I just tried out 1.0beta7 and erased all my indexes and with fts and fts_squat enabled, and when I SEARCH TEXT in Dovecot, it does *not* find messages where the thing I SEARCH for appear only in the From: header. [Dovecot] Dovecot I/O scheduling (all versions)

I have experienced this on all versions of Dovecot that Ive used (1.0 - 1.1b6) using IMAP (its difficult to test if its also there with POP3). What I see is that if there is a peak in disk usage at the time of a specific request that requests stalls. The saturation of disk I/O is momentary but when its done (maybe after one or two seconds) Dovecot still waits for its I/O operation instead of continuing as soon as resources are available. Now, I would expect Dovecot to only wait until there are resources available and not stall for at long time (sometimes it stalls for like 10 seconds, and sometimes completely). This could be OS specific (Im using ZFS and Solaris 10 on Sparc) but it may also be due to the way dovecot is programmed. Theres always plenty of RAM and CPU available so thats not whats causing troubles. Is anyone else familiar with this issue? Regards, Mikkel

This worked at some point, so I'm not sure what I did to break it. I'll figure it out later. - Apparently for some use cases v1.1 is still slower (about 2x) than v1.0. Probably more or less specific to NFS + mmap_disable=yes.

[Dovecot] imaptest update

http://dovecot.org/tools/imaptest.c now keeps track of messages' metadata and complains if they change. It relies on Message-ID: header being unique in the source mailbox, otherwise it'll give bogus errors. I might fix that some day. I changed the code from using simple line-based parsing to Dovecot's imap-parser code. Unfortunately it looks like it's pretty slow. At least I'm pretty sure imaptest didn't take more than a few % of CPU before, while now it's showing 35% CPU usage.. I guess I'll have to profile it a bit to see what's eating the CPU. And yes, looks like it found a couple of bugs from Dovecot 1.1's MIME parsing (BODY/BODYSTRUCTURE replies change). That was actually why I wrote this code in the first place, I was trying to figure out how to reproduce a bug. I finally added beginnings of unit tests to Dovecot v1.1 code tree: http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot/rev/4e4a5d6bb2cb There are currently just a couple of tests implemented in test-lib (lib/ functions) and test-mail (lib-mail/ functions). I'm probably going to be pretty lazy at adding more of those tests, so if you've ever wanted to get your own code to Dovecot, now would be a great time to do it! :)

[Dovecot] IMAP - Empty attachments error

Hallo, I have one problem with the following configuration: - server: debian, dovecot used as an IMAP server, version 0.99.14. - stations: windows 2k/XP, mailer seamonky 1.1.4 Sometimes (let's say once in 20 attemptes) when saving attachments, they are empty (zero size files). Simple re-saving them helps. I was looking on mozilla forums if it's not a bug in SeaMonkey, which looked more likely to me, but didn't find anything, so I got the idea it could be a bug in dovecot. If someone saw this as well or have any ideas, I would really appreciate any help about it, as the error is really annoying. Thank you, Tom

Hi, I'm planning to use dovecot 1.0.5 for a webmail using a lot of user- defined tags. Recently, I just saw the limit of 26 of them when messages are stored in maildir format. This is an important issue for me, since I didn't find how to remove a flag from the dovecot-keywords database. Is there any plan to get rid of the keywords limit ? Or perhaps the new dbox storage format can fix that ? [Dovecot] Sent vs Sent Items

Religious wars about which is "best" aside - some mail clients seem to default to using "Sent Items" folder for saving sent mail, and others (many) default to "Sent". Seems that in the interests of compatibility and "doing the right thing" (tm) that a symlink from one folder to the other name would ensure that either default would give the same result (in a mixed client setup)? However, I wonder if someone has already written a plugin to do something simple like this? More generally I guess it's folder aliasing, so that Sent == Sent Items and perhaps there are also synonyms for Drafts/Templates? Anyone got any thoughts on this simple idea? (The prob with sym links is a) creating them at mailbox setup time and b) what happens when someone tries to delete the folder...) Cheers Ed W

Can dovecot's deliver deliver a mail to a certain subfolder within a user's mailbox? [Dovecot] truncated messages / attachments

I am currently running dovecot-1.1.beta6 (at least beta5 also had the problem) Retrieving some messages via IMAP gets them truncated and it also happens with retrieving attachments (message is HTML part of multipart-alternative, attachments are at least some PDF files). A user reported she is rather sure one of the messages was ok, before moving it to some other folder. In the filesystem the messages are there in full length. It happens with Outlook as well as with Thunderbird. We're using Maildir. After upgrading from beta5 to beta6 I have removed all dovecot.index* files of a folder with a defect message. This didn't make a difference. (Thought it could be related to some indexing problem). Any one else seeing this? \Maex -- Markus Stumpf

I guess the reason is that ZFS can now make use if it's caching capabilities. Delivers activity is completely random since it's impossible to load balance a connection based on the e-mail recipient, since only the ip is known at the load balancing point. Therefore I have fsync_disable=no for deliver. It's easy to force the clients using imap/pop3 to the same server since it can be based on the ip only. Therefore I have fsync_disable=yes for imap/pop3. This changed everything. Now there's a real performance gain upgrading from 1.0.x to 1.1.x. About two or three times less disk activity overall (reads were already improved) for both reads and writes. Thats pretty neat!

[Dovecot] Dovecot write activity (mostly 1.1.x)

Im experiencing write activity thats somewhat different from my previous qmail/courier-imap/Maildir setup. This more outspoken in v.1.1.x than v1.0.x (Im using Maildir). Write activity is about half that of read activity when measuring throughput. But when measuring operations its about 5-7 times as high (measured with zpool iostat on ZFS). I think this might be due to the many small updates to index and cache files. Anyway since writing is much more demanding to the disk than reads dovecots ends up being slower (only a little though) than my old qmail/courier-imap/Maildir was. And the old setup didnt even benefit from indexes like Dovecot does. (What I mean saying slower is that it can service fewer users before it hits the wall). Of course theres also lots of benefits using Dovecot. Im just wondering whether this was a thing that should be focused on for later versions (maybe writes could be grouped together or something like that). Dovecot is very cheap on the CPU side so the only real limit in terms of scalability is the storage. Regards, Mikkel

Sorry for spamming the list today:) Im getting a lot of these errors in the deliver log: deliver([recipient]): [date] Info: sieve runtime error: Fileinto: Generic Error deliver([recipient]): [date]:18 Error: sieve_execute_bytecode([path-to-sieve]) failed deliver([recipient]): [date] Info: msgid=<[msgid] >: save failed to [foldername]: Quota exceeded In this case the account is over the defined Dovecot quota limit. Dovecot knows what to do but sieve seems to throw its standard error message. Is there something wrong with Sieve or is it just that the error is misleading? This has been present in all v1.1.x I think (some changes was made to the error messages in b3 or b4 but believe this didnt change). Regards, Mikkel

hi, the current code has changed include linux/inotify.h to sys/inotify.h since 2006-01-17, but that won't work with inotify*.h as documented in the wiki. One has to either revert back to linux/inotify.h, or add #include <sys/inotify-syscalls.h> to both configure.in and src/lib/ioloop-notify-inotify.c Or, just symlink sys/inotify.h -> linux/inotify.h. Hi After upgrading to dovecot 1.0.7 I noticed that the actual username is no longer logged, but rather the system user (in my case 'vmail') under which my virtual set-up runs. Now I'm unable to see which virtual users log in. Any pointers on how to configure dovecot to log the actual username given during the IMAP dialogue would be appreciated. Hello dovecot users, I have updated the MANAGESIEVE patch to the latest stable version of dovecot (1.0.7). This new version also adds extra configuration settings to explicitly specify the location of the sieve storage and the active sieve script. Additionally, the README now more clearly explains the configuration of the daemon. It currently won't compile with 1.1 due to significant changes in the master code. However, because 1.1 now approaches a stable release, the next version is going to be updated to version 1.1. Change Log V8 ------------- + Fixed a few incompatibilities with 1.0.7 version. For instance, the "Logged in" message is now sent by the -login process and not by the managesieve daemon anymore. This caused a segfault every once in a while. + Probably fixed the settings problem reported by Steffen Kaiser regarding login_dir. 'dovecot -n' now reports correct results, but testing will show whether the whole problem is solved. + The managesieve daemon now accepts the sieve_storage and sieve configuration settings, so it is now possible to explicitly configure the location of the sieve storage and the active script respectively. The daemon still falls back to using the mail_location (MAIL) settings if nothing else is specified. + The cyrus timsieved does not use the + character in string literals and many clients have adopted to this behaviour. The latest managesieve (08) advises to accept a missing + from clients. The server should not send any + characters as well. This behavior is now implemented on the server. + Cleaned up sieve-storage.c: split up the sieve_storage_create function in various sub-functions for obtaining the various paths and directories. + Forced manual intervention if rescueing a non-symlink file at the active script path fails somehow. Previously, this presented the admin with a log message that it had just eaten the script, which is not very nice. + Restructured the README.managesieve file and added some more explanation with regard to the configuration of the daemon. This patch still includes (yet another) instance of the CMU Sieve source, as explained in one of my previous e-mails (http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006-July/015016.html) The patch can be downloaded at: http://sinas.rename-it.nl/~sirius/dovecot-1.0.7-MANAGESIEVE-v8.diff.gz The README.managesieve is located in the root of the dovecot source tree after applying the patch. Hello, there seems to be a bug in the authentication caching code when using it in combination with username_translation (using the current version 1.0.7 on FreeBSD 6). I've set username_translation to +@:@ to allow usernames of the form test+dom.ain or test:dom.ain (historical reasons force us....). If someone has a successful login using the username test(a)dom.ain, the subsequent authentication information is read from the cache, no matter which of the 3 possible usernames the client uses the next time. But if someone has a successful login using the username test+dom.ain, the following data has or has not been found in the cache: test+dom.ain: miss test(a)dom.ain: miss test:dom.ain: hit If the first username is test:dom.ain the behaviour is the following: test:dom.ain: miss test(a)dom.ain: miss test+dom.ain: hit I've added the information if the username changes for better debugging possibilities. In practice the username is of course always the same. Hi, I would like to setup an IMAP server with SASL and LDAP support. As far as I can see dovecot supports SASL and LDAP, but not the way I need it. If I understand dovecot correctly, it has it's own set of SASL mechnisms and uses the LDAP server just to store the plaintext password. In case of authentication dovecot fetches the plaintext password from LDAP and then performs the SASL steps internally. I need to support proprietary SASL mechanisms built into an LDAP server, which are not based on just a single password. So is there a way to configure dovecot to just pass SASL through to LDAP, allowing the IMAP client to talk SASL with the LDAP server through dovecot? regards Hadmut

Hi, Recently the support of Samba's ntlm_auth helper was added to dovecot-auth (mech-winbind.c etc.). It is alrready in 1.1, the patch for 1.0 is here: http://dovecot.org/patches/1.0/dovecot-1.0.3-winbind.patch . It allows auth against NT or AD domain. I would like to infrom all that we successfully use this new feature during 2 month and ~300 users 24x7 (an energy power company). No any failures at all! This feature allows to specify "SPA" (Secure Password Authentication) option in OE, and to avoid explicit user passwords in mail accounts. Some random notes: - In the mixed environment (both plain and ntlm methods in use), you have to specify: mechanisms = plain ntlm login i.e. "ntlm" before "login". When sending mails, OE just catch first seen and try to use it, even if you specify to use SPA in the mail account preferences. - It seems that MS Outlook requires the specifying of password even when SPA is in effect - When OE has several identities, and one of the identities has SPA for SMTP set (outgoing mail), it wins over all another identities. - "The Bat" mailer supports NTLM for reading, not sending, and requires password too. hi, we migrate from exchange to dovecot. we do it with imapsync. first we try to do it with --syncinternaldates, but this fails on many messages with invalid date, so we drop this option. unfortunately after this those users who use outlook see the received date as the date we do the migration in stead of the real received date. other clients eg webmail, thunderbird etc sees the right date. so my question what can i do? it's a dovecot bug or outlook and if outlook's bug is there any workaround fro this? thanks in advance. -- Levente "Si vis pacem para bellum!"

I wanted to know if it is possible to authenticate user for IMAP and POP3 access seperately using a database? All I have seen in the documentation/wiki is a single query for authentication. I have problem with dovecot-1.0.3 and apacheds ldap server. If I change just uris in dovecot-ldap.conf to point to fedora-ds server, everything works O.K. [Dovecot] 1.1Beta5 Issue

I installed 1.1Beta 5 this weekend. I had no problems at all yesterday using Thunderbird. I started reading my mail with Squirrelmail this morning and everything was going pretty smooth. I tried to delete a daily e-mail I receive from careerbuilder.com and the IMAP process shot up to 99.9% and I was not able to do anything in Squirrelmail. I killed that process and tried it again just to be sure what it was. And it did it again. I can delete any other message with no problems, just that one causes me issues. I am not sure if Thunderbird is the same, I will have to wait until I get home tonight. If there is any troubleshooting you would like me to do, please let me know. Jeff

Hello all, I've been googling for a workaround for this for nearly a week to no avail and I hope someone in the list can shed some light on it. I have downloaded and compiled dovecot 1.0.5 and applied the quota-warning to it. I have configured everything and it's working wonderfully, even the lda with the sieve plugin. Is it possible to use a fixed home (as in the static userdb) while using an ldap userdb? I am looking for something similar to user_global_uid and user_global_gid but for the "home". If not, is it possible to fix or append something to the values in the user_attrs (like the following)? user_attrs = [whatever_i_want_to_append]uid=home uidNumber=uid,gidNumber=gid Regards, David Bosque

Hi list members, I am using dovecot on Slackware 12.0 with postfix 2.4.5. I just upgraded to version 1.0.6 from 1.0.5 and now I am not getting emails. I am using dovecot deliver with postfix. deliver log also says email put into appropriate inbox. Starting up dovecot doesn't show any error messages. I've looked at the release notes and couldn't find any changes that should affect the config file. I think this is where I left off last weekend. Instead of this happening at the base of one of my shared mail namespaces, it happens when I try to select a top level folder inside the namespace, or try to directly select an entire path to a folder. Hi all, I found a whole bunch of core files from imap this evening, so here are the stack traces from each. Unlike my last message, I don't have debugging symbols for these, so there isn't any analysis I can easily do. There were several cores with the first stack trace and one with the second trace. The core dump for the second trace is the only one I noticed. I suspect that the first trace happens when the client host goes to sleep. If so, the situation needs to be handled more gracefully. Possible Caching Bug showing up as a MIME Boundary Issue I'm using Dovecot version 1.0.0. I was using Dovecot version 1.0.0 beta3 or alpha4. I upgraded to Dovecot 1.0.0 to make sure that was not the issue. Over the past few weeks on a server running a stable dovecot, I have seem a few emails arriving where the MIME document structure dividers are visible. I've included a screenshot showing this. Using OE6 as client. Have tried adding oe6-fetch-no-newmail per clients wiki but this seems to stop the ability to login at all. I am using two different machines with Outlook Express to access the same email. The same problem will show up on both. Usually, if I delete the .imap cache for the folder, the email comes down correctly. [Dovecot] trouble deleting folders that only contain folders

Hi, I'm using dovecot 1.0.5 with mbox storage. Users can't delete folders that are created to 'only hold other folders'. I can create these folders with no problem. They are directories in the file system. Normal folders (which are mbox files) are deleted with no problem. I've tried with both squirrelmail and Thunderbird, and what happens when a delete is requested, is that all files within the folder's dir tree are deleted and the client is unsubscribed, but the directory tree remains. I upgraded a 1.0 install to 1.1b3. Almost everything is working peachy-keen :) It seems faster to me, Offline Folders and 'new mail' options for Thunderbird are now working, and Mail.App doesn't seem to need the extra namespace. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to read my quotas any longer. I went through the docs, and I see the quota plugin has changed, but there doesn't seem to be a needed configuration change. Did I miss something? Hi, I've got a little problem with Dovecot IMAP. Everything works nice ( pam auth, ldap userdb, and so on ) BUT i need to uses quotas and it doesn't seem to work. I tried both ways : 1) user dovecot-ldap.conf with user_attrs, as it's shown on dovecot wiki ; 2) use the commandes "plugin {.........." in dovecot.conf But it didn't work. Strangely, when i try to use the PLUGIN command in dovecot.conf, the server crashes at start, "syntax error" in config.... I'm not sure if the quotas are supported in my Dovecot version : version : 0.99.14 release : 1.EL4 I'm using an old AlphaServer ( dec ) with Centos 4.2 installed, and it's a real mess to get yum updates. On startup of dovecot 1.1b2 I seem to have some permission trouble. [Dovecot] Duplicate message

I'm running dovecot on my desktop and using kmail as a client on my laptop. I am very happy with this - I was previously running kmail under NFS, and this is infinitely better. There is one small issue, which is not very important. I get a small number of messages apparently duplicated. This doesn't really matter, as there is a facility Folder=>Remove Duplicate Messages under kmail, and this deals with the issue easily enough. I just wondered though why I get the duplicate messages, and if there is some simple way to avoid them?

All, [version: dovecot-0.99.11-4.EL4.src.rpm] We recently experienced an issue that prevented all new IMAP logins from occurring. Although it appears that it was due to running out of available system file descriptors, I'm still not sure what the true root cause was as I can't replicate the same error in our test environment. The system file descriptor max was set at (per `cat /proc/sys/fs/file-nr`) 380081 , and we're averaging around 7,000 in use. It appears that the main issue was dovecot-auth, so does this appear to fall in line with the known PAM bug in this version? [Dovecot] Problem in mbox-sync.c

We've just cut over to a new mail server running Dovecot 1.0.5. The underlying OS is RHEL 5. User mailboxes are stored in Unix mbox format on a local ext3 file system. The MTA on the system is the default RedHat version of Sendmail 8.13.8 with procmail for local delivery. We're using a combination of dotlock and fcntl style locking. The output of "dovecot -n" for this system appears below my signature. The real problem with this behavior is that sometimes, but not in all cases, the process will leave behind a dotlock when it exits. If the abandoned dotlock is on the user's inbox, then procmail won't deliver new mail to the user until the lock is cleared. This is a big problem. Anybody seen this behavior before and/or know what's causing it? Can anybody suggest ideas for further debugging this issue? We'd appreciate any help that you all can provide. Hi! I'm trying to use a master user, here is what I'm doing: dovecot.conf: auth default { [...] passdb passwd-file { args = /etc/dovecot.passdb_master pass = yes master = yes } passdb passwd-file { args = /etc/dovecot.passdb } [...] } (Dovecot said that one can not place the passdb containing "master = yes" last, why?) This only works if the master user (in the master passwd file) has PLAIN password scheme. It doesn't work with DIGEST-MD5. Here is the log when it's in DIGEST-MD5: auth(default): passdb(master,84.x.x.x,master): Master user logging in as leva auth(default): digest-md5(leva,84.x.x.x): password mismatch imap-login: Disconnected: user=<leva>, method=DIGEST-MD5, rip=84.x.x.x, lip=212.x.x.x, TLS When the master password is in PLAIN scheme, I can login as anyone. Hello everybody, Recently I have migrated my IMAP server from Courier-IMAP to dovecot. The migration was successful and all the users are happy due to the speed of the new IMAP server. We are using Horde-3.2+IMP-4.2 as the webmail client. But one of the users is having some unusual issues with his mailbox. Whenever he clicked and open a new email, it's never marked as read. He has to click and open several times to get it marked as "Read". I checked the dovecot version and found that we have a unstable version. So I upgraded to the latest stable version(1.0.5). But still occasionally he has the same issue. Does anyone have experienced similar issue. [Dovecot] Keywords (labels) support via virtual folders

Hi all, while I am rather a beginner when it comes to IMAP, I was thinking whether it would be possible (and feasible) to implement setting and unsetting of IMAP keywords with the means of virtual folders in Dovecot. The background is that the IMAP keywords seem to be a very useful thing to me: I would often like to be able to 'tag' a message so that it is easy to group with other similar messages and easy to find/ browse later. The problem is that not all IMAP clients support this functionality (as far as I am aware, mine which happens to be The Bat! does not); the only way of achieving similar results is using regular folders for grouping messages but this has several disadvantages, the most prominent one being unable to assign more than one 'tag' to a message this way (without copying a message). What I am thinking of is a server-side 'helper' that intends to achieve functionality similar to native client keywords support by the means of providing 'virtual folders' (as opposed to regular folders that we've known for a long time). The server would expose a list of virtual folders (user defined, either server-side by modifying the configuration, or client-side, by using the existing 'create regular folder' folder functionality but using a special name format that would be recognized by the server to be virtual folder related). These virtual folders would, upon moving a message to them, apply a keyword to the message (but the message would not be moved as it would be the case with regular folders). Upon moving a message from a virtual folder, the keyword would be reset. This means that the messages would not normally be moved from their place in existing hard folder structure but they would additionally be flagged with a keyword (or more of them) and be visible in respective virtual folders. The result is: - keywords support for clients that do not natively support it, - leaving existing message folder structure intact, - support for multiple keywords/ labels per message (one virtual folder = one keyword), - browsing flagged messages via respective virtual folders. What do you think of it? While I've been toying with this and similar ideas for a long time, what I propose above is of course heavily influenced by the recent addition of IMAP access to Gmail ([1]). While I still do not have it enabled for my account, I presume this is how the Gmail labels get translated to IMAP client ([2], [3]). Hi! I'm testing 1.1, and have some questions. (How) Can I override the default maildir++ quota setting (I mean quota_rule) in the userdb, so that one won't have quota at all. Right now I'm setting a very high limit in the userdb with quota_rule=*:storage=99G in the extra field. Prior to 1.1 I was using 1.0 and had fs quota. I've had set up dovecot so that the indexes were stored on another partition where there were no fs quotas for the users. Now I'm trying to use maildir++ quota, and wondering if there is still any use of keeping the index files on a separate partition. This will be maybe a bit stupid, but do I still need the quota plugin to be loaded in the protocol {imap,pop3,lda} sections if I'm using the above mentioned new 1.1 maildir++ quota? Furthermore, will deliver be aware of the new quota system? Thanks! Daniel

[Dovecot] SSL help needed - "no root certificate"

Hi. I've spent the past few hours trying to get SSL working right in Dovecot 1.0.5 and now I must turn to you for help. I purchased an SSL certificate from Go Daddy. I pointed ssl_cert_file to the .crt file and ssl_key_file to the .key file, but the client (Mail.app) complains: Mail was unable to verify the identity of this server, which has a certificate issued to "imap.nccom.com". The error was: There is no root certificate for this server. So I tried downloading Go Daddy's root certificate and pointing ssl_ca_file to that file, but that didn't help. So I tried pointing ssl_ca_file to the intermediate certificate sent to me by Go Daddy, but that breaks things to the point where I never even get the above message; just nothing happens at all. I'm not sure what to try next and am happy to entertain any suggestions. Thanks...

[Dovecot] SSL/TLS with Outlook client

I am trying to get TLS to work with Outlook 2007 and I've hit a small problem. Whenever I start it up, I get this error: "The server you are connected to is using a security certificate that cannot be verified. The target principal name is incorrect." (yes/no choice of trusting) I first tried with a wildcard cert (*.elisand.com), and then tried with mail.elisand.com - both certs are from cacert.org and the root CA certs are installed and functioning properly on my system (so the certs should be trusted). I've searched all over Google and such trying to find out why Outlook would give me this error from an IMAP/TLS connection (closest I could find was Exchange related info), and I know this is by no means an Outlook mailing list... though I'm just wondering if anyone else on here has ever encountered this problem before and could point me in the right direction to getting the SSL cert working with Outlook. Is it possible to serve both POP3 and IMAP for the same user from the same mailbox format, e.g. the maildir format? If so, how should I configure in dovecot.conf? Hello, I am no programmer at all. I have dovecot set up on two very similar machines. On one of the boxes, the dovecot server has recently been showing slower response times. It feels slower. Where it is slower, dovecot works as an auth server for postfix. I have replaced exim with postfix on that box and I think since then dovecot started to slow down. On the other machine the MTA is exim. I'd like to ask how to go about debugging the problem. Neither machine serves many users, the one that is slower has currently only two. It's a home setup really. [Dovecot] graceful failure when some folders are not available...

Hi folks. Quick question in the hopes that someone knows the answer, before I dig in the code some more. In testing a new setup with some long-term archival mbox-format mailboxes stored on an NFS mount, we've found the following: if the mount is unavailable for any reason, the user cannot log into their email at all. Dovecot says: "stat() failed with mbox foo" and dies. This is coming from the mbox sync checks. (It's possible the same happens with a maildir folder--I'm just specifying mbox because that's what we've tested with so far). Is there a way to reconfigure this behavior? I could maybe see a fatal abort if the inbox is unavailable, but for other folders it seems rather... presumptuous. I have to think there's already a way to handle this more gracefully in the config and I'm just not seeing it. Also, does anyone know offhand if this behavior is the same for folders that aren't in the default/inbox namespace? That would seem *really* wrong. Any thoughts? Thanks much, -Brian

This message that I just sent did the error which was a reply. But, a new message I created earlier today after installing Beta 4 worked fine. Hello all, I'm trying to enable 3 different features in my mail system (postfix, amavisd, dovecot). 1)out of office auto reply 2)script execution based on email 3)automatically add disclaimer/signature to outgoing email (also listed in order of importance to me) I'm looking for pointers to documentation or instructions. It seems that 1 and 2 would best be done in dovecot somewhere, while 3 is probably best implemented in postfix. (my next step is postfix documentation) Can anybody provide any suggestions or pointers to a how to or other documentation? Thanks, Ray

[Dovecot] beta2-beta4 moving mail between accounts broken

I've upgraded to latest Thunderbird client and recompiled latest dovecot source repository code and this problem still persists. I have two accounts which I've been transferring email between for months. Now when I attempt this the following loop begins and the only way to stop it is to restart both Thunderbird and dovecot. The RFC says <http://www.isi.edu/in-notes/rfc3501.txt> this: TEXT <string> Messages that contain the specified string in the header or body of the message. But with the current hg tip (see linked rawlogs), SEARCH TEXT provides results disjoint from SEARCH FROM. [Dovecot] Courier to Dovecot: problems with folders

Hi all, I am migrating a maildir Courier-IMAP installation to Dovecot. Almost everything seems to work well, but I still have problems accessing subfolders. First let's see what I have done. I used the courier-dovecot-migrate.pl script suggested in http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration/Courier to convert mailboxes from Courier to Dovecot. No problems here. My dovecot.conf contains this: (...) mail_location = maildir:/mail/vmail/domains/%h namespace private { prefix = INBOX. inbox = yes } (...) The subscriptions file in the mailboxes looks correct to me. It includes all the folders and subfolders, i.e.: Sent Trash Drafts mail.dovecot mail.misc mail.postmaster tools web.apache web.css Folders separated by "." are actually subfolders: mail ---- dovecot | --- misc | --- postmaster I let the configuration of my IMAP clients unchanged from Courier to Dovecot. That is, they specify the "INBOX." prefix, as before. For instance, with Pine: folder-collections=mymail {mymail.example.com/user=John.Smith}INBOX.[] Now the problem: I get different behaviours depending on the client I use to access to Dovecot: - Thunderbird: All the folders are seen correctly. But the whole folders tree is under "Inbox", while with Courier the first-level folders (i.e. Drafts, mail, web) were at the same level of Inbox - Webmail (Squirrelmail 1.4.8): The same as above. - Pine: The folders are apparently correct, and are not under Inbox, but I can access only the first-level folders: the folders containing sub-folders are empty, therefore the subfolders cannot be accessed. Hi, running the current version from http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot/ (but the same happens with 1.1.beta3) After yesterday's patches, squirrelmail (tested with 1.4.11 and 1.4.10a) complains when appending to the Sent folder (after sending a message): ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server. Query: SELECT "INBOX" dovecot's log says dovecot: IMAP(jh): Disconnected: EOF while appending bytes=12780/37798 I have captured the conversation with tcpdump (http://plonk.de/imap.cap) and it looks like dovecot is closing the connection. Hello List, I have a question about dovecot-1.1.0-beta3 but first I'll ramble a little bit: Recently I upgraded a 0.99 installation of dovecot to 1.0.5. All went relatively smoothly until the dovecot-auth process began returning "out of memory" after a day. There is a rather large user base here. The current setup is using passdb pam with blocking=yes, with pam_ldap.so handling most authentication (although in special cases I am using a custom written pam module which I have disabled to eliminate as the source of the leak). The dovecot-auth process' VmRSS size grows by 4k per request and has a limit of 256megs. Unfortunately turning blocking=yes off isn't an option. The reason I must have it turned on is that the custom pam module is changing the username on specific requests. I am trying to pinpoint the memory leak (pam_ldap is my biggest suspect right now though I'm going to try running valgrind on a test system). For now I have set shutdown_clients=no and am restarting dovecot at regular intervals. Okay the question: In dovecot 1.1.0 beta3 I see that blocking=yes is now on, no matter what. Has something been done to address potential memory leaks in pam modules? Thanks, -Andrew

Hi dovecotters, I have a system running 1.0rc1 right now and am having problems (more on that later). I know that 1.0.5 is "current" but I'm running Debian Stable (Etch) and have reservations of upgrading until nothing works anymore ;-) Do I really need to make the upgrade to 1.0.5, and if so can anyone here point out how to do so using the standard Debian apt-get process? -- Mitch

Hi, ive walked into a enviroment where the previous admin has being using pop and making the email clients leaving a copy of the mail on the workstation.. Now overtime these mailboxes (mbox format) have grown between 1,5 to 1,8 Gigs large I want to convert all these mailbox to IMAP (only 15) and want to know whats the largested suggest folder size per user dovecot IMAP runs smoothly with good responce times.. I know the users also have large OUT LOOK pst files 4.5GIGs and wondering if I could also intergrate that into IMAP? Please any feedback would be great on this topic..??
