Hello, I'm setting up (at least I try) to set up network services with single sign on. I could build and configure dovecat to use samba's ntlm_auth helper to achieve ntlm authentication of imap users. The point is, I wanted to restrict which users could actually authenticate through ntlm. The ntlm_auth helper has this ability with the --require-membership-of=... command line parameter. I first tried (unsuccessfully) to add this parameter to the auth_winbind_helper_path token in dovecot.conf, and figured out by checking the source that this was not possible. I then decided to patch the source so that one can pass any argument to the ntlm_auth helper by specifying at new line in dovecot.conf with the token "auth_winbind_helper_args" (for instance, what I wanted to do is "auth_winbind_helper_args = --require-membership-of=... ") Well, here comes the patch. It is to be used with recent 1.1.2 release. Best regards François

[Dovecot] tcp-wrappers.patch

I'd like to see tcp-wrappers.patch getting integrated into dovecot. I ported the original 1.0 patch to 1.1, but would prefer not to have to maintain another local patch. As the name suggests, the patch adds libwrap support to dovecot. We use is to limit access from outside our network to secure (imaps/pop3s) protocols only and to exclude certain internal addresses from accessing dovecot in general. I fully understand Timo's concern of people not reading documentation and then whining that librwapping doesn't work whereas they simply forgot to put hosts.{allow,deny} into the login chroot. Would it be acceptable if either dovecot itself or the init script copies /etc/hosts.{allow,deny} into the chroot (unless it's already there)? Also, dovecot could probably complain/abort/turn off libwrap if these files are missing in the login chroot. The problem mainly occurs with the default (Linux) setting of login_dir = /var/run/dovecot/login; on NetBSD, I use /var/chroot/dovecot-login instead, which doesn't get wiped out at boot. Comments? Suggestions? Oh, yes, managesieve (which uses src/login-common) would need a slight update, too.

He used IMAP to access his INBOX, but he forgot to configure this for all other folders as well. Now, Pine modified /home/user1/Mail/Trash directly, and when Dovecot stumbled upon this file it killed itself with signal 6. The problem is not reproducible. After this single failure, Dovecot doesn't seem to have any problems with the folder. However, instead of this panic operation, Dovecot maybe could issue a warning or error response to the client so that the user (hopefully) gets a clue about what's going wrong. Different user, different mail client. INBOX with 350 messages in total, 3 of them new. Started Thunderbird, index page is displayed fine, then clicked on one of the 3 new messages to read it. For no apparent reason, Dovecot dies with signal 6. Thunderbird reconnected automatically, and then Dovecot dies again. Nice endless loop ... Stopping and restarting the complete Dovecot subsystem with the help of the init.d script didn't help. Finally the crashes stopped after removing the cache files in /home/fubar/Mail/.imap/INBOX. It's obvious that the cache files got corrupted somehow. There was plenty of disk space free. And the cache files have been freshly created from scratch with Dovecot 1.1.0. Other folders were not affected. Except Dovecot, nobody ever touches these cache files. Well, the good news is, it stopped crashing after removing the cache files. The bad news is, without the cache files (which I removed) the problem cannot be reproduced. So, there's nothing more to offer than these two backtraces. Both crashes are not related to each other and happened to different users with different clients. Maybe the backtraces and my descriptions help to find what's going wrong or how to make Dovecot behave more robustly. If there's any additional information needed, please let me know. I am trying to setup Dovecot to use the expire plugin and wanted to use the LDA so I can ensure the messages are indexed as they are delivered to the mailboxes. [Dovecot] virtual domains and SSL certificates

Hi all, I have dovecot 1.1.0 setup to access vpopmail accounts for several virtual domains. Dovecot IMAP is accessed through several virtual domains as well, ie mail.foo.com an d mail.bar.com The problem is that the configuration file specifies only one certificate file for dovecot, which means only one Common Name, which means one cannot provide one server cert that will match mail.foo.com AND mail.bar.com, and either mary(a)foo.com or bob(a)bar.com will get a "Security Error: Domain Name Mismatch" in their mail client when connecting through IMAPS. How can I avoid this domain name mismatch error? Regards, Kacper Wysocki

Update: dovecot can't find the mail directory because of mail_location = maildir:/var/vpopmail/domains/%d/%n/Maildir and dovecot doesn't know anything about domain aliases. ln -s ~vpopmail/domains/maindomain ~vpopmail/domains/aliasdomain fixes the problem for dovecot. -K

With 1.0 I had the quota plugin set to allow some accounts to have no quota by setting their size (in bytes) to 0 (via mysql). Following the upgrade to 1.1 this no longer seems to work and has resulted in a lot of annoyed people having messages bumped :-( The config I have is as follows... quota = maildir quota_rule = *:storage=15M quota_rule2 = Trash:ignore quota_rule3 = INBOX.Trash:ignore quota_rule4 = INBOX.SpamTrain:ignore quota_rule5 = SpamTrain:ignore In the sql.conf I get the quota for each mailbox using this line user_query = SELECT '/var/vmail/%d/%n' as home, 'maildir:/var/vmail/%d/%n' as mail, xxx AS uid, xxx AS gid, concat('maildir:storage=', mb_quota) AS quota FROM mailboxes WHERE mb_mbname = '%u' AND mb_active = '1' With this setup when I have a mb_quota set to 0 it simply bounces all messages for the mailboxes that should have no quota. Hi, This small mail to share my observation about a recent move of mailboxes between two servers and ask about explanation and/or improvement about UIDL in dovecot. SV1 : Dovecot 0.99.14 / Red Hat Fedore Core 4 SV2 : Dovecot 1.07 / CentOS 5.2 Mailboxes in /var/spool/mail on the twoo servers. Test will be done with outlook express with option "leave message on server" checked. Goal is simply to move users mailboxes from SV1 to SV2 without re-downloading all messages. Try 1: - Stop dovecot on SV2 - Clear all dovecot indexes on SV2 - Rsync of my mailbox - Start dovecot on SV2 - Update pop setting in outlook and send/receive Result : => starting to download 3000 mails... After some debug, I discovered that UIDL where not of the same format => put pop3_uidl_format = %v.%u in dovecot.conf of SV2. Try 2: Same operations as Try1 Result : => starting to download 3000 mails... UIDL's where of the same format but values where not corresponding... Teleting on SV1 and asking UIDL, last value is xxxxxxxxxx.85878. On SV2, xxxxxxxxxx.85879 was the FIRST value of the list. Conclusion for the moment, Dovecot has a problem with the detection of existing UID of the moved mailbox. Comparaison of first header found from the two mailboxes show ... differences ! SV1 give the following : (...) X-UID: 70570 Content-Length: 1561 X-IMAPbase: xxxxxxxxxx 85845 $MDNSent X-Keywords: (...) SV2 give the following (after first POP attempt) : (...) Content-Length: 1561 X-IMAPbase: xxxxxxxxxx 0000089204 $MDNSent X-Keywords: X-UID: 85846 (...) Observation : X-UID: 85846 is not at the same place in the header. Try 3: - Stop dovecot on SV2 - Clear all dovecot indexes on SV2 - Rsync of my mailbox - Edit mailbox and move X-UID header after the X-Keywords header - Start dovecot on SV2 - Update pop setting in outlook and send/receive Result : => OK. In response to my request for postfix to support dovecot auth arguments I got the forwarded reply. If someone gets around to this before me I won't be offended. ------------ Story is I deployed a webmail with certificate based authentication that substitutes a global master password (http://wiki.dovecot.org/Authentication/MasterUsers) when the certificate matches. The webmail accesses the inbox by imap and reuses the password for smtp through postfix. I configured dovecot sasl authentication to allow a particular global password to be allowed from one IP address of the webmail server. I've got a user with an unusable account. Tbird just sits in a loop endlessly logging in over and over when a particular folder is selected. What files under .imap associated with that folder can be safely deleted? What's stored in all of them? Using 1.1.2. I'm getting the above message over and over in the error log. Dovecot drops the connection and the client (Tbird) just keeps retrying in an endless loop. Using Wireshark to sniff the exchange, it looks like the command that fails looks like this: 5 UID fetch 1:9749,9751:9763,9765:9930,9932,9934:9942 (UID RFC822.SIZE FLAGS BODY.PEEK[HEADER.FIELDS (From To Cc Subject Date Message-ID Priority X-Priority References Newsgroups In-Reply-To Content-Type)]) Dovecot seems to be shutting down after receiving this. Mulberry doesn't seem to have the problem, presumably because it's sending a different command sequence that doesn't stroke this. [Dovecot] Maildir Index Question

We have several hundred mailboxes that have thousands of files in them (spam boxes) We currently run a find command and remove the files that are over 7 days old but still have boxes with upto 60k messages in them. I know that dovecot will update the index files for each mailbox when the boxes is accessed by an IMAP client(Webmail using Squirrel)but that can take quite a while to index. What I would like to do is via a cron job after the old file remove is to force dovecot to reindex these boxes. That way when the users login to the webmail interface it is quicker. Does anyone know if a script is available to do this? Thanks Ron Culler

Hi, Some words about my Dovecot setup: - 10 dovecot servers - each server has some local mailboxes - each server has proxying enabled to seamlessly connect to another host if the mailbox is not local Running Dovecot 1.1.1 on FreeBSD 6.3-RELEASE-p3. First of all, local mailbox access is fine. Proxying works also as expected. Now for the actual problem: Shortly after startup, Dovecot starts throwing errors concerning connection which should be proxied. On the other hand, when restarting Dovecot, it works for a few minutes for at least as long as the FD usage as reported above stays at around 500. I remember from the docs that dovecot-login would require the double amount of file descriptors to run. Assuming my report is somewhat inaccurate and lags behind, I could imagine that upon a proxy requests it would effectively peak our at some 500 x 2 FDs. Thus effectively reaching the 1024 FD barrier. I conclude this from the fact that I currently have some 350 - 450 logins in parallel, most of which can and shell be proxied. From the error message in the logs I got the impression, that only proxied connections are affected. I was not able to reproduce the issue with non-proxied logins to local mailboxes. [Dovecot] Dovecot auto vacation with sieve doesn't work

Guys, I'm running out of hair to pull out ;). Can anyone out there say that this does work?? To me this is looking like a bug and I'm not sure whether it's the sieve plugin or the dovecot deliver program. I have also had no luck the the "reject" sending any reply back to the sender. My setup: OS: Solaris 10 sparc platform postfix: 2.5.2 dovecot: 1.1.2 sieve plugin: 1.1.5 I'm going back forth between procmail and sieve and having no luck. procmail will send the reply to the sender but doesn't deliver the message to the recipient. Sieve will deliver the message to the recipient but doesn't send the reply to the sender. Now if I can just combine the two, I'll be in business. Postfix mail command: mailbox_command = /userM/mail-services/dovecot/libexec/dovecot/deliver -d $USER* * Dovecot -n (I've made some changes from my previous posting namely with the master_auth settings) # 1.1.2: /userM/mail-services/dovecot/etc/dovecot.conf Warning: fd limit 256 is lower than what Dovecot can use under full load (more than 3072). Hello all! I tried to add the expire-plugin to my dovecot-installation (CentOS-RPM: dovecot-1.1.1-2_76.el5) and followed the plugin-page from the WIKI (http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Expire) Unfortunately I have problems with the dictionary: --> dovecot: Aug 05 13:30:25 Error: dict: Unknown dict module: db dovecot: Aug 05 13:30:25 Error: dict: Failed to initialize dictionary 'expire' <-- As far as I understand the hints from mailinglist-archive the db-support is not standard with dovecot and Timo suggested to use a mysql-connection. Are there any further tipps how to use the expire-plugin with mysql-connection (i.e. database-scheme, SQL-Select)? Kind regards, Jens

Hello Timo, I just switched from dovecot-1.0.14 to dovecot-1.1.2 and noticed a significant drop in the server load average (which has become lower and above all doesn't seem to have unexplained peaks). Indexes are still locally stored and nfs attribute caching is still off). I searched the list archives for an explanation of what changed in the code that could explain such an improvement but mostly (except maybe some index code rewrite mentions) found differences in features. Hi all, This is my first post here so i hope this will reach you :) My problem since a few days back is that IMAP doesn't seem to be started. The logfiles says's everything is in order, but port 143 isn't up and Squirrelmail can't connect, i have no clue what's causing this everything runned smoothly a couple of days ago. Im using postfix/amavis & spamassasin. Thank you, Timo, running dovecot with this changeset, \Seen stored perfectly. Hi, I'm getting a lot of the following messages in my mail.err log. Jul 12 11:25:51 mink dovecot: IMAP(user1(a)domain1.net): Corrupted transaction log file /virtual/store1/mail/u/user1_domain1.net/Maildir/.Sent/dovecot.index.log: Append with UID 925, but next_uid = 926 Jul 12 12:44:56 mink dovecot: IMAP(user2(a)domain1.net): Corrupted transaction log file /virtual/store2/mail/u/user2_domain1.net/Maildir/.Trash/dovecot.index.log: Append with UID 4927, but next_uid = 4931 Jul 12 12:45:19 mink dovecot: IMAP(user2(a)domain1.net): Corrupted transaction log file /virtual/store2/mail/u/user2_domain1.net/Maildir/.Trash/dovecot.index.log: Append with UID 4930, but next_uid = 4931 The users get the wrong headers and bodies being displayed in Thunderbird and I'm unsure of the symptoms in other browsers. I'm running two mail servers with two NFS servers for the mail stores. Both mail servers have access to both mail stores and I'm assuming that that is what's causing the problem. I'm running dovecot 1.0.10 (Ubuntu - so I'm using only packages provides by aptitude at the moment). Should dovecot be able to handle access by multiple machines for the indexes? Hey guys, got a question about the expire plugin. According to the wiki, the expire plugin "keeps an internal database (Berkeley DB or SQL)". I was wondering what fields in the mysql table are needed for expire to work. I assume it is setup is similar to the quota dict setup, so was just wondering what fields are required (i.e: select_field, where_field, username_field, for quota). Thanks

Greetings! My ultimate goal is to have fetchmail/getmail poll from POP3/IMAP servers and deliver mail into Dovecot mailboxes. This does not work because the Dovecot LDA for some reason fails. I believe I have narrowed down the problem to dovecot-auth not finding my userdb. But, I am able to connect to dovecot via IMAP in my MUA and preform operations (read, delete mail, create folders). This leads me to believe my userdb is setup correctly. Does anyone have any idea as to why dovecot-auth would not find my userdb? [Dovecot] FTS/squat search indexes built when?

I know that a given search index doesn't get built the first time until you do an actual search on it from an IMAP client. I don't much care about that; I'm the only user, and I don't create new folders too often. At worst, I could create a script to go search every folder once. But what I'm not clear about: Does it then get updated on every delivery by LDA? Or does the index also need to get updated when I do a search, assuming there's been at least one message delivered since the last search? Jay Levitt

Hi, I am running dovecot 1.0.rc7 on a Suse Linux server. The server has approx 200+ mailboxes. Last week the filesystem (/dev/mapper/datavg/dat2lv) ran out of space - causing it to do into read-only mode. When I realised this I allocated some more space and re-booted the machine... Strangely it seems that dovecot is still having problems... It's like dovecot doesn't realise that there is enough space on the file system. Also - it only is happening to a few users at this stage - not all users are having problems sending/receiving emails... [Dovecot] sieve multiple redirects

I got a sieve script like this: redirect "user(a)gmail.com"; redirect "someuser(a)hotmail.com"; keep; It seems to redirect the mail to the 1st user but not the 2nd. Any idea? From what I can tell, that is a valid sieve script. I am using an earlier RC version of dovecot - 1.1.rc4, going to be upgrading soon. There are also a few errors. I assume /home/orders is not needed? Also, does Dovecot go through Global Sieve script and then per-user script? It appears that the global script is not even used if the per-user script exists - anyway to change that so both are parsed in order? [Dovecot] RFE: Disallow DELETE of non-empty MBOX

It looks like this is already the rule for maildir, where one can't remove the folder if any files or subdirectories are present. I'd like to get this option for mbox folders, as I'd like to prevent "accidents" where users accidentally delete large folders by clicking the wrong thing and then too-quickly approving the confirmation dialog that pops up. (Impatient upper level management tends to do this. ;)) BTW, I'm using Mulberry for my client, and it unfortunately puts "Mark contents seen" right next to "Delete folder" on the context menu. I'm aware of the issue so I tend to be extra careful when I finish with the folder associated with a busy mailing list and mark all the uninteresting messages seen.

[Dovecot] bugzilla or other similar bug tracking systems

I was wondering if it could be useful to use such tools to keep track of users bugs. I find somehow harder to search the mailing list if a bug is known, if it's being worked on, if it needs more feedback, in witch release it has been eventually solved, and so on. Any thoughts? Regards, Diego.

This problem is apparently about changeset http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.1/rev/eec74a6ad62e. This change makes dovecot behaviour different from what is described in wiki, about sharing and making private /Seen flags, see http://wiki.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes?highlight=(flags are shared or private) When I've tried to revert it, first time with my client it worked perfectly. [Dovecot] plus addressing bug in dovecot 1.1.x?

I had recently upgraded from Dovecot 1.0.14 to 1.1.0, and then to 1.1.1. Ever since the upgrade to 1.1.0, I noticed that "plus addressing" has failed. In case I'm using a foreign phrase, this is the concept of sending an e-mail to "user+spam(a)domain.com", and having dovecot (dovecot LDA, specifically), deliver this to the "spam" submailbox to "user(a)domain.com". I've been using this successfully since 1.0.3. When I upgraded to 1.1.0, I noticed that e-mails were no longer being delivered to the submailboxes as they had been (though they would arrive in the central INBOX). I checked the "dovecot-deliver.log", and I noticed that, ever since I had brought up 1.1.0, I would see: save failed to spam: Unknown namespace ("spam" is the submailbox) After the upgrade to 1.1.1, I still would see these messages (and behavior). I have since installed 1.0.15. The plus addressing now works again, as it had been. With all of these "upgrades" and "downgrades", the config file has remained exactly the same. There have been no other changes to any components on the host system (i.e., new OS-es, new postfix, etc.). Thoughts? Is this a known issue? - Jon

[Dovecot] nfs_flush errors

I'm looking for some help with an nfs error that is filling our logs. I get a constant stream of these messages: Jul 8 10:47:08 servername dovecot: [ID 107833 mail.error] IMAP(username): nfs_flush_file_handle_cache_dir: rmdir(/var/mail) failed: Device busy I have two dovecot IMAP servers. All mailboxes are NFS mounted. The INBOX is /var/mail and the rest are in /home/<user>/mail. It looks like work was done on this back in January: http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot-cvs/2008-January/010638.html And again in February: http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.1/rev/258477a3f1e7 Was a there another fix that I missed or is anybody else is still seeing the same issue? [Dovecot] Problem: delivery with mode 600 into shared folder

Hi, I have a problem, delivery called from /etc/aliases file by pipe delivers with mode 0600. I need system users with shared mail folders (Maildir format). When I changed alias to pipe to shell wrapper with mode 002 set in it, nothing changed. MTA is sendmail, OS Solaris, and dovecot version 1.1.1. Can somebody help? [Dovecot] Recieving e-mail is not updating quota

Hello again. When I send e-mail locally from userX@mydomain to userY@mydomain the quota in userY@mydomain isn't updated with the new message, but the message arrives fine. It's not a userX problem, because it's equal if it's userY sending userX. When I save an message, the quota is updated. Or when the userX sends the e-mail, his quota is updated too. The problem is that the quota don't update when a new message arrives. What could it be? Now I empty the mailbox of the userY, and the maildirsize is like this: 16777216S 0 0 1151862 1 2837616 1 2838683 1 5674797 2 -5674797 -2 -5674797 -2 1151862 1 -1151862 -1 -1151862 -1 The user quota from ldap is 16MB. In the user dir, the size is 452K # du -kh . --max-depth=0 452K . [Dovecot] 1.1.2 segfaults when using passdb passwd and md5 mechanism

Setting passdb to passwd and enabling cram-md5 or digest-md5 makes dovecot crash. The documentation says that I can use md5 with passwd. I had to use strace to figure it, because dovecot segfaults and doesn't log the error. [Dovecot] Dovecot doesn't read users and passwords from config files

Greetings, I am setting up Dovecot 1.0.15 on my home Fedora Core 8 pc ONLY to access my mail archives across several mail clients. No access from the internet is possible or needed here. I cannot log in with any client, the login always fails. [Dovecot] Server power loss and "Dovecot is already running with PID xxx"

Hi, I'm running Dovecot 1.0.7 (with various patches) on CentOS 5.2. The server has suffered a couple of power loss events. Dovecot is run as a standalone server. The problem is that dovecot refuses to start up at boot because the PID file from before the power loss is left behind. The message is as follows: $ /sbin/service dovecot start Starting Dovecot Imap: Error: Dovecot is already running with PID 10825 (read from /var/run/dovecot/master.pid) Fatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot.conf [FAILED] (Note: there is nothing wrong in the configuration file so the error message is somewhat misleading.) I looked at the release notes of 1.0.xx releases and they didn't mention this. Is this already a known problem? [Dovecot] related, but off-topic: how to allow users to change password?

My dovecot is currently configured to authenticate vs. a userdb/passdb passwd-file that contains, for each user: username:passhash:5000:5000::/path/to/home::userdb_mail=/path/to/maildir Is it possible to let users authenticate and change their passwords? There are some webmail client add-ons that allow such things if users are system accounts or in a MySQL/LDAP db. Does anyone else use passdb/userdb passwd-files like above and have a method for allowing users to change their passwords from the web? Sorry for the slightly off-topic question, but hoping another Dovecot admin has solved this problem. Preference is to not to be tied to any particular webmail client just for this change password feature.

[Dovecot] Thunderbird and Dovecot on FC5 taking a long time to retrieve message

I'm running FC5 (2.6.15-1.2054_FC5smp) and Dovecot dovecot-1.0-0.beta8.2.fc5 with Thunderbird 2.0.0.16. I set up imap (dovecot) so I can access my mail locally or remotely. It seems to take a very long time (minutes sometimes) for an Email to be retrieved after I select it in the folder list and/or in the Email list locally or remotely. I've traced the imap process and found it doing a lot of reading (read() system calls) for a long time. I do have a high message count in some of these folders (i.e.: 20000 or so). Is there any way to improve performance (use more memory, cache indexes, tune I/O parameters, etc...) ? Thanks. -Mark

[Dovecot] POP3 locking

I'm trying to understand what dovecot's behavior will be in a given scenario to see if it will work as a (hopefully better) replacement for the home-grown pop3 server we currently use. User A is on a slow dialup connection, and uses, oh, let's say Outlook, since that's where most of our problems seem to spring from. User A uses outlook to download his mail over pop3. Half way through downloading a particularly large message, Outlook decides that the whole process isn't happening fast enough, so it opens another connection to the server and tries to download (potentially) the same message again. Now, our current server establishes a lock on the mailbox, and when that second connection happens it simply responds that there's no messages to collect... we used to have it terminate the connection, but this brings up confusing error messages on User A's client, and they call up and complain -- not an ideal situation. I've got a dovecot installation on my testing server, and I think I've set everything up correctly; it authenticates from my LDAP database, finds the home directory, lists the mail, all that... I believe somewhere it there it uses fcntl to establish an advisory lock on the mailbox (oh, we're using Maildir, by the way). I'm not sure where, though, or how long the lock persists for, or what its actual purpose is, because my tests show me that I can log the same users in with two concurrent sessions and get the same message twice. It's probably a fault in my understanding of how locking in user sessions of a pop3 server should work, but that doesn't sound right to me. Can someone explain if what I'm seeing is correct, or what problem it may be symptomatic of? Does dovecot even do concurrent-user-session locking? So far I've enjoyed playing with dovecot -- far more than the current server we use. I'd like to use it as our primary pop3 server, but preventing users from having concurrent sessions and getting the same message more than once, and keeping them from seeing errors because of their client trying to open multiple sessions is important. Oh, and I'm user dovecot 1.0.beta3, since I don't really have the option of upgrading the OS on my mail servers any time soon. Adrian

Hi, I use the latest version of dovecot 1.1.2. Thanks to the excellent docs I managed to get everything working so far, but ... I'm experiencing such strange behaviour when user gets over 90% of quota (the threshold is such): 1. user uses say 89% of his ~/Maildir 2. message arrives that increases quota usage to 92% 3. quota_warning is _NOT_ triggered 4. user deletes the surplus message and gets back to 89% (quota_rule2: Trash:ignore) 5. quota_warning is triggered and quota warning message arrives So the event gets triggered when user passes the quota threshold, but from a "wrong direction". I would expect that message should arrive together with the surplus message. The file ended up being owned by the user and the group owner was the group that the user belongs to, not mail. When I create new users using useradd there is a 0 byte file created in /var/mail for the user but I use scripts to create student accounts every semester (about 10,000) so I'm trying to avoid having to add more things that the script will have to create. My questions are: 1. Which folder '.dovecot.sieve' script is copied into? Is it 'home/test' -or- 'home/test/Maildir' or someplace else? 2. '.dovecot.sieve' script parameter ":days 1" means that the reply is sent once a day. Is it possible to send the reply 'immediately'? Kirti

[Dovecot] Dovecot load balancing

Hello, I'd like to figure out how to set up a site running dovecot on multiple computers for load balancing reasons. I'm currently running dovecot-1.0.14 on a 8GB RAM, 2 quad-core 2.66Ghz Xeon single server which runs FreeBSD 6.2-STABLE SMP. . the mailbox format was mbox and I successfully migrated to Maildir only . mailboxes are on an NFS NetApp server, attribute caching is off . indexes are locally stored . the number of users is around 2500, some of them having huge mailboxes (~ 1 or 2 GB) . a large amount of users is using IMAP but there are also many POP3 users . the passdb/userdb is openLDAP . for now, I neither use namespaces, nor quotas nor deliver, nor any plugin, but I plan to use namespaces and ACL to implement shared mailboxes. The same machine is running postfix-2.4.6 with amavisd-new-2.5.4 (no spamassassin) and clamav-0.93.1. I'm using procmail-3.22 as the LDA. I installed dovecot-1.1.2 on non-standard ports for test and plan to switch to it as I read on this list it performs better, load wise. This setup (1.0.14) works great except that, compared to the time mailboxes were in mbox format, the load average (as shown by 'top') goes higher from a significant amout on a regular basis and sometimes goes over the top. On "normal" circumstances, the number of processes is around 1400 and the load oscillates between 1 to 10 and 30 to 60. Most of the time, I'd say the load average is around 20. Every friday a message (no attachement, decent size) is sent to all users : in such circumstances (but only sometimes, not every time : let's say half the time such a message is sent), the load goes so high that I have to stop dovecot to let procmail deliver the message or even reboot the machine. Sometimes, the load climbs up to something like 150, then goes back to the 'normal' case described above. I know multi-master replication is on the roadmap. I know some dovecot sites use in the meantime several dovecot servers. I'd like to know how those sites do the load balancing, the main problem beeing to be able to direct each user to the same dovecot server each time as stated in the Wiki (http://wiki.dovecot.org/NFS) I don't think that DNS round robin would do the trick because some UA (for instance Thunderbird) often open up to 5 connexions for the same user, unless maybe such UA makes a single 'gethostbyname()', thus connecting 5 times to the same physical server ? [Dovecot] Seen flag in maildir filename not being respected

Hi, I'm using dovecot 1.1.2 (but I've noticed this since 1.1.1 which I was using until yesterday). It seems dovecot is ignoring the "S" flag in Maildir filenames, and is relying only in its Index Files to determine if a message has been read or not. I say that because if I delete the dovecot.index.* files for a mail folder, all the mails in there appear as unread. Also, I've tried accessing the maildir directly (using heirloom-mailx, but mutt should have done, too) and reading a new message. The file name was changed to add a "S" to the end, but this message was still marked as "unread" when the mail folder was accessed via IMAP. The flags R, F and T are correctly read from the filename if no index is present. I haven't tested the other flags. Obviously that same folder is no where near 1/3th of our total folder number, so thats a bit strange. I really doubt this is some local setting issue, because then id see much more of those. Right now it's a tiny fraction of our total folder amount, which leads me to believe it's some weird edge case in the dovecot code. Anyone have any ideas? Cor

Dovecot is set up as follows: passdb vpopmail{ } userdb vpopmail{ } I've added a domain alias for the main domain with vaddaliasdomain and email to post@aliasdomain is delivered to post@maindomain and can be checked with pop. However, when I try to check IMAP through the account post@aliasdomain I am confronted with an empty mailbox. If I log in using post@maindomain I get the expected contents. Why can't my users log in using user@aliasdomain to check their emails? Hi there We had been using the stock Ubuntu Dapper Dovecot which is an early 1.0 beta but just upgraded to 1.1.1 to fix some read flag issues with Horde. Previously dovecot seemed to ignore files beginning with "." in the ~/mail (mbox format) directory but now shows them. There doesn't seem to be any switch in the dovcot.conf file to change this. Any such settings are about maildir. Is there anyway to make dovecot-1.1.1 ignore hidden files? [Dovecot] login processes from attacks staying for hours

I'm in the process of rolling out new setups with dovecot on CentOS 5.2 and I notice that dovecot doesn't handle the brute-force attacks too nice. I reduced the limit a bit to some reasonable looking value: login_max_processes_count = 32 to stop them earlier and the number of processes stops at that figure when an attack happens. However, it stays at this count for hours although the attack is already over since long. For instance, my monitoring alerts me at the moment when the process count for pop3-login goes over 20 processes. This happened on three machines at 2 am with a brute-force attack from the same source that didn't last longer than a minute or so. However, the process count dropped only at 7am under 20 on two machines and on the third machine it was still over 20 when I was in the office at 9 am and finally killed them. As these machines are all not in production yet, there weren't any other logins and the single brute-force ended within one minute according to the logs (obviously when pop3-logins hit the limit). Shouldn't these processes go down to login_processes_count (3) within a few minutes? An strace shows that they are mostly doing gettimeofday lookups (=sleeping). This is the default dovecot (1.07) coming with CentOS 5.2. I've been running only one other instance of dovecot in production (0.99.11) on CentOS 4.6 so far and I don't know which behavior that displayed in the past as I just recognize that I accidentally ommitted it from monitoring. :-( I had this mailing list searched for "brute-force" to see how others handle this and what dovecot provides to stop these attacks. I have found not many threads about this. There is one with a bit more information: "Delay on failed pw attempts" from January 1. Unfortunately, this functionality is only in a later version of dovecot and it's not clear if it was implemented or not or if it would be helpful. Was it implemented? This thread also mentions fail2ban which may be one way to go, although I don't like this log parsing approach too much. Does anyone use iptables for rate-limiting per IP on the pop/imap ports to prevent brute-force attacks? Hi I want to enable autocreate-plugin, I downloaded http://dovecot.org/patches/1.1/autocreate-plugin.c compiled as specified in comment and got autocreate_plugin.so but I'm not sure how do I install it. I have many plugins in /usr/local/lib/dovecot/ (it's FreeBSD) and subdirs, but they all have libXX_ prefixes (what do they mean?). After upgrading our CentOS 5 box to the latest revisions last week (including Dovecot 1.1), we're seeing the following error message in the log files. Sieve was working fine with Dovecot 1.0. I have yet to turn up anything via Google for this particular error. I need some help troubleshooting this problem. It only shows up with IMAP connections. I initially thought it was related to SquirrelMail (because it gives me an 'EXPUNGE' error), but after attempting to send IMAP commands directly to the server as shown below, I'm thinking there is something else going on. The system configuration is PostFix as the MTA delivering to procmail in the mailbox (maildir format), with Dovecot handling POP3 and IMAP Postfix is version 2.3.3 Dovecot is version 1.0.rc15 procmail is version 3.22 2001/09/10 kernel is 2.6.18-53.1.14.el5, CentOS 5 There is additional info about the system configuration after the command sequence and log entries below. I've left my typos in, just in case they somehow bear on the problem. Is accessing a mailbox via POP3 and IMAP at the same time considered to be a Bad Thing? 2. I'm helping a friend setup a small mailserver using dovecot, and I'm finding a strange problem with checkpasswd that I haven't had on my servers. How is the following debug output even possible? I'm very interested in the notify plugin, I've tried many code which have generated some errors (coding errors that have been arrived in the .dovecot.sieve.err) but these errors are fixed. CentOS 5.2 Postfix-2.3.3 Dovecot-1.1.1 Dovecot.Sieve-1.1.5 I have setup with: home_mailbox = Maildir/ (/etc/postfix/main.cf) & mail-location = maildir:~/Maildir (/etc/dovecot.conf) I have created a 'test' user to test Sieve 'Vacation' setup. My questions are: 1. Which folder '.dovecot.sieve' script is copied into? Is it 'home/test' -or- 'home/test/Maildir' or someplace else? 2. '.dovecot.sieve' script parameter ":days 1" means that the reply is sent once a day. Is it possible to send the reply 'immediately'? Kirti

I am running version 1.1.1 with mail_location: maildir:~/Maildir. This is working great as all our users have UNIX accounts with nologin shells. New domains (and their users) are about to come online and we would like to migrate to a setup with virtual mailboxes/users. From the wiki and comments within dovecot.conf, I see it is possible to do this piecemeal so both local and virtual users can co-exist during the transition. My question is how to keep things working as they are for existing users/domains (which will be migrated later), and use the virtual mailboxes (and thus, a different mail_location) exclusively for the new users. I understand that multiple userdbs and passdbs can be specified, and this will take care of authentication. On http://wiki.dovecot.org/VirtualUsers#homedirs it is stated that "The userdb can return the mail extra field to override the default mail_location setting. Usually you shouldn't need this." Where is this mail extra field defined? In the userdb passwd-file or somewhere within dovecot.conf? I was looking for workaround, and tried to use one uid for all users, and ACL plugin to give permissions like: --- owner lrwstiekxa anyone rls --- rls should mean read, lookup and write-seen. Read and lookup works, and as soon as I remove these letters I can't read mail folder. Hi folks, with the brandnew release Dovecot 1.1.2, the daemon killed itself with signal 6 (SIGABRT) when trying to save a mail from the INBOX to another folder. The mail client is PINE 4.64. After reconnecting to the IMAP server, the mail was actually copied to the destination folder, but the original mail was still in the INBOX and not flagged as "deleted". They can be saved/copied now without problems back and forth. I've tried to send more mail and reproduce the problem, but no success. Works perfectly fine. Dovecot 1.1.2 is running on Fedora 8 Linux 32 Bit with all patches and custom OpenSSL 0.9.8h. Hi Timo, i have failures like with deleting a folder in the log dovecot: Jul 25 02:12:14 Error: IMAP(.....com): file_dotlock_open() failed with file /usr/local/virtual/.../...@....com/zzzz/dbox-Mails/dovecot.index.log: No such file or directory with short tests i cant see any real problem folder can be created and deleted with thunderbird ( but only with tb-extra-mailbox-sep enabled ) its not a new log entry to dovecot 1.1.2 but this is first time i noticed , by near expection of the log after update, and of course i missed it by playing so much with configs -- Best Regards MfG Robert Schetterer Germany/Munich/Bavaria

[Dovecot] dovecot.conf permissions

Hi, I have a little problem with defining the right permissions for dovecot.conf. The main problem is that the password for SSL certificates is stored there and the conf file is world readable by default, which makes a security problem [1]. It is not a problem to restrict the permissions to 0600, dovecot will still work, but then deliver cannot work as it reads the conf too, but it runs under arbitrary user. So my last iteration is 0640 as permission and root:mail as ownership, but that expects that deliver is run with group = mail. For the long term solution I would prefer to move the password into a separate config file so the permissions can be properly restricted there. What are your opinions? [Dovecot] Delivery notifications

I'm working on an application that is backed by Postfix 2.3.8 and Dovecot 1.0.13, configured with virtual domains, for handling messaging. I need to be able to send the notification (such as "You've received a new message on SomeAwesomeService. Click here to check it out", It's evil, I know) to a different email address, such as a mobile device. Eventually, we want to do other things like clear web page caches when a message is received, or sending IM notifications, but that's for another day. So basically, we want to notify our application whenever a new mail is received, and it can do all the magical things that it needs to do. I was hoping to get some feedback on the different approaches I'm looking at. From what I can tell, there's not a way to deliver to multiple virtual transports in postfix, so here's the options I see: * Content filter I could set up a "content filter" that just delivers the mail to the application, and then re-injects it back into postfix. This seems like more work than the other options just because I have to worry about re- injecting the message * Intercept delivery Replace the dovecot deliver command with a custom one that calls the dovecot deliver and then passes the message on to the application. I've written a little proof of concept for this and it seems to work, but just seem shady. * Sieve Dovecot supports Sieve, so I could just have a global sieve script that sends the notifications. This is definitely the solution I'm leaning towards. Are there any better options? Do you think this will have a significant impact on performance? Am I crazy? Thanks, Brandon

[Dovecot] making IMAP quicker on LAN

Hi all, I keep on hitting this problem when migrating new clients from POP or local IMAP servers (hosted on their LAN's) to my Dovecot setup, which is hosted properly in a data center. People usually complain that it's slower and although they're getting a kick ass mail setup it doesn't look good from their point of view. I'm wondering if there is anything I could do to speed it up on their LAN's. What I mean is probably a caching IMAP proxy or some sort of replication to a local Dovecot server. Is this something Dovecot can do? I'd be really grateful for any opinions on how to tackle this problem. Many thanks, Andrew.

Hi! I am using Postfix, Mysql and Dovecot 1.0.rc15. It seems that Dovecot creates new mailboxes for eg. User(a)Domain.COM althoug in the name in databse is user(a)domain.com ny logging in pop3. How to solve this problem?

Hi, I'm trying to use dovecot for storing mailing lists and read-only access for users. The OS is Solaris, authentication for all readers of these lists are from Ldap through PAM, and one local user "listuser" will receive all mail and store them into it's folders (Maildirs). These maildirs are readable (read-only) for all others and they are shared by setting --- mail_location: maildir:/home/vmail/listuser/Maildir:CONTROL=/home/vmail/%u/Maildir/control:INDEX=/home/vmail/%u/Maildir/index --- Mail became readable because in each mail folder to be shared there is dovecot-shared with mode 064, and all users included into his group. But this is the problem: how to have flag \Seen stored in read-only mailbox? Hmm. I don't necessarily see that as a desirable feature because in the case that something is actually wrong with the spam tagging you want to notice it isn't working right. If you really need that, just don't set an error when it happens and do nothing, allowing the move. johannes
