday and fixed the problem on Postfix's side. To sum up in case anyone else runs in to this, the mistake I made was in assuming that Postfix just made the handoff to Dovecot and that Dovecot would handle the rest, so I commented out the parts of the old config where Postfix handled this when I was using Postfix virtual transport. Once I restored those and gave Postfix the query it needed, it worked fine. Thanks for bearing with me, everyone. Kat

Re: [Dovecot] Dovecot LDA and "undeliverable" emails
by Kat Wisnosky 17 Mar '09

Timo wrote: > So Postfix delivers bounces to everyone by calling Dovecot LDA > separately for each bounce? Looks like a Postfix configuration problem > to me. I should have been more specific... because we'd also changed domain names at the time we moved over to using Dovecot as the LDA, I temporarily disabled automatically bouncing mail addressed to invalid users because I figured that we'd have at least one who decided that they didn't want the standard formation of email addresses... What I'd wanted to happen was for Postfix to accept the message(s) and then for them to be delivered to the postmaster address so that I could address the issue. I'm still unsure as to why, when Dovecot couldn't find the user in the tables, it copied the message to every user of the system - that seems like odd behavior, which indicates that even though the system is "working", I need to fine-tune something. [Dovecot] ACLs are applied recursively to sub mailboxes

[Dovecot] Dovecot as a POP3-/POP3SSL-proxy in front of exchange 2003
by south africa 17 Mar '09

17 Mar '09

Dear all, im looking for a solution to protect an Exchange 2003 email server from direct "pop3-internet-connects". Is it possible that Dovecot act as a POP3-/POP3SSL-Proxy, "LDAP-authenticate" all user logins to a Windows 2003 domain controller and forward then all POP3-connects to a single Exchange 2003 server? Could someone give me some advices or a link for howtos for this solution? The howto on www.dovcot.org (http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/ImapProxy) does not fit in my situation because it prefere a mysql server and not a LDAP-server/domain-controller. [Dovecot] Errors on mbox to Maildir conversion
by Phill Edwards 17 Mar '09

17 Mar '09

I have Julian Fitzell's migrateuser.sh script which uses mb2md-3.20.pl to convert a mailbox in mbox format to Maildir. I have set up a test user called "mailtest" which has mail as follows: /var/mail/mailtest /home/mailtest/mail/ Drafts MoreStuff Sent Items Stuff After the conversion I want all this user's mail to be in /home/mailtest/Maildir/ I'm not quite sure how to run the migrateuser.sh script, but I think it's like this (run as user mailtest): $ /usr/local/bin/mb2md/migrateuser.sh mailtest /home/mailtest /home/mailtest/Maildir When I run this I get the following output: mailtest -- Migrating INBOX... Converting /var/mail/mailtest to maildir: /home/mailtest/Maildir.mdwork.1237291760 Source Mbox is /var/mail/mailtest Target Maildir is /home/mailtest/Maildir.mdwork.1237291760 Created UID list: /home/mailtest/Maildir.mdwork.1237291760/dovecot-uidlist 3 messages. warning: Can't open /home/mailtest/Maildir.mdwork.1237291760: not a selectable mailbox [ERROR] (mismatch during post compare) mailtest -- 0 new message(s) (), 3 total mailtest -- That bit about "not a selectable mailbox" seems to be the problem. Any idea what I'm doing wrong here? Regards, Phill

[Dovecot] folders are not under INBOX
by Ondrej Svoboda 16 Mar '09

hi guys, I hope it's common trouble, but I'm not able to find a solution: - i'am using courier imap and trying to migrate to the dovecot - on courier I have all folders as subfolder of Inbox - i.e. Inbox.Sent but on dovecot the folder Sent is not subfolder of Inbox, but its on the same level. Please is there some possibility to have the subfolders the same behaviour as in courier? we have lot's of customers so after the upgrade the folders can't change. thank you ondrej

[Dovecot] Dovecot and high availability
by d dimov 16 Mar '09

16 Mar '09

Hello dear all. Please accept apologies if the topic was discussed already, tried searching the archives but found few details. What I am looking for would be the best way to making Dovecot highly available in an environment where: two Alteons are load-balancing two Dovecot servers, each Alteon seing both of them; the clients are using exclusively POP3; low volume; in case of a Dovecot server failure service should fail over to the other node with preferably no manual intervention. Failover could mean Alteons just ignoring the failed host and routing all requests to the healthy one. Would it be shared NFS volume mounted on both of the servers from some NAS, maildirs put on that volume and both Dovecots seing the mailboxes simultaneously? Any risks? Is there a good document describing such a setup? Thank you in advance and please indicate if I missed relevant details. Best regards, Dimov

Previously with pop3_lock_session = yes, I needed mail_access_group = mail. With the upgrade to beta2, I changed that to mail_privileged_group = mail as shown above. Now, during a session lasting several seconds, I see the following in maillog: Mar 15 09:35:51 sbh16 dovecot: pop3-login: Login: user=<mark>, method=APOP, rip=68.183.193.239, lip=72.52.113.16, TLS Mar 15 09:36:01 sbh16 dovecot: POP3(mark): fstat(mark.lock) failed: Bad file descriptor Mar 15 09:36:04 sbh16 dovecot: POP3(mark): Disconnected: Logged out top=0/0, retr=1/1919972, del=0/328, size=5381253 Mar 15 09:36:04 sbh16 dovecot: child 9023 (pop3) killed with signal 11 (core dumps disabled) This does not occur with shorter sessions lasting only a few seconds or less. The only symptom is the log messages. The client sees nothing unusual, at least in this case where the session is a retrieval of one large message. I haven't tried long sessions retrieving multiple messages. If I remove pop3_lock_session = yes, the issue does not occur. I don't think I need it. I put it in a long time ago to attempt to solve a problem that was actually caused by something else. Since removing it does seem to avoid this issue, I will leave it out, but I'm reporting this anyway as it seems there may be some underlying problem. -- Mark Sapiro <mark(a)msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B. [Dovecot] pop-proxy to redundant servers ?
by Jan-Frode Myklebust 15 Mar '09

15 Mar '09

I'm considering putting two servers with failover IP-addresses in front of our pop/imap cluster, with dovecot in proxy-mode running on both servers. But, can dovecot handle more than one backend server for each user ? I.e. I would want to point the dovecot proxy to send userX to backend-server1, or backend-server2 if backend-server1 is down. Is something like that possible ? -jf

Changes in v1.2.beta2 since beta1: * Authentication userdb: Renamed system_user to system_groups_user. Probably pretty much no one used this feature. * deliver no longer creates temp files to /tmp. They're instead created to the users' mailbox directories. - IMAP: Fixed SORT command crashing - POP3 was broken in beta1 - Fixes to virtual mailboxes - Fixes to IMAP ACL support Changes in both v1.1.12 and v1.2.beta2: * Added :MAILBOXDIR= to mail_location to specify the root dir for mailboxes. dbox users should migrate to ":MAILBOXDIR=mailboxes", because that's going to be the default in v1.2+. + Linux: Adding -D parameter to login_executable makes login processes dump core to login_dir if they crash. - IMAP: SELECT didn't always return first unseen message in reply - POP3: pop3_lock_session=yes didn't use mail_privileged_group while dotlocking. - mbox: Don't crash if >=8192 bytes long line begins with "From ". - Maildir: More fixes to handling over 26 keywords. - Several logging fixes and improvements - Fixed authentication caching with non-plaintext mechanisms when using a blocking passdb (e.g. MySQL) - Fixed DIGEST-MD5 authentication with user@domain style usernames.

[Dovecot] setting up both system password users AND virtual users
by Jim Pazarena 14 Mar '09

14 Mar '09

I'm afraid that I am a rookie at dovecot, and cannot seem to figure the configuration for a dual system & virtual setup. For now I am using POP3 ---only--- I've got the "system" working, but cannot figure out how to add the virtual system. The docs aren't quite clear enough for me to understand. The wiki example for dynamic passwd-file locations shows: mail_location = maildir:/home/%d/%n/Maildir userdb passwd-file etc etc I am using mbox, not maildir, AND I've already used mail_location for my system accounts with the following line: mail_location = mbox:~/mail/:INBOX=/mail/%u In the case of my virtual users, the mail is stored in INBOX=/mail/VIRTUAL/%d/%u and the password file is stored in /exim/etc/VIRTUAL/%d/passwd would someone kindly help me with this? thanks!

[Dovecot] pam_authenticate() failed: authentication error
by Zbigniew Szalbot 14 Mar '09

14 Mar '09

Hello, I would like to ask for your help. I have noticed some error messages issued by dovecot. Mar 13 20:00:57 relay dovecot: auth-worker(default): pam(example(a)example.com): pam_authenticate() failed: authentication error (/etc/pam.d/dovecot missing?) Not surprisingly $ l /etc/pam.d/dovecot ls: /etc/pam.d/dovecot: No such file or directory The funny thing is that authentication does work but I guess I have something misconfigured. I'd appreciate if you could help me. I am on a FreeBSD system (7.0) if that matters. Thank you! -- Zbigniew Szalbot

Hi, all. I use dovecot-1.1.11 with OpenLDAP backend. but i found the mail_location is not correct. How can i override mail_location setting in dovecot.conf? If so, I think the behavior is correct. Maybe change the query to: where username = '%n' and (domain = '%d' or ('%d' = '' and domain is null)) And change all the domain='' to domain=NULL.

[Dovecot] New to list, got a quota question
by Vlad Sedov 14 Mar '09

14 Mar '09

Hello folks - I'm running dovecot on top of qmail/vpopmail/mysql, serving up about 2500 mailboxes. Everything is running very smooth and fast.... I recently upgraded dovecot to 1.1, so I'm trying to implement some extra features like IMAP quotas. I'm using the sql passdb, with the following config: driver = mysql connect = host=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock user=username password=password dbname=vpopmail default_pass_scheme = PLAIN password_query = SELECT CONCAT(pw_name, '@', pw_domain) AS user, pw_clear_passwd AS password FROM vpopmail WHERE pw_name = '%n' AND pw_domain = '%d' user_query = SELECT pw_dir as home, 508 AS uid, 503 AS gid FROM vpopmail WHERE pw_name = '%n' AND pw_domain = '%d' My vpopmail installation keeps the quota information in the mysql database (pw_shell field) instead of maildirsize. The quota is in maildir format, e.g. 400M or 50331648S. Unlimited quota is specified as NOQUOTA. The question is... Is it possible to make dovecot understand this format and get it directly from SQL (via user_query, for example) or would it be easier to reconfigure the vpopmail installation somehow to use maildirsize? Thanks! Vlad

[Dovecot] how to handle CA CRL updates with client certificate verification context ?
by Raphael PRECIGOUT 13 Mar '09

13 Mar '09

Hello, As far as I can read in the Dovecot SSL configuration wiki page, each CA cert must be followed by the related CA CRL in the client certificate verification context ("ssl_ca_file" setting). In my company we do have our own PKI and as soon as Client certificate is compromised we do revoke it and update the related CA's CRL. Does that mean that I have to issue a new "ssl_ca_file" file as soon as our issuing CA CRL is updated ? If yes, does someone has an idea on how to do so ? Is it then necessary to restart dovecot process (to take the "ssl_ca_file" file changes into account) ? Does Dovecot have a way to check the issuing CA CRL automatically ? (the CRL is published in DER format and is accessible though http, the URI is mentionned in the CRL Distribution points of the CA certificate) Thanks in advance for your help. Regards, Raphael

[Dovecot] Problem with sasl auth with postfix...
by Douglas M. Stanley 13 Mar '09

13 Mar '09

Hello list, I'm running into some problems, and I couldn't find any info about this anywhere on the net. I recently set up a new debian lenny machine, and used my notes from the last debian etch machine I set up, which basically is for postfix + dovecot for sasl auth. On my old etch box, in the dovecot.conf, in the auth default section, I have a socket listen { client { path = /var/spool/postfix/private/auth mode = 0660 user = postfix group = postfix } } However, if I use the same config on my lenny setup, dovecot fails to start, and I see this in my logs: Mar 13 19:16:30 mailserver dovecot: Dovecot v1.0.15 starting up Mar 13 19:16:30 mailserver dovecot: auth(default): User doesn't exist: postfix Mar 13 19:16:30 mailserver dovecot: Auth process died too early - shutting down Mar 13 19:16:30 mailserver dovecot: child 4623 (auth) returned error 89 Now if I comment out the user and group lines, it works fine, but the socket is owned by root, and so I have to change the mode line so that it's world readable in order for postfix to use it. The version of dovecot in etch is: 1.0.rc15-2etch4 and the version in lenny is: 1.0.15-2.3 Any ideas why this might be happening? Did the syntax to do this change between those versions? Any input? I guess I don't mind leaving it world readable, but I wasted an entire morning trying everything to get it to work, so I guess I'm hoping some one atleast has an answer as to why it doesn't work. Thanks, Doug

[Dovecot] Using LDAP for Dovecot extra/regular fields
by Jack Stewart 13 Mar '09

13 Mar '09

Hi, We're moving to a dovecot proxy / server configuration in order to make sure that a users go to a specific server. If someone has used these LDAP for this, there are a few things that I wish to verify. Dovecot does not verify that type of the LDAP attribute, only that the returned value works. If a boolean is used for a yes/no field, then FALSE sets the field to no and TRUE sets the field to yes. If a multivalue attribute is used for a single value field, the last returned value for the LDAP lookup is used in that field (i.e. host will use the last value). If a string attribute is returned for a yes/no field and has any value, then the associated field is set to true. There is no automatic failover with the host field so if the remote host is down, the IMAP connection no longer works. I'm fairly sure of all of these except for the boolean. Now this is just due diligence. I don't know that turning on/off or switching LDAP attributes is the right way to go to handle failover but it might work for phased rollout. My feeling is the best configuration will be using a secondary IP address that has to be manually turned on for a host after a reboot or shutdown. This creates a poor mans "fencing". The secondary can either be brought up on another host or handled via a load balance with DSR/backup server. As a practical matter, it is probably worth setting sensible attributes for each field (i.e. numeric for host, boolean for proxy/proxy_maybe etc). Any interest in registering an LDAP object class for dovecot? ---Jack

[Dovecot] Maildir dirty syncs
by Timo Sirainen 13 Mar '09

13 Mar '09

http://dovecot.org/patches/1.1/maildir-dirty-syncs.diff This patch adds a new maildir_very_dirty_syncs setting. If set to "yes", Dovecot assumes it's the only one changing the cur/ directory (so other MDAs can add mails to new/ without problems). This makes it possible to avoid rescanning the cur/ directory all the time looking for filenames. It also looks like (in stress testing) it still scans the cur/ directory unneededly in some situations, but it shouldn't be common. Maybe I'll look into it some day to see why. I'd be interested in hearing how large performance benefits it gives, if any. If they're big I could consider adding it to v1.1.12. If they're pretty much irrelevant I probably won't even bother adding the code to v1.2. I guess you mainly see the performance benefits with large/huge mailboxes.

[Dovecot] General approach question - am I doing this the right way?
by Alan Bates 13 Mar '09

13 Mar '09

Quick outline of my current working setup: I'm running dovecot 1.0.5 as an IMAP mail server on my ubuntu home server, which i connect to with my phone and several other machines to check my mail etc. i use getmail to collect mail from my various pop accounts. getmail filters the mail using spamassassin via a Filter_external, before moving it to my Maildir on the home server. Then when I connect to the home server from my various machines, IMAP manages the status of all the mail, so unread messages are common etc. All works very nicely. However I'd like to fix a minor annoyance... ...Spamassassin marks mail as SPAM but the mail client has to do the job of moving it to the Junk folder. I'd like the mail to be filtered on the home server on receipt. Am I just making things really complicated for myself? Is there a simpler setup for what I'm trying to do? Thanks in advance for any thoughts or suggestions

[Dovecot] Extremely custom mailbox locations
by Steve Kemp 13 Mar '09

13 Mar '09

I'm in the position where I'd like to offer IMAP access to a collection of email accounts which are stored in a very odd manner. Files are stored as: /blah/$dd-$mm-$yy/$domain/1234/1234 For example: /reject/12-3-2009/cvsrepository.org/35199/35199639 There is a single file for each mail, which I guess technically probably counts as an mbox folder, but only just. I can handle the custom login requirements I have, but I see no obvious way to create a mailstore from this information unless I build up a parallel symlink farm, such as: /imap/cvsrepository.org/{new cur tmp} I suspect if I fill cur/ with symlinks to each of the individual messages things will mostly work out OK, but I wonder if that is the best solution, or if there is a slim chance that I could serve this hierarchy without the intermediate step? [Dovecot] which architecture to use?

Dear List, Based on the following installed environment: - OpenBSD (latest version!) - PostgreSQL - dovecot with SSL would like to have a mail server which accepts system as well as virtual users and being able to connect to their mailboxes either via an MUA (Thunderbird etc.) or a web interface (squirrel mail?). When using the web interface, non registered users should be able to creat e-mail accounts which will be dovecot virtual users! Which components should I use? Thanks

[Dovecot] 1.1.12 release candidate
by Timo Sirainen 13 Mar '09

13 Mar '09

http://dovecot.org/tmp/dovecot-1.1.12.rc.tar.gz I would have already released 1.1.12, but it needed the MAILBOXDIR change described below, and I'm slightly worried that it might have broken some special setup. So please test first and I'll release in v1.1.12 then in a few days. * Added :MAILBOXDIR= to mail_location to specify the root dir for mailboxes. dbox users should migrate to ":MAILBOXDIR=mailboxes", because that's going to be the default in v1.2+.

[Dovecot] Imap logout message on Dovecot restart
by RutgerM 12 Mar '09

12 Mar '09

I'm trying to receive a "Disconnected" message in my logfile for the connected imap-clients when I restart dovecot. When you disconnect a client, you receive the following message in your log: Mar 12 21:45:55 mail dovecot: IMAP(mailbox(a)domain.com): Disconnected: Logged out bytes=7496/22441 When a IMAP client is connected and Dovecot is restarted, this message is not shown. This should be solvable by a script like this: #!/bin/sh unset LOG_TO_MASTER export USE_SYSLOG=1 exec /usr/lib/dovecot/imap But this logs the user that runs the script into the imap server and when I terminate this terminal I get a "Disconnected" message for the local linux user, which I don't need of course. Is there a way to get to what I want ? I want to log my IMAP statics for every day and I need to "disconnect" my imap clients for it in some way to receive the Disconnected message and count from there. Thanks.

[Dovecot] High load/corrupted indexes after moving mailboxes?
by Patrick A. Treptau 12 Mar '09

12 Mar '09

Hello, we're experiencing an odd issue after combining two vDisks used for mail storage into one big new LVM. We've done this in the past successfully and didn't experience a lot of problems. We stopped all services (dovecot/postfix) to ensure that mailbox contents (Maildir) will not be changed, rsynch'ed the mail to the new disks and restarted everything. When we restarted dovecot, we noticed a huge spike in load (average load in top and high cpu iowait) and isolated dovecot as the issue. At some point, the average load crept up to over 100 and crashed the server twice. However, over time the average load and cpu wait times went down slightly. I have noticed a spike in load after moving user's mail storage, but not like this. It almost looks like everyone is either re-indexing or re-caching their mail? Any help would be appreciated. We're on dovecot 0.99. -Pat

[Dovecot] migration from dovecot to dovecot on different servers without downtime (dovecot replication?)
by Pau Oliva 12 Mar '09

12 Mar '09

Hello, I have an imap server with huge Maildirs and several users running dovecot 1.0.13, I need to migrate all the imap accounts to a new box which runs dovecot 1.1.4. The requisite is that need to do it with no downtime or minimal downtime possible, and totally transparent for end users. I have tried IMAP<-->IMAP syncing using a master user in both servers and imapsync, however due to the huge Maildirs (some users have more than 10 years of mail) this tends to be quite slow and painful. Can I tar all the user's Maildir and move them from one box to the other, and then run imapsync again? which I assume that would be faster... or is there any better solution I am not aware of? (ie: I've seen some emails about dovecot replication on the list archives, but few details of how that should be configured). I'd appreciate any feedback or thoughts on this matter. Thank you. Cheers, Pau Oliva

[Dovecot] GUI/WUI for creating (common) sieve scripts?
by Roderick A. Anderson 11 Mar '09

11 Mar '09

Anyone aware of a Web User Interface or GUI to allow users to create simple/common-type sieve scripts? I found the sieve testing and have used it as I play; plus mangesieve (and Net:ManageSieve.pm) but want to allow users to build so some clicking and maybe a little typing and then end up with some filters. So before I go invent this wheel I'd like to know what others are doing? TIA, Rod --

[Dovecot] [Fwd: Re: [vchkpw] vpopmail now has vusage daemon support]

Is the index modification code portable that other software could link to a Dovecot library and update indexes on delivery? <snip from vpopmail list> Rick Romero wrote: > I was considering changing vdelivermail to have a stdout option, where > you could pipe from vdelivermail to Dovecot's deliver for 'final' > delivery instead of direct to Maildir within your .qmail-default file. > That 'should' allow everything else to occur normally, but get those > indexes updated as well. [Dovecot] Error crosscompiling
by Diego Roversi 10 Mar '09

Hi, I was trying to crosscompile dovecot, but I got some error: --with-notify=inotify don't work, as it try to run a test program to verify if inotify is supported in the building platform. Solved with --with-notify=dnotify. Ihmo, is more a hack than a solution. | checking whether posix_fallocate() works... configure: error: cannot run test program while cross compiling I can't find an a suitable option for this error. Again the problem is that configure can't run an executable for a different platform. It's possible to set a safe default? [Dovecot] Random timeouts on mailboxes
by Bastien Semene 10 Mar '09

10 Mar '09

Hello, My dovecot server is currently having random issues when users want to acces their mailbox. When the issue is occuring there's a timeout. It's random because it happens more or less often and is not dependent on a user or the way their check the mailbox. The time during the problem occurs is random, sometimes it's less than a minute, sometimes it's some hours. When a user can't connect to its mailbox, he generally can receive its emails through his BlackBerry (it's just to illustrate the fact that it doesn't seem to be linked to an account). When this issue occurs they can't receive the headers from any folder (INBOX, custom, sent, ...) and can't read mails that headers are known by the mail client. When there's timeout, users can send emails (same jail and with an error when the client want to write a copy in the sentbox) and use the calendar server for example (on the same machine). Dovecot is running on a FreeBSD 7.0 32bits, 4GB RAM, Intel Xeon QuadCore @ 1.86 Ghz, and 3*500Gb SATA-2 RAID-5 disks. The box is hosting jails, and the mail jails ( imap + smtp, clamav + spamassassin ). The mail jails are new (since August 2008) but worked great since the beginning of this year. The server is hosting 122 accounts currently. My first thought was that there's an I/O issue, the disks are maybe too busy or there's paging that result in a timeout. I check it through vmstat an top commands but nothing appears, there's always some memory free (between 90-300 MB) and a very little paging, generally around 1MB. The fault are under a hundred and when, few times, it has more than a hundred (generally under 200) the next snapshot is under 100. I set the screen/line to refresh every 5 seconds. I shutdowned all jails not directly related to the mail service but the problem still occured. I also separated clamav and spamassassin from imap and smtp to a different box. After that I checked the dovecot config to lighten it, and ( only ) disabled fsync. I upgraded the RAM, added memory is used, but nothing changed. The human resources are constantly changing here, we were more before the problem started than now (around 10-15%), to illustrate the fact that I don't think it is linked to the number of users. I tried to recreate some accounts having the issue, but the problem appeared again. I upgraded Dovecot Friday to 1.1.11 from 1.1.7 (The installation was before 1.1.7, I did an upgrade some times ago). I used a command script to log Thunderbird's IMAP activity, everything is fine but there's no timestamp in the logs. So I'm only sure now this is not an erroneous packet/info sent problem. I watched the TB doc ( http://www.mozilla.org/projects/nspr/reference/html/prlog.html#25306 ) but there's no directive to put a timestamp for each line of log. The network is fine. I tried different configuration to be sure a device isn't doing something weird. Now, I don't know what to check to identify the issue. If anyone has any idea I didn't wrote here, or if I did erroneous interpretation(s) from the datas, I'll be glad to know. Regards, -- Bastien Semene Administrateur Réseau & Système

[Dovecot] I'm the beginner and I want some help

Hello, I'm a software programmer and I work for a software corporation. We worked on dovecot for a while. We want to add some new functions to dovecot. For example, the mail stored on Mail-Server is plaintext, so we want to make it encrypted. As the documentation was not too much, and read the source code was too difficult for em. Would you give me some advice if I make this specialty as a plugin? Thank you! WD David from China.

Re: [Dovecot] Random timeouts on mailboxes
by listacc＠gmx.de 09 Mar '09

09 Mar '09

Hi Bastien, just a little thought because I had an issue like this (but with cyrus): Where is your thunderbird installation stored? In my case, it was not locally but on some windows mapped drive, and so also the imap cache of thunderbird was on this drive. Because we have a lot of mails in our accounts, the cache was about 50-100MB for some users, and users with a lot mail accounts had very often timeouts. This was due to performance problems on our network storage. Sometimes it also works to delete thunderbird´s cache files. Then it has to download all the headers again (bad with bad performing network storage :-/), but it seems that these cache files get corrupted from time to time and this also produces timeouts. kind regards Andreas -- Computer Bild Tarifsieger! [Dovecot] Dovecot and Pipermail integration
by Ricardo Ramirez 09 Mar '09

09 Mar '09

Hello, I have a standard Mailman/Pipermail install with mboxes at MM_HOME/archives/public/listname.mbox/listname.box What's the best way to export these via IMAP using Dovecot 1.0rc15 on Debian etch? I know I could make a namespace with MM_HOME/archives/public/ but that would result in half of the directories being exported (the ones containing the HTML archives) being unusable. I could also create another directory and symlink all the mboxes in there but that seems wrong. Preferably, I'd like to have something like a namespace with a mail location of MM_HOME/archives/public/*.mbox/ but that doesn't work with v1.0 Ricardo
