[Dovecot] How to upgrade a running Dovecot?

Greetings - Could someone confirm how to perform various upgrades on a live system running Dovecot please? Scenario 1: Change to dovecot.conf =================================== If I make a change to dovecot.conf am I right in thinking I can simply send a HUP signal to the main dovecot process to get it to re- read the configuration file and act on its revised content? Scenario 2: Altered SSL Certificates ===================================== I need to replace our current certificates and have prepared new files containing the replacement certificate and private key. Am I right in thinking that I can simply modify dovecot.conf to point at the new files and send a HUP signal to dovecot? Specifically, will new connections use the revised certificates, and existing connections continue to work OK without interruption? Scenario 3: Software Upgrade ============================= I build a particular version of Dovecot into the tree /usr/local/ dovecot-A.B.C and then have a symlink called "dovecot" pointing at the this directory. To upgrade I can then build the new version into /usr/local/dovecot-X.Y.Z and test. To actually switch over the live service to the new X.Y.Z version do I need to: a) Totally shut down the old A.B.C version of Dovecot, thereby breaking all open connections for users? or b) Assuming I am using "shutdown_clients = no" can I just kill the master "dovecot" process and then start up the new version? Ideally I want existing connections to remain running, but new connections to start up using the new X.Y.Z version of Dovecot. The comment for "shutdown_clients" implies this, but also says: "This however means that after master process has died, the client processes can't write to log files anymore." So if I understand this correctly then with "shutdown_clients = no" in force then the sequence and behaviour is this? ... 1. Old version A.B.C of Dovecot running, clients can log through the master "dovecot" process to the logfiles. 2. Kill the old master "dovecot" process, start new X.Y.Z version up. 3. New connections get served by version X.Y.Z. Old connections DON'T get killed and can continue, BUT can no longer write anything to the logfiles? Greetings - Now that users are beginning to pile up more on our new Dovecot-based IMAP service I'm seeing a small number of entries like this in the logfiles: Corrupted index cache file /mailstore/index/o/ozw100/.INBOX/ dovecot.index.cache : invalid record size We are using Dovecot 1.0.3 with Maildir folders served over NFS from NetApp filers, but the index files are stored on local disk. By "a small number" I mean 4 or 5 on each of our two IMAP servers since midnight. * Should I be worried? * Is there anything I need to do fix the files? (I'm guessing not as no problem reports have come in, and the logs show the people affected continuing to work throughout the day.) * Would upgrading to 1.0.5 help? [Dovecot] Custom password encryption scheme, how to do it?

Hi all, I'm a fairly recent convert to Dovecot/Postfix from Sendmail, so please be gentle (and assume I know nothing). :) I've got a Postfix/Dovecot/PostgreSQL setup with a custom DB schema for my email. This database is also used for a bigger program I use for all my hosting needs (domains, etc.). Currently, I've set it up to use plain-text authentication while I was developing it and getting things running. Now though it's up and running fine, so I want to increase the strength of my passwords that Postfix/Dovecot use. I currently have two fields in a table called 'users'; 'usr_password' which is plain-text and what Postfix/Dovecot currently use and 'usr_strong_password', which stores a stronger hash and is used by the main program. My question is, can I have Postfix/Dovecot use a custom password hashing system? The way I store my strong password (as used by the web-interface) is; - Take the password provided from the user - Read a stored 'salt' value from the database (unique per user and changed on password [re]sets). - Generate an initial SHA256 hash out of the password+salt. - Re-hash the initial SHA256 hash many thousands of times. - Compare the final hash with the hash stored in 'usr_strong_password'. If I can tell Dovecot how to do this, where would I do it? Is there a document/howto/etc someone could point me to? Is there a file I should look at? Thanks all!! Madi

[Dovecot] Dovecot + OCFS2

Hello, We are running Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant Update 4) with OCFS2 for our mail servers. There are three nodes in the cluster with shared storage and OCFS2 filesystem on it. The filesystem is used for mail storage(using Maildir layout) and is accessed by smtpd, pop3 and imap processes(DOVECOT). The system works fine but when there are mailing lists the load increases dramatically. It only occurs when there are mailing lists. We have tested it in lab with good results and now in production we are having some load problems caused by dovecot´s deliver process. In lab we had sent lots of mails but always to a few accounts. It was OK. Now there are sent less mails but there are more accounts. The load increases until it reaches about 100 and only restart fixes the problem. The umounting of the OCFS2 filesystem is not possible even when all process accessing it are killed. Any suggestions? TIA Info: Three nodes. [Dovecot] Subscribe to root of Maildir namespace?

Our users currently make use of a single namespace, mbox format: namespace private { separator = / prefix = hidden = no inbox = yes location = mbox:~/:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u:INDEX=/var/spool/poptemp/dovecot/%u } I'd like to give them access to additional Maildir-format storage area, so to the above I've added: namespace private { separator = / prefix = archive/ hidden = no location = maildir:/newmail/%-3.3i/%u/:INDEX=/var/spool/poptemp/dovecot/%u.a-thumper-mail } I can set up subfolders of archive/, and they work as expected. I can also designate the "root" of archive/ as INBOX and that works properly. But "SUBSCRIBE archive" fails. Is it possible to subscribe to the "root" of this new Maildir heirarchy as if it were just another folder? If not, would this be a useful feature to add? [Dovecot] problematic ACL with shared folders and maildir

Hello, Recently we have been asked to deploy some shared imap folders within our instance of dovecot. However, we ran into a problem with how ACLs are implemented, and consequences regarding maildir++ mailboxes. Long story short: * IMAP clients sees the hierarchy as a tree: sample/1, where 1 is a child of sample * on the filesystem, sample/1 is represented as .sample and .sample.1, both on the same level This presents a problem: dovecot-acl file meant for sample mailbox does not apply to mailbox 1. In fact, a user with permissions to create mailboxes under sample, will not be able to access those mailboxes, once created. Wonder if anybody has been in a similar predicament, and found a solution. Any hints would be greatly appreciated. I'd have thought it was > either the "imap-login" or "imap" processes? > Just to be clear about this for myself, (instead of relying on the 'ol saying 'that is how it used to work' -- because I am switching over to 1.1 from 1.0.n your question takes on new relevance for me as well) I tested this and yes it works as before, the new files seem to be used for the new connections (all of the dovecot auth processes are killed on the HUP signal -- dovecot itself just rereads the conf file and new auth listeners are started -- assuming that you use Dovecot for the auth mechanism to Postfix) and existing connections seem to handle things okay. I did find something new (or I have not noticed it before) If you kill (not just restart) the Dovecot process itself and restart it with existing connections (someone was connected to IMAPS when you killed Dovecot) Dovecot will not restart, complaining that port 993 is taken already. This happens regardless of the shutdown_clients = yes/no setting. This may be particular to the new version 1.1, I do not know. > Jerry

[Dovecot] Compiling drac.c on a 64 bit system

I have just installed dovecot and want to set up the drac interface. However, when I compile drac.c I get the following link errors; anybody know what the right compile options are for a 64 bit system? Hi, I've got the problem that dovecot's deliver prints the authentification information to the syslog. [Dovecot] UIDL and IMAP

I finally got my aging FC2 box retired and moved all email to my new CentOS 5 box. My site is all-IMAP, no POP3. I have one user who downloads all email to Thunderbird on his laptop so that he can work offline while away from a network connection (eg. on an airplane). I forgot to change the pop3_uidl_format setting as described here: <http://wiki.dovecot.org/Upgrading/1.0> So he was seeing repeated downloads of all his mail (about 300 MBytes) every time he connected. (I'm not sure why it didn't happen only the first time.) I changed the setting and haven't heard back whether if fixed things for him. Does this setting in fact get used by IMAP? It's in the POP3 section, so I'm wondering if it takes effect when one is using IMAP from the client. CentOS 5 is currently shipping with: dovecot-1.0-1.2.rc15.el5 I may look for a newer release. CentOS, based on RHEL, is intended to be a conservative distro, so I'll probably need to look at RPMForge (an addon repository of more exotic and bleeding edge software) to see if it offers a newer release.

[Dovecot] Dovceot user pop3 last connect info?

Dovecot experts, I am a newbie to Dovecot. I am in the process of replacing qpopper with dovecot to support pop 3 clients. I have installed the latest version of Dovecot on Fedora Core 6. Everything seems to be working fine using ldap, etc. However, with qpopper, I used to have .pop.username files which would give me a time stamp of the last time a user established a pop3 connection. I know that Dovecot has logs of connection in the /var/log/maillog files, but these files rotate out over a relatively short period of time. I work on a dovecot cluster (15 servers) we need to add a new storage array and move the data for a list of user from the old storage to the new one. We use dovecot proxy to redirect imap and pop3 to the same server everytime. How to disable pop3 and imap access during the data migration process (duration 5 minutes to 10 minutes). I'm doing in-site migration of accounts from /etc/passwd to an LDAP directory. The migration should be progressive (not all users at the same time). I'm already able to check mail for accounts in /etc/passwd and accounts in LDAP. The problem is with mail delivery. I'm using Postfix + Dovecot-LDA. Sparked from the discussion on the list, I've put my antispam plugin into git and split up the code into a frontend and possibly multiple backends. See http://git.sipsolutions.net/dovecot-antispam.git/ (URL functions as both gitweb and git URL) Andreas, I took your README file and adjusted it, I hope you don't mind. I didn't fork from your git tree because you'd already implemented the libdspam backend there. Maybe you could take a look at the new backend/frontend separation and implement a libdspam backend. Aria, it should be possible to write a spamassassin plugin, quite easily if spamassassin supports training based on signatures, not quite so easily otherwise though I intend to plan this. Timothy, you could write the mysql logger as a backend too. I take patches :) Oh and as always thanks to Timo for implementing such a nice server and string, memory and mail handling API. johannes

I am trying to get a SPEC file for an RPM to build a devel package. I have it working, except for one thing. 1.0.5 doesn't actually install the headers with that option to configure found in the subject. It does create the directory, but it doesn't put the files there. Timo, is this a known/unknown bug, or am I doing something stupid? Thanks, Trever

[Dovecot] SORT(DATE) and missing Date headers

Hello, Occasionally, I get mail that's missing a Date header. The usual suspects are iTunes weekly mailings and NYTimes email-to-a-friend articles. I use qmail, which doesn't "fix" these malformed emails by adding a Date header (like Sendmail does), so when they get to my mailbox, they're just as badly formed as they were when they were sent, which is to say, they have no Date header. Unfortunately, this means that SORT (DATE) puts them at the beginning of the list---and in a mailbox with lots of old mail, that's usually the wrong spot. Now, my email clients will do some basic guesswork about when the message was sent, usually by falling back on the timestamp of the first-added Received header. So, they will display a date. But they have to then sort all messages themselves in order to get a valid sorting. Would it be possible to get Dovecot to fall back to Received header parsing whenever a message is missing a Date header? The idea is that SORT (DATE) would then become useful even in the face of commonly malformed email. How hard would this be to hack into the current Dovecot source? I'm running dovecot on my desktop with kmail as IMAP client on my laptop. When I start kmail on the laptop it sometimes takes several minutes to "calm down". The number of messages listed in the IMAP inbox increases greatly - maybe from 2500 to 3000 - and then slowly decreases. There are sometimes a large number of duplicate messages, which kmail allows one to delete. I don't know if this is a kmail or dovecot problem. It is quite likely there is something wrong in my setup. Any suggestions or advice gratefully received.

Hi, I'm running version 1.0.3 of dovecot using IMAP and using javamail to access the mail. The application I'm using (when stress testing the system by doing simultaious creation of email and deleting emails, it sometimes get into the state where the application (via javamail) ask for the UID of a message that has been expunged and deleted (no longer exists). Dovecot returns with the following error: AXXX FETCH 14 (UID) AXXX BAD Error in IMAP command FETCH: Invalid messageset This can easily be reproduced by using telnet to 143 and giving the command by hand. When I read through the source code, there were obvious comments that states the dovecot will not return NO on fetch errors, only BAD. So I assume it is done on purpose. My question is that in RFC 3501 for fetch it says: (section 6.4.5) Result: OK - fetch completed NO - fetch error: can't fetch that data BAD - command unknown or arguments invalid No I guess a UID that is out of range could be considered "arguments invalid", but shouldn't it be a soft error with NO as a result where "can't fetch that data" is more appropriate according the the RFC. The command isn't syntactically BAD, the requested data just does not exists. The same command tested against another IMAP server returns AXXX NO message not available Not that they are necessarily correct, but it just begs the question. I tried to debug why imap process takes 100% CPu and it is very slow when I move an email from an imap folder to another imap folder and then I typed: strace -tt -o /log-imap.txt -p <process number> well, during the trace the imap process doesn't crash and it is very fast. If I stop the tracing, I have again the problem and sometimes the crash of the process. Any help? I'm trying to do a rewrite of the dspam_plugin for dovecot 1.1b1. There are some API changes that warranted an update of the plugin. Also, I wanted the dspam_plugin to be able to handle pristine mails for dspam retraining, as opposed to the signature based retraining. Question: How can I retrieve the full unix path for a specific mail? The original code uses mail_get_first_header() to retrieve the signature header. I need something like mail_get_mail_file_path(&path) which I then could pass on to dspam. Is there some such function available? Thanks in advance /Lars

[Dovecot] shared mailboxes question

I'm using a virtual mailbox setup. Lets say my users have mailboxes in /home/vmail/domain/%u. What I'm trying to do is setup one namespace that points to /home/vmail/domain and contains everyones mailboxes that I can subscribe to. Is this possible? I tried using a symlink to /home/vmail/domain but it doesn't work because its looking for the dotFoldername. The only way I could get this to work is by creating a symlink for each folder in every mailbox. This is way too much maintenance especially since it will dynamically change. The only other way I could get it working was to create a namespace for each user and point to /home/vmail/domain/%u/Maildir/. Then inside everyones Maildir/ create a symlink for INBOX -> . This works but I'd have to do it for each user when I'd rather just use one namespace. Is there an easier way of doing this?

Hi Any opinions on a preferred namespace setting for use with Dovecot? Deciding factors seem to be client support, not being too unusual, accidental ease of setup, wider character range support (eg dots in folder names?), issues when scripting imap commands? For example Outlook Express (common with our userbase) seems to assume no folderprefix when using our current Courier server and from memory I think this causes some subtle issue with Sent Items and Drafts folders until you tell it to use an INBOX. folder prefix? (can't recall the exact details right now) I notice also that Thunderbird will show all folders under "Inbox" if I have an INBOX. prefix, but shows them all in a list if there is not one. Actually I find the former quite a useful feature because I have a number of test accounts where I only want to click into the INBOX, do I can keep the list of folders closed up Any other programs exhibit any (possibly beneficial) side effects from different prefix choices? Anyone got any preferences either way? Any pros/cons in using a dot as folder separator rather than a slash? I can see some logic in using an INBOX folder prefix and a slash as the folder separator because this would then mimic the on-disk layout.. (Is this what cyrus does?) I mainly care about best support for Outlook Express / Windows Mail and Thunderbird - any opinions on most compatible settings? Cheers Ed W

Currently running 1.0.2 with 1.1b1 listening on a different port. On first pop3 login on 1.1b1 I received an immediate disconnect (I was testing with telnet) with the log entries below. Subsequent logins work fine. Other accounts that I tried did not have the same problem. So this is probably isolated to some bad indexes or something, but I thought I should let Timo know. I have a problem with the maildir quota plugin. Any imap operations cause the plugin to recalculate the mailbox size and put the new value in the second line of the maildirsize file, while the third line always contains the size of the latest operation. So the resulting sum is incorrect. Moreover, quota-warning is not working either. Hi, Currently we support Courier POP and IMAP for all our users (users can use IMAP as well as POP at the same time). We are thinking about moving to Dovecot; but first moving away from Courier IMAP to Dovecot IMAP (and maybe later also move to Dovecot POP). This would create a mixed environment; after some research I have the following questions. To not break POP3 Courier and still be able to use Dovecot IMAP: - I have to use the namespace prefix in the dovecot.conf file: I read this in the wiki. - "Patch" the source so Dovecot IMAP will look for/use 'courierimapuiddb' instead of 'dovecot-uidlist': otherwise I guess POP3 and IMAP users will have different UID files, right? Is this smart or will this still break the UID file? - "Patch" the source so Dovecot IMAP will look for/use 'courierimapsubscribed' instead of 'subscriptions' of should I just go with the renaming of the files? I'm thinking about patching so the transition can be as transparent as possible: Also if anything might go wrong in production I want to be able to switch back to the 'old' Courier IMAP (without renaming files etc.) Any thoughts on this? Hello there. I do like Dovecot so far, but ran into problem I cant seem to solve, maybe someone can point me into right direction please. I am running version 1.0.rc15 on CentOS 5 Linux i386 system, ext3 fs. The problem is I cant get the maildir: and :ignore to work together. When I drag n drop spam mail to SPAM folder, I get this error: Jun 11 17:58:46 sparrow dspam[28452]: Unable to open file for reading: /var/spool/dspam/data/local/mymail/mymail.sig/466d652f315451306914567.sig: No such file or directory mymail is user that runs dovecot transport (postfix config). The .sig file exist in /var/spool/dspam/data/<domain>/<user>/<user>.sig/466d652f315451306914567.sig. I've tried to google this problem, but no luck. Any advices? Thanx!

All seems well, except for the fact that dspam should be called with '--user currentuser(a)currentdomain.com' at line 157 here: http://johannes.sipsolutions.net/Projects/dovecot-dspam-integration/beta7-c… For my needs, 'currentuser@currentdomain' could be taken as the login name I use for logging in to Dovecot. As I'm not a C-programmer by a long shot, I was wondering if one of you could help me use the bincimap-API to import the login name into a variable so I can use that variable to construct a suitable dspam-command. Hi, I've found the dovecot dspam plugin and looked at the code. I forks and calls the dspam binary for every mail. I didn't like this behavior, so I've migrated it to use libdspam. The plugin still needs more love: * Use cmake instead of a Makefile * Make the spam folder configurable in the dovecot.conf * Code cleanup and more comments. Please test. dovecot --version 1.1.beta1 With previous versions of Dovecot I could manually move maildir files between folders and the index would automatically update when entering the folder with Thunderbird. [Dovecot] Subaddress Extension in sieve plugin

Hello! With many MTAs it is possible to use a special form of adressing: subaddresses or "plussed addresses". For sendmail you can read some information on http://www.sendmail.org/m4/misc_features.html http://www.unix.org.ua/orelly/networking/sendmail/ch24_04.htm#SML2-CH-24-SE… In a sieve filter you can analyse these special detail values, the syntax is described in RFC3598 (http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3598) The current deliver with sieve plugin for dovecot seems to support this RFC, but has the detail information not available. If I use require ["subaddress", "fileinto", "reject"]; require "envelope"; if envelope :detail "to" "junk" { fileinto "junk"; } the rule is not triggered, because the detail information from envelope is not available. Deliver gets the user information only via command line switch "-d". I did not analyse the problem very deep, but I believe we should introduce a new command line parameter for deliver, so deliver can pass the detail information to the sieve plugin. With that parameter you are able to pass the detail information from sendmail to devecot's deliver in the same way procmail is handled (procmail uses -a parameter). To avoid confusion: deliver has already a parameter -m to specify a different mailbox. In the described case the mailbox should be determined by the sieve filter, not via command line parameter. Existing workaround: Because I need this functionality I wrote a quick (and dirty?) workaround. Sendmail does not call deliver directly, but a wrapper program, that adds an additional "Delivered-To" header line. So the detail information may be processed with if address :detail ["Delivered-to"] "junk" { but I would prefer to call deliver directly. What do you think, is it a useful extension and does it work? Hello, POP3 server does not delete mails when user quits POP3 session, but only at the next login. It looks so - user logs in with USER and PASS commands, at this moment new messages are moved from /new to /cur maildir folder. Then messages are deleted with DELE command(before deleting there can be other POP3 commands) and the user quits session. The server says "+OK Logging out, messages deleted.", but in fact messages are not deleted from the disk and stays in /cur folder. Hi, It seems that after I upgraded to 1.1beta1 it takes a few seconds first time I access a folder and i get this error : fcntl(/mail2/home/jon/.Maildir/.INBOX.Pren/dovecot.index.cache, F_RDLCK) failed: Bad file descriptor. In running the various 1.0.n versions of Dovecot's LDA with the instructions in the wiki for using LDA with Postfix [on OS X 10.4] things went well using the instructions as-is (no setuid problems). This changed in moving over to the 1.1 beta. The LDA refused to work failing with the error "setgroups() failed: Operation not permitted" as I mentioned in a previous message. After reading the exchange between Bill Cole and Rich Winkel and following up on this, it seems that the new 1.1b wants you to give the Deliver app specific setuid permission via: cd /path/to/where/dovecot's/deliver/is sudo chmod u+s deliver Then things worked as before. There was no need to give the group 's' permission nor to change ownership of deliver from the default root:staff or root:wheel or whomever... . The error message seems odd though. I am not sure if, overall, this means there is a problem in Dovecot 1.0.n or that things are being tightened up in 1.1b. Thanks Bill and Rich for the tip! Jerry Yeager

[Dovecot] Configure/install path overrides

Hi, I'm building and installing dovecot on a Solaris 10 machine and therefore I want to install Dovecot in /opt/dovecot. Thus, I start configure with --prefix=/opt/dovecot. I also override things like 'libexecdir', 'docdir', etc. When calling make install, Dovecot is installed in /opt/dovecot, but for example the binary user files are installed in /opt/dovecot/bin/dovecot. The same for the docs, which are installed in /opt/dovecot/share/doc/dovecot. I think that's not quite nice and neat, so I call 'make install' like: make docdir=/opt/dovecot/share/doc install. But even then, the wiki stuff is still installed in /opt/dovecot/share/doc/dovecot/wiki in stead of /opt/dovecot/share/doc/wiki. Very anoying. My point is that ./configure should be able to override all paths, but since some paths are somehow hard-coded in the Makefile, this is impossible. Any chance this will (be) change(d) sometime? -Remy

I'm testing deliver with sendmail and fs quotas. On an over quota condition, deliver accepts the mail, deletes it, then issues a MDN immediately. Is there a way to get deliver to soft fail like procmail does with a 400 error and queue the mail, then let sendmail handle the MDN, following it's "confTO_QUEUEWARN" and "confTO_QUEUERETURN" ? How do I troubleshoot this? I don't see anywhere in the logs any errors or any mention whatsoever of filtering activity or failure. hi! Is there any documentation to guide me how to create a dovecot plugin? I'm trying to read the code, but I'm not a good C programmer. I have been able to copy the mail-log plugin into copy-log, edited about 4 lines of code, then I edited Makefiles and configure, now I'm able to compile, install and use my "new" plugin. I notice that kmail does not allow an IMAP sub-folder to be created (from an IMAPS client). When I try, kmail says this cannot be done for one of the following reasons: Your access permissions may be inadequate to perform the requested operation on this resource. The location where the folder was to be created may not exist. A protocol error or incompatibility may have occurred. Is there any simple way of getting round this? KMail has no problem creating top-level IMAP folders.

Hi, I have been looking for a solution to this problem for quite sometime but just haven't got any. This is how my current set up is. I have a IMAP Server installed on my home server. It has various folders. I have configured Thunderbird in my laptop to connect to the IMAP Server and access mails. I have also configured Thunderbird to download mails from my GMail account using POP3. I have set up a filter in Thunderbird to move all my mails which come to my Local Folders "Inbox" to my IMAP Server's Inbox. Now here is my question - Is it possible to set up some rules in the IMAP Server (maybe sieve) so that I can filter the messages coming to its Inbox and move them to another folder? The whole idea is that I have control over when I want to fetch mails from my GMail account but at the same time the filtering rules for moving to custom folders should be stored on the server so that i do not replicate this in every client. Hi guys i've setup a virtual users setup with postfix and when i login to the mail with dovecot i'm not getting a trash or sent items folder I'm looking at the Maildir home and there's no .trash or .sent items there. Any ideas why dovecot woudln't create these? [Dovecot] blackberry with imap idle and concurrent connections

Hello - I've combed the wiki and archives a bit and can't seem to find what I am lookng for. It seems that BlackBerry Internet server has an issue with IMAP accounts along with IDLE and concurrent connections. Please see the following link (sorry it's fairly long): http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalI… It appears as though IDLE can be implemented without "concurrent connections". Courier appears to do this although they have an option to turn it on. At first blush it seems obvious that any mail server will permit concurrent connections but as I read the docs for Courier and BlackBerry it appears to be a subtle thing whereby IDLE allows more than one connection to IDLE against the same IMAP folder when using maildir. Does Dovecot support his? Also, if anyone on the list has experience running a BlackBerry against Dovecot, are you currently getting instant (or near instant) notifications? If so what service are you using? T-Mobile? I am considering upgrading and using Dovecot but BlackBerry support has become critical. Thanks in advance. Chris

Hi to all, I am using the new beta release 1.1. I am experiencing, after the upgrade to the 1.1beta some problems regarding the following scenario: I am conneted with Outlook to dovecot server using IMAP. I have many folders and I want to move an email from a folder to another using drag and drop. I see that when I move the email, the IMAP process goes to 90-95% for about 5 seconds and after, the mail is finally moved. I noticed that this operation sometimes (20% about) is again fast. There is no problem of overload of the server because this mail server, at the moment, manage just 1 email address. Before the upgrade to 1.1beta, this operation was very very fast. Is there a way to try to debug the IMAP process for understanding what is happening? Thank you for your help. Stefano.

Ok, I've ALMOST got this working ... I can run deliver as a user, but when I try using it as the default delivery agent from sendmail, I get deliver(userid): net_connect(/var/run/dovecot/auth-master) failed: Permission denied Does deliver run as root, as the recipient's ID, sendmail's ID or sendmail's GID? (I'm running freebsd) Or am I totally clueless ?? I am trying to get Postfix, Dovecot, Postfixadmin, and MySQP all working together. I'm using 1.0.5 atm. I've hit a point where I can't seem top get dovecot to auth to the MySQL password database It seems to see the user OK, but I can't seem to get a password match. MySQL has password stored as MD5, as per Postfixadmin. When I add plain-md5 to the auth mechanisms dovecot seems to use plain and fails. I had tested dovecot-1.0.5 with vpopmail+mysql but I don't know if the performance is ok. Anybody have test with imaptest? [Dovecot] user_global_uid and user_global_gid

Hi to all, I am using the new beta release 1.1. I see that parameters user_global_uid and user_global_gid are no more used in dovecot-ldap.conf. That means that, as I use LDAP as backend I am obliged to se t these two fileds in LDAP for each user even if they are always the same, as I use virtual domains. I see that I can set the in dovecot.conf the parameters mail_uid and mail_gid, but even if I set these parameters, when I do the query in LDAP (for retrieving other useful parameters) I have the error: userdb(<email address>) didn't return uid but... I don't want to take uid parameter from LDAP, I want to set it globally but I still want to do an LDAP query. Is there a way to do this in the new evrsion or I cannot do anymore this? hi there I noticed the following behaviour with auth backend pam and "args session=yes *" configuration: - login with "plain": pam session gets opend - login with "gssapi" (kerberos): pam session isn't opend (-> no $HOME will be created) Is this a bug or just a limitation by GSSAPI (maybe gssapi works around PAM)? - Thomas Dovecot Versions seen this: - 1.0.rc15 (Debian 4.0 Etch) - 1.0.0 (Debian backports)

Wow! I'm running 1.1 Beta 1 on OpenSuSE linux 10.2. It seems not bad at all. The only thing I've not quite well understood is this message, that pops up when I start dovecot: Warning: fd limit 1024 is lower than what Dovecot can use under full load (more than 1536). Either grow the limit or change login_max_processes_count and max_mail_processes settings Where does dovecot take this 1024 fd limit? Sorry, couldn't find this in the archives. Under freebsd 4.x, the native mail.local that sendmail uses by default writes From_ lines that include the origin address. This is very readily parsable and handy for quick greps in mboxes. But deliver defaults it to MAILER-DAEMON. I see you can specify the envelope From_ with "-f", but I'm not sure how that's useful. Also I'm trying to figure out the instructions for making deliver the default delivery program under sendmail. This is a very plain vanilla setup I have here, procmail is not configured into sendmail.cf so I'm not sure how to adapt the instructions at wiki.dovecot.org/LDA/Sendmail Any help would be much appreciated. I've appended my local mailer stuff below. Should I just substitute deliver's path for mail.local? By the way, dovecot is very slick! It should speed up my mail server by a huge factor. Using dovecot-1.1beta1 I get "Unknown dict module: db" when starting up dovecot. In dovecot.conf I've got the "expire_dict = db:/var/lib/dovecot/expire.db" statement in the plugin{} section. Aparently required when the "expire" plugin is enabled. dovecot is built with "--with-db" and db-devel is present at compile time. Any ideas anyone? Cheers /Lars

deliver appears to copy "^From " header lines from stdin when delivering to Maildir. The header filtering in mbox-save.c prevents this when delivering to an mbox and instead a synthesized "^From " header is written. This is an issue when using, for example, Postfix and mailbox_command = /usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver which does not appear to have an option not to write a "^From " header on the mailbox_command input. I'm attaching a patch that adds a save_header_callback() along the same lines as in mbox-save.c but I'm really not sure this is the right way to do it.

I'd be really grateful if someone running a dovecot IMAP (or IMAPS) server could tell me exactly how their email folders are arranged. What is the mail_location setting in /etc/dovecot.conf ? What are the directories (or some of them) containing mail messages? Does the client see an inbox folder? If so, what directory on the server contains these email messages?

I think I've found the source of a bug which I first saw when running dovecot and pine (or alpine), which I finally tracked down by doing a protocol trace. In the IMAP session, the SEARCH command appears to have a problem with sets of messages and/or the NOT operator. Probably the best way to show this is by doing operations on a folder with ten messages in it. a select ten * FLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft) * OK [PERMANENTFLAGS (\Answered \Flagged \Deleted \Seen \Draft \*)] Flags permitted. * 10 EXISTS * 0 RECENT * OK [UNSEEN 1] First unseen. * OK [UIDVALIDITY 1190450101] UIDs valid * OK [UIDNEXT 11] Predicted next UID a OK [READ-WRITE] Select completed. Now, start doing some basic searches using message sets: b search (1:10) * SEARCH 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 b OK Search completed. OK, so far so good. [Dovecot] dovecot with virtual and local users?

Hello, I googled for a while in order to find a solution to make dovecot work with local and virtual users. My Mailserver setup looks like the following: virtual users are stored in a mysql database, and having their Mailbox here: /srv/mail/$domain/$uid/ Local users have a Maildir folder in their home directory. The only point i found in the web concerning this issue is this post here: http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2006-November/017478.html but I failed to understand the user_query. I have dovecot IMAPS + kmail working perfectly on two laptops - I'm using one now - but I just tried starting it on a third laptop, and cannot get it running; kmail on the third laptop just waits indefinitely, saying "Retrieving Folder Contents Please wait ...". All 3 laptops are running Fedora 7, with more or less the same packages, all updated. (1) I suspect the problem lies with authentication. But how can I test this? Running "telnet <server> 993" gets the same response on all 3 laptops: [tim@elizabeth ~]$ telnet www.*.com 993 Trying 86.*.*.228... Connected to www.*.com. Escape character is '^]'. with no further response until I press ^]. I looked at <http://wiki.dovecot.org/TestInstallation> but this seems only to apply to IMAP on port 143. (2) kmail has an option to "Check What the Server Supports" under the Security tag, but pressing this just returns without any message, leaving whatever settings as they are. (On the laptops where kmail is working as an IMAPS client, the settings are changed to "Use TLS ..." and "Clear text".) I realise this is probably a kmail question, but shouldn't clicking on this option return some warning if it does not work? (3) I guess I don't understand exactly how TLS authentication works. Does installing openssl set up the correct certificates on server and client? Is there any documentation on this? Any suggestions or enlightenment gratefully received.

Hello, I'm using dovecot 1.0.3 and Dovecot Sieve plugin 1.0.2. Sieve script works fine with normal addresses, like user@domain.., and messages marked with "X-Spam-Flag: YES" are delivered directly to INBOX.Spam. To make deliver understand recipient_delimiter I tried two methods, the first one as per wiki (tweaking postfix master.cf), and the second one by tweaking dovecot-sql.conf (the main idea is to use concat(substring_index('%n',"+',1),'@','%d') for the username). Both methods work good. [Dovecot] IDLE with inotify problem

Hi, I recently switched from courier imap to dovecot. With courier I had a working IDLE setup that informed me immediately when new mail arrived. With Dovecot it is different, sometimes i get an immediate result but most of the time it takes a rather long time for the notification to return to the client. For testing purposes I set mailbox_idle_check_interval = 1 and i now get the same behaviour as with couier (a new mail immediately causes a notification) but i am not sure that this is the right solution. Reading the comments in the config files I was under the impression that this is not needed if dovecot uses inotify. Setup: Kernel 2.6.22.1 with inotify dovecot 1.0.3 from debian unstable Build options: ioloop=epoll notify=inotify ipv6 openssl So my question is can I check that dovecot is actually using inotify? [Dovecot] Problems with quota dict in 1.1.alpha4

Hello, there are problems with quota dict when multiple dovecot deliver processes are launched in parallel. It can be reproduced by sending a mail with multiple different recipients - the mail is delivered OK to all recipients, but the quota are not updated correctly in sql. I looked at the code and it seems that the problem is somewhere in dict cache. [Dovecot] Feature Request for Proxy

Hi, Quick feature request for the proxy function: I have a couple of machines which are all customer facing and customer mailbox lives on any one of them. Customer can login to any machine and the proxy feature then forwards them to the correct machine (often the machine they are already connected to). However, right now if the SQL query simply returns the IP of the correct machine, and this happens to be the same machine that the connection is already on, then we get the auth process stuck in an infinite loop (and generating a lot of log files...) The quick fix is to customise each installation and add some kind of WHERE clause to change the results IF result is already the same as the machine we are on. However, this is error prone when setting up new machines and it's easy to forget or make a typo adjusting the config files. In my case I am using vservers and it's quite neat to be able to simply copy the whole image and fire it up on a new IP to test an upgrade, etc, hence easy to mess up adjusting the conf files when creating a new image. Any suggestions on how this could be done more dynamically, or else could I raise a feature request that the auth process somehow realises when it's being forwarded to an IP address that it's actually listening on already already (ie it's a request which loops back to itself), thus simplifying the config files? I haven't cracked open the code, but it sounds somewhat possible to check the list of IP addresses we are currently listening on and check that the proxy dest isn't among them? Cheers Ed W

[Dovecot] maildir rename_subfolders() and listescape interaction

I'd like to flag a problem we are observing that looks like it is caused by the listescape-plugin.c. I realize that this plugin is not part of the standard Dovecot 1.0 distribution but I would appreciate any insights or suggestions for fixes that anyone is kind enough to offer. The problem concerns subfolder renames when used in conjunction with Maildir folders (I've not tested this against any other folder type). Seemingly the only relevant log entry is @4000000046d70d8f1f72b66c dovecot: Error: IMAP(pod): rename(/srv/mail/home/test0/pod/Maildir/.a/b, /srv/mail/home/test0/pod/Maildir/.c/b) failed: No such file or directory Note the response to tag 05 in each case. The 06 list response in the listescape case is not unexpected given the nature of the failure. My initial reading of rename_subfolders() from maildir-storage.c suggests that the calls through maildir_mailbox_list_init() and maildir_mailbox_list_next() are returning "external" style names (i.e. ones that present "/" as the hierarchy separator) to rename_subfolders(), which is an "internal" helper function. This is supported by the logged error message. I am afraid I am yet to get my head around the actual code path and the escaping and unescaping that is going on so am not able to suggest a fix as yet.
