Hi I have just installed Dovecot (Moved from Courier-IMAP) and have just about everything running well thanks to some great docs in the wiki (Thank you to all those who contributed!) however I have not managed to get the quota warnings working yet. I have done much Googling and come back with some oldish posts which help me to understand how the quota warnings work but having looked at all this I have realised I don't have a quota-warning.sh script in /usr/local/bin where the config suggests it ought to be. In fact, I don't have a file by this name any where on the box. I have downloaded both 1.1 source (Which I'm running) and 1.0 and I can't find this anywhere in the sources or the tarball. Could some one tell me where I can find this or am I supposed to make my own? If so is there and example that I can follow? [Dovecot] Caseless folder delivery?

I'm using exim4 to deliver into dovecot 1.1, and using plus-addressing to deliver mailing lists directly to appropriate folders in my "lists" mailbox. I created a file called /folder-map.lists that looks like ## folder-map.lists dovecot: Dovecot lpedge: Linux PowerEdge ... and so on. So mail to lists-lpedge(a)jay.fm goes to the "Linux PowerEdge" folder. The one annoying thing: I'd like to avoid creating explicit folder-map entries where the plus-address suffix is identical an existing folder name. That *almost* works, but I like to name my folders with appropriate capitalization, and deliver doesn't seem to have a way to do "caseless" delivery. For instance, ideally, I wouldn't have to create the "dovecot: Dovecot" entry; mail to my lists-dovecot(a)jay.fm address would go into the "Dovecot" folder. I can't figure out how to do this. Is there a way to do that using deliver? Could there be? Relevant portions of the exim configuration follow. (And, p.s., am I using the new -a and -m options correctly? Are they used for anything yet?) Hi - Last year I set up a new CentOS 5 server and through the install process permitted it to set up dovecot as my IMAP server. ./dovecote --version returns "1.0.rc15" With the system up and running I moved the tar files of my old email accounts over and everything seemed to be just fine. Recently I have upgraded my primary workstation to a Mac Pro - and that of course has it's Mail application. Let me summarize briefly to be sure that I don't omit some minor detail that makes all the difference in the world. Previously I used Netscape 7.2 as my mail client and then went over to Thunderbird on the PC - in either application, under Server Settings / Advanced I had to uncheck the box "Server supports folders that contain sub-folders and messages". Then whenever I attempted to add a new subfolder I would be given a choice - "This server restricts folders to two special kinds. Allow your new folder to contain: [] Folders Only [x] Messages Only". Though perhaps not ideal, this has worked ok up till now. The Leopard Mail application doesn't seem to have this sort of support - it assumes that every folder or subfolder can and should contain both, so all I get are folders that can hold messages. This is a problem as I can't create any new folders to reorganize mail. Though I had thought about resolving this, or at least trying to when I first encountered it - life got busy. So my skills have become a bit rusty and I have not done anything about it. But now I would like to. I ported over my email and my wife's - so perhaps there is some legacy setting in those folders that prevents the bliss of folders and mail in the same subfile. But I created a new email account for my daughter and that has the same limitation. In Leopard mail, folders to hold folders look White, whereas folders to hole mail look blue. In Thunderbird Folders to hold Folders are in Italics whereas Folders to hold mail are normal font. I am also using Webmin to simplify access to the server, but I don't see anything obvious under the dovecot tool for this. The installation was the basic default, so far as I can remember. I have run Yum to update the files and at last review there was nothing outstanding. I have some (Thunderbird client, dovecot-1.0.13, Maildir) users who get an appalling amount of spam-with-attachment, and it's causing backups to take an inordinate amount of time. I'll implement some quota and server-side spam management when I go to dovecot-1.1, but in the meantime: What is the safest way to empty all messages within, but not delete, the following folders from the server command line: /home/user/Maildir/.Junk /home/user/Maildir/.Trash I don't want the Thunderbird-2.0.14 client to report corrupt indexing, or worse not show the folder at next use. Hello, Well, I have a brain-dead user (using Thunderbird 2.0.0.14) who just won't listen when I tell them not to try to move 5000+ messages at one time (or if deleting, bypass the Trash), and they managed to royally screw up their maildirs... I have two problems... 1. The /tmp directory has 9+GB in it... can I just rm tmp/* on that directory without making this problem worse? and 2. One of the directories they were moving now has 5 copies of a whole bunch of messages... I'm very dangerous when it comes to command-line work beyond really basic stuff, and my scripting skills are less than inspiring... Is there a relatively safe command-line way of finding all messages that have more than one instance, and deleting all but the last instance? Tia... -- Best regards, Charles

Hello, i'm using in my installation qmail+vpopmail and now I have migrated from courier-imap to dovecot. Dovecot is very much faster with large mailbox than courier-imap. But I have a problem. vpopmail has a feature that allows you to "Disable non webmail IMAP access", many webmail using imap as if they were, and they are, a client IMAP. vpopmail give me the ability to disabile IMAP, expect for 127.0.0.1, both for individual users than for single domain. So i can grant IMAP access, from remote client, only for some users but webmail access for all. Hi All, I tried to build dovecot-1.1.rc9 on a HP-UX machine, but failed to configure with the following message: configure: error: You don't appear to have C99 compatible vsnprintf() call The environment is like the following: - command: ./configure - uname: HP-UX B.11.23 U ia64 - aCC version: HP aC++/ANSI C B3910B A.05.55 [Dec 04 2003] Also, I tried to run `./configure CC=c99' and `./configure CC="/opt/aCC/bin/aCC -Ae" also, but the result was the same. I'm not sure, but the HP C compiler does not seem to support C99 fully with vsnprintf() call. Is there any workaround for this problem? TIA, Woonsan

Dovecot version: 1.1-rc8, 1.1-rc9 System: Linux-2.6.2x User-Agent: claws-mail-3.3 and 3.4 When appending messages (e.g. copy from mailclient local folder or second server to dovecot imap folder) dovecot answers with: <tag> OK [APPENDUID <n> <m>] Append completed\r\n This answer often reaches the client as two or more TCP packets, the client (when not using TCP_NODELAY on its socket) ACKs with some delay. When copying lots of (small) messages this delay has a very negative impact on copy time even though there are lots of network and system resources available. (Client and server on same 100Mb LAN, same result if client and server are on same host) The attached patch makes dovecot send the whole answer in a single packet, thus not triggering the delay issue. As far as I found out the delay is generated by Naggle algorithm, this algorithm being used by Linux TCP stack for small packets with the aim of improving payload/overhead share. Hi, I'm using dovecot for the first time on a production server (before dovecot I used bincimapd). I have a question about the number of imap (not imap-login) processes created for a user. I've seen 100+ processes for just 1 user. So far it only occurs for 1 user, other users have just 1 imap process. I now the user is using thunderbird and 2 mailclients are logged in at the same time (one workstation and one laptop). [Dovecot] auth issues on centos5 with ldap backend

Hi, We've had some issues with auth. /var/log/secure is full of 1000s of these lines: Jun 4 19:12:08 khan dovecot-auth: pam_unix(dovecot:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=dovecot ruser= rhost=127.0.0.1 user=user123 Users can usually login OK with their ldap credentials, but occasionally logins slow to a crawl if not outright fail, esp people checking mail through Squirrelmail. Things get better after a dovecot restart. Googling around, I thought if we switched the order or disabled the second passdb we had configured for our dovecotadmin account, these failures would go away but that did not happen. Any thoughts or additional info I can provide? Pardon the unusual install prefix. We're trying to keep the source install separated from the ancient dovecot rpm shipped in rhel5. [Dovecot] Antispam plugin custom behavior?

Hello, I currently have a setup on my system with what I call "magic folders" to enable spam filter training. Here's how it works: 1. If you have a false-negative, put the spam into the Spam.Report folder 2. If you have a false-positive (which has all kinds of ugly spamassassin protective markup in it), put the message into the Spam.NotSpam folder Currently what happens is that a cron job comes along every five minutes and processes the messages in those folders. In the case of the NotSpam folder, it strips the message of the spamassassin markup, retrains the bayesian net, and redelivers the message (e.g. via deliver). In the case of the Report folder, the message is used to train the bayesian net (among other things) and then deleted. I'd love to be able to trigger these actions when the mail is moved, rather than have a cron job inspecting the mailboxes. I looked into the antispam plugin (http://johannes.sipsolutions.net/Projects/dovecot-antispam) which seems nice but doesn't appear sufficiently generic for my needs. What would really work is if I could get it set up such that putting a message into either of those directories is turned into piping the message to a script of my choosing (a different one for each folder). We have a few users that every so often get empty data in their message overview. From and subject are empty, and the date is 1-Jan-1970. When opening the message in full view, all things are fine. Also, the data in the actual maildir file is fine. It looks a lot like the issue described here: http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2008-March/029282.html The server is Linux, ext3, no NFS, and Dovecot 1.1.rc4. The few clients that have had this problem so far have been Outlook Express. What can be done to debug this? Thanks, Anders.

I've tried compiling 1.1.rc9 on everything to hand and I get various compilation warnings (but the compilation finishes). I don't know whether any of them are worth tracking down? [Dovecot] Lucene index not updated when one saves a message from one folder to the other

I'm running 1.1 rc8, and I enabled the Lucene indexes. I find that if a bunch of messages arrive in INBOX and I then move them to archive, the next time I do an X-TEXT-FAST search, Dovecot has to re-index the mails that I think it had indexed when they were in INBOX. This seems silly, since Dovecot was the one copying them (and then deleting, since that's what I mean by move). Will this change? -- Asheesh. -- Elliptic paraboloids for sale.

Hi, We are getting the users homedir from sql ( in dovecot-sql.conf) and using the convert script we have the following settings: mail_location = dbox:%h/dbox convert_mail = maildir:%h/Maildir This just gives an error on all the folders saying they already exists. Hello, could someone help. I have installed Dovecot+SSL+TLS+Thunderbird and all is well except one thing. After installing TBird and adding the required data (smtp server and auth info, imap/pop server and auth info) I am able to view mail in my TBird Inbox BUT Trash and Sent don't work - it pops up saying folder doesn't exist on the server - can't the darn thing, auto create a folder on the server instead of cribbing to me??? Is there a painless (automatic way) to auto create client directories on the Dovecot server (in the users home dir on the server - i am using maildir/). I don't want to maintain a list of clients(TBird, outlook, eudora..) with their directory structure and then remember what user has what clients installed and Gahhh! How do i do this?? Is this explained/documented somewhere in simple language(for a newbie - I'm struggling through the RFC's but they are awfully obscure and don't seem to answer my question directly)? I've also googled but that's worse. Thank you for your patience and time. I'd like to add that I plan to sync GMail, Dovecot and a multitude-of-stupid-clients in some mysterious way so any advice in advance is more than welcome.

Hello. I'm having the following problem with dovecot 1.0.12 and above, on a FreeBSD 7.0 system - I'm trying to run pop3-login from inetd and I keep getting this error after authentication: May 25 09:46:19 charlie dovecot: POP3(gelu): /libexec/ld-elf.so.1: environment corrupt; missing value for no-nuls oe-ns-eoh The problem persists if I uncomment the lines with no-nuls oe-ns-eoh in dovecot.conf. I've also tried running pop3-login from tcpserver/ucspi-tcp and I still get the same error. Version 1.0.1 works fine on a similar setup. Please reply if you have any idea regarding a fix for this error. I need to run dovecot under a tcp wrapper of some kind (preferably inetd) as the standalone daemon doesn't allow any method to restrict access by IP. The allow_nets extra field doesn't help much as I'm using PAM and do not want to maintain yet another passdb. Restricting access via firewall rules is not an option. Until I find a way to restrict access by IP address, dovecot will only listen on the private IP address (192.168.100.1). Hi people! I just switched one of my servers from Courier to Dovecot. Planned to do it anyway but had to do it faster after the discovery that courier [the version I had installed, at least] returns malformed headers for a few messages, causing Outlook Express to completely ignore them. Curiously, they were visible in Squirrelmail and Nokia Series60 e-mail client. Overal I am quite happy but have one little problem. Hi, I'm getting this assertion after making an upgrade from 1.1rc3 to 1.1rc7. Deleting the index files solves the problem. This seems to happen only to some accounts but I haven't managed to find which ones. I'm using dovecot's deliver to deliver the messages. Hi, this is my first post to the list, I'm not a member, please cc me directly. I'm converting from courier imap, and want to bring a special problem to your attention: I would like to use auth_bind and prefetch, b/c due to data security restriction the user information is only visible to the user himself. From http://wiki.dovecot.org/AuthDatabase/LDAP I found out that pass_attrs only works if no userdn template is set. But when unsetting userdn, dovecot-auth still tries to find the information from pass_attrs before binding. I'm no coding expert so here is my question: would it be possible to make pass_attrs work with userdn? If yes, even prefetch would work. right now, when using userdn, pass_attrs is ignored, but also userdb and user_attrs is impossible for me, because it is done anonymously, it can't reuse the bind from passdb, and can't construct a bind as passdb could. for now I defined a dummy user in ldap, but that's not the ideal solution, since then this dummy user has access to all usernames, uids, uidNumbers and gidNumbers. thank you for your attention best regards matthias subik ps: is there a list of all keywords and parameters?

more on the strange quota error....this is in BSD, with quotas referenced on an NFS, and users provided by YP/NIS quotactl(Q_GETQUOTA, /.amd_mnt/crock/vol/v_user1/jdoe) failed: Operation not supported this looks strange to me, as the specification for quotactl states the function Q_GETQUOTA: Q_GETQUOTA Get disk quota limits and current usage for the user or group (as determined by the command type) with identifier id. The addr argument is a pointer to a struct dqblk structure (defined in <ufs/ufs/quota.h>). this directory path is not a valid UID...rather, its my user home directory path!

Seems to work in my tests, but who knows if it breaks something.. Although most of the code is called only if -c parameter is given. Anyway we really should have a comprehensive test suite written some day (yes, help is really wanted for this :). So let's hope this is the last RC release. If there aren't any major problems I'll release v1.1.0 in a couple of weeks. I'll also try to merge all my different development trees into a single v1.2 code tree within a few weeks. v1.2.0 will probably be released this summer as well, since it mainly has new features that don't change existing code all that much (CONDSTORE is a bit invasive though). + deliver: Added -c parameter to provide path to delivered mail. This allows maildir to save identical mails to multiple recipients using hard links. - rc6/rc7 broke POP3 with non-Maildir formats - mbox: Saving a message without a body or the end-of-headers line could have caused an assert-crash later. - Several dbox fixes

Hello. I would like to know it a 'proper' solution exist to get the size (in MB) of a maildir. Actually, to get it, I do a 'du -sh' but I'm not sure it is a good solution. And it does not return the same value than imap-quota. Is there a command, a tool, in Dovecot to get it? i have a dovecot setup that uses an nfs backend to store maildir data. i want to enforce fs quotas, but whenever theyre selected and i attempt to query them from thunderbird...this appears in the log quotactl(Q_GETQUOTA, /.amd_mnt/crock/vol/v_user1/jdoe) failed: Operation not supported i also occasionally see this. dovecot: statfs(/users/jdoe/Maildir) failed: Permission denied i can manually query quotas from a terminal on the mail system though.

I did (re-)compile dovecot (1.1rc8) today, with managesieve (0.10.2) and sieve-plugin (1.1.5). I did modify the existing dovecot-devel port, adding managesieve patch as an OPTION, and I added a 'dovecot-managesieve-devel' port, and a 'dovecot-sieve-devel' one to be complete... Not sure everything is very complete, but at least it works for me=E2=84=A2= , and if it can help anybody to save some time... [Dovecot] Re maintenance of the dovecot-uidlist files

Greetings all, I am new to dovecot, using ver 1.0.13 and IMAP with ~/Maildir delivery. I have noticed that the entries in the dovecot-uidlist files don't seem to get updated when an email is deleted or moved to .Trash. It appears that this list list would just keep growing over time, being full of no longer used filenames, and must tend to increase its processing overhead. I have also noticed that if I manually delete that file and the 3 other dovecot* files, that it gets rebuilt with only what's present. Is there provision in the dovecot code to automatically clean this up periodically? If so, are there any configuration params for it? If not, what is the preferred method for maintenance in this regard? Thank you, Dan

Hi When activating antispam plugin in imap protocol, when sending an email, Evolution/Thunderbirdkeeps infinitely "Sending authentication information", and Dovecor logs shows "dovecot: May 28 10:14:35 Error: child 6910 (imap) killed with signal 11"; lots of empty folders in /tmp are created with names like "antispam-mail-ZvyWeZ". I am using Dovecot1.1 rc15 compiled from Debian source repositories (http://xi.rename-it.nl/debian/) and last version of antispam plugin, obtained with git. Any idea or help to debug? Thanks.

[Dovecot] How to set MDNSent flag on a large amount of mails?

Hi, after having moved a big mail archive to IMAP, I've now got the following problem: The MUA asks to send an MDN on all those old messages that contain the 'Disposition-Notification-To' header when opened. I'd like to set the $MDNSent flag on those (>10000 in a deeply nested directory structure) mails. After having read http://wiki.dovecot.org/MailboxFormat/Maildir I wrote a script that changed the filename of mails in all directories that contained the header, so that the filename contained a 'b' in the last part of the filename (after the comma), because I found '1 $MDNSent' in Maildir/dovecot-keywords. I then discovered that there can be a 'dovecot-keywords' file in each directory, and all of those files can have different flags in different order. Do I really need to write a script that evaluates each dovecot-keywords file, figures out which letter corresponds to the flag and rename the files (per directory) accordingly? Isn't there a more simple way? [Dovecot] spamassassin, postfix with dovecot lda?

Hi all, I am trying to setup a mail server using postfix (virtual_mailboxes), spamassassin and dovecot, along with SQL where appropriate. From my research so far I realized that, for several reasons, it is required for me to use dovecot LDA instead of maildrop, local, procmail or other alternatives. My configuration was working flawlessly, until spamassassin per-user configuration came to play. If I just wanted an MTA anti-spam gateway, I could directly call spamassassin via master.cf, or through some helper "content-filter-application" (like amavis or amavisd-new), and everything would work just fine (I tried and tested many such configurations with success). But when antispam per user preferences became my concern (Bayesian filters and classifier), I realized that spamd should be called by the LDA. With procmail this was a trivial issue, with dovecot-lda I was unable to find any solution on the web or other documentation. So my question is as follows: Is there a way to call spamc from dovecot-LDA (and/or dovecot-sieve), or is there an alternate way to do this for a site with virtual mailboxes configured with dovecot-lda? The first v1.1 release that actually deserves the "release candidate" name. It contains everything I require from v1.1.0 release. There are two bugs left that I'd like to get fixed, but they won't block v1.1.0 release: * index_mailbox_set_recent_uid() assert (reported by Diego Liziero) * Maildir not always finding new messages and returning them as empty (reported by Anders). The major change in v1.1.rc6 release is the SORT indexing half-rewrite. I hadn't much stress tested that code before, and once I started I just kept finding more and more weird bugs and it became extremely difficult to figure out how to fix them, so I finally decided to just redesign how it's supposed to work and then implemented that. The resulting sort code is a lot cleaner and it should also perform better (although it could still be improved a bit: the basic binary searching could be replaced with one that first binary searches between already-looked-up sort-strings and only after that binary searches the resulting space which requires slower sort-string lookups). Hopefully there are also no stupid bugs left like returning messages in wrong sort order. :) I've been wasting time this past week getting new stuff for my new apartment, but that's nearly done now. I think (hope) I'm going to be more productive in here, there are less neighbours behind walls/floors (just 1), so less potential for annoying noises. :) Thinking also seems to work better when there's more space to walk around. And finally, the changes since v1.1.rc5: * Index file format changed a bit. If an older Dovecot v1.1 reads index files updated by rc6+, they may give "Invalid header record size" or "ext reset: invalid record size" warnings. v1.0 won't give these errors. * IMAP: LIST .. RETURN (X-STATUS) command return now LIST entries before STATUS entries. * zlib plugin: Uncompress if the message begins with zlib header instead of looking at the 'Z' flag. This fixes copying with hard links. Based on a patch by Richard Platel. + IMAP: SORT index handling code was half-rewritten to fix several bugs when multiple sessions were sorting at the same time. The new code is hopefully also faster. + Maildir: If POP3 UIDL extra field is found from dovecot-uidlist, it's used instead of the default UIDL format (or X-UIDL: header). This allows easily preserving UIDLs when migrating from other POP3 servers. Patch by Nicholas Von Hollen @ Mailtrust. + Maildir: ,W=<vsize> is now always added to maildir filenames + deliver: Avoid reading dovecot-uidlist's contents if possible. + Added %T modifier = Trim whitespace from end of string - IMAP: Fixed some bugs in LIST-EXTENDED implementation. - IMAP: If client tries to change the selected mailbox state while another command is still running, wait until the command is finished. This fixes some crashes and other unwanted behavior. - allow_nets userdb setting was broken with big endian CPUs

Hi, I have gone through the patches that are used in the Fedora package and probably only the "mkcert-permissions" [1] can be considered to be included upstream. It is dated into package version 1.0-0.beta2.3, but I cannot find any particular reason for the inclusion (like a bug in bugzilla, etc.). Some (winbind support, quota warnings) were obsoleted by dovecot 1.1, two are used for distro specific settings. A Client runs a RAS network. Users access mailboxes using Outlook Express. The server runs dovecot-1.0.3-13_60. Almost a week ago users began to report that they can't retrieve their mail. The session starts, they seem to retrieve messages, but then the client reports a problem and the session is terminated. [Dovecot] Purging Deleted Messages

I noticed today I checked a users mailbox with the mutt command: mutt -f /home/bob/email/ There I saw he had 100 messages that had been deleted but not yet purged from his inbox so they're still using up disk storage on my email server. My question is does Dovecot have a process to automatically delete these messages after a certain period of time? I would like to think that they don't just sit in a users mailbox for years waiting to be purged, right? Does anyone know exactly how this works? I checked my own mailbox using mutt and I see 11 messages that are deleted from my Thunderbird client but are still on the server (marked for deletion). How long do these messages stay there? -- Man your battle stations...

Hi We're in the phase of converting our existing unix-based users to virtual users. Goal is to make mail-spool totaly independent of home-spool. For that reason, NO files can be written to home. I've solved the problem for all files, except for .dovecot.lda-dupes. I can see in duplicate.c #define DUPLICATE_PATH "~/.dovecot.lda-dupes" I thought being clever and override in the userdb passwd following args = home=/var/spool/mail/%1n/%2n/%n but deliver totaly ignores that. does anybody has tips? kind regards Arne

http://dovecot.org/tmp/deliver-multiple.diff for Dovecot v1.1 implements -p <path> parameter for deliver, which reads the input mail from the specified path instead of stdin. With maildir and hardlink copying enabled, it also tries to hard link the file to destination instead of copying it. So to get the same mail delivered to multiple recipients using hard links, you'd have to write a small wrapper script that stored the mail temporarily somewhere and then called deliver for each recipient using the -p parameter. Any thoughts on if this should go to v1.1 like this? Some problems: - If you're not using a single UID/GID you probably have to make the file world-readable. - A wrapper script is kind of ugly, so it would be nice if deliver took a list of all recipients as input. But the deliver code is currently ugly enough that this would require larger changes. - Am I forgetting something?..

Right. This isn't implemented yet. Also I don't think it should rely on Message-ID: header proving the uniqueness. There are two ways this can be implemented reliably: 1) If the message is sent to multiple recipients using same RCPT TO command, all the recipients could be given to deliver as parameters, and deliver would know that it's the same message and they could be hard linked. 2) Keep some kind of a hash database where hash is e.g. SHA1 sum of the entire message. All messages could be then stored in some global directory and hard linked from there to users' mailboxes. When receiving a new message using an existing hash, it could still compare byte-by-byte the files to make sure that it's not a hash collision before hard linking the file. 1) probably wouldn't be too difficult to implement and probably would solve your problem (assuming the problem is that people are mailing 100MB attachments to everyone inside a company). But I don't think I have time to do it myself..

My company recently changed mail server from cyrus to dovecot. The problem is that dovecot does not support hard links for message files with same message ID. I turned on the ‘maildir_copy_with_hardlinks’ option in dovecot.conf, but it does not seems to have relation to this problem, am I misunderstood? Hard links are created when move or copy messages from one folder to other folder, but when deliver creates messages this option does not works. Our mail storage will be exhausted in few days. If you have some idea to solve this problem, please please help me. Or If you fix this problem, I will happily pay for it at reasonable cost. I installed dovecot 1.0.13 and postfix 2.5.1. Whenever I try to search on my dovecot test install, dovecot dies. It immediately spawns a new process, which the client tries to connect to, and send search commands to, causing that to die, and so forth. This loop means I have to kill either the server or the client. Running Dovecot 1.0.13 from/on Debian testing, rebuilt with vpopmail support and no other source changes. Vpopmail version is 5.4.25, latest stable. [Dovecot] fetchmail on demand

I hoping this is an RTFM ... and somebody can point me at the correct 'FM' :-) I've just spent a while setting my new Debian , allways-on box in what I suspect is a generally useful configuration. I have fetchmail(1) collect mail from many mailboxes via pop3. I store these mails in different mboxs according to rules in procmail(1) I then offer these out to the household via imap in dovecot(1) . I have fetchmail(1) set to poll the ISPs every 5 minutes, this seems to work fine, but there are two issues: 1: The constant polling keeps the disk spinning for no good reason (most of the time) 2: If I check my mail via a mail reader using imap to the local mboxes ...there could be mail sitting on the ISP servers I don't see (for 5 mins) Now what would be much nicer, would simply be to have dovecot(1) issue the fetchmail(1) command whenever it it got an imap request. I general what I guess I would like is: "When a request comes in (via imap) fork off a command who's name is given in the conf file. ... imap_pre_cmd="xxx" -- Graeme

Hi, I know this request is a a little off-topic but may be interesting for dovecot users (at least i hope!) Does anybody has already had an experience with a calendar sharing solution including a webcalendar and an outlook connector, "compatible" with dovecot ? Today, there are many projects aiming to be a "M$ Exchange Killer" (such as Zimbra, OBM, open-exchange, etc) but they offers a global package with MTA and imap server included. I saw the page about BynariConnector (http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/BynariConnector) but unfortunatly they do not provide a webmail :( I'm afraid What I am looking for is a shared agenda solution providing a webcalendar, an outlook connector and eventually a pda connector, using (or not) dovecot, and a corporate ldap server... [Dovecot] no bookeeping using public folders

Using dovecot 1.0.10. In the config: namespace public { separator = / hidden = no prefix = Flock/ location = maildir:/home/baratin/PublicMaildir:CONTROL=~/Maildir/control/Flock:INDEX=/var/dovecot/index/%u/Flock } This should be a public mail folder owned by "baratin", "read only" for all other users. Every user has his/her own control and index area related to this public folder. I have verified, they are owner and "group" of the respective control and index area. The problem, while using Thunderbird: The "read only" user can delete messages or mark then read. But after a new session, all the messages are still "new". Of course, only "baratin" is the owner. The problem, while using mutt and IMAP: mutt refuse to change any flag because the folder is "read only". Of course, this is correct. My question: Why is no bookkeeping maintained for "other" users, although every one has his/her own control and index structure ? Thanks a lot ! Claude

I am running Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 on Windows XP. When I try to delete one of the folders I get a dialog with the following "The current command did not succeed. The mail server responded: Target mailbox doesn't allow inferior mailboxes." I am running dovecot version 1.0.13-6.fc8 under Fedora 8. Hello, I am the new maintainer of dovecot for Fedora and Red Hat and so I am trying to cleanup some old reported bugs. One of them is a problem when "deliver" writes of temporary files into /tmp are blocked by SELinux policy (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=424091) From the SELinux's point of view it is bad when system services try to write into /tmp (for detail see http://danwalsh.livejournal.com/11467.html) The solution looks simple - just to switch from /tmp to PKG_RUNDIR (line 472 in deliver.c for dovecot 1.0) for writing the temp files. Recently we changed Postfix to use Dovecot for our SASL authentication and we ran into trouble with some of our clients having extraneous spaces at the end of their usernames. The quick fix was to add a space to username_chars. The slightly longer fix was a pretty simple patch to Dovecot. I put the trimming in auth_request_fix_username. I didn't think it warranted a full strfuncs function. If there is a better way to do this I'm all ears. hi, i'm using 1.1.rc5 but the same error occured with 1.0.13. the dovecot package was installed on centos 5 with rpm's from atrpms. exim 4.69. everything works fine except the vacation's from sieve. don't get me wrong, sieve works for everything, including mailforwards, or sorting in subfolders. but when i have a vacation, the script is compiled, but it produces the following output: sieve_execute_bytecode(/var/virtuser/test@<adomain>.sievec) failed (the "<adomain>" is replaced with the real domain of the user). i use virtual users in different domains. the sieve-scripts are generated by horde/ingo and stored via ftp in the "/var/virtuser" directory with the pattern "%u.sieve". the "sievec" files are up-to-date, because: a) i can delete the "sievec" files and they are regenerated b) i can "sieved" them and get an disassembled output with the vacation rule inside but when executing the script (when a mail arrives) the upper error is logged and no vacation is processed. the same error occured with 1.0.13 thank you </usc>

[Dovecot] Vanishing maildirsize files with 1.0.7 using 'deliver' via postfix

Aloha, I've searched the list and have found no similar reports, so I'm asking here. We have 3 RH5.1 boxes running the stock Postfix 2.3.3, but due to issues with the stock Dovecot 1.0rc15, Redhat supplied us with the version of Dovecot 1.0.7 that will be in Redhat 5.2. The mail store is automounted per-user from a Sun box via NFS. We were using it with no problems until last Friday, when we attempted to implement quotas. I had done quite a lot of testing on a single system, so I didn't anticipate any issues here. I created maildirsize files for each user in the NFS-mounted /var/spool/mail/$USER and everything seemed fine. I changed mailbox_command to /usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver in postfix main.cf. Mail was delivered, quota files updated, all good. However almost immediately a maildirsize folder vanished. Soon after another, then another, and now we're missing nearly 40 of them. Any ideas as to why they're vanishing? Something to do with NFS? I've tried to trigger it by massively sending to the same user on all three systems but have yet to reproduce it at will. Any clues would be appreciated. For reasons of support I cannot upgrade to a later dovecot at this time. Best Regards, - jason

Hallo, i have a question for the quota with dovecot. I plan to go from our cyrus installation to dovecot. I have just install dovecot without problem with mysqldb and quota per user. Quota work well and the user receive always via Webmail or client the quota information. My question is: With cyrus the mailadministrator has the possibility to see the quota for all users with the command "quota". Output or example: 300000 9 28305 user.tinfo With that way the administrator could have always a look if some users have quota problems. My question is, if dovecot has some similar command for the administrator? Thanks in advance. Markus

Hello I posted an earlier post on problems with getting usernames. That one is solved, thank you. I'm currently having trouble executing checkpassword-reply. I couldn't find any documentation about this and couldn't find anyone who is using checkpassword-reply. No sample scripts, no examples, and the documentation on the site is extremely scarce. The wiki docs indicate I should just execute it - which I do - but that does not help. Also, the debugging isn't very meaningful. I'm definitely changing the UID and GID, but it's not apparent in the maillog. The fie permissions on checkpassword-reply show I could execute it under any user and I've tried that with "sudo -u <user> /path/to/checkpassword-reply. On a post somewhere in the vortex of the internet someone said Dovecot does not allow any uid/gid under 99 (which is why I tried 300), but I couldn't find any documentation for that anywhere in the wiki either. What am I missing and is there anything I've missed that would have prevented me from emailing the mailing list with this long email? Thanks, Sawyer.

Hello, I read in the wiki (http://wiki.dovecot.org/MailboxFormat/mbox) about "From Escaping": "Dovecot doesn't currently do this escaping however. Instead it prevents this confusion by adding Content-Length headers so it knows later where the next message begins. Dovecot doesn't either remove the '>' characters before sending the data to clients. Both of these will probably be implemented later." As I understand it, this makes the mbox format of dovecot slightly incompatible with other mbox-capable clients, because if they read the data files directly, they may understand a line starting with an unescaped 'From ' as the start of a new message. Right ? Are there any plans to implement this escaping in the future (1.1.x or 2.0.x?) Thanks, -- Nicolas

Hi, I'm a bit confused by the fact that the 'To' header is being modified by sieve when a message is being redirected. RFC3028 states in chapter 4.3: > The "redirect" action is used to send the message to another user at > a supplied address, as a mail forwarding feature does. All, Version: 1.1.rc5 Solaris x86 on ZFS Shared Folder Bug, renamed a folder with sub folders (Maildir format) After the rename the subscriptions file is own by the person who renamed the folders, and access is owner rw only. Instead it should be the same as dovecot-shared which would general be rw owner, and rw group for a shared folder. Cheers Damon.
