[Dovecot] Moving mail between folders

Hi, Ive just installed Dovecot and postfix and Ive created a whole bunch of folders and started moving my mail around. Ive noticed that it copies the mail to the folder I wish to move the mail to and leave the original message waiting to be purged in the original folder Is there a way to have dovecot delete it straight after it has been moved? as I don't think users are going to take well to this change? any help would be appreciated Thanks, Ilo.

[Dovecot] dovecot pop3 performance, what size installation

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could tell me their results and maybe help me get an idea how big our mail system installation and usage is. For dovecot pop3 and nfs backend, I am curious how many machines I should expect to need. Here are my stats for what I can tell. 5-7 connections per second average, 8-12 connections per second peak. 30-50 constant connections between 3 servers (8-20+) on each server. We are servicing about 14,000+ email accounts. These are just the pop3 login stats, a lot of users use both or imap through our webmail. My question I guess is whether this is on the small side, medium or larger side mail setup, and should I be thinking that only 1 or 2 servers should be able to handle the load. Right now I am splitting it between 3. Should a single quad core box be able to handle this? Not sure if this is a simple question or not. Im not including my dovecot -n just because this is more of a generic question.

[Dovecot] removing uid, index and cache files

Since a couple of days we're facing a problem with dovecot/MUA and multiple appeareances of single mails. The mail is physical existant only once but outlook shows it twice or more times. Then after some minutes these multiple "virtual" mails just disappear. Because this happens with different MUAs (Outlook and Thunderbid) I assume dovecot causes the problem. All mail are received by »getmail« from outside via POP3 and delivered to the users local Maildir. This was working without problems for over a year now. Is it save to remove to following files (will dovecot rebuild them) from every users Maildir? dovecot.index dovecot.index.cache dovecot.index.log dovecot.index.log.2 dovecot-uidlist Thahks in advance, Lars

I initially upgraded as 1.0.rc17 isn't compiled with regex support, so vacation messages that were uploaded via horde were being rejected. (Everything else was working fine, just messages that required regex functions were failing). Horde is uploading the filters via pysieved, which is then in turn placing them in the directory of: - --------- /shared/spool/active/%d/%0.1u/%1.1u/%n/sieve/ingo - --------- At least, it was previously. Since upgrading, dovecot has changed the way it passes authentication details to pysieved and the domain is no longer included in the username, so the domain cannot be parsed and pysieved fails as it is unable to strip a value for %d. (as a quick aside, this isn't an issue with single domain servers as there is a "defaultdomain" option that will force the value for %d, however, since we have 9 domains to deal with, this isn't going to cut it). [Dovecot] Dovecot master process

We are running into a situation where Dovecot master is simply trying to do too much. It some situations, we are finding that there are times in which it cannot service requests. Restarting Dovecot seems to help in these situations, possibly due to the fact that it no longer has to manage its THOUSANDS of file descriptors for pipes to the many imap/proxy processes that it uses for logging. Is there a way to turn off logging through the master process (in exchange for lesser security)? If not, would it be easy to have the master process do its logging using separate threads (which would help on some modern hardware)? Finally, would it be easy to delegate the task of logging to a dedicated process? We are still running Dovecot 1.0.0 at this time, on Solaris 10 servers. -- Steven F. Hello Thorsten , sorry then again ........ details: i got dspam working, it now scans incoming mails and tag them in the headers. X-DSPAM-Result: = Spam X-DSPAM-Confidence: = 0.9984 X-DSPAM-Probability: = 1.0000 X-DSPAM-Signature: = 1,491930ac25229173225906 X-DSPAM-Factors: 15, so far okay. i emerged dovecot-antispam. and thought its easy going , just paste the code snippet of man dovecot-antispam to the imap section in the dovecot.conf . but thats not all i think. i thought now, when moving a mail from incoming to SPAM something happens, but despam.dbug and /var/log/messages dont show anything happen. i did this in the dovecot.conf = mail_plugins = antispam mail_plugin_dir = /usr/lib/dovecot/imap plugin { antispam_trash = trash;Trash;Deleted Items;Deleted Messages antispam_spam = SPAM;Spam antispam_dspam_binary = /usr/bin/dspam antispam_dspam_args = --user;%u } but as told above , moving mails into folder SPAM or from SPAM to incoming dont causes any action the log.files when i retstart dovecot i got following output on screen = /etc/init.d/dovecot restart Warning: Growing pool 'settings' with: 8192 * Stopping dovecot ... I'm using an alternate password/shadow combo to authenticate IMAP users and I can't seen to get it working... I'm using: passdb shadow { args = /etc/dovecot/shadow } Can somebody please give me some hints on how to get this to work.... Thanks JB

Hi list, Does anyone have a working crm114 config for dovecot-antispam? I have mailreaver running perfectly otherwise, but it doesn't seem to be called correctly from dovecot-antispam - the css files show no change. Piping a message to the command... `/usr/share/crm114/mailreaver.crm --good -u /shared/domains/domain.tld/users/pfern/.crm/` works as expected, and the logs don't indicate anything useful that I can see as to why it isn't working from dovecot. I was wondering if somebody could tell me how I can tell dovecot (IMAP) to read users' mail boxes at /var/spool/mail/{1st char}/{2nd char}/username . For example: Mailbox for user 'mike' would be located at /var/spool/mail/m/i/mike 'karen' would be at /var/spool/mail/k/a/karen etc... Is this possible is version 1.1.6? Please advise. Thanks JB

BTW maybe there is no need for a separate 'queue' folder especially as we only need a message signature. I think it can be stored in some buffer array so as the dspam calls are made i.e. during idle time (or during final cleanup at the latest). Also I am attaching a couple of patches that might be useful. dspam-exec.c.patch adds debug-dumping of the dspam reply (it turned out quite useful not only for the stack corruption problem). Makefile.patch fixes the syntax to compile with gmake under FreeBSD 6.1 and also adjusts the installed plugin permissions. Best wishes Eugene

[Dovecot] NFS Unbreakable lock issues

Hello All, We are struggling to find a solution to a problem we are encountering with a load-balanced email setup. Currently, we have a Coyote loadbalancer, and 3 Postfix/Dovecot nodes that then get their information from a mysql database. The problem is that after a couple weeks, we start seeing NFS locking issues occur, which then takes email completely down, requiring a site visit to basically do an interactive mode reboot to shut off NFS so that we can remount the filesystem again. Hello Dovecot users, Finally, after little more than a year, I finished the first release of the new Sieve implementation for Dovecot. The main reason for rewriting the Sieve engine is to provide more reliable script execution and to provide better error messages to users and system administrators. Also, since the Sieve language evolves quickly, with new language extensions published every year, the aim is to provide support for quickly extending the engine with new features. This implementation aims to comply to RFC8225 and it provides support for the following Sieve language extensions: * fileinto * reject * envelope * encoded-character * vacation * subaddress * relational * regex * imap4flags * copy * include * body * variables In comparison to the old CMU Sieve plugin, I added support for the very useful variables extension. However, the notify extension is notably missing. This will be implemented for next major release (0.2.x). The most notable difference is the name of the plugin, which is simply 'sieve' in stead of 'cmusieve'. After compilation, the Sieve engine can be verified before deployment using the included test suite. This is done by executing `make test` in the top of the source tree. The test suite is known to finish flawlessly on the i386 and amd64 platforms. The test suite is not very comprehensive yet, as it only tests the evaluation of scripts and omits testing the actual execution of actions. As this release contains about 30k effective lines of fresh code, bugs will eventually surface. Make sure that you provide enough information to reproduce the problem if you report bugs, i.e. the script and the mail message that caused the problem and/or relevant log entries. It was giving error when running make 'undefined reference to `request_init' etc' then I ran it with gmake LDFLAGS+=-lwrap and it worked and everything is working fine. [Dovecot] antispam plugin claims "antispam signature not found"

Hi, I am trying to setup the antispam plugin using the direct dspam backend. I have set antispam_signature = X-DSPAM-Signature in dovecot.conf and in all mails I have signature lines like X-DSPAM-Signature: 1,49084a24139132188715614 but still, if I try to move a mail into the spam folder, i get the IMAP error message "antispam signature not found". I thought it might have to do with permissions and made sure that the user running dovecot is able to execute the dspam binary. I also tried to enable debug logging to syslog (via the .config file in the make process) but I do not see any debug messages showing up; where should these go? to the mail facility? Perhaps somebody who has a working setup can shed some light on this? Yours, JC

[Dovecot] Renames across namespaces

Will Dovecot ever support renames across namespaces? I'm attempting to support mailboxes under "INBOX" for compatibility with Courier, which I'm trying to replace, while also supporting mailboxes with no prefix. I don't want to confuse new users (who aren't already subscribed to their mailboxes with the INBOX prefix) by listing the entire tree twice (parented at the root and at INBOX.) This configuration seems to provide what I want: mail_location: maildir:~/mail namespace: type: private separator: . prefix: INBOX. inbox: yes hidden: yes namespace: type: private separator: . list: yes subscriptions: yes ...except that, when a legacy user tries to delete a mailbox under INBOX, Thunderbird (at least) renames the mailbox to make it a child of Trash at the root, e.g.: tag123 RENAME "INBOX.test" "Trash.test" tag123 NO Can't rename mailbox to another storage type. I was a little surprised that it didn't work at first, since they're both using the same (default) mail_location, but I see why it doesn't work after looking at the code. Is there any chance cross-namespace (and even cross-storage _type_) wouldn't eventually be supported? (I guess that the big problem is making cross-type renames appear atomic to clients.) [Dovecot] Fetch order

Hi all, Is there a function to modify the fetch order of messages? We have just migrated from Courier to Dovecot and I notice that there is a slight difference in the way messages are fetched in Dovecot compared to Courier. But if we fetch the latest 25 messages, Dovecot will fetch the lowest UID in the list first, so from the example above it would fetch UID 171,172,173 and so on. Courier on the other hand would start the fetch on UID 195,194,193 and so on. We have an internal developed webmail application that has been affected by this change, so I am just wondering whether there is a interim fix while we fix our webmail application to cater for this. [Dovecot] index storage usage

Hello there, I failed in finding the answer in the wiki so i'm asking it here. In average, how much the dovecot's indexes increase the usage of storage, compared to a standard maildir mailbox? I believe it would be a function of the number of messages instead of the message's size. Is there a known aproximated function for that? Thank you. gpg

Hello all, We've recently migrated the mail server used by our 5000 students, from Tru64/UW-IMAP/Procmail/Postfix/mbox to Debian Etch/Dovecot/Deliver/Postfix/Maildir E-mails are not stored directly on the server (except for index and control files), but on an NAS that exports the students' homedirs on NFS. Each student has a 100MB quota on the NAS. It gets deferred... I have looked at the changelog for Dovecot, but have not found a clear clue that is a bug (if it is !) that has already been corrected in a more recent version... Though if possible, I'd like to keep the Debian package (from etch-backports) instead of compiling it from source. Also, while I've found Dovecot's wiki to be surprisingly informative, there are still a few points that did not seem very clear : - should I use the quota:fs plugin in this case (it seems to work out well without it for most users) ? - would it work in v1.0.13 on NFS ? - if it worked, and I enabled it, what would change for me ? - what is *supposed* to happen without the quota plugin when a user has filled his quota : mail is rejected, or mail is deferred ? - and what about imap_quota ? [Dovecot] Compiling dovecot 1.1.6 with ICC

Hello list I have compiled PostgreSQL with ICC (Intel C/C++ compiler) and this forces me to compile dovecot 1.1.6 as well with ICC. Trying to compile it with GCC fails, telling me it can not build with PostgreSQL support since it can not find libpq (but libpq is there!). The funny part is that I can compile dovecot 1.1.6 with GCC 4.3.2 against MySQL which is build with ICC. But I can not build against PostgreSQL build with ICC. Why is that? Does any one know the reason why PostgreSQL is treated differently then MySQL in dovecot? Well... so no way to get around to build dovecote with ICC. I can build dovecot with ICC but as soon as I start it, I get a crash. Loading the core dump into GDB does not give me much info. Probably because I have not compiled dovecot with debug symbols. Currently I am doing that. Hopefully this will produce better core dumps. I will post more info as soon as I get them. [Dovecot] Strange and sudden deletion of mails messages

Hello everyone, I'm having a bizarre problem (bug?) concerning deletion of messages from one of the mailboxes. The platform is set up as follows: FreeBSD 7-STABLE Postfix 2.6-20080411 Dovecot 1.0.13 Webmail using RoundCube 0.1-STABLE The trace (in Postfox logs) revealed that the message has been actually received, and saved to maildir, and then viewed once in Webmail. Hitting Reply in Webmail produced an error, and the letter (somehow) was nowhere to be found on the server! I have no clue what's the cause of this. Is there a way in Dovecot to catch all commands sent to the server, thus revealing who in effect deleted the message? Thanks in advance. Noor

Hi Timo, currently superadmins can be configured in dovecot i.e in mysql as "superadmins" this means the can log in in any mailbox on the server this is a very nice feature in real world scenarios specially for support people in postfixadmin i.e there are also defined domainadmins ( this is for delegate usermail creation/delete etc in the postfixadmingui ) in mysql it would be nice to have or simply use postfixadmins mysql domainadmins in mysql table entries to login for domainadmins only login to mailboxes of their related maildomain this would be also massiv helpfull for postmasters/support people in a full virtual setup perhaps you might get this in dovecot 1.2 before closing at beta stage -- Best Regards MfG Robert Schetterer Germany/Munich/Bavaria

[Dovecot] How do I use plus-addressing in Dovecot 1.1.x?

I'm using Postfix, Amavisd-new/SpamAssassin, and Dovecot. They all run on the same server (running Linux). The mailboxes are stored on the same server in maildir format. The logical path for incoming messages (as I understand it) is: 1) received by Postfix; handed off to Amavisd-new 2) Amavisd-new checks to see whether or not it's spam/undesirable; hands off to Dovecot deliver 3) Dovecot deliver delivers the message to the local mailbox Under each of my user's mailbox is a submailbox called "spam". Just so I don't confuse terminologies (I'm no IMAP/maildir expert), for example, we have someone(a)domain.com. My configured mail_location is "maildir:/srv/mail/%d/%n", so this person's mailbox is located here: / srv/mail/domain.com/someone/ Within this directory is another mailbox: /srv/mail/domain.com/someone/.spam/ The plan is to have Dovecot deliver send a message (which has been labeled by Amavisd-new as spam) directly to the ".spam" submailbox, instead of the INBOX (/srv/mail/domain.com/someone/). With Dovecot 1.0.x, I used "plus addressing". Amavisd-new was configured so that, if a message was found to be spam, it delivered the message to Dovecot deliver, but changed the delivery address. Now, instead of "someone(a)domain.com ", it was "someone+spam(a)domain.com". Dovecot deliver took this message and delivered it correctly to the ".spam" submailbox (/srv/mail/ domain.com/someone/.spam/) Just to emphasize, this process does work (using Dovecot 1.0.x). With Dovecot 1.1.0, this process is broken. Now, spam messages are delivered to the INBOX instead, and, when checking the dovecot- deliver.log, I'm seeing "save failed to spam: Unknown namespace". As best as I can tell, the answer seems to lie in "namespaces" as a feature added in Dovecot 1.1.0. The problem is that I don't understand how I could use them to resolve this situation. I've read the documentation. I've looked at as many example configurations as I could find. Please help. I want to get this working again. I'm sure it's something very straight-forward, but I don't understand. How must I change my Dovecot 1.1.x configuration so that my "plus addressing" set up (detailed above) will work again? Is there a way to limit simultaneous pop3 logins for users? Like for a user that has pop-every-minute running on two different computers from two different networks? If dovecot can't stop it, anyone know of a trick I could implement? Thanks in advance! Patrick

[Dovecot] mUTF-7 vs UTF-8 in mailbox names

(This is about v1.2 only, v1.1 will stay as it is.) Until today Dovecot didn't care about mailbox names. IMAP RFC requires them to be modified-UTF-7, but Dovecot didn't try to enforce it in any way. Mailbox names in Sieve scripts should be UTF-8, but currently Dovecot doesn't translate them to mUTF-7 as it should. Cyrus also did this until the latest release (v2.3.13). Now that I finally today wrote code to do mUTF-7 <-> UTF-8 conversion, Dovecot can finally do the right thing. But should there be an option to keep things backwards compatible? - IMAP: CREATE command requiring the mailbox name to be valid mUTF-7 is probably ok. Several other servers already verify that mailbox names are valid, so I doubt there are clients left anymore that don't send mUTF-7 names. - deliver -m assumes now that the mailbox name is UTF-8 and converts it to UTF-7. Should there be a -7 parameter that changes this behavior back? - Stephan's Dovecot Sieve also needs to be changed so that the mailbox name in fileinto commands can be UTF-8. If -7 parameter is added, it could control this behavior too. Also I'm wondering if in the future the mailbox names in filesystem should be converted to UTF-8. Probably not anytime soon though.. I also added imap_utf7 binary for doing mUTF-7 <-> UTF-8 conversion.

Hi folks - I am configuring a new system and the antispam plugin is the last piece I need, everything else is working. Thanks to Johannes for this plugin, it's exactly what I want and an elegant solution for filter training. But I've been trying everything I can think of for the last 3 days to get this to work, no success. I've got: Postfix 2.5.3, dspam 3.8.0, Dovecot 1.1.6, Maildrop 2.0.4 and dovecot-antispam 1.0 tarball. I've built dspam from source with --disable-trusted-user-security to try and isolate the source of the plugin problem, which is the message at the IMAP client "Failed to call dspam." [Dovecot] problem with i_stream_next_line()

Hello there, I have a "subscriptions" file that is *not* ended with a line break (created by another system). When I do a "lsub "" "*"" the last mailbox name is not listed. Debugging a little showed that it looks like i_stream_next_line() is not returning the last line if it doesn't end with a line break. Is this a bug? btw, i'm using version 1.1.6. []'s

I need to migrate an old mail server running Dovecot (0.99.14) to a new server running Dovecot (1.0.7; as shipped with CentOS 5.2). My plan was to use the imapsync utility as this will "seamlessly" do the conversion from mbox to maildir between the boxes as well. I've got the MasterUser authentication working fine on the new host and was just about to start getting MasterUsers working on the old host. I noticed that the old .99 version dovecot.conf seems to have a mildly different syntax from 1.0 dovecot.conf. In particular a lot of the directives do not use braces and such. Is the .99 dovecot.conf file essentially able to deal with the same sort of syntax as outlined in the MasterUsers wiki page? It's not clear from your response that you understand why it's failing. It would seem clear that postfix doesn't see this as a local domain. Instead, it thinks you're trying to relay to somewhere else. Check your virtual_mailbox_domains file (or database) and make sure it has an entry for the new domain. Does the log show that the incoming messages are actually received? If not, it sounds like you're missing an MX record in DNS. I am running Dovecot 1.0.10 and have it working great on ender.ath.cx (my free DynDNS.com subdomain), but recently I registered lemcoe.com and pointed it to the same IP address as ender.ath.cx. The problem is, only e-mail sent to the @ender.ath.cx works. If it is send it to @lemcoe.com, I don't know where it goes. I get no errors either. How can I get Dovecot to recognize both domains? TIA. Next announcement will be for either v1.2.beta1 or v1.2.rc1. I'm hoping that v1.2 stabilizes pretty soon. There are no huge changes like there were in 0.99->1.0 or 1.0->1.1, so most of the bugs are probably related to new features. I'm already running v1.2 myself and it's gone through heavy stress testing with my imaptest tool, so I'm expecting it to be stable enough for real world testing with not-all-that-important servers. It's safe to jump between v1.1 and v1.2 at any time or even have them concurrently accessing the same mailboxes. Dovecot v1.2 has a lot of new IMAP extensions implemented. The biggest change comes from CONDSTORE extension which adds a new concept of "modification sequences" (modseq for short). Each message has a modseq that increases whenever a flag is changed or when the message is expunged. The client can keep track of the highest seen modseq and request only changes done since the modseq. See QRESYNC (RFC 5162) for more information. Dovecot starts keeping track of the modseqs only when the first "CONDSTORE/QRESYNC enabling command" is executed. Before that no disk space is used for modseqs. When modseqs are enabled dovecot.index file uses 8 bytes per message more space. Other implemented IMAP extensions are: ESEARCH, SEARCHRES, WITHIN, ID and CONTEXT=SEARCH. Added thread indexes to optimize IMAP THREAD command. Only the first half of threading is currently optimized, the rest will hopefully follow later. Added a non-standard X-REFERENCES2 threading algorithm where threads are sorted by their latest message instead of the thread root message. There is also no base subject merging. This may be renamed and become part of SEARCH=INTHREAD extension some day. SEARCH=INTHREAD is still a draft, but the INTHREAD search key is already implemented by Dovecot v1.2. This is mostly useful with virtual mailboxes. Virtual mailboxes: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Virtual Then there are also some internal API changes which will make some things easier. For example lib-storage now allows handling multiple different users at the same time.

Samba has pam_smbpass which is a PAM module that hooks into password changing, and changes the users' samba password (presumably used for NTLM auth?), when the users change their ordinary unix/linux password. http://gitweb.samba.org/?p=samba.git;a=tree;f=source3/pam_smbpass;h=c230a1b… It shouldn't bee too hard to take the code from here, combine it with dovecotpw and create a PAM module that changes the dovecot password in a way that can be used for cram-md5. Ideally it should read the /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf (whereever it is), and find the path of the passwd-file and use that. Has anyone else looked into doing something like this?

I have a feature-request for managesieve configure and Makefiles: they depend on dovecot sources as they are used for build process. I think it would be very nice to have not just --with-dovecot parameter in configure parameters, but also --with-dovecot-includes and --with-dovecot-libs. [Dovecot] imap processes eating IO

[Ignore the previous e-mail, I somehow sent it when I was trying to paste from clipboard] I recently migrated my dovecot/postfix setup to a new machine. After doing so, I have encountered a problem where imap processes get stuck in a loop eating loads of IO on the machine. Looking at the trace (snippet below), it looks like they are sitting and reading the inbox and other folders of certain users repeatedly. This seems to be triggered by the delivery of a new e-mail to the user's mailbox while they have an IMAP client connected, though I cannot say for sure. This had never happened before on the old machine. I'm certain more information would be useful, please let me know what I can provide to help! [Dovecot] antispam plugin problem

Hi people! (Especially Johannes, probably =) I recently switched to DSPAM + antispam plugin combination. Mostly I am happy but there is a problem with calling dspam-exec in order to relearn the messages. Moving messages to spam folder does not work, giving the error message 'Failed to call dspam' to client. I don't know why it needs 1GB of stack space for that. Changing dspam to dspamc does not help. Interestingly enough, launching 'sendmail' in mailtrain mode works ok. Hi Timo, Dovecot fails to start after upgrading from 1.1.4 to 1.1.6: Fatal: userdb didn't return a home directory, but mail location used it (%h): %h/mail:CONTROL=%h/control:INDEX=%h/index Error: imap dump-capability process returned 89 Fatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf Adding a fake home directory to args in master-settings.c:get_imap_capability solved the problem for me, but there may be a more correct fix. Hi! I'm using dovecot-1.1.5 and trying to make the expire plugin work. What I've configured in dovecot.conf is the following: protocol imap,pop3,lda { mail_plugins = [...] expire } dict { expire = db:/var/dovecot/expire/expire.db } plugin { expire = spamassassin/SPAM 2 spamassassin/HAM 2 expire_dict = proxy::expire } I have a sieve rule, to copy certain messages to my "spamassassin/SPAM" folder. Then I want to expire those messages after 2 days (I think I've configured that under the plugin{} section in dovecot.conf). So the actual message saving is done by the dovecot's deliver, but I have the plugin loaded under the "protocol lda {}" section too. So I thought now I just have to wait 2 days, and run the expire-tool, and then it will expire the messages. Now I have three messages dated back to 10.25, but running the expire-tool outputs nothing. # dovecot --exec-mail ext /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/expire-tool --test Nothing in the logfiles, and nothing on the console. Hi there, I'm running a server under Gentoo 64 with postfix 2.5.5, Dovecot 1.1.4-r1 and Dovecot-antispam 20080829 (all are the lastest versions availables under Portage). [Dovecot] Dovecot read only for users

All, I have hopefully a base question. How do you give users only read access to their inbox and folders? If I use chmod 600 they have full access. If I do a 400 they have read access but cannot access their inbox. The config file is the out of the box config other than advertising IMAP and IMAPS. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi folks, I'm using the latest Dovecot 1.16 with Postfix for my FreeBSD box. Since v1.1.4 (if i remember correctly), the following message is displayed whenever starting Dovecot. "Info: If you have trouble with authentication failures, enable auth_debug setting. See http://wiki.dovecot.org/WhyDoesItNotWork" Besides that, Dovecot works great but I wonder what this message is all about. I've searched wiki and mailing list but didn't find anything related. PS: I removed Dovecot removing all stalled files and directories and reinstalled it from scratch. Still the message is displayed whenever it starts. Any idea? Athan

Hello! I just installed Dovecot's latest nightly build (20081020) and tried the virtual folder features. I started with a really simple "all" folder: | # virtual/all | * | all But selecting this folder causes dovecot to panic (in most cases). While trying to debug this, I got slightly different results and I am not really sure yet if this is just non-deterministic, depends on some cached dovecot data or if there is some difference between the debug build or my rudimentary, unpatched debian package (which lacks the debug symbols). [Dovecot] mail_executable's process environment

Hello, I recently had to get Dovecot 1.1.4 to write to a "pop3/imap-before- smtp" db such that my MTA could permit relay after a successful authentication with Dovecot. The 'pop3' and 'imap' processes are executed only after a successful auth, so replacing them with wrappers which write to the db seemed the natural choice. Lo and behold, someone thought of something like this, as the 'mail_executable' directive exists - neat. Upon inspection of the processes' environment I'm pleased to see that there's a load of useful information in there. However, one essential component in my case is the destination network address, which is missing. I added it with the attached patch, exposed as 'LOCAL_IP'. Works for me. Is this something that would be useful to anyone else? -Mike

Hello, I would like to log all IMAP client commands sent to dovecot. The format would be time pid command arguments. I reviewed http://wiki.dovecot.org/Logging and started digging through dovecot-1.2.alpha3/src/master . I don't need this turned on all the time, just enough to see how clients do things and I don't need to see passwords. Any tips would be appreciated. -Jonathan

[Dovecot] Enh-Req: Mark As Read When Delivered

I'm under the impression bug-reports are supposed to go to the list, so hopefully it's okay if I put in a feature request here too (assuming it's not already implemented; but it doesn't look like it). Basically, all I would like to do is be able to sometimes deliver mail as already mail into mail boxes. Is there some way to do this? If not, could a flag perhaps be added to deliver to do it? (And Sieve; but for now I think procmail still has much higher adoption, and thus having it in deliver would be rather key...) Thanks, -Neil.

[Dovecot] INBOX stored in AFS

Hello, currently we are storing the incoming mail in the user's home directory, which is within a distributed filesystem called AFS (OpenAFS). Accessing the "mbox" file directly (using the distributed filesystem) works fine with mutt, thunderbird, ... To access the INBOX from a machine, which does not have access to this distributed filesystem, we are using IMAP (UW-imap). But when new mail arrives dovecot (and my imap-client) will never notice this. And when I quit my imap-client the dovecot imap server will write back its view of the INBOX, and delete this new mail. This seems to be a problem related to AFS. I poked in the dovecot code and have the following theory: dovecot opens the INBOX R/W, dovecot calls "stat" on the INBOX file periodically to look for modifications. But this does not work, because this machine will stat the local copy (AFS cache) of the INBOX as long as this file is still open R/W. My questions: Is it possible to have a configuration, that the INBOX file is not left open when stat-ing this file? Or is it possible to open the INBOX file R/W only when it us locked? Or is it necessary to modify the code? Thank you Timo, it was my mistake. In 'plugin {}' section line 'sieve = /var/sievescripts/%n/sieve' worked for both cmusieve and sieve plugins. Command 'fileinto "INBOX/foo/bar"' with private namespace configuration you proposed - also worked in both plugins. I suspected that they have different behavior: cmusieve saved message into INBOX/foo/bar, while sieve - into foo/bar as in the deliver log I'm pasting here. But both messages were filed into the same mail folder. Hi folks. I'm experimenting with the Squat plugin. I can execute search commands via direct interaction with IMAP, but I never see the expected dovecot.index.search index file appear in the spool. I'm concerned that I've misconfigured something that is preventing the creation of those indices. [Dovecot] Embedded "From<space>" Lines

Hi. As some of you may remember, I reported a problem a while back where dovecot 1.1.beta14 (as well as dovecot 1.0) would corrupt mbox-style mailboxes by ignoring the Content-Length header and breaking up messages with embededed "From<space>" lines. I recently downloaded Dovecot 1.1.5 and noted to my pleasure that this bug now has been fixed. That's great! This fix envolves checking to see if the expected_body_size (from the Content-Length header) is larger than the body_size produced by the "From<space>" scanner, and if so, if there is a valid "From<space>" line at the "expected" end of the message. However, I also noted that there's a case which the fix doesn't cover, and that's where the "From<space>" line appears as the first line of the body of the message. When this happens, the body_offset will point to the blank line between the headers and the body and not the actual first line of the body. This will cause the stream to be mispositioned at the time of the "From<space>" verification check in istream_raw_mbox_get_body_size and the (actually correct) expected_body_size will be rejected. I have enclosed a simple diff that will work around this by adjusting the body_offset to point to the next line at the time of call to istream_raw_mbox_is_valid_from in istream_raw_mbox_get_body_size. This appears to handle the problem correctly in all the test cases I have. To anyone else who has run into this problem and gotten corrupted mailboxes as a result, I can also offer an mbox checker that will attempt to detect and repair this problem in existing mailboxes as well as inspect them for other problems. I'm not ready to send it out for a full release yet, but interested beta testers are invited to contact me directly. Cheers, --Lennart

Now i am setting up the quota warning, with this in dovecot.conf: quota_warning = storage=70%% /usr/bin/quota_warning.sh 70 In the plugin section naturally. All seems to work fine, the quota is calculated right, but seems the script is not executed... [Dovecot] Dovecot pop3 and SonicWall?

Hello Has anyone else run into a problem with dovecot pop3 and sonicwall? A week after switching to dovecot we had two local customers call and report they could no longer download emails with attachments. It turned out to be the email macro filter on the router. After the first report I thought maybe the customer had just changed something or it was a fluke, but then a day later we had the second call with the same issue. For some reason, after us switching the sonicwall's email macro filter was catching any attachments as a threat. I couldnt see how changing pop3 servers could affect that, but I guess anything is possible. I just emailed sonicwall and am waiting for a response from them now as well. Hopefully maybe someone has heard of this before. Unfortunately, I dont know if this was pure coincidence, or if both customers happened to have updated their sonicwall software, or maybe it autoupdates, I have no information on it.Of course to them it looks like we broke it. We just had them both turn this rule off for now.

Hi, in some installation where users using IMAP and Outlook Express I have some problems. Outolook randomly presents problems in messages retrieving, for example: "Outlook Express is unable to retrieve the requested message because the server no longer has the message available.... server response: Fecth Completed" or "Message could not be displayed" error message when I try to view an Outlook Express e-mail message I'm using dovecot 1.1.4 with qmail and vpopmail. I'm currently setting up postfix and dovecot with virtual users (mysql), imap, and quotas. I'm setting the quotas using mysql. I have quotas working correctly, and I can telnet into the imap server, and submit . getquotaroot inbox and get back valid quota information. I get a maildirsize file in the Maildir directory. Very cool. When I delete mail and expunge it, the quota updates. However, inbound email doesn't appear to update the quota. Two questions, probably related: What causes the quota (which I presume is the maildirsize file) to update? Is there any actual quota enforcement, or just reporting? Because if I send mail to an account, even if it currently reporting (via maildirsize or . getquotaroot) that the user is over quota, they still can send and receive email. Thanks! [Dovecot] Authentication Error Message formats

I have been using UW's IMAP server and I am converting to Dovecot for Maildir support. When a user fails authentication, or a user does not exist, it appears that the same message is used for these events. Is there a way to indicate that the user does not exist (Invalid user), and authentication Failure (Failed Password)? Clearly these two failures indicate a different error in the system. Hello, I migrate my server POP3/IMAP recently the Courier-IMAP for Dovecot and am having problems when the user configures your e-mail client to leave a copy of mail on the server. All mail in the inbox, are brought all the time that you check your mailbox input via POP3, causing a large traffic of unnecessary data every time. Their email clients will fail every so often with the following: Logging into POP Server, PASS [09:16:29 PM] There has been an error transferring your mail. I said PASS <shhhh! OK, I am attempting to use the userdb connection to facilitate per user migration to Maildir format from mbox. Here's the first user: more /home/dovecot.passwd health:$1$MCtvt/Tz$FmKqU/cbWlBhKnhc5W.Ko.:1152:1152:/home/health:userdb_mail=maildir:~/Maildir The configuration was set up as: userdb passwd { } I changed this to: userdb passwd-file { args = /home/dovecot.conf } And unfortunately the dovecot daemon dies after successfully launching. [Dovecot] mbox to Maildir conversion

I've been running a mbox solution using UW's IMAP server. I've run it for years. Now do to heavy message volumes, I've decided to to take the plunge to convert to the Maildir format. I am currently testing a single user, and have successfully converted the mail messages from mbox to Maildir format, and now I am setting up the procmail tool to place the messages into the correct folder. I have been following the http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration/MailFormat formula, but now have a question. New Messages are now being placed into the ~user/Maildir/new folder. However, when I attempt to retrieve those messages, Dovecot does not find them. Why not? -- Albert E. Hi, I ran into a problem wherein my mail client (RoundCube) would not display a message from a Dovecot IMAP server (claiming that the message had no content). The raw source of the message looked fine, but the body structure returned by Dovecot only had the first text/plain part and not the alternative text/html part. The message looks like: ... headers removed ... RFC 822 appears to allow folding in a quoted string like this (§3.3 "quoted-string"), so I'm curious whether the parsing is working correctly. Thanks for your help! Why would I be seeing a million of these? dovecot: 2008-10-27 09:12:33 Warning: chdir(/mail/mail/domain/u/username/) blocked for 18 secs Two servers were working fine and then all of a sudden this morning bam 500 load and theres a million dovecots and tons of these lines in the logs. It is like everyone gets up at exactly 8:30 and hits the pop3 server at once. Anyway, dovecot 1.1.5, nfs mount, debian lenny/sid amd64, 2.6.26-1-amd64 i had the performance mode options for login configured, i just set back to the single process per login though, I think that hasnt fallen over that way but I really dont remember anymore. [Dovecot] Problems with the pop3 part of dovecot

Hello, I originally just typed up a 5 paragraph essay on my problems but just deleted it all. basically I need to find out where to start looking to find out what is the problem with my dovecot pop3 setup. I switched from courier imap/pop3 to dovecot imap/pop3. I have had super high loads (40+ and overnight one server went to 511) and its been a nightmare fighting with this new setup for the last two weeks. I did manage to narrow the problem down to it being with the pop3 part of dovecot. I am not sure why the load keeps going so high. The first week I attributed it to users having to redownload mail and reindex (we were aware of the UIDL problem), but two weeks later one of my machines overnight went to 511. I have changed so many config options to try to make it work that I have become overwhelmed and feel like I have tried everything to get the right settings. I am running four 64bit machines with amd 9850 cpus, 4 gigs ram, the mailstore is nfs mounted, the nfs server is using xfs. Debian lenny/sid. I dont know what to do, I am almost debating going back to courier pop3 and going through the week of support calls of customers downloading mail again but that is a last ditch effort. I can understand if i just need to wait it out while things are indexed for dovecot and stuff, but machines falling over and loads of 40 to 500 just for dovecot seems not right. so, where do I start?
