[Dovecot] courier IMAP to dovecot migration: folders not showing up
by Jacob Yocom-Piatt 01 Jul '08

01 Jul '08

i have been running postfix + courier-imap + cyrus sasl for several years and have some prior experience with dovecot + postfix and had no problems. now that i'm trying to convert an existing courier-imap configuration to dovecot and all the various parts work together (e.g. mail delivery and dovecot sasl), i cannot get the folder subscription issue sorted. the machine is running netbsd 4.1 + postfix 2.5.1 + dovecot 1.0.13. searching for a bit yields the following useful links http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration/Courier http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration http://marc.info/?l=dovecot&m=120592911416484&w=2 i have downloaded and run the courier-dovecot-migrate.pl script and that does not do the trick, nor does following it up with the suggested changes in the private namespace. an example of one of the maildirs i have at hand is mail# ls -al total 1580 drwx------ 71 vmail users 2560 Jun 27 13:47 . drwx------ 24 vmail users 512 May 28 14:10 .. drwx------ 6 vmail users 512 Jun 27 12:10 .Drafts drwx------ 5 vmail users 512 Jun 27 13:17 .INBOX.Trash drwx------ 6 vmail users 512 Jun 27 12:45 .RT drwx------ 6 vmail users 512 Jun 27 12:50 .Sent drwx------ 6 vmail users 512 Jun 27 12:46 .Trash drwx------ 6 vmail users 512 Jun 27 12:45 .Trash.bro drwx------ 6 vmail users 512 Jun 27 12:45 .associates .... and the subscriptions file, after courier-dovecot-migrate.pl runs is Trash Sent Drafts associates .... based on the folder subscriptions, i have attempted to move the folders preceded by a '.' to the same name without a '.'. this does not fix the problem either. any clues on how to fix this issue would be welcome. cheers, jake

[Dovecot] Poor pop3 over nfs performance
by Mark Zealey 01 Jul '08

01 Jul '08

Hi, About a week ago I upgraded our reasonably heavily loaded mail servers from a pretty recent courier version to dovecot-1.1rc10. IMAP performance on dovecot is amazing, however POP3 performance is worse than courier :-( I have uploaded some munin graphs taken today to http://linweb.atlas.pipex.net/dovecot/; the dovecot server is handling about 2000 pop logins/sec and 300 imap sessions (but these are negligible in terms of nfs ops). The courier server is handling a similar number of pop logins/sec but no imap (slightly less traffic overall but a similar number of logins). As you can see, dovecot seems to issue an awful lot more read requests than courier. The big spike at 10am is where I tried setting the :INDEX=MEMORY flag on dovecot as I assumed that's what courier is doing. I've also attached graphs of the relative network usage - as you can see, dovecot is using up to 100mbps whereas courier is using less than 10mbps; I believe this is due to the read. I initially assumed this high read load was due to courier building up its index files, but this has now been happening for about a week with little variation. The servers are both centos 5.0 (perhaps 5.1 actually, but with the latest centosplus kernel which fixes the nfs lookup bug in the standard kernels); and are not running any other nfs programs. The NFS server is a high performance NAS unit - no issues there. We're only using Maildirs; relevant config options are: mmap_disable: yes dotlock_use_excl: no mail_nfs_storage: yes mail_nfs_index: yes lock_method: dotlock maildir_copy_preserve_filename: yes Thanks, Mark

[Dovecot] Maildir and Invalid data in file
by Patryk 01 Jul '08

01 Jul '08

Hi Timo, Regarding our conversation in IRC, I'm attaching the uidlist and copying in the original message just in case. I'm using dovecot version 1.0.13 on reiserfs on hardware RAID-0, but I'm getting the following error in the logs every time one user tries to access his old mails in the .Sent directory: dovecot: 2008-06-23 15:09:46 Error: IMAP(marek.chajecki): Invalid data in file /var/mail/Maildir/marek.chajecki/.Sent/dovecot-uidlist As a result he fails to get access to the emails in this folder. I've googled a bit and read that deleting the uidlist makes dovecot recreate it, but after some time the same thing happens. It's a new hard drive, so I don't think this is a hard drive fault. Some additional info: this server is being used by about 200 users who get about 100 emails daily each one of them. Config: root@warsaw Maildir # dovecot -n # 1.0.13: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf log_path: /var/log/dovecot.log info_log_path: /var/log/dovecot.log log_timestamp: %Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S ssl_listen: * login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login login_executable: /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap-login login_process_per_connection: no login_processes_count: 15 login_max_processes_count: 512 max_mail_processes: 4096 mail_privileged_group: mail mail_location: maildir:/var/mail/Maildir/%u maildir_copy_with_hardlinks: yes auth default: worker_max_count: 100 passdb: driver: pam args: cache_key=%u dovecot userdb: driver: passwd Any help will be appreciated! -- Regards, Patryk Rzadzinski

[Dovecot] Dovecot + Postfix for Squirrel Webmail??
by Marcos Cabrera Goñi 01 Jul '08

Hi, I would like to use Dovecot as IMAP Server in order to Develope a Squirrel Webmail. I have a problem with the Dovecot configuration; I have my Postfix server in the host: 192.168.100.100, and I have installed Dovecot in the host: 192.168.1.253. Everything goes right, but I can't see any mail that I had received in my mailbox. How can I configure the dovecot.conf in order to use an mbox placed in a different host?? Thanks. [Dovecot] [Fwd: Re: University of Washington lays off 66 technology workers.]

I would expect this means the end of UWIMAP....which probably leaves DC as open-source IMAP of choice. There were 66 people doing IMAP and Pine/Alpine development that were laid off at UWash due to funding cuts; Mark Crispin, one of the fathers of IMAP, was among those laid off. From the keyboard of: James Morris Lead Engineer, UW Technology University of Washington ================================================================================= Here's the official text on the status of Alpine and UW imapd development for those that were asking: --- Here is what we know about our future plans for development of Alpine and UW IMAPd products. We are committed to completing our work on a new Web Alpine user interface and a corresponding release of Alpine and UW IMAPd. After this next release, which is anticipated later this summer, we'll continue assessing any future development plans and resources we can allocate to this effort. [Dovecot] Global FTS index?
by Patrick Nagel 30 Jun '08

30 Jun '08

Hi, I tried the FTS (and FTS Squat) plugin today, and it works as advertised. But: On my 13000 folders with 160000 mails maildir I use for testing, the speed increase is not as big as one would wish (it still takes several minutes to complete a search). Is my assumption correct, that there is no way to do a search over a big IMAP folder hierarchy in a reasonable amount of time, because each folder has to be 'selected', and only one folder can be selected at once? [Dovecot] Quota Check: fs with multiple "noenforcing" mount point
by Grandy Fu 30 Jun '08

30 Jun '08

Hi, It seems my previous mail has been lost, I apologize if this is a duplicate. I am using Dovecot 1.1.1 with user's INBOX in /var/mail and other folders in their home directories. I have setup file system quota on /var/mail to limit their usage. I would like dovecot to display such information in IMAP client and ignore all others. OS: Solaris 10 Dovecot version : 1.1.1 file system of /var/mail : NFS from Solaris file system of /home : other NFS server that not support rquotad. Here is my setting that works: ---------------------------- plugin { quota = fs:INBOX:mount=/var/mail quota2 = fs:home:noenforcing:mount=/home/h1 } ------------------------------------------ Unfortunately, I have many different mount points for different users, so I changed my settings to: --------------------------- plugin { quota = fs:INBOX:mount=/var/mail quota2 = fs:home:noenforcing:mount=/home/h1 quota3 = fs:home:noenforcing:mount=/home/h2 quota4 = fs:home:noenforcing:mount=/home/h3 } ---------------------------------------------- The result is... Devocolt is not able to get quota information anymore. Any suggestions?

Hello. I'm reading http://wiki.dovecot.org/Quota/1.1 one last time before my upgrade, and I have a question about quota_warning option. Which type of script must we use for this example: quota_warning = storage=95%% /usr/local/bin/quota-warning.sh 95 What the script must doing? It sends an email? It deletes some emails? [Dovecot] Dovecot corrupted index cache
by Michael D. Godfrey 28 Jun '08

28 Jun '08

System: Linux 2.6.25.6-55.fc9.x86_64 #1 SMP Tue Jun 10 16:05:21 EDT 2008 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Dovecot: dovecot-1.0.14-8.fc9.x86_64 We have used Dovecot for several years. The error message below appears in the system log quite frequently. I have run a test which shows that this message is due to 2 or more users accessing the same mail (i.e connecting using the same userid). This happens for various reasons including the fact that some users have their client machine set up (typically using Thunderbird) with more than one account within a single Thunderbird configuration. Thus, more than one person may be reading or sending mail from a single Dovecot account. The Dovecot error is: Dovecot disconnects: Inactivity: 13 Time(s) Logged out: 2 Time(s) in IDLE: 12 Time(s) **Unmatched Entries** dovecot: IMAP(godfrey): Connection closed: 4 Time(s) dovecot: IMAP(godfrey): Corrupted index cache file /home/godfrey/Maildir/dovecot.index.cache: invalid record size: 1 Time(s) dovecot: IMAP(igodfrey): Connection closed: 4 Time(s) =============== or: Dovecot disconnects: Inactivity: 23 Time(s) Logged out: 1 Time(s) in IDLE: 6 Time(s) **Unmatched Entries** dovecot: IMAP(godfrey): Connection closed: 8 Time(s) dovecot: IMAP(godfrey): Corrupted index cache file /home/godfrey/Maildir/.Sent/dovecot.index.cache: invalid record size: 1 Time(s) dovecot: IMAP(godfrey): Corrupted index cache file /home/godfrey/Maildir/dovecot.index.cache: invalid record size: 1 Time(s) dovecot: IMAP(igodfrey): Connection closed: 6 Time(s) ---------------------- Dovecot End ------------------------- ========================================================= These errors do not seem to cause any serious problem, but it would be good if the problem could be fixed. I have seen other "corrupted" error reports in the mail archive, but they did not seem to be exactly like this one.

[Dovecot] Dovecot index, NFS, and multiple architectures
by David Halik 28 Jun '08

28 Jun '08

Hi all, I crawled through the archives for a bit but didn't see anything helpful, so I apologize if this has already been addressed. We've been dying to move from Courier to Dovecot across our whole infrastructure for quite some time, but until recently our setup wasn't possible until this happened: "Dovecot allows mailboxes and their indexes to be modified by multiple computers at the same time, while still performing well. This means that Dovecot works with NFS and clustered filesystems." Now that NFS is officially supported, we figured why not make the switch. All of our mail touches NFS in some way, so we need to check on the stability before completely migrating. In test trials we're having issues with the NFS'd index becoming corrupted. Here's the setup: * Linux workstations running Fedora 8/9 i386 and a locally called Dovecot 1.0.14 * NFS'd homedir with Maildir setup * NFS is on Solaris 9 sparcv9 (64bit) running Dovecot 1.0.14 Now this setup is just a test example and not exactly what we'll be running in production, but it tipped up the problem either way. Since the index is shared by both the Linux i386 machine and the sparc64 Solaris machine, if mail is accessed from both, lets say with Pine for example, the index becomes corrupted and breaks. As long as only one architecture only ever touches it there are no issues. I'm assuming this is an endian issue, which would make the most sense. Is there a way around this with flags or server options? Is this something that has maybe been addressed in 1.1.0? Unfortunately, we are not going to be able to move to Dovecot across all of our systems until this is no longer an issue. We run a lot of mixed environments that have everything from Linux i386/x86_64 to Solaris 9 64 to Windows. If a user accesses IMAP from a Windows box, then logs into the front end which is a Linux x86_64 box and runs Pine, and all of this is on a Solaris sparc NFS system, we're going to have serious issues with the index. ;) Any help would be appreciated. [Dovecot] Keeping \Seen flag private
by Imobach González Sosa 28 Jun '08

28 Jun '08

Hi all, I wanna to set up shared folders for a couple of users and I'd like that everyone could keep the \Seen flag as private. So if user #1 reads some messages and user #2 not, those messages appear as "unseen" to #2 and "seen" to #1. I've implemented shared folders using namespaces with every user having their own "control" and "private" directories. But all the flags (\Seen included) are "shared". Am I on the right path? Some tip or documentation? Oh, I almost forgot: using dovecot 1.0.13 (from Debian Etch backports). Thank you in advance! -- Imobach González Sosa Banot.net http://www.banot.net/

[Dovecot] managesieve server aware?
by Cassidy Larson 28 Jun '08

28 Jun '08

Just upgraded to Dovecot 1.1 and thought I'd try out managesieve plugin. My situation is I have two front end proxy boxes and four storage nodes in the back. I have been able to load the managesieve plugin just like I should on the storage nodes, but not on the proxy boxes. My proxy boxes have multiple server sections to deal with unique configurations for 5-7 different mail domains: server mail.host1.com { listen a.b.c.d protocols = imap imaps pop3 pop3s ..... } server mail.host2.com { listen a.b.c.e protocols = imap pop3 .... } If I add the managesieve to the protocols line like I do on my storage nodes, I get this: Error: Can't access mail module directory: /usr/local/lib/dovecot/managesieve: No such file or directory Funny thing is /usr/local/lib/dovecot/managesieve does not exist on the the proxy boxes. It also does not exist on the storage boxes where managesieve loaded just fine. Anybody have any ideas or suggestions? -c

[Dovecot] Problem Compiling 1.1.1 on AIX
by Jackie Hunt 27 Jun '08

27 Jun '08

Hi all, We've been running Dovecot since December '07 with with no glitches. It's a great solid piece of software, thanks so much Timo!! I thought I'd try out 1.1.1, so I brought it down and tried compiling it on AIX, using the IBM compiler, xlc. It's what I've used all along. The error I'm seeing on the make is: source='array.c' object='array.o' libtool=no DEPDIR=.deps depmode=aix / bin/sh ../../depcomp xlc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I../.. -I/usr/local/openssl_0. 9.7e/include -g -qcpluscmt -c array.c "macros.h", line 149.68: 1506-211 (S) Parameter list must be empty, or consist o f one or more identifiers separated by commas. make: 1254-004 The error code from the last command is 1. Looking at macros.h, the section it is erroring on is: #ifdef CONTEXT_TYPE_SAFETY # define CONTEXT_CALLBACK(name, callback_type, callback, context, ...) \ ({(void)(1 ? 0 : callback(context)); \ name(__VA_ARGS__, (callback_type *)callback, context); }) #else # define CONTEXT_CALLBACK(name, callback_type, callback, context, ...) \ name(__VA_ARGS__, (callback_type *)callback, context) #endif The second define is the line the error occurs on. Has anyone seen this before. I'm assuming xlc can't handle the '...' parameter, and an hoping there is an option I can enable. Just thought I might see if anyone else has already solved this issue. Thanks much! Jackie ---- Jackie Hunt ACNS Colorado State University Fort Collins, CO 80523

[Dovecot] maildirmake -q quota equivalent to set quota
by Eric PEYREMORTE 26 Jun '08

26 Jun '08

Hi, I'm coming from courier-imap and i'm trying to migrate to dovecot. I can't find how to create a maildir with a quota file(maildirsize) I saw that if there was a maildirsize it would get its quota from there but can't find how to create that file. I'm using pam auth and would like to set different quotas for each users. With courier-imap there is a useful command : maildirmake -q 100000S Maildir/ to assign a quota to a maildir. But i don't know how to do with dovecot... Cheers, Erc PEYREMORTE

[Dovecot] local rimapd not working with 1.1.1, fatal error
by David Halik 25 Jun '08

25 Jun '08

Hi all, I just upgraded a couple of Fedora 9 workstations to try out 1.1.1 over NFS'd homedir's and I'm having trouble running dovecot in the same configuration we were with 1.0.14. It's fairly simple, we use pine/alpine and set a couple of variables to fork rimapd directly: * smtp-server=host (for the main mail machine) * user-domain=host (same) * set the inbox-path={localhost}INBOX * ssh-command=%s %s %s %s * ssh-path=/etc/rimapd In rimapd we specifiy: exec /usr/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail imap 2>/dev/null In dovecot.conf we specify: protocols = imap listen = localhost mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir:INDEX=<path>/index/%u:CONTROL=<path>/control/%u namespace public { separator = . prefix = INBOX. inbox = yes } protocol imap { mail_executable = /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap mail_plugins = quota imap_quota } ...and away we go. This enables us to run pine and dovecot locally on the workstations since our home directories are all NFS'd to a central server, essentially giving us Maildir access anywhere local. This has been working great for a long time, and we still use it with 1.0.14, but as soon as I upgraded to 1.1.1, pine is telling me: "rsh to IMAP server timed out" "localhost,143: Connection refused" I know this is very pine specific, but our pine configuration hasn't changed, only dovecot has. I check the obvious answers like perms, and ensured the same dovecot conf exists, and it does. I'm pretty stumped. It's obviously the newer dovecot causing problems, but I don't know where exactly. If I run "/usr/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail imap" manually, i still get the normal IMAP session. The only error I see anywhere is this in /var/log/maillog: Jun 24 15:36:28 host IMAP(user): : Fatal: io_loop_handle_add: epoll_ctl(1, 2): Operation not permitted That doesn't really tell me much though. Any ideas? Is dovecot taking different arguments now so my rimapd line isn't working properly? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. -- ================================ David Halik System Administrator OIT-CSS Rutgers University dhalik(a)jla.rutgers.edu ================================

[Dovecot] Migrate courierimapsubscribed to subscriptions
by Alessio Cecchi 25 Jun '08

25 Jun '08

Hi here's a little trick to migrate from courierimapsubscribed to subscriptions: create a file /usr/local/bin/courier-dovecot-subscribe-migrate like this: #!/bin/sh # WARNING: Be sure to use mail_drop_priv_before_exec=yes, # otherwise the files are created as root! if [ -e ~/Maildir/courierimapsubscribed ] then cat ~/Maildir/courierimapsubscribed | sed -e 's/INBOX\.//' > ~/Maildir/subscriptions mv ~/Maildir/courierimapsubscribed ~/Maildir/courierimapsubscribed-VIA fi # This is for imap, create a similar script for pop3 too exec /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap remember to chmod 755 /usr/local/bin/courier-dovecot-subscribe-migrate after in your dovecot.conf add: mail_drop_priv_before_exec=yes mail_executable=/usr/local/bin/courier-dovecot-subscribe-migrate reload dovecot and now on the first IMAP login (like via webmail) your subscriptions folders will be migrate to dovecot format. [Dovecot] Maildir and Invalid data in file
by Patryk 25 Jun '08

Hello, I'm using dovecot version 1.0.13 on reiserfs on hardware RAID-0, but I'm getting the following error in the logs every time one user tries to access his old mails in the .Sent directory: dovecot: 2008-06-23 15:09:46 Error: IMAP(marek.chajecki): Invalid data in file /var/mail/Maildir/marek.chajecki/.Sent/dovecot-uidlist As a result he fails to get access to the emails in this folder. [Dovecot] Limiting SSL (external) access to certain users ?

[Dovecot] 1 week after full migration to 1.1v
by Raphael Bittencourt S. Costa 24 Jun '08

24 Jun '08

Ehlo all, I've been working on a migration of about 240K users from one server with qmail, courier imap, maildrop and ldap to postfix, dovecot, lda +sieve. Before the migration the server and the storage were always on high load. Before migration: Storage IOPs = 4600 Read average = 2800 Write average = 1800 Storage CPU (Raid5) Crl0 = 50% Crl1 = 50% Server Load = 120 %user = 35 %system = 60 %iowait = 5 %idle = 0 After migration: Storage IOPs = 3000 Read average = 1200 Write average = 1800 Storage CPU (Raid5) Crl0 = 40% Crl1 = 40% Server Load = 25 %user = 10 %system = 27 %iowait = 40 %idle = 23 And now the server responds so quickly to any imap command. Dovecot is now the default imap/pop server here, Thanks Timo. []s, Raphael Costa

[Dovecot] v1.0.13: maildirfolder not being created
by Eduardo M KALINOWSKI 23 Jun '08

23 Jun '08

Hi, I'm using version 1.0.13 of dovecot. I know it's somewhat dated, but that's the latest that Debian etch offers, and I would like to avoid compiling by myself if possible. dovecot is not creating the 'maildirfolder' in folders that are created via IMAP. Looking at the NEWS file, this was implemented in v1.0.rc7, so my version should have that working already. Is there anything else that needs to be done? Here's dovecot -n: # 1.0.13: /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf log_path: /var/log/dovecot/main.log info_log_path: /var/log/dovecot/info.log log_timestamp: %Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S ssl_cert_file: /etc/ssl/certs/server.pem ssl_key_file: /etc/ssl/private/server.pem login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login login_executable: /usr/lib/dovecot/imap-login login_processes_count: 1 first_valid_uid: 100 mail_privileged_group: mail mail_location: maildir:/home/vmail/%d/%n/INBOX:INDEX=/home/vmail/%d/%n/dovecotidx mail_plugins: quota imap_quota auth default: mechanisms: plain login cram-md5 passdb: driver: passwd-file args: /home/vmail/%d/db/passwd passdb: driver: pam userdb: driver: static args: uid=104 gid=8 home=/home/vmail/%d/%n userdb: driver: passwd socket: type: listen client: path: /var/run/dovecot/auth-client mode: 438 plugin: quota: maildir:ignore=Trash -- I want the presidency so bad I can already taste the hors d'oeuvres. [Dovecot] Testing using namespaces

Hey there, I'm interested in testing out using different storage formats for different folder hierarchies. I *think* this can be achieved using namespaces, but I'm not sure. For example, is it possible to, say, make all directories under INBOX.Archive be stored as mboxes, while everything else is stored as Maildirs? ~Kyle -- May your glass be ever full. [Dovecot] no maildirsize file being created -dovecot v1.1
by Barry R Cisna 22 Jun '08

22 Jun '08

Hi Timo, Thanks for the info. You are exactly right ,,after I done some researching. by default the Fedora and El distros setups up mail folders in mbox format. My Bad. I was always under the impression default was maildir.I have used sendmail>Procmail>dovecot>squirrelmail for my new setup same as the last email server setup.I found that sendmail seems to be much less CPU intensive than postfix,or I did not have the config correctly as postfix was easy to setup but really choked our email server when a secretary " bulk emailed" everyone in the school district. I have learned a lot about this in the last couple days. I thought I knew a little bit about this, but obviously I didn't know a thing. I am going to go with the default dovecot rpm that ships with EL5 1.0.1x as this does what all I need to have done. My main concern is the check_quota plugin available for Squirrelmail works, and with the dirsize quota directive put into dovecot.conf this is working very slick, and appears to be reporting very accurately. Now hopefully some teachers will not end up with 1GB mail folders!! and complaining the mail server is so slow when they check their email via Squirrelmail at home! Thanks again for steering me straight! Take Care, Barry Cisna

[Dovecot] Cygwin and dovecot-auth problems

Hi all. I'm trying to install Dovecot 1.1.rc13 on Cygwin. I've read the related posts, and I realize that maybe there's no solution at present; since I'm having a different error, though, I'm posting it here. Compilation succeeds. Starting dovecot from command line results in: Warning: fd limit 256 is lower than what Dovecot can use under full load (more than 640). Either grow the limit or change login_max_processes_count and max_mail_processes settings Warning: Last died with error (see error log for more information): Auth process died too early - shutting down Trying to run just dovecot-auth outputs: dovecot-auth: Fatal: MECHANISMS environment is unset Now, if I try to set an environment variable called MECHANISMS (say, export MECHANISMS=plain) I get a different error: dovecot-auth: Fatal: No passdbs specified in configuration file. [Dovecot] Using sork-passwd from Horde to change dovecot password
by Eduardo M KALINOWSKI 22 Jun '08

22 Jun '08

I'm using in my server dovecot and Horde to provide IMAP and Webmail for virtual users. Their password are stored in a passwd file, since the setup is quite simple and small. I'd like to use the Horde module sork-passwd to allow changing of the passwords. Apparently, this can be done for the case of passwd file by using an expect script, or simply calling a program that receives the data. It should not be hard to write a Perl (or Python, or whatever) script that does that. I'm just asking if someone has already done that and is willing to share the solution.

[Dovecot] no maildirsize file being created -dovecot v1.1
by Barry R Cisna 21 Jun '08

21 Jun '08

Hi Timo, I changed the maildir directive in my dovecot.conf as you suggested. The maildirsize file IS created now , but, the ~/mail folder structure is now showing all messed up for the user that logs into Squirrelmail for example: Before the mail_location was changed; ~/mail/Drafts,Sent,Trash,.subsciptions/.imap/Drafts,INBOX,Sent,Trash After, mail_location = maildir:~/mail ~/mail/cur/new/tmp/.Drafts,.Sent,.Trash,dovecot.index.log,subsciptions,maildirsize/.imap/Drafts/INBOX/Sent/Trash Notice how after the maildir directive change there are .DOT in front of Drafts,Sent,Trash as well as no .DOT in front of subsciptions,as well as the added cur, new, tmp directories under the ~/mail folder?? And yes this is the default EL5 install with maildir storage( not mbox). As I stated earlier, if i simply 'rpm -e dovecot' them 'rpm -ivh dovecot' with the default install of the dovecot rpm that shipps with EL5 everything comes up correctly as far as quotas for dovecot, Squirrelmail, etc. I think I may just stick with the default dovecot1.0.1.2-rc15.el rpm that ships with EL5 for now. I'm afraid of other underlying problems i may find as I we start using dovecot v1.1 when school starts then I will be in trouble! Another sidenote: After installing dovecot1.1 rpm dovecot appears to start fine with no errors,,but it is not actually listening on port 143 by doing an nmap localhost. I had to change listen = [::] to listen = * then restart dovecot, then dovecot was listening on port 143 as it should. Thanks for the help, Barry Cisna

It looks to me after setting the mail_debug=yes in the dovecot.conf quota is looking for the maildir to be Maildir >>(/home/superuser/Maildir, rwx). my install has mailboxes listed as mail>> /home/superuser/mail ( not Maildir) How do i comment the quota to make a directive to correct this? maildir=mail >>not mail=Maildir Jun 20 21:35:05 hi3 dovecot: IMAP(superuser): Loading modules from directory: /usr/lib/dovecot/imap Jun 20 21:35:05 hi3 dovecot: IMAP(superuser): Module loaded: /usr/lib/dovecot/imap/lib10_quota_plugin.so Jun 20 21:35:05 hi3 dovecot: IMAP(superuser): Module loaded: /usr/lib/dovecot/imap/lib11_imap_quota_plugin.so Jun 20 21:35:05 hi3 dovecot: IMAP(superuser): Effective uid=500, gid=500, home=/home/superuser Jun 20 21:35:05 hi3 dovecot: IMAP(superuser): Quota root: name= backend=maildir args= Jun 20 21:35:05 hi3 dovecot: IMAP(superuser): Quota rule: root= mailbox=* bytes=104857600 (0%) messages=0 (0%) Jun 20 21:35:05 hi3 dovecot: IMAP(superuser): Quota rule: root= mailbox=Trash bytes=10485760 (10%) messages=0 (0%) Jun 20 21:35:05 hi3 dovecot: IMAP(superuser): Quota rule: root= mailbox=Spam bytes=20971520 (20%) messages=0 (0%) Jun 20 21:35:05 hi3 dovecot: IMAP(superuser): maildir: access(/home/superuser/Maildir, rwx): failed: No such file or directory Jun 20 21:35:05 hi3 dovecot: IMAP(superuser): maildir: couldn't find root dir Jun 20 21:35:05 hi3 dovecot: IMAP(superuser): maildir: Couldn't create mail storage : Root mail directory not given Jun 20 21:35:05 hi3 dovecot: IMAP(superuser): mbox: root exists (/home/superuser/mail) Jun 20 21:35:05 hi3 dovecot: IMAP(superuser): mbox: INBOX exists (/var/mail/superuser) Jun 20 21:35:05 hi3 dovecot: imap-login: Login: user=<superuser>, method=PLAIN, rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured Jun 20 21:35:05 hi3 dovecot: IMAP(superuser): fs: root=/home/superuser/mail, index=, control=, inbox=/var/mail/superuser Jun 20 21:35:05 hi3 dovecot: IMAP(superuser): quota maildir: No maildir storages, ignoring quota. [Dovecot] no maildirsize file being created -dovecot v1.1
by Barry R Cisna 21 Jun '08

Hello List, Getting ready to setup a new dovecot sendmail squirrelmail server for our school which is currently running on a 4 year old install of the same, which has worked like a champ by the way. --------------------- EL5 dovecot-1.1 rc10 rpm sendmail squirrelmail --------------------- Problem: I can not get my dovecot 1.1 rc10(rpm) to generate an maildirsize file in each of the users homedir. I have re-edited the dovecot.conf file many many times but still no joy. If I uninstall and install the default dovecot 1.0.1x rpm that ships with EL5 i get the maildirsize file to generate correctly without a hitch. I am wanting to use the check_quota plugin for SM this time so I need to get this functioning correctly. How would I go about troubleshooting this. The only error I get in maillog is when I log into SM I do see were dovecot tries to check for the maildirsize file but it can not find it of course and then says " skipping quota check",,so I think I have my dovecot.conf file setup correctly. Dovecot is simply not generating the maildirsize file. Following lines added to the end of dovecot.conf file: protocol imap { mail_plugins = quota imap_quota } protocol pop3 { mail_plugins = quota } # In case you're using deliver: protocol lda { mail_plugins = quota } plugin { quota = maildir quota_rule = *:storage=1GB # 10% of 1GB = 100MB quota_rule2 = Trash:storage=10%% # 20% of 1GB = 200MB quota_rule3 = Spam:storage=20%% } ,,I have reversed the above to have quota=maildir,,etc above the protocol directives as well and still no joy. Sidenote: I also tried dovecot v1.1 rc5 rpm as well with the same results. Any tips from anyone would be appreciated. Thanks, Barry Cisna

[Dovecot] Random quirks in 1.1-rc11
by Marc Perkel 21 Jun '08

21 Jun '08

OK - I wish I had more details but I'm using rc11 for the server and Thunderbird for the client. I'm using Maildir and I'm doing server side folder delivery using Exim. On server side folders I'm seeing the count of messages in a folder showing 22 unread messages but the messages themselves don't show up. I deleted the index files and it still didn't show up. But then I restarted dovecot and now the messages in that folder are there. I've noticed similar behavior randomly ever since I upgraded to 1.1. The 1.0 never had this problem. Wish I had more details to post.

[Dovecot] Quota warning question
by Torsten Krah 20 Jun '08

20 Jun '08

Hi. Read the example conf and doku about the quota warning stuff, but how might such a "sh" file may look? If i want to sent a mail to the user, how to get the mail address? Wheres the glue between the "sh" file and the percentage given and the user? thx for hints Torsten -- Bitte senden Sie mir keine Word- oder PowerPoint-Anhänge. [Dovecot] v1.2 development tree started
by Timo Sirainen 20 Jun '08

20 Jun '08

I merged all the new features and latest v1.1 changes under one tree: http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.2/ The changeset order is kind of weird though. The timestamps jump all around. Wonder if there's a way to reorder them so that it looks more sane.. The status of the new features: 1. CONDSTORE extension is probably the largest change. It adds new "modification sequences" for messages that increase whenever the message's metadata changes. I'll probably have to reimplement the way modseqs are calculated, because modseqs will be very useful when implementing replication and the current way just doesn't work with it. If modseq-supporting clients see the current modseqs and later the server gets upgraded to new modseqs, the clients will most likely break. So this change should be done for v1.2. 2. QRESYNC, ESEARCH, SEARCHRES and WITHIN extensions are fully implemented. QRESYNC might need some cleanups and optimizations though. 3. CONTEXT=SEARCH extension is fully implemented, but could use a few optimizations (caching PARTIAL and CONTEXT searches, maybe others too). 4. Virtual mailboxes should work fast after mailbox is opened. The initial opening could use several optimizations though. It could probably share some code with QRESYNC to avoid the full initial search (storing each backend's modseq to index header). Also if search parameters don't contain any dynamically changing data, there's no point in searching the old messages. The current design doesn't allow changing the search parameters or list of mailboxes, otherwise it breaks more or less badly. I guess I could add code to check if the dovecot-virtual file's mtime has changed and if so make it do a full resync. This anyway means that there's no way to support wildcard mailbox names (e.g. "all mailboxes"). But does anyone really want that (yet)? It'll anyway be faster/easier to implement once mailbox list indexes are implemented. I'll still have to add a new X-MAILBOX search parameter which can be used to test what the backend mailbox name is. This will be especially useful with INTHREAD extension. I guess it wouldn't hurt to have FETCH X-MAILBOX if someone wants it. 5. Thread indexes should work, but some optimizations missing and there are some small bugs left. X-REFERENCES2 thread algorithm works. 6. INTHREAD extension isn't started yet, but I'll start it soon. Hopefully won't be too tricky to get it working with virtual mailboxes and CONTEXT=SEARCH..

[Dovecot] sig11 in 1.1rc5 fts
by Adam McDougall 20 Jun '08

20 Jun '08

This happened from one user near noon on the 17th and 19th (today) of this month. From the backtrace it looks like they were searching, but I won't know for sure unless I need to ask them. Is this possibly fixed already? I just haven't upgraded dovecot in a while due to lack of problems. The sig11 happened a few dozen times, a few seconds apart each day. I have one coredump from each day, and the size was the same. This is a trace from only one. The other backtrace looks pretty much the same. Hello. I see dovecot 1.1 will be release very soon. I'm thinking about a migration from my 1.0.14. The migration job will be hard/long? I see in http://wiki.dovecot.org/Upgrading/1.1 that dovecot-uidlist file are in a new format. It will be problem for Courier (pop/imap) upgrades? (today, I often upgrade old mailboxes in Courier to my Dovecot server). Best regards, -- - Nicolas.

[Dovecot] Using checkpassword to block ips?
by Larry Ludwig 19 Jun '08

19 Jun '08

Hi new to the list, but we are a long time user of Dovecot via DirectAdmin control panel. We, like everyone else, are seeing an increase in dictionary attacks of POP/IMAP. We want to block them. I've searched the mailing list and found a few recommended fail2ban, which really won't work for our case. We need to do this over many machines and not one or two. We also like to gather info at the network wide level. Hackers know about attacking specific server/ips too often and we've seen much more distributed attacks that go under the radar of one server monitoring setup. We've designed our own system and use a local RBL to distribute the blocked IPs. For ftp and ssh attacks it's worked very well. We would like to use the RBL to do the same with dovecot. >From my research it appears the best way to do this (and only currently) is with the checkpassword option. I haven't gotten it to work yet. We have: passdb checkpassword { args = /usr/local/bin/checkpassword deny = yes } As the first auth.. This should reject the connection if the IP matches. checkpassword can see TCPREMOTEIP enviornmental variable. In the checkpassword script we have: #!/usr/bin/perl sub read_uinfo { my($user,$passwd,$apop_ts); open X,"<&=3" or exit 111; $_ = <X>; # ugly; should use sysread instead ($user,$passwd,$apop_ts) = /^(.*)\0(.*)\0(.*)\0/; while (<X>) {}; close X; return ($user,$passwd,$apop_ts); } ($user,$passwd,$apop_ts)=$debug?(shift,shift,shift):read_uinfo; $ipaddr=$ENV{TCPREMOTEIP}; $result=system("/usr/sbin/checkdnsbl $ipaddr"); if ( $result == 0) { @ENV{"SHELL","USER","HOME"} = ($shell,$user,$home); exit 0; } else { exit 1; } My questions are as follows: - Can the deny = yes be used with checkpassword? - What am I doing wrong with the script? It should reject only the connections that are in the RBL. It blocks all -L -- Larry Ludwig Empowering Media 1-866-792-0489 x600 Managed and Unmanaged Xen VPSes http://www.hostcube.com/

[Dovecot] quote-warning details

Hello, I have some questions on how quota-warning is supposed to work. -Does it keep a state, so that it doesn't send the same warning several times? Or should the script itself do something to remember it already sent a warning? -When exactly does it run? Does it run when deliver runs? Or only when the user accesses it's mailbox? Thanks, Alexander

[Dovecot] dovecot as gmail imap proxy
by Farkas Levente 18 Jun '08

18 Jun '08

hi, may be this is a bit of topic, but i hope not. it's always a big question which is the better to choose a hosting provider to keep and manage you mail or setup your own mail server, hosting, virus and spam filter etc.. now as more and more people and company move to gmail or google apps mail service it seems google can't handle the load and it's getting more and more slower. what's more not just the imap interface but nowadays the web interface used to be hang or even stop working. it's getting more and more annoying that the speed is worst than in a 10 years ago. i thing about how can this be solved without totally give up gmail as a mail service provider (and may be they can solve it in a few months/years:-). would it be possible to create a dovecot server as an imap proxy for gmail and google apps? imho many people/company would be love to use such a setup where he can use gmail in vacation or any other time, but when the email is real critical apps (not acceptable to wait 1 minutes for an email to load or to open a folder/label) than he can use a proxy server eg. dovecot which act as a imap proxy to gmail and can be hosted on closer, faster server and this speed problem never happend. what's more it can be used as a mail backup server too. anybody has any such setup, idea? would it be possible with dovecot. any other suggestion? yours. -- Levente "Si vis pacem para bellum!"

[Dovecot] don't follow symlinks when creating mailbox list
by Dan Horák 18 Jun '08

18 Jun '08

Hi, this issue was discussed here twice in the not so far history (http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2008-January/028317.html, http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2008-February/029147.html) but I need to open it again as it makes problems for our users on one side and on the other side we don't want to diverge from the upstream sources in our packages. I agree with Timo that simply disabling the symlink following in creating the mailbox list can give a false sense of security so the question is whether a permanent solution can be developed and how it should look like? If I understand this correctly, dovecot is supposed to clean out all deleted/expunged messages from dovecot-uidlist whenever a new message is added to the respective mailbox - right? This doesn't actually seem to be the case at least with dovecot-1.0: [root@airframe]:~# dovecot --version 1.0.14 [root@airframe]:~# [root@airframe]:~# du -h ~user/Maildir/.Trash/dovecot-uidlist 13M /home/user/Maildir/.Trash/dovecot-uidlist [root@airframe]:~# wc -l < ~user/Maildir/.Trash/dovecot-uidlist 289769 [root@airframe]:~# ls -1 ~user/Maildir/.Trash/cur/ | wc -l 14 [root@airframe]:~# [root@airframe]:~# du -h ~user/Maildir/.Logs.System\ Checks/dovecot-uidlist 3,5M /home/user/Maildir/.Logs.System Checks/dovecot-uidlist [root@airframe]:~# wc -l < ~user/Maildir/.Logs.System\ Checks/dovecot-uidlist 85188 [root@airframe]:~# ls -1 ~user/Maildir/.Logs.System\ Checks/cur/ | wc -l 16069 The only mailbox where this seems to work properly is INBOX: [root@airframe]:~# du -h ~user/Maildir/.INBOX/dovecot-uidlist 4,0K /home/user/Maildir/.INBOX/dovecot-uidlist [root@airframe]:~# wc -l < ~user/Maildir/.INBOX/dovecot-uidlist 18 [root@airframe]:~# ls -1 ~user/Maildir/.INBOX/cur/ | wc -l 17 [root@airframe]:~# The server runs sendmail, the LDA is procmail, not dovecot's deliver. http://dovecot.org/releases/1.1/rc/dovecot-1.1.rc10.tar.gz http://dovecot.org/releases/1.1/rc/dovecot-1.1.rc10.tar.gz.sig v1.1.0 will be released on next Friday if nothing horrible happens. * LIST X-STATUS renamed to LIST STATUS and fixed its behavior with LIST-EXTENDED options. It's now compatible with STATUS-IN-LIST draft 00. - Message parsing could have sometimes produced incorrect results, corrupting BODY/BODYSTRUCTURE replies and perhaps others. - SORT: Fixed several bugs - FreeBSD 7.0: Environment clearing wasn't working correctly. This caused "environment corrupted" problems at least with deliver trying to call sendmail and running Dovecot from inetd. - HP-UX: Several fixes to get it to work (by Christian Corti) - Fixes to using expire plugin with SQL dictionary. - dbox fixes

[Dovecot] Mercurial repositories for ManageSieve and Sieve
by Stephan Bosch 17 Jun '08

17 Jun '08

Hello Dovecot users, Recently I was asked to use Mercurial for the ManageSieve development just like Dovecot. As a matter of fact I have been using Mercurial for some time now. Now that I am back from a short and active vacation I am ready to publish my repositories. The repositories are publicly available at: http://hg.rename-it.nl/ The -patch repositories are so-called Mercurial Queues (MQ) repositories. This provides an easy (quilt-like) means to manage patches over an upstream source repository like the one that exists for Dovecot. The patches are managed in a repository called 'patches' below the .hg directory in your main repository. Currently, these MQ repositories only have the managesieve.patch witch is the actual patch I refresh and release each time Timo makes a new Dovecot release. The following command sequence shows how to incorporate the managesieve patch repository in a freshly cloned dovecot-1.1 tree: hg clone http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.1 cd dovecot-1.1 hg clone http://hg.rename-it.nl/dovecot-1.1-managesieve-patch .hg/patches hg qpush When updating the dovecot tree it is important to unapply all patches before performing 'hg pull' on the dovecot tree: hg qpop --all hg pull hg update hg qpush This otherwise results in a multi-head situation which can be resolved using a 'hg rollback' or using 'hg qpop --all' afterwards, which should gracefully clean up the situation (never merge the heads!). Updating the patch repository works as follows: hg qpop --all hg -R .hg/patches pull hg -R .hg/patches update hg qpush After 'hg qpush' the dovecot repository is patched and can be compiled as explained for the normal patch method using the .diff.gz (don't forget ./autogen.sh for compiling dovecot in a mercurial repository). The actual ManageSieve implementation for Dovecot-1.1 is available as a separate package and thus there exists a separate repository for it. Its compilation is no different from the .tar.gz releases, except for the fact that (just like for dovecot) ./autogen.sh needs to be executed before configure. The new (and highly experimental) Sieve implementation is available as the dovecot-libsieve repository. It contains a README file that should explain most of its features and the installation procedure. This is currently still not release-ready and should not be used for any important mail whatsoever. I publish this for people who want to test and play around with it to provide feedback on early bugs and (release-critical) missing features. The TODO and README files provide an overview of my current progress towards a first release. Regards, Stephan.

[Dovecot] quota-warning.sh
by Drew Marshall 17 Jun '08

17 Jun '08

Hi I have just installed Dovecot (Moved from Courier-IMAP) and have just about everything running well thanks to some great docs in the wiki (Thank you to all those who contributed!) however I have not managed to get the quota warnings working yet. I have done much Googling and come back with some oldish posts which help me to understand how the quota warnings work but having looked at all this I have realised I don't have a quota-warning.sh script in /usr/local/bin where the config suggests it ought to be. In fact, I don't have a file by this name any where on the box. I have downloaded both 1.1 source (Which I'm running) and 1.0 and I can't find this anywhere in the sources or the tarball. Could some one tell me where I can find this or am I supposed to make my own? If so is there and example that I can follow? [Dovecot] Caseless folder delivery?
by Jay Levitt 16 Jun '08

16 Jun '08

I'm using exim4 to deliver into dovecot 1.1, and using plus-addressing to deliver mailing lists directly to appropriate folders in my "lists" mailbox. I created a file called /folder-map.lists that looks like ## folder-map.lists dovecot: Dovecot lpedge: Linux PowerEdge ... and so on. So mail to lists-lpedge(a)jay.fm goes to the "Linux PowerEdge" folder. The one annoying thing: I'd like to avoid creating explicit folder-map entries where the plus-address suffix is identical an existing folder name. That *almost* works, but I like to name my folders with appropriate capitalization, and deliver doesn't seem to have a way to do "caseless" delivery. For instance, ideally, I wouldn't have to create the "dovecot: Dovecot" entry; mail to my lists-dovecot(a)jay.fm address would go into the "Dovecot" folder. I can't figure out how to do this. Is there a way to do that using deliver? Could there be? Relevant portions of the exim configuration follow. (And, p.s., am I using the new -a and -m options correctly? Are they used for anything yet?) Jay Levitt ## exim.conf ...begin routers ORIG_FOLDER = ${substr_1:$local_part_suffix} FOLDER_MAP = /etc/exim/folder-map.$local_part MAPPED_FOLDER = ${lookup{ORIG_FOLDER}lsearch{FOLDER_MAP}{$value}{ORIG_FOLDER}} # Mailboxes whose localparts are folders foldered_mailboxes: driver = accept local_part_suffix = +* : -* local_part_suffix_optional local_parts = +foldered_mailboxes address_data = user=$local_part folder="MAPPED_FOLDER" transport = dovecot_virtual_delivery ...begin transports dovecot_virtual_delivery: driver = pipe command = /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver \ -f $return_path \ -a $local_part$local_part_suffix@$domain \ -d ${extract{user}{$address_data}} \ -m "${extract{folder}{$address_data}}" -n message_prefix = message_suffix = log_output return_path_add user = vmail

[Dovecot] Need help configuering Dovecot to support folders that contain sub-folders and messages
by Dan Roberts 14 Jun '08

14 Jun '08

Hi - Last year I set up a new CentOS 5 server and through the install process permitted it to set up dovecot as my IMAP server. ./dovecote --version returns "1.0.rc15" With the system up and running I moved the tar files of my old email accounts over and everything seemed to be just fine. Recently I have upgraded my primary workstation to a Mac Pro - and that of course has it's Mail application. Let me summarize briefly to be sure that I don't omit some minor detail that makes all the difference in the world. Previously I used Netscape 7.2 as my mail client and then went over to Thunderbird on the PC - in either application, under Server Settings / Advanced I had to uncheck the box "Server supports folders that contain sub-folders and messages". Then whenever I attempted to add a new subfolder I would be given a choice - "This server restricts folders to two special kinds. Allow your new folder to contain: [] Folders Only [x] Messages Only". Though perhaps not ideal, this has worked ok up till now. The Leopard Mail application doesn't seem to have this sort of support - it assumes that every folder or subfolder can and should contain both, so all I get are folders that can hold messages. This is a problem as I can't create any new folders to reorganize mail. Though I had thought about resolving this, or at least trying to when I first encountered it - life got busy. So my skills have become a bit rusty and I have not done anything about it. But now I would like to. I ported over my email and my wife's - so perhaps there is some legacy setting in those folders that prevents the bliss of folders and mail in the same subfile. But I created a new email account for my daughter and that has the same limitation. In Leopard mail, folders to hold folders look White, whereas folders to hole mail look blue. In Thunderbird Folders to hold Folders are in Italics whereas Folders to hold mail are normal font. I am also using Webmin to simplify access to the server, but I don't see anything obvious under the dovecot tool for this. The installation was the basic default, so far as I can remember. I have run Yum to update the files and at last review there was nothing outstanding. Regarding my configuration, dovecot -n reports as follows: [root@trailrunner sbin]# ./dovecot --version 1.0.rc15 [root@trailrunner sbin]# ./dovecot -n # /etc/dovecot.conf base_dir: /var/run/dovecot/ protocols: imap imaps listen: disable_plaintext_auth: yes login_dir: /var/run/dovecot//login login_executable: /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap-login mail_extra_groups: mail mail_location: mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u auth default: passdb: driver: pam userdb: driver: passwd [root@trailrunner sbin]# Truly hoping that someone can help me resolve this. While I can use Thunderbird, I do like the Apple Mail feature of seeing the summary of email at the top of the list. Appreciate the help and insights - Cheers Dan

[Dovecot] Need a quick, safe method to empty /home/user/Maildir/{.Junk, .Trash}
by Jeff Kowalczyk 13 Jun '08

13 Jun '08

I have some (Thunderbird client, dovecot-1.0.13, Maildir) users who get an appalling amount of spam-with-attachment, and it's causing backups to take an inordinate amount of time. I'll implement some quota and server-side spam management when I go to dovecot-1.1, but in the meantime: What is the safest way to empty all messages within, but not delete, the following folders from the server command line: /home/user/Maildir/.Junk /home/user/Maildir/.Trash I don't want the Thunderbird-2.0.14 client to report corrupt indexing, or worse not show the folder at next use. Thanks.

[Dovecot] 9GB of messages in /tmp
by Charles Marcus 13 Jun '08

13 Jun '08

Hello, Well, I have a brain-dead user (using Thunderbird 2.0.0.14) who just won't listen when I tell them not to try to move 5000+ messages at one time (or if deleting, bypass the Trash), and they managed to royally screw up their maildirs... I have two problems... 1. The /tmp directory has 9+GB in it... can I just rm tmp/* on that directory without making this problem worse? and 2. One of the directories they were moving now has 5 copies of a whole bunch of messages... I'm very dangerous when it comes to command-line work beyond really basic stuff, and my scripting skills are less than inspiring... Is there a relatively safe command-line way of finding all messages that have more than one instance, and deleting all but the last instance? Tia... -- Best regards, Charles

[Dovecot] "Disable non webmail IMAP access" in vpopmail and Dovecot
by Alessio Cecchi 13 Jun '08

13 Jun '08

Hello, i'm using in my installation qmail+vpopmail and now I have migrated from courier-imap to dovecot. Dovecot is very much faster with large mailbox than courier-imap. But I have a problem. vpopmail has a feature that allows you to "Disable non webmail IMAP access", many webmail using imap as if they were, and they are, a client IMAP. vpopmail give me the ability to disabile IMAP, expect for 127.0.0.1, both for individual users than for single domain. So i can grant IMAP access, from remote client, only for some users but webmail access for all. Here you can read some of my messages in the vpopmail's list: http://www.mail-archive.com/vchkpw@inter7.com/msg25880.html But with dovecot this feature seems not to be compatible. A friend of the vpopmail's list sent me a patch for dovecot but I can not get it to work: >->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->-> Hi Alessio, i spent over 5 hours looking for a solution to this problem and i found one working for me in dovecot sources edit src/auth/passdb-vpopmail.c than add char *remotehost = net_ip2addr(&auth_request->remote_ip); auth_request_log_info(auth_request, "vpopmail", "remote ip is: %s", remotehost); before if (((vpw->pw_gid & NO_IMAP) != 0 && line than modify the condition line to look like: if (((vpw->pw_gid & NO_IMAP) != 0 && strcmp(auth_request->service, "IMAP") == 0 *&& strcmp(remotehost, "127.0.0.1") != 0*) || ((vpw->pw_gid & NO_POP) != 0 && strcmp(auth_request->service, "POP3") == 0)) { auth_request_log_info(auth_request, "vpopmail", "%s disabled", auth_request->service); password = NULL; *result_r = PASSDB_RESULT_USER_DISABLED; } else ............... this way you will preserve webmail access and cut imap from external in case -i limit is defined in vpopmail hope it helps <-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-< Can someone help me in making compatible this useful feature of vpopmail with dovecot? [Dovecot] configure error on HP-UX: C99 compatible vsnprintf() call
by Woonsan Ko 13 Jun '08

13 Jun '08

Hi All, I tried to build dovecot-1.1.rc9 on a HP-UX machine, but failed to configure with the following message: configure: error: You don't appear to have C99 compatible vsnprintf() call The environment is like the following: - command: ./configure - uname: HP-UX B.11.23 U ia64 - aCC version: HP aC++/ANSI C B3910B A.05.55 [Dec 04 2003] Also, I tried to run `./configure CC=c99' and `./configure CC="/opt/aCC/bin/aCC -Ae" also, but the result was the same. I'm not sure, but the HP C compiler does not seem to support C99 fully with vsnprintf() call. Is there any workaround for this problem? TIA, Woonsan

[Dovecot] [Patch] Fix delay on imao-append
by Bruno Prémont 13 Jun '08

13 Jun '08

Dovecot version: 1.1-rc8, 1.1-rc9 System: Linux-2.6.2x User-Agent: claws-mail-3.3 and 3.4 When appending messages (e.g. copy from mailclient local folder or second server to dovecot imap folder) dovecot answers with: <tag> OK [APPENDUID <n> <m>] Append completed\r\n This answer often reaches the client as two or more TCP packets, the client (when not using TCP_NODELAY on its socket) ACKs with some delay. When copying lots of (small) messages this delay has a very negative impact on copy time even though there are lots of network and system resources available. Sample sniffer output on client host: ... 1 0.0000 claws dovecot IMAP Request: 14639 APPEND "Test" (\Seen) {853} 2 0.0033 dovecot claws IMAP Response: +OK 3 0.0034 claws dovecot IMAP Request: <message> 4 0.0096 dovecot claws IMAP Response: 14639 5 0.0467 claws dovecot TCP 33453 > imap [ACK] 6 0.0481 dovecot claws IMAP Response: OK [APPENDUID 1204729411 2] Append Completed. 7 0.0481 claws dovecot TCP 33453 > imap [ACK] ... The delay of about 35ms between packet 4 and its ACK in packet 5 causes copies from client to server to be extremely slow. (Client and server on same 100Mb LAN, same result if client and server are on same host) The attached patch makes dovecot send the whole answer in a single packet, thus not triggering the delay issue. As far as I found out the delay is generated by Naggle algorithm, this algorithm being used by Linux TCP stack for small packets with the aim of improving payload/overhead share. [Dovecot] How many imap processes per user
by Martijn de Munnik 13 Jun '08

13 Jun '08

Hi, I'm using dovecot for the first time on a production server (before dovecot I used bincimapd). I have a question about the number of imap (not imap-login) processes created for a user. [Dovecot] strange looking code and userdb errors
by Tony den Haan 13 Jun '08

13 Jun '08

hi, i'm trying to use passdb ldap and userdb prefetch, using the userdb_ prefixes in pass_attrs, and i get: passdb didn't return userdb entries looking at the code at auth/userdb-prefetch.c i see: if (auth_request->userdb_reply == NULL) { if (auth_request->auth->userdbs->next == NULL) { /* no other userdbs */ auth_request_log_error(auth_request, "prefetch", "passdb didn't return userdb entries"); } else { /* more userdbs, they may know the user */ auth_request_log_info(auth_request, "prefetch", "passdb didn't return userdb entries"); } callback(USERDB_RESULT_USER_UNKNOWN, auth_request); return; } is this really correct? if so it migth be a good idea to at least print different errors Tony

[Dovecot] auth issues on centos5 with ldap backend
by Jurvis LaSalle 13 Jun '08

13 Jun '08

Hi, We've had some issues with auth. /var/log/secure is full of 1000s of these lines: Jun 4 19:12:08 khan dovecot-auth: pam_unix(dovecot:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=dovecot ruser= rhost=127.0.0.1 user=user123 Users can usually login OK with their ldap credentials, but occasionally logins slow to a crawl if not outright fail, esp people checking mail through Squirrelmail. Things get better after a dovecot restart. Googling around, I thought if we switched the order or disabled the second passdb we had configured for our dovecotadmin account, these failures would go away but that did not happen. Any thoughts or additional info I can provide? Pardon the unusual install prefix. We're trying to keep the source install separated from the ancient dovecot rpm shipped in rhel5. [Dovecot] Antispam plugin custom behavior?
by Kyle Wheeler 12 Jun '08

12 Jun '08

Hello, I currently have a setup on my system with what I call "magic folders" to enable spam filter training. Here's how it works: 1. If you have a false-negative, put the spam into the Spam.Report folder 2. If you have a false-positive (which has all kinds of ugly spamassassin protective markup in it), put the message into the Spam.NotSpam folder Currently what happens is that a cron job comes along every five minutes and processes the messages in those folders. In the case of the NotSpam folder, it strips the message of the spamassassin markup, retrains the bayesian net, and redelivers the message (e.g. via deliver). In the case of the Report folder, the message is used to train the bayesian net (among other things) and then deleted. I'd love to be able to trigger these actions when the mail is moved, rather than have a cron job inspecting the mailboxes. I looked into the antispam plugin (http://johannes.sipsolutions.net/Projects/dovecot-antispam) which seems nice but doesn't appear sufficiently generic for my needs. What would really work is if I could get it set up such that putting a message into either of those directories is turned into piping the message to a script of my choosing (a different one for each folder). Does anyone know a good way of getting my own custom behavior in here, or is my cronjob setup probably the best way? ~Kyle -- The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds. The pessimist fears it is true. -- J. Robert Oppenheimer

[Dovecot] quota-rewrite patch & userdb quota overriding
by Alan Premselaar 12 Jun '08

12 Jun '08

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I've spent the past couple of hours trying to figure this out by checking the wiki and googling, but haven't come up with anything that works yet. I just installed dovecot 1.0.14 with the quota-rewrite (1.09) patch and i'm trying to get the quota overridden via a passwd-file type userdb. I had 1.0.13 without the new quota style patched in working but having trouble figuring this out. any help would be appreciated. prior to the quota-rewrite patch (which i installed with the hopes of using quota_warn feature) i was able to put the following line into my passwd-file userdb and it was working: alan:*:1000:1000::/home/alan::userdb_quota=maildir:storeage=2048000:ignore=Sent (which is what I wanted) but now with the new quota definition style, I'm not sure what I need to define the extra fields as. here is dovecot -n: # 1.0.14: /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf log_path: /var/log/dovecot.log protocols: imap imaps managesieve ssl_cert_file: /etc/pki/tls/certs/dovecot.pem ssl_key_file: /etc/pki/tls/private/dovecot.pem disable_plaintext_auth: no login_dir: /usr/local/var/run/dovecot/login login_executable(default): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(imap): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap-login login_executable(managesieve): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/managesieve-login login_greeting_capability(default): yes login_greeting_capability(imap): yes login_greeting_capability(managesieve): no verbose_proctitle: yes mail_location: maildir:~/Maildir mail_debug: yes maildir_copy_with_hardlinks: yes mail_executable(default): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap mail_executable(imap): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap mail_executable(managesieve): /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/managesieve mail_plugins(default): quota imap_quota mail_plugins(imap): quota imap_quota mail_plugins(managesieve): mail_plugin_dir(default): /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap mail_plugin_dir(imap): /usr/local/lib/dovecot/imap mail_plugin_dir(managesieve): /usr/local/lib/dovecot/managesieve sieve_storage(default): sieve_storage(imap): sieve_storage(managesieve): ~/sieve sieve(default): sieve(imap): sieve(managesieve): ~/.dovecot.sieve auth default: ~ passdb: ~ driver: pam ~ userdb: ~ driver: passwd-file ~ args: /usr/local/etc/dovecot.passwd ~ userdb: ~ driver: passwd ~ socket: ~ type: listen ~ master: ~ path: /var/run/dovecot/auth-master ~ mode: 384 ~ user: dovecot ~ group: dovecot plugin: ~ quota_rule: *:storage=1G ~ quota_rule2: Trash:storage=100M thanks, alan -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.8 (Darwin) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iEYEARECAAYFAkhPd+cACgkQE2gsBSKjZHQNMACghSk7awVX1Aj5HVeo0KjRxyZc lT0AoLJA00SiYiefi2wNrAOt7L6N5eg4 =mA8L -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

[Dovecot] Wrong message information
by Anders 12 Jun '08

12 Jun '08

We have a few users that every so often get empty data in their message overview. From and subject are empty, and the date is 1-Jan-1970. When opening the message in full view, all things are fine. Also, the data in the actual maildir file is fine. It looks a lot like the issue described here: http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2008-March/029282.html The server is Linux, ext3, no NFS, and Dovecot 1.1.rc4. The few clients that have had this problem so far have been Outlook Express. What can be done to debug this? Thanks, Anders.

[Dovecot] Dovecot 1.1 rc9 compilation warnings
by Chris Wakelin 11 Jun '08

I've tried compiling 1.1.rc9 on everything to hand and I get various compilation warnings (but the compilation finishes). I don't know whether any of them are worth tracking down? I'm guessing most of the differences depend on the default gcc options and a couple of them are probably specific to our setup. [Dovecot] Lucene index not updated when one saves a message from one folder to the other
by Asheesh Laroia 11 Jun '08

11 Jun '08

I'm running 1.1 rc8, and I enabled the Lucene indexes. I find that if a bunch of messages arrive in INBOX and I then move them to archive, the next time I do an X-TEXT-FAST search, Dovecot has to re-index the mails that I think it had indexed when they were in INBOX. This seems silly, since Dovecot was the one copying them (and then deleting, since that's what I mean by move). Will this change? -- Asheesh. -- Elliptic paraboloids for sale.

[Dovecot] Converting from maildir to dbox

Does anyone have a config file where they have a working dbox configuration? Regards, Kjartan

[Dovecot] Auto creating client folders on the IMAP server after installing client.
by Radio Tron 11 Jun '08

11 Jun '08

Hello, could someone help. I have installed Dovecot+SSL+TLS+Thunderbird and all is well except one thing. After installing TBird and adding the required data (smtp server and auth info, imap/pop server and auth info) I am able to view mail in my TBird Inbox BUT Trash and Sent don't work - it pops up saying folder doesn't exist on the server - can't the darn thing, auto create a folder on the server instead of cribbing to me??? Is there a painless (automatic way) to auto create client directories on the Dovecot server (in the users home dir on the server - i am using maildir/). I don't want to maintain a list of clients(TBird, outlook, eudora..) with their directory structure and then remember what user has what clients installed and Gahhh! How do i do this?? Is this explained/documented somewhere in simple language(for a newbie - I'm struggling through the RFC's but they are awfully obscure and don't seem to answer my question directly)? I've also googled but that's worse. Thank you for your patience and time. I'd like to add that I plan to sync GMail, Dovecot and a multitude-of-stupid-clients in some mysterious way so any advice in advance is more than welcome.

[Dovecot] Multiple SSL certificates with dovecot.
by Andre Rodier 10 Jun '08

10 Jun '08

Hello all, By advance, I hope you'll excuse my probably not perfect English, which is not my mother tongue. I have always appreciated dovecot for this simplicity to setup and lightweight, but today, after many installations, I cannot find how to setup dovecot for my configuration. - I use only IMAPS to retrieve the mails. - I manage two domain names - I use CA-Cert certificates So,the question is : how to setup dovecot to select the appropriate certificate, according to the domain name I use when I retrieve mails using the IMAPS protocol ? Thanks. Andre Rodier.

[Dovecot] inetd & corrupt environment
by Gelu G. Lupas 09 Jun '08

09 Jun '08

Hello. I'm having the following problem with dovecot 1.0.12 and above, on a FreeBSD 7.0 system - I'm trying to run pop3-login from inetd and I keep getting this error after authentication: May 25 09:46:19 charlie dovecot: POP3(gelu): /libexec/ld-elf.so.1: environment corrupt; missing value for no-nuls oe-ns-eoh The problem persists if I uncomment the lines with no-nuls oe-ns-eoh in dovecot.conf. I've also tried running pop3-login from tcpserver/ucspi-tcp and I still get the same error. Version 1.0.1 works fine on a similar setup. Please reply if you have any idea regarding a fix for this error. I need to run dovecot under a tcp wrapper of some kind (preferably inetd) as the standalone daemon doesn't allow any method to restrict access by IP. The allow_nets extra field doesn't help much as I'm using PAM and do not want to maintain yet another passdb. Restricting access via firewall rules is not an option. Until I find a way to restrict access by IP address, dovecot will only listen on the private IP address (192.168.100.1). My dovecot configuration follows: # 1.0.13: /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf base_dir: /var/run/dovecot/ protocols: pop3 listen: 192.168.100.1 ssl_cipher_list: ALL:!LOW disable_plaintext_auth: no login_dir: /var/run/dovecot/login login_executable: /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/pop3-login login_greeting: login_process_size: 32 login_max_processes_count: 32 login_max_connections: 128 max_mail_processes: 128 verbose_proctitle: yes first_valid_uid: 1000 mail_privileged_group: mail mail_location: mbox:~/Mail/:INBOX=/var/mail/%u mail_executable: /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/pop3 mail_plugin_dir: /usr/local/lib/dovecot/pop3 pop3_uidl_format: %08Xu%08Xv pop3_client_workarounds: outlook-no-nuls oe-ns-eoh auth default: mechanisms: plain login process_size: 64 passdb: driver: pam userdb: driver: passwd socket: type: listen client: path: /var/spool/postfix/private/auth mode: 432 user: postfix group: postfix ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Finally - A spam blocker that actually works. http://www.bluebottle.com/tag/4

[Dovecot] EXPUNGE delay
by Eugene 09 Jun '08

09 Jun '08

Hi people! I just switched one of my servers from Courier to Dovecot. Planned to do it anyway but had to do it faster after the discovery that courier [the version I had installed, at least] returns malformed headers for a few messages, causing Outlook Express to completely ignore them. Curiously, they were visible in Squirrelmail and Nokia Series60 e-mail client. Overal I am quite happy but have one little problem. More often than not, I have to press 'Purge' button two or more times in order to actually remove the deleted messages. The fragment of Outlook's IMAP log is below. Interestingly, Dovecot 1.0.7 (on another server) does not have such problem. http://dovecot.org/releases/1.1/rc/dovecot-1.1.rc9.tar.gz http://dovecot.org/releases/1.1/rc/dovecot-1.1.rc9.tar.gz.sig Not many bug reports these last few days, so maybe this release will be a good one. + Maildir: When hardlink-copying a file, copy the W=<vsize> in the filename if it exists in the original filename. - mbox: With rc8 empty lines were inserted in the middle of saved mails' headers. - maildir: Fixed problems with opening newly saved messages which we saw in index file but couldn't see in dovecot-uidlist. Happened only when messages weren't saved via Dovecot (deliver or IMAP). - Several bugfixes to handling sort indexes - deliver: Boolean settings that were supposed to default to "yes" were set to "no" unless explicitly defined in dovecot.conf: dotlock_use_excl, maildir_copy_with_hardlinks, mbox_dirty_syncs, mbox_lazy_writes.

[Dovecot] typo in failures.c
by Mike Abbott 08 Jun '08

Hi, I found a typo on line 101 of dovecot-1.1.rc8/src/lib/failures.c. The first two arguments to io_add() are reversed. The fd should be first, and IO_WRITE second.

[Dovecot] last login time and host
by Dmitry Pryadko 07 Jun '08

Hi. How can I write login name, timestamp and remote host address to MySQL database every time user connects? Now I run a daemon, which "tails" log file and parses output, but maybe that can be done more simply ? -- Dmitry Pryadko http://www.hc.ru
