[Dovecot] plus addressing bug in dovecot 1.1.x?

I had recently upgraded from Dovecot 1.0.14 to 1.1.0, and then to 1.1.1. Ever since the upgrade to 1.1.0, I noticed that "plus addressing" has failed. In case I'm using a foreign phrase, this is the concept of sending an e-mail to "user+spam(a)domain.com", and having dovecot (dovecot LDA, specifically), deliver this to the "spam" submailbox to "user(a)domain.com". I've been using this successfully since 1.0.3. When I upgraded to 1.1.0, I noticed that e-mails were no longer being delivered to the submailboxes as they had been (though they would arrive in the central INBOX). I checked the "dovecot-deliver.log", and I noticed that, ever since I had brought up 1.1.0, I would see: save failed to spam: Unknown namespace ("spam" is the submailbox) After the upgrade to 1.1.1, I still would see these messages (and behavior). I have since installed 1.0.15. The plus addressing now works again, as it had been. With all of these "upgrades" and "downgrades", the config file has remained exactly the same. There have been no other changes to any components on the host system (i.e., new OS-es, new postfix, etc.). Thoughts? Is this a known issue? - Jon

[Dovecot] nfs_flush errors

I'm looking for some help with an nfs error that is filling our logs. I get a constant stream of these messages: Jul 8 10:47:08 servername dovecot: [ID 107833 mail.error] IMAP(username): nfs_flush_file_handle_cache_dir: rmdir(/var/mail) failed: Device busy I have two dovecot IMAP servers. All mailboxes are NFS mounted. The INBOX is /var/mail and the rest are in /home/<user>/mail. It looks like work was done on this back in January: http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot-cvs/2008-January/010638.html And again in February: http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.1/rev/258477a3f1e7 Was a there another fix that I missed or is anybody else is still seeing the same issue? [Dovecot] Problem: delivery with mode 600 into shared folder

Hi, I have a problem, delivery called from /etc/aliases file by pipe delivers with mode 0600. I need system users with shared mail folders (Maildir format). When I changed alias to pipe to shell wrapper with mode 002 set in it, nothing changed. MTA is sendmail, OS Solaris, and dovecot version 1.1.1. Can somebody help? [Dovecot] Recieving e-mail is not updating quota

Hello again. When I send e-mail locally from userX@mydomain to userY@mydomain the quota in userY@mydomain isn't updated with the new message, but the message arrives fine. It's not a userX problem, because it's equal if it's userY sending userX. When I save an message, the quota is updated. Or when the userX sends the e-mail, his quota is updated too. The problem is that the quota don't update when a new message arrives. What could it be? Now I empty the mailbox of the userY, and the maildirsize is like this: 16777216S 0 0 1151862 1 2837616 1 2838683 1 5674797 2 -5674797 -2 -5674797 -2 1151862 1 -1151862 -1 -1151862 -1 The user quota from ldap is 16MB. In the user dir, the size is 452K # du -kh . --max-depth=0 452K . Now, I send an e-mail about 900k from userX to userY, and the quota display still 0M, but the user dir is 1,6M # du -kh . --max-depth=0 1,6M . [Dovecot] 1.1.2 segfaults when using passdb passwd and md5 mechanism

Setting passdb to passwd and enabling cram-md5 or digest-md5 makes dovecot crash. The documentation says that I can use md5 with passwd. I had to use strace to figure it, because dovecot segfaults and doesn't log the error. [Dovecot] Dovecot doesn't read users and passwords from config files

Greetings, I am setting up Dovecot 1.0.15 on my home Fedora Core 8 pc ONLY to access my mail archives across several mail clients. No access from the internet is possible or needed here. I cannot log in with any client, the login always fails. [Dovecot] Server power loss and "Dovecot is already running with PID xxx"

Hi, I'm running Dovecot 1.0.7 (with various patches) on CentOS 5.2. The server has suffered a couple of power loss events. Dovecot is run as a standalone server. The problem is that dovecot refuses to start up at boot because the PID file from before the power loss is left behind. The message is as follows: $ /sbin/service dovecot start Starting Dovecot Imap: Error: Dovecot is already running with PID 10825 (read from /var/run/dovecot/master.pid) Fatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot.conf [FAILED] (Note: there is nothing wrong in the configuration file so the error message is somewhat misleading.) I looked at the release notes of 1.0.xx releases and they didn't mention this. Is this already a known problem? My dovecot is currently configured to authenticate vs. a userdb/passdb passwd-file that contains, for each user: username:passhash:5000:5000::/path/to/home::userdb_mail=/path/to/maildir Is it possible to let users authenticate and change their passwords? There are some webmail client add-ons that allow such things if users are system accounts or in a MySQL/LDAP db. Does anyone else use passdb/userdb passwd-files like above and have a method for allowing users to change their passwords from the web? Sorry for the slightly off-topic question, but hoping another Dovecot admin has solved this problem. Preference is to not to be tied to any particular webmail client just for this change password feature.

[Dovecot] Thunderbird and Dovecot on FC5 taking a long time to retrieve message

I'm running FC5 (2.6.15-1.2054_FC5smp) and Dovecot dovecot-1.0-0.beta8.2.fc5 with Thunderbird 2.0.0.16. I set up imap (dovecot) so I can access my mail locally or remotely. It seems to take a very long time (minutes sometimes) for an Email to be retrieved after I select it in the folder list and/or in the Email list locally or remotely. I've traced the imap process and found it doing a lot of reading (read() system calls) for a long time. I do have a high message count in some of these folders (i.e.: 20000 or so). Is there any way to improve performance (use more memory, cache indexes, tune I/O parameters, etc...) ? Thanks. -Mark

[Dovecot] POP3 locking

I'm trying to understand what dovecot's behavior will be in a given scenario to see if it will work as a (hopefully better) replacement for the home-grown pop3 server we currently use. User A is on a slow dialup connection, and uses, oh, let's say Outlook, since that's where most of our problems seem to spring from. User A uses outlook to download his mail over pop3. Half way through downloading a particularly large message, Outlook decides that the whole process isn't happening fast enough, so it opens another connection to the server and tries to download (potentially) the same message again. Now, our current server establishes a lock on the mailbox, and when that second connection happens it simply responds that there's no messages to collect... we used to have it terminate the connection, but this brings up confusing error messages on User A's client, and they call up and complain -- not an ideal situation. I've got a dovecot installation on my testing server, and I think I've set everything up correctly; it authenticates from my LDAP database, finds the home directory, lists the mail, all that... I believe somewhere it there it uses fcntl to establish an advisory lock on the mailbox (oh, we're using Maildir, by the way). I'm not sure where, though, or how long the lock persists for, or what its actual purpose is, because my tests show me that I can log the same users in with two concurrent sessions and get the same message twice. It's probably a fault in my understanding of how locking in user sessions of a pop3 server should work, but that doesn't sound right to me. Can someone explain if what I'm seeing is correct, or what problem it may be symptomatic of? Does dovecot even do concurrent-user-session locking? So far I've enjoyed playing with dovecot -- far more than the current server we use. I'd like to use it as our primary pop3 server, but preventing users from having concurrent sessions and getting the same message more than once, and keeping them from seeing errors because of their client trying to open multiple sessions is important. Oh, and I'm user dovecot 1.0.beta3, since I don't really have the option of upgrading the OS on my mail servers any time soon. Adrian

Hi, I use the latest version of dovecot 1.1.2. Thanks to the excellent docs I managed to get everything working so far, but ... I'm experiencing such strange behaviour when user gets over 90% of quota (the threshold is such): 1. user uses say 89% of his ~/Maildir 2. message arrives that increases quota usage to 92% 3. quota_warning is _NOT_ triggered 4. user deletes the surplus message and gets back to 89% (quota_rule2: Trash:ignore) 5. quota_warning is triggered and quota warning message arrives So the event gets triggered when user passes the quota threshold, but from a "wrong direction". I would expect that message should arrive together with the surplus message. When I create new users using useradd there is a 0 byte file created in /var/mail for the user but I use scripts to create student accounts every semester (about 10,000) so I'm trying to avoid having to add more things that the script will have to create. My questions are: 1. Which folder '.dovecot.sieve' script is copied into? Is it 'home/test' -or- 'home/test/Maildir' or someplace else? 2. Hello, I'd like to figure out how to set up a site running dovecot on multiple computers for load balancing reasons. I'm currently running dovecot-1.0.14 on a 8GB RAM, 2 quad-core 2.66Ghz Xeon single server which runs FreeBSD 6.2-STABLE SMP. . the mailbox format was mbox and I successfully migrated to Maildir only . mailboxes are on an NFS NetApp server, attribute caching is off . indexes are locally stored . the number of users is around 2500, some of them having huge mailboxes (~ 1 or 2 GB) . a large amount of users is using IMAP but there are also many POP3 users . the passdb/userdb is openLDAP . for now, I neither use namespaces, nor quotas nor deliver, nor any plugin, but I plan to use namespaces and ACL to implement shared mailboxes. The same machine is running postfix-2.4.6 with amavisd-new-2.5.4 (no spamassassin) and clamav-0.93.1. I'm using procmail-3.22 as the LDA. I installed dovecot-1.1.2 on non-standard ports for test and plan to switch to it as I read on this list it performs better, load wise. This setup (1.0.14) works great except that, compared to the time mailboxes were in mbox format, the load average (as shown by 'top') goes higher from a significant amout on a regular basis and sometimes goes over the top. On "normal" circumstances, the number of processes is around 1400 and the load oscillates between 1 to 10 and 30 to 60. Most of the time, I'd say the load average is around 20. Every friday a message (no attachement, decent size) is sent to all users : in such circumstances (but only sometimes, not every time : let's say half the time such a message is sent), the load goes so high that I have to stop dovecot to let procmail deliver the message or even reboot the machine. Sometimes, the load climbs up to something like 150, then goes back to the 'normal' case described above. I know multi-master replication is on the roadmap. I know some dovecot sites use in the meantime several dovecot servers. I'd like to know how those sites do the load balancing, the main problem beeing to be able to direct each user to the same dovecot server each time as stated in the Wiki (http://wiki.dovecot.org/NFS) I don't think that DNS round robin would do the trick because some UA (for instance Thunderbird) often open up to 5 connexions for the same user, unless maybe such UA makes a single 'gethostbyname()', thus connecting 5 times to the same physical server ? [Dovecot] Seen flag in maildir filename not being respected

Hi, I'm using dovecot 1.1.2 (but I've noticed this since 1.1.1 which I was using until yesterday). It seems dovecot is ignoring the "S" flag in Maildir filenames, and is relying only in its Index Files to determine if a message has been read or not. I say that because if I delete the dovecot.index.* files for a mail folder, all the mails in there appear as unread. Also, I've tried accessing the maildir directly (using heirloom-mailx, but mutt should have done, too) and reading a new message. The file name was changed to add a "S" to the end, but this message was still marked as "unread" when the mail folder was accessed via IMAP. The flags R, F and T are correctly read from the filename if no index is present. I haven't tested the other flags. Obviously that same folder is no where near 1/3th of our total folder number, so thats a bit strange. I really doubt this is some local setting issue, because then id see much more of those. Right now it's a tiny fraction of our total folder amount, which leads me to believe it's some weird edge case in the dovecot code. Anyone have any ideas? Cor

Dovecot is set up as follows: passdb vpopmail{ } userdb vpopmail{ } I've added a domain alias for the main domain with vaddaliasdomain and email to post@aliasdomain is delivered to post@maindomain and can be checked with pop. However, when I try to check IMAP through the account post@aliasdomain I am confronted with an empty mailbox. If I log in using post@maindomain I get the expected contents. Why can't my users log in using user@aliasdomain to check their emails? Hi there We had been using the stock Ubuntu Dapper Dovecot which is an early 1.0 beta but just upgraded to 1.1.1 to fix some read flag issues with Horde. Previously dovecot seemed to ignore files beginning with "." in the ~/mail (mbox format) directory but now shows them. There doesn't seem to be any switch in the dovcot.conf file to change this. Any such settings are about maildir. Is there anyway to make dovecot-1.1.1 ignore hidden files? [Dovecot] login processes from attacks staying for hours

I'm in the process of rolling out new setups with dovecot on CentOS 5.2 and I notice that dovecot doesn't handle the brute-force attacks too nice. I reduced the limit a bit to some reasonable looking value: login_max_processes_count = 32 to stop them earlier and the number of processes stops at that figure when an attack happens. However, it stays at this count for hours although the attack is already over since long. For instance, my monitoring alerts me at the moment when the process count for pop3-login goes over 20 processes. This happened on three machines at 2 am with a brute-force attack from the same source that didn't last longer than a minute or so. However, the process count dropped only at 7am under 20 on two machines and on the third machine it was still over 20 when I was in the office at 9 am and finally killed them. As these machines are all not in production yet, there weren't any other logins and the single brute-force ended within one minute according to the logs (obviously when pop3-logins hit the limit). Shouldn't these processes go down to login_processes_count (3) within a few minutes? An strace shows that they are mostly doing gettimeofday lookups (=sleeping). This is the default dovecot (1.07) coming with CentOS 5.2. I've been running only one other instance of dovecot in production (0.99.11) on CentOS 4.6 so far and I don't know which behavior that displayed in the past as I just recognize that I accidentally ommitted it from monitoring. :-( I had this mailing list searched for "brute-force" to see how others handle this and what dovecot provides to stop these attacks. I have found not many threads about this. There is one with a bit more information: "Delay on failed pw attempts" from January 1. Unfortunately, this functionality is only in a later version of dovecot and it's not clear if it was implemented or not or if it would be helpful. Was it implemented? This thread also mentions fail2ban which may be one way to go, although I don't like this log parsing approach too much. Does anyone use iptables for rate-limiting per IP on the pop/imap ports to prevent brute-force attacks? Hi I want to enable autocreate-plugin, I downloaded http://dovecot.org/patches/1.1/autocreate-plugin.c compiled as specified in comment and got autocreate_plugin.so but I'm not sure how do I install it. I have many plugins in /usr/local/lib/dovecot/ (it's FreeBSD) and subdirs, but they all have libXX_ prefixes (what do they mean?). Hi all, I have tried very hard to solve this problem but turn to the mailing list as a last resort. After upgrading our CentOS 5 box to the latest revisions last week (including Dovecot 1.1), we're seeing the following error message in the log files. Sieve was working fine with Dovecot 1.0. I have yet to turn up anything via Google for this particular error. I already ask it in maillist. Please, see first letter. I'm not the module author or author of contributed patch to remake links at wiki on my way, for example. There are free files. Original source for xexec module, kindly given by you. Patch from Stephan, to make xexec work with dovecot 1.1 and prepatched source by me after testing Stephan patch. I need some help troubleshooting this problem. It only shows up with IMAP connections. I initially thought it was related to SquirrelMail (because it gives me an 'EXPUNGE' error), but after attempting to send IMAP commands directly to the server as shown below, I'm thinking there is something else going on. The system configuration is PostFix as the MTA delivering to procmail in the mailbox (maildir format), with Dovecot handling POP3 and IMAP Postfix is version 2.3.3 Dovecot is version 1.0.rc15 procmail is version 3.22 2001/09/10 kernel is 2.6.18-53.1.14.el5, CentOS 5 There is additional info about the system configuration after the command sequence and log entries below. I've left my typos in, just in case they somehow bear on the problem. Is accessing a mailbox via POP3 and IMAP at the same time considered to be a Bad Thing? 2. Is having procmail drop messages directly into the directory that the IMAP process is scanning a Bad Thing? 3. Is there a better/preferred way to have Postfix/procmail deliver mail to the maildir that will keep Dovecot IMAP happy? (There don't seem to be any issues with pure POP3 access). I'm helping a friend setup a small mailserver using dovecot, and I'm finding a strange problem with checkpasswd that I haven't had on my servers. How is the following debug output even possible? Hello, I'm using dovecot 1.1.1 and dovecot-sieve-1.1.5 . I'm very interested in the notify plugin, I've tried many code which have generated some errors (coding errors that have been arrived in the .dovecot.sieve.err) but these errors are fixed. Why is default_with_listener getting involved when users are trying to connect to dovecot directly without any involvement of Postfix? CentOS 5.2 Postfix-2.3.3 Dovecot-1.1.1 Dovecot.Sieve-1.1.5 I have setup with: home_mailbox = Maildir/ (/etc/postfix/main.cf) & mail-location = maildir:~/Maildir (/etc/dovecot.conf) I have created a 'test' user to test Sieve 'Vacation' setup. My questions are: 1. Which folder '.dovecot.sieve' script is copied into? Is it 'home/test' -or- 'home/test/Maildir' or someplace else? 2. '.dovecot.sieve' script parameter ":days 1" means that the reply is sent once a day. Is it possible to send the reply 'immediately'? Kirti

I am running version 1.1.1 with mail_location: maildir:~/Maildir. This is working great as all our users have UNIX accounts with nologin shells. New domains (and their users) are about to come online and we would like to migrate to a setup with virtual mailboxes/users. From the wiki and comments within dovecot.conf, I see it is possible to do this piecemeal so both local and virtual users can co-exist during the transition. My question is how to keep things working as they are for existing users/domains (which will be migrated later), and use the virtual mailboxes (and thus, a different mail_location) exclusively for the new users. I understand that multiple userdbs and passdbs can be specified, and this will take care of authentication. On http://wiki.dovecot.org/VirtualUsers#homedirs it is stated that "The userdb can return the mail extra field to override the default mail_location setting. Usually you shouldn't need this." Where is this mail extra field defined? In the userdb passwd-file or somewhere within dovecot.conf? I was looking for workaround, and tried to use one uid for all users, and ACL plugin to give permissions like: --- owner lrwstiekxa anyone rls --- rls should mean read, lookup and write-seen. Read and lookup works, and as soon as I remove these letters I can't read mail folder. Hi folks, with the brandnew release Dovecot 1.1.2, the daemon killed itself with signal 6 (SIGABRT) when trying to save a mail from the INBOX to another folder. The mail client is PINE 4.64. After reconnecting to the IMAP server, the mail was actually copied to the destination folder, but the original mail was still in the INBOX and not flagged as "deleted". They can be saved/copied now without problems back and forth. I've tried to send more mail and reproduce the problem, but no success. Works perfectly fine. [Dovecot] dovecot.conf permissions

Hi, I have a little problem with defining the right permissions for dovecot.conf. The main problem is that the password for SSL certificates is stored there and the conf file is world readable by default, which makes a security problem [1]. It is not a problem to restrict the permissions to 0600, dovecot will still work, but then deliver cannot work as it reads the conf too, but it runs under arbitrary user. So my last iteration is 0640 as permission and root:mail as ownership, but that expects that deliver is run with group = mail. For the long term solution I would prefer to move the password into a separate config file so the permissions can be properly restricted there. What are your opinions? [Dovecot] Delivery notifications

I'm working on an application that is backed by Postfix 2.3.8 and Dovecot 1.0.13, configured with virtual domains, for handling messaging. I need to be able to send the notification (such as "You've received a new message on SomeAwesomeService. Click here to check it out", It's evil, I know) to a different email address, such as a mobile device. Eventually, we want to do other things like clear web page caches when a message is received, or sending IM notifications, but that's for another day. So basically, we want to notify our application whenever a new mail is received, and it can do all the magical things that it needs to do. I was hoping to get some feedback on the different approaches I'm looking at. From what I can tell, there's not a way to deliver to multiple virtual transports in postfix, so here's the options I see: * Content filter I could set up a "content filter" that just delivers the mail to the application, and then re-injects it back into postfix. This seems like more work than the other options just because I have to worry about re- injecting the message * Intercept delivery Replace the dovecot deliver command with a custom one that calls the dovecot deliver and then passes the message on to the application. I've written a little proof of concept for this and it seems to work, but just seem shady. * Sieve Dovecot supports Sieve, so I could just have a global sieve script that sends the notifications. This is definitely the solution I'm leaning towards. Are there any better options? Do you think this will have a significant impact on performance? Am I crazy? Thanks, Brandon

[Dovecot] making IMAP quicker on LAN

Hi all, I keep on hitting this problem when migrating new clients from POP or local IMAP servers (hosted on their LAN's) to my Dovecot setup, which is hosted properly in a data center. People usually complain that it's slower and although they're getting a kick ass mail setup it doesn't look good from their point of view. I'm wondering if there is anything I could do to speed it up on their LAN's. What I mean is probably a caching IMAP proxy or some sort of replication to a local Dovecot server. Is this something Dovecot can do? I'd be really grateful for any opinions on how to tackle this problem. Many thanks, Andrew.

Hi! I am using Postfix, Mysql and Dovecot 1.0.rc15. It seems that Dovecot creates new mailboxes for eg. User(a)Domain.COM althoug in the name in databse is user(a)domain.com ny logging in pop3. How to solve this problem?

Hi, I'm trying to use dovecot for storing mailing lists and read-only access for users. The OS is Solaris, authentication for all readers of these lists are from Ldap through PAM, and one local user "listuser" will receive all mail and store them into it's folders (Maildirs). These maildirs are readable (read-only) for all others and they are shared by setting --- mail_location: maildir:/home/vmail/listuser/Maildir:CONTROL=/home/vmail/%u/Maildir/control:INDEX=/home/vmail/%u/Maildir/index --- Mail became readable because in each mail folder to be shared there is dovecot-shared with mode 064, and all users included into his group. But this is the problem: how to have flag \Seen stored in read-only mailbox? I've finally read and answered most of the mails on this list. If you haven't received an answer to your question, resend it. There are a couple of tricky mbox issues left, but I'm not sure if I can do anything about them unless someone can show me how to reproduce the problems. There are quite a lot of new features in v1.1.2 actually. Most of them are in plugins so hopefully they shouldn't destabilize anything. Anyway I tought I'd just in case put out a quick release candidate so at least a few people could try it. I'll probably make the final v1.1.2 release in a day or two. Hi! I'm currently setting up my first mailsystem based on dovecot. For a far way, working with dovecot was very convenient, but after I had to integrate deliver, it became massivly painful. My components are postfix as MTA, postgresql as user database and dovecot as IMAP server. Any idea, where my solution went the wrong way? The uid/gid belong to vmail:vmail, which is used for the auth-master, as well as for running deliver and to dispatch the postfix messages. Btw., I ask myself, how dovecot can assume to use prefetch in this case, as prefetch bases upon the password query, which has to fail in this case, as there is no password. For me it seems that USERDB_CHECKPASSWORD is only used in configure and for printing the build-options. Additionally checkpassword protocol does not makes any sense for a userdb. It could be used only for passdb plus prefetching userdb. Therefore I suggest to remove USERDB_CHECKPASSWORD to make this more obvious althought this is only cosmetic. Given the (slightly edited) config info below, iPod Touch users are unable to connect, leaving the following message in the log file: dovecot: Jul 23 10:00:40 Info: imap-login: Disconnected (auth failed, 0 attempts): rip=1.2.3.4, lip=5.6.7.8, TLS handshaking: Disconnected Even with maximum logging on, no other error messages seem related to this problem. [Dovecot] \HasNoChildren versus \Noinferiors in ACL plugin and no CREATE permission

Hi, using ACL plugin with dovecot 1.1.1 I expected that a Maildir was listed as * LIST (\NoInferiors) "/" "Foldername" if "create" (k) permission is not set in ACLs and there doesn't exists any subfolders. But to my surprise, dovecot gives the following output: * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "/" "Foldername" Therefore the client (here: SquirrelMail) does not know about the inability to create subfolders and offers "Foldername" in the selection for the parent folder. If there are exists already subfolders of "Foldername", dovecot has to use \HasChildren and not \NoInferiors. But in other cases \NoInferiors should be the correct answer and not \HasNoChildren. Or am I totally wrong? [Dovecot] Mailbox_module_context question

Hi, I am new to the dovecot source and would like to know why the mailbox_module_context has a pointer to the mail_storage_module_register and not to a mailbox_module_register. From what I have understood, if a context is first added to the mailbox.module_contexts array using the mail_storage_module_register and then a context is added to the mail_storage.module_contexts and then a third context is again added to the mailbox.module_contexts the mail_storage_module_register.id will be 3 and the second element in the mailbox.module_context will be unused and the first and third elements of the mail_storage.module_contexts are unused. There might be something I am not understanding here so please forgive me if my question has an obvious answer. Daniel

I just installed the Rawhide package on my CentOS 5 system. The one item that bit me is that the config file defaults to using interface "[::]" so it only listens on IPv6. (This is from a patch in the package that changes the upstream default of "*", so it only affects those using the Fedora package.) I've just updated from 1.0.14 to 1.1.1 (Maildirs). According to <URL:http://wiki.dovecot.org/Upgrading/1.1>, "dovecot-uidlist file is in a new format. The old format is automatically converted to new one." [Dovecot] Namespaces

Hi all, I'm working to convert from a bincIMAP setup to a Dovecot setup. I've tried messing around with namespaces to make the conversion transparent, but I'm getting nowhere. Are namespaces necessary? Or can I proceed by recursively renaming the folders on the server? A transparent solution would be wonderful, but I can't get it to work for me.. [Dovecot] Sieve plugin should recompile when symbolic link changes [patch]

The sieve plugin compares the modification dates of sieve source and compiled script and compiles the script only if necessary. When the managesieve extension is used, it creates a symbolic link for the script. In order to switch between scripts managesieve changes the link only. Therefore the sieve plugin should include the modification date of an symlink in its decision about compilation. The attached patch adds this functionality. So, I'm posting my question again: I've set up some shared folders and I'm controlling the access to them with the ACL plugin. As far as I know, ACL rules are not applied to sub-folders, right? So, when a user adds a new sub-folder, I need to add a dovecot-acl file granting read permissions to others users, right? Does exists any way to implement it using some dovecot feature? Hello: CentOS 5.2 Postfix 2.3.3 (part of CentOS install) Dovecot 1.0.7 (part of CentOS install) Dovecot 1.1.1 (Updated from www.atrpms.net) Postfix & Dovecot are working fine. While reading "Dovecot LDA with Postfix" document at http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA/Postfix , I read the following statement: --------------------- Dovecot LDA with Postfix System users If you wish you use deliver for all system users on a single domain mail host you can do it by editing mailbox_command parameter in /etc/postfix/main.cf (postconf(5)): mailbox_command = /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver # or mailbox_command = /usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver # or mailbox_command = /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver # or wherever it was installed in your system. Then run postfix reload and that is it. --------------------- Here is the problem; I do not find location of ".../dovecot/deliver" anywhere on the system! 1. Timo et al., I haven't been reading the list in a while, but wanted to report back that we've transitioned to dovecot 1.0.15 and things look to be working very nicely. The platform is Solaris "Nevada" running on x86. I have been saving up a couple of issues to bring to your attention. On our server, we gather all core files, and so we get a good taste of the different things which are causing crashes. One problem which we see on an occasional basis is a crash in which the internal fatal error handling code goes horribly wrong. Here is an example. It seems like once we fall into i_internal_fatal_handler(), dovecot should really try hard to avoid further dynamic memory allocation, as heap corruption seems to make that a bit of a disaster. [Dovecot] Deliver mail as 'read'?

I'd like to be able to deliver certain mail as 'read' from procmail. My procmail rules call deliver with -m to directly to inject filtered mail to maildir based directories. I like to keep copies of mail I've sent by cc'ing it to myself and using procmail to filter and store copies in the appropriate directory. I cannot seem to find a way of delivering cc'd mail from me to me as 'read'. I'm running dovecot-1.0.7-2.el5 on a CentOS 5 distribution. Any hints on how I may achieve this are welcomed. Hi, I apologize if this has already been answered. I looked for an identical message but had no luck. I'm also not convinced this is a bug or if it is a bug that I want it fixed. The problem gives me a great reason to change our configuration to something more modern. Here is the situation. Our 1.0.7 configuration has the following, and only, namespace definition. namespace private { separator = . prefix = Mail. inbox = yes } This configuration was implemented years ago in order to simplify the upgrade from mail spool to IMAP for people who use mutt and pine. The interesting part is that after upgrading to 1.1.1, the INBOX would disappear from Thunderbird after clicking on a different folder. Now mutt worked just fine, which was even worse. Changing the configuration so that the INBOX appeared on Thunderbird caused the INBOX to disappear (or be unreachable) on mutt. After trying multiple configurations with every permutation, and making several wall dents with my forehead, I finally found this configuration. namespace private { separator = . prefix = INBOX. inbox = yes hidden = no list = yes } namespace private { separator = . prefix = Mail. hidden = yes list = no } For the most part, this works just fine. INBOX appears for every client I've tested and the migration is largely transparent. The only time I found issues is when the Trash, Sent, etc. folders were manually specified in a GUI client such as Thunderbird. Still the real question remains. Is this supposed to happen? If so, what are some of the reasons? Naturally my management would prefer that the original configuration works the same so that things are transparent. Personally, the second configuration feels better to me especially on a going forward basis. [Dovecot] recursive acl problem

Hi, i ve got a problem with recursive acl, using not a vfile global backend. ( no default acl) In my understanding every folder(directory) needs a seperate dovecot-acl files with permissions. This works fine, but my tests showed using a shared namespace like i.e. namespace shared { separator = / prefix = "users/%d/" location = dbox:/usr/local/virtual/%d/ inbox = no list = yes subscriptions = yes hidden = no } and have dovecot-acl in usr/local/virtual/%d/ with authenticated l which means lookup, leads that all folders and subfolders of /usr/local/virtual/%d/%u/ are imap browseable, which means its recursive somekind. ( people will not like seeing folder names of their mailboxes until they dont gave permissions explicit to others) In my meaning this shouldnt be so only names of ( names of directories) at /usr/local/virtual/%d/%u/ should be shown , subfolders in them should only be imap browseable if there is another dovecot-acl in them which permits lookup i may fail here , anyone which has some enlightment for me outside? -- Best Regards MfG Robert Schetterer Germany/Munich/Bavaria

[Dovecot] Mails "invisible" (index corrupted?)

Hi, I got a complaint from a user today, that a few mails "disappeared" from her Inbox, both when accessing via IMAP with Thunderbird and in the IMAP Webmail client (RoundCube Webmail, caching deactivated). Searching (in Subject or From header) within the Inbox turned up the missing messages though. After checking all relevant client settings (filter rules etc.), restarting Thunderbird multiple times, etc., I tried deleting her dovecot.index.cache file, restarting Thunderbird again, but that didn't change anything. Only after deleting dovecot.index.*, everything went back to normal. I can't find anything useful in the log. Setup: x86, CentOS Linux, dovecot 1.1.1 (current stable binary from ATrpms), maildir storage, mail_debug is turned on Any hints on what could have caused this? Where to look? I backed up dovecot.index, dovecot.index.cache and dovecot.index.log before I deleted them, but they probably contain sensitive information, so I won't post them to the list. [Dovecot] Multiple quota roots with quota-fs backend

Today I've tried to configure multiple filesystem quotas, with some strange results. These are my two filesystems; both using quotas: * /dev/mail mounted to /var/spool/mail using AIX quotas for all users. Mailbox format is 'mbox' and they are named '/var/spool/mail/<logname>' * filer0:/vol/home mounted to /home/f0 via nfs using netapp quotas for all users. Now I known what I want... but how to get it :-) While I see no way to use namespaces and/or quota rules to configure this behavior, patching quota.c, quota-fs.c and quota-private.h seems to be an option. A downside of this is, that I've to extend the quota plugin interface (quota_backend_vfuncs) defined in quota-private.h by adding an new callback function. Since all other quota backends don't have this new function, they have to initialize it with NULL. So there are side effects to other quota backends. Hi, I use dovecot-shared to add read permissions to the group in my mail server, which uses virtual users. This is only to ease backups. However, a few files are not created with the permissions in dovecot-shared. I've seen this happen to 'subscriptions', 'maildirfolder' (when dovecot-shared exists; the change to correctly create maildirfolder in this case is very recent), and possibly 'maildirsize' (I'm not sure about this one, it might be exim that is creating it with wrong permissions.) This has been tested in recent snapshot package, from the Debian repository listed at http://wiki.dovecot.org/PrebuiltBinaries. [Dovecot] Upgrade to 1.1 maildir & shared folders problems

[Dovecot] AIX: mntctl implementation for NFS quota support

Hi Timo, Hello list, I've played around with dovecot-1.1.1 on AIX to get quotas (especially NFS quotas) to work. I've found that dovecot doesn't implement handling of 'mntctl' and so it is unable to determine filesystem mountpoints on AIX correctly. Your'll find more information about 'mntctl' here: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/systems/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.a… Okay... I've added mntctl support to 'lib/mountpoint.c' today. My tests are looking good and so I'd like to share the patch. While I'm still not really familiar with dovecots memory management, I need someone who is familiar with it to have a look on my lines of code. Especially the usage or p_new, t_strconcat and p_free should be checked. :-) To activate the patch you have to add "#define HAVE_VMOUNT_H 1" do 'config.h'. Maybe someone wants to alter configure* to do this automatically? And of course Timo, if you find it useful, you may include the code in one of the next dovecot releases. Not sure but I mean I didn't have these in the log file before the upgrade....: auth(default): passwd(user(a)domain.no): unknown user auth(default): prefetch(user(a)domain.no): passdb didn't return userdb entries, trying the next userdb Is there some config that is wrong or? btw, authentiation is working.... Hi I configured Exim with dovecot LDA and added quota (dict/mysql). It works but it seems that dovecot is not reporting situation back to exim process - it looks like Exim returns OK(accepted) to smtp sender before the message is actually delivered - if the quota is exceeded then LDA drops the mail and sends DSN. Between versions 1.0.4 and 1.0.5 there were some changes to the way dovecot-shared group ownership is propogated into new maildirs. Changing the group of new_dir/{tmp,new,cur} was added, but changing the group of new_dir itself was removed. As far as I can tell, this latter change may have been accidental. [Dovecot] No log for hitting login_max_processes_count?

I think today just due to increased use, my mail servers hit login_max_processes_count. It wasn't obvious what was happening, logins just weren't acting like they should and sometimes would get disconnected before given a prompt from the server. Something made me think to check if I had too many of certain dovecot processes and I found I had 128 imap-login processes on both servers, but nothing in the logs seemed to point that out for me. Should there be? It would have been alot easier to debug. Also, this seems to be from general use, doesn't seem like a DoS, so is this just a setting I should keep an eye on and increase it by reasonable amounts as needed? Thanks.

Hello, I recently switched to dovecot 1.1.1 with mbox_snarf from uw-imap with mbox driver enabled. The mail is delivered by procmail in /var/spool/mail/user Most of my users have a file INBOX located in $HOME/mail The mail is transfered from /var/spool/mail/user to $HOME/mail/INBOX every time an imap connection is done. Things are OK with clients like thunderbird or evolution, but with imp or mostly squirrelmail messages are duplicated (some user reported that a single message duplicated 50 times !). Every imap connection (thunderbird or webmail) terminates with a warning : Timeout leak: 0x4534e0 I 've tried to use fcntl in : lock_method, mbox_read_locks and mbox_write_locks but things are worse than traditional dotlocks. My config on my first server : sendmail-8.14.1 procmail dovecot 1.1.1 On the second server : The webmail (imp and squirrelmail, latest versions) is installed on another server but uses server 1 as imap server. I 've tried to use an imap proxy (perdition) but without any improvement as far as this problem is concerned. I previously used another dovecot server on that machine with an NFS mount to get /var/spool/mail from the first server with the duplicate problem too. Hello, I have been running some tests on a new Dovecot v1.0.13 server and have seen the following message appear in the logs a few times. Hi, I am using dovcot on a Fritz!Box (Linux fritz 2.6.19.2 #1 Fri Apr 18 16:00:34 CEST 2008 mips unknown) And after upgrading from 1.0.9 to 1.0.15 I am getting above assertion, when I do some action like moving or deleting on the IMAP mail box using MailDir on ext2 fs. I use --with-ioloop=epoll and --with-mem-align=4 as build configuration. For dovecof configuration see below details. [Dovecot] 'include' feature in sieve 1.1.5

Hi, all. I use dovecot-1.1.1 and dovecot-1.1.5 which built by atrpms, and i use 'include' command to include two/several personal sieve rule file, but if either of these personal sieve rule files is not exist, sieve_execute_bytecode failed. How can i make it just skip the non-exist personal sieve rule file, and continue to try to include next sieve rule file?
