Hello again, I have a coding question again: I can obtain the path of the current user's mailbox with the function mail_storage_get_mailbox_path(...) - so far so good. But is it possible to get this mailbox path for another user than the logged in one? Thanks in advance. Best regards. Hi i want to migrate from dbmail to dovecot, the main problem is passwords. dbmail uses "md5-hash" wich crypt "111" to "$1$tZNR7pR4$jMuuKWm7ljRyL8iEMfjep.". Tried all dovecot pass schemes thru `dovecotpw` and no one matches. The main question is how to migrate dbmail -> dovecot.

Hi all, I am running Dovecot v1.1.7 in a relatively quiet and calm environment. Suddenly overnight cron job started throwing out errors like: /usr/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail ext /usr/lib/dovecot/expire-tool Error: userdb(user1(a)mail.example) didn't return a home directory Error: userdb(user2(a)mail.example) didn't return a home directory Indeed, running this command produces: ------------------------- $ sudo /usr/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail ext /usr/lib/dovecot/expire-tool --test Error: userdb(user1(a)mail.example) didn't return a home directory Info: User lookup failed: user1(a)mail.example Error: userdb(user2(a)mail.example) didn't return a home directory Info: User lookup failed: user2(a)mail.example ------------------------- Yet these mailboxes are valid, corresponding users can login, send and receive mail. Other mailboxes are OK, too. Where to to start looking? I found that similar error message with v1.1.6 is fixed in v1.1.7, but I am running v.1.1.7 already. Please see dovecot configuration attached. [Dovecot] checkpassword auth issues

Hi, ok, I'm am developing a new solution that includes dovecot, and will be wanting to use the latest sieve implementation, so I have chosen to start with 1.2 as the base. I had a working install of 1.1.8 installed, and got a checkpassword setup working properly with it to authenticate a user. I used the passdb to call checkpassword, and the prefetch userdb to tell it to use the values that I sent back from the checkpassword script... I compiled and installed 1.2.alpha5, and now my checkpassword does not seem to be working, and I can't figure out why. Is it possible that checks for the return code from calling the checkpassword script have changed between the versions??? I currently exit the checkpassword script with _exit(0); to make the status 0 when it is successful, and I also set the AUTHORIZED environment variable to "2" as told... wierd thing is that it works in 1.1.8, but not in 1.2 Thanks, Tim.

Its working nice for regular recipient addresses like user(a)example.com and addresses with an extension like user+foo(a)example.com. Alias addresses are currently ignored. * An alias may expand into multiple destinations. Hello. Our clients use damn Outlook 2007 and it is can not move deleted messages to Trash folder. As I see dovecot have a experemental plugin "deleted-to-trash" right for this thing. Hello. I found what if you have a something like this: autocreate = Trash autocreate2 = Sent autocreate3 = Spam *Then I delete autocreate2 string* and... autocreate3 will not work. If I add autocreate2 - all work well. Yes it is seems to be right what they all must go after each otherm but if i have a 20 or 30 autocreate folders and i want to delete autocreate2 for example - all other from 3-20 will not work. Hi Timo i found "the bug" with autocreate in dovecot 1.2 last weeks i tested a lot with namespaces i finally declared shared namespace before private namespace in dovecot.conf by doing a lot of copy paste namespace test variants getting autocreate to work i finally copied my private namespace declaration above the shared namespace in dovecot.conf and now its working. So it simple autocreate parses the dovecot.conf from begin and uses the first namespace found in dovecot.conf , if that namespace doesnt match its going do log namespace not found in the log and stop working so its by design ,not really a bug , but it should dokumented elsewhere if you wont fix that behavior in the future -- Best Regards MfG Robert Schetterer Germany/Munich/Bavaria

I'm using Dovecot 1.1.7 in a simple setup with a static userdb: userdb: driver: static args: uid=50018 gid=50019 home=/home/dovemail When my users create folders via IMAP, the ownership of the mbox file is user dovemail, group dovemail, and permissions are 600. Hi to all, Today i have manually copied at least 250 mail from a mailbox to another and i have encountered some problems with dovecot. When finished to download all the messages, via pop3, at the next check mail dovecot give me that error: dovecot: Jan 15 10:59:55 Info: POP3(michele(a)domain.net): Mailbox init failed top=0/0, retr=0/0, del=0/29, size=932800 Then, the messages from the pop server was deleted, to the client an error was given but no mail downloaded. I created /etc/vmail/my-domain.de/user containing: test-user:{PLAIN}test:1002:100::/home/test-user:: No I try to login: telnet 127.0.0.1 143 Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to 127.0.0.1. Escape character is '^]'. * OK This is Dovecot, and it is ready. a01 LOGIN test-user(a)my-domain.de test a01 NO Authentication failed. It does not work! But when I change the "%d" to my-domain.de, and login without the domain, it works! What am I doing wrong? Thanks! Changes since v1.1.8: + deliver: Added rejection_subject setting, which is used for rejected mails. + pop3: Prevent clients from looping forever trying to fetch an expunged message. + If login process crashes, log the IP address that (maybe) caused it. + If core dump limit is 0, add "core dumps disabled" to startup log line. - mbox: Fixed assert-crash with pop3_lock_session=yes - dbox: Fixes to handling maildir-converted files. - Auth cache wasn't working correctly for all fields (e.g. allow_nets) with blocking passdbs (e.g. mysql). - pgsql: Handle reconnecting to server without failing auth lookups. - Berkeley DB memory/resource leak fixes. - maildir: Fixes to handling over 26 keywords.

Set it to the default CAPABILITY reply you get from Dovecot, just remove IDLE.

Hi I am having problems with a new server that I'm setting up. For some reason it doesn't want to create the directories for the users. I'm getting a permissions denied error when logging into the server. Hi all, Is there a way to enforce STARTTLS for all connections, regardless their authentication mechanism? disable_plaintext_auth only takes care of the auth conversation, but I would like to have all communication encrypted. As far as I can see, this would only be possible when using imaps and disabling imap. However, I would like to have the other way around; disabling imaps and using imap for all communication (with enforced STARTTLS). Am I missing something? Durk

Is there a way to tell the dovecot mbox_snarf plugin to use an alternate location for the index/cache files? It doesn't seem to want to use the INDEX variable. I'm guessing the answer is no because of all the ties in lib-storage/index/mbox/*c to the directory where the file(that is the inbox) lives. The filesystem where I keep the inbox file doesn't have a directory for the user to own. The user only owns the mbox file. Thanks, Jonathan

Hi list, Enabling plugins returns fatal errors like the following: Jan 16 00:28:11 norman dovecot: deliver(jman(a)zultron.com): Fatal: Plugin sieve_plugin not found from directory /usr/lib64/dovecot/lda Same errors for loading plugins in the "protocol imap" section of dovecot.conf (tested trash_plugin), same errors for loading other plugins (tested virtual_plugin), same errors for different spellings of "mail_plugins" (lib90_sieve_plugin.so, sieve_plugin.so, sieve_plugin). The directory must be correct, because if lib90_sieve_plugin.so is copied to sieve_plugin.so: Jan 16 00:33:16 norman dovecot: deliver(jman(a)zultron.com): Fatal: Multiple files for module sieve_plugin: /usr/lib64/dovecot/lda/lib90_sieve_plugin.so, /usr/lib64/dovecot/lda/sieve_plugin.so Invoking the deliver process with strace showed /usr/lib64/dovecot/lda being opened, fstated, and getdents returned the expected results, including {d_ino=67593, d_off=608760247, d_reclen=40, d_name="lib90_sieve_plugin.so"} After this, the plugin (nor any other file, aside from /etc/localtime) was not opened, the above error was sent, and deliver exited. The RPM was recompiled for CentOS 5.1 from an ArkLinux Dovecot 1.2 SRPM; the specfile appears to be of the same lineage as the Rawhide Dovecot 1.1 SRPM, and it's quite straightforward. I did add the ManageSieve patch to it, and otherwise no noteworthy changes. Others on the list who had this problem usually suffered from misspellings in mail_plugins or incorrect mail_plugin_dir; the "multiple files" error seems to eliminate this as a possibility. One other fellow had this problem, and fixed it with a recompile; however, since this is an SRPM, there's not much room for random changes in the process, and recompiling didn't fix the problem. Without dovecot plugins enabled, dovecot and deliver are working well in a postfix/LDAP/virtual domains configuration. Below is the dovecot -n output. Hello, can I anywhere get the name of the currently logged in user? I'm still implementing a custom ACL plugin (IMAP commands MYRIGHTS, GETACL, SETACL, DELETEACL), and for some functions (for example storing the current folder's ACL in combination with this username) I need to obtain the currently logged in IMAP user. On this page http://imapwiki.org/ImapTest/Running It gives command line parameters to define. One of them is "password=pass" but this resulted in an "Unknown arg" response for me on a fresh install. I then looked at some examples and they give the argument as "pass=pass" which works for me. Was the argument name changed recently or something?

I would like to use "imap via fetchmail ssh plugin" and "deliver via ~/.forward (to get sieve support)". We're looking at replacing our mysql auth and userdb, with a set of Red Hat Directory servers, and I see dovecot supports either authentication binds, or "password lookups": http://wiki.dovecot.org/AuthDatabase/LDAP I'm curious if anybody can give any insight as to what kind of performance to expect from authentication binds ? How many POP3s/second should we expect from it ? Our directory servers will be 2 blades with 4 cores of 2GHz each, and we expect to keep the full directory in memory on both servers. -jf

Patch #9 adds support for Open Directory and an encrypted SSL keystore. Notes about this patch: It adds --enable-apple and --with-od options to configure (after running autoconf). It depends on patch #7 (hash_table_create/destroy). Automake wipes out this patch's changes to Makefile.in. The - framework options should come from Makefile.am but the author didn't do that. It uses a tab-stops-every-4 indentation style. It may compile and run only on Mac OS X 10.6, currently available via Apple Developer Connection. This code is stable but Apple is still verifying its robustness. This is the patch that needs the user name as extra_fields[0] in deliver, to handle user name aliases. More patches to come, probably after the holidays.

[Dovecot] Maildir++ quota: When is it recalculated?

We use Maildir++ quota, with the rules taken from our LDAP backend. We also have an old expunge script that's not quota-aware; it removes old messages from the maildir by simply deleting the files. Sometimes, a mailbox is over quota before the script runs, but well under quota after the old messages are deleted. This change does not seem to be picked up, however: When I try to deliver a new message (using Dovecot's deliver), the attempt fails with an "over quota" error. I tried finding out from the source code whether this is intended behavior, but unfortunately, I'm not enough of a programmer, so I have to ask here: Should I be able to delete mails from a maildir, and expect the quota plugin to notice the change? We use Dovecot 1.1.8, by the way. Ulrich

Greetings, I have several users reporting that PDF attachments are coming in corrupted. They are using either thunderbird or outlook on windows xp. I have flushed the cache files for the users, but the problem still persists. Could anyone offer some troubleshooting tips? Thanks in advance for any assistance. Below is my version and config. (NOTE: I am not on the mailing list so please Cc: me.) dovecot-1.1.6-2.fc10.i386 (configuration not changed from stock) Fedora 10 AMD Athlon XP ext3 Maildir format doesn't store keywords in the index properly -- it goes up to 26 and then further keywords are dropped. I ran the tests with a simple script that feeds the lines from "commands" to Dovecot one at a time and waits for the "OK" before the next one. The IMAP command file is attached, as well as output of dovecot, idxview, and logview running against both mbox and maildir formats. Hi, just subscribed after successfully (?) migrating from a somewhat old linuxconf/vimap config. dovecot-1.1.7, x86 A few issues: The index files seem to be created with the wrong permissions. I get numerous ``Dec 24 15:36:29 mail dovecot: POP3(user@domain): stat(/var/run/dovecot/imap-index/domain/user/.imap/INBOX) failed: Permission denied (euid=60107 egid=231 missing +x perm: /var/run/dovecot/imap-index/domain)'' errors. the directory /var/run/dovecot/imap-index is drwxrwxrwt 29 dovecot dovecot 4.0k Dec 24 15:57 imap-index but the directories inside it are created as drwx------ 15 60107 popusers 4.0k Dec 24 15:50 domain Questions: - Why is POP3 interested in the imap indices ? - IMAP clients do not complain all that much, as far as I can see, but what happens to POP3 ? - Is there something to configure to get rid of this ? Also, I have written a somewhat sloppy patch to determine the domain from the server's IP. That way it is not necessary to persuade all users to switch to logging in as ``user@domain'' (which I've tried with very limited success). [Dovecot] Apple patch 10

Patch #10 allows the pop3 and imap mail processes to handle multiple clients. We know this weakens the security model but it greatly increases scalability especially when clients are idle. Here's how it works. When there are no mail processes, or none serving fewer than mail_max_connections clients, the master creates a new mail process pretty much like it does now, but with some new environment variables (PERSISTENT_MAIL_PROCESS and CONNECTION_ID, and ADVISE_SET[GU]ID instead of RESTRICT_SET[GU]ID) and a unix-domain socket connection back to the master. For future clients the master sends the client socket and a full dump of the environment via that connection. Persistent mail processes multiplex I/O for their connected clients and switch the whole environment and the effective user ID, group ID, and supplemental groups each time. The result is that most of dovecot's code and assumptions remain unchanged: the mail process executes imap/pop commands with the permissions of the user and with nearly the same environment so getenv() still works as expected. Some assumptions do change, for instance global state variables like last_partial and quota_set are forbidden, and must be stored per-client or per-user. Also it's no longer OK just to exit or panic on error, for that disconnects multiple users not just one. Some key entry points in the patch are create_mail_process() in mail- process.c and io_env_switch() in ioloop.c. Notes about this patch: - The base for this patch is dovecot-1.1.7 + Apple patch 9, not because this patch needs Open Directory but simply because it adds one line to the Apple attributions in COPYING. - This patch depends on Apple patch 7 (hash_table_create/destroy). - This patch introduces the following new config options for the pop3 and imap protocols: - mail_process_per_connection = yes - mail_max_connections = 20 The default value of mail_process_per_connection (yes) preserves the current secure model. Changing it to no allows multiplexing, with up to mail_max_connections simultaneous clients per process. See dovecot- example.conf for more info. - It restricts the mail_executable config option to minimize unpleasant surprises. When mail_process_per_connection = no the communication protocol between the master process and the mail processes changes as described above. A naive third-party mail_executable might break. See dovecot-example.conf for more info. - Some changes are intentionally awkward in order to minimize code deltas to simplify merges (of new dovecot releases into our source tree). These are so marked. Feel free to clean them up. - Changes tagged with "APPLE" are ours, including the whole new directory mail-common. All the untagged changes, including the entire contents of the new files mail-user.[ch], are copied straight from dovecot-1.2 (alpha3, I believe). We needed dovecot-1.2's support for multiple users in order to handle quotas correctly, and we needed it in 1.1. If a change in the patch is not marked somehow with APPLE then it comes from dovecot-1.2. - Some other data structures also needed to be made per-client/user, for instance last_partial from imap-fetch-body.c, quota_set from quota- plugin.c, and process_primary_gid etc. from restrict-access.c. - Sending the master process SIGINFO (on platforms that support that signal) makes it print its view of all the clients connected to all the mail processes. Sending SIGINFO to an individual mail process makes it print its view. These are not necessarily always the same. For instance, on a config reload (SIGHUP), the master disconnects from the mail processes but leaves them running. The output is admittedly kinda geeky. - The logging tag for a persistent mail process is just "*" instead of the user name, since a process can serve multiple users. Some individual messages (such as connect/disconnect) identify the user. - The expire plugin uses global state variables which are incompatible with persistent mail processes. The patch detects trouble but does not fix it because we don't need it. We leave that as an exercise for you :). - The dict client interface is blocking which is unfortunate for persistent mail processes. The patch does not address this, since the delay is probably small and we don't use it anyway. - Some of the accounting is gnarly because of the need to honor mail_max_userip_connections in a world where a single user can have any number of active connections on any number of mail processes. [Dovecot] Dovecot suggestions for new installation

I've been testing Dovecot for a while now and am preparing to replace our outdated IMAP system with it. The current system serves about 300 email users who run a mixture of clients (Eudora, Apple Mail, Thunderbird and Outlook). Can any of the many experts on this list answer a few questions: 1) What's the latest stable release of Dovecot I should be running on this new system (Dovecot will be running on a RedHat Linux AS 4 64 bit system with plenty of memory and CPU). I've been running 1.13 on my test system but I see that 1.18 just came out (although I don't know if I should switch to it immediately. 2) What configuration file options (if any) should I turn on to best handle the range of email clients listed above? 3) Are there any "sizing" options I need to worry about setting for the number of email users I have (I suspect that 300 users is considered a rather small mail system but I want to minimize its resource usage as much as possible while still giving decent performance from Dovecot). And, just out of curiosity, I'm looking into the idea of switching users from mbox format over to Maildir format on this system (it will use all locally- connected disks and have no NFS mounts). Does the Dovecot automatic migration program to migrate from mbox to Maildir work well or are there "gotchas"? Thanks.

Hi all, I'm trying to implement checkpassword authentication with a simple bash script. In some way I can't get the password from file descriptor 3. The start of script looks like this: #!/bin/bash read -d '\0' -r -u 3 USERNAME="${REPLY}" read -d '\0' -r -u 3 PASSWORD="${REPLY}" if [ -z "${USERNAME}" ] || [ -z "${PASSWORD}" ] then exit 111 fi It always exits with 111, because PASSWORD is empty. In whatever way I try to retrieve data from fd3, I never happen to get more data than the username. Is this a known problem? Am I doing something silly? Replies are much appreciated! Durk FYI: GSSAPI auth works perfect and PAM worked before switching to checkpassword too. I'm just getting familiar with Dovecot. I get this error when I send mail to a mailbox that is over quota. I have no problem with the way quota is working and I have no problem with the sieve script detecting spam and delivering it to the Spam folder. I dont think mail_location:/home/vmail/%d/%n/Maildir should be terminated with an / Because I've try to use the mail_location with userdb static, dovecot still able to create the directory anyway. [Dovecot] Dovecot, pop3, mBox

I have to migrate some old system to new one with installed dovecot (It's my first time using dovecot). I have all mails inside /var/spool/mail folder (mbox files). I can connect and receive mails via POP3, but problem is that dovecot doesn't clear mbox file (everytime when I make send/receive in mailclient program I get all mails again). Dear all, I've been experiencing this problem and still can't find a solution for this. I want to have a dynamic quota for each virtual user. [Dovecot] Deliver *sometimes* delivers via /tmp?

Hi, I'm running dovecot (1.1.7) deliver and sieve (1.1.5) on a Fedora 9 platform, using selinux targetet mode. Most of the mail deliveries goes well, but once deliver tried to copy the mail to the /tmp directory, which it seems it not allowed by selinux. I guess that deliver wants to sanitize the mail or something and therefore copies it to /tmp. Before I ask for selinux to allow this, I would like to know why? It could also be an error, leading deliver into a seldom used piece of code? I order to get the mail delivered I put selinux into permissive mode, using: semanage permissive -a dovecot_deliver_t And then the mail is delivered - below are excerpts from different logs and I have *NOT* attached the message which could not get delivered - because of its size. Hi all, We updated to 1.1.7 a week or two back from 1.1.6 (both standard atrpms builds). Since doing so, twice now I've seen the imap services accept connections but they hang before the banner is printed (pop seems to be unaffected). There weren't amazing numbers of imap sessions open at the time (only something like 400-500; we've had 1.5k in the past), so I suspect this is a regression between 1.1.6 and 1.1.7 where you've got a leak of fd's ? If it happens again I'll try and get a snapshot of the fd's open by the master dovecot process. Hi, I'm writing a script to mark all new mail read, including all mail in folders, for my system which uses Maildir and Dovecot. The reason for this script is that I use Google Mail at work, which forwards to my SMTP/IMAP system at home. When I've finished my last check of GMail at work, I want to be able to quickly mark all mail as read at home too. Basically this script moves everything from all /new/ directories to /cur/ directories and appends :2,S ("Seen" info status) to the filename. It seems to work, but I'm relatively new to IMAP and Maildir. Can anyone spot any potential problems? [Dovecot] new flags in Maildir files

Sorry if this is a dumb question: I migrated my third system from courier to dovecot. My previous two were MacOSX the third is FreeBSD 6. I noticed (because of an rsync process taking longer than usual...) that on FreeBSD the message files have, most of them at least, gained extra suffix letters (in the range a-h I'd say) that I do not see (mostly if not at all) on my MacOS systems. I wonder if this is because of a different migration process, as in the first two cases I wrongly run courier-dovecot-migrate.pl without the --convert option as I was satisfied that the OK result for all Mailboxes was enough... (no pop here), while on FreeBSD I correctly applied the --convert option. The other difference is the version, 1.1.6 for MacOSX, 1.1.7 for FreeBSD. Cannot find a relevant entryin the ChangeLog. (now running rsync with the --fuzzy option, hopefully it will find the files cutting on transfer times!) Thanks Giuliano

Hi, I know my question might sound a little bit strange, but is it possible to download IMAP folders via POP3? I have clients who use POP3 on their main machines and IMAP on their "on the road" notebooks. It would be good to download all folders created on the notebook via POP3 to the main desktop. [Dovecot] DC testing observation and a question

I have been running a test DC IMAP server to evaluate the new release before migrating from 1.0.15 to 1.1.8. The test server access all the INBOX and homedir folder filesystems through NFS imports. The index file filesystem is local on both the production server and the test one.. This is messy in that when I ask some one tests using the test sever, the index has to be created or re-gennned, since the local index either doesn't exist or is several months old (from the last time a prospective upgrade was tested) and thus doesn't reflect data on the production DC IMAP server. 1) Watching the syslog maillog has been intriguing...different IMAP client show widely differently use patterns. a) Users running TBird and Seamonkey have 2-5 imap sessions (ps -aef | grep <userid>) *but* very little syslog activity...sparse occasional logins and disconnects b) Users running Exchange have only 1 imap sessions *but* every 5 minutes will generate login and disconnect messages (in and out in the space of a second) for each folders. So for a user with 22 folders, there will be 44 syslog messages in the maillog every 5 minutes. Just curious....any thought as to which is more efficient and by how much? 2) When I try to switch a MacMail client over, it sees the new mail, but not the old mail in the INBOX. If I enable SSL connection in Thunderbird 2, after three-five minutes I got a lot of different errors in Thunderbird (Server is not IMAP, Connection lost...). Everything comes back to normal if I restart Dovecot in the server, but after 5 minutes I got the same errors. This happens both with an ADSL connection (Thunderbird on Windows XP) AND with a direct 1 Gbit cross cable connection (Thunderbird on Ubuntu 64 8.10). If I disable SSL connection on Thunderbird, everything comes back to normal and I don't get any error. Hello, In our configuration, we are using a "passdb passwd-file", with "user=" directives in each username, and a separate "userdb passwd-file" which contains the target usernames for the "user=" directives. This works fine, for normal logins via POP and IMAP. For customer support testing purposes, we also set up a temporary "master=yes" passwd-file. This works fine, for any passdb username that does not have a "user=" field. However, it seems that if we use the master user to log into a username that is in the passdb with a "user=" field, dovecot looks in the userdb for the original username, and not for the "user=" username specified in the passdb passwd-file. Hi! Using dovecot-1.1.17, and BDB-4.6.21. I'm having this error in every two weeks or so. I've running this in a crontab: /usr/local/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail \ ext /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/expire-tool The expire plugin and tool is working fine, the configuration is ok, and I'm using the BDB backend. What happens in every ~two weeks is dovecot starts to give me this error messages: Error: dict: db_env: Unable to allocate memory for transaction detail Error: dict: Failed to initialize dictionary 'expire' Reading thru Oracle's Berkeley DB FAQ: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/berkeley-db/faq/db_faq.html#28 "This error means the maximum number of active transactions configured for Berkeley DB has been reached [...] When all of the memory available in the database environment for transactions is in use, calls to being a transaction will fail until some active transactions complete. By default, the database environment is configured to support at least 20 active transactions." What could be happening here? Why coudn't it finish its transactions? We've verified that the server clocks and machines clocks are in sync. Starting yesterday afternoon, We are getting ~850 log entries of the form 'Timeout while waiting for lock for transaction log files' or 'Our dotlock file was modified, assuming it wasn't overridden (kept it 180 sec) Based on packet capture, just one of these index files shows 28553 GETATTRs queries in in a one minute. At this happened at exactly the same time on all of our servers, it is pretty clear that the back-end system (or network) is a major factor although nobody will confess that they made any changes. It would be helpful, and very appreciated, to get more information about what this might be so that we can nudge the correct people to undo whatever it is that they didn't do. [Dovecot] Enforcing TLS

Hello all, I've happily been using Dovecot for a couple of years now, but only a couple of days ago I configured it to speak both TLS and SSL for both POP3 and IMAP. Ideally I want users to use TLS, but I've enabled SSL, because some mailers (at least Apple Mail on OS X Tiger) don't support TLS. Right now I'm in sort of a transitional phase, where I'm asking users to enable TLS in their email clients, if not enabled already. After a couple of weeks/months I want to disable any (non-local) connections that don't use TLS or SSL. I already asked on IRC whether this was possible, because I was unable to find this on the Wiki. It turns out there is a configuration switch called `disable_plaintext_auth', but looking at the description this only prevents people from using plain-text username/password authentication. It does not actually enforce TLS or SSL. My question: is there support to enforce TLS when people connect to non-SSL ports? If someone comes up with a solution, I'll add it to the SSL article on the Wiki. I'm using Dovecot 1.1.7, installed on a FreeBSD 6.4-STABLE system. [Dovecot] Restoring individual messages from a backup into a Maildir setup?

We have a user who deleted IMAP folders from his account, so I simply tried to restore the folder ".FolderName" from our backup. I checked that file/folder ownership was the same as the original, but the Dovecot IMAP server is throwing errors at the client. I've tried copying the individual message files from the "cur" folders in the backup directory, but Dovecot immediate goes into panic mode and throws errors at the IMAP client when I do that. Even if the file is owned by the currect UID. I've tried putting those files into "tmp" and "new" as well, with no luck. I looked at the following thread, but it didn't help. http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2007-August/024971.html The thread from Sep 2008 wasn't much help either: http://www.mail-archive.com/dovecot@dovecot.org/msg12846.html ... Eh, I figured this out before I even posted. Restoration is indeed that simple. The problem is that the files were not labeled with the proper SELinux security context after being restored. When the file was restored, it was assigned a context of "root:object_r:file_t", which is not a context that the Dovecot service has permissions to interact with. I had to re-label the files after restoring them with # chcon -R user_u:object_r:mail_spool_t foldername So the lesson here is to check /var/log/messages and look for sealert indicators when restoring files. ... Hopefully that helps some other people out when dealing with Red Hat / CentOS with SELinux set to enforcing mode.

[Dovecot] dovecot-auth Temporary But Frequent CPU Spike

Hi.. I am setting up a new server (2GHz CPU, Ubuntu 8.10) and am using dovecot for an IMAP server. I have installed dovecot 1.1.4 and Squirrelmail 1.4.15. sudo dovecot -n shows this: # 1.1.4: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf log_timestamp: %Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S protocols: imap login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login login_executable: /usr/lib/dovecot/imap-login login_process_per_connection: no mail_privileged_group: mail auth default: passdb: driver: pam userdb: driver: passwd The problem I'm noticing is that if I do top -d 1 while clicking links in Squirrelmail (e.g., logging in, the Inbox link, opening a message), I see that a "dovecot-auth" process maximizes the CPU for about a second. While this is not a huge amount, it seems like with multiple users it could quickly bog down a server . Are there any recommendations or thoughts on what might cause the one-second CPU spike? -- or is that just normal operation? Thanks for your thoughts. - Joe Clark

[Dovecot] cannot delete emails in inbox

I am working on upgrading our current squirrelmail and replace uw-imap with dovecot. I have what looks like a successful installation. My current setup is: Centos 5.2 sendmail 8.13.8 dovecot 1.1.17 (imap) squirrelmail 1.4.17 I can send and receive email fine. However when I try to delete an email in my Inbox, it doesn't get deleted. It only sends a copy to the Trash folder. But the email is still in the Inbox. I can purge and delete the contents in my Trash and Sent folder, no problem. I am not sure if this is a Squirrelmail issue or a Dovecot issue. Please advice. Thank you -- Jane

Hello, I've unfortunately been unable to find anything relating to the problem I'm having specifically, in searching the list or google, and so I now plead to you to assistance. I'm running Dovecot as an LDA and SASL auth for Postfix on a Debian 4 box. Dovecot is version 1.0.rc15 (the official debian pkg version). The problem I'm running into is this. After some time of running (lately it's been as little as 5 minutes), I start to see the following errors in dovecot.log: deliver(user(a)domain.com): "Dec 23 14:38:47 "Error: User request from dovecot-auth timed out deliver(anotheruser(a)domain.com): "Dec 23 14:38:48 "Error: User request from dovecot-auth timed out Postfix responds to these by simply deferring the messages. Dovecot itself, however, begins to return 'Authentication failed' messages after significant lag time (sometimes greater than 30s): Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. +OK Dovecot-POP user username +OK pass mypassword -ERR Authentication failed. Now, for authentication, Dovecot is using LDAP on the local server. The only additional information I can find pertaining to these errors is the following from slapd.log: slapd[22593]: connection_input: conn=6 deferring operation: pending operations These messages correspond 1-to-1 to the above 'deliver' errors, where 'conn' is always the same number. Restarting dovecot and ldap resolves the issue for a few minutes, but sure enough the errors start flowing again. I'm really at the end of my rope on this, as nothing I do seems to help. I have a good 500+ customers being effected by this as well, and they're all none too pleased by it. If this is something that will absolutely be resolved by upgrading from source, that is doable, but we'd prefer to stick with the official package version if possible. Hi, I've installed dovecot debian stable(from backports) version (1.0.15). Its great..i just have problem with sieve filters. I use only web tool for creating filters that works for me (avelsieve plugin for squirrelmail). it creates rules, where specified folder has prefix INBOX. Thats fine.. Since dovecot has configured prefix INBOX too. BUT mails are delivered to INBOX.INBOX.test_folder and thats ugly and not usable. I've figured out new version 1.2 should work, but i dont like idea to install not stable version to production server. Is there any patch or something for stable version? Thanks a lot! Radim

Here are the first few simple patches from Apple, based on dovecot-1.1.7. The comments with "APPLE" in them helped us merge in your new releases; feel free to remove them. Please let me know if you want subsequent patches in a different format, or if you have any questions. Patch #1. Some versions of Mac OS X have buggy CMSG_* macros. Patch #2. Don't set "<username>=1" in the environment. Patch #3. Some versions of Mac OS X return near-duplicate kevents. Patch #4. Null renames are actually pretty slow on HFS (Apple's file system), so avoid them. Patch #5. Required by Apple's lawyers.

Here are a few more patches. Still keeping it easy for now. Again the basis for these patches is dovecot-1.1.7. Patch #6. Solve a cross-compilation endianness issue. Currently, Dovecot assumes that the endianness of the build system is the same as the endianness of the runtime system. This is not necessarily true. We ran into this while compiling for i386 on a ppc machine. The patch switches to using gcc's __BIG_ENDIAN__ macro; see the comment in the patch to configure.in. It also removes the related and unused MAIL_INDEX_COMPAT_FLAGS parameter. This patch may be applicable to other build environments with a little tweaking. Patch #7. Replace all occurrences of "hash_create" and "hash_destroy" with "hash_table_create" and "hash_table_destroy" respectively. The symbols hash_create and hash_destroy conflict with symbols defined in <strhash.h> and libc. This showed up when loading dovecot's quota plugin (one of our future patches will add a hash table to it; stay tuned). The wrong hash_create was called which caused a crash at the first hash_insert. Apparently this is only a problem in loaded dynamic libraries and not linked-in ones. Patch #8. Back off after auth failures to deter abusers. Stalls 5 seconds per failed attempt. PS -- Please forgive me if I make a mistake at some point while splitting these patches out from our source tree. They're all mingled together on my end and it's sometimes tricky to extract just the right changes for each patch. If anything seems fishy just let me know and I'll take another look. Thanks.

[Dovecot] ManageSieve woes

Hi everyone, New to the list, and fairly confident that this issue is purely down to my own idiocy, so please go easy on me! I've been running Dovecot 1.0.13 on Debian (via Aptitude package) for some time, and have been delighted with it. For a while I've toyed with the idea of using ManageSieve as there's a nice plugin for Roundcube, so I'm trying to follow the how-to at http://wiki.dovecot.org/ManageSieve. First of all I've downloaded the Dovecot 1.1.7 source and compiled it myself. I've patched it using the appropriate ManageSieve 1.1.7 diff file referenced in the how-to, and it all appears to be running fine. The next step is to compile the ManageSieve 0.10.4 source itself. I've extracted the tarball and attempted ./configure, but it's failing with the following errors: ./configure: line 19826: cd: ../dovecot: No such file or directory ./configure: line 19829: cd: ../dovecot-sieve-1.1: No such file or directory dovecot-config not found from /home/user/dovecot-1.1-managesieve-0.10.4, use --with-dovecot=PATH to give path to compiled Dovecot sources or to a directory with the installed dovecot-config file. configure: error: dovecot-config not found I'm not entirely sure what I'm supposed to be pointing --with-dovecot to here. Tru64 5.1b PK6 : dovecot 1.1.7 : cc Configuration checks for strtoumax and strtoimax are positive but both are unresolved during compilation. strtoq and strtouq checks are negative. I can modify compat.c to use "unsigned long ret = 0;" in place of strtoumax (does this break anything?) and/but I would like to know how to handle strtoimax. Thanks in advance.

I've tried waiting for longer than the 300 seconds and then logged in again, but I still get the same result as above. Is there a gotcha that I'm unaware of or have I done something stupid (which seems the most likely :P)? Thanks Guy -- Don't just do something...sit there!

[Dovecot] Setting IMAP keywords/flags on delivery

Hi there, We've been long time users of Dovecot, and have found it a great IMAP server. I don't think we've had any serious problems in the 3-4 years of use. So great work. :) We have a IMAP inbox that is accessed by a number of different users from Thunderbird. We have a rule in Thunderbird to flag new emails as "TO DO", so someone can unflag the email once it has been actioned. This process works fairly well for a simple workflow, but problems arise when someone connects to the inbox with a Thunderbird instance that doesn't have the "TO DO" rule configured. The email will not be flagged properly. :( I'd like to be able to set this flag/keyword when the mail is delivered to the inbox, on the server side. That way the flag will be set no matter which client accesses the Inbox first. We currently use mail drop for our server-side mail filtering .... and would like to do a similar thing with this flagging process. We're using Dovecot 1.0.15 on Debian Testing, and use Maildir storage and maildrop as our delivery agent. I've read about how the keywords and Thunderbird labels work in the wiki article here (http://wiki.dovecot.org/MailboxFormat/Maildir) So I could probably write some sort of script to query the "dovecot-keywords" file, and rename the Maildir file to set the appropriate flag. But this sounds a like a bit of a hack, and maybe a little dangerous. Does anyone have any recommendations as to how I could achieve something like this? I'm keen to hear any ideas, whether it's through scripting, or some sort of scriptable/command-line IMAP client. Ideally, we'd have a way to set the flag at the time when the mail is delivered.... or when the first client retrieves any new mail? [Dovecot] Default dirs in ./configure?

Hi! I try to build a new 1.1.7 installation. Since I'm not a large sysadmin, just my own private mail server admin, I just wonder why the sysconf and state dirs defaults to $prefix? Maybe I'm old-school, but isn't /etc and /var, respectively, a better default than /usr/local? Should require two new variables in the configure script, though. Sorry to bump so quickly but I have a handful of users who can't log in at the moment and would like to get this fixed. Am I missing a config option or is this a bug? The only reference I can find in the mailing list archives is that this configuration should be supported. If I leave the "listen" value as the default in /etc/dovecot.conf I'll get a message similar to the following on each port that it tries to open during startup: # dovecot -F Fatal: listen(::, 143) failed: Address already in use If I set either: listen = * or listen = [::] then it will start up fine. Perhaps it is as though the code tries to open the port twice for both ip4 and ip6? - Bruce

These are the last patches for now, and they're small. The base for each of them is dovecot-1.1.7 + Apple patches 9 and 10, again not because of a logical dependency but just because these patches change parts of the earlier patches. Patch #11 adds a few dtrace providers to key points in the code. We are still validating the correct placement and usefulness of these. One cool thing about dtrace is that when not in use the hooks literally are just a couple of no-op instructions. Patch #12 increases many listen queue sizes to handle high loads better. The new values are not necessarily the best possible values but they do allow more throughput. Patch #13 makes dovecot adapt to dynamic host identity changes upon config reload. Patch #14 covers three miscellaneous changes, to support more file descriptors and an "unlimited" number of mail processes, and a different default mail user. That's all our patches for now!

Hello, I'd like to find a function in the sourcecode which enables me to get the chroot-path of the mailstore, so I can concatenate it with the result of mail_storage_get_mailbox_path to get the full path of a mailbox within the filesystem. When dovecot creates a folder from imap user the permissions are rwx------ I need them to be rwxrwx--- Is there a way to change this in the configuration file ?
