[Dovecot] cyrus2courier or cyrus2maildir.py, which to choose?

What's the best utility to use to convert mail folders from a cyrus 2.2.13-10, on a debian 4.0 Etch system, to folders that can be used by dovecot? The http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration/Cyrus page isn't too clear on what's the difference. cyrus2courier says "It should be able to preserve message UIDs, flags and 26 first keywords." cyrus2maildir.py says "preserves delivery timestamps and \Seen flags." But does that means that what cyrus2maildir.py preserves is in addition to what cyrus2courier preserves? Or is what cyrus2maildir preserves a subset of what cyrus2courier preserves? Thanx! - Steinar

[Dovecot] Error in Sieve + Dovecot 1.1.3

Hi, when I upgrade my dovecot to lastest version (from 1.1.1 to 1.1.3) and sieve plugins I discover a little problem in deliver (LDA) or in Sieve interface. With version 1.1.1 I have this in my dovecot.conf (and works fine) protocol lda { postmaster_address = root(a)mct.gov.br hostname = faraday.mct.gov.br mail_debug = no mail_plugins = cmusieve quota sieve_global_dir = /etc/dovecot/scriptssieve/ sieve = /home/%u/.dovecot.sieve } When I upgrade, the deliver/LDA stop to work and show me this message (in logs): deliver(acassaro): cmusieve: /home/%u/.dovecot.sieve doesn't exist So, when I change the "sieve" parameter, everything works fine again. protocol lda { postmaster_address = root(a)mct.gov.br hostname = faraday.mct.gov.br mail_debug = no mail_plugins = cmusieve quota sieve_global_dir = /etc/dovecot/scriptssieve/ sieve = ~/.dovecot.sieve } So, I don't know if this error is on LDA or Sieve patch (probably in sieve patch) Versions: dovecot-1.1.3 dovecot-sieve-1.1.5 dovecot-1.1-managesieve-0.10.3 dovecot-1.1.2-managesieve-0.10.3.diff Regards.

[Dovecot] Thunderbird, subscriptions, and upgrade to 1.1.3

Hi, I've upgraded from 1.0.7 to 1.1.3. When I did this, my Thunderbird lost its brain and did not show some subscribed folders. squirrelmail also seemed to have issues. Applemail and mutt were fine. The configuration output is below. Hopefully this is just me and just random bizarreness. There wasn't a problem in 1.0.7 but I could have been caught in mid-upgrade. Thunderbird did not seem to update the subscription file (or at least I could not find the one it thought it was using). Any pointers are appreciated. [Dovecot] zlib plugin nad moving mails, bug?

Hi, Recently I gzipped mails older than 30 days in our users' maildirs. I used find and gzip. Gzip added 'Z' at the end of the filename and everything seemed to work fine, users did not notice any difference in performance (yet :-), and I saved about 30% of our mail storage space. There seems to be a problem when moving gzipped messages from one folder to another though. Dovecot drops the Z flag, moved messages are not processed by the zlib plugin and email clients end up showing garbage. Hello, I have a linux system (Ubuntu 7.04 server edition) running Postfix 2.3.8 Today i installed Dovecot through apt-get (got version 1.0.rc17 installed) and configured it to do sasl auth only, (i already have other pop3,smtp and imap servers running) following the howto's at dovecot.org The thing is that if i try to start dovecot or run dovecot -n i get this message: Error: Can't use mail executable /usr/lib/dovecot/imap: No such file or directory That directory does not exist but why should it if i don't want to run dovecot as imap? I only installed dovecot-common package. Also, i setted protocols to "none". Does anyone know why i get that error message? One last comment. Before installing dovecot on the production mail server i installed it on my laptop's linux (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS) for testing purposes. The testing mail server runs Postfix 2.5.1 and Dovecot 1.0.10 and in this case Dovecot runs fine (the /usr/lib/dovecot/imap directory does also not exist and dovecot.conf is configured exactly on both servers). Sorry, bounced this the first time ;( Darren I'd happily switched to a real cert if I knew that this was the problem. Are you using the cert actually on the phone to validate its identity? I have the org unit set slightly differently on my fake CA and the phone to make netscape derived browsers happy. The trouble is that I'm not getting a useful enough error message from anyone to diagnose problem. [Dovecot] Cosmetic issue with dots in Maildir folder names

Just a minor cosmetic issue: We use the listescape plugin in order to support "." characters in Maildir++ folder names, and in at least the following case, the escaped representation of the dot character ("\2e") won't be translated back to a "." in messages for the IMAP client: | 1 SELECT non.existent | 1 NO Mailbox doesn't exist: non\2eexistent However, SELECTing an existing folder whose name includes a dot works fine, and it also works in other cases, e.g.: | 2 CREATE does.exist | 2 OK Create completed. | 3 LIST "" does.exist | * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" does.exist | 3 OK List completed. This is with Dovecot 1.1.3; we use "separator = /" and we've defined REAL_SEP to '.' and VIRTUAL_SEP to '/' in the plugin. Holger

Hi, I'm trying to disallow the creating of subfolders for some special folder for all users. Using ACL plugin for this seems to work at first glance but is not a full solution or is buggy as it allows the creation of sub-subfolders. I'm using the following ACL and namespace separator is "/": $ cat folder owner lrwstie Note: no "k" permission ("k" = create = Mailboxes can be created under this mailbox) Seems to work: a001 create "folder/subfolder" a001 NO Permission denied But: a002 create "folder/subfolder/subsubfolder" a002 OK Create completed. This is unexpected. Creating a subfolder is not allowed but a sub-subfolder is permitted? If this is intentional, the description in the wiki should mention this. And: How to disallow the creation of any subfolders and any sub-subfolders? Using "folder/.DEFAULT" instead of "folder" to define the ACL does not make any difference for the behavior. [Dovecot] Time Moved Backwards Error Keeps Happening

Hi all, I am running dovecot version 1.1.1 (dovecot --version) and keeps to have time moved backwards problem. I first found dovecot dead without obvious error message, but see the following when restart dovecot service by # service dovecot restart >Stopping Dovecot Imap: [FAILED] >Starting Dovecot Imap: Warning: Last died with error (see error log for more information): Time just moved backwards by 4398 seconds. This might cause a lot of problems, so I'll just kill myself now. http://wiki.dovecot.org/TimeMovedBackwards [ OK ] I followed the above official wiki link and apply the ntpd service for adjusting the server timestamp. After running the ntpd service, I found the server timestamp drift is only 14.333 microsecond, I think which would be reasonable. But I still get the captioned error. Does anyone have the same experience? BTW, I couldn't find the error log message even I confirmed the info, error and debug log file by visiting this wiki document http://wiki.dovecot.org/Logging, does it really not log at the log file? [Dovecot] Integrating Dovecot SASL into Postfix

Hello. I have a linux system (Ubuntu 7.04 server edition) running as a mail server with Postfix. SMTP authentication is not configured so users have to be connected to the lan to download/send mails. I´m considering on enabling SMTP authentication and i have heard that by installing Dovecot i can do this pretty straight forward. First of all, some details about how the mail server is configured: - Running Linux OS Ubuntu 7.04 - Currently running Postfix version 2.3.8 - No virtual users or domains . Every system user has a mail account (to create a new mail account i have to create a new system user. I belive this is called PAM, right?). According to postfix´s website the version of postfix i have supports Dovecot 1.0 SASL protocol. What would happen if i try to install Dovecot through apt-get?. I mean, i most definitely get a version of Dovecot above 1.0. Would my postfix still support it?. Before posting this i have posted on the postifx mailing list and they have to told me that after installing Dovecot i don´t need to configure it as a pop/iamp server. How would i accomplish this?. Hello, I am new here, so excuse me if i am asking something already asked. I am using dovecot 1.1.2 along with postfix 2.6 and a pgsql backend. So far everything is great, until i wanted to try out the sieve implementation. I am using dovecot for deliver and i have set global_script_path = /home/vmail/globalsieverc The script IS working until a given user defines his own sieve script ( for example ) : require ["fileinto"]; # Move mail from my gmail account to gmail folder if header :contains "From" ["xxxxx(a)gmail.com"] { fileinto "gmail"; } This ( or any other script for all i know ) breaks up the global one, and it stops working. Hi, does anyone got Dovecot ManageSieve and Horde/Ingo working together ? i'm running Dovecot 1.1.2 with managesieve patch (dovecot-1.1.2-managesieve-0.10.3.diff) following intructions at http://wiki.dovecot.org/ManageSieve now my Dovecot have ManageSieve available :-) I've setup Horde/Ingo (ingo-h3-1.1.5-1.el5) when I specify some new filtering rules in Ingo, they are successfully uploaded using managesieve to Dovecot server and seems to be working. But when I logout/login back to Ingo, no rules are visible. Previously defined rules are still working with dovecot (because the ingo.sieve which links to .dovecot.sieve contains them), but Ingo is ignoring them at all. also my Dovecot managesieve setup is working well with avelsieve-1.9.4 plugin for Squirrelmail, but not with latest avelsieve-1.9.7 (see http://article.gmane.org/gmane.mail.squirrelmail.plugins/13818 ) : in avelsieve-1.9.7 same as Ingo, it forget rules ! any suggestion ? Hello. I would like to have rights like 750 in my mailboxes (in /var/mail/vmails/domain.tld/user). http://wiki.dovecot.org/DovecotServerInstallations/RHEL/2_Users?highlight=(… I see an option called umask (in dovecot.conf). I set umask = 0750 in dovecot.conf. This option add good rights to directories, but not to the mail received (always in 700). Do you have a solution? Thanks. -- - Nicolas.

Hey all, First post to the list, so here goes, hope I don't break any rules (I didn't see any rules about not being overly verbose) I spent a long time looking for anything that would help me migrate from our old IMAP server to our new one without a lot of client-side fuss, multiple e-mail accounts, and so on. I find that a lot of our users get confused by having two 'inboxes' in Outlook (one local, unused, and one IMAP), so I figured the easier I could make it, the better. I figured there must be some way to do what I was looking for, but I couldn't find it, so I hacked up a little something to do the job. As the saying goes, it's nasty, brutish, and short, but in my tests it's done everything I needed it to. The problem: Our old mail system is hosted by another company, outsourced before I was hired, so I don't have access to the old user/ passwd database, nor to their e-mail store; thus, I cannot do a clean, simple migration by upgrading in-place as I have done on other servers. The solution IMAP authentication proxying. The idea is that I don't need to know the password, because the user's mail client knows the password, so all I need is for it to tell me, and then I can create their user. That is what this script is for. To use, set up your authentication backend (passdb) first, and then after that section, add a 'passdb checkpassword' section containing this script. Thus, the following will happen. 1. Valid users who log into your system will be authenticated as you would expect. 2. Users who could not be authenticated will fall through to the checkpassword section 3. Checkpassword will look for the user in the password database; if they exist, it is assumed that it is a valid user, but incorrect password, and checkpassword fails the user as well. 4. If the user is not currently in the database, it will initiate an IMAP4 connection to the remote host specified. If it succeeds in logging in to the remote host, then we assume that the user is a valid user and can be migrated to the local server. They are added to the database, along with their password. It then **fails the user's login regardless** 5. It /logs the username and password into the database/ so that another process can use that information to migrate their e-mail over to the new server (not yet implemented). 6. If the IMAP connection fails, the login is failed as well, and dovecot continues as normal until it has exhausted all other passdb backends. Interested? A few things to note about the script: 1. It's a brutal hack. Really, ugly stuff. However, it gets the job done, if your system is similar enough to mine. 2. It only works on MySQL. I only use MySQL in our system, so there's no point for me to add other DBs, nor any way to test. 3. It doesn't support remote servers using SSL. Our current system doesn't use it, so again, it's hard to test. 4. It does not currently migrate mailboxes. I'm working on this (see below). 5. If your schema is at all different from mine, you will likely have to rewrite all of the SQL. There's not much I can do about this. 6. If your backend database doesn't use MySQL, you're largely boned. Exception: rewrite add_user() to do whatever you need to do to add users to your system. 7. The script will **ALWAYS RETURN A FAILED LOGIN TO DOVECOT**. This is because there are too many variables on every configuration, and writing code for all of them is absurd. This way, the user's first login will always fail, and their second login will always succeed. If you want to avoid this, place your normal passdb authentication **both before and after this checkpassword section**. That way, it will check once, fail, pass to checkpassword, and then check again, success. TODO: 1. Make it not ugly. Break more junk off into functions (e.g. IMAP verification) 2. Send the user an e-mail ('Welcome to the server, sorry your mail is gone, we'll fix that soon') 3. Spawn another process to run imapsync in the background to migrate the user's old mailboxes over. This would be very site-dependent, as there are a lot of variables. It might be best done as a cronjob that polls the database every however often (1 minute? 2 minutes?) or a daemon that sits in the background watching the db for changes, or even accepting the data directly. 4. [Dovecot] authorizing users

Im trying to clarify if I understand correctly about authorizing users. "The simplest login method is sending the user login info in plain text and allowing access only to users that already have UNIX access (ie. in /etc/passwd) to the machine dovecot is running on." Im using fetchmail postfix dovecot on my own personal computer to get my mail from two servers. What Im wanting to understand is, is this saying that since I am already a user on my own system, that by using /etc/passwd that I would use my username and password in say thunderbird to login to dovecot to get my mail?

I can provide more information if you ask soon, but I can't keep this server broken for too long.

[Dovecot] Authentication problems

Hi there, I'm in a bit of a dilemma and wonder if anyone can help. Over the weekend I bought a new dedicated server and moved my mail/web over to it. I'd used the Sarge[1] tutorial at workaround.org for the old server and as I'd wanted to move to Dovecot for a while I decided to use their Etch[2] tutorial for the new one. For the most part everything's working nicely, but I seem to be having problems with (mostly non-SSL) SMTP authentication. In this install Postfix passes SASL authentication to Dovecot. For most clients using SSL this works fine, but as soon as SSL is off it fails. This is despite having disable_plaintext_auth set to 'no'. Furthermore it appears that some clients w/SSL are also failing. Outlook being the major culprit. I'm completely stumped. I've pasted a copy of the output from dovecot -n below. Thanks in advance! [Dovecot] "pam_start() failed: system error" with dovecot 1.1.2, cause unknown

I would guess this is unlikely to be dovecot's fault, but I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas of what might have happened based on the evidence. My best guess is some kind of resource limit was reached but I don't see any evidence in the logs, and the condition is now gone. Suddenly this morning, one (and only one) of my dovecot servers decided to start failing all logins since 08:25:04 until we restarted dovecot, at which point they were working fine. The number of imap-login processes was under the limit, but there were some obvious PAM errors at the time. My account could still ssh to the system so I don't think it was a problem general authentication, and NIS on other systems was working fine. No one was logged into that server at the time the problems occurred, and I don't think anything happened to the actual pam libraries to make them missing since dovecot worked after a restart. IBM recently changed both its delivery package for OpenSSL and the locations it put things. Hi, I have question about how to setup ldap-lookups in dovecot. I have done my homework by googling and reading documention and sample configuration files. But cant resolve this issue. Background: I have setup postfix and dovecot. Postix is configured to ldap alias maps and is delivering mails to /var/spool/vmail/username/Maildir correctly . Username is ldap attribute sAMAccountName from active directory. Goal: To use dovecots sieve plugin I have to setup postfix to use dovecots deliver. Changed postfix main.cf to virtual_transport = dovecot and master.cf to include lines: dovecot unix - n n - - pipe flags=DRhu user=vmail:mail argv=/usr/lib/dovecot/lda/deliver -d ${recipient} Problem is that mail get delivered to /var/spool/vmail/users.email@address , not folder named as ldap attribute sAMAccountNameas it should. The question is: How I can configure deliver to do map email address to ldap attribute sAMAccountName? Second question is can I use ldap groups as distribution lists whit deliver? Hi all, Imagine an NFS mounted read-only file system containing directories full of plain mboxes. Any recommendations on how to approach the access with dovecot? I believe all NFS recommended options apply, how about index/cache files though? Can I switch them off deliberately for good? Performance degradation is not an issue. [Dovecot] Autocreating INBOX only

I would like deliver not to automatically create subfolders for mails addressed to user+some_strange_name(a)domain.com, but nevertheless automatically create INBOX for new users. I'm not sure whether a new option like -M or -m -m would be appropriate, i.e., whether anyone needs the current -m behaviour. It looks to me like one would need to change mailbox_open_or_create_synced() if (box != NULL || no_mailbox_autocreate) return box; to something like (assuming an enum mailbox_autocreate {_never,_inbox,_always} if (box != NULL) return box; if (mailbox_autocreate == mailbox_autocreate_never || strcasecmp (mailbox, "INBOX") != 0) return NULL;

We do it the same and it works fine, however we do it by inbound port (because we're behind some loadbalancers that can do port translation. We create a port -> domain mapping table and then you can just do the join with "where port = '%a'" (dovecot 1.1 only). Seems a little neater than the per-ip solution if you're in a loadbalanced environment. I don't see why you need the group by or having statements (assuming you have normalized tables). [Dovecot] How do I move delete messages to Trash?

I've recently replaced courier-imap with dovecot - mainly for performance benefits. All of my users in the office use Outlook Express. It appears that dovecot has no facility to move deleted messages to a Trash folder - where they can be removed after a specified time with a cronjob. Other mail clients seem to have an option to specify a Trash folder. I see that there's a deleted-to-trash plugin at http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/deleted-to-trash but I've got no idea as to how I'd implement this. Could somebody please give me some pointers? I realise that OE might not be the best mail client for implementing IMAP but that's what everyone in the office uses!

My existing pop3/imap environment is courier imap + vpopmail + qmail with MySQL backend. I'm looking at migrating this to Dovecot. Currently I have multiple instances of Courier bound to different loopback IPs (the IPs correspond with the virtual IPs on a server load balancer). When a user authenticates they don't have to specify a domain - if they don't, Courier will use a 'default' domain (defined in the Courier config for that instance). Moving to Dovecot I want to avoid having to running an instance of Dovecot listening on each loopback IP, but still handle usernames that may not have the domain component. I wasn't able to find any examples showing how to achieve this exactly, so came up with the following solution: 1. create a new 2 column SQL table: 'domain', 'IP' - this allows me to map between the local Dovecot IP and the 'default' domain 2. create a (rather ugly looking) sql query that combines data from both the vpopmail table and the new table The SQL query is as follows: SELECT IF('%d' = '',dovecot.domain,'%d') AS authdomain, CONCAT(pw_name, '@', pw_domain) AS user, pw_passwd AS password, pw_dir AS userdb_home, 89 AS userdb_uid, 89 AS userdb_gid FROM vpopmail, dovecot_authmap AS dovecot WHERE pw_name = '%n' AND dovecot.local_ip = SUBSTRING_INDEX('%l', ':', -1) GROUP BY pw_domain HAVING pw_domain = authdomain NOTE: I'm prefetching userdb info This works, however I'd like to know what others think of this approach, and whether there is a better way to achieve what I require. [Dovecot] GETQUOTAROOT (part 2)

Hello, I'm a recent convert to dovecot from courier-imap and the performance has certainly improved. I'm running the vanilla 1.0.7 version that came with the CentOS 5.2 x86_64 distro. I've come across a similar problem that was posted by Ralf Hildebrandt earlier this year under the same subject, but that thread just seems to have died off. I'm also using per- user maildirsize files (originally run under courier-imap) but these are not being read/enforced/updated for some users. After some testing with these users, the problem seems to be related to the size of the maildirsize file itself. A file size greater than 5119 bytes results in no quota for the INBOX of the user, and the file seems to be ignored entirely by dovecot. I guess the solution to this is to just copy over a fresh (i.e. empty save for the limit line) maildirsize file, but I was wodering if this maildirsize size limit is some innate property of dovecot. Would not others, especially converts from courier-imap that also use maildirsize files, have this experience also? Thank you. Patrick

I try to set up multiple Dovecot instances running at the same time. Goal is to provide IMAPS with a valid SSL Certificate on selected IP Addresses. To reach this i want to set it up as follows: 1 Dovecot Daemon listening on localhost (for webmail), providing LDA and Authentification (over MySQL) 4 Dovecot Daemons listening on each IP Address, querying the localhost daemon for authentification Just for your Information: I replaced all real data with placeholders, like the IP Address of my Server with MY_IP. Hi All, Is it possible when using Dovecot and MySQL to tell dovecot maildir:%h/MailDir -- Yes I know but please read on before you answer this one :-> We have users directories layer structured because of the filesystems 32k directory limit , eg: user foobar(a)example.com's home mail directory is: /mailhosts/example.com/f/fo/foo/foobar I know Dovecot takes maildir:%d/%u/MailDir but as you see this will not work, so I guess I'm after the defination of %h, is that home as in system users home, or home as is like our setup? Or, is there yet another way we could have Dovecot access the users mail, we need to ove away from our current <insert_wellknown_pop3/imap> setup as it is just to slow, and I know dovecot has a 30 fold increase on speed over it from talknig to other people, but none of them do anymore then the /domain/user setup so cant help me. Hello, everyone. To make life for our operations team easier I am looking at setting up a mail mirror of any email which gets sent from certain machines. My current ideas go along the following lines: Each machine will use the Postfix "always_bcc" option and set it to an address like mailmirror(a)mailmirror.openlane.com. On mailmirror I am looking at setting up Dovecot with public folders and a number of users, which probably will authenticate via Active Directory. I intend to create a main public folder called MailMirror and then underneath sub folders based on the sender email address in a format of like "<sender>_<domain>". Now the sub folders need to be created automatically when it doesn't exist yet. I think the best way to tie this in between Postfix and Dovecot is to use an alias in Postfix for mailmirror(a)mailmirror.openlane.com which will check if a public folder exist or not. It will create the folder and then deliver the message to the folder (maybe via safecat http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2007-November/026661.html) Anyone got input or suggestion about my plans? Hi everyone, Our company has decided to make a fake POP3 (and possibly IMAP) server, which accepts any user name and password combination and shows there are no new messages. This is for the purpose that when our mail cluster passes out, we can redirect our clients to this server while we fix our mail system. This way we can prevent our users from getting errors. We are using the latest dovecot server with Ubuntu (currently), but perhaps will migrate to CentOS (if this is important) I am trying to use the following configuration for testing, but it doesn't seem to work (don't laugh :) ) -------8<------------ passdb pam { args = dovecot } userdb static { args = uid=0 gid=0 home=/var/mail/empty allow_all_users=yes } -------8<------------ cat /etc/pam.d/dovecot: ------------------- #%PAM-1.0 auth required pam_permit.so ------------------- I will be very thankful for pointing the way to do this and any thoughts. Hi, I've just completed a migration from Courier to a Dovecot 1.0.7 (patched RHE 5) which is working great, except for this weirdness of an issue that is impacting a handful of users. My question is that will turning off maildir_copy_preserve_filename help or hurt in a situation where there are multiple servers with their own local INDEX files (uidlist is shared)? The problem is that a few users on a few versions of Microsoft Mail clients are not showing a few messages. They can see the messages just fine in webmail and other, more typical, E-mail clients. I know that the right solution is to upgrade to 1.1.2 and use shared indexes. The plan is to upgrade in a month or so. In my defense, this setup was not of my making, The two things issues that might have an impact are that we have shared (NFS) maildirs on multiple servers with their own local indexes and maildir_copy_preserve_file turned on. The uidlist (CONTROL) is shared and we have sticky connections turned on in our load balancer. The vast majority of clients do not have this issue. Quite frankly I have no idea these clients are ignoring the dovecot-uidlist. Would turning off maildir_copy_preserve_filename help with this setup? Another option might be easier is to delete the users INDEX and let the clients rebuild them. Since this is only a handful of users and we are migrating to 1.1.2 anyway, my preference is to make the bare minimum of changes to help address this problem. The changes need not be perfect nor anytime more than a suggestion or preference. I just want to make things better for a little while. Many thanks in advance. ---Jack P.S. How can I do this with Sieve? The only other alternative I see is that I have to create an alias that contains those two addresses, and then I redirect to that alias -- but I would prefer if I can do this through sieve itself. Hi, I am getting the following error: dovecot: Jul 23 18:04:44 Error: child 7600 (imap) killed with signal 10 How to reproduce: Try to delete or move a mail to another folder. The mail actually gets copied to the other folder but the original isn't removed (when using webmail). If using thunderbird this ends up in an infinite loop creating new mails in the destination folder (without deleting the original) until stopped manually. [Dovecot] Deliver autocreate with auto-subscribe?

Hello, I'm using dovecot with postfix configured for address extensions, so email to me+folder(a)mydomain.com <me%2Bfolder(a)mydomain.com>, automatically is handed off to dovecot deliver, which sees there is no folder called "folder" and autocreates it. This is brilliant, as it means I can give out subject orrientated email addresses, and the mail is automatically put in the right mailbox :) I love dovecot with postfix. However, my problem is my IMAP client (roundcube and HordeIMP) does not see the newly created folder. I have to manually subscribe it in the webmail client, or I have to add the folder to the "subscriptions" file in my home dir. So my question is, can the deliver command which auto-creates this folder, also add it to the subscriptions file? [Dovecot] Sorting a folder (by THREAD) takes a long time

My email workflow with Dovecot is that mail gets delivered to INBOX, where I handle it and then move it into a folder called archive. I have alpine set to use the Default sort of "THREAD" of a folder. After moving a (few) mail(s) from INBOX to archive, archive takes a long time (10-50s) to load while alpine tells me: [Sorting "archive" ... ] (I can do the IMAP traces, but I figure alpine's terminology is going to be so similar to IMAP terminology that it should be straightforward enough for Timo to know what I'm talking about.) I don't actually know enough about Dovecot to say for sure what makes this slow, but maybe it's just indexes not being updated? What might be making this slow, and what hope is there for it being fast? (-: It seems like the really nice thing to do would be, after the save, in the background examine the archive folder and update whatever caches need to be updated. The more work that happens while I'm not waiting, the happier I'll be! (Same goes for my mom, and the other less-technical users of Dovecot.) Is this the kind of thing I could write a plugin for...? -- Asheesh. -- It seems to make an auto driver mad if he misses you.

When old indexes (1.0.15) were present, mailboxes with UID validity problems did not fix themselves, but after i removed index directories in all machines, seems like it started to repair uid validity problems. The first panic seems to be tied to UID validity problems. Hi All My first post to the list, so "hello world"! Having searched the list archives and the wiki for an answer to this, I don't think it is possible. However, let me ask nonetheless... Is it possible for a Dovecot proxy's login process (IMAP and POP3) to include the "destuser", i.e. the uid used to authenticate to the backend IMAP/POP3 server, in its logging? "%u" gives me the uid provided by the client of course, but it would useful for my purposes to catch the "destuser" in the same log line. The only way to get the proxy to log "destuser" at all, as far as I can figure out, is to enable "auth debug" - not something I want to do in a production environment. Hello again. Just thought I'd ask and see if it would be possible to get this sometime in the future: TLS and SSL connection information in a variable like %c today, but more exhaustive. For example I can from postfix get a log like: postfix/smtpd[432]: Anonymous TLS connection established from xxxxxx: TLSv1 with cipher DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA (256/256 bits) This would be nice to see if you have a fairly low permissive level, to identify potential weak clients and be able to notify these to start with while still allowing connections. -Roger

On the wiki: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Zlib I think there should be a step 5.0. along the lines of "get and remember the original message file's mtime" And a step 5.4 like "Using the touch command or some other method, set the now compressed message's mtime back to the mtime of the original message file." To preserve the message's internal time in case the indices ever get rebuilt. Does this sound right?

I'm using Dovecot 1.0.10 on Ubuntu 8.04, using the packages from the distro; exim4 is my MTA and it's configured according to the instructions in the wiki, everything is working fine for delivery into the Maildir INBOX via Dovecot's LDA and reading mail via IMAP using Thunderbird. My habit on previous mail systems was to create a Lists folder and subfolders under Lists for each mailing list I subscribe to. I tried to use Dovecot sieve to sort mail into the folders with sieve filters like require "fileinto"; if header :contains "Subject" "[NCCC]" { fileinto "Lists/NCCC"; } else { keep; } I created Lists/NCCC via Thunderbird (so I could set the "check this folder for new mail property") but when Dovecot tries to deliver into the folder, I get the log message msgid=<...>: Couldn't open mailbox Lists/NCCC: Invalid mailbox name If I use just fileinto "NCCC"; it works fine, going into a NCCC folder not in a subfolder as expected. Is there some other syntax for specifying folder/subfolder names in Dovecot sieve, or do I just have to live with the folders all at the top level? After looking at the way Maildir represents subfolders, I changed the sieve line from fileinto "Lists/NCCC"; to fileinto "Lists.NCCC"; and now it files into the NCCC subfolder of Lists as I wanted. I'm not sure whether this is the expected behavior or just an accident that plugging that string into the file name happens to result in the right name. I haven't tried, but if it's just passing the fileinto argument along with minimal inspection, I'm afraid the answer might be use "Lists/NCCC" if mail is in mbox format but "Lists.NCCC" if mail is in Maildirs, and it certainly seems that users editing their sieve scripts shouldn't have to know that. I have recently installed new untangle firewalls ( untangle.com) in Bridge mode at two office locations. Both offices collect mail from a Fedora 9, postfix,dovecot server at location #1. Since the install of the untangles i have been plagued by Thunderbird Errors while trying to POP email. The error says "RETR" command failed. If the user logs into the webmail (Squirrelmail) on the mail server and cleans out his inbox by deleting all existing mail, T-Bird starts operating again. This error has repeated itself without a pattern i can identify dozens of time over the last few weeks. No other email client displays errors. Hi! Do you guys/girls (whichever you prefer) know if it's possible (i.e. in some semitransparent/easy way) to incorporate an online backup system? If the mail is older than a set amount of days it gets compressed. I want my mail storage size to shrink but on the other hand I want to keep the mails I get and have them easily readable :) I'm thinking of symlinks and some kind of gzip fuse filesystem... I am trying to setup LDA with qmail/vpopmail to use the expire plugin and I am getting errors about auth-master (Can't connect to auth server at /usr/local/var/run/dovecot/auth-master: No such file or directory) The auth default section of the dovecot.conf is set to use vpopmail(mysql) and that works great for IMAP access. Can anyone share a config for using the expire plugin with qmail/vpopmail? I was wanting to put the preline commands in the .qmail-default files on a per-domain basis. /home/vpopmail/domains/domain1.com/.qmail-default But to start I tried just putting it into the .qmail file for an individual user. Hi Guys, Our ISP who is hosting our email, recently moved our domain's email onto a new mail server, which is apparently running Dovecot, and has support for IMAP. * OK Dovecot ready. Most of the email clients have not had a problem moving from the old server to the new server. But some have! Including the iPhone users. The problem is that the INBOX is not directly accessible through the email client. [Dovecot] migrating from specialized qpopper

I'm hoping to migrate to dovecot from qpopper, with the eventual goal of enabling IMAP. However, my qpopper installation is fairly specialized, so I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone could get me headed down the best path. Here's the situation. I'm running FreeBSD and have a virtual domains setup with an extremely hacked LDA to do delivery to mailboxes within hashed directories under each virtual domain. Each domain also has a separate password file. This is NOT any virtual domain setup that you'd be familiar with, as it is an in-house creation that is about 9 years old now. I have 8000 users utilizing mailboxes on these domains, so having them reconfigure to use realms/domains in their login isn't really an option. With qpopper, we run it from inetd and use hosts.allow to call each instance with special information about the password file location, etc, like this: popper: ALL : twist (/pathto/bin/popper -d -s -T 300 -h %H -p /pathto/www.%H/passwd -x /pathto/www.%H/spool) This allows us to insert the domain (%H) based on what hostname the user is connecting to and change parameters based on that. [Dovecot] Dovecot and "deliver" disagree on character encodings

Hi, I have a problem where Dovecot and its LDA seem to disagree on what character encoding should be used in Maildir names. I use Dovecot and Postfix on a Debian server. Mail is delivered by Dovecot LDA (called from .forward) and sorted according to a Sieve script into a number of Maildir folders in my home directory. Dovecot serves the mail over IMAP and I read it in Kmail. I originally created the mail folders with Kmail, and Dovecot created the directories with their names encoded in modified UTF-7, like in IMAP. The Sieve script is encoded in UTF-8, in accordance with RFC 3028. When the Sieve script specifies a mail folder with non-English letters in the name, the LDA doesn't put the messages in the corresponding modified-UTF-7-encoded directory. Instead it creates a new directory with the same name but encoded in UTF-8. That directory doesn't show up as a mail folder in Kmail, presumably because Dovecot considers the UTF-8-encoded name invalid. The Dovecot I got with Debian isn't exactly the most recent version. I searched for "Maildir", "deliver" and "Sieve" in the changelog, and didn't find anything about this. Should I consider upgrading anyway, abandoning the Debian package? [Dovecot] multiple password schemes and sql?

Hello all. Just about to migrate from courier to dovecot, and figured I would as well try and get this working so I could use non plaintext mechanisms as well. I would like to offer at least: plain login digest-md5 cram-md5 and maybe more Everything works but this and have a testdb in sql with passwords like userid, password But get "Password query returned multiple matches" which indicates it doesnt try using any prefix and just get a hit on all "passwords" for that user. Is there any variable I can use in the sql query to use an extra field that contains the password type? plain and login should be stored in some crypted form, probably as md5 or sha256 hashes. Thankful for any insight into this...

Any recommendations for server push email using syncml and dovecot? I am familiar with Funambol for syncing pim info, but not used it for email. Are there any recommended opensource or commercial syncml servers that are known to integrate nicely with Dovecot 1.x? Googling hasn't really turned up much in the way of useful info. To mix it up a little, I was using Funambol for the Pim stuff, but ran into a bunch of issues and switched to eGroupWare which has it's own syncml ability which works quite nicely with my pda. I stopped using Funambol as the server didn't properly deal with the conversion from vcal to ical and as a result appointments synced on the pda end, always ended up 8 hours early :-( This was going from ThunderBird to Windows Mobile, so I am hoping to avoid this happening again. -- Harondel J. [Dovecot] Multiple network interface question

Hi all, Sorry if this question has been posted before. I have dug through the archives but haven't found any relevant answers to this question. I am running Dovecot on a server that serves a number of (virtual) domains each with a number of (virtual) users. To read mail I am providing a webmail client and have configured HTTPS connections using reverse DNS so that each domain has its own IP address and that each IP address gets mapped to a different virtual host. Each virtual host presents and HTTPS connection particular to their own domain using the SSL certificate for that domain so that each user only sees his or her own domain throughout. Is it possible to configure Dovecot so that mail-clients like Thunderbird or Outlook can connect via the default port using their own domain (maybe also using reverse DNS) and be presented with an SSL connection particular to that domain (i.e. using that domains certificate)? I did'nt know that i have to install first SSL then recompile with CPPFLAGS=-I/usr/local/ssl/include LDFLAGS=-L/usr/local/ssl/lib ./configure it's ok now but the server does not accept the password There was a problem logging onto your mail server. '/' in prefix and separator seems to be ignored (converted to '.'). I guess I will leave it to prefix= and separator=. but one user who uses apple mail complained about some prefix problems... [Dovecot] unclear alias behaviour

Hi all In /etc/aliases I have set up an alias for "root" pointing to "david" which is a unix account. Other email accounts are virtual dovecot accounts, one of them is "andel". They all work fine using /etc/postfix/virtual when used with the domain name which is defined in /etc/postfix/virtual.domains. But the alias "david andel" in /etc/postfix/virtual does work only when sending to "david(a)domain.com" but not for the local mails sent to "root". And then there is another behaviour I don't understand. In my virtual mail folder /srv/vmail/domain.com dovecot made a new directory structure "david" which I didn't intend, for postfix should rewrite it to "andel". Where is the error? Hi I am using Debian source packages from http://xi.rename-it.nl/debian/. When downloading dependencies, I have seen that the package requires MySQL, that I don't use. How could I remove this dependency or chanage them? Is that defined in any file? However, I would like to use SQLite or Postgres to store dict data for the Expire plugin. Where should I enable these flags? Thanks.

Hi I'm doing a network install of Dovecot 1.1.2. All is fine apart from a little annoying mistake I've found: I do this: > ./configure --prefix=/appli/tools_Linux/dovecot/1.1.2 --localstatedir=/var && make && make install however, since the --localstatedir is equal to a default value, it is still being constructed as "PREFIX/var" for some reason and in effect produces binary with following strings being built-in: > strings dovecot | grep var /appli/tools/dovecot/1.1.2/var/lib/dovecot /appli/tools/dovecot/1.1.2/var/run/dovecot /appli/tools/dovecot/1.1.2/var/lib/dovecot/ssl-parameters.dat /appli/tools/dovecot/1.1.2/var/lib/dovecot/ssl-parameters.dat var-expand.c var_expand_table_build So, the question is, is this a bug or my understanding wrong? I just need a network install, using local /var directiories for runtime data. Imagine that I have no write permissions to the installation (--prefix) folder. [Dovecot] Override config in deliver command line

Hi all In dovecot deliver LDA, is there a way to override some configuration settings for particular users? Tha full story is: I have a simple postfix/dovecot setup. No virtual users, delivery is done in /home/mail/%u. For a specific user, I would like to deliver to a maildir. Since mail_location is not explicitly configured, I simply created ~/Maildir for that user, relying on the default automatic mailbox location procedure used by dovecot. But I would like to be able to override this setting: for example if I wanted to use a name different from Maildir, this trick would not be sufficient. So it would be nice to have some way to change mail_location (and why not, other config parameters) only for particular users (and for me, doing this on the command line would be good: something like Postfix where you can override config parameters simply writing the new settings in master.cf on the daemon's command line). I noticed the -c command line switch, but I would prefer not to have entirely different configuration files for my users, where a single change must be manually propagated on all the files. I use dovecot-1.0.15 on CentOS5. Maybe this question can be read as a feature request too. Thanks Luigi

Indexes are separate in every server, not shared via NFS. About 20 000 users total. When old indexes (1.0.15) were present, mailboxes with UID validity problems did not fix themselves, but after i removed index directories in all machines, seems like it started to repair uid validity problems. The first panic seems to be tied to UID validity problems. Hi, I am new to dovecot and I am a bit confused with how namespaces/prefixes/separators are handled by the clients and dovecot... I tried to understand the desciption from the conf file but without success. With each conf I create the following path /f1/f2 on the client (thunderbird) and get the following on the dovecot server: PREFIX= and separator=/ => .INBOX.f1.f2 + .INBOXTrash PREFIX=INBOX/ and separator=/ => .f1.f2 and no Trash PREFIX=INBOX. and separator=. => .f1.f2 and no Trash Could someone point me to some IMAP for dummy web page...? ;D Or, what is the best conf able to handle most clients? Hi, I've just completed a migration from Courier to a Dovecot 1.0.7 (patched RHE 5) which is working great, except for this weirdness of an issue that is impacting a handful of users. My question is that will turning off maildir_copy_preserve_filename help or hurt in a situation where there are multiple servers with their own local INDEX files (uidlist is shared)? The problem is that a few users on a few versions of Microsoft Mail clients are not showing a few messages. They can see the messages just fine in webmail and other, more typical, E-mail clients. I know that the right solution is to upgrade to 1.1.2 and use shared indexes. The plan is to upgrade in a month or so. In my defense, this setup was not of my making, The two things issues that might have an impact are that we have shared (NFS) maildirs on multiple servers with their own local indexes and maildir_copy_preserve_file turned on. The uidlist (CONTROL) is shared and we have sticky connections turned on in our load balancer. The vast majority of clients do not have this issue. Quite frankly I have no idea these clients are ignoring the dovecot-uidlist. Would turning off maildir_copy_preserve_filename help with this setup? Another option might be easier is to delete the users INDEX and let the clients rebuild them. Since this is only a handful of users and we are migrating to 1.1.2 anyway, my preference is to make the bare minimum of changes to help address this problem. The changes need not be perfect nor anytime more than a suggestion or preference. I just want to make things better for a little while. Many thanks in advance. ---Jack P.S. The performance improvement is amazing - anywhere from 2X to 12X depending on what metrics you are looking at. [Dovecot] Option to evaluate IMAP prefixes relative to $HOME, rather than the IMAP root?

Greetings, Is there a mechanism (or relatively small source-code change) which would cause Dovecot to evaluate IMAP prefixes relative to $HOME rather than the configured IMAP root? * * * Background: We're currently migrating from a WU-IMAP mailserver configuration which stores user mail in a global NFS-exported $HOME, and we've run into well-known issues handling client-specified IMAP prefixes. If a user specifies an IMAP prefix, Dovecot evaluates the path given relative to the IMAP root path specified in mail_location, rather than resolving it relative to the user's home directory as our old WU-IMAP installation would do. (For example: if a user has been keeping their mail in $HOME/foobar, and mail_location's folder path is set to %h/mail, then when that user comes to retrieve their mail with an IMAP prefix set to "~/foobar", then Dovecot will attempt to return the contents of the folder $HOME/mail/~/foobar -- which doesn't exist -- rather than $HOME/foobar.) At the moment, we have several hidden namespaces set up to support various common user-side variations -- "mail/", "Mail/", "~/Mail/", etc. -- each with a different custom mail_location string. Whilst this works for these common cases, it's fairly ugly, and results in extra empty directories appearing in users' $HOME. If there was some mechanism for telling Dovecot to evaluate IMAP prefixes relative to $HOME rather than the mail folder root specified in mail_location, that would provide us with a much neater and general-purpose solution. [Dovecot] Dovecot not compiling with pam

Hi, I'm new here in the list so Hello to everyone! I'm compiling dovecot 1.0.10 with pam support in SLES 9 but i'm getting errors in config.log and it won't compile with pam support. [Dovecot] assertion failed

I haven't heard anything on this bug. Is this a bug? I'm using dovecot 1.1.2 with the following patch applied: http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.1/rev/d674c05d725d Another section from my logs. I know the backtrace is just numbers, let me know how to compile to get more useful information if you need it. So far no one is beating down my door, so I don't think users are seeing any ill effects. But I would sleep better knowing why it's happening.
