Timo et al., I haven't been reading the list in a while, but wanted to report back that we've transitioned to dovecot 1.0.15 and things look to be working very nicely. The platform is Solaris "Nevada" running on x86. I have been saving up a couple of issues to bring to your attention. On our server, we gather all core files, and so we get a good taste of the different things which are causing crashes. One problem which we see on an occasional basis is a crash in which the internal fatal error handling code goes horribly wrong. Here is an example. The complete stack trace is hugely long-- it appears that we recurse until we run totally out of stack. It seems like once we fall into i_internal_fatal_handler(), dovecot should really try hard to avoid further dynamic memory allocation, as heap corruption seems to make that a bit of a disaster. As for the crash in mbox_list_next, we see that one too with some frequency. [Dovecot] Deliver mail as 'read'?

I'd like to be able to deliver certain mail as 'read' from procmail. My procmail rules call deliver with -m to directly to inject filtered mail to maildir based directories. I like to keep copies of mail I've sent by cc'ing it to myself and using procmail to filter and store copies in the appropriate directory. I cannot seem to find a way of delivering cc'd mail from me to me as 'read'. I'm running dovecot-1.0.7-2.el5 on a CentOS 5 distribution. Any hints on how I may achieve this are welcomed. [Dovecot] The case of the disappearing INBOX's - upgrade to 1.1.1 from 1.0.7 and based on Email client type

Hi, I apologize if this has already been answered. I looked for an identical message but had no luck. I'm also not convinced this is a bug or if it is a bug that I want it fixed. The problem gives me a great reason to change our configuration to something more modern. Here is the situation. Our 1.0.7 configuration has the following, and only, namespace definition. namespace private { separator = . prefix = Mail. inbox = yes } This configuration was implemented years ago in order to simplify the upgrade from mail spool to IMAP for people who use mutt and pine. The interesting part is that after upgrading to 1.1.1, the INBOX would disappear from Thunderbird after clicking on a different folder. Now mutt worked just fine, which was even worse. Changing the configuration so that the INBOX appeared on Thunderbird caused the INBOX to disappear (or be unreachable) on mutt. After trying multiple configurations with every permutation, and making several wall dents with my forehead, I finally found this configuration. namespace private { separator = . prefix = INBOX. inbox = yes hidden = no list = yes } namespace private { separator = . prefix = Mail. hidden = yes list = no } For the most part, this works just fine. INBOX appears for every client I've tested and the migration is largely transparent. The only time I found issues is when the Trash, Sent, etc. folders were manually specified in a GUI client such as Thunderbird. Still the real question remains. Is this supposed to happen? If so, what are some of the reasons? Naturally my management would prefer that the original configuration works the same so that things are transparent. Personally, the second configuration feels better to me especially on a going forward basis. [Dovecot] recursive acl problem

Hi, i ve got a problem with recursive acl, using not a vfile global backend. ( no default acl) In my understanding every folder(directory) needs a seperate dovecot-acl files with permissions. This works fine, but my tests showed using a shared namespace like i.e. namespace shared { separator = / prefix = "users/%d/" location = dbox:/usr/local/virtual/%d/ inbox = no list = yes subscriptions = yes hidden = no } and have dovecot-acl in usr/local/virtual/%d/ with authenticated l which means lookup, leads that all folders and subfolders of /usr/local/virtual/%d/%u/ are imap browseable, which means its recursive somekind. ( people will not like seeing folder names of their mailboxes until they dont gave permissions explicit to others) In my meaning this shouldnt be so only names of ( names of directories) at /usr/local/virtual/%d/%u/ should be shown , subfolders in them should only be imap browseable if there is another dovecot-acl in them which permits lookup i may fail here , anyone which has some enlightment for me outside? -- Best Regards MfG Robert Schetterer Germany/Munich/Bavaria

[Dovecot] Mails "invisible" (index corrupted?)

Hi, I got a complaint from a user today, that a few mails "disappeared" from her Inbox, both when accessing via IMAP with Thunderbird and in the IMAP Webmail client (RoundCube Webmail, caching deactivated). Searching (in Subject or From header) within the Inbox turned up the missing messages though. After checking all relevant client settings (filter rules etc.), restarting Thunderbird multiple times, etc., I tried deleting her dovecot.index.cache file, restarting Thunderbird again, but that didn't change anything. Only after deleting dovecot.index.*, everything went back to normal. I can't find anything useful in the log. Setup: x86, CentOS Linux, dovecot 1.1.1 (current stable binary from ATrpms), maildir storage, mail_debug is turned on Any hints on what could have caused this? Where to look? I backed up dovecot.index, dovecot.index.cache and dovecot.index.log before I deleted them, but they probably contain sensitive information, so I won't post them to the list. [Dovecot] Multiple quota roots with quota-fs backend

Today I've tried to configure multiple filesystem quotas, with some strange results. These are my two filesystems; both using quotas: * /dev/mail mounted to /var/spool/mail using AIX quotas for all users. Mailbox format is 'mbox' and they are named '/var/spool/mail/<logname>' * filer0:/vol/home mounted to /home/f0 via nfs using netapp quotas for all users. Now I known what I want... but how to get it :-) While I see no way to use namespaces and/or quota rules to configure this behavior, patching quota.c, quota-fs.c and quota-private.h seems to be an option. A downside of this is, that I've to extend the quota plugin interface (quota_backend_vfuncs) defined in quota-private.h by adding an new callback function. Since all other quota backends don't have this new function, they have to initialize it with NULL. So there are side effects to other quota backends. Hi, I use dovecot-shared to add read permissions to the group in my mail server, which uses virtual users. This is only to ease backups. However, a few files are not created with the permissions in dovecot-shared. I've seen this happen to 'subscriptions', 'maildirfolder' (when dovecot-shared exists; the change to correctly create maildirfolder in this case is very recent), and possibly 'maildirsize' (I'm not sure about this one, it might be exim that is creating it with wrong permissions.) This has been tested in recent snapshot package, from the Debian repository listed at http://wiki.dovecot.org/PrebuiltBinaries. [Dovecot] AIX: mntctl implementation for NFS quota support

Hi Timo, Hello list, I've played around with dovecot-1.1.1 on AIX to get quotas (especially NFS quotas) to work. I've found that dovecot doesn't implement handling of 'mntctl' and so it is unable to determine filesystem mountpoints on AIX correctly. Your'll find more information about 'mntctl' here: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/systems/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.a… Okay... I've added mntctl support to 'lib/mountpoint.c' today. My tests are looking good and so I'd like to share the patch. While I'm still not really familiar with dovecots memory management, I need someone who is familiar with it to have a look on my lines of code. Especially the usage or p_new, t_strconcat and p_free should be checked. :-) To activate the patch you have to add "#define HAVE_VMOUNT_H 1" do 'config.h'. Maybe someone wants to alter configure* to do this automatically? And of course Timo, if you find it useful, you may include the code in one of the next dovecot releases. Not sure but I mean I didn't have these in the log file before the upgrade....: auth(default): passwd(user(a)domain.no): unknown user auth(default): prefetch(user(a)domain.no): passdb didn't return userdb entries, trying the next userdb Is there some config that is wrong or? btw, authentiation is working.... Hi I configured Exim with dovecot LDA and added quota (dict/mysql). It works but it seems that dovecot is not reporting situation back to exim process - it looks like Exim returns OK(accepted) to smtp sender before the message is actually delivered - if the quota is exceeded then LDA drops the mail and sends DSN. Between versions 1.0.4 and 1.0.5 there were some changes to the way dovecot-shared group ownership is propogated into new maildirs. Changing the group of new_dir/{tmp,new,cur} was added, but changing the group of new_dir itself was removed. As far as I can tell, this latter change may have been accidental. [Dovecot] No log for hitting login_max_processes_count?

I think today just due to increased use, my mail servers hit login_max_processes_count. It wasn't obvious what was happening, logins just weren't acting like they should and sometimes would get disconnected before given a prompt from the server. Something made me think to check if I had too many of certain dovecot processes and I found I had 128 imap-login processes on both servers, but nothing in the logs seemed to point that out for me. Should there be? It would have been alot easier to debug. Also, this seems to be from general use, doesn't seem like a DoS, so is this just a setting I should keep an eye on and increase it by reasonable amounts as needed? Thanks.

Hello, I recently switched to dovecot 1.1.1 with mbox_snarf from uw-imap with mbox driver enabled. The mail is delivered by procmail in /var/spool/mail/user Most of my users have a file INBOX located in $HOME/mail The mail is transfered from /var/spool/mail/user to $HOME/mail/INBOX every time an imap connection is done. Things are OK with clients like thunderbird or evolution, but with imp or mostly squirrelmail messages are duplicated (some user reported that a single message duplicated 50 times !). Every imap connection (thunderbird or webmail) terminates with a warning : Timeout leak: 0x4534e0 I 've tried to use fcntl in : lock_method, mbox_read_locks and mbox_write_locks but things are worse than traditional dotlocks. My config on my first server : sendmail-8.14.1 procmail dovecot 1.1.1 On the second server : The webmail (imp and squirrelmail, latest versions) is installed on another server but uses server 1 as imap server. I 've tried to use an imap proxy (perdition) but without any improvement as far as this problem is concerned. I previously used another dovecot server on that machine with an NFS mount to get /var/spool/mail from the first server with the duplicate problem too. Hello, I have been running some tests on a new Dovecot v1.0.13 server and have seen the following message appear in the logs a few times. Hi, I am using dovcot on a Fritz!Box (Linux fritz 2.6.19.2 #1 Fri Apr 18 16:00:34 CEST 2008 mips unknown) And after upgrading from 1.0.9 to 1.0.15 I am getting above assertion, when I do some action like moving or deleting on the IMAP mail box using MailDir on ext2 fs. I use --with-ioloop=epoll and --with-mem-align=4 as build configuration. For dovecof configuration see below details. I use dovecot-1.1.1 and dovecot-1.1.5 which built by atrpms, and i use 'include' command to include two/several personal sieve rule file, but if either of these personal sieve rule files is not exist, sieve_execute_bytecode failed. How can i make it just skip the non-exist personal sieve rule file, and continue to try to include next sieve rule file? [Dovecot] Multiple auth client sockets

I use two seperate Postfix instances as MSAs (so that different policies are simpler to configure), and both of them require Dovecot SASL support. Since Postfix' smtpd is chrooted (at least in the Debian package), the client socket needs to be somewhere under the instance's queue_directory. This means I need two different auth client socket paths. When I simply specify two "client { ... }" in dovecot.conf, the second takes precedence over the first. Besides using a second dovecot instance, which I'd like to avoid, what ways are there to run a second client socket? Ulrich

[Dovecot] configuration query

Hello, please excuse my asking a question about simple configuration rather than something about a suspected bug or other detailed enquiry. I've set up dovecot (1.0.13, from http://www.blastwave.org) and when Thunderbird connects to it, all is well and I see folders as expected. When MacOS X mail connects however, it sees my home directory on the dovecot machine, not the mail directory. Now setting-aside the obvious rant about why MacOS has to be gratuitously different *again*, I would like to configure dovecot not to serve my home directory. I keeping saying I/my as this is just a personal set-up at home. This IMAP stuff is a bit involved but I thought namespaces would be the answer but it seems not. That is, I have namespace private { location = /var/marchive/%u inbox = yes } but even this still allows Mac Mail to see the home directory. What else should I do to stop dovecot serving my home directory ? I realise that there is also a problem with the client, that Mac Mail is *asking for* my home directory rather than the mail folder, but that's another problem, not for this list. Thanks in expectation.

[Dovecot] BUG: messages created with permissions not respecting umask

Using dovecot 1.0rc15, together with postfix and dovecot-lda. umask is set to 0007. This should ensure directories and files get created with read/write permissions for both user and group. However, dovecot-lda writes files with 600 permissions, instead of 660. So dovecot does not seem to respect the umask configuration property for local mail delivery. In my particular case, I have vmail:vmail own the mail directories, and a backup user part of the vmail group. However the backup user cannot read the mails and thus back them up properly. Suggestions: - respect the umask for file delivery as well - alternatively, take the parent directory's permissions, strip executable bits, and apply to file Thanks Thomas

Hi Is it possible to run one script before the "real" delivery of a message (with lda, or before the execution of the sieve scripts) but after the creation of necessary folders (Dovecot automatically creates the folders for virtual users)? I want to to this to manually create a fixed empty sieve script in each user home folder, so in the global sieve script include that personal script, because if personal script doesn't exists, global script is not executed, or am I wrong? Dear All, My system has about 30,000 accounts and these accounts are created as unix system users. Each account has its own entry in /etc/passwd with different UID and home directory. We plan to deploy an Layer 4 switch as a load balancer. Proposed architecure is as the following: ---- internet ---- Layer 4 switch ---- mail server1 ---- NFS storage | | |--- mail server2 -----| Both mail servers will share the same storage which contains users' home with Maildir inside. Dovecot will be installed on the mail servers serving pop3 and imap4 protocols. Since the layer 4 switch will direct connection to backend mail server in random(or some of its algorithm), users can not guarantee which mail server to use. My first question is which kind of INDEX settings should I apply? 1) INDEX=MEMORY 2) INDEX=/nfs/%u 3) INDEX=/var/spool/%u Will INDEX stored on disk outperform INDEX stored in memory? If INDEX stored on NFS storage, we can be sure the consistency of INDEX file, but what about the performance and locking problem? If INDEX stored on local disk, since users may connect to different mail servers every time. Will that impose the problem of inconsistency? What kind of syndrome will happen if the INDEX became inconsistent to real maildir content? My second question is about quota. We use maildir as mail storage format. Our users were divided into 3-4 groups, each group of users with different quota size ranging from 100MB - 1G. To my best knowledge, dovecot's quota setting in config file supports only "one global configuration". (We are not using db, we use only /etc/passwd). dovecot.conf quota_rule = *:storage=10MB Since dovecot supports both fs and maildir++ quota, I would like to ask for your suggestion: 1. Should I use system quota instead? How about the comparision of performance? Is there any drawback/limitation using system quota? 2. Is there any settings of dovecot that could fullfil my situation? 3. My thought is to modify dovecot.conf, comment out quota_rule = *:storage=10MB and leave only the quota = maildir in the plugin { block. According to my experiment, dovecot will read the maildirsize file under user's home. Then I have to set the maildirsize file for every user individually! It seems to be a little crappy but works. [Dovecot] OT: Deleting email

I have a mail server running postfix and then using dovecot so others can reach it using imap. I go check mail using thunderbird and delete a few emails, emptying the trash afterwards. Then I quit it and access it using pine. The deleted emails are still there, marked as marked for deletion. I delete a few other emails within pine and quit. It asks to delete the marked emails, I tell go for it, and it does. When I go back to THunderbird all those emails are gone. Next I tell thunderbird to mark certain messages as spam and delete email I marked as spam. I quit it and go back to pine. The spam marked messages which thunderbird swore were deleted are still there. THis really does not seem to be a dovecot issue, but has someone seen that happen? If so, what is going on?

Looking at the IMAP4rev1 protocol (RFC 2060), we have the following definition: INTERNALDATE The internal date of the message. 2.3.3. Internal Date Message Attribute The internal date and time of the message on the server. This is not the date and time in the [RFC-822] header, but rather a date and time which reflects when the message was received. In the case of messages delivered via [SMTP], this SHOULD be the date and time of final delivery of the message as defined by [SMTP]. In the case of messages delivered by the IMAP4rev1 COPY command, this SHOULD be the internal date and time of the source message. In the case of messages delivered by the IMAP4rev1 APPEND command, this SHOULD be the date and time as specified in the APPEND command description. All other cases are implementation defined. How could any implementation of this protocol possibly use a file system time stamp to represent that important piece of meta-data, no matter where the file lives? It seems totally reasonable that this is what Outlook uses for the Received date (and I rarely defend Microsoft). This seems like a real design flaw in the dovecot implementation. I am fairly new to dovecot (and like many aspects of it over uw-imap), but having to really be careful with my mail store's mtimes borders on the absurd. I realize it is "implementation defined", but the intent of the definition surely does not refer to file system time stamps. Any chance this can be reconsidered? Is this an actual dovecot issue or a more general Maildir issue? In configure.in, there is a check that does `krb5-config --version | grep -v 1\.2`, making sure there is no "1.2" in the version of Kerberos in use. This is to prevent compiling against MIT Kerberos version 1.2, which is too old for Dovecot. Unfortunately for this idea, Heimdal 1.2.1 is out. And Dovecot builds fine against it. Whoever committed this check also appears to have removed the comment warning that it was broken, to add insult to injury. Please fix your checks to be for FEATURES, not version numbers. You never know when something else that correctly implements the features you want will come along. Bryan Jacobs

I successfully executed the script which "fixed" my mail store. I also see now why there isn't a buttoned down solution out there. The basic steps are simple as outlined below, but when dealing with ~35,000 emails going back before 1993, there were just about a dozen that didn't adhere to the "Date:" screening and subsequent capture for use by "touch --date". Adding these exceptions to my script completely automated the INTERNALDATE resetting, but I would not publish this publicly on the internet. Nevertheless, I would share it with anyone who requests through this mail group given the caveat that it is only guaranteed to work for MY personal data store. So you can use whatever utility/script you want to modify the mtime (I don't have any suggestions). Then delete dovecot.index.cache file to make sure the old value wasn't cached. You might also have to recreate the account in your clients to make sure they haven't cached the old values.

I have a question which others must have encountered. I switched from uw-imap to dovecot-imap a few months ago and moved my fairly large mail archive (~15 yrs) by simply mounting both accounts in a mail app and simply copying my folders over. This worked well, and all my mail is in order when I view it in evolution or thunderbird on any number of machines. However, since our company uses MS Exchange Server, when I add my dovecot imap account to outlook, everything is great except the received dates - it looks like the date I made the transition, but in all instances it's not simply the time stamp in the Maildir folder. I googled around on this and have gathered that this date is coming somewhere from within the dovecot index file. Is there a utility for scanning that so I can ascertain where the date shown in Outlook is coming from? Is there also a utility which would just reset the INTERNALDATE (or whatever it is that Outlook is keying on) to the date in the message on the "Date: ..." line? This issue is not life threatening as I don't use Outlook much, but when I do, it is confusing to not have the "Received" column be meaningful, especially for sorting. Thanks for any help - Karl

I'm using Dovecot 1.0.5-6 (SuSE 10.3) and using dovecot deliver. Is it possible to change the subject/body of the default overquota message (it says "Automatically rejected mail" on the subject) and also the text from the message? Here's just a note of thanks to the developers of Dovecot. I first starting using just the Dovecot IMAP server about a year ago, and it's been working fine for that. More recently I've started to use the managesieve and LDA components as well, and what I find now is that this system works well and is straightforward to configure, well-integrated, and relatively well documented. Also, the LDA has a significantly stronger set of sieve capabilities than exim's. All in all, Dovecot is doing a lot of work for me now and doing it well. Hats off to the developers. Andrew.

Hi, creating a imap dbox folder and deletion now works with thunderbird, but the subscription file seems not be updated ,somekind. After the deletion of a folder it apears again after restart thunderbird .Then ,by click on it , you get message , folder not exists ( which is true ) but for disapaer the folder must be be manually unsubscribed. this isnt the same behavior like i.e with maildir with maildir the deleted folder shows up too, after restart, but with clicking on it, it disapaers without any message to tb anyone an idea to this? -- Best Regards MfG Robert Schetterer Germany/Munich/Bavaria

[Dovecot] antispam plugin, amavis and sa-learn

Hello, I would like to use the Dovecot antispam plugin to train SpamAssassin via sa-learn. I compiled the plugin and got it to work with the sendmail backend, which I tested by having it send a message to me. As I'm calling SpamAssassin with amavisd-new, I have a system-wide Bayes db, maintained by the amavis user. As expected, the antispam plugin calls the configured binary as the mail user (I'm running deliver as suid, with mixed virtual and system accounts). My question is: How can I get the plugin to call sa-learn as user amavis? I have tried the following things: (1) making the amavis user's .spamassassin directory to world-writeable and handing the path to sa-learn with the --dbpath parameter. That failed - the IMAP client says "Move not allowed" when I try to move a message to or from the Spam IMAP folder. (2) making a suid copy of sa-learn with owner amavis. This failed because of an sperl error. (3) editing sudoers to allow 'sudo -u amavis sa-learn' without a password. This works fine on the command line, but fails with the same error as (1) when used with the plugin. Although I compiled the plugin from git with debugging to syslog activated, I do not get any error messages in mail.log where all messages from dovecot are logged. Now, I know that the methods above aren't exactly secure, so if anybody has a different way of training SpamAssassin with the antispam plugin in a amavis setup, I would appreciate it. [Dovecot] Maildir folder renaming disagreement among IMAP clients

A user alerted me to a problem when he renamed an upper level mail folder and lost access to a lower level folder under it. I tried with and without listescape, it didn't seem to make a difference, and I saw no errors in the dovecot log. Symptoms are if a client has a maildir folder tree .a and .a.b and renames a to c in their client, Thunderbird shows c/b but b is inaccessible since it is still actually .a.b on the filesystem, unsubscribed but accessible if you go subscribe to it. Outlook Express seems to behave the same except it cannot access "b" (.a.b) at all now because "a" no longer exists. Subscribe window shows it, but you cannot subscribe (as expected for OE). According to the rawlog, Thunderbird just tries to rename the top level folder and change subscriptions, but doesn't rename other maildirs to match the new top level folder. On the other hand, Outlook seems to rename and subscribe the top folder and subfolders properly. Who is right, should the mail client be doing all the work, or should dovecot be doing more, or do I have something setup wrong? I'm pasting what I think are essentials from the rawlogs, and my dovecot -n. Hello, I currently use procmail without the deliver LDA but would like to switch to using deliver. I also would like to get away from procmail for various reasons. Otherwise I could use the procmail-patch from http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2006-July/014656.html AFAICS. I don't want to use sieve because it's too limited and can't see a similar patch like the one for procmail available for maildrop. What setup would I use for Postfix+maildrop+deliver? thanks, Tom

As I said previous my mail, if I don't set any value in "Root folder path" option, my sent mails are stored in main "sent items" of Outlook Express. These mails aren't stored "sent items" of imap section. Hi all, I've set up some shared folders and I'm controlling the access to them with the ACL plugin. As far as I know, ACL rules are not applied to sub-folders, right? So, when a user adds a new sub-folder, I need to add a dovecot-acl file granting read permissions to others users, right? Does exists any way to implement it using some dovecot feature? Hi all, I have implemented a mail system with postfix and dovecot as LDA. Users who have exceeded their quota when receiving messages dont'see the message bounced. As I said previous my mail, if I don't set any value in "Root folder path" option, my sent mails are stored in main "sent items" of Outlook Express. These mails aren't stored "sent items" of imap section. I use dovecot1.x. for imap on qmail. I also use OExpress to receive my mails. My sent mails is stored in main "sent items" of Outlook Express. Therefore I set "INBOX" in "Root folder path" option. But when I send an email to anywhere the mail sends without problem but I am getting an error as following; Some of the messages in your Outbox Folder could not be copied to your Sent Items. How can I correct that ? Thanks

Hi, currently most people store their messages in some sort of folder hierarchy, so that they can find them later easily. Here, for example, mails that are connected to a project are being stored in /CompanyName/ProjectNumber folders. Now I was wondering if there is any reason against using tags instead of a folder hierarchy, because tags are better when it comes to mails that belong to multiple projects (maybe even belonging to multiple companies) at once. All mails could then be stored in one folder/mailbox, fulltext search indexing would work well. You could search for a tag that consists of the ProjectNumber and would get all mails that belong to that project, just as if you would have opened that folder in the old hierarchy. You could save this search as a 'Search Folder' (talking in Thunderbird terms). Then I looked at how Thunderbird implements those tags when using IMAP. It stores them as IMAP keywords. Dovecot stores the first 26 flags in the filename, because it will only use one letter. Mapping between client's tag name and the letter is being done in dovecot-keywords files (one for each mailbox). If there are more IMAP keywords than 26, they will be stored in the dovecot.index file. (http://wiki.dovecot.org/MailboxFormat/Maildir) Now imagine we want to have 1000s (maybe 10000s) of different tags (=IMAP keywords) - instead of folders. Can this be recommended? What happens if the index file gets corrupted for some reason? (I had to delete dovecot.index files before...). What happens if the Thunderbird profile breaks? What happens if we want to move on to another client? Are there other ways to implement 'tagging' instead of a hierarchy? Hello. I upgraded my dovecot to 1.1. I use the FreeBSD port. However, I can't use the expire plugin. See the error: Unknown dict module: db expire plugin: dict_init() failed I see on the mailing list another mail like this problem. And the problem is the imap library is not linked to libdb. [Dovecot] 1.1 and the zlib plugin

Hello, I've been playing around with using namespaces to change the way messages are stored. My idea was to use mbox for archival stuff, like this: namespace private { separator = . hidden = no inbox = yes prefox = location = maildir:%h/Maildir } namespace private { separator = . hidden = no prefix = "INBOX.Archive." location = mbox:%h/Maildir/Archive } This works *GREAT*, and I'm really pleased with it. However, it occurred to me that for deeply frozen archives, it might be nice to gzip them. Conveniently, there's the zlib plugin. From what I could tell from the documentation, the compressed mbox names must end in ".gz", so I thought I could simply go into ~/Maildir/Archive and gzip everything. But when I did that, Dovecot started behaving strangely. First of all, the result of LIST shows the files like this: * LIST (\NoInferiors \Marked) "." "INBOX.Archive.Friends.gz" Which is obviously wrong. When I try to SELECT it, I get this: ? SELECT "INBOX.Archive.Friends.gz" ? NO Mailbox doesn't exist: Friends/gz Which seems to indicate that Dovecot is treating the dot in the extension as the separator (understandably), and failing. However, if I leave off the extension, I get this: ? SELECT "INBOX.Archive.Friends" ? NO Mailbox doesn't exist: Friends Which seems to indicate that Dovecot isn't translating "Friends" into "Friends.gz" for some reason. Then I remembered that in the ChangeLog, back in May, the zlib plugin was changed to look for the zlib header rather than the Z flag. I assume that was for using it with Maildirs, but I figured it was worth a shot. So I renamed the Friends.gz file to remove the extension. But that just gives me an error message: ? SELECT "INBOX.Archive.Friends" ? NO Mailbox isn't a valid mbox file It seems like loading the zlib plugin either doesn't have any effect, or I'm not doing it right. I have it in the config file along with other plugins that work just fine: mail_plugins = fts fts_squat zlib And when I check that with dovecot -p, it shows up: mail_plugins: fts fts_squat zlib There's no entry in the plugin {} section of the config file for the zlib plugin... but I assume that none is necessary. She checks her mails both from home and from office, so she left her mails in the server for 3 days. This morning she got lots of received mails again. Hi, I'm having a problem with the Sylpheed mail client and dovcot 1.0.rc15. Sylpheed does not like how dovecot is returning LIST output so it cannot see subfolders. Dovecot Version: 1.1.1 with sieve and managesieve configured. I want to filter spam with the subject *SPAM* to a spam folder for all users, and i also want users to have personal sieve scripts (like vacation). I have configured Squirrelmail, dovecot manage sieve and avelsieve plugin in squirrelmail to do that. The problem is that the user home 's scripts are replaced with the avelsieve plugin script did it in the web interface and the configuration of .dovecot.sieve calling the global script is lost. Hello: CentOS 5.2 Postfix 2.3.3 + updates (bundled with CentOS 5.2) Dovecot-1.0.7 (bundled with CentOS 5.2) Dovecot-1.1.1 (Updated from www.atrpms.com) Dovecot-sieve-1.1.5 (Updated from www.atrpms.com) During the last few days I have installed dovecot many times without errors. Today I installed dovecot-1.1.1 & sent a test message to 'test(a)tib.com'. I received the following message back: ------------------ This is the mail system at host mail.tib.com. I did not have this problem when I was testing dovecot-1.0.7. Google show 'Permission denied' error problem going back to several years. One suggestion on Google was to 'disable' SElinux, which I did without success. Any ideas why this error is happening? Kirti

[Dovecot] Version 1.0.13 - Maildir directory names

I am running Maildir (obtained via [mac|darwin] ports) on my Powerbook Pro to operate as local mail storage. My mail is stored in the Maildir format. Is it possible to set Maildir not to put a dot in front of the directory names? (e.g., ~/Maildir/somefolder instead of ~/Maildir/.somefolder). OS X's spotlight indexing/search service will not index "hidden" directories (those that begin with a period), so I would like Maildir to use non dot-files for its base names so that my email is indexed. I tried messing with the "seperator" setting in the .conf file (I tried setting it to "/", ":" and ".") with no luck. (I was able to connect in all cases, but new folders contined to receive dot-names. Is there a way to force Maildir(++) to name directories without the leading dot? I have hunted the mailing list for an answer to this, and the only suggestions that came close did not seem to work.

[Dovecot] After upgrade from 1.0 to 1.1.1 my "hidden" private namespaces suddenly aren't hidden anymore...

Just upgraded my home mail server from version 1.0 to 1.1.1 and now I noticed that Thunderbird has started showing the 'hidden' namespaces (albeit "greyed") for that server (see the attached JPG image)... What can I change to really make them hidden again? The only thing I changed in my dovecot.conf file from 1.0 to 1.1.1 was to add the following two lines: mail_nfs_storage = yes mail_nfs_index = yes - Peter

Hi, I am using dovcot on a Fritz!Box (Linux fritz 2.6.19.2 #1 Fri Apr 18 16:00:34 CEST 2008 mips unknown) And after upgrading from 1.0.9 to 1.0.15 I am getting above assertion, when I do some action like moving or deleting on the IMAP mail box using MailDir on ext2 fs. I use --with-ioloop=poll as build configuration. I am getting a different assert, when I compile dovecot with --with-ioloop=epoll and --with-mem-align=4 For dovecof configuration see below details. [Dovecot] fs quota check with server does not support rquotad

Hi, Last time, I have got no reply, hope this time is better. OS: Solaris 10 Dovecot version : 1.1.1 file system of /var/mail : NFS from Solaris file system of /home : other NFS server that not support rquotad. Here is my setting that works: ---------------------------- plugin { quota = fs:INBOX:mount=/var/mail quota2 = fs:home:noenforcing:mount=/home/h1 } The above settings works. Dovecot able to report the quota information on /var/mail. However, when I try to append some mail to mail folders on my home drive, dovecot will produce following errors. Hi Friends, I'm running postfix 2.2.10, dovecot-0.99.11 and openldap -2.2.13 in my organization. Here, all my postfix, dovecot, saslauthd, depends on ldap only. Means ldap is acting as a centralized database for user information. In this picture everything is working fine except user login to dovecot for downloading their mails. Actually they can't able to login to the server from client like outlook express. Instead thay are geting error like "server closed the connection...". [Dovecot] Private flags and shared keywords

Hi all, With some help of this list, I've managed to set up some mailboxes keeping \Seen flags as private. Thanks Timo for updating the documentation about that. But now, I've got another question: is it possible to keep those flags as private and have shared keywords ("Junk", "NotJunk", etc.)? [Dovecot] Time moved backwards by 4398 seconds

Dovecot (v1.1.rc8) died tonight, with an error about time moving backwards by 4398 seconds. I can see from logs that this has happend a few times before with the imap processes, without me noticing. I sure noticed the master process missing, though :-). I was puzzled that it was always 4398 seconds, in particular because this server runs an NTP daemon. A little searching for this problem shows that it is an issue with the Linux kernel gettimeofday(), see e.g. http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/8/23/96 Below is a patch (untested) to work around this issue. Do you see something wrong with this approach, apart from the uglyness? I just picked the 4395-4400 values by chance. Can you figure out how big the window should be? Hi, I'm using dovecot v1.0.rc15 (from debian etch) and I have some performance problems. [Dovecot] FETCH for mailbox got too little data

Using 1.1.1. Got this error message in a tight loop, using both Tbird and Mulberry 3 as client: FETCH for mailbox INBOX UID 32994 got too little data: 1616 vs 1649 I get this repeatedly alternating with a login line. What does this mean? I stopped the server, zipped ~/mail/.imap/INBOX to hide it and let dovecot recreate it, and things seem to be working again. Is there a less destructive way to fix this in the future? Delivery is by procmail.

This optional function is used in 'quota_root_iter_next' to filter the list of all quota roots. Hi, i have qmail + vpopmail + dovecot + squirrelmail 0.99.14 on Fedora Core 4. Qmail includes its own pop3 server, and everybody is able to access it from outside. Dovecot is used only locally by SquirrelMail - so everybody can access via webmail. I'd like to make imap directly available from outside, but only for a few selected domains (NOT ip addresses!), while leaving everyone able to access with pop3 and/or via webmail. I don't know if this is possible, and if it is, i don't even know where to start. Is it a vpopmail or dovecot setting? We have been using dovecot v1:1.0.15-1_72 and dovecot-sieve v1.0.3-7 very successfully for many months but I've been unable to get dovecot-sieve to work with the latest 1.1 release. The new release seems to completely ignore our global sieve script no matter what we do. Is anyone else using the atrpms-stable rpms packages and able to get dovecot-sieve to work correctly? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Gavin

I was wondering if Dovecot has the ability to sort email scored by Spamassassin? I know many people use Procmail for sorting but I was wondering if Dovecot can do the job or should I just use Procmail on my Linux (Postfix) server to sort email in specific folders? I have not yet installed Dovecot and or Procmail on the Postfix / Debian server. I would be installing the latest version avialable in apt-get = 1.0.13.
