[Dovecot] Can't create subfolders when activating namespaces, e.g. private/public

Hi, i am using hardy dovecot, 1.0.10. If i enable namespaces (the private and a public one) i am unable to create new subfolders in my private namespace, only top level folders works. There is nothing in the log about that error even if i set mail_debug = yes. If i comment out everything (no namespaces at all, implicit private one), it works again. Any hints whats going wrong, why is my client getting the message about not being able to create this subfolder? kinds regards Torsten

Hi I have a mixed configuration for MAILDIR und MBOX accounts LDA is exim. For maildir exim writes a maildirsize file and I can see the IMAP contingent in my mailclient. But I can't find a solution for mbox. Hi, I use a non-root user to run auth program and get an error: auth-worker.18163) failed: Permission denied and cannot start dovecot. But with the same configration at another server, it works fine. If I use root, it works also. Any help? GCC 4.3 turns out to fail entirely as reported by Joel Johnson. * Fixed auto-detection of Sieve implementation during ./configure. It now produces a proper error when the directory is invalid. Hi, I've upgraded mail server to dovecot-1.1, on solaris-10 with mysql user database. I used sql query "SELECT NULL as password, login as user, concat('/mail/var/dovecot/',login) AS userdb_home, 501 AS userdb_uid, 501 AS userdb_gid FROM users WHERE login='%n' AND password=old_password('%w')" with dovecot-1.0.15 and it worked perfectly. But since upgrade the server can not authenticate any users, complaining in info_log: "Empty password returned without no_password". How to set up such things in dovecot-1.1? [Dovecot] Users can't delete an email (Totally Random effect)

Hello all... Found a weird one here. I tried to search the web but I'm not having luck so I thought I'd hit the mailing list. We have noticed off and on all school year that every so often a user gets an email that they just can't delete using Thunderbird or Outlook over IMAP (we do not support Pop3 anymore.) Essentially the user clicks the email and takes it to the trash. When they empty the trash the email appears again in their inbox as if it was new! Up until this point I would just tell people to login to Usermin which is still set to access the email natively through the maildir format and delete it that way. What we have found out is that emails which have their info fields repeated twice are emails which can't be deleted. As far as the vitals go: We are running Dovecot 1.0.14 now, but I have been able to observe this problem through a few of the last versions. The server runs Slamd 64 10.2 (Opteron 64 CPUs) and all of the home directories are on a ReiserFS formatted Volume Anything else I can tell you please let me know and of course any info anybody can tell me about how to make this weirdness go away would be greatly appreciated. [Dovecot] Poor pop3 over nfs performance

Hi, About a week ago I upgraded our reasonably heavily loaded mail servers from a pretty recent courier version to dovecot-1.1rc10. IMAP performance on dovecot is amazing, however POP3 performance is worse than courier :-( I have uploaded some munin graphs taken today to http://linweb.atlas.pipex.net/dovecot/; the dovecot server is handling about 2000 pop logins/sec and 300 imap sessions (but these are negligible in terms of nfs ops). The courier server is handling a similar number of pop logins/sec but no imap (slightly less traffic overall but a similar number of logins). As you can see, dovecot seems to issue an awful lot more read requests than courier. The big spike at 10am is where I tried setting the :INDEX=MEMORY flag on dovecot as I assumed that's what courier is doing. I've also attached graphs of the relative network usage - as you can see, dovecot is using up to 100mbps whereas courier is using less than 10mbps; I believe this is due to the read. I initially assumed this high read load was due to courier building up its index files, but this has now been happening for about a week with little variation. The servers are both centos 5.0 (perhaps 5.1 actually, but with the latest centosplus kernel which fixes the nfs lookup bug in the standard kernels); and are not running any other nfs programs. The NFS server is a high performance NAS unit - no issues there. We're only using Maildirs; relevant config options are: mmap_disable: yes dotlock_use_excl: no mail_nfs_storage: yes mail_nfs_index: yes lock_method: dotlock maildir_copy_preserve_filename: yes Thanks, Mark

[Dovecot] Maildir and Invalid data in file

Hi Timo, Regarding our conversation in IRC, I'm attaching the uidlist and copying in the original message just in case. I'm using dovecot version 1.0.13 on reiserfs on hardware RAID-0, but I'm getting the following error in the logs every time one user tries to access his old mails in the .Sent directory: dovecot: 2008-06-23 15:09:46 Error: IMAP(marek.chajecki): Invalid data in file /var/mail/Maildir/marek.chajecki/.Sent/dovecot-uidlist As a result he fails to get access to the emails in this folder. I've googled a bit and read that deleting the uidlist makes dovecot recreate it, but after some time the same thing happens. It's a new hard drive, so I don't think this is a hard drive fault. Some additional info: this server is being used by about 200 users who get about 100 emails daily each one of them. I have a problem with the Dovecot configuration; I have my Postfix server in the host: 192.168.100.100, and I have installed Dovecot in the host: 192.168.1.253. Everything goes right, but I can't see any mail that I had received in my mailbox. How can I configure the dovecot.conf in order to use an mbox placed in a different host?? Thanks. Hi, I tried the FTS (and FTS Squat) plugin today, and it works as advertised. But: On my 13000 folders with 160000 mails maildir I use for testing, the speed increase is not as big as one would wish (it still takes several minutes to complete a search). Is my assumption correct, that there is no way to do a search over a big IMAP folder hierarchy in a reasonable amount of time, because each folder has to be 'selected', and only one folder can be selected at once? Hi, It seems my previous mail has been lost, I apologize if this is a duplicate. I am using Dovecot 1.1.1 with user's INBOX in /var/mail and other folders in their home directories. I have setup file system quota on /var/mail to limit their usage. I would like dovecot to display such information in IMAP client and ignore all others. The error message below appears in the system log quite frequently. I have run a test which shows that this message is due to 2 or more users accessing the same mail (i.e connecting using the same userid). This happens for various reasons including the fact that some users have their client machine set up (typically using Thunderbird) with more than one account within a single Thunderbird configuration. Thus, more than one person may be reading or sending mail from a single Dovecot account. Hi all, I crawled through the archives for a bit but didn't see anything helpful, so I apologize if this has already been addressed. We've been dying to move from Courier to Dovecot across our whole infrastructure for quite some time, but until recently our setup wasn't possible until this happened: "Dovecot allows mailboxes and their indexes to be modified by multiple computers at the same time, while still performing well. This means that Dovecot works with NFS and clustered filesystems." Now that NFS is officially supported, we figured why not make the switch. All of our mail touches NFS in some way, so we need to check on the stability before completely migrating. In test trials we're having issues with the NFS'd index becoming corrupted. Here's the setup: * Linux workstations running Fedora 8/9 i386 and a locally called Dovecot 1.0.14 * NFS'd homedir with Maildir setup * NFS is on Solaris 9 sparcv9 (64bit) running Dovecot 1.0.14 Now this setup is just a test example and not exactly what we'll be running in production, but it tipped up the problem either way. Since the index is shared by both the Linux i386 machine and the sparc64 Solaris machine, if mail is accessed from both, lets say with Pine for example, the index becomes corrupted and breaks. As long as only one architecture only ever touches it there are no issues. I'm assuming this is an endian issue, which would make the most sense. Is there a way around this with flags or server options? Is this something that has maybe been addressed in 1.1.0? Unfortunately, we are not going to be able to move to Dovecot across all of our systems until this is no longer an issue. We run a lot of mixed environments that have everything from Linux i386/x86_64 to Solaris 9 64 to Windows. If a user accesses IMAP from a Windows box, then logs into the front end which is a Linux x86_64 box and runs Pine, and all of this is on a Solaris sparc NFS system, we're going to have serious issues with the index. ;) Any help would be appreciated. Hi all, I wanna to set up shared folders for a couple of users and I'd like that everyone could keep the \Seen flag as private. So if user #1 reads some messages and user #2 not, those messages appear as "unseen" to #2 and "seen" to #1. I've implemented shared folders using namespaces with every user having their own "control" and "private" directories. But all the flags (\Seen included) are "shared". Am I on the right path? [Dovecot] managesieve server aware?

Just upgraded to Dovecot 1.1 and thought I'd try out managesieve plugin. My situation is I have two front end proxy boxes and four storage nodes in the back. I have been able to load the managesieve plugin just like I should on the storage nodes, but not on the proxy boxes. My proxy boxes have multiple server sections to deal with unique configurations for 5-7 different mail domains: server mail.host1.com { listen a.b.c.d protocols = imap imaps pop3 pop3s ..... } server mail.host2.com { listen a.b.c.e protocols = imap pop3 .... } If I add the managesieve to the protocols line like I do on my storage nodes, I get this: Error: Can't access mail module directory: /usr/local/lib/dovecot/managesieve: No such file or directory Funny thing is /usr/local/lib/dovecot/managesieve does not exist on the the proxy boxes. It also does not exist on the storage boxes where managesieve loaded just fine. Anybody have any ideas or suggestions? -c

Hi all, We've been running Dovecot since December '07 with with no glitches. It's a great solid piece of software, thanks so much Timo!! I thought I'd try out 1.1.1, so I brought it down and tried compiling it on AIX, using the IBM compiler, xlc. It's what I've used all along. Hi, I'm coming from courier-imap and i'm trying to migrate to dovecot. I can't find how to create a maildir with a quota file(maildirsize) I saw that if there was a maildirsize it would get its quota from there but can't find how to create that file. I'm using pam auth and would like to set different quotas for each users. With courier-imap there is a useful command : maildirmake -q 100000S Maildir/ to assign a quota to a maildir. [Dovecot] local rimapd not working with 1.1.1, fatal error

Hi all, I just upgraded a couple of Fedora 9 workstations to try out 1.1.1 over NFS'd homedir's and I'm having trouble running dovecot in the same configuration we were with 1.0.14. It's fairly simple, we use pine/alpine and set a couple of variables to fork rimapd directly: * smtp-server=host (for the main mail machine) * user-domain=host (same) * set the inbox-path={localhost}INBOX * ssh-command=%s %s %s %s * ssh-path=/etc/rimapd In rimapd we specifiy: exec /usr/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail imap 2>/dev/null In dovecot.conf we specify: protocols = imap listen = localhost mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir:INDEX=<path>/index/%u:CONTROL=<path>/control/%u namespace public { separator = . prefix = INBOX. inbox = yes } protocol imap { mail_executable = /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap mail_plugins = quota imap_quota } ...and away we go. This enables us to run pine and dovecot locally on the workstations since our home directories are all NFS'd to a central server, essentially giving us Maildir access anywhere local. This has been working great for a long time, and we still use it with 1.0.14, but as soon as I upgraded to 1.1.1, pine is telling me: "rsh to IMAP server timed out" "localhost,143: Connection refused" I know this is very pine specific, but our pine configuration hasn't changed, only dovecot has. I check the obvious answers like perms, and ensured the same dovecot conf exists, and it does. I'm pretty stumped. It's obviously the newer dovecot causing problems, but I don't know where exactly. If I run "/usr/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail imap" manually, i still get the normal IMAP session. The only error I see anywhere is this in /var/log/maillog: Jun 24 15:36:28 host IMAP(user): : Fatal: io_loop_handle_add: epoll_ctl(1, 2): Operation not permitted That doesn't really tell me much though. Any ideas? Is dovecot taking different arguments now so my rimapd line isn't working properly? Any help would be appreciated. Hello, I'm using dovecot version 1.0.13 on reiserfs on hardware RAID-0, but I'm getting the following error in the logs every time one user tries to access his old mails in the .Sent directory: dovecot: 2008-06-23 15:09:46 Error: IMAP(marek.chajecki): Invalid data in file /var/mail/Maildir/marek.chajecki/.Sent/dovecot-uidlist As a result he fails to get access to the emails in this folder. I've googled a bit and read that deleting the uidlist makes dovecot recreate it, but after some time the same thing happens. It's a new hard drive, so I don't think this is a hard drive fault. Some additional info: this server is being used by about 200 users who get about 100 emails daily each one of them. [Dovecot] Limiting SSL (external) access to certain users ?

[Dovecot] Maildir and Invalid data in file

Hello, I'm using dovecot version 1.0.13 on reiserfs on hardware RAID-0, but I'm getting the following error in the logs every time one user tries to access his old mails in the .Sent directory: dovecot: 2008-06-23 15:09:46 Error: IMAP(marek.chajecki): Invalid data in file /var/mail/Maildir/marek.chajecki/.Sent/dovecot-uidlist As a result he fails to get access to the emails in this folder. I've googled a bit and read that deleting the uidlist makes dovecot recreate it, but after some time the same thing happens. It's a new hard drive, so I don't think this is a hard drive fault. Some additional info: this server is being used by about 200 users who get about 100 emails daily each one of them. Hi, I'm using version 1.0.13 of dovecot. I know it's somewhat dated, but that's the latest that Debian etch offers, and I would like to avoid compiling by myself if possible. dovecot is not creating the 'maildirfolder' in folders that are created via IMAP. Looking at the NEWS file, this was implemented in v1.0.rc7, so my version should have that working already. Is there anything else that needs to be done? Hey there, I'm interested in testing out using different storage formats for different folder hierarchies. I *think* this can be achieved using namespaces, but I'm not sure. Hi Timo, Thanks for the info. You are exactly right ,,after I done some researching. by default the Fedora and El distros setups up mail folders in mbox format. My Bad. I was always under the impression default was maildir.I have used sendmail>Procmail>dovecot>squirrelmail for my new setup same as the last email server setup.I found that sendmail seems to be much less CPU intensive than postfix,or I did not have the config correctly as postfix was easy to setup but really choked our email server when a secretary " bulk emailed" everyone in the school district. I have learned a lot about this in the last couple days. I thought I knew a little bit about this,but obviously I didn't know a thing. I am going to go with the default dovecot rpm that ships with EL5 1.0.1x as this does what all I need to have done. My main concern is the check_quota plugin available for Squirrelmail works,and with the dirsize quota directive put into dovecot.conf this is working very slick, and appears to be reporting very accurately.Now hopefully some teachers will not end up with 1GB mail folders!! and complaining the mail server is so slow when they check their email via Squirrelmail at home! [Dovecot] Using sork-passwd from Horde to change dovecot password

I'm using in my server dovecot and Horde to provide IMAP and Webmail for virtual users. Their password are stored in a passwd file, since the setup is quite simple and small. I'd like to use the Horde module sork-passwd to allow changing of the passwords. Apparently, this can be done for the case of passwd file by using an expect script, or simply calling a program that receives the data. It should not be hard to write a Perl (or Python, or whatever) script that does that. I'm just asking if someone has already done that and is willing to share the solution.

Hi Timo, I changed the maildir directive in my dovecot.conf as you suggested. The maildirsize file IS created now , but, the ~/mail folder structure is now showing all messed up for the user that logs into Squirrelmail for example: Before the mail_location was changed; ~/mail/Drafts,Sent,Trash,.subsciptions/.imap/Drafts,INBOX,Sent,Trash After, mail_location = maildir:~/mail ~/mail/cur/new/tmp/.Drafts,.Sent,.Trash,dovecot.index.log,subsciptions,maildirsize/.imap/Drafts/INBOX/Sent/Trash Notice how after the maildir directive change there are .DOT in front of Drafts,Sent,Trash as well as no .DOT in front of subsciptions,as well as the added cur,new,tmp directories under the ~/mail folder?? And yes this is the default EL5 install with maildir storage( not mbox). As I stated earlier, if i simply 'rpm -e dovecot' them 'rpm -ivh dovecot' with the default install of the dovecot rpm that shipps with EL5 everything comes up correctly as far as quotas for dovecot, Squirrelmail,etc. I think I may just stick with the default dovecot1.0.1.2-rc15.el rpm that ships with EL5 for now. I'm afraid of other underlying problems i may find as I we start using dovecot v1.1 when school starts then I will be in trouble! Another sidenote: After installing dovecot1.1 rpm dovecot appears to start fine with no errors,,but it is not actually listening on port 143 by doing an nmap localhost. I had to change listen = [::] to listen = * then restart dovecot,then dovecot was listening on port 143 as it should. Thanks for the help, Barry Cisna

Hello List, Getting ready to setup a new dovecot sendmail squirrelmail server for our school which is currently running on a 4 year old install of the same, which has worked like a champ by the way. --------------------- EL5 dovecot-1.1 rc10 rpm sendmail squirrelmail --------------------- Problem: I can not get my dovecot 1.1 rc10(rpm) to generate an maildirsize file in each of the users homedir. I have re-edited the dovecot.conf file many many times but still no joy. If I uninstall and install the default dovecot 1.0.1x rpm that ships with EL5 i get the maildirsize file to generate correctly without a hitch. I am wanting to use the check_quota plugin for SM this time so I need to get this functioning correctly. How would I go about troubleshooting this. The only error I get in maillog is when I log into SM I do see were dovecot tries to check for the maildirsize file but it can not find it of course and then says " skipping quota check",,so I think I have my dovecot.conf file setup correctly. Dovecot is simply not generating the maildirsize file. Following lines added to the end of dovecot.conf file: protocol imap { mail_plugins = quota imap_quota } protocol pop3 { mail_plugins = quota } # In case you're using deliver: protocol lda { mail_plugins = quota } plugin { quota = maildir quota_rule = *:storage=1GB # 10% of 1GB = 100MB quota_rule2 = Trash:storage=10%% # 20% of 1GB = 200MB quota_rule3 = Spam:storage=20%% } ,,I have reversed the above to have quota=maildir,,etc above the protocol directives as well and still no joy. [Dovecot] Random quirks in 1.1-rc11

OK - I wish I had more details but I'm using rc11 for the server and Thunderbird for the client. I'm using Maildir and I'm doing server side folder delivery using Exim. On server side folders I'm seeing the count of messages in a folder showing 22 unread messages but the messages themselves don't show up. I deleted the index files and it still didn't show up. But then I restarted dovecot and now the messages in that folder are there. I've noticed similar behavior randomly ever since I upgraded to 1.1. The 1.0 never had this problem. Wish I had more details to post.

[Dovecot] v1.2 development tree started

I merged all the new features and latest v1.1 changes under one tree: http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.2/ The changeset order is kind of weird though. The timestamps jump all around. Wonder if there's a way to reorder them so that it looks more sane.. The status of the new features: 1. CONDSTORE extension is probably the largest change. It adds new "modification sequences" for messages that increase whenever the message's metadata changes. I'll probably have to reimplement the way modseqs are calculated, because modseqs will be very useful when implementing replication and the current way just doesn't work with it. If modseq-supporting clients see the current modseqs and later the server gets upgraded to new modseqs, the clients will most likely break. So this change should be done for v1.2. 2. QRESYNC, ESEARCH, SEARCHRES and WITHIN extensions are fully implemented. QRESYNC might need some cleanups and optimizations though. 3. CONTEXT=SEARCH extension is fully implemented, but could use a few optimizations (caching PARTIAL and CONTEXT searches, maybe others too). 4. Virtual mailboxes should work fast after mailbox is opened. The initial opening could use several optimizations though. It could probably share some code with QRESYNC to avoid the full initial search (storing each backend's modseq to index header). Also if search parameters don't contain any dynamically changing data, there's no point in searching the old messages. The current design doesn't allow changing the search parameters or list of mailboxes, otherwise it breaks more or less badly. I guess I could add code to check if the dovecot-virtual file's mtime has changed and if so make it do a full resync. This anyway means that there's no way to support wildcard mailbox names (e.g. "all mailboxes"). But does anyone really want that (yet)? It'll anyway be faster/easier to implement once mailbox list indexes are implemented. I'll still have to add a new X-MAILBOX search parameter which can be used to test what the backend mailbox name is. This will be especially useful with INTHREAD extension. I guess it wouldn't hurt to have FETCH X-MAILBOX if someone wants it. 5. Thread indexes should work, but some optimizations missing and there are some small bugs left. X-REFERENCES2 thread algorithm works. 6. INTHREAD extension isn't started yet, but I'll start it soon. Hopefully won't be too tricky to get it working with virtual mailboxes and CONTEXT=SEARCH..

This happened from one user near noon on the 17th and 19th (today) of this month. From the backtrace it looks like they were searching, but I won't know for sure unless I need to ask them. Hi, I am getting a lot of warnings since upgrading to 1.1rc10 (from rc4): mbox /home2/seta/Mail/Sent: Can't find next message offset for uid=12 Almost always, it is the Sent or Trash folders that are giving these. Users aren't experiencing any problems, but the errors continue to come. Is this something I should be concerned about? Hi new to the list, but we are a long time user of Dovecot via DirectAdmin control panel. We, like everyone else, are seeing an increase in dictionary attacks of POP/IMAP. We want to block them. I've searched the mailing list and found a few recommended fail2ban, which really won't work for our case. We need to do this over many machines and not one or two. We also like to gather info at the network wide level. Hackers know about attacking specific server/ips too often and we've seen much more distributed attacks that go under the radar of one server monitoring setup. We've designed our own system and use a local RBL to distribute the blocked IPs. For ftp and ssh attacks it's worked very well. We would like to use the RBL to do the same with dovecot. >From my research it appears the best way to do this (and only currently) is with the checkpassword option. I haven't gotten it to work yet. We have: passdb checkpassword { args = /usr/local/bin/checkpassword deny = yes } As the first auth.. This should reject the connection if the IP matches. checkpassword can see TCPREMOTEIP enviornmental variable. Hello, I have some questions on how quota-warning is supposed to work. -Does it keep a state, so that it doesn't send the same warning several times? Or should the script itself do something to remember it already sent a warning? -When exactly does it run? Does it run when deliver runs? Or only when the user accesses it's mailbox? hi, may be this is a bit of topic, but i hope not. it's always a big question which is the better to choose a hosting provider to keep and manage you mail or setup your own mail server, hosting, virus and spam filter etc.. now as more and more people and company move to gmail or google apps mail service it seems google can't handle the load and it's getting more and more slower. what's more not just the imap interface but nowadays the web interface used to be hang or even stop working. it's getting more and more annoying that the speed is worst than in a 10 years ago. i thing about how can this be solved without totally give up gmail as a mail service provider (and may be they can solve it in a few months/years:-). would it be possible to create a dovecot server as an imap proxy for gmail and google apps? imho many people/company would be love to use such a setup where he can use gmail in vacation or any other time, but when the email is real critical apps (not acceptable to wait 1 minutes for an email to load or to open a folder/label) than he can use a proxy server eg. dovecot which act as a imap proxy to gmail and can be hosted on closer, faster server and this speed problem never happend. what's more it can be used as a mail backup server too. anybody has any such setup, idea? would it be possible with dovecot. any other suggestion? yours. -- Levente "Si vis pacem para bellum!"

Hi, this issue was discussed here twice in the not so far history (http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2008-January/028317.html, http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2008-February/029147.html) but I need to open it again as it makes problems for our users on one side and on the other side we don't want to diverge from the upstream sources in our packages. I agree with Timo that simply disabling the symlink following in creating the mailbox list can give a false sense of security so the question is whether a permanent solution can be developed and how it should look like? [Dovecot] Mercurial repositories for ManageSieve and Sieve

Hello Dovecot users, Recently I was asked to use Mercurial for the ManageSieve development just like Dovecot. As a matter of fact I have been using Mercurial for some time now. Now that I am back from a short and active vacation I am ready to publish my repositories. The repositories are publicly available at: http://hg.rename-it.nl/ The -patch repositories are so-called Mercurial Queues (MQ) repositories. This provides an easy (quilt-like) means to manage patches over an upstream source repository like the one that exists for Dovecot. The patches are managed in a repository called 'patches' below the .hg directory in your main repository. Currently, these MQ repositories only have the managesieve.patch witch is the actual patch I refresh and release each time Timo makes a new Dovecot release. The following command sequence shows how to incorporate the managesieve patch repository in a freshly cloned dovecot-1.1 tree: hg clone http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.1 cd dovecot-1.1 hg clone http://hg.rename-it.nl/dovecot-1.1-managesieve-patch .hg/patches hg qpush When updating the dovecot tree it is important to unapply all patches before performing 'hg pull' on the dovecot tree: hg qpop --all hg pull hg update hg qpush This otherwise results in a multi-head situation which can be resolved using a 'hg rollback' or using 'hg qpop --all' afterwards, which should gracefully clean up the situation (never merge the heads!). Updating the patch repository works as follows: hg qpop --all hg -R .hg/patches pull hg -R .hg/patches update hg qpush After 'hg qpush' the dovecot repository is patched and can be compiled as explained for the normal patch method using the .diff.gz (don't forget ./autogen.sh for compiling dovecot in a mercurial repository). The actual ManageSieve implementation for Dovecot-1.1 is available as a separate package and thus there exists a separate repository for it. Its compilation is no different from the .tar.gz releases, except for the fact that (just like for dovecot) ./autogen.sh needs to be executed before configure. The new (and highly experimental) Sieve implementation is available as the dovecot-libsieve repository. It contains a README file that should explain most of its features and the installation procedure. This is currently still not release-ready and should not be used for any important mail whatsoever. I publish this for people who want to test and play around with it to provide feedback on early bugs and (release-critical) missing features. The TODO and README files provide an overview of my current progress towards a first release. Regards, Stephan.

Hi I have just installed Dovecot (Moved from Courier-IMAP) and have just about everything running well thanks to some great docs in the wiki (Thank you to all those who contributed!) however I have not managed to get the quota warnings working yet. I have done much Googling and come back with some oldish posts which help me to understand how the quota warnings work but having looked at all this I have realised I don't have a quota-warning.sh script in /usr/local/bin where the config suggests it ought to be. In fact, I don't have a file by this name any where on the box. I have downloaded both 1.1 source (Which I'm running) and 1.0 and I can't find this anywhere in the sources or the tarball. Could some one tell me where I can find this or am I supposed to make my own? If so is there and example that I can follow? [Dovecot] Caseless folder delivery?

I'm using exim4 to deliver into dovecot 1.1, and using plus-addressing to deliver mailing lists directly to appropriate folders in my "lists" mailbox. I created a file called /folder-map.lists that looks like ## folder-map.lists dovecot: Dovecot lpedge: Linux PowerEdge ... and so on. So mail to lists-lpedge(a)jay.fm goes to the "Linux PowerEdge" folder. The one annoying thing: I'd like to avoid creating explicit folder-map entries where the plus-address suffix is identical an existing folder name. That *almost* works, but I like to name my folders with appropriate capitalization, and deliver doesn't seem to have a way to do "caseless" delivery. For instance, ideally, I wouldn't have to create the "dovecot: Dovecot" entry; mail to my lists-dovecot(a)jay.fm address would go into the "Dovecot" folder. I can't figure out how to do this. Is there a way to do that using deliver? Could there be? Relevant portions of the exim configuration follow. (And, p.s., am I using the new -a and -m options correctly? Are they used for anything yet?) [Dovecot] Need help configuering Dovecot to support folders that contain sub-folders and messages

Hi - Last year I set up a new CentOS 5 server and through the install process permitted it to set up dovecot as my IMAP server. ./dovecote --version returns "1.0.rc15" With the system up and running I moved the tar files of my old email accounts over and everything seemed to be just fine. Recently I have upgraded my primary workstation to a Mac Pro - and that of course has it's Mail application. Let me summarize briefly to be sure that I don't omit some minor detail that makes all the difference in the world. Previously I used Netscape 7.2 as my mail client and then went over to Thunderbird on the PC - in either application, under Server Settings / Advanced I had to uncheck the box "Server supports folders that contain sub-folders and messages". Then whenever I attempted to add a new subfolder I would be given a choice - "This server restricts folders to two special kinds. Allow your new folder to contain: [] Folders Only [x] Messages Only". Though perhaps not ideal, this has worked ok up till now. The Leopard Mail application doesn't seem to have this sort of support - it assumes that every folder or subfolder can and should contain both, so all I get are folders that can hold messages. This is a problem as I can't create any new folders to reorganize mail. Though I had thought about resolving this, or at least trying to when I first encountered it - life got busy. So my skills have become a bit rusty and I have not done anything about it. But now I would like to. I ported over my email and my wife's - so perhaps there is some legacy setting in those folders that prevents the bliss of folders and mail in the same subfile. But I created a new email account for my daughter and that has the same limitation. In Leopard mail, folders to hold folders look White, whereas folders to hole mail look blue. In Thunderbird Folders to hold Folders are in Italics whereas Folders to hold mail are normal font. I am also using Webmin to simplify access to the server, but I don't see anything obvious under the dovecot tool for this. The installation was the basic default, so far as I can remember. I have run Yum to update the files and at last review there was nothing outstanding. I have some (Thunderbird client, dovecot-1.0.13, Maildir) users who get an appalling amount of spam-with-attachment, and it's causing backups to take an inordinate amount of time. I'll implement some quota and server-side spam management when I go to dovecot-1.1, but in the meantime: What is the safest way to empty all messages within, but not delete, the following folders from the server command line: /home/user/Maildir/.Junk /home/user/Maildir/.Trash I don't want the Thunderbird-2.0.14 client to report corrupt indexing, or worse not show the folder at next use. Hello, Well, I have a brain-dead user (using Thunderbird 2.0.0.14) who just won't listen when I tell them not to try to move 5000+ messages at one time (or if deleting, bypass the Trash), and they managed to royally screw up their maildirs... I have two problems... 1. The /tmp directory has 9+GB in it... can I just rm tmp/* on that directory without making this problem worse? and 2. One of the directories they were moving now has 5 copies of a whole bunch of messages... I'm very dangerous when it comes to command-line work beyond really basic stuff, and my scripting skills are less than inspiring... Is there a relatively safe command-line way of finding all messages that have more than one instance, and deleting all but the last instance? Tia... -- Best regards, Charles

Hello, i'm using in my installation qmail+vpopmail and now I have migrated from courier-imap to dovecot. Dovecot is very much faster with large mailbox than courier-imap. But I have a problem. vpopmail has a feature that allows you to "Disable non webmail IMAP access", many webmail using imap as if they were, and they are, a client IMAP. vpopmail give me the ability to disabile IMAP, expect for 127.0.0.1, both for individual users than for single domain. So i can grant IMAP access, from remote client, only for some users but webmail access for all. Hi All, I tried to build dovecot-1.1.rc9 on a HP-UX machine, but failed to configure with the following message: configure: error: You don't appear to have C99 compatible vsnprintf() call The environment is like the following: - command: ./configure - uname: HP-UX B.11.23 U ia64 - aCC version: HP aC++/ANSI C B3910B A.05.55 [Dec 04 2003] Also, I tried to run `./configure CC=c99' and `./configure CC="/opt/aCC/bin/aCC -Ae" also, but the result was the same. When copying lots of (small) messages this delay has a very negative impact on copy time even though there are lots of network and system resources available. Hi, I'm using dovecot for the first time on a production server (before dovecot I used bincimapd). I have a question about the number of imap (not imap-login) processes created for a user. I've seen 100+ processes for just 1 user. So far it only occurs for 1 user, other users have just 1 imap process. I now the user is using thunderbird and 2 mailclients are logged in at the same time (one workstation and one laptop). Hi, We've had some issues with auth. /var/log/secure is full of 1000s of these lines: Jun 4 19:12:08 khan dovecot-auth: pam_unix(dovecot:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=dovecot ruser= rhost=127.0.0.1 user=user123 Users can usually login OK with their ldap credentials, but occasionally logins slow to a crawl if not outright fail, esp people checking mail through Squirrelmail. Things get better after a dovecot restart. Googling around, I thought if we switched the order or disabled the second passdb we had configured for our dovecotadmin account, these failures would go away but that did not happen. Any thoughts or additional info I can provide? Pardon the unusual install prefix. We're trying to keep the source install separated from the ancient dovecot rpm shipped in rhel5. [Dovecot] Antispam plugin custom behavior?

Hello, I currently have a setup on my system with what I call "magic folders" to enable spam filter training. Here's how it works: 1. If you have a false-negative, put the spam into the Spam.Report folder 2. If you have a false-positive (which has all kinds of ugly spamassassin protective markup in it), put the message into the Spam.NotSpam folder Currently what happens is that a cron job comes along every five minutes and processes the messages in those folders. In the case of the NotSpam folder, it strips the message of the spamassassin markup, retrains the bayesian net, and redelivers the message (e.g. via deliver). In the case of the Report folder, the message is used to train the bayesian net (among other things) and then deleted. I'd love to be able to trigger these actions when the mail is moved, rather than have a cron job inspecting the mailboxes. I looked into the antispam plugin (http://johannes.sipsolutions.net/Projects/dovecot-antispam) which seems nice but doesn't appear sufficiently generic for my needs. What would really work is if I could get it set up such that putting a message into either of those directories is turned into piping the message to a script of my choosing (a different one for each folder). Does anyone know a good way of getting my own custom behavior in here, or is my cronjob setup probably the best way? ~Kyle -- The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds. We have a few users that every so often get empty data in their message overview. From and subject are empty, and the date is 1-Jan-1970. When opening the message in full view, all things are fine. Also, the data in the actual maildir file is fine. It looks a lot like the issue described here: http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2008-March/029282.html The server is Linux, ext3, no NFS, and Dovecot 1.1.rc4. The few clients that have had this problem so far have been Outlook Express. What can be done to debug this? Thanks, Anders.

I'm running 1.1 rc8, and I enabled the Lucene indexes. I find that if a bunch of messages arrive in INBOX and I then move them to archive, the next time I do an X-TEXT-FAST search, Dovecot has to re-index the mails that I think it had indexed when they were in INBOX. This seems silly, since Dovecot was the one copying them (and then deleting, since that's what I mean by move). Will this change? -- Asheesh. -- Elliptic paraboloids for sale.

[Dovecot] Converting from maildir to dbox

Hi, We are getting the users homedir from sql ( in dovecot-sql.conf) and using the convert script we have the following settings: mail_location = dbox:%h/dbox convert_mail = maildir:%h/Maildir This just gives an error on all the folders saying they already exists. Does anyone have a config file where they have a working dbox configuration? Regards, Kjartan

Hello, could someone help. I have installed Dovecot+SSL+TLS+Thunderbird and all is well except one thing. After installing TBird and adding the required data (smtp server and auth info, imap/pop server and auth info) I am able to view mail in my TBird Inbox BUT Trash and Sent don't work - it pops up saying folder doesn't exist on the server - can't the darn thing, auto create a folder on the server instead of cribbing to me??? Is there a painless (automatic way) to auto create client directories on the Dovecot server (in the users home dir on the server - i am using maildir/). I don't want to maintain a list of clients(TBird, outlook, eudora..) with their directory structure and then remember what user has what clients installed and Gahhh! How do i do this?? Is this explained/documented somewhere in simple language(for a newbie - I'm struggling through the RFC's but they are awfully obscure and don't seem to answer my question directly)? I've also googled but that's worse. Thank you for your patience and time. I'd like to add that I plan to sync GMail, Dovecot and a multitude-of-stupid-clients in some mysterious way so any advice in advance is more than welcome.
