Hi all, while I am rather a beginner when it comes to IMAP, I was thinking whether it would be possible (and feasible) to implement setting and unsetting of IMAP keywords with the means of virtual folders in Dovecot. The background is that the IMAP keywords seem to be a very useful thing to me: I would often like to be able to 'tag' a message so that it is easy to group with other similar messages and easy to find/ browse later. The problem is that not all IMAP clients support this functionality (as far as I am aware, mine which happens to be The Bat! does not); the only way of achieving similar results is using regular folders for grouping messages but this has several disadvantages, the most prominent one being unable to assign more than one 'tag' to a message this way (without copying a message). What I am thinking of is a server-side 'helper' that intends to achieve functionality similar to native client keywords support by the means of providing 'virtual folders' (as opposed to regular folders that we've known for a long time). The server would expose a list of virtual folders (user defined, either server-side by modifying the configuration, or client-side, by using the existing 'create regular folder' folder functionality but using a special name format that would be recognized by the server to be virtual folder related). These virtual folders would, upon moving a message to them, apply a keyword to the message (but the message would not be moved as it would be the case with regular folders). Upon moving a message from a virtual folder, the keyword would be reset. This means that the messages would not normally be moved from their place in existing hard folder structure but they would additionally be flagged with a keyword (or more of them) and be visible in respective virtual folders. The result is: - keywords support for clients that do not natively support it, - leaving existing message folder structure intact, - support for multiple keywords/ labels per message (one virtual folder = one keyword), - browsing flagged messages via respective virtual folders. What do you think of it? While I've been toying with this and similar ideas for a long time, what I propose above is of course heavily influenced by the recent addition of IMAP access to Gmail ([1]). While I still do not have it enabled for my account, I presume this is how the Gmail labels get translated to IMAP client ([2], [3]). [Dovecot] few questions about 1.1*

Hi! I'm testing 1.1, and have some questions. (How) Can I override the default maildir++ quota setting (I mean quota_rule) in the userdb, so that one won't have quota at all. Right now I'm setting a very high limit in the userdb with quota_rule=*:storage=99G in the extra field. Prior to 1.1 I was using 1.0 and had fs quota. I've had set up dovecot so that the indexes were stored on another partition where there were no fs quotas for the users. Now I'm trying to use maildir++ quota, and wondering if there is still any use of keeping the index files on a separate partition. This will be maybe a bit stupid, but do I still need the quota plugin to be loaded in the protocol {imap,pop3,lda} sections if I'm using the above mentioned new 1.1 maildir++ quota? Furthermore, will deliver be aware of the new quota system? Thanks! Daniel

Hi! I'm guessing this is the append bug which is still present in dovecot-1.1beta4?: Info: IMAP(leva): Disconnected: EOF while appending bytes=31665/119125 This happens after sending a mail, and trying upload/copy that mail from my local "Sent" folder to my IMAP server's Sent folder. Daniel

Is it possible to modify an emails subject line in a sieve script? I've seen references to 'addtag' whilst googling, but it appears dovecots implementation doens't support it - are there any other methods? [Dovecot] SSL help needed - "no root certificate"

Hi. I've spent the past few hours trying to get SSL working right in Dovecot 1.0.5 and now I must turn to you for help. I purchased an SSL certificate from Go Daddy. I pointed ssl_cert_file to the .crt file and ssl_key_file to the .key file, but the client (Mail.app) complains: Mail was unable to verify the identity of this server, which has a certificate issued to "imap.nccom.com". The error was: There is no root certificate for this server. So I tried downloading Go Daddy's root certificate and pointing ssl_ca_file to that file, but that didn't help. So I tried pointing ssl_ca_file to the intermediate certificate sent to me by Go Daddy, but that breaks things to the point where I never even get the above message; just nothing happens at all. I'm not sure what to try next and am happy to entertain any suggestions. Thanks...

[Dovecot] SSL/TLS with Outlook client

I am trying to get TLS to work with Outlook 2007 and I've hit a small problem. Whenever I start it up, I get this error: "The server you are connected to is using a security certificate that cannot be verified. The target principal name is incorrect." (yes/no choice of trusting) I first tried with a wildcard cert (*.elisand.com), and then tried with mail.elisand.com - both certs are from cacert.org and the root CA certs are installed and functioning properly on my system (so the certs should be trusted). I've searched all over Google and such trying to find out why Outlook would give me this error from an IMAP/TLS connection (closest I could find was Exchange related info), and I know this is by no means an Outlook mailing list... though I'm just wondering if anyone else on here has ever encountered this problem before and could point me in the right direction to getting the SSL cert working with Outlook. [Dovecot] How to debug slow operation

Hello, I am no programmer at all. I have dovecot set up on two very similar machines. On one of the boxes, the dovecot server has recently been showing slower response times. It feels slower. Where it is slower, dovecot works as an auth server for postfix. I have replaced exim with postfix on that box and I think since then dovecot started to slow down. On the other machine the MTA is exim. I'd like to ask how to go about debugging the problem. Neither machine serves many users, the one that is slower has currently only two. It's a home setup really. [Dovecot] graceful failure when some folders are not available...

Hi folks. Quick question in the hopes that someone knows the answer, before I dig in the code some more. In testing a new setup with some long-term archival mbox-format mailboxes stored on an NFS mount, we've found the following: if the mount is unavailable for any reason, the user cannot log into their email at all. Dovecot says: "stat() failed with mbox foo" and dies. This is coming from the mbox sync checks. (It's possible the same happens with a maildir folder--I'm just specifying mbox because that's what we've tested with so far). Is there a way to reconfigure this behavior? I could maybe see a fatal abort if the inbox is unavailable, but for other folders it seems rather... presumptuous. I have to think there's already a way to handle this more gracefully in the config and I'm just not seeing it. Also, does anyone know offhand if this behavior is the same for folders that aren't in the default/inbox namespace? That would seem *really* wrong. Any thoughts? Thanks much, -Brian

This message that I just sent did the error which was a reply. But, a new message I created earlier today after installing Beta 4 worked fine. Hello all, I'm trying to enable 3 different features in my mail system (postfix, amavisd, dovecot). 1)out of office auto reply 2)script execution based on email 3)automatically add disclaimer/signature to outgoing email (also listed in order of importance to me) I'm looking for pointers to documentation or instructions. It seems that 1 and 2 would best be done in dovecot somewhere, while 3 is probably best implemented in postfix. I've upgraded to latest Thunderbird client and recompiled latest dovecot source repository code and this problem still persists. I have two accounts which I've been transferring email between for months. Now when I attempt this the following loop begins and the only way to stop it is to restart both Thunderbird and dovecot. The RFC says <http://www.isi.edu/in-notes/rfc3501.txt> this: TEXT <string> Messages that contain the specified string in the header or body of the message. But with the current hg tip (see linked rawlogs), SEARCH TEXT provides results disjoint from SEARCH FROM. [Dovecot] Courier to Dovecot: problems with folders

Hi all, I am migrating a maildir Courier-IMAP installation to Dovecot. Almost everything seems to work well, but I still have problems accessing subfolders. First let's see what I have done. I used the courier-dovecot-migrate.pl script suggested in http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration/Courier to convert mailboxes from Courier to Dovecot. No problems here. My dovecot.conf contains this: (...) mail_location = maildir:/mail/vmail/domains/%h namespace private { prefix = INBOX. inbox = yes } (...) The subscriptions file in the mailboxes looks correct to me. It includes all the folders and subfolders, i.e.: Sent Trash Drafts mail.dovecot mail.misc mail.postmaster tools web.apache web.css Folders separated by "." are actually subfolders: mail ---- dovecot | --- misc | --- postmaster I let the configuration of my IMAP clients unchanged from Courier to Dovecot. That is, they specify the "INBOX." prefix, as before. For instance, with Pine: folder-collections=mymail {mymail.example.com/user=John.Smith}INBOX.[] Now the problem: I get different behaviours depending on the client I use to access to Dovecot: - Thunderbird: All the folders are seen correctly. But the whole folders tree is under "Inbox", while with Courier the first-level folders (i.e. Drafts, mail, web) were at the same level of Inbox - Webmail (Squirrelmail 1.4.8): The same as above. - Pine: The folders are apparently correct, and are not under Inbox, but I can access only the first-level folders: the folders containing sub-folders are empty, therefore the subfolders cannot be accessed. Hi, running the current version from http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot/ (but the same happens with 1.1.beta3) After yesterday's patches, squirrelmail (tested with 1.4.11 and 1.4.10a) complains when appending to the Sent folder (after sending a message): ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server. Query: SELECT "INBOX" dovecot's log says dovecot: IMAP(jh): Disconnected: EOF while appending bytes=12780/37798 I have captured the conversation with tcpdump (http://plonk.de/imap.cap) and it looks like dovecot is closing the connection. Hello List, I have a question about dovecot-1.1.0-beta3 but first I'll ramble a little bit: Recently I upgraded a 0.99 installation of dovecot to 1.0.5. All went relatively smoothly until the dovecot-auth process began returning "out of memory" after a day. There is a rather large user base here. The current setup is using passdb pam with blocking=yes, with pam_ldap.so handling most authentication (although in special cases I am using a custom written pam module which I have disabled to eliminate as the source of the leak). The dovecot-auth process' VmRSS size grows by 4k per request and has a limit of 256megs. Unfortunately turning blocking=yes off isn't an option. The reason I must have it turned on is that the custom pam module is changing the username on specific requests. I am trying to pinpoint the memory leak (pam_ldap is my biggest suspect right now though I'm going to try running valgrind on a test system). For now I have set shutdown_clients=no and am restarting dovecot at regular intervals. Okay the question: In dovecot 1.1.0 beta3 I see that blocking=yes is now on, no matter what. Has something been done to address potential memory leaks in pam modules? Thanks, -Andrew

Hi dovecotters, I have a system running 1.0rc1 right now and am having problems (more on that later). I know that 1.0.5 is "current" but I'm running Debian Stable (Etch) and have reservations of upgrading until nothing works anymore ;-) Do I really need to make the upgrade to 1.0.5, and if so can anyone here point out how to do so using the standard Debian apt-get process? -- Mitch

Hi, ive walked into a enviroment where the previous admin has being using pop and making the email clients leaving a copy of the mail on the workstation.. Now overtime these mailboxes (mbox format) have grown between 1,5 to 1,8 Gigs large I want to convert all these mailbox to IMAP (only 15) and want to know whats the largested suggest folder size per user dovecot IMAP runs smoothly with good responce times.. I know the users also have large OUT LOOK pst files 4.5GIGs and wondering if I could also intergrate that into IMAP? Please any feedback would be great on this topic..??

Would you be so kind to point me to some source where it is explained - currently users have to insert the password twice - when they open the shell window and when they start Pine. Another question - may be you can help me: Currently we use Pine with IMAP (dovecot); both INBOX and folder collection are saved on the Linux server. But how to save the "saved-messages" and "sent-mail" folders in the user's home directory on the server? When I was initially testing dovecot 1.1b2,3 I had ACLs turned on and encountered this problem below. I had them turned off until now, I'll need to have ACLs working before I can widen testing. I'm not sure how to make "env MAIL=maildir:~/Maildir gdb /tmp/imap" load the ACL plugin so I assume that is why it does not crash; not getting any log either from that, maybe I made a mistake? But when running mutt, I can load it up with the inbox, then when I ask for imap://server/mail/ it crashes with the assertion at the bottom. Let me know if I need to provide more info. Thanks. Hi, I'm using a mixture of Exim, Dovecot and Deliver. Exim receives the mail and validates the user against our database, then pipes the e-mail to deliver which puts it in the right mailbox. We were running Exim 4.67 and Dovecot 1.0.1, and today I did an in-place upgrade to Dovecot 1.0.5 and Exim 4.68. However, now Exim is failing deliveries saying deliver returned code 75. None of the config files (Exim nor Dovecot's) have changed, nor have permissions on the mailbox paths, and Dovecot can still access the mailboxes through IMAP just fine. If I delete the dovecot log-file and force a mail delivery, the log gets re-created with mode 0644 and owner dovecot-auth:localservice, which confirms the user running dovecot is the same group, so why doesn't it have permissions? I've read on another message that return code 75 is EX_TEMPFAIL, what does this mean? My sendmail_path is the correct path to Exim, verified by killing Exim and copying and pasting the command to start it back up again. Any advice would be appreciated, as I may have to restore back to 1.0.1. I 'hg pull'ed and now my Dovecot segfaults when I select a particular folder. I've removed all files with 'index' in the name, so I don't think it's due to bad indexes. My config has folders show up in the root namespace as well as hidden ones like mail/ for compat. In thunderbird when I set the namespace prefix to mail/, I effectively cannot subscribe to folders. You can pull up the folder list, select some folders to subscribe to, hit okay, and nothing changes in thunderbird: 3 subscribe "mail/Spam" 3 OK Subscribe completed. 4 lsub "" "mail/*" 4 OK Lsub completed. Item 1: I store the indexes and control in their own directory. I noticed in 1.1: 1192 ./private/indexes/.INBOX 32 ./private/indexes/.Trash 1228 ./private/indexes 4 ./private/control/.INBOX/.INBOX 84 ./private/control/.INBOX 4 ./private/control/.Trash/.Trash 12 ./private/control/.Trash 100 ./private/control 1332 ./private .INBOX/.INBOX and .Trash/.Trash are both empty. This was an empty directory, I logged in with thunderbird and looked at the inbox and Trash folders. Item 2: I wanted to try imap_logout_format, forgetting what params it uses and taking a stab at it, but it seems to be ignored? It shows up in dovecot -n. Hi all, I'm getting core dumps from Dovecot when using Thunderbird as a client. Everything is fine when using the Apple Mail client. I've appended the debug dumps to this message so they are out of the way, but they should be read now. I think the problem might be that io->prev and io->next aren't reliably initialised in ioloop.c:io_add. The value that io->prev has when the program crashes is just completely bogus. It isn't aligned correctly, and it doesn't point to anywhere inside the process's memory map. I don't know what *io->next is, but it sure doesn't look like a struct io_file. It doesn't even look like a struct io. Part of the garbage in *io->next is the char sequence "/vol/home/lloyd/Maildir/new" which is part of my mail box. *io is not in the doubly linked list in current_io_look->io_files. I'm guessing that this object has been unlinked already. Some further digging (not shown here) shows that io->callback is notify_callback. It is set to NULL by the time imap crashes. I am testing dovecot 1.1 betas on a testing system, hoping to take advantage of self repairing and NFS-capable indexes when 1.1 is sensible to put into production. I ran into a number of issues that I did not have with 1.0, and I think I'll just pick one or more at a time and report them rather than try to report every single issue at once, hoping that some of the fixes will solve more than one problem. I started with 1.1b2 just for record, but the issues seem to be present in 1.1b3 as well. I realized yesterday that using the acl plugin may be complicating my testing and results, so I have disabled it for now and am connecting with plaintext IMAP just so I can sniff connections and see what is happening. I am running it on FreeBSD 6.2-stable from Sep 19 2007. I have some private namespaces with prefix "mail/" and "Mail/" that I wish to provide for users for compatability with clients set with those prefixes. I've been wanting to try out Squat for full-text indexing for a while now, so I finally gave it a whirl. I did a fresh pull from hg. I have it enabled, but it's taking *forever* to do a query. (Using alpine, I issued a Select command for all messages with some word anywhere, which presumably caused the Squat indexer to run.) I think Dovecot is infinite looping. I thought something was wrong when I attached strace to it for five minutes and saw no calls to read() or open(). Hello All, Dovecot 1.0.3 I am coming from UW IMAP, and I'm finding for some reason that mail is getting stored in a variety of places (which I believe, is because by default UW imap allowed access to the entire home directory). All files are mbox. My default delivery location is ~/.mail Thus: * At least a couple of my users have mail in ~/INBOX, as well as ~/INBOX.drafts (not many users so I don't really care about this). * Several of my users have their mail folders in their home directory, AND in a mail folder. For example, my "test case" user, had the following .mailboxlist file: mail/Sent mail/Drafts mail/Spam mail/Trash Sent Items Drafts Deleted Items Junk E-mail Now, here's the question. I'd like to make it so that everyone has what they had before, but that any new folders are created in ~/mail/ (so that if I ever DO decide to convert, I know where to look). What I thought would be useful for this is make the default namespace "", but set it hidden. Then define a secondary namespace (mail) and use that. However, when I did this, and got a mailbox list, it still recursively listed every file in the homedir. My mail agent is postfix and by default it imposes the INBOX size of 50 meg. I would like my imap mail clients (I'm using Thunderbird) to "see" this and warn me when my inbox fills up. I tried doing it with the old quota system but wasn't successful. Hi all again, I've just realized that I did a bad cut&paste in my previous mail, then I rewrite my request. I apologize. I am trying to set up my dovecot configuration using LDAP and virtual mailboxes. I succeeded in authenticating the users correctly with LDAP, but have problems with referencing the correct mail location directory. I manage several domains. Hi, Resending this. Does anyone have a clue? -------------- I downloaded the updated files and now I also upgraded to beta2 as you released late last night. Good work maintaining dovecot I have to say. :-) Unfortunately  I still can't search using thunderbird. I get no errors in the log now but thunderbird doesn't find any messages. Hi, since upgrading from 1.0.5 to latest 1.1-hg I get an incomplete subject line for mails autogenerated by one of our systems in the message list (Thunderbird and mutt). When I open the mail the subject line is intact. It appears that the system is using multiline subjects. Example Subject: =?ISO-8859-1?B?SG9zdG1hc3RlcjogMDAwMDEwNjM1OiBOYW1lc2U=?= =?ISO-8859-1?B?cnZlcjogTmV1dmVyZ2FiZSBvZGVyIMRuZGVydW5n?= is printed as Subject: Hostmaster: 000010635: Namese in the Message list and correctly decoded as Subject: Hostmaster: 000010635: Nameserver: Neuvergabe oder Änderung when viewing the message. I installed 1.1Beta2 over 1.0.5 last night. My 1.0.5 setup was running with no problems at all. Stupid me overwrote my dovecot.conf file with a vanilla one. I know I know, backup!!! I am pretty sure my old dovecot.conf file did not specify any namespaces, but I could be mistaken. My Thunderbird and Squirrelmail are working fine on the new 1.1Beta2 setup. But, my smartphone running Windows Mobile 5.0 does not see the inbox or my folders. Does anybody know what might be different between 1.0.5 and 1.1Beta2 in regards to pocket outlook? This is on a Gentoo system. I am migrating from UW's POP3 server (mbox), to Dovecote (mbox -> maildir). Anyway, I am concerned about the Logging details offered by Dovecot, as I manage several details from the logging information provided by UW's Syslog information. I'm a bit of a newbie, especially when it comes to dovecot internals, but nevertheless, I need some help: I'm working on a dovecot plugin, and I would like to copy a mail message from the mail store out to a temporary file, less a few headers: static const char *const exclude_headers[] = { "X-DSPAM-Signature" } strcpy(fname, mktemp(fname)); fd = creat(fname, 0600); mail_get_stream(mail, NULL, NULL, &input); output = o_stream_create_fd_file(fd, 0, TRUE); input = i_stream_create_header_filter(input, HEADER_FILTER_EXCLUDE | HEADER_FILTER_NO_CR, exclude_headers, N_ELEMENTS(exclude_headers), null_header_filter_callback, NULL); o_stream_send_istream(output, input); But all I get in the temp file is the message body, i.e. no headers at all. What am I doing wrong here? My understanding (or hope:) of what the function i_stream_create_header_filter() is supposed to do might not be accurate: I was hoping that it would exclude the aforementioned headers, but leave the rest of the headers as is. Last night dovecot died because of time changed backward. I noticed that the line from dovecot read Oct 9 01:00:44 mailstore16 dovecot: Time just moved backwards by 132 seconds. This might cause a lot of problems, so I'll just kill myself now. Shouldn't such lines have the word "Error" or "Fatal"? If I set the log_path = to a file, will syslog messages still be generated?

Seeing a problem with a certain user causing dovecot to crash when copying mail to a folder. This looks similar to a bug someone on the mailing list posted recently. Since the backtrace mentions the index, I tried deleting all of the index files for the user (including subfolders) but it had no effect. Seems that the bug still happens when creating the index for the first time. Unfortunately, I can't pin down if there is a particular message causing the problem but I'll see if I can track it using strace. Lines are broken for clarity. This is dovecot 1.0.5 on CentOS 4.5. Hello I'm currently trying to use Active Directory with Unix extensions to store UID, GID and homedir and retrieve them with ldap I don't want to allow anonymous bindings and I would rather not use TLS and manage a PKI. So I'm trying to use SASL to do a Kerberos authentication for Dovecot against AD LDAP. I'm currently getting GSSAPI errors about the lack of "credentials cache". Looking at similar cases where services act as clients, like using nss_ldap for unix host accounts, I understand the credentials cache should be initiated by an external program (cron and startup script), at least with the TGT and maybe the TGS for ldap. Since usually kerberosv5 cache is based on the user id ( /tmp/krb5cc_0 for root) there's an option in ldap.conf (krb5_ccname) to set the filename (/etc/.ldapcache in nss_ldap tutorials) for this cache. Is there any way to do this with dovecot-ldap.conf or should I try to use "auth user" default cache filename ? Thanks in advance

[Dovecot] Mail client kill imap-login process

Hi, In my env we have quite a number of old PC which are running windows95. I have installed the thunderbird and outlook97 with the right configuration to dovecot. Everytime I starts the mail client it shows the following, dovecot: Oct 09 10:56:45 Info: imap-login: Disconnected: rip=172.24.65.60, lip=172.24.66.24 only then it shows the login screen. After submit the password, it doesn't seems to login properly. If I use the Outlook Express, it runs ok on the same machine? I can send and read email. I trace the process using strace but it failed since the pid got killed everytime I starts that two mail client. In order to make sure my dovecot run correctly, I run all mail clients from XP and it works like charm. Can someone share with my what should I do next or how to debug further? Thanks.

Hi all, I need some help interpreting the info I'm seeing in the dovecot logs. I have a user using Outlook who is having connectively problems. Below is a sample of what the Dovecot log is showing. Can anyone explain to me why multiple logins occur within a few seconds of each other? Also, as I understand it, the "Disconnected" messages mean the kernel told Dovecot the connection was closed. Hi, We're using Dovecot to proxy incoming POP3 and IMAP connections to the right server. We'd like to be able to see what connections are currently open on the proxy servers, without having the parse the log file. For normal mail processes it's possible to use verbose_proctitle for this purpose, but this setting doesn't work for proxy/login processes. Is it possible to do something similar for proxy processes? Even without displaying the username and IP address, it would be useful to be able to see the difference between normal (idle/active) login processes, and proxy processes. Onno

I'm migrating to LDAP mi local users, there is the auth section of my dovecot.conf -- auth default { mechanisms = plain socket listen { master { path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-master mode = 0660 user = dovecot group = nusers } } passdb ldap { args = /etc/dovecot/dovecot-ldap.conf } passdb pam { } userdb ldap { args = /etc/dovecot/dovecot-ldap.conf } userdb prefetch { } userdb passwd { } user = root } -- The idea is to try to find the user in the directory and if it isn't found then fallback to a local user lookup. My quota configuration is -- plugin { quota = maildir:storage=10240:ignore=Trash } -- I have some users with particular quotas. With LDAP lookups, there is no problem, in those cases I simply put their particular quota values in their entries and pass it to dovecot via user_attrs. I wonder how to do the same for local users, I mean, to have the ability of specifying particular quotas for some local users. Another doubt is how to express to Dovecot that a user have no quota at all, could I use 0? Regards, maykel

Hi, I was trying to install a qmail-ldap cluster. I have successfully setup dovecot to authenticate against ldap directory. But what I need is to enable imap session forwarding for qmail-ldap. For example when a user connects to a imapserver if the real mailhost of this user is different than the one that is connected so session is forwarded to real mailhost. Normally we can do that with courirer imap using auth_imap binary that comes with qmail-ldap which handles session forwarding. I have done this but got error auth_executable = /var/qmail/bin/auth_imap . Obviously it won't work. But I am not sure where to put /var/qmail/bin/auth_imap http://www.qmail-ldap.info/dovecot.php and http://www.qmail-ldap.info/imap_courier.php page shows a bit information about where to put it. -- Best regards, Omer mailto:omer@faruk.net

[Dovecot] thunderbird and email duplication

Hi all, I have recently switched over to Dovecot from CourierIMAP trying for some speedup, which I did get. Installation went OK, so all seemed fine. But suddenly I realised, that incoming emails are replicating themselves. This seems only to happen when connected with Thunderbird. I am also using Squirrelmail and KMail as clients which don't seem to show the behaviour. It seems to happen only for mails received during a Thunderbird session. When I close TBird and reopen it, only newly received messages will show the funny behaviour. The emails are real file copies in the Maildir, I have checked that. Running Dovecot on Debian Etch: dovecot --version: 1.0.0 (this is Debian package 1:1.0.0-1~bpo.1 from backports. I have tried the main package from Debian aswell, same result) with qmail delivering the mails to a Maildir without Dovecot's LDA. Clients: Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 on WinXP over Wireless LAN (tried Thunderbird/Iceweasel on Debian aswell) Squirrelmail and KMail (both running on the same box as Dovecot) don't show that behaviour. Has anybody seen anything similar or have any advice on what to look for? I would like to stick with Dovecot but the way it is looking now, I find working with emails near impossible. I have an Active Directory virtual setup and am using LDA to deliver to local recipients. Today I found a big problem with my configuration and not sure if this is fixable. Some of the users have multiple email addresses and the %n variable for user doesn't match their actual username. So if I have realname "Joe Bob" with a username of "joe" and an email of "jbob(a)somewhere.com", deliver will try to deliver to "jbob" and this is wrong. Here is the relevant part of my ldap config: user_attrs = mail,postOfficeBox=home user_filter = (|(mail=%n@%d)(proxyAddresses=%n@%d)(sAMAccountName=%u)) pass_attrs = mail,postOfficeBox=home pass_filter = (|(mail=%n@%d)(proxyAddresses=%n@%d)(sAMAccountName=%u)) Somehow I need to change the username from the LDAP lookup but it seems that the mail attribute does this already. If I switch the mail attribute with sAMAccountName the domain becomes NULL. Anyone know if this is fixable?

Hello! My local setup here is Exim 4.68, DSPAM 3.8.0 and Dovecot 1.0.5. Entirely on MySQL tables for virtual hosts and authentication. Dovecot does the authentication for Exim. What I am having problems with, is a simple sieve script to redirect a message that matches the "X-DSPAM-Result" header as "Spam" to another email address. When this rule matches, deliver returns in the log (which is attached) that "Sendmail process terminated abnormally, exit status: 75" What would cause this, and how can I resolve it? [Dovecot] Problem with bodystructure/partial fetch using 1.1*

Hi there I'm using dovecot-1.1b2/b3 with deliver. All information is stored in an SQL database and no errors related to this issue are written to the logs (actually I get no errors at all). I've run into at problem; FETCH BODYSTRUCTURE is broken after upgrading to dovecot 1.1b2 (same issue with 1.1b3). BODUSTRUCTURE only returns information from the first section (with incorrect content-type/disposition) and discards everything else. This problem is somehow related to deliver; IMAP returns the correct BODYSTRUCTURE for e-mails received before the upgrade, but an incorrect for ones received after the upgrade. This tells me that IMAP is working properly but somehow the MIME sections are being corrupted doing mail delivery (if I fetch the complete body nothing seems to be wrong). Also if I fetch a section something is not right - instead of just the section I get part of the Content-type header as well (but only half the header). Obviously this makes various webmail clients go somewhat crazy while Outlook/Thunderbirds dont mind (since they fetch the complete body and do the MIME parsing themselves). I run Thunderbird with message filters that sort mail into other folders, and this has killed me for the day. COPY commands (and I have verified this with a manual test) result in the message headers coming out correct but the body totally missing. Is this a known issue being addressed? Thanks Eric Weaver

Hello, dovecot version: 1.0.beta3-3ubuntu5.5 OS: 2.6.15-26-server i686 GNU/Linux Ubuntu dapper filesys: ext3 authentication is with ldap (Active Directory) the problem is that after a while with a number of pop3 connections (8 people who have checking every 5 minutes), the ldap_search gives 'Operation Error' . we have tried to use the global catalog, but that doesn't solve the problem. the binding is the problem, we must use binding, cause we don't get a userPassword field. Right now, we have switched to courierLDAP and it works for now, we'll have to see if it persists (we have set an LDAP timeout variable, but don't know if it's related.) Hi, we are facing some weird performance issues after we upgraded on of our mail servers to a new Opteron 64bit machine. The problem we are facing is that mail retrieval from external clients is incredibly slow. Fetching a mail with say a size of 3MB takes 7 minutes vs. sending exactly the same mail back to our postmaster account is only a question of seconds. I've verified this with various customers and thus I am completely lost here. The only service affected with this massive slowdown seems to be dovecot but unfortunately I cannot think of a way to debug the issue ... Beta2 still had a few bad bugs, but I'm hoping this release is near a usable state. I've been a bit busy with school lately so I haven't had time/energy to answer mails in here. The main reason has been this lab course (biochemistry) which ends on friday, so I'll try to start answering mails sometimes next week. Changes since beta2: - SORT fixes. Still buggy? - If Date: header doesn't exist or is broken, fallback to INTERNALDATE (as required by newer sort drafts, which I hadn't noticed before, v1.0.6 will have this too) - Log fatals/panics as such, instead of converting them to errors. - Don't bother logging "returned error 89" if the child process logged a fatal before that. - dovecot.index.cache file may have been updated wrong when saving messages causing all kinds of problems if it was - Some crashfixes

In the same time I will migrate from UW to Dovecot , I've read all the stuff about it on the Dovecot web site. [Dovecot] iPhone 1.1.1 problems.

I'm having problems with the iPhone client in the 1.1.1 version of the iPhone software. Things with other clients work fine, and the iPhone worked fine before it was upgraded to 1.1.1. Other phones on 1.1.1 failed. I'm still working on testing against the client with the iPhone 1.0.2 software on it. The problem is that the client simply doesn't connect to dovecot. I can see the packets passing back and forth in a number of ways, but haven't been able to see the contents. I tried turning on raw logging, but don't get log files for accesses from the iPhone. What I get are lines like so: Oct 13 00:08:34 bhuda dovecot: imap-login: Disconnected: rip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xx2, lip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xx1, TLS Turning off SSL both ways, and the message changes to: Oct 13 18:21:38 bhuda dovecot: imap-login: Aborted login: rip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xx2, lip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xx1 Tweaking the logging in the firewall reveals something interesting: apparently the phone makes the connection to 993, then dovecot drops the connection, but the phone keeps sending to it (and yes, I've tried setting the firewall to allow arbitrary traffic between the phone and the server). So, first question: is anyone who has clients using iPhone software version 1.1.1 working willing to share config information? Second question: suggestions for things to try to solve the problem? (Other than talk to apple as that process is underway)? For instance, a recipe to sniff the text of the interchange? Final question: Any other information I can provide that might help debug this? I have a Dovecot setup for a personal e-mail server. I have a cron job setup each evening which runs the following command to delete old messages from my Deleted Items folder. find ./ -type f -ctime +14 | xargs rm I don't know that much about bash scripting. I would like the output to tell me how many files were deleted. Can anybody share with me how can I get that done, or point in the correct direction? Thanks, Jeff

I just installed 1.1 beta 3 and noticed a problem when sending an e-mail with Squirrelmail. When I hit send, I get the following error in my log: Oct 16 11:35:54 apple dovecot: IMAP(jeff): Disconnected: EOF while appending bytes=1851/5926 Oct 16 11:35:54 apple imapproxyd[9132]: Raw_Proxy(): IMAP server unexpectedly closed the connection on sd 9 I am also using imapproxy. I wasn't sure if that line would help also. In Squirrelmail I get a LOGOUT message when it tries to redisplay the INBOX listing. The message does get sent correctly, but it does not get copied to my Sent Items folder. I went and deleted all of the dovecot.index* files and now I don't get that error anymore, but I now get the following error. The message is now copied to the Sent Items folder. Hi, I have installed dovecot v1.1.beta2 with the sieve plugin v.1.1.2. I have configured the following namespace: namespace: type: private separator: . prefix: INBOX. location: inbox: yes hidden: no list: yes When I create a rule which should move messages into the subfolder "Junk", Dovecot's deliver seems to ignore the namespace and creates a new folder .INBOX.Junk . I'm using deliver (1.0.5) with Postfix (2.1.6). I made a test for a few minutes in a moderated busy server. While most mails was delivered, a lot of them failed with this error: deliver(userfoo): Oct 15 09:58:31 Error: net_connect(/var/run/dovecot/auth-master) failed: Resource temporarily unavailable Sounds to me something like not enough auth-master to answer every concurrent deliver. I get this assertion failure: file maildir-save.c: line 456 (maildir_save_finish): assertion failed: (ctx->seq != 0) once a while when I APPEND messages to a folder. My plugin doesn't touch the ctx, especially not the internal maildir one, but I have no idea where to start looking. Any hints? johannes

This might be useful to someone so I'll throw it out there. Patch against 1.0.5 adds support for two new configuration params: pop3_debug_client_commands = TOP, RETR, DELE imap_debug_client_commands = FETCH, DELETE Obviously add in whichever ones you're interested in, or none, or comment them out completely. It'll log the appropriate events: Oct 12 18:30:18 kea dovecot: IMAP(zach): Client command: FETCH The parameters are included for POP3 events. Wasn't sure quite how to do the same for IMAP and for my purposes it's not too important so imap command parameters aren't logged. Running smoothly here with a few dozen IMAP and POP3 users. Not suggesting this gets added to the codebase - I just needed it to help debug some other IMAP software and thought it might be useful. Zach.

Hi, we're trying to migrate from UW imap 2001a-10, which doesn't seem to use the UIDL format documented in the wiki. It seems to use a 16 character long MD5 hash of something. I've tried configuring Dovecot to do the same but the value comes out differently. The main thing that I can see is getting in the way is that the UIDL format is not documented sufficiently. There is no description of using numbers to restrict the length of the output, and no documentation of special features like X or M. Can someone shed some light on these? -- Regards, Oliver

[Dovecot] GSSAPI Cross-Realm Patch

I've written a GSSAPI cross-realm auth patch for people not lucky enough to have the __gss_userok function, though it should apply pretty cleanly with that patch in place as well. The patch is available at: http://zinux.cynicbytrade.com/svn/servers/dovecot/cross-realm.diff.bz2 It works for me on MIT-kerb, and I tested compilation against heimdal, but I don't have a cross-realm setup to test functionality under heimdal (though I also have no reason to think it wouldn't work). Since neither MIT nor heimdal provide a gss_userok() function, I used the krb5_userok() function. So if you're using a mechanism other than krb5 this won't work. But it's the same thing that OpenSSH and the apps distributed with heimdal do, so it seemed relatively safe. I also choose to append the krb5_userok() check rather than replace the gss_compare_name() check -- that way same-realm auth works for non-krb5 mechanisms, and my new code doesn't get called unless the same-realm check fails. If you don't care about other mechanisms it would be faster to bypass the gss_compare_name() check entirely. If this is something you'd like to mainline I'd be happy to standardize the coding style -- just point me to a style definition document. And if it doesn't hit the mainline I expect to maintain it for the foreseeable future, with updates at the same URL. Zach

I've read documentation (obviously not the right parts) and googled, but I can't seem how to solve this simple problem: I have a machine running postfix/dovecot and using virtual domains, delivery happens with dovecot's LDA. I also have an Exchange machine that I have to house some of the users of a given domain. How can I tell either postifx in general or dovecot's LDA that whatever specific user that cannot be found in the virutal setup can be pawned off to a given relay-server which will sort it out? -A

Note that currently it's required to use an IP address since no DNS resolving is done.". I use a qmail cluster and Courier IMAP. In this system used the ldap field mailhost for proxy functionality with dns name as value. Is there a plan to add the DNS resolving to dovecot in host field; Is there any patch; Thanks Antonis

Hello I'm currently trying to use Active Directory with Unix extensions to store UID, GID and homedir and retrieve them with ldap. I don't want to allow anonymous bindings and I would rather not use TLS and manage a PKI. So I'm trying to use SASL to do a Kerberos authentication for Dovecot against AD LDAP. I'm currently getting GSSAPI errors about the lack of "credentials cache". Looking at similar cases where services act as clients, like using nss_ldap for unix host accounts, I understand the credentials cache should be initiated by an external program (cron and startup script), at least with the TGT and maybe the TGS for ldap. Since usually kerberosv5 cache is based on the user id ( /tmp/krb5cc_0 for root) there's an option in ldap.conf (krb5_ccname) to set the filename (/etc/.ldapcache in nss_ldap tutorials) for this cache. Is there any way to do this with dovecot-ldap.conf or should I try to use "auth user" default cache filename ? Thanks in advance

[Dovecot] Dovecot hanging up with many defunct processes

Hi, I am in a very awkward situation and need some kind of immediate fix up. I had installed dovecot in my organization as part of migration of email server. The setup involves sendmail, dovecot (imaps+pop3s) and webmail (squirrelmail) running on apache webserver. All was working fine until one day I found a lot of defunct processes on system related to dovecot. dovecot-auth, imap-login and imap were all defunct. The system is using pam_ldap and nss_ldap to authenticate users to a Windows 2003 Active Directory. Immediate restart of dovecot solved the problem for me that day, however since then it's been about 3 times that I've faced this problem. After visiting various forums I came to know one thing, that it has something to do with pam_ldap and nss_ldap. However with UW-IMAP we were using the same setup and we didn't find any problems there. It would be very kind of you, if you can help me out on this front as apart from these mishaps the mail server is running perfectly fine and we wish to continue using Dovecot for our setup in future as well. Hi everyone, I have a mail server with postfix 2.3.8-2, dovecot 1.0.0 and mysql with virtual users and domains. Everything is working but when a mail bounces it doesn't show me what is the email address with overquota. I'm using Dovecot Delivery Agent to send a mail when an email bounces. This is the message that shows me: Your message was automatically rejected by Dovecot Mail Delivery Agent. The following reason was given: Quota exceeded It doesn't show me what is the email address. Hi, I have a strange issue here. I have a large message of a svn commit and the message is cloning itself more and more. [Dovecot] Corrupt Message?

Dear List, Am accessing dovecot imap through squirrelmail. Squirrelmail paginates the message list into pages. All works fine except for the page one particular email is in. When I try to open that page (or in fact click 'show all') the server returns: ERROR: Bad or malformed request. Query: FETCH 549,551,555:557,563,565,567:569 (FLAGS UID RFC822.SIZE INTERNALDATE BODY.PEEK[HEADER.FIELDS (Date To Cc From Subject X-Priority Importance Priority Content-Type)]) Server responded: No mailbox selected. Could you possibly let me know what I should do and also how I can find the guilty mail file from that error? Can I just delete the email? Or is there a nice script to repair a dovecot maildir?
