For example, the mail stored on Mail-Server is plaintext, so we want to make it encrypted. As the documentation was not too much, and read the source code was too difficult for em. Hi Bastien, just a little thought because I had an issue like this (but with cyrus): Where is your thunderbird installation stored? In my case, it was not locally but on some windows mapped drive, and so also the imap cache of thunderbird was on this drive. Because we have a lot of mails in our accounts, the cache was about 50-100MB for some users, and users with a lot mail accounts had very often timeouts. This was due to performance problems on our network storage. Sometimes it also works to delete thunderbird´s cache files. Then it has to download all the headers again (bad with bad performing network storage :-/), but it seems that these cache files get corrupted from time to time and this also produces timeouts. kind regards Andreas -- Computer Bild Tarifsieger! Hello, I use dovecot with a LDAP backend for user account and aliases. The aliases are objects of the class couriermailalias. Some users would like to use the alias address as POP/IMAP login instead of the 'true' account. Is this possible?. I am using dovecot version 1.0,10, from ubuntu hardy packages. Hello, I have a standard Mailman/Pipermail install with mboxes at MM_HOME/archives/public/listname.mbox/listname.box What's the best way to export these via IMAP using Dovecot 1.0rc15 on Debian etch? I know I could make a namespace with MM_HOME/archives/public/ but that would result in half of the directories being exported (the ones containing the HTML archives) being unusable. I could also create another directory and symlink all the mboxes in there but that seems wrong. Preferably, I'd like to have something like a namespace with a mail location of MM_HOME/archives/public/*.mbox/ but that doesn't work with v1.0 Ricardo

[Dovecot] system & virtual setup

No one replied to my original email, and I was hoping if I re-phrase my question I can get an answer. I would like dovecot to provide system email (located at /mail/%u with system password and /home/%u) and also virtual email (/u/mail/VIRTUAL/%d/%u with password found at /u/exim/etc/VIRTUAL/%d/passwd). NO home space, but I would consider /home/%d/%u This I think has something to do with namespace, but the docs are too vague for me to understand. Can anyone help me out? I would very much appreciate it. I would even consider PAYING someone to set me straight. I am looking to migrate away from vm-pop3d. initially with POP3 and ultimately into IMAP. Thanks!

The expire configuration in the example config file in 1.1.11 is broken: root@omega:/etc/dovecot# /etc/init.d/dovecot restart Restarting IMAP/POP3 mail server: dovecot Unknown dict module: db expire plugin: dict_init() failed Error: imap dump-capability process returned 89 Fatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf failed! It's inconsistent with the documentation at http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Expire, so I've made the attached patch to try and fix it. Note: I don't know if this new configuration is correct either, because its a new box and I've not got any mails old enough to cause the plugin to try and write anything, but at least I can start dovecot like this. :) Regards, Rob

How is verbose_proctitle supposed to work? I set it in the config but I don't see anything particularly verbose while the mailbox is connected. How does IMAP lock the /var/spool/mail/user file? Here's my problem: I'm writing a script to expire old or oversize mail through a series of archive folders. I don't want to take the whole server down to do this, nor does it seem like I would have to lock the user out entirely if I can manage to emulate the locks correctly. I am able to lock /var/spool/mail/user (and ~user/mail/*) from procmail, dovecot popmail, and openwebmail using dotlocks. What do I do to prevent dovecot imap from writing the spool and various mbox files while my script is running? Just posix fcntl on the various files? I'm trying to use Mail::Box in perl which I'm having some problems with, corresponding with the developer, but if anyone has any easy way out I would appreciate the advice very much! Mark

Hello, We're having a problem in Dovecot 1.1.8 with a failed assertion on certain mbox format mailboxes. It happens both with deliver when it attempts to delier to the mailbox, and with IMAP connections for the affected box (though I'm not sure what they're doing at the time). The IMAP client is Squirrel Mail, but as I said, the assertion occurs with deliver as well. Apparently, moving the inbox out of the way fixed the problem for a while, but then it came back. Clearing out the dovecot index files seemed not to have any effect. Hello, It has been brought to my attention that outlook users cant delete folders from their mailbox. They can move them around and erase emails, but when it comes to folders, they cant.. [Dovecot] set \Seen flag on mail

I'm looking for a way to set the \Seen flag on certain mail no matter what. Currently I'm using a global sieve script to do this. From what I've read, there is no way to enforce the global script if the user creates their own sieve script. More details: I have a postfix transport that along with sender_bcc_maps and recipient_bcc_maps uses deliver to create a read only archive of user's mail. The mail intended to be archived is stored in a per user imap folder called "Archives" that uses the ACL plugin to make the messages there read only. In addition to that, I want the mail marked as \Seen upon delivery so that user's who subscribe to the Arhives folder don't see new mail indications and what not when mail is delivered there. Is there a better way to set the \Seen flag other than the global sieve script since it can be overridden by the user? -- J.P. Trosclair

Hello List, I want to allow plain text passwords only on ssl/tls. Is it possible to have: auth default { mechanisms = cram-md5 ntlm ...... } and then over-ride this when connection is ssl/tls to allow plain and login? I have tried adding "mechanisms = plain login cram-md5 ntlm" to "protocol imaps{}" as an example but I get an error that the protocol does not exist. I read somewhere today that dovecot enables plain automatically over secure connections (ssl/tls) but I'm not seeing it. Also, "auth default" suggests that "auth something_else" is possible. I'm probably just doing a poor job of research but I'm not finding the answers I'm seeking. I have to make dotlock work because this openwebmail thing only supports one of dotlock or flock, but procmail delivery does dotlock and fcntl. procmail correctly creates a dotlock file in /var/spool/mail/username.lock when delivering, I can watch this with `while :; do ls -la | grep lock; done`. It works fine when lock_method=fcntl, but no dotlock file shows up in /var/spool/mail. mbox_write_locks are working correctly with mbox_write_locks = dotlock fcntl, the dotlock file shows up in the user's mail directory. [Dovecot] GSSAPI cross-realm still broken

I've been trying to track down some problems with Dovecot in a Kerberos 5 cross-realm environment, and there seem to be a few issues. LOGIN/PLAIN work fine using pam_krb5, but GSSAPI is a bit harder to handle. On line 436 of src/auth/mech-gssapi.c, the authn_name and the authz_name are compared using gss_compare_name. This dates back to the message at: http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2005-October/009615.html While everything within that message is true, as things stand, Dovecot is unusable in a cross-realm environment. When cross-realm tickets are used, the authn_name is "username@REALM" and the authz_name is "username" (or vice versa, I don't remember). The attached patch causes dovecot to display these two values in human-readable format to illustrate the issue. Because these two GSS names differ, Dovecot refuses to allow access in spite of the fact that krb5_kuserok would return TRUE. I am not the only one to have noticed this problem: http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2007-July/023868.html http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2007-October/026027.html Might I suggest that some more robust security checking be done instead of abusing gss_compare_name like this? I don't know how to do this using GSSAPI, but on the Kerberos side Heimdal provides the function krb5_kuserok. Basically from what I can tell, phps imap libraries or whatever dont support setting custom keywords. So I am wondering if someone has a library or script that can take a username, domain, password, folder, uid and flag to set so that my webmail app can call this to set imap keywords. So far my google searching isnt turning up anything, but searching for the word keyword doesnt really help.

Hi, During discussions with the boss we've speculated about having users having only specific services available. One of the ideas was to have users being able to specify if they wanted POP3 or IMAP and whether we could limit their access to one or the other server side. We use MySQL for the userdb and passdb lookups at the moment. Is it possible to specify separate auth files with different MySQL lookups per protocol? We've been using an imap(s) dovecot server for a while on an ubuntu 8.04.2 and we noted that tags set by thunderbird ("important", "to do", etc.) are almost always lost, i.e., when connecting to the same imap account from another machine, the tags are not there anymore... this always happens for the Inbox, and seldomly for other imap folders... anyone else experiencing this? [Dovecot] Maildir format use question

Hey all, I've got a couple servers using Maildir format. As I understand it from a simple perspective, 'new' contains newly delivered messages, and 'cur' contains messages that have been 'handled'. I like to keep things simple for users, so rather than have 'Spam', 'Junk' 'ToLearn' and other possibly confusing folders, what I thought I would do is scan their .Spam/cur folder for mail that was older than an hour (based on file atime(?) stamp) and feed that through SpamAssassin. The idea being that anything in 'cur' would: 1. have been moved there by the user. 2. be recently read, and I think if it were innocent, would be handled within an hour 3. Not contain newly delivered, unread mail. This is actually what I see when I view my Spam folder through Evolution. If I use a PHP webclient - either Horde or Roundcube (I've captured the debugs if you'd like them), then a simple view of the Spam folder causes the files to be moved from new/ to cur/. They are updated with the :2, - but since nothing was actually done, no flags are added. So I'm left with a quandry. I guess the simple question is, Should mail in cur, EVER not have a flag? I suppose if it were marked as UNSEEN after being SEEN, that's possible. So I just answered myself there :) Is it possible to have Dovecot NOT move a file from new/ to cur/ until a flag has been assigned to the mail? Just from a, possible, performance standpoint - it seems when accessing an INBOX from a PHP webmail system with MANY new mails, there is an unnecessary(?) mass move of these files to another folder. Thoughts? Rick

I'm using Dovecot with Postfix as my MTA I need to set up forwarding with Dovecot. I create a .forward file in my user's home directory, and in the .forward file I put destination_email_address email(a)example.com. Well, it got delivered to the forwarded email just fine. But the sender also got an undeliverable email from the dovecot mailbox and a copy was not saved in the dovecot mailbox. I need emails forwarded, and a copy saved in the dovecot mailbox. What options are available for remote storage, i.e. storage devices directly mounted on the machine running Dovecot? I've seen discussions of NFS usage - but my experiences with NFS in times past have been poor. CIFS has worked well for me for non-mail use - would this be suitable? I'm throwing an error compiling with a custom-compiled gcc 3.2.3 on one box. The configuration string is CC=/usr/local/gcc3.2.3/bin/gcc CPPFLAGS=-I/usr/local/ssl/include LDFLAGS=-L/usr/local/ssl/lib ./configure --with-ssl=openssl --with-ssldir=/usr/local/ssl/certs --with-pam --with-pop3d --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var I've used this to compile on other older boxes with success. And I compared the command lines and they are identical. This is the error I get with src/master/main.c main.c:365:1: directives may not be used inside a macro argument main.c:364:16: unterminated argument list invoking macro "printf" main.c: In function `print_build_options': main.c:372: syntax error before string constant Changing the function to a simpler function without the ifdef's resolves the issue and dovecot compiles. I would really like to know why two boxes with the same compiler are failing on one but not the other. Perhaps there's some program or library or preprocessor or path or something out of whack. Especially since using gcc 2.96 on the same box works! Hello, Im using Ubuntu 8.10 with Dovecot 1.0.10. I am using passwd files, not a MySQL database. I have 2 files, a "users" file, and a "passwd" file. I have added: allow_nets=10.1.10.1 to the end of a specific users entry in the users file. When that user tries to login, I get the following in the logs: dovecot: 2009-02-28 09:06:59 Error: IMAP(bob(a)mydomain.com): Ambiguous mail location setting, don't know what to do with it: allow_nets=10.1.10.1 (try prefixing it with mbox: or maildir:) dovecot: 2009-02-28 09:06:59 Error: IMAP(boo(a)mydomain.com): Mail storage creation failed with mail_location: allow_nets=10.1.10.1 dovecot: 2009-02-28 09:06:59 Error: child 4174 (imap) returned error 89 here is the line from my users file: bob@mydomain.com::5000:5000::/home/vmail/ mydomain.com/:/bin/false::allow_nets=10.1.10.1 here is the corresponding line from the passwd file: bob@oldschoolpunk.com:$1$evcHgrbC$BuyQRCspMzTpD8zkphxo0/ My goal is, that I want to allow this user to check email ONLY from the IP specified (i.e. 10.1.10.1) I just can't seem to get this working... [Dovecot] Custom flags in v1.0.15

Hello all, I'm having problems with setting custom flags on a dovecot imap setup, with mbox mail store. I was running v1.0rc15 on a Debian Etch box, upgraded recently to v1.0.15, but nothing changed. The problem : I read my mail using IMAP. In Thunderbird (various versions, current one being v2.0.0.19), I can set various message flags (Important, Personal, Work, ... mapped to IMAP as $Label4,$ $Label3, $Label2, ...). I read my mail from several machines, but all changes made on the message flags from one machine won't appear on the others !? Still I've read that those flags are supported in Dovecot. Actually, I logged the IMAP traffic, and saw that Dovecot claims to "handle" them. For instance, I added a flag to a message : Thunderbird > 621 uid store 35150 +FLAGS ($label4) Dovecot > * 6716 FETCH (UID 35150 FLAGS (\Seen \Recent $Label4)) Now, if I close TB, so that changes are written to the mbox file, and if I open that file on a the server with any text editor, the 'X-Keywords' line doesn't appear !? And as a matter of a fact, if I read my mail from any other machine, the flag isn't set ! Anyone knows where the problem can be ? Do I need to upgrade to v1.1 ? Or are custom flags actually supported in v1.0 (which I believe is the case) ? I browsed through the internet and searched the archives of this mailing list but didn't find any clue ... I have dovecot and postfix set up on debian lenny. Squirrelmail is used to access the mail. I put a .forward file in my user's home directory, and that sure gets the job done of forwarding email, but I need a copy saved on the local machine as well. How do I do that?

Thanx to everybody's help , i have got a working combination of; - dovecot LDA - smtp auth thru dovecot sasl - postfix - virtual users in mysql - postfixadmin - thunderbird as the email client Just 2 additional questions - A. Sieve .............. With the imap filters in thunderbird, do i need to use sieve in dovecot? my initial observations/ findings say "no"? B. Quota ............. If i have not set quota in dovecot or postfix ( no quota related configuration ), may i then assume, the users have "unlimited storage" , limited only by the hardware/filesystem? I would like to have this feature ( just like unlimited storage in yahoo ) and just have a cron script running regularly to delete old emails ( for middle level, low level users ). Hi, Here's the scenario. I want to set up a mailbox so that when mail sent to the address is piped to a processing application, instead of going to a mailbox. One way I can do this is to set up a mailbox and then have an application that checks to see if there's mail and then processes it. (Old school Unix script) Is there a way to set it up with dovecot? Hello, I have a Debian machine that is virtual-hosting 6 domains with exim4. I finally got exim4 working well enough where I can send and receive mail using the mail command on my machine. I would eventually like to have SquirrelMail (which requires IMAP) working on my website. For whatever reason, exim4 doesn't seem to support IMAP. I found out that Dovecot is a prominent IMAP server. So I installed the most current Dovecot package (1.0.rc15) in Debian. Something is broken though... As I log into SquirrelMail, I get an error message "Error connecting to IMAP server: localhost. 111 : Connection refused". To investigate, I decided to telnet localhost on port 143 and found out that yes, the connection is in fact refused. So what do I need to do in order to have dovecot listen on port 143? Also, I noticed when I restart dovecot... debian:/etc/dovecot# /etc/init.d/dovecot restart Restarting mail server: dovecotError: Can't use mail executable /usr/lib/dovecot/imap: No such file or directory I hope this isn't a serious problem. Hi list I am just experimenting with seting up my own email server. I want some tips and hints on how to secure my setup to prevent unauthorised assess to my email. I have read through the wiki and have not found many tips. I hope to improve the wiki with tips gathered from the emailing list. :-) A basic measurement I could take right now would be to set more secure file premissions on my setup. I came up with this trick That is Since my previous mail server had a bunch of complex procmail recipies and I am not sure that I can turn them into sieve scripts I am calling dovecot deliver to drop mail in it's final $DEFAULT destination. :0 | /some/path/dovecot/deliver in order to update the index, control files etc upon delivery time. So far in my "tests" it works. But I wonder if this is wise or not. Regards, Harry.

[Dovecot] OT: Fixing Messages To Be RFC 2822 Compliant

So....apparently I have some messages which are not RFC compliant sitting in my mailboxes (mostly older ones), and I have some software which is refusing to handle such messages. 1. Does anyone know of a nice way to verify that all my messages are compliant/find those that aren't? (I suppose I could use the existing failing software, but I was hoping for something a little more robust...) 2. Does anyone know of any tools that will do The Right Thing as far as fixing these messages are concerned? Googling didn't turn up much for me, but maybe I wasn't hitting the right terms ("RFC message repair", "fix email message", etc.). Thanks.

[Dovecot] Dovecot as a email storage system

I was thinking about all the old email I have and don't want to get rid of and how much space it is taking on my mail server. The idea came to me to install Dovecot on a server at home then I could drop mail into I want to save. It doesn't need to receive mail except what that is moved to it. Anyone see problems with doing this? Thanks, Rod --

[Dovecot] email stuck in outbox

Can anyone here help me out with a client side Outlook issue? I know outlook is a horrible imap client :( We intermittently have a problem where mail gets "stuck" in Outlook users' outboxes. Might have anything to do with dovecot? Is there anyway I can troubleshoot this server side? Are there any settings I can tweak? We have a new and an old dovecot server (see below) and both exhibit the same behavior (occasionally) for heavy mail users. We haven't ruled out a layer 2 issue but nor have we found one.... If anyone has any ideas (other than suggesting a different email client), they'd be much appreciated. [Dovecot] Broken dovecot-uidlist files

I have just upgraded to 1.1.8, hoping to fix these types of errors: Jan 20 10:39:27 laura deliver(xxxxxx(a)example.net): Broken file /srv/storage/mail/store/net/example/xx/xxxxxx/Maildir/dovecot-uidlist line 156: Invalid data: Jan 20 10:41:19 laura dovecot: POP3(yy.yy(a)example.at): Broken file /srv/storage/mail/store/at/example/yy.yy/Maildir/dovecot-uidlist line 2: Invalid data: Unfortunately, they still pop up. Since I suspect these errors to be responsible for customers complaining about downloading mails twice, I'd like to fix them. Our setup has multiple servers sharing the same NFS-mounted directory for maildirs and indexes; we have set mmap_disable = yes dotlock_use_excl = yes fsync_disable = no mail_nfs_index = yes lock_method = fcntl As far as I can tell, for at least one of these errors, there was no concurrent access to the mailbox in question. What can I do to solve this problem, or to analyze it further? Ulrich

This is with respect to an error that I am facing in dovecot. The error is that is seen in logs is "Feb 23 00:04:46 mailblade1 dovecot: IMAP(USERNAME): /indexes/USERNAME/.INBOX/dovecot-uidlist: Duplicate file entry at line 7: 1234776125.M559298P3988.s2o.qlc.co.in,S=13111,W=13470:2, (uid 94277 -> 97805)" This error is seen for multiple users. Once this error occurs for a user, the user downloads mails all over again in POP3. Please help! And let us know what can be done. Details of our setup ---------------------- The setup has deployed 2 servers with Dovecot using the same storage over NFS with the following options: * Dovecot Version: v1.1.8 on both servers * Server1 for retrieving mails using POP and imap Access * Server2 for Mail Delivery via postfix and dovecot as LDA * Number of users: 20000 * Number of mails Handled: 500K per day --Note: Based on recommendation, kernel was upgraded from 2.6.18 (- see below for details) and yet the issue persists. Guys , 1. What is the benefit of using Dovecot' LDA as compared to postfix's LDA? Will there be better performance? And along the same vein, 2. What is the benefit of using Dovecot's SASL as compared to Cyrus SASL? Is there better performance? 3. [Dovecot] pkgsrc-ing sieve and managesieve

I'm trying to integrate both the new sieve implementation and managesieve into pkgsrc. Managesieve seems to need some dovecot libraries that dovecot doesn't install (lib-storage/libstorage.a, lib-auth/libauth.a, lib-imap/libimap.a, lib-index/libindex.a, lib-mail/libmail.a, lib-charset/libcharset.a, lib-dict/libdict.a and lib-charset/libcharset.a). There seems to be no provision in pkgsrc for the build of a package needing the work directory of the build of another package. Would it make sense for dovecot to install those libraries?

I'm not sure what it is I'm doing wrong here, perhaps my 'test' mail is not in the format expected by sieve-test. The 'test' file is a file taken directly from a dovecot maildir - so is in the normal format of having headers, a new line, then the body. There is nothing exceptional about this email. Hello all. I use dovecot in combination with postfix, postfixadmin for virtual users. Deliver to the mailbox now is done by postfix Now i want to enable quota's and therefor i need dovecot deliver. Can i just switch to dovecot deliver? [Dovecot] IMAP ACLs and global ACLs in v1.2

I just committed code for IMAP ACL support based on the code from Kolab people. I did quite large changes though. I also changed how global ACLs are handled. Previously local ACLs could override global ACLs, but now that users are able to modify the ACLs I think it should be the other way around. From what I've heard global ACLs are typically added for things like 1) disallowing user from doing something in specific mailboxes such as expunge messages, 2) giving a specific master user access to some mailboxes ONLY, such as voicemail. For 1) case a user really shouldn't be able to grant himself privileges back but still should be able to share the mailbox to others (so the global ACL should have 'a' privilege). For 2) case a user shouldn't be able to remove privileges from the voicemail. So now the user can freely update the local ACLs in whatever way he wants. But in the end if there are any global ACLs, all the local ACLs for those identifiers are ignored. Also local negative identifiers are ignored, so that e.g. global "user=foo lr" can't be disabled by a local "-user=foo lr" ACL. I guess I should update the Wiki ACL page about how exactly the ACLs are applied now that they're well in my memory. :) One thing I'm not really sure about is the "owner" handling. IMAP ACL specifications have no such concept. I think many/most other servers simply add a default ACL for the user name directly. It's a useful concept though, especially with the global ACLs. So currently Dovecot replies: x getacl inbox * ACL "inbox" "owner" lrwstiekxacd x OK Getacl completed. But should it just internally convert "owner" to "username" when replying? But then again if there's a separate rule directly for the "username" it breaks. Do any of the existing ACL-capable IMAP clients want to see the username in the ACL reply or can they handle "owner" just fine? Also what about global ACLs? The current code just lists them twice with local ACLs, which is definitely wrong: x getacl foo * ACL "foo" "xx" w "xx" lr "owner" lrwstiekxacd x OK Getacl completed. Perhaps the global ACLs could have a prefix character? Maybe '#'? Which reminds me, the current dovecot-acl file is mapped to IMAP ACLs like this: dovecot-acl : IMAP ACL - anyone : anyone - authenticated : authenticated - owner : owner - user=name : name - group=name : $name - group-override=name : !$name So all global ACLs would get the # prefix, like #anyone, #name, #!$name. Any thoughts? BTW. Listing shared mailboxes still doesn't work. I guess we'll see tomorrow if I still have energy to get that done.

Hi, I'm using dovecot with a passdb-file . When I login using : test(a)testdomain.com I notice dovecot strips off the domainname and looks up everything in front of the @ in his passdb-file... So I went on to configure the following in my dovecot.conf : auth_username_format = %u@%d restarted dovecot, but he still strips of the @ and the domainname ... I am using Thunderbird 2.x as my client, Dovecot on the server (POP3 not IMAP). Currently I have in my conf file: protocols = pop3s pop3 ssl_disable = no ssl_cert_file = /usr/share/ssl/certs/dovecot.pem ssl_key_file = /usr/share/ssl/private/dovecot.pem ssl_parameters_file = /var/run/dovecot/ssl-parameters.dat disable_plaintext_auth = yes login = pop3 In Thunderbird, I have the email server setup to: - Port 110 - TLS Here's my question: If I change protocols = pop3s pop3 to protocols = pop3s I can no longer connect to my mail server via Thunderbird unless I setup Thunderbird to use SSL. [Dovecot] Problem with v1.1.10

I've been using 1.1.8 successfully but tried out 1.1.10 this morning. I have a combination of system and virtual users. The system users were unaffected by the change, but the virtual users all lost access to their mail because their home directories, as interpreted by dovecot, moved from user@domain to user@user@domain. The location of the home directory is given to dovecot for virtual users using the static db as uid=vmail gid=vmail home=/var/vmail/%u mail=maildir:~/Inboxdir Were there any changes in this area that might have caused the problem? This is a follow-on to the "SQL field format for digest-md5?" thread. After some additional debugging, I've found the problem is a mismatch in what Dovecot expects and Postfix uses for the user and realm. For a username "user(a)example.com" and password "sekret", Dovecot expects: username = "user" realm = "example.com" but Postfix sends the checksum of: username = "user(a)example.com" realm = "" How do I fix this?

[Dovecot] One Dovecot serving 2 domains - possible?

I'm talking about Dovecot 1.0.x, since 1.1.x showed some problems on some of my servers. -- Is it possible to have Dovecot on one machine serving two different domains? How can I set the mailboxes root to one domain to /dir1/ and to the other domain to /dir2/ ? I want all mailboxes from one domain to reside on a different mailbox root. I use Dovecot LDA. I'm using Dovecot 1.1.7 on CentOS 5.2. I've changed my passdb from passwd to pam, it works fine, but I've found this messages on /var/log/secure: dovecot-auth: PAM adding faulty module: /lib64/security/pam_limits.so dovecot-auth: PAM unable to dlopen(/lib64/security/pam_limits.so) dovecot-auth: PAM [error: /lib64/security/pam_limits.so: failed to map segment from shared object: Cannot allocate memory] Latter I realized that my auth_process_size was 64. Changed it to 128 and problem solved. But I suspect that dovecot should not be opening sessions, because there is no session=yes on my passdb configuration. According to the docs: args = dovecot [session=yes] [setcred=yes] [failure_show_msg=yes] [cache_key=<key>] [<service name>] session=yes makes Dovecot open and immediately close PAM session. Some PAM plugins need this to work, such as pam_mkhomedir. I am testing out the new Dovecot 1.2.beta1 software. I am getting reports from people using POP3 that it randomly drops connections. [Dovecot] Maildir with INBOX and other folders at same level

Hello- I have set up Dovecot before and feel fairly comfortable with it but am having some issues with a new setup and have not been able to find a solution via Google or the list archives. I use offlineiimap to sync an IMAP account with an email provider. After the sync is complete, my ~/Maildir is set up with a folder called INBOX (with cur,new,tmp inside) and all my other folders set up at same level as INBOX (also with cur,new,tmp inside): ~/Maildir INBOX cur new tmp Otherfolder1 cur new tmp Otherfolder2 cur new tmp etc.. This email provider says that they use '/' as the IMAP folder separator so '.' can be used in folder names. Anyway, I am using Dovecot 1.0.15 on Debian Lenny and can't seem to get Dovecot to recognize this folder structure and display it in my MUA. In my dovecot.conf, I have: mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir When I fire up my MUA it connects fine but does not display anything -- the INBOX is empty and the other folders are not there. I have tried various configurations with the namespace private {} section but without success. What am I missing? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Hi, I'm having trouble setting up sendmail to be able to use dovecot deliver as an LDA... I don't want to be able to deliver mail locally, everything should go via deliver (virtual user setup)... And i'm confused about all the procmail/lda entry's in different sendmail config files... When using $# deliver -u testuser < testmail <-- he delivers my mail in the correct mailbox as stated in my dovecot passdb file homedir. [Dovecot] How many namespaces for several groups of shared mailboxes ?

Hello Timo, let's say you want to implement several distinct groups of shared mailboxes via one (several) public namespace(s) with dovecot-1.1.x/Maildir. For instance, team1, team2 and team3 work on different projects (project1, project2, project3). Obviously, as many public namespaces (#team1, #team2, #team3) would do the trick, but then, any user (including users who don't belong to any above team) would 'see' useless non-selectionable folders #team*. So my idea would be to create only one public namespace (#Public) into which I'd store directories team1, team2, team3, into which I'd put the needed shared mailboxes. Something like /courriel/boites/public/team1/.shared-project1/ /team2/.shared-project2/ /team3/.shared-project3/ with something like namespace public { separator = / prefix = '#Public/' location = maildir:/courriel/boites/public inbox = no hidden = no list = yes subscriptions = yes } I guess if unix right and ACL are set up correctly, other people would only see non-selectionable '#Public'. The only problem is the subscription file : my understanding is that you have only one subscription file per namespace. Maybe unless you specify something like location = maildir:/courriel/boites/public:CONTROL=<some user dependent location> But wouldn't that induce another problem : such a CONTROL directive would put dovecot-uidlist and dovecot-keywords in the same user dependent location. As I want to share the \Seen flag, I have to . put a dovecot-shared file . not specify INDEX (or at least, not to some user dependent location) So I would end up with . uid lists in some user dependant location (as a side effect of having several subscriptions files) . but indexes shared as uid is listed in index : wouldn't that be a problem ? thanks -- Thomas Hummel | Institut Pasteur <hummel(a)pasteur.fr> | Pôle informatique - systèmes et réseau

For 3 days, no mails were deleted. However, I have date_stamp in mysql table. I dropped ALL my mails in Junk/Trash folder ; and delete all dovecot.index* in these folders. After, I restarted dovecot with expire plugin, and when a first mail arrived in one of these folder, a line is created in mysql table. But nothing is deleted in my Trash/Pubs/Junk folder. I'm waiting for 3 days. (first mail arrived in these folder on 2009/02/08). Any ideas? Have I to use cronjob/find to delete the expired mail? Regards, -- -Nicolas.

I'm running squirrelmail on top of dovecot, and noticed that some of my users display the quota (using the squirrelmail plugin check_quota) and some don't. So I did some digging. For those that do not display the quota, their account also doesn't provide any data with: . getquotaroot inbox * QUOTAROOT "inbox" . OK Getquotaroot completed. When I check the account /Maildir folder it has info in maildirsize 0S 12744423 10 334 1 483685 1 and when I delete the maildirsize file it recreates. any ideas? thx. Hello, I have installed dovecot with MySQL in which the users are stored. Now I want to separate IMAP-Users from POP3-Users. So I added two columns to the user table (imap / pop3) which indicates, whether the user has access to IMAP or not. In order to get dovecot recognizing this separation I put the auth-config into the two protocol-sections and wrote two different dovecot-sql.conf-files. In the dovecot-sql-pop3.conf the query searches for pop3=1 and in the dovecot-sql-imap.conf it searches for imap=1. Done that, I expected POP3-Only-Users getting an error while trying to connect to the IMAP-service. But dovecot first tries to authenticate for IMAP and then uses the POP3-auth as fallback. How can I do this separation? Hi Actually I use quota. But I would like to use dict quota car with dict quota it is possible to view the used quota. [Dovecot] ACL plugin when file in Maildir is not a directory

Hello Timo, On a production (by that I mean many users) dovecot-1.1.8/Maidir server where ACL plugin has been enabled, I ran on a log verbosity problem : For some reason (in fact, due to mbox -> Maildir migration script), some people have in their Maildir a .procmail.logfile file. The problem is that dovecot (or the ACL plugin) wants to find a dovecot-acl file in what it would like to be a directory, and then complains : dovecot: IMAP(xxxxxxxx): open(/courriel/boites/xxxxxxxx/.procmail.logfile/dovecot-acl) failed: Not a directory Such a behavior makes the log file grow too much too quickly. Note that my setup regarding log verbosity is at its minimal/default (except for proctitle) : verbose_ssl = no verbose_proctitle = yes auth_verbose = no mail_debug = no auth_debug = no auth_debug_passwords = no One more thing : would I have a log (or in what verbosity setup would I have one) line complaining about no-acl in the system wide acl directory : acl = vfile:/opt/dovecot/dovecot-acls:cache_secs=300 as a matter of fact, /opt/dovecot/dovecot-acls is empty for me (I don't need it for now). thanks -- Thomas Hummel | Institut Pasteur <hummel(a)pasteur.fr> | Pôle informatique - systèmes et réseau

[Dovecot] v1.2 can't set ACL to empty string

Hi *, according to RfC4314 the rights argument to the setacl command might be an empty string ("zero right characters"): The third argument is a string containing an optional plus ("+") or minus ("-") prefix, followed by zero or more rights characters. existing clients (horde in particular) actually use this to remove all rights from an user. Currently dovecot 1.2 does not accept an empty rights string as argument to setacl. [Dovecot] Autocreate plugin

I've tried to use the autocreate plugin in order to autosubscribe users to public namespaces. namespace public { prefix = Public2/ separator = / location = maildir:/var/Public2:INDEX=~/Maildir/p-idx:CONTROL=~/Maildir/p-crtl hidden=no subscriptions=no inbox = no list=no } with plugin { autocreate = Spam autosubscribe = Spam autosubscribe1 = Public2/News autosubscribe2 = Public2/Shorewall } the plugin works alright with the Spam maildir, but not with the namespaces. Is this possible ??? Thanks Harry.
