[Dovecot] Dovecot connection error because of the desynchronization between a index file and it's log file

Today, i lost connection with the mail server. I think that there are some problem with the index file and it's log file. Following is the log for losing connection. I am getting random disconnects from my imap session, dificulties to revconnect, very sluggish behaviour when changing between mail folders also frequent and rapidly repititive messages on te client "mailserver x.x.x.x is not a imap4 server" I am running dovecot 1.0.rc2 from ports on OpenBSD 4.0 on a PIII, 500MHz 512MB My set up is very small - a webserver with a single imap account on it for myself and my wife and a pop3 account for a printserver. The clients are both Thunderbird on Linux (Ubuntu7.04 and Ubuntu 6.06 I have overall maybe 6000 mails distributed over all folders. Hi Is it legal/sensible to use the following in the conf file # default namespace namespace private { separator = / prefix = inbox = yes } # for backwards compatibility: namespace private { separator = . prefix = INBOX. inbox = yes hidden = yes } The goal would be to migrate away from an Courier server, whilst still supporting clients using their old settings, but going forward they can use the new settings? In particular I always noticed that OE would not set the namespace automatically, so being able to leave it blank would be an advantage (fewer config issues for customers) Grateful if someone could confirm this works ok? Compatibility issues with Thunderbird/OE/Outlook 2003+ in particular? Cheers Ed W

Hi, We are using dovecot version 1.0.3. We have dovecot-ldap configured to authenticate users using ldap database. We are facing the inactivity problem with dovecot. After some hrs of successful working, dovecot logs shows the connection inactive problem with pop3 & imap server, & it starts rejecting the connection requests from clients. The problem goes away once we restart dovecot. The problem occurs again & again after some random time. Please help us in solving this problem. [Dovecot] shared mailbox subfolder permissions

Hi all, when I create a subfolder in a public mailbox the dovecot-shared file is copied for the newly created subfolder and all mails get the owner, group and permissions from the file. Unfortunately the cur, new and tmp folders only get the permissions from the file but owner and group are set according to the creator. This effectivly makes the folder private to the creator. Is this the intended behavior? Is it a bug that has already been fixed in a later version? I am using 1.0.rc29. An example follows. Thanks for your help! [Dovecot] SSL connections frozen on Dovecot 1.0.0

Hello, We are running Dovecot 1.0.0 (Debian Etch, Backports.org, OpenSSL) in a production environment and we experience sporadic SSL connection problems. At the moment, it's difficult to tell if the server goes back to normal operation after some time or if it can be reproduces at any time because we have to restart it as soon as we get Nagios alerts. Some tests with openssl s_client have shown difficulties to proceed the SSL handshake (hanging at different stages), or no response to IMAP commands. SSL client used: openssl s_client -host imap -port 993 - First case : s_client hangs on the first output "CONNECTED(00000003)" and there is no handshake at all; - Second case : like the first but the handshake starts after a few minutes; - Third case : the handshake goes fine but the "OK" server banner is never sent (no response to commands); - Fourth case : the greeting banner is received but dovecot will never answer. The configuration file is almost identical to the default and SSL certificate is not the autogenerated one. Log files do not show dying process. I've searched the ML archive for SSL issues but not found related bug. Does anyone use the Backport.org package of Dovecot ? I'm trying to replace procmail with deliver but I'm having problems with the group part of things. I keep getting: Aug 29 16:44:19 dingbat deliver(mimo): open(/var/mail/.temp.dingbat.3969.d1689935a308e0dd) failed: Permission denied Aug 29 16:44:19 dingbat deliver(mimo): file_lock_dotlock() failed with mbox file /var/mail/mimo: Permission denied My primary group is mimo and I think it's trying to use that. I changed it to mail and things work. But I do not want all my users to have a primary group mail. Is there a way I can force deliver to use group mail as group and ignore the per user gid? I tried chmod 6755 /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver but no change. This is on debian/etch, help appreciated.... mimo

Hi folks, My institute's mail server was upgraded to RHEL5 with dovecot 1.0-2.1rc5 recently. And it uses PAM authentication which points to LDAP server. For various reasons I want to use deliver with Postfix and Courier-IMAP, and it seems to work fine except for one thing: deliver creates some dovecot.* index files that Courier never uses (and I assume deliver doesn't need them) Is there a way to prevent that? Thanks, Martin

Hi, please have a look at the attached patch for dovecot-1.0.3 These patch modifies ssl_proxy_get_peer_name() to use the NID_x500UniqueIdentifier as username instead of NID_commonName. The reason is, that the Common Name doesn't have to be unique for the whole mailserver. Example; in germany a lot of people got the first name "Andreas" and the last name "Schulz". Therefore a lot of certificates exists with subjects like this: C=DE,O=ABC,CN=Andreas Schulz/emailAddress=andreas.schulz(a)abc.de C=DE,O=DEF,CN=Andreas Schulz/emailAddress=andreas.schulz(a)def.de ... dovecot couldn't distinguish between these users. So we decide to use certificates with an X509v3 extension NID_x500UniqueIdentifier which allows to extend the subject by an unique ID, e.g. the unix-uid or a database unique key. The new certificates may look like this: C=DE,O=ABC,CN=Andreas Schulz/emailAddress=andreas.schulz(a)abc.de/x500UniqueIdentifier=user1 C=DE,O=DEF,CN=Andreas Schulz/emailAddress=andreas.schulz(a)def.de/x500UniqueIdentifier=user2 With the attached patch the user is taken from this extension and e.g. with userdb=ldap you can use the filter string user_filter = (&(objectClass=posixAccount)(uid=%u)) A good solution to use booth, the common name and the UniqueIdentifier is to extend settings like ssl_username_from_cert = no | yes | cn | uid where "yes" is similar to "cn". [Dovecot] Server Timed Out: Outlook Express

Hi all, We just started running Dovecot this fall here on campus v 1.0. I've started getting some trouble reports from users. An Outlook Express users reported seeing the "Server has not responded in 60 seconds" messages. Waiting longer doesn't help, he has to stop/start Outlook Express to get connected again. Also have a Thunderbird user who is seeing that type of behavior first thing in the morning after being logged in all night. He has to stop/restart Thunderbird. Also, have had some reports of "disconnected" showing up on the Outlook2007 status bar. I've looked at the Dovecot log, and don't see any errors. I do see lots of "Disconnected", "Disconnected in IDLE" and "Disconnected: Logged Out". These last two seem normal, if I just see "Disconnected" is that a flag that we're losing connections abnormally? I know version 1.0.3 is out. I've looked at the changes, and the only one I can see that might be related to what we are seeing is the IDLE commmand fix. Was hoping for some advice on whether upgrading might resolve these issue. Hi Timo, some time ago (2007-03-24 and following) I asked whether it was intended that Dovecot deliver bounces mails (by terminating with status 89) if the deliver version is older than the rest of the dovecot installation. [Dovecot] processing Dovecot maildirs with shell scripts

Hello, I have a postfix server which uses procmail as its delivery agent to deliver incoming messages to several maildirs. For several reasons, not really relevant here, I need to process/refilter/sort again the content of these mailboxes before delivering the messages to the _other_ maildirs which Dovecot sees and serves to local or remote imap users. Basically, I need to write some shell scripts that, from cron jobs, regularly do this: foreach file in some_incoming_mailbox/new/ do #process the file and/or set some variable according to its content delete the file or mv it to some_other_maildir/new/ where the actual action and value of some_other_maildir is set every time by the "process the file" part of the script. The part that I still miss is guidelines to do these things safely, that is without losing or corrupting messages or doing anything else that would confuse dovecot. For example, under which conditions it is sure to move or delete (the Unix way, with mv or rm) a message from mailbox1/new/ to mailbox2/new, when the latter is served via dovecot to remote users? What is advisable and most efficient? Use locks (how?), only work on file which are at least one minute old? Should I move the messages to tmp instead of new? What else? Tips or pointers about this are very welcome. Ciao, Marco

At startup i get the message: Unknown dict module: db As far as i understood i have to compile the backend manually an copy it into tho appropirate place. But how can i do this ? Hi, Whitbox Linux 3 (RHEL) Dovecot 1.0.rc29 Using NFS From time to time does all mail get re-downloaded to Thunderbird. I would believe this has something to do with an index problem. I upgraded to 1.0 a few months ago but that didn't work well so I installed version 1.0.rc29 which worked better but we still get this problem from time to time. Is there any way to pass things like "quota=" for the quota plugin to the deliver LDA via the command line or as an environment variable or whatever? I'm a bit unclear on these - give me a moment to ramble on. I should mention I'm using version 1.0.3, my primary backend is LDAP, and I do NOT want to store user mail folders in my LDAP directory. I currently have the following: default_mail_env = maildir:/var/mail/%d/%n passdb ldap { args = /etc/dovecot/dovecot-ldap.conf } # Instructions for deliver state a userdb is still required if using prefetch userdb ldap { args = /etc/dovecot/dovecot-ldap.conf } userdb prefetch { } My dovecot-ldap.conf is pretty simple - the trimmed version is: hosts = localhost auth_bind = no user_attrs = %d/%n=mail user_filter = (mail=%u) pass_attrs = (&(userPassword=password)(mail=%u)) user_global_uid = 5000 user_global_gid = 8 I recognize that the pass_attrs is incorrect for a prefetch config - but I couldn't get it to work. My mail folder structure is /var/mail/domain/username. If, under 1.0.3, I can't use the %d/%n variables to build the user/home/mail parameters in the LDAP config, can I do it in the configuration stanza? [Dovecot] Timeout while waiting for lock for transaction log file

I have a user that gets client timeout errors when he tries to delete/clean up his massive "Spam" folder (many thousands of mail messages). He uses Thunderbird and has it configured to use "Move to Trash" when he deletes messages. Ok, here's one for the idiot file. I just installed dovecot-1.0.4 on my personal system for testing, a system which has to be the simplest dovecot configuration possible. deliver is barking about something with which version 1.0.3 has no problem. I looked over the wiki, googled, and see nothing wrong. I've started running dovecot on my server under Fedora 7, to act as an IMAPS server for kmail. 1. I see my email fine on my laptop in an IMAPS account, but it doesn't get updated - I mean I don't get any new email - until I run kmail on my server. This isn't a great problem, as I am always logged to the server with ssh, and I just start kmail and stop it after a few minutes. Then I run kmail on my laptop, and the new mail is there. But I assume this is not the intended system? 2. I opted (probably mistakenly) to set ~/Mail/inbox/ as my base IMAPS directory on my server. I'd like to change this to ~/Maildir (I use maildir folders). Is it relatively easy to do this? I tried copying my email to ~/Maildir/ and changing the setting in /etc/dovecot.conf (and restarting dovecot), but for some reason I could not see the email on my laptop. Any advice or suggestions gratefully received.

I'm switching from a pop3 only dovecot install to a pop3/imap install and I'm wondering how many connections every 100 'normal' imap users might have/keep open? I'm wondering if I need to tweak any o/s related things, like time_wait, etc. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ken A.

All I want is to be able to access the mail, with the same my "virtual_uid_maps = static:501"(set in my postfix main.cf) All of these say it can be done, but how do I do it? Hi, I may be wrong, but I suspect a bug in dovecot deliver when using quotas. I've put some mails into a mailbox and then reduced the quota, to have the mailbox be over quota - here's the quota informaiton: [...] 2 getquotaroot INBOX * QUOTAROOT "INBOX" "" * QUOTA "" (STORAGE 880 5) 2 OK Getquotaroot completed. The wiki <http://wiki.dovecot.org/PasswordDatabase/ExtraFields/Proxy> page says this: "The connections created to the destination server can't be TLS/SSL encrypted.". Hrmm. Right now, with perdition, I'm forcing the use of STARTTLS on the internal connections. I'd just as soon get rid of perdition (to have one less moving part in my architecture), but I need the secure connections. Is there a way to configure dovecot's internal proxy connections to use STARTTLS or some other SSL/TLS level of security? How can I use sieve to move bounces and non delivery reports (i.e. anything with an empty envelope from) to a special mailbox? I placed this snippet at the start of my sieve script require ["envelope", "fileinto"]; if envelope :is "from" "" { fileinto "INBOX.Reports"; stop; } But mails are not moved to the reports mailbox, and they are still processed by the rest of the script.

Dovecot has been working fine for months. We are using 1.0. Come in to work today and dovecot quit working POP3 and IMAP. I restarted the service and everything started working except IMAP? We use Dovecot as an authentication method for outgoing mail and it works. I can't telnet to myhostname.com 143, Squirrelmail will NOT work either. Where is a good place to start looking for signs of the problem. When we restart we get no errors, which is strange? K

The imapd spec has a provision for an alert pop-up of any ASCII text message contained in /etc/imapd.alert on the IMAP server. Can I assume this is implemented on DC? Hi all, I'm having trouble getting a new Postfix/Dovecot server up and running. I'm trying to run v1.0.3, using MySQL tables setup list postfix admin. This is a RHEL5 server. Hi guys. I installed dovecot 1.0.3 with sieve plugin. It looks like sieve is loaded fine by dovecot [1]. I set up dovecot to use sieve globally: protocol lda { mail_plugins = cmusieve quota sieve_global_dir = /usr/local/etc/sieve/Junk ..... } And created a sieve file which is supposed to move all the Spam marked by dspam to users's Junk folder (listed as Junk in the subscriptions file) : require ["fileinto"]; # Move spam to Junk folder if header :contains ["X-DSPAM-Result:"] "Spam" { fileinto "Junk"; # Stop here so that we do not reply on spams stop; } I also set up postfix to use pipe mail through dovecot: mailbox_command = /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver The problem is dovecot seems to be ignoring my sieve rule and delivers emails directly to INBOX. Any idea how to fix that? I need to get a hand on the 'usual size of an index' to do some hard disk sizing. Is that possible at all? I know their size depends a lot on what the clients index. Those clients will mostly be Outlook and Thunderbird and they will be doing more POP than IMAP if that helps to bring it down to some estimation. I realize it's hard to be precise about this, but does anyone have a feel or rule of thumb for a couple of aspects of indexing overhead? 1. Proportionally, how much space does it take for all 4 files? If I want to give my users a quota of 100 MB for messages, how much real space should I plan for so that I won't run out of space for indexing? 2. What's the overhead in rebuilding index files? Suppose I use an LDA other than dovecot, so at least the INBOX index is frequently getting out of date. Does it cost much (in CPU, memory, and disk IO) to rebuild the index files? (I'm using maildir.)

The most important features for me is that a) no mails are lost / left out silently and b) the porgram is able to sync the complete mailbox including all folders without just giving up in the middle of the transfer. If it's somehow possible, I'd like to migrate directly from one IMAP account to the other, without running the synchronizer on one of the servers and without accessing one of the Maildirs directly. I simply want to migrate my existing IMAP account from one Dovecot server (running 1.0beta5) to a new one (running 1.0rc15, as that's the version in Debian stable). Actually, a large part of the mailbox including most / all folders is already present on both servers, but I recently noticed that a few thousand mails are still missing. The current mailbox state is the result of two earlier (obviously incomplete :-( ) migrations a few months ago, from the original Dovecot 1.0beta5 server to a Cyrus server, and - shortly thereafter - from there on to the currently used Dovecot 1.0rc15. So far I've tried offlineimap, imapsync and mailsync, none of which seems to be really usuable. :-( The current state with the incomplete mailbox was caused by mailsync. When I did the first two migrations, mailsync looked like the only program which worked, but seems to have "forgotten" the missing messages. Another extremely suspicious thing is that mailsync reports "phantom changes" if run again immediately after synching a folder and will start to delete and copy / "sync" dozends of messages even if none of the folders actually changed after synching. I've read the name "imapsync" on this list several times, but I just tried it and just tried version 1.219. It happily starts synching the mailboxes and copying messages, but stops after partially synching the first folder - it simply exists, leaving no informational or error message whatsoever... Restarting imapsync will not help, it will appear to start synching the first folder again, but silently exit without doing anything. Some of you seem to use imapsync as a migration tool for production systems, how do you cope with these situations and how do you ensure a mailboxs' migration actually completed successfully? As you're probably not playing Roulette with your customers' or companie's eMails, I'm interested in your receipts to successfully use imapsync myself. As the third application I tried offlineimap (4.0.x-branch). During the migration a few months ago offlineimap (4.0.16 IIRC, synching from a Maildir to a remote IMAP account) was unusuable as it continuously and reproducibly threw exceptions at me during syncing obviously caused by specific messages in the accounts. Unfortunately, I wasn't able ti get any successful help on the offlineimap mailing list this time. :-( Now, synching from one IMAP account to another, specifiying the new server as the "local" account, offlineimap did not throw exceptions caused by mail messages so far, but it's performance is unusuable. It seems to use the "local" IMAP account on my target sevrer in a way which causes Dovecot to utilize all CPU power, copying one message every 10 to 20 seconds - this way, a sync would take ages and frequently aborts because of connection problems. The target server is an Athlon64 3700+ machine... So, does anyone have any pratical solution on how to migrate one IMAP mailbox to another? Hi all, I posted this question in the Postfix users mailing list as well - I'm not sure if this is Dovecot or Postfix related. Our old system which we migrated off of was an AIX 5.2 machine running most recent Postfix and mbox format with UW-IMAP. We've migrated to most recent Postfix, using Maildir and Dovecot v1. After we used mb2md to migrate over all our customers, some of our customers have called in to let us know they are receiving duplicate e-mails. It's not happening to everyone, it's random (well, I'm sure it's not really random, I haven't found the issue yet). I don't even know where to start. I looked at the logs, but everything looks fine. How can I troubleshoot something like this? Have any of you experienced the same issue? Thanks in advance.

Hello dovecot users, I have updated the MANAGESIEVE patch to fix a recently reported problem. This is a patch against the latest stable release 1.0.3. It currently won't compile with 1.1 due to significant changes in the master code. Change Log V7 ------------- - Robin Breathe indicated that the regex capability was missing in the server's SIEVE listing. It turns out I forgot to make arrangements for setting ENABLE_REGEX in the cmu libsieve sources, so the regex extension was not compiled in. I copied the configure.in section regarding ENABLE_REGEX from dovecot-sieve-1.0.2 and that fixed the problem. This patch still includes (yet another) instance of the CMU Sieve source, as explained in one of my previous e-mails (http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006-July/015016.html) The patch can be downloaded at: http://sinas.rename-it.nl/~sirius/dovecot-1.0.3-MANAGESIEVE-v7.diff.gz The README.managesieve is located in the root of the dovecot source tree after applying the patch. Hi, one user of my imap server just deleted a whole folder, blame thunderbird I have the server disk and running Stellar Info for deleted files recovery. My cuestion is about how dovecot deleted an imap Maildir folder? The imap client is configured to move the deleted mails to the Trash folder, so I think dovecot would delete every Maildir email after successfully moved it. In the case a folder is deleted, is something special dovecot does to the email? Or it just run the unlink() function? In the case of compacting a folder, I think thats just a client side action. Found a problem with dovecot 1.0.3 and mysql authentication I got a problem with escaping of mysql table names. Usually, when a mysql table name has some special character (in my case there is a table beginning with the # character) one has to put into these special quotes --- ` ---; others like ' oder " are not recognized. But dovecot somehow doesn't allow me to do that. After switchting auth_verbose to true I get entries in /var/log/messages stating: Password query failed: Incorrect table name ' ' Regards, XhE

After the user presented a client certificate and that certificate was verified, no password-based authentication should be necessary anymore. Is this currently possible? Trying to do a little (cosmetic) tweak to my configuration and just don't seem to be able to come up with a set of options that works. My POP/IMAP configuration is working just fine in terms of mail retrieval, etc. What I'm seeing in the logs now is... Aug 13 18:15:17 test2 dovecot: pop3-login: Login: user=<support>, method=PLAIN, rip=10.11.12.12, lip=10.11.12.13 I would prefer (for ease of troubleshooting) to have "user=<support(a)realm.com>" appear in the logs instead, to save having to figure the realm from the IP value. Have played around with various combinations of %u, %n and %d and all I seem to be able to accomplish is break the working part of the config. I'm sure the answer is probably something simple, or some combination I haven't tried... but it's certainly escaping me at the moment. The relevant (I think) part of my config follows. Hi there, I found that with an IMAP command like <unique-leader> STORE 1 +FLAGS (testflag) I can set arbitrary flags on mails through the dovecot IMAP daemon. This rules. Now I wonder, however, how I can remove those flags, which become properties of the folder, really. For instance, after the above, SELECT on the containing folder gives: * FLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft testflag) * OK [PERMANENTFLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft testflag \*)] Flags permitted. Even if I remove the flag from all messages or even delete all messages in the folder, the flag stays on the folder. Is there an IMAP way of removing flags from a folder? Also, does someone know where I can find specification on what characters are allowed for keywords? RFC 3501 is strangely quiet on this, or I am blind. Hello all, While configuring the latest stable version of Dovecot (1.0.3), I've noticed that "deliver" always uses the quota arguments found in the configuration file, completely ignoring what userdb sends to it through the authentication service. This doesn't happen in the previous version I was used (1.0.rc15, comes with Debian "etch"). After digging a little into the code, I've found that "expand_envs" is being called after "auth_client_put_user_env", thus clobbering the "QUOTA" environment variable. Hello, I have some doubts about max_mail_process option on dovecot.conf. When I set to 3, only 2 clients can be logged in at the same time. when I set it to 2, only 1 clients can be logged in. Why is the maximum number of concurrent clients is always 1 less than max_mail_process? Is any other process is also counted as mail_process other than imap and pop3? Tony

Hi, I'm setting up our new mail system using dovecot as mailbox server. As our goal is to have many many small redundant (virtual) servers as components, for example a mailhub (just relaying mail) and a frontend smtp server (just accepting or denying mail in the first place and then forwarding it to the mailhub), etc. I want to run Dovecot on a different server than the main MTAs. The mailbox server is the only service that cannot be made redundant in an easy way (the servers don't have common storage and we can't add that easily), thus I prefer not to have it on the same server as the relay. Is there a best practice to do that? My current ideas are either to implement a stripped-down Postfix in the Dovecot server or to use some qpsmtpd setup there, both just to call the Dovecot delivery program. SMTP will be the communication protocol for the components except dovecot. (e.g. the virus scanner will be implemented as SMTP proxy). [Dovecot] Log Message Disconnected: Disconnected

We just started running Dovecot this summer at our campus. Overall things have gone very well, and performance have improved since moving off of U of Wash. We have run into an issue with a user running Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 on Solaris. He is seeing a very long response time (20mins+) on his first mailbox selection each morning when he comes into work. I looked at the Dovecot log, and the only think I can see that might be a bit out of the ordinary is two Disconnected messages that happen about 30 minutes apart each morning: Aug 17 04:54:08 host dovecot: IMAP(uname): Disconnected: Disconnected Aug 17 05:24:09 host dovecot: IMAP(uname): Disconnected: Disconnected The disconnected messages for other users say "Disconnected: Logged Out". I don't know for sure if these messages are related to his problem. Can anyone can shed some light on why Dovecot might indicate a "double disconnect"? [Dovecot] Enabling IMAP namespaces for existing folders

Hi. We're using dovecot 1.0.3 with a very very simple setup; specifically, there are no namespaces defined. Users have been puttering away happily for many months, creating subfolders and whatnot with (almost) zero problems. We'd like to start taking advantage of shared IMAP folders. I've been reading over the dovecot wiki and have only one question that I don't see documented. The docs point out that if we define any namespaces, we must also explicitly define the private previously-default one. My question is: are there any migration or transition steps that must be taken there? Will clients' configuration need to be modified in any way when, e.g., their existing IMAP folders suddenly become part of a private namespace? Thanks for the newbie help. -- Phil Edwards

Hi, i have just migrated from courier-imap to dovecot. im using it with vpopmail, the pop service is working ok but the imap service for imp webmail is not writing the quota information to the maildirsize file, as recommended in the docs, i have this in dovecot.conf : plugin { # Quota plugin. Multiple backends are supported: # dirsize: Find and sum all the files found from mail directory. # Extremely SLOW with Maildir. It'll eat your CPU and disk I/O. # dict: Keep quota stored in dictionary (eg. SQL) # maildir: Maildir++ quota # fs: Read-only support for filesystem quota quota = maildir } This only happend with imp/imap, there is not problem using a pop client Regards,

[Dovecot] UW-IMAP to Dovecot conversion - How to migrate the folders?

Hi all, I've read so much information on this that I'm a little confused as to what to follow. Here's what's going on: We just migrated away from our AIX machines which were running Postfix and UW-IMAP. We're now running Postfix with Dovecot. I already converted everyone's mbox file to maildir, but now I'm having a little troubles with how to exactly populate their IMAP folders. People are saying they cannot see their folders. These 'folders' they are talking about can be found in their /home directory. So far I understand that I need to somehow populate the /home/USERNAME/Maildir/subscriptions file with the items located in /home/USERNAME/.mailboxlist and then I don't know what to do from there. I don't know if I need to incorporate a Dovecot plugin, or if there is a script I can run to do this for me. Since this is a live server, I would prefer to test on a single account before I run a plugin that would effect all users globally. Any help would be very appreciated - thanks in advance! Patrick

Dear all, I'm running a linuxbox with ' Dovecot<->Exim<->horde/IMP<-> Mysql ', this is a very good combination and works excellent for the system users. Now I want to change the configuration and authenticate against the mysql database from horde. That way it is much easy for me to create (virtual) mail users. I also want to use the mail alias of the horde users for Exim and Dovecot. My questions are; is it possible to use the horde mysql database for this? And is it also possible for the mail alias of horde? If this is possible, is there a howto of this configuration? If I copy message files (from a command prompt) will dovecot get upset or confused? Do I need to delete index files or anything like that? I ask because I need to restore some messages from a backup, but not restore the entire maildir. I tried some the other day as a test, but the user is saying that they didn't appear. Hi, I am using Postfix and Dovecot. I have set up backup_mailbox(a)domain.tld, which gets mail copies from user1(a)domain.tld user2(a)domain.tld user3(a)domain.tld, the copy option is set in postfix recipient_bcc_maps = path_to_file_recipient_bcc. In recipient_bcc file I have: user1(a)domain.tld backup_mailbox(a)domain.tld user2(a)domain.tld backup_mailbox(a)domain.tld user3(a)domain.tld backup_mailbox(a)domain.tld Postfix does the job and copies user1, user2, user3 emails to backup_mailbox. But I also want to filter mails in backup_mailbox and to put user1 mails to USER1 folder in backup_mailbox, user2 mails to USER2 folder in backup_mailbox and so on. How this is possible? I made an entry in subscriptions file of user1, user2, user3. Now I have folders .user1, .user2, user3 in backup_mailbox folder and I can also see these folders through webmail client (squirrelmail), but how do I put email copy which comes from user1(a)domain.tld to backup_mailbox(a)domain.tld to go not to main folder of backup_mailbox but to USER1 folder in backup_mailbox folder. It's then accessed only when and where needed. It probably does access the whole file though. This is because all the cached data for messages are stored next to each others. So now that your client fetches only INTERNALDATE it doesn't really need to read much, but because mmaped pages are read 4kB at a time, it practically reads the whole file. Perhaps this could use some work in future too, so that fields that are accessed together are stored in cache file close together. But then if multiple clients are used, there can be conflicting access patterns, and what's good for one client would be bad for another. Data could also be duplicated to reduce disk reads for different access patterns, but that comes at the cost of disk space..

[Dovecot] Dovecot fails almost every 20 minutes exactly

Hi all, We just set up our new mail servers using Postfix and Dovecot. We have implemented a load balanced solution to where our two mail servers have a common NFS share. Everything is working great. Everything but Dovecot for the most part. In testing, Dovecot was great. Now that we're in the production environment, we've noticed that every 20 minutes, Dovecot will stop running. But it gets even weirder - it appears that Machine A will stop, then 20 mins later after we issue a 'service dovecot restart', Machine B will stop. Then the whole process starts over when we restart Dovecot on Machine B. I can't see anything out of the ordinary in the log files either. I'm at a loss as to what's going on. [Dovecot] Dovecot IDLE bandwidth usage

Hi list, I just recently discovered the IMAP IDLE command and tried it out with my Dovecot server. It seems to work fine and all, but it seems to be using quite a deal of bandwidth, because of the "* OK Still here" messages sent by the server at two minute intervals. I would argue that is a bit of a problem when using the IDLE command for "Push mail" on a mobile phone. I don't know exactly what parts of the packets that mobile carriers collect payment for, but the Ethernet bandwidth consumed by one such message is 149 bytes (83 bytes for the message itself, and 66 bytes for the TCP ACK from the client). At two minute intervals, that becomes over 100 KB per day, and over 3 MB per month. At GRPS rates typical here in Sweden, that becomes about 5-7 USD per month. That might not seem tremendously much, but seeing how it is what takes up the vast majority of the IMAP bandwidth, it is still quite annoying. Are those messages really necessary? I mean, Dovecot still times out after half an hour if the client doesn't "finish" the IDLE command and re-issues it, right? (Coincidentally, I would like to argue that it would be better not to time out at all during an IDLE command and just turn on TCP keepalives instead, but that is the minor issue here) I'll apologize in advance if this is already a tunable option, but I haven't found anything about it in the configuration file. [Dovecot] MANAGESIEVE patch v6 for dovecot 1.0.3

Hello dovecot users, I have updated the MANAGESIEVE patch to (hopefully) fix the compilation issues reported by Robin Breathe. This is a patch against the latest stable release 1.0.3. It currently won't compile with 1.1 due to significant changes in the master code. Change Log V6 ------------- - Corked the client output stream while producing the capability greeting and on other some other occasions as well. Some naive client implementations expect to receive this as a single tcp frame and it is a good practice to do so anyway. Using this change the Thunderbird sieve extension (v0.1.1) seemed to work. However, scripts larger than a tcp frame still caused failures. All these issues are fixed in the latest version of the sieve add-on (currently v0.1.4). - Cleaned up the new proxy source. My editor made the indentation a complete mess in terms of TABs vs spaces. - Added TRYLATER response codes to BYE and NO messages where appropriate. - Recopied the libsieve library into this patch to incorporate any changes that were made (only sieve-cmu.c still needs to be compared to the old cmu-sieve.c). This also solves the __attribute__((unused)) GCC dependencies. These were fixed long ago by Timo.... the code duplication beast strikes again. (Will have to do this again for dovecot 1.1) - Removed spurious return value from void function in src/lib-sieve/sieve-implementation.c as reported by Robin Breathe. GCC fails to report these issues. The function involved is currently not used and serves only as an example on how dovecot could support multiple sieve back-ends... This patch still includes (yet another) instance of the CMU Sieve source, as explained in one of my previous e-mails (http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006-July/015016.html) The patch can be downloaded at: http://sinas.rename-it.nl/~sirius/dovecot-1.0.3-MANAGESIEVE-v6.diff.gz The README.managesieve is located in the root of the dovecot source tree after applying the patch. Hi all, We're migrating off our current mail server with runs postfix and imapd on an AIX machine to Postfix and Dovecot running linux. Our customers have a lot of IMAP folders with folders they configured, which are currently located in their /home directory on the current mail server. The new mail server will have them at the same location. How do I configure Dovecot so that when a customer connects via IMAP using their favorite e-mail client, that the folders will be there? I have problem with quota limit settings for "deliver" - global plugin settings overrides userdb quota setting !!! imap and pop3 works fine. Quota limit for user is set to "quota=maildir:ignore=Kosz:storage=512". And "maildirsize" file in user's mail_location contains "524288S" line - good. I've read similar post about such an issue, but have not seen any posted solutions. I have a clean install of Solaris 10 running a Sunfire v440 w/postfix. I am using dovecote solely for SMTP authentication, and it is working just fine except while running top I constantly see: 548 root 1 30 0 5240K 3416K run 522:51 49.45% dovecot-auth The process never crashes, nor are there any errors. I ran a test devel box with an almost identical setup of postfix and dovecot on Solaris 9 (V240) and the functionality is identical, but with no high CPU usage. [Dovecot] dovecot notifying a database about total number of messages.

Hello, in addition to our mail system, we have some other systems which needs to know how many messages, and how many unread messages, a user has in his/her inbox (maildir). Currently, we have a mod_perl script which takes a mail address as input, and then traverses the maildir, and outputs the number of unread messages. Our challenge is that the maildirs are located on a SAN, and traversing a maildir is slow. We currently have more than 100 requests pr. second, which we handle with caching, and spreading the load across different servers. I'm looking into the possibility of either using dovecots index files, or having dovecot update a database with total number of messages/number of unread messages. Question: 1) if I'm using perl, is there any way I can read in the information in the index files? Is the data formatted in some standarized way, so that I can parse it, or use a module which read in the data? (if I can read the indexes in wrapper scripts to imap/pop/deliver, then I could probably update a database with the information) 2) how would you proceed, if the aim is to end up with dovecot notifying a database regarding the number of messages, and unread messages? -- Erland Nylend

[Dovecot] ssh tunneling and maildir

Hello everyone, please keep my CC'd, I'm not on the list. I've been using dovecot happily via an ssh tunnel. My mutt is configured to use IMAP, and the tunnel is as follows in my muttrc: set tunnel="ssh -q mymailhost 'MBOX_LOCKS=fcntl MAIL=/home/jlbec/mail /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap'" It should be pretty obvious that this logs into mymailhost as me (via SSH keyauth) and runs /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap directly as a foreground process. Setting MAIL, it points dovecot imap to my mbox folders. dovecot imap speaks imap over stdin/out, this goes over the ssh to mutt. It works great. Really great. I don't need root access at all, the server isn't running dovecot globally, and I get IMAP through firewalls if I can ssh through a firewall/vpn. I'm using mbox and fcntl, so my MTA has no trouble working in concert. However, this doesn't appear to be documented anywhere. A friend showed it to me, and I don't even remember who that was. I'm now considering changing to maildir folders. I figure dovecot imap might figure out a folder is maildir when stat says S_IFDIR, but without documentation, I can't figure out how to tell dovecot imap to use maildir when I create a folder. I'm also unsure how this will interact with my MTA. For the latter, I'm thinking I just need to configure my MTA to use dovecot's deliver program. For the former, is there some magic environment variable I need to add to my tunnel command line? HI all, Some time ago I've user(a)domain.com in maildir mailbox with their own mails, their folders, subfolders, indexes files.. etc My server was missconfigured and I've rebuilded all SMTP; I've recreated all the mailboxes with same names that before. Of course, the problem is the content of these mailboxes it's not the same. So, the idea is: add all the contento from user(a)domain.com (old) mailbox to user(a)domain.com (new) mailbox. because I have got a complete copy of (old) mailboxes and their content. ¿How can I do it?

Some people had this problem when giving some superoptimization flags with Sun Studio. Did you do that? -Timo No I did not use any optimization. And Dave, I took what you said and just tried both dovecot-1.0.2 dovecot-1.0.rc29 and have the same exact results :(

Hello, I'm configurating dovecot 1.0.3 on debian etch. While trying to set public folders, y decided to have the index and control files on the users homes. those homes are mounted by nfs, with disabled access to root. Is there any workaround to make dovecot behave the way I'd liked? [Dovecot] ANY password option

Hi We sometimes migrate mailboxes over to one of our mail servers which has a very handy feature called 'ANY password'. This will allow access to a mailbox using the given username and disregard checking for the password. This is a useful feature for many reasons. Is there a possibility Dovecot could have such a a feature or is there a workaround already. Thanks Master

[Dovecot] Moving a mail between folders and post-processing ?

Hi, Within Dovecot is there a way of spotting a change to a folder and running a post-processing script on the email that was moved ? I'm specifically after a way of seeing either an email entering or leaving a folder - preferably running a different post-process script depending on the direction. Essentially if an email enters or is moved out of a 'spam' folder I'd like to mark it as 'spam'/'ham' in the Bayesian filters respectively. Is there any such mechanism, or should I start looking at how to write a plugin to achieve this ? If it's the plugin route is there any good documentation on the plugin APIs etc ? [Dovecot] MANAGESIEVE patch v5 for dovecot 1.0.2

Hello dovecot users, I have finally updated the MANAGESIEVE patch to fix the currently known small problems with the protocol implementation. Also, I included a proxy implementation based on imap-proxy.c. This patch is designed for dovecot release 1.0.2 and it will not apply cleanly to the 1.1 versions yet. Change Log V5 ------------- - Applied patch by Uldis Pakuls to fix master_dump_settings bug - Added some compilation/installation info to the README - Moved README to source tree's root as README.managesieve - Fixed minor error handling bug in sieve_storage.c with respect to a missing root directory. - Now sieve capabilities are reported as they are specified by the implementing library and not in forced upper case. The sieve RFC now explicitly states that sieve capability identifiers are case-sensitive. This broke compatibility with SquirrelMail/Avelsieve. - Disabled ANONYMOUS login entirely until proper support is implemented. V4 claimed to do so as well, but in fact it only stopped announcing it. - Implemented managesieve-proxy. It is not so much a clean copy of imap-proxy, since the managesieve greeting is much more complex and requires parsing. Configuration is identical to imap-proxy. This seems to be a little under-documented however (http://wiki.dovecot.org/PasswordDatabase/ExtraFields) This patch still includes (yet another) instance of the CMU Sieve source, as explained in one of my previous e-mails (http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006-July/015016.html) Current plans include merging src/lib-managesieve with src/lib-imap, updating the patch for dovecot-1.1 and fixing any problems you might find. Hello list, I'm using dovecot 1.0.2 on OpenBSD 4.1. About every month, dovecot will just stall, without any error messages. The processes are still running, the network ports are open, but the login just hangs. [Dovecot] use of deliver from procmail advisable?

Hi list, I understand that dovecot's deliver does a little more than deliver: it also updates the dovecot metadata stored with each Maildir. Thus, if I use deliver as opposed to procmail's internal Maildir delivery, it seems that the IMAP server later has less work to do since the metadata is can use are up to date. Doing this, however, incurs an extra process for each mail delivered. I thus wonder whether the two balance each other out, or whether there is a strong difference. Tried it both with users using mbox (where this would be a filesystem directory) and maildir. Failed everytime because of a test which rejects folder names that end with MAILDIR_FS_SEP. Looks like the above bit of code is supposed to catch these, make a note of the fact that the client wants a directory, and strip off that trailing separator. In fact, it does this in the case of 'full_mailbox'. However, for 'mailbox' (it seems to me) the code is incorrect as its using the len-1 which is the length of 'full_mailbox', not 'mailbox'. This means that when 'mailbox' and 'full_mailbox' are the same length--that is, for the default namespace (no prefix), it happens to work. However, in any other namespace, it won't, as 'full_mailbox' will always be longer then 'mailbox' if there is a ns prefix, and hence that trailing separator won't be trimmed. (As a matter of fact, in the unlikely instance that the prefix is a single character this will trim the null character from 'mailbox', which probably isn't a good thing.) So. Am I missing something, or crazy, or is this really a bug? Thanks, -Brian
