[Ignore the previous e-mail, I somehow sent it when I was trying to paste from clipboard] I recently migrated my dovecot/postfix setup to a new machine. After doing so, I have encountered a problem where imap processes get stuck in a loop eating loads of IO on the machine. Looking at the trace (snippet below), it looks like they are sitting and reading the inbox and other folders of certain users repeatedly. This seems to be triggered by the delivery of a new e-mail to the user's mailbox while they have an IMAP client connected, though I cannot say for sure. This had never happened before on the old machine. I'm certain more information would be useful, please let me know what I can provide to help! [Dovecot] antispam plugin problem

Hi people! (Especially Johannes, probably =) I recently switched to DSPAM + antispam plugin combination. Mostly I am happy but there is a problem with calling dspam-exec in order to relearn the messages. Moving messages to spam folder does not work, giving the error message 'Failed to call dspam' to client. I don't know why it needs 1GB of stack space for that. Changing dspam to dspamc does not help. Interestingly enough, launching 'sendmail' in mailtrain mode works ok. Hi Timo, Dovecot fails to start after upgrading from 1.1.4 to 1.1.6: Fatal: userdb didn't return a home directory, but mail location used it (%h): %h/mail:CONTROL=%h/control:INDEX=%h/index Error: imap dump-capability process returned 89 Fatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf Adding a fake home directory to args in master-settings.c:get_imap_capability solved the problem for me, but there may be a more correct fix. [Dovecot] dovecot expire doesn't work (?)

Hi! I'm using dovecot-1.1.5 and trying to make the expire plugin work. What I've configured in dovecot.conf is the following: protocol imap,pop3,lda { mail_plugins = [...] expire } dict { expire = db:/var/dovecot/expire/expire.db } plugin { expire = spamassassin/SPAM 2 spamassassin/HAM 2 expire_dict = proxy::expire } I have a sieve rule, to copy certain messages to my "spamassassin/SPAM" folder. Then I want to expire those messages after 2 days (I think I've configured that under the plugin{} section in dovecot.conf). So the actual message saving is done by the dovecot's deliver, but I have the plugin loaded under the "protocol lda {}" section too. So I thought now I just have to wait 2 days, and run the expire-tool, and then it will expire the messages. Now I have three messages dated back to 10.25, but running the expire-tool outputs nothing. # dovecot --exec-mail ext /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/expire-tool --test Nothing in the logfiles, and nothing on the console. Hi there, I'm running a server under Gentoo 64 with postfix 2.5.5, Dovecot 1.1.4-r1 and Dovecot-antispam 20080829 (all are the lastest versions availables under Portage). [Dovecot] Dovecot read only for users

All, I have hopefully a base question. How do you give users only read access to their inbox and folders? If I use chmod 600 they have full access. If I do a 400 they have read access but cannot access their inbox. The config file is the out of the box config other than advertising IMAP and IMAPS. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi folks, I'm using the latest Dovecot 1.16 with Postfix for my FreeBSD box. Since v1.1.4 (if i remember correctly), the following message is displayed whenever starting Dovecot. "Info: If you have trouble with authentication failures, enable auth_debug setting. See http://wiki.dovecot.org/WhyDoesItNotWork" Besides that, Dovecot works great but I wonder what this message is all about. I've searched wiki and mailing list but didn't find anything related. PS: I removed Dovecot removing all stalled files and directories and reinstalled it from scratch. Still the message is displayed whenever it starts. Any idea? Athan

Hello! I just installed Dovecot's latest nightly build (20081020) and tried the virtual folder features. I started with a really simple "all" folder: | # virtual/all | * | all But selecting this folder causes dovecot to panic (in most cases). While trying to debug this, I got slightly different results and I am not really sure yet if this is just non-deterministic, depends on some cached dovecot data or if there is some difference between the debug build or my rudimentary, unpatched debian package (which lacks the debug symbols). The results below are from a build with --prefix set to a clean, temporary directory. [Dovecot] mail_executable's process environment

Hello, I recently had to get Dovecot 1.1.4 to write to a "pop3/imap-before- smtp" db such that my MTA could permit relay after a successful authentication with Dovecot. The 'pop3' and 'imap' processes are executed only after a successful auth, so replacing them with wrappers which write to the db seemed the natural choice. Lo and behold, someone thought of something like this, as the 'mail_executable' directive exists - neat. Upon inspection of the processes' environment I'm pleased to see that there's a load of useful information in there. However, one essential component in my case is the destination network address, which is missing. I added it with the attached patch, exposed as 'LOCAL_IP'. Works for me. Is this something that would be useful to anyone else? -Mike

Hello, I would like to log all IMAP client commands sent to dovecot. The format would be time pid command arguments. I reviewed http://wiki.dovecot.org/Logging and started digging through dovecot-1.2.alpha3/src/master . I don't need this turned on all the time, just enough to see how clients do things and I don't need to see passwords. Any tips would be appreciated. -Jonathan

[Dovecot] Enh-Req: Mark As Read When Delivered

I'm under the impression bug-reports are supposed to go to the list, so hopefully it's okay if I put in a feature request here too (assuming it's not already implemented; but it doesn't look like it). Basically, all I would like to do is be able to sometimes deliver mail as already mail into mail boxes. Is there some way to do this? If not, could a flag perhaps be added to deliver to do it? (And Sieve; but for now I think procmail still has much higher adoption, and thus having it in deliver would be rather key...) Thanks, -Neil.

[Dovecot] INBOX stored in AFS

Hello, currently we are storing the incoming mail in the user's home directory, which is within a distributed filesystem called AFS (OpenAFS). Accessing the "mbox" file directly (using the distributed filesystem) works fine with mutt, thunderbird, ... To access the INBOX from a machine, which does not have access to this distributed filesystem, we are using IMAP (UW-imap). This seems to be a problem related to AFS. I poked in the dovecot code and have the following theory: dovecot opens the INBOX R/W, dovecot calls "stat" on the INBOX file periodically to look for modifications. But this does not work, because this machine will stat the local copy (AFS cache) of the INBOX as long as this file is still open R/W. My questions: Is it possible to have a configuration, that the INBOX file is not left open when stat-ing this file? Or is it possible to open the INBOX file R/W only when it us locked? Or is it necessary to modify the code? Hello, I would like to know if it's possible to subscribe to a folder that is on a read only File System ? We have a snapshot mechanism that create a .snapshot directly in the user folder. This is done by our NAS and we would like to give an access to this backup to our users. Thanks.

Thank you Timo, it was my mistake. In 'plugin {}' section line 'sieve = /var/sievescripts/%n/sieve' worked for both cmusieve and sieve plugins. Command 'fileinto "INBOX/foo/bar"' with private namespace configuration you proposed - also worked in both plugins. I suspected that they have different behavior: cmusieve saved message into INBOX/foo/bar, while sieve - into foo/bar as in the deliver log I'm pasting here. But both messages were filed into the same mail folder. Did you try dovecot-sieve-1.1 with dovecot 1.2 to verify? I'll ask Timo about this. What is the configuration of your mail store. Hi folks. I'm experimenting with the Squat plugin. I can execute search commands via direct interaction with IMAP, but I never see the expected dovecot.index.search index file appear in the spool. I'm concerned that I've misconfigured something that is preventing the creation of those indices. [Dovecot] Embedded "From<space>" Lines

Hi. As some of you may remember, I reported a problem a while back where dovecot 1.1.beta14 (as well as dovecot 1.0) would corrupt mbox-style mailboxes by ignoring the Content-Length header and breaking up messages with embededed "From<space>" lines. I recently downloaded Dovecot 1.1.5 and noted to my pleasure that this bug now has been fixed. That's great! This fix envolves checking to see if the expected_body_size (from the Content-Length header) is larger than the body_size produced by the "From<space>" scanner, and if so, if there is a valid "From<space>" line at the "expected" end of the message. However, I also noted that there's a case which the fix doesn't cover, and that's where the "From<space>" line appears as the first line of the body of the message. When this happens, the body_offset will point to the blank line between the headers and the body and not the actual first line of the body. This will cause the stream to be mispositioned at the time of the "From<space>" verification check in istream_raw_mbox_get_body_size and the (actually correct) expected_body_size will be rejected. I have enclosed a simple diff that will work around this by adjusting the body_offset to point to the next line at the time of call to istream_raw_mbox_is_valid_from in istream_raw_mbox_get_body_size. This appears to handle the problem correctly in all the test cases I have. To anyone else who has run into this problem and gotten corrupted mailboxes as a result, I can also offer an mbox checker that will attempt to detect and repair this problem in existing mailboxes as well as inspect them for other problems. I'm not ready to send it out for a full release yet, but interested beta testers are invited to contact me directly. Cheers, --Lennart

Hi all, I have finally get working the quota with dovecot. Now i am setting up the quota warning, with this in dovecot.conf: quota_warning = storage=70%% /usr/bin/quota_warning.sh 70 In the plugin section naturally. All seems to work fine, the quota is calculated right, but seems the script is not executed... [Dovecot] Dovecot pop3 and SonicWall?

Hello Has anyone else run into a problem with dovecot pop3 and sonicwall? A week after switching to dovecot we had two local customers call and report they could no longer download emails with attachments. It turned out to be the email macro filter on the router. After the first report I thought maybe the customer had just changed something or it was a fluke, but then a day later we had the second call with the same issue. For some reason, after us switching the sonicwall's email macro filter was catching any attachments as a threat. I couldnt see how changing pop3 servers could affect that, but I guess anything is possible. I just emailed sonicwall and am waiting for a response from them now as well. Hopefully maybe someone has heard of this before. Unfortunately, I dont know if this was pure coincidence, or if both customers happened to have updated their sonicwall software, or maybe it autoupdates, I have no information on it.Of course to them it looks like we broke it. We just had them both turn this rule off for now.

Hi, in some installation where users using IMAP and Outlook Express I have some problems. Outolook randomly presents problems in messages retrieving, for example: "Outlook Express is unable to retrieve the requested message because the server no longer has the message available.... server response: Fecth Completed" or "Message could not be displayed" error message when I try to view an Outlook Express e-mail message I'm using dovecot 1.1.4 with qmail and vpopmail. [Dovecot] Dovecot and quota enforcement - only reporting?

I'm currently setting up postfix and dovecot with virtual users (mysql), imap, and quotas. I'm setting the quotas using mysql. I have quotas working correctly, and I can telnet into the imap server, and submit . getquotaroot inbox and get back valid quota information. I get a maildirsize file in the Maildir directory. Very cool. When I delete mail and expunge it, the quota updates. However, inbound email doesn't appear to update the quota. Two questions, probably related: What causes the quota (which I presume is the maildirsize file) to update? Is there any actual quota enforcement, or just reporting? Because if I send mail to an account, even if it currently reporting (via maildirsize or . getquotaroot) that the user is over quota, they still can send and receive email. Thanks! [Dovecot] Authentication Error Message formats

I have been using UW's IMAP server and I am converting to Dovecot for Maildir support. When a user fails authentication, or a user does not exist, it appears that the same message is used for these events. Is there a way to indicate that the user does not exist (Invalid user), and authentication Failure (Failed Password)? Clearly these two failures indicate a different error in the system. One that some forgot their password, the other indicates a dictionary attack. -- Albert E. Hi, when the attached mail was stored in a maildir, fetching mail via POP3 lead to multiple delivery of mails in that maildir to the client (Outlook). I replaced the domain with dots. Hello, I migrate my server POP3/IMAP recently the Courier-IMAP for Dovecot and am having problems when the user configures your e-mail client to leave a copy of mail on the server. All mail in the inbox, are brought all the time that you check your mailbox input via POP3, causing a large traffic of unnecessary data every time. In my opinion you should bring only the new mail, unread. Can you tell me if this is a configuration issue on Dovecot? Thank you all -- Att. OK, I am attempting to use the userdb connection to facilitate per user migration to Maildir format from mbox. Here's the first user: more /home/dovecot.passwd health:$1$MCtvt/Tz$FmKqU/cbWlBhKnhc5W.Ko.:1152:1152:/home/health:userdb_mail=maildir:~/Maildir The configuration was set up as: userdb passwd { } I changed this to: userdb passwd-file { args = /home/dovecot.conf } And unfortunately the dovecot daemon dies after successfully launching. [Dovecot] mbox to Maildir conversion

I've been running a mbox solution using UW's IMAP server. I've run it for years. Now do to heavy message volumes, I've decided to to take the plunge to convert to the Maildir format. I am currently testing a single user, and have successfully converted the mail messages from mbox to Maildir format, and now I am setting up the procmail tool to place the messages into the correct folder. I have been following the http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration/MailFormat formula, but now have a question. New Messages are now being placed into the ~user/Maildir/new folder. However, when I attempt to retrieve those messages, Dovecot does not find them. Why not? -- Albert E. Hi, I ran into a problem wherein my mail client (RoundCube) would not display a message from a Dovecot IMAP server (claiming that the message had no content). The raw source of the message looked fine, but the body structure returned by Dovecot only had the first text/plain part and not the alternative text/html part. The message looks like: ... headers removed ... RFC 822 appears to allow folding in a quoted string like this (§3.3 "quoted-string"), so I'm curious whether the parsing is working correctly. Thanks for your help! The message goes away after the first successful authentication. This hopefully reduces the number of "Why doesn't my authentication work?" questions. + Maildir/dbox: Try harder to assign unique UIDVALIDITY values to mailboxes to avoid potential problems when recreating or renaming mailboxes. The UIDVALIDITY is tracked using dovecot-uidvalidity* files in the mail root directory. + Many logging improvements - In some conditions Dovecot could have stopped using existing cache file and never used it again until it was deleted. - pop3 + Maildir: Make sure virtual sizes are always written to dovecot-uidlist. This way if the indexes are lost Dovecot will never do a huge amount of work to recalculate them. - mbox: Fixed listing mailboxes in namespaces with prefix beginning with '~' or '/' (i.e. UW-IMAP compatibility namespaces didn't work). - dict quota: Don't crash when recalculating quota (when quota warnings enabled). - Fixes to handling "out of disk space/quota" failures. - Blocking passdbs/userdbs (e.g. PAM, MySQL) could have failed lookups sometimes when auth_worker_max_request_count was non-zero. - Fixed compiling with OpenBSD Largest changes since v1.2.alpha2: + Added userdb checkpassword (by Sascha Wilde) + Autocreate plugin: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Autocreate + Listescape plugin: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Listescape - All the same fixes as for v1.1.5 I was thinking about waiting for Kolab people's work for shared mailbox support to get done, get that code to v1.2 tree and then release v1.2.beta1 with feature freeze.

Thank u, i have read all in that guide, but nothing. [Dovecot] Problems with the pop3 part of dovecot

Hello, I originally just typed up a 5 paragraph essay on my problems but just deleted it all. basically I need to find out where to start looking to find out what is the problem with my dovecot pop3 setup. I switched from courier imap/pop3 to dovecot imap/pop3. I have had super high loads (40+ and overnight one server went to 511) and its been a nightmare fighting with this new setup for the last two weeks. I did manage to narrow the problem down to it being with the pop3 part of dovecot. I am not sure why the load keeps going so high. The first week I attributed it to users having to redownload mail and reindex (we were aware of the UIDL problem), but two weeks later one of my machines overnight went to 511. I have changed so many config options to try to make it work that I have become overwhelmed and feel like I have tried everything to get the right settings. I am running four 64bit machines with amd 9850 cpus, 4 gigs ram, the mailstore is nfs mounted, the nfs server is using xfs. Debian lenny/sid. I dont know what to do, I am almost debating going back to courier pop3 and going through the week of support calls of customers downloading mail again but that is a last ditch effort. I can understand if i just need to wait it out while things are indexed for dovecot and stuff, but machines falling over and loads of 40 to 500 just for dovecot seems not right. so, where do I start?

Hello, My first time on this list, just switched from courier imap/pop3 system to dovecot. Imap part is great, pop3 seems to suffer, been fighting it for a week. Anyway, the reason for this post is that I have seen these pop up in my logs, and on one of my mailheads there were some 50 lines of this dovecot: 2008-10-26 09:33:54 Error: auth(default): BUG: Authentication client gave a PID 15661 of existing connection Is this really a bug or anything to be concerned with? I just installed 1.1.5. I am using Debian lenny/sid on amd64, phenom 9850 4g ram, nfs mounted maildir format xfs storage.

[Dovecot] Dovecot dies with PAM error?

Just setup a new server on the weekend with Ubuntu 8.10 beta, and Dovecot 1.1.4. Every now and then, the IMAP server dies, and won't let users authenticate. It happens about once or twice a day. If I try to cat /etc/pam.d/dovecot, though, the file is obviously there: jason@tachikoma:/var/log$ cat /etc/pam.d/dovecot #%PAM-1.0 @include common-auth @include common-account @include common-session And restarting dovecot seems to fix the problem. Dovecot WAS running just fine, servicing mail all day long, and then suddenly it won't read the PAM config file, and then it won't let anyone log in until I log in and kill it. Any ideas? My IMAP client is either Thunderbird or Roundcube, if that's relevant.

RFC 5162 [3.1] states that a QRESYNC should return all changes in a SELECT/EXAMINE since the given modseq. In dovecot.conf protocol imaps is set to port 10943. ssl_listen = *:10943 The standard port for imaps is 993. So why it is set to 10943?

After doing one of those selecting works too... The important part to note (and where I suspect your problem is) is that the folder, as far as your client (Thunderbird) is concerned, is "Maildir/", the "Maildir/ new/" directory is part of Maildir's internal format. [Dovecot] mixed client ssl certs and non cert

How do I setup mixed authentication so that I can have say a couple of machines on my lan only use ssl without client certs, but have all the other machines connecting from remotely required to have ssl certs to connect to imap? Hi there I'd like to change my setup to log the _actual_ IMAP user's login, rather than the UNIX username. My system uses a virtual uid setup with qmail, where the mailboxes are owned by the 'vmail' user and authentication is via checkpassword using user%domain (ie email, just with % instead of @). So dovecot is recording _all_ logins as: imap-login: Login: user=<vmail>, method=PLAIN, rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured I have the following log format specified: login_log_format_elements = user=<%u> method=%m rip=%r lip=%l %c I have also tried: login_log_format_elements = user=<%n@%d> method=%m rip=%r lip=%l %c However, this results in a log file entry of: imap-login: Login: user=<vmail@>, method=PLAIN, rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured How do I configure dovecot to log the _actual_ username which the client supplies during authentication? Hello, I have a serious problem with dovecot and mbox format. dovecot returns the same UIDL for new messages and as result some MUAs don't retrieve new mail. UIDs returned by UIDL command look like 000000*1c*49006cec And there is a moment when dovecot stops incrementing marked digits. In other words when new message arrive to mbox, UIDL command returns used UID. I'll show with example: 1. Dear All I have a test system where I am trying out 1.1.4 On the old 1.0rc6 (!) system I had edited: src/lib-storage/index/maildir/mail-storage.h to change: #define MAILDIR_FS_SEP ';' #define MAILDIR_FS_SEP_S ";" so I can get some mail folder hierarchy and '.'s in folder names - this all worked perfectly. Under 1.1.4 the MAILDIR_FS_SEP lines are no longer present. What is the current practice for doing what I was doing before ? Many thanks! Thanks Jose, Yes in the advanced options on email clients there is always a place to put the root folder path or (some similar name) and on the old server I used ~/mail/ in all of the email clients (thunderbird, outlook, seamonkey etc) and that worked fine. Doing that on the new dovecot based server produces the effect I've described - a folder called mail visible at the same level as inbox and the other IMAP folders inside that. On the older imapd based server doing the same thing produced a view of inbox with no mail folder ... just the IMAP folders in it displayed at the same level as inbox. Hi, I'm fairly new to Dovecot, migrating from a POP-only system with /var/mail only mailboxes. I'm currently on version 1.0.10 on Solaris 10, but I don't think that's relevant to the question. I'm a little overwhelmed by the number of configuration options at the moment. I took the "standard" mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u setting in dovecot.conf. This mostly works fine, but home dirs are NFS mounted and in the event that an NFS server is down users cannot read their mail. This is the case even for users who only use POP. So, my question is, do folks on this list have good suggestions for optimum ways to deal with this so that users (perhaps only POP users) can read their mail independent of home directories being available? I think I can make something up, but I'd rather take a standard approach if there is one. If this has already been discussed I apologise - just point me to it as I didn't find it. Hello, I have a FreeBSD 7.1 x86 system using dovecot with postfix and a mysql user database. Everything works completely fine, except that on occasion dovecot-deliver fails. When postfix tries to redeliver the message in about 15 minutes, it succeeds. So this isn't a very big problem, just an annoying puzzle. Here's the postfix log. At first, I thought it could be a postfix delivery problem. I have all logging turned on (except for passwords), and I still seem to get nothing. I've attached my dovecot -n output, which doesn't seem to contain the logging I have set up for deliver: log_path = /var/log/delivery.log info_log_path = /var/log/delivery.log mail_debug = yes auth_debug = yes auth_verbose = yes Any clue as to what could be going on here? This issue is peripherally related to the following thread Re: [Dovecot] client certs with godaddy ssl cert This is running on CentOS 5.2 with latest Atrpms for Dovecot as of this weekend. # rpm -qa | grep dovecot dovecot-sieve-1.1.5-8.el5 dovecot-1.1.4-0_81.el5 With assistance from Rainer Frey (Inxmail GmbH), I am able to successfully use client ssl certs for imap access on both my Nokia e61i and Thunderbird 2.0.0.17, problem now is dovecot sasl and postfix smtp authentication. Using the same self created CA that generates and certifies the ssl client certs in Postfix and using Dovecot SASL, I always get client didn't send proper ssl cert when trying to do a tls based smtp connection from either the e61i or tbird. [Dovecot] dovecot delivery log

Trying to debug a delivery problem recently (with Postfix) and I realized that Dovecot wasn't logging any of the delivery information. I'm using Postfix to recieve mail, which is passing it on to Dovecot's deliver to actually deliver the emails into the mail boxes. In dovecot.conf, I have: protocol lda { log_path = /var/tmp/dovecot-deliver.log } [root]# dir /var/tmp/ total 2 drwxrwxrwt 2 root root 1024 Oct 22 12:30 . drwxr-xr-x 24 root root 1024 Aug 5 08:03 .. -rw------- 1 vmail vmail 0 Oct 22 12:11 dovecot-deliver.log The log file gets created OK, but then stays at zero size. Using: Postfix 2.3.3 Dovecot 1.1.4 (and previously 1.0.9) Any clues as to how I can have a delivery log?

Hi, We are moving our current IMAP based system to a new one with dovecot All I can get about the current IMAP (imapd) system is: IMAP4rev1 v12.264 dovecot version is: 1.0.rc15 In the existing system I can see IMAP folders that are in ~/mail/ with many mail clients (e.g. Thunderbird, Outlook, Seamonkey and horde). These folders are presented in the client software as being at the same level as the inbox - i.e. not inside the folder "mail" On the new system, horde webmail shows the other folders in ~/mail/ as being at the same level as the inbox. But ... all the other mail clients above now show a folder (directory) called mail with the imap folders inside. Is there some way to set this up so these other mail clients see the imap folders in ~/mail/ as being at the same level as the inbox as we have on the old server? [Dovecot] Permission issues with subscriptions

I am having some permission issues with my setup and I can't see where to make the change in the configuration files. My users can not create folders at all from their email clients nor from the web interface. I have noticed that each time I try to create a folder the subscriptions files permissions are set to 000. [Dovecot] Proxying pop3 sessions into an imap one.

I know it seems at least unusual. But I would like to know if someone knows a software that can proxy multiple pop3 and imap connections to the same account and use only imap connections to the real server. I need it because I've to deal with two pieces of software that are out of my control: - 1 - A certified mail provider that states something that I would like to know if it's really true, or if it's worth keeping like a funny signature: "multiple imap sessions are possible. When an imap session is active, no pop3 connections are possible on the same account; when no imap connection is active, only one pop3 connection at a time is possible on the same account. This is a limitation of the pop3 protocol." - 2 - A software written to deal with certified mails that supports only pop3 used by many people on the same account, (and the same account is used also by multiple imap mail readers). I'm confident that the question has been asked before, but I can't remember the answer. I have -- dovecot 1.1.2 -- Mail storage (maildir format) on NFS -- Quotas on that file system -- A working rquotad -- mail_plugins = quota imap_quota in the protocol imap section -- quota=fs in the plugin section I get (using Apple Mail as a client) -- Notification that the account supports quotas -- No information about the size of the quota nor the usage I probably do something stupidly wrong. The WIKI tells me that fs quota support RPC (i.e., rquotad), so I'd expect my client to report the quota to me. Using quota(1) on the mail server works as expected.

Hello all. Ok im now trying to make per user quota via LDAP. In LDAP im have attr: mailQuotaSize=210 Default dovecot quota=201M I edit my static db to this(from wiki): userdb static { args = uid=1002 gid=1002 home=/var/spool/dovecot/domains/%d/%n mailQuotaSize=quota_rule=*:storage=%$M } But in logs I see this: Info: auth(default): master out: USER 5 sysadmin(a)domain.off uid=1002 gid=1002 home=/var/spool/dovecot/domains/domain.off/sysadmin mailQuotaSize=quota_rule=*:storage=M And personal quota not work. Hi, I'm wanting to implement allow_nets so that some users can be limited to only use webmail while others can use client or webmail access. Adding the sql to pull a list of IPs/ranges for webmail only users was easy enough. For the users that are allowed to access from anywhere, do I need to specify 0.0.0.0/0 or something or can I just let the sql query return a blank field? So please try and see if there are any bugs left. I'll make the final release in a couple of days. The largest changes since v1.1.4: + Maildir/dbox: Try harder to assign unique UIDVALIDITY values to mailboxes to avoid potential problems when recreating or renaming mailboxes. The UIDVALIDITY is tracked using dovecot-uidvalidity* files in the mail root directory. + Many logging improvements - In some conditions Dovecot could have stopped using existing cache file and never used it again until it was deleted. - pop3 + Maildir: Make sure virtual sizes are always written to dovecot-uidlist. This way if the indexes are lost Dovecot will never do a huge amount of work to recalculate them. - mbox: Fixed listing mailboxes in namespaces with prefix beginning with '~' or '/' (i.e. UW-IMAP compatibility namespaces didn't work). - dict quota: Don't crash when recalculating quota (when quota warnings enabled). - Fixes to handling "out of disk space/quota" failures. - Fixed compiling with OpenBSD

Yes. I could spend more time testing this myself or examining the code. It looks to me that, with fs quota, dovecot refuses to store a mail (e.g. when the client moves a mail from one IMAP folder to another) if the user is beyond his soft limit. Is this correct/intended? Knowing nothing about the IMAP Quota extension, I would have expected that being in grace was OK. At least, this is what would happen if dovecot wasn't quota aware and the file system would enforce the limits.

Hi all, I have setup dovecot 1.1.4 and sendmail 8.14.3 with dovecot LDA on linux (RHEL5 on x86_64). I have deliberately set a very low quota (4MB) on a test account, while the actual disk usage is 5MB at the moment, in order to test overquota behaviour.. When I send an email to this account, sendmail accepts the email and tries to deliver it. Deliver fails to save in INBOX and returns an error, but the email stays in sendmail's queue.. Any suggestions on how to avoid this and produce a 5xx error for overquota users before accepting the email would be greatly appreciated.. [Dovecot] workaround for shared maildirs

Hello, this is my first post to the list. I have several mailservers running courier-imap, but am planning to convert one (and maybe more) to dovecot 1.1.4. In the process I am also looking to finally implement shared maildirs. As it is well known some clients (notable Apple's Mail) have problems in showing shared folders if the correct private namespace (INBOX) is set in the client, as only folders beneath the INBOX root are displayed. I have seen some solutions proposed, but none satisfactory. As the problem stems in the invisibility of secondary namespaces from Mail.app, I though that tricking the namespace prefix to push the shared mailboxes inside the private INBOX namespace could be a solution and tried the following: namespace public { separator = . prefix = INBOX.Public. inbox = no location = maildir:/SharedMaildirs/Public:CONTROL=~/Maildir/ control/Public:INDEX=~/Maildir/index/Public hidden = yes list = yes subscriptions = yes } note the bogus INBOX.Public prefix. Note also that CONTROL might be better not set as this is a Maildir (see Keyword sharing in http://wiki.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes) Initially I had defined an additional public namespace with the same maildir and a normal prefix, but this seems not necessary. Well, after some tests from Thunderbird, Mail and cone (yes, the courier UA) I can say it works . Still have to check Outlook and Opera, but this is encouraging. As the public namespace Public is actually contained inside the private (INBOX), as if it was a private mailbox (with no messages) called Public, it is actually possible to create such a mailbox inside INBOX and end up with a private mailbox called Public containing private messages AND public mailboxes... Any mailbox that a user creats inside Public instead, will end up being a public mailbox as expected. Thanks or any comments. Giuliano

I have few backup ids configured. these are used only when old mail needs to be retrieved. usually these mailboxes contains more then 9,000 mails. while login to webmail, imap consumption is high, which creates performance related issues for regular mailboxes. to resolve this i have to move heavy mailbox to dedicated server. before doing that, I wanted to confirm if there any way to update dovecot.index.cache even if user is not checking his / her mails. kindly confirm, & provide direction to implement same. Hello, Seems there is some nasty problems with Dovecot 1.1.4... We use Maildir++ quota, and when moving mail to Trash, Dovecot just drop the connection... when the maildir is overquota. Is there any way to avoid that and just move the mail to the trash allowing user to expunge their mail easily without calling support to do rm -rf Maildir/cur ? Thanks, /Xavier

I didn't realize it at first, because we were also seeing other problems (eg assertion failure at line 39 of index-sync.c) which did require the index to be deleted. I've since made the following changes: 1) commented out the assertion at line 39 of index-sync.c (as per http://www.nabble.com/dovecot-panic-after-upgrade-1.0.15-to-1.1.2-td1909850…) 2) recompiled dovecot without optimization (ie, gcc -O0 instead of -O2) (as per http://www.mail-archive.com/dovecot@dovecot.org/msg12936.html) 3) reverted to using flock for file locking instead of fcntl (we'd been using flock with dovecot 1.0.10; 1.1.3 used fcntl by default in a couple of places, so I changed it back to see what would happen) After this, we've seen fewer problems, but there are still the occasional ones: - the original corrupted transaction log error which prompted this thread - we still see the occasional assertion failure at line 1091 of index-mail.c; this is the one that I'd hoped to solve by recompiling without optimization, but at least it seems to be happening less frequently than before - this doesn't happen often, but once in a while we see assertion failures at line 163 of src/pop3-login/client-authenticate.c or line 200 of src/imap-login/client-authenticate.c >Can you reproduce this by running imaptest (on a test account)? >http://imapwiki.org/ImapTest Actually this and your other suggestions may not be necessary; I think I just realized what's been going on. Under the circumstances, are you still interested in seeing ImapTest results and a backtrace? If so, should I do that before or after upgrading to 1.1.4? [Dovecot] Request for help with new plugin

Hi there, I was having lots of trouble with the normal expire plugin so I decided to try and come up with a plugin that handles the trash directory in the same way as Courier (when the user logs out it should clean messages from the trash that have been there for more than X days.) I used the expire and trash plugins as a guide but there are probably a number of things done wrong here and I have plenty of questions. To use this you'd need to run autoreconf for the autotools scripts, compile, make, make install, then add "autoexpire" to the imap/pop3 mail_plugins lists and "autoexpire = Trash 7" to the plugin section. 1. Is there any documentation of how the hook system and virtual mailboxes work outside of the source code? 2. I'd like the Trash cleanup to occur at logout, but the closest I could find was mailbox close. This makes the behavior a little quirky. It seems like Dovecot closes the mailbox each time it performs an operation on it, so when the client gets a list of mail in the box it does a close and the oldest items in the returned list will actually be expunged. 3. Is SAVE_DATE the correct field to be looking for here? I want the expiration to be based on the amount of time the letter has spent in the trash folder. 4. For searching through the Trash folder, SEARCH_BEFORE doesn't seem to match up with SAVE_DATE. Is there some other way to limit the search results to the dates that will fall before a certain SAVE_DATE value? J.D.

[Dovecot] deliver not picking up INDEX setting?

I'm using the post-login script approach to give more customisation to where our users can store their mail. It detects the location and type of the mailbox at runtime and passes it through using the environment to imapd. This works great. However, I can't seem to make deliver do the same. I pass it the same MAIL and NAMESPACE settings in the environment: MAIL=maildir:/home/cur/tdb/Maildir:INDEX=/var/state/dovecot-indexes/tdb NAMESPACE_1=maildir:/home/cur/tdb/Maildir:INDEX=/var/state/dovecot-indexes/tdb NAMESPACE_1_INBOX=1 NAMESPACE_1_LIST=1 NAMESPACE_1_PREFIX=INBOX. NAMESPACE_1_SEP=. NAMESPACE_1_SUBSCRIPTIONS=1 NAMESPACE_1_TYPE=private (plus some others set by my MTA) So INDEX appears to be set correctly. deliver does correctly pick up the mailbox location and has no trouble delivering mail, but the indexes are put in the Maildir directory and not under the indexes directory. [Dovecot] Pop3 Problem

Hi I want to use Dovecot as POP3 server. Config file is changed to indicate IMAP , POP3 On starting Dovecot I get an error indicating "listen(110) failed: Address already in use" lsof -i :110 indicates Xinetd is using this port. What I want to achieve is receive mail in /var/spool/mail, which is going to contain 1 Maildir per user, and have /home/%u/Maildir/ to store (move) messages from spool location. Postfix is taking care of the 1st (delivery in maildir format in spool location), and dovecot should (I want to) be able to read messages from both locations.
